A Different Kind of Summer WHAT’S IN STORE FOR LOCAL BEACHES By Katie McFadden
This summer will be different. Normally as we approach Memorial Day weekend, there is plenty to celebrate with the beach opening for the season, concessions back up and running and more. As with everything else, coronavirus has called for some changes in every aspect of the beginning of the beach season. From what’s open to what’s not from Rockaway to Riis Park, here’s a rundown. Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo gave the greenlight for the state to open beaches, with some limits in mind. He also gave local jurisdictions the power to enact a plan for whether or not to open beaches. Mayor Bill de Blasio has called for New York City beaches to be closed. But the language behind this may be causing con-
Metal fencing has been put in position in the event that the beaches need to be closed.
fusion. A week after Labor Day, the beaches typically “close” for the season, meaning lifeguards are off duty until Memorial Day weekend. This Memorial
Day, there will be no lifeguards, meaning the beaches will remain “closed” to swimming. But as they are in the winter, people will still be able to access the sand to sit and walk on. The ocean is off limits. In addition to no swimming, the city asks beachgoers to refrain from large gatherings, parties and sports. As the city positioned metal fencing near beach openings this week, it served as a reminder that more limits may be put in place if these rules are openly flouted. “We’re going to give people a chance to get it right, if people don’t get it right, if we start to see a lot of violations of those rules, up will come the fences,” de Blasio said during a press conference on Sunday, May 17. Parks Enforcement Patrol, NYPD and School Safety officers will be providing reminders for people to maintain
social distance, to stay out of the water, and to avoid sports, parties and large gatherings. Individual instances here and there will not cause beaches to close, but a blatant disregard may cause the city to install the fences at beach entrances, closing the sand to all. A factor behind de Blasio’s decision is to deter crowds from flocking to city beaches at a time when social distancing is still being suggested to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the hardest-hit city in the world. With this comes the desire to keep people off of public trains, buses and ferries that crowds utilize to get to the beach, while allowing those who live directly in local beach communities to enjoy access. “I don’t want a lot of people on the A Train. I don’t want a lot of people going on Continued on page 6

BOYLEING POINTS
Weaving History Rick Horan has been a good sport, wait, maybe sport isn’t the right word. Rick has been ok with me filming his basketball exploits and posting his work on Facebook and YouTube. People always ask if he’s that bad. He is. (See the horror online by searching Two Bikes and a Ball). Fortunately, there is no photographic evidence (thank god) but I believe a first-ever in the annals of
basketball was achieved this past Saturday. Three men, each over 60 years old, suffering from a serious case of basketball jones, and dying for a sweat found an outdoor court with hoops still on the backboard. In keeping with the social distance requirements of the day, the men plotted out some basketball drills and games, drawing upon memories of when kids played
outdoors. They soon realized that playing H-O-R-S-E and other shooting games was great fun but they didn’t quite trigger the sweat glands. Someone came up with the dimwitted idea to do a full court three-man weave. And they did. And it was here, that I think history was made. For those who don’t know what a three-man weave is, let’s just say it’s like running and doing figure eights while passing a ball back and forth. In this case, it was more like figure sixes or sevens because there were some seriously disjointed action and more weaving than a guy coming out of bar at 4 in the morning. It wasn’t poetry in motion but there was motion. Slow motion, yes, but still, it was thrilling and exciting because of the danger. The three men careened towards each other repeatedly but escaped the crash each time. The joy ride, and that’s what it was, by the look on their faces, ended when one of
Page 5 the stooges made a lay-up. If they missed, they had to run it back, like the old days. One player who shall remain nameless, (OLHC, Xaverian ’77) and John Cosgrove (OLHC, City Champion, Loughlin ’76) and this other guy (STA, Nazareth ’77) have to be the first-ever trio to run a 3-man weave, fullcourt, on a hard outdoor surface, at such a decrepit age. During a pandemic. Like a hip, it’s a record that can be broken. Some 70-year-olds in Florida are probably reading this and loosening up. But the guys above, they’re the Neil Armstrongs, the first ever to do a three-man weave during a pandemic, in public. Man, there’s something to be said for reaching an age where nothing embarrasses you. So when I get asked, when are you going to give up basketball, I just say I can’t stop while I’m still setting records. And besides, it’s always fun to keep playing the game you're getting worse at!

buses to Orchard Beach. I want us to recognize we still have to fight back this disease,” de Blasio said. “We don’t want to take away from our local communities. Hundreds of thousands of people live in those communities. We don’t want to take away their right to walk on that beach, but again, if we start to see abuse of that, we’re going to take tougher measures.” Looking ahead, the city is preparing for the possibility of opening the beaches to swimming sometime later this summer. The process to hire returning lifeguards began this week, allowing them to start taking the qualification test and CPR, or setting up appointments to train in pools, which have been closed since March. No start date for lifeguards has been set, but the city says lifeguards will be trained and ready to staff the beaches when de Blasio says they can. In a virtual Community Board 14 meeting, Queens Parks Commissioner Michael Dockett provided some more details about the summer. Beachgoers will notice more signs saying, “Beach closed to swimming” at beach entrances, and enforcement with additional Parks Enforcement Patrol officers, NYPD and school safety officers providing masks on the boardwalk and educating the public about social distancing on the beach and discouraging crowding. Summonses and arrests will not be used to enforce social distancing, but rather verbal persuasion. In some cases, stricter enforcement may be necessary. Surfers will be permitted to access the water on designated surfing beaches. Surf schools will not be permitted to open. All others will be asked to leave the water, much in the same way they are after lifeguards normally go off duty at 6 p.m. Beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers and blankets are allowed. Fishing is allowed in designated sections. To alert the city about beaches being closed
The Rockaway Times to swimming, signs will be posted before local bridges to Rockaway, on highways and potentially on public transportation. Food services, meaning concessions, are permitted to open, but with several factors in mind including social distancing, masks, simplified menus, to-go service only and more. Rockaway’s boardwalk concessionaires are still trying to navigate these new rules, so the concessions will not be open at this time. Bathroom facilities will be open. In Riis Park, the National Park Service is looking toward the city for guidance. Like the city beaches, Riis Park will be accessible for passive recreation, such as walking and running. Sports and large gatherings are not permitted. There will be no lifeguards on duty for Memorial Day weekend. According to a federal lifeguard who spoke with The Rockaway Times, they were last told that NPS is looking to have lifeguards in place when city beaches also have lifeguards. However, as federal lifeguards start testing as early as December for the upcoming season, many of the lifeguards are qualified and ready to man the beaches as soon as they’re told. To try to reduce crowds, the Riis Park parking lot will be reduced to 50% capacity. This weekend, fees will not be collected for the lot, but they will resume in June. The Rockaway Times reached out to those behind Riis Park Beach Bazaar to inquire about concessions but did not receive a response by press time. As of now, the restaurant, The Dropout will continue to serve food and drinks for takeout, as well as the Riis Park Beach Café. Congregating inside or outside of the food providers is prohibited. Limited bathroom facilities will be available. Please note that all of these requirements are subject to change this summer. One thing might feel normal this Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, May 22 at noon, Connolly's will be open, although serving piña coladas to go from a table out front.

Remembering the Fallen This and every Memorial Day, we remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Those who died serving this country. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work putting faces and details to the names on the plaques of the Doughboy monument on Beach 95th Street. Among the 146 names are veterans from WWI, WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War who had a local connection. Schwach has established the “Rockaway Beach, NY Doughboy and Doughgirl Memorials” Facebook page to share their stories. In honor of Memorial Day, we’re sharing a few in The Rockaway Times, but check out the Facebook page for the many, many more. Frank Florio was a Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. He was born 11/20/1947 in Brooklyn and he and his family moved to Edgemere in 1963. Florio graduated from Far Rockaway High School and worked for the Associated
Press before joining the Marines 12/28/1965, "because he (felt) owed it his country." He was trained as a Radio Telegraph Operator in an 81 mm mortar platoon, assigned to the Headquarters and Service Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division and was sent to Vietnam. On 12/28/1967, two years to the day of his enlistment, he was shot and killed in combat in Quang Nam Province. He was buried at St. Charles Cemetery in Pinelawn.

This parade typically features local veteran groups, civic associations, schools and other organizations showing their support down Rockaway Beach Boulevard, making stops at Memorial Circle on Beach 121st Street and the Doughboy/ Doughgirl Monuments on Beach 95th Street. Instead, the American Legion asks that 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25, that “you pause and reflect on the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for these United States of America.” In response to this, Larry Racioppo is sharing these great photos of parades past to honor those who fought for this country.

PARADE IN ROCKAWAY

I’m going to miss this year’s Memorial Day Parade. It’s one of the events that make Rockaway feel special, more like a small town, than part of a great city. I love how the parade honors U.S. veterans, especially the shrinking number of those who fought in World War II. I think of my father and uncles, sons of Italian immigrants, who served and are now gone. – By Larry Racioppo – All Photos copyright 2020 Larry Racioppo

The Rockaway Hotel is Truly Rockaway By Katie McFadden
You wake up to the warmth and light of the morning sun after a good night’s rest in your comfy bed. Look to your right, out the windows of your balcony doors, past the rows of tiny bungalows below to the horizon and take in the glimmer upon the ocean as the waves crash upon the shore. Step out onto your terrace and breathe in that salty ocean air. You’ll be starting your day at the beach shortly, after a quick stop at the Greenhouse Café for coffee, and a hop, skip and a jump to the sand. After a few hours soaking up the sun and ocean breezes, you head back to your home away from home for your appointment at Spa Rockaway, soaking in all the relaxation of that deep-tissue massage. When the massage is over, continue your relaxation poolside, sipping a cocktail in one of the cabanas before heading back to your room to get ready for the night. Catch a culinary delight at Margie’s, the restaurant below, and end your night on top—at the rooftop bar. Enjoy a nightcap or two as you take in the last hues of the sunset as they transition to the lights of the New York City skyline that shine beyond Jamaica Bay, while reflecting on your perfect day spent at The Rockaway Hotel. That day may be within reach as the long-awaited hotel is expected to open this summer. For the Tubridy family, a hotel in their own backyard was a longtime dream. Now that dream is on the verge of becoming a reality with hopes of a mid-summer opening, despite the latest obstacle of coronavirus. But if there’s anything Rockaway knows how to do, it’s overcome obstacles, and while The Rockaway Hotel aims to reach a market far beyond the peninsula, guests will get to experience that local spirit in almost every aspect, with the experience of a family with several generations of sand in their toes, and partners that will help take it to the next level. On Thursday, May 14, The
Rockaway Times got an onsite tour of what’s to come from one of the owners, Dan “Dee” Tubridy. With 53 hotel rooms, offering a can’t-beat view of the bay or ocean, plus eight longer-stay suites, the hotel will finally provide a large one-stop shop for visitors to stay. With an 88-seat restaurant serving American classics and more, to poolside menus with health-conscious options, to a graband-go corner store offering coffee and quick items like A room with a view. sandwiches, guests will never go hungry. With a pool offering 61 seats plus another 81 at the outdoor bar and cabanas to lounge in, guests can opt to enjoy a day at the pool if the beach isn’t calling their name. With an on-site clothing store, Warm, guests can pick up something new or something they may have forgotten at home, from a wide choice of high-end to casual attire. With poolside bars, restaurant bars and even a rooftop bar offering unbeatable views, guests can indulge in cocktails while enjoying different atmospheres. With underground valet park-

top space available for endless party possibilities or community programming, the hotel will consistently offer ways to meet the needs of both the community, and of course, the guests. Those behind The Rockaway Hotel are hoping to tap into a broad market of guests, including corporations looking for a place to hold events. “Not many people believe corporations will come down here, but I know from experience— they’re already down here. They just had no place to go,” Dee Tubridy said. The hotel will not only give corporations a place to stay by the beach,
but now a large venue for locals to hold big events such as weddings for up to 350 people with multiple event spaces and onsite catering, as well as a place for visitors to stay afterwards. While the owners anticipate guests being mostly those from out-of-town, as with any hotel model, most aspects of The Rockaway Hotel will be accessible to all. “This will be like Rockaway’s living room—a place that will be welcoming to all,” Dee Tubridy said. The local community will be able to access all bars and eateries within the hotel, lounge areas to use as a workspace, the spa, programming and even the pool with a day pass. “This is not exclusive. We’re embracing the local vibe and we want locals to feel like this is theirs,” Tubridy said. And locals will notice the neighborhood tieins throughout, that will give new visitors a welcoming sample of all that Rockaway has to offer. Tubridy brothers, Dee and Terence, those behind In Good Company Hospitality, have brought their local experience to this project, which is being elevated by partners, 7G Realty, led by Jon Krasner, who brings his experience of running the Hero Beach Club in Montauk to the table, and partner, Michi Jigarjian, who is spearheading arts and cultural programming for hotel guests and locals alike. Everything from the bigger aspects to the most minute details showcase local love. The Continued on page 17

THE ROCKAWAY HOTEL IS TRULY ROCKAWAY Continued from Page 16 hotel’s main restaurant—Margie’s—has personal meaning to the Tubridys, as it is named after their grandmother. “Margie Murphy was a host of hosts. Music, joy and laughter is what she brought to any room. She loved Rockaway, and its people, and as her grandsons, we couldn’t think of a better way to honor her memory by naming the restaurant after her. It’s our grandparents’ stories about old Rockaway that have inspired this project,” Terence Tubridy said. The spa is none other than Spa Rockaway. Owner Pat Rorke is excited about the new location, where she says her grandparents used to rent a summer place in the 1940s. The spa will offer a menu of services from massage to facials with ocean-based luxury in mind, such as making use of seaweed and other items, as well as some of the best treatments available in the world, such as advanced facial treatments and services such as EmSculpt, embraced by celebrities. Rorke is proud to offer Spa Rockaway’s services at the hotel and to be a part of this new endeavor. “Rockaway should have this. We should have a beautiful hotel in our neighborhood, and I think this will be the start of great things. We deserve it,” she said. Even some of the hotel’s smallest details have Rockaway in mind. In the bars, you’ll find some local beers from Rockaway Brewing Company. In the bathrooms you’ll find soaps and bath products from local brand, Goldie’s. On terraces, you’ll find plants in macramé hangers produced by Rockaway Beach-based artist Fabiola Sheppard of Handmade Cocoon. The hotel will partner with local businesses and organizations to offer some programming in art, culture and environmental conservation. This includes surf lessons provided by Locals Surf School and other wellness options. The hotel will
THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2020 sponsor various art projects, some in partnership with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Park Conservancy and the Rockaway Artists Alliance. One such project is the third iteration of the Rockaway Arts Festival. The Liberty Bell Project, a virtual public art installation by Nancy Baker Cahill, produced by JBRPC and Art Production Fund, is set to launch on July 4th, and by its nature can be enjoyed safely while following social distancing guidelines. The hotel is also doing outreach, serving as a main sponsor of the neighboring Seaside Playground’s Big Yard Mural by the students of Waterside Children’s Studio School, set to launch in September. Tubridy says they also plan to work with those at the St. John’s Boys Home, offering some of the residents a place to train and learn about culinary and hospitality trades. Some programming and even some aspects of the hotel may be limited due to the current circumstance of coronavirus complicating plans and certain restrictions in place. Construction is ongoing, full-speed ahead, which Tubridy anticipates being complete by the end of June for a late June/ early July opening. But as of right now, just getting open is the main goal. “I hope that we’re allowed to open. That’s really all I can hope for and we’ll deal with the restrictions as they come, but it would be really terrible if we lost the whole summer because opening this hotel in the off-season would be challenging,” Tubridy said. In the meantime, they’re hopeful. Reservations opened earlier this month, with rooms available starting in August. Despite coronavirus disrupting plans, Dee says the reservations are rolling in, from those near and far. “They’re booking! The people are booking from all over. We have one coming from Chicago and even one from Ireland,” Dee Tubridy said. “Let’s get this open!” Opening rates for the hotel start at $350 a night for the peak season. Years ago, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder said, "I have never known a community like Broad Channel, where they are always looking for any reason to be together." On Sunday, May 17, Broad Channel came together to offer love, best wishes and support for their own Rocco Pisani and his family. Ten-year-old Rocco was recently diagnosed with leukemia, and since he couldn't
leave the hospital, one hundred or so cars and hundreds of neighbors, family and friends brought his Broad Channel home to him. They lined up behind 17th Road Park in a long, long homemade parade. Each car then rolled up East 16th Road, honking horns, waving, show-
ing handmade signs and decorations and all being streamed live via Facebook to Rocco in his hospital room. Even the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department came out in force with sirens wailing. As his mom, Jamie Buttner Pisani posted to Face-

A thank you to our courageous doctors, nurses, first responders on the front line for your continued work in caring for so many people affected with this virus. How can we help you? I have heard from many reliable sources that we, the people in our community can HELP by wearing a mask when we go out in public. If you are walking, biking, dog walking, running, shopping, PLEASE keep to a SOCIAL DISTANCE and follow the New York State and New York City Mandatory guideline. I think if doctors and nurses can wear them all day, we can wear them when we are out in public. Yes, a mask may be uncomfortable, but it serves a big purpose. It demonstrates our respect for the health and safety of others; it helps our doctors and nurses in fighting the virus. It is protecting friends, neighbors, family and strangers. It is caring about others. I hope the next time I see you on a walk, I can give you a thumb’s up for wearing a mask! Let’s all do our part to flatten the curve!

Rockaway’s Houses of Worship Keep the Community Connected By Marina Cregan
As week nine of our quarantine commences, St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is happily opening its doors to its Roman Catholic congregants. Unfortunately, Houses of Worship in New York City are not nearly as blessed. The Rockaway Times reached out to some of the spiritual leaders on the peninsula for an update on how they are coping and how they are uplifting the spirits of their followers during this challenging time. Following stay-at-home orders, Rabbi Slome from the West End Temple has arranged weekly Zoom services every Friday night. Understanding that many people who belong to the temple spend most of their days on Zoom for work or school, Rabbi Slome makes it a priority to have their Zoom services abbreviated, lasting a little bit less than an hour in total. “We’re not a large com-

munity (75 members), but a lot of people show up for our Friday night services...We have probably anywhere between 20-30 people (and families) who attend every week,” Slome said. Additionally, Rabbi Slome was happy to report that the West End Temple also hosts Zoom meets for their religious school on Sundays, as well as those children
who are celebrating their bar/ bat mitzvahs who meet with their teacher via Zoom every Wednesday. Rabbi Slome said, “I think one of the best things about our meetings on Zoom is that we get to see each other’s faces. I like to keep Zoom on after the service ends for a few minutes so people can speak with each other.” Aside from arranging Zoom services for
members of the West End Temple, Rabbi Slome tries her best to keep in touch personally with members, especially those who are elderly or are living alone. “I just hope everybody is hanging in there, and finding constructive ways to manage this social isolation.” Another synagogue actively trying to stay connected with its members is Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park. Rabbi Matt Carl told The Rockaway Times that he holds at least three Zoom services a week, as well as any additional Zoom services for special holidays such as Passover and Holocaust Memorial Day. “Obviously it’s not the same, but we’re getting together and singing shabbat songs over Zoom, and then I give a short sermon,” Rabbi Carl said. Rabbi Carl also happily reported that from his perspective, he Continued on page 23

COMMUNITY CONNECTED Continued from Page 22 believes that people have been incredibly understanding and flexible to this new way of life. When shelter in place orders were first instituted in NYC, Rabbi Carl knew live streaming would be a challenge. He sent an email to all members of the synagogue explaining how they can join Zoom services. If they needed any additional help, he made himself available. Temple Beth-El is proud that it is now streaming services nationally. Some of its members who are snowbirds attend weekly services from Florida, as well as Rabbi Carl’s parents who tune in all the way from California. “It’s almost a ‘fun’ thing now, because it’s keeping everyone connected... These people who can’t return back to Rockaway are now able to participate even more via Zoom,” Rabbi Carl said. And although things are going smoothly for their Zoom services, Rabbi Carl is already thinking about the high holidays and what they will do to celebrate once the city permits. St. Rose of Lima Church has a unique challenge. Many of their parishioners are not fluent in English. Therefore, their Sunday Masses are streamed in three different languages: English, Polish, and Spanish. If you are unable to stream the mass live via Facebook, Pastor Rodriguez tapes them and puts them on YouTube. Parishioners can then watch Mass in the language of their choice at a time that is convenient. Live streaming is also available through Facebook via Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer. His Masses are both live and recorded from
Rabbi Slome Zoom chats with some of the congregants of West End Temple.
St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Roman Catholic Church. Parish members from both Rockaway Beach and Broad Channel are encouraged to stream these Masses and are also able to view Masses via the St. Camillus website which has links for NetTV and other services. When The Rockaway Times reached out to the dynamic duo at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church by FaceTime call, we were met with laughter and smiles. Rev. William F. Sweeney and Rev. Jim Cunningham, better known as Fr. Bill and Fr. Jim, are using this time to show parishioners their humanity and compassion. “We’re finding out that what we’re doing is connecting people in the midst of isolation. They want to come to Mass, and be a part of something...People are balanced, happy, and not afraid,” Fr. Jim said in regard to their live streaming of Facebook masses. Parishioners have noted how enjoyable it is that Mass is now “interactive.” What is meant
by that, is the utilization of Facebook’s live chat. Once the streaming begins, parishioners comment about the altar, send well wishes, and make prayer requests. The priests respond during Mass, and will add the prayer requests to the petitions. Later, they read the chat and reach out to those in need. “We get a lot of phone calls, texts, and FaceTimes from parishioners that just want to talk and pray with us. Espe-
cially from families who have lost someone recently. They are allowed to bring their family outside the church, socially distanced, and we bless them before heading to the cemetery,” Fr. Jim said. Both priests continuously try their best to come up with creative ways to reach out and stay in touch with parishioners. As Fr. Bill said, “It’s a new way of evangelization.” Each day on the liturgical calendar poses a new challenge, but that does not stop Fr. Bill and Fr. Jim.. This past Sunday, May 17, was the Crowning of Mary. Normally, this would have been done by the First Communicants. Instead, essential worker, Siobhan Keenan Fitzgerald, bestowed the beautiful flowers on the statue of Mary outside of Church, which was also streamed live on Facebook. In the midst of this new normal, The Rockaway Times wishes to congratulate Fr. Jim on his 25th Anniversary of the Priesthood. This event was celebrated with a special mass on Wednesday, May 20. Additional celebrations are being planned post-quarantine.

Community Board 14 May Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan
Due to the shelter-in-place orders that still remain for NYC, Community Board 14 (CB14) decided to hold its May meeting via Zoom, on Tuesday, May 19. This was the first time CB14 was able to have a meeting since March, and 64 participants joined in to watch and participate in the Zoom conference. Although it was hard at first for members to adjust to the Zoom platform, the meeting proved to be successful for the community in providing important updates regarding COVID-19, the status of our beaches this summer, as well as any existing projects that were discussed during CB14’s March meeting. The meeting began with the usual report from the Chair, Dolores Orr, who began expressing her condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one due to COVID-19, or who is sick with the virus. As Orr continued, she provided an update on the Arverne East Project. Orr stated that this project was approved a while ago, but now the new format is completely different from what CB14 had originally approved. Despite the Mayor’s office putting the ULURP process on hold, Housing Preservation Development (HPD) is trying to push CB14 to hold a virtual meeting so they can speed this process up. However, CB14 does not want to hold a virtual meeting, because it will not give the community the full opportunity they deserve to be involved. Orr continued with her report, happily reporting that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) denied the Clean Waters Certificate that the Williams Pipeline needed to go forward with a new pipeline. Lastly, Orr said that the City Planning Committee had reached out to her regarding Rockaway’s challenges during the pandemic. Orr responded that she found a lot of people in affordable housing and apartment buildings are struggling to fully isolate themselves. She suggested that all future building projects should include two
bedrooms and adding at least a half bath in one bedroom, so people have the opportunity to be fully isolated if necessary. Following Orr’s report, Jon Gaska provided an update regarding the status of beaches and boardwalk for this summer. He stated that the 100th and 101 precincts will have 20 school safety agents patrolling the boardwalk, seven days a week, from 10-6 p.m. Gaska then continued by stating that CB14 had written a letter to DOT in the beginning of the pandemic, not knowing what would be open. They suggested having electronic transportation signs on the Belt Parkway and before both Cross Bay and Marine Park Bridge, in order to let people who are driving into Rockaway know what is open and what’s not. He concluded stating that the DOT liked this idea and will start to put signs up. Gaska reached out to the MTA to do the same but has not received a response. Councilman Donovan Richards spoke briefly to CB14 addressing important updates regarding COVID-19 and its status in Queens. Sadly, he reported that several hundred people have died across the peninsula. He also stated that on the Peninsula Hospital site they had re-zoned, the developer has offered about 30,000 sq. ft to the city so they can build a Health and Hospitals facility. Because we only have one hospital on the peninsula, Richards said, “I think now is an opportune time as federal dollars come down for us to take advantage of that.” Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. followed Richards, by stating that he is working closely with the Parks Commissioner on ensuring that beaches will be open this summer. He stated, “If beaches are open, then so is the water.” Addabbo also urged anyone who is having trouble with their unemployment claims to call his office, and they will help get you in touch with their con-

tact service at unemployment. To that, Assemblywoman Stacey Pfeffer Amato, stated that some people who are self-employed feel they don’t qualify for unemployment. But, she urged everyone who was self-employed to check out unemployment’s self-employed package. Amato also provided a positive update regarding the stores at the MTA-owned property on Beach 116th. Stores such as the Last Stop Cafe, and A & J Jewelry Corp. will remain open at least through the end of the year. After our elected officials spoke, Queens Parks Commissioner Michael Dockett provided important updates regarding beaches for the summer. He stated that starting Memorial Day weekend, there will be no large gatherings on beaches, and swimming is prohibited. Dockett said that beach visits should not last all day, and people shouldn’t remain on the beach longer than about two hours. He also stated that restrooms will be open every day from 6 a.m.-10 p.m, and they will be cleaned thoroughly. Social distancing will be encouraged within the restrooms. Dockett then continued stating that food service on the boardwalk will be allowed, but all workers must wear masks, have hand sanitizer readily available for employees/customers, to-go service only, and if online menus can be created by the seller, that is the ideal option for ordering. Finally, Dockett concluded by stating the Parks Dept. is starting to train existing lifeguards, who are able to recertify their qualifications,
this week, so they are prepared when the Mayor opens the waters. Although Dockett’s report seemed promising from the Parks’ perspective, many CB14 members questioned how these new social distancing measures will play out once the weather starts getting warmer. Dockett responded by saying these are simply temporary measures, and if people refuse to follow orders, then more drastic and permanent measures will be taken to secure our beaches. The last report was brought by NYC Dept. of Health’s, Chae No. He reported that as of Monday, May 18, the numbers of COVID-19 cases across NYC were dropping, but they are still there and stressed the importance of everyone wearing face coverings of some sort whenever they leave their home. The focus of his report was on the new, Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C), which is found mainly in children and has a link to COVID-19. No stated that common symptoms of MIS-C are fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, red/ pink eyes and lips, as well as possible peeling of the skin. He assured the community that NYS is working closely with the CDC in order to find out more about this virus and will provide future updates. Because of such uncertainty revolving around MIS-C, CB14 members asked questions regarding how contagious it is. No responded that the CDC and DOH are still unsure how contagious MIS-C is, but they strongly urge any child suspected of the virus to self-quarantine, especially if they are in the house with someone who has symptoms or has been diagnosed with COVID-19. No concluded his report by stating that NY will open 10 new testing sites throughout the five boroughs on May 25, one of which will be in Rockaway, and recommended everyone to be tested regardless of age.

Not to mention how he is putting himself before lives by giving the thumbs up to armed protestors for the sake of dividing us for his own political purpose. Cuomo has been imploring the federal government for aid to both state and local governments throughout the stimulus votes. Right now, we are in danger of deep budget cuts and we are in danger of losing the ferry, cuts to police, firefighters, and teachers. You can kiss full day pre-kindergarten and 3-K goodbye. Even the generous pensions that many enjoy, risk being slashed. Cuomo has made the case that NY contributes vastly more to the federal government than it receives, so why aren’t we getting the aid we deserve? It comes down to hatred. It took the Congress three months to approve aid to NY and NJ after Hurricane Sandy. Within a week, aid was given to Louisiana and Houston and supported by NY. This deep-rooted contempt by the red states and the current administration is going to cost us dearly and this paper is complicit if it doesn’t support and share the truth about our leaders who are doing the right thing at this time. Elsewhere Please Dear Editor: We are long-term bungalow residents and owners (50+ years) of Beach 109th Street. We cherish our summer homes and are grateful to be a part of this wonderful Rockaway community. However, in recent years our quality of life is being adversely affected by the increasingly growing population of feral cats. They are being fed underneath our windows on Shore Front and make their homes beneath our bungalows. As a result, we are subjected to the smell of feces each time the wind blows, the odor of cat spray in our homes, dead birds in our court, porch posts being destroyed because they have become scratching posts, and a flare up of allergy symptoms. Although the different groups of people who feed these feral cats, have been asked to stop, they contend it is the humane thing to do. All of us are pet owners cats and dogs alike. We are not asking for the people to stop feeding the cats; we are only asking that they do it in a different location, so that we might have a healthier and more pleasant quality of life. ATTENTION FAR ROCKAWAY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES By Sharon Gabriel
If you graduated from Far Rockaway High School in the 1980s or 90s, groups of alumni are looking for you. In 2022, Far Rockaway High School will be 125 year old. Beginning in 1897, Far Rockaway was the only high school on the Rockaway Peninsula until Beach Channel High School was built. The FRHS 125th Organizing Committee is forming a team of interested alumni to work on that special event. We are looking for a few alumni from the ‘80s and ‘90s and through 2011 to join the organizing committee who are putting together a special event. Far Rockaway High School opened with 19 students and until the 1919-1920 school year, was housed within P.S, 39 which was demolished, and a new school replaced it and it became P.S. 53. In 1929, FRHS moved to the current building on 25th
Street. Most children in the Rockaways attended Far Rockaway High School and have fond remembrances (mostly good) of their years there. You might remember being on the football team, basketball team, tennis team, cheerleaders, majorettes, the rifle club and many more activities. The girls having to wear those horrible gym suits, having to swim in the chlorinated pool, one of your favorite teachers or your least favorite. In any event, your remembrances and help are needed a we go forward to 125 years. Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Truth About Lying A while ago I was asked to write a column about why patients lie to their doctors. That got me to thinking about what I have learned in the past thirty-seven years since I started my career as a primary care physician, or PCP. Since I write my columns well in advance of the date they will run, this was the first chance I had to answer that question. It is said that the best way to learn something is to actually do it, and I have learned much over the years. The keystone to good medical care is communication. Consider, if you will, a bicycle wheel. Medical
communication is akin to that wheel. At the hub is the PCP. Specialists are located along the rim and tire. The spokes of the wheel represent the twoway communication between the patient’s specialists and PCP. This communication, in whatever form it may take, is vital to the health of the patient. The patient is riding the bicycle, causing the wheel to spin. If there is no communication between the PCP and specialists, the wheel breaks and the patient falls off. All too often, it has been my experience that many specialists do not communicate with
the PCP. When I refer a patient to a specialist, I make it a point to reach out to him or her to explain the reason for the referral. When this happens, the odds of my hearing back from the specialist are good. However, patients frequently go to specialists on their own. When they do, I rarely hear from that specialist. It is not uncommon for a patient to tell me during a visit that he/she was hospitalized or had surgery, a heart attack, etc. without me ever being made aware of it. The patient may be on medications that are completely different from what I thought they were on because the specialist changed them and didn’t inform me. This creates a dangerous situation for the patient because, in case of an emergency, an ER or hospital is more likely to reach out to the patient’s PCP, not a specialist. If that happens and the PCP is unaware of the patient’s current medical state, a disaster may ensue. Likewise, proper and accu-
Page 27 rate communication between the doctor and patient is also vital. I don’t believe that patients willfully lie to their doctor, but they may alter or leave out details out of embarrassment. For example, if you drink six beers a day, don’t say you only drink on weekends. This may mislead the doctor and cause an incorrect diagnosis. In addition, the doctor must ensure that the patient fully understands the doctor’s directions. Sometimes, a follow-up call to the patient helps to ensure that the patient is fully aware of what had been discussed. Primary care medicine is a very fulfilling career choice but is not easy. Keeping current with a patient’s ongoing medical situation can be challenging. Be sure that your PCP is fully aware of any changes in your medical condition and is involved with your treatment choices. After all, it is your health that is at stake. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com
After serving the people of Rockaway for 37 years,
Peter Galvin, MD Is retiring. His office will be permanently closed after June 30, 2020. Patients may obtain their original medical record from the office or have a copy sent to their new medical provider. Please contact the office regarding your records and/or for a recommendation for a new healthcare provider. 120-05 Newport Avenue 718-474-5027 BTW Dr. Galvin plans to continue writing his medical column for this newspaper.

KINDNESS I just witnessed a terrible exchange between an adult and a teenager. I heard yelling on the part of the adult— not the exact words, but I did hear the response from the teenager: cursing out the adult, very, very harsh, disgusting things as he walked away and up the dune. After some contemplation, I felt sorry for the teenager. Perhaps all of what is going on is getting to him and he lashed out. I’m sure there is a lot more to it but what is in that teenager that made him talk that way—what feelings are inside of him? I referred back to a column
of mine from a little less than two years ago on “Kindness. I try to imagine how I would have to feel inside to utter such things. . . and it goes back to the inner self. What we think, say and do in relation to ourselves and others becomes a part of our inner selves: the source of our being and the divineness that connects us to every living thing. “Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch
your character; it becomes your destiny. (Lao Tzu, philosopher and prophet of ancient China) We can have control over how we think, what we say and how we act. We can think, speak and act negatively/meanly or we can think, speak and act positively/kindly. If the teenagers witness people acting in kindness, that will be their example. The first kindness is to oneself. Why are we sometimes so hard on ourselves? There really is no reason for it. Approach your thoughts and feelings with a softness, a kindness, and you will begin to feel less agitated and be more at ease. The second kindness is to all living beings. Once there is that feeling of ease within you, there is no other way than to be kind, not only doing “acts of kindness but being kind. Rather than reacting abruptly to something that comes up causing the other person to be on guard and in defensive mode, think first about trying to work it out in a kind way. The inner feelings of kindness that radiate outward create a harmony around each of us.
The Rockaway Times Think of it as an energy field. That ease has to come from within and during this time we really need to acknowledge and deal with our emotions, so we don’t display unkind behavior and create some “ugly energy. It’s all how we look at it. We seem to accomplish what we deem important on a daily basis, so if we deem important to refresh every day so that we can feel peace, then, we will radiate kindness. You can be certain that everyone will benefit. Center in, think positive, kind thoughts. Say positive, kind words. Do positive, kind deeds. And share all of that with the younger people also helping them to deal with what is coming up for them. “Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love. (Lao Tzu) May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is accompanied by a litany of proscribed behavior decreed by none other than our very own Mayor Bill De Blasio who has decreed that only residents of the communities surrounding the beaches should be allowed to use the beach and even then, simply as “just open space you can walk on....swimming, lifeguards, parties, barbecues and sports"
are strictly verboten! And if any of you are thinking about disregarding our Supreme Leaders behavioral edicts by cooling your toes in the surf, it's not the sand sharks you should be worried about but rather our mayor’s trite threat to use his unspecified underlings to ensure that "anyone who tries to get in the water will be taken out right away!" Since there will be no lifeguards present at the beach, I am left to wonder just who will be tasked with running into the surf to capture and forcibly return all you ankle surfers to dry land. I don't think our local constabulary will be too eager to enforce Mayor Bill's dictum in this matter especially after the way De Blasio's own Health Commissioner, Dr. Oxisis Barbot, responded to a recent request by the NYPD for additional face masks for their police officers when she not only refused the request but added "I don't give two rats asses about your cops."
I find myself yearning for those days in the not-so-distant past when Mayor Bill was continually out of the city spouting his platitudinous fluff to those few poor souls who actually chose to listen to him out west during his quixotic crusade to attain the Democratic presidential nomination. In any event, I guess we will all just have to wait and see how this all works out next week but if the weather is sunny and warm, it should prove very interesting. So, if you are not an "end the lock down" activist, what is one to do? It was recommended to me by a neighbor who has not ventured from her house since Ground Hog Day back in February, that perhaps I should simply abide by the rules, keep my geriatric butt at home, perhaps BBQ some hot dogs and stay in touch with family and friends via Skype or Zoom. She then added that if I do use Skype or Zoom, I should be aware of the Michigan University Press Release warning that the expand-
ed use of virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Skype has created “a ripe setting for unconscious bias and microaggressions. This includes setting your background to an image of your wedding. Unconscious bias includes using language, symbolism and nonverbal cues that reinforce normative social identities with respect to gender, race, sexual preference and socioeconomic status...For example, when the virtual background of a Zoom meeting attendee has pictures of his or her wedding, it unintentionally reinforces the idea that marriage is most fitting between opposite sexes.” Are you kidding me? Now if I use Zoom to reach out to someone I now have to worry about the P.C. police coming after me? On second thought I think I'll simply head to the beach and annoy the hell out of our mayor! Stay safe. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Getting ‘Reacquainted’ With Matt Kiss By Katie McFadden
Matt Kiss says it’s “Somebody Else’s Problem,” but for listeners, it’s a treat to the ears. The local musician is set to debut his next single on Friday, May 22, giving music fans a small taste of what’s to come when he releases a full EP, “Reacquainted” this summer. Longtime Rockaway resident Matt Kiss has graced the stages of Thai Rock to Rockstock. Since his debut EP of “Black Hound Sessions” in 2012, fans have experience Kiss’ pop sound with influences of blues, funk and rock and roll. When The Rockaway Times interviewed Kiss back in 2015, he was gearing up to release a full album. However, the project was never released. “I recorded an album’s worth of music and it just felt like it didn’t translate as well as I wanted it to,” he said. Instead, it set him on a journey of musical self-discovery. “After that project in 2016, I basically had to reassess a lot of stuff and go back to the drawing board,” he said. “I found different collaborators and a producer and left what happened behind so I could move forward, and I’m really happy with how this stuff came out.” The new material will be on an EP that Kiss plans to release this summer, and it will have a different sound from when he first began. “The new EP has more like a pop/ soul/ R&B flavor to it, but it's really more of me finding my voice,” he said. Kiss’ fans got a taste of the new music when he released the first new single, “Hurricane” back in January. The song addresses going through an internal storm and coping with things like anxiety. “It’s something that people can relate to when they’re going through something and they feel like they’re spiraling out of control, like a butterfly in a hurricane,” Kiss said. The song served as a slice of Kiss’ new sound. “I wanted to give a teaser to remind people that I’m back putting out music and this is the kind of flavor you can expect from it,” he said. The next sample will be out on Friday and it’s a breakup jam that anyone with a frustrating
ex-lover, will appreciate. “Somebody Else’s Problem is definitely the most f***” you song on the record. The rest of the EP doesn’t deal with it as much, but it was one of my favorite songs to write,” Kiss said. Finding inspiration through other breakup songs like Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me a River,” Kiss started writing the song after reflecting on some of his own past relationships and what resulted was a new tune written in just two nights. “I always felt there’s no better way to tell someone off than ‘you’re not my problem anymore.’ I thought that was a cool concept,” he said. With a strong message but a smooth melody, “Somebody Else’s Problem” is easily one of those songs that

someone will find themselves playing on a loop, and many will relate to. The song will be available on most digital music services on Friday, May 22, including iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon and YouTube. With the song wrapped up and ready to be released, Kiss is looking at what’s ahead. His new EP “Reacquainted” will let music fans get to know the full new sound of Matt Kiss. With heartfelt lyrics and melodies to groove to, Kiss says he’s excited for fans to hear more. Working with producer Malcolm Fong and collaborating with fellow musicians such as Amos Ang, much of the music was recorded in a Bay Ridge apartment. “We worked really well together,” Kiss said.
Kiss expects the EP to be released in early June, but in the age of coronavirus, anything can change, as Kiss has learned through the process. He says the EP was already supposed to be released, but when stay-athome orders went into effect in March, most plans got pushed back. It has also pushed back production on a music video for “Somebody Else’s Problem.” However, the time on pause has given him more time to write even more new music. “I hope to come out of this pandemic with another EP’s worth of material that once things open back up, I can just jump right back into the studio with and record,” he said. The coronavirus pause has also given him the opportunity to spend time at home as a new dad to a now nine-month old son. However, like a new baby, Kiss can no longer wait to introduce his latest music to the world. “I really just want people to hear this,” he said. He hopes to give people something to enjoy, even if it may be a while before he can get back to live performances. And he hopes that fans are ready to get “Reacquainted” with the new Matt Kiss. “I’m excited to release it. I’m also a little bit nervous. I hope people enjoy it and receive it well. There is always a little bit of nerves behind a release, but I’m excited.” For updates on new releases, videos and more, make sure to follow Matt Kiss on Facebook or Instagram (MattKissMusic). LET’S GO SHOPPING – 1920 By Katie Lucev
This is just one view of the many retail stores that existed a hundred years ago in Far Rockaway. Honorable mentions, on the left (ground level) is F. W. Woolworth 5 & 10 Cent Store. The second level is Remsen B. Decker, Men, Women, Child Apparel Clothing. Left towards the center is F. Susset Shoes, then Liberty Candy Soda Shop, United Cigars. Center/Right is the Mott Avenue Train Station (LIRR). Further right behind the lamp post is the old Far Rockaway Bank building. Many Rockaway businesses survived the depressions, recessions, wars and pandemics. As a young kid (1960s - 1970s) my favorite stores in Far Rock to shop were Bert’s, Thriftway Drugs, Walbaum’s, and Buster Brown Shoes. Lunch was always at Gino’s Pizzeria!

Charles L. Jacobi was a Mechanic in the U.S. Army in WWI. Born 9/9/1896 in Rockaway, he lived at 6 Schmeelk Avenue (later Beach 88th Street) in 1900, then 244 Lincoln Avenue (Beach 124th Street) in 1910 with parents Charles and Emma, and siblings Mory, Frances, and Minnie. A younger brother, George, had died at six months old. His father was a boat builder and had been a fireman during part of the family’s time in Rockaway. The family later moved upstate to Sidney and Charles enlisted in the NY National Guard and served in Company F of the 1st New York Infantry. He was later assigned to the Army’s Company F of the 107th Infantry and went overseas in May of 1918. He was promoted to mechanic and fought along the Hindenberg Line and at Mt. Kemmel. Jacobi was killed in action 5/10/1918 at Bony-Sur-Loire in France. He is buried at the Somme American Cemetery in Bony, France. Latest Williams Pipeline Proposal Defeated The pipeline has been stopped. On Friday, May 15, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that they have denied the required Clean Water Act Section 401 Water Quality Certification for the proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project. The planned natural gas pipeline would have traveled through New Jersey, under the New York-New Jersey Harbor, and connect to existing infrastructure off Rockaway. In its response to Williams’ latest proposal, the DEC said it “has determined construction of the NESE pipeline project would not meet New York State's rigorous water quality standards. Construction of the proposed project would result in significant water quality impacts resulting from the re-suspension of sediments and other contaminants, including mercury and copper, and would
disturb sensitive habitats, including shellfish beds and other bottom-dwelling marine life, clearly demonstrating that a default mixing zone is not appropriate for this project. New York is not prepared to sacrifice the State's water quality for a project that is not only environmentally harmful but also unnecessary to meet New York's energy needs.” With this announcement, Williams, cannot reapply for this permit for this project. This announcement comes after many years of strong activism from grassroots based environmental
REMEMBERING THE FALLEN Joseph "Joey" DePietro was a Private in the U.S. Army in Korea and lived for a time at 810 Church Road in Broad Channel (he is also listed on the memorial there) and also in Brooklyn. He was born 8/3/1932. DePietro was assigned to H Company, 2nd Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, of the 2nd Infantry Division. On 10/10/1951, he was helping a wounded comrade near hill #905 near Sang Gon Bae in Korea when he was killed by mortar fire. DePietro is buried at Cypress Hills Cemetery. He left behind parents Frank and Lillian, and brother Frank. See the “Rockaway Beach, NY Doughboy and Doughgirl Memorials” Facebook page for more local veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
groups which held several protests, made petitions and several pleas to Governor Andrew Cuomo to deny the project. Among some of the protestors were Rockaway residents. In response to the denial, JK Canepa of Sane Energy Project, one of the many organizations that fought back against the project said, “Thank you, Rockaways! We did it! And a big part of that was from your community power.” State Senator Joseph Addabbo, who has strongly opposed the pipeline project released a statement after the denial. “I

believe the state’s denial of the Williams Pipeline is consistent with its previous concerns regarding the project and is a great victory for our environment. I have joined many opponents of the pipeline, such as my constituents in Rockaway, in highlighting the unwarranted need for this costly Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project, better known as the Williams Pipeline, since it was announced. Now, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has denied the project because it would not meet our state’s water quality standards. I would like to thank all of the advocates and volunteers who came together to protect our environment from a project that would be obsolete in the near future, as we are innovating new ways of providing clean energy for the New York.”

ANGELS DELIVER TO SENIORS AND DISABLED By Assembly District Leader Lew M. Simon
Due to the pandemic, there was a desperate need to assist seniors and the disabled with food and groceries. Assembly District Leader Lew M. Simon and Jeanette M. Garramone, candidate for Democratic District Leader in the 23 A.D. Part B, came up with the idea of delivering grab and go lunches
and breakfasts from P.S. 183 to those unable to shop for themselves. Jeanette and Lew advocated with the Superintendent of District 27, the Deputy Superintendent, the Chancellor and the Division of School Lunches to provide the food service at P.S. 317 on Beach 110th Street as well. Prior to this we came up with the idea of getting groceries donated. Jeanette has a good
heart and cooked for people who don't have food. We reached St. Camillus and St. Francis de Sales parishes. Aged and disabled persons living between Beach 90th Street and Beach 149th Street may call (718) 945-1216 for food assistance. If you can contribute food or help delivering food, please let us know. We thank Queens Borough President Sharon Lee for as-
sisting us in getting food from Fresh Direct. God bless Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer of St. Camillus Church. Thank you to Frank Bassette, Jimmy Smallman, Chris Cruz, Sharon Fein-Feldman, Andy Feldman, Maryann Nellon, Police Officers Cruz and Haber, Heather, Anthony Robinson and Janice Smith. Jeanette M. Garramone coordinated our efforts.
