On August 2, 2018, Ray Wasson had just finished a bagpipe performance with the Breezy Point Catholic Club Pipes & Drums Band at the Brooklyn Cyclone's stadium, MCU Park, as part of the baseball team’s annual Irish night. It was an event he played for many years, but this one ended in what could have been a tragedy if it were not for some quick-acting good Samaritans and FDNY paramedics. After the performance, Wasson, 50, was walking up a flight of stairs at the stadium when he collapsed to the ground. Fortunately, three bystanders were in the right place at the right time. Registered Nurses Kelly Ryman O’Malley and Stephanie Donnellan, and Paramedic Robert Lederman from Maimonides Medical Center raced to Wasson’s side. According to the FDNY, they
began CPR, administered one shock from a defibrillator, and called 911 for help. FDNY members quickly responded. Paramedics Marvin Zuniga and Anthony Marascia, EMTs Carlos Olivera and Joshua Haber, and Lt. Scott Rothchild of Station 43 arrived to find Mr. Wasson in cardiac arrest. They continued CPR, and during the next pulse check, he was found to have a good strong pulse. The paramedics established an IV and continued to provide ventilations to Wasson during transport to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn. When he arrived at the hospital, Wasson was conscious and alert, with no recollection of the incredible life-saving work that had just taken place. “I woke up in the ambulance and I was so confused. I couldn’t believe something like that happened to me. I want to thank the members that helped me that day. It’s very overwhelming. I feel like everything is different now. I don’t sweat the small stuff. Basically every day is a win for me because it is a miracle that I am alive,” Wasson said. On Tuesday, May 21, Wasson got to thank his rescuers personally for his second chance at life at the 25th Annual Second Chance Ceremony in Brooklyn. The annual coincides with National EMS Week. Wasson joined eight other cardiac arrest patients who also got to meet their saviors.

BOYLEING POINTS
Our Town This column’s a lot easier when someone else writes it for me. Think I’m bad for skipping a week or several? My brother’s got the right idea, he writes every fifteen or twenty years. This is a reprint of a letter we just found. You don’t have to know the names of the people he mentions. If you love Rockaway, you’ll get it. And who knows, your tear ducts might get a work out. This is a love letter to a small town between the green ocean and the tranquil bay and is filled with everyday saints who don’t know they’re holy and would laugh if you told them they were. Peggy, my darling wife and life partner, died of leukemia on January 24 at the cruelly obscene age of 42, just four short years after we moved to Rockaway. We had met as kids in Brooklyn, bought our first house there and saw our kids born there, but, after a while we had outgrown our first small house and were looking for a place to move. My brother, Kevin, already lived in Rockaway and told us what a wonderful place it was. It was the best piece of reporting he had ever done. He mentioned the magnificent beaches, of course, but he also said the best thing about Rockaway was the people. It was this great small town where everyone watched out for each other, he said. We bought an old house, began to slowly renovate it (the
women on our block still haven’t forgiven me for letting Peggy haul rubble to a dumpster on Mother’s Day) and I learned he was right as we fell into the social, religious, and athletic life of Rockaway. Small towns are supposed to be at their best in a crisis, and we found out how really rare and beautiful the people of Rockaway are after our world turned upside down last April. I want to thank every person who touched me on the elbow to ask how things were; who helped my kids in a thousand ways; who just made us feel like we weren’t alone. If I don’t mention you by name, it’s not that I’ve forgotten you—every little generous gesture is burned into my mind—it’s just that there are simply too many decent, stand-up people in this small town to mention by name. Saints in the Rockaway version come with self-mocking humor and they’ll probably kill me for using that word in connection with them, but saintliness comes in all forms and if it means generosity and charity, it’s more common in Rockaway than sand. Juliette Geary and Marian Dunn adopted us and performed so many acts of mercy and tenderness that I will never be able to repay them. Marie Rudolph, the first person to welcome us to Rockaway, was there as a rock solid friend to Peggy when she needed it most. Carol Werner made so many dinners for us, her husband, Harry, started com-
ing to our house looking for a square meal. Thank you, too, Linda Spadaro, for getting my daughter home for those meals. Our block is a small town within a small town and the Jacksons, the Militanos, the Martens, the McDades, the Woods, and all our neighbors gave us support and friendliness we’ll never forget. I’m about to blow the covers of two would-be curmudgeons, who like people to think they’re crusty, but sorry, fellas—like it or not—I know you’re nice guys and everyone else should, too. Thank you, Jack Meade and Bernie Heeran—and you know why. To all The Graybeards, especially Steve Stathis, who showed why Greeks are the best cooks; and Kevin Kelleher, who gave a gift that carried Peggy through her loneliest hours; thanks all you guys for your wise-cracking friendship. To all my St. Francis ballplayers who showed me such support, especially Ray Corri-
Page 5 gan and Yogi Barra. I’m ready to take on any team with you guys. St. Francis' Monsignor Geraghty showed a steadfastness and humanity that went well beyond normal pastoral obligation, for which I’ll always be grateful. Finally, my mom, transplanted to Rockaway herself, was as heroic and loving as always. In the midst of all this generosity the world turned as it does, joy mingled with pain, and the day before Peggy was buried, my newborn nephew, Sean, who had been in intensive care, was released to his home in Rockaway. Welcome to a wonderful town, kid. With love and gratitude, BRIAN BOYLE

The buyers’ group is led by Mark Caller, the same developer putting up condos on Beach 116th and who bought the old theater across the street. The Community House Bar/ Restaurant will remain open. In fact, we hear there will be a Stella Maris Class of ’77 party there in September. ***** Time flies. Riis Beach Bazaar with its many vendors at Bay 9 and the bathhouse returns for it fifth summer. After years of neglect, Riis sure has come a long way. In fact, it’s recently been a venue for a wedding (the courtyard behind the bathhouse). Very cool. ***** This weekend will welcome some new additions to the peninsula. Nick’s Italian Ices

The center is located at 1069 Dickens Street with registration open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ***** A new ferry shuttle has launched from Far Rockaway.
The free bus is a pilot program that will run for three months, Monday through Friday. One stop is at Beach 21st Street at Mott and Cornaga and the other is on Seagirt Boulevard between Beach 20th Street and Crest Avenue. It’s about a 30-minute trip to the ferry dock at Beach 108th Street. ***** Keep an eye out for our TOP 30 photos from The Rockaway Times Photo Contest on the boardwalk, ferry dock, Broad Channel and Riis Park. The poster-sized photos truly beautify the area. And maybe your photo is an Honorable Mention and will be on display as well. All told, there will be 40 photos and posters with last year’s winner by Don Riepe. Keeping Memorial Circle’s Memory Alive By Katie McFadden
On Memorial Day, 72 years ago, a group of women dedicated a park with 33 trees, each representing a man from Rockaway who made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their life during World War II. The women, who were wives, mothers, aunts, cousins, neighbors and friends of the young men, were determined to keep their memory alive, by creating a place to bring solace and comfort to their families— Memorial Circle. Today, a group of neighbors have made it their mission to maintain this place of peace, which would not be possible without the contributions of others. Many may know that Beach 116th’s bayside Tribute Park as a place dedicated to those who lost their lives on September 11. With more than 70 lost from the local community alone, it serves as a reminder that Rockaway is a place that’s been touched by great loss. Today, the park is a place for people to reflect
on those events and remember those who died. But way before Tribute Park, came another place for people to reflect and remember another big loss. As people drive along Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Rockaway Park, they pass a circular park, complete with several trees, benches and plaques that bear the names of the local men who died in WWII. In 1947, two years after the war ended, the ladies of the Belle Harbor Garden Club created that park in memory of those men. On May 30, 1947, the women dedicated the park in a ceremony that included decorating the trees with floral tributes, a prayer, a reading of the names of the servicemembers who gave their lives, and a playing of taps. Today, a similar ceremony is held every Memorial Day at Memorial Circle, also known as Veterans’ Circle. Many who pass Memorial Circle each day may notice how well maintained it is. For several years, the women of the Belle Harbor Garden Club, with the
help of the Jewish War Veterans, maintained this place of solace. However, as they grew older and passed on, the park started to go into disarray. That was until a new generation of neighbors stepped up to the plate. “The first time we worked on Memorial Circle in 1991, it looked terrible. It had become so overgrown that people didn’t realize there were pathways there and there was dog crap all over the
place. We got a lot of volunteers and everyone brought out their own lawnmowers and worked on it all day long,” Maureen Walsh, one of the members of Friends of Memorial Circle said. “It’s hard to believe how bad it was because it looks so pristine today. But we had a lot of people from the community come and help.” Continued on page 9

KEEPING MEMORIAL CIRCLE’S
Page 9
Continued from Page 8
Around 2004, the Friends of Memorial Circle entered into an official partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation, which owns the land, giving the group authority to maintain it. While Parks helps with things like providing flowers and replacing damaged flags, the Friends of Memorial Circle handle the general maintenance, which they have down to a science. After partnering with Parks, the group had a sprinkler system installed instead of having neighbors come by with buckets or local fire departments come help out with watering. They also hired a gardener which takes care of the landscaping. The group also pays for things like ribbons and flags to help decorate the park around Memorial Day for the annual ceremony. Besides replacing the plantings each year and maintaining the park, few things have changed at the park over the
years. The park remains dedicated to WWII servicemembers who died, but a few names have been added since 1947 to include other local veterans. They include U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Michael Glover, who was killed in Iraq in 2006, and U.S. Army 1st Class Private, John McGonigal, who died in Vietnam in 1968. And on this Memorial Day, another name will be added to recognize a local that was killed on the SS Dorchester, which sank in 1943, during WWII. Sometime after Hurricane Sandy, Friends of Memorial Circle became a 501c3 organization, which helps them ap-
ply for grants rather than going through the Jewish War Veterans, however in recent years, grants have started to dry up, while the need to maintain the park continues. As the park has always been made possible by a group of local residents, the Friends of Memorial Circle are hoping that the neighborhood will once again come through and help support their efforts to keep Memorial Circle in pristine condition. Back in the 1960s, records show that the Belle Harbor Garden Club paid less than $50 a year to maintain the park. But times have changed. Between the landscaping and gardening, maintenance of the sprinkler system, which some-

times needs repairs, and other small expenses for the Memorial Day ceremony, the Friends of Memorial Circle pays anywhere from $3,500 to $4,000 yearly to maintain the park. To help with the costs, the group is hoping for some monetary help from the community. “We appreciate however small a donation,” Mike Honan, another Friend of Memorial Circle member, said. “Contributions have been coming in and we appreciate and value every penny. It’s put to good use. It all goes to that and only that.” If you’d like to make a donation, all checks can be made out to Friends of Memorial Circle, and can be mailed to Friends of Memorial Circle, PO Box # 940174, Rockaway Park Post Office, Rockaway Park, NY 11694. The Friends of Memorial Circle say that they’ll always keep this memorial alive. “We’ll continue doing this no matter what,” Fran Honan, another Friend of Memorial Circle member said. “This is the kind of thing you do for those who gave all.”

Rockaway Memorial Day Parade on Monday
While we celebrate with the beach, concession crawls and barbecues on this unofficial start to summer, let’s not forget the true meaning of this three-day weekend. Memorial Day is Monday, May 27 and in true Rockaway fashion, locals will recognize those who made the supreme sacrifice for this country. On Monday, May 27, the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272 Memorial Day Parade will take place in Rockaway. The event will start with a memorial Mass at St. Francis de Sales on Beach 129th Street at 10:30 a.m. Following the service, there will be a ceremony at the Four Chaplains monument outside of the church. The parade will then head down Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Beach 121st Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. All veterans,
whether a member or not of the American Legion or any other veteran organization, are invited to march. And all residents are encouraged to line the streets and show their support. For the first time, the parade will end at Memorial Circle. However, half an hour later, all are welcome to attend the concluding ceremony at the Doughboy and Doughgirl monuments on Beach 94th Street. The Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street) will host an event with refreshments and hot dogs.

Tree Be Gone Dear Editor: (In response to Enrico Luisi’s letter regarding the Beach 116th Christmas tree) I paid $150 out of my pocket to have the Christmas tree properly disposed of by a local tree removal company last Thursday, May 11 after making numerous phone calls to Parks Department, who did not return any calls (shocking). I hope that is a sufficient response to answer to the question WHY IS IT STILL UP??? I guess no one noticed before this letter was published on May 16? As the saying goes, “No good deed goes unpunished.” As far as a response to “WISE UP!!!", you bet I will for next year. I guess we should all be

Eight-Year-Old Baking Tycoon Whips Up His Special Purpose By Kami-Leigh Agard
At just eight years old, local baking whiz-kid, Connor Rodriguez, debuted his sweet prowess in the kitchen with Connor’s Cupcakes this past April, and is already the talk of the town. However, what is even more amazing about the little renaissance man is that he has Down syndrome, and after four surgeries and a host of developmental delays—he has proven that like his idol, Hell’s Kitchen’s Chef Gordon Ramsay—“I am what I am. A fighter.” When Connor’s mom, Marian Tinnelly-Rodriguez, was pregnant, she and her husband, Fred, decided not to take the screening test for Down syndrome. This test usually performed during the first trimester of pregnancy, is when a needle guided by ultrasound, is inserted through the mother's abdomen to take a sample of cells from the placenta. The cells are tested for missing, extra or abnormal chromosomes, and determine a chance for a Down syndrome diagnosis. However, Connor’s dad, Fred, said, “We just weren’t interested in taking the test, not just because of the risks associated with the procedure, but also because we knew we were going to love our baby anyway.” Connor was born on June 13, 2010, and immediately the medical team realized that he had Down syndrome and began running a series of tests. During the heart test, they discovered that Connor has a tracheoesophageal fistula (TE fistula), a birth defect in which there is an abnormal connection in one or more places between the esophagus and the trachea. When a baby with a TE fistula swallows, the liquid can pass through the abnormal connection between the esophagus and the trachea and get into the baby's lungs. So on day two of his life, Connor had his first surgery, and was in the intensive care unit for two weeks.
Tinnelly-Rodriguez shared, “When he was born, finding out that he had Down syndrome was definitely a shock. All my family in Ireland were expectantly waiting to hear the good news. I called my sister and told her that I felt so sad that my baby was starting life on a negative note. I’ll never forget her response: ‘God gives special children to special people.’ Besides being in absolute agony because I had a cesarean, I was dealing with the news of Connor’s diagnosis, but my sister’s words gave me strength.” According to the family, one of the most frustrating hurdles they faced was the lack of information and optimism from the hospital’s staff. “Rodriguez-Tinnelly said, “The hospital gave no information. All they gave us was a book that was outdated. I remember sitting with the social worker, and her saying, ‘You can always try again. He’s never going to be able to do much with his life.’ She made it a point to tell us that he won’t be able to go to college, will never have his own bank account. She was so negative. In her eyes, it was like Connor did not matter. That really lit the fire for us. In my head, I was thinking, ‘You’re talking to the wrong people here.’” Rodriguez said, “When we heard that, it gave us even more fuel to want to fight for him even more. We wanted Connor to prove these naysayers wrong by having the best life ever.” After two weeks in ICU and he was finally home, the determined husband and wife duo

got on the ball pretty quickly with NYC’s Early Intervention (EI), a program that provides services for infants and toddlers with disabilities. Rodriguez said, “Thank God for the therapists we met in EI. They gave a lot of information. We kicked down doors left and right to get him everything that would help him. Unfortunately for special-needs families, it’s a battle because information is not readily provided. You really have to explore every avenue and talk to people, who could refer you to great programs.” Connor’s mom added, “A very big part of it is Connor was always such a happy baby, and our families completely embraced him, which gave us loads of strength. We worked 24/7 to make sure that he got the right professional help as early as possible, so he would have the best chance at being able to do all the things that kids his age could do.” Four surgeries later, today, Connor is a happy and healthy third-grader attending the Tiegerman Elementary School (formerly known as the School for Language and Communication Development). He is a world-class traveler, and is already on his second passport with most of his stamps being from Ireland. He also loves playing soccer, swimming, horseback riding and of course, what he’s most popularly known for—baking! How the little baking tycoon launched his own business is nothing short of amazing. According to Rodriguez, Connor has always had a passion for cooking. “He had his own play kitchen and would ‘pretend’ cooking concoctions like chocolate soup or banana soup. You name it, he would whip it up for us. Then he got into watching cooking shows. One of his idols is Chef Gordon Ramsay from Hell’s Kitchen. He would sit riveted, staring at the screen, and asking questions, so early on, we realized that cooking is his passion.”
Then soon Connor took over his mom’s kitchen. “He started helping me bake banana bread. He would get up on his little step stool, and mix flour and the other ingredients. Soon, he was in charge and I became the sous-chef,” Tinnelly-Rodriguez laughed. However, Connor’s parents saw his passion for baking as an opportunity for him to start building on his future. “We worry about when we’re not around, and he’s older, what will become of him? So launching Connor’s Cupcakes was a way to start him on the right foot, where he gets to perfect a craft that could not just provide an income, but give him independence. So Connor’s Cupcakes was born. When we bought him his chef ’s outfit, he never looked so proud and of course, happy,” Rodriguez said. Connor’s Cupcakes became an instant hit. “We started getting hefty orders from locals to the FDNY, schools and organizations. We just did an order for a whopping 200 cupcakes for his school!” Rodriguez said. Connor has been such as inspiration to his family that they even started their own nonprofit, Connor’s Place. “With Connor’s Place, we get the opportunity to help other special-needs parents, who are in the same dark place we were. Our aim is to provide a resource, where parents can access vital information to help their children. We have so much information from the years that have gone by that we want to share with parents on a similar journey. “We want parents to know that a special-needs diagnosis doesn’t put a value on your child’s worth nor what he/ she can contribute to society,” Rodriguez said. To order Connor’s Cupcakes, visit connorscupcakes.com or call 877-347-4662, and to find out more info about Connor’s Place, visit: connorsplace.org

Tap It Out with #Taplife on National Tap Dance Day
By Katie McFadden
Did you know that May 25 is National Tap Dance Day? On November 8, 1989, the 101st U.S. Congress officially signed a law to declare May 25, the birthday of famous tap dancer, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, a federal holiday. And this Saturday, May 25, the #Taplife Company is bringing the celebration to the boardwalk with a special event featuring tap dance performances and an acoustic concert by Queens musician, Frank Persico. Professional tap dancer and teacher, Anthony Lo Cascio of Howard Beach, has got rhythm, and plenty of it. He’s spent a lifetime shuffling, heel stepping and ball changing on stages across the world. So it’s only right that he shares his gift by inspiring others to step up and let their inner tap dancer loose. Lo Cascio says he began dancing at age nine, where he found a home at Joe Stanford’s studio in Howard Beach. With a male teacher at the helm, Lo Cascio learned that dance wasn’t just for the girls. Stanford took him under his wing and taught him all he needed to know about tap and led him to the stage at Beach Channel High School, where the dance company would perform their annual recitals. From there, Lo Cascio took what he learned and put it to good use. He spent some time teaching at Steps Ahead Dance Studio. And in 1994, he auditioned for a show in Monte Carlo and spent that summer tapping as part of the opening acts for big stars such as Earth Wind and Fire, Natalie Cole and Stevie Wonder, where Lo Cascio learned that tap was more than just a dance, but a language. “Dance is a universal language. Tap takes it further because tap has sound. When I opened for Stevie Won-
der, I got to meet him and I told him I was a tap dancer. He told me that tap is his favorite kind of dance, because it’s the only kind of dance he can see,” Lo Cascio recalled. For years to come, Lo Cascio would go on to let the world hear and see what his feet could do. He got his big break when he auditioned for Tap Dogs, a famous touring tap dance show that got its start in Australia. “They came to America to tour and landed in New York City and they needed new performers. I auditioned with about 700 other dancers and I didn’t get it right away, but they came back a few months later and I got the job immediately. I was the first American to get a standing role in Tap Dogs and I took over for an original cast member. I toured on and off with them for 17 years and it gave me a lot of popularity in the dance and tap dance community. I’ve been to hundreds of dance studios all over the country, performed in all 50 states, been to seven countries, eight if you count Texas, I got to be on TV and radio shows and I got to be famous in the dance world,” Lo Cascio said. He also spent about 17 years living in California until Hurricane Sandy brought him back to Queens so he could help his family get back on their feet. Shortly after Sandy, in 2013, Lo Cascio’s #Taplife Company was born. Three years after that, #Taplife became an educational experience and the company started teaching kids across the northeast how to tap dance. Locally, Lo Cascio teaches classes at Mrs. Elaine’s studio in Rockaway, a studio in New Jersey called Dancer’s Edge and at a studio in Long Island. However #Taplife expands far beyond the Continued on page 15

NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY
Continued from Page 14 local area. Saturday’s National Tap Dance Day performance in Rockaway will feature dancers from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and even as far as Mexico, all on one stage on Beach 94th Street. It was during Lo Cascio’s return to Queens following Hurricane Sandy that he reconnected with Ozone Park resident, Frank Persico, who he had attended Fiorello Laguardia High School with back in the day. Persico had written a song called, “Lucky to Be Alive,” which inspired Lo Cascio to choreograph a new dance. Together they collaborated and filmed a video for the song, which Lo Cascio is featured dancing on the Rockaway boardwalk and on the Joe Addabbo bridge, and it became a choreography that the #Taplife Company and others would learn across the country.
Saturday’s performance will bring Lo Cascio, the #Taplife Company and Persico together again to a place that was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy. “I think the boardwalk is a really nice venue and for any place that was devastated the way it was, to survive and come back stronger, is amazing. When you say Rockaway, many people know what it is. How do you not do it here? It felt right. National Tap Dance Day is a National Holiday and it’s right at the beginning of the summer season and all of these just came together and it makes sense,” Lo Cascio said, adding that it’s also a tribute to his tap dance beginnings, performing in recitals at Beach Channel High School. The National Tap Dance Day Performance will take place on the boardwalk at Beach 94th Street, starting at noon. It will feature performances by the #Taplife Company, in between live acoustic performances by Frank Persico, plus a special collaboration of tap along with Persico’s song, “Lucky to Be Alive.” Lo Cascio also hopes

others will join in on the fun by participating in some dances like the Shim Sham. “Bring your tap shoes. If you know the Shim Sham, you don’t even need your tap shoes, just come dance with us,” he said. Lo Cascio hopes Saturday’s performance will give people a whole new perspective of tap dance. “When I was a kid, I was bullied a lot, and I got through that because of dance. Kids didn’t understand it, but now I’m bringing home something that I’m famous for and putting it on blast so that everyone can enjoy it and see that it’s fun. It’s
something that brings people together, not pushes them apart. Tap dance is like Morse code for the soul,” Lo Cascio said. To embrace the message of tap, head to Beach 94th and enjoy this family-friendly, community event on Saturday, May 25 at 12 p.m. And join the dancers after at Bungalow Bar, which is a sponsor of the event. Beach 120th Mystery Property Raises Alarms By Katie McFadden
There’s an air of mystery surrounding a property at 174 Beach 120th Street. Once the subject of a scam involving one resident forging documents to take over the home of a deceased woman, the home is now raising alarm again as neighbors speculate it could be the site of a future homeless shelter. But the owner claims that’s not the case. Recently, the doors of the long boarded up home at 174 Beach 120th, have been open, with people going in and out, leading to curiosity among neighbors. After all, the home has an intriguing history. In February 2017, journalist Katie Honan shed some light on a scam involving the home and one next to it in a DNAInfo article. The Department of Investigation began looking into Donata Rea after she registered her friend, Mary Karen Connors’ homes for the Build it Back program and received up to $60,000 to repair the homes. However, that move would unveil
a bigger scheme at hand, as Connors died on November 18, 2011. She had no next of kin. Two years after Connors died, Rea allegedly transferred the properties to herself by forging several power of attorney documents. According to charges, Rea rented out one of the homes and made more than $50,000 in rent before selling it for $800,000. Rea was later arrested and the case went to court. Rea wound up with a plea deal, receiving five years of probation and paying $70,000 restitution
for the scam. As for the homes? They went up for public auction in March 2017. A local purchased the home located at 178 Beach 120th Street, and 174 Beach 120th Street was sold to Mimi Fuhrman, a Manhattan resident and a Senior Lease Negotiator for the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services, for $505,000 in the summer of 2017. Neighbors say Fuhrman introduced herself early on, but little had been taking place at the property, until recently, when a
man with a yellow Hummer was spotted going in and out of the home. Fran McCabe, who lives directly across the street from the home, started asking questions and the alleged responses she received raised some alarms. “He was here last Sunday, so I asked him what he’s doing, and he said, ‘you’re going to be very happy because I’m trying to help veterans. I’m putting in an 11bed veterans’ residence because I’ve always wanted to help veterans since I was unable to serve,’” McCabe claims. Then she pushed further. “He told me about how he’s going to carefully vet each one and they will be the cream of the crop and it will be quiet and safe because everyone will be in uniform. He said in order to live there, you need to be working, and they can’t come in during the day, they can only come back at night, and if they’re not working, he’s going to get them jobs as auxiliary policemen. He also said he’s going to give them Continued on page 18
On Monday, May 27, 2019 The American Legion Daniel M. O'Connell Post # 272 will host its 100th Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains monument outside the church. The parade will proceed to 121VW Street for a ceremony at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will disassemble and restage to the Doughboy and Doughgirl monuments one half hour later at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94th Street for a concluding ceremony. After, we will retire to the Knights of &olumbus on Beach 90th Street for refreshments and hotdogs. All Veterans, whether a member or not of the American Legion or any other Veteran organization, are invited to march. Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrLIice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the "summer season" and many people are busy attending and their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who gave their all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout. I would like to give a special thanks to the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 21, and St. Francis 'e Sales for their support and participation in this parade. We cordially invite you to join us on this Day of Remembrance as we, for the 100th year in a row, honor our fallen comrades.

BEACH 120TH
Continued from Page 16 a stipend out of his pocket, McCabe claims. “I told him that this sounds like a shelter, and he said, ‘don’t call it that.’ McCabe says the man identified himself as Steven Kates, who allegedly called his project the American Veterans Residence. McCabe also expressed concern because a quick internet search of Kates’ contact information leads to multiple claims of scams involving Kates. Steven Kates’ name also appears on an application filed with the NYC Department of Buildings for the Beach 120th property, listing him as the owner, despite Fuhrman being named owner on the most recent sales records with the NYC Department of Finance. The application, filed on February 8, 2019, listed the job description as “RENOVATION OF EXISTING 3 STORY CLASS B-SRO. FIRST FLOOR, 3 ROOMS, SECOND FLOOR, 4 ROOMS THIRD FLOOR 5 ROOMS. NEW BATHS & REPAIR SPRINKLER SYSTEM. NO CHANGE TO EGRESS, USE OR OCCUPANCY. The plan that
calls for renovating 12 rooms, was disapproved by the DOB on May 15, 2019. Kates did not respond to The Rockaway Times by press time, however, Fuhrman did. In a phone call to The Rockaway Times, Fuhrman outright denied the rumor that her property was becoming a homeless shelter and said she was confused by the recent interest in her property, as she hasn’t been working on it currently due to personal hardships in her life. “I’m kind of letting my architect work through this stuff, but it got back to me that someone said I was putting a shelter there and that cannot be further from the truth, she said. She explained further, saying, “I have two friends who were in homeless shelters in the past few years and both worked with me, and I always said to myself, if I ever found anything, I’d love to use it to help people, but not as a homeless shelter. There’s a big difference. I want to help people who need housing, but not a homeless shelter, she said. “My plan for this property has changed three times. It took
The Rockaway Times
me a long time to get the certificates and paperwork to even begin work. If I had known it was a two-year process, I don’t know if I would have done this. I thought I was selling it to somebody, but I wanted to have a place there for myself. At one point I wanted to do a bed and breakfast, but other people are involved now so it’s not completely up to me anymore. But one of my requirements is that I want to help working people who need help, especially after seeing my friends go through that. I can’t tell you that’s 100% what I’m doing. But I’m definitely not doing a homeless shelter. Fuhrman went on to say that she’s investing a lot of money into the property to improve it. The recently-disapproved application was submitted with an estimated cost of $319,500. “I wouldn’t be putting any money into it if it was going to be a shelter. The fact that I’m making it really nice should tell you something. My friend that was in a shelter makes a decent salary, but she couldn’t afford an apartment. She said she’d be paying almost all her
DOWNTOWN FAR ROCKAWAY PILOT SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE
money for rent, so she went into a shelter instead. Do I agree with what she did? No, but she finally got into some program where she’s living in a suite with an older woman and paying like $1,000 a month. Fuhrman explained that she hopes to offer something similar. “Everybody has to be working. It’s not just a freebie. They’d be paying rent. I have a bit of say and I get to approve anybody that goes in there. Nobody is going in there unless I interview them and say it’s okay. I’m going to try for the right people, people that look nice and are in similar situations to what my friends were in, people with a good job that are trying to make it better for themselves. I’m not going to put this much money into a building and have people destroy it. As an actual proposed shelter for Beach 101st Street moves forward, neighbors on Beach 120th say they’ll continue to have their guard up. “I don’t believe anybody anymore, McCabe said. “I’m almost at a point where I wish Donna Rea didn’t get caught because we don’t know what might happen here now.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need
Canadians say "sorry" so much that a law was passed in 2009 declaring that an apology cannot be used as evidence of admission to guilt. The only letters that do not appear on the periodic table are J and Q.
Calling "shotgun" when riding in a car comes from the term, "shotgun messenger," which was used to refer to the guard who sat next to the stagecoach driver. The guards would use a shotgun to keep robbers and criminals away. It made its way into society due to Hollywood's love of Western movies. Careful with Pseudoscience
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
The U.S. population is aging, and with it is an increasing prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease, which lacks effective approaches for prevention or a cure. Many people are concerned about their loved ones or they themselves developing dementia, and so they often independently seek out information and material about brain health interventions. Unfortunately, not all sources contain verified, high-quality medical information. As anyone who has accessed the internet for information knows, not all sites contain truthful or accurate information. In the landscape of limited treatments for dementia, wide access to information has brought about a troubling rise in what some experts have described as “pseudomedicine. This term refers to supplements and medical interventions that exist within the law and are promoted as scientifically supported treatments, but lack credible efficacy data.
Practitioners of pseudomedicine often appeal to health concerns, promote individual anecdotal testimony as proven fact, advocate for unproven therapies, and achieve financial gain. As it relates to Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, the most common example of pseudomedicine is the promotion of dietary supplements to improve cognition and brain health. This $3.2 billion industry promotes brain health benefits via high-penetration consumer advertising through print media, TV, radio, and the internet. Despite the fact that there is no known dietary supplement that prevents cognitive decline or dementia, these supplements are advertised as such and appear to gain legitimacy when sold by major U.S. retailers. Many consumers are unaware that dietary supplements are not subject to FDA testing for efficacy or safety. Indeed, some supplements may cause harm—Vitamin E, for example, which if taken in high doses, may cause brain hemorrhage and/or death.
The Alzheimer’s Association highlights these concerns and notes that many of these supplements are promoted by testimony rather than scientific research. One researcher, referring to scientific integrity, or a lack thereof, coined the term, “cargo cult science, to refer to these supplements and other methods of “prevention and treatment. Examples of cargo cult science include treatments for unsubstantiated causes of neurodegenerative diseases such as metal toxicity, mold exposure, and infectious diseases including Lyme disease. These causes and treatments are often promoted by licensed medical professionals. These “professionals offer treatments for dementia, usually not covered by medical insurance, including intravenous nutrition, personalized detoxification, chelation therapy, antibiotics, or stem cell therapy. These interventions lack a known mechanism for treating dementia and are costly, unregulated, and potentially harmful. Recently, other protocols to reverse cognitive decline have been
promoted, often by medical professionals with legitimate credentials. These protocols include cognitive training, exercise, a heart-healthy diet, and supplements. While seemingly supported by medical trials and research, a closer inspection of the data reveals poor-quality studies and sloppy research. An argument may be made that these interventions are not harmful and offer hope to those facing an incurable disease. However, these interventions are not ethically, medically, or financially benign for patients and families. If you or a family member are facing a diagnosis of dementia, it is important to discuss any and all treatments with your family practitioner or neurologist, who may guide you through the various treatment options. Remember that any legitimate treatment for a common disease would already be in widespread use and would be covered by health insurance if it were truly effective. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

LIGHTEN UP
As I sit and contemplate about my column this week, not feeling inspiration, not getting the thought that propels me into the journey of finding a message for this column, feeling tired and heavy from the week and life right now. All at once, the notion comes: “lighten up!” And I ask myself, why do I feel so heavy? Why? Why? Why? And that is the beauty. When we examine what is going on, and when it is heavy, the opposite presents itself and we can totally change our mindset and our heartset. Just by asking the
question why. The power of the mind and the heart saves us. Life is life. We get so many curve balls—some curvier than others—sometimes, it is like: what next? Other times, it is flow and bliss. We do have the power to “lighten up.” We can change our minds and turn our hearts toward lightness with the intention to do so. Physically, we can turn the corners of our mouths upward in a smile—even if it is a little one. We can search online for cute puppies or kittens or children, and laugh at their antics. Smiling and laughing
helps to uplift the spirit. We must remember when it is not so great that around the corner it could be. And that, somehow, can get us through—with laughter and a little help from our friends. Being present with a smile, kind words and laughter for someone else who is going through a hard time is in the moment, creating a memory which that person may remember when sinking down into the hard time. Having compassion for what someone is going through—trying to understand and put ourselves in her/his shoes—realizing that sometimes there is no quick way out and making the best of sharing something together is a recipe for lifting up. Making an effort to help someone else to lighten up is a gift to ourselves, more so than a gift for that person because it is in giving, that we receive the most precious gifts of satisfaction, love and inner peace. When something challenges you to have anxiety or sink down, take a moment to turn
Page 27 it upside down to calm and a degree of happiness. Within this realm, you have the power to change your mood. You have the power to change your actions. You have the power to change your words. As I say often enough in this column, “what we do, say, think, feel, becomes a part of us.” Take a moment to take a long deep breath in, filling out the belly, pause, and exhale, fully engaging the belly by pulling the navel towards the back of the spine. Feel your spine lift, your heart shine forward: “I am here.” May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

By Beth Hanning Beach Etiquette The forecast for this weekend currently looks absolutely spectacular and I know we all hope to get to the beach. However, I am a week late with my column as Monday’s high temperatures had many beachgoers who did not know the beach etiquette. Here is my annual beach etiquette guide and it is for all of our new residents and our visitors (which I am sure there will be a lot of due to the ferry and the shuttle and the anticipated high temperatures). Rule 1: When you get to the beach and there is a lot of
space, please do not sit directly on top of people already at the beach. I never understand why someone who has never seen me or met me before wants to sit so close to me? Don’t you want your own space as well? 1b: This also goes to setting up a huge crew directly in front of someone. Many times, the residents know that the tide will be coming in as the day goes on and you sitting directly in front of them is both blocking their view and now creates a problem when you have to move when the tide comes up the beach.
Rule 2: I love music. Our group often has a radio on the beach. However, when your music is so loud that the entire beach cannot even hear their conversation, that is rude. 2b: This noise rule also applies to vulgar language. Rockaway is a family-oriented beach, so please respect that families with children are surrounding you. Rule 3: Clean up after yourself. This was said in Robert Fulghum’s book, "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten." One of the things he listed 25 years ago was: clean up your own mess. This is not beach etiquette; it is etiquette in general. I walked the boardwalk Monday night and the boardwalk already had empty ketchup containers and ice cream wrappers. I understand that we do not have enough cans but make an effort to at least place your trash in a bag and bring it to the closest can. Rule 4: Dress appropriately. I saw a few people wearing what they thought were clothes
The Rockaway Times on the boardwalk Monday NIGHT. There is no reason to be at the concession stands at night with no clothes on. And wear bathing suits, not underwear. I have said it before and I will say it again: they are not expensive at Target! Also, please do not change right on the beach, find a restroom. Please understand that I am not against non-residents of Rockaway from enjoying our beaches. I just think that if they knew the rules, it would be a bit better. I have a few more rules and they will be out next week. Have a great week everyone. Of course, if I missed a rule, let me know so I can include it in next week’s column: email me at beth81772@aol.com. Part II coming next week.

Sandaway Beach Last week, Katie McFadden wrote about the sand erosion I was itching to write about right after the project was finished, all because I saw a glaring fault to the whole project. I hesitated, but not now. While it is absolutely stupendous to see the sand stretch so far and wide, knowing that we residents, and also the millions of visitors this year, can enjoy the stretch of beach that is most often the busiest of the entire peninsula, the problem I see is that I doubt it will last to the end of the beach season, let
alone ‘til October. Here’s the reason, looking at the picture, they failed to fill in the precise area where all the erosion starts, the escarpment right at the main jetty. Instead of filling sand halfway out to the tip of the jetty, like they have all other replenishment jobs by the ACOE in the decades past, ‘someone’ said, “nah, leave it as it is.” This was a humungous mistake! All they’ve done now—the Parks Dept. that is, because they were the ones who made this catastrophic decision—is
Page 29
completely exaggerate every inch of erosion to a scale of 1000 times compared to if they had filled halfway out of the main jetty. Here’s why. With the littoral current, or longshore current heading east to west, the water movement flows in around the jetty and with wave action forcing the water deeper over the beach in that area, obviously pulling sand away. Now the ocean via high tides and wave action has every opportunity to just keep gouging more and more beach away. If you remember in the past sand replenishment, we never had massive sand drop offs like today, because the sand gradually tapered off into the ocean due to the evenness of the sand fill. If they had filled sand halfway out of the jetty to keep it uniform with the rest of the beach filled in, this would take over more than a year to create the escarpment not even remotely near to where it currently is that was left alone. After the project was finished and they’re starting to pack up the pipes, I went to
one of the project leads (who wants to be anonymous) and I asked, “WTH!!! Why on earth did you guys not fill sand further out at the jetty? In fact, you’ve done no filling in at all!” The response was, “They (Parks Dept.) got an extra $3 million of sand and they told us where to put, and that area wasn’t included. We just put the sand where they told us to.”
Well done NYC Parks Dept.! Another feather in your cap of blatantly proving you have no concept of how to run and protect ocean-facing beaches. Stay to trimming trees, mowing grass, and leave the ocean and its environment to subject matter experts who won’t throw money (and sand) away like you’re doing. All images by @sergiocostaphotography

A Rail-y Great Effort On May 4, Troop 147 Eagle Scout candidate Matthew Rosenhaus, his fellow Scouts, families and friends came together at Gateway National Recreation Area’s Jacob Riis Park to volunteer for Matthew’s Eagle Scout Service Project. Together, they worked to preserve all the ship’s rail along the boardwalk. When asked why he chose this for his project, Matthew responded, “As a frequent visitor and now as a volunteer, I have noticed the wear and tear they take.” He added, “I just wanted to help get the place ready for the summer.” As part of the Eagle Service Project, Matthew put together a committee to help organize the event. He created a GoFundMe page to pay for the necessary equipment and supplies, and was also able to obtain donations of additional supplies. On the day of the event, and with more than 25 volunteers putting in over 150 hours,
Matthew coordinated the different teams that handled the rails, handled the logistics, and the administrative functions. Even a brief rain shower didn’t deter this group from finishing. When the rain came, the group took a break, had some lunch and waited for the rain to stop. Some of
the parents could be heard talking about it like a rain delay in baseball. “Once the rain stopped, we pulled the covers off and got back to it.” When asked how it went, Matthew said, “I think it went great. I’m so happy we got to finish from end to end. I really want to thank everyone who donated, everyone
who helped me set this up, and most of all everyone who came out today to make this a success.” Troop 147 is a traditional Scout Troop, sponsored by the Rockaway Artists Alliance, now in its fifth year. For more info on how to join, email Trooppack147@gmail. com
3rd Annual HORSESHOE CRAB FESTIVAL at Jamaica Bay Refuge By Alex Zablocki
On Sunday, May 19, more than 120 participants enjoyed a day of educational and fun activities at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge celebrating Jamaica Bay's horseshoe crabs. The main attraction was the annual mating ritual of the horseshoe crabs as they came ashore to mate and lay eggs. On hand were naturalists, Mickey Cohen, Dave Grant, and Don Riepe—Jamaica Bay Guardian for the American Littoral Society—to explain the ecological and medical importance of these ancient animals to the wonder of kids and adults alike. In partnership with the American Littoral Society, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) announced the launch of a joint YouTube Channel featuring
four short videos as part of the series, "Explore Jamaica Bay: New York City’s Natural Oasis". Each video, produced by Dan Hendrick, producer of the documentary, "Saving Jamaica Bay," takes viewers on a journey of wildlife in the bay, including horseshoe crabs, osprey, shorebirds and raptors.
During the festival, the film, "New York City’s Oldest Inhabitants: Horseshoe Crabs in Jamaica Bay," was screened. For more information, visit www. jbrpc.org. Other programs included a children’s program by Lisa Schnell, author of “High Tide For Horseshoe Crabs,” a chil-
dren’s book. Molly Adams of NYC Audubon led a bird walk around the reserve. The Horseshoe Crab Festival was sponsored by the American Littoral Society, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Audubon, and Gateway National Recreation Area.

A Game in the Name of Ryan Rudden Many of the teams were more or less thrown together too, with guys jumping from one team to another to help out teams who couldn’t recruit a full squad. Others threw together gear from different people for those who didn’t have it. “Once everyone realizes who it’s all for and where the money is going, everyone stepped up to do their part,” said William Burns, another one of the event coordinators and players whose son also laced up his skates for the tournament. The Maroon team, which eventually won the tournament, was made up of some professional roller hockey players, including John Schiavo, who plays for the national team. (Yes, there is a national roller hockey team). “These are some of the best roller hockey players in the country,” Keane said. The tournament was just as entertaining as it has been in years past, with fastpaced hockey and high scoring games, some ending with scores in the double digits. Of course, hockey was only one aspect of the event, as it was really about the community coming together for a good cause. Between entry fees for players, all of the raffles and donations, the tournament raised over seven thousand dollars for Cystic Fibrosis, a charity handpicked by the Rudden family for this year’s tournament. “It would have meant a lot to him, bringing the community back to how it used to be with bringing people together,” Rudden said of her brother.
By Ryan Schwach
This past Saturday, May 18 at the 108th Street roller hockey rink, the Rockaway Rockies held their 12th annual Ryan Rudden Tournament to celebrate the memory of the late Ryan Rudden, who played for the Rockies and was killed in a car crash in 2002 at age 17. All the proceeds from the event went to the Breathe Easy Foundation which raises awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. “It’s nice to have people remember him,” said Rickie Lynne Rudden, Ryan’s sister, who helped organize the tournament. To make the event an even bigger hit, in addition to the tournament, there was a DJ to play music, a running grill cooking up food, and plenty of raffles with prizes ranging from a free oil change to Jets tickets and even a trip to Orlando, Florida. The tournament included eight teams fielding players ranging in ages 18 to mid-60s from in and outside of Rockaway. They each competed in quick 30-minute games. Every player wore jerseys with Rudden on the back and Ryan’s number 11. “It’s young guns and old guys,” said Tom Kirby, a Rockies vet who doubled as both a player, and a referee for the games he didn’t play. A few of the teams, like the one captained by Bobby Keane, a court officer and longtime Rockies coach, were made up of Rockaway players. “They are just my friends, the ones that play hockey very well,” Keane joked.

St. Malachy’s was founded in 1873 in Brooklyn, New York. The orphanage was moved to Rockaway Park in 1895. The homeless children were moved to the Rockaway Park building in 1898. St. Malachy’s was located on Beach 112th Street, and it was still in use until St. John’s Home for Boys opened on 111th Street. The children were moved out of the St. Malachy’s building to St. John's Home sometime in the early to mid-1940s. The now-closed Stella Maris High School (est. in 1943) sits on the old St. Malachy’s location. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Spotlight: The Rodriguez Family Rocks! This week, I had a special assignment for The Rockaway Times to spotlight local eightyear-old baking tycoon, Connor Rodriguez, known for his company, Connor’s Cupcakes, that has gone beyond viral, not because he has Down syndrome, but simply because his precious sweet gems are off the hook! (See story on page 12). After chatting with his parents, Fred and Marian, I left feeling empowered as a special-needs parent. Their testimony will truly inspire anyone—parent, caregiver or guardian with a special-needs loved one. I left even more reinforced with the sentiment that the term, “disability,” should be thrown out and replaced with “SPECIAL-ability!” This family is a testament that laying on your laurels and bemoaning your child’s diagnosis, whatever it maybe, is not going to help. As Fred Rodriguez aptly said, “Yeah, they diagnosed him with Down syndrome, but that diagnosis doesn’t put a value on his worth and what he can contribute to society. Who’s to say what’s normal? As their advocate, you have to kick every door down, exhaust every avenue and try your utmost best to give them a chance at the best life.” And Rodriguez family, kudos to you, because Connor’s life is as sweet as his cupcakes and his precious smile. However, admittedly folks, as the evening wore on, my euphoria waned as I thought of my little Soa. Am I “kicking every door open and exhausting every avenue” to help her be the best she can be? Have I laid on
my laurels, just accepting what the system has given her? Late at night, after giving myself a headache from pondering and beating up on myself, I decided to listen to the recording of the interview. The way this family truly laid out their lives, struggles and ongoing journey were just so bare bones. No sanctimonious talk, just the raw truth. Then it dawned on me! This interview, little Connor and the Rodriguez family were a gift. This family was so transparent about not just the struggles, but the variety of resources they tapped to help Connor. From lawyers, special needs advocates, schools, therapies—they shared so much and are equally passionate about helping other parents facing obstacles. They even launched nonprofit organization, Connor’s Place, a rich resource of information for special-needs families, regardless of their loved one’s diagnosis. For more info, visit www.connorsplace.org. Regarding schooling, they recommended the following: -Little Meadows (a half day preschool program) and Steppingstone Day School, (according to the Rodriguez’s, an awesome school with a top-notch staff and well-equipped with a sensory and handicapped-compliant gym). -Tiegerman (formerly known as School for Language and Communication Development). Tiegerman serves Pre-K to grade 12 students with developmental disabilities. The elementary school is located in Glen Cove, LI; the middle school is in
Page 39
Woodside, Queens (which from this upcoming September will be located in Glen Cove); and the high school is in Ridgewood. For more info, visit: www.tiegerman.org. To get Connor into private school, the Rodriguez family went through the NYC Department of Education’s (DOE) hearing process to basically fight for Connor to be placed in the school they deemed best for his needs. Note for this process, you have to hire an attorney and pay for a host of evaluations. They employed the services of attorney, Michele Kule-Korgood from Kule-Korgood & Associates (www. specialeducationlawny.com), and psychologist Sarah Birnbaum, (www.nyspecialneeds. com), who conducted some of the evaluations and was a vast wealth of information for the Turning 5 process with the DOE .Note that I wrote an article about this process featuring local, Regina Skyer, who also is a passionate advocate and runs special education law firm, The Law Office of Regina Skyer & As-
sociates (www.skyerlaw.com). Another priceless gem of information Fred and Marian shared was Self Direction through OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities). Self-direction gives parents the flexibility to choose the mix of supports and services that are right for their child. With self-direction, you are given a yearly budget, where parents or the designated guardian choose services, or the staff and organizations that provide the services. That can include for example, swimming lessons at the YMCA. The Self Direction funding can be directed to that, or any other recreational activity or therapy that benefits the special-needs individual’s development and overall happiness. For more info, visit: opwdd.ny.gov/selfdirection. So folks, as you get ready to kick off the summer this Memorial Day weekend, and honor our veterans, check out these resources. And put an order in for Connor’s Cupcakes (connorscupcakes.com)!

Far Rockaway Day Center, a day program operated by AHRC New York City, serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has partnered with IDNYC to serve as host for a mobile enrollment center on Wednesday, May 29 and Thursday, May 30. All New York City residents, 10 years and older, who reside in the five boroughs are eligible for the ID card, regardless of immigration status. IDNYC offers a wide range of benefits for registered cardholders. Free one-year memberships are available to some of the city’s finest cultural institutions, such as the Film Forum or zoos. Steep discounts on movie tickets, sporting events, and amusement park tickets to places such as Six Flags are available. In addition, IDNYC cards can serve as a library card anywhere in the city.
The Day Center became interested in hosting the event, as many of its self-advocates found themselves unable to enter government buildings without proper identification. “One of the main goals for Far Rockaway Day Center and the community is inclusion in all forms,” Nixon Darbouze, Community Support Supervisor at Far Rockaway Day Center said. “Having an ID will provide a sense of independence and give access to the community. We are pleased to offer this opportunity to every member of the community, especially community youth.” Far Rockaway Day Center is located at 1069 Dickens Street, connected to the Bayswater Jewish Center. Registration will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a lunch break between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. each day.

Yeah, yeah, the mountains at Yosemite National Park are kinda cool, but not nearly as awesome as those shirts Kenny Monahan and Alison Cunneen are rocking. The stunning duo are enjoying traveling with Kenny’s daughter, Kerry, and her husband, Josh.

In The Garden
Addabbo Sponsors 9/11 Remembrance Day New legislation sponsored by State Senator Joe Addabbo, to create an annual September 11, 2001 day of remembrance and brief moment of silence in New York’s public schools took a positive step forward after being approved by the Senate Education Committee. “It’s hard to imagine that almost 18 years have passed since the horrific 9-11 terrorist attacks that stole the lives of thousands of innocent people in New York that day and even today, as the illnesses and related deaths continue in the lingering aftermath of this devastating assault on our country,” Addabbo said. “While it may seem to many of us like the attacks only happened yesterday, it’s important to realize that the vast majority of the children in our schools today weren’t even born when this tragedy
occurred.” Addabbo believes an official observance of September 11th in New York’s public schools will help to ensure that the events of that day are never forgotten, and that the state’s young people are fully educated about the terrorist attacks. Under the legislation, a brief period of silence—which would not be of a religious nature—would be observed at the opening of the school day to encourage dialogue in the classroom about the history of 9-11 and how it affected New York City, New York State and the rest of the country. Now that the Senate bill has been approved by the Senate Education Committee, it will be scheduled for a vote by the full Senate. In the Assembly, the legislation (A.1801) is under review by the Assembly Education Committee.

Are you enjoying your early spring garden? Soon your tulips and irises will fade, if they haven’t already, and you are ready for some new color. But first, take the time to tie your tulip foliage neatly using a large tulip leaf. These leaves provide nourishment for next year’s blooms. Your gardener won’t do that, he wants to plant new bulbs for you. You’re ready for some colors. Geranuims for sun, impatiens for shade, some dusty miller, are Rockaway favorites. But I suggest that you expand. Google, go to a plant
center, walk down the aisles, ask questions. Try at least one new flower each year. Make it your own, learn about it, how it grows. Plant so there is always something in bloom. Don’t fertilize new plants, wait until they’re established. Have you discovered the butterfly bush? Its nectar attracts butterflies and you wake up each morning to its sweet smell. Oh, you have a dark corner, try some fern—but watch out, they multiply and will take over—don’t plant flowers with them. Seeds, weeds, and more next week.
