On Tuesday, to mark National Superheroes Day, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (SJEH) team members who are on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19 were met with applause from the hospital’s executive and senior management teams. While observing social distancing guidelines, management team members grabbed hand clappers and lined up around the hospital’s main entrance at
7 a.m. to deliver a rousing round of applause. “It’s been a rough two months,” Jerry Walsh, Chief Executive Officer, said to the socially distanced crowd while referring to the COVID-19 pandemic that has hit the Rockaways particularly hard. “You are the true heroes, and as we recognize you on National Superheroes Day, know that we appreciate each and every one of you every day all year round.”
Well, we hope it worked. If you’re reading this online, after getting our weekly email, that’s a good sign. We tried something different this week by including the weekly paper with short videos and links to some Rockaway businesses. It’s a work in progress, by me, a guy with serious tech limitations. But I figured, it’s fun, different, and highlights local businesses that could all use a boost. I think, generally, websites for small businesses sound like a sensible thing but well, they mostly die of loneliness. People don’t know they exist or forget about them and then the website owner starts neglecting it and then don’t bother with it much at all. But I’m hoping RockawayTimesTV.com will drive customers to local business websites and Facebook

“I don’t want to live in a world where I can’t go to Rogers at 11 o’clock, have a few drinks and a good time and then go home at 1 o’clock. And then be home for a little while and decide I have still have energy, so I go back and close the place. And then get something to eat at Pickles and Pies and then go home for good. That’s the world I want back. I’m 67 years old or 68, whatever I am. I can’t be locked in anymore. This is nuts. No beach? This is nuts.� The speaker will remain anonymous, although some might guess his identity. He exercises regularly, including posting his workouts online. He does curls with 2-litre Coke bottles. Sometimes, he’s hard to understand because he eats potato chips

while doing some of the drills. Loud chewing aside, the speaker reflects a growing sentiment. Lockdown fatigue. Enough already. Not sure if I disagree. Although I might frame it differently. I mean, even in pre-corona days, if I stayed in Rogers until close, I’d put myself in a lockdown and wear a mask for a couple of months, at least. Anyway, I have to admit to getting antsy. It seems to me, spring fever is the next epidemic. If the sun is shining and the temps inch above 60, I’m going out. And by the looks of it, on a couple of recent spring days, everyone has the same idea. It’s easy to be disciplined when it’s cold and rainy. But if the sun peeks out, I’m going out for some Vitamin D. You’ve probably heard that Sweden is managing the corona crisis differently than other countries. Sweden has voluntary social distancing
and a lot of businesses have stayed open. And it seems to be working fine, relatively. Yes, yes, there are some buts. Sweden has a high death percentage among those who contract Covid-19 but a high percentage of those deaths occur in elder care facilities. And yes, there are scientists in Sweden who do advocate for more stringent measures. So, not everyone is happy there. But, but, but the vast majority of people in Sweden are in favor of the policy and other Swedish scientists believe herd immunity is well underway. (Herd immunity means more than 70 percent of the people have already been infected and have recovered). I get it. We’re not sure if antibody tests are wholly accurate. We’re not sure if people can get the virus again. We’re not sure of a lot of things. But I am sure the lockdown can’t go on and on. I remember when people who were smoking cigarettes
would pretty much blow that smoke in your face. Or they would light up at the table next to you in a restaurant and you’d see the smoke snaking its way right over your meal. People smoked on airplanes, fer crissake. Going back further, to the 1800s, some New York City streets had knee-high garbage, which included horse manure and household trash. Society now agrees that smoking should be restricted and dumping garbage in the streets is not cool, I’m confident we can adjust to new reasonable norms. Smokers still light up in places they shouldn’t, but it’s rare. Littering hasn’t been cured because there are jerks and there always will be. But I think society can be sensible. I do. To me, as long as the health care system can handle new cases, it’s full Swede ahead. I just want to have the option of going to Rogers at 1 in the morning.

Shelter Residents Draw Concern During Coronavirus Crisis

As people are being advised to stay home, the increasing number of residents at Rockaway’s new homeless shelter are making their presence known. Several recent incidents are causing concern among neighbors. On the morning of Monday, April 27, activity at the shelter at 226 Beach 101st Street, drew some unwanted attention. According to NYPD’s DCPI, at 9:40 a.m., an assault occurred inside the entryway to the building. After a verbal dispute, a 57-year-old female guard was thrown into a wall and then to the ground by one of the residents. The incident became a public scene when police arrived to arrest the suspect, 26-year-old Wakeen Knight, who resisted, according to DCPI. The incident was caught on video by neighbors who overheard the commotion. As Knight was being arrested, two other men are seen screaming at police as they conducted the arrest. According to NYPD, Knight was eventually apprehended and charged with assault, harassment and resisting arrest. We reached out to the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) about the incident, to which a spokesperson replied, “In these unprecedented times, tensions and stress levels are high for all New Yorkers across our city and state, regardless of housing status,” she said, confirming the recent incident. “Of course, protecting the safety of those we serve remains our top one priority, now more than ever––and our staff, including shelter security, continue reporting for duty every day, dedicated to supporting and protecting our City’s most vulnerable residents. We continue to work hard to help them get
back on their feet in safety and security, no matter what." The new shelter opened in late February, despite not having a contract funded. According to those from Rockaway Solutions Not Shelters (RSNS), who have a pending lawsuit against the shelter, due to the way the shelter was established with a temporary Certificate of Occupancy, it could not be filled to capacity, and would be filled at a rate of about 10 men a month. If that remains true, the shelter would have at least 20 men out of the 108-resident capacity. DHS would not confirm the number of residents in the shelter. With the shelter allegedly not anywhere near capacity, the recent issues have neighbors fearing what may come when it does. Monday’s incident follows several other recent complaints by neighbors noticing shelter residents loitering in front of local businesses, urinating in public, playing loud music during late night hours and gathering in groups to smoke and hang out in front of the currently-closed senior center across the street. “I’m so sick over this,” Torey Schnupp, an activist for RSNS and Democratic District Leader candidate, said. “The concern is that if there’s only 20 to 30 people right now, I can’t imagine what it will be like when there’s 108 people.” Schnupp says that she and others have felt unsafe since their new neighbors have arrived. “There’s this very uneasy feeling. I walked down that street and I felt intimidated. Homeowners on Beach 101st Street tell me they’re scared to walk on their own block now. I feel concerned for me and my neighbors’ safety.” Additionally, according to reContinued on page 7

cent photos, while engaging in these activities, the shelter residents have not been practicing social distancing or wearing face masks, at a time when New Yorkers are being advised to do so to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Also on Monday, neighbors noticed an ambulance respond to the shelter to transport a resident to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. The reason is unknown. These issues occur as homeless New Yorkers are being heavily impacted by coronavirus. We asked DHS if Rockaway’s shelter has been affected by COVID-19, but they would not confirm. “We cannot comment on specific cases or clients who we serve,” a spokesperson said. Citywide, as of Monday, April 27, 763 homeless individuals have tested positive, the overwhelming majority of which are those in shelters, with 165 shelters being impacted, according to DHS. Most of those impacted
THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2020 shelters are those made for single adults, rather than families. DHS says 55 homeless individuals have died, but they’ve been attempting to reduce these numbers by relocating people from some of the larger locations, especially those who are ill or at high risk. DHS says more than 500 have been discharged from isolation as their conditions were resolved. DHS did not address the recent quality of life issues at Rockaway’s shelter beyond the assault arrest, but as concerns grow, local elected officials such as Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato are trying to hold them accountable. Schnupp advises anyone to report issues such as loitering, a lack of social distancing, loud music, etc. to 311, and emergencies to 911, so there is a record that elected officials can refer to. RSNS’ lawsuit against the shelter is still pending. However due to courts currently being closed, it is not known when it will be possible to get a ruling.

Floyd Bennett Field Closed
Floyd Bennett Field has been closed to the public as it will now operate as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;makeshift bus storage facility,â&#x20AC;? according to a report in The City, an independent nonprofit news outlet. While The MTA operates under reduced schedules, the agency has a newfound need to temporarily store buses because their regular depots are full. The MTA said it will vacate the park when the City buses return to regular service schedule.
This part of Gateway National Park had been attracting a lot of visitors seeking open, outdoor areas during the coronavirus crisis. Bicyclists, walkers, birdwatchers, kayakers, gardeners and others will have to seek other options for the time being. Gateway National said in a statement that â&#x20AC;&#x153;Only those on official business will be permitted to enter. We will notify the public when we resume full operations and provide update on our website www.nps.gov/ gate and social media channels @GatewayNPS. Dear Rockaways, We are now into the second month of COVID-19, and I hope you are continuing to practice safe social distancing, checking on family, friends and neighbors. Since my last writeup, we have been working extremely hard to assist the Rockawaysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; local businesses that remain open, as well as those that have temporarily closed, with the hope of re-opening. We now are collectively working with our partner organizations, Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) and Rockaway East Merchants Association (REMA4US) to electronically distribute information to business owners, community-based organizations and faith institutions as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, our suspicions were correct â&#x20AC;&#x201C; larger entities with capacity and the ability to complete and submit applications, were first in line
to receive grants and forgivable loans more rapidly than our smaller businesses. So, now like many businesses, we are re-tooling our services to assist local businesses to complete their applications. Words of Caution: applications are considered complete only if they comply with requested supporting documentation such as Business or Employer Identification Number; SIC Code(s); Tax Exemption Information; Business Incorporation Documents; Tax Returns; 990 Form; CHAR 500 Form; 941 Quarterly Reports; Annual Audit; and Financial Statements (balance sheet and profit & loss). COVID-19 is preventing organizations like RDRC, RBA, and REMA4US from coming to you. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have an email address (preferably a business email address) or social media presence, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start by helping you obtain a business email address (also a basic requirement on many applications).
All it takes is an email to ehelpdesk@rdrc.org and if we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t assist, we have host partners ready to help. As with every disaster, there are silver linings that give us hope that better days are ahead. Even as our retail, goods and services businesses, restaurants, food places, community-based organizations, and faith institutions struggle to remain open, I am amazed at their collective generosity to others. This past week Robert and Metta Kaskel, owners of Thai Rock Restaurant, contacted me to lend a hand with transporting meals to health care workers at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Episcopal Hospital. Without hesitation, we agreed to handle the transportation and this past Tuesday, we delivered 75 meals to very appreciative hospital workers! As a result of their good will, Robert and Metta are now receiving additional donations to continue providing meals to health care
workers throughout the Rockaways! Also, kudos to our Rockaway food pantries helping our neighbors in need â&#x20AC;&#x201C; offloading deliveries, separating, packaging and distributing bags, while maintaining social distancing! Milk products from cows and other non-human mammals are major components of traditional Western diets, especially in colder climates. The recommended intake of milk or equivalent portions of cheese, yogurt, or other dairy products here in the U.S. is three 8-oz (237 ml) servings per day for adults and children nine years of age and older, an amount that is substantially higher than the current average intake among adults of 1.6 servings per day. The recommended intake amount has been justified to meet nutritional requirements for calcium and reduce the risk of bone fractures. However, the health benefit of high intake of milk products has not been established, and concerns exist about the risks of possible adverse health outcomes. Because the natural func-

tion of milk is to nourish and promote the growth of young mammals, it contains all the necessary nutrients and anabolic hormones. To increase milk productions, cows are bred to produce higher levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), and they are pregnant most of the time they are milked, which greatly increases the levels of progestins, estrogens, and other hormones in milk. If breast milk is unavailable, cow’s milk (as the basis for infant formula for children younger than one year of age) can add important nutritional value during early childhood. Also, since it contains IGF-I and other natural hormones and amino acids, cow’s milk stimulates the growth of children. Tall stature is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, but with higher risks of cancers, hip fractures, and pulmonary emboli (blood clots).
A central rationale for high lifelong milk consumption has been to meet calcium requirements for bone health. However, an unexplained paradox exists, namely that those with the highest intakes of milk and calcium also have the highest rates of hip fractures. Traditional thinking has long been that high milk and dairy consumption promotes bone health and prevents hip fractures, but recent studies have found just the opposite. For example, a recent study of adolescents found that there was a linear relationship between milk consumption and hip fractures later in life, with every glass consumed per day increasing the fracture risk by 9%. Milk has also been promoted as a means to weight control and obesity prevention, however studies have not found any link between them. In fact, it has been shown that consumption of low-fat milk products actual-
ly leads to greater long-term weight gain as compared to full-fat products. In a recent comprehensive review published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the authors concluded that the recommendation to consume three or more servings of dairy foods per day is not justified. The authors concluded that guidelines for daily milk and dairy consumption should be reduced to 0-2 servings per day as calcium and vitamin D can be obtained from other foods such as kale, broccoli, tofu, nuts, beans, and orange juice. They also recommended that use of reduced-fat milk as opposed to full-fat milk should be de-emphasized, and consumption of sugar-sweetened dairy foods should be discouraged as they may lead to high rates of overweight and obesity. Lifelong Friendships JOHN ROBERTS AND DANIEL “DEE” MCCLEAN help with Robert’s AmpSurf (Association of Amputee Surfers) Program in Rockaway and Breezy Point. The two surfers continue doing what they love, while now teaching Veterans, Special Needs Athletes, as well as Persons with Disabilities Adaptive Surfing. Roberts said, “Dee has been helping me for a decade. He is my go-to guy as a volunteer instructor...Dee is a true ‘Waterman.’” While much of Roberts and

For two local dudes, it’s been more than six decades of good vibrations. “I need to know a person for at least 20 years before calling you a friend,” John Roberts said. And at the age of 72, Roberts says he is lucky to have a handful of friends, but his friendship with Daniel “Dee” McClean is like none other, lasting more than 62 years and counting. Roberts and McClean met in the 5th grade at St. Francis de Sales at the age of 10, and have been friends ever since. When it came time for high school, Roberts attended St. John’s Prep, and McClean attended Far Rockaway High School. Despite attending different high schools, their friendship grew due to their shared interest in sports, especially surfing. At age 14, the boys began surfing on longboards, making them the second wave of surfers to come out of Rockaway in 1964. “Dee was the best surfer on the peninsula back in the day. He had the classic California style where he would hang ten or five while riding across the waves on the beaches of Rockaway and California,” Roberts said when reflecting on their early surfing days. The boys lived a few blocks away from each other in Belle Harbor, and would meet up for a surf session in the morning, and then go back to McClean’s house where his mother would make them a lumberjack breakfast. As their friendship grew stronger, they suddenly became a part of one another’s families. “John is a great guy from a great family. No words are more true. His parents were absolutely fabulous. His mom lived into her 90s, with a speed ticket to Heaven,” McClean said. After the boys graduated from high school, they went their separate ways physically, but their friendship was never put on halt. McClean joined the

NYPD, and eventually was promoted to Detective First Class. Roberts attended Niagara University, and then the University of Maryland for a master’s degree in Sports Psychology, earning him his new nickname from McClean, “Dr. J.” Although Roberts was away from Rockaway for nine years, the two continued to keep in touch. While Roberts was finishing his master’s thesis, McClean sent him a postcard from Dee from Why Beach in Sydney, Australia, signing it, “Big Dee

from Down Under.” McClean’s surfing adventure inspired Roberts to save up for a surf trip to Australia in 1973-1974.
“We were among the very first of the Rockaway surfers to travel and surf in Australia in our winter, their summer. It was the ‘Endless Summer,’” Roberts recalled. As Roberts prepared for the surfing trip, McClean gave him a Zodiac Sea Wolf water watch, and his backpack for Roberts’ travels. “I still have that postcard, and I still have his navy duffle bag which I kept my surf gear in during my 55-year surfing career,” Roberts said. When Roberts and McClean settled down with families of their own, both remained in Rockaway to raise their children. Today, Roberts still lives in Rockaway all year round, exclaiming, “I don’t mind Rockaway winters, because it is a grand place!” McClean spends the winter months in Florida with his wife, Margie, and returns to the peninsula for a Rockaway “Endless Summer.” While McClean’s in Florida, he stays in touch with a weekly phone call to Roberts. And when McClean finally returns home every summer, the two pick up right where they left off, enjoying all the local spots Rockaway has to offer, like the Harbor Light, Bungalow Bar, and The Wharf. But, of course the two can never keep themselves away from the surf. McClean volunteers much of his time to

McClean’s friendship revolves around the water and the world of surfing, their friendship means much more than that. The two have truly been through it all together. “You know who your true friends are when you are injured or ill,” Roberts said. A few years ago, Roberts developed Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia, causing him to have Common Variable Immune Deficiency. This led to multiple hospitalizations for Roberts. But, he was never alone, as McClean was always there to check up on him. “Dee would call and visit me in the hospital. When I got home, he would make sure I was OK.” No matter the circumstance, one thing will always remain - the friendship between John Roberts and Daniel “Dee” McClean. When describing his lifelong friendship with McClean, Roberts said, “We have been blessed to like, respect, and be friends for 60+ years and counting.”

It's A Celebration Since the pandemic started, the birthday parade has been a big hit for many people. I went to my first one on April 2 for my friend Tara Karalis’ birthday and it was so much fun. My friend, Lynn Duffy and her family, have truly gotten into the birthday parade spirit. Each time there is a birthday, Lynn sends out a text and organizes a meeting spot. The Duffy family then dresses up in different costumes for each birthday. My husband, who just had a birthday on April 16, was also treated
to a birthday parade. My brother-in-law Timmy’s response was: “What? He’s 48? He needs a parade?” Well, I did not know how much John was going to enjoy the parade. He was cheesing! And the Duffy family dressed as Christmas characters for his special day. Dad Brian drove the truck while Lynn and the children played birthday music on a giant speaker. Lynn was a fabulous Santa and Ty was a Christmas tree who stood with his arms out the entire time!

Uncharted Waters How are you all feeling in this time of uncharted waters? Hopefully, you are not drowning but rather staying afloat, knowing we are all here for you. We are all aware of how necessary it is to social distance and follow the CDC guidelines to be safe and provide safety for others. Now more than ever, we need to pay attention and be respectful of the rules that help to minimize sickness. My intention in this column is to help you find the reset button in your life in some way or form to help you endure this quarantine. Now is the time to
be comfortable being uncomfortable. Being human allows us to feel a wave of emotions each morning upon waking up. Some are getting up to go to work to care for our basic needs, others are saving lives every day. Many are able to sleep later and start a new routine. Hopefully, one that better serves you. Many have lost love ones in this pandemic. My deepest condolences. I wish you healing and peace while you grieve. Solitude, community, loneliness are three words that describe this time in our lives. What are you feeling during this phase of

shelter in? With solitude, one can reflect and begin to make positive changes to live a more meaningful life. If you have never been in solitude away from social activities, this can be a nurturing time for you. Perhaps you are a reader, meditator, spiritual, listener, talker, or media person. Are you spending time that promotes self-care? Perhaps you feel lonely and that is totally normal. How can you reach out to someone who can help you? Do you have family or friends that could lend a listening ear for a few moments? This is the time to be in the community, to support and help one another get through our collective suffering. Now more than ever, we need to have empathy and compassion for one another. Today is a beautiful rainy, peaceful day. I know I am blessed to live in a home with love and security. This is a time when we will see and feel how the earth breathes and supports us. Choosing to be positive, I light Palo Santo incense every day in my home to clear the energy. I surround
myself in crystals, candles and photos of my family, present and past. I create a beautiful sanctuary to practice my yoga with my community, this resets me every day. I feel safe, protected and loved. We meditate with a breath practice to help settle us into our seat. Close your eyes, listen to the sound of your breath. Zoom in your focus to the sound of your breath. Call in a personal intention. Today, I am praying for a sick friend. I set an intention for grounding, clarity, calm and courage. Visualize a diamond shape light coming in from above your head. This diamond light pours down your entire physical body; it is healing and light in weight, it clears disruptive energy, allowing the light to dissolve and rain down upon you. It begins to ground down into the earth, dropping the cord of light into the earth. Breathe into your energy, surrounding yourself with this beautiful golden light. May you be happy, may you be safe, may you be healthy, and may all beings everywhere live with ease.

Thomas O’Callaghan to Release Thrilling New Read

A woman finds herself inside of a grave. She looks up and screams to anyone for help, but no one is going to help her. She’s about to buried and the reality sets in—”No One Will Hear Your Screams.” That thought serves as the title, and that scene, is the opening chapter of Belle Harbor resident Thomas O’Callaghan’s latest thriller, set to be released on May 19. In 2006, O’Callaghan became a published author with his debut novel, “Bone Thief.” The book gave a peek into the dark, creative talent of the friendly, churchgoing author, as he thrilled readers with a story of murder and mayhem and the NYPD’s top fictional cop, Homicide Commander Lieutenant John Driscoll, as he tries to make sense of it all and serve justice. O’Callaghan continued to thrill with the sequel, “The Screaming Room,” in 2007. The books reached international markets and left readers screaming for more. As life took hold and obstacles became distractions, O’Callaghan put down the pen for a while, but O’Callaghan’s previous books about death have been given new life and a new sequel is about to hit the market, just as lives around the world have been put on pause due to coronavirus impacts, and more people are turning to books to escape reality. O’Callaghan started working on the third book of his Driscoll series shortly after he finished “The Screaming Room,” but life's disruptions led to delays. A while after Hurricane Sandy took place, O'Callaghan found new inspiration, and used the
storm as a major theme in his book. However, after so many years since the storm, publishers advised him that as much as Sandy would have a lasting impact on those in Rockaway, a book about the storm would not be marketable nationally. O’Callaghan got back to work, scrapping most of the hurricane theme and even removing some characters connected to it. In the finished product, locals may pick up on some brief references mentioned in Lt. Driscoll’s dreams, such as a fire claiming homes during a storm, and other more obvious local mentions of Driscoll’s old hometown of Breezy Point and a dinner at a familiar restaurant—Kennedy’s, taking place at a table with a prime view of the bay and the New York City skyline. The reference is based on the view from a real table at the restaurant—Table 7—which happens to have a plaque on it dedicated to O’Callaghan by his friend and Kennedy’s co-owner, Gerard Casey. The local references bring light to a twisted story of a sociopathic killer, Tilden, who has a dark history of sexual abuse as a child, and who uses embalming—as one method of murder. Another method mentioned? Crucifixion—of a nun. Or is she? At a Mass at St. Francis de Sales, after O’Callaghan finished the readings as church lector, the humorous Father Jim Cunningham called him out. “After the reading, he steps out into the church and says, 'I don’t know if anybody is aware, but our lector is an author. He’s got two books,’ and he turns to my wife, Eileen, who says, “Bone Thief, and ‘Screaming Room,’ and he’s working on a third one—'No One Will Hear Your Screams’—where he’s killing nuns,’’ O’Callaghan said, recalling Fr. Jim’s jestful accusations. O’Callaghan says there is a caveat. His writing coach, Stephen Ohayon, PhD, introduced the concept, but as his own wife almost became a nun, O’Callaghan says the idea of murdering one in his book, would have put him in an early grave. The crucified nun of his latest book
is more like one of those who gave kids literal and figurative nightmares in old Catholic school days, and who was eventually excommunicated for her torturous acts— making her, technically, no longer a nun. Readers can decide for themselves when they read “No One Will Hear Your Screams” when it is released by WildBlue Press on May 19. The publisher is different from O’Callaghan’s original publisher of his first two books. The new publisher gave him a deal that would not only publish his new book, but bring new life to his entire Lt. Driscoll series. WildBlue Press has revamped and republished “Bone Thief,” which was re-released on April 28. “Screaming Room” will be re-released on May 5, and this all leads up to the much-anticipated release of O’Callaghan’s newest book. All three books will be available on Amazon as paperbacks and e-books, and potentially audible books and hardcovers, making them accessible to all looking for a good quarantine read. For O’Callaghan, the timing worked out well. He signed a contract with WildBlue Press in January and expected a nine to 12 month wait for his books to be published, but the publisher insisted on a May release. The extra time spent at home has also given him the opportunity to focus on his writing. “I’ve been working even harder now,” O’Callaghan said. “It’s the perfect time for me to be busy and working.” O’Callaghan has been so busy writing, that he’s nearing completion of his fourth book, one that he feels particularly excited about and has aspirations of it making it straight to the big screen before print. This book
steps away from the world of Lt. Driscoll and introduces completely new characters in a story that goes far beyond murder and mayhem with a unique twist. And, it takes place in Rockaway. “It’s exciting to write this fourth book. There’s that adage that says to 'write what you know.' It’s exciting to set it in Rockaway,” he said. The new book makes direct references to local streets and restaurants that will have local readers feeling like they’re part of the story. And O’Callaghan isn’t stopping writing anytime soon. “I already have a fifth book in mind,” he said. O’Callaghan’s books can be found on Amazon.com. Swamped! So, last week I wrote about how I was swamped and Kevin Boyle told me I was the first person to tell him about being swamped in quarantine. Well Kevin, many people texted me and or commented on my column last week about being swamped. Here are some ways we are swamped: Online Learning: Many people think schools are closed. School buildings are closed but schools are up and running. I did not have Google Classroom until the
week of March 16. I have been swamped trying to learn this as well as Castle Learning, ScreenCastify, QuickTime player and many other online applications. Then I go to sign up for these accounts and I am told “That email already exists in our system” and it takes me a significant amount of time trying to remember my username and password. I also teach high school, which means I teach five classes with about 30 students in each class. I do not even have children to homeschool. Many parents who

are teachers texted me to say they are swamped as well due to trying to keep their children on task as well as their classes. Someone who I respect deeply, Father Jomar, said it is “one of the most common misconceptions” that online learning is easier. It is difficult. And it is not just difficult for teachers, it is difficult for anyone working from home with children trying to keep their children on task and attending to their own responsibilities. Meals: I feel planning meals is difficult and, again, I have no small children at home. Some friends have told me that their children want three course meals for breakfast and lunch and they are being picky. The best meme I have seen is about using your school stomach while online learning. I also have to go to a few different stores to get my ingredients for cooking. I also have to shop for a few picky people myself. I call shopping for my dad a “scavenger hunt.” P.S.: A huge thank you to all the stores and
restaurants that are open and working so hard to assist us in getting what we need. Birthday parades: Probably the best thing to come out of this pandemic are birthday parades. The parades are pretty quick, but the preparations are time consuming. I have to go to Beach 129th Street to Lennie’s and get balloons. I have to make a sign and, of course, shower that day and get dressed up! Summer Duffy’s parade upped the game with a theme and her “Wiggin’ Out” parade was super fun! I also was almost late to the 3 o’clock parade because the day got away from me! Now I have heard we may do graduation parades. Sign me up: email me or text me the details and I will be there! Cleaning: I have become a bit of a germaphobe since this began. Each morning I clean all of the door knobs, faucets, and anything else this virus can live on. I even clean the steering wheel and handles of the car doors both inside and out each day. This is a lot!
