Beach 116th Businesses Could Get Shafted Is this the last stop for Last Stop? One of the closest things Rockaway has to a diner could be forced to close up shop as their lease, and several other businesses in the MTA property, is coming to an end. Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato are asking the MTA to show some mercy. Last year, several businesses along Beach 116th Street in Rockaway Park reached out to the Assemblywoman’s office, telling her that they were notified that their leases with the MTA would be coming to an end, and the buildings would be opened up to a public bidding process according to the Public Authorities Law of 2008. The businesses—Last Stop Gourmet Shop, Joseph A. Otton Tax & Accounting, Beach Cleaners and Tailors, and A & J Jewelry—were told on May 3, 2018, that their leases would be expiring and they’d have to pay rent on a month-to-month basis. However, last week, the

businesses received notice that their leases will be terminated on May 31, 2019, and would be sent out to a public bid process. In response, Addabbo and Pheffer Amato have sent a letter to Pat Foye, the Chairman and CEO of the New York MTA, asking that the MTA allow the businesses to remain open in their buildings as the agency opens up their Request for Proposal process to find new tenants. “While the 2008 Public Authorities Law requires the MTA to legally open the bidding process when these current leases are up, we can ask if they will at least let these businesses remain open, provide the local jobs and services, while the bid process is underway,” Addabbo said. “This isn’t the best situation for the business owners, but the MTA does have the legal right to do this. In the future, we may have to look at the Public Authorities Law and see what

changes can be made so situations like this do not happen again," stated the Senator. “The backbone of our community here in Rockaway is our small businesses. By the MTA upholding the public bid process, it will force these businesses to close their

doors, causing a great loss not only for the owners but for all the families of our community who utilize these businesses in Rockaway Park,” Pheffer Amato said. “I join Senator Addabbo in urging the MTA to allow these local businesses to remain.”

Sand Replenishment Ends, Erosion Begins By Katie McFadden

Rockaway Beach is back. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has completed its sand replenishment project, ahead of schedule and covering a larger section of beach than originally planned. On Tuesday, May 15, Mayor Bill de Blasio was in town, along with USACE representatives and other officials, to applaud the effort and announce that this stretch of beach is ready for the summer season. However, a walk on the beach shows that there’s still need for more to be done. After last summer’s disaster, where it was announced just before Memorial Day weekend, that the beaches from Beach 91st to 102nd Street would be closed for the summer due to erosion, the City is hoping to prevent a repeat with new sand in the area. NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver briefly recalled Rockaway’s reaction at last year’s beach opening ceremony, in which several residents

staged a funeral for the beach. “I remember last year, it was the most memorable beach opening I could remember. There was literally a mock funeral with bagpipes. So all I can say that this year… is the resurrection,” Silver joked. In mid-April, USACE began its project of dredging the East Rockaway Inlet and began using that sand to replenish an area from Beach 92nd to Beach 103rd

Streets. This project was made possible with $10.7 million that USACE awarded to contractor, Weeks Marine, with funding made available by Senator Charles Schumer, and another $2.7 million from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation to bring the sand west for the replenishment. On Tuesday, de Blasio, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver and

local business owners like Ethan Long of Rockaway Beach Brewing Company came out for a press conference on Beach 94th to applaud the efforts of the city and USACE for getting the job done in time for beach season. USACE had set out with a deadline of June 1 and finished the project ahead of time, ending in early May. Plus, they took the sand further than originally planned, extending the replenishment to Beach 105th Street. De Blasio applauded the accomplishment as a win after last year’s fiasco with the beaches being closed last minute. “It was not an easy decision to close off a section of the beach last year because we had to do it for safety reasons but it wasn’t the kind of decision you ever went to make. And the whole question was, how quickly could we get to a solution? I believed it would come sooner rather than later and today is that day and it’s a great day for the Rockaways Continued on page 6

and this is a great day for New York City because you can see with your own eyes that change has come, that this beach is back and better than ever,” the mayor said. USACE Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite spoke further about the project. “We had a project to dredge out East Rockaway Inlet, which we were going to do in 2020, but when the Mayor came to Washington, D.C. and asked what we can do, we made that dredging project happen a year earlier and we moved that sand three miles west to this beach. This was a $12 million project that was ahead of schedule and below cost. We used 348,000 cubic yards of sand. If you took a football field and put all of that sand on it, it’d be 20 stories high,” Semonite said. Semonite acknowledged that more still needs to be done and spoke about USACE’s future plans. “We can’t just keep rebuilding these beaches. We

got to make them stronger and more resilient. We’ve got another project coming. We’re in the middle of getting this in contract and rolling it out. With this $573 million project, we’re going to take the berm and make it much stronger. We’re going to put a rock base underneath that sand and make the sand go much further out. We’re going to have two million cubic yards of sand. If you were to take that same football field and pour that sand on it, it’d be like a skyscraper, 120 stories high. That’s a lot of sand. But more important is groins. Thirteen brand new groins are going in and five already existing groins will be extended. Basically, we’re going from Beach 9th all the way to Beach 149th. And

back on Jamaica Bay, there are four different areas that we’ve also go to protect. We’re trying to do it with green solutions, like wetlands and seawalls to protect those people. We’re excited about the next phase. It’s going to take about three years, so we have to work with local officials. We can’t shut the entire beach down. We have to do it in a very deliberate way where we’re transparent and we’re working with you,” he said. The need to do more was clear on Tuesday. Mayor de Blasio didn’t spend time walking on the beach, inspecting the new work, which from the boardwalk, shows huge, beautiful sandy beaches. However, a walk along the shoreline tells a different story. Recent storms have already taken a toll on USACE’s new work. In the area where the new sand is, beginning on Beach 92nd Street, there is now a threefoot drop off due to erosion, so people have to jump down to get to the ocean and find a way to climb back up to get out of it. Also, while USACE went a little further west with the project,

sand was not replenished on Beach 91st, which still remains heavily eroded. Other areas like the Beach 30s, 120s and 140s, are also facing severe erosion. So while de Blasio declared that the beaches are ready to open on Memorial Day, it’s clear that more needs to be done. On Tuesday, de Blasio also made it clear that he wasn’t there to hear what locals had to say. Some residents showed up to the press conference hoping to send another message to de Blasio, with signs protesting the proposed Beach 101st Street homeless shelter. However, they were turned away and asked by police to stand behind a designated barrier across Shore Front Parkway. Even local reporters were banned from asking questions. Mike Schramm, publisher of the Rockaway Point News, was escorted off of the boardwalk by de Blasio’s security after he asked him the question, “Where were you last year?” De Blasio is expected to come back to town for the official beach opening ceremony on Friday, May 24 at Beach 17th Street.

Changing demographics and financial challenges for both schools and families are the primary reasons private educational institutions are finding it so hard to remain viable. Many Rockaway families have ties to Kearney.

Ridiculous. ***** State Senator James Sanders will host a Job Fair and Career Expo at the Rockaway YMCA on Friday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A good number of companies are expected to attend. ***** According to Crain’s New York, the City has only spent 54 percent of the $14.7 billion in already-approved U.S. funds for recovery and storm-protection following Sandy. These numbers come courtesy of Comptroller Scott Stringer. ***** Although a variety of factors could influence the numbers, we still have to acknowledge the 100th Precinct for this bit of impressive news. In a study by the New York City Independent Budget Office,

our local precinct, had the quickest response time in the City at 1.6 minutes, Response time is the time from a 911 call to the time officers arrive at the scene. ***** Some businesses near the subway on Beach 116th Street face an uncertain future as they’ve been notified by their landlord, the MTA, that their leases will be terminated on May 31. The MTA is required to open up a bidding process when current leases expire. The affected businesses include The Last Stop, Joseph A. Otton Tax & Accounting, Beach Cleaners and Tailors, and A & J Jewelry. We hope they remain! Just a few storefronts away, the old Fashion Wave space has been vacant for years. ***** Tick tock, where's the clock? The Riis Park clock, which is undergoing renovations, was supposed to be back in April, but it looks like it's not on time. As of this past weekend, it still wasn't there. We asked the National Park Service about it, which said, "There has been a delay, but we are hopeful this will be back in place by the end of May."

In an email released on Monday, it was announced that Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn would be closing August 31, 2019. Sister Helen Kearney, C.S.J., the president of the school’s Board of Directors wrote, “After an extensive analysis of the current status of the school and its viability for the future, the Sisters of St. Joseph have reached the painful decision to close Bishop Kearney High School on August 31, 2019.” The school could not overcome economics and changing times. “Over the last few years, declining enrollment, changing demographics, reduced income and increased expenses have required cuts to faculty and services,” the letter read. Many Rockaway families have ties to Bishop Kearney High School. And many took the news hard, posting their sentiments on social media.

The news also follows the recent announcement that another Catholic school, St. Camillus in Rockaway Beach, is closing at the end of the school semester. The current graduating class of 2019 should be unaffected by the closing. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors, according to Kearney, will be assisted by transition teams who will work with “each student and her family to review grades and a new school placement.”

Also, many people take in foster children for state benefits, not really because they want, much less love children. My brother, Dan, was adopted by a beautiful gay couple, who have a total of eight children they adopted. They truly love Dan and his adopted siblings, who are all racially and culturally diverse. My sister, Chelsea, also was adopted by a loving family. Unfortunately, my sister, Linda, was not placed in the best of circumstances. You can see the difference, based on where we went, in the adults we became and our relationships today. Linda has two children, and one on the way. We are not close. Maybe it’s because where she was placed or maybe not. She’s the only one that we are not close with. I love and hope for the best for my sister, but there’s definitely a separation,” McInnes said.

According to the CB, research has shown that those who leave care without being linked to forever families have a higher likelihood than youth in the general population to experience homelessness, unemployment and incarceration as adults. The AACAP states that about 30 percent of children in foster care have severe emotional, behavioral or developmental problems. Most children, however, show remarkable resiliency and determination to go on with their lives. Twenty-eight-year-old McInnes, despite her past’s upheavals, is a positive person, and it shows in her dedication to promoting health and wellness, not just for herself, but others. She is a yoga instructor, teaching both children and adults, and is also an avid runner. “Life has not been easy, but every day I strive to be positive and take care of my body and spirit. This is also why I decided to launch the fitness crawl three years ago. It’s an opportunity for the community to do something wholesome together,

with the added benefit of paying it forward by blessing children in foster care, and to build awareness. I know what it’s like to bounce from place-to-place with just a garbage bag. When I discovered the nonprofit, Comfort Cases, I immediately fell in love with their mission. Gifting a backpack filled with hygienic products, blankets, books and more is such a sweet blessing for foster children, who sometimes are yanked out of their homes with just the clothes on their backs. It gives them dignity and a sense of ownership. Foster children, despite the circumstances they were thrust in, deserve better,” McInnes said. Running in Memory of John Kelly By Katie McFadden

John Kelly was a beloved rugby and football coach at Xavier High School for ten years. His can-do attitude carried him through a long and brave battle against ALS. Last spring, Kelly died, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be remembered by the Xavier and Breezy Point communities. This Sunday, May 19, his memory will be kept alive at the 39th Annual Buckley’s to Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run. Kelly, of Breezy Point, will be remembered as someone that left a positive impact on the lives of many. Many can credit him for helping them achieve their dreams, realize their full potential and set out on a positive path in life. Kelly lived a very physical life, coaching freshman football for 10 years and rugby for five years at Manhattan's Xavier High School, including his sons, Seamus

John Kelly

and Sean. He also served as a chief in the Department of Sanitation. Beyond that, he was a friend, a brother, a husband and a father that always shared a lesson of never giving up and fighting to be the best version of yourself. Even when he was diagnosed with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, he never gave up. With dignity, strength and courage, he battled this debilitating disease every day until he died on May 31, 2018. On May 19, as those run the Buckley's to Kennedy’s path

along State Road through Roxbury and Breezy Point, they’ll be thinking of John Kelly and the way he lived his life to the fullest. Honoring Kelly at this year’s run is not just fitting as he passed away in the past year, but the event had big meaning to him. According to one of the run organizers, Christine Strehle, Kelly met his wife, Janine, at this very event. “John and his wife met at the run. So it was always very special to them,” she said. The annual Buckley’s to Kennedy’s run is an event with special meaning to many. The event, originally started by the late Jimmy Buckley, would start at Buckley’s restaurant in Brooklyn and would head to Kennedy’s restaurant in Breezy Point. The route has since been changed, simply starting near the Army Reserve Center on State Road near Roxbury and it heads to Breezy Point, but the message remains the same. It’s all done for a good cause. Each year, the race benefits HeartShare, an organization that offers human services, especially to those with developmental disabilities. The run has raised as much as $100,000 for the organization each year. And each year, it is run in honor of someone special that has since passed on. Jimmy Buckley, the co-owner of Buckley’s and Kennedy’s, who started this tradition, died in 2010, but his children, Jimmy Buckley and Christine Strehle, along with Buckley’s and Kennedy’s co-owner Gerard Casey,

have kept his legacy going by continuing to hold this race that has become a big community event. “This is a tradition that was started by my dad and it’s important to keep that tradition alive and give back to the people that are less fortunate than us,” Strehle said. With John Kelly being the focus of this year’s run, there will be a special prize for Xavier alumni who participate. Xavier runners will have a chance to run for the Coach Kelly Cup. The Xavier graduating class that has the most participation (runners and non-runners who donate in John's memory) will be awarded the Cup. The Cup will then be displayed in a trophy case at Xavier High School. Another special award is the Elizabeth Buckley Memorial Award, given in honor of Elizabeth Buckley, who was an eighth-grade student who attended St. Margaret Mary Catholic School in Winter Park, Florida and died of cancer at age 12. Each year, a scholarship is given to an eighth-grade student at St. Francis de Sales Academy in Rockaway in honor of Elizabeth and another scholarship is given to a student at St. Margaret Mary in Florida. Plus there will be plenty of other prizes and giveaways for all runners. The 5K run has become more of a fun run/walk for many of the participants, so all are welcome to go at their own pace, but there are bragging rights for those who

want to treat the event more like a race and come on top. But the most important aspect of all is to have fun and raise funds for a good cause. The race starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday, but participants are encouraged to start lining up at 9:30 a.m. The event is rain or shine. Those interested in participating can register online at www.heartshare.org/events until noon on Friday, May 17. Fees are $20 to $30 depending on your age range. There are also registration events at both Buckley’s (2926 Avenue S in Brooklyn) and Kennedy’s (406 Bayside in Breezy Point) during opening hours on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a special registration party with music, food, giveaways and beer specials at Buckley’s. There will also be day-of registration from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. near the start line. Even those who don’t want to run or walk can get in on the fun and fundraising. The race is followed by a family fun day picnic at the Breezy Point Ball Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be live music by Head Over Heels, a DJ, games and rides and food and drinks. Non-runners can attend the picnic for $25 or $35 for a t-shirt and admission. If you can’t make it to the event, donations can still be made to HeartShare through the website. CB 14 Votes Against Developer’s Beach 9th Building Plan By Kami-Leigh Agard

Community Board 14’s modus operandi at their monthly meeting never strays from the usual dissension, outbursts and talking out of turn, but at Tuesday, May 15’s meeting, the board was pretty cool, calm and collected regarding one item on the long agenda. No way, no how were they going to accept a developer’s proposed plan for a 17-story mixed-use, residential and community facility building proposed for 128 Beach 9th Street. Save for one abstention, the board unanimously voted no, and like many NY Knicks fans on Tuesday night after having learned they lost the lottery for the top pick in the NBA draft—the developer did not look unflapped, just resigned. Back to the drawing board. The CB 14 meeting commenced with 100th Precinct Captain Louron Hall reveal-

Crime in the area has gone up 30 percent, with the highest increases seen with rapes (of the six reported, five were domestic); and robberies, including a 34 percent increase in auto grand larceny. He warned attendees that most of the larceny victims admitted to leaving their keys in their cars or leaving vehicles running unattended. He advised folks to share with the community that they have to be more vigilant and not to take unnecessary chances. With the uptick of gang-related and narcotics activities between Beach 87th and Beach 90th Streets and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, and the impending opening of the beaches, he spoke about some initiatives the Precinct is spearheading. Beach detail is starting tomorrow, Friday, May 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with one sergeant and four police officers patrolling the beaches. Then once the summer season heats up, the detail will increase to a lieutenant, one sergeant and 10 officers CB14 Chair Dolores Orr gave her report, where she shared that Far Rockaway-bound Ferry shuttle has been given a second chance, and will start running again on May 23. However, she warned, “If folks don’t use it, they will lose it.� She also shared that an application was submitted to the board for a 63-unit residential building for women in need, to be located at Gateway Boulevard and Mott Avenue. The board still is awaiting further details on the plan, and Councilman Donovan Richards supports the project. Regarding the Peninsula Hospital Site Redevelopment Plan, CB 14 met with the developers three weeks ago and nothing is moving because the board has objections with the density of units, lack of parking and infrastructure, and other grievances. However, the de-

velopers expect CB14 to have their 60-day review period between May and July. Then the Queens Borough President will have 30 days to review it, expected between July and August. The City Planning Commission will then have a 60-day review period between August and October and it is expected to be reviewed by City Council sometime around October/ November 2019. Orr said they that the Land Use Committee will be reconvening on May 29 to discuss the project. During public speaking, residents of Beach 61st Street implored the board to get the Department of Transportation (DOT) moving on implementing traffic safety measures as agreed in the last CB 14 meeting. The board did vote for the DOT Option 2 plan to change Beach 61st between the boulevard and Larkin Avenue to a northbound road; change Beach 61st between Larkin and Beach Front Road into a southbound road; change Beach 60th, between Larkin and Beach Front Road to a one-way southbound road, and changing Larkin Avenue, between Beach 59th and Beach 60th to a one-way eastbound road. However, Orr stated that they have to wait on DOT to start implementing the changes,

Regarding the Beach 9th proposed building, CB 14 specifically voted to oppose the variances in the developer’s plan due to the lack of parking, density of units, and limited square feet of the floor area. The plan calls for 60 units with only 14 parking spaces. The developer, represented by Jay Goldstein, suggested second floor parking, which some board members were at odds with. Other residents spoke up and said they were against the development arguing that the area was already so congested, lacked sufficient public transportation and did not believe that the developers would keep their promise to keep the rents at market rate, meaning $2,000 to $2,500 depending on apartment size. “Just like the Metroplex, this building could end up becoming another Section 8 or housing project,” one concerned resident said. Note that though CB 14 opposed the plan, development is not totally out the door. The developer

still has time to reformulate the plan, and present again to CB 14. Another item on the agenda was proposed zoning changes for businesses operating on 9105 Beach Channel Drive, such as the O’Connor Funeral Home. CB 14’s Housing and Land Use Committee was in support of rezoning the area to an R4-1 with a designated commercial overlay. However with the proviso that the present operating businesses must agree to not make changes in how they are operated, especially concerning parking. However, before the new zoning is approved, a separate hearing must be held to approve each business that will be operating in the area.

Some people say I was raised privileged but my parents made many sacrifices for the three of us to attend Catho-

This past week it was announced that Bishop Kearney, an allgirls high school in Brooklyn, would be closing at the end of the year. Now my daughters were not lucky enough to graduate St. Virgilius, which closed in the middle of their grammar school education, but both girls attended Bishop Kearney and it will be sad that they have technically no school to speak of as alumni. St. Francis Prep on social media and enjoy seeing the successes of students who I do not know but know that we walked the same hallways. I also enjoy seeing my old teacher, Mr. Patrick McLaughlin, successfully lead the school as principal. The thing that is interesting is that people are so saddened on social media and state crazy reasons why the school is closing such as lawsuits and free tuition. Since both of my daughters went there and graduated in 2011 and 2016, I saw the decline in enrollment each year. My older daughter, Marianne, had an English teacher she LOVED. That teacher was excessed after Marianne’s tenth grade as they had lower numbers for the next year. Each year more teachers were excessed, which was the result of declining enrollment. I know there was a committee (I was asked to join, but I just could not fit another committee in my schedule) to help the school and since I was not on it, I do not know what

actually happened. When I mentioned low enrollment to my friends as the reason, they suggested that maybe they should lower the price so more people could attend. That is difficult to do when principals are paying rising health care costs, heating, upgrading technology constantly, etc. Just remember that New York City spends an average of $17,500 per pupil per year. Kearney’s website was stating that for next year the tuition would have been $10,200. Now my younger daughter graduated in 2016 and I believe that was the tuition, so the trustees did try to keep the tuition from increasing the last few years. Some people think that low enrollment is because New York is not as Catholic as it once was. I disagree. There are many Catholics who chose, which is their right, to send their children to public school. We have to realize that with these choices, many Catholic schools will continue to close. If we do not attend the schools, they cannot keep their doors open.

Trust your Heart Listening to your heart can often be difficult, but I have found if you give yourself time alone in a quiet space, you will hear a beautiful symphony that guides you on your journey. Sometimes there is pain in the heart when we lose a loved one or when we hear of sickness in a friend’s life or when our children grow up and move away. Taking some deep breaths and giving yourself time to absorb the changes in life may help to see and feel your heart’s space. There is so much love in our hearts for one another and we

have such strong emotions from the heart space. The heart is an extraordinary organ. The beating of a heart is the first thing we hear and feel when we are pregnant with our babies. Hearts can be broken when we break up with a loved one and there is real physical pain in the heart region. It is helpful to sit with the sadness and just be with it. It’s also helpful to share your sorrow. Some would rather move on and deny the suffering, but in the end, you will not release the pain but rather bury it in your body. It can cause

sickness and pain, so better to release the ache. Unfortunately, most people will experience a broken heart in their lifetimes. When looking for answers to your life’s journey, listen to your heart. My mom did not encourage me to listen to my heart because she thought it would lead me astray. I was carefree and wanted to travel the world to immerse in all of the diverse cultures. I almost was successful but then I decided to settle down in NYC and be close to my family. Thank God I followed this path because my heart and soul is my family. My middle son is moving out west and I was heartbroken at first. He is very independent and we are very proud of all his accomplishments. He works and plays hard. Not sure if he is following his heart and/or his head, but he is young, so now is the time to travel and live his life. We take things for granted until changes force us to see how blessed we have been to share our heart’s space with one another. I believe if you love someone, you must let them go

The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and is responsible for controlling many body functions including the functioning of other endocrine glands and lipid levels. Measurement of thyroid function requires a blood test for levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxin (T4), otherwise known as thyroid hormone. When the brain detects low levels of T4 it secretes more TSH in order to have the thyroid gland make more T4. Screening for thyroid function should also include levels of anti-thyroid antibodies (i.e. thyroid peroxidase antibody). Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the thyroid, accounts for 60 to 80 percent of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) in people who have positive levels of anti-thyroid antibodies. As we

will see, recommendations for thyroid screening and when to begin treatment of hypothyroidism vary greatly. The most common scenario encountered in clinical practice is subclinical hypothyroidism. This is when a person has mildly elevated levels of TSH, normal T4, and no symptoms. Estimates put the incidence of subclinical hypothyroidism at between four to 20 percent of the U.S. population. When testing for TSH levels, it is important to take the time of day into account. TSH secretion is pulsatile and circadian. TSH levels can be 50 percent higher at night and in the early morning than they are during the day. “Normal” TSH levels are between four and five, depending on the lab’s reference values. Someone with a TSH up to 10 but a normal T4 with no symptoms has subclinical hypothyroidism. About 60 percent of these people may revert to a euthyroid (normal) state within five years without treatment,

while about five percent will go on to develop overt (symptomatic) hypothyroidism. Most of those who progress to overt disease test positive for anti-thyroid antibodies. The decision as to whether to treat someone who has subclinical hypothyroidism has many factors. These include a history of thyroid or neck surgery, a history of neck irradiation, a history of infiltrative diseases (amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, hemochromatosis), a family history of thyroid disease, and use of certain drugs like lithium and intravenous contrast dye. While the recommendations on treatment, like screening recommendations, vary widely, many experts agree that if the TSH is between five and 10 and there are anti-thyroid antibodies and/or risk factors present, treatment with levothyroxine should begin. As far as screening decisions go, risk factors for hypothyroidism, such as a family his-

tory of it, neck irradiation, thyroid surgery, elevated lipid levels, atrial fibrillation, autoimmune disorders, unexplained weight loss, and the use of certain medications must be considered. The American Thyroid Association recommends screening adults starting at age 35 with repeat screening every five years. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends starting screening after age 60, and the American College of Physicians advises after age 50. As I said, screening recommendations vary widely. Since over 70 percent of those with subclinical hypothyroidism have no symptoms, it is reasonable to base screening on risk. Someone with positive risk factors should probably start screening between 35 and 40. And, as always, screening should include looking for anti-thyroid antibodies. Cincinnatus

Cincinnatus was the name of a Roman statesman around 500 BCE who was called from his farm to lead Rome back to peacetime after several violent uprisings. After securing Rome, legend has it that Cincinnatus returned to his farm and gave up all the trappings of power. This supreme act of civic virtue has been kept alive through various Societies of Cincinnati, and in fact is the reason why we have a city in Ohio named after him. The city of Cincinnati sits right next to the Ohio River and is supposedly the home of more Revolutionary heroes than anywhere else because after the war they were granted land in the “northwest.” Recently about 16 Pastinas descended upon the banks

of this Ohio town from New York to celebrate the wedding of Luca Pastina, my Nashville nephew. The wedding took place in the monastery atop Mt. Adams, once the home of a Roman Catholic church for the Germans and Irish of this three-century-old town. The monastery now serves as an event space, and is romantically and lovingly restored, although currently deconsecrated. The wedding brought families from New York, Kentucky and Tennessee together to celebrate the first wedding of my parent’s grandchildren. The second one will be later this year, and that too will be momentous. This one featured animated dance sequences the like that Ohio has never seen before. In addition, the rehearsal dinner the night before witnessed prodigious bouts of Kentucky bourbon, that Kentuckians have also never seen. arates Kentucky from Ohio, and to fly into Cincinnati airport, you actually land in Kentucky. This was not a fun fact during the Civil War as families separated by the river, also found themselves on separate sides of the conflict too. But for this event, we Yankees were welcomed with open arms and we embraced our southern brethren right back! Family weddings can be stressful sometimes, especially when it’s a destination wedding. But this was one of those rare exceptions where everyone had fun. The flight is only an hour and a half, and the baseball Reds stadium sits right next to the river. Which had me wondering, why didn’t we ever take a trip out here to see a game? Something to think about for you Mets fans. We arrived on a Thursday and were around ‘til Saturday afternoon. We stayed downtown right across from Proctor and Gamble’s corporate headquarters. There are several other

large corporate headquarters downtown too, but we were hard pressed to find anybody out at lunchtime both days. As crowded as New York is, Cincinnati was empty. If you ever want to get away from it all, Cincinnati might be the place for you! The city also has the distinction of being the birthplace of presidents, Taft and Hayes. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, is also from Cincinnati, and the city played a big role in the Underground Railroad. This city of only 300,000 has had several nicknames during its history such as “Queen of the West” and more interestingly, “Porkopolis.” The latter coined as the country’s chief hog packing center. But for the Pastina clan, it will be remembered as the place where Luca Pastina and Emily Taylor became Mr. & Mrs. Pastina, and were celebrated by dozens of cheering Pastinas from the north and the south, an exercise in supreme civic virtue!

Mother’s Day in Rockaway means it should be safe, weather-wise, to think about your garden. How is your soil? What can you plant? Where to start? Your home should have some plantings of basic greenery. Have you noticed the abundance of hydrangea and euonymus? On Monday, May 27, 2019 The American Legion Daniel M. O'Connell Post # 272 will host its 100th Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains monument outside the church. The parade will proceed to 121VW Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will disassemble and restage to the Doughboy and Doughgirl monuments one half hour later at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94th Street for a concluding ceremony. After, we will retire to the Knights of &olumbus on Beach 90th Street for refreshments and hotdogs. All Veterans, whether a member or not of the American Legion or any other Veteran organization, are invited to march. Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrLIice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the "summer season" and many people are busy attending and their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who gave their all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout. Curley’s Hotel was originally constructed by John J. Curley in 1876, at Seaside’s beachfront and 102nd Street. In 1900, the hotel was moved to a new location, Beach 116th Street and the beach. Curley’s remained extremely popular well past WWII. This postcard view is from the outside upper deck at the hotel looking towards Far Rockaway. It is rumored that comedian George Carlin mentioned in a comedy routine that his parents conceived him at Curley’s Hotel in Rockaway Beach, NY in August 1936. (?!?!) The hotel was destroyed by fire on March 31, 1968.

Oven Baked Salmon By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 2 Ingredients 2 salmon filets (I used wild caught) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 teaspoons minced garlic ½ tablespoon onion powder ½ tablespoon paprika ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) 2 tablespoons fresh parsley salt and pepper to taste 1 lemon: ½ lemon juiced, the other half sliced thin Instructions Position rack in the center of the oven and preheat the oven to 400ºF. Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper, spray with cooking spray or lightly oil. Set aside. Using a sharp knife, make

about 4-5 slits in salmon. Dab both sides of salmon dry with paper towels, season both sides with salt and pepper. In a small pan over medium low heat, add butter, minced garlic, paprika, onion powder cayenne pepper and parsley. Stir for about 30 seconds or 1 minute. Let this mixture sit for 5 minutes. Add lemon juice to mixture. Brush salmon with spice mixture, making sure every inch is covered. Add the lemon slices to the salmon. Bake until cooked through, about 10-15 minutes, depending on the thickness of your fish and your preference of doneness. When the thickest part of the salmon is easily flaked with a fork, the salmon is perfectly cooked.

Hands Across the Sand

On Saturday, May 18, Rockaway will join coastal communities across the nation in joining hands with neighbors to send a message against offshore drilling. This year, Rockaway’s Hands Across the Sand event will take place at Beach 69th Street starting at 11:30 a.m. The local event is organized by NYC Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, Oceana Mid-Atlantic and Greenpeace. This is part of a nationwide effort to demonstrate support for protecting our coasts from dangerous and destructive offshore oil drilling. This initiative began in 2009 by Surfrider member Dave Rauschkolb with a goal of

bringing communities together to take action and stand up against unnecessary new offshore oil drilling and seismic air gun blasting off our nation’s coasts. For some, this event is now more important than ever as in January 2018, the Trump administration announced a proposal to expand offshore oil drilling in U.S. waters, threatening ocean recreation, tourism and fishing industries. The Draft Proposed Five-Year OCS Offshore Oil and Gas Leasing Program released by the Interior Department includes planned drilling in the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, and Arctic Ocean. Although this draft proposal has been temporarily postponed, it may be restarted at any time. All neighbors, surfers and friends are invited to join in on this event. The more that show up, the better, to send a stronger message.
