Concessions Open Friday By Katie McFadden

Summer is starting a little early. The weather is finally starting to warm up and the boardwalk concessions are opening on Friday, a week ahead of Memorial Day Weekend. The concessions are back, and opening weekend will be full of new and old treats and plenty of live music and fun. At the Beach 106th Concession, Caracas and Brothers are back in action. Brothers will be serving up some healthy breakfast options starting at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and you can get your arepas and sangria at Caracas starting at 11 a.m. If you head there for some after-work fun, Big Squid will be performing starting at 6 p.m. for the kickoff party. Head on down to Beach 97th, the largest concession of the bunch, to check out some of the new and old vendors.

Returning to Beach 97th are Low Tide Bar, Breezy BBQ, Uma's, Lobster Joint, City Sticks, La Cevicheria, Bolivian Llama Party and La Fruiteria. Rockaway Rar Bar will also host some seafood events throughout the summer. New this year is Peaches Picnic, featuring picnic-style fare with locally-sourced fruits and vegetables, plus grab and go snacks. Newcomer Super Burrito featuring Northern Carolina-style burritos will also make its debut. Starting at 4 p.m., the party will get started with a DJ set by New Guy, live music by the Wild Yaks and a post-show dance party featuring Brother Nature and Baby Love. Down on Beach 86th Street, Rippers will once again be serving up burgers, hotdogs, drinks and more starting Friday. On Beach 17th Street, DredSurfer Grill remains open year-round, but their big

kickoff events will be on Memorial Day. On Monday, May 29, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be a salsa on the beach party with performances by Ed Martinez, Chico Alvarez and his Conjunto Sabor Quintet. At 5 p.m., the Red Hot Radio party starts with DJ Steve Austin and DJ Elly. Parts of Riis Park Beach Bazaar (RPBB) remain open all year-round, with chef Whitney Aycock holding down the fort over the winter. Whit’s End has closed for the season, but Aycock is still serving up pizzas. Many favorites will be coming back to join Whit come Memorial Day weekend. Fletcher's BBQ, Ed & Bev's, Oaxaca Tacos, Coney Shack and Ample Hills Creamery are all returning. Local businesses like By The Beach Cocos, Eat MUD (formerly Paleo Factory), Cuisine by Claudette and Boarders Surf Shop will also be back. Some new vendors will also be joining the

lineup, including Rockaway Clam Shack, Chick'n'Cone and Sausage Hero. Besides food, there will be plenty of fun at RPBB this summer, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There will be free live music every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holiday. They will be there for Rockaway Beach Volleyball, which starts on Wednesday, May 24. Every Tuesday there will be Killer Karaoke with DJ Nicky B, the only oceanfront karaoke in New York City. RPBB will also host National Parks Service Campfire Thursdays. They will also have beach chairs and umbrellas for rent. For their full lineup of music and other events, check out http://riisparkbeachbazaar.com. The beach will officially be open and guarded starting Saturday, May 27. There will be an opening ceremony with NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, at 10 a.m. at the Beach 94th Street Plaza.

ONE SIXTEEN LOOKS SWEET SO FAR By Kevin Boyle

The Marcal Group released renderings for the new development slated for Beach 116th, which was first announced in The Rockaway Times in August 2016. Initially called Seaside Landing, the project now goes by One Sixteen, and will include 90 condos, which developers hope will fetch somewhere between $500-600 per square foot with the lower end units starting around $300,000. The lead principal is Mark Caller who said the 8-story condo will be “a magnificent building.” The design allows for many of the residents to have balconies with ocean and bay views. According to its newly launched website, One Sixteen will have an attended lobby, parking, and a fitness center. There will be commercial space on the ground floor. The buildings will conform to new city codes addressing flooding and resiliency. The overall development includes four buildings, but the initial phase will consist of two. One will be condos, one on the west side of Beach 116th. The second building will be on Beach 117th Street. This building will consist of 60-70 affordable rental units for seniors. The other buildings, one on the east side of each 116th Street (also condos) and the other on Beach 115th Street (also affordable units)

are at least two years away. Caller said the affordable units will be based on a percentage Area Median Income but that number has yet to be determined. The new website and rebranding were announced in advance of an official offering plan, some months away. An offering plan will have specifics about amenities, landscaping, common areas and such. Caller said he expects actual construction to begin in two months' time. The marketing and sales will be spearheaded by Compass, a real estate company with offices in New York, Boston, San Francisco, Miami and the Hamptons. Caller said he would welcome local realtors to join the sales effort as well. The architect on the project is Fischer + Makooi, a company with large commercial and residential projects in its portfolio. The interior designer is Jalbert Architectes based in Montreal. The news of the fleshed-out plans was covered by several media outlets last week which prompted a great wave of initial interest, Caller said. He’s been watching the other new development in Rockaway: the ferry. “It will be nice having the shuttle on 116th going to the ferry.” For more information and additional renderings go to LiveAtOneSixteen.com

Look! Up In The Sky. It’s A Car The New York World’s Fair in 1964 and 1965 was a big deal. It was so great everybody wanted to see the next one, which was called Expo 67 in Montreal. That one must’ve been a dud because nobody can name another that came after. We’ve even had them in the United States. Knoxville kinda rings a bell but don’t try telling me you remember New Orleans or, yikes, the San Antonio version. San Antonio, a world’s fair? Who knew? Right before New York, Seattle had a World’s Fair. Seattle wasn’t a great metropolis but it was a big enough deal to inspire an Elvis movie, It Happened at the World’s Fair. Maybe Epcot and Disney World and places like that ruined World Fairs, I don’t know. The amusement parks have certainly pushed World

Fairs to the far corners of the earth. This year, the World’s Fair is in Astana, Kazakhstan. It’s a 16-hour flight if you were wondering. And speaking of flying, that’s really the point about this week’s column. You know what the great New York World’s Fair did? It created huge expectations for two things. A monorail to replace the subway and Jetpacks. The New York exhibit rolled out as the space age was developing and plans for a moon landing were on the drawing board. If they could put a man on the moon they could certainly make the George Jetson jetpack a reality for the rest of us. Turns out, it was easier to fake the moon landing than fake personal jetpacks. Fifty odd years later, people are still taking the A train instead of a monorail. And fifty odd years later, people are still taking the A train because they don’t have a

personal jetpack. And that’s bull, man. We were promised progress. We got diddly. Yeah, ok, we got the ferry. But they had them 150 years ago. That’s progress? Ah, my tech savvy pals tell me, don’t be so impatient. Stop complaining about Select Bus Service choking Woodhaven. Stop holding out hope for the Queensrail, the reactivation of a track that could get you to Manhattan from Rockaway in 35 minutes. And forget the jetpack. It’s Uber and some Germans, they say. Better than a jetpack. Huh? Uber. Uber Germans? Sounds ominous. You know Uber? Yea, I know Uber. Well, Uber is starting to use driverless cars. But that’s just a necessary step in their ultimate goal. They and some German guys are building flying taxis. They take off and land vertically and are quiet. And won’t have human pilots. There’s a race to get there first.

Companies are even partnering with real estate companies so they can establish landing pads on buildings. They’re already working with the Federal Aviation Agency on routes and such. Oh, real estate tip: buy buildings with flat roofs. It sounds nuts, right? Never happen? Well, they’re saying Dallas and Dubai are two cities that will test these things in 2020! It’s true that there are some technological things to be ironed out – like increased battery life--but 2020? We won’t have to wait long to find out if it’s a bunch of bull or not. Just one thing to keep in mind. The Wright Brothers' first flight in 1903 went 120 feet. Just eleven years later the airplane was being used in World War 1. So here’s a real estate tip: buy buildings with flat roofs. And then add metered parking. You’ll end up so rich you’ll be able to afford a jetpack.

Buckley’s-Kennedy’s Run on Sunday Put on those sneakers and come out for a good cause. The 37th Annual Buckley’s-Kennedy’s 5K Charity Run is Sunday, May 21. The annual Buckley-Kennedy’s run, which was started by the late Jimmy Buckley, used to go from Buckley’s Restaurant in Brooklyn to Kennedy’s in Breezy Point. Now, the route is much shorter, as a 5K that starts near the Army Reserve Center on State Road in Breezy Point. The tradition continues each year because it’s all for a good cause. The race benefits HeartShare, an organization that offers human services, especially to those with developmental disabilities. The event has raised as much as $100,000 for the organization. This year’s race is also being held in memory of Kevin “The King” Walsh and Pudgie Walsh. The race starts at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Those interested in

participating can register online at www.heartshare.org/ events until noon on Friday, May 19. Fees are $15-$30. There are also registration events at both Buckley’s and Kennedy’s during opening hours on Thursday, May 18, Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20. At 2 p.m. on Saturday, there will be a special registration party with music, food, giveaways and beer specials at Buckley’s. There will also be day-of registration from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. near the start line. The race is followed by a family fun day picnic at the Breezy Point Ball Field from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be live music by Head Over Heels, DJ Suds, games and rides and food and drinks. Non-runners can attend the picnic for $20. For more information, head to www. heartshare.org/events or call 718-422-3347.

The Riis Park Pitch and Putt Golf Course will reopen within a few weeks and will continue to be operated by Global Golf on what Park officials are calling a “short term basis.” In late November, 2016 the National Park Service issued a Request For Proposals (RFP) looking for potential lessees to take

over both Pitch and Putt and the driving range and mini-golf course on Flatbush Avenue. Although there were multiple bids, NPS chose to stay with Global Golf which has managed the facilities in recent years. Global will also continue to operate the driving range, reportedly the largest of its kind in Brooklyn.

***** Summer parking rules have gone into effect. For those uptown, make sure to move your cars off the street before midnight on Friday, so that you do not get a ticket. ***** It may have taken a while, but it’s finally starting to feel like summer. Nothing says summer like riding your bike to the concessions. They’ll be opening on May 19. ***** Hey Esther, what’s the story? Esther Konig, who lives in Belle Harbor, owns that strip of dilapidated empty stores near the beach on 116th including the old Sand Bar. In August 2016, she told a crowd that she’d have some news on the place in “three or four months.” Well, people keep asking us what’s going on, and we keep asking Esther. But that’s gotten us nowhere. It’s a shame…. ***** You know what Sunday, May 21 is? It’s a Day at The Races at the Knights of Columbus on Beach 90th Street. The fun starts at 2:30 p.m. and the donation is a measly five bucks. Sounds like fun and sounds like a deal! ***** Look out for ticks! A local woman found one on the back of her daughter’s ear last weekend. She said her daughter hadn’t been anywhere but Rockaway. With the threat of Lyme disease and the new Powassan virus, it’s important to stay extra vigilant. ***** One of these boats is not like the others. Some may notice a red, black and white vessel, that looks different from the other ferry boats. The Provincetown 111 has joined the fleet for a few weeks as the city awaits more new boats. ***** Don’t drive over the cobblestones! Drivers occasionally cut across the cobblestone area of the U-turn at the beach end of Beach 116th Street as a

short cut. It’s a no-no. We’ve heard an unmarked police car has been ticketing people who drive their cars across the cobblestones. So there’s your warning. ***** NYCountry Swag is a special events and clothing brand (which you already know if you know local Stephanie Wagner!). The company has created a "Hero Collection" in honor of the fire and police departments across the country. This month, a portion of all sales will be donated to the FDNY Timothy Stackpole Foundation. The mission of the foundation “is to build a legacy of small acts of kindness where need arises, providing the gifts of our talents and resources, and bring hope when a hand reaches out in need.” Timmy Stackpole was killed on 9/11. His family and many friends live in Rockaway. Go to nycountryswag.com to see the Hero Collection. ***** You might remember a piano that showed up on the boardwalk at Beach 86th Street last summer. Well, you’ll see one again on June 6. Sing for Hope, a nonprofit making arts accessible to all, will place 62 pianos throughout the five boroughs. One will be placed on the boardwalk at Beach 86th, just for three weeks. The group is looking for a few people to keep an eye on it. “Piano Buddies” will keep the instrument clean and cover it in inclement weather. Go to singforhope.formstack.com/ forms/piano_buddy or email E.Ormsbee@singforhope.org if you want to be a buddy. ***** Good question raised by surf columnist, Alex Karinsky. Why aren’t the remnants of the old wood jetties aka “death sticks” removed from the beaches? When they are submerged because of a high tide they’re particularly hazardous. The City goes overboard with Vision Zero regulations in the name of safety. Well, these sticks are certainly not safe and the City knows about them. Mayor de Blasio? Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver? Hello??

Holocaust Survivor, Ruth Pagirsky, Tells Her Story By Katie McFadden

In 1933, 8-year-old Ruth Wachner, who was living in Berlin, Germany, experienced anti-Semitism for the first time. “I had a lot of friends from the playground that I went ice skating with and Clara and I were very close. Her mother was very ill and whenever my family was going on an outing, like to the zoo, Clara would come with us. She was Christian, but that didn’t seem to matter. That was until one day, I ran to her house to play and her mother wouldn’t let me in the house. I couldn’t understand why. She said that Clara is now a member of the Hitler Youth and she cannot play with Jewish children. That was the first experience I had where someone didn’t like me because I was of a certain religion,” Ruth Wachner Pagirsky, now 91-years-old, recalled as she sat at a table in her Belle Harbor home. That memory was just the beginning of a harrowing story of how Pagirsky, a Jewish youth, endured World War II, and came out as a survivor of the Holocaust. She was the only one to live, out of her close family members. After the war was over and Pagirsky stepped foot in America on June 19, 1946, no one was interested in hearing her story. But it was the last words her father ever said to her that had carried her through horrendous hardships and later led her to share her story over and over again. “You my child shall live, you shall live to tell it all,” Jehoshua Wachner told her, as he kissed her goodbye, before being taken away by German guards in April 1942. After gaining the courage to tell it, Pagirsky has made it her mission to share her story. She volunteers at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, where she shares her story with visitors, makes school visits as a guest speaker, and in 2013, she published Memoirs, a written ac-

count of her story so that her family would have something to hold onto and a way to let her story live on. Memoirs isn’t an easy read. It’s even harder hearing Pagirsky share her story in person, as she recalls the horrific details of her past. On May 9, a day after Pagirsky’s 91st birthday and the 72nd anniversary of the end of the Holocaust, she shared her story with The Rockaway Times. Ruth Wachner was born in Berlin in 1926. Before the war, she had a happy, comfortable childhood with her brother, Benjamin, her mother, or Mutti Regina, and her father, Jehoshua. In the 1930s, as Adolf Hitler became more powerful, anti-Semitism became more apparent. Being told she couldn’t play with her Christian friend, Clara, was just the beginning. Her father owned a company that was a large importer of rugs and he would often travel to places like Persia and Turkey for business purposes. It was common for him to send gifts from his travels back to his children. Pagirsky specifically remembers the dolls she received from different countries. In 1936, while her father was supposed to be on a business trip, she received

a package. “I was so excited, thinking it was a new doll. I opened the box and found my father’s clothing, everything down to his underwear, completely soaked in blood,” she said. The clothes were accompanied with a note that read “Juden Raus”- “Jews Get Out.” A few weeks earlier, her father was approached by an employee who demanded that he hand over the rug business to him, simply because he was Jewish. Her father fired the man. Two weeks later, her father was on the way to the train station to go on a business trip, when he was arrested and taken to Camp Dachau, where he was beaten mercilessly. The box of bloody clothing was the first sign that something was wrong. Shortly after, an SS Man, under Hitler’s rule, came to the family house and told them they had 48 hours to leave Germany. On May 2, 1936, Pagirsky, along with her brother and mother, were put on a train to Poland, where her parents' family lived, and where the anti-Semitism was even stronger. Despite the hatred, Pagirsky and her family were able to live a relatively normal life. Her father was released from Dachau and located his family. They lived together in an apartment in Katowice.

Aside from the hardships of war, Pagirsky faced personal struggles as a child who suffered from several illnesses. In August 1939, she became extremely ill with a fever, and became incapacitated. Doctors presumed it was polio or rheumatic fever and gave her two weeks to live. In September, as bombs rained down around them, living in Katowice became too dangerous. Her father was forced to assist the military because of his ability to drive. Pagirsky and the rest of her family had no choice but to relocate by horse and buggy. They made their way towards Krakow as Pagirsky’s condition worsened. As they came across a Catholic hospital along the way, Pagirsky’s mother pled that they help her ill daughter. A nurse told her, “There is no room for Jewish children.” A Jewish man came across Pagirsky’s crying mother and offered to let the family stay with him and his wife as Pagirsky recovered. After coming back from Temple one day, the man approached Pagirsky and called her a blessed child. The Catholic hospital near Krakow had been hit by a bomb, leaving several casualties. After hearing Pagirsky’s story of survival, it seems that the man’s claim of Ruth being blessed, had some truth to it. “That’s what happened throughout my life in the war. There was always somebody who was sent to help me,” Pagirsky said. But it’s hard to believe she came out alive. Pagirsky and her family eventually made their way to Brzostek, where her grandparents lived. Her grandmother, who was a healer, used natural remedies to nurse Pagirsky back to health, and she overcame her illness, despite being told she wouldn’t make it. The Germans invaded Poland in 1942 and the cavalry took over the town of Brzostek, forcContinued on page 38

Dan Guarino. That’s a name you’ve probably heard, whether its through seeing his byline in local newspapers, seeing him perform at local music venues, his involvement with the Rockaway Artists Alliance, or at numerous events around Rockaway and Broad Channel. You may see that name elsewhere this year— on the ballot for City Council.

At the Community Board 14 meeting on Tuesday, May 9, Guarino announced his run for the role currently held by Councilman Eric Ulrich. As a Democrat, he will pursue City Council for District 32, covering Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Neponsit, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Rockaway Park, Roxbury, South Ozone Park,

West Hamilton Beach and Woodhaven. Our fellow colleague, a former reporter for The Rockaway Times, and now editor of our sister publication, The North Shore Local in Staten Island, explained his decision to pursue politics. “The main reason I’m deciding to run is because I love these communities. They’re all different in their own way. This is home for me and I want to take what I’ve been doing for so many years by supporting and promoting them as much as I can, and take that a step further,” Guarino, who has lived in Broad Channel for nearly 30 years and Far Rockaway for before then, said. Guarino believes he has the qualifications to make him a great fit for the role. “Because I haven’t been in politics before, I’m coming in from a totally different angle. I’m coming in from seeing things as a resident and a consumer. I think that gives me a different perspective. I do a lot of listening. I move in a lot of different circles and I hear people’s concerns, especially with working for local community newspapers over the past five years. I’ve gotten to see a lot, hear people’s issues and really understand what their concerns are. I really want to do what I can to address these issues and continue to support local businesses and organizations,” he said. In addition to being involved with local newspapers, Guarino stepped in to serve as president of the Rockaway Artists Alliance and bring it back to life, following Hurricane Sandy. Since he took over the role, RAA has gotten some worldwide recognition through partnerships with the Museum of Modern Art. “As president, I have taken the organization, that was devastated after Hurricane Sandy, to a world-class organization that has brought positive attention to the Rockaways and that celebrates local artists and art education,” he said. Prior to working in the news business, Guarino gained leadership experience as manager

of Time Warner Cable for nearly 20 years. “I managed five supervisors and was responsibe for about 1,000 people and 1.5 million customers. I learned a lot about how business and corporate works, problem solving and getting things done. As councilman, I would be sure to get things done for these local communities,” Guarino said. What are some of the things Guarino would focus on as councilman? “I think the number one issue for a lot of these areas is transportation. That doesn’t just mean getting people back and forth. It is a connection to more job opportunities and business opportunities and bringing people in to boost the local economy, so we need to focus on improving it. Another big issue is the economy. I want to ensure that city agencies are doing everything they can to support small businesses and ensure they survive, especially during that first year when businesses struggle the hardest. Some other things to consider are environmental issues, especially after Sandy. “I’m a lifelong New Yorker and as far as I can remember, this city has centered around Manhattan, but these other areas are starting to get recognition and I want to ensure our communities get their fair share and the attention they deserve. That’s why I want to make sure that when a decision is being made about the community, that community input is taken into high consideration.” Guarino will have to face the first hurdle of actually getting on the ballot for the primary for City Council, which will be held on September 17. This requires getting hundreds of signatures of support in a process that begins June 6. Those who want to help, can register as a volunteer to collect signatures at his campaign site, www.tinyurl.com/dan2017. You can also contact Guarino at danforcitycouncil17@gmail. com or follow his campaign on Facebook: Dan Guarino for City Council.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Football and Head Injuries For more than a century, head trauma has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases later in life, especially dementia/Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). These conditions have been reported to be substantial in those who played contact sports, especially football. Recent publicity has focused on the dangers of football, especially as played in high school, college, and professionally. There have been links claimed to chronic traumatic encephalopathy later in life, which have some people calling for an outright ban on American football.

Football is arguably America’s most popular sport. It is a collision sport where head trauma and concussions are common, which in theory may have implications for brain health later in life. But football does have redeeming qualities, especially physical fitness, which may be protective for brain disease later in life. A while back, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota did a study of football players from two Rochester high schools who played football between 1946 and 1956. They then reviewed the medical records of these players and compared them to non-football play-

ing students and the general population. They found no increased incidence of neurologic brain disease in the football players. As a follow-up to that study they did a second study, which looked at football players in the same schools who played football between 1956 and 1970. They also looked at non-football playing athletes (swimmers, basketball players, and wrestlers) who played during the same period. They identified 296 football players and 190 athletes engaged in other sports. They then reviewed the medical records of these athletes. Again they found no difference in brain diseases later in life in the two groups. It is interesting to note that football between 1946 and 1970 was very different from today’s football, both from the standpoint of protective equipment and player size. There were no penalties for headhunting and spearing. Today’s players are bigger, stronger, and faster than those of years ago. Also, it wasn’t until 1980 that the first standards for equipment like helmets

Page 15 and pads were adopted. Also, unlike today, most head injuries went unnoticed or unreported, unless they were severe. If you got your “bell rung,” you just kept playing. The authors of this study are quick to point out that the results of this study should not be misinterpreted. There is indisputable evidence linking head trauma and brain disease. They point out that this was a small study and more, larger studies are needed. Also, more study needs to be done to determine whether the degree of physical fitness required for football, offsets the negative effects of head trauma. Additionally, the authors note that they only looked at high school players, not college or professional players. So more work needs to be done. In my opinion, the increasing awareness of head injuries in football is a good thing, but I don’t believe that eliminating the game entirely is the answer. The Holmehurst Hotel/Inn, was noted as being in Edgemere, BUT was actually on Beach 63rd Street in Arverne. First noted as the Cottage Hotel in 1908, it was next written as the Holmehurst when

it burned to the ground in 1909. This hotel had the shortest lifespan in Arverne and was the first great hotel fire in the Rockaways. Guests were routed from sleep in the early morning hours to safety. This is the ONLY known photo of the Holmehurst Hotel.

Wave Prep Gives Back

The scholars of Wave Preparatory Academy-PS 362 in Far Rockaway know the importance of giving back. That’s why they make it their mission to practice community service each month. The Wave Prep students have been very busy over the past few months. The school’s name stands for Worldy, Accountable, Virtuous, Excellent (WAVE), and they practice some of these goals through charity. Since the school year started, the students and their family collect certain items and donate them to those in need. Each month comes with a specific mission. In September/October, the children collected and donated treats for children with cancer at Memori-

al Sloan Kettering. In November, they made “boxes of love” for active military members. In December, they gave hats to the homeless for Bowery Mission. In January/ February, collected more than 500 pounds of soup for City Harvest. In March/April, they donated new baby items to the newborns at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Over the past month, the school has been collecting pennies. They’ve raised more than $2,800 so far, which will be donated to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Some of the students that make donations have an opportunity to hand-deliver the goodies on a field trip. Each child is given a raffle ticket for every item they donate. The tickets are put in a class raffle and one student from each class is picked to attend the field trip. Scholars have been given tours, listened to lectures, taught some history, and have even been supplied a lunch from Memorial Sloan Kettering, The Bowery Mission in Manhattan, and St. Johns Episcopal Hospital. Keep up the great work, kids!

New Boardwalk Concessions Coming to Edgemere By Kami-Leigh Agard

There’s a new group of boardwalk concessions coming to town. Starting weekends in July through August, walk/ bike/ carpool/ bus/ skate — EAST, or as locals would say, “downtown,” and check out the Edgemere Food Fair & Market that will feature an eclectic group of vendors selling food and novelty items from Beach 50th to Beach 30th Streets, and with the addition of live music, all of your senses will be engaged. The brainchild behind this endeavor with the NYC Parks Department? None other than Charles Jacobs, proprietor of Dred Surfer Grill, well-known for his sumptuous beach fare of standard burgers and hot dogs, not to mention Caribbean savory specialties like jerk chicken on Beach 17th Street. “I was able to secure this fiveyear contract with the Parks Department to run these concessions,” Jacobs said. “I want to show that the east end of the peninsula can generate and attract as much activity that is so centered around Rockaway Beach. The east end is more centrally located near several train lines and bus stops, and not to mention, our beaches are more pristine. Beach 30th for example, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful and clean beaches on the peninsula, but folks don’t know that. Unless they come and indulge in the experience, the east end remains under the radar,” Jacobs said. Jacobs said that he’s looking for more vendors to sign up. He’s currently seeking food, apparel, craft and jewelry vendors. “For those looking to sell food, they have to get a special event permit from the NYC Health Department. NYC has standard strict requirements when it comes to vending food. For those who want to sell novelty items, they should also get a vending permit to protect themselves with filing taxes and such.

NOW OPEN Our vending fee is reasonable, starting from $60 up to $70 for the entire season,” Jacobs said. For interested vendors, present your price list and itinerary of items offered to Jacobs via email: edgemerefoodfair@ gmail.com or contact him via Facebook at: edgemerefoodfair or Instagram at edgemerefoodfair. The deadline to apply is June 16. Nicole Russell, proprietor of Last Dragon Pizza will be one of the concessionaires in the Edgemere Food Fair & Market. “Most of Rockaway’s population resides in the east end, and we just want residents — both east and west —and those down for the day, to experience the beauty of the beaches in this area. The Edgemere Food Fair & Market is just going to be about enjoying the beautiful beach, and indulging in great food and some retail therapy on the boardwalk’s east end. This summer is going to be a magical experience for all of us,” Russell said. Be on the lookout for more fun with Dred Surfer this summer. This August 19, Dred Surfer Grill in collaboration with Senator James Sanders office and the Parks Department, will be hosting a Caribbean Carnival with participants adorned in colorful costumes, festively parading down the east end of the boardwalk, all to the tune of tropical soca music. Keep reading The Rockaway Times for more details on how to sign up, get your costume and join in the “wine up” down the boardwalk!

Scholars Academy Stunt Team Has Something to Cheer About By Kami-Leigh Agard

With basket tosses catapulting ‘flyers’ into the air, combined with team members executing athletic precision with tumbles, backhand springs, toe touch jumps and pyramid configurations, the Scholars’ Academy Seawolves Varsity Stunt Team is not only defying gravity, but the traditional perception of cheerleading. Stunt is a relatively new sport in the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL), an organization, founded in 1903, that promotes student athletics in NYC public schools. It is a new form of competitive, tournament-style cheerleading that removes the crowd-leading, pom-pom-carrying elements, and instead emphasizes gymnastics, teamwork and rhythm. The focus is on technical and athletic components of cheer, showcasing partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling. For the first time since PSAL’s stunt co-ed league was launched in 2013, the Seawolves made the playoffs this year in the Varsity Queens A League and have ‘badges of honor’ testifying their hard work and dedication. “It’s been amazing what our stunt team has accomplished in such a short period of time. It’s been a hard road,” Judith Doran, Seawolves Stunt Team coach, also a social studies teacher at Scholars, said. “Stunt cheerleading was only kicked off by PSAL four years ago. At the time, I was already coaching a cheerleading team at Scholars, but always wanted to gear the team into stunt, which is a more athletic part of cheer than the traditional pom-pom cheerleading. So when PSAL initially launched the pilot program for stunt in 2013, I encouraged students to try out, whether or not they had tumbling experience, and we were accepted within a short two-month season,” Doran said. According to Doran, there are students who joined the Seawolves’ Stunt team when they were freshmen, and four years later are now graduating seniors. “Making the playoffs is so sig-

nificant for them. Last year we had a poor ranking, but with all their hard work and dedication, I’m so proud that we made the playoffs this year,” Doran said. “To make sure we were guaranteed space to practice in the gym, as the more popular and established teams such as boys’ basketball, which always has first dibs, these dedicated girls would come every morning at 6:30 a.m. to practice before their academic school day began. Then with many of them having finals and Advanced Placement exams to study for, we started practicing 5-7 p.m. every evening and on weekends. “With this kind of sport, it is very difficult to practice when you have some people out. This year we had a lot of injuries. Some girls got concussions, others a broken elbow, sprained wrists and ankles, black eyes and bruises. However, these girls wore these injures like badges of honor. This is a dangerous sport and I always emphasize that

·

safety is number one. We even had a team of Hofstra University stunt cheerleaders come in to do a clinic showing the girls how to execute their moves safely, as well as new moves they could try to give them a competitive edge,” Doran said. According to Danielle Kulish-Atehortua, a Seawolves Stunt Team mom of Kaylee Atehortura, who brought this story to The Rockaway Times, “Coach Doran puts in so many dedicated and loving hours with these girls. She goes above and beyond her call of duty to make sure our girls are safe. The day my daughter, Kaylee, got a concussion, she repeatedly called to check on my daughter. The amazing thing was after Kaylee got a concussion, she insisted on going to the practices, even though she had to look from the sidelines. She did not want to miss a thing and awaited her chance to jump back in. “I feel like the boys teams usually get all the recognition,

but the stunt team’s girls need a shout out. Stunt is a dangerous sport, and these girls have weathered and accomplished so much in a short space of time.” Freshman, Kaylee Atehortua, said, “This has been my first season. I had been competitively dancing for 11 years, but quit because it was a hostile environment. The girls were rude, judgmental and competitive in a negative way, taking every chance to put you down. The stunt team is so different. Instead of criticizing, we help each other. After my concussion, I still went to practices everyday just to watch because I didn’t want to miss anything. And as I was watching my teammates, I’m like, ‘Oh my God! I can’t believe I am in this team.’ The next time someone says that stunt isn’t a sport, I’m going to bring them over to see what we do. Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of recognition compared to the other teams, who have these beautiful uniforms and better practice schedules. I would just be satisfied if we could got nicer uniforms to boost our confidence and school spirit.” Another Seawolves stunt teammate, Julianna, who joined the team three years ago, and is now in her junior year, said, “I love stunt because it’s a sport that builds trust with my teammates. I am a ‘flyer,’ meaning I’m the one that gets hurled into the air, trusting that my bases and backs will catch me. The most exhilarating moment is walking onto the mat in a competition. It’s such an adrenaline kick! Many people do not define stunt as a sport, but when they see us compete, it’s a laughing moment when we see the amazed looks on their faces.” Scholars’ Principal Brian O’Connell couldn’t be more pleased. “We are flipping over our stunt team! We are very proud of the growth, development, and accomplishments of the team under the leadership of Coach Doran. They work very hard, practicing before and after school hours. It’s a huge commitment. Their teamwork and trust is exceptional. Just watching the team, makes one’s heart jump! Go Seawolves!” O’Connell said.

IT TAKES ALL KINDS Recently I witnessed a bartender listening with a smile on his face to several tirades of a guest whose every other word was the F-word. Just the way he talked. And everything bothered him, obviously because he kept on using the word. This one said this and that one did that and on and on. The bartender listened, smiled, said a word or two and moved on. I asked the bartender why the guy talked like that and wasn’t he offended by his manner and language. The bartender said

with a smile “It takes all kinds. I have the filters.” I’ve been thinking about what he said. If we don’t immediately make a judgment relating to a person’s negative behavior, we have a better chance of understanding the source and finding ways of dealing with it. When it is an occurrence with someone we really do not know and a onetime meeting that is easy. We can do what the bartender did: smile, accept the person and put an inner filter to work so as

Page 29

not to take in something negative or offensive. When it is a person in our lives, however, that is different. “It takes all kinds” may be harder to accept. Acceptance doesn’t necessarily mean agreeing with or believing in, it is a matter of creating a balanced, peaceful space where things can be dealt with in an easier way. And gaining a perspective: Is that really important? Is it the small stuff? Can I accept certain behavior and do my best to be an example? Some things we cannot change. Some things we can change and have to find the courage to do so. Sometimes we need to understand the difference between what we can change and what we cannot change. “It takes all kinds” thinking brings us to looking beyond the evident, looking beyond the apparent, looking beyond. Most often there is no evil there, maybe insecurity, unawareness, non-openness, defensiveness, whatever from whenever in

someone’s life that caused certain behavior that is sometimes hard to take. If it really is not lifethreatening or detrimental to someone else’s well-being, why don’t we just let it go? We can. Perhaps first find an objective listener to whom you can vent – letting it out before letting it go! Really. Often, letting out with passionate, feeling words, whatever it is about, the person can often alleviate the holding of all the objections you may have. So let it out, then let it go. You may have to repeat several times to yourself, “let it go.” It does take all kinds, and sometimes we do have to filter to get through a work shift or a long day or a minor conflict at home, taking a kind stance. In the end, we are the better for it; we are not agitated by someone else’s words or actions, we are more peaceful, thereby, balanced and happy. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

“They call me a ‘miracle patient,’ but South Nassau saved my life.” NAME: CHARLES B. AGE: 73 HOMETOWN: Lynbrook CONDITION: Abdominal aortic aneurysm LIFE BEFORE SURGERY: In July 2014, I collapsed and was rushed to South Nassau’s emergency room. While in the ER, my wife was informed that I needed emergency surgery to repair a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. I was bleeding internally and was given a 5 percent chance of survival. LIFE AFTER SURGERY: I spent four months in rehabilitation. I’ve had a few setbacks since then and it’s been a long recovery process, but I’m getting stronger every day. WHY CHOOSE SOUTH NASSAU? South Nassau’s vascular team is fantastic. The surgeons and nurses tell me I’m their miracle patient. But if it wasn’t for their experience, teamwork and quick decisions, I wouldn’t be alive today.

To learn more about vascular services available at South Nassau, call 877-SOUTH-NASSAU or visit southnassau.org/vascular.

Recycle Old Cabinet Doors By Artie Wallace

If you’re remodeling your kitchen or know someone who is, don’t throw away the old cabinet doors. They are great for future DIYer projects. Here are a few ideas. Childs desk: By adding legs and a coat of paint you got a great little desk for a child. Chalkboard: Applying a coat of paint, then painting the inside panels with chalkboard paint, will give you a great chalkboard for quick notes. Photo collage: Paint the door, then using contact cement, add a fabric backing to the panels. Then use the contact cement to add photos to make a framed collage. A serving tray: A good coat of Rust-oleum paint and a handle on either end will make for a nice serving tray. For an added touch, paint the door two-toned or use stencils to add a design. Wall art:

Give it a nice coat of paint to start off with. Add your favorite saying or some artificial flowers and create your own wall art. Corkboard: Once again, add a coat of paint. Then using contact cement, glue on corkboard material. For two panel doors, you can paint the second panel with chalkboard paint. Magnetic board: Hold your favorite recipes in place or leave notes for the kids with a magnetic board. Magnetic paint can be bought at most major home improvement stores and can be used as a primer, then topped off with a color of your choice. Homemade shutters: By carefully cutting out the panels and adding a fabric backing, you can easily make your own (indoor) window shutters to dress up any room. Some of these projects are planned for future DIYer classes. To find out more about the classes or send me your ideas for future articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

On With The Motley “You know I'm a dreamer, but my heart's of gold. I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low. Just when things went right, it doesn't mean they were always wrong. Just take this song, and you'll never feel left all alone….My heart's like an open book, for the whole world to read. Sometimes nothing keeps me together at the seams…I'm on my way, I’m on my way, Home sweet home...” This song, “Home Sweet Home,” by American classic rock band, Mötley Crüe, is a nostalgic favorite of mine, because everyday in my own personal life and household, I am daily reminded that we are indeed the Motley Crew, all eternally grateful for our “Home Sweet Home” — with our beautiful, comedic, enchantingly complex, Soanirina. By definition, a motley crew is an informal expression for a roughly organized assembly of individuals of various backgrounds, appearance, and character. They are typified by containing characters of conflicting personality, varied backgrounds, political stances and, usually to the benefit of the group, a wide array of methods for overcoming adversity. And yes, in my daughter’s family, we fit the description. We span from various countries, complexions, cultural traditions, religious and political leanings, but at

the end of the day, we all are guerrillas, fighting for the best for our little eight-yearold girl with autism spectrum disorder. If you were a fly on the wall, during our morning routine, you would laugh, maybe even suggest coordinating a comedy sitcom. My daughter’s dad and I share custody of our daughter, and every morning religiously, together we get her dressed for school and put her on the school bus. As I am combing her hair, my grandmother and mom would start commenting on the news. They are uber conservative, both religiously and politically, so it makes quite a comedy routine with a back-and-forth banter with my daughter’s dad, who is more on the left, and artfully sarcastic. For example, as I am frantically chasing my daughter to sit in the chair to comb her hair, who to my consternation, stripped herself of her clothes, shoes, everything!, my grandmother and mom would bemoan the attacks on the president reported on the news. My daughter’s father starts chiming in, being as usual, the cunning devil’s advocate, with his own nonchalant, Trevor Noah-like hilarious, but punchy comments. Meanwhile, I am looking at the time, not caring a flying fig about what they are debating about, running after her, desperately shrieking,

“Soa! Come here, put your clothes back on, sit down, so I can comb your hair! The bus will be here soon!” As they continue in their comedic banter, with me chasing my daughter, (and trust me she is faster than multiple Olympic gold medal recipient, Usain Bolt), I shout, “Guys! Could you stop? Help!” Then when once she gets on the bus, I start to exhale, thinking now I have some time to focus on work. Then, I get a call from the school. “Soanirina has been crying all morning. She seems to be constipated. Perhaps, you should pick her up.” Cussing all profanities in my mind, I say, “No problem. Will be there in a jiffy.” However, once I appear at the school, my little minx is laughing. She deserves an academy award for most prolific dramatic actress. However, as initially stressed out and irritated I am, I literally melt when I see her toothy, cunning grin.

Page 35 So folks, we are indeed the Motley Crew. I have not even mentioned the other sides of the family, spanning from all over. But you know what? It all works out. Because as dysfunctional we all may seem, our daughter enjoys it. She does not talk, but trust me, judging from her eyes and laughter, she gets it. We are living la vida loca, but our little, energetic, beauty loves it all, because as ‘motley’ as we are, she knows intuitively that we all adore our little minx, and will never stop trying to keep it together for her, and to be honest, for our ‘motley’ family’s sanity. Together we lucidly know, that Rockaway, with our daughter and ‘motley crew’ family, will always be “Home Sweet Home.” Stay tuned for announcements about the next Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families Support Group in May! DOWNTOWN FAR ROCK’S STREETSCAPE WINS AWARD FOR DESIGN EXCELLENCE Downtown Far Rockaway’s Streetscape, a design project incorporating the Mayor’s Vision Zero strategies, is one of eight winners selected across the five boroughs for remarkable designs that create sustainable spaces, enhance neighborhoods and even preserve New York City history. Mayor Bill de Blasio, Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen, Public Design Commission President Signe Nielsen, and Executive Director of the Commission, Justin Moore announced the winners of the 35th Annual Awards for Excellence in Design on Thursday, May 11. The winning Far Rockaway Streetscape project, collaboratively spearheaded by the Department of Design and Construction, Department of Transportation, Department of Parks & Recreation and W Architecture and Landscape Architecture, included designs for Central Avenue, Mott Avenue, Beach 19th Street, Beach 20th Street, Beach

21st Street, and Beach 22nd Street. The project was selected for its comprehensive streetscape design, fostering a safer, more inviting, pedestrian experience in this central business district and transportation hub. As part of NYCxDESIGN – an annual citywide celebration of innovative art and design from around the world – this year’s awards recognize projects that help fulfill the de Blasio Administration’s OneNYC goals of building a more resilient city, engendering civic pride, sustainability and public service. “The best public projects are purposeful and use design to build a sense of community and civic pride,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “We commend the teams behind these critical and creative projects that will help build a stronger, more equitable city and improve services and recreational activities for every New Yorker.” The awards are given by the City’s Public Design Commission.

Truth Serum Youth Should Be Heard By Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet

It's that time of year, so why don't we play a little hardball? I've been actively involved in my community since the age of 16 and have attended Community Board 14 meetings for more than three years. That said, I must admit that I’ve never seen a more dysfunctional board than the one currently in place. A few of its members, dubbed "Pillars of the Community" (POC) by many, have done little to earn the moniker. I realize that statement may upset people, but I'm just keeping it real. Some are worthy of the title, but most are not. As my cousin used to tell me when I got offended by something that didn't apply to me, directly, "If the shoe fits…." I’m 22, and I’ve always felt young people’s viewpoints were not respected or wel-

comed at the meetings. That was recently confirmed. I dared to ask the hard questions and challenged a number of claims made by CB 14 members. The chaos that ensued was not only embarrassing, it was completely unnecessary. I thought Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus was shutting down for good. I guess not. The squabbling also made me realize there are people on the board that really don’t care about the community. Don’t take my word for it. Just listen carefully whenever they address the audience. It is always "my block," "their block" or "my side." Hello? CB 14 covers both ends of Rockaway, plus Broad Channel. It isn’t regulated to any specific block or neighborhood. If more people understood this fact, the better off we’d be as a community.

Another issue that needs to be addressed is the amount of time a person is allowed to speak. CB 14 guidelines state that you must show up early and add your name to the list of speakers. Huh? It's a public meeting! People should have an opportunity to speak at any point during the meeting, even if they only get two minutes. Now, CB 14 might defend the policy by stating it has to control the clock and maintain some sense of order. Well, past and current meetings have shown that the policy isn’t working. Then, to add insult to injury, people are often told…"You can't speak. Come early next time." That is an extremely arrogant and rude position to take, and board members should consider the fact that residents have to rush home after working nine or 10-hour shifts, help their children with homework, prepare dinner for their families and put their children to bed. If CB 14 chooses to adhere to its policy, then the least it can do is show a little more compassion and respect. Oh! Don’t get me started with CB 14’s wannabe Paul Ryan, whom you all know from his “Quiet!” “Excuse me!” and “Order!” The only thing missing is the stupid gavel. This is not the U.S. House of Representatives! Finally, I believe term limits should be imposed on CB 14. Many of the members are seniors and have sat on the board

for years. Truth be told, some of them have actually fallen asleep during the meetings. Let me be very clear. That’s not a diss. It’s an observation from a young member of the community who has concerns. I truly love and respect my elders. As a matter of fact, I have two mentors, ages 48 and 54, that I wouldn't trade for anyone in my age group. Ever! I just believe that CB 14 needs to adopt bold/new attitudes, ideas and policies going forward. The best way to do that is to incorporate young people who’ll stand up for Rockaway and not engage in the usual politics. I’ve lived in Rockaway all of my life, and opportunities for economic and personal growth have been (and continue to be) non-existent for thousands of young people on the peninsula. The economic, political and social policies supported by long-time CB 14 members are a major reason why. I'm calling on Queens Borough President Melinda Katz to do more to ensure that there is a stronger youth presence among CB 14’s members. I’m more than willing to assist with this, not just complain. I’ll catch you again soon, folks. (Jeffrey Williams-Maisonet is the founder of news site Rockaway Primetime Reporting. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR Continued from Page 12 ing most Jewish families into a confined part of town, with several families living together in a few homes. Around Purim 1942, Pagirsky awoke to the sound of bullhorns. Everyone was forced out of bed and told to gather in the town square and get in groups of men and boys, women and young children, and the elderly. The men and boys were told they were needed for work and would return home shortly. Pagirsky watched as her brother, Benjamin, was herded onto a truck. Noticing that he didn’t have a jacket, she ran back to her house to grab it, wrapped it around a loaf of bread, and ran back to the truck to throw it to her brother. He blew her a kiss. In response to her action, an SS Man smashed Pagirsky in the face with the butt of his rifle, causing her to fall and crack her head on a cornerstone, and black out. That was the last time she saw Benno, as she called her brother. A short time after, as the children were playing, the bullhorn boomed again and the children were told they would be taken to a place to be cared for as their parents would be taken to work in Germany. They started to be loaded onto trucks. Pagirsky watched as her little cousin Jeshiale, held onto his mother, with his arms around her neck, as a German guard pulled him off of her, and smashed his head into her grandfather’s house, killing him instantly. She watched as Jewish men with beards were rounded up in the town square and forced to have their beard cut off. Her grandfather Bezalel was among them. A guard handed her grandmother a pair of scissors and told her to cut her husband’s beard. She refused, saying, “enough, no more” and spat in the face of the soldier. As Pagirsky’s mother held her tightly, she could hear two gunshots. Both her grandparents were killed right then and there. As bullets rang around

THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2017 them, Pagirsky’s mother told her to run. She ran as far as she could before tripping and falling into a ditch. She passed out due to fear. Pagirsky awoke to a heavy weight above her and clawed her way through the dirt to escape the ditch. The weight on top of her was from corpses. Pagirsky had recalled her parents telling her to go to a Polish farm outside of town, had they ever been separated. There, she was reunited with her mother. The Germans came looking for her father, who had also managed to make his way to the farm, but they knew they couldn’t hide him forever. He was valuable since he had a drivers license. When the Germans took 10 hostages in exchange for Pagirsky’s father, he surrendered. Her father had an opportunity to say goodbye, and it was then that he kissed Ruth and whispered the words that carried her through. She never saw her father again. Pagirsky, her mother and her cousin, Renie, were forced to leave the farm. After spending some time wandering around a nearby forest, they came across a fenced in area with barracks, where they saw people being dropped off. Thinking they might find some of their family members, they walked to the fenced in area and joined the others. They had just entered Camp Pustkow. As the occupants were asked to line up outside the barracks, Pagirsky, her mother and Renie joined, until someone realized they weren’t supposed to be there. A woman grabbed them and told them to go into the barracks and hide under the bed. It was Regina’s cousin, Mania Tugenthaft. For several weeks, Mania hid her family in the roof of the barrack. “It was a tin roof and it would get so hot during the day, that it was like being in an oven. You would get burned if you touched it,” Pagirsky recalled. Pagirsky became sick with dysentery and continuing to hide in the barrack became too great of a risk. Her Uncle Josef, who happened to be in another

section of the camp, found out about the situation and decided to help her and her friend, Tuska, escape by creating fake birth certificates for them and urging them to go to Germany to live as Polish slave laborers. Ruth and Tuska were able to escape successfully, but her mother and Renie stayed behind. One of the last things Regina told Ruth was not to speak, because her German accent would reveal that she wasn’t from Poland. Pagirsky held her tongue for three years as she worked on a farm in Kummelbacher Hof in Neckargemund, Germany. The farm was owned by I.G. Farben, the company that produced cyclone gas used in concentration camps, and it was operated by Catholic nuns. Pagirsky lived as a Christian and remained mute as she performed various duties as a slave laborer. The farm presented its own challenges, but the worst was when Pagirsky was sent into a nearby town to retrieve a clock in the spring of 1944. On her way back, she was gang raped by three German soldiers who had been drinking. “I lost faith in God after that. They left me on the road in my own blood. I started digging a hole, put my face in it, howled like an animal and said, ‘God, this is where I bury you. I couldn’t forgive him for what was done to me,” Pagirsky said. Pagirsky wasn’t liberated until April 1945. A United States soldier had stepped out of a jeep and approached Pagirsky and her friend Tuska. Pagirsky noticed a Jewish star on the man’s cap. “The driver stepped out of the jeep and translated for the lieutenant who said the war was ending soon and we could stay or we were free if we wanted to go,” Pagirsky recalled. “That word ‘freedom’ was intoxicating.” After the war had ended, Pagirsky found what had happened to her family. A man who claimed he had been at Auschwitz with her father and brother, tracked Pagirsky down. “He said, ‘Your father, every morning, led prayers and made sure that food was divided so that no one was

The Rockaway Times without it. He was active in trying to create an escape route and somebody found out about it and reported it.’ On Yom Kippur, the holy holiday, my father was hanged as an example. My brother had to cut him down and dig a ditch. My father was thrown into the ground and my brother was shot and thrown into the same grave,” Pagirsky said. Many years later, she learned about what happened at Pustkow, where her mother and Renie were. Around Chanukkah in 1942, Pustkow was liquidated. Able-bodied workers were taken to another camp while the women and children were shot and thrown into a mass grave. “This is most likely what happened to my Mutti and Renie,” Pagirsky said. After learning the fate of her family, Pagirsky vowed not to bring children into the world. One of the soldiers who liberated her, David Tanzman, convinced her otherwise. “He asked me, ‘And who will make this a better world?’ He told me the legend of Tikun Olam, which said there will always be 36 righteous people in the world whose purpose is to rebuild and repair it. ‘Who knows why you survived and what your offspring will do to better this world.’” Despite enduring what she did, she remembers most, the people that showed kindness and helped her survive. “People can be good, there are good people always in the world.” Pagirsky went on to rebuild her life in America. She married her husband, Irving, found a home within Rockaway and went on to have three children, 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Through her storytelling and book, Memoirs, they, and future generations will know what happened to Ruth Wachner Pagirsky during World War II. “Before I tell my story, I always say, ‘pappi, do you hear me?’ He gave me something to fight for by telling to me to tell it all. He gave me a mission. Each time before I speak, I tell him, Pappi, I’m doing it.” Memoirs by Ruth Wachner Pagirsky, can be purchased on Amazon.

Open Letter to Mayor de Blasio & the Parks Department By Alex Karinsky Two tragedies happened on our stretch of Rockaway Beach sand, each exactly a year apart when two surfers died on the exact same set of “sticks” that are still there today in the Beach 93rd Street area. Each one died the same way. Intense currents dragged them into the sticks where their leash snagged the sticks and pinned them under water, obviously unable to undo their leash. Each were strong men, in their 20’s and couldn’t get free. While the Parks Dept. finally came around to realize how dangerous these wood “jetties” were in the legal surfing beach, they had them removed to great overture by the local surfers. I personally have hit those sticks many, many times, been scrapped

tified AT ALL!!! He may not have known they were there when coming in and could have got snagged just like those two poor people who drowned. I ran down the beach, he’s not on the beach and now I’m bolting towards the sticks. Lots of whitewash commotion but I don’t see any board stuck there, big sigh! I finally see him on his knees near the beach fence tying his leash up on his board. It was exactly these conditions that cost those other two people’s lives, who were new to surfing in Rockaway, not knowing that there are actual dilapidated wooden jetties submerged below the higher tides. Huge drift. Jetties not even marked or identified. So with this information Mr. de Blasio and Mr. Silver of the Parks Department, when will the next death take place

up, boards dinged, you name it. And I’m not the only one. But it was the surf session last Saturday night that got me anxious. While I stupidly paddled out in a 4/3mm wetsuit in freezing wind chill around 7 p.m., the surf picked up dramatically as did the wind and the ominous littoral side shore drift, grunting along at about 3 mph. My 11-year-old yelled that he was going in on his next wave. I yelled back “OK,” took my last wave in as well and walked up the beach, putting my board in my surf racks on the bike. After that, I looked out to the surf and couldn’t see my kid. I looked down the boardwalk, couldn’t see him. I got up on the railing and he wasn’t walking up any trail. Now I’m in a mild panic because I know these stick jetties are not marked or iden-

on these set of sticks? Or the other hundred of them lined along the Rockaway Peninsula? When will it not be a strong and healthy 20-year-old and maybe an 11-year-old? You can’t keep hiding your head in the sand hoping that it just doesn’t happen. In time it will happen, and while it will cost money to take them out, what cost do you put on a human life? This is massive neglect leaving these toothy dangerous sticks submerged in the water without any identification. And the ones that do have a warning sign, who does it benefit? The ones entering the water? Fine. What about the ones in the water that get swept into them without knowing they are there. At the very minimum put floating buoys attached to them, or do the right thing and get them removed entirely along the stretch of beaches most used, 93rd through to 108th Street.

Little League Recap Big Turnout For RLL Pitch, Hit and Run Contest

Before last Saturday’s monsoon wiped out weekend games, there was a lot of baseball on Friday night at Ft. Tilden, highlighted by Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit & Run competition. Several of our boys and girls competed with 15 advancing to the Sectional round on May 20. The players who are advancing are:

For the girls: 7/8-year-old bracket - Maryann Polanco, 9/10-year-old bracket - Noelle Poland, and 11/12-year-old bracket - Peyton Kalisak. For the boys, Nicholas Donovan was our all-around champion in the 7/8-year-old bracket with Anthony Gennaro and Dylan Pye qualifying for pitching and Calvin Zwerling for hitting. In the 9/10-year-old bracket, Tristan Can was the all-around champion with Thomas Connors and Owen Conti qualifying for pitching, Colin Courtney for hitting, and Anthony Farina for running. Bobby Benoit was the all-around champion for 11/12-year-old boys with Ben Gressel advancing for hitting and George Hance Jr. for running. Congratulations to all of Rockaway Little League’s winners! Good luck in the next round. Pitch, Hit & Run (PHR) is a national skills competition run by Major League Baseball and

sponsored by Scotts. Participants compete to advance through four levels of competition including Locals, Sectionals, Team Championships and the National Finals. The local Team Championships will be held at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. Winners of the Team Championship round advance to the Finals held during MLB’s All-Star Week at Miami Marlins Park in July. All expenses are paid. In league action, the L. Mahoney Real Estate Royals defeated the Slices and Ices Orioles in a well-played 6-4 contest. Dean Esposito, Ben Gressel, Connor McElhinney, Matthew Schneider

and James Mone each rapped out two hits. Gressel, McElhinney and Logan Monahan shared mound duties. Connor fanned seven in three innings while Logan chalked up five K’s in two innings. Ben chucked a scoreless frame. On the season, Connor McElhinney and Dean Esposito both have a six-game hitting streak while Jonathan Lazo has hit safely in eight straight. Matthew Schneider is leading the Royals with 13 walks. Joseph Esposito is leading the team in RBI's (13) and slugging percent (1.267). DIAMOND DUST: Tickets are still available for RLL Night at the Cyclones. The game (Cyclones vs. Hudson Valley Renegades) will be played in Coney Island on Saturday, June 24 at 6:00 p.m. Fireworks after the game. Tickets are $15.
