Beach Concessions Open This Friday — Just Keep Your Plastics At Bay By Kami-Leigh Agard
Locals — Why wait for Memorial weekend? This Friday, May 18, jumpstart your summer — Rockaway-style, as all three Rockaway Beach Club (RBC) boardwalk concessions will be open, getting the ultimate beach party started with great food and of course, live music. As the fun kicks off at the concessions this weekend, some may notice some environmentally-friendly changes. As part of RBC’s new Ocean Awareness Campaign, a plastic ban will be enforced, so if you’re expecting to get your much-desired beverage in a plastic cup with a plastic straw and just toss it, think twice. Beach 106th Concession’s Caracas Arepa Bar owner, Maribel Araujo, says she is excited about RBC’s campaign to ban plastics. “I know it’s going
to be hard at first for people to get acclimated to the idea, but it’s so important for us as

a beachside community. The amount of plastic materials that is littered on our beaches and ends up in the ocean is daunting. However, as a united front, we are all going to do our best to push the plastic ban,” she said. Araujo said all of the concessions will be selling reusable cups and straws, and as an incentive, one dollar will be taken off drinks when you bring your own cup at any of the concession bars. As for what’s new and poppin’ at the Beach 106th concession, for foodie and beverage gourmands, in addition to its popular arepas and todie-for sangria, Caracas will be dishing up some vegan options, and debuting a new drink, Hard Kombucha. According to Araujo, with 3.2 percent alcohol, this Hard Kombucha drink is said to be good for your digestive system, accentuated with a little
buzz. On the entertainment front, though lively music will be pumping this weekend, next Friday, May 25, get ready for Rockaway and Rincón, PR, favorite, Big Squid to turn up the heat at Caracas with their high energy R&B, blues, funk and NOLA sound, starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday, May 26, the “let loose” Latin party begins as Venezuelan DJs and artists, DJ MPeach and DJ Darelectric’s combined high energy, Latin-influenced Afro-Caribbean dance beats will have you sweating and lusting for more. And keep your dancing shoes on, the party continues at Caracas the rest of the weekend with more eclectic music summer soul. Hall Of Fame Friend To Many Clare Droesch was selected as a high school All-American basketball player. She was one of the very top players in the entire country. Her hoops prowess got her on magazine covers. She was offered scholarships to powerhouse schools and eventually chose Boston College. In her final home game, she helped beat No. 1-ranked UConn in a nationally televised game. She had a great enough career to be inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. Clare was a legit basketball legend. And although the accolades were deserved and plentiful, they hardly captured Clare, the person—the force of nature that touched so many people. Clare Droesch made her life so much bigger and fuller than basketball. If there were an All-American team based on how many friends you had, and how many
people you inspired, Clare would be First Team. After a 324-week battle, she succumbed to cancer last Friday, May 11 at the age of 36. When the cancer was first discovered more than six years ago, Clare took the fight public and told everyone she was going to give it her all. Although it was her battle, she said she found strength by thinking of others. She wrote about her dad holding her hand on the way home from treatments and how she knew he’d trade places with her, die for her. She said the nausea and pain she felt would disappear when they passed the Freedom Tower in the car. She thought about the victims of 9/11 and the families still struggling with the loss and how some people were alone in their grief. She had family, she had friends for support. It was like being on a team again. Testimonials on Facebook were posted by hundreds of people, heartbroken over the news. Many cited her strength
and inspiration while others called her cool, funny, wild – a partner in crime – caring, humble, and generous. A high school friend wrote, “When I transferred into Christ The King as a sophomore, I shared a locker corner with an amazingly cool, funny lady who was one of the most welcoming people I
had ever met. I had no idea she was an All-American basketball player but I definitely thought of her as an all-world person and friend.” Her life was short; her impact everlasting. There should be one more trophy, one last honor because Clare Droesch had a Hall of Fame life.

Jordan Woolf, founder behind Rockaway Raw Bar and Hot 97, is excited about premiering the new fish joint at the concession. “We are only going to be serving high quality and sustainable fish, and are using the company, Sea To Table, as a source for our catch,” Woolf said. Danny Kent, he is just stoked about finally opening for summer. “Besides the new Hot 97, I’m so ready to finally be able to grab a coffee in the morning at La Fruteria on the boardwalk. On the entertainment front, get your dancing shoes on as Rattrap Bumpkin jams out with their pirate rock at the Beach 97th concession on Friday, May 18. Though Rattrap doesn’t come on stage until 7:30 p.m., from 6 p.m., Ecstatic Mermen will entertain you with their seafaring rock. On Sunday, May 27, also at 1 p.m., gear up for more roots reggae with Top Shotta Band featuring Screechy Dan, and on Sunday, May 28, 1 p.m., if you’re a Jonny Cash fan, change up the vibe with Johnny Kinnaird and the Outlaw Country Tribute. Show Consideration Dear Editor: As a Rockaway Park resident and a community activist, I would like to thank Councilman Eric Ulrich and his staff for putting the community engagement meeting together. This was terrific. Leaders and residents from different parts of the community came in to share different ideas. When meetings like this are held, people always have different ideas. Perhaps some may go forward and some may not. My point is we’re all in this together to better our community, so for one person to attack other residents at this meeting is shameful. ments like, "WHY DON'T YOU GET PEOPLE ON YOUR BLOCK TO DO SOMETHING" and "PUT TREES ON YOUR OWN BLOCK," well the whole idea of this meeting was to give our ideas, not yell at any individual because of their idea. If you have an opinion on why an idea may be good or not, there's nothing wrong with discussing it, but yelling and downing others is NOT the way to go. I hope the person who did this realizes what they did was totally wrong and when they attend other community meetings such as this one, be more considerate when it comes to your neighbors. Danny Ruscillo Peninsula Problems Dear Editor: I believe that, since the days of Robert Moses, the city has dumped as many of the poor and unfortunate as it could on the Rockaways. Our current councilman on the eastern end, in his sincere concern for the unfortunate, has only exacerbated the situation. The Rockaways has more than
its share of Queens public housing apartments, nursing home beds, students performing below grade level, low income, and any other category of distress that you care to use. Now there can be no doubt that such people need and deserve our, and our city’s support, there is also no doubt that not all of them need to nor should be housed in the Rockaways. The Bayswater Civic Association, of which I am a board member, adopted a resolution stating that there should be no more low income or subsidized housing in the Rockaways until the proportion of market rate housing in the Rockaways was the same as that in Queens as a whole. Nonetheless, the city is constructing or arranging the construction of low income (less than 100% of AMI) housing near Beach 44 Street, Beach 34 Street, and 5,500 units in downtown Far Rockaway. They now propose to add 2,200 units on the Peninsula Hospital site and 1,000 units of homeless housing. When is enough, enough? Eugene Falik

Remembering Clare Droesch: A Warrior That Always Won By Katie McFadden
“Cancer, you may have tried to ruin my life and take me out, but no matter how Painful, Annoying, Lethal, Hurtful and the many other words I can use, just know I will Fight and Battle you till the last second I can, and guess what, My Motto in Life: I ALWAYS WIN!” On December 19, 2013, Clare Droesch, or “Clare Bear” shared that message with her thousands of friends on her Facebook page. At the time she posted it, it was two years from the day that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. She would go on to The Droesch Family
fight and battle cancer for almost another four and a half years. On May 11, 2018, that battle came to an end, but she never lost. Clare Droesch always won. That was made clear in the inspirational way she lived her life, pre- and post-diagnosis. She won on basketball courts, all over the world. She won through her determination to live every day as if it were her last. And she won the love of thousands in her 36 years of life. Born on April 2, 1982, to Patricia and George Droesch, Clare fell in love with the sport she loved most in the neighborhood she grew up in. From a young age, neighbors would watch her and her brother, George, play on the block they grew up on, Beach 134th, or occasionally showing off some early shooting skills on the
Pop-a-Shot basketball game at her family’s bar, the Belle Harbor Tavern, now known as Jamesons. It was only a matter of time until Droesch started playing CYO basketball for the team where she attended elementary school, St. Francis de Sales. It was on the courts of St. Francis, during CYO and Summer Classics, that Droesch started to shine and that talent exploded as she grew with the sport. “If you told Clare she couldn’t do something, her answer was ‘Why not?’ and ‘Because I said so,’ was not an acceptable answer to her,” Keith “Bugsy” Goldberg, a longtime family friend who had known Droesch since birth, and coached her during the Summer Classics, said. That can-do attitude would follow her to Christ the King High School and beyond. As a Royal, she proved to be royalty on the court. Many will never forget the time she scored a whopping 48 points in one game against rival, Bishop Kearney, breaking Christ the King’s girls scoring record. Droesch was also instrumental in leading the team to victory in several city and state championships, and being ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, while Droesch was named New York Player of the Year, three times by Newsday. Droesch was one to make headlines, both statewide and across the

country, and she was on the radar of top college basketball teams. She decided to soar with the Eagles, enrolling in Boston College (BC) in 2001, where she would continue to impress for four years. Droesch helped the Eagles reach the NCAA Tournament all four seasons, including two Sweet 16 appearances, and helped them claim the 2004 Big East title. In her college career, Droesch never missed a game, even pushing through the pain of foot injuries in her junior and senior years. She waited until after graduating to have corrective surgery. Of the 126 games she played, the Eagles won 92 of them, and she scored 1,136 points for the team, 12th best in school history. She would later be named an ACC Legend in 2015 and inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 2016. After graduating from BC in 2005, basketball brought her across the world, as she went on to play professionally in Lisbon, Portugal, becoming team captain for the Alges. Further foot injuries would cut Droesch’s professional career short, but she never gave up on the game. Instead, she brought her talents to the sidelines and went on to coach college basketball at UMass Boston, Vanderbilt and St. John’s. However, Droesch knew she’d have the most impact on the younger generations, especial-
ly those at home. Droesch always seemed to have a way with kids. From her younger cousins, to her niece and nephew, Liam and Emma, to treating her friends’ kids and neighborhood kids like family, Droesch “adored kids,” Bernadette McCann, one of Droesch’s best friends since childhood said. “She valued this community, especially the young kids. She always wanted to make an impact on them and she never wanted the young kids to think she was giving up.” She started coaching at the high school level, starting with Scholars’ Academy, where her cousin Kristin Henschel was part of the team. She then went on to coach at St. Edmund Prep before finding herself back at her alma mater — Christ the King, where she was the assistant coach, alongside her high school coach, Bob Mackey. It was during her high school coaching career that Droesch started to make headlines that no one wanted to see. After her diagnosis in December 2011, word spread about the basketball superstar facing an even bigger opponent—cancer. Yet she took it on as she would any basketball game— by winning. “When she was diagnosed, they told her that she had six months,” Goldberg said. But once again, that can-do attitude dominated. “She decided she was in this for the long run. She went a lot more than six months,” Goldberg said. “She had a positive attitude the entire time,” McCann said. “She was built for this and knew she could handle it. She always took the route of doing anything to fight for her health. Doctors sat in front of her and would be dumbfounded. She was brick solid and she defied so many odds in the six and a half years that she fought.” Through it all, she never gave up on basketball or inspiring younger generations through the sport, and through her health battle. She continued coaching at Christ the King and even went on to teach basketball camps throughout Rockaway. “She was not giving up,” Continued on page 13

McCann said. “She would go to a chemo treatment at noon and would be at basketball practice at Christ the King right after. Any other person would say, ‘I don’t feel good.’ She’d push on and make sure she was there for everything and everyone.” While Droesch’s basketball career was nothing short of remarkable, her love of friends and family is what those who were close to the girl with an infectious smile and a big heart, will remember most. It’s no surprise that Denis S. O’Connor Funeral Home had lines around the corner on Tuesday, May 15, as hundreds came to pay their respects to a beloved family member and friend. “Clare made everyone feel like a best friend. She had a ton of friends, but she always made you feel like you were number
one. If you were in her presence, you were number one to her. It showed what a good friend she was,” McCann said. Droesch’s loyalty and tendency to care for others was apparent through the end. “A few weeks ago, my mother passed away and Clare was starting to get very sick. She said, ‘I can’t believe my best friend just lost her mom and now she’s going to lose her best friend.’ She was a warrior, but she was always worried about other people,” McCann said. Droesch’s care and concern for others was reciprocated throughout her battle. From fundraiser parties to the Crush Clare’s Cancer 3-on-3 By The Sea Basketball Tournament that she established, the Rockaway community always showed up to support her and help with some of her medical costs. Among these fundraisers was the annual Ponytail Trail, a biking pub crawl that local friends set up to raise money for Droesch, but also to show her a good time. However, it was always Droesch that
proved she was the queen of having a good time and living life to the fullest. “Clare knew how to party,” McCann said. “She could hang out until 5 a.m. and act like she didn’t even go out the night before. She knew how to have a good time and never let cancer get in the way. She could crush it.” Droesch crushed the party life, while crushing cancer. “She took every opportunity to try different treatments and kept going so she could live life to the fullest,” McCann said. “Her fight isn’t over. Even in her passing, she’s going to be helping millions of people all over the world because of everything she did and everything doctors learned from her treatments. She was young and strong and she lived her life while being completely covered with cancer. It never stopped her and her fight is going to help many in the future.” McCann says that Droesch appreciated everything everyone did for her throughout her journey. “Her friends and fam-

But all that would have to wait. The good news came first: the BHPOA won their three-year bat-

Nicole Garcia, Queens commissioner of the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) announcement that “a little over $36 million” is officially secured, dedicated to a reconstruction of Beach Channel Drive (BCD) between Beach 124th Street and Beach 145th Street and between Beach 116th Street to Beach 108th Street, was met with rousing applause. It’s a victory for the BHPOA which, for the last three years has been pushing for the SandHW11 reconstruction project to extend up to Beach 145th Street. SandHW11 was originally only slated for the stretch between Beach 116th Street and Beach 124th Street. John Signorelli, 3rd vice president and an engineer himself, led the fight, contending the entire stretch of BCD from Beach 116th Street to Beach 145th Street suffered the same damage in Hurricane Sandy and anything less than a full reconstruction would be unacceptable. Thanks to his efforts and the BHPOA collectively, residents can look forward to full depth recon-

Assembly District Leader Lew Simon reported on the meeting with the Department of Homeless Services held last week. “Each community board will be getting a shelter and for us, Community Board 14, that means we're going to get 965 more shelter people for Rockaway,” Simon said. Mentioning his concern that Rockaway is already saturated, he too urged community involvement. With the official opening of the beaches on May 25, Portia Cook-Dyrenforth, Rockaway Park administrator for the Department of Parks and Recreation, outlined some of the summer events Parks has planned, like Zumba at the hockey rink on Beach 108th Street, yoga on the beach, Saturday mornings at 8 a.m., a summer kick-off event on June 23 and the famous sandcastle contest on July 29. Dyrenforth also announced the availability of beach-accessible wheelchairs on loan, available at the Beach 86th Street office. Call her office at 718-318- 4001 for information. Lack of mobility mats remained an issue for D’Amico who complained directly to Dyrenforth about inconsistency in placement, noting the lack of one on her block. Nationwide EpiPen® Shortage: Should We Worry? By Rosemary McGuire
For the millions of severe allergy suffers in the United States, the EpiPen®, a self-administered pre-packaged dose of the drug epinephrine, can mean the difference between life and death. When a potentially deadly allergic reaction is happening— think bee stings, peanuts and some medications—seconds count, so it’s easy to understand why the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sparked nationwide fear when they announced last week they were placing EpiPen® on their dreaded drug shortage list. EpiPen is a pre-filled injection of epinephrine used by allergy sufferers in cases of anaphylaxis—a possible fatal emergency characterized by swelling of lips, tongue and throat, sudden drop in blood pressure, hives, nausea, vomiting—as a reaction to food, insect bites or medications, to name a few. Stabbing the thigh
with the pre-filled tube counteracts those allergic responses, giving the patient precious time to get to the closest emergency room. But it’s not EpiPen itself that’s the savior, it’s the medication, epinephrine, inside the pen, leading some to question the motives of the reported shortage. As many users of the device may recall, Mylan the pharmaceutical manufacturing company of EpiPen, came under fire two years ago for raising the price of EpiPen by a whopping 500 percent, outraging customers and forcing the company to testify before a House Oversight Committee probing the hike. Mylan claims the current shortage is due to delays at Meridian Medical, a Pfizer company who makes the injector device. In a statement, the FDA too cited “manufacturing delays” as the culprit for the current shortage, but here on the peninsula, we seem to be ade-
quately stocked. Of the eleven pharmacies contacted, six had them in stock. One said that although they had none on hand, they assured The Rockaway Times that if a patient came in with a prescription, they would be able to get it, three stores did not have it in stock but reported them as “on order” and Duane Reade refused to comment, directing all inquiries to the corporate office. All the local pharmacists we
spoke to were well aware of the FDA’s announcement, yet few seemed concerned. “We’ve had no problems getting them,” Michael Rudner, RPh, pharmacist at CVS pharmacy on Beach 20th Street said. “We have them in stock now.” And according to Dr. Peter Galvin, a board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine here in Rockaway, Continued on page 20
On Monday, May 28th, 2017 The American Legion Daniel M. O'Connell Post # 272 will host its annual Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains monument outside the church. The parade, with Grand Marshal Monsignor Bracken, will proceed to Beach 121th Street for a ceremony and rededication of the plaque for John P. McGonigal at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will proceed to the Doughboy monument at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94th Street. Following the reading of the names of those from the Rockaway community who gave their lives in service to our great nation and a memorial service, we will retire to the Knights of Columbus hall on Beach 90th Street for refreshments and hot dogs. Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the "summer season" and many people are busy attending and their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who gave their all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout. I would like to give a special thanks to Monsignor Bracken, the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 21, and St. Francis de Sales for their support and participation in this parade. We cordially invite you to join us on this day of remembrance as we, for the 99th year in a row, honor our fallen comrades.

Kaleo is a pharmaceutical company that manufactures AUVI-Q, which is an epinephrine injecting device and a competitor of EpiPen. AUVI-Q may be purchased directly from the company. In addition, as was the case before the advent of EpiPen, patients can go to their doctor or pharmacist and get pre-filled epinephrine syringes,” Galvin said. And the FDA isn’t dragging its heels either. Responding immediately to The Rockaway Times’ request for comment, Lauren Smith Dyer from the Office of External Affairs at the FDA said, “The FDA has been working closely with Mylan to understand the status of EpiPen production supply and has been in contact with the other manufacturers of epinephrine auto-injectors as well regarding their supply status. This is a continuously evolving and fast-moving
issue. Multiple factors have resulted in limited availability of EpiPen® in certain areas in the U.S,” however, she adds, “the FDA anticipates the issue to be short-term.” “Mylan continues to release the product and the firm (Mylan) has provided a number which will be posted on our website to help pharmacies and patients locate EpiPen,” Smith Dyer said. A statement released by Mylan said, “Mylan and Pfizer take the supply of EpiPen and EpiPen Jr Auto-Injectors very seriously. Our first priority is to ensure patients with a life-threatening allergy have access to epinephrine auto-injector products.” Anyone having difficulty finding EpiPen, can call Mylan at 1-800-395-3376 or 1-800-7969526 for assistance and check the FDA’s drug shortages website://www.accessdata.fda.gov for the latest supply information. FROM THE RBA Last Friday night, the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) produced its first major outdoor event of the season. “Rock (the Nite) Away� was a raging success, with programming ranging from live music to speed-eating to magic! Kids went fishing at Jamaica Bay Rockaway Parks Conservancy, enjoyed a magic show from Omar Olusion, planted flowers and decorated cards for Mother’s Day, learned to surf, took nifty Instagram photos, and made Sharky piggybanks with Tsadik G Management. Adults did yoga and Qui Gong with NurtureU Wellness, ate outdoors at Claudettes, rocked out to live music, competed in the pizza-eating contest at Ciro’s, and danced the night away to the beats of DJ Mikey Palms. Random Acts of Kindness By Paulette Mancuso
The kindness of strangers when directed towards me is always amazing, even though I do practice kindnesses often. About a half hour into thinking about the above, while I was sitting in a restaurant at the bar, finishing my wine after dinner, a woman came in and sat in the seat to the left of me and handed the woman further to the left a bouquet of flowers. The woman said at first, “Oh, why did you do
that? You shouldn’t have,” and finally said, "Thank you." The flower-giver and I started talking and she immediately shared news about all the loss in her life—dog (most recently), three husbands (yes, three), mother, etc., etc., in 11 years. And now she finds any opportunity to give—mostly a lot of flowers! The day before in the same restaurant—her local place—she gave two other women flowers who were celebrating a birthday and Mother’s Day. For her, she
feels better by giving something to others to make them feel good with something beautiful. I recently remembered a sweet act of kindness: when I was in San Francisco once, we were meeting a friend—new person/ friend to me—at a restaurant. Neil Young was seated at a long table and when he got up to leave, I mentioned to this new friend, “There’s Neil Young, I know all of his songs!” (of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). David took my hand, walked me outside to where Neil Young was about to get into his light-colored vintage convertible. I mumbled how I know all of his songs and he said thank you and got into his car. David is this kind of fellow: always taking the opportunity to make someone feel good. Just give, give, give! And don’t worry about how it will be received or perceived. We do not know what someone is going through or what someone has been through. It is great when we can feel a vibe or something from someone and react to it to help them. Another recent experience: I was on a plane for a long
The Rockaway Times flight with a window seat. Just arrived. Sat down. Someone was in the aisle seat. I was a little uneasy. She turned to me and asked if I was alright. Whatever I put out, she felt it. I told her I was a little uneasy sitting in the window seat and she said, let’s switch, no problem. She tuned in to me, felt something and offered some kindness. We didn’t exchange a lot of words after that—just a silent understanding. People are kind and give for different reasons. I think and feel that when we give, it is also a gift to ourselves. I feel really great when I do something for someone or give something that has meaning to someone else. Practice random acts of kindness—they are win-wins! May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Headaches It is estimated that 96 percent of humans will suffer from one or more headaches during their lifetime. References to headaches can be found in ancient writings like the Ebers Papyrus (dating to circa 1550 B.C.). Visual symptoms from headaches were described by Hippocrates in 400 B.C. Interest in headaches extends back as far as recorded history, and it is one of the most common complaints of patients who present for medical care. The direct and indirect socioeconomic costs of headaches to society are estimated at $14 billion per year. For reasons that are unknown, headaches are more
common in women. Overall, tension-type headaches account for 40 percent of the total amount of headaches, and migraines account for 10 percent. Headaches may be primary (migraine, tension, trigeminal neuralgia) or secondary (due to something else like trauma, infection, and other diseases). Fortunately, only one percent of patients with a brain tumor will have headache as the only complaint. Migraines are the seventh highest cause of disability worldwide. Migraines may occur with or without an aura. The aura is a fully-reversible set of neurologic symptoms, most often visual or
sensory, that appear gradually and then recede. The headache begins about 60 minutes after the aura recedes. Most migraine headaches occur on one side of the head and are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, photophobia (avoidance of light), and phonophobia (avoidance of noise). Hemiplegic migraines are rare – the aura of this type of migraine includes one-sided limb weakness. While the exact cause of migraines is unknown, it is thought that the brain is ultrasensitive to changes that can trigger a headache. These changes then cause the nervous system to release substances that cause the nervous system and brain to become inflamed. Medications are available and can be used to both treat the headache and, if taken regularly, prevent headaches from occurring. Lifestyle modifications like avoidance of red wine and chocolate and smoking cessation also help prevent migraine headaches. When evaluating a person for headaches, brain imaging with MRI or CT scan is rarely indicated unless there are red flags. In
Page 29 the U.S., it is estimated that $1 billion dollars a year is wasted on unnecessary brain imaging in patients with primary headache disorder. These red flags include new headaches in an older person, abnormal neurologic examination, a change in headache pattern or progressively worsening headaches, new headache in the setting of HIV risk factors, cancer, a compromised immune system, signs of systemic illness (fever, rash, stiff neck), headache that is triggered by coughing, exertion, or Valsalva maneuver (i.e. straining during a bowel movement), headache in pregnancy or postpartum period, and first or worst headache. While not a red flag in and of itself, brain imaging is indicated for thunderclap headaches. This type of secondary headache is a very sudden onset, severe headache that reaches maximal intensity within one minute of onset and is often caused by an emergent brain condition like cerebral hemorrhage. The strangest thing about time is that it seems like it is measurable; we have clocks and systems for measuring days, hours, minutes, seconds and even finer points. But have you ever noticed that at certain times that time itself seems like it expands and contracts? Think about it, there are always those situations when you feel like it is taking forever to get to what you want, or forever for something to end. Then there
are those situations when you are truly enjoying yourself, but the time whisks by so quickly it doesn’t seem fair. How is that even possible? I mean a minute is a minute, right? An hour an hour; but, depending upon your expectations and your feelings, it influences how you experience the moment. I am always amazed at how some people can take a terrible situation and see light in it. I truly envy those folks because they are forever optimistic, and they make us all
feel better, as opposed to those that see darkness in everything and are truly a bummer to be around. I don’t know if time is subjective or not, I am no Einstein for sure, but it seems to me that how you see the world, and the environment that you are in and the people that surround you certainly influences how you experience time. How often have you been in a bad situation with fun people and had a great time? We walk away feeling better about ourselves and the world. I’m not always optimistic, but I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by people my whole life who see the glass as halffilled. And it’s had a positive effect on me and my outlook. It’s hard to understand when people leave us too soon, how that could be fair or possible. Those are times when we feel that the “time” we had was way too short. And usually those are the people that are blessed with some indomitable spirit or optimistic point of view that made them
The Rockaway Times magnetic to be around. Their force always pulled you toward them and never away. Their spirit seemed to defy time itself, looking the broad continuum straight in the eye, winking conspiratorially and moving on with a smile left on everyone’s face. They simply made you feel better despite time. When those blithe spirits leave us, “time” seems to come back and demand it’s proper due, collecting those lost moments to its fiercest competitors. But no matter, we are the richer for the experience of feeling time bend toward optimism, toward the light, refracted toward the heavens. How lucky we are to have had those experiences. I guess the best way to say thank you, is to continue the tradition of being optimistic, being the light-hearted one, never the heavy. In that way, time can never win because we pass those traits on to the next generation fearlessly. Here’s to the “time-benders,” may you light the way.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Rock Men Ready For The Runway Last week, my boss, Publisher Kevin Boyle, stated pretty boldly that the men of Rockaway have no fashion sense or style. I know I have just started writing for this paper and I hope he does not get angry with me, but I am going to disagree with him on this statement. I think the men of the Rockaway Peninsula, and the surrounding areas have stepped up their game lately. For years we did have the Rockaway uniform, which consisted of khaki pants, a navy blue blazer and a blue or white dress shirt. However, after attending many events in the last year, I think the men of the town
have really started to like dressing up for special occasions. Kevin, didn’t you attend the same Graybeards Dinner I did? Maybe it’s an age thing. Maybe Kevin’s age group has given up on their fashion sense and do think dark sweatpants are dressy attire. Kevin mentioned communions. I attended a few this year and all of the dads were dressed very classy. My husband asked me if he could wear jeans and I informed him he could as long as he wore a nice button-down shirt and nice shoes. Again, to disagree with Kevin, my husband put on clothes that he bought for

himself. I stopped shopping for him many years ago. I am a big TJ Maxx and Marshalls shopper and he only likes original storebought clothes: no imperfections for him at a smaller price. I mean, if anyone in this town knows John Ronayne or Joe Courtney, who could say they have ever been poorly dressed? Joe was one of those dads who was very sharply dressed at his son’s communion. I heard one of John’s children made communion also recently. I could not find any pictures on social media, but I am sure he looked dapper. I was thinking maybe a seersucker suit and definitely a great pair of shoes. Also, Kevin, check out Facebook, where the communion pictures were blowing up the news feed and all of the dads looked great. Another great bunch of welldressed guys are the The Rockaway Fam, the Kelly boys always bring their A-Game and even dress in themes. Any patriotic holiday, they all have on flag attire. I mean, did anyone see the picture of Chris McGuiness and his crew at the Kentucky Derby?

Cabbage, Potato and Smoked Turkey Sausage By Sharon Feldman
Serves: 4 Ingredients: ½ head of cabbage (or one small one), sliced into ribbons 1 large sweet onion, chopped 1 pound smoked turkey sausage, cut into ½” circles 3-4 medium red potatoes, diced in ¼” slices or chopped into small bite-size pieces 1 cup chicken broth Dash of seasoning salt Dash of pepper ½ teaspoon smoked paprika Directions: Heat pan and add onion,
smoked turkey sausage and potatoes. Season with the seasoning salt lightly, as the sausage has enough salt, and pepper and paprika. Cook and stir over medium heat until potatoes are cooked halfway through. Add the sliced cabbage and one cup of chicken broth. Cook, stirring occasionally until cabbage is crisp and tender and most of the liquid evaporates. If you like softer cabbage, cook longer.

Last week, I attended Françoise Hardy’s Book Launch for her autobiography, The Despair of Monkeys and Other Trifles at The Soho Grand. Ms. Hardy was not present, but the evening drew a Euro-centric crowd drinking cocktails while the DJ, who looked like a young Françoise Hardy circa 1965, spun French pop music. Copies of Hardy's book were courteously fanned out on the tables. Françoise Hardy is a French singer-songwriter best known for starting the “yé-yé” movement in pop music (the French answer to the Beatles’ English “yeah! yeah!” style) with her first hit, “Tous les garcons et les filles.” Mick Jagger said in an interview with French teen magazine, Mademoiselle Age Tendre, that Hardy was his ideal woman. David Bowie was a fan, and Bob Dylan dedicated a poem to her on the sleeve of his 1964 album, Another Side of Bob Dylan. In her book, she writes that she was born the “natural child” of her 23-year-old mother and a married man. Hardy grew up shy and introverted. Her song lyrics would later reflect her inner thoughtfulness, much the same way that the Existentialist philosophy is based on reflections of humanity in an unfathomable universe. Fans of Ms. Hardy will be delighted with the extent to which she reveals the circumstances around her recordings
and what she was expressing at the time. As someone who had not been familiar with her, these insights will facilitate my understanding of her albums. After studying a year at the Sorbonne, Hardy answered an audition ad. Her career skyrocketed, and the world opened up to her. Willowy and telegenic, she branched out into modeling and acting as well. Introspective, Hardy brought an existentialism to her music. Her inner-directedness emerges in both her song lyrics and throughout the book. Her music mirrored her personal life. She notes that she was continually finding herself in relationships with laissez-faire lovers and striving too hard to make things work. Despite being confused and discontented by these relationships, she'd still empathize with her men, who she likened to her favorite tree, The Despair of Monkeys, aka the Monkey Puzzle. The tree has a slender trunk supporting long, delicate branches that curve every which way, posing a climbing puzzle supposedly challenging even to monkeys. “. . .and I do not know whether I am attracted to it because I am almost a member of its family or because it reminds me of men who have caused me despair. They, too, discourage people from getting too close by making themselves inaccessible or by casting thorns. Fragile as they were, how could they have done otherwise?" Hardy brings us to the present day in her book, writing about the ageing process, the tragic story of her sister's fate, her love for her son, and her acceptance of where she is today, a talented, full, thoughtful woman.

Full Fun Dear Enchantress, I was watching one of your videos on Facebook where you spoke about having “full fun.” I am too shy to have full fun, and I'm not really sure I have ever had full fun, but I love the idea of it. How can I, as a shy young woman, let myself be more adventurous to have fun! I know it may sound crazy, but I love dancing, and even when I think about dancing around other people, I get shy just thinking about it. I stand by and watch others dancing around and laughing, and I stand back. I'm not a heavy drinker, but I see I feel more comfortable after I've had
more drinks. I think it's ok, but I know I'm using it as a way to avoid feeling uncomfortable. Love, Ms. Awkward and Shy Dear Ms. Awkward and Shy, You are not alone. Also you are so BRAVE! Wanting to have fun without alcohol is a courageous move. I am not against alcohol as a celebration, but as an escape, it's no bueno (no good). SO! Welcome to the enchanted awkward side of life. I have many awkward moments, and even though not many people believe me, it's true, and it takes practice and training to get comforta-
ble with all the feelings, and moments that come up with FULL FUN. Full fun is confronting to others, the bigness and the playfulness of an adult (a sober adult), which can make them look at their own habits. I bring this up because if someone takes a risk to have full fun, you will be faced with judgement and "looks" from others. The strength to ignore the looks, judgements and assessments from others needs support. It's trust muscle that you build. Trusting yourself to be full anything needs time and energy spent in practicing it. So practice and BE NICE TO YOURSELF, get support. Take yourself to a class aligned with fun. I always like a dance class, I say go to a women's dance class, because this is a situation that women are most familiar with. Take baby steps and be full fun with yourself at home or with a friend. Get your body knowing what it FEELS like to be full fun. Put on your favorite songs from when you were carefree and

My intention is: creating a playground space for women to feel and explore their full self of expression. Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Pairing Nonverbal Autistic Voices to Opera? Readers, I promise you, when you check out this documentary by the Lynx Project (vimeo. com/249943807), tears will come to your eyes. In disbelief, I watched it over and over again, riveted by the prowess of these nonverbal songwriters with autism who expressed so much within by simply tapping the letters of songs they authored themselves. Their words, complemented with the sonorous operatic voices, pulled at my heart, while my daughter, Soanirina (aka Soa) miraculously also sat still (Thank God!), mesmerized by the plurality emanated by both the words and the heavenly voices singing them in none other than opera. Soa even started singing the tunes in a soprano pitch, engulfing the house in a majestically calming atmosphere. When I received the email from Caitleen Kahn, co-founder of Lynx Project, I was shocked. She wrote, “My name is Caitleen Kahn and I am the executive director of a nonprofit called Lynx Project. Our main project currently is one in which we take words written by children who have autism and are primarily nonverbal, and commission professional composers to set their words to music for voice and piano. It has been such a powerful project and we feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to share the words and abilities of these young writers. I am writing because David Russ, a resident of Rockaway Park, recommended we reach out to you.
He mentioned you write a column, ‘Life With Our 'Artistic' Child,’ and that you might be interested in our project. I just started reading your column online and wanted to say how much I'm enjoying it. I wish I had found it sooner!” Here’s a snapshot of a poem-song written by 16-yearold nonverbal Lynx Project’s songwriter, Sameer Dahar: “Your music emerges sound and feeling. Autism emerges senses with silence. Marriage too beautiful to describe. Make my poem opera manifest a hurricane of sound and madness.” Readers, I write poetry, spoken word and prose, but even at my best, I could never match the unabashed soul emanated in Dahar’s words. I started to think about my daughter, and how she loves music, and could capture and retain a tune only after hearing it once. But could she actually tap her own words to a song? After speaking with both Kahn, a former NYC-based soprano opera singer; and co-founder, Megan Moore, a mezzo-soprano performer, who are both accomplished violinists, I learned that these children practice Rapid Prompting Method (RPM). RPM was created by Soma Mukhopadhyay, a native of India, who developed RPM to instruct her son, Tito, who is now a published writer and poet, in spite of his severe autism. Spring Cleaning: A Guide By Adam Magniccari
If you’re anything like me, a list may be at the top of my “tool box” to get anything done. Without it, it’s hard to even remember everything that needs to be done to keep a house in order, so this week I thought I’d give everyone a guide to keep everything in order for the spring. We’re splitting it into two parts, so be sure to look out for Part Two next week! • Inspect, and possibly change out HVAC filters. Many experts will say to change the filters monthly, but that’s not always necessary. For smaller families without pets or allergies, you’ll
likely be okay changing the filters every two to three months. If the filter is dirty, change it out, otherwise inspect it again next month. I’ve also been told by professionals to go with cheaper filters and replace them more often versus going with the expensive filters. • Clean kitchen sink disposal. There are a bunch of ways to do this, (check out Rockaway Times archives for the entire article) but the handiest and best all-around solution seems to be vinegar ice cubes. Put some vinegar in an ice tray and let it freeze, then run the ice cubes through the disposal. It freshens it, but as a bonus, ice sharp-
Buckley's-Kennedy’s Run This Sunday Put on your running shoes and come out for a good cause. The 38th Annual Buckley’s-Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run is Sunday, May 20. The annual Buckley-Kennedy’s run, which was started by the late Jimmy Buckley, used to go from Buckley’s Restaurant in Brooklyn to Kennedy’s in Breezy Point. Now, the route is much shorter, as a 5K that starts near the Army Reserve Center on State Road in Breezy Point. The tradition continues each year because it’s all for a good cause. The race benefits HeartShare, an organization
that offers human services, especially to those with developmental disabilities. The event has raised more than $100,000 for the organization. This year’s race is also being held in memory of Richie Bollman, Terry Flaherty and Pat Tracy. The race starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Those interested in participating can register online at www.heartshare.org/ events. Fees are $15-$30. There will also be day-of registration from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. near the start line. The race is followed by a family fun day picnic at the Breezy Point Ball Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be live music by Head Over Heels, DJ Suds, games and rides and food and drinks. ens the blades. You’re welcome. • Inspect your fire extinguisher(s). We’ll assume that you already know how to use a fire extinguisher. Maintaining it really doesn’t require much on a yearly basis. There is usually a dial on it to show you it is pressurized. Make sure it has proper pressure. Also make sure that it is easily accessible and nothing is blocking it. • Test smoke/carbon dioxide detectors. Another simple task; your detectors should have a “test” button. If the alarm sounds, you’re good to go. If not, replace batteries immediately and test again. If it still doesn’t sound, it’s possible there’s simply corrosion on the battery terminal, and it won’t detect new batteries. Clean it and try again. If it still doesn’t work, you’ll likely need a new detector. • Test garage door auto-reverse feature. In 1993, federal law required all garage doors to have this feature after multiple child deaths. Test every month by placing a 2×4 on the ground where the door would close. It
The Rockaway Times should reverse after a second or so when the door hits the wood. Also test the photoelectric sensors, if you have them, by placing something in front of them (not your body). If the door doesn’t immediately go back up, you have a problem. • Run water and flush toilets in unused spaces. This mostly applies to guest bathrooms, or any other sinks/water sources you don’t use on a regular basis. The idea is to prevent grime or any other kind of build up. Regularly running a little bit of water through will prevent this. • Give your house a deep clean. Take one Saturday every six months with your whole family, and give the whole house a proper deep clean. Appliances, windows, dusting every nook and cranny (including the basement), etc. Keeping things clean and not letting dirt/ grime/dust build up over years and years will help keep your home in tip-top shape. Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament This Saturday On Saturday, May 19, Rockaway will remember Ryan Rudden through the sport he loved—hockey. The Ryan Rudden Memorial Hockey Tournament is this weekend. On Saturday, all are invited to play in or watch this memorial roller hockey event that honors the late Ryan Rudden. Rudden was just 17-years-old when he was killed in a car accident on August 21, 2002. The local was a hockey player, so each year, family and friends remember him by playing his favorite sport. The tournament will be held at the Beach 108th Hockey Rink near the boardwalk. The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the first puck drop at 10 a.m. For those who’d like to play, it’s $40 per player, which includes three games and a jersey. The day will also feature music by DJ Willy Gill, raffles, food, and a NYCountry Swag
Pop-up Shop. Proceeds go to the Captain Timothy Stackpole Foundation. There will be an after-party at Healy’s Pub from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. There is a $10 cover and drinks will be at happy hour prices.
