The Rockaway Pipeline Project is nearing completion, with the project expected to be in full service and providing more natural gas to the area by the end of the month. In the meantime, Williams, the company behind the Rockaway Lateral Project, has announced the recipients of funding from the Rockaway Community Grant Program. In its third round of the program, Williams has awarded more than $120,000 to 23 organizations in or around Rockaway. Through the Rockaway Community Grant Program, Williams has been awarding grants to organizations that benefit the community within the areas affected by the Rockaway Lateral Project. The mission of the Williams Rockaway Community Grant Program is to assist in the development of projects that directly benefit the surrounding communities in which the proposed Rockaway Lateral would be constructed and operated. They first started announcing awards in the spring of 2014. Having announced $115,000 last fall the company has awarded $343,000 so far. Each funding cycle, taking place
in the spring and fall of each year, Williams awards grants up to $15,000 to projects based on community need and those that can provide an environmental benefit or economic development, or to support emergency services, youth and senior programs, or education programs. Community organizations that are interested in applying for the next round of funding have until August 1 to do so. The application can be found at www.williams. com/rockawaygrants. The third cycle of grant recipients announced this spring are: • $15,000 to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department & Ambulance Corps, Broad Channel, NY for Repairs to the Headquarters Building • $14,000 to the Rockaway Point Volunteer Emergency Services, Breezy Point, NY for Firehouse Back up Emergency Generator • $8,900 to the VFW Prince Wynn Post 260, Broad Channel, NY for a Hurricane Sandy Restoration project • $7,500 to the American Littoral Society – Northeast Chapter, Broad Continued on page 32

The Boulevard Of Choices By Michael Leboff
When one crosses the border into Queens, he or she is greeted with a sign that says “Welcome to Queens, the World’s Borough.” The moniker is more than appropriate as almost 50 percent of the population in New York’s largest borough are foreignborn. If Queens is the World’s Borough, then Rockaway Beach Boulevard may soon become known as the World’s Boulevard. Over the past couple of years several restaurants with different ethnic influences have revitalized one of Rockaway’s paramount thoroughfares and have turned it into a foodie hotspot. “I think it is great,” said Leyla Yrala, one of the owners of the new Peruvian restaurant Chicks To Go. “It is what New York City is all about.” Yrala and her sister, Ximena, opened Chicks To Go this past March. The two sisters first moved to New York City from Lima, Peru’s capital and largest city, about 12 years ago, bringing a passion for authentic Peruvian cuisine with them. After working for over a decade in restaurants around the City, the sisters had aspirations of opening their own restaurant. Instead of taking their talents to Brooklyn or Manhattan, they decided to open their own place in their neighborhood. “We live right down the street,” Yrala said. “We love this neighborhood and knew we wanted to open up a restaurant in this spot.” Almost a year after signing the lease for their storefront, the two Peruvian sisters had realized their own version of the American Dream. The Yrala sisters are just two of the many immigrant restaurateurs and business owners who have opened up shop on Rockaway Beach Boulevard which locals are starting to know as Restaurant Row. Just a few blocks down from Chicks To Go is Rockaway Roasters, a new coffee and health food spot on the Boulevard in between Beach 92nd and 93rd Street. Ziv Karasanti, who opened Rockaway Roasters with Joe Mastey, is originally from Israel and also noted that the area is developing into a multi-cultural hot spot. “It is turning into a hip, cool neighborhood,” Karasanti said. Karasanti and Mastey had a vision of opening a place where people in the neighborhood could kick back and relax over a cup of coffee or enjoy one of their signature items. “Instead of grabbing a turkey sandwich they can come here and

try something different,” he added. The two new stops on the block join a growing group of restaurants that have established themselves in the neighborhood. Directly across the street from Roasters is Uma’s, perhaps the only Uzbek restaurant with a surfer theme in the country, and a few doors down from there is The Rock -- an international Tapas Restaurant and wine bar. For a taste of standard American fare, Playland Motel Tavern will feature a new menu this summer. Dan Cipriani, who has had success running restaurants in Brooklyn and a food truck at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, will be in charge of both the restaurant and hotel at Playland. “I am so excited to be on the Boulevard with great food establishments,” Cipriani said. “I come from a large Italian family and all my favorite memories revolve around the kitchen and dining room. This is where we gathered, celebrated, shared ideas and sometimes argued. I think this is true with most cultures and why we open restaurants.” Cipriani is looking to change the reputation of Playland and transform it into a more family-friendly destination. This week he met with members of Rockaway Beach Civic to outline his vision for the space. As of now, it is unsure whether or not Cipriani will be able to use the backyard for dining. The new menu for the tavern is still under construction, but Cirpriani says it will feature a modern take on familiar diner fare with a focus on locally produced food and spirits. He will be previewing the menu at Taste of Rockaway on April 25th. Rockaway Beach Boulevard is fast developing into one of Queens’ top culinary destinations thanks to its diversity which is reflected in the cuisine being offered at the restaurants that call it home. But it’s more than just newcomers. Elegante, Whit’s End, Sayra’s and nearby Connolly’s, Thai Rock and Bungalow Bar are established places that are favorites among locals and visitors alike. You start listing places and you realize, wait, there’s more. Did we mention a new Chinese restaurant will be opening on the Boulevard off Beach 92nd Street? And Beach 96th Street where Rockaway Taco called home will no doubt offer some exciting food choices this summer. Oh, and there’s Surfside Bagels and Uncle Louie G’s and well, it’s The Boulevard of a Choices.

The Parks Department has released its April boardwalk update. With the first phase of the boardwalk expected to be complete by Memorial Day and the second phase by July 4, much work will be taking place between Beach 73rd and Beach 107th Streets this month. In Phase 1 (Beach 86th-97th Streets), the contractors will install pre-cast concrete pile caps and planks for beach access structures in early April. They will finish the delivery and placement of the finished boardwalk concrete planks and will continue to grout the planks. Railing installation and site work will continue. They will install sand fencing and plant beach grass to establish the dune. Sand for the new north side dune will be delivered. Installation of plumbing and electrical utilities will continue in Phase 2 (Beach 97th-Beach 107th Streets). Pile driving for beach access structures will continue here and delivery and installation of access structure pre-cast pile caps will begin. Sand will continue to be delivered and placed under the new boardwalk. Pre-cast planks will start being delivered and placed, followed by railing instal-

lation. Sand fence installation and beach grass planting will continue. Work will also take place in Phase 4A (Beach 73rd-86th Street). Pipe and H-pile driving for the new boardwalk and beach access structures will continue in Phase 4A. Installation of a sand retaining wall will begin in late April. No work will take place in Phase 4B from Beach 60th-Beach 73rd Street due to a Piping Plover Construction Moratorium. Parks also gave updates on the work that has already been com-
pleted. In Phase 1, the installation of the pipe piles, H-piles, sand retaining wall, pile caps, access structure pipe piles and sand fill are substantially complete. Plank placement is almost complete in Phase 1. In Phase 2, the installation of the pipe piles, H-piles, sand retaining wall, pile caps, and access structure pipe piles are substantially complete. In Phase 3, all removals are substantially complete except from Beach 118th to Beach 121st and the contractor is currently demobilized. The remaining

removals will be coordinated and completed based on utility relocation work in the area. In Phase 4B, the removals contractor has finished removing the old boardwalk piles and caps, benches and railings. The boardwalk pipe pile, H-pile driving and installation of the sand retaining wall is substantially complete in Phase 4B and Phase 4B has been closed off for the Piping Plover Moratorium. In Phase 4A, the removals contractor has installed a chain link fence around the site and has finished removing remains of the old boardwalk. Hpile driving is approximately 50 percent complete in Phase 4A and pipe pile driving has begun. As work goes on, some beach access points will be closed off. Work takes place Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., but some work may take place during extended hours from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. during weekdays and some work may take place on Saturdays. The first phase of the boardwalk, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Street is expected to be complete by Memorial Day 2015 and Beach 97th through Beach 107th will be complete by July 4.

Mine Was The Worst Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Psychopaths, you might guess, are short on empathy. And, you probably know, psychopaths not only lack empathy but are cold hearted and manipulative among other things. (I say “probably know” because you might be one). Psychopaths, however, are not necessarily ax murderers or screaming lunatics. They’re just cold, manipulative, lack empathy – common traits, it turns out, among CEOs of companies. Yes, a
study shows, CEOs are more likely to be psychopaths than others. But close your eyes for five seconds. Who in your life fits that description: cold, manipulative, lacks empathy. Who is a psychopath? Send their names to psychos@ rockawawaytimes.com and I’ll print their names in next week’s column. Take it easy you psychopath, I’m only kidding. But you can certainly whisper it to me next time we bump into each other. I have a growing file of psychopaths and can even say, “some of my best friends are psychopaths.”
And friends, don’t ask me if I think you’re a psychopath. I’ll just label you as paranoid, if you do. All this psychobabble I’m dropping on you (there’s more where this came from!) is because it just dawned on me that a lot of us fit the psycho profile. What looks like empathy is really just an opportunity to let that good old self-centeredness shine through. Somebody says they had the flu. How long does it take for another person to say they had it even worse? I gotta get knee surgery, someone says. Three seconds later the response is, I had six of them. There’s an underrated expression, “mine was the worst.” Somebody can say they had heartburn after a spicy meal and someone will chime in, mine was the worst, I thought I was having a heart attack. It took me two hours to get to work on the A train. Empathy? No. It’s time for Can You Top This? You want to mention your rough commute? Mine was the worst. They
told us to get off and take a shuttle and then that train broke down. I had the chickenpox. Mine was the worst. I had them on the bottom of my feet. I couldn’t walk. It really covers a lot of ground. Sometimes literally. Somebody might say, I’m tired, I did a lot of shoveling. And someone will say, mine was the worst. The snowdrifts were on my property. My neighbor had nothing. I knew a guy they called Topper because there was nothing he couldn’t try to top. Even if he had to use a story about someone else. Tom Hanks spends four years castaway on an island. Topper would say, yeah, but that was in the tropics. My uncle was stuck in the South Pole for five years. He might even add, that was the worst, as if Topper himself lived through it. I don’t want you to be paranoid, but watch out for someone who says Mine was the worst – you might be in the presence of a psychopath. But look at the bright side, they might run a company one day.

Boardwalk Job: $25 Mil To Stay on Schedule The City is pouring an additional $67 million into the boardwalk, and nearly $25 million of that is just to make sure that the boardwalk is done on time. As first reported by DNAInfo, representatives from the Economic Development Corporation met with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz last week to present the new budget, including the breakdown of additional funding for the boardwalk. The $67 million is piling on to the $274 million that was originally allocated for the boardwalk rebuild, and it is included in the $480 million FEMA that was awarded for the project by FEMA in February. The biggest chunk of the $67 million in additional funding is $24,800,000 for “additional labor and equipment costs to maintain schedule.” The additional funds are being used to ensure the contractor, Skanska, stays on the “committed public schedule” of completing the boardwalk by 2017. Eighteen-million is going toward “additional construction costs associated with additional sand and planting” for landside dune planting and sand that was not part of the original project plan. Another $12,900,000 will go toward “additional construction costs based on contract awards” since the boardwalk planks wound up costing $13.5 million more than expected.

***** What’s with the construction at Dunkin Donuts on Beach Channel Drive and 113th Street? A “teller machine vestibule” is set to open soon. It’ll just be a room with a couple of ATM cash machines, no tellers. And what about construction next door? The building is getting a facelift and something a lot more exciting than an ATM machine is going in there. Lana’s Loft, the women’s boutique on 116th Street will soon have a fabulous new home at 114-04 Beach Channel Drive. Lana’s will be neighbors of The Rockaway Times. ***** DNAInfo reported this week that Skanska, the boardwalk contractor, is getting an extra $25 million to finish the boardwalk on time. Oh, they must have said, you want it finished on time?! Well, that wasn’t part of the deal. On time? That’ll cost you. ***** There is a large parking lot at the
Klaus Biesenbach has been a great friend to Rockaway. Klaus, curator of MoMA and PS1, has a house in Rockaway and in concert with the Rockaway Artists Alliance and the Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy, brought the great art expo Rockaway! to Fort Tilden last summer. He also organized relief efforts after Sandy and brought the much-loved Dome to Rockaway. Whenever he did something he was always careful to ask if it would be ok with the locals. Recently, he’s come under fire in the art world for courting celebrity too much. Critics say he’s been more interested in stars than art. Well, all he does in Rockaway is court regular people so he’s more than ok in our book! ***** Taste Of Rockaway was such a hit the first time it was tried in December 2013, we knew it had to become a tradition. And it has. The next one is set for Saturday, April 25 and we can’t wait.
foot of the Cross Bay Bridge that is just about always empty. It was used by the MTA and others after Sandy but otherwise it’s the parking lot without cars. People going to nearby businesses (Bungalow Bar, Thai Rock, O’Connor’s Funeral Home) could use it if they only knew how to access it. The problem is you cannot see the parking lot from Beach Channel Drive. The main entrance is only accessible as you come off the Cross Bay Bridge. The other option is enter “the wrong way.” As you head onto the ramp to the bridge from under the El (Rockaway Freeway) you can make a hairpin turn into the parking lot. Miss it and you’re going over the bridge. DOT should redesign and allow access from the Freeway, not on the ramp to the bridge. Phil Goldfeder is calling for the lot to be cleaned by Bridges and Tunnels but finding it is the real challenge. See Page 17 for photos. ***** This one is at least five years old but it’s getting a new life online: Local News. A couple turned themselves into police. Wonder what they were before. ***** Beach fences make concerned neighbors. Beach fencing throughout Belle Harbor and Neponsit have drawn the attention of many (including teens who use them for
bonfires). The replenished beach isn’t as replenished as it was and without jetties the sand just won’t stay. With a washed away beach, the fences, in some places, run into the water now. People have also expressed concern about the way the fences are laid out as they steer people to the right forcing them further away from the street entrance. Parks says it will all be straightened out come summer. ***** One thing Parks shouldn’t wait on is removing or at least marking the old wooden jetties. At higher tides the “death sticks” as they’ve been called are submerged and there is no way swimmers and bathers can see them. ***** You never know what’s for sale on Beach 129th. On Craigslist this week there was a post offering John F. Kennedy’s cigar box “off his desk.” As far we know, it’s still available can be yours for 50 grand. ***** What’s gonna be bigger, kickball or pickleball.? In just the last couple of months we’ve heard these sports are coming to Rockaway. Kickball is like baseball only you kick a big ball and pickleball is like tennis with a wiffle ball. More or less.

Thumbs Up For League
Dear Editor: (Regarding last week’s story about the Stop The Violence Softball League in Far Rockaway) This is a good league I joined last year. At first, I thought about joining the league over and over because the games were played in Redfern, which is not such a good neighborhood, but once I got there everyone greeted me like if I grew up in their neighborhood. This league will be successful for years to come. Jay
New Development Concerns
Dear Editor: (Regarding Boulevard Burnout Zone Sold, 4/2/15) This all sounds good but it is once again pushing the residents of Rockaway out little by little. The rents, I am sure, will be exorbitant like on 90th Street where rents go for $2000. Most hard working people in Rockaway can’t afford that type of rent. We don’t want Chelsea landlords here. Already there are so many things that are not handled. Adding more people here is going make it worse. And, what about all the crime? Where are the new added police men and women? The police are spread so far the residents believe they can’t handle the area they have now. Can you guarantee us more police, firefighters, transportation, safe drinking water, traffic lights, schools, crossing guards, community centers, playgrounds? And yes, we do need playgrounds
we are not just a summer community, there are many families that live here all year around that need all of these services that are already poorly administered to us. Annette Clark
Gym Rat Makes Good
A few weeks ago I was driving on the Cross Island Parkway and all of a sudden there were a few flares surrounding some construction workers in the left lane causing drivers to quickly maneuver over and thus causing other drivers to react (which is never a good thing in New York). There was not
one warning for the road work and it caused unnecessary traffic -again! Here on BCD and Beach 117th Street, there is construction being done rendering it into a one lane road. Once again, no warning. This is a recipe for disaster for drivers taking a left turn. Cones or a flashing light should be set up giving drivers some kind of notice. How about a warning next time? Dear Editor: Hopefully in the next decade traveling by car will go the way of the CD-ROM. Driving in this city is miserable and becomes more miserable everyday. I understand that at times double parking is a necessity, but sometimes its just downright obnoxious. Most of the time you can just pull up, take a right turn and park on a side street rather than clogging up a whole road behind you. So the next time you think about just throwing on the hazards and running a quick errand -- don’t. Stewart Pinkerton

The N.Y.C. DEP and Water Board are about to soak all of us again in what has become an annual rite of spring for the past 20 years - raising our water/sewer rates. Effective July 1, 2015, our water rate will be raised by 3.24 percent meaning that owners of single family homes will see their water bill climb another $33 annually from approximately $1,025 to $1,058. When this year’s increase goes into effect keep in mind that while running for office, our very own Mayor Bil de Blasio stated that “For decades, the water system only charged customers what it needed to cover its costs. But now, anyone who pays a water bill is sending more and more of their money into the city’s general budget. It’s wrong and it has to stop.” Of course now that his campaign is over and de Blasio is actually the perpetually tardy White Rabbit of Wonderland (aka: Mayor of NYC), his views that these annual increases are “wrong” and “have to stop” have been relegated to the dusty archives of political campaign rhetoric and we are faced with yet another rate increase and additional money being diverted to the city’s general fund. Don’t you love politicians, continually keeping their balance by doing the exact opposite of what they say? I’ll be the first to admit that the term “brunch” confuses me. It’s not a philosophical conundrum or some type of veiled passive aggressive question. To put it quite simply, the concept of “brunch” eludes me. What is it? The name would im-
ply that it is a portmanteau of both breakfast and lunch but wouldn’t that simply make it a late breakfast or perhaps an early lunch? If I am planning on attending “brunch” does that mean I should avoid breakfast and remain hungry all morning? In any event, we can all solve this riddle this Sunday, April 12 when the Broad Channel VFW Post 260 on Shad Creek Road serves up heaping plates of eggs, bacon, ham, pancakes, French toast, juice, coffee and more at their brunch between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Meal prices range between $6 and $8. (Hint: I would forego an earlier breakfast if I were you!) Remember, this is a great way to support all the fine work the men and women at the VFW are continually involved with, providing services to our disabled vets. A six hour, two session, Defensive Driving Class will be offered at St. Camillus Springman Hall located at 185 Beach 99th Street on Tuesday nights, April 21 and 28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Registration for this course is $45. To reserve a seat for this class call Helen at 917- 5532409 or 718-945-4648. Satisfactory completion of the course results in a 10 percent reduction of your insurance premium and, for all you “speed racers” out there, a four point reduction on your license. As always, the St. Virgilius Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at the American Legion Hall in Broad Channel. At 12:30 pm. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else? are done for us electronically or digitally. Kids need to get off their tuckus and be active and explore, not only their own creativity, but to try new experiences and to not be afraid of trying new experiences,” camp owner Jack Grosbard said. “Parents need to look at their kids and decide ‘what do I want for my son or daughter?’ Do I want them to experience the world or do I want them to see the world only from a screen? Super Mario needs to be more than a game on a personal screen. Why can’t they be
Super Mario, running, jumping, swimming and engaging with other children?” Mill Basin Day Camp offers kids the opportunity to be Super Mario and beyond. At the camp, kids can learn how to swim, play games like kickball and wiffleball and make arts and crafts. They can discover new skills such as music recording and video editing at the Multimedia center. They can star in their own television shows, which are Continued on page 25

As soon as you enter Mill Basin Day Camp, you know you’re in for a treat. With four slides connecting to an outdoor pool bigger than most backyards, dozens of colorful rooms where different activities take place, basketball courts and more, it could make any adult jealous of the kids that get to spend their summer days there. Located just over the Marine Parkway Bridge and behind El Caribe (5945 Strickland Avenue) in
Mill Basin, Mill Basin Day Camp is a hidden gem that is a discovered treasure for the more than 1,600 children that attend each summer. With a place so close to home that offers more than 50 activities, introduces children to their undiscovered talents, teaches them new things and keeps them active and entertained, it would be a shame to let a child spend their summer indoors, camped out in front of a television or computer. “As time passes, we’re asked to do less as human beings as things

WAYNE GRETZKY NEVER FORGETS they can be totally unapproachable. Others may surprise you, and even take the picture themselves. As with many NHL stars, Gretzky, #99, is widely known for being a total gentleman, a class act, and all around good guy. It’s by no surprise that he quickly warmed up to DJ Teddy one time, after Ted threw a friendly jab about getting a pedicure and facial with Mrs. Gretzky at a spa. A little over five years ago, Gretzky happened to walk into Park Avenue Tavern, a Midtown haunt owned by locals, for a bite to eat. Barbara Heeran, mother of the late Charlie, also happened to be there at the same time. As the story goes, Mrs. Heeran handed Gretzky a Mass card of Charlie’s, and told him “this will bring you good luck.” Calmly he whispered, “I will carry this for the rest of my life.” Charlie Heeran, at 23 years of age, perished in the World Trade Center on 9/11. He was an extremely charismatic, exceptionally bright, and well-liked individual. He had a lot of “best friends,” because that’s the way he made you feel. A Xavier High School and U of Scranton product, he had a promising career on Wall Street as a Bond Trader at Cantor Fitzgerald. But most of all, he was a lovContinued on next page

For anyone that reads this column, you are aware of our feelings on what society has become with the everyday addiction and necessity of all things technology. Rare is a moment when you can find someone under the age of 26 without their phone in hand or at an arms-lengths distance. What comes with that accessibility is the latest “viral” story, craze, or video. On the information super highway, these “viral” moments are an afterthought within a matter of moments. They are given their 15 minutes of fame, and most often quickly sent into obscurity, where they belong. Most are those “gotcha” moments where someone or something is caught in a predicament. By nature, we don’t necessarily want to see terrible things, at the same time people can’t help themselves from witnessing tragedy. Some “viral” stories are those feelgood tales of victory, or redemption, or overcoming obstacles. They make us all warm and fuzzy. But then there are those “once in blue moon/lifetime stories” that are almost unbelievable. The type that can buckle your knees, move you to tears, and just make you proud to be alive in this day in age. In a Beefchip and Rockaway Times exclusive, I believe the following tale is one of them, you be the judge. On a recent trip to Las Vegas for the Nightclub and Bar Convention, a local legend and personality happened to cross paths with the greatest NHL hockey player that ever lived, Wayne Gretzky. The fortuitous encounter does not qualify as “viral,” but what transpired during the interaction does. You see, everyone has had one of those chance encounters with someone they felt was admirable, even heroic. It could be a celebrity, a politician, a sports figure, etc. A star-struck moment may have taken over and after it, you most likely basked in how cool it was to meet your idol. I’ve been there, too. Some celebrities may not be who you thought they were,

ing brother to Sean and Billy, and Annemarie and Bernadette, and proud son to Bernie and Barbara. His loss was devastating, not only to his family and friends, but to this community. The story at Park Avenue Tavern made its rounds in small circles throughout the neighborhood. It was one of those, “Hey did you hear about this” kind of a story, and it made us all smile. Five years later, the story would come up with Gretzky himself over a drink with DJ Teddy. As Ted was inquiring to see if he made good on his promise, Gretzky abruptly ran to grab his wallet to produce the Mass card that Mrs. Heeran had given him. Gretzky then, for the first time showed the card to his younger children and stated, “this is Charlie, he was a good man, who WE lost at the World Trade Center on 9/11.” Cue the chills (and tears), I got them too! As each day passes, we move further and further from an ugly tragedy that changed our way of life forever. And while life has moved on, the memory of those who perished should not. In a time where anyone under the age of 18
has no recollection of that day, are we doing enough to truly “NEVER FORGET?” Gretzky holding on to Charlie’s Mass card and making good on his promise gives me hope. He did not hold on to the card in the odd chance he may run into a friend of Charlie’s. He held onto it because it brought him strength and hope, and he certainly “Never Forgets.” It undoubtedly proves that he is indeed “The Great One.” In the Xavier HS 1996 yearbook, Charlie quotes Dominic Beehan, “For I’ve read of heroes, and wanted the same, to play out my part in The Patriot Game.” I am completely confident and reassured knowing that #99 has done the same. As for how viral this story goes, it matters not. It does deserve more than 15 minutes, but folktales like this need no hoopla, they just make you proud. I would be content with everyone that knew Charlie just hearing about it. I do hope it gets back to him that on behalf of thousands of people of the Rockaway Beach community, we send a BIG Thank You to “The Great One,” you made us all smile. You may be a born Canuck, Wayne, but I am proud to call you one hell of a fellow American!

Facts You Probably Don’t Need As for the facts below, we don’t verify. They might not be facts at all but the Internet says they are! ☛☛☛ ☛ According to a Facebook study, couples are most likely to break up in the spring and two weeks before Christmas. The lowest breakup time was Christmas Day and from August through October ☛ On the first day of spring, a person at the North Pole would see the sun skimming across the horizon, beginning six months of uninterrupted daylight. A person at the South Pole would see the sun skimming across the horizon, signaling the start of six months of darkness. ☛ Honeybees are more likely to swarm during the spring. They swarm as a way to start new colonies from successful ones. Surprisingly, swarming honeybees are very docile and the most friendly they will ever be all year. (But don’t try this at home). ☛ Oh, we’ve got him to blame. Benjamin Franklin first proposed Daylight Saving Time in 1784. Arizona
and Hawaii do not follow daylight savings. They already have enough sunlight and hot weather, so it doesn’t make sense to confuse the sleeping cycle of their residents. ☛ You may have heard that the first day of spring is the only day you can stand a raw egg on its end. It’s not true. Balancing an egg on its end is possible, but it works equally well any day of the year. It’s just that nobody tries it the other 364 days of the year. ☛ Spring fever is a real syndrome. When the temperature rises during the warm spell after a long winter, there is a dilation of the blood vessels so blood can be carried to the body surface where heat can be lost quickly. People experience an energetic feeling when this happens. **The above facts were found on the internet. Take them all with a grain of sand (salt everywhere else, but this is Rockaway).

ously be included here. Whether it’s an old style home as original, rebuilt and refined, exterior, interior, landscape, architecture, a single notable feature that stands out from the rest, adds to our neighborhood’s distinctive charm, or anything else uncategorized that pops up from ocean to bay, let’s talk. You might have to meditate on this column a while to decide for yourselves what constitutes a newspaper worthy home. Be brave; I encourage it. The first feature is targeted and defended specifically on literary grounds, even if it’s not exactly a formal dwelling, and also because most of us would never have the talent to create such a thing. Symbolic of new life in Rockaway is a greenhouse situated on the corner of 92nd Street and Holland Avenue in what appears to be a vacant lot (dimensions unknown). Conceived, designed, and built in fall of 2014 by Filmmaker Sam Fleischner, this greenhouse is definitely the most recent addition to our community and more than worthy of a humble brag. What’s unique and innovative about this gorgeous installment is that it’s made almost entirely of recycled windows belonging to Elsa Brute de Rémur (think: solar power), and
even has some cute garden beds next to it, too. I didn’t have the nerve or opportunity to ask, “Why is there no door? Will there be one in the next phase of additions? Is this a purely aesthetic decision so that the symmetry of the windows is not disturbed by the placement of a door? Am I blind and just didn’t see a door? Is it because you decided it wasn’t in your best budget interest to get a door? Did you spend the door funds for jet setting instead?” The good thing about having artists around here is they’ll teach you to keep being observant and analytical about life, and to keep paying very close attention to your
environment. I want to live inside. All my belongings would easily fit, and I’d be happy to pay rent. I don’t need a door. I can just fit through the window. A tiny outhouse next to it would be great, though. Go admire this piece of art. I have the highest expectations for future projects in this yard. Cue to use this as inspiration to build your own greenhouse or garden bed. Oh, and Sam can build a pretty sick driftwood desk, too. So much of our lives are reflected in our homes. So many of these comfort zones were on hiatus while we all spent the past two years demolishing, restoring, repairing, and rebuilding after Sandy (and some of us are still doing so) that, in exhaustion, the charm had seemingly been lost and forgotten. Now it’s time that Rockaway go back to accentuating the most flattering houses and the stories born in them. This new column is intended to accentuate the best homes from Bayswater to Breezy Point. I know you’re asking exactly what qualifies for a showstopper home to be featured in The Rockaway Times. We could argue about that. Maybe it’s a homeowner who’s hell bent on portraying their home in a certain angle, in the best light, after it’s been dusted. Maybe it’s ultra modern, stronger than before the storm, and it has an unforgettable story to be shared for the benefit of the community. Is it in some way more efficient and ecofriendly than anyone in your zip code and you have a competitive streak to show off? Let’s see it. Even a million dollar home looks different to everyone but that, too, can and should obvi-

Superstorm Sandy Flood Litigation After Sandy damaged our family home in Rockaway, my law firm decided to fight for all homeowners who were underpaid on their flood insurance claims. We joined forces with Gauthier Houghtaling & Williams, the law firm that recovered millions for homeowners after Hurricane Katrina. Our team took the flood insurance companies to federal court and beat them.
Falsified inspection reports
As reported by 60 Minutes in The Storm After the Storm our team discovered that flood insurance companies used falsified inspection reports to underpay flood claims. The false reports attributed the damage to “earth movement” or “settlement” or “preexisting.” When the fraud was exposed, FEMA approached our team to settle all flood insurance lawsuits filed on behalf of our clients (over 800 lawsuits). If a flood insurance engineer inspected your house you may have been fraudulently underpaid. Check your flood claim documents for an engineer report especially one with one of these logos:
Was I underpaid?
You were underpaid if flood insurance didn’t pay for all the covered flood damage to your house.
FEMA will send you a letter
FEMA says it will review your flood insurance claim but remember these are the same people who underpaid you the first time. If flood insurance underpaid your claim, we will get you the money you deserve. If we don’t win, you owe us nothing.

Easter Fun In Arverne By The Sea It was a happy Easter indeed at The Palmers Landing Homeowners Association at Arverne by the Sea. On Saturday April 4 the Association had its fifth annual Easter egg hunt. Of course, the event was made all the more special by the visit from the Easter bunny and the local FDNY friends of Engine 266. Almost fifty children got gifts and enjoyed searching for eggs and face painting.
WEST POINT DAY Rockaway has had a long tradition of sending fine young men and women to the country’s military academies. On Saturday, April 18th, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., members of the United States Military Academy at West Point will host “West Point Day” at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, an event open to all New Yorkers. West Point Day showcases the academy’s focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math as well as various other activities through the experiences of the Cadets themselves. The day’s events will provide a unique opportunity to meet and speak with Cadets currently enrolled in the USMA, ask questions of the USMA leaders, learn about club activities and view military equipment displays. Cadet Clubs will host events such as power lifting, boxing, competitive cyber

and law enforcement demonstrations. A parachute jump by the USMA Jump Team is also scheduled albeit weather permitting. The Harbor Defense Museum will have its historic weaponry, uniforms and other items on full display. At 10:30 am sharp a parade of Cadets will march from the Corps of Engineers North Atlantic Division Headquarters (building 302) to Engeldrum Bluff. The tradition of the “Long Grey Line,” a phrase that refers to the unique ties which bind every West Point graduate to all those that have come before, will be on full display as the Cadets pass and review in their dress grey and white uniforms. At the end of the parade on Engeldrum Bluff, West Point Pipes and Drums and Drill Team will showcase their talents for the public. Admission onto Fort Hamilton will begin at 8 a.m..
Why is this lot empty? Because you can’t get to it. Not easily anyway. The main entrance is only available to cars coming from Broad Channel over the Cross Bay Bridge. To enter it legally from Rockaway you have to drive over the bridge, turn around, and come back. If you want to skip that ridiculous route, you can enter the ramp from the Rockaway Freeway and Beach 94th (see photo) and make a hairpin turn into the lot. If you miss the sharp turn ,you’ll be heading over the bridge. The lot could be a great option for customers of nearby businesses but in its current design it’s nearly impossible to point people in the right direction.

Goldfeder Wants Preparedness Award Nominees In an effort to raise awareness of the many individuals and organizations that contributed to the Sandy recovery efforts in southern Queens and Rockaway, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is calling for nominations for the 2015 FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards. Nominations will be accepted until the program’s deadline on April 10th. “During our darkest hours following Sandy, it was our own community that came together and worked to recover from the devastation,” Goldfeder said. “The Community Preparedness Awards are a way to recognize our local heroes and I encourage everyone to consider nominating someone who helped make a difference.” The FEMA Individual and Community Preparedness Awards Program is a national program designed to honor individuals, organizations and municipalities for making outstanding contributions towards improving community safety, encouraging preparedness and enhancing resiliency in the face of disasters. According to the program’s website, awards are given in nine different categories, including five that have designated applicant requirements. · Outstanding Citizen Corps Council Award: only open to registered Citizen
Corps Councils · Community Preparedness Heroes: designated for an individual or individuals · Outstanding Community Emergency Response Team Initiatives: CERTs and CERT Programs · Outstanding Citizen Corps Partner Program: open to Fire Corps, Neighborhood Watch, Medical Reserve Corps, Volunteers in Police Service, and CERT Programs · Excellence in Volunteer Sustainability: for volunteer programs serving emergency preparedness and response The other four categories are open to any individual, program, organization or municipality dedicated to individual and community preparedness. Mystery Alive In Dead Horse Bay Jeramiah Hill walks all over the peninsula and sometimes across the bridges. Regular readers have seen his seal photos. This time he came across what looks like millstone over in Dead Horse Bay. The strange engravings make us wonder if there is dark secret or conspiracy behind this strange object.

More Creativity From PS 114 Creative Writers from Joan Diehl’s Class Show The Write Stuff
I LOVE BASKETBALL By Sophia Knoetgen
Most girls like to play with Barbie dolls and dress up, but not me! I’ve been on the basketball court since I was one-year old. Even though I wasn’t the best at first, I practiced so hard my toes started to get numb. Every day I was on my feet practicing and getting better and better by the week. And my dad was my coach. We would practice anywhere, anytime, any day. Just dad and me. But I didn’t practice in any ordinary hoop. I called it the “dad hoop.” My dad would hold his arms in a circle, and I would throw the little elmo ball into his circled arms. We would practice at the beach.
Just dad and me. I would throw the little elmo ball into the ocean, and the waves would bring it right back into my little hands. We practiced at the park. Just dad and me. Later, I threw the little elmo ball into the big hoop that seemed to be like the ring of Saturn. Then we would play a little game, just me and dad. Every game we played I would win, and every shot he took would miss by a mile. I didn’t find out he was going easy on me until I was five. We often played until sunset and I’d ride away on dadda’s shoulders. And now I’m ten and my dad is always supporting me, and without him, I wouldn’t be the basketball player I am today!
I LOVE SKIING By James Wageman
I hit the slopes early as the snowflakes kissed my cheeks. When I looked up at the mountain, it looked like an ice-cream sundae. Slow as a snail, I got to the top of the hill. My snowboard was a jet taking me down the hill. THUMP! I went down hard as a rock. Like a jackrabbit, I hopped
up and kept gliding down the hill. “Oh no, an ice patch!” When I hit the patch, I went spinning around like a top. At the end of the mountain I tried to stop. I crashed into my sister. “Ahhhhh,” she said as she fell on the ground. Even though I left the hill with bumps and bruises, I still felt like a champ!

The moment my first creative writing class started, my eyes lit with fire. Off the bat we were into action, and I will never forget the first thing Mrs. Diehl said to us— “Creative writing is like magic”. From that moment, my heart started pounding like a drum and my head pumped with fuel. Every question she asked made my hand shoot up like a rocket ship going into space. Similes and metaphors jumped around
my head like they were throwing a party. Getting every answer right was like shooting basketballs into a hoop and making it every time, because I still felt that magic. It was almost as if Mrs. Diehl had sprinkled pixie dust on me. Mrs. Diehl’s saying raced around my head like “The Flash”. You know, I’m never going to forget what Mrs. Diehl said to me on that first day. That magic will always be sprinkled on me, and Mrs. Diehl has made me a great writer.
SCIENTIFIC WONDER By Haiden Danto-Scanlan
Some people say I’m the smartest person ever. But that was Albert Einstein and that’s why I want to be like him. Science is my favorite subject. I mix chemicals, study rocks and look at cells in science class. When I pour the liquid mercury and magnesium phosphorous out of their vials, they POP, FIZZ and CRACK right in front of my eyes and their sounds make me wonder, “What odd concoction will I end up making?” Outside in the street, I watch the sediment in puddles as it runs into the sewer, showing me the fastest form of erosion. My teacher, Ms. Cutler, is the best at explaining photosynthesis. She shows us chlorophyll on the Smart Board and

enlarges it so the chlorophyll looks like frog eyes. “Okay, class, look here at...,”she would say as she points to the chlorophyll. “This green around the outside is called the cell wall, holding the cell together.” After I do an experiment, my pencil does a perfectly coordinated dance with my hand when I write my conclusion on a sheet of paper. Since I was seven, I’ve been fascinated by Newton’s Cradle, with its silvery balls and clear strings. It taught me energy transference while the seagulls outside my window school me on flight. I know that someday people will be able to fly without planes, and I’ll have written the blueprints. Hmm, maybe I’ll be like Albert Einstein after all.

broadcasted on BCAT TV channel 13. They can learn to be a circus performer with skills like juggling, unicycling, clowning or walking on stilts. They can use their wild wild west imagination in Tiny Town, which is a miniature version of an old western town. Both girls and boys can learn to bake. They can learn to build with floor-to-ceiling Legos in the Lego lab. They can get active on a jungle gym, ropes course, in the gymnastics studio or on a 15,000 sq-ft sports center. They can enjoy some screen time with different movies in the 60-seat 3D theater, play games in the video arcade room or learn a new program in the computer lab. Campers can also go on day or overnight trips, which they might not normally get to go on, with parents having busy work schedules. Some trips include museums, aquariums, water parks, baseball games, science centers and more. Kids can learn hip-hop, modern or jazz dance in one of two dance studios, learn an instrument in a rock band, practice their singing with karaoke, or show off their acting talents in the drama theatre. The camp holds talent shows, where campers can show off their newly-discovered or developed
talents, without being judged by fellow campers. “There are so many things for kids to try outside of what they’re usually shown. We really want to show them that its okay to try as much as they like to or as little as they want,” Grosbard said. “We promote creativity and imagination and we feed into what the kids like to do, but maybe they don’t know how to do it. No matter how you do it, it’s fine. The kids are non-judgmental. It’s a nice thing for them. It’s a safe place for them to be themselves and to let others see them as themselves.” The camp makes the day as fun as possible for the kids and as convenient as possible for the parents. The camp provides round-trip transportation on air-conditioned buses, to bring them between their homes and camp. Grosbard says there are three buses alone that make trips to pick up children on the Rockaway peninsula and they make trips as far as Long Island. The cost of camp can seem pricey, ranging but $1,800 to $2,900 for the summer depending on the age, number or days and number of weeks a camper registers for, but the costs are a bargain compared to the cost of babysitting. “What’s
the alternative? Let’s say you work 40 hours a week and travel an hour back and forth. You’re out of the house 50 hours a week, paying a babysitter $10 an hour. You’re paying for childcare that doesn’t come with food, trips, activities and friends. You multiply that by eight weeks and you’re looking at $4,000 in childcare for the summer,” Grosbard said. Mill Basin Day Camp is open to children starting as young as twoand-a-half years old and ranging to teens entering 9th grade. The camp season begins Monday, June 29 and continues through Friday,

nal art, all placed at the watermark imprint level that we all knew too well. More art is on the windowsills. The back wall was almost entirely made of windows. Did Fleischner and Klossner have a meeting of the minds? Upstairs was a single open floor space. Entertainment center and couch, computer/work station, and a sweet drum set in the corner. The spot at which I took the photograph was exactly where the Klossners hosted neighbors, friends, and a bunch of pets during Sandy. From the second floor they were all able to overlook what felt like an aquarium experience to them: the water levels outside and inside were different. Lining the back wall of their yard was a crop of bamboo poles and a wooden shed/tool house used strictly to make surfboards. Thanks to the hospitable Klossners for inviting me in and giving me a great eyeopener of 87th Street. If you’d like to have your home featured in a flattering light, I’m happy to schedule a quick walkthrough and I can be reached by e-mail at patricia.hannan@gmail.com.

here is beyond me. I’d be the first customer. Anyone else agree? An enormous teachable moment is next. The only time I drive down Beach 87th Street is to go to CVS, and I haven’t seen anything special down that block my entire life, but it finally happened this week. It’s a showstopper and you should be jealous of not having had the same privilege to see this dwelling. I met with surfers, artists, and do-it-all designers, Lois Pyanowski and Scott Klossner. When I stood a few yards from the Rockaway Beach Surf Club and the elevated A-line, Scott greeted me barefoot to get the morning paper. The story of their home began like this: a couple of knuckleheads were in the middle of the street shooting at each other and a bullet hit their plain, aluminum/vinyl exterior at 318 Beach 87th Street (no one was hurt). You’d never suspect what’s behind the minimalist, heavy-duty concrete frame and wooden gate on the 4,000-squarefoot lot. I knew it had to be good because there was not even a walkway to a standard bell that us average kids have. To summarize the indoor experience in one word? Wow. Fully loaded, actually. A guy named Xavier Ceniceros built the place 16 years ago and there was no bidding war for the Klossners. Mr. Ceniceros gave them exactly five minutes to decide if they wanted to buy it. That was 10 years ago. The door opened to a pop of energetic, bright orange wall color, and the stainless steel kitchen was a mere shadow compared to the centerpiece glass staircase with a larger-than-life, original painting (of Shore Front Parkway) that hung above it. On the opposite wall was another display of numerous pieces of origi-

Selling A Bill Of Goods Yes I am as outraged as everyone else at the insane additional cost overruns of 67 million dollars which the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC) claims it needs to continue to rebuild our Rockaway Beach Boardwalk here on the Rockaway Peninsula. It has been mentioned time and time again that the reconstruction of our boardwalk is the largest construction project in NYC Parks history. For this NYC, through EDC, has hired Skanska, one of the worlds largest construction companies. One would think that this is a quite simple project in the overall scheme of things. Our boardwalk is essentially a 6.5 milelong raised sidewalk with a great foundation! It boggles the mind that the greatest city in the world would not just simply put the job of rebuilding our boardwalk out to the lowest bidder and include in that low-bid contract, incentive bonuses to finish ahead of schedule and penalties for finishing later than the agreed upon completion date. No one seems to be able to answer the question that I have raised at dozens of meetings; what is the price of the contract? Sure we all are aware that Parks has repeatedly said that the cost would be $274 million. If this is a low bid contract, there is a possibility that Skanska’s low bid was $183 million or $201 million or $219 million. My point is this: WHY THE HELL CAN NO ONE ANSWER THIS QUESTION????? Of course there is also the possibility that the boardwalk reconstruction is a Time and Material job, this is similar to when you hire a plumber or an electrician to do a repair in your home and they give you a bill for labor and material when the job is done. EDC issued a document outlining additional funding being used to complete the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk. In it there are a few items, which pertain to several topics that I have written about in the past. I have hounded Parks and EDC at every meeting and
have urged all our elected officials to find out where our FEMA reimbursement is for our 1.5 miles of parks and playground obliterated from Superstorm Sandy. The Rockaway Beach Civic has asked these questions, Friends of Rockaway Beach has asked these questions and Queens Community Board 14 has asked these questions. After reading the document, there happens to be $18 million for dune planting for “THE LAND SIDE” along Shore Front Pkwy (SFP). To refresh everyone’s memory, we have a conceptual plan for “THE LAND SIDE” along Shore Front Pkwy! The plan included play areas for our children, kiddy skate parks, sitting areas, basketball courts, exercise equipment, modified soccer fields and multiple handball courts. For the past two years, Parks and EDC has claimed there is “NO MONEY” to complete the conceptual plan for SFP, the only park in the entire NYC Parks system that was totally destroyed from Sandy. They have said, while we wait for FEMA, in lieu of the conceptual plan, they will plant dunes. Are they for real???? They claim to have no money for our children to have their parks back, but they have $18 million for dunes! It’s becoming more and more evident with each passing day what NYC Parks Commissioner Silver meant back in September of 2014 when he said the additional FEMA funding of $200 million would be a political liability: CLANCY-GONE! WEBER-GONE! KIMBLE-GOING! I urge each and every one who agrees with me that there needs to be greater financial oversight of our FEMA funding for our Rockaway Beach boardwalk, to please call NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer and ask him to look into the gross misuse of FEMA funding for our boardwalk. Also ask: what is Skanska charging the people of the Rockaway Peninsula for our boardwalk? 212-669-3961.

We Care New York Offers Free Prom Dresses By Sheneca Sharpe
We Care New York, a charity organization, is hosting its third year of Free Prom Boutiques. In the spring following Sandy, with people struggling and unable to afford so much, We Care New York, decided to help girls enjoy a springtime tradition. We Care New York, believes that prom shouldn’t be a time where you have to worry about finding a prom dress, but where you should enjoy a once in a lifetime experience. They’ve decided to make that process more enjoyable, by getting
a free prom dress. “After Hurricane Sandy, We Care New York wanted to help teenagers to have the best time possible during prom, for them not to worry about affording a prom dress”, Marissa Bernowitz, Director of Queens Division said. In order to receive a prom dress, there are no requirements involved; as long as you’re going to prom you can get a free prom dress. We Care New York, also offers shoes and clutches to go along with the dress. The organization has set aside two dates for the Free Prom Bou-

Baseball Bizarro: Yanks Down; Mets Up By Michael Leboff
Fourth place. That is where oddsmakers in Las Vegas believe that the New York Yankees will finish in the American League’s Eastern Division this season. Let this sink in for a moment. The last time the Yanks finished 4th in the AL East was in 1992 -- or the year Derek Jeter was drafted. Since ‘92, the Bombers have won 13 division titles, seven American League Pennants, and five World Series. It was a truly remarkable run and one we can now start to appreciate, because it is over. This doesn’t mean the Yankees are going to stink. It just means they will be different. Things are changing in the Bronx and as luck would have it, this may not be the worst time for a new beginning in the American League. For the first time in years the division is wide open and the American League is without a true Goliath, meaning every team has a chance. Should the Yankees find an identity and stay healthy, they could take advantage of a wide open race and crash the gates of the American League. Jusst a few boroughs over, things are looking a bit brighter. Finally, after years of organization-wide ineptitude that left Mets fans with a what could go wrong next type of mentality, the window is open for the Amazins and just like in the Bronx, fans, things are changing in Flushing. While pundits are predicting the Yankees to falter, their crosstown rivals are one of this Spring’s sexy picks to make a run at the postseason. The Mets come into the season with their sights set on October thanks to a young, exciting staff highlighted by Matt Harvey and, reigning National League
Rookie of the Year, Jacob deGrom. The rise of the Mets could also mean that the Yankees will have an even tougher time drawing people to the ballpark. For the past several seasons, the Yankees have been the only competitive team in town. If a neutral fan had to choose a game to see, they most likely would go with the better team and head to see stars play in the Bronx rather than Queens. Now, the star power advantage lies with the Mets. Like Derek Jeter was for so many years, Harvey is now the big ticket in town. That’s right, expectations are sky high for the Mets. What could go wrong? Well, compared to the Yankees, the timing of the Mets’ rise is pretty unfortunate. After years of futility, the National League East is one of baseball’s strongest divisions and features the Washington Nationals, the odds-on favorite to win the World Series. In addition to the Nats, the Marlins are expected to be competitive and the NL’s other two divisions each feature at least three teams that have a legitimate claim to contend. Even with tough competition there is plenty to be excited about for Mets fans. They are in an enviable position and are loaded with talent throughout the entire organization. It is shaping up to be an interesting baseball season in New York. Things are not as they once were, but the beautiful and maybe terrifying thing about America’s Pastime is just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, it takes a sharp turn and the next thing you know you wake up in a world where the Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres have better shots at winning a World Series than the New York Yankees.

Kickball League Looks to Kick Off in Fort Tilden
and some joy.” The league is deemed non-competitive, but ever since they threw a championship trophy into the mix, the competition has turned up a notch. Professional umpires even make calls during the games. At the end of the season, the winning team gets a golden or silver trophy, which is literally a spray-painted kickball. “When the women first started playing, it wasn’t as competitive,” Staiano said. “But when they came in for the next season, they started to get so competitive because they want that ball. The winning team took pictures, they brought it to work. They took that ball everywhere they went. HOT & FRESH MAKES US BEST!
They’re actually playing to win something and they have so much fun with it.” Staiano hopes the Rockaway league will be a success. She has spent several weeks promoting the league around the neighborhood and has received positive feedback so far. “Everyone has been very receptive. I’m really excited about these girls. I have a really good feeling about them. Once the ball gets rolling on this, I’ll be very excited.” For more information about the league, or to download registration forms, check out http://www.kikickball.com/.

Remember the days of playing kickball in the schoolyard? The game isn’t just for kids in gym class anymore. A women’s kickball league is coming to Rockaway and it promises to be a lot of fun. Kickin’ It Women’s Kickball League, which has already had success on Long Island, is coming to Rockaway. Debora Staiano created the first Long Beach Women’s Kickball League at the Long Beach City Recreation Center in 2012. After a successful first season, she decided to create an independent league with Melissa Barnett, and they took it to Eisenhower Park in Nassau County. Now they’re inviting Rockaway to join in on the fun. Softball leagues are common in the summertime, but Staiano wanted to bring something different to the women of Long Beach. “I was at the Long Beach Rec center watching all of these men play softball, and I realized that women don’t have much to play themselves,” Staiano said. “Not every woman is so athletic, where they can play softball. Kickball just came to me. I just wanted to bring something that everyone can play. Even if someone is really good, or even if they suck, it doesn’t matter. It’s just fun. The women just come out and they laugh and they have a great time.” The league has played in Eisenhower Park for the past three years and has grown to more than 300 players. “It is crazy fun and it’s hysterical. It brings a lot of joy to the women,” Staiano said. To add to the fun, the women sometimes dress up. “We’ve had women show up in tutus, in bras, and in wigs. We used to have themes every week and now the women take it upon themselves. They love to dress up and get crazy.” With theme events like Radio Bingo,
Country nights and team events like volleyball and softball, already being popular in Rockaway, Kickin’ It Kickball is expected to be a local success. “I got a good feeling about Rockaway,” Staiano said. “I grew up in Long Beach and I feel like Rockaway is our brother and sister. Why not bring kickball to you? We went through so much together, helping each other through Hurricane Sandy, and we should continue to be there for each other. It’s a no brainer. Rockaway is right over the bridge and it’s a great community of people that we would like to be a part of.” On Saturday, April 11, the Kickin’ It Kickball League will be holding registration from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the baseball fields in Fort Tilden (169 State Road) for any woman who is interested in joining. Players must be age 21 or older and there is a $90 registration fee for the sevenweek season, which will kick off on April 19, if registration is successful. Players can join with a team, or individually. A team must have at least 10 players and can have as many as 15. Each game, which will be played on Sunday afternoons in Fort Tilden, will last 45 minutes to an hour. For the women of Long Island, the league has been a fun way to get together and relieve stress. “It gives them a sense of belonging. For some of these girls who are in their 40, 30s or late 20s, it’s very hard to make friends and it’s hard to meet up with old friends. The league brings people together. They think, ‘hey, Sunday is my day and I’m gonna go down and play.’ These women come with their husbands, boyfriends, kids, some have a barbecue or picnic. It’s turned into a whole family thing. There’s so much going on in the world and you spend your time struggling to make a paycheck and pay rent. This gives them a chance to just breathe and have fun. It gives you peace of mind

Waldman and Jeffrey Wolk of Temple Beth El, Cantor Jennifer Rubin and Musical Director Stuart Rauch of West End Temple, along with other soloists and a Youth Choir will enhance the solemnity of the program. The 90-minute evening program promises to be a meaningful and educational memorial, suitable for adults and children. Even though it’s 70 years after the Holocaust, people must be reminded that intolerance and hatred remains a danger to humanity around the world. The Holocaust should not be forgotten. Taking that one step towards feeling better inside or making a change can seem daunting, but a little mindful effort can go a long way. A friend recently told me that, rather than spiral down in the wintry icy snowy grey environment, he decided to embrace his reality and go out, go sledding and skiing. The first time he did these activities with an open heart and mind, he felt better. He changed his approach to something he clearly detested and his outlook took a positive turn. Rather than wallow in a negative feeling of sadness that could come from lack of daylight, or anger from not being able to enjoy life at that moment, introduce something positive to do and integrate it into your daily life. It may be difficult, especially when we’ve felt a certain way for a long time, or acted in a certain way as far back as we can remember. But nothing is set in stone and everything is constantly changing even if we don’t see it. So we can change too to feel happier and more at peace. The first step is to introduce the thought. For example, “I may be able to enjoy. . . by doing . . .” and just let that thought come up over and over. Again, it is mindful effort – not just letting life be around you and accepting things as they are and as they have always been. One day, you’ll do it and certainly will be surprised at how easy and fulfilling it is to change something that you didn’t feel good about.
It really has to do with how we look at all that makes up our lives: the perspective, the point of view – the attitude with which we approach anything. Being complacent in the face of difficulty, hardship, distress, sorrow, whatever, only perpetuates it. Find the cause of these afflictions and say no. Feed the mind with the introduction of a changing thought and let your inner power lead the way. We can approach everything in two ways: with a good attitude or with a bad attitude. And it definitely is a choice we come upon through mindful effort. Which one do you think gets the best results? Which one makes one feel well and healthy? And as an added benefit, acting with a good attitude is contagious. It makes others feel better and more apt to be cooperative and not defensive. Imagine your heart as a lotus flower, and the very center a jewel in the center of that lotus flower engendering generosity toward yourself, harmony within the universe, enthusiasm to have a good attitude and insight into what can help to bring more of these qualities into your life. “It is very important to generate a good attitude, a good heart, as much as possible. From this, happiness in both the short term and the long term for both yourself and others will come. “ Dalai Lama Question/comment: Email us at BeWellBeHappy2@gmail.com

Ask the
DOC Cigarette Smoking By Peter Galvin, MD
Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com
Cigarette smoking continues to be a major health problem with devastating consequences. Tobacco use in the USA remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and death, causing an estimated 443,000 deaths per year, or one adult every eight seconds. Onethird of smokers die early, with men losing 13 years of life and women 15 years. The Surgeon General has established that the following diseases are directly linked to smoking: lip, oral, esophageal, stomach, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, laryngeal, lung, bladder and kidney cancers, leukemia, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, aortic aneurysm, emphysema and pneumonia. Smoking is highly addictive, some say more so than heroin. Nicotine accounts for its addictiveness by stimulating reward centers in the midbrain but it doesn’t cause the diseases linked to smoking. Burning tobacco creates about 4800 compounds, many of which are carcinogens. Smoking is estimated to cost the US $96 billion in healthcare costs and $97 billion in lost productivity every year. Nicotine addiction has many of the classic signs of addiction, namely tolerance, mental preoccupation with smoking, squandering scarce financial resources on smoking and withdrawal symptoms. Eventually nicotine addicts tend to crave and value nicotine more than health and life itself. Many smokers want to quit, one survey putting that number at 68 percent, but either can’t or do and then relapse. Because nicotine stimulates the midbrain, quitting strategies like counseling, common sense and willpower often cannot overcome the chemical nature of the addiction. But there are other means to quit. The first therapy option is nicotine replacement using gum, patches, nasal spray or lozenges. This avoids exposure to the harmful chemicals in tobacco but does
not stop the nicotine addiction, although nicotine blood levels are only 30 to 50 percent of levels seen with smoking. One disadvantage is that some patients continue to use nicotine replacement for years. Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) is a prescription medication that has had some success in helping people quit. Its mechanism of action is unknown and it does have a number of side effects (i.e. insomnia) and contraindications. Varenicline (Chantix), also by prescription, is more effective than Bupropion. It is a “designer” drug which blocks the nicotine reward centers in the brain while at the same time partially stimulating them to give the patient the pleasurable feeling. It does have some medical and psychiatric contraindications and the most common side effect is vivid dreams. E-cigarettes, which supply nicotine without the harmful combustion by-products, are not marketed as an aid to quitting, so they are not regulated by the FDA. There have been no long-term studies on the use of e-cigarettes so their use in quitting and their long-term risks are unknown. Therefore they remain just an unregulated method of introducing nicotine into the body. The most common method of quitting is to start with nicotine replacement, then if that fails, switch to Varenicline, then Bupropion if Varenicline fails. There are also quit lines to help (1-800-QUIT-NOW). Weight gain will occur after quitting, especially in women. Talk to your doctor for help in quitting. You’ll not only be healthier but will have some extra pocket money, as smoking has become a very expensive habit. For more information on smoking Google the US Department of Health and Human Services and/or the CDC (Centers for Disease Control). Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes. com

BCAC – To Celebrate 20th Little League Opening Day Parade The Broad Channel Athletic Club JBLL will kick off the 2015 Little League season on Saturday April 18th at 930 a.m. at the 17th Road Park. This will be the twentieth consecutive year the children, their coaches, and league members will march down Cross Bay Blvd. and celebrate yet another year of little league baseball, t-ball and girls softball. The BCAC will honor the men and women of the 100th Pct. NYPD. The Grand Marshal will be their commanding Officer, Captain Adelman. Martine Feeney of the BCAC said “ This honor is well deserved as the community of Broad Channel recognize these Officers who protect our community especially our children, this honor is long overdue and well deserved, congratulations to each and every member of the 100th Precinct” In addition to the honorees, Mr. BCAC, Charlie Ledogar, will throw out the first pitch to officially open the 2015 season. “Charlie has been the foundation of the club since the 70s and is the ultimate member of the BCAC, his years of service to our community can never be matched and the BCAC is what it is today because of Charlie, we thank him for all the years and his continued inspiration to the
younger members of the club.” Feeney said. In considering the 20 year run, Feeney added, “It doesn’t seem that long ago when the first BCAC little league parade was held in May 1995, all the players, coaches, league members and family met at the BCAC located on Noel Road and marched up to the ball fields located at the old day camp. That was a day many of us will never forget as we were celebrating the opening of the new fields and hockey rink, all made possible by fundraising and hard work by all of our member’s and neighbors. Only a couple of years later the BCAC refurbished Memorial Field and we have been holding our opening day ceremonies there ever since.” Over the last two decades thousands of children wearing their sparkling new uniforms and those big smiles have enjoyed the sport of T-ball/base/softball at BCAC Memorial Field. This passage of life has been experienced by many who in fact have the opportunity now to coach and/or watch their grandchildren play ball on the same field they once played. Although the complex has been upgraded to what it is today it will always be known as “The Field” and that is a treasure that will never
change and the memories will last forever. Today the club is led by President Jim Mangan and his board. These members volunteer hun-
dreds of hours each year keeping the BCAC Dream Alive. Feeney praised them for their tireless efforts and said “Let’s hope the parades continue forever…”

Hundreds of boys and girls between the ages of 4-14 are getting ready to participate in one of spring’s most treasured traditions as Rockaway Little League returns this weekend. The 2015 regular season will feature 54 teams playing in 9 divisions, including one challenger division for special needs players, and will run from this weekend until mid-June. Even though the first games of the season will be played this weekend, the Opening Day Festival will take place the weekend of April 25th at Fort Tilden. The Opening Day Festival will feature a parade,
ROCKAWAY GLIDERS
games, and other entertainment as the community comes together to celebrate the new season. In addition to the players, Rockaway Little League is made possible through the hard work of volunteers led by longtime President Marty Andresen. Little League volunteers and committees maintain all field and equipment throughout the season. In the past, honored guests like then Congressman Charles Schumer have attended the Opening Day Festival to honor America’s Pastime. Schumer played an integral role in helping the Little League find a permanent home after the fields at Riis Park became unplayable.
