Happy Ferryversary! Rockaway Boat Hits One-Year Mark By Katie McFadden

One year in and the boat is still afloat. Happy first anniversary to the Rockaway ferry! On May 1, 2017, the boats of the new citywide ferry service launched on their maiden voyages on the Rockaway and East River routes. For those in Rockaway, having the return of the ferry was much welcomed. The ferry has had its ebbs and flows over the past year but it seems the consensus is that Rockaway loves the commute by boat, as does much of the city. The launch of the Rockaway ferry route, which goes to and from Rockaway, making a stop at Sunset Park, Brooklyn and ending at Pier 11 near Wall Street, saw 1,828 riders on day one. A year later, representatives from NYC Ferry tell us the Rockaway route has seen approximately 640,400 riders in

its first year of service. Locals got a taste of ferry life following Hurricane Sandy, after the A train was damaged and a transportation alternative was a necessity. However, after several extensions, the service operated by Seastreak came to an end. However, in 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio promised to bring it back as part of a citywide ferry service system. And on May 1, 2017, Rockaway saw that promise kept when the first boat, now operated by Hornblower, left the dock at Beach 108th at 5:30 a.m.

The service, at just $2.75 per ride, introduced brand new 149-passenger vessels complete with a bathroom, bike racks, indoor and outdoor seating, outlets to keep those devices charged for the ride, and a snack bar serving unique treats, coffee, and beer and wine. In its first year of service, the city has seen the launch of four ferry routes, with East River and Rockaway being the first, the South Brooklyn route launching in June 2017 and the Astoria route being added in August 2017. The first year has been a wild ride, literally, but it seems that learning from the not-so-great aspects will open the service up to an even brighter future. One of the biggest challenges was seen during the Rockaway ferry’s first summer season. The city had been warned about large summer crowds,

but only boats with a capacity of 149-people were added to system. After seeing several examples of people being left behind at docks and having to charter boats from other companies to pick up the slack, the phrase, “We’re gonna need a bigger boat,� became apparent. The stats also supported that phrase. By July 26, between the East River, South Brooklyn and Rockaway routes, the service hit the milestone of serving one million riders. With all four routes, in its first year, NYC Ferry served more than three million riders, surpassing initial projections by 34 percent or nearly 800,000 riders. It seems the city is aiming to right that wrong of insufficient capacity going forward. Small World And The Big Stadium By John Sica

My daughter-in-law Liz gave me the best compliment recently when she said she is going to be more like me, in that I talk to everyone I meet and make friends easily. A few days later, we were going out to breakfast by their new home in Babylon at a great little diner named Glen’s Dinette. Since there was a 30-minute wait, she offered to wait while my son, my two grandsons and I went over to the local surf shop, Bungers, to kill some time. The couple behind the counter was very nice. I mentioned that I just got back from Rincon, Puerto Rico because I knew the shop was started by the legendary surf board shaper Charlie Bunger, who now lives down in Rincon. “That’s my father!” Theresa informed us. Her husband Ray noticed my son’s Yankees jacket and

asked if we were Yankees fans. As it turns out, he wrote a children’s book called “One Last Time,” a baseball fantasy about the legends of the Yankees coming back to play a final game together at the old stadium before it is closed. Ray gave my grandsons a free

copy of the book that they will cherish for years to come. I mentioned that the Yankees have a day game Thursday that I was thinking of going to. “Who you going to go with?” Ray inquired. “My daughter Trish, we go to a lot of games together.”

“Write down your name and phone number,” Ray said as he passed me a pen and paper. “I’ll get you tickets, just go to will call when you get to the stadium.” Wow. I just met Ray and Theresa and he gave my grandsons a book, and me and Trish tickets to the game. Who was this special man? I was about to find out. There was another book behind the counter called “Yankee Miracles.” I inquired about that book and sure enough, Ray wrote that one too. I told him I’d like to buy a copy and as I read it I learned what a special man Ray is. If you get a chance, pick up a copy. The book tells the true story of Ray Negron, who as a young 17-year-old in the early 1970’s, cut out of school and was spray painting graffiti on the walls of Yankee Stadium when a limo pulled up and out Continued on page 6

came George Steinbrenner who grabbed Ray and took him into the stadium where he was going to be arrested. But George saw an opportunity to change a kid’s life and made Ray work for him to pay off the damage. Ray found himself in a Yankees uniform on the field, shagging fly balls during batting practice hours later, while his cousins watched in disbelief. So began Ray’s lifelong career working with the Yankees in many different capacities. While his inside-the-clubhouse tales of all the Yankee greats through the years are riveting, the real story is what Ray did with his opportunity, parlaying it into his becoming a community leader, dedicating his own life to helping, inspiring and rescuing generations of city kids from the temptations of the street. The book is funny, inspirational, emotional and a fun read

for Yankees and non-Yankees fans alike. Back to Babylon, when we got back to the diner, all my daughter-in-law Liz could do was shake her head in disbelief at our good fortune of meeting such great people. The game itself was an adventure. At the stadium, they were having trouble tracking down our tickets. Ray was in Florida and the Yankees staff couldn’t have been nicer trying to locate where our tickets were. It took two innings and phone calls to a half dozen Yankees officers to finally get us in. But it was worth the wait. The seats were in the second section, front row, just to the right of home plate. Trish and I were in our glory watching the game so close. After about an inning, a gentleman and Yankees staff member named George came over to us and asked us if we knew about the Delta Club. He told us to go up there when we wanted and help ourselves to free snacks, gourmet food and drinks

for sale in a beautiful setting. When he walked away, the people sitting around us said, “Who do you know?” The answer, of course, is Ray. The Delta Club was great. They had an outdoor deck with waiter service and views of the field. But we spent most of our time back in our great seats. Even when the opposing pitcher had a perfect game going in the fifth, Trish and I were counting our blessings. As a great Yankee once said, we considered ourselves to be the luckiest people on the face of the earth. Trish and I had a bet, we each picked one Yankee to see who would hit a home run. She had Stanton and I had Sanchez. With the Yankees down in the bottom of the ninth 3-1, Sanchez got up with two on and drilled one into the left field seats for a game winning walk off homer. Lifetime memories are made at the Stadium. One more amazing coincidence. Sitting next to us was this wildly enthusiastic

fan that we struck up a conversation with named Sokol. Small talk led us to find out he was from Astoria, Queens and when we told him we were from Rockaway, he said he was working on a house in Belle Harbor. We asked him the address and sure enough it was my son’s house, which he just sold a month ago. Our jaws dropped when he said the address. Of the 40,758 people in attendance, we are sitting next to a guy working on my son’s house a month after he sold it. Crazy world. The moral of the story is to greet people with a smile and an open heart. Everyone you meet has a story and the beauty of life is to open your eyes and ears to it.

Kicking Off A Career—With the NFL A Far Rockaway football star will continue playing local—and by local, we mean the New York Jets. Hometown favorite, Folorunso Fatukasi of Beach 46th Street was selected by the New York Jets during the 2018 NFL draft last week. The 6 -foot-4, 318 pound defensive linebacker was one of six picks the Jets chose to vie for a spot on Gang Green’s roster come opening day. Fatukasi, or “Foley” to his friends and family, is still reeling from the hearing his name called as a 6th round pick by the New York Jets. Although hints of interest from the team swirled, they all waited anxiously until the official announcement on draft day confirming that Fatukasi would soon be going for the green and white. “It feels great,” Fatukasi told the New York Post. “I give thanks, I don’t want to sound cliché, but I have to thank God for every moment that I have had up until now. It’s surreal.

They work very hard and come from a really nice, quiet, humble family.” Fatukasi graduated from UConn with a dual major in communications and sociology, but his cheerleaders, Williams among them, anticipate a long, successful career in football for Foley. At his old high school stomping grounds at Channel View School for Research, the news spread fast and was shared more than a thousand times on social media. Sheila Murray, athletic director at the school, said, “I can tell you that the entire school is so proud of Foley for his hard work and determination and we wish him all the best in the NFL. us, especially the athletes coming up behind him.” It’s likely that Fatukasi will also never forget those who were left behind. A March 2013 profile in the New York Daily News highlighted the strong bond between Dolphins teammates Breland Archbold, Christopher Carr, Nkozi Stewart, Fatukasi and the late Justin Zemser. Pals since seventh grade, Zemser’s future

was just as bright as Fatukasi’s in high school. After graduating from CVSR, Zemser went off to the U.S. Naval Academy, and Fatukasi went off to the University of Connecticut. With hopes of becoming a Navy Seal and playing ball, Zemser made the sprint football team as a reserve wide receiver and was a favorite among his peers. Navy football teammates recall Zemser’s

willingness to play just about any position the team needed, and often admired him for his “seemingly limitless energy.” But in 2015, tragedy hit, sending shockwaves through the naval academy and on the peninsula. Zemser was heading home to Rockaway when the Amtrak train he was on, derailed. He didn’t survive. Zemser was just 20 years old. In the Daily News article, Fatukasi said his friends, Zemser among them, “have been here for me. They want the best for themselves, and they want the best for me.” There’s no doubt that Zemser would’ve been proud of his fellow teammate’s success. And some believe Foley’s success story is just the start of something big for local talent. Wiliams notes the Fatukasi family is just one prime example of the many talented players on the peninsula and he predicts that more great football players are destined to come out of this community. “Rockaway will turn out more NFL players,” he said assuredly. “This is only the beginning. Just wait and see.”

Few Voices Heard at Peninsula Hospital Site Meeting By Katie McFadden

On Thursday, April 26, the public got a chance to have their say in the future plans for the old Peninsula Hospital site near Beach 51st Street. However, with the only public scoping meeting held at 4 p.m. on a Thursday by the Department of City Planning, only a few locals were available to voice their thoughts on the plan that calls for 17 buildings and more than 2,200 residential units on a less than 10-acre piece of land. At P.S. 105, a school diagonally across from the recently-razed Peninsula Hospital site, not even a quarter of the auditorium was full as the Department of City Planning held its scoping meeting, outlining the early plans for the future of the site and zoning changes that will be necessary to make some aspects of the plan possible. In the summer of 2016, Arker Companies and the Northeast Brooklyn Housing De-

velopment Corporation, together under the Peninsula Rockaway Limited Partnership, purchased the Peninsula Hospital site, which had been unused since the hospital closed in 2012, for $19 million. At the end of March of this year, the Department of City Planning (DCP) released a draft scope of the project, detailing the early plan for the site’s future. It calls

for an approximately 2,289,000 gross square feet (gsf ) development on the 9.34-acre site. The plan includes 17 buildings with around 2,200 residential dwelling units, of which 1,910 are intended to be affordable, restricted to households with incomes up to 80 percent of Area Median Income, while another 270 units will be set aside for senior housing. In addition

to housing, the project would include approximately 151,800 gsf of retail space, around 25,000 gsf of which may be used for a gym; approximately 64,400 gsf of community facility space programed for medical offices, and approximately 37,600 square feet of publicly-accessible open space. The whole site would only include 624 new parking spaces. The planners expect the entire project to be complete by 2034, with construction starting some time in 2019. Arker Companies is no stranger to Rockaway. The company recently developed the Beach Channel Senior Housing project, a seven-story, 154-unit building, mostly reserved for senior citizens and formerly homeless families, located at 34-11 Beach Channel Drive. for seniors. The Peninsula site would be Arker’s second Rockaway project. At Thursday’s meeting, DCP and interested parties gave a brief presentation on the project and opened the floor to public comments. The response among the few that signed up to speak was mixed, with some adamantly against the plan, others in support of it, and many explaining some concerns with certain aspects of the project planned for an already vulnerable peninsula. Councilman Donovan Richards, the only elected official to appear at the meeting, said he “looks forward to working with Arker on this long overdue plan,” but, “we need to make the plan better.” He complimented Arker for hiring many locals for the Beach Channel Senior Housing project, but said the newly proposed project needs to take some things into consideration. “It is critical that some sort of medical facility be included in this plan. There should also be significant square footage for recreation areas for families,” Richards said. He also suggested bringing quality, healthy food store options to the area, urged that 50 percent of the units be made available to residents first and that jobs related to the project go to locals. Richards also pointed out local flooding issues, saying, “In this area, from Beach 56th to 48th, the streets flood with the slightest amount of rainfall, so I’m looking forward to seeing a plan to reduce flooding and improving the draining system in this area as we entertain new development. Resiliency is going to be critical,” he said. He also addressed the need for improved transportation in the area, a need for adequate parking related to the project, the possibility of creating another school in a borough that faces overcrowding in current classrooms and more. “We have some ways to go in this plan to make it a better plan for this community,” he said, adding, “This will go through the ULURP process and will make its way to

my desk and we’ll be the ones saying if we like it and want to approve it or not.” Among other public comments, many pointed out the inconvenient time of holding the meeting at 4 p.m. on a Thursday, many requested that the project include something for children and families, some thanked Arker for providing local jobs, several expressed concerns over having adequate parking, many pointed out that the peninsula can’t meet the medical needs of the residents already here, and some pointed out that the company wants to squeeze too many people into one area. “They took away the only other hospital and now want to turn it into housing units. Where are they gonna go when they’re sick? I can promise you that St. John’s, in its current capacity, cannot handle 2,000 more patients. I’m not against housing or adding people, but the amount you’re doing is ridiculous,” a resident named Samuel said. “This isn’t even a 10-acre site and you want to put 2,200 units on it,” local Glenn DiResto said. “Compare that to Arverne by the Sea. That has the same number of units, 2,200 on 120 acres of land. Not 10 acres. The city is planning to cram 2,200 on 10 acres. That’s too populated for this peninsula that already lacks services such as adequate transportation, schools, hospitals and retail. The 9th Annual Chili & Macn-Cheese Cook-off, the 100 Precinct Community Council’s biggest fundraiser of the year, was a huge success! Bellies were full from chili and for the first time this year, macaroni and cheese, feet were dancing to the beats of DJ Eddy Pastore and smiles were seen around the Knights of Columbus as many won raffle prizes and the cook-off champs were crowned. Free Rain Barrel Giveaway Need a rain barrel? State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato will be giving some away for free. In a continuing effort to help homeowners conserve water and contribute to the betterment of the city’s environmental health, Addabbo and Pheffer Amato will be giving away free rain barrels on Saturday, May 20, in partnership with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Constituents who live within Addabbo and Pheffer Amato’s districts may sign up to receive their free 55-gallon rain barrel, which is able to be attached to a storm gutter to collect and store excess water. This rainwater can then be used to complete tasks around the house and outdoors like watering a garden or washing a car, rather than using fresh water from the tap. “Using rain barrels, which are designed to catch excess

rain water, can have a major impact on our environment if we all take advantage of their benefits,” Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. “Rain barrels are one of those amazing resources you don't want to miss out on,” Pheffer Amato said. “By having a rain barrel you can save money on your water bill whenever you wash your car or water your lawn and can also help to preserve water in general. will be able to hold up to 349 passengers. The first three of these boats are expected to arrive this summer, so the summer commute may be smoother for 2018. Some other things have not gone so smoothly. After the summer battle was over, the Rockaway ferry seemed to have a bad stroke of luck, or poor navigation come into play. In November 2017, a ferry that just departed from Pier 11, got stuck on some old pilings near the pier and the more than 100 passengers had to be transported back to the dock and placed on another vessel. Then, just a month later, a city-bound Rockaway ferry veered off course and found itself stranded on a sandbar between Breezy Point and Coney Island. The 27 passengers on board spent several hours in the cold, awaiting rescue, but they were eventually transported by smaller boats

and other events held by the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, sponsored the food fest, Taste of Rockaway, and has even sponsored the Rockaway Times Photo contest. NYC Ferry has also been responding to feedback. After complaints about not enough boats during the evening commute home, the service changed its spring 2018 schedule to add two more trips from Pier 11 to Rockaway, a 5:45 p.m. and a 7:45 p.m. boat, so boats are now running more frequently in the evening. There are also rumors swirling that the ferry may change the upcoming summer schedule to meet the demands of beachgoers and commuters alike. “Our new fleet will include larger vessels and hopefully our summer schedule will help alleviate capacity issues as well,� the NYC Ferry Twitter account said on Wednesday, May 2. This summer, more of the city will be connected by boat when the Lower East

Hopefully, in the year to come, there will be less, and by less, we mean none of these incidents, but hey, at least the ferry didn’t hit an iceberg. In the peak of winter, the ferry service was introduced to another obstacle as Jamaica Bay started to freeze over, but NYC Ferry did what it could to meet the challenge. On days where conditions seemed impossible, the service was suspended for everyone’s safety, but many attempts were also made by tugboats that were hired to clear the ice so that the service could continue on some chilly winter days. Despite some hiccups, NYC Ferry has proven to be a team player. It’s more than just a welcome commute. The company is also very involved in the neighborhoods it serves, by supporting and volunteering during local events. NYC Ferry has been involved in cleanups

Events at World Champions Karate Center The month of April held several significant events at The World Champions Karate Center. Early in the month, three students attained the status of Black Belt. Dennis Fulton, Jenelle Burgess, and Donna Young completed all the requirements for the prestigious level. The rigorous testing was the culmination of years of training. Congratulations to the students and their families. Also in April, seven black

belts completed their oneyear apprenticeship. This, along with fulfilling teaching and additional training requirements, enabled the seven to become full Shodan, first degree Black Belts. RBA Wins Big City Grant The Rockaway Buisness Alliance (RBA), just got a big boost from the city. The local organization was among nine across the city to be awarded yearly grants from the NYC Small Business Services (SBS) Avenue NYC initiative. On Thursday, April 26, SBS Commissioner Gregg Bishop announced $1.17 million in grant awards to community based development organizations (CBDOs) to boost underserved neighborhoods through community development projects. The awards, funded by SBS’ Avenue NYC initiative, will be used to strengthen CBDOs capacity to carry out tailored, multi-year commercial revitalization programs in low- and moderate-income communities. This is the first year that Avenue NYC is awarding grants for multi-year program commitments in an aim to enhance the capacity of CBDOs to understand local neighborhood needs and deliver impactful community development projects. Grantees will be awarded

up to $100,000 per year for up to three years. “As New Yorkers, we take great pride in our neighborhoods, which is why the City is committed to empowering community-based organizations to strengthen and preserve their neighborhoods,” Gregg Bishop, commissioner of the NYC Department of Small Business Services, said. “With these new multi-year awards, we’ve taken this commitment to the next level by funding valuable commercial revitalization projects for up to three years.” The other groups awarded include the Chhaya Community Development Corporation in Jackson Heights, the Community League of the Heights in Washington Heights, the Flatbush Development Corporation in Brooklyn, Greater Hunts Point Economic Development Corporation in the Bronx, the Harlem Park to Park Initiative in Manhattan, the Jamaica Center Improvement Association in Queens, the Mosholu Preservation Corpora-

Activists Pipe Up on Pipeline at Public Hearing On Thursday, April 26, the only New York public hearing about a proposed natural gas pipeline off the waters of New Jersey and Rockaway, was held at 5 p.m. in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. While the meeting was advertised as a “public comment session,� the process for hearing the public comments was rather, private. “This is bulls***,� was a common phrase heard around the Best Western Gregory Hotel last Thursday as the dozens of people that showed up to let the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) hear their thoughts on the Williams Company’s newest proposed project, the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project (NESE), were displeased with the new speaking format. Rockaway locals and other New Yorkers have been battling against natural gas projects proposed for our waters for several years, so many were shocked to find the public hearing format changed for Thursday’s meeting. of convening in one conference room and testifying before all, as at past FERC meetings, those making public comments, whether in support of or against the project, were confined to a waiting room while individuals were selected one by one to enter another room to state their thoughts to FERC. National Grid to serve customers around New York City. The NESE would have elements in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, but the main portion of the project includes 23.5 miles of 26-inch-diameter pipeline loop from New Jersey to the waters off of Rockaway. This pipeline would start in Middlesex, NJ, would make its way through the ocean, and would connect to the Rockaway Lateral Project. Since the “public� comments were only permitted in a closed room, it is not known how many showed up in support of the project or against it, but many in opposition of the project attempted to let their voices be heard in other ways. Prior to the start of the meeting, several protestors rallied outside, holding up signs like, “Stop the Williams Pipeline� and “Save the Rockaways.� Then, once inside, abiding by Department of Homeland Security officers’ requests to not “rally� inside the hotel, some of those who spoke to FERC, summarized their comments in the

waiting area, while keeping their voices to a minimum, and the response was greatly anti-pipeline. Kim Fraczek of the Sane Energy Project mentioned several reasons for being against the project. “This will include 23 miles of trenching on our ocean floor that is going to occur and stir up the toxins that have been settling there. We’re now seeing the return of life, the return of endangered species in our area and we want to keep it that way. The Williams pipeline will disrupt that process of bringing life back to our shores,� she said. She also spoke about the necessity of the pipeline, or lack thereof. “We know National Grid is the customer of this pipeline. We know that one of the five chairs of FERC is Cheryl LaFleur, a 27year veteran and lead of National Grid. Also, according to 2012 reports of our energy necessity for the city of New York, we know we have enough gas to get us through and we’re now investing in renewable infrastructure.” Many mentioned supporting renewable energy alternatives, like wind energy, which very well may be in Rockaway’s future. Although he couldn’t attend, local Danny Rusciilo’s statement against the pipeline was also read. “How much does Rockaway have to put up with? It only takes one mistake or oversight to cause catastrophic damage from an explosion or fire. Williams Company has a terrible track record when it comes to accidents, a very good reason why we, residents of the Rockaway peninsula do not need to take that chance with the installation of their pipeline. Rockaway already went through one devastation, Superstorm Sandy. We say no to this pipeline, we say no to this Williams Company period. We implore you Governor Cuomo to veto this catastrophe away as you did for the LNG port for the Rockaways,” Ruscillo said. The Williams Pipeline is the wrong approach for this city, this state and this nation.” “We have a duty as New Yorkers to protect our environment so that our children and future generations can inhabit it. Today I stand with our community and Civic Organizations against the proposed William’s Pipeline,” Pheffer Amato said. “Together we must take collective actions to preserve our beaches, our marine life, our water quality, and most importantly, protect the hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of residents that could possibly be put at risk.” The project needs approval by FERC for construction to begin, but another factor has come into play, which has put Williams’ timeline on pause. On April 20, the Department of Environmental Conservation denied a necessary water quality certification for the project, saying that Williams failed to complete its application on time and the environmental review was incomplete, and that the “materials that were submitted to DEC showed potentially significant environmental impacts that raised serious concerns.” This denial has put the project on hold, regardless of the FERC decision, but Williams has an opportunity to complete its application. For those who missed Thursday’s meeting, public comments are still being accepted through May 14. Comments can be made online or sent by mail. HEPATITIS Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that may be caused by a viral infection, medication, alcohol, and other things. Today I would like to concentrate on hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV) and can be transmitted by contact with the feces of an infected person. Transmission may occur by directly touching the feces of an infected person or consuming food or water that has been contaminated by fecal matter. Hepatitis B and C are not transmitted by food or feces but rather by contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person. Hepati-

tis A may be spread by sexual activity (mostly men who have sex with men) and intravenous drug use, however these types of cases are uncommon. Foods most commonly associated with hepatitis A are fruits, vegetables, salads, raw shellfish, and contaminated rice. Fruits, vegetables, and salads may become contaminated if prepared by someone with hepatitis A who did not properly wash their hands following a bowel movement. Shellfish can be contaminated if harvested from polluted waters and rice by contaminated rice paddies. Hepatitis A may be spread up

to two weeks before symptoms appear and up to a week after symptoms appear. The time from exposure to symptoms is usually two to six weeks. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Jaundice is caused by the liver releasing bilirubin, or bile, into the blood stream rather than into the biliary ducts, which normally conduct bile into the small intestine. Because bile is released into the blood stream and not the intestine, not only do the skin and eyes turn yellow, but the urine darkens to a tea-like color and the stools, without bile, are a pale color. Because it is caused by contaminated food, hepatitis A usually occurs in localized outbreaks. There have been several recent outbreaks in the U.S. among homeless people. The HAV can survive on food surfaces and is only killed when the food is heated to at least 185 degrees for a minimum of one to two minutes. There is no specific

The Rockaway Times treatment for hepatitis A and symptoms usually subside within two months, although the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does report that 10 to 15 percent of those infected by the HAV may have symptoms that can last up to nine months. Someone who knows they have been exposed to hepatitis A may be given immune globulin (basically, antibodies to HAV) within two weeks of exposure. Otherwise vaccination is the only prevention. Vaccination is recommended for all children at age one year and to those at risk for infection. Those at risk for HAV infection include men who have sex with men, those who travel often to areas where HAV is common (i.e. Southeast Asia), intravenous drug users, those with liver disease or clotting problems, and teachers and children in childcare facilities. Status Huh? Last week I wrote about privacy and how pretty much many people are being hypocritical when saying their privacy is being violated. This week I would like to talk about the “Vague-Bookers.” You know who they are…those people who post those vague statuses about how certain people have harmed them or that a certain person will one day find karma. Recently, a friend of mine on Facebook (and in life) put up a status: “Stop asking peo-

ple to pray for you if you’re not going to say what’s wrong, I am not going to be praying for you to heal your yeast infection.” I literally laughed out loud. When I messaged Barbara Knott to ask her to use the status for the column, she mentioned that some people took the status offensively and not as a joke. She said to me that people often put those vague statuses and when you ask them what is the matter they reply, “I don’t want to talk about it.” Well then, why

did you post it? Recently, one of those vague posts went up about prayers. I received many calls from friends, texts and group chats: “What is the matter with so and so?” I said, “I have no idea.” One friend asked me if I was going to text the said person and ask, and I said “No, if they wanted us to know they would have told us.” The next day I received a text: “Go back on the post and read the comments you can see what is the matter.” I actually looked, however, there were more than one hundred comments. I responded: “I’m good.” In this case the information became public knowledge. Sometimes, it does not. That vague post stays a secret and the subject of group chats and dinner conversations. You also have to screenshot all of those Vague-book posts because the said person may delete it when they have come to their senses and have realized it was a bit much. The posts I am referring to are usually about a friendship

Page 29 or a relationship and maybe some people after it is posted figure out who and what it is about. I did not screenshot a very vague post of an in-law one night and asked a relative about it. When we went to look together, not only was the post gone, I could not even find their account. My daughters told me I had been “ghosted.” A term that means the person blocked you from seeing their posts. Did she have Mark Zuckerberg powers and knew I texted about her post? FIND YOUR CALM There are 1,440 minutes in one day. Some of those minutes are sleep time – very important to rest. Some of those minutes are perhaps scheduled work time or time with children or yoga class time or food shopping time or however we carve into those 1,440 minutes to apportion out everything that happens in one day. We soon see that all of the minutes are taken. If we were to “take the time” to document how we spend all of the minutes in one day, it would be surprising to see what we really do. Think about the words “spend

time.” We are really spending the allocation every day – the allocation of minutes. . . we’re using them up day after day after day. It may seem that even though we’re scheduling all of the activities, we’re not in control of how we spend our time. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. But, there are enough minutes. Breaking the day into minutes shows us that we have time. We have time to stop to be in a calm place. Being in a calm place is beneficial for our well-being. Take 10 minutes out of every

1,440 to Find Your Calm. Sometimes when I am not in “body/mind/heart harmony,” I take 10 minutes (well really I don’t count them, I just take a little bit) to center in with a few deep breaths, asking myself what is going on, what can I do to feel better? Basically, how do I find my calm again. Awareness. First of all, being aware that things inside aren’t quite that right; there might be just a feeling of uneasiness. Things reel up now and again through no fault of our own. Our life’s experiences, because they become a part of us, come up time and time again. And it is how we look at them that makes the difference. So we may be uneasy about something or someone and then taking that 10 minutes to be aware and acknowledge and bring a way in to feel better really helps us to move on. We acknowledge whatever it is, we don’t press it down. And, knowing that it had a place in our lives, we go from there. After a while, even moments of sadness from the past become different. They become part of

The Rockaway Times our life’s experiences and not a source of uneasiness or unhappiness. The checking in for 10 minutes is helpful, otherwise we just go around if we have an uneasy feeling moving from one activity to another to another. Take the time to find your calm. Squeeze it in – you have 1,440 minutes! One thing is for certain: when you are whole, well and happy, you will give that to everyone around you replacing anger, fear, anxiety and stress. Pheffer Amato to Hold Naloxone Training Session Addiction and drug overdoses is a widespread problem. Thankfully, tools like naloxone are available to help reverse overdoses. On Thursday, May 17, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato is hosting a free training session so people can learn how to use this life-saving serum. In conjunction with the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Pheffer Amato will hold a free naloxone training session will be provided at the Queens Library in Howard Beach (92-06 156th Ave) at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. This session will teach participants how to recognize, respond to, and reverse an opioid overdose using naloxone. “Families across New York State and the entire nation have been torn apart by addiction

and a heroin epidemic that has rapidly escalated,� Pheffer Amato said. “To see families lose loved ones to addiction is heartbreaking. This session can give people the necessary knowledge and training that can help save lives.� The training session is free and open to the public. Registration for the event is required. Participants must be 16 years of age. CVSR Goes To Albany

Last week, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato hosted the Channel View School for Research’s (CVSR) ‘Crew Council’ in Albany. The Crew Council is the CVSR student government organization and every year they travel to Albany to see the Capitol in action. The group attended NYS Assembly Legislative session, were introduced on the floor of the Assembly, toured the NYS Museum, and then went to the Corning Tower.

Finally, Zassenhaus presents several “sketches”, titled Ways of Telling Time, as the artist plays with how time is measured by light, decay, and ritual. Beyond What’s Known will open at the sTudio 6 Gallery in Fort Tilden, with a reception on Saturday, May 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., through May 27. Several events will take place Michelle Zassenhaus is about to show Rockaway beyond what’s known. The Brooklyn-based artist was selected by the Rockaway Artists Alliance as the winner of their 2018 Solo Show Competition and she’ll be showing off her work in the RAA’s newest exhibit, opening on May 12. Zassenhaus is a Brooklyn-based photographer who received her BFA in Art Photography from Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. Her work has been recognized by Photo District News, L’Œil de la Photographie, and Don’t Take Pictures. Zassenhaus’ photos have been exhibited across the United States, but her show at the RAA, “Beyond What’s Known,” will be her debut solo exhibition. “Beyond What’s Known” is the culmination of a “selfstyled” residency Zassenhaus completed at Rockaway Beach over the winter, with the water being the subject of many of her creative photos that almost look like paintings. According

to an RAA press release, “whilst grappling with life-changing events, for which the show is a metaphor, Zassenhaus creates a handful of personal surveys of the landscape at the water’s edge.” Through her characteristic large-format long exposures and other photographic techniques, Zassenhaus captures the “signature” of Rockaway, an area which, unbeknownst to many, but not to those who live locally, is part of New York City, yet presents a different view of what many might picture when they think of New York City. In her series City Meets Sea (as in #16 Rockaway Beach), Zassenhaus’ human-scaled images, at 60x75” seduce the viewer in their ephemerality reminiscent of color field paintings. Another series on the same subject features images created by a camera left overnight, resulting in striking 10hour exposures. In other work, Zassenhaus explores more inland qualities, noting “At night, I sense a quiet solitude. The ocean ebbs in the moonlight.

On Saturday, April 28, the Rockaway Civic Association hosted a free compost giveaway during which approximately 480 bags (seven tons) of nutrient-rich soil additive were given away within a three-hour period. For those in Rockaway who are now taking part in the weekly food waste pick-ups conducted by the NYC Department

of Sanitation, the event was a unique opportunity to reuse the products of the food composting process. The 30-pound bags distributed at the event were the end-product of the weekly collection of organic matter, which is expanding rapidly throughout the five boroughs. The process starts with organic matter collected by the San-

were representatives of the Department of Sanitation and the environmental non-profit organization, Big Reuse, who helped explain the composting program and distributed informational flyers about the process. Also assisting during the event, were student volunteers from various Rockaway schools who helped give out compost bags and to ensure an orderly flow of vehicles through the site located at Shorefront Parkway and Beach 106th Street. The student volunteers literally moved tons of material! The Rockaway Civic Association will be holding a Boardwalk Bake Sale on Saturday, May 12 and a Beach CleanUp on Saturday, May 19 prior to the commencement of the summer season. Caulking is one of those things that most people take for granted. When they have a leak in a shower or sink, they will automatically dismiss that the problem might be the silicone or elastic seal, commonly referred to as caulking. Now like everything, there is a professional way to caulk or re-caulk everything in your house. Some people think that when they go to the hardware store to buy what they need, they only have to pick a color. They make more types of caulking than you can imagine. They make specific caulk for specific jobs. The first thing to know is what type of caulking you need. Luckily, the label of the tube will almost always specify what to use that product for. I have bought most of the brands out there over the years and my favorite still is the “Dap” brand. It’s reasonably priced and very reliable. If you are looking to use the product to seal and fasten at the same time, I always go with the “Loctite” brand. The most important part of applying caulking is the size and angle you cut at the top of the tube. Almost all the time, people cut too big a hole in the top of the tube. My rule of thumb is to cut the hole just slightly smaller than the gap you are filling. This way you can guide the top of the tube right into the crevice without covering the surface itself. Make sure you can see the caulk come out of the caulking gun and keep very light pressure on the trigger. Squeezing the caulking gun too hard is the second biggest mistake. Apply the first bead and then release the

trigger. Look for any gaps in coverage or missed spots. Fill those spots as neatly as possible. Put the caulking gun aside. Lick your pointer finger, and evenly “push” the caulking into the crack. If

you’re using a silicone-based product, you need to clean the excess right away to avoid any messy streaks. Now if all of this sounds out of your comfort zone, there is a way to “caulk for dummies” (no offense). It involves one extra step that is actually another skill entirely, but it does work 100 percent of the time. Sometimes if I’m sealing a very expensive tile I will do this just to ensure no mistakes. Take a roll of painters tape. For this I use the Scotch brand blue. Do not use the green frog tape that is great for painting. Tape as neatly as possible on both sides of the gap you are going to fill. Once the tape is applied, apply the caulking right down the middle. Now when you do it this way, you have the luxury of not being so careful about how much caulking comes out of the gun, but try to not go nuts. After the bead is applied, push it in with your finger with even pressure. Wait 30 seconds and pull the tape off slowly. Do not touch it after that. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and several beholders made the tough choice of selecting 30 photos out of nearly a thousand entries in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. The public was invited to view and choose favorites at Whit’s End on Sunday, April 29 before judges, Portia Dyrenforth, Phil Goldfeder, John Cori, Heidi Woolever, David Selig, and Casey Brouder made their selections. The photos came in by email (and some people did not include their names so we’re still tracking them down) and we will have a full list in next week’s Rockaway Times. The selected photos will all be candidates for the Grand Prize of $500 and each will be blown up to poster-size and will be put on display on the boardwalk, the ferry landing, or at the Broad Channel library. It is expected the photos will be on display starting Memorial Day weekend, just a few weeks ahead.

The 2018 contest consisted of different categories including Beach Life, Rockaway Action Shots, The Ferry, Jamaica Bay, and Pets. Some categories had more entries than others making the competition in some particularly tough. Although a Top 30 was selected, an additional six will be chosen to be on display as well. Those will be announced closer Memorial Day weekend. John Cori is responsible for most of the considerable effort that goes into the popular contest. Co-sponsors who make the contest a real Rockaway happening include the NYC Parks Department, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, the NYC Ferry, and The Rockaway Artists Alliance. The amebocytes within the blood, which play a similar role to white blood cells, increase the blood’s ability to fight off and locate endotoxins. There is no synthetic substitute to this procedure, making the horseshoe crab invaluable to our health and resulting in their protection. Along with the opportunity to directly explore the features of this creature, they are also given opportunities to take a field trip to Jamaica Bay’s shoreline to see the gathering of these creatures around every full and new moon when the tides are highest. NOTES FROM RDRC This is an update from the Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC). Summer Youth Employment Program: The NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) recently awarded RDRC a contract to provide 300 high school students with employment, paid internships and training focused on specific career pathways identified in partnership with the Queens High School for Information, Research and Technology and the Rockaway Park High School for Environmental Sustainability. Targeted fields include but not limited to: healthcare, construction, retail, information and technology, finance, insurance, and legal services. The RDRC team is currently conducting the enrollment process of youth applicants selected for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Our goal is to provide a mini-

mum of 1,200 Rockaway youth with jobs skills training, financial education and paid employment during the months of July and August. The Worksite Development Team is actively recruiting businesses and notfor-profits organizations located throughout NYC and western Nassau County to become SYEP worksites. Our goal is to establish 400 SYEP worksites! Since July 1, 2017 RDRC has provided computer instruction and open lab 90 students. We are pleased to also announce that five of our advanced students are now Microsoft Systems certified experts in Word.

The lab is available free-ofcharge and made possible through a grant from Spectrum and the continued support of NYC Councilman Donovan Richards. Neighborhood Preservation: RDRC's Business & Professional Services focuses on providing housing counseling to first time homebuyers, existing homeowners at-risk of losing their homes due to foreclosure, and credit counseling services. In addition to providing HUD certified housing counseling services, our team works with a variety of lenders such as Bank of America, TD Bank, Investors Bank and Santander Bank to find the right mortgage loan product for our clients. During the March - April period, the RDRC has seen a strong demand for first-time homebuyer counseling that has resulted in approximately 20 first-time homebuyer certificates being awarded during that period.

With over 35 members and growing, it is on pace to reach its target of 50 members by the end of this calendar year according to REMA Board President, LaVida Jervis. The next monthly meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 28 at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at 1920 Mott Avenue, Room 5. Lots of exciting matchups this season in PeeWee Senior (PWS) Boys action as Zwerling Ophthalmology Orioles are keeping their undefeated record alive with their win versus AKB Security Rockies (score, 8-3). The Rockaway Midshipmen Fearless Z Blue Jays are keeping Justin Zemser’s memory well-honored with their so-far undefeated record, winning by a score of 11-2 over the ABLE Discovery Center for Children Diamondback’s team. Congratulations to Walsh Management Angels for their win over Breezy Point Lumber Cardinals. Breezy Point Lumber Cardinals, however, won their game earlier that week over AKB Security Rockies with 11 to 1 score. Also, a notable win by the ServePro Pirates who won their game by a score of 13 to 0 against the ABLE Discovery Center for Children Diamondbacks. We’re rooting for you, Diamondbacks! And folks, beyond winning, it is really awesome to see how these boys play with such great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Way to go PWS! In Minor Boys action, an exciting nail-biter ended the Storage Fox Diamondbacks

A dull blade will leave a chamfer on the tube and will inevitably make the caulking come out unevenly. • Always use your upper body to move the tube, or at the very least, your entire arm. If you use just your wrists, I’ll almost guarantee you slip somewhere along the way. • If you don’t use the entire tube in one shot, you’ll want to save the tube for another job. Use a screw that fits the hole you’ve cut and stand the tube straight up in the basement somewhere. If the
