SUMMER 2021 CONCESSION LINEUP ANNOUNCED

Summer 2021 is shaping up to be a good one! Rockaway Bazaar, the new concession contract owners, have released their lineup of vendors for their first summer on the boardwalk, and some favorites, like Caracas and Rippers are set to return! Late last week, Aaron Broudo and Belvy Klein, owners of Rockaway Bazaar announced their vendors for the summer with some good news. “Having been awarded the downtown Rockaway concession RFP through NYC Parks, Rockaway Bazaar is psyched to report that Caracas and Rippers will be returning to their Rockaway Beach locations at Beach 106th and Beach 86th. Also returning are the majority of food vendors at Beach 97th along with a couple new (and local) additions,” they said. With Rockaway Bazaar winning the Parks Department contract for the concessions over the previous owners, Rockaway Beach Club, many were concerned over losing some of their favorite concessionaires. During a Franchise and Concession Review Committee hearing in January, hundreds attended and hundreds more wrote letters of support for the former concessionaires after Parks’ announcement of Rockaway Bazaar winning the contract. However, those from Rockaway Bazaar committed to keeping most of the concessionaires the same. Both Caracas and Rippers were overjoyed to put those fears of leaving to rest. “Dear New Yorkers! We want to let you know with so much excitement that #caracasrockaway will re-

open this summer. We want to deeply THANK everyone that supported us, cared for us and followed up during the beginning of the year when things were uncertain about this summer,” Maribel Araujo, owner of Caracas said. “We are super happy to be back and celebrate our 11th summer in Rockaway Beach with y’all.” Caracas will be returning to Beach 106th along with fellow concessionaire, Brothers. De La Mer is also expected to sell merch at this site. Rippers will be returning to Beach 86th along with De La Mer selling merch at the site. “Rippers is thrilled to announce we’ll be returning to the Rockaway boardwalk this summer,” Rippers owner Christopher Parachini said. “The community support, near and far, was humbling, inspiring, and truly awesome. Words don’t fully express the gratitude and love we feel for all of you. We’re looking forward now. Greasing the gears and scrubbing the deck in anticipation of summer ‘21. We can’t wait to see you. Rippers Forever.” The concession at Beach 97th is also seeing the return of many favorites, as well as some newcomers. Low Tide Bar is not returning but the Sand Shark Bar will keep the party going. The food lineup includes RedHook Lobster Pound, La Cevicheria, Chicken Joint, Edible Island, City Sticks, Palenque, La Fruteria, Two Dudes, Breezy’s BBQ and Seany Slices will be bringing his personal pies from the Rockaway Brewery to the boardwalk at 97. At the designated surf beach area around Beach 110th Street, they hope to bring surfboard rentals from Surfboard Tribe NYC. Lido Beach Butlers, an umbrella and chair rental company, is also expected to set up shop around Beach 108th Street. Down in the other surfing beach area on Beach 68th Street, Boarders will have a mobile set up for merch and gear, while surf schools, Locals, Skudin, New York Surf School and Sierra, will keep the surf scene going with lessons. Additionally, along Shore Front Parkway, Mister Softee will continue to sell ice cream, along with ices from newcomer, Yum Ices. In addition to announcing their summer plans, Broudo and Klein say the future of the concessions looks bright. “In

THURSDAY, MAY 6, 2021 addition to making extensive repairs and renovations to the existing buildings at Beach 86th, Beach 97th and Beach 106th, we are also planning on building out a concession at Beach 68th and making Beach 97th a year-round operation. We look forward to working with dozens of local, talented Rockaway Beach vendors - some of whom you’ll recognize, some of whom you’ll come to recognize - and most importantly, keeping the cool beach vibes and party going for the entire community and City to enjoy,” they said. Broudo and Klein say they plan to have a soft opening for the concessions on Friday, May 28 with a full opening on Saturday, May 29. However, some concessions may open the week before. Plans to bring back live music are still in the works as Rockaway Bazaar is awaiting guidance from the Parks Department due to Covid. The End is Near

It’s been a long road for construction work along Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park. The city says it’s coming to an end. The NYC Department of Design and Construction says the work is expected to be complete ahead of Memorial Day weekend, by May 23. It’s hard to remember the last time Beach Channel Drive between Beach 116th and Beach 124th wasn’t being worked on. Contracts for the SANDHW11 project to repair the water

mains, sewers and road in this area, started being sought in 2016. Work officially started in 2018. For three years, locals and visitors have been subject to rough road conditions and closures along this strip. The DDC says it’ll finally come by an end by May 23, and maybe even sooner. “The remaining work is the asphalt on the north side of Beach Channel Drive from 116th St up to about 124th St, and then it’s basically complete,” DDC spokesperson Ian Michaels says. As far as the area along the bay wall, Michaels says sidewalk will be placed near the curb, as well as a three-foot wide asphalt path directly along the bay wall, and dirt will be left between the two to be seeded for grass.

And see Page 29 as well. ***** Of course, after Mayor de Blasio said the city would fully reopen by July 1, Governor Cuomo had to one-up him and went and declared that most things, including the 24 hour subway, would reopen much sooner and now it seems May 19 is the day things go full steam ahead. In any case, the reopening gives some hope for the annual Irish Festival held by AOH Division 21. Last year's event was canceled due to Covid. The usual June date is a little too soon for it go on, but there is some good news. There are plans in the works to hold the festival in late summer. AOH is looking at bringing back the festival to the St. Camillus lot over the September 11 weekend. Let's hope the luck of the Irish is on their side! ***** No news is no news. We

reached out to the National Park Service regarding whether of not they’ve given approval for Rockaway Beach Volleyball to return and were told “no info available. Check back later.” Ok. ***** A small fire broke out in one of the vacant stores that line Beach 116th Street just off the boardwalk last Friday afternoon. It was just another reminder that vacancies are a plague on neighborhoods. Beats us why some landlords hold out for unrealistic rents, pay taxes on vacant properties, and just don’t seem to care. Many times, we’ve asked the owners of this property and the Park Inn Home for Adults to be better neighbors but it falls on deaf ears. ***** Last call advertisers! Adams’ Family of Endorsers Grows Mayoral candidate Eric Adams got a double dose of Rockaway support on Friday, April 30, as State Senator Joe Addabbo Jr. and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato met Adams at Beach 116th Street to offer their endorsements for him and his campaign. Addabbo and Adams were colleagues in the State Senate and Addabbo relayed how working with Adams showed he is a bridge builder and effective negotiator. Although he is currently the Brooklyn Borough President, Adams was raised mostly in South Jamaica, Queens and recalled happy days in Rockaway. “This was our south of France. This is our Hamptons.. ... Some people will state that it’s good to be back here, but I've never left. I am a Queens child, and I wear that proudly as I look to serve the outer boroughs.” Adams said all ferry routes and ridership should be examined for cost-saving but actually proposed expanding the Rockaway ferry system includ-

ing integrating the subway fare and keeping the current fare at $2.75. “One price,” he said. “You should be able to get on the subway, the bus and any other MTA use of the transit system. If you don’t take the (Rockaway) A train, you’re basically stuck. So, we can't have a conversation of changing of the streetscape and there being too many vehicles on the road without alternative transportation.” Prior to entering politics, Adams was a member of the

NYPD for more than twenty years, rising to the rank of captain. In a race with several candidates, recent polls show Adams trailing only Andrew Yang. With her support, Pheffer Amato said, “I'm endorsing Eric because he has a proven track record in this city, at a time where we can't afford to get it wrong. Eric is the blue collar, working class candidate we need. Eric may be Brooklyn borough president, but he is also the Queens candidate, and the candidate to take our city out of this pandemic and make sure that we live in a city that works for all." “Eric will fight every day to make New York City safer, healthier, and more resilient for all of us.” Addabbo added. “I am proud to join this movement to elect Eric Adams as

the next great mayor of our five boroughs." Addabbo and Amato weren’t the only notable electeds who offered backing. Over the weekend, former Rockaway City Councilman and now Queens Borough President Donovan Richards also announced his support for Adams. “Our city is facing a crisis on every front. A social justice crisis, an economic crisis, a public health crisis, and the list goes on. The only way to bounce back properly is to have leadership we can trust. Eric is consistent and his positions don’t change for political convenience,” Richards said. “He’s the steady hand we need right now and I’m proud to stand by him.” The mayoral primary is Tuesday, June 22 and will use ranked choice voting. Voters can select up to five candidates in order of preference. A process of elimination is used until a winner is chosen, which is expected to take several weeks.

Community Board 14 May Meeting Recap By Marina Cregan

On Tuesday, May 4, more than 100 participants joined the Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting via Zoom. With a packed agenda including a total of four presentations from the Land Use and Housing Committee and the Parks and Public Safety Committee, the reports from the Chairwoman Dolores Orr and District Manager Jonathan Gaska, were kept brief in order to keep the meeting on track. Following their reports, New York City Cultural Affairs representative, Kendal Henry, gave a brief presentation regarding a new art installment for the new firehouse located on Beach 116-11 Beach Channel Dr. Henry stated that they are looking for local artists who are interested in creating a piece that can be considered for the final project on the firehouse. Additionally, Henry stated that once all artists have submitted their proposals, they would like

community members with an art background to help pick the final decision. The first meeting for the panel process will be held virtually on May 25. The meeting then continued with two presentations from the Land Use and Housing Committee. The first report regarded the zoning amendment for 133 Beach 116th. This zoning amendment will change from R7/C1-3 to a R7A/C2-4, which will facilitate the development of an Orange Theory Gym. All neighbors in the surrounding area have been made aware of the amendment including this new development, and all have expressed their support. Following the report, CB14 passed a motion approving the new text amendment. The next report was presented by Richard Lobel from Sheldon Lobel, who is working with Rev. The result of the rezoning would also include the lot of the nursing home located across the street, which the church plans to knock down and create an additional development. Regarding the senior affordable housing, the building will be eight stories high consisting of 84 dwelling units. There will be a person at the front desk of the building 24 hours a day. Additionally, there will be a live-in superintendent to attend to maintenance issues for residents. Because this is a fair housing matter that is receiving money from the state, residency cannot be officially guaranteed to only Rockaway residents. Rev. Cockfield told CB14 that the church went to the residential homes most impacted on Beach 66th, Beach 67th, and Beach 68th in efforts to gain their support for the de-

velopment. Of the roughly 60 homes in the surrounding area, more than half were in favor of this rezoning and signed a petition stating their consent, which was given to all CB14 members. When the presentation was done, questions and concerns were raised from CB14 members. Members stated that there was a lack of transparency given to residents located in the area, because the petition was only signed by locals on three blocks. Additionally, no residents in the nursing home were made aware of the two new developments at all. Orr stated that she has no doubt the community supports what the church is doing because of their long term presence in the community, but the inclusion of the nursing home should not be included in the rezoning process. CB14 passed a motion approving the rezoning of Beach 67th to create a senior affordable housing development and a charter school but did not approve the zoning amendment which would include the nursing home. There was no motion voted on regarding this item on the agenda at this time, and no contracts have been officially signed until Rockaway Beach Bazaar has received approval from the Parks Department.

From JBRPC: Celebrating Earth Day Helps Youth Learn Leadership Skills Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about all of earth’s treasures and the importance of protecting and restoring natural areas. This year, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy celebrated Earth Day

and Earth Week with activities that involved youth from St. John’s Residence for Boys in Rockaway Beach through the Conservancy’s Wild Year Program. Participants of the Program partnered with NYC Parks in a tree planting project

in Far Rockaway as well as a shoreline cleanup in Howard Beach. The innovative Wild Year Program, developed in 2019, engages youth in meaningful stewardship work that educates them about nature while offering exposure to career opportunities in parks. During each event, youth were tasked with leadership roles and the young men from St. John’s did not disappoint. At Jamaica Bay Park, participants planted 18 mature trees including maple, eastern red cedar and holly. The restored shoreline is public parkland where a former derelict home once stood and will now feature trails and native coastal habitat. “For many, it was their first time planting and it was challenging, but everyone worked hard and the restored shoreline looks great,” Elizabeth Stoehr of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy said.

And Beach Channel Drive from Beach 116th Street to Beach 125th Street is a disaster. This road is the major east / west route through the Rockaways. Since it is down to one lane in each direction it has created a bottleneck, backing up traffic on it and other

east west roads. It is also dangerous. Several times I have been driving Beach Channel Drive and had cars driving as if the road was two lanes in the same direction. Once, if I hadn’t braked and let a car in, there would have surely been an accident. I ask City officials, when will this road be paved and traffic back to normal? Time is running out. Traffic is bad enough in the Rockaways after Memorial Day. With Beach Channel Drive as it is, emergency vehicles will get stuck in the grid lock and people could die. A Man With Few Egrets By Katie McFadden

Saturday, May 8 will mark World Migratory Bird Day. Each year, hundreds of birds make the trek from down south to the areas surrounding Jamaica Bay. One of these birds has gotten a little too close to home. Edgar, a great egret, makes almost daily

stops on the deck of one Broad Channel resident. But the homeowner welcomes the annual visitor. After all, Don Riepe knows birds better than most people. Edgar the egret has become a welcome feathered feature of Broad Channel. For nearly 10 years, the all-white bird that can reach as tall as four feet when outstretched, has been making annual pit stops right at the back deck of Don Riepe’s bayside home. And it isn’t the first egret. Another egret, Egor, had been coming to Broad Channel and stopping at Riepe’s home for about 20 years. However, about two years ago, Egor, which Riepe learned was actually a she, stopped coming. But like clockwork, Edgar continues to return each spring. It’s no coincidence that Edgar has become friendly with Riepe. Riepe comes with a wealth of knowledge about birds, especially those around Jamaica Bay. He served nearly 25 years with the National Park Service as Chief Ranger of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, and he never really retired. Riepe went on to become a Jamaica Bay Guardian and since 1985, has also served as director of the American Littoral Society’s Northeast Chapter, focusing on programming

around Jamaica Bay. So when it comes to egrets, Riepe knows why they’re drawn to his home—he feeds them. “There’s no real mystery to it,” Riepe says. “I’m on the water in the bay where they forage and hang out and nest and I feed them.” But it wasn’t always so simple. When Egor started arriving, it took a while before he realized she ate, well, like a bird. “She was particular. If I gave her the wrong size fish or a killifish, she would throw it down. She wanted only the Atlantic silversides of a certain size, not too big, not too small,” Riepe said. Once he got it right, Egor kept coming back for more. “She liked me because I paid special attention to her and gave her just the right size fish,” he said. But after 20 years, Egor stopped coming. However, Riepe looks at the bright side. “Egrets average about 15 years in the wild, so Egor had a good life,” he said.

They walk right into the house,” Riepe said. “Edgar will come right into the kitchen and stand next to me like ‘what’s for dinner?’ No other bird will do that.” One day he came out to find Edgar made himself comfortable on top of a pullout bed. When both birds were around, things got a bit complicated. “When they both were coming, Egor would be in the house and Edgar walked in after and would chase her into the living room,” Riepe said. “They’d both be flying through the living room. I said, this is too much!” Now Edgar mostly bothers Riepe’s cat, Princess, much to her chagrin. Riepe caught a video of Edgar walking right up to Princess, who was sitting

At some point, Egor must’ve passed along the word about Riepe’s diner. After coming for about a decade, a friend, a bigger bird with a deeper croak and a clubbed toe, started to come along. “He’s beautiful,” Riepe said. “He has the most beautiful plumage.” Riepe decided to name the beautiful bird Edgar, and found that unlike Egor, Edgar wasn’t so picky. “Edgar eats everything. He’d eat a ham sandwich if I gave it to him,” Riepe said, but added that he just sticks to fish. The birds quickly made themselves at home. If the door is

on the table, when Edgar starts nipping at her, while Princess backed away. But Riepe says Princess has mostly gotten used to her feathered brother. “They sort of get along. They ignore each other now,” he says. When Edgar isn’t begging for food or bothering Princess, Riepe says he’s busy exploring Jamaica Bay. “He’s either at the nest site or establishing his territory or he’s out in the bay, fishing in the marshes,” Riepe said. The egrets tend to visit around late March and stick around until late October, and sometimes even into November, be-

fore heading off to warmer areas, as snowbirds do. Riepe says one egret tagged by New Jersey Audubon, Edward, has been seen in Jamaica Bay and found all the way down in South Carolina, but Riepe says that’s the northernmost area they’ll be when they head south. “They go to Florida and some even go to Central America. They can fly great distances,” Riepe said. Riepe says the egrets coming to Jamaica Bay to nest is a good sign. After all, there was a time when great egrets were threatened as hunters decimated populations in the late 1800s. The beautiful, long white feathers of egrets had become an in-demand fashion accessory for women’s hats. This made egrets a target for hunters. That was until 1900 when The Lacey Act was passed to prohibit wildlife trade and protect animals like egrets. Then in 1905, an Aubudon Game Warden was shot and killed by plume hunters. This led to an uproar and further action. The Migratory Bird Treaty was established in 1918, providing even more protection for the species. It made a difference. “By the 1950s, the egrets started to show up again in the marshes and now they’re common. They made a really great comeback,” Riepe says. And the egrets aren’t the only ones. Riepe says Jamaica Bay is home to many different species that have seen an increase in numbers including the snowy egret, herrons, barn owls, ospreys and more, giving testament to the great work that people like Riepe do to protect Jamaica Bay and make it a desirable place for wildlife to call home. According of History.com, the Greeks and Romans had festivals honoring mothers and England had celebrations during Lent to honor mothers. The American holiday can be traced back to Anna Jarvis from West Virginia, who around the time of the Civil War, started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs,” which helped mothers learn skills to raise their children. Ms. Jarvis then changed the focus of the club to “Mother’s Friendship Day,” where mothers of former Confederate and Union soldiers gathered together in order to bring the country together.

Jarvis then campaigned to have Mother’s Day become an official holiday. So, the history of Mother’s Day is quite impressive. Jarvis really wanted to assist mothers and improve relations between groups that needed mediating. Ironically, after Mother’s Day became a holiday in 1914 with Woodrow Wilson signing a proclamation, and Jarvis saw the commercialization of the day, she worked the rest of her life to repeal the holiday. I like the commercialization of the holiday. I am not going to lie. I enjoy receiving gifts. I have gotten

a new bicycle, in a town where you need a new bicycle every few years usually because your children “borrow” your bike and it disappears. The newest bike I received was an electric bicycle so I can keep up with my husband who bought one first. It was the best Mother’s Day gift EVER. I have received facial and massage gift certificates, also awesome gifts. Of course, the best gifts were the ones the children made in school. I worry that with everything going on in the world, will teachers stop working on these crafts? Will the word “mom” become a cancelled word? I hope not. I had on the refrigerator for many years a poem my daughter wrote for me for Mother’s Day and one of the things that made me a great mom was while in the car I allowed them to listen to their music while driving in the car! Something so simple was a thing they loved about me. In a trying year, Moms need this day to celebrate how hard we all work. This past year, mothers across the country became teachers and technology gurus. Thank goodness my children are

older and not school age, because if I had to work from home while trying to have the children learn while on Zoom and Google Meet, it would not have been pretty. I have said to my friends with school-aged children, “God gives you what you can handle.” God knew I could not handle online learning. According to Forbes Magazine, alcohol sales were up 80% in 2020 compared to 2019. I do not see that as a coincidence. I see it as surviving online learning. So to all the moms out there: I hope you get that manicure and pedicure gift certificate and I hope you get to go to the nail salon alone! I hope you get to go to the bathroom alone and without anyone calling your name, asking you where something is. I hope you get breakfast in bed. I hope you get a homemade card and/or gift from the kids. I hope you get to sleep a little later. I hope your husband surprises you with a cleaning lady while he takes you out for the day. Thanks to all the moms out there, especially those not with us anymore, for showing us how to be the best moms we can be.

A Towel and a Banana A MOTHER’S LOVE IN 1930s ROCKAWAY By Jean Caligiuri McKenna

(Jean (Caligiuri) McKenna recalls simple memories from a simple time of the Rockaway Beach she knew as a young girl growing up in the 1930s and 1940s). Whether as wide-eyed children taking in the world’s wonders, young people excitedly coming of age, or feverishly busy adults raising families, there is a universally comforting feeling to know ‘mother’ is there, somewhere nearby. Whether to tender a rub on a scraped knee, share a vanilla ice cream cone, lovingly explain why birds chirp, why manners matter, or provide a grown up rub of caring wisdom in our own parental years, she always has been as near as the next room and as close as a phone call away, ready to give of herself at any time.

That is how it is just supposed to be. Throughout our lives that assurance brings a perpetual calm that we cherish, even if human nature tends to blur our appreciation for it at times. In later years, its memory provides a heartfelt solace symbolized in even the simplest of memories. My mother, who lived in Rockaway long ago, arrived on Ellis Island in 1929 from Italy in her mid-30s. A small woman (under 5 foot) who never lost her accent, her marriage role was meant to be more of a domestic companion and ‘stepmother’ to three adolescent children while fulfilling her housekeeper duties. An energetic and tireless worker who left behind a children’s teaching job for a life in America, she was now resigned to her lot dutifully mired in servitude, until at age 41.

FAR ROCK GREEK COUNCIL CLEANS UP

Far Rock is continuing to keep the community clean. On Saturday, May 1, Far Rock Greek Council and Influence Activewear teamed up for their annual community cleanup, which was a big success. With the help of Assembly Member Khaleel Anderson and Strategy for Black Lives, the groups were able to gather several volunteers to pitch in and help with the cleanup effort around the Mott

Avenue train station in Far Rockaway. “The turnout was huge!” Curtis Turney-Rentas of the Far Rock Greek Council said. “We want to thank all of our Greeks who came out and our community, especially our youth who came out to put in work. I was her very unexpected surprise, giving her purpose and a new lease on life. And from my earliest memory, ‘Mama’ was always near. My ‘simple’ memory was an early summer afternoon around 1939 at age 4 or 5. War was not quite yet on the horizon as the stilled days were peaceful and carefree. The beach was right up the block from our tree-lined street of picket fences and wooden houses on Beach 84th street across from St. Rose of Lima church. It was a hot, sweltering, humid day, and Mama was busy as always, bustling with household chores and cooking, as well as catering to the needs of our annual summer tenants. But amidst the demanding clamor, she must have realized a cool dip in the ocean would do me good, because she suddenly abandoned her chores to take me for a walk to the beach. This was a treat—it didn’t happen very often. Anxiously excited holding her hand, we set about up the block, passing the church, and crossing the ‘new road’ (Shore Front Parkway), carefully dodging black sedans with white tires along the way. As we approached the old boardwalk wooden stairs leading down to the sand, Mama implored me to be careful in the water and hold onto “the ropes.” (There were stationed posts near the shore connecting to ropes with buoy barrels for safety). Leaving her, (not too far behind), I gleefully ran towards the seashore and into the refreshing saltwater. Holding onto the ropes in the shallow surf, I playfully frolicked amongst chatting women and children doing the same, all the while occasionally glancing for reassurance at my mother’s presence as she stood patiently distant but near, watching me like a hawk. I must have dipped myself several times (up and down, up and down), before finally running back to Mama, wet and shivering, where I have vivid memories of her waiting with a towel for me in one hand and a banana in the other. We

walked back to the house, hand in hand under the warmth of the Rockaway sun— just a short little excursion but I was happy, while Mama returned to her labors! As a child I had no idea of the busyness, sufferings, or aches and pains she must have felt at times, only that I knew Mama devoted herself to me unconditionally. Even as she aged in body, her unwavering love remained the same as that day on the beach—never too busy, always there. Her faith, wisdom, dignity and caring, shown in many small but profound ways such as these taught me lifelong lessons of a mother’s love, which I’ve pricelessly cherished and have tried to emulate and honor faithfully in my own motherhood years. How true that the timeless child’s yearning of “I want my Mommy” never truly leaves us. I still miss my mother every day. I can never thank her enough for all her devotion and would do anything just to see her for even a minute. In spite of the years that have separated us, I am comforted in knowing that I still am and will always be my mother’s daughter. And like the loving imprint from that longago sunny day in 1939, she is always near, even if that memory drifts further away with each passing year. No one loves you more than your mother. My First home. My first friend. My first teacher. My first love. Thank You Heavenly Father for this Amazing Gift!

Covid-19 Tracker 4/26 – 5/3 As parts of Rockaway have seen increases in Covid-19 cases, it’s important to keep track of how the neighborhood is doing with coronavirus. Robby Schwach of Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office has been hard at work, tracking down the details for each Rockaway zip code. We are sharing this info each week. The latest info represents changes between 04/26/202105/03/2021. In 11691, positive cases increased by 70 from 7,269 to 7,339. There were four new deaths in this period, bringing the total number of deaths to 454. Twenty-five percent or 12,070 people have been fully vaccinated. In 11692, cases went up by 14, from 1,806 to 1,820. There was one new death in this period, bringing the total to 105. Twenty-eight percent or 4,358 people have been vaccinated. In 11693, cases rose by nine

from 1,113 to 1,122. There were no new deaths, and the total remains at 39. Thirty-three percent or 3,257 people have been fully vaccinated. In 11694, there was an increase in cases by 14, from 2,237 to 2,251. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 96. Forty-three percent or 7,054 have been fully vaccinated. In 11697, cases rose by six from 552 to 558. There were no new deaths in this period, and the total remains at 12. Seventy-six percent or 2,031 people have been vaccinated. The seven-day rolling average of positive tests by zip code: As of April 29, 11691 is 3.46%, 11692 is 1.93%, 11693 is 1.98%, 11694 is 1.74%, 11697 is 3.31%. Epistaxis, commonly called a nosebleed, is a frequently encountered condition that is responsible for about one in 200 emergency department visits here in the U.S. It has an estimated lifetime prevalence of 60%, and about 6% of those who have nosebleeds seek treatment. Management is usually straightforward but can be complicated by several factors, primarily the use of anticoagulant medication. In most cases, bleeding starts spontaneously without any obvious precipitant. The underlying causes of and risk factors for epistaxis may be classified into local (e.g., lack of humidification, trauma, intranasal medication application, infection, inflammation, and tumors), systemic (e.g., blood diseases, leukemia, hypertension, and congestive

Nose Bleeds heart failure), or idiopathic (no known cause). Recurrent epistaxis is often the first sign of systemic or local malignancies. The nose, like the face and scalp, has a vigorous blood supply, with arteries that originate from branches of the external and internal carotid arteries. Approximately 80 to 90% of epistaxis events occur in the anterior nasal cavity, or the portion of the nasal cavity that can be reached by one’s finger. Posterior bleeds, which are uncommon, are much more difficult to treat. The main approach to treatment is to maintain the patient’s airway and prevent the aspiration and swallowing of blood. Treatment should proceed in a systematic and escalating fashion. Initial treatment consists of squeezing, or compressing, the lower part of the nose for 15 to 20 minutes while leaning forward. If the bleeding is originating in the anterior chamber, this

allows the blood vessels to clot while preventing aspiration or swallowing of blood. Should this prove ineffective, anterior rhinoscopy is indicated to locate the bleeding source. Once located, the bleeding may be cauterized or topical vasoconstricting agents may be applied. Ironically, while chronic cocaine snorting is a cause of epistaxis, cocaine was once used as a vasoconstricting agent. Should these efforts fail to stop the bleeding, the next step is nasal packing. Anterior packing may be done by the ER physician, while posterior packing is much more involved and usually requires the services of an ENT specialist. Thankfully, resorbable packing is now available. Non-resorbable packing, usually in the form of ribbon gauze or a nasal tampon, can be painful when inserted, while in place, and when removed 48 to 72 hours later. Resorbable packing is much

less painful and contains medications that trigger the clotting cascade, allowing the bleeding vessel to clot off. At discharge, patient education is important. A follow-up appointment is needed to remove non-resorbable packing and in the case of resorbable packing, a follow-up about a week later is advised to check for any residual materiel remaining in the nose. Patients should be advised to avoid vigorous nose blowing, strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and digital manipulation (nose picking) for at least a week. Patients should also use nasal saline and gels to keep the nasal membranes moist and lubricated. Finally, while many people think a nosebleed is a sign of elevated blood pressure, there is still uncertainty about the causal nature of this relationship. Where Do You Get Your Energy? Recently, this question was asked to me and really got me thinking about energy. So many different energies in our world. Positive, negative, high, low, happy, sad, chatty, quiet, upbeat, depressed, anxious and grounded. There are people who wake up early and are ready to run out the door with great energy and yet there are others who slowly step out of bed and take their time to start their day. Personally, the morning is the best part of my day. I choose to go slow, sit quietly with my lemon water and coffee. It is important

for me to take time to settle into the beautiful space I live. This sacred time gives me great energy. Every day I start with prayer and gratitude. Thank you for another day to live life. It is a gift to be healthy and whole and I do not take this for granted. As I write this column, I light my favorite candle, Charcoal from Apokeke. The scent is grounding and nurturing. I am once again reminded how blessed I am to be in a space where I feel safe and protected. My home is my sanctuary and I love the town I live in. We have

Our country is large and diverse. How lucky are we? If we all looked and thought alike it would be boring! I see you, you see me. I respect you, please respect me. Moving the body is a wonderful way to move the energy within your body and mind. Whenever you are feeling lethargic and cranky, get outside and move. Go to a yoga class where you will learn how to breathe, move and relax! Yoga is all about balancing our energies. We don’t force anything but rather sit with our energy and then move slowly and deliberately. There is a fire within that burns away stagnant energy. I have witnessed the benefits of this practice so many times while teaching. Students

often shared their heartfelt experiences with me. Last night as I was preparing my Sunday morning yoga class, I received a message from one of our students. “Hope you and your family are well. I have moved out east to take care of my father and will be closer to my grandchildren as well so doubly blessed. Just wanted to tell you how important Ocean Bliss Yoga was for me all the time I was in Rockaway. It was a real light for me through a lot of difficult times, even though I was often gone for months at a time. I loved your gentle classes, they brought me so much peace. I think fondly of Paulette and Sarah’s classes, you have a wonderful studio and affect people more than you know. Denim Day 2021 By Theresa M Racine

Covid-19 has overshadowed so many things we fight against. In the world of wearing masks, social distancing and not being able to really go out and spread awareness of crimes like sexual assault. So what is denim day? Denim Day takes place the last week of April, Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It is a day when we encourage all people to wear their jeans in solidarity to educate people on sexual violence and victim blaming. The day comes following a high-profile Italian rape trial where the survivor was blamed for her rape because of the type of jeans she was wearing. In Italy in the 1990s, a 45-yearold driving instructor was accused of rape. He picked up an 18-year-old girl for her first driving lesson. Later that night she went home and told her parents what had happened. The parents proceeded to press charges. The rapist was convict-

ed to a lesser charge. The Italian Supreme Court ruled the rape conviction as overturned. The justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she had helped her rapist remove them, implying consent. The following day, women came together and wore jeans at work in solidarity and to send a message—there is

no excuse and never and invitation to rape someone. I, along with Xtrememeasure. org have been fighting against these types of crime and been involved for many years in the fashion industry. This year I reached out to another organization called BKStylefoundation.org, which was started by

JOE MCGIVENEY APRIL 28, 2021 You don’t ever have to live in Rockaway to be a “local.” No one epitomized that more than the legendary Joe McGivney. Joe passed away this week at 67 after a battle with cancer. Though born in Brooklyn, Joe was a staple in the Rockaway experience whether it was in sports, music, poker or partying. An original player in the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League dating back to its inception in 1986, Joe became a major contributor to the growth of the league as a committee member for decades. He was also president of the rules committee. Joe could also be seen rocking the crowd, playing music at various venues in Rockaway with his band Gearth, Wind

HIV post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) should be initiated as soon as possible after exposure, ideally within two hours. Decisions regarding initiation of PEP beyond 36 hours post exposure should be made

on a case-by-case basis. Upon arrival, the hospital will offer assistance from a local rape crisis advocate. The advocate will be able to answer any of your questions about a forensic exam, accompany you through the entire examination, and provide follow-up resources. A forensic exam, also known as a "rape kit", is the collection

of evidence in the emergency department after a sexual assault occurred or within 96 hours. To preserve as much DNA as possible, do not shower, use the bathroom or wash your clothes prior to going to the emergency room. If you are uncomfortable with any part of the exam, you do not have to consent.

Wrestle Talk QUESTIONS & ANSWERS By Eric Jayden

Hey Wrestle Talk Fans! Due to an overwhelming response of emails we have been receiving, we will be answering your question on this week's column. Our first question of the week comes from Daniel M. in Breezy Point and he asked, "Is wrestling fake?" Well, Daniel, here we go again with this question. Professional wrestling is a performance, a staged combat, a fight between two competitors and sometimes three or four. It's a story between Good and Evil and sometimes Evil vs Evil, all told inside a wrestling ring for the entertainment and enjoyment of the fans. The physical contact, the bumps and falls, I can tell you firsthand, are all very real! The wrestling ring can be very unforgiving and with the grueling schedule that pro wrestlers have to go through, unfortunately injuries happen. This is why it's called sports entertain-

ment because pro wrestlers are athletes who trained constantly to stay in top shape to be able to perform in the ring. The outcome might be predetermined but the physical contact and wear ‘n’ tear we put our bodies through is very real. I hope that answers your question. Our second question comes from Mario S. in Rockaway Beach and he asked, "How does someone become a pro wrestler?" This is another great question and let's start it off by saying, it all starts with a dream and desire. Then you must receive proper training at a reputable pro wrestling school. Many are located throughout the country and once enrolled, you will start to learn the basic skills of pro wrestling. It is not easy. It involves a lot of dedication to training and conditioning, cardio, proper diet, and having an open mentality to learn. Like I was always told from the first

day of my training, "Listen and shut up" and “leave your egos at the door.” You will also receive training in wrestling etiquette, character development, promos and how to progress in your wrestling career. But before you start, I will tell you what I tell a lot of aspiring wrestlers, which is to always have a back-up plan and an education that you can fall back on because pro wrestling is not a guarantee. Our third and last question of the week comes from Jamal M. in Far Rockaway and he said, "I want to know about your career in pro wrestling and which was your favorite match you have had, past or present?" Well, Jamal, my career has been a very rewarding one. I have had the privilege of working for many companies and have had the honor of sharing the wrestling ring with wrestling superstars and legends that I grew up watching. I'm currently retired from professional wres-

tling due to an illness. But wrestling has been a tough road full of injuries and achievements and I wouldn't trade it in for anything in the world. I have made money and I have lost money, but I have been able to do what I love, which is entertain the fans. My favorite match of my career has to be against the former NWA Tag Team Champions and legends, The Rock and Roll Express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson). I had the privilege of working with them in Atlanta, Georgia several years ago and it was a great match. I learned so much from them.
