Art Takes Over Shore Front Parkway
By Katie McFadden Daffodils and tulips aren’t the only thing popping up and brightening up the peninsula this spring. Random works of art have mysteriously started to appear along Shore Front Parkway. The new additions are part of an extensive sculpture exhibit that will call Rockaway home over the summer. From a tail-splashing whale to a roller coaster tribute to Rockaway’s history to a chain-link heart and beyond, visitors will have plenty of new art to see this summer as part of the 14 Sculptors on the Rock exhibit. Rockaway res-
idents, Esther Grillo and Christina Jorge are the masterminds behind the project, which will feature some of their own work, along with 14 other artists, for a 17-piece display spanning a mileand-a-half area adjacent to the boardwalk and Shore Front Parkway. Grillo and Jorge are members of 14 Sculptors Inc., a Manhattan-based art group that has provided artists with locations to display their work since 1973. This nonprofit organization, under the NY Foundation for the Arts, called a gallery in SoHo home for about 25 years, but now functions through a virtual gallery and sets up exhibits in public places across the city. Rockaway is their latest public gallery, but it’s not the first time they’ve brought art to the peninsula. Both Grillo and Jorge have long been involved in the art culture of Rockaway. Some may know Grillo for her work on the bus stop murals along Shore Front Parkway and the Roxbury 9/11 Memorial. Jorge was heavily involved with the Rockaway Artists Alliance,

having obtained several grants for the organization, establishing educational programs like camp kidSmART and having served as vice president. Both previously worked together on a 14 Sculptors exhibit in Highbridge Park in Manhattan and they wanted to bring a splash of art to the place they live. Grillo says 14 Sculptors Inc. first brought an exhibition to Fort Tilden about 20 years ago. “This will be the second major exhibition that 14 Sculptors has brought to the Rockaways. We really pushed for this because we’re trying hard to make Rockaway the best it can be and to bring people from all over the boroughs, the country and the world to Rockaway to explore this jewel that has been hidden for so long,” Grillo said. “We really want people to have an appreciation for the arts and to change the perception of those who are unaware of the beauty of Rockaway. Rockaway is undergoing a renaissance and this is part of the recovery after Sandy and it’s

a celebration of the beauty and spirit of the area,” Jorge said. About 13 months ago, Grillo and Jorge collaborated with the Department of Parks and Recreation to start bringing this idea to life. They applied for grants to fund the project and received backing from the Queens Council on the Arts, the NY Foundation for the Arts, the Partnership for Parks and the Puffin Foundation. They also decided to span the exhibit from Beach 74th to Beach 108th Street along Shore Front Parkway due to its central location on the peninsula. “We wanted those on both the east and west ends to have access to this public art,” Jorge said. They also had the tough job of seeking out artists that could capture the beauty and spirit of Rockaway with their pieces. They wound up choosing 16 artists for the project. Some are newbies, some highly experienced, some are locals, and others from all over. “We reached Continued on page 3

ART TAKES
Continued from Page 2 out to a diverse group of artists from all over. We felt it was important to bring in artists from the area and beyond,” Jorge said. “We like to give different artists opportunities to display their work because exhibiting sculpture is very difficult. We wanted to bring in artists from 14 Sculptors and others that were recommended so that they could display their art in a public space,” Grillo said. “We not only have diversity among our artists, but diversity of medium as well. There’s everything from metal to wood, resin, acrylic, carved work, upcycled material and more,” Jorge said. Both Grillo and Jorge’s works are among the 17 pieces. Grillo’s “Rock Relics” incorporates pieces of Rockaway’s history including a piece of the actual chain from the Playland rollercoaster, Stars of David from the Ohab Zedek Synagogue, and pieces of the old wooden boardwalk. Jorge’s piece, “The Last Mermaid” incorporates upcycled material, like plastic bags and bottles, to

The other artists include Herb Rosenberg, Stan Squirewell, Bibiana Huang Matheis, Carl Rattner, Allan Cyprys, Siena Gillann Porta, Dan Bergman, Anne Stanner, Bayete Ross Smith, Febrications, Chuck von Schmidt, Sui Park, and Carmen and Laura Frank. Residents got a sneak peak at some of the work as it started being installed last week. The works peaked the curiosity of man and there were initial mixed reviews. “We wanted people to have an appreciation for different types of work. Some pieces, people will love, and others they won’t, just like some like Picasso and others prefer Rembrandt," Jorge said. “That’s what we were hoping to do. We wanted the art to stimulate interest and start conversations,” Grillo said. The pieces will continue to be installed over the next few weeks, just in time for the opening celebration event on Saturday, June 3. Details of the opening are still in the works, but the event will be held at 12:30 p.m.
at the Beach 94th Street Plaza. The opening won’t be the only big event in coordination with the exhibit. There will be various programs held throughout its end run on October 9, when the pieces will be removed. Some of the events include bike tours, arts and crafts, hip hop dancing, yoga, sunset photography, talks on Rockaway’s history from historians like James Supple and Marty Nislick, health and wellness programs and much more. “As a strong believer in education, I wanted to have a calen-

dar of different events that are connected to this exhibit,” Jorge said. A full calendar will be available as the events are established and will be accessible at www.14Sculptors.com or by calling 718-945-3131. “This exhibit is going to be an exciting way to celebrate all the good new things in Rockaway, like the boardwalk being finished and the ferry. We’re excited to bring art to our own backyard that will celebrate the beauty and spirit of Rockaway,” Jorge said.

College Culture The son who will remain nameless returned home, his first year in college complete. He spent the first semester in Ireland where the Crack was grand. It’s actually spelled – Craic – but is said the same way as crack so it can be a little jarring to hear about all the craic your son had. He’d lost a bit of weight in Ireland which confused me even more about this craic stuff. Craic sounded like crack and with him looking like a leprechaun skeleton, it looked like crack to me. But as usual, I was mistaken. His bony appearance was just commentary on the Irish cuisine. Anyway, there are apparently six levels of craic. Good craic means you had a fun night out. Nothing crazy, just a good time. Mighty craic is another level up, there might
even be a moment that will be retold through the years. Savage craic means everyone was in top form and the Guinness was plentiful and quick to disappear. Deadly craic – which right away makes you not want details – is a rip-roaring time, somehow a step above savage but just below the ultimate: the craic was ninety. The craic was ninety means everything was nirvana, amazing, couldn’t be topped and is immediately enshrined in the nighttime hall of fame. That’s good craic but that’s only five. The sixth? Minus craic. The night just went south. You would’ve been better off standing in line in Macy’s behind someone with a pile of returns. In Ireland he got food poisoning, caught a cold in a bog, and blushed his way through the semester as curse words were sprinkled into every conversation including in class and at dining room tables in
the homes of friends he had made. He got to climb on ancient ruins, visit London, and tour the Guinness factory. All in all, it was good craic. But he did not shoot a gun. That’s what he did in North Carolina, where he spent the most recent semester on the craic College tour. His friends in Ireland wanted him to experience Irish life as they know it. But other than the steady f-bombs (and another word that everybody hates) the life across the ocean didn’t seem all that different than the Rockaway experience. Likewise, his new downhome friends wanted him to experience the south. And in the south it’s guns, NASCAR, and dip, which is some kind of cousin of chewing tobacco. So basically it took him going down south to be in a foreign country. Guns? Yeah, when his North Carolina crew found out he’d never shot a gun they said, let’s go. They piled into a

car – I don’t think it was a monster truck or El Camino – and drove off campus to an open field not far away. They pulled out some guns and said, “Go ahead, shoot that tree.” Kind of mind-boggling. I mean you can turn down a drink, but if somebody with a gun tells you to shoot a gun, you'll probably do it. The nameless one fired away. He said it was kind of awesome. This is gonna take some getting used to for the tuition-paying parents. The south is a different world. I had to check the course catalog again wondering if the college was offering advanced degrees in duct tape and extension cords. Anyway, it’s a year in the books. I’m not sure which place he found more craic, but at least he’s no longer scary skinny. My guess is he’d move to Ireland permanently If they ever get a Waffle House and Chick-fil-A.

the meeting!
***** The St. Camillus schoolyard at Beach 100th and Shore Front Parkway is a great spot for various venues. The Irish Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday (June 3-4). And then on Friday, July 7 the FDNY boxing night is back. ***** The Ferry Guy aka Joe Hartigan isn’t quite satisfied that the ferry is here. He wants to make sure it stays and even though the mayor declared it “permanent,” and we have it on tape, Joe wants to make sure ridership stays strong. He makes contacts with businesses and event planners in lower Manhattan and Red Hook, Brooklyn and lets them know that the ferry would be useful to them, too. Crowds heading from Long Island, for instance, can get to those places by the Rockaway ferry. ***** Happy Birthday to Frances Abbracciamento! The remarkable and spry-as-ever Frances turned 104 this week. If you’re counting, she was born in 1913! ***** Stats say the Rockaway ferry saw 11,000 riders in its first week. We figure, even in the off-season, tourists (once they learn about the ferry) will be a huge boost to ridership. They can get a waterfront tour of New York harbor and Coney Island and Rockaway for $2.75. ***** The Belle Harbor Property Owners Association is holding a meeting on Tuesday, May 16 at PS 114 at 7 p.m. It should be a good one as Borough President Melinda Katz will be on hand to discuss what’s going on in Queens and Rockaway in particular. Deputy Inspector Janice Holmes from the 100th Precinct will also attend. By the way, the BHPOA is a vital organization for the west end. Feel free to pay your dues at
***** Still no word on the Riis Park Pitch-n-Putt golf course. We heard they’d picked a vendor to operate the course but when we asked for official word we got a “nothing new.” So you know what we know. ***** The official beach opening occurs on Friday, May 26, the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. The concessions, however, don’t want to wait that long. The boardwalk fun starts the week before on Friday, May 19. ***** We’re happy to let you know that Arlene Cornell will be exhibiting her newest paintings “Landscapes and Beyond” in a solo show at the RAA gallery in Fort Tilden for two weekends, May 20-21 and May 27-28 from noon to 5 p.m. ***** On Tuesday, a woman on Facebook claimed that she had tried to park on Beach Channel Drive around the ferry landing at Beach 108th Street and a woman from the ferry parking lot ran to her and said she was going to receive a pre-ticket as a warning because the city plans to eliminate street parking in the area from Monday to Friday. This would mean drivers would have to utilize the $8 a day parking lot. We reached out to the DOT who said no such changes are taking place, but stay vigilant and beware of scammers who may force you into paying for the lot. Currently, the only limitations are alternate side parking on Thursdays and Fridays. ***** New York City tracks dog names through licensing. Max, a perennial leader, is edged out by Bella as the Number 1 dog name. Coco, Rocky and Charlie were popular, too. Twenty-one people have dogs named John. Twenty-three dogs are named Mary. Five dogs are named Cat. We know of one German Shepherd in town named Kitty.

Parking Wars Dominate CB 14
By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Rangers game against the Ottawa Senators this past Tuesday evening, May 9, did not deter droves of people from attending Community Board 14’s (CB 14) monthly meeting. However, with defenses and offenses thrown like hockey pucks across the room about adding parking and bicycle lanes on Shore Front Parkway, it was
definitely an evening of intense action. (For those who missed it, the Rangers lost 6-4, ending their season). However, before we get into the intense drama, here are a few goals that were won without pushback. First off, CB14 unanimously agreed to endorse the street renaming of a section of Broad Channel’s (BC) Church Road, honoring the 100th anniversary of the death of BC

Volunteer Fire Department’s chief, Christian Hoobs (pronounced Hubs). According to Edwin Wilmarth, chief of operations and a 49-year veteran of the BC Fire Department, Hoobs, born in 1917, was one of the department’s founders, who also built the local Catholic church and ran many businesses in the area. “He is such an important historical and inspirational figure in our community, and unfortunately, to this day, he is the only person we lost due to a fire in over a century. Naming a street after him is a no-brainer. Hoobs more than deserves this recognition for his work towards elevating and building up the BC community,” Wilmarth said. Next, CB 14 agreed (not unanimously as there were a few abstentions) to request traffic cameras at local Catholic schools, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy on Beach 84th Street and St. Camillus Catholic Academy on Beach 99th Street. According to NYC law, speed traffic cameras must be placed 1/4-mile from the front door of a school. The cameras are placed in school zones to photograph speeding vehicles, and can be operated from an hour before the school day to an hour after it, as well as from 30 minutes before a night or weekend activity to 30 minutes after it. This includes vacation times, when classes and activities may still be going on inside the facility. So be aware, if you commit a violation in a school zone, you can get a $50 speeding ticket in the mail. During public speaking, in a one-minute bullet, Dan Guarino, former Rockaway Times Reporter and Wave Newspaper Associate Editor, active Rockaway Artists Alliance board member, (and the list goes on), stepped up again to announce his bid to run for District 32 City Council against Councilman
Eric Ulrich. “I have lived in Rockaway for over 35 years, actively advocating for our peninsula. I know what we need, and with your support, Rockaway will soar!” Guarino said. Now for the action…Parking, parking, parking… Though in their last meeting, CB 14 agreed to not support the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) plan to add metered perpendicular parking on the south side of Shore Front Parkway, folks came out to protest. Edwin Williams, president of the Harbour Pointe II Arverne Homeowner’s Association said, “We were not invited to that last meeting. Shore Front Parkway is an important throughway for Arverne By The Sea residents. How could the Rockaway Beach Civic Association dictate what we need, without consulting us?” CB 14 board member and president of Rockaway Beach Civic Association, John Cori, responded, “We sent out information to everyone about the meeting on our mailing list. We posted on the Facebook page, “Friends of Rockaway Beach,” we exhausted every avenue to reach out to everyone concerned and invested in this important issue.” As Williams and Cori, along with other members of CB 14 jostled about the district lines of Rockaway Beach and Arverne, a young man in the back, who will remain unnamed, kept shouting out, “Liar. Liar. Rockaway Beach does not include Beach 72nd in Arverne.” The board discussed revisiting the parking issue, but voted to not revisit it, and the decision to not add parking remains. As for adding a bike lane on Shore Front Parkway, folks on each side were adamant. However, CB 14, though divided, decided to add the bike lanes. What an intense night!

New Combrr App is Nirvana for Beachgoers & Local Eateries By Kami-Leigh Agard
Lazing at the beach, hungry, but don’t want to get up? Beach 97th Street City Sticks Parlor concessionaires and chefs at local Edgemere Farm’s Cowboy Corral, Justin Harter and Matt Blance, have developed Combrr, a mobile food delivery app, where beachcombers can order food from a Rockaway eatery and have it delivered right on the beach. Rockaway Park resident, Blance, an avid surfer and self-described, “natural born fish,” originally from Sydney, Australia, grew up on the beach and found himself back on the beach in Rockaway. “From both living and running eateries, Anna Bow and City Sticks here in Rockaway, for a while, Justin and I bounced around the idea about creating an app, where beachgoers can order food and have it directly delivered to them as they basked on the sand. “Finally we did it. We spent a year creating the technology, mainly focusing on how to en-

hance folks’ Rockaway Beach experience and also boost business for local eateries,” Blance said. According to Blance, local and down for the day beachcombers can just download the app on their website, combrr.com, drop a pin and selfie photo of what they look like, make a selection from the menus of local
restaurants signed up, and of course notate their location on the beach. As of press time, local restaurants already signed up are Peruvian rotisserie, Chicks to Go, West Indian restaurant, Goodys, Breezy’s BBQ, Beach 106th Street concession, Caracas and Mexican restaurant, Pico.
“We want more restaurants to sign up as Combrr will be a game changer for them, especially for those that aren’t on the boardwalk. They will be able to reach a diverse clientele just with this app. “Combrr is an ideal convenience for people who just want to relax and enjoy the beach, while sampling the wonderful eclectic cuisine Rockaway has to offer, without having to hustle around looking for something to eat and queue up in long lines,” Blance said. Beachcombers can order food and nonalcoholic beverages on Combrr. There is a flat delivery fee with optional tipping. Local eateries looking to jump into the action can sign up at combrr.com. “Any restaurant that wants to get involved, feel free to contact us. All they have to do is accept the orders once they come in,” Blance said. A mere three weeks away, Combrr officially launches in iPhones on Memorial Day weekend.

A Gift to the Harbor Light

By Katie McFadden
When the beloved Harbor Light restaurant finally reopens, it will have some very special items paying homage to the late Charlie Heeran, on its walls due to a tremendous effort by fellow rugby alumni, and the US Military. Charlie Heeran was one of the many Rockaway residents killed on September 11, 2001. Heeran had attended Xavier High School and the University of Scranton, where he played rugby for both, so it was no surprise that Xavier and Scranton memorabilia had hung in the old Harbor Light, owned by the Heeran family. Additionally, after 9/11, fellow Scranton Rugby alum, Marine James T. Martin (aka Sharky) was fighting the war in Afghanistan in 2004. Kevin Phelps, another friend of Heeran, reached out to Martin and asked him if he could put decals in memory of Heeran on missiles, to which Martin obliged, and took it a step further. “During that particular deployment, Sharky had two flags flown in memory of Charlie "Tuna' Heeran and Michael "Stitch" Costello (another Scranton graduate who perished in the towers). Sharky sent the flags to me for distribution to the families in New York and Tennessee. Additionally, I shipped a series of large Norseman decals to Sharky who placed them on bombs being deployed from Harriers and the USS Wasp. Pilot LTC. JR Lundy delivered the first round to the Taliban,” Phelps said.
Phelps gave the flag, along with a certificate, to the Heeran family, who hung it up in the Harbor Light. However, the school memorabilia, the flag and the certificate, were all destroyed when the Harbor Light went up in flames on October 29, 2012, the night of Hurricane Sandy. With construction of the Harbor Light being close to finished, Heeran’s fellow alumni wanted to step up to the plate and replace what was lost. “I thought it would be nice to give the Heerans some Scranton Rugby memorabilia to put up in the restaurant since they lost everything,” Brendan Smith, of Breezy Point, who also attended Xavier and Scranton, said. Smith reached out the coach at Scranton, who was more than willing to help with the effort and Smith learned that Phelps also had something to give to the Heerans. After Hurricane Sandy, in December 2012, Pilot Capt. JM Thompson delivered another series of Norsemen decal-covered bombs with Heeran’s name to the enemy. Martin had once again been deployed to Afghanistan. On January 19, 2013, he flew another flag over Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan, in Heeran’s memory. He then sent the new flag and another certificate to Phelps so that he could pass it along to the Heeran family. Phelps and Smith decided that the April 2017 Alumni Weekend for the University of Scranton Norsemen, would be the perContinued on page 15

Fix Community Board Dear Editor: The Community Board, while advisory in nature, should serve as a forum for community debate and consensus building, not merely a rubber stamp for City agencies. Towards that end, I have two ideas that should lead to better debate and decision-making, 1.) Get rid of the requirement to sign-up in advance for public speaking. Most residents who attend Board meetings go there to listen and learn, not make canned statements. The requirement to sign up in advance marginalizes those peo-
ple who may have a question or comment which discourages public discourse and limits the conversation. 2.) Don't vote on important issues until you hear all sides. In January CB 14 voted 2-1 to support Select Bus Service (SBS) after only hearing the Department of Transportation's (DOT) side of the story. Two months later the Board invited the Queens Public Transit Committee's (QPTC) to present the other side of the story. The vote that followed was almost unanimously against SBS. Hooray, right? Not so fast. Last month a special Board meeting in Bayswater discussed the critical issue of re-zoning downtown Far Rockaway which included plans for two 15-story buildings. NYC Economic Development Corp (EDC) did an hour-long presentation selling the idea while residents were given just one-minute to speak. Worse, the Bayswater Civic Association was not allowed to formally present
The Rockaway Times
their strong objections and suggestions for improvement. Predictably the Board overwhelmingly voted to support the City's plan. Recently DOT made two presentations regarding Shore Front Parkway (SFP) “improvements.” The Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) was allowed a brief rebuttal, but it narrowly focused on two issues and presented just one point of view. Unfortunately, the QPTC nor any other "pro-transportation" group was invited to advocate for more efficient use of SFP including the restoration of the two lanes removed by DOT and a more reasonable 30 mph speed limit. The community deserves to hear from transportation experts with innovative ideas such as smart traffic lights, flashing crosswalk lights and other technology that will help cars and pedestrians coexist safely and efficiently. If incomplete and flawed information leads to poor decisions, why do we keep doing
it? Board members are volunteers who deserve all the information necessary to make good decisions. So why then are they continually denied the opportunity to hear both sides of the story? Do you wonder about that too? Rick Horan
Blasts Professors Dear Editor: Please print this letter sent to Betty Rosa, Chancellor NYS Board of Regents. Dear Chancellor Rosa: The NY Post reported last week that CUNY professors would be defying their responsibilities to protest politics on May Day, Monday May 1. The news item quoted the president of CUNY's Professional Staff Congress, Barbara Bowen, urging fellow instructors to “teach resistance” by “integrating into our classes an examination of Trump’s policies as they are relevant to your subject, whether it be biology, finance, nursing or history." Continued from Page 14 Don't you think Madame Chancellor that curriculum re-development on an ad hoc basis is a bit beyond the responsibilities of NY educators? And, Madame Chancellor, should New York's educational system be run by a class of 'banana-republic' political hacks in which politics trumps a science education, a fine arts education, a medical education, or even a liberal arts education? In our 'Excelsior/Ever Upward' state, as Governor Cuomo likes to say, NY State families and students alike take on great financial obligations to educate themselves through CUNY & SUNY to improve their own careers and naturally to improve all society. They are being cheated by these professors. I ask you Madame Chancellor, to investigate and then, if true, prosecute these professors to the fullest extent of state policy. Thank you. Pete Stubben

Enjoying Bridges Dear Peter Mahon: Pete, your column regarding "Luddites" reminded me of an old "one box" cartoon (I think from the New Yorker). It was a cartoon of a woman at a desk wearing an operator style headset with a microphone in front of her. She was smoking up a storm with a pile of used cigarettes in the ash tray and she appeared to be nervously shaking. At the bottom of the cartoon was the following: "At the tone, the time will be 10:02 and ten seconds. At the tone the time will be 10:02 and twenty seconds. At the tone...". Another source of amusement I found was Woody Allens' old skit about the elevator getting even with him for punching the toaster. If you have a chance, it's five minutes well spent for a good chuckle. Enjoy your column. Keep 'em coming! Shaun Reen

For the past four years, a senior on the team has received an award in honor of Charlie Heeran, at this event, so Heeran’s memory has constantly been kept alive. On Friday, April 28, Charlie Heeran’s sisters were given the new items to hang once the Harbor Light is open. “We had the hon-

We also signed a Scranton Rugby jersey, which I will give them after we get it framed,” Smith said. Smith and Phelps are excited to see the items return home. “I can't wait for Harbor Light to reopen,” Smith said.

So you’ve decided to take the mid-morning ferry into Manhattan to tool around and enjoy a spring day in lower New York. But what to do? Where to go? Where to eat? Don’t worry I got you covered, here are some ideas! The ferry leaves you off at the foot of Wall Street on Pier 11. If you simply walked up Wall Street to Broadway, you would have a successful day! You’ll notice that you are walking uphill and as you do, you probably won’t realize that you are walking on landfill until you get to Pearl Street that was the eastern boarder of NY in the early days. The Tontine House was at the corner and was at the heart of the commercial, political and social things going on in the colonial days. When you get to the corner of Pearl and Wall, if you look right about three doors in, you'll see the Full Shilling Bar, a good place for a final beer on your way back. At Wall and Williams Street you have a couple of things to look at. First, the old Bank of New York Building, which now houses the Museum of Finance, is worth a visit for its display on Hamilton. Across the street is the old Merchants Exchange built after the fire of 1835 and now a Cipriani’s, it’s a very cool structure and there is a bar on the second floor overlooking Wall Street, and is really nice late in the
day. Continue up Wall toward Broad Street and you come to Federal Hall, the first Capital Building of the young republic. Definitely climb the stairs and look out at the New York Stock Exchange across the street, it’s a cool view and a good spot for pictures. Then go inside, the exhibits are worth the time. Come back out the front and walk across the street to the JP Morgan office where he ruled the world. On the side of the building look for the indentations on the sides of the wall. Those were from a bomb that blew up in 1920, supposedly by anarchists, although the crime was never solved, and in honor of those that lost their lives, the wall was intentionally left like that. Continue to walk up Wall Street to Trinity Church where you can see Hamilton and Fulton (the inventor of the Steam Engine) gravesites in the cemetery on the Rector Street side of the church. Slip inside the church for some quiet reflection, but then go down the sides in back of the altar for some older graves too. If you walk outside around the back, you will not be able to walk across the bridge because Trinity demolished the building on the other side and is rebuilding it. It’s pretty interesting to see a bridge that goes to nowhere! About now you should be hungry and thirsty, so let’s Continued on page 19

find a few places. Walk up Church Street to Liberty and go in the new Westfield Shopping Center, the third floor has an Eataly, and you have plenty of choices. Downstairs in the basement you can get to the Oculus too. If you want something more interesting, walk a little further up Church and make a right on Trinity Place to Trinity Place Bar & Restaurant. Note the huge vault, you are actually in an old bank. That’s not the only place that has these huge vaults in a bar or restaurant downtown – Capital Grille on Nassau Street and Bobby Vans on Broad Street both have them too, but you have to go downstairs in both places. If you prefer a simple burger and beer, the Malt House on Maiden Lane, east of Broadway, is pretty good. And if you prefer more of a party atmosphere, go to Stone Street. You can get there by walking down Broad Street to Fraunces Tav-
THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2017 ern and making a left. When you get behind 85 Broad Street make another left and Stone Street sits right behind the old Goldman Sachs building at 85 Broad Street. If it’s time to head back, walk around to Pearl Street and follow the curve past more old time bars ‘til you get to Wall Street. There you can make a right and head back to the pier, or slip across the street for one more before the ride home at the Full Shilling. The ferry at the foot of Wall awaits to sail you home. Not a bad day! Hope you enjoy!

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Diabetes and Complications Diabetes mellitus is a common disease with multiple complications. The most common neurologic symptom among patients with diabetes is a distal (hands and feet, or farthest from the heart), symmetric polyneuropathy, or peripheral neuropathy. This complication is estimated to affect between 10 and 50 percent of patients with diabetes. A minority of patients with neuropathy will be symptomatic and will have either positive symptoms (burning, tingling) or negative symptoms (numbness, weakness). The
human body has three types of nerve systems – sensory (controls the ability to feel and sense things like cold or heat), motor (controls movement), and autonomic (controls automatic functions like digestion, respiration, etc.). Of the three, diabetes most commonly affects the sensory nerves causing burning, numbness, or tingling of the feet or hands. But it can attack the motor nerves causing weakness or paralysis or the autonomic nerves, most commonly causing a condition called gastroparesis, which negatively affects di-

gestion and the passage of food through the gut. Primary care practitioners can easily screen patients for diabetic neuropathy. The key elements of screening include the patient’s history, physical examination, and sensory assessment. Sensory screening can include whether the patient can feel a pinprick or sense vibration using a tuning fork. Lab testing can be used to identify other causes of neuropathy. For example, a low Vitamin B12 level may cause neuropathy and should be suspected in someone taking metformin and in someone who has had bariatric surgery or has a malabsorption syndrome. Multiple myeloma, a disease of the bone marrow, may often initially present with symptoms of a peripheral neuropathy, and may be diagnosed with a blood test. Treatment of diabetic neuropathy is usually guided by other diseases or conditions the patient may have. For example, amitriptyline, used to treat severe depression and other psychiatric illnesses, may be very helpful but may not be tolerated
The Rockaway Times by elderly patients, those with electrical heart conduction disorders, or at higher doses. Anticonvulsants like gabapentin and pregabilin may also help and can improve nighttime sleep but may cause daytime drowsiness. SSRIs (Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor) may help but may cause unpleasant side effects. The biggest problem with diabetic neuropathy besides its symptoms is the development of diabetic foot ulcers, which have a lifetime incidence of 25 percent. Because their feet are numb, diabetics with neuropathy may not feel or detect the presence of a foot ulcer until it is fairly advanced. Advanced foot ulcers often result in bone infections and amputations. Neuropathy may also cause foot deformities like Charcot foot, which make walking painful and difficult. It is for these reasons that those with diabetes should see not only their primary care doctor but also a podiatrist at regular intervals. Community Studying different yoga texts, we come across Sanskrit words that encourage us to think and focus. “Sangha” means community. There are many different places to go where you feel supported and at one with yourself and others. Practicing together and sharing ideas about life itself is uplifting and healing for so many. What is feeding your soul? Book clubs, yoga classes, boot camps, etc. It’s not always a love fest and yet we make the commitment to show up for one another. You may belong to a few communi-
ties such as your church, temple, gym, yoga studio, bicycle crew, etc. These gatherings are instrumental in promoting a healthy attitude and lifestyle. Recently, I decided to join the YMCA because I really love to swim. It is a beautiful facility with so much to offer. For now, the pool is the place to which I am drawn. I do prefer a small personalized gym like Rockaway Gliders for spin, pilates and boot camp classes. And naturally there is nothing that compares to practicing yoga in a studio setting with

like-minded people. But everyone has their own preferences and I respect this. Small facilities promote a closer-knit community in my opinion. You are not just a body, you are treated as an individual and they know your name. In a small community you share life’s experiences and you become like family. Before you know it, you are planning lunches, dinners and vacations/retreats. It is definitely so much more than just a gym membership. You share health tips, experiences, both struggles and celebrations. You have a support group who shares their experiences with one another to help and heal. Many of us feel blessed to be in a community of like-minded individuals. We are committed in sharing space with one another for growth and stability in our health. The road to happiness is one of ease and simplicity. Acceptance and honesty are important when creating this space with one another. Laughter and tears are also part of the journey. Life is never easy without struggles and sadness, but we stay together
throughout it all. We become the safe place to go to. My first community was my family with my Mom and Dad raising seven children in a loving, supportive home. We went to church every Sunday and gathered as a group to pray for the good of all mankind. My parents taught us to respect one another and always be honest. Help those less fortunate than yourself and make friends with everyone. Be happy and content with whatever you have. Have faith and believe in humanity. Stay close to one another and live well. My family has grown and I have my own children who I have tried to instill the same values. I am blessed to have an extended family with friends, neighbors and yogis. Life has been very good to me and my intention is to share what I have been given. “Community” is vital to a healthy life. Find one that supports your interests and become part of something that will enrich your life and others. I have found a beautiful community at Ocean Bliss Yoga where there is healing, love and respect for one another.

Coil Rope Baskets By Artie Wallace When I looked online at the prices of coil rope baskets, I just had to write an article on how to do it yourself. Best of all, this project is not only fun for adults, but it’s a great project to do with the kids. You will need the following items: rope, glue gun, carpenters glue, a plastic bag (or clear wrap) and a bucket or container (for shape). Here is how to make your own. 1- Wrap the container with clear wrap or a bag. 2- With your container upside down, start laying out your rope. For square containers, start at one corner and wrap your rope around, working your way into the center. For round containers, start in the center and work your way
around towards the outside. 3- As you're wrapping your rope, frequently glue it using the glue gun to hold it in place and keep its shape. 4- Once your base is done, start at a corner (for square) or anywhere along the base (for round). Be sure to glue your sides to the bottom as you go. Wrap your rope around, gluing frequently and working your way to the top. Be sure to not wrap it too tight to the container, so you can remove it later. When you get to the top, cut the rope and glue the end well. 5- Gently lift your container out of the rope basket and peel away any remaining plastic from the inside. 6- Using your carpenter's glue, from the inside, fill all the seams where the ropes meet so that they are almost even.
Decorating: Now that your rope basket is done, you might want to decorate it. Decorating is easy. You can keep it simple by just painting a few rows of rope at the top or bottom, or you can get more creative. Using a thin wool, you can create decorations by weaving it in
and out through the rope, but be sure to re-glue any holes you make after This is one of the future projects planned for The DIYer class. To find out more about the classes or send me your ideas for future articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@ gmail.com

For just about as long I can remember, I have been an avid user of the New York City Public Library system. Once old enough to have my own library card, I would spend hours wandering the book-filled shelves of this miraculous institution where my interests were wide and varied, ranging from science fiction to classic literature as well as historical tomes. As I grew older, it became apparent that in addition to my fondness for the written word, I also realized that I was possessed with the bad habit of failing to return the borrowed books in a timely manner. It wasn't that I lost the books I had borrowed, they just somehow disappeared into the miasma of clutter that was my room, while growing up in Woodside. It got so bad that one point, if I wanted to borrow a book from the library, I had to make two trips. I first had to go and ask the librarian to provide me a list of all overdue books on record and then run home to dig through the disarray of all my earthly adolescent belongings where, more often than not, I would find the offending (and overdue) books. Then it was back to the library where, as the librarian was busy totaling up my fines, I would secretly pray that I had enough money in my
The Rockaway Times jeans to satisfy my debt. More often than not, the fine was never excessive but on those rare occasions where a book had remained among the missing for some time, the librarian was kind enough to cut me some slack. If the fine was $1.25 and I only had 45 cents on me, she would kindly accept that as payment in full, accompanied with the sage admonition that "The books are overdue making them unavailable for others to borrow, so it's only right that you should pay something, but try to return all future items on time." On those rare occasions where a book had fallen down the same black hole that Jimmy Hoffa stumbled into back in 1975, never to be seen again, I was forced to make the dreaded trip to the "Bank of Dad" to arrange for restitution. Thankfully, in each instance, my father would spring for the cost of the missing book but also required that I sit at the kitchen table attentively while he opined on the need for me to become more fiscally responsible if I ever hoped to grow up to be a mature adult. "You didn't return the book on time - you have to pay the fine" and "You lost the book - You have to pay for it..." Yep...personal responsibility was a big issue with Dad right down to the seemingly innocuous matter of overdue and/or lost library books. Which brings me to the library at Harvard University, which recently discontinued a 50-cent daily charge for “regular loan items that are overdue. According to Harvard officials, "We have witnessed firsthand the stress that overdue fines can cause for students. Eliminating standard overdue fines and standardizing loan periods across Harvard’s libraries should help students focus on their scholarship, rather than worrying about renewing library books every 28 days in order to avoid fines." Are you kidding me? Harvard students, attending that Ivy League University at an annual cost of almost $65,000, are so fragile they can’t be bothered with either returning books on time or paying for the privilege

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 28 of not returning them. How patronizing is Harvard to think that these supposedly exceptional students – who will one day kick back fat alumni checks – can’t be trusted with the adult responsibility of returning things they borrow? These privileged snowflakes are going to have a rough time in the real world working in an office the first time HR warns them to stop stealing company property. I’m not sure the excuse, “I was stressed,” will suffice. If the imbeciles at Harvard want to drone on and on about student stress caused by the worry of renewing library books every 28 days in order to avoid fines, I'll tell them about real stress. After Sandy wiped out Broad Channel back in 2012, I thought Christmas had come early when the Broad Channel Library reopened in March of 2013. With everything else that was going on I made sure to drag my Sandy-tired butt down
THURSDAY, MAY 11, 2017 Cross Bay Boulevard to visit the library to report that the books I had borrowed a week prior to the storm had gone down the black hole to visit with Jimmy Hoffa along with not only my socks but everything else in the house as well. With my father's words still in my mind ("You lost the books - You have to pay for them...") I fully expected to pay for the lost books to have my library privileges restored. Thankfully, because of the devastation wrought by Sandy, the library waived all fines and I was once again good to go. And, if I might add, free from the stress of the dreaded horror of overdue library fines overshadowing my ongoing efforts to combat the mold I was finding everywhere in my house. I would love to ask my father his opinion of the stress that overdue library fines are causing our esteemed Harvard student geniuses but I will have to wait until he stops turning over in his grave! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

NOT HURRICANE SANDY
Residents of Beach 84th Street, just off the bay, were once again subject to horrible flooding conditions last Sunday. Flooding on this street is an unfortunate and regular occurrence. The DEP was on site. The DEP was contacted for details. The DEP did not respond.

Page 33 NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
ON THE DRAFT ENVRIONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT AND TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM 001 The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development Downtown Far Rockaway Redevelopment Project NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT a public hearing will be held as detailed below for the Downtown Far Rockaway Redevelopment Project. The purpose of the public hearing is to provide the public with the opportunity to comment on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), which received a Notice of Completion on January 27, 2017, and Technical Memorandum 001, which was submitted for public review on April 26, 2017. The public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 24th, 2017 at 10:00 A.M. and will be held at the New York City Department of City Planning, Spector Hall, 22 Reade Street, New York, New York, 10007, in conjunction with the City Planning Commission’s citywide public hearing pursuant to ULURP. Translation services will be accommodated upon request at a minimum five business days before the public hearing. Comments on the DEIS and Technical Memorandum 001 will be accepted until 5:00 P.M. on Monday, June 5, 2017, and may be submitted at the public hearing, or to the contact person below. The City of New York, acting through the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC), the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), and the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS), proposes a series of land use actions to implement the recommendations of a comprehensive plan to redevelop and revitalize an approximately 22-block area of the Downtown Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens, Community District 14. The Proposed Actions include zoning map amendments, zoning text amendments, disposition and acquisition of property, and the designation and approval of an Urban Renewal Area and Plan.

Help Keep The Flags Waving Local nonprofit group, The Graybeards, have been mounting American flags along Rockaway Beach Boulevard since Sandy, as a way to continue to show the neighborhood’s patriotism and resilience. The flags were originally placed by the Wounded Warrior Project for their welcome weekend in July, but Jim Mullen of the Graybeards decided to carry on this tradition and keep the flags flying from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. The Graybeards, with the help of Liz Hanna of the former Browns Hardware, picked up the costs to replace and mount the flags. However, the old, damaged flags need to be retired and new sets need to be purchased. The Graybeards have made donations and Mazzone’s Hardware is picking up where Brown’s left off to purchase and sell the flags
at cost, however help is still needed. Mullen is reaching out to the community in case anyone else is willing to lend a helping hand. Donations can be made through the Graybeards (a 501 non-profit). Those interested in making a donation, can make checks out to The Graybeards. Write “Flags” in the memo. Donations can be mailed or dropped off to the Graybeards office at 129-04 Newport Ave (Office entrance is on the Beach 129th Street side of the corner building). Additionally, if anyone has a flag that needs to be retired, there is a "mailbox" behind the steps of the Graybeards office, where you can drop off your flag. If you see a damaged flag, you can also reach out to Mullen at jimmyspeedbump@aol.com, and he will see to it that the flag is retired properly.
The Proposed Actions are intended to transform underutilized properties with mixed-use, transit-oriented development and to unlock to the potential for additional development throughout the Rezoning Area. The Proposed Actions would concentrate mixed-use development in one of the few areas on the peninsula located out of the floodplain, with access to transit and St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (the area’s largest employer). With the inclusion of the City’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing provisions, the Proposed Actions would also provide permanently affordable housing in the neighborhood. As analyzed in the DEIS, by 2032, the Proposed Actions are expected to result in a net increase of 3,027 dwelling units, 152,935 gross square feet (gsf) of retail space, 86,947 gsf of community facility space, as well as a new publically accessible open space. The DEIS and Technical Memorandum 001 analyzed the potential environmental impacts of the Redevelopment Project and disclosed the potential for significant adverse impacts with regard to: child care centers; open space; transportation (traffic, bus and pedestrian); and construction noise. The DEIS identified measures and/or potential measures that would fully or partially mitigate most significant adverse impacts; some impacts would remain unmitigated. Between DEIS and Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS), potential mitigation measures will be studied further to determine whether they are feasible and whether any significant adverse impacts would remain unmitigated. The DEIS considered alternatives to the Proposed Actions that included a No-Action Alternative and a No Unmitigated Significant Adverse Impacts Alternative. Since the issuance of the Notice of Completion for the DEIS, the City of New York has proposed modifications to the zoning map amendments [C170243 (A) ZMQ] and the zoning text amendments [N170244 (A) ZRQ]. With these modifications, the Proposed Actions by 2032 are expected to result in a net increase of 3,123 dwelling units, 164,595 gsf of retail space, and 80,947 gsf of community facility space, as well as a new publically accessible open space. An analysis to determine whether these modifications would alter the conclusions of the DEIS is presented in Technical Memorandum 001. The analysis concludes that the proposed modifications would not result in any new or different significant adverse impacts that are not already identified in the DEIS. The analysis presented in the technical memorandum will be incorporated into the FEIS. Copies of the Notice of Completion, the DEIS, the Final Scope Work, and Technical Memorandum 001 may be obtained by any member of the public from: Mayor’s Office of Environmental Coordination Attn: Esther Brunner, Deputy Director 253 Broadway, 14th Floor New York, New York 10007 Telephone: (212) 676-3290 These documents are also available on the websites of the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Coordination and the New York City Economic Development Corporation: www.nyc.gov/oec and www.nycedc.com, respectively. Taste of Rockaway Fills Bellies and Community Spirit By Kami-Leigh Agard
Locals and out-of-towners, greedily feasted in the bi-annual event, Taste of Rockaway Beach, on Saturday, May 6. With an offering of over 31 restaurants and other shops, folks couldn’t help but take advantage as they stopped at each participating vendor, looking for food and retail satisfaction. Rockaway Beach resident, Rado Rafiringa with his daughter, niece and sister in tow, said he insisted that the family get a taste of each. “We were so full, I thought we were going to burst,” Rafiringa said. At Arverne’s West Indian eatery, Goody’s, a NYC tourist hailing from California,
said he made Goody’s his first stop, as he wanted first dibs on the jerk chicken. At ice cream parlor, Louie G, you could see the glow of satisfaction from folks stepping in. “There’s nothing like some yummy ice cream, after stuffing yourself with so many savory dishes,” said Rockaway Park resident, Kyle Patrick Wendt, as he and his roommate, Kerrie Higgins, euphorically devoured their brownie ice cream. This past Saturday’s Taste of Rockaway Beach was another one for the books. Photos by Kami-Leigh Agard and Katie McFadden.

Idea Day Is An Idea Sharing ideas is what we do. And, of course, sometimes we share pretty useless stuff, but sometimes we share some gems--great ideas that we’re just too lazy to pursue. We don’t think such sharing should be limited to a newspaper column. We’d like to propose Idea Day in schools. In advance of such a day, teachers and club moderators could talk about ideas and collaboration, and how great things come to be. And they could start to plan an Idea Day at which students could present ideas and maybe get to work on some of them. It could be a schoolwide day of fun an innovation. Good ideas have a knack for catching on. Once a school or two started having Idea Days the word would spread to other schools and pretty soon a bunch of schools would hold Idea Days.
And it wouldn’t stop there. Schools could select their best ideas to send to a district-wide or citywide Idea convention. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be a competition like the Westinghouse or Siemens Competition. It would be more like a fair or exhibition which would promote idea-sharing and collaboration. You may have heard of the TED talks, which are run by a nonprofit for the purpose of spreading ideas in all sorts of businesses and topics. Idea Day in schools would follow the same philosophy. At the very worst, students would be encouraged to think creatively and collaboratively, and we think that’s a great idea that should get its own day! (If you’ve got an idea, you’d like to share, send it our way: Mail@RockawayTimes.com)

Last Dragon Pizza Owner Defies All Odds and Wins Big By Kami-Leigh Agard
Describe Nicole Russell, Arverne resident and proprietor of Last Dragon Pizza, in one word: FEARLESS! And it’s her no-holds-barred fearlessness that propelled her to not only enter her business plan for the Queens Economic Development Corporation (QEDC) 11th Annual StartUP Business Plan Competition, but clinch the winning prize of $10K in the competition’s food category, announced last Tuesday, May 2. Russell said that she first heard about the competition this past January at a Ladies of Rockaway Beach Business January meeting. “I said to myself, why not enter? Though I am not a traditional brick-and-mortar business, just in three years, I have built up a clientele of over 500 people just in Rockaway alone, hailing from as far as Breezy Point. I also have customers from Howard Beach, South Ozone Park and Long Beach. I even ship Last Dragon frozen pizzas to as far as California. “What is there to lose by entering, taking the required classes while learning how to create a business plan amongst like-minded entrepreneurs,” Russell said. Russell, who has a background in multi-media design, lives and produces pizzas and other side dishes like her addictive jerk wings, in the Arverne home she grew up in. She revealed how Last Dragon Pizza was born.
“I grew up in this house, but have lived all over, however, when my parents moved to Florida, my sister and I took over the house. “When Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, like most of Rockaway, we lost everything. The following year in October, 2013, as we were continuing reconstruction, we got another devastating blow. My sister was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. I was determined to be there for her, and because I freelanced for so long as a designer, I made the decision to work from home to be there for my sister. “I wanted to make life normal for her, despite the crushing cancer diagnosis. Our family is Jamaican and I learned how to cook from them. I started making pizza, and would call her at

work and let her know what’s for dinner and on television, like Scandal,” Russell said. Then according to Russell, one day she offered her pizza to an electrician working on homes in the area. “He’s like, ‘This is the best pizza I’ve ever had. I am going to bring my team over tomorrow to buy some pies. Charge whatever you want.’ “I’m like what? Intrigued, I bought some pizza boxes, and one of my friends is like, ‘What are you, Daddy Green from the 80s film, “The Last Dragon?” Daddy Green was the father in the movie, who used to joke and say, ‘You guys making fun of me because I am a black guy, making pizza, but look at me now!’ So I thought Last Dragon Pizza would be a perfect way to pay homage to my dad, who recently passed away,” Russell said. So that’s how Last Dragon Pizza was born, and Russell has never turned back since. “Word got around about this black woman who makes a good pizza. Making pizza became my salvation because I was providing joy to other people, and being distracted from my own personal pain. So in a sense, Last Dragon Pizza saved me from depression," Russell said. As she gazed tenderly at her QEDC plaque, Russell said, "This
award symbolizes such an accomplishment for me as I had many sleepless nights, working on my 30-page business plan, while still pumping out pizzas for my devoted clients. "When I was informed that I won, no one would understand my joy, especially after feeling looked down upon and not taken seriously because I worked from home, when many folks did not know the personal reason behind why I chose to work from home." Russell said that she was more fixated on the award plaque, that when her QEDC counselor said, “Congratulations, but don’t forget the check,” she laughed. “I was so happy about the award, that I forgot about the actual $10K check. That just shows how I was so fixated on this plaque that was a tangible symbol of all my hard work. “I never started this to have a brick-and-mortar. I always wanted to distribute Last Dragon frozen pizza to everyone in the country. However, my QEDC counselor said to me that yes, your pizza is good, but it’s your hot service that keeps driving your customers,” Russell said. In June, Russell is going to be in QEDC’s Entrepreneurial Kitchen Space, working with a company that will produce her wholesale frozen pizzas nationwide. However, don’t be surprised if you see a brick-and-mortar Last Dragon Pizza restaurant soon. “This experience of entering this competition and working tirelessly on a business plan showed me that a lot of us have an idea, but are reluctant to take a chance to map out what we want to do. I encourage people to do it, you never know the rewards that will be reaped,” Russell said. If you haven’t tried Last Dragon Pizza yet, head to www. lastdragonpizza.com, where you can check out the menu or place an order. You can also find Last Dragon on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

My Name is Ruth TALES FROM THE GREATEST GENERATION By Ruth S. Mirsky
Almost two years ago, when I was 92, I got a call from someone who said she was researching a book on women who had served in the code-breaking branches of the military during World War II. Having enlisted in the Navy as a member of the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) in 1942, I was one of them. Not that I was very high up in the pecking order. I was only 20 at the time and had been living at home when my younger brother enlisted and I decided I would go, too. I had been working as a secretary and attending Brooklyn College at night when the war broke out. My father was against my decision, but my mother, a feminist before her time, supported me. I had to stuff myself with bananas and other fattening foods to make the weight requirement and, because I wasn’t quite 5’ 1,” I had to stretch at the physical, but the doctor didn’t seem to notice. They needed everyone they could get, I guess. I had grown up in Queens and Long Island, the oldest of five. My brother was next and then a younger sister and two more sisters—twins. They were still little when I went. I had been like a second mother to them, a kind of in-house au pair for my mother who was always busy with various organizations. But I was also kind of shy so my mother must have thought it would be good for me as well as the country. And my siblings were becoming old enough to look after themselves. I did my boot camp training at Hunter College, which the Navy had taken over, and then I was sent to Cedar Falls, Iowa. I got my final assignment to communications in Washington, D.C. with a Specialist Q Second Class rating (equivalent to a staff sergeant in the Army) and served there
for the rest of my time in the Navy. All us girls lived together in barracks right across from our headquarters, closely guarded by military police, probably because of the classified nature of our work. We became very close, and long after the war ended, we continued to write one another in a round-robin chain letter (it was before email!), and to get together for reunions in different parts of the country. I met my first husband, Harry, in those days, too. He was in the Army Air Corps, stationed out west where he had been injured in a jeep accident. In a body cast for six months, he never got sent overseas. Lucky for me. He was deployed stateside as a radar operator and, because he had family in Washington and a younger brother stationed there, he would come east to visit. I’d met his brother at a USO dance and dated him casually but when he was going overseas he introduced me to Harry and asked him to look after me while he was gone. Harry did—and we ended up getting married. I’m not sure his kid brother ever really forgave him! I was discharged shortly after getting married, following Harry from base to base. But I still remember the day we broke the Japanese code in Washington. The feeling in the air among us was electric. Suddenly we knew where the Japanese ships were. The rest, as they say, is history. After the war, Harry and I returned to civilian life, but it was hard. He tried his hand at different things. We lived for a time at Fort Jay, a military base on Governor’s Island in New York Harbor, working for a colonel and later in a ground floor tenement apartment on the Lower East Side near the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. We moved to Queens after our second child was born and lived there for eight years before relocating to
Rockaway to raise our family. We used to come home in the evenings and rush to the ocean for a swim on warm summer nights, one of the amenities of living so close to the beach. In the early 1960s our home became base for far flung family members coming to New York to visit the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadow Park. I got involved with various local organizations. Until age finally slowed me down in the last couple of years, I was president of the Queens County chapter of AMIT, a Jewish charitable organization. With five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren (and a ninth on the way), I feel like I have accomplished so much. But nothing seems quite so vivid or intense to me now as my years as a WAVE. It all came rushing back when I got that first call about the book on women in World War II. The author visited my home several times and we had some long conversations. Although my job then had been pretty mundane—I was part of a clerical team coding bits of information in various ways until the patterns could be discovered, the kind of stuff they do with computers today—it was a weighty time in my life. We were a tight-knit group. In the evenings, we had dances and the company of young men before they went off to fight. I was part of
a select group chosen to model our uniforms in a local fashion show and, of course, I met and married a young soldier who used to sweep into Washington, with a pass or without, to follow me around like a puppy dog until I said yes! I remember the time we were so wrapped up in each other that we didn’t notice an officer we passed, forgetting to salute. The MPs noticed though and promptly arrested Harry, who was in town without a pass (for a change), and sent him back to his base. So much came flooding back as I sat with the writer, talking and showing her my old photographs. Just a few weeks ago, she called again to say her book is now with the publisher, awaiting release in October, just weeks before Veterans Day. I’m not supposed to say too much about it because the publisher has it under wraps, but I can’t help feeling eager to see what she’s made of the experiences that shaped so many of our lives back then. The small part we played in that war is American history now and it feels good to know that.
