We’re Getting Bigger Boats— and More Frequent Ferry Service! By Katie McFadden
Last week, NYC Ferry celebrated its first year in service, and just a few days later, they announced some very big news. It looks like summer 2018 will be smooth sailing after the City announced that it will be adding more frequent trips, bigger boats, and even an express Rockaway service to alleviate some of the summer crowding.
On Thursday, May 3, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that after looking at first year numbers, the expected ridership for the citywide ferry system could reach nine million yearly passengers by 2023. With this being about double the initial projection, the city is going to pour $300 million into the system over the next five years to make vast improvements, many of which will arrive starting this summer.
“New Yorkers have spoken. We’re going to need bigger boats,” Mayor de Blasio said. “We’re gearing up to meet the extraordinary demand for more public transit on our waterways.” Among some of the changes coming to the citywide service include expanding the ferry fleet by nearly doubling the number of boats, creating a second homeport facility to house the additional boats, infrastructure improvements and upgrades to NYC Ferry landings to accommodate large crowds, and improvements to the main ferry terminals at Pier 11/Wall Street and East 34th Street. Several big changes will be seen across the system, and especially Rockaway, starting in late spring/early summer. This includes the addition of three brand new 350-passenger boats to the system later this summer, plus deploying up to eight charter vessels
that can hold between 250-500 passengers, in addition to the already-existing 149-passenger boats. Boats will be running more frequently, arriving every 20-30 minutes on weekdays and weekends on all four-existing routes this summer. Rockaway will get an express service running directly to and from Rockaway and Pier 11/Wall Street, meaning it will skip the Brooklyn Army Terminal stop. This express service will operate during weekday rush hour and on weekends, in addition to boats offering regular service. However, service from Brooklyn Army Terminal will also be increased by 20 percent on the Continued on page 6

A Fashion Faux Pas
First Communions, weddings and other dress-up things happen around now. And just like clockwork, just like the opening of the beaches, you get a seasonal reminder just how inept Rockaway men are when it comes to fashion. It’s no secret —though I, probably, should have tried to keep it one. The Rockaway Times is free thanks to our advertisers. All things considered, I prefer to keep them happy. And God knows, I try to patronize them. But sometimes I, uh, slip up. We landed a nice account, Karako Suits. You’ve passed their
store in Howard Beach or seen their TV commercials, I imagine. The lady who placed the ad said, "We will be running with you for a very long time.” Until she read my column. As my fellow writers will attest, feedback from readers can be scant. It’s nice to hear someone reads your crap. Usually. Now, I’m no fashion critic. I’m confessing upfront that dressing up means wearing dark sweats instead of light gray ones. Things haven’t changed since a few years back when a buddy was invited to a black-tie affair
718-439-0005
and he figured black jeans and a navy blue jacket were good enough. Unfortunately for him, the event was off the peninsula. I think someone handed him keys to park their car. I noted at the time, the shortest list in Rockaway would be the Men’s Best Dressed list. No matter the occasion, whether it’s a formal dinner or somebody’s wake or funeral, you’ll see men dressed like they’re going to play softball. You basically cannot be the worst dressed guy at anything. Somebody will always be more of a bum than you. In Rockaway, it’s much more radical and unsettling to dress like you know what you’re doing. People give you the look, like what, you think you’re somebody with that suit? They might count your suit buttons and snicker. You wonder if having four buttons makes you a guy in a 21st century leisure suit. Somebody at a dress-up event wearing torn dungarees gets the warmer welcome every time. Oh wait, I’m so out of fashion touch, they’re not called dungarees anymore. They’re jeans. I don’t know,
Page 5 man… I’d rather put on dunges than jeans any day. For dress up, men slide into corduroy jackets or khakis that a carpenter might wear and think nothing of it. The significant other says, you really have to buy some new clothes. I guess they’re just trying to make you shrug. When you get to whatever function, it’s about two minutes before you spot a guy in —ok, jeans—and maybe a shirt that somebody else bought for him. See? Look at that guy. Look at how he’s dressed. The significant other ignores this. And that guy, the one in jeans, is always happy! He never looks self-conscious. He owns the down and dirty look. Every man wants to be him. He doesn’t have to loosen his tie or take off the jacket to get comfortable; he already is. So a few years ago, I wrote about the glory of Rockaway shabbiness and soon got an email. The Karako lady. Out of the blue she says they’re going to hold off on running ads. Huh, why? “I think Rockaway is too beachy.” Wonder where she got that idea…. She either read my column or was invited to a Rockaway formal.

Rockaway route. There will also be increased staff at the ferry landings to assist passengers with lining up and boarding. NYC Ferry is hiring to cover some of the new positions that will be needed to meet these demands. They’re looking for captains, deckhands, customer service agents, ticketing, operations and more. Jobseekers can apply directly at ferry.nyc. “NYC Ferry’s overwhelming success in its first year of service indicates the need to make smart investments for the future now. This capital investment will support system improvements over the next five years, ultimately enhancing customer experience and strengthening the City’s waterfront infrastructure,” NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett said. With the success of the ferry so far and the announcement of these big improvements to come, Mayor de Blasio believes locals can feel a bit more secure
The Rockaway Times about the permanence of the ferry and he sees even more people riding in the future. “Folks in the Rockaways had temporary service after Sandy and one of the things that people constantly said to me was unless we believe in this, we’re not going to use it. And folks in the Rockaways have had very good reason to be skeptical about the role of government over many decades. What I’ve heard from a lot of people in the Rockaways is they now know this is really permanent, and they know it is the same cost as the subway fare and that has now allowed them to plan their life and use it much more than they ever could in the past. This is just beginning to be felt and I think more and more people are going to turn on to it.” The NYC Ferry service will continue to grow. The final two routes of the first phase of ferry service – Soundview and the Lower East Side – are expected to begin operating in late summer 2018, joining the four other already-established routes.

***** HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! And thanks to readers who sent in mom pics. See pages 21 and 38. ***** Ok, we were all complaining but we weren’t wrong! The lousy April weather we endured was historic. It was the coldest April since 1894. ***** Congratulations to the photographers who’ve had their entries selected to be in the next round of The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. These photos will be blown up to poster size and adorn the boardwalk, ferry landing, and Broad Channel. A few others, which didn’t crack the Top 30, but were loved anyway, will get the poster treatment, too (though not be eligible to win the Grand Prize of $500). Thanks to the NYC Parks Department, NYC Ferry, the Jamaica Bay Rockaway
Parks Conservancy, the Rockaway Artists Alliance and John Cori—this is much more than a contest—it’s a Rockaway event! ***** Almost time for outdoor hoops. Registration for the St. Francis Summer Classic is now open at www.sfdsparish.org. People who signed up to be members of the Bugalou Music Series are eligible for a discount of the summer league. Contact bugaloumusic@ gmail.com for more details. ***** Last week, we published a letter from Jane Deligiannis, saying that she found an old class ring a few year’s back. We’re happy to report that it got the attention of Kevin Sautner, the son of the late Jeanne Keely Sautner, who the ring belonged to. On Monday, May 7, Jeanne’s husband, Donald Sautner, stopped by the office to let us know that he was going to meet Jane to retrieve the ring. We’re glad to hear it fell into the right hands! ***** We print Local Color photos every week but we’ve got to put that on hold as we print Photo

Contest Finalists this week and next. We’ll do our best to get to the backlog and if you were thinking of sending in new ones, maybe hold off until we clear the deck. ***** Our next issue is May 17. Two days earlier, May 15, the summer parking rules go into effect. Saturday, May 19 starts at 12:01 a.m. and tickets have been put on cars minutes after the clock strikes midnight. Be sure to move your cars! ***** After last summer’s ferry service proved so popular (in other words, people were left at the dock because the boats were too small and ran too infrequently,) Hornblower announced that Rockaway will get bigger boats and more frequent service this time around. It’s great news that the City and Hornblower are recognizing how important good ferry service is. ***** There was a tiny thread of a Rockaway connection with the news that New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was accused of sexual assault by
four women. One of the four, Michelle Manning, volunteered in Rockaway after Sandy and wrote extensively about the failures of the Red Cross and other poststorm issues. ***** The Broad Channel American Legion Auxiliary will host an "Oldies But Goodies Night of Doo-Wop" on Saturday, June 9. Of course, you should come in your best ‘50s outfit. Limited tickets are available on a first come basis. There will be no tickets sold at the door! For more info or tickets, call Carol: 917-930-0546, Janet: 718-4833811 or Margaret: 917-7513698. Proceeds will support the Legion’s veterans programs. ***** Like kayaking? The new Community Boathouse on Beach 88th St. is now planning their free kayaking schedule for this summer. Individuals and community organizations interested in getting in on the fun as volunteers or participants should contact Rick Horan: 718-530-0040 or info@communityboathouse.org

Traffic Tribulations Dear Editor: I have been taking my mother down to the Saint John’s Episcopal Hospital clinic for wound care treatment weekly. The trip is a nightmare, literally. Between the way too many lights, DOT choking everything to single lanes, God awful road conditions and a feeble attempt to repair it, it takes me half an hour to schlepp a mere six miles. That's 12 MPH for all you math wizzes. Seriously, is there anybody out there who does not find this UNACCEPTABLE? Something needs to be done. JEOB
I'm writing to let you know that I gave the wrong person credit for the quote at the end of the article. It was not Jacques Cousteau who said, "In the end, we will conserve only what we love. We will only love what we understand. We will understand what we are taught," but rather Baba Dioum, a Senegalese poet. I would like to give credit where credit is due. Apologies. Keep up the amazing work! Heather Kramer

Misquote I would like to possibly retrieve Mishap this ring for my father. Thank you for your attention to this matter. CB 14: Pipeline Pile On, School and Shuttle Woes out of the question.” He also announced that he sent a letter to MTA NYC Transit President Andy Byford, officially inviting him to speak at the June 12 meeting to discuss subway concerns. Next on the agenda was public speaking. Of the 12 people who spoke, six expressed their disdain with the proposed expansion of the Williams-Transco Rockaway pipeline. Among those was Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) member, Jill Lauri, who stated, “After listening to Williams’ representatives at a CB 14’s Environmental Committee meeting, I’m convinced that Williams cannot be trusted. They have a poor track record, and bought out many local community groups with large sums of grant money. I ask those who accepted money to publicly disclose how much they have received.” Note, this information about Williams’ Rockaway Community Grant recipients can be found on their website: http://
By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Community Board soundly rejected the Williams-Transco Pipeline in dramatic fashion at Tuesday night’s monthly meeting at the Bayswater Jewish Center. Before the stunning turnabout, which occurred toward evening’s end, the meeting was already rife with drama as folks cried foul about the termination of Far Rockaway stops on the NYC Ferry Shuttle; the closing of special education preschool program, On Our Way Learning Center; the placement of homeless families, and the expansion of the pipeline. The meeting also included two announcements by CB 14’s District Manager, Jonathan Gaska, who said that permits for block parties and other street events must be submitted 90 days in advance of the proposed event. Gaska said, “If you’re now looking to get a permit for the month of June or the first two weeks in July, it’s
co.williams.com/communitystakeholder-relations/rockaway-community-grant-program/. Two representatives from the soon-to-be closed Far Rockaway-based special education preschool program, On Our Way Learning Center (OOWLC), made a passionate cry for folks to sign their petition and reach out to pols to expedite the state approval process for the new proposed school that will keep all current staff and students. For further info, see OOWLC’s online petition:change.org/p/education-for-all-in-the-rockaways. Nicolette Peters, a new community liaison for Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said that the assemblywoman is on top of the OOWLC issue and has urged the state to expedite the process to start the new program. They announced the addition of three new bigger boats; more frequent service during weekday rush hours, where boats will be arriving every 30 minutes; an express service that will run directly to and from Rockaway and Pier 11/Wall Street (skipping Brooklyn Army Terminal); an app offering real-time tracking; email alerts if a boat is off schedule, and the great news that a Far Rockaway school won the city-wide schools’ vessel-naming contest. Look out for “Ocean Queen Rockstar!” However, folks wanted answers about the east end ferry shuttle. CB 14 MEETING
Continued from Page 10 live near that street have a long walk to get home, some even paying for a taxi. Why can’t the shuttle at least go to Wavecrest, where they can at least transfer to the Q22? It’s unfair that east end ferry riders don’t have that convenience, and now that east end A-train service will be shut down for the summer, more people are going to need the shuttle.” Another board member spoke about the high price of parking at the lot opposite the ferry dock on Beach 108th Street. She said, “Currently, it’s $8 a day. That’s a lot of money for Rockaway. I thought there was some talk that it was going to be free?” Another board member questioned security on the ferry and the need for crowd control agents, especially during the summer. The representative answered, “The deck hands are trained for security. We don’t have specifically designated security officers.” The reps said they will look into the concerns mentioned
THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2018 and will hopefully come back with answers at the June CB 14 meeting. CB 14’s Health and Services Committee Chair Sonia Moises then spoke about what was revealed in their meeting with the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) regarding placement of homeless individuals and families in the east end. According to Moises, DHS claims that they are only proposing 962 homeless families for their planned location site on Beach 67th Street. The agency claims that these families were chosen because they listed their last place of residence as Rockaway. She explained, “DHS said they try to place families back in the last zip code they resided. For example, many homeless families with children already enrolled in a school are suddenly placed in neighborhoods outside of the school district they were formally attending. So to mitigate that, DHS tries to keep these families housed in the zip code of their previous home.” Also as for tallying
the total number of homeless people living in shelters on the peninsula, according to Moises, DHS said that it’s difficult as they do not include in their roster, families living in privately-owned hotels such as La Quinta in Far Rockaway. Hotels and other private entities are not required to disclose that information when first opening these homeless colonies. As for the certainty of 962 homeless families coming to Beach 67th Street, Moises said according to DHS, it has not been determined. Moises said she is going to invite DHS to CB 14’s June meeting to address residents’ concerns. Now for the drama. The Williams Pipeline. Dan Mundy, CB 14’s chair of the Environmental Committee, said due to insufficient information provided in the 797-page environmental impact report provided by Williams, the Committee decided to not take a position on the pipeline. However, in order to protect Rockaway’s reefs interests in case the pipeline expansion is approved, Mundy
Page 11 said, “We should make a motion requiring that Rockaway is guaranteed mitigation to protect the wealth of our reefs, so that the money does not go to Long Beach or elsewhere.” This set the crowded room in uproar with some board members shouting that requiring mitigation makes it sound as though the community was accepting the pipeline. One board member said, “If we support this motion, we may not be able to vote against the pipeline.” After Mundy withdrew the motion, the Board decided they were going to take a position on the pipeline and made a motion to vote on whether to reject it. Some members who were on the board of other local organizations that accepted Williams’ grant money in the past, had to publicly recuse themselves from the vote and state why. The final vote? Ulrich is All Ears on Community Funding By Rosemary McGuire
Peninsula improvements were on the agenda last Monday when several community-minded folks turned out, with ideas in hand, to present their wish-list for Councilman Eric Ulrich’s 2018 budget. Dog poop, bike racks and a little verbal sparring over painting a wall were a few of the more livelier topics at the first of three community engagement sessions Ulrich is holding. The office at 114-12 Beach Channel Drive was suggestion-central on May 7 for the handful of people that showed up, representing Far Rockaway, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor and Neponsit. Ulrich arrived, along with his daughter, Lily, who got right to her homework as Ulrich got to his work with the community. Ulrich started by explaining the genesis of community engagement sessions outside the realm of Participatory Budget-

ing (PB) and why he’s choosing to fund directly from his budget instead of through the citywide Participatory Budgeting program this year. “This streamlines the process and gets things done quicker,” Ulrich said. “We pulled out of PB because it placed so many rules and restrictions that made it

almost impossible to get the things that communities wanted. City agencies were becoming less and less cooperative. This gives us more flexibility now and avoids a long procurement process,” Ulrich said. Among the calls for increased signage for cyclists and pedestrians, and speed bumps and stop signs on Shore Front Parkway, Hank Iori, president of the Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA) tossed around a few ideas for bicycle racks on the beaches. He estimates the installation of two galvanized steel racks at each beach entryway would cost roughly $26,000 and would create a safer entry and exit to and from the beach. A request to increase the number of dog bag stations caused a bit more concern. Belle Harbor resident, Barbara Larkin pointed out that in light of the dog restrictions on the beach during the summer, newly placed dog bag stations may create confusion, while others made it clear that not everyone will welcome dog bag stations on their corners. Jill Lauri, Rockaway resident and member of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA), continued on the signage issues saying, “I’d like to see an increase in specialty signage on the peninsula. Something of an educational campaign, to educate people about respecting wildlife and controlling litter.” Litter was on the mind of Bridget Klapinski as well, who, in an attempt to corral flying debris on the boardwalk, requested that the existing wire garbage cans be swapped out for covered garbage cans. Ulrich concurred. Then came the plant vs. paint debate. Things heated up a bit when Daniel Ruscillo, member of Community Board 14, presented his wife, Linda’s idea to paint the boardwalk wall, which was met with fierce opposition by a Rockaway Park resident who’s actively involved with RCA’s planting initiative. The two went head-to-head for a bit, prompting Larkin to weigh in with, “I’d like to see fauna as opposed to paint.” She then
commended the RCA for the ‘beautiful job’ they’ve done on the plantings. “Let’s work together,” Robert Schwach, Ulrich's deputy chief of staff interjected. “We shouldn’t be afraid of new ideas.” Speculating that painting is likely prohibited, Ulrich decided to put it to rest until the feasibility of the idea was presented to the Parks Department. Next up were beach upgrade proposals, including a request to extend lifeguard coverage until 8 p.m., replacement of the 12 volleyball nets washed away by Hurricane Sandy, and a request to increase the number of
sunscreen dispensers along the boardwalk. Uneasy Shore Front Parkway residents, alarmed by the continued threat of speeding, proposed the possibility of speed bump or stop signs. “Some sort of traffic calming device is needed there,” Ulrich agreed. John Signorelli, 3rd executive vice president of the BHPOA advocated for an increase in solar panels on the peninsula, followed by an impassioned plea to extend the SANDHW11 project, currently in progress from Beach 116th Street to Beach 124th Street, to Beach 145th Street. In lieu of simple repaving, he requested complete reconstruction of the stretch, citing widespread deterioration sustained in Hurricane Sandy. Continued discussion on this proposal will take place at the upcoming BHPOA meeting with Department of Transportation (DOT) officials Continued on page 14

on May 15 at 7 p.m. at P.S./M.S 114Q. Ulrich said he’ll consider funding $600,000 toward the project pending cooperation with DOT. Bus congestion on Beach 116th Street and the idea of creating a transit hub to offload passengers in an effort to ease traffic, as well as the request for a LINK informational kiosk in Far Rockaway was proposed. Last up, Rick Horan of the new Community Boathouse on Beach 88th Street thanked Ulrich and Schwach for their assistance in securing 22 additional kayaks, expected to arrive this month, before moving on to request $5,000 in funding for Queens Railway, a non-profit organization advocating reactivating the old Rockaway Beach Rail Line (RBRL). “The money would be used to get the word out about the project, Horan said. Ulrich said he would consider the request upon submission of a proposal, but wasn’t so confident in its workability at this
point, stating, “It’s a lot harder and more complicated than it seems,â€? although agreeing with Horan that the revamping of JFK airport may reignite interest. While an exact dollar amount allocated for Rockaway is still up in the air, Ulrich's Director of Communications Natalia Kozikowska said, “Much like every year since taking office, Councilman Ulrich will ensure the Rockaways receive their fair share of city services and funding. The Councilman is proud of the many investments he’s made in the Rockaways and will continue to advocate for the community.â€? With that, the first community engagement session ended; just in time for a bedtime story for Lily. The final community engagement session is scheduled for Thursday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ozone Park District Office (93-06 101st Avenue). PRO-PIPELINE SUPPORT Last week, in a story about the April 26 Federal Energy Regulatory Commission meeting on the draft Environmental Statement for Williams’ proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE), much of the response was anti-pipeline. However, there are those who also showed support. Williams, the company behind the project that would include 23.5 miles of pipeline under the ocean from New Jersey to the Rockaway Lateral Project, explained the need for NESE. “Natural gas is a critical component of the mix of energy sources necessary to meet the region’s growing energy needs. National Grid estimates that with the added capacity provided by the project, natural gas could displace the equivalent of 3,005,797 gallons of heating oil, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 2.4 million tons per year. “Recent heating issues at New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residential complexes underscores the need for heating system upgrades. National Grid
is investing more than $200 million per year to convert their customers from oil to natural gas in New York City and Long Island. NESE is critical to make these conversions possible,” Williams said. Among those who support the project are the New York League of Conservation Voters, Laborers' International Union of North America, New York Building Congress, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, Evergreen North Brooklyn Business Exchange and Brooklyn Sen. Kevin Parker along with NYCHA residents. “We take all of those concerns seriously and are committed to working to address issues the best we can. We believe that the draft Environmental Impact Statement positively reflects our efforts to collaborate with stakeholders to design this project in an environmentally responsible manner,” Williams said. Public comments are being accepted through May 14. Search “Northeast Supply Enhancement Project” on www.ferc.gov to e-File your comments.

Paving the Way to a New Life— One Brick at a Time slated to break ground this summer. If all goes according to plan, House on the Rock, a tiny 20-year-old itinerant, Rockaway Beach church with the enormous dreams, and an in- non-denominational church, defatigable congregation, is will finally have a home to call finally getting its own home— its own by 2020, at 601 Barbados and they’re inviting the entire Avenue in Arverne. Facing some insurmountable peninsula in. ring more than 30 percent of his body with second and third degree burns and just 48-hours after the fire, Hurricane Sandy swept through, destroying their all their belongings and leaving their church and home in ruins. In a true test of faith, and a story of a resurrection of sorts, Pastor Patrylo was finally released from the burn unit two months later, propelling him to where he is today, crediting the love of his family and God for keeping him going. “What took place in 2012 began to change our perspective. When things get difficult, you then begin to see what really is inside of you. Behind all these tragedies, we found this great purpose. Dreams are important, but without hard work, they won’t get you anywhere, so for the last five years, I’ve been working with House on the Rock church to rebuild our group and Believe in Rockaway,” Patrylo said. House on the Rock’s story of devastation and tragedy made its way to Samaritan's Purse, an evangelical Christian humanitarian aid organization that provides aid to people in need as a key part of Christian missionary work. With $500,000 in seed money for a new space, they were off to a strong start, but it wasn’t enough. Determined not to let a lack of funds thwart their efforts, the pastor and his wife, Katherine, dug deep into their
own pockets, donating their entire retirement fund of $100,000 to close the financial gap and purchase the land. Believe in Rockaway Church and Community Center was finally becoming a reality. But they still need help, so they’re calling on local businesses and residents to partner with them through a fundraising effort with their Brick Engraving Campaign. Community members and business can support this project and help them pave the way to greatness, and join the dream by purchasing personalized engraved pavers. “I believe in Rockaway. My wife and I live in Rockaway, work in Rockaway and are raising our family, fourth generation, here in Rockaway and I know all of us here share a common interest in making our community better,” Patrylo said.
The Hot Rocks children’s band performed for the crowd.
For more than 20 years, House on the Rock has been a community minded church since its inception by Patrylo’s dad, Reverend Garry S. Patrylo Sr. Over the years, they’ve offered ministries for children, free music lessons, church youth groups, boy/girl scout type programs, summer camps, basketball workshops, beach events, food pantries, addiction ministries and an Easter Sunday boardwalk event that draws more than 400 attendees annually. “We’ve done all of this throughout the years without having our own facility,” Patrylo said. Bobby J Reminds Rockaway 'Summer's Almost Here’ By Katie McFadden
“Show no fear, spring is in the air, summer’s almost here.” After a long, cold winter, those lyrics expressed by Bobby J, also known as Robert Joseph, was just the reassurance Rockaway needed, that summer is just around the corner. Local hip hop and rap artist, Bobby J sent out a nice little reminder that summer is indeed on the way, when he dropped his “Breakfast Bar” about Rockaway on April 23. The tune for “Summer’s Almost Here (Rockaway Beach Summer Anthem)" may sound familiar as Bobby J raps to the beat of Q-Tip’s “Let’s Ride,” which came out in the late ‘90s, but for those who live locally, it’s the lyrics that really resonate as something familiar. With mentions of local summer bars like Connolly’s, The Wharf, Bungalow Bar, the Sugar Bowl and Healy’s, the two-minute

beat has you craving a frozen drink by the end. The short and sweet rap talks about a night on the town that includes a food stop at Pickles and Pies, and shout outs to some Rockaway notables like Ceddy Ced and DJ Teddy. “I really wanted to make something everybody in the
neighborhood could relate to and draw attention from people who may not normally like rap or hip hop. It’s a song I’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” Bobby J said. The short song was just a taste of what’s in store for Bobby J, and a good way to get the at-
tention of new local fans as he geared up to drop the first full single from his upcoming album. Every Monday morning, for the past few weeks, Bobby J has released videos featuring a short freestyle rap set to an already-established tune, which he calls “Breakfast Bars” on the Instagram app. He uses the app to market himself and keep his name out there. But on April 27, he released a single that will surely have people remembering his name, “Bobby.” However Bobby J’s name has been known around Rockaway and the rap scene for quite some time. The Rockaway Park resident says he started rapping when he was about 10 years old, and started to take it seriously when he was 14. For many years, he has been working with producer, Kwamé, a popular rapper in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, whose shortContinued on page 19

BOBBY J REMINDS ROCKAWAY
Continued from Page 18
lived rap career steered him in the direction of producing. Bobby J is just one of the many
artists Kwamé has worked with. Among them are big names like Mary J. Blige, the Pussycat Dolls, Method Man, Christina Aguilera and more. Bobby J was introduced to Kwamé by a mutual friend in high school, and from there, something big started to form. In 2008, Bobby J dropped his first big single, “Don’t Touch,” under the stage name, Beyond Belief. Bobby J says the catchy jam made its way to some TV and radio stations, and the YouTube video has more than 200,000 views, but the timing for major success wasn’t right. “I almost got a deal with Universal Republic Records with that song. There was a lot of interest in that record, but we were probably two years too early for that 200,000-view video to be a 500,000-view video instead,” he said. “The method of promoting that song at the time was still traditional. If we had waited two or three years, we would’ve had so many different avenues to promote it. When you’re an indie artist trying to get on Top 40 radio, and your competition is universal, you’re facing a monster you can’t win against. We had beer money and champagne dreams. Although it had traction and some success, we bled ourselves dry trying to promote it,” he said. Bobby J continued to put out music through 2012 under the name Beyond Belief. “I learned a whole lot about how the industry works and how records are promoted, but for a team of three to four people, we weren’t prepared for it. The experience left me
THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2018 jaded and frustrated,” he said. After his last song was released in April 2012, Bobby J took a break from putting music out. “I pretty much forgot why I was doing it in the first place. I make music because I love it and it’s fun and at the time, I lost sight of that. I never stopped making music, but I just stopped putting it out to the public,” he said. That was, until recently. Last year, Beyond Belief rebranded himself as Bobby J and started recording music with the aim of putting out a new album in 2018. Around April, he decided to start releasing music to the public again, in the form of “Breakfast Bars,” and using Instagram to promote himself. “There was a lull in me not releasing anything, but this year I made it my goal to put music out every week. It’s been a motivator knowing that people are looking forward to it every week. When I made the decision to start that, I said, if I don’t start this week, I’m never going to do it. Now I’m not stopping,” Bobby J said. The short freestyle raps and videos are leading up to something big for Bobby J. “I’ve really been focusing on finishing this new album. We’ve been working on it for a year and a half and over the past year, it started to come together. I finally started to feel like I had an album that represented who I was and it’s something that I’m really proud of.” Bobby J has a supportive team around him, including his brother, Eric Joseph, who directs and shoots Bobby’s music videos, his manager, Greg Pastore, Sean Aiken who helps manage and books gigs for Bobby, his producer, Kwamé and a plethora of local fans, old and new. “Summer’s almost here,” and so is Bobby J’s new album. He plans to drop the full album sometime this summer. If you’d like to check out Bobby J’s music, check out his YouTube channel at Youtube.com/c/ bobbyj. His music is also available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Soundcloud and more. For new material each week, including “Breakfast Bars,” be sure to follow “BobbyJFromRockaway” on Instagram.

Remembering a Surfer and a Soldier— 50 Years Later By Katie McFadden
Rockaway never forgets. And on Sunday, May 13, that will continue to ring true as friends, family and other community members will mark the 50th anniversary of the passing of a surfer, a soldier and an all-around great guy, John P. McGonigal, Jr., killed in the Vietnam War in 1968. Born on Halloween day in 1947, to John and Ruth McGonigal, John McGonigal, Jr. was a true Rockaway kid who spent most of his free time engaging in Rockaway’s most popular hobby—surfing. “We went to the beach one day around Beach 118th and we see these guys on the water, Pat Reen, Kenny and Wally Schreifels, Ernie Vohs and others. They were out there surfing,” Tom McGonical, John’s younger brother, by 13 months, recalled. “John and I devised a scheme to get boards of our own. We had to get $150 a piece to get boards, so we decided to ask this guy if we could spend the winter fixing his house. He needed the houses painted and a floor put in, so we said, sure, we know how to do it. We had no idea. I’m looking at John, and he’s looking at me, and John says, ‘Don’t say anything.’ So we’d work on weekends and after school and we’d paint the house. By April, the guy said we did a great job and he gave us $150 a piece for the whole winter. $300 for the winter. I think that’s considered slave labor now,” Tom joked. But it was just the right amount to get what they needed. “There were no surf shops in Rockaway at the time, so we had to go to Emilio’s Ski and Surf Shop in Forest Hills. Leaving Rockaway when you’re kid is like falling off the earth. We looked at a map and John said he knew where we were going. We took four different trains until we asked a cop where to go. We finally got there and we

We had to get up early to surf and John was always up before me, at 4 a.m. There’d be a group of eight to 10 of us. Back then it was illegal to surf. The cops would come and try to give us tickets and we’d always give the same name—John Doe,” Tom said. “John and I were very close. I didn’t spend any time away from him when we were growing up.” McGonigal atop Black Widow That was, until John McGoMountain in April 1968. nigal made the decision to were looking at the boards enlist in the U.S. Army. “They and we knew what we wanted—something that floated,” Tom said with a laugh. “Our next challenge was figuring out how to get these things home. Some lady looked at us on the subway platform and said, ‘Where are you going with those?’ We said we had to get home to Rockaway. She said, ‘There’s no waves in Rockaway.’” Having lived in Rockaway since toddlers, and being able to see the waves from their Beach 130th Street home, John McGonigal and his brother knew better. “The next day we went out with our wetsuits, had the draft back then and he which weren’t really made for knew he was probably going to surfing. We melted the wax have to go, but he wanted to with a hot pan and poured it serve his country. He also had onto our boards and we went a plan. He wanted to be a cop. out on the water with a few He figured he would join the guys. The first thing I said was, Military Police and he could ‘I have no idea how to turn this use that once he got out,” Tom thing around,’” Tom said. “It McGonigal said. “I’ll never took me three weeks to stand forget when he said the words, up on the board. It took John ‘I enlisted in the Army today.’ three hours. Ever since then, My father was calm. and was sent to Black Virgin Mountain in the Tay Ninh Provence of Vietnam. McGonigal was manning a .50 caliber machine on the night of May 13, 1968, when there was an assault attack on the firebase on top of the mountain. He sustained multiple fragmentation wounds fired from an enemy RPG. McGonigal, along with 23 other soldiers, were killed in the attack. He was 20 years old. “I remember the day vividly. There was a knock on the door and Father Bracken from St. Francis was there with the chaplain. We were first told that he was missing. Sometimes they just don’t know where a guy was. That wasn’t the case,” Tom said. "He was a great guy and and he had wonderful parents. Needless to say, they were pretty devastated about his loss," McGonigal's friend and fellow surfer, Dee McLean said. "News traveled pretty quick around the beach. Good news doesn’t travel that quick. Bad news does." “Those first few months were very tough. If it wasn’t for the community, I don’t know what we would’ve done. So many people stopped by the house, but not just right after. They kept coming," Tom said. "They weren’t going to let John’s sacrifice go unremembered.” And they still haven’t. Dee McLean has organized a ceremony to remember John on Sunday, May 13—50 years to the day since he was killed. At noon, all are welcome to join at John McGonigal’s tree at Memorial Circle on Beach 121st Street, where McLean and others will say some words about their old friend. They will then proceed to Beach 130th Street, where another tree is planted outside the SFDS rectory, in honor of McGonigal. “This is a milestone anniversary and the community and his friends will never forget him and never did forget him,” McLean said.

Moms Rule Mother’s Day has a long history. According to History.com, the Greeks and Romans had festivals honoring mothers, and England had celebrations during Lent to honor mothers. The American holiday can be traced back to Anna Jarvis from West Virginia, who around the time of the Civil War, started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs,” which helped mothers learn skills to raise their children. Ms. Jarvis then changed the focus of the club to “Mother’s Friendship Day,” where mothers of former Confederate and Union soldiers gathered together in order
to bring the country together. Jarvis then campaigned to have Mother’s Day become an official holiday. So the history of Mother’s Day is quite impressive. Jarvis really wanted to assist mothers and improve relations between groups that needed mediating. Ironically, after Mother’s Day became a holiday in 1914 with Woodrow Wilson signing a proclamation, Jarvis didn’t agree with the commercialization of the day, so she worked the rest of her life to repeal the holiday. I like the commercialization of the holiday. I am not going to
lie. I enjoy receiving gifts. I have gotten a new bicycle, in a town where you need a new bicycle every few years, usually because your children “borrow” your bike and it disappears. The said bike I am mentioning is gone… another Rockaway bike in the wind. I have received facial and massage gift certificates, another awesome gift. After many tears of being ambiguous with what I wanted, I now send emails of items I like to my husband and my daughters. Of course, the best gifts were the ones the children made in school. I worry that with everything going on in the world, will teachers stop working on these crafts? I had one on the refrigerator for many years, a poem my daughter wrote for me for Mother’s Day and one of the things that made me a great mom was while in the car, I allowed them to listen to their music! Something so simple was a thing they loved about me. Moms need this day to celebrate how hard we work. Since my own mother died at a young age, I often say to people, “My
The Rockaway Times mom never told me how difficult motherhood would be.” And being a mom in today’s day and age is even more difficult than when my mother was raising us. When we were kids, we played one sport a season. These kids today play multiple sports and play on multiple teams. Kids take dance lessons, travel with the dance team, they act in the Rockaway Theatre Company and take acting classes. All of the above take time and money. So to all the moms out there: I hope you get that manicure and pedicure gift certificate and I hope you get to go to the nail salon alone! I hope you get to go to the bathroom alone and without anyone calling your name, asking you where something is. I hope you get breakfast in bed. I hope you get a homemade card and/or gift from the kids. I hope you get to sleep a little later. I hope your husband surprises you with a cleaning lady while he takes you out for the day. Thanks to all the moms out there, especially those not with us anymore for showing us how to be the best moms we can be.

As you read this column, I will be in Portugal traveling with my best friend and daughter, Kayla. We planned this trip months ago when she was working very hard in school towards her nursing degree. Anyone who has a BS in Nursing knows how difficult and time consuming it can be to receive this degree. She has one more year to go and, God willing, she will be of service in the health industry. She is a kind, compassionate and brilliant woman. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I am so very proud to be her Mom. I am her biggest cheerleader. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for her happiness and success. This

mother/daughter trip is a gift for both of us. Blessed to have this time with her. As I travel throughout Portugal from north to south, I feel fortunate to spend Mother’s Day with Kayla in Fatima. Our Lady of Fatima is a big celebration on May 13 in Portugal. It is the day when the Blessed Mother appeared to three young children. I did not intentionally plan this stop, but it just so happens we are passing through on Mother’s Day. So, I will say a prayer for all mothers who have passed and for those who are still with us. Having lost my Mom when I was 26 years old, I try to car-
ry all my memories of her with me. A mother’s love is your first true love and forever stays with you. May you be blessed with beautiful memories and always be happy in good times and bad times. Choose to be happy. Choose to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. You are blessed and rich in the love you received from your Mom when you were born. Traveling is so interesting and fascinating to me. Experiencing the culture of the country, seeing the people, walking through history and truly immersing yourself in their way of life. It is a journey into a world much different than ours. We will meet new strangers and see places for the first time. You become very aware of your surroundings and are on guard for any intruders. Here at home, you are safe in your community. Living in Rockaway we know everyone and get to smile at each other. In another country, you are the stranger, the visitor, the DFD. You become more cautious and non-trusting. Born and raised in Brooklyn, I am confident I
Page 29 can handle almost anything. I also believe in the power of prayer so I will pray every day for our safety. The following is part of a beautiful poem from John O’Donohue: “When you travel, a new silence goes with you and if you listen, you will hear what your heart would love to say. A journey becomes a sacred thing: Make sure, before you go to take the time to bless your going forth, to free your heart of ballast so that the compass of your soul might direct you toward the territories of spirit where you will discover more of your hidden life, and the urgencies that deserve to claim you. May you travel in an awakened way, gathered wisely into your ground; that you may not waste the invitations which wait along the way to transform you. May you travel safely, arrive refreshed, and live your time away to its fullest; Return home more enriched, and free to balance the gift of days which call you.”

HEAT ADVISORY Now that summer is near, I thought today would be an appropriate day to talk about some dangers of exposure to hot weather like heat exhaustion and heat stroke. In order to avoid the dangers of heat exposure, there are some common sense recommendations such as scheduling outdoor activities during the cooler morning and evening hours, wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, drink plenty of fluids, but avoid fluids with high sugar content or alcohol, as these can cause dehydration. If you travel to a climate that is hot and dry, allow your body time to adjust
to the climate before you exert yourself during the midday hours. In addition, be aware that certain medications that may cause fluid loss, decrease sweating, or slow the heart rate may increase the risk of heat problems. These medications include many used to treat depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, and coughs and colds. Those most at risk for heat problems are the very young and elderly. Heat stroke is basically untreated heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion symptoms include pale, cool, clammy skin, profuse sweating, dizziness and
lightheadedness, and a core temperature between 100 and 104. Heat stroke symptoms include flushed, hot, dry skin, no sweating due to dehydration, core temperature above 104, fainting, confusion, coma, elevated or very low blood pressure, and rapid respiratory rate. Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke may present with nausea, flushing, headache, dizziness, weakness, extreme thirst, rapid heart rate, and muscle cramps. Among the cells in the body most susceptible to heat are brain cells. In addition, the heart must work harder to push blood to hot skin. Sweating cools the body because the evaporation of sweat causes the skin to cool but sweating also leads to further dehydration and loss of electrolytes and minerals that are vital to the body. As the humidity increases, the rate of evaporation of sweat decreases. While heat exhaustion can be treated without needing a hospital visit, heat stroke patients must be sent to the emergency room as intravenous fluids and other hospital treatments are
The Rockaway Times usually required. Basic treatment for heat exhaustion or heat stroke (while waiting for an ambulance) include removing the person from the heat, removing clothing to promote cooling, apply cold, wet cloths or ice to the skin, especially in the neck, armpit, and groin areas where large blood vessels are located, lie the person on their side to avoid aspiration, and avoid aspirin or Tylenol as they do not promote cooling. A person with heat exhaustion should be given cool sports drinks, but a person with heat stroke should only be given sips of water if they are conscious and alert. Despite aggressive treatment, heat stroke can damage multiple organs in the body and it can leave individuals with permanent neurological damage or cause death if not treated early enough. For more information go to www.cdc.gov/disasters/extreme heat/index.html or https://medlineplus.gov/ency/ article/000056.htm Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

BUGALOU WRAPPING YEAR 1 WITH GRAMMY WINNER AND KERRY KEARNEY, TOO
The Bugalou Concert Series will wrap up its first season on Saturday, May 19 at St. Francis de Sales with three-time Grammy winner Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, sponsored by the Bungalow Bar. Much as Joan Osborne is the singer's singer, Larry Campbell is the musician's musician. He is best known for his work with Bob Dylan as his musical director, lead guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist from 19972004. Shortly after parting with Dylan, he was asked by Levon Helm of The Band to join with him, and then spent the next eight years with him until Levon's death in 2012, earning Grammys for the albums, Dirt Farmer, Electric Dirt, and Ramble at the Ryman. It was during this period that he began to work regularly with his wife, Teresa Williams, who was also a part of the Levon Helm Band as a vocalist and guitarist. Following Levon's death, the band continued in various incarnations including The Midnight Ramble Band and The Dirt Farmer Band, before Larry and Teresa decided to focus on their own musical creations. Their eponymous debut, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams was released in 2015 and they have now followed up with Contraband Love. Larry Campbell began his professional journey playing
in New York clubs such as The Lone Star Cafe, City Limits, Rodeo Bar, and O'Lunney's in the late 70s and early 80s. During this period, he was the guitarist in the band of Rockaway's Greg Trooper, who passed away last year and who will be remembered and honored on this night. In the ‘80s and early ‘90s, he also played multiple instruments in the orchestras of Broadway plays including Alaska, Big River, and The Will Rogers Follies. In addition to his time with Bob Dylan and Levon Helm, Campbell has recorded and performed with a Who's Who of music including The Allman Brothers, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, BB King, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Van Morrison, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, KD Lang, Black Crowes, Little Feat, Hot Tuna, various incarnations of the Grateful Dead, Joan Osborne, and many others. He has been honored by the Americana Music Association as Instrumentalist of the Year multiple times and in 2008 received their Lifetime Achievement Award. The night will begin fittingly with one of Rockaway's most accomplished musicians, Kerry Kearney. His band for the evening will include special guest Michael Falzarano of Hot Tuna, so the musical fireworks will begin even before our headliners hit the stage. It will be a great evening and a great way to end the first year of Bugalou. Tickets are $50 and $40, and can be purchased via website: www.bugaloumusic. com or by email: bugaloumusic@gmail.com. Please visit facebook.com/bugaloumusic for daily postings of Youtube videos of Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams. Bugalou thanks you for your support this year and we hope for your support for this final show so that we can hopefully have Bugalou Year 2!

Charleston By Lou Pastina
Ok, so you decided to take the ferry, you pass the Battery, you get off the ferry and in front
of you is Water Street, Broad Street, Church Street, Exchange Street, New Street…. you’re in New York, right? Wrong! You’re in Charleston, South Carolina!! Wait, what? How can that be? It’s easy. You see, along with New York, there was Boston, Philadelphia and Charleston as the main cities that the British set up in their new world. And they built them all in the same way, in the same geographical settings and with sometimes, the same names. Charleston is a peninsula with two rivers running beside it and a great bay in front of it with forts on all sides (think NY) and bridges connecting the land on either side. Spooky, right? I just got back from a five-day trip to this American gem of a city, and I highly recommend it for a long weekend or midweek trip. Better to visit in the spring or fall because, guess what, it gets hot in the summer.
How hot? Well, consecutive 100 degree-days are not unheard of. And its nickname is the Low Country, because it’s below sea level. That means on high tides or full moons or heavy rains, it floods. No basements in low country, only a foot or two down and you are in sand. Sound familiar? And winters get cold. This ain’t Florida (about a threehour drive further south). So spring and fall are your best bets. What’s this city got going for it? Well for starters: food. The restaurants, to quote a friend, “are off the charts!” History, cobble stone streets with homes from the 1700s sporting very distinctive architectural details like oneroom wide homes, wrought iron railings, balconies, side doors. It’s absolutely beautiful and all walkable. Jazz music, nice little dinner clubs with saxophone led groups and the smell of Carolina jasmine takes you back, way back. Literally intoxicating. Take a tour. They have horsedrawn carriages night and day (no de Blasio here!!), they have walking tours, ghost tours, plantation tours, Fort Sumter tours, water tours, cocktail tours, free bus tours…. you name it, they got it. And did I mention churches? This place is known as the holy city because it boasts so many churches: Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Catholic, Jewish, and African American. Unfortunately, some nut shot up one of the churches a few years back. It was terrible. You know what the church members did? They forgave him. That’s love. Back in the day, Charleston was the most prosperous of the four colonial cities. Of course
Page 37
it was built on the back of West African slaves. Rice, or Carolina Gold as they called it was the leading crop before the Civil War. Very hard work, the technology to harvest that crop was actually brought over by the slaves themselves because it was a crop they knew well from home. After the war, those plantation owners found out that once you took free labor off the income statement, it was impossible to get any revenue to flow to the bottom line. It didn’t take long for the city to look for other means to support itself. How do you get around in this city? Well the best way is simply to walk. We found it to be safe and convenient to get around that way. They also have a free bus hop-on, hop-off bus. They have Uber too and it works quite well. They also have Pedi-cabs, and horse-drawn carriages. And they have ferries! It’s an hourand-a-half flight from Kennedy. Being there got me thinking (I know a dangerous thing), why can’t Rockaway have some of these things too? Think of it, a tourist takes a ferry to Rock-
away and they have no idea what to do when they get here. But when they get off, there could be tour buses or Pedicabs waiting to take them on tour. What tour you say? Well we’ve got our own history here too: the Boardwalk, Fort Tilden, Riis Park, the beach, Restaurant Row, bars, live music, art galleries, bungalows. No, the British didn’t set up shop here back in the 1700s, but we could learn a thing or two from Charleston. Check the place out, it’s worth the visit.

Art lovers, starting this weekend, watercolors will be in full bloom for the month of May at the Brooklyn Watercolor Society’s (BWS) show showcased by the Rockaway Artist Alliance (RAA) at their sTudio 7 Gallery. Not only will you be able to soak in the idyllic works of BWS’ 15 award-winning member artists, but you’ll also get to blossom your own painting skills at a plethora of workshops offered. BWS is a non-profit community arts organization of professional Brooklyn watercolor artists that was founded in 1972. Also, seize the opportunity to blend your love of May’s vibrant spring colors with watercolor at five workshops taught by BWS’ artists. (This would also be a unique Mother’s Day gift for mom!) Fifty-year veteran experimental watercolor, mixed media and oil pastel artist, Jeff Berman (coneyislandbabe@msn. com), will be teaching, “The Use of Watercolor Pencils,” this Sunday, May 13, 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. In Berman’s class, you will learn how to use watercolor pencils for drawing and creating accents — wet and/or dry — and then dissolving the pigment with a wet brush, painting in conjunction with watercolor pans. Rhea Sarah Kirstein (rheasarahkirstein@gmail.com), a self-described lover of everything water and plant life, especially flowers, will guide you
ing a watercolor artist, one has to have unique skills than those of oil or acrylic painters. The artist has to be able to anticipate the properties of water itself.” Some prestigious institutions BWS’ members have taught include the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, United Federation of Teachers, the Creative Center at University Settlement, the New York Horticultural Society, and the National Council of Jewish Women. BWS members exhibiting at the show are renowned artists: Jeff Berman, Eleanor Comins, Jerry Comins, Arlene Cornell, Bob Ferguson, Ellen Hoyt, Rhea Kirstein, Judy Kunhardt, Christian LeGars, Albert Massimi, Helena Neesemann, Loretta Poole, Stephanie Rauschenbusch, Mark Rabinovich, and Steve Yaeger. ROCKAWAY LITTLE LEAGUE RECAP
By Alison Kase
It was yet another exciting week in Rockaway Little League Boys’ Baseball and Girls’ Softball. We start with our youngest competitive division, Peewee Senior Boys’
playing Zwerling Ophthalmology Orioles, winning over Walsh Management Angels in their Saturday high-scoring game of 18-12. Bats sure were flying on Sunday and lots of fun was had by all. Rockaway Midshipmen Fearless Blue Jays had a busy week as Tuesday’s game ended in a 6-6 tie versus Zwerling Ophthalmology Orioles. This was followed by Friday’s 13-6 win over A.O.H. Division 21 Athletics. It was awesome to see great sportsmanship on display as Servpro of North West Brooklyn Pirates knocked off ABLE Discovery Center for Children’s Diamondbacks on Sunday. Also on Sunday, A.O.H. Division 21’s Athletics enjoyed their win over KB Security Rockies scoring 5-2. In Minor Boys' action, Empire Unlimited Angels won their Sunday game over Bartolli Chiropractic Athletics,

but don’t fret, as the Athletics won two of their three games this week. They beat American Legion Post #272 Cardinals on Tuesday, and won again on Saturday against the Allstate Rockaway Park Dodgers. Props to the American Legion Post #272 Cardinals, who on Friday responded with a win versus Storage Fox Diamondbacks. Belle Harbor Yacht Club Rockies enjoyed a great weekend of play, enjoying their Saturday win over Curran’s Meats Cubs in a score of 11-7, and a Sunday tied game with Class Act Photo Orioles, the game ending in 5-5. Speaking of game-ending ties, Girls’ Minor Softball— Rockaway WISH Clippers and Walsh Property Eagles finished in a 7-7 tie. Can’t wait to see these teams face each other again. In other Girls' Minor games, Elegante Restaurant and Pizzeria Firebirds enjoyed their win over the Laquilla Group Hornets scoring 7-2. In Major Girls’ Softball, the Graybeards Blazers enjoyed their Saturday 11-1 win over the Lola Star Pioneers. There was quite a bit of excitement in our mid-morning Saturday game, as the Knights of Columbus Wildcats pulled off a nail-biting one-run victory over Lana’s Loft Bobcats. There was spectacular pitching from Carly Intrabartolo,
coming in to relieve at the fifth inning with bases loaded to retire the side. This was followed by strong hitting with a bases-loaded clearing triple by Danielle Tansey. Big hits by Tamara McNeill and Kayla LaManti helped take a one-run lead into the sixth inning followed by Carly Intrabartolo closing out the game with strong defensive plays by Peyton Kalisak, Sofia Knoetgen, and Abby Tubridy. In the Major Boys’ Division, Currans Meats Cubs had an exciting 11-7 Tuesday win over the DriveSafe Auto Center Orioles. Delmar Pizza Reds had a super week winning both their games this week, winning 15-8 on Thursday versus L. Mahoney Real Estate Rockies and again on Saturday 14-5 versus Curran’s Meats Cubs. While Saturday’s game of Denis S. O’Connor Giants versus DriveSafe Auto Center Orioles could have ended in an Orioles’ forfeit, the boys instead played the game for just fun. In a show of great sportsmanship, the Giant’s Logan Kase played catcher for both teams. Note to RLL parents, please refer to your emailed newsletter on your team’s designated picture day and be sure to sign up for the upcoming Pitch, Hit, and Run competition on May 18.
