A Ferry Warm Welcome By Katie McFadden
That’s not a mirage you see floating upon Jamaica Bay. The ferry is back! After being taken away at the end of 2014, the ferry made its triumphant return to Rockaway on Monday as part of the new citywide service. “Where else can you see so many smiling faces going to work at 5:30 in the morning?” Arverne resident Glenn DiResto said as he joined dozens of commuters, officials and news reporters on the first official trip to Pier 11 in Manhattan on Monday, May 1. The skyline views of Brooklyn and Manhattan were hindered by fog, but the smiles on board set the tone for the much-welcomed hour-long ride. Some utilized the Beach 108th landing’s ticket machine to buy their first hard ticket at $2.75 each, but others utilized the new NYC Ferry App, where digital tickets can be purchased. The first boat, H201, was equipped with a full concession featuring snacks, beverages, tap beer ($6)
and tap wine ($8), plus random items like sunscreen, coloring books, cameras and more. The boat also had one bathroom and will have WiFi in the future. Other boats reportedly did not have a full concession, but will eventually. A total of 1,828 people rode the Rockaway route on day one. Many boarded bright and early

on Monday for the novelty of the very first ride. Others who fought hard to see the ferry return, were celebrating the comeback. One decided it would be a good way to celebrate their birthday. Some out-of-towners stumbled across the boat and saw it as a good tourism option. And many were simply overjoyed for a quick, comfortable alternative to the A train

as they made their way to work. Joel Mirrer of Belle Harbor, who works in Midtown, was on board to test out the commute. “This is a lot easier than my usual drive to Brooklyn. I’m looking forward to riding it more, especially in the summer,” Mirrer said. Kimberly Brown of Far Rockaway took the new free shuttle service from Beach 44th Street to the ferry landing at Beach 108th Street. She was on her way to the first stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, where she works nearby. “It works — that should be the ferry motto. It’s very convenient,” Brown said. “It feels great to ride it again. I’ve been waiting for it to come back ever since they stopped it.” For Desiree Maple, of Far Rockaway, who was heading to work in Manhattan, the ferry ride is painless. “I usually have to take two trains to where my building is. For people with disabilities or knee issues, those subway steps are brutal. This is a painless ride.” The ride to Sunset Park or Continued on page 3

A FERRY WARM
Continued from Page 2 the east side of Lower Manhattan may not work for many, but some have already found ways to make it work for them. Those that work closer to midtown can disembark the Rockaway ferry at Pier 11 and get a free transfer to the new East River service, which stops in Brooklyn, and then East 34th Street in Manhattan. Others may have to connect to the bus or subway once they’re in Manhattan, which comes with an additional fare. Others took advantage of paying an extra dollar to bring their own bike on board the boat, which is equipped with bike racks. Citi Bikes are also available to rent at the Pier. Some plumbers that were on board for the first ride, had an extra mile to go to their worksite once they
THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017 reached Pier 11, but they found their own unique way to make the connection. “I’m taking an electric scooter,” union plumber Robert Shaw, of Rockaway Park said, as he pointed to the folded device under his seat on the boat. “I’m glad they added the 5:30 a.m. trip, since we have to be at work by 7 a.m. This is just a quicker ride to Manhattan. Today is a trial and hopefully it works for us. I was on the first ferry after Superstorm Sandy and I’m on the first ferry back today. This is very exciting,” Shaw said. Coworker Mike Lobodi chimed in saying, “This is 100 percent better than dealing with all the stops and problems on the train. We get to bypass that all now. This is almost like door-to-door for us.” Others who fought to bring the ferry back, were on board to check out the fruits of their labor. Laura Deckelman, who rode the previous ferry every day to take photos and promote the ride, was on board with her camera. Longtime ferry activist Joe Hartigan was also enjoying the ride. “This is great. The mayor kept his word and we were the first route
back. What I’m really happy to see is that at least half of the people on the boat are actually going to work. I’m glad we pushed for the 5:30 a.m. start. I’m happy to see people from all parts of the peninsula, and to know that people even used the shuttle bus. This is all good!” Hartigan said. Marty Ingram of the Community Board 14’s Transportation Committee was also on board. “We worked hard to get this going and we’re happy to see this happen. It’s definitely uplifting for the whole community and it has given us another dimension to transportation in a transportation desert. We’re happy to see the mayor deliver on his promise, and deliver it early. To witness this is really cool,” Ingram said. Margie Henderson, of Breezy Point, took the first ride to celebrate her 80th birthday. “I just wanted to be the first one. It’s
Page 3 something I really wanted to do for my birthday. I’m very grateful and happy for the young people that will have this nice way to commute to Manhattan. This is truly a gift,” she said. While the morning rides went off without a hitch, there was some trouble on the rush hour return trips. According to commuters, dozens were left behind at Pier 11 for both the 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. trips as the boats were overcrowded. Ferry officials responded, saying, “Because the cost is lower than previous ferry fares ($2.75 as opposed to $4 -$6) and there is an increase in excitement surrounding NYC Ferry, rider turnout has been higher than expected, so boats filled to capacity.” NYC Ferry is very receptive to input and offered to provide an extra boat for the next rush hour shift if the issue continued, but by day two, the evening boats were not at capacity. Those who have concerns can contact them at www.ferry.nyc/contact. For the full ferry schedule, see Page 35. Photos by Katie McFadden and Kami Leigh-Agard

Jonesing To Keep Up With The Joneses
As someone who battles with maturity (I never tire of colonoscopy jokes and anything related) I’m not an authority on what makes a grown-up. But the beauty of being a columnist is you get to spout on about things you have no clue about. It’s kind of like being president. Hey, take it easy, I didn’t say which president. Being mature doesn’t necessarily mean giving up things. Giving up on staying out to the wee hours isn’t a sign of maturity. It just means your body is now telling you to cut it the hell out. Being mature doesn’t mean giving up basketball for golf. It just means you have bad knees or hips. Being mature doesn’t mean you have to
give up Frosted Flakes. Being mature means you put the box way back in the cabinet so it takes some effort to reach. My Be Well, Be Happy zen zone says you have reached a certain level of wisdom and maturity when you stop worrying about what other people have. And you stop worrying about how you are perceived by them. Of course, such wisdom hasn’t yet crept into some 40 and 50-year-olds who still live to impress. Unfortunately, it often works. Someone drives a fancy car or lives in an extravagant house and others think highly of that person or they envy them. If you are impressed or crazed with envy, your road to maturity can be made smoother by considering an item from the
Facts You Probably Don’t Need feature we run each week. If you have $10 in your pocket and no debts, you are wealthier than 25 percent of Americans. There it is. There’s a one in four shot that the person you see with all the bling is up to their eyeballs in debt. They’ve over-mortgaged the house, they get credit cards just to pay off other credit cards. Debt collectors have them on speed dial. I know they drive an expensive car, but I do not know if they sleep at night. So point is, there’s a good chance you’re wasting your admiration or envy on a fraud. Which brings me to Facebook, or Facebook-induced psychosis. Yes, I dabble in psychology and have a diploma from the National Enquirer and a university named after a president. Take it easy, I didn’t say which one.
Psychosis is a break from reality and so is Facebook. It’s the place where everybody’s kids are perfect. That might depress you because you know your kids are not. Everybody goes on the best vacations and you are stuck at work. That guys stayed at the Ritz and you were at a Motel 6. You spiral into depression because you think Facebook is real. Or maybe you’re the one showing off and feel the need to. Well, stop. Put down the drink. Basically, the whole thing is set up to compare ourselves to others. It is high school revisited. And we left high school. Treat Facebook like a pitcher of margaritas. Overindulge sometimes, go ahead. But not every time. Stop jonesing about keeping up with the Joneses. Now go online and like our Facebook page. We need to know you really like us.

***** The ferry is back! After being taken away in the fall of 2014, the ferry made its triumphant return on Monday, May 1, as part of a citywide ferry service, and it’s better than ever. It was smooth sailing on Monday as many took the inaugural ride, but there were a few hiccups on Monday evening when several commuters were left at the Pier 11 dock because the boat was at capacity. By Tuesday, ferry operators said they would have an additional boat if necessary. Have some feedback? Reach out to ferry.nyc/contact ***** Don’t have plans for Saturday? Now you do. Taste of Rockaway Beach is back and this time there are 31 participating restaurants, so bring your appetite! The event, on May 6, starts at noon and goes until 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at any of the participating businesses for $15 in advance or $20
on the day of. Don’t miss the great day of food and fun. ***** Need some other reasons to celebrate this weekend? Break out the tequila and tacos on Friday. It’s Cinco de Mayo! And after the Taste of Rockaway on Saturday, stop by your nearest pub for a Mint Julep and catch the Kentucky Derby. Race time is around 6:30 p.m. ***** The 100th Precinct Community Council’s 8th Annual Chili Contest on Friday, April 28 was a big success. Three judges had the tough job of trying dozens of entries and choosing their favorite. Jessica Luina of Councilman Donovan Richards’ Office was named chili queen, taking home first place. In second was Kevin Shannon of Coastal Yogurt, followed by Chef Caesar of PICO coming in third. However, there was also a crowd pleaser. Jason Keane Ten Eyck of RBNY Physical Therapy won the People’s Choice award. ***** Celebrity central! Tom Brady of the New England Patriots was spotted at Fort Tilden on Sunday. He was in town while one of his kids played soccer. Later that day, singer Patti Smith was spotted at
Uma’s along with MoMa’s Klaus Biesenbach. ***** Don’t forget your reservations! Mother’s Day is next Sunday, May 14. Check out some of our ads for ideas! Kennedy’s and Bungalow Bar are accepting reservations and Curran’s Superior Meats has some specials if you want to cook mom a nice dinner at home. You can also give mom a day of pampering at Nicole Frontera Beauty or Spa Rockaway. ***** The National Park Service says they "can neither confirm nor deny" when we asked them about a rumor a little birdie whispered to us. We hear the operators of the Riis Park Bazaar will be the chosen ones to rehab and revive the iconic bathhouse building. A number of groups submitted proposals but it seems the Bazaar guys will get the nod. Plenty more to go before it's official. The terms of the lease will still have to be worked out. Riis has enjoyed a great turnaround in recent years and the current Gateway bosses and the Bazaar team deserve applause. ***** Congratulations to our one of our salesmen, Frank Chimera and his wife, Carole, on 45 years of mar-
Page 7 riage! They’ll be celebrating their anniversary on Saturday, May 6. ***** Our annual Summer Guide will debut on Thursday, May 25. It's our biggest BY FAR, projected to come in at 120 pages. It will be a keeper, chock-full of information and articles. And it's free - thanks to our advertisers who make it all possible. They know it's the can'tmiss publication of Rockaway. (No, we still haven't chosen a cover! There are so many great photos to choose from). ***** We're sad to report the sudden passing of Manny Fiallo Jr. on Tuesday. Manny was heavily focused on making Far Rockaway a better place. He founded the Stack Bundles Stop the Violence Basketball tournament. He was also part of Child Center of NY, Beach 41 Cornerstone, Fathers Alive in the Hood Movement, the Swim Strong Foundation, the Police Athletic League and more. He will be missed by many. A candelight vigil will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 at the Beach 41st Cornerstone Community Center (426 Beach 40th Street).

Bigger Than Ever:
Taste of Rockaway is Saturday!
By Katie McFadden
Your stomach isn’t going to be able to handle this. The spring 2017 Taste of Rockaway Beach is here and with 31 participating eateries, it’s going to be a doozy. On Saturday, May 6, get ready to bring your appetite. The eighth installment of this much-anticipated biannual food event is going to take your legs—and your belly—to new limits. The event has almost doubled in size, from 17 stops last fall to 31 on Saturday. This time around, the route has expanded to include restau-
rants and businesses all the way from Beach 72nd to Beach 109th Street, but the great ticket price of $15 in advance or $20 the day of, remains the same. You can purchase your ticket at any of the participating businesses or online at www.rockawayunion.org. Tickets purchased online can be picked up at Thai Rock (375 Beach 92nd Street) and there is a small additional fee. The ticket allows each participant to get a sampling of what each restaurant has to offer on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. The lineup this year includes 101 Deli, A + A Chinese Cuisine, Beach Bistro 96, Bungalow Bar & Restaurant, Chicks To Go, Ciro's Bakery & Pastry Shop, Coastal Frozen Yogurt, Community House, CROM Physical
Culture, Cuisine by Claudette, Elegante Pizza, Goody's, Liquid Bread, Off Season, Pico's, PollynAnna Boutique, Rippers, Rockaway Beach Bakery, Rockaway Beach Golf Club (after 4 p.m.), Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services, Rockaway Brewing Company, Rockaway Love, Rockaway Roasters, Sayra's Wine Bar, Ship To Shore Wine Shop, Station RBNY, Surfside Bagels, Thai Rock, The Fat Cardinal Bakery, The Rock, The Swellife Fashion Truck, Uma's, Uncle Louie G and Zingara Vintage. And although they’re not officially part of the lineup, the FDNY Engine 266 firehouse near Beach 92nd, will be hosting a safety day and their top chefs will be cooking up some good eats for visitors. With so many choices, opting to walk or ride a bike along the way may not be such a bad idea. While the event has previously revolved around the Rockaway
Beach area, the limits have been expanded this time around with West Indian favorite Goody’s and Rockaway Beach Brewery joining in the fun near Beach 72nd Street and Coastal Frozen Yogurt on Beach 109th Street. Plus other eateries from Beach 116th and Beach 129th will be joining in by teaming up with some non-food Rockaway Beach-based businesses. The Rockaway Love yoga studio will be hosting Cuisine by Claudette. You’ll catch PICO at CROM Physical Culture. Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services will have treats from Ciro’s Pastry Shop. The brand new eatery, Rockaway Beach Bakery, will have its own in-store set-up, but there will be additional treats at the boutique PollynAnna. Also, while it may not be open for the season yet, the Rippers concession will be setting up shop in the courtyard of the boutique,

TASTE OF ROCKAWAY
Continued from Page 8
Off Season. Last year, surf shop Station RBNY hosted Whit’s End, but since Whit is busy cooking up delicacies at Riis Park, the wife of Station co-owner, Nigel Louis, will be cooking and serving up food at the store. Some restaurants that had opted out of previous events, have now rejoined, like A+A Chinese Cuisine. This weekend’s Taste of Rockaway Beach will be the first big community event since the launch of the new Rockaway ferry and event organizer and owner of Thai Rock, Robert Kaskel, thinks the ferry, has a lot to do with the added enthusiasm and participation this time around. “The number of participants this year is extraordinary. There’s a different vibe here. I’m feeling it and I think everybody is kind of responding to it. The ferry is bringing a lot of excitement to the Rockaways and I believe people’s desire to jump into this community event goes along with the same wave of excitement that the ferry is bringing,” Kaskel said. Hornblower, the company that operates the new ferry service, is even a sponsor of this year’s event, along with Lola Star, St. James Clothing, Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach and Feel at Home Vacations. Hornblower recently held a community meeting at Thai Rock to discuss how they can work with local businesses and organizations. It was at this meeting that businesses like Goody’s and the Rockaway Brewing Company, which have never been part of the Taste of Rockaway Beach due to their location, approached Kaskel and expressed interest in joining in. “This eagerness to join shows that this is an event that really brings the community together, brings the merchants together, and it’s even starting to attract people from outside of the Rockaways,” Kaskel said. Kaskel expects the turnout to be comparable to last year’s spring event, or even larger. Taste of Rockaway Beach occurs in the fall and spring, but the nicer weather in May draws in larger crowds each year. Kaskel says more than 2,000 people participated in the spring 2016
THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017
Page 9
event. “We’re figuring it’ll be about the same this year,” he said. While having 31 participating businesses this year may sound overwhelming, Kaskel believes having more options will dilute the crowds and wait times. “If we manage to sell out, there will be long lines, but we have a lot more places for people to go. If people start to get frustrated, they can take a walk on the boardwalk and go to a place that’s farther away and come back. It gives everything a chance to flow a little better,” he said. The only issue with growing bigger and better is deciding where to go. “You will need to strategize for sure. If you start right at noon and go until six, you’d need to go to five restaurants an hour. Even if you give yourself 15 minutes at each place, that’s only four an hour, and you’ll only make it to 24 places. I don’t think anyone is going to be able to go to all 31. It would be really difficult,” Kaskel said, not to mention, hard on the stomach. Having stops that range from Beach 72nd to Beach 109th will be a good test to see if the event can grow even bigger and possibly include other busy business areas around the peninsula in the future. “This is an experiment. This time we’re going to learn a lot about how the extremities of the event do, at Beach 109th and 72nd. If they have a good turnout, maybe we can include Beach 116th in the next one. If this does work, why not expand it to the whole peninsula?” Kaskel said. Taste of Rockaway Beach may continue to get bigger and better for years to come. Keeping with the goal of supporting the community as a whole, some may notice that this year’s ticket and promotional advertising, points in the direction of another fun event in Rockaway. The event logo, designed by artist Geoff Rawling, pays homage to the Poseidon’s Parade, which will happen on September 16 this year. “The Taste of Rockaway Beach is limited to certain times of the year, but we wanted to let people know that there are other great events that happen throughout the year,”Kaskel said.

Muay Thai Champion & CROM Owner Pens Memoir
By Kami-Leigh Agard
“Just like sparring in a Muay Thai boxing match, life is a fight. Every fight does not go
as planned, regardless how much you prepare. In a Muay Thai ring, yyou never know what yyour opponent is going to come with. You might get blindsided by a move you did not see coming like an elbow, a knee, a foot, and also, yyou have to steel yourself against the heckling supporters of your opponent, who want to see yyou fall and not get back up. Life is the same. It’s a challenge. Every day we are all fighting in the ring of life, and we have to be ready to face, not just our direct opponents, but elements in the outside world,” expressed renowned Muay Thai champion
fighter and CROM Physical Culture owner, Chris Romulo, as he shared what motivated him to take pen to paper and explain why he keeps getting up in his memoir, “Champions Uprising.” In “Champions Uprising,” Romulo, in a straight, no chaser endearing narrative, reveals his life’s battles both on the Muay Thai boxing ring and in life. Romulo’s parents are Filipino immigrants. His mother, Lucita, worked hard and sacrificed her own life’s vocational dreams to make sure that both he and his brother had the American Dream. She wanted them to go to college and fulfill what she thought their life’s goals should be, while still preserving their Filipino culture. His father, on the other hand, was

All these experiences redirected his life and purpose to be the man he is today — a champion fighter, husband to wife, Sarah, and father to sons, 19-year-old Jube and five-yearold Giovanni. So how did Romulo discover Muay Thai? “I got into Muay Thai when I was 21,” Romulo said. “I was

MUAY THAI
Continued from Page 12 full of unexplainable anger in my youth. One day I found myself in a street fight, in which I came close to losing my life, and it forced me to figure out how I could defend myself. So I started reading all sorts of magazines, hungrily searching to find out how I could be a better street fighter. So in one magazine, I discovered Muay Thai, which in the U.S. is referred to as Thai boxing. It was a full page ad touting a Navy Seal combat course, that said if you order these three VHS tapes and watch, practice and learn, you can become what they coined as an ‘unbeatable street fighter.’ I was a young adult and was like, ‘I’m sold!’ I thought that’s what I needed at the time to make sure nothing would happen to me in the streets again. “So my younger brother and I ordered the tapes, and drove my mom crazy as we would kick and punch, sparring with each other in the house. My mom would shout, ‘You are tearing my house apart!’ She finally kicked us out of the house and put us in the garage. We trained with each other for over a year. “The VHS box set essentially showed Muay Thai techniques, which basically is like boxing with the exception that you are using your hands, your elbows, knees and feet. “I had been in martial arts since I was eight-years-old, but didn’t start training in Muay Thai until my early 20s, when accidentally I discovered this gym. I was just walking around in downtown Manhattan, and found myself in front of this gym. I peeped in and saw a heavy punching bag and a makeshift boxing ring. I walked by a few times because I was curious about the gym, but too nervous to enter. It turned out to be TriStar, the first-ever Muay Thai facility in NYC. “I approached the only guy who was in there and asked, ‘What do you guys do here?’ He said, ‘We do Muay Thai.’ I joined and was immediately hooked. Today Romulo is a retired professional Muay Thai fighter, who boasts state titles both
THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017 as an amateur and professional, a North American title, two national titles and he even brought home the bronze medal in the World Muay Thai Championships in Thailand. However, after countless battles both won and lost, Chris retired and with his wife opened his first Muay Thai gym in Rockaway. “Sarah, originally from New Jersey, fell in love with Rockaway’s beaches. In 2006, we came down one bitterly, freezing winter day to check the community out, and immediately she said, ‘Let’s move here!’ My son, Jube likes to skateboard, and I saw the skate park on Beach 90th, and knew he would love it. So, we moved. “We started teaching Muay Thai classes on the boardwalk, as it became more popular, we then shared a space with jiu jitsu gym, Rock-Jitsu: Team Renzo Gracie on Beach 108th Street. Then we outgrew that space and decided to open a Muay Thai gym on Rockaway Beach Boulevard,” Romulo said. Then Superstorm Sandy struck. Romulo said he, Sarah and their children went to his parents’ home in Queens Village. “As we watched the news, Sarah cried and cried. We wondered what happened to our home and our gym. When we came back, everything was destroyed, but you know what? Sandy did not knock us out. We lost a lot, but came back bigger and better. That’s what this book is about. How we can all resurrect after all the punches, jabs and kicks we get blindsided by in life,” Romulo said. Romulo’s memoir, “Champions Uprising” comes out on Monday, May 15 and can be purchased on Amazon.com “After interviewing over 20 well-known Muay Thai fighters, coaches and people surrounding the sport on how they discovered Muay Thai, I felt like I had to share my story to motivate folks that need that spark to get up, even when life knocks you down. I too have gone through a lot in life, both in the ring and in life. However, my mantra is to keep getting up, no matter how hard the blow,” Romulo said.

Respect the Beach Dear Editor: I live in Belle Harbor and run the beach most mornings and enjoy spending time on the beach with my family yearround. More and more, I find myself being welcomed to the beach, by piles of empty beer cans and bottles. One can assume that these are being left behind by teenagers, from the previous night. There are two issues here: 1) The beach is used as a place for underage drinking- Always has been and trust that parents are discussing high-risk behaviour that comes along with that.
2) The kids are leaving their mess and smashing bottles, without care. This being a place with such a strong sense of "community," is what I really have an issue with. If they really cared about where they live, they'd clean up after themselves and not leave a mess for other people or broken glass for people to cut themselves on. Perhaps, these entitled youths should bring garbage bags with them and show some pride, in the place they live. Anonymous
Living In Luxury Dear Editor: Be advised the Rockaway Ferry is a taxpayer-subsidized luxury yacht for the rich white people of Belle Harbor so that they can drink their cocktails on the way to Wall Street. A Real Patriot Dear Editor: This past Sunday morning, my son and I pulled into Ft. Tilden for our 9 a.m. Rockaway Little League game, and my boy Matthew (7-years-old) got a great surprise! Tom Brady, arguably the greatest football player of all time was playing wiffle ball with one of his sons while his other son played in an 8 a.m. soccer game vs DTS (Dutch Total Soccer), as they usually do for the spring season on the fields closest to the FDNY & buses. My son Matt has become obsessed with Mr. Brady over the last year, collecting all his cards and memorabilia. As a Jets fan it hurts - YES it hurts a lot .... but I can't argue with the success and greatness the man has displayed over the years, and I tell Matt that. We pull our car up to him and I ask, "You sure look like Tom Brady.” He smiled and said, "I am, how are you doing?" My reply was, "my son is a huge fan of yours, can he say hello?" He said, "sure" and Matthew rolled
down the back window of the car and said hi to both he and his son. I asked what he was doing in Rockaway and he said to watch his kid’s soccer game that had started. I told him I wanted to respect his time with his children and we would go, he was appreciative and nice enough. My son ran on to the baseball field and told everyone! So, slowly people made their way over to see him. Though he did not want to take pictures, some of us were able to snap a shot! Chris LaFroscia

Locals Rock Out For Autism By Kami-Leigh Agard
What’s the best away to build awareness and fundraise for local organizations such as the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families Support Group, dedicated to raising the advocacy bar for individuals, families and caregivers with Autism Spectrum Disorder — than with
a rockin’ concert featuring local Irish musicians, rock bands and comedy acts? This past Saturday, April 29, Jon Kiebon a.k.a. Jammin’ Jon hosted Rockaway’s first Rockin’ Out For Autism event at Brendan’s Bar featuring an eclectic lineup of local performers including rock bands, Passive Aggressive NYC, Field Goal, Shan-
non Dinermen with The Skells, WondaFunk ; musicians, Arson Wells, Jammin’ Jon himself, John Baxter, Joe Popp and a hilarious comedy act by Shane Kulman, who also served as the mistress of ceremonies. Much props to Brendan’s Bar’s, Daniel Routledge & Shawn Hiya Dell for graciously hosting the event.
Judging from the photos, folks obviously had a rockin’ time! Stay tuned for the next Rockin’ Out For Autism event at the boardwalk concessions this summer. For more information about upcoming events, check out Facebook page, Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families Support Group.

Cashless Tolling Begins FAQ's Answered
By Kami Leigh-Agard
Both Rockaway bridges are now utilizing cashless tolling. The system took effect on the Marine Parkway and Cross Bay Bridges at 3 a.m. on Sunday, April 30. We’ve got answers for some questions you may have. What is cashless tolling? Cashless (or Open Road) Tolling is the collection of tolls from motorists who maintain posted speed limits on roads without any toll barriers, tollbooths or dedicated toll lanes. Drivers cross under a roadway gantry equipped with sensors and cameras to charge tolls via E-ZPass and Tolls By Mail, detecting classes of vehicles and applying the correct charge. How are E-ZPass customers affected?
Nothing will change for existing E-ZPass customers. Toll charges will continue to be deducted from your E-ZPass account when your tag is read. Account replenishment options will remain the same as well: credit card, bank account debit, check, cash, MTA Cash Reload Card, and Pay Per Trip from a checking account. Make sure to list all of your vehicle license plates on your E-ZPass account to avoid receiving bills for tolls you've already paid. Is the Rockaway Resident Rebate (RRR) program affected? No. The RRR program is unaffected by the switch to cashless tolling. What happens if you cross the bridges without an E-ZPass? Customers without E-ZPass will have their license plates photographed as their vehicles pass under the overhead gantry. A Tolls By Mail bill for the non-discounted cash-rate toll will automatically be generated and sent to the registered owner of the
vehicle by U.S. Mail on a 30-day cycle. You can pay these bills by mail, phone or in person, using a check, credit card, bank account or cash. Visit tollsbymailny.com or call 1-844-TBM-8400 for more information. Is there a penalty or fee for not paying a toll bill? Failure to pay a Tolls By Mail bill may result in late fees, fines, vehicle registration suspension and other enforcement actions. To check billing status, call: 1-844-TBM-8400. Why must your license plate be registered? To avoid paying extra for tolls. If your E-ZPass tag is not read properly at the toll facility, cameras will photograph your license plate. If your license plate number is not registered to your E-ZPass account, you will receive a bill for the non-discounted, full-priced toll amount in the mail. But if it is registered, your E-ZPass account will automatically be charged at the normal, discounted rate.
Note that the pass has to match the license plate, otherwise you will receive an extra bill. Can the E-ZPass be mounted somewhere other than the windshield? No. Your E-Z Pass must be mounted on the windshield, otherwise it may not be read by the antenna. If this happens, cameras will photograph your license plate, and the registered owner of your vehicle will receive a bill. How to view your account history? You can always check your account status by calling 1-800-333TOLL. You can view, save or print your current toll transaction and payment information anytime by logging into your account at e-zpassny.com. You can elect to receive free monthly statements by e-mail, or bi-monthly statements by mail for $6 per year. For further questions, call 1-800333-TOLL, or visit e-zpassny. com or speak to someone at any E-ZPass Customer Service Center.

Up-and-Coming Musician Tall Juan Calls Rockaway Home By Katie McFadden
Tall Juan just finished up performing at popular California music festival Coachella, is gearing up for a world tour and is ready to drop his debut album, “Olden Goldies” on May 5. Joining the ranks of other up-and-coming artists like Mac DeMarco and Lewis Del Mar, this promising musician also calls Rockaway home. Originally from San Antonio de Padua in Argentina, Tall Juan, born as Juan Zaballa, found himself moving to New York about five years ago. He spent some time living among the Latino communities of Queens such as Jackson Heights, where he befriended fellow musician Juan Wauters of Uruguay. Tall Juan spent some time playing with Wauters’ band, The Beets, and was inspired to start his own music career. After spending a while crashing at a practice place with fellow musicians in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where the living conditions were not ideal, Tall Juan wanted to find a place that felt more like home. Tall Juan had first heard about Rockaway through a little band called The Ramones. He had been a big fan since the age of eight and the Queensbased punk rockers have had a big influence on Tall Juan’s own music. When he moved to New York, he started going to Rockaway to use the beach and when his friends suggested moving to Rockaway, he was right on board. “We went to see this house, which was beautiful, and started going late nights to check out the neighborhood. We didn’t know if it was the right move initially, but we finally did it and came out here and I think it was perfect,” Tall Juan said. He’s called Arverne home for about three years. One of Juan’s former roommates was Mac DeMarco, another new artist who has made a name for himself in recent years. The Canadian-native drew some attention to Rockaway after giving out his address

in one of his songs. Juan says DeMarco moved to Los Angeles about six months ago, but fans still come to the house looking for him. “They come and I tell them that that I’m sorry, he’s not here anymore, but I give them things he left behind like old sunglasses to keep,” Tall Juan said. Before leaving, DeMarco helped Juan to record his own music and invited him to be his opening act for some shows. “We’re still good friends. He helped me whenever he could,” Juan said. When not busy touring across the country or world, Tall Juan retreats back to Rockaway. Some of his favorite local spots include Last Stop, Breezy Shakes and Dogs, Plum Tomatoes, Goody’s, and the beach, bay and boardwalk. “It’s really nice to hang out and walk along the boardwalk now that it’s back. The beach is the best part of Rockaway of course, but I also like where I live near the bay. I like to watch the ducks and swans there and being close to the wildlife reserve. When I was in Argentina, I was away from the city in an area that was like the Rockaway of Buenos Aires, so I really feel at home here,” he said. He’s also found it to be a good spot for inspiration. “I wrote maybe half of the songs on my album, right in my room in Rockaway. A lot of the time I would go to the beach for a

walk in winter and come back with an idea,” he said. His new album even has a song called “Far Rockaway” and the idea for his album name, “Olden Goldies” came from a neighbor. “I was at this new 99 Cent store across from Goody’s for its grand opening and they were playing this really cool, old hip-hop music and we told the owner that we liked the music and he said, ‘this is the olden goldies.’ We though that was really cool. My friend who helped me with the album, Matthew Volz, was with me and said, ‘whenever you put out an album, you have to name it that.’” So he did. “Olden Goldies,” Tall Juan’s first full-album, drops Friday, May 5. The album, which includes 15 songs, will be released by BUFU Records, a small label owned by Ben Katzman, who also lives in Arverne. The album has been in the making for about three years. “Since I started playing music, I recorded a few demos and I did one recording in a professional studio, but I didn’t like the results, so I decided to record everything again and I think it came out way better. I really like the vibe,” Tall Juan said. Tall Juan says his lyrics are inspired by love, heartbreak and social issues. “I try to make it as personal as I can,” he said. He also says he doesn’t have a particular sound, as it is always
changing due to different influences. “When I was inspired by Juan Wauters, he used a nylon string guitar, so I started using that too, and then I started playing with a classical guitar, playing rock and roll with nylon strings. I don’t have a particular sound, though. It’s changing all the time. I really like the vibe of The Ramones and other Queens artists, like Paul Simon, but I just recorded a song that sounds African. I’m still on my way to finding my own sound,” he said. You’ll be able to hear Tall Juan’s sound at his album release party on Sunday, May 14. He’ll be performing at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg (146 Broadway). Tall Juan will play songs from his new album, but the show will also be a Rockaway musician showcase, also featuring Ben Katzman’s DeGreaser, WILD YAKS and others. The show starts at 9 p.m. and goes on until midnight. This 18 and over event is $10 and tickets can be purchased at http://ticketf.ly/2o7AaPj The Brooklyn show will be the last chance to see Tall Juan in the area, before he heads out on his world tour. In April, the new artist was given the opportunity to play among some of the most famous musicians out there at California’s Coachella Festival. Now he’s taking his music around the world, hitting stops in France, Spain, Germany, UK and the Netherlands, starting May 18 through mid-June, followed by a tour in Japan. Tall Juan hopes to inspire others through his travels. “Being able to travel and do what I like to do is a dream. I remember how happy I would be to go see live shows and I felt so inspired to do something like that. I would love to be able to share that with others and make them feel the same way,” Tall Juan said. For more information about Tall Juan, check him out on Facebook or TallJuan.com. Schools Get Upgrades Due to PB31 Funding
Congratulations to local schools that will get much-needed upgrades due to Participatory Budgeting District 31 funding. For the 2016-17 PB cycle, Councilmember Donovan Richards’ office dedicated $2 million of its capital discretionary funding in the 2017-18 budget to empower local residents to decide how their tax dollars get spent in the community. After months of community and delegate meetings, 4,799 voters selected the winning projects from each side of the district. In Southeast Queens, PS 132 was awarded $1 million in funding for a new kitchen. In Far Rockaway, Village Academy will receive $500,000 towards their Greenhouse Project and another $250,000 for technology upgrades. PS 42 will receive $250,000 for an Engineering Computer Lab Upgrade. “I’d like to thank everyone who got involved to ensure that Participatory Budgeting succeeded once again, especially the students and faculty of our local schools. It is crucial that we engage our youth in the political process and prepare them to be the future leaders our city needs and deserves,” Councilmember Donovan Richards said.

Project:OM
By Paulette Mancuso & Helen Kilgallen
Ocean Bliss Yoga had its fortunate beginnings in Mrs. Elaine’s Dance Studio. It is with sadness and joy that we remember Elaine especially in May when we honor mothers and the “mother” in all of us. We are participating in a collaborative effort: Project:OM hosted by Manduka (a yoga specialty mat, clothing and accessories company) and Susan G. Komen (breast cancer research organization) by scheduling a donation-based class on Friday, May 12, 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the Studio on the third floor of
the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, in honor of Elaine. This yoga class will be open to everyone. No experience necessary. Come one, come all. We will guide you in a healing yoga class with gentle awareness. It is a great honor to host an event that will support breast cancer research. There is healing in coming together as a community and setting an intention for a CURE. (For more information, go to www. projectOM.com) While we usually use this space in The Rockaway Times to offer ideas and feelings in a “be well, be happy” vein, it feels right to bring awareness to this project because of our con-
nection to Elaine and because of the many people we know in our community who have been touched by this disease. We can only bring our hearts and minds to a focused intention: to overcome. Energy follows intention. So let’s put out a strong unified intention not only on May 12 and Mother’s Day weekend, but every day of the month – whenever it comes to mind. “project:OM is a mindful movement to drive positive change on an epic level.” This time is also a reminder to be there for those who are going through any type of illness, depression, harsh times. Taking a few moments to think about what a person might need or want individually, and then carrying it through is not only for that person, it also promotes a flourishing of goodness within ourselves. And when we feel good, we are more and more inclined to give more to others. It is a wonderful circle of giving, connection and moments
of happiness. It is important to think about what the person might want or need, and not just what we want to give. (Like buying someone a pink sweater – your favorite color – and then realizing “oops, she detests the color pink!”) Mindfulness in everything we do, say and feel is a practice. Calling out all of the habits that have come about through the years, making an effort to “be” a different way and be mindful of each and every act, word, thought and feeling is a mighty aspiration, but worth working towards on a daily basis. Let’s join together this month to remember and put forth support for this project and other organizations that do great work on behalf of each one of us. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful for what you have and what you do not have. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

A Luddite
To advertise in THE ROCKAWAY TIMES call 718-634-3030 ads@RockawayTimes.com
Back in the early 1800s, groups of English workers called "Luddites," banded together and destroyed machinery, especially in cotton and woolen mills, that they believed was threatening their jobs. Some two hundred years later, the inexorable march of new technology and its accompanying diminution of human contact continue unabated. This past weekend saw the end of the era of human toll collectors on the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge with the advent of the MTA's new "cashless" tolling system. For the record, I am certainly not espousing the citizenry to rise up and tear down the electronic gantries that have replaced a working man or woman in a toll booth. That would be just plain silly as E-Z Pass was already well on the way towards ensuring their demise. It was just a matter of time. But I do believe that we should all take a minute to reflect on just how much "technology" has changed the world that we all live in. Today we enter an elevator and press the button for which floor we want to go to. However, elevators weren’t always operated by the riders.
The Rockaway Times Early elevators had operators who were in charge of getting the elevator where the passengers needed to go. By the mid-1960s, electronics made sure the days of the elevator operator were numbered. Years ago one could simply dial "0" on the phone and be greeted by a knowledgeable and friendly human voice who would be happy to assist you in finding the number of the party to whom you wished to speak. Today's automated answering systems accomplish the same task, minus the interpersonal human contact, but, push the wrong button or mumble a spoken word and you are quickly transported down a technological rabbit hole consisting of a never-ending series of verbal prompts. Are you old enough to remember pulling into a gas station and having an attendant cater to your fuel and other needs? "Clean your windows?...Check your fluids and tire pressure?" Not today. The automated fuel pumps require you to gas up and as for all the other amenities, you're on your own. Back in the day I use to frequent a savings bank where the tellers all knew me and I could make a withdrawal without being charged a fee. Today all the local ATM knows about me is my PIN and, depending which ATM I use, never forgets to tack on a fee at the end of the transaction which consisted of nothing more than asking for some of my own funds back! Even at the local supermarket the number of cashiers and packers are dwindling rapidly with the introduction of the self-checkout kiosks, which require you to check each item out and bag it yourself. I also fear that librarians will soon become a thing of the past with the new self-service check out and book return systems being put in place. The machine also tells you if you have an overdue fine on file and you can pay the machine right

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 26 then and there! Mention the "Dewey Decimal System" to anyone under the age of 30 today, and all you get back is a puzzled look as if you were speaking Greek. By the way, if you are interested in Greek, you will find it in the 400 language series of the library's classification (Dewey Decimal) system. Truth be told, the internet
and Google have already succeeded in making the old brick-and-mortar library almost obsolete anyway! As I said earlier, I am most certainly not a luddite when it comes to new technology. Actually, I firmly believe things will ultimately get better, despite our well-meaning efforts to continually improve them. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Our own Managing Editor Katie McFadden brought The Rockaway Times to the Middle East last week. She spent the week in the United Arab Emirates, touring around Abu Dhabi and Dubai. She was spotted making a new friend in the desert while sporting her Rock Times tee. Want to get spotted? If you don’t have one already, you can purchase a Rock Times tee at our office or at www.RockawayTimes.com. Spring is here and the Rockaway Civic Association has launched its project to restore the beach block gardens from Beach 109th Street to Beach 129th Street. If you remember, some of these blocks had beautiful gardens, which were wiped out by Superstorm Sandy. This past week, the Association kicked off the project on Beach 119th Street and last Saturday, April 29, began work on Beach 121st Street. All the work is being done by volunteers and the materials were obtained through donations. A group of Beach 121st Street residents and teenagers from various area schools participated in the work, supervised by Association board member Pat Wood. Among those who participated were Sean Hilgendorf and Teresa Crivo, both from Scholars’ Academy, Kaleign Burke from
St. Francis de Sales and Aislynn Barry from PS/MS 114Q. Residents Regina Overath and Darryl Graff also helped out. In addition to the satisfaction derived from a job well done, the kids also received community service credit for their volunteer work. This project relies on donations of time and money from the community. Fundraising events are planned, but the biggest help comes from the local residents who volunteer. Please make a donation today or volunteer a day on the weekends to help out. A Boardwalk Bake Sale is planned for Saturday, May 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tables will be set up at Beach 109th Street, Beach 116th Street and Beach 124th Street on the boardwalk. Dust off your best cake or cookie recipe and contribute. All proceeds go to the garden project.

Fix a Dripping Faucet Not all faucets are the same, so you may have to adapt this repair to your faucet needs. As a rule of thumb, if you have a faucet with two knobs, change them both at the same time. You will need the following tools: A tongue & groove pliers, screwdriver, needle nose pliers and an 1/8th inch allen wrench. Here is what you’ll need to do: 1 - Shut off both the hot and cold valves under the sink and open the faucet to allow it to drip dry. 2 - Remove the handle(s) by taking the screw cover off. Use either the screwdriver or the allen wrench (depending on your faucet) to remove the screw and lift the handle off the stem. 3 - Unscrew and remove the adjustment ring. 4 - Remove the cap by using a tongue & groove pliers, be sure
Page 29
to cover the cap with a cloth so you don’t scratch it. 5 - Unscrew the stem or pull out the cartridge (depending on your faucet). 6 - If the washers look to be damaged, replace the washers and reassemble. If the washers look to be in good shape, you should replace the whole stem (available at most hardware stores) and reassemble. 7 - Turn off both faucet knobs and turn on the valves under the sink. Then turn the faucets to remove any air from the lines. When you turn the faucets off again, the leak should have stopped. Note: When you remove the valves, pay close attention to how they came apart, reassembly is basically the same but in reverse. If you have an idea for future projects, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

Ingredients: - 1 cup of raw rice (regular white or brown rice) - 3 boneless and skinless chicken breasts. - 1 package of dry onion soup mix - 1 can of cream of mushroom soup - 3/4 onion, roughly chopped - 1 package of mushrooms, chopped (optional) - 1 bundle of spinach, chopped (optional) - 2 cups of water - Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Preheat your oven to 320 degrees. Lightly grease a casserole and place your raw rice evenly on it. Slice the chicken and place it over the rice. 2. Add the chopped onion. If you're going to use the mushrooms and the spinach, now it's the time to add them too. It'll add some extra vitamins to
the mixture! If you're not a fan of this combination, try other veggies instead. Just remember that when baking tomato or zucchini, you have to be careful because they add more liquids to the mix. 3. Mix the cream of mushroom soup, the dry soup mix and the 2 cups of water. Season to taste and pour the mixture over the rest of the ingredients. 4. Cover and cook for 1 hour. Uncover and cook for 1 hour. Let cool 10-15 minutes before serving.

Vertebrae Fractures
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
By Peter Galvin, MD
Vertebral compression fractures are the most common type of osteoporotic fractures and are associated with significant disability, morbidity, and mortality. Anyone who has had one will tell you that the pain can be severe and may last for months. In many cases only part of the vertebral body collapses, giving the vertebra a wedge-like shape. When this occurs in the mid or thoracic spine it causes the spine to bend forward giving the patient a stooped posture. Twenty five percent of post-menopausal women in the US are estimated to have had a vertebral fracture, and that figure increases with advancing age. Diuretics (water pills) have long been thought to play a role in
Page 33
osteoporosis and its related fractures. Recently a study was published about diuretic use and vertebral fractures. It used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, an ongoing study that began in 1976 and has enrolled 121,700 nurses aged 30-55 years. The analysis used data from 2002 and 2012 from 55,780 women who answered a questionnaire that was mailed to them. The respondents were asked about their use of thiazide diuretics (HCTZ, Hygroton) and loop diuretics (Lasix, furosemide) and their history of fractures. Thiazide diuretics are used in treating hypertension and heart disease and in older US adults. Hydrochlorothiazide or HCTZ is the second most commonly prescribed medication. Thiazide di-
uretics decrease urinary calcium excretion thereby improving calcium balance but may cause hyponatremia (low serum sodium). A number of studies have linked hyponatremia to an increased fracture risk. On the other hand loop diuretics, used mostly for heart disease and heart failure, increase urinary calcium excretion, which could lower bone mineral density, but rarely cause hyponatremia. The study found that women who took thiazide or loop diuretics had a one-and-a-half time greater risk of vertebral fracture. This result was surprising in that thiazides, because of their positive effect on calcium balance, were long thought to not be associated with fractures. The authors concluded that the increased fracture risk with thiazides was due to the side effect of hyponatremia. A low serum sodium activates osteoclasts, which are bone cells that break down bone, thereby thinning the bone and making fracture more likely. Loop diuretics were also associated with an increased fracture risk as was expected be-
cause they cause loss of calcium. Interestingly however was that thiazides caused an increased risk of vertebral fractures but a decreased risk of hip fractures. This difference between spine and hip fracture risk was thought to be from differences in mechanical loading, geometry, bone microarchitecture, and other factors. Other risk factors for osteoporosis were looked at and these include smoking, low calcium intake, low BMI (small, thin women), low or no physical activity, and race (white and Asian women have a higher risk). If you have osteoporosis or have an increased risk of developing it and are taking diuretics you might want discuss your use of them with your doctor. Remember too that thiazides can have other negative health consequences like raising blood sugar and lipid levels. But please always talk to your doctor before discontinuing any medication that you are taking. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Power of Silent Words “I’ve got words for you b*tch,” she said. I sprang up from bed startled, and raced up stairs to check on my daughter, who was peacefully snoring in her usual clock-like position. It’s amazing to see how she sleeps. Arms and legs splayed out in opposite directions like a peanut-sized grandfather clock. So... it was a dream. I gingerly snuggled into my daughter’s bed, careful not to wake her. As I stared at the ceiling, I reflected on everything she said to me in my dream. My daughter is a non-verbal eight-year-old with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and sometimes it is hard to read her thoughts as she stares at you with her saucer-sized eyes. This is what she said to me in my dream. “Mum I love you, but there are few questions I have and some things I need you to understand. “When I was diagnosed with ASD, I felt you became frightened of me and withdrew, burying yourself in work. I know you fought to get services to help me, but all I really wanted was YOU! You used to play with me, but then working, cleaning the house, running errands became priorities. “What happened to you and daddy? I was so happy when we all lived together under one roof. I know there were a lot of arguments, but I loved when together you both put me to bed and read a bedtime story to me. “I love when you brush my
hair, but I hate when the brush gets too close to my ears, so please be careful next time. I think it’s so funny when you shampoo my hair because you put on your swimsuit and get in the shower with me, coaxing me to allow the water to rain down on my head. “I love all your pet names for me: Pooh-pooh, pookie wookie, poopie woopsie and poops. I just get confused when you ask me, ‘Does my pooh-pooh need to make a pee pee, or a pooh pooh?’ “Also, when you guys are talking about me, please don’t

act as though I’m not right there listening. Just because I don’t talk, it’s not like I don’t understand everything you are saying. “When I flap my hands, don’t tell me to stop. I flap when I am frustrated or even when I am happy. Observe how I flap when I run up and down the hallway. I feel like a bird, waving its wings in gleeful abandonment. “I know you get nervous when daddy takes me skateboarding. I’m pretty good, almost as good or even better than him. So have faith that I won’t hurt myself. “I think you are beautiful mummy, so stop putting yourself down. When you come to pick me up from school, I feel so proud, even though I could see the anxiety creep into your eyes when you talk to my teachers. We both have the same big eyes, so it’s hard to hide our emotions. “And mum, one more thing. I’m not sure what happened between you and daddy, but I love you both the same. It’s just that daddy allows me to have fun, even if it means falling when I am skating. It’s all a part of learning. You on the other hand, act as if I am a piece of china, always afraid
The Rockaway Times that I will hurt myself. Please allow me to be free, and let’s start having fun together as a family.” As I reflected on my dream, I turned to stare at my beautiful daughter snoring in her drunken slumber. Tears rolled down my cheeks and I whispered to her, “I’m so sorry, my pooh. Mommy is going to start having fun with you.” Infinite thanks to everyone who came and shared at the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families support group this past Thursday, April 27 at Willderness Yard. Thank you William Francis and Kayla for graciously hosting and nourishing us with yummy food, drinks and a cozy atmosphere. Much obliged to our special guests, Shane Kulman for facilitating an eye-opening workshop on Powerful Parenting - The Secret of Joy; Channel View High School NEST program special education teachers, Maura Penteck & Dana That, for sharing vital information and inspirational anecdotes about their thriving students with ASD. Stay tuned for announcements about the next group in May! For more information email: ourartistichild@outlook.com or follow us on Facebook.

FROM THE WRITERS' CLUB OF PS/MS 114 HEAVENLY BODIES: PART 3 If there’s such a thing as “heaven on earth”, I’ve found it at The Writers’ Club at PS/ MS 114. Eyes meet mine transfixed. Brains, like sponges, absorb every little detail to enhance their writing. Hands wrap around pencils more enthusiastically than any joystick or iPhone. And, then essays like these are born. When we’re finished, we glance at our feet ready to dance around the room in the happy rhythm of creativity. I’m proud to have a hand in the creation of some of the most heavenly, young writers on earth. – Joan Diehl, Writing Teacher, PS/MS 114 EYES By Ava Abruzzo
“Oh, my God, look at those eyes!” “They are as big as saucers!” “She’s all eyes!” “Whose eyes does she have?” According to my mom, these were common comments heard from anyone who saw me when I was a baby. My eyes were big brown cookies on a tiny plate, no milk required for enjoyment. Mom told me that people would stop and admire my peepers all the time. They marveled at the size of them, compared to my tiny face. I may have grown into these eyes, but I still think they are the most interesting feature on my body. They say a lot about a person. The eyes tell a story. You are excited. You are lying. You are worried. Someone hurt your feelings. You are suspicious. You are frightened. The eyes don’t lie. They can’t lie. As Shakespeare said, “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” FEET By Hailey Impastato
Like John Bubbles, the famous tap dancer once said, “Listen to my feet and I will tell you the story of my life.” I agree with him because my feet tell my story… My feet have felt the grainy sand on Breezy Point beaches. My feet have felt the chilly ocean water in the Bahamas, between my toes. My feet have been sat on and licked all
over by my big dog, Charlie. My feet have jumped on trampolines. They’ve twirled up in the air and landed flat on their bottoms. They’ve gone on high relevé (your tippy-toes) when tap-dancing across the stage. They’ve run across the gym floor. But, the nicest thing they’ve done was spending quality time with my mom getting our nails done and painted beautifully… BRAIN By Julia Courtney
Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Einstein speaks the truth about me. My mother always says, “Julia is lost in her own world; she is the ‘imaginer’ in the family.” Often when I have a free moment, I find myself thinking about the many things I’ve imagined over the course of my life. When I was just a little girl, I would imagine being the oldest girl in the family so I would be recognized as “the big girl”. I would imagine I was a fairy flying all around the room, as graceful and as beautiful as a bird. I would imagine myself belting out the lyrics to songs in the church choir. I would imagine I would have another good-natured sister to play with and it happened - Lottie was born. In the fourth grade, I imagined getting the highest grade on the state tests. Now, as a tenyear-old, I imagine myself strutting down the hallways of middle school. Someday this brain of mine will be figuring out the cure for cancer, diabetes, arthritis and many other diseases. Someday, I will be telling others how I won the Nobel Peace Prize. But, today and always, I will be using my wonderful brain to imagine…. BRAIN By Adam Bishop
My father always says that I have the brain of William Shakespeare, probably because I always write poems about my life and family. But there are people who know less about my ambitions and

they tend to say that I have a brain of a scientist. Other people tend to call my brain “the brain of an archeologist”. But, in my opinion, writing is one of the best things I do with my brain. Often, I find myself daydreaming about what I have achieved in the past. When I read books without pictures, my creative mind thinks of settings and characters, using my brain to draw pictures in my head. My brain has gotten me A’s on tests and report cards. So far, my biggest achievement with my brain is getting into Mrs. Diehl’s Creative Writers’ Club… EYES By Delaney Laffler
Teddy Roosevelt once said, “Keep your eyes on the stars and feet on the ground.” He wanted us to dream big and work hard for our dreams. I took this to heart and have worked very hard to fulfill my dreams. My eyes tell my story. With these eyes of mine, I have seen a one-of-a-kind sunset—blood-orange and bright yellow as neon lights. I have seen the love in my parents' eyes when they look at me, as well as their disappointment when I do something malicious. These eyes of mine have seen coral reefs and snowy hills. My eyes have seen the medals, ribbons, and trophies form track, swimming, and volleyball. These eyes of mine have seen good grades, bad grades, and recently the acceptance letter to Genesis, my future middle school. I use my eyes to look at old photos and memories when I can’t bring them back. My eyes have feasted on the unique pieces of art at the Metropolitan Museum like The Triumph of Mordecai and Christ Bearing the Cross. Someday I hope these eyes of mine will see the doors of Harvard University and possibly even enter them. One day I hope these eyes of mine will be staring at the altar when I get married and cherish the eyes of my children…I want
these eyes of mine to tell my story… EYES By Michael Nestor
My mother always says my eyes sparkle like diamonds. Other people say they shine like the sun's rays. My eyes are one of my most prized possessions. I have had some pretty remarkable experiences through these eyes. I would like to share some with you. When I was three years old, my eyes witnessed my brother graduate from the U.S. Army. Watching my brother cross the stage in his awesome green uniform made me so proud. I think I saw a twinkle in his eye, too. A few years later, I saw my family congratulate me as I graduated from kindergarten. It was nice for my eyes to see their eyes sparkle with pride. I saw it also brought a tear to my mother’s eyes. My eyes have also seen some wonderful miracles like my newborn nieces and nephew, and the blessing of my First Holy Communion when I received the Body of Christ… HANDS By Samantha Yershov
For years, people have been telling me, “You have really small hands.” But, even though they’re small, they can be as strong as I like…One day I hope these hands will clutch my tennis racket and trophy as I win my first tournament. They’ll touch the keys of a grand piano as I play at Carnegie Hall. They’ll help me leap to greater heights as I do a grand jeté at a ballet competition. I hope that they will hold my very first published book. They will hold my diploma as I graduate from an Ivy League college. They will hold the keys to my law firm. And, one day, my small hands will hold my husband’s hands and my children’s hands as they struggle to keep me with them on their first day of school. These small hands will grow big enough to hold all of my dreams.

Natives Lacrosse in Action This past Sunday saw several LCRockaway Natives lacrosse teams in action, plus the boys and girls clinics. The dedication, hard work and commitment displayed by all players was apparent. The stick skills of all that have actively participated have increased tremendously and the scoreboard reflected the improvement. From our youngest Natives of 4-6 yearolds in the clinic to our 14-yearolds have all shown tremendous growth and development. The LCR NATIVES 8U GIRLS team had their season opener on Sunday, April 30 at Beach Channel High School and they did not disappoint! The girls competed against the Brooklyn lacrosse team's veteran Squad. They
scored early and often, end 7-1 Natives. The Kuhlmann sisters, Tess and Lucy each scored a goal. Emma Bevaqua stunned with multiple draw controls and also scoring her first goal. Keira Davey was a phenomenal end to end middle with a big early goal. Newcomers CeCe Franchock
and Belle Bagley were great on defense and do a mean cheer on the sidelines! Maria Tomasetti smiled her way through the game while she slipped past the defense! Maddie Youngberg surprised everyone with her stunning speed. Julia Schlageter, much like those who have come before her, had an immediate affinity for defending the goal. Nikki Sclafani scored as well off a perfect pass by Kayla Grosseto! Coach favorite, Leigh Bianco and Erin Hogg were impenetrable on defense, shutting down Brooklyn’s attack all afternoon. And don't be fooled, powerhouse Shea Mckeefry showed of her lacrosse genes and dominated at both midfield and attack. Isabelle, no longer the rookie, McLaughlin and Catherine Amimal Johnson tag teamed the attack and shut them down. They also contributed in the cheer section. Finding her way to the big leagues, Cordelia Monaghan made her way around the defense setting up the final goal of the day! You get the idea folks, these girls are a force to be reckoned with! The 10U boys played well and proved that working hard in practice pays off in games. Jack Butler led the team in goal and was helped by solid defense from Joe Giambra and Dino Tomassetti.
Ryan Calvo, Logan Monahan and James Nichtern helped the team control possessions by winning ground ball battles and heads up ball movement. The 10U offense was led by Colin Courtney, Michael Loccisano and Conor Lane. Coaches Alexis and Pat are happy with the effort from the team and believe the boys have a lot of potential at the 10U age group. The Girls 12U team took the field against Brooklyn Lacrosse. After having some trouble getting their shots past a tough Brooklyn goalie, the Natives were relentless on their re-defends, barely letting the Brooklyn team past half field before creating a turnover. The final score of the game was 12-0 with goals being scored by Emily Boyle, Caroline Brucella, Madelyn Hanley (2), Emily Harkins, Caitlin Moran (2), Maggie McNamee (2), Sammie Ostrander, Danielle Stamos, and Grace Sullivan. Also contributing on the attack and keeping the pressure on the Brooklyn defense were Grace Schramm, Ava Pontone, and Shannon Davey. Hustling all over the field playing both defense and offense were our midfielders Brigit Butler, Mary Youngberg, Maddy Sheridan, and Devin Parchment. The defense of Gillian Galvin, Kristen Hennessy, Megan Johnson, and Lily O'Neill held strong, marking their girls tight and winning ground balls in our defensive end. Sharing time in the goal and stopping all the shots that came their way were goalies Kate Hayes and Grace Sullivan. Great game Natives...keep working hard! (Submitted by the Lacrosse Club staff )

Mariners and Red Storm Continue to Sail After “Opening Day” Rockaway Little League enjoyed another funfilled "Opening Day" celebration while the Pico Mariners (Pee Wee Seniors) and the Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm (Minor Girls) continued to enjoy early season success. After Mother Nature dropped a deluge of rain, thunder and lightning before sunrise last Saturday, the weather dried up just in time for RLL’s annual gala. The parade, led by bagpiper John McManus, marched past the puddles and onto the field of dreams. After Kelsie Pye and Taylor Mahoney led the audience in our National Anthem, opening remarks were delivered by City Comptroller Scott Stringer, State Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer-Amato. That trio also threw ceremonial
first pitches before the first game for our Challenger division. The Challenger game also featured pitching by former major leaguer John Halama, who came on in relief of beleaguered starter (and master batting coach) Randy Koenig. As always, it was a joyful event. John Duggan and his crew managed to dry the fields enough to get in a few regular-season games as well. The first place Pico Mariners defeated the Belle Harbor Yacht Club A’s 15-3. It was a team effort with Matt McKnight leading the offense with three doubles and a triple. Strong pitching by Isahia Tawil and Jon Pesso and solid defense by Michael Haley and Justin Williams kept the A’s in check. The undefeated Bartoli Chiropractic Red Storm (5-0) had a solid

7-2 win over the Beach Bagels Wildcats on Sunday. Amazing hitting by Carly Intrabartolo and Nora Tubridy led the way along with some great defensive plays by Shea McKeefrey at third-base and Mary Doyle at first. Maeve Grace continued her good defensive plays along with Riley Mills and Falynne Parchment. Carly Intrabartolo stole a bullet hit by Noelle McElhinny of the Wildcats, with runners in scoring position at second and third. A great game was played by all the Red Storm girls. Also on Sunday, the L. Mahoney Real Estate Royals (Minor Boys) saw their spirited six-run rally in the top of the 6th fall short as they lost to the Stop & Shop Mariners, 14-9. The two Connors, McElhinney (single, home run) and Monahan

(single, double, 2 RBI), each rapped out two hits, as did Jonathan Lazo (single, double). Joseph Esposito (triple) and Dean Esposito (double) added extra base hits. Mr. OBP, Matthew Schneider, drew two more free passes and leads the team with 10 walks for the season. He also had a stellar game at the hot corner. Ben Gressel and Ryan Wiley swiped two bases each.
Owen Maloney made great defensive plays in right field. DIAMOND DUST: Photo Days are coming on May 17, 20 and 21.
