Miracle Baby Inspires Family MAY 6 RUN SET TO RAISE FUNDS, AWARENESS FOR CDH
By Kami-Leigh Agard
If you were told that your unborn child had a fatal birth defect and only had a 50 percent chance of survival, would you go ahead with the pregnancy or abort? That is a decision Rockaway Park residents, Brian and Jean Williams had to make, but they took a gamble and won big. Looking at spunky and energetic little eight-month-old Ryan “Rockstar” Williams today, one would never guess the harrowing,
but victorious battle he and his parents fought for his life. After a routine prenatal checkup, when his mom, Jean Williams, was just 16 weeks pregnant, the doctors gave the family dire news and a demoralizing directive. The baby had congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), and because of the low survival rate, they should consider terminating the pregnancy. CDH is rare. It’s a birth defect where the diaphragm, the thin sheet of muscle separating the chest from the abdomen, doesn’t fully form in utero and has a hole, where
the spleen, stomach, intestines, and even the liver migrates up into the baby’s chest, pressing against the lungs and shifting the heart over. According to Cherubs, a nonprofit, grassroots organization dedicated to promoting CDH awareness and research, this birth defect is rare. It occurs in one in every 2,500 babies, of which 1,600 are delivered and with a 50 percent survival rate, only 800 survive.
However, this dismal news did not discourage Ryan’s dad and mom, Brian and Jean Williams. “The hospital with which we were initially registered, advised that we should terminate the pregnancy,” Brian Williams said. “We weren’t given a lot of information. Everything they told us about CDH was pretty frightening and broad. I decided to Google CDH and found a center in California that specializes exclusively on CDH cases. “After consulting with them, they got all our medical records, and geared us to get care at Columbia Presbyterian's Children's Hospital of New York in Washington Heights, which has a medical center that provides care for families of children affected by Continued on page 3

The Rockaway Times MIRACLE BABY Continued from Page 2 CDH,” Williams said. The family transferred their prenatal care to Columbia, received counseling on what to expect and met with a top pediatric surgeon, who according to Williams, was “confident about the surgery needed to repair the hole in my son’s diaphragm.” Up until Ryan’s birth, the family made weekly trips from Rockaway to the hospital in Washington Heights for all the necessary prenatal checkups to make sure the baby was stable and was progressing in the womb. On August 2, 2016, Ryan’s mom water broke, and the family made the frenetic trek from Rockaway to the hospital in Washington Heights. She delivered on August 3. Soon after Ryan was delivered, he was taken to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)-Transitional (NICU-T). The baby was immediately incubated and stabilized, and a tube was placed down into his lungs and he was placed on a respirator until his surgery five days later. “After the surgery, our baby remained for about 40 days in the (NICU), where he progressively graduated from the tube taken out from his lungs to placed on a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine to help him breathe. Then eventually he was taken off the CPAP machine, and had to learn how to feed through a bottle, then finally, we were able to take him home,” Williams said. Williams said that during his wife’s pregnancy, they steadfastly kept asking questions and researching, and discovered that CDH children are referred to as Cherubs. “There’s a lot of support groups on the internet for families with CDH, and we reached out to them a lot. Asking questions like — what should we expect next after the surgery, the severity of our baby’s CDH compared to other children, how long did their child stay in the hospital. We just kept asking questions because obviously we were anxious and hungry for information to know if our baby had a winning chance for survival and a long, happy life,” Williams said. Through researching, they found CHERUBS, self-described as “the world's first and largest

CDH non-profit organization founded in 1995, that serves over 5,700 families in 61 countries and all 50 states affected by CDH.” Williams said, “CHERUBS was extremely helpful to us, and along with Columbia University, who did a CDH study called, Diaphragmatic Hernia Research & Exploration; Advancing Molecular Science (DHREAMS) on genetic testing and overall CDH research.” The couple was compelled to help. “We decided to do the Cherubs 5K race with Rockapulcorun to give back to everyone who helped us and build awareness about CDH,” Williams said. The Williams’ Cherubs CDH 5K Walk/Run fundraiser takes place on Saturday, May 6, at the boardwalk on Beach 102nd Street. Registration and bib pick up begins 9 a.m. at Community House, 101-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd. The Diaper Dash begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Kids race at 10:30 a.m., and the 5K Run/Walk at 11 a.m. After the race, Community House will be offering one complimentary drink to runners/ walkers. If you want to sign up in advance for the race, visit: rockapulcorun.com For those who can’t make the race, the Williams family have set up an online fundraising campaign at firstgiving. com/fundraiser/CHERUBS2016/ CHERUBS Ryan “Rockstar” Williams will turn one this August 3rd. According to dad, he is doing wonderfully. He is eating on his own, crawling, standing, and overall, making huge strides. “Every so often we have to go back to do follow-up treatments at Columbia to monitor him for pulmonary hypertension, which is one of the side effects of surgery after CDH. However, they don’t expect any type of reherniation or more surgeries, which is common for a lot of kids, but as of right now we don’t have to be dealing with that. “April is CDH awareness month. When Ryan was diagnosed with CDH, we had no clue what it was. We just want more people to be aware. Some people are told not to go through with the pregnancy, but we just want them to know, don’t give up, there is a chance and everything will be fine,” Williams said.

Shocking Cure
Quick quiz: what makes you bored? I’ll zap you with an electric shock if you try saying this column. More on zapping in a moment. Studies show that your mind basically makes a cost-benefit analysis when your mind starts wandering. You’re bored when you know you could be or should be doing something more worthwhile. What’s the cost and what’s the benefit of the situation? The cost-benefit stuff happens to be a pretty good defense for every high school student who does poorly in class. If they’re bored in algebra, it’s because their mind is telling them they could be doing something soooo much
better. Hey Dad, I’m failing algebra but you should be proud of me because I’m like an economist weighing the costs and the benefits of this boring class and coming to a rational conclusion. Dad: Huh? Kid: Yeah, time is a limited resource. Humans have less and less of it as they age. Dad: Huh? Kid: If I waste the time in that class, I am also wasting opportunity. Opportunity to be doing something productive. Dad: This is bull. Think about what you’re saying. Kid: You want me to think? You’re like my algebra teacher. You think ‘just thinking’ is easy? I gotta tell you about this experiment, the kid says. Peo-

ple in a study were told to go in a room and just think for 15 minutes. There was nothing in the room but a little zapper that would give them a little electric shock. But they didn’t have to touch the zapper. It was just there. Most of these people couldn’t just sit there and think. They gave themselves a jolt just to break up the boredom. Thinking was so boring, they figured it’d be easier to kill the 15 minutes with an occasional shock. One dude shocked himself 190 times in 15 minutes! Which is nuts, but he was not bored. He was told to think and couldn’t stand the idea. He figured thinking was a waste of time and opportunity. He figured he’d shock himself, I guess as his own test to see how much he could take. He seized the opportunity. It turns out the Dad is not bored by this bull. In fact, he
wants to know how he could get his own zapper. Yea, a zapper. You sit in traffic or at a community board meeting. Or you’re exchanging small talk for more than 5 minutes. Boredom starts weighing on you. You want to scream but instead you go to the zapper. A little electric charge sends a jolt through your body and you’ve almost forgotten the traffic or just how excruciating the current conversation is. It’d be great, wouldn’t it, if you’re stuck in a mindless, achingly dull conversation and you suddenly zap yourself and spasm a bit. The person inflicting the boredom gets freaked out and runs away. I don’t know where you get these zappers, but if you’re talking to me and I suddenly walk over and stick my finger in the wall socket, you’ll know you’re killing me.

NATIVE PENS NOVEL ON PLIGHT OF A FEMALE VETERAN
By Kami-Leigh Agard
There are 19.3 million veterans of the U.S. armed forces, according to the Census Bureau 2014 statistics, of whom approximately 10 percent are women. As more and more veterans are publishing novels about their experiences in the armed forces, how many have you seen, much less read, about female veterans? Tamar Anolic, from Belle Harbor and Neponsit, with family still in the area, has written her first
novel, “The Last Battle,” which is one of the first novels featuring a female veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars as the main protagonist. “The Last Battle” is an emotionally gripping story about Colonel Zahara “Zac” Madison, one of the Army's highest-ranking female officers in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. After three deployments, once to Afghanistan, twice to Iraq, Zac's luck runs out. In her last deployment to Iraq, she is thrown by a grenade and gets shot in the leg from a machine gun. She is covered with burns and her leg is completely shattered. After being forced into a disability retirement, Zac has no choice but to return to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where her grandfather left her property. Zac is now at a dead end in life: permanently injured, separated from the military, and too close to her small Arkansas hometown and her abusive, dysfunctional family. Zac’s battle scars have also produced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and uncontrolla-
ble anxiety, and she is faced with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ impenetrable bureaucracy at every turn. As her woes mount, Zac struggles to decide whether to plan her future — or whether to end her suffering once and for all. According to Anolic, who now lives and practices as an attorney in Washington, D.C., “The Last Battle” started as a short story that she wrote back in 2003 when the Iraq and Afghanistan wars just started. “At that time, the media was saturated with these wars. However, though there had been some news about the issues our veterans faced upon returning home such as PTSD, there wasn’t much about female veterans, and especially how these wars greatly affected female high-ranking officers. “So I started reading a lot of memoirs about female veterans and about the wars themselves, and it sounded completely fascinating. That was my inspiration to turn the short story into a novel,” Anolic said.
When posed the question, “Why this topic now?” Anolic said, “More and more veterans are releasing memoirs and novels about their experiences. At the time when I started writing the novel, there were only eight or nine novels out there, and they all just featured male veterans. My novel is one of the first books featuring a female veteran, and I think more are coming. According to a few publishing agents, there is an increasing interest about the plight of female veterans, and the issues they face when they return home.” At a recent open mic at the Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland, Anolic did a book reading. She said that one attendee approached her and asked if she was a veteran. “This woman said she wondered because the book sounded so authentic,” Anolic said. Anolic said if there is interest, she would be elated to host a book reading in the Rockaway community, her home away from home. “The Last Battle” can be purchased on amazon.com

was stationed in California for a time during my first enlistment. (Yeah, I enlisted twice...after all, there is a reason they refer to the USMC as "Uncle Sam's Misguided Children.") Active duty Marines were continually provided with free admission tickets to the original Disneyland which opened in Anaheim, California, back in 1955. I spent many a liberty in a spartan room at a Motel 6 across from the park, exploring every nook and cranny of the place. As a child, my parents had taken me to Palisades Amusement Park, Freedomland USA, Rockaway Park, Coney Island and other amusement parks, but they all paled in comparison to Disneyland. At the time, I thought you can't top this. I couldn't have been more wrong. Some three decades later, back in 2002, Grace and I took our two girls (ages six and seven
at the time) down to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World, (which opened in 1971), where we spent an unforgettable week in the park at the Polynesian Resort, and I found that Walt Disney had taken his vision of a theme park to an entirely new level. We liked it so much we joined the Disney Vacation Club, and have since used our membership to vacation at Walt Disney World on a myriad of occasions, staying at various resorts within the park - the Boardwalk, the Animal Kingdom, Saratoga, the Polynesian and most recently the Beach Club. Wherever we travel on the property, we find Disney has created a storyline for all of us to follow. From the theming of the resorts, the focused attentiveness of park staff, the unique, one-of-a-kind attractions, the myriad dining options to the interactive ride queues at the
parks, Disney's absolute attention to detail immerses you in the action in such a way that other theme parks all aspire to, but never quite attain, actually bringing the story to life. You are a “guest," not just a visitor and employees are "cast members,” not just staff. And they back it all up with cleanliness and maintenance policies that keep everything looking fresh and inviting. Instead of being tedious, Disney’s ability to sprinkle even your wait in line with a little bit of pixie dust, builds your anticipation while making time pass much more quickly. After the hot Florida sun sets, nothing caps off your day quite like one of the nighttime spectaculars that Disney World features in their parks. "Wishes Nighttime Spectacular" at the Magic Kingdom,

Just An Idea
Dear Editor: (In response to your April 13th Letter To the Editor by writer Ruth Graves): There is a Facebook Page called Breezy/ Rockaway Flea Market (aka Breezy/Rockaway Yard Sale on line), that connects people of the Rockaways with for sale or free items. They can be found at facebook.com/groups/bpyardsale/ Dianna Maeurer Helping Hand
Dear Editor: I love Ruth Graves' idea of a Rockaway Freecycle website. There is a free neighborhood website called Next-
door, which is a private social network where neighbors can connect and can post all sorts of things like free items, items for sale by owner, recommendations etc. It's a great communication tool for a multitude of things. Although I am not able to launch and maintain a website alone, if there are people out there who are interested in setting up a Rockaway Nextdoor website, send me an email. I'd be happy to help! Dear Editor: (In response to 4/13 article about $8 Ferry parking): What a ripoff. The parking space is near the newer Ferry dock station in the part of the Rockaways, where there are a lot of middle-income and low-income families living there, in which some of them don't have a choice but using an automobile from their place of residence to the expensive parking lot for a park-andride. Give the people of the

Rockaways a major break for once. Pedro Valdez Rivera Jr. Dog Danger
Dear Editor: I was just taking an exercise walk down Jarvis Ave in Far Rockaway, when an adult, angry, unleashed, collared pit bull came charging at me. I was on public property, jogging on the sidewalk, when this loose attacker came my way. I had to jump atop a nearby, parked minivan to prevent being mauled by this pit bull. Seconds later, a second huge dog came barking and charging at me. It too was collared but unleashed and not fenced in. The owner was nowhere in sight. 911 did nothing about the incident. I am a student at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and a mother to three young children, one of which is a nursing threemonth-old. If a person would have to defend him/herself from such a dog, he/she would sustain a very serious injury. I am writing to call communal attention to this incident. Perhaps
public support can put pressure on local authorities to protect pedestrians. Judy Bush No to SFP Parking!
Dear Editor: What I don't get is how somebody that sleeps in Arverne is pushing parking in Rockaway Beach and Rockaway Park. The stakeholders that live from 73rd to 108th Street are overwhelmingly against parking on Shorefront Parkway! I therefore appeal to my fellow community leaders to support the people who live in the Shorefront Parkway area and speak out against the DOT's plan to put metered parking anywhere on Shorefront Parkway. On Nutrition
THE SPRING GROCERY LIST
By Megan Casper
It’s Spring! The grass is growing, flowers are blooming, and fresh fruits and vegetables are finally making their way back onto shelves. After a long winter, seasonal, local produce is a welcome change to our taste buds. Instead of being plucked half-ripened and shipped across the country, seasonal produce spends longer on the vine or tree and can be harvested when it’s ready, giving it a boost in both flavor and nutrition (and it may even be easier on your wallet too). Here are our top picks for your grocery list!
ARTICHOKES: In season from March to May, these edible porcupines are filled with nutrition. Not only are they number seven on the USDA’s top antioxidant-rich foods list, they’re also filled with vitamins folate, C and K, and fiber. To prepare, clip off the sharp ends, boil or steam, and peel the leaves off one by one. ASPARAGUS: While largely available all year, you can support your local farmers by buying them through June. These crunchy little spears are filled with antioxidants that have been shown to help protect against some cancers. For the best taste

and nutrition, try roasting, grilling or stir-frying, all of which help to preserve vitamins. LEAFY GREENS: Per Grow NYC, beet greens, lettuce, mesclun, spinach, and turnip greens are all available beginning in spring. Dark leafy greens are good sources of many vitamins (A, C, K and folate) and minerals (iron and calcium). They're also great sources of fiber, and an easy way to get your five veggies a day. Mix up a salad, sauté up a side, or add some crunch to your sandwich. RHUBARB: These brightly colored stems get their hue from powerful antioxidants that promote a healthy heart, eyes and immune system, as well as help prevent cancer. Rhubarb is typically served with a hearty dose of sugar due to its tart flavor. For a more healthy addition to your diet, try adding it to your oatmeal, mixed in your fruit cup, or as
a chutney or sauce on a meaty dish. SCALLIONS: Add flavor to your plate with the addition of these spring onions. Not only are they filled with vitamins A and K, antioxidants, and fiber, they are also super easy to grow. Snip some off the top and garnish your next meal. STRAWBERRIES: Available in late spring, just one cup of strawberries is a sweet way to get over a whole daily serving of vitamin C. Strawberries have been linked to boosting immunity, lowering the risk of cancer, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and improving cognitive function. With a resume like that, how can you resist? From smoothies to salads to desserts, strawberries are an easy addition to your diet. Continued from Page 15 "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” at Epcot, "Fantasmic!" at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and "Rivers of Light" at the Animal Kingdom literally all end your day with a bang! As an interesting aside, I know rude behavior and profanity are almost taken for granted these days, and after two tours in the Marine Corps and 30 plus years in Corrections, my ears are anything but virgin. The character and atmosphere of Walt Disney World that immediately envelops everyone who enters the park clearly defines the park as first and foremost a place for families. Rude behavior and foul language, unlike elsewhere in our daily lives, is the exception and not the rule at Disney World. Even though some events and activities can seem really adult-oriented, like the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, it’s still Disney World, and there are still kids everywhere, and I have yet to witness any untoward be-

In closing, let me state for the record that I realize there are two types of people in this world, those who love visiting Walt Disney World, and those who don't. Grace, myself and our two daughters, Amy and Victoria (now 22 and 21 years old), all suffer from O.D.D., (Obsessive Disney Disorder the only cure for which is yet another trip down south to visit with Mickey and his friends, so I guess you know which segment of the population we fall into). As for the second group, I guess some people who simply lost their love for Disney as they grew up - or never had it in the first place - just can't wrap their heads around how a grown-up could continue enjoying Disney theme parks, and all they offer. As for me, at 67 years of age with bum gams, you may find me zipping around the park in a scooter, but I still wear my mouse ears proudly! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Facts You Probably Don’t Need Killer whales are able to learn to speak Dolphin. When killer whales were socialized with bottlenose dolphins at a water facility, they changed the types of sounds they made to resemble those of their social partners. After complaints about baggage wait times, Houston airport moved the baggage claim farther away. The walk took longer than the wait and the complaints dropped to nearly zero. Disney almost created a theme park for villains called "The Dark Kingdom." A man once tried to sue Pepsi because he found a mouse in his can of Mountain Dew. Pepsi defended the case by proving that Mountain Dew can dissolve a mouse in a few months. Henry Shrapnel in 1784 invented a hollow cannon ball that would be filled with shot and gun powder and exploded over the enemies. Water is used in rice fields to prevent weeds. Rice doesn't actually need that much water, but since it can thrive in such conditions, whereas weeds cannot, it's a natural protection against them. In 2014 only seven humans were killed by sharks while over 63,000,000 sharks were killed by humans. We use "lbs" as shorthand for pounds in English because of the latin phrase "libra poundo", which is also where we derived "pounds" from. My Name is Sally
By Sally Imperato
I am at the end of my life now, winding down, “ready for Freddy,” whoever Freddy is. I am housebound, I have exhausted my friend’s visiting capabilities with a three-month hospital stay. I have worn out my children. I have made peace with my God, received all the blessings I can have; I have nothing but time on my hands. I find myself reflecting on “my story.” Everyone has one. When my children were small, I remember someone talking about someone being bored. I wondered what boredom was. I am of Swedish heritage on my father’s side, and southern Italian on my mom’s. All my cousins have blond hair and blue eyes. I had brown hair and brown eyes. Then I married an Italian man and got an Italian last name to match my hair and eyes. But my heart has always been Swedish. I am named after my Swedish grandmother and wanted to be just like her…and except
for her coloring, I am. My parents married late in life and there the depression; I am an only child. I grew up in Canarsie, which at the time was serviced only by a trolley car. The streets were not paved, and except for the grocery store that was
part of the four-family house I grew up in with my Italian grandparents, there was not another store. Once a week, a horse-drawn cart came with ice, meat, eggs and milk. For some reason, the only meat he had was lamb chops. They are still my go-to supper, along with potatoes and carrots, the only vegetables I ever remember having. I had a favorite aunt who lived in the house. She was a nurse and the mother of my cousin Paul, who was my age, and eight years later, my twin girl cousins whom we babysat. We were like siblings. One twin passed away at a young age and to this day, although we live states and states apart, we cousins are very close. Paul and I were neckand-neck to be valedictorian at grammar school graduation. Conveniently for him, a week before graduation, I broke my leg and the decision was made. I broke my leg playing “whip,” when one of the boys swung me a little too hard. That boy later became the fellow I dated for seven years. Everyone, including me, thought we would marry. There wasn’t a high school in Canarsie at the time. I went to Bishop McDonnell and cousin Paul went to Brooklyn Tech. Our schools were one stop apart on the train, so we traveled together, further strengthening the bond. I loved Bishops and I did well there. I was in the same grade as Helen Boyle, (mother of Rockaway Times publisher Kevin Boyle), but I did not remember meeting her there. As married with children and serving as Eucharistic ministers at St. Francis de Sales, she

and I spent a lot of time together. High School was something that never came up in conversation.
My mother had a dream for me. I was to be a school teacher. Her dream was not my dream. My friends were reading comic books. I was reading first aid books. When I applied to nursing school, my mom tore up my acceptance letter, and my family moved to Florida. We lived in a trailer park. The shower was down the road, the whole thing. I was miserable. I met a fellow who had a motorcycle and asked for a ride to the local hospital. I got a job there as a nurses aid from 4-12 p.m. Mom thought I was on a date every night. I loved what I was doing…I can still give a great back rub. I did some research and found that Kings County School of Nursing had everything I needed. Tuition was free, you lived there, you got uniforms and they gave you an eight dollar a week stipend for personal things. So as soon as I had airfare, off I went. I left a note. It was not long until my parents came back north. They left Canarsie and moved to East Meadow. I would not accept any help from them.
The Rockaway Times
I loved it, I loved every area I worked in. I knew I had made the right decision. I felt I had outgrown my boyfriend and he took the breakup badly. But, he quickly moved on and married a lovely “Canarsie girl;” had an army career and moved to Spokane, Washington. That is about as far as one can get from Brooklyn. At graduation, I did not get the most prestigious award, I got the one I wanted, the Nursing Arts Award. My first job was teaching “communicable disease nursing techniques” at the Kingston Avenue Hospital. It was during the time I was there, that communicable diseases became obsolete and the hospital closed. There were vaccines for measles and mumps, tuberculosis and polio. I actually took care of patients in an “iron lung.” Tuberculosis prevention came a little later; those patients were sent to state facilities. I went back to Kings County Hospital, which had then joined with Down State. There was a little laboratory at the end of the hall where I was assigned, and the doctor who worked there stayed to himself. We wondered what he did there because he had two cats in cages that he hummed to and spoke to. I found out. One day he beckoned me in there. He was Dr. William Dock, and he did the first cardiac catheterizations on cats. I was fascinated and happy to be a part of his work. One evening as I was giving out medications, holding them in a wire type basket, around 10 p.m. or so, when a “hospital mouse” ran across my feet. Woops went the basket…meds all over the floor. Just then some tired looking intern stepped off the elevator and started laughing at me. Not funny! Fast forward, three years later, I married him. Then my name matched my coloring.

Watch For Warfarin
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
By Peter Galvin, MD
Coumadin, generically known as warfarin, is a common anticoagulant or blood clot preventer. It interferes with the function of vitamin K. Vitamin K is an integral agent in the series of chemical steps, also known as the clotting cascade, that make the proteins essential for blood clotting. Because warfarin is broken down, or metabolized in the liver, there are a number of drugs and agents that interfere with its function. The therapeutic effectiveness of warfarin is measured by testing the International Normalized Ratio (INR). Warfarin, as well as other anticoagulants, should be used with caution. Drugs that can cause
The Rockaway Times
bleeding like other anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs (Plavix, aspirin), NSAIDs (i.e. Aleve, Advil), and SSRI’s (Zoloft, Prozac), should be lightly used if not avoided with warfarin. Herbal and OTC products like garlic, ginkgo biloba, co-enzyme Q-10, St. John’s wort, ginseng, echinacea, grapefruit juice and goldenseal may interfere with warfarin. INR should be checked after taking antibiotics or antifungals. Dietary vitamin K, found in green, leafy vegetables, may lessen the effectiveness of warfarin (lower INR). A recent study looked at other things that interfere with warfarin. Marijuana interferes with warfarin breakdown causing an increased INR. Cigarettes do the
opposite, or lower INR. Smokeless tobacco contains vitamin K and will lower INR. One should remember then that stopping a behavior, for example quitting smoking, will have the opposite effect on INR. Treatment with warfarin requires frequent monitoring of the INR. Other anticoagulants like Xarelto and Pradaxa do not require any testing. They work by interfering with a protein in the clotting cascade (not vitamin K), causing the blood to clot more slowly. There is one big difference in the two types of drugs though. Warfarin’s effect can be reversed with giving vitamin K. Drugs like Xarelto cannot be reversed with vitamin K, and there is no commonly available reversing agent (although one agent was recently released and more are in development). If you are placed on an anticoagulant be sure to discuss your use of marijuana and tobacco products with your doctor.
As an aside I would like to share with you an interesting anecdotal report in a recent journal. A 65-year-old man with a history of high cholesterol, presented to his primary care doctor for a checkup. He specifically denied having chest pain. His doctor noticed an unusual pattern of fabric wear over the left chest area of his sweatshirt. When his doctor asked him why his shirt was worn in that one particular area, his reply was that he had left-sided chest pressure every time he exerted himself over the past 6 months or so. It felt better when he rubbed the area. He wound up with a coronary artery bypass graft. The author of the article called it “The sweatshirt sign.” The author’s point was that patients often will not equate pressure with pain, so it’s important to ask about both. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Chicken Avocado Mixed Salad Courtesy of Joel Mielle
Ingredients: For the Poaching Liquid: 2 chicken breasts 2 bay leaves 1 tbsp black peppercorns 1 tbsp salt (this varies with the amount of water) For the Dressing: Half cup packed fresh basil
leaves 1 lemon 1 garlic clove Salt and Pepper For the Salad: 16 green beans 1 tomato A few fresh basil leaves 1 cup arugula (rocket) leaves Half a ripe avocado
Cracked pepper Directions: Add cold water to a saucepan along with the bay leaves, peppercorns and salt. Place the skinless chicken breast in the cold water and turn on the heat to low and bring to a simmer. Cover with a lid and turn heat off. Leave aside. For the dressing, remove the stalks from the fresh basil and place the leaves in a blender. You can also use a stick blender. Add the juice of one lemon, olive oil and salt & pepper, then blitz until very smooth. After 30 minutes, remove the chicken breast from the cooking liquid, reheat the water and blanch the green beans in the same water. Once cooked, refresh under cold water and strain. Place a cutter or a mould in the center of your plate to begin stacking. Add a few
shreds of fresh basil on the bottom. Then add slices of half a tomato by overlapping each slice. Add half the green beans, you can cut them if too long. Top with some of the basil dressing (stir well before using). Add some arugula (rocket) leaves, top with basil dressing, then slice the chicken and add half the chicken slices by overlapping each piece. Top with basil dressing. Peel the avocado, remove stone and slice width wise. Push down to fan slices and place half over the top of the chicken. Top with basil dressing and cracked pepper.

Taking Care of Our Elders My parents raised seven children and gave us everything. They were there for us throughout all the trials and tribulations one goes through while growing up. Yes, they chose to have us all. We did not owe them anything, but we knew there was an obligation to care for them in sickness or health. They brought us into this world and provided us with a safe home with love and affection. We were a family that stood by one another and tried to do the right thing. Unfortunately, my mom at the young age of 61 died of cancer, and we were only able to care for her for two years while she was sick. My dad lived until 83, but suffered with Alzheimer’s. We cared for him with the help of
hired caregivers in his own home. It was difficult but we were able to keep him somewhat comfortable and visit with him on a regular basis. He was a great guy and gave us so much love and support throughout the years. He was our rock. Not everyone can afford to live in their own home with hired help full time. There are community-based services through NYC Human Resources Administration that can help defray the cost to keep your loved one at home in familiar surroundings. If you need to select a place that will better address the needs of your loved one, there are some beautiful assisted living homes that help in the transition for an aging parent. People are afraid to move into them, but
there are some nice ones with so many social activities to stay engaged, active and happy. It is so important to visit regularly and be a part of your love one’s new life. Too many people are left alone as they get older. Even if they don’t remember you, they need you to be there for them. You remember them. I think it is really important to take care of our aging population. We will all grow old one day and how do we want to be treated? We all want to live a long, beautiful life, but realistically we may become sick or injured at some point in our lives. Who will care for you? Does it make sense to make arrangements for yourself so you are in a place where you want to be? Yes, I think it is necessary
to make plans. My experience so far has been that you need to know how you want to live if you can’t take care of yourself. I am thinking as long as I am near the water in a beautiful home with music in the afternoons and tea time with my friends I will be ok. Yoga everyday and maybe happy hour too! Meditation, healthy food and good company. I want my family to visit me even if I don’t remember you. You remember me, and know how I have lived and brought you up to do the right thing. It is our obligation as a society to take care of our elders. They are so full of wisdom and spirit, offering their life’s experience. Do not forget where you come from. One life to live. Live it well. Love and honor your family, and stay close even when times get tough.

THE RAUNT, N.Y. – JAMAICA BAY – 1912 By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter Katie Lucev
After the New York, Woodhaven and Rockaway Beach Railroad opened its rail line over Jamaica Bay to the big Hotel at Rockaway Park in the early 1880’s, the owners began renting space on the 150 foot right of way to those who wished to build hotels and fishing stations alongside the bay trestle. As a result, four fishing villages became fact in Jamaica Bay between the Rockaways and Howard Beach. Going south to north from the Rockaway Peninsula were Beach Channel, Broad Channel, The Raunt and Goose Creek. Each had a station with platforms and track cross overs except the Beach Channel stop, which was very small in comparison.
The railroad trestle consisted of well over 1000 pile support sections called, ‘Bents,’ which supported the ties and track. Each bent was tagged, beginning with number one at Howard Beach and the last number at Rockaway Beach. This is how the railroad would keep track of spots rented out. The original Bay Railroad became the Long Island Railroad. The NYC Rapid Transit System now runs over Jamaica Bay to the Rockaways. Today we feature a 1912 photo of Sehy’s East Side Hotel and Fishing Station at the Raunt Village. To the right of the ladies on the station platform are numbered pile bent uprights which show numbers 581, 580, 579 and so forth to the north end of the Raunt Station Platform.
An old ad for the East Side Hotel at the Raunt described the place as: • Easily reached by the L.I.R.R. Rockaway Beach Division. • Best accommodations for Fishermen on Long Island. • First Class Bar & Restaurant. • Good boats for .50 cents per day. Sunday & Holidays .75
cents. • Most central spot on Jamaica Bay. All the best fishing grounds easily reached from here. • Telephone, 343-L Hammels. • The Raunt, 46 minutes from New York. • Open ALL Year Round. • Fallert Beer on tap.

Piece of the Puzzle, Inc., Wellcare, St. John's Episcopal Hospital, Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center and Stop & Shop Supermarket, who provided food and drinks for everyone. The Association awarded certificates of recognition honoring Parks Dept. administrative staff and seasonal workers, whom Ferguson praised as “the unsung heroes who take care of our green spaces, beaches and playground, and make everyday a clean, safe welcoming space for our community.” Under the stewardship of the Association’s Board Secretary Deborah Shorte, local children participated in “It’s My Park Day’s Teachable Moment” by learning about the earth and planting their own cups of wildflowers.
I resort back to the old fashioned bleach cleaner and water. You should only add about 1 cup of bleach (maximum) per gallon of water and be sure to use gloves. Bleach can irritate your hands. Another thing that works well on vinyl furniture is siding cleaner, like they sell for power washers. You can use most brands straight out of the bottle, or dilute it a little if you like. When cleaning patio furniture, use a rag or soft bristle
scrub brush. Don’t use power washers or anything with high pressure. Not saying it can’t be used, but unless you have experience working with equipment like this, it is very easy to damage your furniture. If you find a spot is very tough to get out, let it soak, that will usually do the gob. With the warmer weather here, next week I will cover power washer. If you have an idea for future projects, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

Earth Day last Saturday, April 22 may have been a dreary day with grey skies and misty rain, but in the hearts of those who participated in Friends of Beach 59th Street Playground Association’s “It’s My Park Day Earth Day Cleanup and Community Visioning event” — it was a bright and sunny day. According to the Association’s Board President Florence Ferguson, over sixty people dove in to help including Assemblywoman Stacy Pheffer Amato, NYC Parks Dept. First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kevanagh, Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Dorothy Lewendowsky, Parks Rockaway Administrator Portia Dyrenforth, Council Donovan Richards’ Chief of Staff Mercedes Buchanan, 100 and 101 Pre-
cincts Explorers, Virgin America Airlines representatives, and local adults and children. Ferguson said, “Even with the weather, we had a fabulous day. We got so much support
Cleaning Up That Patio Furniture By Artie Wallace
With spring upon us, you’ll surely be looking to spend more time in the yard or on the porch. That means it’s time to start cleaning the patio/deck furniture. I see a lot of sites recommending using a mix of vinegar and water, some say to add

a touch of dishwashing soap. I am sure that works well, but I still like using a cleaner. With living near the beach, every spring there’s a buildup of grime from the salt air, the winter elements, fuel discharge from the planes, etc. A bad combination. I find using a product called Simple Green (concentrated general purpose cleaner) mixed in a 1:1 ratio with water works wonders. For tough spots, I pour a little on undiluted and let it sit for a few minutes, then go over it with the mix. The best thing about this product (and mix) is it is safe for most fabrics, cushions, etc. as well as the furniture. For white lawn furniture,

The Downswing By Kelley Brooke
Welcome back! It’s finally beginning to feel like golf season! Last week we discussed the backswing and how to properly coil your upper body against your lower body. This week we will take that coil and unwind it into a powerful downswing. The sequence of the downswing is the polar opposite of the backswing. In the backswing we start from the sky down; starting the backswing with the shoulders and chest first, then the hips and then the knees. The downswing is
started from the ground up; knees, hips, chest, hands and clubhead. Initiate your downswing by pulling with your front knee and front hip. Your weight will transfer to the front leg. Once your weight has transferred, it is important to straighten the front leg and quickly turn
your hips. The front leg will transform into an axis and your upper body will fire over it. This creates a tremendous amount of clubhead speed through centrifugal force You can also think of the downswing as a race to the finish line. Your belt buckle crosses the finish line first. Your chest crosses second. Your hands cross third and then the club head crosses the finish line last. Get out and enjoy this beautiful weather! Next week we will fix your slice! Remember to practice with a purpose!

ROCK RUGBY RECAP
On April 23, Rockaway's middle school teams traveled to Randall's Island to face off against fellow founding member of the NYC Metro Rugby League. Rockaway's U12 defeated Manhattan 30-25 by stunting the much larger opponents’ power running offense with well-executed tackling and countering with proficient open field play. The U12 move to 3-0 on the season with previous wins over Pelham and South Shore. In a game that mirrored their younger teammates, Rockaway's U14 also beat Manhattan 30-25 in much the same style. This win brings the U14 squad to 2-1 on the season with a previous loss to Pelham and win over South Shore. Both teams travel this Sunday to play Connecticut powerhouse Aspetuck Rugby. Little League Recap COME-FROM-BEHIND VICTORIES
Last week, Rockaway Little League was treated to two “Games of the Week,” both come-from-behind thrillers. In Major Girls, the BBA Bonnies flipped the Elegante Flippers 13-11 while in Minor Boys the Mahoney Real Estate Royals turned the tables on the Henry Myers Plumbing Diamondbacks, 8-7. The Bonnies were powered by Cece Agoglia who slugged a grand slam and a triple. Amanda Guiseppone had her pitching debut and delivered a solid performance along with Julianna Arena who closed the game. Francesca Zito helped with excellent fielding, throwing a runner out at third. Virginia Gallagher also played great at third. The girls came up big to climb back and win. The Royals victory was just as tight thanks to a balanced team effort. Ben Gressel, Ryan Wiley, Jonathan Lazo, and Con-
nor McElhinney (double, HR) each rapped out two hits and knocked in runs. Speedy thieves James Mone (2 steal) and Logan Monahan (3 steals) scored two runs apiece. Matthew Schneider made a great defensive play at third base to prevent an extra base hit and help solidify the win. McElhinney pitched three innings and struck out seven. He leads the team in strikeouts with 20. In Minor Girls, the Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm continued on an undefeated roll with strong pitching and hitting by Delaney Somerville and Carly Intrabartolo. Matilda Puckhaber, Catherine Rudolph, Maeve Grace and Mary Doyle backed up their hurlers with great glove work. A couple of strong hits by Gianna Malucelli and Grace Hall helped secure an 11-2 victory over the Paul’s Bike Shop Gators. At 4-0, the Red Storm share Rockaway Lit-
tle League’s best record along with the Graybeards Hilltoppers in Major Girls. The Wave Publishing Giants (Minor Boys) and the Pico Mariners (Pee Wee Seniors) are also off to strong starts at 3-0-1. The Mariners avoided their first loss by rallying to tie the Walsh Management Reds. Down by six runs in their last at bat, they tied the game with a timely single by Roderick Fordham, a Home Run by Isahia Tawil and a huge Grand Slam by Matt McKnight. Joe Tomasseti and Travis Peterson were the hitting stars for the Reds. The game ended 1111 after the exciting finish. DIAMOND DUST: Saturday is the annual Opening Day Gala – assuming the Federal government doesn’t shut down and close Ft. Tilden…
Once again Rockaway Little League will be going to see the Cyclones. Tickets ($15.00) are on sale now...Put the Home Run Derby (April 28) and the Pitch, Hit & Run Contest (May 12) in your calendar…Rockaway Little League’s new website is rockawaylittleleagueny. website.siplay.com.
Surfing in the Tokyo Olympics – Really?
A lot has been going on in the world of surfing recently, with many nations hustling to get their national teams together. But there just isn’t as much hype on mainland USA. All of this is interesting because there is this push to get surfing into the Olympics. The world-wide surf community is evenly split, 50-50, for and against. As it is, the World Surf League can’t even hold a title sponsor for more than a few years. The fact that the international body supporting surfing is in this kind of predicament makes me question if it can be successful in the Olympics. Even International Surfing Association President Fernando Aguerre, who was the key instrument in getting surfing into the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, has been struggling to get financial support from the
surfing industry, which became apparent during his recent update with industry executives in Laguna Beach, CA this past week. “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” Aguerre said. There is also a huge financial incentive to securing a permanent spot – money from the Olympics then flows into the organizing body of the sport. Right now, surfing does not have access to those resources. That’s also why Fernando was asking/ begging industry executives to continue to support Friends of Olympic Surfing, which helps with costs as the demands on the ISA ramp up even more. And this where it starts to sound a little comical to me. Aguerre shared some details about how surfing will be presented. There will be a twoweek surf beach festival on the water 50 minutes from Tokyo. The idea is to showcase all that the surfing lifestyle represents with bands, surf lessons, yoga

in the mornings, art, and environmental activations. Really? Beach Blanket Bingo to sway the masses? It’s always been interesting to see which company was ballsy enough to support surfing internationally. Surfing has not always had the most pristine image, such as golf. And there’s an interesting history to that. Internationally renowned surf writer Nick Carrol had this to say in an interview: “The thing about Coke not seeing surfing as the hip and groovy number one subculture it was in the '70s, is the exact thing that’s happening now. Smirnoff/Heublein, a big backer of the Hawaiian tour in the early '70s, commissioned a marketing agency at the time to explain to them why they should get involved. The report reads like something out of Mad Men: "Surfers are the new people, the trailblazers," ahead of society's curve, showing us new ways to live. In Australia, Coca-Cola bottlers rode the unstructured, free-form and rather
dangerous surfing image of the time into major ongoing profit; surfing helped them do that most difficult marketing thing, which was re-set their image for the times. But such times always also run out; Heublein were out of surfing by 1980 and Coke finally bailed in 1998, after many attempts to recapture the magic. Like you can't call surfing culture a social trailblazer anymore, it's not just for rebellious kids at all, parents don't hate surfers anymore, they ARE surfers. That ship has so sailed. But I think Ian Cairns, an expro surfer from Australia and USA surfing team coach put it in a nutshell: “It's a beer and meat pie sport being run on a champagne and caviar budget. You know the WSL surfers have lost the plot when Outerknown (Kelly Slater’s clothing brand) sells $100 t-shirts and losers fly off Tavarua Island, Fiji on a helicopter. They are so far removed from the reality of their audience.” Let’s see how this pans out.

LACROSSE CLUB OF ROCKAWAY SEASON UNDERWAY
The Lacrosse Club of Rockaway (LCR) Natives Spring Season is off to a great start. Two hundred boys and girls from the Rockaway Peninsula in five age groups (ranging from 5-14 years old) participate in organized lacrosse. The 6-years-old and younger (6u) boys and girls participate in Sunday morning clinics. The clinics are designed to introduce the fundamentals of lacrosse: scooping, cradling, passing, catching, shooting and playing defense in a fun environment. The players really love the competitive games of: relay races, egg hunts, musical sticks and others. The Lady Natives Clinic is
coached by Colleen Hickey and Kevin O’Rourke. The Boys Clinic is coached by Kevin O’Rourke and Rob Luhrs. Both clinics are assisted by the entire LCR coaching staff. The Boys 8-years-old and younger (8u) team had their first intra-squad scrimmage, coached by Andrew Sheridan and Charles Turbak, in preparations for the first game this spring vs Brooklyn Lacrosse. The Ladies 8-years-old and younger (8u) has had tremendous participation and passion from all players coached by Liz Bianco and assisted by Ralph Bianco. They are excited for their first-ever game this Sunday. The 10u Lady Natives are eager to compete together for the second time this spring. Coach Danielle Sheridan’s bunch has been working hard, improving and having fun.

Coach Pat Lane and assistant Alexis Arguello’s Boy’s 10u Natives have shown lots of potential and dedication in all three games this season. They will be competing hard again this Sunday. Coach Collen Hickey wears many hats for LC Rockaway, besides being the director of the Lady Natives and heading the Lady Clinic, her 12u team is an example of what talent and hard work is capable of in their first contest against Doc’s NYC. Coach Andrew Sheridan is another volunteer that has many responsibilities with the Natives. Coach Sheridan coaches the 8u squad, assists at all levels, and his 12u team has been showing steady improvement and great potential. Coach Ralph Bianco pulls triple lacrosse duty in the Spring. On top of his responsibilities for the inaugural Fontbonne Hall Academy girls lacrosse team, he assists with
the 8u team, and his 14u Lady Natives are a dedicated and seasoned bunch, with many of the players having been with the program for four years now. Coach Ralph and his assistants, Tricia Davey and Tim Butler, see only good things for the 14u Lady Natives this season and going forward into high school and beyond. The boys 14u Natives are a passionate and energetic bunch that Coach Mickey Blum, John Mullaly and Andrew Sheridan have seen great improvement and competitiveness over the past four season. They have competed hard in their three games so far this season. Come cheer on the Natives as all teams are in action this Sunday at Beach Channel High School or Aviator Fields. Visit LCROCKAWAY.COM for more information on the LCR Natives Lacrosse programs. (This article was submitted by the LCR staff ).
