The 10th Annual 100th Precinct Community Council Chili and Mac & Cheese Cookoff showed that sometimes homecooked meals can’t be beat. With 28 chili and 15 macaroni and cheese entries, the competition that included dishes from local restau-

With 43 dishes to taste, there’s no doubt guests left full and satisfied, but The Wave’s Mark Healy and Detective Byrd of the 100th Precinct had the real tough job of picking which was better than the rest. Continued on page 38

Photo Finish - TOP 30 Named It wasn’t easy. More than 600 photos were entered for this year’s Rockaway Times Photo Contest. The five categories in this year’s contest included Beach Life, Pets/Wildlife, Humor/Fun, Rainbows/Lightning and Rockaway Parades. The goal was to narrow the favorites down to a Top 30 with each category having five to seven finalists. Seven judges were tasked with choosing their favorites in the various categories. We did the best we could with keeping it fair as the judges were sent photos with just numbers and no names attached. If photos received more than one vote, it moved to a second round of judge voting. And this process continued until each category had between five and seven top vote-getters. Beach Life was the most expansive category, with photos of Rockaway that didn’t quite fit other categories. It was also the category that garnered the most photos with more than

200. For this reason, we opted to have seven photos, the most of any category, move to the Finals. The Top 30 finalists will have their photos enlarged to poster-size and be on display on the boardwalk, the ferry dock, Broad Channel or Riis Park. They are expected to go live around Memorial Day weekend and stay through July. At a ceremony on the boardwalk, at a yet-to-be-determined date, a winner will be chosen. The talented (and lucky!) winner will get $500 and have his or her photo on the front page of The Rockaway Times. And though we can say unabashedly that the Top 30 are great, we know some wonderful and deserving photos did not make the cut. Some came up short in the voting but deserve some recognition, and therefore we selected 10 Honorable Mention photos that will also be made poster-sized and adorn one of the public display areas. These ten won’t

be eligible for the grand prize but the photographers will be able to keep the enlarged photos later in the summer when the Expo ends. Even with 40 photos getting selected for public display, there still were many that could’ve been finalists in other years. The 2019 competition was that tough. Some photos were excellent but could not be chosen because the resolution was not high enough and the photo would blur as it was enlarged. Cellphone photos are often good enough but sometimes a great shot loses quality when it’s blown up and can’t be a candidate for the boardwalk Expo. Keep this in mind for next year! And even if your photo didn’t make the finals or get an honorable mention, there’s still the possibility that it will be the cover of The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide. In fact, Rockaway Times publisher Kevin Boyle, who

was not one of the seven judges, says three of his favorites are not in the finals but are being considered for the Guide's cover. That’s not a bad consolation. There’s no telling who will win Photo of The Year, but we have to tip our lenses to John Reinhardt who has three photos in this year’s Top 30. Last year’s winner, Don Riepe, is back and like Reinhardt, has landed three of his photos in the finals as well. And Argirios Kostaras joins them as a triple threat as three of his were selected by the judges, too. Kudos! Mommy and Daddy Dearest In last week’s RT we suggested you give a listen to This American Life, a weekly radio show on NPR and also available as a podcast. I know some of you ancients don’t know what a podcast is but I’m telling you, branch out, get crazy, try it. It’s an audible thing, ya know, like a mobile Victrola. You can listen to podcasts on your computer or cell phone, if you’ve moved up from a flip phone. There are podcasts on any, and I mean any, topic you can

think of. Whatever it is, somebody’s talking about it and somebody’s recording it. There’s only so much Z100, Cousin Brucie or Rush Limbaugh you can listen to (I hope). Podcasts work best while driving or doing mindless house stuff. You can listen to stuff, pretty much without commercial interruption and you hit pause when you feel like it. Podcasts can be funny, inspiring, provocative and every other adjective. Pod-

casts can make you feel smart. I said feel smart, not make you smart. Try ‘em will ya? Anyway, the Re family was the subject of a segment on This American Life a couple weeks back. Eleven siblings were making an effort to distribute 196 items from the parents’ estate. It’s quite the story. One of the things that struck me was how they referred to their parents as mommy and daddy. It’s such a generational thing. A lot of baby boomers do it. When talking with their siblings, they’ll say mommy and daddy. Fifty- to 60- and 70-year-olds will say mommy and daddy. Most times as a reference. Mommy said. Mommy and Daddy went on vacation. Who’s gonna watch Mommy? Boomers don’t use Mommy or Daddy directly. They might say, "Hey Ma, what do you have for dinner?" They're not going to say, "Mommy, what do you want for dinner?" In any case, it’s a little weird, right? Sometimes you’ll hear

your friend talking to their sibling and saying mommy or daddy. It’s cute and weird, though somewhat comforting that other people your age, besides you, are actually saying mommy and daddy. Kids. I mean kids who are 30 years old and younger think it’s icky. They’ll say Dad or Mom. Dad’s gonna be mad sounds a lot better than Daddy’s gonna be mad. I gotta give kids credit for that. I don’t think there’s a g r a n d m o t h e r- g r a n d f a t h e r thing. Grandma is the usual and thankfully I’ve never heard grandmommy. I’m not a big fan of Nana or Nanny but I’m not gonna fully hate you for using them. If you live in Kentucky, or some parts of Queens, you might say granddaddy but otherwise it’s Grandpa or Gramps or Papa, nothing cringey. How’d I get here? See what happens? Be careful about what I recommend. You listen to a podcast and next thing you know, you have mommy and daddy issues.

Lawrence Woodmere Academy ARTS & MUSIC TRADITION CONTINUES Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA) continued it’s 100+ year rich history of Arts & Music excellence with the announcement that one of the school’s performing arts teachers, Tasha Partee, will be awarded the 2019 Inspiring Teacher Award by the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (Jimmy Awards, www.jimmyawards.com). Partee, whose background includes many years as a Broadway performer, is the Upper School Drama Director at LWA. CUOMO SIGNS OFFSHORE DRILLING BAN On Monday, April 29, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a bill that bans exploration, development, and production of offshore oil and gas in New York State waters and prohibits the construction of any new infrastructure in New York to support oil and gas development in the North Atlantic Planning Area, the federal government’s designation for federal waters offshore the tri-state area and New England. The legislation, sponsored by Assemblyman Steve Englebright and Senator Todd Kaminsky, was passed overwhelmingly by the Legislature. The newly-enacted law drives home New York’s opposition to offshore oil and gas development at a time when the Trump Administration’s extreme oil and gas leasing proposal seeks to open virtually all ocean waters more than three miles from shore to oil and gas drilling—the entire East Coast, West Coast, Gulf Coast, and Alaska. While

the Trump Administration’s drilling plan appears to be on hold for now, the planning process could be restarted at any time and efforts to drill in the federal waters along the Atlantic coast could jeopardize New York’s ocean waters. “No how, no way are you going to drill off the coast of Long Island,” Gov. Cuomo said when he took the podium. The move has gained some local support by local organizations and environmental groups across the state. “Rockaway Women for Progress is committed to clean oceans and a clean environment. Today, Governor Cuomo will ban drilling in NY State waters,” Jean Belford, co-founder of Rockaway Women for Progress, said. “We applaud New York for taking this step to oppose offshore drilling. However, this will only protect our waters three miles from shore, and until the entire Atlantic is removed from the plan, no states on the Atlantic coast are safe.”

Foodies, grab a bite or 20 at Rockaway’s hungrily-anticipated Taste of Rockaway culinary neighborhood food march, happening this Saturday, May 4, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Hosted by the Rockaway Union, the annual event with the great ticket price of $15 in advance or $20 day of—from Thai, Italian, Uzbek, Caribbean, classic American fare like barbecue and burgers, fine wines and gourmet desserts, plus more—dishes up a smorgasbord of mouth-watering treats, offering both familiar and new flavors. The event has no start or end place, it’s just an appetizing crawl at your pace, in any order you choose. Just be rest assured, you will receive a sampling of food from every participating spot. Also, another added bonus— all the participating businesses are within walking distance of each other, and are excited to not just woo your taste buds, but unitedly boost Rockaway as the ultimate NYC seaside paradise for gastronomes. Newcomer, Sorrentino's Meat Market will be offering all varieties of their homemade Italian sausages, chicken and turkey patties, and mozzarella. Though they have only been open for two weeks, the new addition is already creating a buzz amongst locals, and proprietor Vincent Sorrentino said he is more than excited to join in on the neighborhood fun with Taste of Rockaway. “We’re brand new to Rockaway, and locals are already becoming not just customers, but friends. Folks are happy that they don’t have to go all the way to Brooklyn or Howard Beach to get real au-

thentic Italian fresh food,” he said, adding that events like this will give him even more exposure, much like the recent announcement that the Cross Bay Bridge will be free for all Queens residents starting next year. “Must be a sign from above that we are meant to be in Rockaway, so now all our customers both near and far, can now come in and enjoy our goods without the hassle of a toll,” Sorrentino said with a smile. RBQ, the barbecue Boulevard joint that opened last July, will be dishing out brisket, pulled pork and chicken, ribs, their signature mac 'n' meat, chicken wings, a sampling of their appetizers and more. Also, they will have live entertainment in the afternoon. Co-owner John Moroney, with his son, Ryan, said, “Taste of Rockaway is great not just for local restaurants, but the entire community. Robert Kaskel, founder of the Rockaway Union’s Taste of Rockaway event and owner of Thai Rock, said through popular demand from both merchants and customers, he had to bring the event back. “We’ve been this doing every year since after Hurricane Sandy, sometimes even twice a year, with the goal of boosting the morale of the community. In late March, I was getting emails with folks asking, ‘When is the next Taste happening?’ Once I sent out the blast email to all the local businesses, the response was beyond gratifying. This event has two goals: To thank the communities for supporting local businesses and to give the businesses a chance

According to Kaskel, all the proceeds go towards paying for advertising, the t-shirts and all the other expenses associated with the event. “The money that comes in from the ticket sales goes right back to the community. We advertise in all the local newspapers, which goes towards their efforts in keeping the community informed in their pages. Also, we patronize the local printers to create the posters and t-shirts. Even the event logo was designed by Geoff Rawling, a well-known NYC artist who lives right here in Rockaway. This event is all about shopping small and supporting locals. Reggae Legend Living In Our Midst: Meet Mikey “Mao” Chung By Kami-Leigh Agard

A few weeks ago, at Jammin’ Jon’s Rock Out for Autism at the Rockaway Brewing Co., you may have heard a rootsy reggae ensemble featuring various musicians and vocalists, including saxophonist Douglas Guthrie and dub poet Ras Atiba. However, a reserved Asian gentleman masterfully playing the guitar with the band may have wooed you, not just with his artistry, but his reserved, yet self-assured air of mystery. Well folks, this man is reggae legend, Mikey “Mao” Chung, who since January has been living in Rockaway, and is gearing up to spread his passion for the Jamaican music genre here in the community, that he and others, revolutionized and built all over the planet. Chung and his late brother, Geoffrey Chung, are two of Jamaica’s undisputed musical champions, driving reggae’s

worldwide music invasion. They were part of internationally-known bands such as The Minstrels, The Virtues, The Mighty Mystics and famously, the Now Generation. Chung was a top session player for artists such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Issacs, Bunny Wailer,

Dennis Brown, Marcia Griffiths, Inner Circle, Black Uhuru, Chris Blackwell’s Compass Point All Starts, The Skatalites, and even crossed music genres by playing with The Rolling Stones, Grace Jones, Serge Gainsbourg, and James Brown. He’s even played for contemporary reggae artists

such as Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Garnet Silk, Shaggy, Morgan Heritage—and this is just to name a few. Chung was born in 1950, in Manchester parish on the island of Jamaica to Chinese parents. His father was a shopkeeper and his mother was a seamstress. When he was nine years old, his father became ill, and the family traveled to their ancestral roots in China, so his father could get treatment in Hong Kong. After a year and a half, the family returned to Jamaica, where they moved to the capital, Kingston. Chung said, “Returning to Jamaica and settling in Kingston was a blessing. My father bought a bakery, opposite a street called Tewari Crescent. This was a big music hub, and Geoffrey and I just became enraptured with the whole scene. gae was born.” However, according to Chung, his parents were not too fond of he and his brother’s love for the exploding reggae scene, especially his father. “I attended St. Georges College, a prestigious all-male, Roman Catholic high school in Kingston. However, by this time, I was already playing in a band that my friends and I formed called, The Minstrels. I played drums, but when my grandmother went to the U.S., and bought me an acoustic guitar, I immediately started playing, and you could say the guitar took over my life. However, my dad did not want his sons to be in music. He had what he considered bigger aspirations for us. After gigs, we used to get locked out of the house, however, thankfully my mom used to sneak us in,” Chung said. Though self-taught, mid-career, Chung decided to formalize his music training at the Jamaica College of Music. Then in the late 70s, thirsty for more experience in the international reggae music

scene, Chung migrated to New York, and even used to visit Rockaway Beach. “I lived and played music for many bands in NY for over 15 years. My first wife and I used to come to Rockaway all the time. We loved the ocean. Back then, Rockaway was so different, not as built up, but still nice to visit. So, it’s ironic to think that here I am back in Rockaway, of course much older, but still vibing to the community and its music scene,” Chung said.

a place he used to visit decades ago, is a true testament of how life really turns full circle. Giorgio Zanardi, founder of RCK 97, dubbed as the first reggae movement of Rockaway, said his bandmate, saxophonist Douglas Guthrie, contacted him inquiring if he knew of an apartment for an old friend. “Doug asked me if I knew of any rentals because his friend was in NY and needed a place to stay, while he was recuperating from his health treatment. I didn’t know who he was, but of course, immediately began asking around. Finally, when I met Mikey, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe I was meeting, ‘The Mikey Chung!’” Fortunately not just for Chung, but the Rockaway community, Zanardi was able to find a welcoming dwelling for the music legend. How veteran Jamaican-born musician, also a Rockaway resident, Guthrie, and Chung reunited is another riveting narrative. “One day, I’m on 42nd Street, and I see Mikey. I couldn’t believe my eyes. JCCRP Ensures Holocaust Survivors Are Never Forgotten By Katie McFadden

It has been 74 years since the Holocaust came to an end in 1945, and on May 2, Jews across the world will recognize Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. However, the Holocaust is one of those tragic pieces of world history that will never be forgotten and in Far Rockaway, the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula (JCCRP) makes sure that those who survived the Holocaust are recognized regularly. According to JCCRP Executive Director Moshe Brandsdorfer, the organization has been serving as a “one stop shop social services organization” for the community for 47 years. While JCCRP serves the broader Jewish community across the peninsula, the group also makes sure to recognize a very special population—Holocaust survivors. For Brandsdorfer, helping those who have survived the Holocaust has special meaning. “I’m the grandchild of four Holocaust survivors, so for me, it really hits home. My grandmother came here from Poland in 1949, with the shirt on her back. She got off in a boat in Boston and was given $10 by a Jewish organization, which was just enough for her to make her way to New York and buy some food for a few days,” Brandsdorfer said. “It’s a personal part of our mission for me and the community as a whole because many of us are children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. Many of us are personally connected to these vulnerable holocaust survivors and we want them to be taken care of. We also recognize that as Holocaust survivors came and struggled with the clothes on their backs, they laid the groundwork for the lives that we now live in America. There’s a very sensitive, emotional tie that many in this community has with Holocaust survivors.” With that personal connection, many of those at JCCRP take helping Holocaust survivors personally and throughout the Rockaway peninsula, they serve about 300 of these seniors. Those at JCCRP under-

stand that these survivors are a vulnerable population. “Many of the immigrant Holocaust survivors that are active today are from the former Soviet Union, who immigrated at a much later date than my grandparents. Many came in the ‘80s and ‘90s at a later age. They were already 55 and up, and learning a new language and a new trade were extremely difficult. Some of them did, and some were not able to and some are displaced people from a different country with no real means of supporting themselves,” Brandsdorfer explained. “What they love to talk about most is their children and how many have gone on to become successful Americans that they’re very proud of, but there are also many that live below the poverty line.” To assist this vulnerable population, JCCRP offers them a variety of social services and even food through a special food distribution once a month. JCCRP learns about the needs of their local Holocaust survivors through a committee of survivors themselves. “We have an advisory committee called the Holocaust Survivors Advisory Committee, made up of seven Holocaust survivors that get together quarterly in our office. We offer them lunch and they serve as our eyes and ears for the community to tell us everything from what food items they appreciate, to what projects and initiatives they want us to work on and they give us a tremendous amount of feedback,” Brandsdorfer said. One important service JCCRP offers to Holocaust survivors is a monthly food distribution program. While JCCRP has a general food pantry, once a month, they hold a special food distribution specifically for Holocaust survivors so they can avoid long lines and pick up

foods that are catered to them. “The fact that we give culturally sensitive foods is something that they really appreciate. There are so many different foods that for whatever reason they didn’t have in places like Russia, or they just don’t eat,” Brandsdorfer said. Providing an example, he explained that sweet potatoes are one food they don’t offer as they’ve found that many Holocaust survivors believe they’re rotten. “It would be a waste of funding to give them foods that they won’t use, so we use that funding to purchase the things they do want and distribute it to them on a day set for them. It allows us to give white glove service to them as Holocaust survivors and vulnerable seniors.” Most of the survivors go to JCCRP’s office (1525 Central Avenue) to pick up their groceries, but those that are homebound and can’t make it are offered a delivery service. The food distribution is made possible by various sources of funding, food from different organizations and the work of JCCRP staff members and volunteers. According to Brandsdorfer, funding sources include the Claims Conference, the New York City Council, the Jewish Federation of North America and others. Food donations to the pantry come from places like City Harvest, the Food Bank of New York, the Met Council and other partners. Then volunteers, such as those from local schools, neighbors and even local politicians like Councilman Donovan Richards, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Senator Joe Addabbo, stop by to help distribute the food. Besides the food distribution, JCCRP’s network of Holocaust survivors utilize many more of their services. “Our benefits enrollment services are used a lot. Holocaust survivors often come to enroll in Section 8 and food stamps and health insurance programs with us as the language barrier is often difficult for them, so sometimes we have translators,” Brandsdorfer said. JCCRP also has the backs of these particularly vulnerable seniors that often become

victims of scams. “We have so many cases where Holocaust survivors are taken advantage of by insurance companies or cellphone scams. They wind up signing up for these services where they’re billed for thousands of dollars and they don’t know how to get out of them, so we’re here to help them,” Brandsdorfer said. In addition to serving as a helping hand, JCCRP especially likes to bring a sense of dignity to these seniors. During the holidays, JCCRP makes sure to give a little something extra special with their food distributions. “For holidays times like during Passover, we’ll give out more holiday-related foods like matzoh and gefilte fish, and for Hanukkah, we’ll also give out little menorahs and candles or gold coins. They feel really good about it when we give them things related to the holiday,” he said. JCCRP also hosts a special concert for their survivors. “We have this Hanukkah concert where we have these Russian musicians and different speakers come and it gives them a real sense of dignity. They feel like they’re going out for a night on the town. But what they really appreciate most is knowing that they have a safety net and that someone has their back,” Brandsdorfer said. Guthrie studied music at the famous Alpha Boys School in Jamaica, and performed with with Alpha Boys Band, which produced many of Jamaica’s legendary musicians. He said that he and Mikey became friends, as two young lads going to school in the same area, and of course their even more significant bond—the love for reggae music. “One day, I was walking down the street, and I heard this band playing. I saw Mikey Chung, and I asked him if I could join, and that’s where our history as friends and fellow artists began, right in Vineyard Town in Kingston. Mikey and I banded again when we played with The Virtues, Inner Circle, New Generation and others. We were so tight as friends that when I started working, I used to stop at his house every day for lunch or dinner.

DBP Residents To Have Their Day in Queens Court A group of Dayton Beach Park shareholders, represented by attorney Mike Scala, won its venue battle with New York City over whether court hearings should take place in Queens or Manhattan this past week. In March, the shareholders of the Mitchell Lama housing cooperative filed an Article 78 proceeding in Queens County against the city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the Dayton Beach Park board of directors. The complaint alleged that HPD failed to act as the oversight agency to prevent the board of directors from engaging in egregious self-dealing, election fraud and lack of fiduciary responsibility to the corporation. A preexisting case filed by the board of directors in Manhattan seeks to disenfranchise up to 255 residents from voting in the election of directors by calling their share-

holder status into question. "When we filed our lawsuit in Queens, the city asked the judge not to sign an order for a return date there on the grounds there was a related matter pending in Manhattan. The judge signed the order, and the city then filed a motion to transfer our case to New York County,” Scala explained. As a result of the city's motion, the Queens matter was put on hold while the Manhattan court decided whether it should hear both cases. The city and the Dayton board teamed up against the shareholders to argue the cases should be heard in Manhattan where HPD's offices are located and claimed an impartial trial could not be held in Queens due to "long standing political affiliations therein." Scala and the shareholders filed a cross-motion arguing both cases should be contested in Queens because Dayton Beach Park, the board of

directors and the shareholders are all located there. Justice Carol R. Edmead of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County, issued an 11-page decision dated April 26, ruling, "the Court finds that Queens County has a far more legitimate interest in the outcome of the decision, which centers on the actions of a cooperative corporation in Queens and the shareholder status of several Queens residents." As such, the city's motion was denied, the shareholders' cross-motion was granted and the Supreme Court in the County of Queens will decide the matters. This victory for the shareholders is especially significant because conducting hearings in Manhattan made it difficult for the Rockaway Beach residents to participate or even attend court while their rights were being adjudicated.

"Traveling into Manhattan is a nightmare," Dayton Beach Park shareholder and petitioner in the case, Patricia J. McCabe said. "It takes hours to get there and hours to get home. Then there is the price of parking. I have a disability and public transportation is just not an option." "We won home field advantage," concluded Scala. "We believed all along that aside from the physical location of the courthouse being pertinent, a case concerning the interests of Queens residents should be decided by a Queens judge. Any day you can go to court and win a decision against the city is a good day in my book." With venue decided, the Queens court will now turn to the merits and decide, among other issues, whether HPD should take disciplinary action against the Dayton Beach Park board of directors.

To Be Grateful To be grateful is a gift we give ourselves each day when we open our eyes and acknowledge this moment is precious. There are days that are dark and dreary for many people and I send you my heartfelt prayers. It can be difficult to find a grateful heart when you are suffering, but know that you are not alone. Unfortunately, suffering is part of life and the more we accept and become present with what is going on, we begin to become the witness and don’t feel so lost. Here is my grateful list that

goes on and on but every day I wake up grateful for this life and all the lessons that come with it. I am grateful for my Mom and Dad who raised seven children to be responsible and compassionate beings. They gave us our faith and truly were role models for me and my brothers and sisters. I am grateful for my brothers and sisters. They will always be the people I go to when I need support and advice. We will never hold any grudges against one another but rather forgive and let go. We were taught this powerful lesson from a young

age by our loving parents. I am so grateful for my husband and children. I was blessed to raise my children as a stayat-home mom and spent many hours at playgrounds, sporting events, school functions, parties, etc. I am grateful I didn’t screw it up. Raising children is not an easy job but it is an honor to have had the privilege of being their mom. I am learning to let them fly and live their lives fully. Without the full support of my soulmate, I would never have been able to live the life I have lived and continue to live. I am grateful for my Ocean Bliss Yoga community. You have fulfilled my life in more ways than you will ever know. I am grateful to the Belle Harbor Yacht Club for providing a beautiful space for our community to practice yoga. Diabetes? See A Podiatrist I have written before about the dangers of diabetes. It is not a disease to be trifled with. Unfortunately, all too often I have patients who admit that they really don’t follow a diabetic diet. I hear things like, “Well, I really enjoy a bowl of ice cream every night,” and other similar comments. Not too long ago, I was talking to a patient about his worsening diabetic numbers. He admitted to a nightly habit of eating jelly beans, which are essentially pure sugar. If you have diabetes and ignore it or you don’t adhere to the diet, you might as well walk across a busy street blindfolded because, es-

sentially, that is what you are doing. Uncontrolled diabetes has many serious side effects. Today I would like to talk about the vascular, or blood vessel-related side effects. Diabetes adversely affects large and small blood vessels causing heart disease, kidney disease, eye diseases including blindness, and foot problems, to name a few. It causes blood vessels to narrow or clog completely. In the legs, it affects the blood vessels supplying blood to nerves, causing numbness, tingling, and often pain in the feet. This is called diabetic peripheral neuropathy. While there are medications to al-

leviate some of the pain and tingling, the numbness will remain. When someone has diabetic neuropathy, they cannot feel their feet and often are not aware of small cuts and ulcers that form. These small breaks in the skin often become large ulcers that may go deep into the bones of the feet, necessitating weeks of intravenous antibiotics and sometimes, amputation of part of the foot. For this reason, it is imperative for someone with diabetes to pay special attention to their feet. The American Diabetic Association recommends an annual visit to a podiatrist, at a minimum. I suggest a podiatric visit at least every three to four months. The podiatrist will evaluate the feet, remove callus and dead tissue, and if an ulcer has formed, treat it before it gets to the point of amputation. Here is a list of suggestions to keep a diabetic person’s feet healthy: keep your feet clean, dry, and well moisturized, wear shoes that fit well, inspect your feet daily, never

walk barefoot (even at home), see a podiatrist for calluses, minor injuries, or ingrown toenails, see the podiatrist at least annually, maintain good blood glucose control, and don’t smoke. Also, as diabetes can affect the eyes, see an ophthalmologist at least annually. If you have diabetes and have pain, tingling, or numbness in your feet, be sure to see your doctor. Your doctor will also want to measure your hemoglobin A1c at least two to three times a year. The A1c is the preferred method of checking diabetic control as it measures control over several months as is not simply a snapshot of the now and present, as a blood sugar measurement is. Cat People My youngest is a cat person. Loves them to death. My mermaid is not a cat person at all. Maybe it’s her fishy background that makes her shy away from the feline predators. In a historic building on Montague Street that was once home to a bucolic restaurant called, Friend of the Farmer. The Cat Café serves neither cats nor has cat on the menu. Instead, its mission is

to help abandoned cats find a home. And they have come up with a novel concept: you pay seven dollars to enter the premises; you can bring your own food and drink, or order stuff there; and, you get to socialize with the dozens of cats roaming the premises. The thought is that humans can de-stress by holding on to purring balls of fur, and the cats get the company of someone who may actually adopt them. Pretty cool idea. I immediately called my daughter to let her know about this discovery, and she was thrilled! Blocked by momma

mermaid from having a cat at our house, and unable to have a pet in the building she lives in, this café provides the perfect “renta-cat” scenario for a cat lover. On a side note, did you see the research report recently on cats and whether they can hear and understand when humans call them? It turns out that they can, they just don’t care and can’t be bothered with some human calling after them. Purrrfect!! We have a bird feeder in our backyard and are constantly amazed at the feathered friends who stop in to see and eat with us. Cardinals, finches, mockingbirds, doves, starlings, all visit frequently and bring joy to our backyard. Last year we realized that our flying friends were acting cautiously and saw we had a feral cat as a visitor. Turns out our feline friend was expecting and delivered several kittens behind the garage. While they were cute, they were highly suspicious, and kept their distance. When momma kitty grabbed a sparrow in its mouth and looked at us with the “look what the cat dragged in” look,

The Rockaway Times we called in the cat specialists to fix the whole lot. But it was not so easy as they disappeared, not to return. This week, The New York Times ran a story about feral cats in Australia. It seems there are millions of them and that they have devastated the rabbit and fox populations and are threating other small animal populations as well. So, Australia has authorized cat hunts in order to cull the predatory population. I think a better idea would be to import the cats from Australia to New York City to control the rat population! We don’t have any rabbits or foxes in Manhattan so, no issues there. Sounds like a win-win? In the meantime, if you have a hankering for some perfectly good cat petting, head on over to the Brooklyn Cat Café and socialize with our feline friends. Ever since Egyptian times, humans and cats have been friends. As it turns out, the cats don’t particularly care one way or another, but they can help relieve the stress of everyday life for us humans!!

Felix Cavaliere's Rascals to Close Bugalou Concert Series Did you know that The Rascals had more #1 hits during the 1960s than everyone except The Beatles, The Supremes, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and The Four Seasons? On Saturday May 11, Felix Cavaliere's Rascals will close Season 2 of the Bugalou Concert Series in style at St. Francis de Sales in Belle Harbor, with special guests and Rockaway favorite, Squid, beginning the night of music. After serving in the band Joey Dee and the Starlighters (Peppermint Twist), Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, and Gene Cornish, brought in Dino Danelli on drums to form the Young Rascals in Garfield, NJ in 1965. The band got its big break while playing at the famous music club, The Barge, on Long Island where Sid Bernstein, who was famous for bringing The Beatles to Shea Stadium, was looking for “the next big thing,” signing on as the band's manager and securing a contract with Atlantic Records short-

ly after. I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore was their first single, but it was the follow up, Good Lovin' that made their reputation, going to #1 in the U.S. and Canada. The band would follow with a string of Top 40 hits, reaching #1 again in 1967 with Groovin' and in 1968 with People Got to Be Free. It's A Beautiful Morning, How Can I Be Sure, and A Girl Like You also went #1 in Canada while reaching the Top 10 in the U.S. The band continued into the early ‘70s with some defections, but never attained the same commercial success as during their peak from 19661968. Steve Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band is a lifelong fan and the band's biggest champion, giving a memorable speech at their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, proclaiming them as “the first rock band ever,” and then forging a reunion in 2013, to bring the band and their story to Broadway

for “Once Upon a Dream,” with another memorable performance during the Tony Awards show. Felix Cavaliere wrote most of the Rascals hits with Eddie Brigati, and was lead singer on many, including their three #1 hits, and provided their trademark keyboard sound, particularly on the Hammond B3 organ. He has continued to record and perform throughout the years, including a stint as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band. Cavaliere was

originally slated to perform the second show of Bugalou's first season but the wait will be worth it as a recent performance at City Winery in NYC demonstrated. I am lucky enough that I travel a bit and fly multiple times every year. Every time I fly, I think I am on line with people who have never flown and have had to go through the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) scanning procedures. EVERY TIME. I think the agents that work there are similar to teachers in that they have to repeat themselves all day long. And sometimes I wonder why they even bother describing their procedures and rules about going through the scanners because people just do what they want. Now I know there are some things that may be confusing, but if you carefully listen to the agents (and even ask questions if you are unsure), you will get through smoothly. I have been on line with people who clearly do what they want. Recently the agent said multiple times, “Take off all jackets and sweatshirts and place them in the bin.” The woman next to me did not and then wanted her place back in line after she had to go back and place her coat in the bin after having been directed by the agent personally that the coat had to come off. I understand some people may not fly as much as others and it may be confusing, but as I have said in this column before, there is the internet where you can find out many things about getting through the TSA scanning easily. On the TSA’s page there are over 100 Frequently Asked Questions that answer a myriad of questions. There is even a number you can call if your question is not addressed in the 100+ FAQs.

The TSA has also been in existence since November 2001, shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. So this is not a new thing. There have been major changes over the years: *2005 started the no shoes rule. Why do people still try to get through with their shoes on? *2006 the liquids ban was established. Why do people still try to get items over 3.5 ounces through the scanning? *July 2017 was the new electronics ban and people still do not understand about placing laptops and tablets in a separate bin. A friend of mine has an idea: if you get through TSA scanning without incident, you get a sticker or some sort of badge that says you know how to follow directions. You can then go on a different line each time you fly. If you mess up, you have to go to gen. pop. with the rest of the people who do not know how to follow directions. Some say I should get TSA Pre-Check but I guess I have been lazy and have not gone through the process. After this last experience I may go through the process of applying and attending an enrollment center and getting fingerprinted. After all, it only comes out to $17 per year and that seems well worth it. Have a great week everyone!

This year, Scholars’ Academy showed they’re not just book smart, but skilled in the kitchen as they took home the first-place trophy for their chili dish. Coming in second, NYPD Transit District 23 proved a great chili doesn’t need to include meat as their vegetarian dish earned second. In the Mac ‘n’ cheese contest, the Friends of Beach 59th Street Playground dished out a first-place winner, with FDNY EMS Bureau of Training earning second. Guests not only got to enjoy some good food, but good music provided by Police Officer/ DJ Mark Braun, plus the chance to win some great raffle prizes donated by local businesses. Also, guests had a voice in the competition and got to vote for the People’s Choice Awards. This year, the crowd favorite for both their chili and mac ‘n’ cheese
