'TIS THE SEASON!
The Summer Guide is out! The 2018 Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is being distributed door to door with the regular paper this week. For those of you who are not on the delivery route, don’t worry, you can pick up The Guide at our newsstands, The Rockaway Times office, and at various locations throughout Rockaway. We will be restocking drop-off locations every week through the 4th of July. After that, they become collector’s items! The Guide is a comprehensive overview of all things Rockaway. We provide snapshot profiles of neighborhoods from Far Rockaway to Breezy Point. We list schools, houses of worship, and government offices including police and fire departments. More than 100 advertisers

know the importance of being in The Guide because it’s a keepsake and readers can refer to it for phone numbers and addresses all year long. The Guide has articles about what’s new since last year, what to do on the bay, where to go on the ferry and what people arriving by ferry might do. You’ll find info about the Rockaway music and arts scene and a pull-out map with all the boardwalk concessions. And you can plan to be busy because we’ve included a Summer Calendar. There’s lots more, but we’ll let you discover that. Oh, we forgot the best part. Like the weekly newspaper, The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is free! And with more glossy pages than ever it has the feel of a real magazine. And did we mention, it's free?

Hugging And Cringing I’ve confused people. They can’t tell if I’m socially awkward or socially inept. Which reminds me of that old sports quote from a coach to a player, “Son, are you ignorant or apathetic?” The reply? “I don’t know and I don’t care.” Anyway, I’m kinda both – especially when it comes to hugging. The bro hug is that thing that starts as a classic handshake and morphs into a kind of shoulder bump, half hug. I don’t really get who you’re supposed to go bro with. A really good friend might be someone who hates freaking hugging and that’s one of the reasons he’s a really good friend. Or he’s such a good friend you don’t want to do a bro hug because it seems phony or too common. You see guys meeting for the first time and they go in for the bro and I’m like, whoa. Jeez, ya just met, really? It’s become a social norm and I remain abnormal. A hug suggests affection. When I say hello I want to be polite, not affectionate. It’s not a macho thing. I just don’t want a hug. I chalk it up to being Irish. The closest thing to a hug is saying something nice behind someone’s back. I can be envious of others who fully embrace the embrace. My brother-in-law is a full-fledged hugmeister. He zooms right past bro to
bear hug. He’s all in, practically promiscuous. It took me a decade or three but I’ve gotten used to his arms surrounding me. By now, if I just shook his hand it would be awkward, and that’s all I’m trying to avoid—being awkward— which sometimes makes me awkward. Ya follow? Bro hugs, bear hugs… whatever happened to nodding your chin at someone? And every now and then a guy gives me a kiss like I’m one of the Sopranos. That’s just wrong. I’m ok with fist bumps. Casual, quick. No worrying about how hard to grip like with a handshake. And you don’t have to worry about someone bringing you to your knees with a vice grip or being skeeved out by somebody giving you a dead fish handshake. The guy greeting is tricky but I can get over it. But with ladies, I’m the worst. Do I shake hands, do I air kiss, kiss on the cheek? Or maybe a light hug? I don’t know. I’m cringing right now, as I type, at all the times I’ve cringed wondering if I took the right approach. I’ve done a cheek peck upon hello and then switched to a handshake on the goodbye because the greeting kiss seemed off. The handshake doesn’t make things right. The cringe lingers. It’s brutal. Ladies, can we just stick to a high five?

UNDERSTANDING OUR VETERANS UNIQUE STORYTELLING AT WEST END TEMPLE By Rosemary McGuire
Veterans’ Journeys Home, a show that took the stage at Lincoln Center last week, is coming to Rockaway for an exclusive one night engagement at West End Temple on Thursday, May 31 — and all are welcome. “In the Telling Care Cafe: Veterans' Journeys Home, attendees will hear the stories of four veterans, challenging the audience to deepen their understanding of the military and veteran experience,” Natalia Kozikowska, director of communications for Council Member Eric Ulrich, said. They are true stories that put a spotlight on the U.S. military men and women’s unique situations of returning home and the challenges faced. With the
intent to start a conversation, the show fosters understanding and give veterans a chance to stand in front of their communities and tell their stories. The Wurzweiler Care Cafe — from Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University — partners with The Telling Project to put together stories of what it means to come home after war. Set in a casual, cafe-type atmosphere, the show exposes veterans’ compelling, sometimes harsh experiences—many of which are foreign to civilians. As a bonus, social workers are on hand with resources to share with veterans and their families. Here’s how it works: veterans and family members are interviewed and recorded by The Telling Project. From the conversations, script development is constructed. Those veterans and veterans’ family

members interested in participating in the show then take a four to eight week course in performance followed by four to eight weeks of rehearsals, culminating in a unique storytelling event. Founded by Jonathan Wei ten years ago, The Telling Project has produced more than 40 original productions with more than 300 veterans nationwide in conjunction with co-creator, writer and director Max Rayneard. Wurzweiler Care Cafe comes from the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University whose motto is, “We don’t want to help you survive, we want to help you thrive.” Telling Care Cafe: Veterans’ Journeys Home, is made possible by support from NYC Council members, Eric Ulrich and Ydanis Rodriguez. “The Councilman funded
this initiative while he was serving as chair of the veterans committee. Performance is free-of-charge. Councilman Ulrich is a proud supporter of our veterans and a proud supporter of the arts. These performances, which coincide with the week of Memorial Day, serve as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave men and women in uniform,” Kozikowska said. So when the barbeques are over, and the parade of vessels in Fleet Week have sailed in and out, all are invited to come to West End Temple for a theater experience that’s been described as poignant, moving and eye-opening and a reminder of the true meaning of Memorial Day. West End Temple is located at 14702 Newport Ave, Neponsit. Call 718-738-1083 for more information.

***** Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. ***** The Parks Department deserves all the scorn coming its way. The announcement that beaches would be closed from Beach 91st to Beach 102nd this summer could have been made months ago. The erosion is obvious. Businesses and the public could have made plans accordingly. ***** With increased ferry service there will be increased shuttle service. Rumors were flying around that there would be no weekend service at all. Common sense wins! Keep up to date at Ferry.NYC ***** One thing to be emphasized: The full boardwalk and the surf-
THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2018 ing area from Beach 88th Street to Beach 91st Street will remain open. The Beach 97th Street concession and bathrooms will be open and a section in front of the concessions will be open for recreation, but there will be no access to the water. ***** Memorial Day ceremonies: On Sunday, in Broad Channel, the ceremonies start at 1 p.m. at the 17th Road Park flag pole. And then in Rockaway on Monday, after 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Francis de Sales, there will be a procession to the Memorial Circle on Beach 121st Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard and then the parade will continue to the Doughboy Monument at Beach 94th Street. ***** It’s that time of year. (The watch-your-bike time of year). The Graybeards and the 100th Precinct will be hosting a bike serializing event at the St. Francis de Sales school yard, Beach 129th Street, on June 9 from 9-11 a.m. Bring your bike, and have The Graybeards and local police officers etch a

serial number onto your bike or they’ll copy the one that already exists. These numbers will then be entered into a 100th Precinct database so that in the event your bike is lost or stolen and subsequently recovered, it can be returned to the rightful owner. ***** James O’Connor residing in Bolivia, North Carolina sent us a photo of a badge from the old Rockaway Beach Hotel (also known as The Imperial). It was a huge place that ran along the boardwalk from Beach 116th Street all the way to Beach 110th in the late 1800s. Mr. O’Connor is wondering if the place had its own security detail and has asked our historian, Emil Lucev and daughter, Katie, to look into it. We’ll let you know. Meanwhile, a new Rockaway Beach Hotel is going up not far from the original. ***** There’s a top show at the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) studio in Fort Tilden. BWS (Brooklyn Watercolor
Society) invites everyone to the Sunday reception of their show, Water Colors. This is a great chance to see work by local favorite, Arlene Cornell. ***** PBS will broadcast "Going to War," May 28, at 9 p.m. Local, Dennis Graham, is featured with other veterans discussing their experiences in Vietnam. Dennis hopes sharing his experiences will help other veterans to tell their stories and heal. ***** Congrats to Terence Stackpole (and mom, Tara!) on his recent graduation from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. He’s being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and reports to Quantico in early June. ***** There will be a rally on Sunday morning calling attention to the need for immediate action by the Army Corps of Engineers to begin the Reformulation Plan. See John Cori's column on Page 31.

Beaches Open Friday BUT…. NYC PARKS DROPS A STINK BOMB By Kevin Boyle
In Rockaway, it’s like Christmas morning when the beaches are declared open. But this year, it’s as if Santa Claus really did bring coal. And then dropped a stink bomb. This Friday, May 25, NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver will declare the City beaches open and the start of the summer season will be officially underway. Well, not all the beaches. In Rockaway Beach, big summer crowds are going to squeeze onto fewer available beaches. On Monday, the Parks Department announced that it will close eleven blocks, from Beach 91st Street to Beach 102nd Street, because erosion has wiped away so much sand. This strip of beach is among the more popular destinations for visitors and locals alike as it abuts the boardwalk where
the biggest concession exists at Beach 97th Street. The closed beaches are also just in front of the large parking area on Beach 94th Street and what is considered the beach’s welcome way, the wide steps leading to the boardwalk. It is no surprise to many here in Rockaway, that erosion is putting a damper on what normally is a day of celebration.
Locals have been demanding sand and beach protection for years. Although 3.5 million cubic yards of sand were poured on to Rockaway beaches in 2014, as part of a beach replenishment program, many residents rightly predicted the sand would wash away, unless permanent protective measures, such as jetties, were put in place.
The Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) is in charge of such measures and has not demonstrated any sort of urgency, frustrating residents and elected officials. A rally led by John Cori and Friends of Rockaway Beach will be held this Sunday, May 27 at Beach 97-98th Street and the beach hoping, yet again, to spur the ACOE into sorely needed action. U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, who has had some success getting the ACOE to budge, reacted to the beach closures with a statement: “Today, I am demanding the Army Corps host a community meeting ASAP and spell out in plain English a detailed timeline for locals.” While the disappearing beach is no surprise, the Parks’ announcement certainly was. Vendors, elected officials, and the public had no inkling such a stink bomb Continued on page 15

bors. Thanks again, hope to see you on Memorial Day. There is a 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Francis followed by a service at the Memorial Circle. My whole family will be there and they would love to meet you guys. Thomas McGonigal
Thank You Dear Editors: I cannot put into proper words how much gratitude I have for both of you and your staff for writing such a wonderful article about my brother, John. I can only say thank you. You both have a gift for writing. My family was so touched by how you described Johnny and some of the things we loved doing. Rockaway is a place in my heart. It will remain so because of people like you who remember. I truly believe my parents and I wouldn't have made it through those times without the St. Francis de Sales community and all our Rockaway neigh-
Quiet Please Dear Editors: I'm sure you will all agree if you have or know someone that has a "smaller" dog, it's not barking, its YAPPING, continuously. Now, I understand dogs bark every now and then, but these dogs just keep going, like the energizer bunny. When someone’s dog barks, the owner usually tells it to quiet down and it does. Why don't the owners of yapping dogs do the same with them, instead of just letting them stay in the yard going and going? Now, I like dogs and cats. I used to have both. But it’s quite annoying when I open my windows now and all I hear is yap, yap, yap. I wonder if anyone else agrees but just never said anything ? Name Withheld

Original Ties To Rock Dear Editors: I read your High Tide column that mentioned Original Grain watches and bracelets with great interest. My dear friend of 65 years, Dee McClean, visits his son-in-law and daughter Jim and Lauren Brennan, owners of this company in San Diego a few times a year. He usually brings me a surf or paddle tee shirt from the West Coast. Much to my surprise he recently handed me an Original Grain Whisky Barrel model watch from the collection Jim has designed and created. My jaw dropped and I stared at it for few days. It is simple but elegant. It's made with reclaimed wood from Kentucky Bourbon whiskey barrels. I brought it to Jared’s on Old Country Road in Westbury to have the band adjusted. The jeweler commented on its beauty and uniqueness. I write this letter to let your readers know that the Original Grain watches and bracelets are the real deal. Jim and Lauren also own a home in Belle Harbor and remain rooted in our com-
munity. I suggest that you go to their web site, OriginalGrain. com. You will find a wide variety of their products that are handsome and reasonably priced. John W. Roberts Ferry Bummed Dear Editors: I was so excited at the prospect of added ferry times, the Rockaway express route and bigger boats, but my hope that it would be for Rockaway commuters went out to sea. Added for commuters coming home to Rockaway was a 4:45 p.m. and a 5:45 p.m. ferry, but that’s it. Rockaway express routes run during the day, not the evening rush (in fact a 7:45 p.m. ferry was removed from service). Rockaway express routes run Monday through Friday from 12-5… great, but thanks for nothing since I get out of work at 6 p.m. Rush hour period is considered by most to be 4-8 p.m. but I guess not to Hornblower. Seems we are serving the day beach-going population rather Continued on page 11

Continued from Page 10 than the locals who have supported this ferry service yearround: snow, wind, sun and rain. Weekend service ‌ well that’s where it seems the focus went for added frequency. This seems to run from Pier 11 about every 30 minutes, so it’s very clear this is an expansion of service for those who don’t live on the peninsula. While I don’t think this is a bad thing (given last summer was a nightmare) it’s sad this service didn’t have the Rockaway people in mind when “adding service.â€? Looks like my commute will continue on the A train. Thanks a lot. Beth O’Neill Friend Commends Dear Editors: Thank you for the articles and photos remembering Clare Droesch. Her passing was devastating for many people and she will never be forgotten for not only basketball but for showing others how to keep fighting even when the odds are
tough. She made a lasting impression and your newspaper did a good job showing that. A Friend Governor’s No King Dear Editors: On his way to a likely reelection, Andrew Cuomo is attempting to block candidates who run without his approval. It may be convenient to have uncontested primaries, but the Democratic tradition gives that decision to primary voters. We need to hear all responsible voices and make our decision. The Attorney General and Comptroller are elected separately from the Governor and must be free to criticize or even to oppose the Governor. The Democratic Party has grown from the campaigns of Eugene McCarthy against Lyndon Johnson, Mario Cuomo against Ed Koch, Bill Thompson against Bill de Blasio, and Andrew Cuomo against Carl McCall. We need an open tent. Perhaps a few brave Republicans might follow our example. Norman Silverman

Tribalism
I read a Wall Street Journal article recently by Purdue University President Mitch Daniels recapping his commencement speech to the recent graduating class that I thought was excellent. In the speech, he pointed out that the graduates were part of a privileged elite, a nouveau aristocracy. He went on to say that it was not based upon wealth or class (witness the last royal wedding – my invitation got lost, how about you?); but, instead it was based upon joining a cluster group he spotlighted: Purdue graduates. I thought he was going to extoll the virtues of Purdue, recommend that the graduates stay in touch with each other. Instead, he surprised me and said just the opposite. In fact, he noted the urge to resist the movement toward tribalism,
and he defined that as the unintentional segregation of Purdue grads versus everyone else. He further extended the analogy to the rest of us who tend to stick to our own kind. He pointed out how dangerous that can be to a democracy and to our freedom. My Italian grandparents shared an experience not unlike other immigrants that came to these shores. They came with others from their village, country, continent; and they all moved to the same place and they interacted with each other, only mixing when their children ventured out into another neighborhood and perhaps married someone from another tribe. My grandparents came here over one hundred years ago. My dad still lives in the same place he was born, but everything around him has changed. In fact, all the new people who moved into the neighborhood call people like my dad and others that were born there and
still live there: the Leftovers! As I drove around the neighborhood recently, I realized how hard it was to simply park a car. There is no place to park anymore because all the one- and two-family homes have been replaced with multi-dwelling units; and everyone has a car. It’s crazy! Which brings me to this slice of heaven. With parking rules in effect, it is harder than ever to park, but only slightly doable. Every available lot has not been filled in with condos, yet. With the exception of those really hot days when the peninsula bulges to accommodate New York’s hot and sweaty, we mostly strike a “them” versus “us” pose, and stick to our tribal roots. You know the terms, Down for the Day (DFDs) and other type descriptors, separate us from invaders. But really, we are hot and sweaty too, we just happen to live here during the really cold winter months. I remember when we were adding technology to the floor
of the NYSE at a very fast pace to keep in line with federal rules. Because the changes were being forced on the traders and the Exchange, the members had no choice. There was a point in time when the traders finally got the technology tools to help them stay relevant and compete. And it was at that time they all asked, “can’t we stop and stay right here now?” We had hit a “sweet spot” and we all knew it; the exact right mix of human interaction and technological tools. Unfortunately, the Feds had other ideas and that period only lasted for a short time. I hope we never get to the point where the “them” outnumber the “we” and rather than us calling them DFDs, they call us the “Leftovers!” Somehow, I think we ourselves are close to being in that “sweet spot” and I hope it goes on forever, and that all our tribes get along peacefully, both here and in the world. Happy summer folks!

Queens RAIL and WAY Task Force Begins Work “WHERE THERE’S A RAIL THERE’S A WAY” By Rick Horan
The Queens RAIL and WAY Task Force is a newly-formed, ad hoc group of community stakeholders who want to see the old Rockaway Beach Branch right-of-way (ROW) used to expand rail transportation and provide more parkland. The immediate goal of the Task Force is to work with the MTA and the Queens community to work out a broad design for a subway connection under most of the 3.5-mile ROW with the surface utilized for a park, such as the QueensWay. The Task Force has already begun working towards the following goals: 1. Unite the Queens community around a plan that fully utilizes the right-of-way with a modern, underground subway, from Atlantic Avenue to Queens Blvd., with a
world-class park on top. 2. Ensure the underground option and other community needs are included in the MTA feasibility study. 3. Promote public-private partnerships and design-build methods for speed and efficiency. 4. Calculate return-on-investment (ROI) for the combined project for the City and its people. The Borough of Queens and indeed all of New York City has one shot to work out the best use of the long-neglected Rockaway Beach Branch ROW. That’s why the Coalition for QueensRail is reaching out to The Friends of QueensWay, The Trust for Public Land, local businesses, community organizations, government agencies and elected officials to work together for the common good. For years, Queens has been

unable to arrive at a consensus as to how to use this priceless asset. Advocates for restoring rail service and those seeking to convert it to a park have passionately made their case. With no resolution in sight, the only reasonable path forward is to build both. Thankfully this is not only possible, but indeed the only way to fully utilize the right-of-way, while addressing the needs of all constituents. Rather than continuing to debate which idea makes more sense, we would rather use our resources to advocate for both projects. We’ve gotten support from many elected officials. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said, “Compromise and open communication are how we are going to make smart decisions, so we can invest in permanent transit infrastructure for our communities. The anticipated return on investment from this project makes it more expensive NOT to build.” State Senator James Sanders (District 10) said, "Reconnecting south and central Queens with midtown will significantly expand employment, education and recreation opportunities for all New Yorkers, especially those living at the edge. Safer, less congested roads, cleaner air and additional parkland makes this a no-brainer.” Congressman Gregory Meeks expressed support: “The plan strikes the appropriate balance between addressing serious inequities in transportation access and promoting environmental justice.” NYS Senator Joe Addabbo was also onboard: “I look forward to working with the task force and all interested individuals to find the best way to move forward with this ambitious plan.” It wasn’t just Rockaway officials who showed support. “It’s time to reactivate the Rockaway Beach Branch and reconnect Southeast Queens
with the rest of the borough. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Assembly and community leaders to get the conversation moving on better transportation for Queens,” NYS Assemblyman Mike Miller (District 38) said. Councilman Robert Holden (District 30) is also in support of the Task Force. NYC Council Member Donovan Richards (District 31) said, “Including parkland in the plan to bring back the Rockaway Beach line is a winwin for all of Queens and I commend the Coalition for QueensRail, the Friends of QueensWay and the Trust for Public Land for coming together to build a plan that works for everyone.” The Queens RAIL and WAY Task Force’s work with the MTA will initially focus on the need to include the underground rail approach in their ongoing reactivation study. We understand that expanding the scope will mean a further delay, but Queens has already waited 56 years and deserves a no-compromise study. The MTA needs to consider all options, especially putting the rail underground with a park on top. Besides, this is a unique opportunity to prove to the world that New York is still capable of building great projects. Now it’s our turn to invest in transportation and recreation infrastructure for ourselves, our children and our children’s children. We must address local concerns, implement best-in-class, design-build methodologies and utilize public-private partnerships. Task Force invitations are being sent to elected officials, community organizations and government agencies as logistics are being worked out for the first meeting. Individuals interested in participating or receiving updates are encouraged to contact the Task Force at info@RAILandWAY.org

BEACHES OPEN FRIDAY

would be dropped just days ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Congressman Gregory Meeks called for Army Corps action, but also blasted City Hall. “I am both surprised and dismayed by the City’s announcement that the busiest stretch of Rockaway Beach will be closed this summer. This is a failure on the part of the City to alert lawmakers with sufficient time to act, and a failure to communicate with the community.” That’s right, not even a heads-up. Vendors at the Beach 97th Street concession were stunned. Andrew Field, who operates Tacoway Beach and is a member of the Rockaway Beach Club, the main lease-holders of the concessions, said they had been in talks with Parks throughout the off-season but had been given no indication such an announcement was coming. “We came back after Sandy. We’ve been through plenty and would have planned for
THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2018 this.” Steve Stathis, a vendor who runs Boarders, said he ordered beach umbrellas to rent. “What good are they now?” Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski said Parks and NYC Lifeguard Officials conferred throughout the spring about the shrinking beaches and what to do. Lewandowski was asked if she thought the beach was somehow going to get bigger with all the recent storms. She replied that sand, “comes and goes” and that ultimately the lifeguards said it would be too dangerous to open the beaches for swimming. Another Parks person said they didn’t want to be “hasty” when deciding the fate of the beaches. Field said the announcement made it seem like all Rockaway beaches will be closed and visitors won’t get the message that all the concessions will be open with full slate of food, drink and entertainment options. He wonders if the public will grasp anything beyond the open-
ing of the press release which begins: “NYC Parks has announced that Rockaway Beach will be closed this summer in the area between Beach 91st Street and Beach 102nd Street in order to maintain the protective dune and keep swimmers safe.” Indeed, in the nearly 500word Monday press release, there was nothing about the concessions themselves remaining open. There was just one mention of the concessions at all: “a section of the beach in front of the concessions and bathrooms at 97th Street will be open for recreation, but there will be no access to the water.” That’s it.
Page 15 When The Rockaway Times received the release and posted it online, the public reaction was in a word, brutal, with Parks and the Army Corps getting slammed. The news was seen by more than 40,000 people on our Facebook page with hundreds of people expressing outrage. And now, on the heels of all this, is the annual Beach Opening ceremony scheduled for Friday, May 25 with Commissioner Silver on hand. Usually, the happy event is staged at Beach 94th Street on the Boardwalk with food and drinks supplied by—yes, the concessionaires. This time, Parks—probably trying to avoid declaring the beaches open a closed beach—will instead host the opening at Beach 108th Street. The kickoff time was still to be determined as The Rockaway Times went to press. So far as we can tell, the Parks Department and Army Corps can’t do anything about the weather forecast which calls for warm and sunny.

Pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and residents may finally see their congestion nightmare come to an end with the installation of a three-way traffic light at the intersection of Beach Channel Drive and Beach 94th Street — the first in a series of improvements laid out by the Department of Transportation (DOT) at an emergency meeting of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association last Monday evening. It’s been close to three years in the works, but it appears relief may finally be in sight with improvements designed to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety and ease traffic in the area around Thai Rock, Bungalow Bar, McDonalds, Denis O’Connor Funeral home and the ramp from the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge (CBB). “It’s a challenging intersection,” Al Silvestri, Queens deputy borough commissioner for the DOT said. “With complex merging, no signals and a high volume of pedestrians, we’ve been looking at this area for a while now. We’ve made some tweaks in the past, but the changes we’re going to show you tonight will be a lot more palatable,” Silvestri said to the residents, business owners and community activists who filled the meeting space at Peninsula library for a feedback session. The DOT project includes three components: installation of a traffic signal at Beach Channel Drive and Beach 94th Street, concrete repairs to sidewalks and medians on Beach 95th Street at the bridge exit, creating a new pedestrian crossing, and the implementation of a new greenway connection bike route from CBB to the Rockaway Beach boardwalk. Proposed changes to Rockaway Freeway and Beach 95th Street include increasing pedestrian space with a new concrete curb extension and a new east-to-west
pedestrian crossing; and on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 92nd Street, a designated crosswalk from east to west. Although the barriers on Beach Channel Drive will remain, a cut through for the crosswalk is planned. Citing lack of a bay to ocean bicycle connection, the DOT proposes a northbound connection to CBB on Beach 94th Street adjacent to the center median and southbound connection from CBB to Beach 92nd Street and Rockaway Freeway, connecting the bridge to the Rockaway Beach boardwalk. While there’s no firm start date, DOT hopes to have enough community support by the end of the summer to move forward with the plan that they feel will enhance safety and minimize bottlenecks in an already heavily congested area. “We want to come up with something that will work for the community,” Alice Friedman, strategic initiatives manager for DOT said. “We’ve had a number of community requests that we’re trying to wrap up into one package.” Friedman predicts the traffic signal installation sometime later this year, and the other improvements projected for next year. “They (the DOT) listened to us and made most of the changes we asked for,” John Cori, president of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association (RBCA) said. “We’re pleased, except that they proposed a closure of the service road next to the police station and most people don’t want to see that happen.” Check out the RBCA’s Facebook page for more information.

Back With A Reminder
Now it should come as no surprise to those of you who know me that my idea of a healthy lifestyle has always been to patiently wait for those lemons that life continually hands each of us, whereupon I would mix them with vodka and then tell everyone I'm simply doing a cleanse. When last I left all of you back in early April, I had stupidly managed to fall out of bed, while half asleep, seriously injur-
ing my back to the point that while prone on the floor yelling, to no one in particular, "I've fallen and I really can't get up." I had visions of John Lennon standing above me singing, "Instant Karma's finally got you...Gonna knock you right out of bed..." It was immediately (and painfully) obvious that, after 68 long years, my lower back had pulled a Roberto Duran and finally threw in the towel while shouting "No mas!" to the referee of life. The good news is that after several trips to my family physician, an orthopedic surgeon, a pain management specialist, and a trip last week to St. John's Episcopal Hospital over in Far Rockaway for a lumbar epidural steroid injection, my back pain has been reduced markedly to the point where I am once again able to function with
some semblance of normality. That being said, it's that time of year again when I encourage all Broad Channel residents to take some time this coming weekend to wander up to Cross Bay Boulevard and view and support our town's annual Memorial Day Parade. Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day (as it is now known) is a day of remembrance, which originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. This Sunday, May 27, the Broad Channel VFW will be hosting our community’s annual Memorial Day parade. This event is a testament to our town’s desire to honor those men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedom on this sacred day. The parade will start at 1 p.m. with a wreath-lay-
ing ceremony at the 17th Road Park Flag Pole and then travel along Cross Bay Boulevard to the George Riekers Veterans Memorial Park for another wreath-laying and closing ceremonies. As always, our honored guests will be those veterans from St. Albans Hospital who will be joined by our own local veteran members of the Broad Channel VFW and American Legion, as well as elected officials and other community organizations. Please keep in mind that fewer than 10 percent of Americans can claim the title “veteran.” While the phrase “uncommon valor was a common virtue,” has been so often repeated that it risks becoming a cliché, it is no less true. In 1789, George Washington said, “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how
justified, shall be directly proportional as to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their country.” Please make it a point to spend a few moments of your time to walk up to Cross Bay Boulevard to view the parade this Sunday to show your support for our veterans and to express your appreciation for those veterans that have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. After the parade, all of you are invited to the VFW Post on Shad Creek Road for a BBQ and a chance to both greet and thank our men and women who have served us so well and to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that they may not be forgotten. Broad Channel...why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

RBB Skyrockets With Spectacular Options
By Kami-Leigh Agard
Locals, this Memorial weekend — take a stroll down Rockaway Beach Boulevard (RBB), and witness for yourself, why the Boulevard is skyrocketing as Rockaway’s hot commercial locale for world-connoisseur foodies and shoppers alike. From a heralded halal food joint, plus delicioso Columbian cuisine, cold treats devoured under the stars and authentic Mexican street food, and not to mention, exceptional shopping for clothing and novelty times — here’s where you must stop and salute! Sam’s Food Castle (99-04 Rockaway Beach Blvd./ 917929-9132) dishes up heavenly halal food. For those looking for a quick fix of lamb, chicken gyros or even falafel over rice and salad — Sam’s is the place to go! The seasoning of spices is so precariously balanced, you will be greedily wondering why you didn’t order more! Also, Sam’s offers American standard deli food like breakfast platters, heros colossally topped with your favorite cold cuts and cheeses, plus freshly-blended smoothies. Yumm…you won’t be disappointed. Just up the Boulevard from Sam’s is La Barracuda on Beach 97th Street. With its custom-made decor and beachy vibe, this outdoor dive not only divinely reflects Rockaway’s surf and turf culture, but also teases you with its Columbian aromas. Walking past, just the smell of the food will woo you in. Their steaming chicken, beef, shrimp — all served on a stick, optionally served over a bed of delectably seasoned rice or salad — gives you the feeling that you just consumed an aphrodisiac. Plus, from daily sweet and savory crepes, freshly-made smoothies, aguas frescas, açai bowls, pinchos (chicken or pork topped with a small piece of garlic-butter brushed toast or a fried plantain tostone), and fresh seafood dished up only on weekends — all enjoyed sitting under an umbrella — you’ll feel like you are on the beach. La Barracuda opens daily from 10 a.m. Just note according to
owner, Martha Acosta, “We sincerely want to respect our neighbors. We will play music, but of course promise to keep in mind that we have families living in this neighborhood. I have lived in Rockaway for over 20 years, and want to maintain that we are all familia striving for us as a community to soar, but still respect our needs and wants.”
As for why choosing the name, “La Barracuda?” Acosta said, “A barracuda fish is aggressive, and our food strives to be just as aggressively delicious.” Well folks, you will be aggressively devouring the food here. Craving ice cream, italian ice, shake, a smoothie, or even for the adults — a wine-infused icy treat? Look no further than Uncle Louie G (92-10 Rockaway Beach Blvd./ 718-4742268). Uncle Louie G has been a much-beloved frozen staple on RBB for a while, but here is what’s new and totally chill. First up, grab the chance to bring the entire family and enjoy your creamy delight in their sand-filled back garden. Kids love this as they get to dig in the sand after literally inhaling their ice cream. Also, there are plethora of new delish treats on the menu such as the Cook-
ie Monster, Purple Unicorn and S’more Sundae. As for the wine-loving adults — who can resist a Chocolate Cabernet, Peach Zinfandel or Red Raspberry Chardonnay? According to Mara Valentino, proprietor of Louie G, these wine-infused treats are for “adults after dark.” With just five percent alcohol, they hit the spot and of course, responsible adults will enjoy reasonably. Uncle Louie G has extended their hours to 11 p.m. on weekends. Valentino said, “Before we used to close at 10 p.m., but will still find ourselves serving customers long after. Now, we will be here to serve later and indulge everyone with their favorite treat.” Note you can book Uncle Louie G’s amazing backyard/garden for birthday parties, and even wedding-themed and baby shower events. Last summer, have you ever encountered a tricked-out pink van parked up and down Shore Front at various intersections, vending a tempting feast of must-have beach and girly items? Well, THE SWELLIFE truck is now an official brickand-mortar stationed on RBB (91-08 Rockaway Beach Blvd., right next to Station RBNY). When you walk in, you will first be mesmerized by their beach-centric decor, wrapped in a swell of pink. From beach clothing, hand-crafted jewelry, apothecary, household and children’s items, this shop is a treasure that you must discover as they source their gems from
across the world. According to co-owner and local resident, Katie Long, “When we learned that this spot was available, it was an opportunity we could not ignore. Our hope is that people come and see the amazing finds we have to offer. We buy goods from global market artisans in places like Peru and Mexico, not factory-manufactured wares from China. Our hope is to be here year-round, but that of course is up to how we survive this summer. I just hope people come in and see what our brand is about and support us!” Last, but certainly not least is Taco by the Sea, (located at the former location the now-closed Rocket Rolls (88-12 Rockaway Beach Blvd. 718-318-2891). Readers, this spot is not going to be offering American wa-
ter-downed tacos. These tacos are straight from the streets of Mexico. According to the owners, they want people to taste and fall in love with authentic tacos: “Our tacos are straight from what we know in La Calle de Hambre (Street of the Hungry) in Mexico. My aunt is going to be cooking and trust me, people will taste the difference. “We will not serving Tex-Mex tacos with a bunch of cheese and little seasoning. When people come, they will see, taste and come back for more. A darle que es mole de olla! (“Let’s get to it... it's mole de olla!”) Taco By the Sea will also be serving a killer nitrogen coffee, matcha green tea and homemade italian ices and smoothies. So folks, take a stroll down and see for yourself, the Boulevard is exploding, and will keep evolving with the community’s support. Of course, there’s more but that’s why we have a Summer Guide and weekly newspaper! Stay tuned.

So what’s with the machinery and hoses? Well, it’s not a mini beach replenishment project (though we had our hopes up!). The Parks Department tells us it’s the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) “filling the geotubes under-
neath the concession islands. Geotubes are bags made out of geotextile fabric that are filled with sea sand to fight erosion. The concession areas need this extra protection because they were not rebuilt like the rest of the boardwalk after Sandy.

Lessons From Abroad “Be Well, Be Happy” is a constant reminder to stop, pay attention and be aware of our emotional state of mind. We do our best in this column to give you tools to work with when you feel out of balance or unhappy. Sometimes the tools work and other times not so much. Many of the topics or focal points come from a personal experience. The following is my experience traveling with my daughter in Portugal. The most beautiful, spiritual country I have ever visited. We feel blessed to have had this extraordinary time together. A true exploration from
the southernmost point of Portugal to the north in Porto. The journey starts out in Lisbon, where we stay for two nights in a beautiful apartment located right in the center of Lisbon. Everything is walking distance and we cover around 10 miles a day up the hills and down again. We are in good shape from yoga and Kayla from CrossFit so our bodies can handle the constant movement. I am too excited to slow down. The first night we go on a sailboat and we get some needed rest for our legs, especially since we had to run a mile
to catch the sailboat that was just pulling out of the marina. Next day we go on a walking tour of Lisbon. So many interesting places to see and learn about. The good news is after the tour, Kayla is too tired to shop! Successful day. The third day we head back to the airport to rent a car for the next part of our journey. I am somewhat nervous because I will be driving a manual car with the clutch. But since I learned how to drive 35 years ago using a clutch, I didn’t think I would have a problem. It’s like riding a bike, you never forget, right? Well I make it out of the airport and my car starts smoking. I quickly pull over and take a few deep breaths. I look at my daughter and she says, “No worries Mom, you are doing fine.” Hah! Yes, I can do this, so I stop clutching for dear life and head back on the road with renewed confidence. This time no smoking and we make it to the highway with ease, heading south to the Algarve. My nerves are a bit shaken but I have to hold it together because I am the one in charge. Well, I will not bore you with the
The Rockaway Times rest of our amazing trip but I will tell you it was a struggle at times to be composed and relaxed in a foreign country moving around every two days. However, there were churches everywhere and I prayed every day for a safe trip. When things happened, I was able to take a few deep breaths and observe the situation before responding. Yoga teaches us to surrender and truly let go of that which doesn’t serve us. We learned to go with the flow of life and adjust along the way. We became the witness. When things didn’t go our way, we accepted it and knew everything happens for a reason. We laughed often and had the most carefree spirit living in the moment and knowing that this could be our last trip together. We heard about the passing of beautiful Clare Droesch and we were very sad. Our memories of Clare were that she always had a beautiful smile for everyone. We went to church to pray for Clare and her family and were reminded to put things in perspective and realize the hardships we have may be nothing compared to what others endure.
On Monday, May 28th, 2017 The American Legion Daniel M. O'Connell Post # 272 will host its annual Memorial Day Parade. The day will commence with a Memorial mass at 10:30am on Beach 129 Street at Saint Francis de Sales Church. At the conclusion of services, a ceremony will be held at the Four Chaplains monument outside the church. The parade, with Grand Marshal Monsignor Bracken, will proceed to Beach 121th Street for a ceremony and rededication of the plaque for John P. McGonigal at the Jewish War Veterans Memorial Circle. Upon conclusion of our services there, the parade will proceed to the Doughboy monument at Veterans Memorial Plaza at Beach 94th Street. Following the reading of the names of those from the Rockaway community who gave their lives in service to our great nation and a memorial service, we will retire to the Knights of Columbus hall on Beach 90th Street for refreshments and hot dogs. Memorial Day is the most solemn of days for Veterans as we remember the brave men and women who made the supreme sacrice to defend and preserve freedom around the world. We are well aware that the Memorial Day weekend has become the official opening of the "summer season" and many people are busy attending and their BBQs. We, as Legionnaires, do not march for ourselves but for those who gave their all for a grateful nation, we would be grateful for a robust turnout. I would like to give a special thanks to Monsignor Bracken, the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 21, and St. Francis de Sales for their support and participation in this parade. We cordially invite you to join us on this day of remembrance as we, for the 99th year in a row, honor our fallen comrades.

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning
Online Selling I am sure we all remember Tupperware. It was a great product that was launched in 1946. It was a new product and it did not initially sell well in retail stores because people did not know what it was for and how you use it. Hence, the Tupperware parties started. I remember my mom attending parties and we eagerly awaited our new items. The parties were also a social gathering where women got together. Now fast forward to the 2000s. People started having new types of parties. The two most common ones were Lia
Sophia and Stella Dot. Another party I attended a few times was the Pampered Chef parties which had unique kitchenware. At the last Pampered Chef party I attended, I could not buy anything because I had everything! The thing that was good about these parties was, again, the socialization. The host provided some appetizers and some drinks. (Except in Indiana when I walked to a jewelry party so as not to drink and drive and there was lemonade and Coca Cola). I still love a good jewelry party and most recently attended a
fabulous one with our local, Megan Rochelle from Trends by Meg. The new thing I do not understand, sorry ladies, is the online sale. You want me to purchase leggings, makeup, face cream, nail supplies, candles, etc., without getting some drinks and appetizers? And it is 2018, if this product is so great why is it not available at a retail outlet? One new thing people are selling online is something similar to Lee Press on Nails. The sales pitch is not having to go to the nail salon anymore. I love the nail salon. Again, at the nail salon I usually run into people I know, so there is socialization. I also catch up on reading and I RELAX. I truly enjoy my weekly manicures and pedicures, especially my massages. I also do not want to buy the makeup as I buy my makeup at Duane Reade or Rite Aid. I usually wait until the buy-one get-one sale and I cash in. I do not want to spend $38 on mascara which is the price one online com-
pany sells for. Another company sells a lash booster for $150. I also hate when these people selling their wares ask you to shop small business days because they are the seller and they are a small business. However, these companies are multi-million and billion-dollar companies. They are not small businesses. So, please stop asking me to buy whatever it is you are selling online. I do not want to or need it. And if you really want me to buy something, invite me to your house and give me some drinks and appetizers. What do you think? Email me at beth81772@aol.com or Tweet me at BethHanning2. Have a great week everyone!

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
MS Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system and it affects more than 2 million people worldwide (over 400,000 in the U.S.). It is currently incurable. It is characterized by fully or partially reversible episodes of neurologic disability, often lasting days to weeks. Symptoms typically include loss of vision in one eye caused by optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve), limb weakness or numbness (inflammation of spinal nerves), double vision (brainstem dysfunction), and ataxia (wobbly gait due to cerebellar inflamma-
tion). After 10 to 20 years, many people with MS develop a progressive course characterized by impaired mobility and cognition while about 15 percent of patients have this progressive course from the onset of the disease. More than a dozen medications are available that reduce the frequency of neurologic flare-ups, however there are no medications that prevent or reverse the progressive neurologic impairment most commonly characterized by impaired mobility, loss of bladder control, and cognitive impairment. The annual economic cost of MS in the U.S. is about $10 billion.
The main consequence of MS is demyelination of nerves. Myelin is a protein that surrounds nerves, much like the plastic insulation on copper electrical wires. When the myelin disappears, the nerves do not function properly. More simply put, the nerves short-circuit similar to bare copper wires touching each other. The demyelination process causes protein buildups in the central nervous system. These protein build-ups are called plaques and can be seen in the brain and spinal cord by using imaging studies like MRI and CT scans. Sequential scans can follow disease progression. 150 years ago, long before scanning technologies were available, it was recognized that disseminated plaque-like sclerosis was the hallmark of MS. This was discovered by using autopsies to examine the central nervous systems of those who had MS symptoms. In addition, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of those with MS contains abnormal proteins not found in the CSF of people without MS. Three quarters of those with
The Rockaway Times MS are women, as is common in diseases that are considered autoimmune. The cause of MS is unknown although there is a familial factor. People with a first-degree relative with MS have about a 4 percent risk of developing it and identical twins have a 50 percent risk. There is an environmental factor as well as MS is more common in temperate zones as opposed to tropical zones leading to speculation that Vitamin D from sunlight plays a preventative role. Smoking, obesity, and a history of mononucleosis also lead to an increased risk of MS. Much research into treatment is ongoing with an increased focus on immunotherapies and stem cell transplants. Meaningful advances in immunology, myelin biology, and neuroscience, together with a global focus on halting progressive disability have opened the promise of better understanding of, and therapeutic attack on, multiple sclerosis. A Eulogy from Beefchip On behalf of Rockaway Beach, I want to give thanks to everyone for being here for us at this difficult time. Your thoughts and prayers have certainly gone unanswered by the Powers that be, and this abrupt and untimely fate is the end result. Beach 91st through Beach 102nd lived one hell of a life. From Bungalow Town to Playland, from Green Hot Dogs to Rockaway Taco, from Donna to Sandy, she has been through it all. Which is what makes her loss that much more difficult. She has earned her rightful place in Poseidon’s Kingdom. A reluctant survivor, she humbly rose to the occasion even though the odds were stacked against her. At the end of her life, with little to no care from those that
made the decisions on her behalf, she was neglected, even abandoned. For those of us she leaves behind, businesses, lifelong community members, fellow beaches, DFDs, we can only take solace amongst our shared memories as we weep in our endless sorrow. She gracefully gave of herself, providing endless life to those that have invested everything in her. She was the glue that kept us together. I would be remiss if I didn’t say this is going to have a devastating impact on the residents and business owners of this town. Eternal Rest Grant unto Beach 91st through Beach 102nd, and let perpetual light shine Upon Her. May She Rest In Peace, at least until the Resurrection four to ten years from now.

Tiffany was a common name in the 12th century (short for Theopania). It sounds too modern so authors and historians tend to avoid it. This is known as the Tiffany Problem. In 1795, French cavalry successfully won a naval dispute with a Dutch fleet of warships. There are more hydrogen atoms in a teaspoon of water than there are teaspoons of water in the sea.
In the 1974 NHL draft, the Buffalo Sabres drafted a fake player, Taro Tsujimoto. The GM at the time was fed up with the draft system and wanted to protest it. Including ones that no longer exist, Michael Phelps has more Summer Olympic gold medals than 80% of all countries. All pilots must learn English, the universal language of the skies. After two years of indecision after the death of Pope Nicholas V, a hermit wrote to the cardinals saying if they didn't chose a pope soon, God would be pissed. no beach sand for the Atlantic to eat? What's next when there are no sand dunes for the Atlantic to eat? We know what's next, it's our homes and our infrastructure. Who is at fault? It's tough to say and it really does not matter! It leaves one question: what can we do and where do we turn? In my opinion it's the Federal and State Government! On the federal level we need Senator Schumer to demand that the Army Corps start the Rockaway Reformulation project TODAY! On a state level, we need to demand Governor Cuomo declare our peninsula's coast lines an Emergency Disaster Area. This way we can expedite environmental reviews for all the construction which the Army Corps are planning. Please join a large scale protest for action on Sunday. Come to Beach 97th Street, on the sand (or what’s left of it) at 10 a.m. Any questions: feel free to call 516-509-8957. Senator Schumer: it's time for ACTION! (Call his office: 212486-4430). Governor Cuomo: act now! (Call his office: 518-474-8390).

mile stretch of Rockaway Beach. SHOCKER! We have been warning everyone with power to do something about our beach erosion in Rockaway Beach for decades now. It does not surprise me in the least, that the can of proper resiliency measures has been kicked down the road all these years. These current beach closures are not that much different than last year. The difference this year is, the beaches are "officially closed." Unless you lived in the Beach 90s last summer, you may not have known that Beach 91st to Beach 93rd Streets were closed to swimming and had no lifeguards, 90 percent of the beach season. What's the difference this year? It's obvious! It's a much bigger stretch of beach, now Beach 91st Street to Beach 102nd Street. So where do we go from here? Or should I say: Where does the erosion go? Only Mother Nature knows. Is it closing from Beach 91st to Beach 108th by August? Is it closing Beach 126th Street to Beach 142nd Street next summer? It's tough to say, but it's coming folks.

In Memory Of Tom Maher By Kim Maher
On Saturday, June 23, 2018, friends and family will come together once again for the annual “Day at the Races In Memory of Tom Maher.” Those that attend come to celebrate Tom’s life, share the memories they have of him and continue some of the “unfinished business” he started. The “Day at the Races” is an event that has been held each year since Tom passed away in 2009. The event is not only about the memories and the impact he made on our lives, but a way of raising funds for a scholarship founded in his name. The event is held in Belmont Park and is open to ONE AND ALL! The gathering takes place in the Marquis Tent at Belmont Park and begins at 1 p.m. The price of a ticket ($150/per person) includes: bus transportation to and from the event (buses leave Bungalow Bar on 92nd Street at 11:30 a.m.), food, beverages, music, raffle prizes, horse racing and a donation to the Thomas Maher Scholarship
at New Hyde Park Memorial High School. (For more information, please contact: Kim Maher #917-225-0019; Jean Condon #718-974-6020; Jimmy Mullen #718-938-1665) It is important to explain why we do what we do. Tom, being a life-long resident of our Rockaway community, went to school and played basketball at St. Francis de Sales, attended Monsignor McClancy High School, spent his college days at Stonybrook and later followed the path of teacher, coach and guidance counselor. After graduating with his first degree, he began his career at McClancy teaching math and coaching many of the young men from Rockaway, Breezy and Broad Channel. Seeking to help a little more, he moved over to St. Edmund Prep as a guidance counselor, still affording him the opportunity to work with many students from his own neighborhood. A few years later and another degree, this time from St. John’s

University, he began working at New Hyde Park Memorial High School (NPH) where he held the position of chairperson of pupil personnel. At NHP for eight years, he found “a home away from home” where he developed strong friendships with colleagues, students and their families. At NHP, he was responsible for a number of programs and events each year, but the most important of all and the one with which had a lasting affect on him was the Senior Awards Night every June when outstanding students are recognized for their hard work and achievements during their four years in high school. Tom was diagnosed with skin cancer in the early months of 2009 and quickly passed that same year in June. We remember him each year by presenting a four-year renewable monetary scholarship award in his memory to a well-deserved high school senior at New Hyde Park Memorial. This scholarship is one way to finish some-
thing that he started. Tom was a student, an athlete, and a hard-worker. He was someone that possessed determination, confidence and commitment, and saw the humorous side of things. He was someone that cared about his community and those around him. Above all, though, he understood the value of an education. Each year we have the honor of selecting someone that holds some of the same attributes Tom did. It is clear that we live in a world where tomorrow isn’t promised. We know we only have one life to live and that this isn’t a dress rehearsal. It suffices to say, that this town knows this better than any other town. What makes us different is “community” and within that is the support and friendships we share. Thank you to all that have helped continue what Tom started. Please join us at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 23. “We got it from here, Tom.” -Love, US

THANK YOU We would like to thank each and every one of you for your love, prayers, flowers, cards and support during this tragic time in our lives. Your outpouring of sympathy and kindness didn't go unnoticed or unappreciated and helped to ease the unimaginable pain we bear. Your loving words about our son, Brendan, were wonderfully and peacefully consoling. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Brendan and Carol Jones

Spring Cleaning: A Guide (Part II) By Adam Magnicarri
Last week, I provided Part One of a Spring Cleaning Guide. Here are the rest of my tips for cleaning and fixing up your home this spring and summer. Vacuum your refrigerator coils. I actually learned this tip from a refrigerator repairman. The fridge can use up to 15 percent of your home’s total power, so you want it running as efficiently as possible. Over time, the coils get dirty and your fridge requires more juice. You can save up to $100 a year by doing this, and it’s not at all a difficult task. Get your air conditioning sys-
tem ready for summer; consider having it serviced. This one really depends on your individual home. Some homes just use window air units, while other houses have the mini-split systems—these are fairly basic machines where a quick internet search can help you fix any issues that come up. Also, refer to the user guides for specific regular maintenance. Central air is obviously a more complex system. Getting it serviced by a professional should be around $175 or less, and it will save money and headaches down the road. Worth every penny. Repair/replace damaged window screens. You don’t want bugs making their way in
75th STREET (PARK AVE) and RBB - 1912 By Katie Lucev, mentored by Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr.
Ths was also known as “Beach 75th Street Business District.” Looking west towards Beach 116th Street, on the left is Miller’s Cabaret & Casino, Etna Hotel (arch) and White Horse Hut Restaurant. Can you see the statue of a white horse on the roof front? On the right, is Oppenheirmer’s Hotel; they called it “Opps” for short. The ground floor of Opps Hotel was “Metz & Zewperk’s Kneipe – Gambrinus Bie’re” (German/Czech: Pub – King of Beers). Adjoining was Yanowitz Department Store, they sold dry foods/goods, clothing and shoes.

because you missed a hole in a window screen. And no, duct tape doesn’t count. It can be a quick fix, but don’t leave it for long. It just looks bad. Clear dead plants/shrubs from the house. This could double as a gardening tip, but if you didn’t trim trees or shrubs in the fall, do so now. We all know how quickly weeds can grow in even the smallest cracks. I walk around my house every morning and pull whatever weeds I see. Summer is a great time to focus on the exterior of your home, as well as your lawn and garden. It’s also perfect for having that garage door open and utilizing the prolonged daylight to work on any projects that have fallen by the wayside. Inspect plumbing for leaks, clean aerators on faucets. Go around to all your faucets and toilets and check for any small leaks. If you have poor water pressure out of a faucet, the aerator is the likely culprit and is an extremely easy fix. Take care of any insect problems you may have. As I tell my kids around this time: “Only eat
The Rockaway Times at the table.” Bugs are everywhere this time of year, always trying to come in the door. If you want the cheapest screen door on the planet, take a Ziploc bag, put two cups of water and a penny in it and hang it on your door. Don’t ask me why, it just works. Clean out window wells of debris. If you have a basement, sometimes your house might have window wells. All kinds of things can get down in there from leaves to trash to animals. Check and clean dryer vents, and other exhaust vents at the exterior of your home. While the dryer is running, check that the exhaust is coming out. It should smell nicely of fresh laundry. If there isn’t much exhaust, check for blockages as well as you can. You may need a professional. Also vacuum the lint from the hose at the dryer. They make special brushes to clean these vents properly. If you have any suggestions of something to cover, or want to get in touch, send me an email at: 1soloplumbing@ gmail.com

FROM THE RBA Introducing the Lookbook - Summer 2018!
Architectural style made easy.
As part of our ongoing marketing campaign to promote businesses on the Rockaway peninsula, the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) is producing a Visual Lookbook featuring all the fabulous products, services and entertainment that Rockaway has to offer. The Lookbook will differ from other forms of advertisement and summer guides as seen previously around the peninsula. It will showcase pictures of items available at specific businesses along with a small caption, business address and/or website where you can find the item. It is a one-page (34"x24") full-color newsprint page printed on both sides and folded into eight sections. It will be distributed throughout
the peninsula at participating businesses, at the ferry landing, and other hotspots. Minimum publication will be 5,000 copies, but may be as many as 10,000 copies. Ad space is limited, and will be allotted on a first come, first served basis, as we can only fit approximately 40-50 pictures in all. Sign ups with our premiere issue automatically ensures you a spot in our Holiday 2018 Lookbook as well, should you choose to participate. You can choose to use a picture of your choice from your website, your own archives, or if needed we can photograph something for you at no charge. Pictures should be a visual representation of your establishment and/ or specialty. Let people know where to find you! With the ferry loads, train loads and car loads of visitors coming to the Rockaways this summer, this is a unique and cost-effective way to showcase your business. Earth Day Rockaway
By RWA Program Associate Daniel Borrero
Earth Month may be over, but Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (RWA) kept April’s ‘green’ spirit alive through the first Saturday in May. RWA’s Earth Day Rockaway took place this year on May 5 in the Hip-Hop Community Garden and inside the Rockaway Institute for a Sustainable Environment (RISE). RWA’s 12th Annual celebration, Earth Day Rockaway, continues to be one of our biggest events, if not the biggest, each year. This year, over 15 partner groups came out to table and host fun activities. Rockaway Artists Alliance got their hands dirty making some seed bombs, while next to them Swim Strong provided information about free swim lessons and gave out cool looking goggles. Riverhead foundation was a huge
hit again, presenting a mock dolphin rescue, and Surfrider Foundation helped kids learn how to stand on a surfboard! RWA put a new spin on the event with a variety of scheduled workshops and performances throughout the day. First up was a composting workshop with Queens Botanical Garden. Master Composter Candidate Julian McKinley led a 25-minute lesson that taught both adults and kids alike how to manage, care for, and best practices for maintaining a composting system at home. While some were squeamish of the smell, a host of kids from local PS104 picked up trowels and started chopping up food waste and browns! After the composting lesson, a slew of workshops and performances occurred inside RWA’s RISE Building. Kim Holmes from Everybody Dance Now taught a fun, hip-

hop dance routine that had kids moving, jumping, and even dabbing! Next, local double dutch team Stan’s Pepper Steppers kept the crowd in good spirits. Not only did they show off their mind-boggling stunts and jump speeds, but they also got the audience in on the action, including RWA staff members! Up next was Vinny Voltage’s Science Show. Exclamations of wonder from the audience abounded as Vinny made a cloud in a bottle and turned liquid into solid in an instant! Closing out the day was Wayne ‘Superius’ Garland’s
the smoothie bike continued to be a big hit as well. On the menu this year? Strawberry, blueberry, and banana smoothies made with almond milk. Some kale from RWA’s very own hydroponics system was also thrown in! You can’t get food more local than that. Also of interest this year was the table for the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay. Helen Cheng, Coastal Resilience Extension Specialist, conducted interviews for her Jamaica Bay Podcast series. “I got some really cool stories today. I wasn’t sure if people would be open to this
magic show. There were more dropped jaws from the audience as water disappeared before their eyes, and one-dollar bills turned into fives! While the show went on inside, tabling and activities continued outside. Participants in RWA’s Shore Corps and Environmentor programs hosted four tables themselves. Some teens were managing a plant giveaway station, while others were making UV bracelets and art with kids. Still others were managing staple activities for the organization: face painting and the infamous smoothie bike! Face painting, as per usual, had a long line throughout the day, while
but I’m so glad they were. I even got some stories from people who are excited to move to Rockaway and start a new life here,” Helen said. All in all, RWA was happy with another successful Earth Day Rockaway full of fun, laughter, and learning. Staff members are already looking forward to making next year’s event even better!

WHAT’S THE NAME OF THAT PLACE? Renowned artist, Geoff Rawling, sent us these great paintings of Rockaway establishments that have gone the way of trolleys. Some have been long gone, others fairly recently. They are presented here without names or signs. Can you identify
them? Answers on Page 46. The actual paintings (with names!) can be found on the walls of Happy Jack's, the new place opening at 108-13 Old Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

Little League Recap WET WEATHER CAN’T SPOIL EXCITEMENT By Kamin Green
Mother Nature has been trying her best to drown the Rockaway Little League spring season with the constant rain. But we've been persevering. Last week's rain wiped out the schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. That made a total of 33 rainouts this season as of this writing. Everyone at the league agrees they've never before seen a season with weather like this. But it will take more than that to stop the hardy players, coaches, parents and volunteers of Rockaway Little League. Makeup games have been scheduled during the Memorial Day weekend and the playoff schedule has been revised to fit in all the makeup games and allow for a full season. The games may have been limited in quantity this past week, but not in thrills, fun and excitement. In Minor Boys action, the Belle Harbor Yacht Club Rockies kept their hold on first place with a tight 4-1 victory over the third-place American Legion Post #272 Cardinals. The Empire Unlimited Angels kept pace in second place in another close game, 3-2 over the Bartoli Chiropractic Athletics. In the Pee Wee Sr division, the Zwerling Opthamology Orioles, Rockaway Midshipmen Fearless Z Blue Jays and Breezy Point Lumber Cardinals are locked in a tight race for first place as they are all within 1/2 game of each other. The Walsh Management Angels, Servpro of NW Brooklyn Pirates and A.O.H. Division 21 Athletics are only a few games back and poised to make a move at the top. In Major Boys action, the Denis S. O'Connor Inc. Giants continued at the top of the division with an action-packed 11-7 win over the DriveSafe Auto Center Orioles. Excitement continues in girls’ softball as the Walsh Properties Eagles and Rockaway W.I.S.H. Clippers are in a virtual tie for
first place in Minor Girls after the Eagles’ thrilling 7-6 victory over the Laquila Group Hornets. And on the Major Girls side, the second-place Graybeards Blazers had a productive week with 28-7 win over the Lola Star Pioneers and a 13-7 win over the Knights of Columbus 2672 Wildcats. But the Lana's Loft Bobcats thrilling 18-14 victory over the Blazers kept them in first place by a game. With a little over two weeks remaining in the regular season, there promises to be a lot of excitement in all the divisional races. But keep in mind that everyone makes the playoffs and they are double elimination format so all the runner-ups have an excellent chance of competing for the championship. And let's not forget all the pure joy of baseball and softball that takes place in the non-competitive divisions on field #1 at Fort Tilden. Hats off to all the players in Pee Wee Girls softball, Tee Ball and Pee Wee Jr baseball. You won't find a cuter or more joyous scene anywhere. Rockaway Little League photo day sessions, which also had to be rescheduled
