Construction Ahead on Beach Channel Drive Work on Beach Channel Drive, between Beach 116th and Beach 124th Street, is set to begin. Some may have noticed the trees on the median between Beach 116th and Beach 114th being corralled last week. This was the start of a water-main reconstruction project along Beach Channel Drive. This project, managed by the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC), will include the replacement of distribution water mains, replacement of storm and sanitary sewers, and installation of new curbs and sidewalks. The water main work is expected to begin this month, so don’t be alarmed if you see a lot of construction taking place along the road. The construction times for this project will be 7 a.m. through 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drivers will face some disruptions as at least one lane of Beach Channel Drive will be closed at cer-

tain times. Homeowners near the project area may also be impacted as there will be limited street access on certain blocks. Street closures may be required, but warning signs will be posted in advance. Driveway access may be temporarily interrupted due to construction. Sign, advisories, and temporary construction barriers will be provided to guide traffic, pedestrians and promote safety. Bus stops and/or bus routes may be relocated and/ or detoured during construc-

tion. Signs and directions will be posted noting the changes in advance. Emergency vehicle and pedestrian access to homes will be maintained at all times. There will also be some water service disruptions during construction time. To allow for water main replacement, the existing water service must be shut off by closing the valves at either end of the section. Notice will be given for all planned interruptions. Water service will be restored at the

end of each workday. The DDC has assigned a Community Construction Liaison for this project if anyone has any questions or concerns. Individuals with special needs, that may be impacted by this project, are advised to contact Toussaint as soon as possible, to make the DDC aware of your situation. DDC will work with you to minimize the inconvenience as much as possible. In the event that any property is damaged during construction, contact Toussaint, who will notify the contractor on your behalf. If the contractor fails to respond within 10 days, you should inform the DDC Borough Director in writing of the damage. If you wish to file a claim, you must do so with the NYC Comptroller’s Office within 90 days of the incident.

Participatory Budget Voting Set To Begin for Far Rock By Katie McFadden

It’s that time of the year again. Participatory Budgeting (PB) is here and now’s your chance to vote on how at least $1M will be spent in your council district. This year, only Councilman Donovan Richards’ District 31 is participating and voting begins at various locations on April 9. Although Councilman Eric Ulrich of District 32 was one of the first to bring Participatory Budgeting to constituents, Ulrich is not participating in the program this year. The Rockaway Times reached out to Ulrich for a reason, but did not receive a response by press time. However, in Councilman Richards’ District 31, PB is in full swing and voting is ready to begin across Arverne and Far Rockaway. District 31 accounts for a large area that includes places like Brookville, Laurelton, Rosedale and Springfield

Gardens, so some items on the ballot benefit those areas, but there are also several ballot items that would impact the rest of the district, including Arverne, Edgemere and Far Rockaway. Among the ballot items and budgets for the local area are: Street planting in Far Rockaway along Seagirt Boulvard, $150,000; Creation of a new picnic grove and BBQ area in O’Donohue Park near Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 16th Street, $320,000; Technology upgrades at Goldie Maple Academy, including WiFi upgrades, 50 Mac laptops, six LCD projectors, 18 mounted smart boards and three scanner systems, $200,000; Smart Board upgrades for the schools at 10-45 Nameoke Street, $150,000; Lenovo laptops and laptop carts for learning at P.S. 104, $150,000; Goldie Maple Academy Library Upgrades, $450,000; Library Tech Upgrade

Baby Talk I spend my life wishing I’d said that. Somebody says something funny and I don’t have time to laugh —I’m too busy turning green with envy. I don’t wish I had invented the walkie-talkie but I do wish I were the person who wondered aloud: what if the person who named the walkie-talkie named other things, like stamps. A stamp would be called licky-sticky. Licky-sticky! Ingenious. And ridiculous sounding. But on the scale of the absurd, I’d say no worse than walkie-talkie —a name we all say with a straight face.

There’s a matter of debate on who invented the whole two-way radio system. Some guy in the late 1930s developed the prototype but the company, Motorola, claims they had the first walkie-talkie. Motorola first called the thing a Handie-Talkie. What the hell? What’s with the talkie thing? I guess some dad or uncle must’ve been in charge of marketing and was spending his off days trying to communicate with a baby. Here’s your blankie, now please go to sleepy. Please don’t do poopy. Have a little sippie.

I mean, some genius engineer who figures out how to use radio waves hands over his invention and some guy in marketing calls it a Handie-Talkie. And some other clever guy who’s been home with an infant, says rhyming is better. You know, like one, two, buckle my shoe. This thing will be huge at Christmas so we have to appeal to kids. You can walk with this two-radio and you can talk. Hmmm…. someone says, walk-talk sounds too much like Chinese take-out. Talkie is catchy. But handie, not so much. Let’s drop handie and rhyme! Babies love rhymes. It might be dorky but let’s go with walkie-talkie! I imagine the inventor buried his face in his hands and spent his life denying he had anything to do with naming the damn thing. Sure, I wish I was the guy who invented the light bulb or the Snuggie but I can’t hammer a nail without an ambulance standing by, let alone invent something. But dammit, I should be able to blurt out something fun like: what if the person who named the walkie-talkie named other

things? Someone named Antonia Nicole asked the question and offered a few of her own including the licky-sticky. She said a fork would be a stabby-grabby and a defibrillator would be a hearty-starty. A pregnancy test would be a Maybe-Baby and a nightmare would be a screamie-dreamie. She posted this online and the internet ran with it. Pajamas were called ready-beddy and a firefighter would have been called a flamie-tamie. I wonder if the Rockaway dream (lifeguard then firefighter) would be so appealing if it was lifeguard then flamietamie. A lifejacket could easily have been boatie-floatie. And a thong would be a peekie-cheekie. If the walkie-talkie guy was in charge of birds, someone said, a parrot would have been a wordybirdy. And halitosis would have been called deathy-breathy. They are all ridiculous! But 104, roger that, and copy — 100 percent no worse than walkie-talkie. Man, I need a beer or a fizzydizzy.

Design. The award “recognizes the redesign and reconstruction of the iconic tourist attraction into a more resilient structure.” One feature the APA highlighted was “Blue concrete planks with glow-in-the-dark speckles that spell out ‘Rockaway’ on the boardwalk, visible to air travelers passing overhead, day or night.” We don’t know if it glows in the dark or it can be fully seen by air travelers but we know Kevin Boyle of The Rockaway Times gave designers the idea! (No matter what Joe Hartigan says). ***** Taxpayer money at work: The Second Avenue Subway cost about eight times as much as recent subway extensions in Berlin and Paris. More tax dollars at work: We asked the MTA for an update on the Rockaway Beach Branch Reactivation Study and a spokesperson responded: “We’re working on it. Let’s make a note to keep in touch on it.” Ok, noted. And still more tax dollars at work: We sent a Freedom of Informa-

Page 7 tion Request to the New York Economic Development Corporation regarding emails between the developer (Uri Kaufman and the EDC) regarding the courthouse at 90-01 Beach Channel Drive. We sent it in August. We have received SEVEN emails over the past few months telling us they are “continuing to search.” ***** Real estate news. Several lots between Beach 90th and Beach 91st Street, including some on Shore Front Parkway are being sold as one project hoping to attract developers. The almost 15,000 square foot property deal seeks $5.5 million. The same outfit, One Commercial Realty Services, is also marketing 87-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard for $1,850,000. ***** Riis Park Pitch-N-Putt had a shaky start last year as it was closed in the spring while Gateway negotiated a lease with one particular operator. There will be no such disruption this year as Aviator Sports is now operating the course.

Dear Editor: It was great news to hear the theater on Beach 116th Street is in contract to be sold. I wish it could have been revived as some kind of art or entertainment center but since it continued to fall into a state of beyond repair, I knew restoring it was a lost cause. If the purchase price was $6 million dollars I don’t think the buyer will put up anything shabby or run some halfway house. There are a lot of other places they could do that without spending the six million, plus the cost of tearing the thing down. I am hoping something good goes up and not just condos. People buying the condos are going to want places to shop and eat. I hope whoever comes in there builds good commercial space and brings 116th Street all the way back. I don’t remember the good old days but I heard they hap-

Save The Waves Dear Editor: It’s great news that the Army Corps of Engineers is going to start putting in groins (jetties) sooner than expected but is it great? Has the Army Corps studied how waves will be affected? It’s no small thing. Rockaway has really come a long way in recent years and one of the biggest, if not the biggest, reason is because of surfing. Surfanomics is the name for how waves make an impact on local economies. Surfers spend money, rent places, and create a positive image of a place. If the beaches have no waves, it won’t be the same. Of course, Rockaway has to have coastal protection, but any plan should evaluate how it will affect a community socially and economically. Sebastian W.

Past, Present and Future of Rockaway’s Own Fifth Avenue By Rosemary McGuire

Sold! (But not yet closed). Last week, The Rockaway Times broke the story of the decrepit, old theater on Beach 116th Street being in contract for sale. We’re told within 60 days it will change hands and although questions loom as to whose hands it’ll be going to and what the plans are for its future, it seems the community at large is breathing a sigh of relief that the neglected building finally has a new lease on life. Some speculate it’ll be demolished and replaced by luxury housing or retail stores; others hope to see renovations restoring it to its former 1900s grandeur. Rockaway resident Noreen Linares said, “It would be nice to have an entertainment venue for live music and entertainment in its place.” Or “maybe an upscale hotel with

retail stores,” Lauren Urban, another Rockaway resident said. Whatever the plan, the purchase seems to points to a commitment to revitalize that long-forgotten part of the street. “I’ll be happy to see it gone,” Urban said. “It’s a great

location and maybe this means Beach 116th Street is on the rebound. Regardless, it’s a step in the right direction.” For years as Claudette Flatow, owner of Cuisine by Claudette and her team worked hard to build her specialty store, as the

crumbling, abandoned theater sat defiantly directly across the street. Yarden Flatow, Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) board chair and employee at Cuisine by Claudette said, “The bottom line is this: every piece of unused property on Beach 116th Street that becomes utilized is a benefit to the whole community.” Looking at the stretch of shuttered stores and emptiness adjacent to the beach, it’s hard to imagine the 1900s when throngs of people flocked to Beach 116th Street, lured to the peninsula for its glitz and glamour. According to local historian and Rockaway native James Supple, when Lubin's Theater made its debut in the early 1920s, the Rockaway peninsula was attracting thousands of visitors. Arriving by trains, automobiles, ferries and trolleys, guests filled the rooms at Nigey’s 5th Avenue hotel on Beach 116th Street, a beautiful cedar wood hotel, that according to Supple, stood where the old Beach Club used to be. “Beach 116th Street was called Fifth Avenue back then,” Supple said. “Posh,” is how he describes it. “Fifth Avenue mimicked the fashionable Fifth Avenue in NYC and was just as ritzy, too.” Supple says the theater made its debut on the scene as Lubin’s Silent Motion Picture Theater. Wrapping up a day at the beach usually meant strolling across the street to Lubin’s open-air

THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2018 theater and watching a movie, as the cool evening breezes from the ocean swept through the space. The theater changed hands several times over the years before finally going dark due to declining attendance. Lubin’s became the Park Theater, then finally Belle Harbor Twin Movie Theater. In the years to follow, the space took on various lives as a roller rink, restaurant, beer distributer, and entertainment center, which Supple recalls as hosting male revues and mud wrestling events, until its ultimate closure in the 1990s. It’s since languished, uninhabited, crumbling and sorely neglected on Michael Konig’s watch who bought the building in 1988. But that’s about to change and local business owners in the area are thrilled. Elizabeth Hanna, of Mazzone’s Hardware sums up what many shop owners on the block are feeling. “It is super exciting and a game changer for 116th Street,” she said.

Groundbreaking Changes for Addabbo Center The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center is getting bigger. The Knights are turning 90 this month. Msgr. William F. Burke Rockaway Council #2672 Knights of Columbus will celebrate its 90th anniversary serving the Rockaway community on Saturday, April 14. Mass will be celebrated by the Council's chaplain, Father James Devine at 5 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima. After Mass, the members, Columbiettes and guests will march back to the Council for a gala dinner and entertainment. Through the efforts of Rev. Joseph Curran of St. Camillus Church, the council was originally chartered on April 10, 1928 as Saint Camillus Council. In 1955, the name was changed to Rockaway Council to encompass all the churches on the peninsula. On May 5, 1992, in honor of Msgr. Burke who had served as the council’s chaplain for 57 years, the council was renamed Msgr. William F. Burke-Rockaway Council. In 1933, the ladies’ auxiliary, known as the Columbiettes was organized. Throughout the years, they have worked side by side with the Knights and continue to do so today. They remain an integral part of the organization. The Council has had many homes over the years, starting in 1928 at the Quonset Hut on Beach 113th Street and the boardwalk, various church facilities and other organizations' venues. In 1958, the members broke ground at the present location, (333 Beach 90th Street,) and through the

combined efforts of many members, who did the work: carpentry to plumbing to masonry, the building was completed and subsequently dedicated on October 25, 1958. From the day of its founding in 1928, Rockaway Council Knights of Columbus remains one of the most active councils in New York State. Their 750 members continue to support the local churches, seminarians, youth activities and special Olympians. In recognition and appreciation to our veterans, the council has established a firm and mutually rewarding partnership and home, to the Daniel M. O’Connell Post 272 American Legion. They provide support to our police department and the 100th Precinct Community Council. Prior to and after Superstorm Sandy, the council has opened its doors and hearts to all organizations, and civic groups for meetings and other special events. The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic Fraternal Organization with 1,918,122 members located throughout the world. Founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, CT in 1882 to serve as a mutual benefit society to working class immigrants, it has developed into a fraternal benefit society dedicated to charitable causes. The virtues of the order are Charity, Unity and Fraternity, which the Knights practice in all that they do. Congratulations on 90 years and here’s to many more!

Rockaway Reels Over Death of a Toddler By Kami-Leigh Agard

Rockaway’s residents have harbored many storms and heartbreaks, but the recent tragic death of three-year old Bella Edwards, has shaken the community once again. Since Bella was discovered and pronounced dead late evening, Monday, April 2, the community has been inundated with media outlets lined up outside the building on 1 Beach 105 Shore Front Rockaway, where Edwards resided on the sixth floor with her mom, Shamikaa Gonzalez, three-month-old little brother, and the alleged perpetrator, 32-year-old stepdad, Marc Jenkins. Not many know exactly what transpired during the reported eight hours Bella was left home alone with Jenkins and her little brother, that ultimately culminated in the little girl being declared dead on Monday, but here are the facts: In a statement, Queens District Attorney Brown said, “Jenkins

was the sole adult in the apartment with Bella and her brother

for about eight hours Monday. At approximately 6 p.m., the de-

fendant called 911, and when emergency responders arrived, the little girl was unconscious and unresponsive. She was rushed to a nearby hospital (St. John’s in Far Rockaway), where she was pronounced dead. Preliminary results of the autopsy showed little Bella died as a result of blunt force trauma to her abdomen with other medical studies pending.� According to the NYPD, investigators are also trying to determine if the little girl was a victim of sexual abuse. kins, was taken to the hospital to be evaluated. He was not injured. After Gonzalez and Jenkins were both questioned at the 100th Precinct, Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown announced the next day on Tuesday, April 3, that “[Jenkins] is presently awaiting arraignment in Queens Criminal Court on a complaint charging him with second-degree depraved murder and first-degree depraved assault. Note that in U.S. law, depraved murder, also known as depraved-indifference murder, is a type of murder where an individual acts with a "depraved indifference" to human life and where such act results in a death, despite that individual not explicitly intending to kill. If convicted, Jenkins faces up to 25 years to life in prison. Jenkins was last seen being escorted from the 107th Precinct in Flushing on Tuesday night. This isn’t Jenkins’ first offense.

THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2018 According to the NYPD, Jenkins, a newcomer to the Rockaway community, “has three prior arrests, two of which are sealed.” One of which was in 2004, when he was convicted of attempted murder in the Bronx, for which it is reported that he was incarcerated for eight years. The RT reached out both to the NYS departments of Corrections and Probation for information on his probation term and record, but as of press time, did not received a response. The other question posed is, were there any reported incidents in the Rockaway Park home? The NYPD said, “Since 2017, there was one prior domestic (911) call to that location involving a dispute between Gonzalez and Jenkins.” In a Facebook post on Monday night, Gonzalez had written, “Bella, I’m so sorry I wasn’t there to protect you. This feels like a bad dream I can’t wake up from. This feels like a bad dream I can’t wake up from. You was loved by everyone and shared so many funny memories. I’m going to miss all the

times you kissed and hugged me everyday. Please watch over me, Logan [Bella’s baby brother] and the family. We all love you so much!” The post has since been removed. On Tuesday night, the NYPD’s presence was strong around the building with officers standing in front the family’s apartment door still decorated from Easter. The building’s residents had also started a budding memorial for Bella with flowers, candles and pictures. Neighbors were shocked to hear the horrific news. As one long-time resident in the building who knew Bella’s mom when she herself was a

Page 15 toddler said, “I’ve lived here for over 20 years and I knew Bella’s mom and grandmom quite well. They seemed like a happy, decent family. We would share small talk in the laundry room, hallway and elevator. All I know is that Bella’s mom had recently moved out from her mother’s and got her own apartment in this same building. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors? The important thing is for us as a community to band together and show our love for Bella. Can you imagine the heartbreak the family is facing? Instead of slamming the family on Facebook and making threats, we need to come out as a community and show our love for Bella, and other little defenseless one like her. Rockaway is a strong community full of compassion. This is one time we really need to come out and show it.” As we went to press, a memorial, announced by Gonzalez, was scheduled to be held in front of the building for Bella at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4.

Boro Prez Appoints New CB14 Members On Monday, April 2, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz announced the appointments of 331 people to serve two-year terms on Community Boards across the borough. Of the 331 appointees, 62 are serving on the Community Board for the first time. For Rockaway’s Community Board 14, one of those first-timers is 20-year-old Tamera Jacobs, making her one of the youngest board members on CB14. Jacobs is a Far Rockaway resident who also serves as Director of Operations and Programs for the Rockaway Youth Task Force. “I am incredibly proud to announce that I have been appointed to serve as a board member of Queens Community Board 14,� Jacobs said in a Facebook post. “Community Boards play a vital role in local government, dealing with issues from zoning, public safety, and transportation to parks and education. I look forward to representing our community to the best of my abilities.�

The Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) developed out of the Beach 116th Street Partnership, which was formed to help support businesses on Beach 116th in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. While the RBA now supports businesses across six miles of the peninsula, from Riis Park to Edgemere, we understand that each business corridor within this district has specific needs. On Tuesday, March 27, the Rockaway Business Alliance hosted a meeting of Beach 116th businesses at the Queens Library Seaside Branch, with the purpose of gathering feedback on the area’s specific concerns. In attendance were RBA Executive Director James Ellis, RBA Board Chair Yarden Flatow (Cuisine by Claudette,) RBA treasurer Michael Gliner (Pip Printing), RBA secretary Galit Tsadik (Tsadik G Accounting), as well as board members: Jim Otton (Fat Cardinal Provisions), Mara Valentino (Uncle Louie G’s), and John Cori (Rockaway Beach Civic). Businesses on Beach 116th represented included Carvel, Hot Yoga Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Surf Shop, Last Stop Gourmet Deli, Polo Euro Market, Mazzone Hardware, Tsadik G Management, and Cuisine by Claudette. The conversation began with an introduction of the RBA from Flatow and Ellis, and a brief description of what the organization has accomplished this year, and what we’re aiming for in the year to come. The RBA then asked the Beach 116th Street business owners to present what their biggest issues are in the corridor. The first response from many of them was safety, with a gesture toward Carvel’s Paul Guarneri, whose

The Rockaway Times ice cream store was robbed at gunpoint a few weeks back. Potential solutions proposed included a conversation with the 100th Precinct about facilitating a greater police presence on the block. Although cameras pointing out to the street were proposed, it was pointed out that this was only helpful in catching the suspects after they had already committed crimes. Another major issue brought up was sanitation issues. Business owners nodded in agreement to descriptions of overflowing trashcans and garbage in the street. Many of them

pointed to issues of homelessness and vagrancy as amplifying the problem. The RBA recently submitted an application to Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office for discretionary funding, specifically to support sanitation initiatives in the corridor. As the weather gets nicer, we will produce corridor clean-ups with increased regularity, and will certainly circle back to Beach 116th Street before the end of the year. (The RBA produced a clean-up on Beach 116th Street this past December, to prepare for the tree lighting). Our next corridor clean-up will take place on Saturday, April 14. Poppycock Proposals Our City Council has been hard at work poking its nose into the personal affairs of New Yorkers with introductions of several inane, "nanny state"-inspired bills. First up is a bill introduced by Council member Raphael L. Espinal, Jr., (Int 0726-2018) which makes it unlawful for private employees in the City of New York to require employees to check and respond to email and other electronic communications during non-work hours. Apparently, Councilmember Espinal was so impressed with a recent French law establishing workers’ “right to disconnect,” requiring companies with more than 50 employees to establish hours when staff should not send or answer emails, he felt it necessary to be the first to introduce a "right to disconnect" law here in New York City. What Councilmember Espinal is overlooking is that most successful private business organizations are meritocracies where employees have the opportunity to be recognized and advanced in proportion to their abilities and accomplishments. These self-motivated workers do not require the government to intercede to legislate the appropriate frequency of in-

I mean if we no longer have to check or respond to after-work business-related electronic inquiries, just think how much more free time we would have to assuage our egos with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat? And as for me, I could finally start ignoring that Nigerian Prince who keeps emailing me on the weekend asking for my bank account number to hide a half million dollars! By the way, Councilmember Espinal was also responsible for the legislation, which earlier this year saw the creation of a New York City Office Of Nightlife and Mayor. Mayor de Blasio's appointed Ariel Palitz, a lifelong New Yorker and nightlife professional, as New York City’s first ever senior executive director of the Office of Nightlife. Somehow I just can't picture Bill de Blasio and the NYC government's new Office of Nightlife being the harbinger of a return to the raucous evening festivities of the ‘70s and ‘80s with the likes of such establishments as Steve Rubell's Studio 54 over on the west side of Manhattan with its all-powerful doorman Marc Benecke or Elaine Kaufmann's upper east side bar and restaurant, Elaine's. And yes, I frequented both establishments on several occasions. In fact, I was thrown out of Studio 54 on two separate occasions for looking too much like a cop! Of course, the famous Copacabana is still operating over in Times Square, but is only a shadow of its former self from back when I spent several evenings at its original location on East 60th Street, enjoying the likes of the Fifth Dimension with Marilyn McCoo during the disco era. Ya gotta love Joey Gallo who really knew how to run a nightclub back then. It was all downhill after Joey's dinner was rudely interrupted by some disgruntled mob associates at Umberto's Clam House in Little Italy back in 1972. Another piece of legislation

working its way through our City Council is brought to you by Council member Peter A. Koo, et al., (Intro #0734-2018) making it illegal for individuals to smoke (cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and vaporizers) while walking on sidewalks under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation and several locations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Parks and Recreation. Under the bill, smokers would still be free to light up on public streets, as long as they remained stationary while doing so. Are you kidding me? Due diligence requires that I advise all of you that I am a bit of a heavy smoker — I go through two lighters a day. That being said, I also believe that this bill, which will turn our police officers into the smoking police, is ludicrous and epitomizes a piece of political legislation which shouts out, "Look at what I am doing," while, in fact, doing nothing at all!

A more consistent stance would be to recognize that the government can, and I would actually argue should, ban smoking in public buildings, in public parks, and on public sidewalks; places that exist only because tax dollars pay for them to exist. Other than that, it should leave private business owners to make their own decisions and, in turn, consumers will make theirs. If tax money is being used to fund it, then creating the healthiest atmosphere possible is the state’s prerogative. But when tax money is absent, so then should be the state! Broad Channel - why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Gene Mutation Challenges Genes are made of DNA. Each chromosome contains about 20,000 to 25,000 genes. Every person has two copies of each gene – one copy from each parent. Human genes are nearly identical for all humans with less than one percent being slightly different. These slightly different genes are called alleles and they contribute to each person’s unique physical appearance. Genes contain instructions for making proteins. Each cell requires thousands of proteins to work together in order for that cell to function properly. Genetic mutations cause proteins to malfunction or be missing entirely which causes the cell to malfunction. Sometimes when a

cell malfunctions it can grow and reproduce at a very rapid and uncontrolled rate creating a tumor, better known as cancer. Some genes are tumor suppressor genes. They produce proteins that repair damaged, broken, or mutated DNA, thereby preventing a tumor from forming. Examples of tumor suppressor genes are the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. When mutations occur in these genes, they do not repair damaged DNA and tumors may develop. Mutations in the BRCA1/2 genes are associated with breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and other cancers, and because our genes come from our parents, BRCA mutations are inherited. Not

everyone who inherits a BRCA mutation will develop cancer because other factors such as other genetic factors, environment, and lifestyle contribute to the risk of developing cancer. Risk factors for having a harmful BRCA mutation can be personal or family-related. Personal risk factors include breast cancer at an early age (below 50), history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, cancer in both breasts, breast cancer AND one or more relatives diagnosed with breast cancer below 50, one relative diagnosed with ovarian cancer or two or more relatives diagnosed with breast or pancreatic cancer, and Ashkenazi Jewish heritage with at least one close relative diagnosed with breast, ovarian, or pancreatic cancer. Family risk factors include two or more relatives diagnosed with breast cancer below 50, a male relative with breast cancer, a relative with breast and ovarian cancer or with cancer in both breasts, a relative with ovarian cancer, and a relative with a BRCA1/2 mutation. So far researchers have identified over 1,800 BRCA1 mutations.

The Rockaway Times Because there are so many mutations, BRCA1/2 testing can be problematic. For example, a person with a negative test result and a personal or family history that suggests that he or she might be at risk for a mutation but no close relatives have been identified as having such a mutation, he or she might still have a mutation that was not identified by the test and that mutation has not yet been identified as being harmful. Likewise, a person with an uncertain test result means that that person has a mutation but that mutation has not yet been identified as contributing to cancer risk. As you can see, the interpretation of gene mutation testing can be complicated. For this reason, a consultation with a genetic specialist is usually recommended, especially for those with a negative test result but positive personal or family history. INSPIRATION In order to be inspired, we have to feel things deeply. Get into the layers of our inner selves, deeper than the superficial stuff provided by our living day to day. Focusing on what is right in front of us, taking it all in and feeling stimulated by it. It is not a thinking experience; it is much more a feeling experience that kind of just happens. And when it does, there is that brief glimpse of awareness, recognition and knowing. Getting to that space is just a matter of being open to it. Not closed-in and regimented in

what happens every day, and what needs to be done. Through conscious choice, no matter what is going on, we can open up to allow the coming in of inspiration. The Latin root of the word "inspire" is “spirare,” which means “to breathe.” No surprise to me because when I feel inspired, I feel full and expanded. The miracle of breath fills us and expands us. Inspiration has been attuned to artists to create their art, and can be extended to create something meaningful in any way. You can be inspired to care for

someone, or begin an exercise, or create a new delicious dish for dinner, or put together an arrangement of plants that are pleasing to the eye, or make someone who is down feel uplifted by some kind words. These are words and acts of inspiration that breathe life — energy = life force — to action. Acting on inspiration is the most natural and comfortable of any actions I have experienced. It just feels right. There is a spark—an idea that springs forth from a gut feeling, which is light and positive. Do this. Start that. Help that one. Be there for this. And on. These often come forth from another living entity: human, animal, bird, insect, plant life. So, there is the question, “What inspires me?” And then there is the question, “I am inspired to do what?” You can look at the first butterfly you see in the year and be inspired to create something or do something meaningful for someone. These are the experiences of inspiration we have from day to day life experience and the start to get

Page 27 to the inner layers. We take in a beauty or visual stimulation and translate that vision to one positive action. Beautiful. As we integrate these deeper more thoughtful moments and these inspirational moments, more and more of our day-today lives become more meaningful. Little by little, everything is inspiring and meaningful. During my quest in younger days, I searched for the “meaning of life.” Bought books, read what I could, always asking whoever, esteemed or not, had something to say about it. Never had blind faith, so needed the confirmation, so to speak. Not knowing at the time, that the answer was not out there, it is within me. In my inner self where inspiration lies comfortably, where balance and peace cradle, where spirituality is founded in this one self—one body, one mind, one heart and soul. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

If your song doesn’t have a start, finish, much less any meaning to it, it’s telling me that you are not much of an artist. I call them mumble rappers, and if that’s the standard today, I’m worried about the next generation of rappers. They are dumbing down the music and disrespecting its roots. Anybody could swing a bat, but if you want to be a Yankee, you have to able to show your stripes. The question is what makes you stand out, and that’s what these new artists have to focus on to define themselves and also the future of hip hop for generations to come.” Fury says he wants to teach the youth today that hip hop and rapping is all about learn-

ing how to design and orchestrate a blueprint. “Hip hop’s pioneers laid down the blueprint. They were urban griots, storytellers who used their lyrics as nourishment for the community. Some newcomers I like are Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino and even Cardi B. They are taking their art seriously and offer you that ‘Oh snap moment,’ when you have to rewind the track and listen to the lyrics’ subliminal message hidden within. Learning how to write a rhyme to a beat is a science. There’s math involved with constructing your rhymes, following a one-two or onetwo-three beat, ciphering and even perfecting your performance skills. It’s like being an architect designing a building. These are skills these young cats need to learn so they could evolve into becoming better and more effective hip hop artists,” Fury said. Fury said he is looking to open up an avenue in Rockaway where he can offer such classes to youth. “I want youth

today to see hip hop as an avenue for upliftment. Gang banging, selling drugs, hustling girls does not have to be the way out. There are more positive ways to educate yourself and gain respect on the streets. Music will always be your friend. It has been mine.” When asked where his name “Fury” originated from, he laughed, “My style is kind of ‘furious’ so the name just seemed appropriate. Card to get on. When you get off the tram, you head south past Cornell University, past the crumbling remains of the hospital (which is listed as a landmark) and on toward the Four Freedoms Park. When you get to the very southern tip of the Island, you will have a fantastic view of midtown Manhattan

There is a fun way to get back to Rockaway, too. Simply walk (because surprisingly there are no CitiBikes on the Island) on the east side of the Island up to the Queensboro Bridge, and there you can grab the ferry, which will eventually deposit you at Pier 11. From there, switch ferries to the Rocka-

and Long Island City, Queens. But even more amazing are the waters speeding past the Island on either side. The currents are especially strong here, as the East River rushes from the Long Island Sound and Harlem River toward the ocean. The river is actually an estuary connecting the same bodies of water. You will also be treated to a sight that most don’t get to see, and that is the very acute bend in the East River. If you look at maps they never really prepare you for the fact that looking down river, you see the Williamsburg Bridge and not lower Manhattan like you would expect, because the river looking south makes a sharp right hand turn inward. On a sunny day it’s spectacular.

Usually we only see Roosevelt Island as a placeholder for the Queensboro Bridge, lit up at night and pretty. As real New Yorkers, you probably refer to the Queensboro Bridge by its Simon & Garfunkel name – the 59th Street Bridge, and will never call it by its current name – the Ed Koch Bridge. But Roosevelt Island is so much more than a bridge stanchion and definitely worth a visit. Hope one day you get to experience the sounds of silence of Roosevelt Island.

Roosevelt Island As you know, I like to wander around Manhattan, checking out those things in plain view but so often overlooked. One of those places is Roosevelt Island. Its history is rich, starting with the Canarsie Indians, moving from the Dutch to the English. Back in those days, it

was built. In 1989, the F train began making stops to the Island. Today, the ferry makes a stop there too. Recently Cornell built a technology center right beside the bridge and in 2012 the FDR Four Freedoms Park opened at the southern end of the Island. The north end contains mostly housing units. About 12,000

was known as Blackwell Island named by the owner Robert Blackwell. It is officially part of Manhattan, but is actually leased to New York State. In 1828, the City purchased the Island from the Blackwell family for $32,000. Typical of the city, it was used as a penitentiary, lunatic asylum and as a smallpox hospital. The Queensboro Bridge was constructed between 1900 and 1909, but never provided access to it. It was then called Welfare Island, and a bridge from Queens, now known as Roosevelt Island Bridge, was built to gain access to it. In 1971, the name was changed to Roosevelt Island and in 1976 the Tramway

people live on the Island today and it is a popular neighborhood for nearby diplomats from the U.N. One of the more famous visitors was Nellie Bly who went undercover as a patient at the Women’s Lunatic Asylum and reported what happened there in the New York World as well as her book, Ten Days in a Mad-House. It’s a very different place because there is so little car traffic there; when you look at Manhattan or Queens, it looks like a silent movie. It’s fun to visit, because when else could you ride an ariel tram in Manhattan? If you have a fear of heights like I do, don’t worry, the ride is fairly short, and you use a Metro-

Rockaway Blazes Blue For World Autism Awareness Day This past Monday, April 2 at sundown, you may have been curious about the blue lights beaming from scores of local homes, businesses, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s office, the Transit Plaza at Arverne By The Sea, and even a crowd of adults and children, adorned with blue glow sticks and lighted necklaces, gathered in front of Peninsula Library on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. No, it wasn’t a martian invasion. It was Rockaway showing its blue colors to celebrate World Autism Day, and kudos to Trishia Bermudez, executive director of local nonprofit special-needs organization,

to help raise awareness and shine a bright light on autism as a growing public health crisis in support of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, and Autism Awareness Month which is celebrated in April. Iconic landmarks around the globe — including the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center in NYC, the White House in Washington D.C. — as well as airports, bridges, museums, concert halls, restaurants, and retail stores, are among the more than 100 structures in over 16 U.S. cities and nine countries around the world that light up in bright blue in recognition of autism awareness.
