Always A Bright Side Memorial Day weekend was like mid-summer. There was no easing into the season, no dress rehearsal. Ferries overflowed, stores ran out of ice, and lines formed at some places like they were handing out hundred dollar bills. The Propane King was like an overworked EMT, saving barbecues everywhere. It helps us feel better when we tell DFDs to pick up their garbage, to respect others’ space on the beach (easy on the loud radios!) and to drive safely and park
legally. We write columns and letters to the editor. We go on Facebook and Twitter and decry the behaviors of the bad DFD. It doesn’t do any good. But who cares, it makes us feel better. Some noxious, noisome nincompoops storm the beach and we’re left to wonder if some weird mutations were developed on the mainland. I’m still a bit traumatized from some bathing suits I saw. Well, not the suits but …well, you get the idea. And then there was a couple making
out on the boardwalk in broad daylight. Did I mention they were pushing 70 years old? There are so many things that make you say, dude….wtf? Will you get a clue? The litterers are legion. But come on, you think they’ll read a column or a Facebook post and all of sudden have an epiphany? They’re more likely to throw the newspaper out the window than read it. Imagine a gross, uncaring cretin reading something about how people shouldn’t litter and says to himself, that’s a great point. I’m not gonna do that anymore. Yeah, I can’t imagine that either. People who don’t pick up after their dogs are not gonna get in line because someone wrote something? Nah, they’ll just move to another block. An outraged homeowner is currently reviewing 16 hours of home video surveillance tape so he can publicly shame the guy who let his dog (or horse) use his lawn. Get him, Marty—though it won’t do any good. Look, I don’t know why people put their blankets so close to yours. I don’t know why people
Page 5 park near my car when I put it all the way over there, all by itself. I don’t know why some surfers have to make Beach 88th Street look like a rush hour subway car. Dudes, there’s a whole ocean. There’s no hope, of course. Some people are uneducable. But the bright side is, they give us something to talk about. The weekend beach stories are kinda like subway stories from the 1970s. Everybody’s got one. But hey, I don’t want to be a dark cloud on a summer day. There’s an even brighter side. As of now, there are no plans for a Rockaway Floatopia. Ocean Park, a stretch along the Chesapeake Bay, was host to Floatopia, a shoreline event at which people bring basically anything that will float and then party on. Well, it made national news this week because visitors left more than footprints. More than 20,000 pounds of trash was left behind. USA Today said, by comparison, Pensacola beaches had 18,000 pounds in all of 2018. Yikes. So, look at the bright side, our DFDs are better than theirs.

Beaches Open for the Season Story and Photos by Katie McFadden
For the first time in several years, the official beach-opening ceremony took place on Beach 17th Street. Everyone took in the pristine sight of downtown’s Caribbean-esque beaches while gathered in front of DredSurfer Grill, which was ready to serve up jerk chicken and other Caribbean delicacies to guests on the beautiful morning of Friday, May 24. The ceremony had a party vibe
with a young steel drum band banging out modern hits, even the “Baby Shark” song, double-dutch jumpers, giveaways from NYC Ferry and even a watershow off the water from the FDNY fireboat. Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, Councilman Donovan Richards, Congressman Gregory Meeks, State Senator Joe Addabbo, Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, new Queens Parks Commissioner Mike Dockett, Community Board 14 District Manager Jon Gaska, and even the elusive Assemblywoman Michele Titus made an appearance at the ceremony to declare the beaches officially open for summer. “The full beach is open,” declared NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver, who led the ceremony, recalling last year’s beach opening that included a mock funeral after the city made a last-minute decision to close a stretch of Rockaway Beach due to erosion. With the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completing recently completing a replenishment pro-
ject from Beach 92nd to Beach 105th to avoid another summer of closures, there was a lot to celebrate, but Silver acknowledged that more needs to be done, especially in the Beach 30s, which is also heavily eroded. “The entire beach, this year will be open, after a major sand replenishment effort by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. ***** With a summer-like day last Sunday, crowds flocked here. Or tried to. There were reports that ferry lines at Pier 11 stretched for blocks and people were forced to wait more than an hour to get aboard. Some just gave up or headed for the train. If you’re planning on using the ferry on a nice weekend, good luck. ***** It was one of those days. The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is out (we appreciate the rave reviews!) but it stumbled out of the gate as the door-todoor delivery people forgot to include the Guide with the regular weekly newspaper. We got it straightened out and hope you did eventually get the Guide. We will

Forty fantastic photos from the Rockaway Times Photo Contest are now on display along the boardwalk, at the ferry dock, and at Broad Channel Park. The photos look amazing! ***** We were just testing you. In our Word Search last week, a few readers pointed out that the name Pat McVeigh was listed but not in the actual puzzle. We’re trying to get to the bottom of this and will question Ms. McVeigh. We apologize to those who pulled their hair out looking for her name. (Pat did say
it was good to know people were looking for her). ***** A local called 311 to complain about the horrible road conditions between Beach 126th and Beach 116th Street. The reply: The Department of Transportation inspected the condition you reported and found that the condition meets its standards and/ or there is a valid permit to conduct work. Your Service Request was closed. (Ha!) ***** NYC Parks is testing all of its more than 3,500 outdoor drinking fountains for lead. Rockaway fountains have been tested and are below the federal guidelines, except for one. The one on the first base side of the ballfield in Bayswater Park has been benched until it’s remediated. ***** It sometimes takes us three years to get things right. In 2018, attorney Victor Re called and wondered why he wasn’t asked to take

In 2019, Mr. Re called us again and asked if he should take it personally (or we don’t need the money) that we didn’t contact about him this year’s Guide. Victor, we won’t forget next year! And if we do, we look forward to your call! ***** Lime announced that it is extending its e-bike pilot program in Rockaway and will increase the number of bikes from 400 to 600. Since Lime’s launch, there have been almost 90,000 individual rides in Rockaway. The other company, Pace, fled town, but left some bikes behind, essentially making them garbage. ***** Best wishes to Joe Young who is stepping down from the 100th Precinct Community Council after 18 years. He'll be missed! And congratulations to Lew Simon, who'll be taking his place as president.

Joe Hurley’s All-Star Rock Revue to Headline Irish Festival

The Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point Irish Festival has been celebrating Irish culture and tradition in town since the local Ancient Order of Hibernians revived it in 2013, and each year it has gotten better. With Joe Hurley’s Irish Rock Revue, featuring an all-star group of musicians and other guests headlining Saturday, plus plenty of other great music on tap for the weekend, this year’s festival will give even more reason for Irish eyes to smile. It’s shaping up to be a beautiful weekend for the 7th Annual Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point Irish Festival. On Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2, be-
tween 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., head to the St. Camillus parking lot on Beach 100th Street for a weekend full of Irish music and shenanigans. Since AOH Division 21 brought back the fest, it has proven to be a big hit, and with this year’s lineup, it could be the biggest yet. This year, the stage will have a more central location in the lot, so all can take in the amazing sounds of this year’s acts. The festival has typically been centered around Irish bands and musicians, but for the first time, local favorites will be getting in on the fun. On Saturday, June 1, popular local band Wine With Sue, which celebrates their 25th anniversary this year, will kick off the music starting at 12:30 p.m., playing both American party favorites, and some Irish tunes. An Irish
festival wouldn’t be complete without bagpipes, and at 2:30 p.m., the Breezy Point Catholic Club Pipes and Drums band will play some traditional Irish music. At 3 p.m., a favorite that comes back year after year, Shilelagh Law, will get the party going, followed by the O’Malley’s Irish dancers impressing crowds with jigs and reels. But don’t head home early, or you’ll miss out on the biggest act of the night, Joe Hurley’s All-Star Irish Rock Revue. Hurley’s All-Star Irish Rock Revue is a longtime New York City tradition featuring a musical-literary collaboration that celebrates, “The Great Irish Songbook,� full of Celtic classics and famous Irish tunes by Thin Lizzy, The Pogues, U2, Van Morrison, The Undertones, and more. Not only will the songs be great, but the roughly 65 musicians coming together to perform them include some of
the best in the business. Some of the guest stars include Joe Hurley himself, Denis Leary’s “Rescue Me� star, James McCaffrey, making his first-ever trip to Rockaway, legendary Irish actor and author, 87-yearold Malachy McCourt, Tammy Faye, Albert Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult, Mary Blount of Baby Shakes, Steve Conte of the New York Dolls, NY1 newsman Roger Clark, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Ricky Byrd (guitarist for Joan Jett), Roxy Music bassist Sal Maida, Billy Campion of the Bogmen, Walker Hornung of Brotherhood of the Grape, and much, much more. The Revue will finish off the night with a more than three-hour set starting at 5:30 p.m. In its 21 years, Hurley’s Irish Rock Revue has sold out big city venues including Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall, Lincoln Center, Highline Ballroom and City Winery, but Hurley isn’t a stranger to Rockaway. He’s previously brought the Revue to the bay at a 2016 summer show at the Bungalow Bar. For Hurley, the peninsula is a place that has a strong hold on his heart. As a town where his father lived at the end of his life, a place rooted in deep Irish culture and a place with an incredible comeback story after Hurricane Sandy, Hurley thought it would be a perfect location to celebrate, "The Great Irish Songbook." Following Sandy, Hurley came to Rockaway with volunteers to bring supplies to St. Francis de Sales Church, and he followed up by hosting ben-
efit concerts for Rockaway organizations like the Graybeards and Rockaway WISH. In keeping with the tradition of supporting good causes, Hurley says he’s honored to bring his Revue to a place he loves, all for a good reason. “I was out there after Sandy and it was this decimated wasteland, and those at the AOH said they wanted to hold the Irish festival the summer after to bring people back together and they did that. The resurgence here has been incredible. It made me want to bring out the best of the best to Rockaway because Rockaway absolutely deserves it. It’s no easy feat bringing 65 to 75 musicians together but this is all about giving back. The Irish Festival is a fundraiser for different charities, including the Rockaway Special Olympics, which gives us even more reason to for it. It’s a wonderful labor of love for a wonderful area,” Hurley said. Each year, all of the money raised from the $10 admission, t-shirt sales and a raffle for a trip for two to Ireland, allows

the AOH to give back to different organizations throughout the community including local parishes, the Special Olympics program and more. The AOH was able to donate more than $30,000 from last year’s festival alone. “This has become our signature event marking the beginning of the summer and it’s something where everyone from all neighborhoods can come together and celebrate Irish history and culture,” John Moroney, the AOH’s festival chairperson said. “Plus, it’s a fundraiser for all of these local charitable organizations that need assistance.” While Saturday’s lineup is stellar, Sunday’s is just as good. Marian Waldon, who is coming from overseas and has the number one Irish country song
hit, is kicking off the day at 12:30 p.m. She’ll be followed by The Highland Rovers with “a phenomenal female singer and fiddler,” according to Moroney, at 2:30 p.m. Brooklyn’s Canny Brothers Band is back again and will be entertaining the crowds starting at 4:30 p.m. Finishing off the show, starting at 6:30 p.m., is HellCat Maggie, a seven-piece band from upstate New York, which Moroney says, “people will really enjoy.” The festival will also include dozens of vendors selling Irish and local goods, food like hamburgers, hot dogs, corned beef sandwiches, a big variety of beers and ciders, and since this is a family-friendly festival, there will be plenty of free activities for the kids, including bouncy houses, face-painting and more. The festival is rain or shine. Admission is just $10 at the door or free for kids 12 and under. Chairs and coolers are prohibited, but you’ll find plenty of seating and beverages at the event. RTC’s Doubt A Parable Casts No Doubt On What Makes Art Good By Kami-Leigh Agard
This past Tuesday, The Rockaway Times had the privilege to get a sneak peak of the Rockaway Theatre Company’s (RTC) latest production, “Doubt A Parable.” No spoiler alert here, as the ending of the play will certainly leave you in doubt, but as aptly stated by the production’s co-director, David Risley, “Good theater promotes discussion, and that’s what great art is about.” And folks, this play will definitely have you talking, as if trying to dissect Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, “Last Supper,” asking the question—What takes precedence—fact or emotion? The curtain on RTC’s thought-proving production goes up this Friday, May 31, and there’s no doubt about it— it’s not one to miss. The Pulitzer-winning dramaplay, Doubt A Parable, written by Bronx-born John Patrick Shanley (which was even later adapted into a movie, starring academy-winning actors, Meryl Streep (Sister Aloysius) and Viola Davis (Mrs. Muller), is set at a Catholic school in the Bronx in 1964. The historical backdrop is that the story begins at a time of transition when Americans were reeling from the assassination of JFK, President Lyndon B. Johnson began his push to escalate the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Act was signed, and the battle was waging in the Catholic Church in the midst of Vatican II. The plot follows Sister Aloysius Beauvier, the head of St. Nicholas Catholic School, who is responsible for Sister James and responsible to Father Brendan Flynn. Based upon a few circumstantial details and a lot of determined intuition, the ultra-stern nun, Sister Aloysius Beauvier, believes that Father Flynn, has been molesting a 12-year-old boy named Donald Muller, the school's only African-American student. Sister Aloysius recruits a young, naive nun, Sister James,
to assist her in monitoring the suspicious yet charismatic Father Flynn. She also addresses her concerns to Donald's mother, who surprisingly is not horrified or even shocked by the allegations. Mrs. Muller is more concerned about her son getting into high school and avoiding a beating from his dad, which she admits is a result of her son’s questionable sexual inclinations. The play concludes with a one-on-one confrontation between Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn as she attempts to call faith, patriarchy, wisdom, religious order and truth into question. However, the doubt is that this is not an open and shut case, and the RTC’s production will leave you riveted, determined to unravel the truth, which you may not—or maybe will? In fact, Father Flynn (played by Frank Caiati), is a more sympathetic character than Sister Aloysius (Susan Corning), the righteous nun who is certain that he represents a danger to the boys at the junior high school she rules with an iron fist. Unlike Cardinal Law, Sister Aloysius is a hands-on administrator who keeps a sharp eye on her teachers like Sister James (Ashley Ann Jones), and students. If you attended Catholic school, you will remember iron-fist nuns like Sister Aloysius, and the ever-enthusiastic Sister James, who just loves her stu-

dents and vows to the Church. Billyn Tarplain brings great dignity and a gritty emotion to Mrs. Muller's painful viewpoint, and Jones as Sister James is easily the play's most likeable character as her innocence is so endearing and refreshing. However, it's the yin-yang personas of Caiati as Father Flynn and Corning as Sister Aloysius, who electrify the stage, and make you want to shake them, demanding their true agenda and of course, the truth. Corning as Sister Aloysius may come off as a termagant, but her clumsy comedic persona will woo you. Avoid The Day With A Book in Rockaway What’s better than a book in one hand and a glass of wine (or beer) in the other? Well for the month of June, starting this weekend, find out at Avoid The Day (ATD) Bookstore & Cafe’s pop-up in the heart of Rockaway Beach. Since July 2017, local wife and husband duo, Jianna and Jason Heuer, have been pursuing their dream of running small pop-up bookstores to bring their literary dreams of a brick-and-mortar store to life. Now they have the opportunity for the month of June to try out their concept on a larger scale. This will be the Heuers' ninth and longest pop-up. They started at massage and wellness studio, NutureUWellness, and it wasn’t long before other businesses such as Rockaway Love and Rockaway Brewing Co. got on board. However, what makes this June 2019 debut even more special is the space they can use as their own, every Saturday and Sunday at 211 Beach 90th Street.
“The owner of the building knew I had been doing the bookstore pop-ups and knows my husband, Jason, through other projects. We saw that this building was for sale /lease and asked him if he would be willing to let us use the space in the interim, and he agreed! We are treating this as an opportunity to see if the community can support and of course, has an interest in a permanent bookstore and cafe,” Jianna Heuer said. Avoid The Day will have a curated book selection, as well as one-of-a-kind local art and apparel. Part of their business concept also includes collaborating with other local business owners to put on special events such
as live music, readings, art, and serve local food, which all supports locals helping locals. For example, they will be serving baked goods from Fat Cardinal Provisions and Rockaway Beach Bakery. Also, on Saturdays, they will be serving beer and wine sourced from local businesses. The collection of books they curated and chose for this popup took a lot of thought and consideration for locals. Heuer said, “The books we are selling have been carefully curated and chosen based on their condition and what we feel would be interesting to the Rockaway community based on the popularity of certain categories at past pop-ups. We have the following sections available: fiction, memoir, nonfiction, cookbooks, mystery/thrillers, beach reads, children's/teens, and art and gift books.” The Heuers look at their popups as an opportunity to pay it forward. “Community and collaboration is key to what we believe makes a business thrive in
a small, eclectic community like Rockaway. Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach (LBRB) is a local nonprofit that believes the same. While opening a bookstore cafe has been a longtime dream for me, joining LBRB is what made it seem like it could be a reality. I can't thank them enough for being a support and part of my inspiration to make ATD a realty. That’s why we will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the June pop-up to LBRB,” Heuer said. Problematic Peninsula Plan Dear Editor: The re-zoning of the former Peninsula Hospital site is one of the most important issues facing the Rockaway community and will be going before Community Board 14 in June, and many of the local politicians are hoping the community is not given all the details of the plan, misinformed or asleep at the wheel. I have done a lot of research regarding this planned development, and have also written and spoken about how important this issue is to the future of OUR Rockaway com-
munity from east to west. Now the residents must act to oppose the CURRENT plan, so we can get something that will better benefit the community and local residents for years to come. The Arker Companies wants to build a LARGE-SCALE DEVELOPMENT with 11 buildings, many as high as 19 stories, containing 2,200 units of housing on a small plot of land. This development would tower the NYCHA Ocean Bay Houses and add over 7,500+ NEW residents to the community. When done in 10 to 12 years, it will ONLY create about 300 jobs. It would also bring in around 1,500 NEW school-age children with NO school planned and would only provide parking for 754 units, which is less than 35%. There is absolutely nothing wrong with affordable housing, as I myself have lived in affordable housing and know it can provide residents with wonderful opportunities. However, this development is being promoted to residents

as a mixed-income affordable housing development when it is the furthest thing from the truth. The current plan would provide NO units for middle income families and ONLY 13% of the units are for moderate income families, and 87% of the units would go to low, very low and extremely low income. Yes, residents will finally get a supermarket, which is a great thing, however, how are they going to provide people with opportunities, when this development will only provide a few jobs for 7,500+ new residents and further economically and racially segregate the Rockaway community, and continue the city’s approach of concentrated poverty. Through the years, many Rockaway residents have been opposed to any type of change and/or development on the peninsula. This is NOT THE ANSWER to a better community! We should all embrace change when it is POSITIVE, and the redevelopment of this site CAN BE a

However, the CURRENT redevelopment plan that has been put forth by the Arker Companies is NOT responsible and needs to be changed to ensure the negative impacts are minimized and the benefits being promised are greater. This is our community and we have to live with the results, and they do not. It’s time for the Arker Companies to listen to the concerns of the community and go back to the drawing board and come back with a better plan that will benefit the people of the Rockaways and not just their bank account. Lasak for DA Dear Editor: As the primary season approaches, I urge registered Democrats to vote for Greg Lasak for Queens District Attorney on June 25. Experience matters. Greg Lasak has served our county for over four decades as both a prosecutor and a Supreme Court justice, where he worked tirelessly to prevent crime and help victims obtain justice. He excelled in both of these positions just as he will as District Attorney. The job of District Attorney should not be viewed as a reward for prior public service, nor should it be a position sought only because a career politician finds herself term-limited in her current office. You wouldn’t let a podiatrist perform brain surgery on you; why elect someone with no prior experience as a prosecutor to such an important role? Greg Lasak is the only candidate with the experience and skills to run
the Office of the District Attorney from Day 1. Additionally, Greg Lasak was the first and loudest critic of the plan to close Rikers Island and replace it with community jails. He advocates reforms to Rikers, but not at such a steep cost to the local communities and taxpayers. Rockaway has had more than its fair share of shelters, nursing homes and other facilities—I fear that the other DA candidates would not hesitate to consider our community as a viable alternative to Rikers in the future. COMMUNITY GROUPS TO BUILD NEW FAR ROCK PLAYGROUND
Far Rockaway is getting a new playground in under six hours. On Thursday, May 30, a group of volunteers from The Child Center of NY, the Workforce Housing Group and the New York Mets Foundation are joining forces with KaBOOM! to bring a new place for kids to play in Far Rockaway. KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to building playgrounds for all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America, has set its eyes on Far Rockaway and on May 30, a new playground will arise at the Dix Avenue Apartments. This project has been a group effort from the start, when back in March, kids from the community were welcome to draw their
dream playground. On Thursday, those dreams will come true as the Dix Avenue Apartments Playground, based off of their designs, will be built by 200 volunteers. It will be a safe, state-of-the-art playground for kids to enjoy for years to come. “What could possibly be more uplifting to the young people in a community than to have a playground built for them?” asked Deepmalya Ghosh, The Child Center’s Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Community Engagement, who, according to a press release, was instrumental in getting the project off the ground. “The kids in Far Rockaway are in need of quality places to play, and we’re grateful to the Mets Foundation, KaBOOM!, and the Workforce Housing Group, as well as the NYPD 101st Precinct, Denean Ferguson, and Council Member Donovan Richards for their support in bringing this home.” While the main build will take place just over the course of six hours on Thursday, with an of-

But wherever people go, Richards spoke of how Rockaway’s beaches are a place that unites people from all walks of life. “This beach brings everyone together. Young and old, black and white, Jewish and Christian and Muslim, it really symbolizes what America is about,� he said. The beaches are officially open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. when lifeguards are on duty. They will be open through the Sunday after Labor Day, September 8.

There is an unwritten rule, or axiom, in medicine that there is no such thing as a benign brain tumor. This is because the brain is contained and protected within a rigid shell, known as the skull. Because the brain cannot expand within the skull, anything that grows within the brain must by necessity displace vital brain tissue. While growths and tumors may arise within the brain and be pathologically benign, they are not benign in a clinical sense because as they grow, they push away normal brain tissue. Take, for example, the most common brain tumor, the meningioma. Meningiomas account for about 36 percent of all brain tumors and are almost always pathologically benign (more than 95 percent are benign). They arise from the meninges, which are the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Because

meningiomas start outside of the brain at the meninges and grow into the brain, they are technically not brain tumors as they do not arise from within the brain itself, but they are classified as brain tumors for simplicity’s sake. Meningiomas are seen in about two percent of the population. They grow very slowly, often taking decades before they reach a size that causes symptoms, if they ever do. They are most commonly discovered by accident, either on a brain scan being done for another reason, or at autopsy. While they rarely cause symptoms, symptoms can develop once a meningioma grows to a critical size. Symptoms may include vision changes such as double or blurred vision, headaches that worsen over time, hearing loss or tinnitus, memory loss, loss of the sense of smell, seizures, and leg and/or arm weakness. Because meningiomas grow
slowly, symptoms, if present, appear and worsen very slowly. If any of these symptoms appear suddenly, it is a medical emergency. The cause(s) of meningiomas are unknown, but there are risk factors. As there is thought to be a genetic component, having a family member with a meningioma is a risk factor. Other risk factors include female sex (they occur more commonly in women), use of female sex hormones like estrogen and progesterone (known as HRT, or hormone replacement therapy, which includes birth control medication), a history of brain irradiation, and a family history of an inherited nervous system disorder such as neurofibromatosis Type 2. Because meningiomas grow so slowly, advanced age is also a risk factor. While studies show that an age over 70 to 75 is an independent risk factor, that can be said of just about any
disease or condition. Recent research also points to other possible risk factors including the chronic use of NSAIDs (i.e. Aleve, Advil) or aspirin, the use of medications to lower blood pressure, and obesity (research points to a BMI over 30 as being a risk factor). Interestingly enough, there are two factors that negatively correlate with, or lower, meningioma risk. They include chronic severe anxiety and coronary artery disease. Just how these two conditions lower the risk has yet to be determined. If a meningioma reaches a size where it causes symptoms, neurosurgical evaluation is warranted. Meningiomas may be surgically removed or treated with radiation therapy. Thankfully, the need to treat one is rare as most meningiomas never cause any symptoms. Feeding the Good Wolf So many ways to connect to yourself and heal from a space that is always available, you just have to slow down and take the time to simply be. Last Friday at Ocean Bliss Yoga, we offered chanting and meditation with Katie Lords and Paulette Mancuso. Memorial Day weekend is a busy time for everyone with all the celebrations and opening day for the summer. I knew that I would make time for this special evening even though I was being pulled in many directions with all the festivities in Rockaway. Ahh, summer is here and we are happy the beaches are open and the sun is shining. It was an extraordinary evening with a chant that opened our hearts, released negative energy and brought a lightness to each and every
person in the room. Paulette settled us in with a beautiful centering in practice and breathwork. Katie read from a powerful Cherokee Indian legend that I will share in this column. It is the column! Thank you Katie and Paulette for bringing so much wisdom and love to our community. Our negative thoughts can create anxiety, anger, resentment, jealousy—an array of emotions. Negative thinking is normal. However, if this way of thinking becomes incessant, it can lead to depression and self-destructive behavior like addictions, derailing us from what we want most in life. At minimum, negative thinking saps our energy, erodes our self-confidence and can put us in a bad mood. Certainly, many would agree that our thoughts come and go so quickly that it seems impossible to notice them, but with awareness and an attitude of self-compassion, we can redi-
rect our negative thoughts to more positive ones. Two Wolves is a Cherokee Indian legend and illustrates the most important battle of our lives—the one between our good and bad thoughts. Here is how the story goes: An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil—he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” He continued, “the other is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you— and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Cher-
okee simply replied, “The one you feed.” Our thoughts can be our own worst enemy. That is, if we let them. Think about how you may be “feeding” your negative thought, catch it and ask yourself, “What is this thought doing for me?” You will find the answer is that all it is doing is disempowering you. You can immediately feel more empowered by focusing on something good in your life and cultivate the practice of gratitude. We can create greater peace, confidence and a more positive outlook by learning how to manage our thoughts. After all, this battle can be won because we have the power of choice. Which wolf are you feeding? Remember, you always have a choice… All the above was shared by Katie Lords. Forever grateful for the reminder to feed the good wolf.

And just like that, we have 80-degree weather and crowds that completely overpopulate the peninsula! How does nature know that it’s Memorial Day? And how does the City not remember the lines from last year’s ferries? Would it have been impossible to plan for larger or more ferries for the people who waited for hours in Manhattan or those bypassed in Brooklyn? How about those waiting in the rain for the return trip? What a disaster. Failure
snatched from the jaws of victory. And how about all the enemies of Bill de Blasio seizing on the opportunity to use the $600 million spent on the ferry system to beat poor Bill up. I am not defending His Honor, but I am afraid that our dear ferry gets hit in the crossfire and sinks. They keep talking about the subsidy and the fact that only so many people ride the ferries compared to the subways. But maybe larger ferries, more ridership. I mean how many double-sized Q22s do I

have to see riding empty? But like Yogi Berra once said, “it’s too crowded, nobody goes there anymore.” Perhaps we should start using these pages to discourage people from coming here in the summer? I mean, let’s face it, if disaster strikes, there is no plan to get people off this peninsula on a summer weekend. That’s not to mention all the people who continue to come here and live. We don’t really have a hospital, schools are closing, and the two main bridges are continually under construction. Am I missing something? It’s great to see that the sand has been replenished, but a ride on the boardwalk will uncover that people get off whatever transportation they took and go on that beach. Whether it’s the train, ferry or bus, people just go to that very beach and never venture left or right. It makes no sense. But it doesn’t really matter, because that sand brought here at considerable expense is already disappearing back into the Atlantic without any jetties to halt its progress. Good thing
those are coming in 2020, there should be a few grains of sand left by then. Would it be impossible to open up some of the empty lots and use them for parking? I mean, yeah perhaps they are polluted in some way from decades ago, but does it matter if you are just parking cars on them? Couldn’t the parking fees be used to offset the ferry subsidy? Or perhaps we should just tell people that the Great White Shark spotted in the Long Island Sound has made its way to Rockaway and is terrorizing beachgoers? Last count, we lost 27 swimmers with no remains found. Or maybe spread some rumors about the terrible crime wave sweeping the Rockaways. The awful mobsters have infiltrated the peninsula and are making life miserable for tourists with the rampant pickpocketing, extortion and Game of Thrones-like murders. Who am I kidding, its beautiful here, come one, come all. Well one thing is for sure, suddenly it’s summer!

Looking fit and stylish, Marie Huber was spotted at Fit Food Kitchen/Gliders gym and Eddy Pastore was rocking a vintage Rockaway Times t-shirt as he kept an eye on erosion from the boardwalk. You never know where you’ll be spotted. Rock those tees!
Planting seeds is a fun way to garden—especially if you have a large area to cover. Once again, have a plan. Do you have full sun, part sun, shade? Early blooms, later blooms, etc., etc.? Be sure seed packets are labeled for current year, and read package directions. My experience is that marigolds and zinnias are easiest and they grow well in Rockaway. They are also nice for cutting; both require sun—at least four hours a day. A sunflower, if you have the space, is fun. (My hollyhocks were difficult and they bloom every other year). Another way to use seeds is to start them indoors in little pea pods. Water regularly with a fine spray until little plants grow and then plant them outdoors. Zinnias, however, like to go right into the ground. Again, water them lightly and frequently. Don’t fertilize until well estab-
lished. If you planted impatiens and they seem to be doing well, pinch them back using your thumbnail and forefinger— just the top of the flower. (An aside, earthworms are good for the soil—they keep it aerated). If you have an infestation of leaf-eating critters, you can buy praying mantises to help you control them. I don’t like pesticides. A weed is anything you don’t want in your garden. Take them out by the root with a tool aptly called a weeder.

I saw my daughter getting married, I saw my grandchildren, I have people that come up to me and say, ‘grandpa, grandpa.’ Every single one of those that have gone on, that we’re remembering today because we made a vow to never forget, never had that. They don’t know what it is to hold your grandchild in your arms, let alone your own children. They were denied that and it’s unfortunate. However, that does not mean that this liberty of ours will not continue because we are a strong people in a strong country. Remember, we do this because those who have been spoken about previously made those sacrifices so we can enjoy the sun today.” While the parade ended at Memorial Circle, many of the participants later gathered at the Doughboy statue on Beach 94th Street for a concluding ceremony.

Memorial Day has come and gone, but the holiday weekend wouldn’t have been complete without the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremonies that remind people that the liberties we enjoy all summer, and each day, are not free. On Monday, May 27, Monsignor Bracken led a Mass at St. Francis de Sales, followed by a ceremony outside at the Four Chaplain’s memorial to kick off the American Legion Daniel M. O’Connell Post #272’s annual Memorial Day parade. The parade, which included local veterans, school groups, bands and more, was kept short this year, as it only went to Memorial Circle on Beach 121st, but the impact still resonated through all who lined the streets to show their support. Hundreds gathered at Memorial Circle to remember the local men behind the names on the 35 plaques in the park who gave the ultimate sacrifice when fighting for this country. And this year, a 36th plaque was unveiled. U.S. Army Air Corps Pvt. Daniel Edward O’Connor, a local who died when the SS. Dorchester sank during World War II on February 3, 1943, was recognized and remembered with his own plaque which was unveiled by Msgr. Bracken. The ceremo-
ny included the playing of the National Anthem by Scholars’ Academy, a reading of the names of the men, the playing of taps, and a prayer and speech led by Larry Eichen, a 97-year-old Jewish veteran who served with the U.S. Navy during WWII.

A majestic scene of 114th Street beach block. It’s not exactly the same these days, but many of the houses are still there today. This postcard traveled to Jacksonville, Florida. Little League Swings On Rockaway Little League is in full swing. This past holiday weekend was jam-packed with games at Fort Tilden. On Saturday, eight games were played. Anowi Surfwear Brings Comfort & Style to Surfer Girls By Nicole Taylor-Lang
As New York City’s only surfing beach, Rockaway has become a popular surf destination. Arverne’s very own Iwona Kapcia recognized that and took the plunge by moving to Rockaway five years ago to be closer to the waves. She fell in love with surfing while visiting her sister
in New Zealand and when she came back to NY, she knew it was something she wanted to pursue. “At first I did not know there was surfing and surf schools in NY,” she said. “Rockaway is a hidden gem.” It wasn’t long before she took lessons with Locals Surf School here in Rockaway. “It completely changed my life and I did not expect it,” she
said. However, it would change her life in more ways than one. Through surfing, Kapcia met her partner, David Sierra, who owns Sierra School on Beach 65th. It would also play a big role in her career as a fashion designer. Kapcia, now an avid surfer, just had one issue with the sport— the outerwear. The sport that was once male-dominated, now has many more females riding the waves. Kapcia soon realized that she had a calling to make swimwear functional, comfortable and fashionable for female surfers. “I first wanted something that truly stays on since I’ve had a few bathing suit malfunctions,” Kapcia explained. So she started designing surf wear that would make woman feel comfortable in and out of the water—Anowi Surfwear. “Wearing the wrong swimwear or clothing can actually limit your flexibility and range of motion,” says Kim Perry, a North Carolina native, a surf instructor and ambassador for Anowi. “Surfing is like doing yoga and dancing all at once.” When it came to design, Kapcia wanted to make sure her clothing was comfortable, flattering, functional and eco-friendly. or just your daily activities. The collection includes four pieces—rash guards, leggings, bikini bottoms and tops—that you can mix and match with the differ-
ent styles and designs. “I think the patterns and designs are also flattering for many body types, and this is awesome because us surfer gals come in all shapes and sizes,” Perry said. The Second Skin Surf Leggings give coverage from sunburn and are a nice alternative to a bikini bottom. They even have a back pocket where you can store a small sunscreen, plus a band inside to tie your key for safe keeping. Another option is the High Leg Surf Bikini Bottoms that won’t fall off or ride up into places you don’t want. The Beach 67 Surf Bikini Top, designed like a sports bra, and Second Skin Rash Guard also compliment the female figure. “The bikini top being a halter neck is great as you can't pop out of it. ly also plays a big role in Kapcia’s company. The fabric used is spandex and polyester that is made from the yarn of recycled post-consumer products like plastic bottles. The manufacturer of this material is called REPREVE® which is made right here in the U.S. This high quality material helps reduce water consumption, energy consumption and greenhouse gases. Also, as an extra benefit, the material is certified to give UPF 50+ sun protection. “I feel so much better, personally and ethically, knowing I’m using sustainable materials,” Kapcia said. “I wish that everything that was being produced today was produced as responsibly and sustainably as possible,” Linn Edfelt, a surfer and Anowi supporter from Sweden, said. “The fact that Anowi is produced from recycled materials and that the producer knows exactly who is making them (and that they are not people from poor countries, far away, who are being exploited) makes me respect and prefer Anowi even more.” Living in NY and being so close to the Garment District, Kapcia wanted the clothes to be produced right here. The apparel is assembled with a four-person operation in Manhattan. As much clothing is outsourced from other countries, Kapcia wanted to give fellow New Yorkers the opportunity to produce the Anowi brand instead. When it came down to the name, Kapcia went through some ideas. She soon decided on Anowi, which is Iwona, her first name spelled backwards. “My name backwards sounded Hawaiian,” she said with a laugh. It’s like my Hawaiian alter-ego.” Anowi officially launched in March and has already caught the attention of female surfers and Kapcia hopes that others will give to sport a try. “You can learn at any age, and you never know, it might change your life,” she said with a smile. It’s A Long Long Way from Clare to Here IRISH HOOPSTERS VISIT BREEZY Ireland’s Ennistymon hoopsters, of the vintage type, arrive in Breezy Point on Saturday, June 1 to celebrate the 27th Annual Frank Gallery Basketball Tournament. Dan Leary, who played with the Claremont Admirals in 1982 and led them to success in the Irish Basketball Association’s National League Qualification, is the host for the event at Breezy Point. All visitors will be accommodated in the community. Frank Gallery was a key personality on and off the court, playing for six years in Division 2 of the Irish National Basketball League. He died in a motor accident in 1993. There are more ties to Ennistymon than Leary’s Irish ball playing experience. A collection of Graybeards visited Ennistymon in 2004 and took part in the Frank Gallery Tournament, and some eight years later, after Hurricane Sandy struck, the GPA (Gaelic Players Association) and Aer
Lingus collaborated to provide a work crew and helped complete some major reconstruction work which was the subject of a TG4 documentary. Irish government funding was also provided. Games this weekend will be at the St. Thomas More court and the outdoor courts in Breezy. A tournament reception will be held at the Sugar Bowl on Saturday. Over the 27 years, the tournament has been graced at different times by all of the club’s former U.S. collegiate players: Dan Leary (University of Rochester), Kevin Darmody (University of South Carolina), Luke Murphy (Hofstra), Curtis Gibson (Missouri University of Science and Technology- Rolla), and Ed Randolph (Roger Williams University). Randolph continues to live in Ireland and is father of current Irish soccer goalkeeper, Darren Randolph.

A traveling party of 22 will descend on Breezy Point on May 31. The tournament format will have a 3 on 3 tournament on Saturday, June 1 with mixed teams made up from the visitors and local Breezy and Rockaway hoopsters, and on Sunday, Claremont Admirals
Old Stars will play a Breezy Point Select team for the Frank Gallery Trophy 2019. The event helps keep the game of basketball alive, but more importantly, it helps renew friendships and strengthens the bonds between the communities.
