Sabotage at the Concessions By Katie McFadden
Would it be a summer in Rockaway without a little drama? In what seems like a continuous drama, the boardwalk concessions and its new contract holders, Rockaway Bazaar, faced yet another obstacle after discovering that the Beach 97th concession had been sabotaged. As reported by GrubStreet and the New York Post, when concessionaires went to visit the building that previously housed Low Tide Bar in late April, they were met by an unpleasant surprise—the smell of rotten fish. This led to the discovery of raw fish and bottles full of sour milk and rotten meat in the ventilation shafts along the ceiling. The “food bombs” had been left with the intention of them being discovered in the summer season as temperatures peak. When they tried to enter the management office, they had to use power tools to do so as the door was sealed shut. What they discovered once they got in was
even worse. The office had been ransacked, equipment broken, and it had been doused with cooking oil and urine. Problems grew when they realized the drains were filled with Quikrete concrete mix, causing water backups and creating mold. As damages total more than $10,000, the vendors told GrubStreet that this wasn’t just a case of vandalism, but a case of sabotage. The incident, which was first reported to police on May 13, is being investigated by police and the NYC Parks Department. This discovery comes after months of high tensions and arguments over the selection of Rockaway Bazaar as the new contract owners over the previous contract owners, Rockaway Beach Club. After the announcement of the contract award in late 2020, a hearing in January drew in hundreds who expressed their dismay over the decision. The hearing got contentious, with threats being thrown at Rockaway Bazaar
owners, Aaron Brudo and Belvy Klein, as someone shouted, “Lying devil, we know where you sleep!” The hearing also included comments from former concession managers who said, “I do not wish to work with the new company.” Despite the testimonies and hundreds of letters of support and dissent, after review, NYC Parks stuck with its decision to award Rockaway Bazaar the contract. Some had feared since Rockaway Bazaar would be paying $300,000 for their licensing fee, nearly three times what Rockaway Beach Club was paying, the vendors would face higher rents. However according to GrubStreet, some vendors disclosed that under the new management, their monthly rent is lower. Despite the setback, Brudo and Klein remain optimistic about the upcoming season. “We are working our tails off to be open by Memorial Day weekend and look forward to a fun,
Booking Ev
sunny first season in Rockaway. We are happy to have reached agreements with Caracas, Rippers and the majority of the Beach 97th food vendors. The incident at Beach 97th is unfortunate and a real bummer for not only us, but our vendors as well. We will continue to push for, and work with, the Rockaway small business community,” they said in a statement. Rippers on Beach 86th Street and Caracas and Brothers on Beach 106th Street were unaffected by vandalism. They are expected to open this weekend. Beach 97th is still expected to open next week during Memorial Day weekend. The Beach 97th concession will open with some returning vendors, plus the new Sand Shark Bar and some other newcomers like Seany Slices, who is bringing his coal oven pizza from the Rockaway Brewery to the boardwalk. Rockaway Bazaar will also be unveiling a live music series at Beach 97th in the coming weeks.

St. John’s Celebrates A Night of Heroes
By Katie McFadden
It was a night to celebrate heroes. On Tuesday, May 18, St. John’s Episcopal honored those who stood strongly on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic and continue to do so daily. Staff, board members, patients, families, residents and
elected officials gathered at Rockaway’s only hospital on Tuesday to celebrate the hard work of those at St. John’s as they faced coronavirus head on over the past year, and to remember those who we’ve lost. The night, which was Emceed by comedian Dion Flynn, as seen on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and the Tonight Show, included a blessing, speeches, a light performance, a slide show and live musical performances by the Solid Rock
Church Choir and Art-Strings Ensemble. Flynn opened up the night telling the St. John’s staff, “You’re extraordinarily valuable and what you’ve been through this year is awe-inspiring.” Bishop Lawrence C. Provenzano followed to provide a blessing for the workers and those who we’ve lost due to the pandemic. Elected officials such as Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Councilwoman Selvena Powers-Brooks, Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato were also on hand to provide some words of praise and encouragement. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital CEO Jerry Walsh summed up why Tuesday’s gathering was held and all the hospital has been through over the past year as the first hospital in Queens to treat a coronavirus-infected patient. “This night is a great night for those of us who here that can be together with one another and share what we all collectively have been through in the last year. We’re here to celebrate the strength and tenacity, the resilience and the dedication of all of our team members. On Saturday, March 7, 2020, many of us were ready to go to the St. Continued on page 4

NIGHT OF HEROES Continued from Page 3 Patrick’s Day parade and we received a call that we had our first Covid positive patient and from that moment on, everyone in this organization’s lives changed,” Walsh said. “As the only hospital on the peninsula, we were prepared as best we could for what we knew was eventually going to happen. But we were never prepared for the tidal wave that was about to happen to us on that Saturday morning on the sixth floor. “None of us had been through anything like this. Every single hospital and health system across the country felt the same pressure that we did, except we experienced it first. It was hard work for everyone here and every single person rolled up their sleeves and people just stepped up to the plate and did what they needed to do because we had a job to do to take care of this community and to take care of each other. We became learners and in-
novators over the last year and we were flexible and because of what we became, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and everybody that works here—we’re better than we were a year ago. We were good before but we’re great now. I can’t thank you enough for what you do.” The struggles the hospital overcame were shown in a slide show that featured negative and positive media coverage of everything St. John’s endured over the year, from the battle against coronavirus, to the positive news of expanding services at the hospital and at its new facility on Beach 105th Street. Words of thanks and praise were projected on the hospital to remind staff of their accomplishments. RN Iona Folkes and other staff members took time to also reflect on those they’ve lost due to the pandemic by reading names as somber music was played. The night ended with a light and fireworks show as a thanks to all for their hard work in the face of an insurmountable challenge.

A Bike Theft Story With a Happy Ending By Katie McFadden
It’s not every day that a bike theft story ends on a good note. But sometimes they do. A man known for collecting cans around Rockaway won’t have to add up those nickels for a new bike after his was stolen last week. The community came together to make sure he got a new one. On Monday, May 10, a man named Richie was at Stop and Shop in Rockaway Park, doing his usual routine of loading recyclable cans he collected into the machine in exchange for some money, when he looked back and saw that his new bike that he just bought in February, was gone. Aleksandra Lebedev Brzostek, who owns a small business in Rockaway, heard Richie’s story as he came by to talk to her as he usually does, but this time breaking the bad news. Brzostek says she’s known Richie for many years, as a fellow person from the
local Polish community. She says he’s fallen on hard times. “Many years ago, he was involved in an accident and since then, he’s been through a lot. Long story short, he was homeless for a long time in Chicago, where there’s a big Polish community. I’m not sure how he ended up in New York, but he did. He was very
shy and scared of people and it was hard for him to trust anyone. Slowly he did build some trust with the small Polish community here and with their help, he now has a place to live right now,” she said. Although no longer homeless, Brzostek says Richie still collects cans to raise money to buy things, like the bike he
had bought earlier this year to help in the endeavor. Feeling bad for her friend after losing his new bike, she took to the local Facebook group, Friends of Rockaway Beach, to ask people to keep a lookout for Richie’s Schwinn bike. “Whenever people lose something or things are stolen from them, they ask the community to be on the lookout, so I posted to Friends of Rockaway Beach and explained that it was very sad that this happened to a poor person who collects cans,” she said. What she didn’t expect was for the group to take it a step beyond keeping an eye out. Some in the group suggested that if she started a GoFundMe to help Richie buy a new bike, they would support it. “It never crossed my mind to set up a GoFundMe but people from this amazing group encourage me to do so and the outcome could not be Continued on page 7

A BIKE THEFT STORY Continued from Page 5 better!” she said. Within a few hours of setting up the GoFundMe with a goal of $350 to cover the cost of the bike, Brzostek reached her goal. Friends, members of the community and even Jamie McLeod, owner of Polly & Esther, helped chip in. With the money in hand, Brzostek asked Richie to find a bike he liked. Unfortunately, the previous bike he had was sold out, so he continued to search local bike shops and some in Brooklyn for similar styles. “He came to me and told me that he found one but it’s $420,” she said. Although over the original goal, Brzostek said others had reached out to her to donate cash, so she knew she had enough money to not only cover the cost of the bike, but to also buy him a lock so that new bike won’t be stolen in the future. Brzostek went to Larry’s Cy-
cle Shop in Brooklyn, where Richie had picked out his new bike. Unfortunately, after explaining the situation and trying to negotiate, the bike shop wouldn’t cut her a deal, but after Richie had found a bike he liked, the busy working mom didn’t want to waste more time in getting it to him. On Tuesday, May 18, Brzostek gave Richie his brand new bike. “He was so excited!” she said. Brzostek is impressed with how quickly this effort came together and how willing people were to help her get Richie a new bike. “It feels amazing. I know Rockaway has great people but there are many others in need, so I am pleasantly surprised of this turnout.” In sharing the news of Richie getting a new bike to Friends of Rockaway Beach, Brzostek posted, “Whoever donated, whoever cheered him up with good words: THANK YOU ALL! Friends of Rockaway Beach is an amazing group of AMAZING PEOPLE.”

***** Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg requesting funding to rebuild and restore the Rockaway Beach Rail Line, which would drastically cut the commuting time to the City. The MTA produced a study indicating it (Queenslink) would cost several billion dollars. Amato suggested the Biden administration send some of those billions from any infrastructure bill. Good idea. But if Stacey really wants this to get traction, she will enlist the support of Congressmen Hakeem Jeffries and Gregory Meeks. Jeffries certainly has the ear of the administration as he is the Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and is often mentioned as a Speaker of the House candidate. Jeffries supported the reactivation
of the line in 2013 and still has articles regarding his support on his congressional website. “We’re committed to doing everything possible, despite the challenges, to bring the Rockaway Beach rail line back to life,” Jeffries has said. So Stacey, we hope you cc’d the letter to Jeffries and maybe to Senate Leader Chuck Schumer, who repped Rockaway when he was a congressman. QueensRail really relies on one factor: political support. ***** We’ve recently praised the many, many people who pitch in and clean up around Rockaway. And now a word to the opposite types: are you kidding? We’d like to say leaving trash on the beach is being done by careless, thoughtless DFDs but they’re not the only guilty ones. We’ve heard from disgusted residents of Rockaway Park and Belle Harbor about how the trash is getting out of control and we’re pleading with people to pick up after themselves. Beach season hasn’t even quite started but plenty of people are understandably upset about trash being left on the beach. Some civic minded folks take it upon themselves to clean up but the issue is the fact that other people are leaving the beach a disgusting mess. More garbage bins? More signage reminding people to pick up? More common courtesy? We’ll support any effort to keep our beaches beautiful!

Taking something old or used and giving it another purpose is a beautiful thing. That’s exactly what Tim Reckel and Pat Carroll are doing right here in Rockaway with their business Revamp RBNY. Both working in theater design and the arts, the pandemic took a toll on their day jobs but Reckel and Carroll were able to turn things around with their new business venture. Revamp is a carpentry shop that specializes in custom furniture, speak-

Reckel, originally from New Jersey, would work in his dad’s workshop in the basement and also helped with car mechanics. “I did my first oil change when I

They started working together about year and a half ago, a few months before the pandemic hit. Carroll was working at the Rockaway Brewery at the time when Reckel was looking for some extra help at Paper Mache Monkey in Greenpoint Brooklyn, an art studio that designs and builds sets for Broadway shows. Carroll started working for them, then not too long after, Covid hit and shut the world down. After both being out of work for some time, someone commissioned Reckel to build a chicken coop in their backyard. He asked Carroll to help with this project and soon things began to blossom. “After that, we did some word-of-

Once they began to have some success with more demand for customized items, they decided to make it official. Now they are making beautiful, handcrafted pieces for locals in Rockaway at Marina 59 in Arverne. They are using material from old boats, to furniture to even wood found lying around on the beach. Being environmentally friendly and knowing that they are repurposing something no one would take a second look at is important to them. “If we ever need extra wood that we can’t find, we always keep it local and go to Singh Hardwood right here in Rockaway. We make sure to use every piece we get
so there is no waste,” Carroll said. Revamp RBNY has been commissioned by other local businesses and organizations. They’ve made planters for the Rockaway Retreat House, a custom table for Whit’s End, a proofing box for baker, Naked NY, a curved banquette sofa for Rockaway Beach Broadcasting, and they’ve even completed jobs out-of-town from Brooklyn to upstate New
York. Both Carroll and Reckel hope to keep this business going and even broaden their horizons. “We would also like to eventually get into building out vans for people that want to live the van life or even small home spaces,” Carroll said. “We are always on the lookout for things like that.” They like to think efficiently and are happy to take on whatever requests are given. To check out some of their pieces, you can visit their Instagram page @RevampRBNY. You can also send them a message via Instagram if interested in getting a piece commissioned. Their website, RevampRockaway.com will be up and running soon.

NurtureU Wellness Celebrates 5 Years By Katie McFadden
NurtureU Wellness has been serving as a one stop shop for wellness in Rockaway. Since 2016, they’ve been providing a variety of massage, acupuncture and even mental health services to the community, but were left questioning their future after being shut down during the height of the coronavirus pandemic when people especially needed such services. But they’ve prevailed and on May 21, NurtureU Wellness will officially celebrate its fifth anniversary. Samantha Cintron has been a wellness facilitator and licensed massage therapist for 17 years. She got her start in luxury hotels in Manhattan, but after being laid off in 2011, she decided it was time to start working for herself. She started serving clients in her home until an opportunity came up to rent a second-floor space on the beach block of Beach 116th Street. On May 21, 2016, NurtureU Wellness officially opened its doors. “It was one of the best decisions I made. There’s nothing like having your own business, especially having it in the field of health and wellness when its needed more than ever. And we love it. I had always heard that you have to love what you do and do what you love and it’s absolutely true, especially when you work with a great team,” Cintron said. In its five years, NurtureU has grown its team and it services. Those services include massages by Cintron and Christina Cruz, a massage therapist and certified yoga instructor specializing in Thai yoga massage, making NurtureU the only spot on the peninsula to offer this unique service. Together, they offer everything from massage therapy, rehabilitative support massage, myofascial release, manual lymphatic drainage, trigger point therapy, Thai yoga massage, cupping, reflexology and simple relaxation massages for those who want to de-stress. Jennifer Beltrani and Julian Cho are on hand to provide acupuncture as licensed acupuncturists. And making this a holistic experience, NurtureU also offers mental health care with clinical psychologist Dr. Mary Beth Andrews and li-
censed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, Majida Ritter on hand. Business was going well until the unexpected, tremendous obstacle of the coronavirus pandemic left Cintron and her team worrying about the future of NurtureU, especially since they were forced to close under state orders. “In the beginning, we had to shut down completely. But we had to keep paying rent and had no income coming in. We weren’t sure whether we’d be able to start up the business again,” Cintron said. To save the business, Cintron got out of her lease on Beach 116th Street. But in that time of uncertainty, came a blessing in disguise. While the space on Beach 116th served their needs, Cintron had a goal of finding a ground floor space to give NurtureU more visibility and to be more accessible to those who can’t walk up to a second-floor office. In late July, a perfect opportunity opened up at 120-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. “We walked in and it was a match made in heaven,” Cintron said. She jumped at the opportunity to take over the space. “It’s one of the better things that has happened among all the negative things happening with Covid,” Cruz said. On September 8, 2020, NurtureU Wellness opened its new location. While the staff is taking all necessary Covid precautions, some of their regular clients still haven’t returned, but the visibility of the ground-level office in Rockaway Park has drawn in new clients looking to de-stress at a time when it is much needed. “People see the sign outside and they come in. So many new clients have come here, it’s unbelievable, and people just love it. They come in here and feel at home and so Zen and cared for,” Cruz said. Cintron added, “We’re on the ground floor and it’s easy to find parking and the feedback we’ve gotten has been incredible. Everyone is so happy. It’s so much better and it makes coming to work really nice.” The new location also offers proximity to new neighbors that NurtureU works closely with. “It’s so nice to have Katie at RBNY Physical Therapy across the street. She sends some clientele here that

need rehabilitative support after going through injuries or surgeries,” Cintron said. “The whole idea for NurtureU Wellness was to create a space where it is both therapeutic and relaxing.” Those at NurtureU are happy to be where they are, celebrating five years in business. “I feel so blessed,” Cintron said. “I’m so grateful that here we are, five years later and we’re still growing and it’s even better than what I imagined. I can’t think of anything else that I’d rather do than continue in this field of health and wellness. I look forward to the next five, the next 20 years.” Cintron added that she even hopes to expand by opening other NurtureU locations across

also turn to JKS Printing for their printed materials and Luv Cleaning for deep cleans to ensure the office is safe for clients and the community, especially with Covid still lingering. While NurtureU would normally celebrate its anniversary with a big party, Covid has changed plans, but they will celebrate by showing the community what they offer. From now through Saturday, NurtureU is hosting an open house. “Anyone who wants to come in can receive a complimentary chair massage or a sample Thai massage,” Cintron said. “On Friday and Saturday, the whole team will be here to talk

the country, with Hawaii as a possibility. But for now, Cintron is happy to bring the services of NurtureU to the place she calls home. “Rockaway is great. It’s this big, tightknit community and it’s awesome to work with other businesses here,” she said. In addition to working closely with RBNY Physical Therapy, NurtureU has added some retail to the space with local brands like Rockaway Candle, Elsie’s Delight handmade soaps and Oily Bird essential oils. Hockey For a Good Cause
On Saturday, May 22, many locals will be taking to the Beach 108th hockey rink to play for a good cause. The annual Ryan Rudden Hockey Tournament is being held to raise funds for Olivia Benedetto, a young girl from Roxbury who is recovering from a skiing accident. Ryan Rudden was an avid hockey player, who played on the very rink where dozens will gather on Saturday. In 2002, Rudden died in a car accident at age 17. Each year, his fami-
ly honors his memory by celebrating his love of hockey. Due to coronavirus, last year’s tournament was turned into a virtual poker tournament instead. But this year, the roller hockey tournament is back on and being held to raise money for Olivia Benedetto. In February, the 13-year-old was involved in a terrible skiing accident that has left her wheelchair-bound as she recovers. Funds are being raised to help the family convert their Roxbury home into a handicapped accessible space. Puck drop for Saturday’s tournament is at 10 a.m. There will be 50/50 tickets for sale and NYCountry Swag will be selling gear to help raise funds. There will also be an after party at RBQ on Beach 98th Street from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. A $50 ticket includes food, drinks, music and raffles.

Kaled Alamarie Vies for City Council D32 Seat By Katie McFadden
On June 22 and in the days prior with early voting, voters in District 32 will be selecting their candidate to run in the November general election for Councilman Eric Ulrich’s seat. As voters rank their candidates in the democratic primary, Kaled Alamarie hopes to be their top choice. Alamarie may live in Ozone Park, but he’s an avid runner of the beach in Rockaway, a frequent visitor to Riis Park and his daughter even attends Scholars’ Academy, but over the past few weeks, he’s been canvassing around the neighborhood to really get to know the residents of District 32 and what issues are important to them. The son of Yemeni immigrants, Alamarie’s parents came to the States to see their kids fulfill the American
Dream. From his parents owning a small business, the Dairy Mill on Cross Bay Blvd., to siblings that include a medical doctor, assistant principals at public schools and a Sergeant

way, Broad Channel and Hamilton Beach be better prepared to face such challenges. With transportation being a major issue for Rockaway and Queens, Alamarie hopes to advocate for more choices. “We’ve been neglected. They want us to support climate change by using vehicles less but they’re not providing us with alternatives. We need safe, efficient train service and buses,” he said. When asked about reactivating the Rockaway Beach Branch rail line, Alamarie says it may not be realistic from a cost-benefit perspective due to its high $8 billion projected cost at a time when budgets are heavily impacted, but he supports other rail alternatives that are more feasible. However, he does support the NYC Ferry. “We have to have more ferContinued on page 17

for the NYPD, Alamarie has seen politics affect all aspects of his family’s life. Though not a politician himself, Alamarie, who earned two master's and a PhD, is a career civil servant, having spent 20 years working for the City of New York as a research scientist for the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. With that experience, Alamarie knows New York’s waterways, including Jamaica Bay well, and as a climate resiliency expert who has done work on climate change and mitigation efforts even before Hurricane Sandy devastated Rockaway, he hopes to fight for the communities that often experience flooding and the effects of climate change. Faced with flooding every time there’s a storm surge or a high tide during a full moon, Alamarie hopes to use his expertise to help communities like Rocka-

These things are subsidized, and the city loses more money than gains from it, but it should be expanded further and maintained at the current rate because at the end of the day, it saves a lot with less cars in the street, it helps the middle class and it’s a faster route,” he said. As public safety becomes a major concern across the city, Alamarie wants to help the NYPD. “Crime has spiked dramatically throughout the district. I want to help the NYPD do their job better. My brother, who is a sergeant tells me that morale is so low in the NYPD. We don’t want to defund the police. Who are the police? They’re our brothers, sisters, moms and pops, they’re among us. We cannot neglect them and say defund them. They need to make a living and I understand there are bad cops out there. We need to have a better recruitment
Page 17
THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2021 system and we need to weed out the bad ones. We cannot have them militarized. We need units controlled by civilians as well as people from the rank and file and people with psychological skills as well as those who are well trained to deal with criminals. We want to put police back in the street with beat cops that know the neighborhoods and make the neighborhood feel safe while keeping criminals away,” he said. Coming from a small business family, Alamarie wants to do what he can to give small businesses a boost, especially after dealing with Covid. “We cannot neglect our small businesses. Local restaurants, grocery stores, bars, this is our foundation and I want to make sure it comes back stronger than ever,” he said. While serving the entire district, Alamarie wants to focus on some issues that are unique to Rockaway in particular. One concern that often goes overlooked? Mosquitoes. “This has been going on for dec-
ades. When I talk to residents, I always hear complaints about mosquitoes, and West Nile still exists. It’s a seasonal thing but we need permanent solutions. We need programs that biomimic nature, something that will end these disruptions. People tell me how beautiful their homes are but when summer comes, they can’t be in their backyard due to mosquitoes. This is no way to enjoy life,” he said. He also hopes to tackle the issue of lifeguard shortages in the summer and make sure beaches are sufficiently staffed with lifeguards for extended hours. He’d also like to address the minefield of potholes around the roads, and wants to ensure they’re fixed if elected. Alamarie will appear on the democratic primary ballot for District 32 along with Felicia Singh, Bella A. Matias, Michael G. Scala, and Helal A. Sheikh, in what he calls one of the “most consequential elections in recent memory,” especially with two-thirds of city council members reaching term limits
and the election for a new mayor. “We cannot have people that have zero experience. I have a fulltime job. I have 20 years of tenure serving this city. We’re losing brain power. We can’t afford to have unexperienced people that are learning on the job that will make decisions for nine million people. This is something our voters should reflect on,” Alamarie said. “At the end of the day, those that are coming out of nowhere that want to run for city council should know they need experience. With inflation, with the stock market, things are going to get really expensive, from the cost of living to housing prices, to property taxes, and we need someone who can adjust prices and tax rates. Average New Yorkers are suffering, and they will continue to suffer if we don’t put the right person in office or someone not making decisions based on knowledge, education and experience.” To learn more about Kaled Alamarie and the issues he stands for, check out www. votekaled.com

A Man vs. The Political Machine Dear Editor: In my first editorial, I stated I would cast my June 22nd Republican primary ballot for Steve Sirgiovanni for New York City Council, City Council District 32. It was a blow to the gut, after so many people showed their support for this candidate, that the powers that
Page 19
THURSDAY, MAY 20, 2021 be would do everything in their power to prevent him from representing you. I am proud to say that I still intend to vote for Steve on June 22nd. While you may have heard there was no longer a Republican primary, allow me to tell you the facts. A New York appellate court has unanimously overturned an attempt by the Queens Republican Party to remove Steve Sirgiovanni from the Republican ballot for the June 22 primary election over a trivial and inconsequential technical issue. It is the decision of the voters of the district to decide who will be their candidate in November, not the Queens GOP, any city official or the courts. Steve
Sirgivoanni and his team collected more than the required number of signatures to be included on the ballot. The efforts by the Queens County establishment have been nothing more than an attempt to hinder his campaign financially and by running out the clock on his ability to campaign and speak to the voters of the district. The unanimous New York Appellate Court ruling found that a technical rule violating the extraneous inclusion of a series of numbers below the candidates’ names on the designating petition pages was not sufficient to keep Steve or any of the candidates the Queens GOP tried to remove from the ballot. Justice has been served by the Appellate court, and Joann Ariola will face a primary challenge on June 22nd. The Appellate court ruling even stated the Supreme Court should have granted the petition to validate the designating petitions the Queens GOP sought to invalidate, and should have directed the Board of Elections
to place the candidates’ names on the ballots. This entire debacle could have been settled a month ago, but the Queens County machine and career politicians insisted that the establishment party organization could not dare be challenged by anyone else seeking to run for office. Only the people insider officials approve of could have their name appear on a ballot for office. Steve has already overcome incredible odds. With just a small grassroots team, he has already beaten the establishment, which is no small accomplishment when the rules favor career politicians. This court ruling means that the people have a choice again. You can decide for yourself who you want to represent you. The people will get to decide who goes to the general election, as it should have been from the beginning. A fair and open primary, not political theater is what this District deserves, to choose their next council member. Thomas Willis

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
SBP Ascites is an abnormal collection of fluid within the abdominal cavity. It may be caused by a number of diseases but is most commonly seen in people who have advanced liver disease that includes cirrhosis. Cirrhosis, a condition in which the liver is scarred and dysfunctional, may be caused by alcohol abuse, viral hepatitis, and many other diseases. People who have ascites may also have an impaired immune system, which puts them at increased risk of developing a life-threatening condition called spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP). Peritonitis is an infection of the lining (peritoneum) and
NYC, YOU’RE RIGHT, YOU SHOULD KNOW!
interior of the abdominal cavity. The peritoneum is normally sterile, but the peritoneal cavity contains the intestines and digestive tract, which abound with bacteria. Only the thin intestinal walls keep bacteria confined to the intestines, and a tiny hole in the intestinal wall may allow bacteria to escape into the peritoneum and cause peritonitis. The portal vein drains blood from the liver, and when cirrhosis develops the scarring of the veins in the liver cause the pressure in the portal vein to rise. This is called portal hypertension. In addition, the dysfunctional liver does not make enough circulat-
ing protein (albumin). The combination of these factors creates excess fluid, resulting in ascites and lower leg swelling. As noted above, people with cirrhosis and ascites also have weakened immune systems, which allows the composition of gut bacteria to change, causing intestinal inflammation. The inflamed intestines may then leak, and the escaping bacteria cause SBP. The most common symptoms of SBP are fever, chills, and abdominal pain, although some patients may have no symptoms. Some individuals may also experience confusion. A person with advanced liver disease and ascites who exhibits any of these symptoms should be hospitalized and tested for SBP. The biggest risk of SBP is sepsis, where the abdominal infection progresses to the whole body. Sepsis is often a fatal complication, as it causes cardiovascular collapse and death. Therefore, the risk of SBP must be quickly recognized and tested for. That can be done by using a needle and syringe to take a sample of the ascitic fluid. This is called
paracentesis. Once the fluid is obtained, intravenous antibiotics are begun and are continued for at least five to seven days. Anyone who has had SBP is at risk to develop it again. Oral antibiotics may be prescribed to those at risk for SBP. Patients with advanced liver disease and ascites who experience bleeding from the esophagus, stomach, or intestines should be given antibiotics to prevent the development of SBP. Ascites can be treated by lowering salt intake and/or using water pills (diuretics) to eliminate excess fluid. Because people with advanced liver disease have lower protein levels, they should be encouraged to eat a high-protein diet and maintain good nutrition. In addition, regular exercise is important to maintain muscle mass as muscle loss is part of liver disease. For more information on spontaneous bacterial peritonitis go to the U.S. National Library of Medicine at: medlineplus.gov/ency/ article/000648.htm Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

Listening Often, we are asked to listen and we feel compelled to give advice or talk about our own problems. My best friend, daughter, confidant sent me the following poem a few years ago when she was in a psychology class for nursing. The instructor made copies for each student to have and of course she knew I would love it or perhaps she was trying to tell me something. I am sharing because it had a profound impact on how I listen. “Listen” When I ask you to listen to
Page 27

me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I have asked. When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel this way, you are trampling on my feelings. When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me. Strange as that may seem. Listen: All that I ask you to do is listen. Not talk or do- just hear me. When you do something for me than I can and
need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy. But when you accept as a simple fact, that I feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and get about this business of understanding what’s behind them. So please listen and just hear me, and, if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn and I’ll listen to you. ~ Anonymous It can be difficult to be quiet and simply listen. We often feel the need to speak even if we have nothing to say. Some people are uncomfortable in silence and yet this can be a moment of awakening to just be with one another and hold space for whatever is going on in that person’s life. As a mother, I am constantly giving advice and instructions. Make your bed, do your laundry, clean your room, be nice to everyone you meet, be careful, moderation please, etc. My role as a parent is to provide a strong foundation for my children to become responsible, independent adults.
Spoiling them with lots of love but teaching them to walk the walk. Always do the right thing even when no one is looking and try not to be a follower, be a leader. Be kind, compassionate and generous. Learn to be a good listener. My family is a quiet group. We make time to listen to one another and if there is nothing to say we have learned to simply be present with one another. Cell phones still remain to be a challenge, but we are all trying to turn it off. No media, no social network, no noise. Time spent together with no distractions is a gift. Taking vacations as a family is precious and hopefully will happen in the future. We are now all adults learning to respectfully listen to one another. We don’t truly know what the future will bring so we’re living well in this moment. The quieter you become, the more you will hear. This column was written in 2019. In the past year I am thinking we all became better listeners. Here’s to living well once again.

The Green Eyed Monster Dear Enchantress, I am a jealous maniac. My boyfriend loves me, and sometimes he will bring up romantic or sexual occurrences he has had in the past, and it drives me nuts. I have mildly shared with him it upsets me and he can't seem to help it. He recently told me about an experience he had with two women. I had to stop him and he looked so confused and actually hurt when I stopped him. I hate being this green monster, I'm embarrassed that
I am so insecure! And now I am torturing myself about not feeling cool enough or sexy enough for him, and thinking he secretly wants to do all that he has done before, with or without me. He calmed me down, and reassured me after that last time, and now I feel like a dorky teenager and there is an awkwardness that I can't seem to shake. What should I do now? Should I bring it up again with him? Ugh. Help Dear Jealous Judy, This is a hot and a fiery sub-

ject. Jealousy is so human, so painful and so awkward. So, you're normal. I'll be straight up with you, these jealousy issues are yours, your boyfriend is kicking them up, but they have nothing to do with him. From what you share, it sounds like he loves you and does not want to hurt you. There are times men share these stories in a non-caring and mean way. It sounds like he is sharing with you as a way to deepen your relationship. By telling you intimate details of anything there is an opportunity to get closer together which equals more intimacy. Your jealous feelings are two things 1) an electricity and an energy in your mind and body being triggered to work with, 2) an opportunity to feel. A courageous way of doing something to help yourself, is to bring this up to him, and share this advice column with him. Yes! And then ask him to set a time, where you can ask a million questions about one of his experiences, and really don't hold back. Give yourself
a time frame (20 minutes or so) and see what happens, see how you feel, ask for loving touch if you need. What you resist will persist, so the more you try to push jealousy away, and shut your boyfriend up, the more it will haunt you. Good luck Sister, honor how human you are, and see how this can bring more intimacy into your relationship, more trust, and more truth. After all, I do own the Awkward Academy, so bring on the awkward. To ask Enchantress Shane a question, email her at support@enchantedembodiment. com Love, Enchantress Shane

Nicole Taylor-Lang knows show to stop traffic. Our freelancer, Nicole, rocking a neon Rockaway Times hoodie, was celebrating with members of the RT who were celebrating finishing the Summer Guide. HONORABLE MENTION! These five photos are more than honorable, they’re great! Picking a Top 30 In this year’s Rockaway Times Photo Contest was the toughest challenge yet in the popular contest that drew more than 1,300 entries. While not part of the official finalists in the running for the grand prize, the photos here will be made post-
er-sized and be installed at the ferry dock at Beach 108th Street around Memorial Day and will be seen and enjoyed by many thousands of ferry riders. Congratulations to the photographers! And thanks to co-sponsors: Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC), NYC Ferry, and NYC Parks.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING TERMS
The man behind the column, Eric Jayden. By Eric Jayden
This is another question that I receive constantly in my email box, "What do the wrestling terms mean?" So, in today's edition we take a look into the language of wrestling. Professional wrestling has its roots going back to the early days of traveling carnivals and circuses. In an effort the keep wrestling secrets concealed wrestlers created their own language often referred to
as "carny language or speaking carny" to communicate with each other during matches. As wrestling progressed throughout the years, wrestlers continue to protect the business by evolving the wrestling language. In recent years, widespread discussion on the internet has popularized many wrestling terms. Here are some of the most popular terms: Kayfabe - stands for the presentation of professional wrestling being entirely legitimate and unscripted. This term is used frequently to protect the secrets of the wrestling business. Heel(s) - a person(s) who is considered a villain and are hated by the wrestling fans. Babyface(s) - a person(s) who is considered heroic and are cheered by the wrestling fans. A baby face can also be referred as "The Face." Blading - is when a wrestler intentionally cuts themselves to provoke bleeding during a
match. This is done to highlight the legitimacy of the match. Also referred to as juicing, gigging and getting color. Booker - is the person in charge a setting up the wrestling matches and storylines. Angle - a term used for a storyline that is the driving force behind pro wrestling. Bump - is a term referring to the act of a wrestler hitting the ground or mat. Gimmick - is a character that is played by the wrestler which defines the way he acts, how he dresses and whether he wrestles as a Heel or Babyface. This term is also used to refer to wrestling props use on a show. All these terms were created in an effort not only to keep the excitement of professional wrestling alive, but also the "Suspension of Disbelief." When you watch a professional wrestling match, I want to believe in the good guy, or you might want to
believe in the bad guy and that's what makes wrestling exciting. You can lose yourself in the fight of Good vs Evil or Evil versus Evil, whichever you decide, just remember to have fun. The question of the week comes from Alex D. in Rockaway Park he asked, "When do you see pro wrestling shows coming back to the big arenas?" That's a great question, Alex, and fortunately we should start seeing live wrestling events again in big arenas very soon. As pandemic restrictions are lessened, this provides opportunities to bring back live pro wrestling in the big arenas by the middle of 2021. We're just going to have to wait and see but Wrestling Is Coming Back Live! Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Instagram @ badguysexiness and on Twitter @followthebadguy. Have a great week!
