Art, Food and Beer to Boost Beach 108th & 109th By Katie McFadden
The Rockaway Beach Hotel is still a few years away, but those behind the project are already putting the space to good use, with an outdoor art gallery, food trucks and a beer garden. Instead of construction fences, a sight too familiar since Hurricane Sandy, those from In Good Company Hospitality, the owners of the Bungalow Bar and other city hotspots, are giving locals and visitors something more appetizing to the eye, and bellies. As In Good Company, one of the partners behind the future Rockaway Beach Hotel, awaits construction permits, they’re making use of the space from Beach 108th to Beach 109th Street. Starting this Memorial Day weekend, the site will be transformed into an art gallery featuring a series of murals, called the BLVD Project. Then the Dalton’s parking lot and the site of the recently razed Tubridy Hotel, will be transformed into Rockapulco,

ent ourselves,” Terence Tubridy, one of the partners from In Good Company said. “It makes sense to do something for the summer.” The colorful murals of the BLVD Project will first catch the eye of those coming off the ferry and walking towards the beach. The border fence of the construction site has been painted white, providing a blank canvas for artists of a range of abilities, to go to work. A few weeks ago, Tubridy approached In Good Company employee Tracey Greene, who serves on the board and runs the exhibitions committee for the RAA, if she could help turn, what some call the “dirty Boulevard,” around. “This project ranges from some pretty wellknown street artists from across the country, to up and coming artists, to community groups that are all working to beautify the community and really eliminate that nickname of the ‘dirty Continued on page 36

Cars For Kids It was divine intervention. I’d dropped out of college, then traveled cross country with a buddy on Amtrak. We got to Los Angeles and the weather was nice. A TV weatherman seemed to have the easiest job in town. He said it was sunny and 75 today — as it has been for a thousand years. Of course, the only thing warmer than the weather were the girls. We soon realized the key to enjoying this paradise was securing a car. We bought a Dodge Dart with 139,000 miles on it (which was a crazy number in those days) for $350 dollars. I think we paid part of it in traveler’s checks. A pale green Dodge Dart was going to make us irresistible to the Hollywood babes. Neither one of us knew you had to get auto insurance. We thought it was optional, I guess – like, you only had to get insurance if the car was decent. We
drove to Motor Vehicles to get California drivers’ licenses and register the car. That’s when we learned about needing insurance. We left with new licenses and our still-unregistered car. We spent all that dough on the new ride and now we were facing the insurance expense. To save cash, we slept in the car that night in some beachfront parking lot. The next day we were driving to check out a place to live near Hollywood which sounded cool but was no less seedy than Times Square back then. We never made it. The Dodge Dart died. The piece of crap just stopped, spewing steam into air, causing a traffic jam on Wilshire Boulevard, one of the main streets of Beverly Hills. My friend, TH, and I stood there like Jed Clampett and Jethro Bodine with our steaming pile of junk, as cars more in character with Beverly Hills, inched past us. A Maserati passed, then a Porshe, then a Bentley. We blended like Cousin Vinny.
Divine intervention occurred when two commercials played on the car radio – the only thing still working on the otherwise dead Dodge Dart. The first was a “we buy junk cars” and the second was “fly one way to San Francisco” for $19. We pushed the Dodge Dart to the curb and found a payphone nearby – ha, imagine that, a payphone. We called the junkyard and a guy came and paid us $75 for the car. We took that cash and headed for the airport. Why San Francisco? We heard it had good public transportation. The memory of that Dodge Dart came back when I was considering if I was gonna invest in a used car for the son who will remain nameless. Things are different now. So different. In the old days, you couldn’t wait to get your license. Now? Kids prefer Uber, what do they need a license for? In the old days, you’d kill to have your own clunker. Now? Kids won’t lower themselves to drive anything but the newest model (fat

chance that’s happening with my kid). We learned how to fix flat tires, jump dead batteries, and didn’t mind seeing the road pass under our feet in somebody’s car that didn’t have floorboards. Some cars wouldn’t start unless three or four guys pushed the thing for 50 feet until the engine turned over. I had a car in which the passenger door didn’t open and another with windshield wipers that would only work if the car was going 50 mph or more. You’d have to throw the thing into neutral and gun the engine to get the wipers going in slower traffic. You learned. Often the hard way. Now? You have to decide if letting the kid start with a piece of junk will be good for him. He’ll learn, like you did. But nah, he’s already learned what to do. When the car breaks down he’ll just call you. Then what? It’s your clunker. Maybe that newer car for the kid isn’t such a bad idea…

Completed Boardwalk to Open This Weekend

The boardwalk is back. It’s been nearly five years since Hurricane Sandy tore apart the beloved backbone of the Rockaway community. But it has finally made a full return. It no longer bares the wood that provided that classic rumble as you rode along by bike, that feeling of nostalgia, and even the not-so-appreciated splinters, but the new concrete structure provides the strength to face the force of Mother Nature, and a pathway connecting one end of the peninsula to the other once again. Calling it by another name is a personal choice, but the Rockaway Boardwalk has returned, putting another nail in the coffin of a storm that tried hard to knock the peninsula down, but lost against a community willing to come back better than ever. By Memorial Day Weekend, the last piece of the puzzle will be complete. Some may say the boardwalk was back by last summer, as the full length was continuous from Beach 9th to Beach 126th by July 4th last year. However, there was still work to be done. The wood withstood Sandy for much of the section from Beach 19th to Beach 39th Street. However, after the last summer season, construction commenced to remove the remaining warped wooden pieces and replace it with the concrete that now makes up the entire length of the boardwalk, providing better protection for the peninsula, and a uniform look. On October 29, 2012, as most residents remember, since they wound up with pieces of
it strewn down their streets and driveways, most of the old boardwalk fell victim to Sandy. At the end of 2012, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that there would be no more wooden boardwalks built in Rockaway, or anywhere in the city. Work was done quickly to make way for a successful first beach season following the storm. By the summer of 2013, “boardwalk islands” were constructed and opened near the concessions and other busy areas, like Beach 86th, Beach 97th, Beach 106th and Beach 116th. In 2014, the Parks Department and the NYCEDC partnered up and awarded Skanska the contract to finish the rest of the boardwalk project. By April of that year, construction began and Rockaway got its first feel of the new boardwalk when the first section, from Beach 86th to Beach 97th Street opened by Memorial Day 2015. By July of that year, Beach 97th to Beach 106th Street was open, giving Rockaway a mile of continuous boardwalk, and boosting morale and tourism. The beach saw an unprecedented seven million visitors that summer. After the summer, work continued and the section from Beach 73rd to Beach 86th Street was opened ahead of schedule, in February 2016, and Beach 39th to Beach 73rd opened before Memorial Day. The news of an early opening was well received, that is, until it was announced that the stretch from Beach 108th to Beach 126th Street, wasn’t going to meet the Memorial Day deadline due to citywide construction constraints after a massive crane fell in Manhattan. That stretch wasn’t open until almost July 4, 2016. However, that opening marked the first time that the boardwalk was continuous since Sandy. With the last bit of construction now complete, the full boardwalk, adorned with benches, a bike lane, and blue concrete spelling out ROCKAWAY, is brand new and once

again stretches 5.5 miles. At that length, some may argue that Rockaway’s boardwalk is as long as the “longest boardwalk in the world”—the 5.5-mile Atlantic City Boardwalk. However, the concrete promenade may detract from claiming the title of being the longest “boardwalk.” On May 19, Mayor Bill de Blasio came to Rockaway to check out the work that has been done on the $341 million project. With the boardwalk completion coinciding with the return of the ferry, the Mayor expects 2017 to be a great year for the peninsula. “This is going to be the Summer of the Rockaways. The millions who come to the boardwalk by bus, bike and ferry will see the Rockaways’ resilience and vibrancy in action,” Mayor de Blasio said. “The boardwalk is proof of our commitment to building back stronger and better.” During his tour, the Mayor spoke about how the new boardwalk will serve as a protective barrier for the peninsula. “This boardwalk is going to help protect everything you see around it. The school over there, and all these homes. This boardwalk is not just a boardwalk, it’s now a barrier wall to protect the communities of the Rockaways. It was built to be resilient,” he

said. “The last boardwalk was literally thrown by the waves into the streets of the Rockaways. This boardwalk’s not going anywhere. This boardwalk is planted firmly and it will withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at it.” The mayor also made the announcement that the project was completed under budget— by $120 million. “$120 million that’s now going to be used for other important resilience projects, here, in the Rockaways. That’s an amazing contribution to continuing to make these communities safe,” de Blasio said. The fences around the last section of boardwalk are scheduled to come down by the time the beaches open on Saturday. Next time you hear a politician say they are for lower taxes, keep in mind they just mean to kill you with fees. There’s a red light camera right outside Rockaway on the Nassau Expressway in the Five Towns shopping area. A driver goes through as the light changes to red and the dreaded camera snaps. The fine is $50. But that’s not enough. Nassau County adds a $45 “Driver Responsibility Fee” (how is that different than the fine!). So that’s $95. But wait, there’s more! There is a “Public Safety Fee” charge of $55 as well. That’s $150 for a red light violation. And there is a $6 convenience fee if you want to pay online. Convenient for whom?! Oh, and pay after the due date if you’d like to pay more.

Crisis At Hand Dear Editor: During the period from the end of April until May 9 my mother was struggling with cellulitis and several other issues. Mom was 92 years old. The first time she was sent to St. John’s Hospital in Far Rockaway, it took six hours to get her out of the Emergency Room and into a regular room. The second time, which was on May 8, it took nine hours. I can tell you that the staff at St. John’s was professional and gave Mom the treatment she
needed from the very beginning. What I found out that day was that without the dedicated nursing staff and doctors who work there, it would have been a disaster. There were gurneys all over the hallways of the emergency room. Doctors and nurses ran from area to area giving treatment and giving us information about Mom’s condition. They were totally outnumbered and I have no idea how they could remember who got which treatment. Ambulance crews were standing around because their patients were still on the ambulance gurneys since there were no beds available at the hospital. When Mom got to a room at 10:30 p.m., we found out that there were almost no beds available at the hospital and that ambulances were supposed to be diverted to other hospitals. What scares me is that we have high rises being built in the Mott Avenue area, on Beach 116th Street, and Arverne By The Sea is a beauti-

ful new neighborhood that is now being expanded into a section of nice rentals as well. We have a great ferry service bringing more tourists to the area. Many fall in love with the area and rent or buy places to live. This is great for Rockaway and Queens. It is also great for the New York City economy. So where is the expansion of infrastructure needed to support the population growth? We are isolated on a peninsula, have a growing population and since the demise of Peninsula Hospital, we are limited to one overcrowded hospital that cannot handle the caseload on a regular Monday. God knows what it would be like if we had a real disaster or emergency situation. Even without a disaster or an emergency situation I would like to believe that my 92-year-old mother, and others like her, deserve to die with the same dignity and respect that they lived their lives. The best hospital staff in the world can’t offer that
if they are inundated with patients. We deserve better in the Rockaways. All of us. The elderly, children and any patient with a medical emergency. I know that our local representatives have appealed for better medical services for our community, but I can tell you that judging from my recent experience we cannot wait. We are already in crisis. What we desperately need is a second hospital to replace Peninsula. I hope that you, our elected officials can figure out a way to bring our community the adequate care that we all deserve. Following the 1924 sale, the VFW believed it would stimulate local sales if the poppies they used were assembled by disabled veterans in hospitals within their own jurisdiction. The 1924 encampment of the VFW at Atlantic City granted this privilege, under the provision that all poppies would be produced according to specifications set forth by the National Buddy Poppy Committee, and that all poppies would be assembled by disabled veterans in government hospitals and by needy veterans in workshops supervised by the VFW. Around the same year, the American Legion Auxiliary also adopted the poppy as the organization's memorial flower and pledged its use to benefit our servicemen and their families. Today, the poppy continues to provide a financial and therapeutic benefit to those hospitalized and disabled veterans who construct them, as well as benefiting thousands of other veterans and their families. As you are standing on Cross Bay Boulevard watching the Broad Channel Memorial Day Parade this Sunday afternoon and a veteran hands you a "Buddy Poppy," take some time to reflect on the history of this practice which, unfortunately, is all too often forgotten by many of us. The veteran is symbolically passing a torch (in the form of a red poppy ) for you to wear and display as a means of "keeping faith with" (remembering and honoring) those veterans who have died in service to all the people of this great nation on this special day. THE SHIFT By Kathy Pastina
Have you ever had one of those AHA moments that Oprah has talked about? Wayne Dyer, an American philosopher and spiritual guru who recently passed in 2015, had them too, except he called them quantum moments where a shift in your heart, mind and soul happens. It’s like the trifecta of human consciousness and this is where they say miracles can happen. Anytime there is a shift in our perception it removes the veil of fear, guilt and hate in the mind, giving us a short, sweet glimpse of the timeless peace and joy we are born into, and which is our rightful inheritance. Wayne Dyer was a professor at St. John’s University here in Queens. He was up for the coveted tenured position there
when he decided to leave, although it went against all common sense and advice from family and friends. He followed his inner voice, which led him to write “Your Erroneous Zones” in 1976 and became one of the top best selling books of all time! He went on to write many books and became a motivational speaker. You can still view him on public television helping millions of people with his soulful and inspiring words. He often spoke about how a shift in his perception created a profound healing in his life. He acknowledges it was a quantum moment that created this healing. His father was an abusive alcoholic and his mother, unable to care for the family, brought him and his two brothers to an orphanage in Detroit where they eventually ended up in foster care. Bounced around and then reunited with his mother, he grew up having a deep hatred
for his father who abandoned him after he was born. It permeated every aspect of his life. It takes a lot of energy and work to hold on to that level of hate. By the age of 34, with this deep hatred in his heart, he found his father’s grave in Biloxi, Mississippi where he stood for three hours stomping, crying and spitting on the grave. As he walked away, he suddenly felt the hatred lift… something had come over him and he felt such great love and compassion that he was able to say to his father, “From this moment on I send you love, and I forgive you for everything that you have done, you are my teacher.” When he walked away from his father’s grave that very day his life began to change. No longer carrying the shackles of hate, his light shown forth. His quantum moment, his shift, his miracle, had forever changed his life. Wayne made a film called “The Shift” that you can
view through Hay House. It is worth the viewing. Forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves. It does not make us weak or condone the behavior of the offender but releases us to embrace ourselves. Learning to make peace when life gives us sour grapes is a quantum moment, a miracle, allowing us to heal, bringing light and love at new levels into our life. Mark Twain wrote, “Forgiveness is the fragrance that the violet sheds on the heel that has crushed it.” A loving-kindness meditation to help on this journey goes like this: May I be filled with loving-kindness May I be safe from inner and outer dangers May I be well in body and mind May I be at ease and happy Then spread the love and say it for another person, our community, our country, and the world. Hemoglobin Alc Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a common and practical measure of average glucose (blood sugar) levels during the preceding three to four months. It is used both to diagnose diabetes and to measure diabetic control. Hemoglobin A comprises 97 percent of the hemoglobin found in normal red blood cells. HbA1c is a subtype of Hemoglobin A to which glucose binds permanently. The higher the amount of glucose in the blood, the higher the level of HbA1c will be. The average lifespan of a normal red blood cell is 90 to 120 days, which is why HbA1c will measure glucose levels over that period of time. Diseases that affect Hemoglobin and/or red blood cells may affect the measurement of HbA1c. Take, for example, sickle cell disease (SCD) and sickle cell trait (SCT). Both are genetic diseases that cause Hemoglobin A to be replaced by Hemoglobin S in red blood cells. SCD requires two abnormal, or altered, genes while SCT requires one abnormal gene. A child born of parents who both have SCT has a high likelihood of having SCD. SCT is fairly common, affecting eight to ten percent of black people but less than one percent of white people. The red blood cells in individuals with SCT contain 60 to 70 percent hemoglobin A and 30 to 40 percent Hemoglobin S. Hemoglobin S causes red blood cells to be deformed. It also causes these red blood cells to be removed from circulation by the spleen earlier than the 90 to 120 days that normal red blood cells live. Therefore it has been postulated that because SCT
causes red blood cells to contain less Hemoglobin A and the cells to last a shorter time in circulation, levels of HbA1c in those with SCT may be artificially lower than they really are. A recent study done at Brown University set out to prove this theory. While other smaller studies have shown no correlation between SCT and levels of HbA1c, the Brown study was a large study that had an unusually high percentage of participants with SCT (28 percent). They measured not just HbA1c levels but did twohour glucose tolerance tests on the study volunteers. What they found was that there was indeed a connection between SCT and artificially lower levels of HbA1c. The authors suggested that HbA1c may systematically underestimate elevated glucose levels and rates of diabetes in black people with SCT. The findings of this study may partly explain why the prevalence of diabetes in the black community is higher than the population in general. It may also explain why the rates of diabetic complications are higher in black people. Of course more research is needed but perhaps if black patients do not know whether or not they have SCT they should be routinely tested for it and, if positive, other ways of testing for and monitoring diabetes should be considered. “Directly on the Atlantic Ocean, and lapped by the placid waters of Jamaica Bay, The Rockaways lie just 20 miles from New York City. With a three-mile boardwalk along the beach shorefront, this summer destination is famed
for its surf bathing. The Rockaways also offer a famous million-dollar amusement park called ‘Rockaway’s Playland’. This 13-mile peninsula also has many facilities for fishing in still bay waters or the deep sea.” This memorial narrative is printed on the back of this post card.
Serves: 4 Ingredients: One 4 to 5 pound brisket 1 packet onion soup mix 1 can jellied cranberries 1 to 1 1/2 cups beef broth 1/8 cup water, if needed 2 tablespoons of brown sugar (this is optional, we like things on the sweeter side) 5 to 6 carrots, peeled and kept whole 1 small onion sliced (optional) Gravy Thickener: 1/8 cup cold water 2 tablespoons cornstarch Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees 2. Rinse the brisket in cold water, place in pan along with the carrots. (I use the large, deep aluminum pans. I just throw them away when I’m done) 3. In a glass bowl, mix the soup

mix, cranberries, and beef broth. You can taste and see if you want to add the sugar. Pour mixture over the brisket, lay the carrots on both sides and onion if using and cover tightly with tin foil and bake for about two hours. Take out and mix the sauce around and over the brisket. If the liquid is not thick like gravy, add the cold water and whisk in the cornstarch. Pour around the liquid in the pan and whisk it in so you don’t see white from the cornstarch. Place back in the oven for another 15 minutes until the liquid boils. Take out of the oven, uncover and let the brisket sit about 10 minutes. It should look like it’s going to fall apart. Slice up and serve with potatoes or rice.

Wine Glass Caddy By Artie Wallace
At our next DIYer class I will be recommending this little delight as our first class project. What better way to set up for a nice evening for two than with a nice bottle of wine, and what better way to serve it than with the wine glass caddy that you made. This little delight is one of the easier DIYer projects. Here is how to make it: 1 - You will need a piece of wood 12 inches long by 6 inches wide. I recommend using a soft pine, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to work with and will last when sealed properly. 2 - Round the ends (if desired) using a jig saw or coping saw. 3 - Sand the edges to a slight curve using sandpaper or a sanding sponge.
4- Cut a 2-inch hole in the center and two 1-inch holes about 1-inch in from each end using a hole saw (attaches to a drill or drill press). 5 - Using your jig/coping saw, cut a ½-inch groove from the outer edge to the 1-inch hole on each end. You can slightly round the edges to give it a more finished look. 6 - Stain your wine glass caddy using a stain color of your liking. It is best to use a stain that has a sealer in it. 7 - Apply two coats of clear coat (spray on or brush on). Be sure to allow it to dry thoroughly between coats. Flavonoids found in dark chocolate can reduce skin damage and even increase circulation and hydration in the skin, helping to give skin a healthy glow. Kiwis - Kiwis, and other fruits like strawberries and oranges, have loads of vitamin C, which not only protects you from free radicals, but can also help reduce how badly you burn. Omega-3s - Found in nuts, seeds and fatty fish, these fatty acids have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Research has found that omega-3s can help protect against sun damage and can reduce the risk of certain skin cancers. Red Bell Peppers- Just half a cup of red bell peppers has all your daily vitamin C needs. Studies have shown that eating a diet high in vitamin C can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and ease dry skin. Also reach for kale, broccoli and tomatoes. Boulevard,’” Greene said. “We want to beautify these blocks that will be under construction and make use of the thoroughfare from the ferry to the beach.” The muralists will include upand-coming artists from around the world, plus groups from local schools and art programs. Some include Cern Cernesto, John Westbay (Westgard), Magda Love, local artist Geoff Rawling, students from the Waterside school, and Greene and Judith Wanderer of the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Eight artists will get to work starting on Saturday, May 27. There will be a total of about 20 artists painting murals of 8 x 10 and larger along the perimeter of the border fence until mid-June. “We’re looking for this to be an open air gallery, where people can walk around the entire square block and look at each artwork. It will really create that feeling that you’re looking at art and not just graffiti on a construction site,” Greene said.
THURSDAY, MAY 25, 2017 “People are walking past this site every day and we really want to take pride in our community. Why not make it enjoyable? Why do we have to walk by constant construction sites, especially since the hurricane? This says that there’s something coming here, and until then, there’s this really awesome thing that people can see now,” Greene said. Greene says she was excited to help with the project as soon as she was asked. “I’ve lived in Rockaway and I want the best for this community. It’s really important to spread art throughout the community, not just at the galleries in Fort Tilden. We have some really great shows up there and it’s starting to pick up and we want to run with this momentum and spread it elsewhere. We don’t want hundreds of people getting off the ferry and looking at the dirty boulevard. We want them to look at it and say this is a really interesting, amazing community,” she said. The BLVD Project will peak the curiosity of locals and visitors and draw them closer, where
inside, they’ll find even more goodies. Rockapulco will be a beer garden featuring various food trucks, including Dalton’s Shore Shack. There will be picnic tables, ping-pong tables and yard games, plus the potential for events such as a country music festival. “It’s just going to be a nice place to chill,” Tubridy said. “It’ll be nice for the bungalow residents in the area and if people miss the ferry and have to wait an hour, they can walk back up and block and grab a drink and a bite to eat.”
The Rockaway Times The BLVD Project and Rockapulco will bring more attention to other businesses in the ferry area like Boardwalk Bagels, Healy’s Pub and Coastal Frozen Yogurt. Rockapulco will be open on weekends from about noon until nighttime. It could be open as soon as Memorial Day weekend, but final touches, like covering the dirt of the lot, could set the opening back. In the meantime, there are other new options for locals and visitors to get their beer garden fix. Liquid Bread, the beer garden neighboring the Community House on Beach 101st Street, is ready for its soft opening this weekend. It will be open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. this Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Liquid Bread will have picnic tables, a bocce ball court, its own menu of pub grub and more. “There will be millions of people visiting Rockaway and there’s plenty of business to go around. There should be even more places for people to go. Literally everyone empty lot in Rockaway should have something going on,” Tubridy said.

What better way to build awareness about the dire needs of local youth, by engaging local communities of all faiths, with the NYPD’s help — than by hosting a Community Beach Day? Reverend Dave Allen, pastor of Arverne’s Bethel African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, in conjunction with the 100th Precinct’s Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCO), hosted Rockaway’s first Interfaith Alliance Community Beach Day, on Sunday, May 20 between Beach 95th and 97th Streets. “Two years ago, I assumed the pastorship at Bethel A.M.E. on Beach 77th Street. What I wanted to do was start an interfaith alliance, where the local churches and people of all faiths, along with the police department, would get together to plan and participate in community events, with the sole aim of scaffolding
local youth to engage in positive activities that would boost their confidence and desire to aim high,” Pastor Allen said. While the weather wasn’t balmy, the Interfaith Alliance's Community Beach Day had a great turnout. Bethel A.M.E.’s congregants brought tons of food, and the 100th Precinct’s NCOs facilitated games for the children such as tug-of-war, sack races and an impressive rock-climbing wall. The 100th Precinct NCOs also had booths disseminating information to locals on how to register and report stolen property such as bicycles, report domestic violence, and a drug overdose and prevention unit, the latter, which according to 100th Precinct NCO’s Sergeant Julieann Stapleton, is rampant in the community. “Drug overdose among residents is serious and needs to be addressed by both family

members and the community as a whole. This event was significant because we wanted everyone to know that we are here for them, whatever affliction they are facing. However, we wanted this to be a fun event for local youth and adults alike. It was great because not only did everyone have fun, especially with the rock-climbing wall, but also with the tug-of-war competitions on the beach. “So many negative, false attractions face the community’s youth on a daily basis. It was great to see all ages, really embrace Bethel A.M.E. and the 100th Precinct. We want Rockaway residents to know, the 100th Precinct is here for all of you, and we are here to address your concerns.
We are all in this together,” Sergeant Stapleton said. Reverend Allen said, “My objective is to galvanize the community, and continue this joint effort between locals and the police department. Controlling Distance in Putting By Kelley Brooke
Most three putts occur, not because you hit the ball off line, but because you had no feel for distance with the first putt. The goal of the first putt is to make it, of course, but if you miss the putt you want to leave yourself with an 18inch putt coming back. There are many ways to gain a feel for the greens. For example, when I practice putting long putts, I watch the hole instead of the ball. Our bodies are like computers. Our eyes, the keyboard, enter the information. Our arms and shoulders (the hard drive) carry out the func-
tion. If you practice with your eyes on the hole, your body will eventually find the correct distance. Perhaps the best rule for putting is simple math. So many times I see beginners and intermediate players standing 10 feet from the hole and blow it by five to six feet. For golfers that truly have no concept of distance control, I give this tip: for every foot of a putt that you have, take the putter back one inch. So if you are three feet from the hole, take the putter back three inches. If you are 10 feet from the hole, take the putter back 10 inches. Now this is not an exact rule. Ad-
justments need to be made for uphill and downhill putts, but
this is a good general rule. Get out there and prac-
tice with a purpose and no more than 31 putts in your next round of golf!

Detachable Fuel Tanks By Chris Boyle
I know what you’ll be doing this weekend. Or at least I know what you THINK you’ll be doing this weekend. As the warm weather finally breaks, you THINK you will be heading out into the great outdoors to catch up on all the yardwork that’s been accumulating since late fall (and that includes finally taking in the plastic pumpkins that the neighbors have been ridiculing since New Year’s Day). You’ll drag out the rake and give a quick pass over all the detritus that somehow has nested on your lawn over the winter (including that missing copy of The Rockaway Times from March 23). You will be ambitious and decide that after all the spring rain, the flora has gotten a little out of hand and you’re going to break out the ol’ weed whacker and have a whack at those annoying sprouts from
the rubber supply lines from the fuel tank, so they will likely be gummy trash. Bottom line: you won’t be whackin’ anyone’s weeds this weekend. As you head to Home Depot for a replacement (once you discover that the repairman will charge you about the same amount to fix the old one) you’ll be thinking, “There must be a better way.” And there is…or will be if my idea is implemented. We need detachable fuel tanks. Currently, most homeowners have a two or five-gallon red gas container shoved into some godforsaken corner of their garage, for who knows how long, waiting to refill the snow blower, the leaf blower, the pressure washer, and of course, the weed whacker. The problem is these machines all have fuel tanks of no more than half a gallon, and they’re used in different seasons. And no one wants
hell. You’re actually looking forward to it a little. You’ll grab the intrepid Toro out of the shed and be initially impressed with yourself that there’s fresh cutting cord on the spool. You will flash a tiny self-satisfied grin as you see that there’s even a half tank of gas in the reservoir (ominous music plays in the background). You’ll enthusiastically tug at the ripcord in joyful anticipation of the angry buzzing of the motor that will soon spell doom for your dandelions. Then you will tug again. And again. Nothing. The whacker is totally out of whack. Anyone who’s watched at least three episodes of This Old House knows what the problem will be (louder ominous music): bad gas. You left the tank half full five months ago and gas goes bad after about 90 days. Especially ethanol-laced gas. And the gas has the added unpleasant effect of corroding
to lug the whole machine down to Exxon. So we fill that five-gallon container at our local station and save it for all the devices. The gas sits in that container, as well as each machine’s fuel reservoir, for multiple months and seasons. If every fuel tank was easily detachable they could be emptied after each use. Keep an extra five-gallon gas container around for the waste fuel, which could be returned to a NYC SAFE Disposal event annually. Or the detachable tank could even be brought to the gas station and filled there. Alternate solution: if each gas cap had movable dials that could be set to the exact date in which fresh gas had been added, you would at least know when it’s time to empty the tank and add fresh fuel. The only problem is that after all that yardwork, it’ll be your back that’s out of whack!

A Love for the Ages

This is the story of two people who share a love and a bond that is truly incomparable. Their names are Richard and MaryLou Raaf and they are my grandparents. Papou (Greek for Grandpa) and YiaYia (Greek for grandma) have been happily married for 65 years. They have one son, my dad, Rich Raaf who married Laura Martin, my mom. They also have two grandchildren, my younger sister Ashley and myself. Early in his life Richard spent most of his childhood in and out of boys homes in Brooklyn. He played football at St. Francis Prep and went on to put himself through several months of college at the University of North Carolina before he enlisted with the Marine Corps, where he saw plenty of action in North Korea as a spotter for naval gunfire. Richard had many teammates and friends down in the Rockaways where he met the beautiful MaryLou Bacalles, a lifetime resident, on the beach. MaryLou spent years as a nurse, which some of you in the neighborhood may recognize her from. Their first introduction came from MaryLou’s mother, Helen, who I know as Nana. The year was 1950 and the event was a social gathering held by their dear friend Mary McDonald. After a lot of stolen glances, and Nana playing matchmaker, the stage was set. A few days after meeting
Richard, MaryLou was walking on Rockaway Beach Boulevard when a bus with a young man waving at her from the window passed by- it was Rich. He was home from school, planning to join the Marine Corps. It was just the start of the Korean War and MaryLou’s brothers, Peter and Eddie, were enlisted so she was interested in Richard’s thoughts and feelings towards the war and wanted to get to know him more. It also didn’t hurt that he was what they called “a looker” those days. Time passed, about three months I’m told, and Rich came home on a two-week leave before heading out for further training at a San Diego base. They spent every day together, going to dinner, the movies and car rides (which was a big thing to do apparently). Their first kiss happened within this time and they both still talk about it to this day. I will spare you all the details. On the last day of his leave, Nana, her friend Mary and MaryLou drove Richard to the airport. He wanted some time alone with MaryLou before leaving so he took her up to the Observation Deck where he proposed marriage for the first time. MaryLou was shocked! But only after two weeks together he knew that she was the love of his life. Her response? “I’m not saying yes and I’m not saying no, let’s see where this takes us.” Ladiestake notes. Eventually Rich was sent to Hawaii and MaryLou received proposal number two, which you’d think would be it right? Well after many heartfelt letters in between, came the final proposal — lucky number three. MaryLou got on a plane for the first time and traveled across the country to finally marry her love rather than wait for his return. The two were married on the island of Oahu, Hawaii on October 14, 1951, and the rest is history. My grandparents’ life together after the war and their marriage was filled with only happy memories. Times were occasionally hard, but they never told us any of the bad

stuff. We only hear the stories about how they opened their home to my father’s college buddies on weekends, hosted parties for all their friends with a tight budget and attended every game my father played at C.W. Post as a center for the football team. My sister and I have many childhood memories with them in it. To the sleepovers, tea parties, birthdays and holidays — they never missed a thing. Papou even coached both of us and probably half the neighborhood for many years at (St. John's Football, St. Camillus and St. Francis de Sales for the Catholic Youth Organization. He truly loved to coach and it became his passion after he retired from his engineering job out in Connecticut. Our friends consider them their family, our teammates con-
sider them their biggest fans. I wanted to share this story because their love is one of a kind and should not only be remembered, but also celebrated. It has taught us to never take things for granted, always smile and give what you can to who needs it. These are things I was raised on, by them and through them. Their continued love, respect and support they show to each other every day is not only inspiring, but has helped shape my sister and I into the women we are today. I am more than grateful to call them my grandparents and to have them still and always be by our side. Family truly is the greatest gift and even though times have changed, their love has not. RED STORM PERFECT SO FAR; BOYS PENNANT RACES HEAT UP The Red Storm reached a league-best 10-0 in Minor Girls Softball with two victories last week while all three pennant races in the boys’ baseball divisions remained tight. Eight was almost enough for Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm last Tuesday when the Paul’s Bike Shop Gators nearly ended their perfect season. The Storm squeaked out a 9-8 victory to reach 9-0 on the season. The Bartoli squad got a pair of big triples from Carly Intrabartolo and Mary Doyle. Up-and-coming Niamh Tubridy rapped a couple of clutch singles late in the game, putting the winning run on base in the one-run thriller. There was strong pitching by Nora Tubridy and Delaney Somerville. On Sunday, the Red Storm made it a perfect 10-0 with a less nerve-wracking win over the
McManus Mechanical Huskies. There were some nice hits from the Tubridy sisters, Naimh and Nora, as well as from Katherine Rudolph who has been hitting stronger as the season continues. Some great defensive plays were made by Delaney Somerville at first base and a big catch by Nora Tubridy. The game started off with a nice single to right field by Riley Mills and a couple of nice hits by second grader Grace Hall. The balanced attack led to a 14-4 victory. The Major Girls division also has a powerful front runner, the Graybeards Hilltoppers at 9-0-1. Meanwhile, the races are tighter in hardball. In Major Boys, two games separate the front-running Drive Safe Auto Center Rockies (5-3) and the fifth place American Legion Reds (3-5). Three teams are effectively tied at

3-3. Pee Wee Seniors is a twoteam race with three teams in a tight contest for third place. On Sunday, the Currans Meats Orioles (6-1-1) –who had been chasing the Pico Mariners (72-1) all season– slipped into first place with an 11-5 win over their pennant rivals. Minor Boys is the most contested division in RLL, with seven teams still in contention for the regular season crown. The Wave Publishing Giants took a step back toward the pack with an 8-3 loss to the Shannon Florist Rockies and an 8-8 tie against the Stop & Shop Mariners but still lead the division at 6-2-2. The second place Slices and Ices Orioles (64) also stumbled, falling 15-10 to the third place Empire Unlimited A’s (5-5). In game action, the Laquila Group Reds battled to a 6-6 tie with the Mahoney Real Estate
Royals. For the Royals, Dean Esposito hit a single and a triple to extend his hitting streak to seven games while Jonathan Lazo’s streak reached nine games on the strength of an RBI double. Joseph Esposito also doubled and drove in two runs. Connor McElhinney (5 Ks), Logan Monahan (3 Ks) and Ben Gressel (5 Ks) shared the mound duties. DIAMOND DUST: Tickets are still available for RLL Night at the Cyclones.
