Remembering Laura Deckelman By Katie McFadden
She perfectly captured Rockaway life behind a lens, and now the many subjects of her photos are mourning the sudden loss of someone who fought hard for her community through the best way she knew how—photography. Laura Deckelman died on May 5. On Tuesday, May 5, many in Rockaway were shocked to hear the news of Deckelman’s death. According to her longtime neighbors in Bayswater, Deckelman died of a heart attack at 66, leaving behind her three children, David, Michael and Shifra, and reuniting with the love of her life, her husband, Paul Deckelman, who died on March 27, 2018 due to melanoma. As word spread about the sudden loss, the many who knew her were left devastated, and those who simply knew her from her thousands of photos documenting some of Rock-
away’s biggest to its smallest events, along with her advocacy efforts, were saddened by her passing. Deckelman was never seen without a camera. With a smile on her face, she captured Rockaway’s moments of devastation, to moments of strength, to things that simply exemplified Rockaway life. Following Hurricane Sandy, she documented the devastation across Rockaway to show the world beyond the peninsula, what was happening to her neighbors. Through her photos, she became an advocate for Rocka-
way, especially when it came to the Rockaway ferry. When emergency ferry service began after Hurricane Sandy in November 2012, Deckelman became a regular rider, and even more so when the ferry was under threat of being taken away. Deckelman was such an avid rider that the ferry company at the time, Seastreak, gave her an unlimited pass in exchange for use of her photos documenting the beauty and necessity of the quick ride to Manhattan. As the de Blasio administration threatened to stop the ferry service after the A train was back up and running, Deckelman’s photos became even more important. Deckelman was a vital member of the Rockaway United to Save the Ferry group, advocating for continued ferry service. She attended every rally, and documented them along the way, to show the city how much the ferry meant to the community with limited transportation options. Ultimately,
the ferry service was discontinued at the end of October 2014, but Deckelman’s battle to bring it back never ceased. Her efforts did not go unnoticed. In May 2015, she and longtime ferry advocate Joe Hartigan, were honored as “Heroes of the Harbor” by the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance. In 2016, there was a bigger win for all ferry advocates as de Blasio announced that the ferry would return as part of a citywide service in 2017. Locals called for Deckelman to be recognized for her efforts by naming Rockaway’s ferry stop, “Deckelman’s Landing.” The mayor ultimately decided against naming the city’s ferry landings, but Deckelman was given a very special honor. On April 30, 2017, before the first NYC Ferry operated by Hornblower took its maiden voyage, Deckelman was named godmother of the ship Urban Journey, and was given the honor of christening it. Zoom And Doom
BOYLEING POINTS
I gotta admit, Rockaway youths (utes to us Brooklyn transplants) have seen some shite. The last twenty years have been insane. Nothing happened between 1980 and 2000. But since 2000, sheesh. I know some nitpickers are going to point out some massive oversights by me but that’s what nitpickers do. And with everyone stuck inside, nitpicking’s become a national pastime. So, I’m asking: What happened in the ‘80s? I know that decade happened, but I can’t think of anything big that happened? Take a pause, think, what you’d come up with? Getting married or having kids doesn’t count. Ok, I did the google and missed some world whoppers. AIDS, The Internet.

Chernobyl. And Mt. St. Helen’s erupted. Ronald Reagan and the Pope were shot. Wall Street crashed. And Richard Pryor set himself on fire. But in Rockaway, specifically? What happened? I don’t know. Rockaway Playland closed. That might have been a bummer but not an earth shaking and shattering event. What do you got for the 90’s? Berlin Wall. Gulf War. Monica Lewinsky? Y2K was such a dud it belongs as part of 1999, not 2000. In Rockaway? I don’t know, the Golden Venture? I can’t think of anything else. But this new century? Whew. 9/11. The plane crash. 2008 financial crisis. Hurricane Sandy. Anthony Weiner imploding. And now a pandemic. And not to make light of something like Chernobyl, but that was over there. The recent hits have been pretty friggin’ local. I didn’t even
mention de Blasio being mayor. Now you know why I threw Weiner in the list of disasters. De blasio. Ugh. Talk about a Chernobyl on top. And now, we’re stuck. We don’t even know what the new normal is. My siblings and I have already proven to be utter failures in that Zoom thing. I assume most of you know what it is and plenty have tried the video calls. The first few minutes are spent getting everybody up to speed with the video and audio controls. There’s always one or two who just can’t get the hang of it. They spend so much time saying, “Can you hear me?” that you get sick of hearing them. And for sure, it’s not Boyle-friendly. If you’ve got a Hollywood Squares group gathered for a chat, the technology is designed so that whoever speaks gets the main camera. And with very pa-
tient, taciturn, and/overly polite people, the thing works great. But we Boyles practically short-circuit the thing. We grew up talking over each other, interrupting other and hijacking the conversation in between breaths. With proper endearment. Zoom doesn’t handle verbal ricochet very well. And to make matters worse, when we’re on Zoom we scream louder than usual. I’m wondering if cops get called for loud conversation? And it’s not just the tech shortcomings. Zoom doesn’t allow you to glance around for an ally. Some sibling might say something ridiculous and normally you’d look at someone in the group with that face that says, he’s gotta be kidding, right? Zoom doesn’t offer you the chance to team up with others for an ambush. I’ve had it. I need some face to face shouting.

Local filmmaker, John Sica, has decided to launch his “Quarantine” short film “Liminality” on our new RockawayTimesTV.com site. John was responsible for the award-winning documentary, “Seven Miles to Shore,” chronicling the devastating effects of Super Storm Sandy on our community, and the heroics of Dylan Smith. “Being quarantined with my wife Rita in our condo these weeks was starting to take its toll on us.” Sica admitted. They watched the “Tiger King” and caught up on other shows but the weather in April was not inviting and they were stuck inside like all of us. Instead of watching series after series on TV, Sica decided to make his own show. Rita was reluctant but agreed. After reading a story in the New York Post about how divorce filings were on the rise, Sica wanted to tell another side of the story. Without giving too much away John and Rita made a funny, touching, romantic comedy about being isolated with the one you love, or maybe used to. “We spent hours a day shooting scenes, coming up with new ideas.” Sica said. “After a while it was like work, I would tell Rita, after breakfast we have to shoot
this scene and that.” Using mostly his phone to shoot it, and filming mostly in their condo on Beach 91st Street and around the surrounding area, they capture the stereotypical old school Rockaway couple on the brink. John is a mess and Rita is forgiving as they are forced to wait out the lockdown together – for better or worse! After two weeks, they were done shooting and enlisted their son Brian to edit it. The film is 20 minutes long and can be seen on RockawaytimesTV.com. Let us know what you think! The Rockaway Times launched RockawayTimesTV. com last week. The online paper is available all week long on the site and new video updates are added all the time. In addition to Sica’s short film, local musicians Lou Pastina and Guy Nevirs contributed songs and their work can be seen on the Art/ Music page. REMEMBERING LAURA DECKELMAN Continued from Page 3 a smile as she smashed the celebratory bottle of champagne on the boat’s railing, marking the moment ferry service had finally returned to Rockaway. Beyond her photos and advocacy efforts, Deckelman had many other talents. While her parents wouldn’t let her study art in college at Hofstra University in the 1970s, she did study sociology and went on to become a radio engineer. Deckelman celebrated her Jewish faith, often making it a subject of her creativity. In 2000, she wrote and published a book called “The ‘Final Solution’ is Life: A Chassidic Dynasty’s Story of Survival and Rebuilding.” After returning to school from 2004 to 2007, she took painting courses at Queens College and went on to win an award from the Rockaway Artists Alliance for her oil painting, “Rebbe With Lulov.” It was at Hofstra that Deckelman met her husband, Paul,
in the early 1970s and it wasn’t long before they married. They rarely left each other’s side, until Paul’s unexpected passing in 2018. Having lost her other half, Laura was left devastated. However, she still turned to her second love of photography to seek solace. At three years old, Deckelman received her very first camera from her father and she never stopped snapping away. She turned to digital photography in 2009. In addition to using her photos for advocacy efforts, Deckelman had a knack for capturing the simple things that make Rockaway special—surfers, beach life, sunsets, Lisa G’s Zumba classes, memorials like the yearly 9/11 ceremony at Tribute park and the Flight of 587 and beyond. It is those photos, and the memories of the kind, joyful, creative woman who took them, that Rockaway now has to hold on to. Laura Deckelman was laid to rest on Wednesday, May 6 at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont.

Blasio says there’s a chance of an opening later this summer. ***** The Graybeards ran a food drive last week and deserve a big round of applause. The group collected more than two thousand bags of food and received more than $4000 in donations. All the food went to food pantries at St. Camillus, St. Rose, and St. Mary’s. The money will go into an account that will be used to supplement the food pantries which help many in desperate need. ***** The Daniel M. O'Connell Post 272 of the American Legion, using an abundance of caution due to the Covid-19 pandemic, announced the cancellation of the 101st Annual Memorial Day Parade. They ask at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 25 that you pause and reflect on the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America. ***** Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato joined with the New York City Department of Hous-
ing Preservation and Development (HPD), the NYPD 100th Precinct, and local volunteers to distribute food to seniors at Dayton Beach Park (DBP). Last week, Stacey went on Facebook Live and blasted the DBP co-op board for refusing food meant for seniors. In a press release, she said, “This is not the first instance of improper behavior by the board,” citing a NYC Department of Investigations report confirming numerous improprieties with both the board and former management company. ***** The Payroll Protection Program (PPP) continues to be a nightmare for local businesses. While a few have gotten their loans in recent days, many are still waiting. It’s also a program full of holes. Example: A business, deemed non-essential, has been forced to close. They get the loan but can’t open. Why hire people back if you can’t open and seventy-five percent of the loan is supposed to go to payroll? And the loan is supposed to be used as soon as the money is in the bank.

Small Businesses Feel the Pain of PPP Waiting Game By Katie McFadden
Many small businesses across Rockaway are still hoping for a helping hand. When the country rolled out the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to provide forgivable loans to help small businesses keep their employees employed, it was intended to provide some relief. However, many are still playing the waiting game, while their businesses are in danger. When applications opened for PPP on April 3, many small business owners applied as quickly as possible, but it wasn’t long before the $349 billion pot had washed up and many small businesses were left without funding. Frustration grew when it was learned that not-so-small businesses like Shake Shack received $10 million. Ultimately, under pressure, some of those businesses returned the money. Yet many true small businesses are still struggling nearly two months after most businesses came to a halt or were limited.
RBNY Physical Therapy, which has two Rockaway locations and had opened a third in Howard Beach in February, is among one of the many hit hard by coronavirus impacts and a lack of financial assistance. Almost immediately, owner Katie Cusmiani Ten Eyck, felt the effects, despite being considered an essential business. Hours were reduced as patients canceled appointments, resulting in staff layoffs. When the PPP program was announced, Ten Eyck hoped to use it to pay the employees she could retain and cover ongoing costs. She applied right away, but the first-round funding quickly ran out. Matt Preis of Chuck & Buddha’s Pet Services, offering pet care and dog walking in Rockaway and Brooklyn, was also among those who applied in the first round, but his bank hadn’t processed the application in time. All of his employees are now out of work. Preis was hoping to use the funding to pay employees when work picked up again.
Even The Rockaway Times (RT) has been impacted. “The RT tried to apply through Chase on the first day the SBA funding was available. Chase was not even accepting applications while other banks were. Boyle was informed that his application was submitted to SBA on April 7, yet weeks later, is still receiving a message saying his application is awaiting SBA approval. “Aren’t funds available? Care Packages Sent To St. Johns
On Tuesday, May 5, seventeen hundred staff members of St. John’s Hospital received individual care packages filled with essential items as they work long days and nights tending to COVID-19 patients. The care packages were donated by the Debra and Leon Black Family, Aramark, the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, Robin Hood, and American Red Cross, and include shelf-stable food, over the counter medicine, household cleaning essentials, and personal
care products. The care packages were distributed by American Red Cross volunteers as staff entered and exited the hospital’s campus. Jerry Walsh, SJEH’s Chief Executive Officer said, “We are working tirelessly to provide the best care for our patients, and these care packages provide relief to our dedicated team members who may find it challenging to shop for many of life’s essential items at this time.” St. John’s—the only hospital located on the Rockaway peninsula—has been at the forefront of battling the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, the hospital has successfully discharged 449 COVID-19 patients, while continuing to serve patients who are in need of other medical services not related to the novel coronavirus.

On Thursday, April 30, six-year-old, Jordan Greenberg was up and ready to go at 7:20 a.m. As her parents were preparing for the "virtual" day, Jordan and her younger brother Harrison, wandered into the guest room on the second floor of their home and looked out of the window to see if it was going to be another rainy day. She noticed one of the wires going from her neighbor's house to the telephone pole was "steaming." Jordan called her mom because she knew the wire was "broken." Jordan's mother saw the sparks and her dad immediately called and alerted their neighbors whose house was in danger. The neighbors called the power company that dispatched a truck within the hour to solve the potentially fire-causing problem.
This young Rockaway girl took, "if you see something, say something," literally and her actions possibly saved lives. Neighbors applauded Jordan's actions and expressed gratitude that even the youngest among us, are looking out for others.

Rockaway Beach Needed Liz Hanna By Katie McFadden
She may have started a Facebook page called “Rockaway Beach Needs You,” but in the last two months, one thing has
been made clear—Rockaway Beach Needed Liz Hanna. Rockaway Park resident Elizabeth Hanna has become one of the many unsung local heroes of the coronavirus pandemic. In the last few weeks, the woman known to many as a longtime co-owner of the former Brown’s Hardware store, has started to become known as an even bigger cheerleader of local business and connecting the community with ways to show support to those on the frontlines. After making the decision to leave Mazzone Hardware late last year, where she continued working after the company took over for Brown’s, Hanna was starting the next chapter of her life—becoming a pharmacy technician. She was halfway through the program when coronavirus shook up everything in March. As the virus put her plans on pause, Hanna had more time on her hands that she was looking to put to good use. “I’m used to doing things to support the community, having seen this community go through Hurricane Sandy and 9/11. I’m so used to jumping in and helping, and with no longer working at the store and my program being canceled, I found myself in a hopeless place,” Hanna said. Hanna started helping in whatever ways she could, like trying to support The Gift is Love as owner Denise Diehm tried to find creative ways to sell gifts before Easter, despite being closed to customers, designated as a non-essential business. Hanna started posting The
Gift is Love’s products on Facebook, letting people know how they could get them. She then realized the effort could become more widespread, as she could do the same for all local businesses that are struggling through shutdowns or limitations due to coronavirus. “Having gone through Hurricane Sandy as a business owner, I knew what local businesses were going through. I needed to help them,” Hanna said. As more people stuck at home turned to social media for information and entertainment, an idea started to grow. Hanna was inspired by the fast-growing Coronavirus Quarantine Virtual Bar Facebook page, which started as a place for locals to interact virtually, and she figured she could do something similar for local businesses. After consulting with friends, Jody Sautner and Jen Fabry, they supported the idea and even helped provide a name—RBNY: Rockaway Businesses Need You. Hanna started the Facebook page in late March. What evolved was a place for Hanna to post menus, specials, items, contact info and anything else to get the message out there about what various local businesses were doing, to help them stay afloat. In turn, locals started contributing in their own ways, posting photos of their daily meals or products they bought from local businesses, to help grow support. As we go to press, in a month and a half, the group has grown to more than 2,500 members. With the page, Hanna’s efforts started to go above and beyond. As Easter approached, Hanna quickly saw that there was a high demand for Madelaine’s Chocolate at The Gift is Love, the only place in town where it was being sold after Madelaine’s closed its own store. So Hanna became the Easter bunny. She contacted Madelaine’s and expressed her desire to sell their chocolate to neighbors who were looking to continue the sweet tradition of having Madelaine's chocolate in their Easter baskets. lates, which Hanna advertised on the RBNY Facebook page. Forty-five minutes after she posted about it, Hanna says she had 192 comments from people placing orders. Hanna says she organized, packaged and sanitized about 200-250 orders, which she delivered personally, from Breezy Point, to across the peninsula, and even to Howard Beach. “It was insane, but I enjoyed it. It made people really happy,” Hanna said. Plus, it was for a good cause. Hanna marked up the chocolate by 20% in an effort to raise funds that will go toward purchasing gift cards at local businesses to raffle off or donate to families that don’t have the means to order takeout. When Easter passed, Hanna found a new project. After Eileen Savelli posted information about where to get lawn signs with messages like “Thank You First Responders & Essential Workers,” Hanna decided to work with her and reached out to the company, 2 Twins Printing, based in Stated Island. They said they would deliver sign orders of 20 or more. Hanna asked people on the page if there was any interest, and within 20 minutes, all 20 signs were claimed. And then demand grew. As we go to press, Hanna says she has ordered and delivered more than 600 lawn signs from Breezy to Rockaway to Howard Beach. The effort had her running around town so much, that she ran out of gas—literally. “I had just dropped off signs on Beach 128th Street when I ran out of gas. I still had 50 signs to deliver. My brother had to come with a 2-gallon gas can, so I had
enough to make it to the gas station,” Hanna said. The sign company owner, Gina Faillace Twin Bruno, agreed that $5 of every sign sale could be used as a donation. With this, more than $3,000 was raised, and that money has been put to good use. Working with Savelli, and several local businesses, Hanna put together Grab and Go packages for healthcare heroes. On Friday, May 1, Savelli and Hanna conducted their first drop-off to Bayview Urgent Care. The healthcare workers were treated to a meal from Callie’s, plus Grab and Go goodies such as skincare products from Posh, provided by Annette Lauritsch, O’Keefe’s lip balm, hand lotion and Children’s Miracle Network chocolate bars (the proceeds of which go to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital), provided by Mazzone Hardware, juice, water, granola bars and candy provided by Lenny of Belle Harbor Cards and fresh cookie packages from Fat Cardinal Bakery. The second drop off was to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, which received all of the goodies mentioned above, plus fresh fruit baskets provided by Rockaway Farmers Market. Another drop-off is planned for Beacon Rehabilitation Nursing Center on Thursday, May 7. Hanna isn’t stopping anytime soon. “I think we’re going to be in this for a while,” Hanna said. “But I’m happy to do it. It’s a labor of love and it keeps me busy. Stepping Up Relief Efforts in Far Rockaway By Katie McFadden
Curtis Turney-Rentas and fellow volunteers are doing what they can to ensure those in need in Far Rockaway aren’t forgotten during the coronavirus pandemic. Turney-Rentas of CT3Designs and the Far Rock National Pan-Hellenic Council (FRNPHC) formed FRNPHC last May to give those in Far Rockaway an opportunity to provide community service in their neighborhood. Their efforts haven’t stopped. As soon as coronavirus started impacting New York, Turney-Rentas and fellow volunteers again stepped up to the plate to make sure neighbors don’t go hungry, and that those on the frontline at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, are supported as they battle COVID-19 head on. In March, the group teamed up with First Presbyterian Church of Far Rockaway to provide food to families in need as part of their No Family Left
Hungry initiative. Every Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Turney-Rentas and fellow volunteers don their gloves and masks and head to the church at 896 Central Ave to hand out bags of perishable food items as well as hot plates to neighbors who need them. They then extended this effort by going to some of those who can’t come to them. On April 25, Turney-Rentas teamed up with other organizations and many volunteers to spend the day feeding homeless people who have been displaced from shelters at hotels such as LaQuinta Inn on Beach 43rd Street and as far as the Days Inn in the Bronx.
Together, they raised more than $4,500 for this effort and were able to feed more than 300 homeless individuals. When Turney-Rentas was contacted about food and water needs for the overnight staff at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, he and his volunteers mobilized and took action. They raised more than $2,000 in two days for food and supplies. On Friday, May 1, the volunteers delivered everything from hot plates to snacks, fruits, sandwiches and sweets to St. John’s. “This one was big because I was able to get people who are from Far Rockaway and those who aren’t to come together and support our frontliners,” Turney-Rentas said. Turney-Rentas had plenty of help with this effort, including from Chefs Isamar De La Cruz From Elevated Eats Inc., Stephanie Jeudy From EatsByRoazy, Chanel Brown From Keisha Kitchen andnd Nakaya Prince from Kayla Kitchen. Many also prepared sandwiches including Milagros Rentas, Sasha Turney,
Justina Aponte, Clarissa Aponte, Fatimah Barrie from BlackCardSTM, and Chimere McCassling from Chimmy Cuisine. Bakers included Kayla Lobby from Kayla KupsCakes, Tiffany Telesford from CocoaCakes, Angelica Fougere from AuntieA SweetTreats and Gloria Nazario from CattyCakesTreats. “Everyone got on this mission and made it possible and that’s what you call teamwork,” Turney-Rentas said. TO LAUREN AVIGLIANO QUARANTINE 12TH BIRTHDAY Last week, May 1st, my granddaughter, Lauren, celebrated her 12th birthday. When asked what she would like; a new bike, or computer, her answer was “I would like to help people who are in need of food”. She heard that the pantry at her parish was empty. She decided that the donations of food could be dropped off at their house. Lauren and her family got the word out and set up a table and tent in front of their home last Friday. To her surprise, they received so many donations they were able to fill up two car loads of food to donate to their parish, Our Lady of Victory in Floral Park, Queens. Father Tom Fusco, Pastor, expressed this was the largest food pantry donation ever received. Once Lauren saw how generous everyone was in giving and wanting to help others, she started a GO FUND ME SDJH, which in 48 hours has reached an incredible number in excess of $3,000. Lauren and her family are receiving
notice that many other food pantries are in need and this money will go to other pantry’s in Long Island. Lauren was featured on on the local TV news channel. It was a joy for me. We are so PROUD of what she did, thinking and caring about others, making right choices and setting a good example. This birthday will always be a memorable one for her. Update on Parkinson’s

Neurological conditions are the leading cause of non-traumatic disability worldwide, and the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is increasing more rapidly than other neurological disorders. PD is the most common form of parkinsonism, a term reflecting a group of neurological disorders with Parkinson’s disease-like movement problems such as rigidity, slowness, and tremor. Less common parkinsonisms include other neurodegenerative diseases (multisystem atrophy, progressive supranuclear palsy), drug-induced parkinsonism (usually due to psychoactive medications), and vascular parkinsonism. It is estimated that 6.1 million people globally had a PD diagnosis in 2016, 2.4 times higher than in 1990. The increased prevalence has been attributed to improved
methods to detect and diagnose the disease, greater awareness of it, aging populations with longer life expectancy, and possibly increased environmental exposures (e.g. pesticides, solvents, and heavy metals) associated with industrialization. It is estimated that this year will see 930,000 people living with a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in the U.S. PD is uncommon in individuals under the age of 50 and increases in prevalence with age, peaking between the ages of 85 to 89 years. It is more common in men. Most cases are idiopathic (no known cause), but there are known genetic and environmental causative factors. Diagnosing the disease is usually based on the patient’s history and physical examination. Brain imaging with MRI can be helpful. While primarily a disorder of movement, PD has a number of non-motor symptoms. Most common of these non-motor symptoms is rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior dis-
order. REM sleep is the deepest and most restorative stage of sleep. It is also where dreams are most vivid. REM sleep and its vivid dreams are normally accompanied by atonia (paralysis). In REM sleep behavior disorder, atonia is absent, causing the individual to flail the arms or legs, scream, cry out and otherwise behave in ways that may cause injury to the individual or a roommate, all while remaining in a deep sleep. REM sleep behavior disorder is seen in up to 50% of those with PD and may appear before motor symptoms do. Other non-motor symptoms include anosmia (loss of smell), constipation, incontinence, depression, micrographia (tiny handwriting), and excessive daytime sleepiness. There are slower- and faster-progressing forms of PD. Treatment is initially based on the use of medications that improve the function of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters (i.e. dopamine). These medications include
carbidopa-levodopa combinations, dopamine agonists, and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. Those who do not respond to these medications have a poorer prognosis, as do those individuals whose initial symptoms include cognitive impairment (dementia). Those who do respond to treatment may manage to keep symptoms controlled and continue to live a useful, functional life, for at least a few additional years. Physical, occupational, and balance therapy is helpful as well. Recently, when conventional treatments fail, electrical brain stimulation by use of an implanted electrode has shown promise. Most people with PD die from the same causes as age-matched individuals, however those who live with PD for many years may die from PD-related causes like aspiration pneumonia and complications from a fall. Stay The Course Dear Editor: We must stay the course and not reopen, until the number of new coronavirus cases is low enough that we can trace all persons who had contact with a new victim. We are now lucky enough to have states, Florida, Texas, Georgia and others, that will test whether opening up to soon would be a mistake. Will the number of cases increase in these states? These states will open parks,
beaches, restaurants and other places. Restaurants, I think will be the most likely place to become infected. If one worker becomes infected and does not follow health rules about wearing protective gear, how many possible people can that one person infect? The difference between being able to pass the virus to others and when a person has symptoms are days. A small mistake by a dish washer, cook, line person or waiter/waitress can easily spread the virus in that closed environment. Touching dishes or silverware without gloves. Breathing on a surface without a mask. Will the restaurant sanitize surfaces in the bathroom after each person uses them? A sick person going to a restaurant can easily infect other patrons and restaurant workers. Florida will not open businesses in areas where the virus cases are highest. How will they prevent a person from those areas driving to a business thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s open? It would be like Nassau County open-
ing businesses and NYC staying closed. How many people from Queens, do you think, would drive into Nassau County to eat out? I think by the second or the third week in May, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have our answer. And I think it will prove that staying closed was the correct move. From March 25 to May 1, NYC averaged around 3,763 new cases a day. From April 25 to May 2, NYC averaged around 2,280 new cases a day. We are slowly getting there, but we have a long way to go. MOVING: Local Heroes Of The Pandemic By Matthew Linares
BRS is a moving company and sometimes we do work in hospitals bringing in new furniture, setting up offices, etc. I would like to share with you a story of very uncommon circumstances and highlight an overlooked group of unsung heroes of the pandemic from our neighborhood. Heroes who could have stayed in the safety of their homes and done exactly what is being asked of them, but decided instead to suit up, go straight into the lion’s den, and help fight against the pandemic in every way they can. The story starts in mid-March when our Senior Project Manager, James Gargano, received a call from a Queens hospital employee. “We’re having a big problem at our hospital. Our nurses and doctors are being so overworked, overwhelmed and exhausted that by the end of their shift they literally can't pick up a coffee pot to make themselves coffee. We need labor to assist our medical staff during their shifts so that they can continue to work under these conditions without collapsing from exhaustion. Oh, and before you say no, please keep in mind that we're desperate and everyone else I called has already said no," he said. It was a difficult decision, but we ultimately decided to first, make sure the work would be as safe as possible and that if we send our staff into a hospital, they would be give all necessary PPE and proper training from medical professionals on how to avoid the virus. To which the hospital director said, "Absolutely, when can you start?" Sensing the eagerness in his voice, we knew it was important to them, so we knew we owed it to them to at least try to make it work. But then we had to turn around and explain what was being asked of us to our field staff and to see if anyone would even be willing to do so. Again, we are being asked to send our guys into a hospital,

in the epicenter of a pandemic, with no medical experience, while the pandemic is nearing its peak. When it's put into perspective, it's pretty easy to see why so many people said no, and a lot of guys did (and rightfully so), but just enough of them said "yes." We quickly needed to educate ourselves on safety protocols. Thankfully, my sister, Lauren Linares (Beach 138th street) and my girlfriend, Jenna Hoffman (Beach 148th Street), are both veteran ICU nurses and both of their units at this point were converted solely to COVID-19 patients at NYU Langone Hospital and New York Presbyterian Weil Cornell Hospital, respectively. to give us phenomenal safety instructions that they had received from two of the top- ranked hospitals in the world. At this point, we decided that we were not going to stop brave men from an opportunity to help so long as they were fully aware of what they were being

THE PENINSULA’S HEROES OF THE PANDEMIC Continued from Page 24 immediately began assisting the medical staff with their operations in any and every way possible, but also used his 10+ years of moving experience to suggest specific actions the hospital could take that would significantly improve the efficiency of the operation. Steve made a huge difference right away and the hospital knew it. The hospital asked to send him and his crew back the next day...and the next day...and the next day...and the day after... and the day after that. Steve had, in such a short time, become so important to the hospital that it wasn't until twenty-one shifts straight that Steve felt like his operation was running well enough that he felt comfortable enough to take a single day off. And then there’s Ryan McDade (Beach130th Street). Ryan is a lifelong friend and had worked on the trucks for us for a few summers during college. For the last few years, Ryan has been going through an apprentice training program to become an electrician. If I could think of one person who was built to handle this it would probably be... his dad, Steve, who's retired FDNY and built like a work horse. But next on my list would be Ryan McDade. On April 4, after our shift had ended, I was speaking to Ryan about how we had been assisting hospital staff and now more hospitals are calling, desperate for support, to which Ryan replied, "When can I start?" He started the next day at Harlem Hospital. As I'm writing this, he has not taken off a single day since. I just want to reiterate that Ryan, despite not being a regular, employee has worked backbreaking and mentally draining 12-hour shifts, seven days a week for 25 straight days. When asked if he needed a break, he said "I'll work every day until they don't need me anymore." Ryan was born to help others and he's done, and continues to do, a phenomenal job. Before we knew it, seven major hospitals were requesting our services 24/7. The amount of cases was growing exponen-

tially in New York and it felt like each day was harder and worse than the last. The level to which people were overwhelmed is something that I couldn't stand to see and only made me more frustrated that we simply did not have enough resources to be able to support the hospitals. Enter Kyle Strehle. Kyle Strehle (Beach 138th Street) is a neighbor, former BRS employee, lifelong friend, and will be in the next class of "New York's Bravest," the FDNY. As fate would have it, I ran into his sister, Caroline, who just happens to also be a frontline hero (there are heroes everywhere in this story) working as a nurse at Memorial Sloane Kettering Hospital, while I was driving to check in on our staff working a shift in Harlem. We began to discuss our company’s dilemma with helping hospitals that are in dire need. To which Caroline said, "Call Kyle." I proceeded to let Kyle know of the dilemma we faced and asked if he’d be interested in helping. To which he responded, "When do you need me to start?" Kyle started his first 12-hour shift the next day. By some miracle, Kyle found four other brave young men from our Rockaway Beach, and

Breezy Point communities who wanted to take on the challenge. Damon Anderson, Joe Brown, Luke Erhard and Christopher Ray were also willing to start THE NEXT DAY. Kyle has probably been the single most important person in getting the support these hospitals needed. And just like many others before him, since his first day, April 8, Kyle has not taken off a single day working 23 straight 12-hour shifts. Two more heroes on our team are Luke Erhard and Joe Brown. These two answered the call on April 8. Again, these men, on a day’s notice, decided to leave the comfort of their homes to go help fight like hell alongside our frontline medical workers in any and every way they could. They have been complimented for their willingness to help in any situation. Both Luke and Joe started their 12-hour shifts on April 8 and, you guessed it, have not taken a single day off since. Next up we have Damon Anderson and Brian Ostrander. Two professional young men who also answered the call when they were needed most at one of St Joseph’s Hospitals in Wayne, NJ. These two started April 8 and can you guess what I’m about to say next? Both Damon and Brian
have not missed a single 12-hour shift since the day they began. Next we have Garett Murnan, Christopher Ray and Kiel Anderson. Garett has been working at what was considered ground zero of the pandemic—Elmhurst since April 10. Chris Ray has been working at St. Josephs since April 8. And Kiel, like his brother, Damon, has been absolutely key to us filling out our daily roster by being flexible at Queens, St Josephs, Harlem Hospital, Elmhurst, you name it—Kiel has been there helping since the day he started. A few very honorable mentions go to Matt Schonfeld, Dylan Carey, Michael Barna, and Drew Donaghue, who worked as many shifts as they could even though some had school and other obligations. Rockaway Beach is my home and the amount of pride I’ve always had in my community has been immeasurable. But never have I seen more heroism, and never have I had more pride to call this place home than I do now. From what started as a desperate phone call for help, became a beautiful story of so many people who decided to leave the comfort of their own homes to go out and sacrifice their safety to help others.

I cannot believe that this situation has created an even bigger divide than the Trump people vs. Trump haters. I have unfriended and “unfollowed” a record amount of people since the end of March. I have also begun to dislike a large amount of people. Here are some reasons why I am currently hating a large amount of people: (Yes, I know hate is a strong word). 1). The people who need to post and/
or comment on social media about every news event. When did you become a journalist whose job it is to inform the public? I will see something on the news and if I could bet when and who would post about what I just saw I would be winning big money. It is like clockwork that person will post about the most recent news story. Also, why do some people feel the need to comment on every post? If you disagree, it is possible to move on and keep your mouth shut or your comments to yourself. Some of these people are the same ones complaining
about how tiring working from home is. Well, it must be tough when you are on social media all day. Also: do not share stuff you did not thoroughly fact check. PLEASE many ignorant people read your post and believe it. FAKE NEWS. 2). The new medical doctors who must have gotten their MD after their name while I was not looking. According to the New York Times, Governor Cuomo stated “that he would start requiring people in New York to wear masks or face coverings in public whenever social distancing was not possible.” When I am walking around the neighborhood, I try to walk weird places I know will be less populated. And if I am walking, and people are more than six feet away from me, I am not wearing a mask or covering. I also cross the street or walk in the street if people are coming to pass by me. I do not know why so many people are yelling “Where is your mask?” Shut up and mind your own business. I am not within six feet of you. And if you are so afraid, do not go to Riis Park or

Detach and Listen With extreme changes come unexpected gifts. With great difficulties come great opportunities. Trying to keep the positive spin going as we move forward day after day. The only way to go, stopping the stories inside our heads that bring us to an unhappy place. And taking the time to really think about what is going on. There have been some positives as a result of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;pausesâ&#x20AC;? like cleaner air, for one. Harmful emissions have been so diminished that people are
seeing things they never saw before. We can only hope that our elected officials will take this as a starting point and make the decisions necessary for our planet to continue to heal. We can think about what we can do to increase the healing, one by one in our own small world. Every single act will have an effect. If we are conscious of that on a moment-by-moment basis day-by-day, we will contribute to a wholesome approach to the longevity of our planet.

So, give it some thought and pass it around. Now to the subject of this column: practicing withdrawing from the senses and listening to the inner voice. This is actually one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;limbs of yoga,â&#x20AC;? sort of a bridge between the physical practices like breathwork and moving through poses and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;way of livingâ&#x20AC;? practices, but whether we connect this to yoga or not doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter. Thinking about getting away from the things that work against us out of desire or addiction, like eating or drinking things regularly that do not serve us and engaging the mind with too much stupid conflicting media events, becoming aware of sensory overload. Then we become quiet and still, we get to a place of peace. All sorts of things arise. We can control what we want to think about; we can push out the broken record recordings. And we can begin to ask questions of ourselves related to the meaning of our own lives. Detaching from the

Taking stock of who, what, where, when, how and deciding to move forward, either in the same way or to make some changes, whatever they may be. A fresh start. A new beginning. Getting in touch with our lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose and not just doing and doing a lot of things that add up to nothing! I can tell you it takes time and maybe we may never define it to our satisfaction, but it is a great journey to be on. Visualize the elephant/boy deity who swings his trunk from side to side, pushing any obstacles that are in the way. Strip away the shoulds, coulds, musts, ares, woulds. Create that comfortable steady place that is yours alone and then listen to your inner voice. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Birthing A Business? Dear Enchantress, I want to start my own business, selling retail items, and also, I do reiki and tarot cards. I make jewelry and take photos as hobbies and other things. Honestly, it all feels like too much, like the jack of all trades and master of none. I feel like everyone will think I'm a con-artist and don't really know how to do anything well. I admire your work, and I get the feeling that you also enjoy your work. I went to your one woman show, but we didn't get to meet. I like the vibe I get from you. I can tell you're real, and you don't care what people think of you. I'm also a special education teacher, which is something I knew you were, too.
So please help, how do I get started? I have tons of time on my hands now, and I think I want to own a business, and that word "business" really scares me, like I'm going to have to take money from my friends or I'll feel crappy asking for money. Right now, I do readings for free and reiki for donation, or also free. What are my first steps? I have energy and time! Dear Business Betty! I love this kind of request! During this pandemic, if I didn't have my business as an anchor, it would not be a good situation. You're off to an amazing start! Just the way you talk about "what you do" feels very clear to me. Having an online business in
these times can be outstanding (depending on your mindset) and even if you plan on being mostly in person, it's a great way to build your confidence muscles to be seen as a business owner of the metaphysical kind. And you're right, some people may judge, and may talk about you and it’s crucial to have support or those judgements may get to you. Here are several steps. I recommend doing them in order of what appeals to you. I guide folks in business from a place of what is pleasurable to you, as much as you can. It will be confronting, awkward, and sometimes will feel counterintuitive, which is why it's best to have support, so you can lean on someone else when any doubt comes up. Running a business will trigger every feeling that may have come up in adolescence. So, it's the greatest place for personal growth! One step is to create an online "show." Give it a title, choose a time and day of the week where you will show up consistently and always err on the side of giving. Give readings, answer
Page 29 questions, and be generous. This show will be a place for you to get your "business sea legs." You'll practice working with visibility and meeting new people. If that freaks you out, then another "stage" you can create is a group on Facebook. And in this group, allow only people you wish to talk your talk and walk your walk. No family members or “judge-y” people. And put your show there. Another step is to write. Write down the problems you help people solve. Then write down the problems you love helping people solve. Another step is to offer your free sessions in exchange for a testimonial or feedback, which you can use in many places. In last week’s Rockaway Times, we featured John Roberts and Dee McClean and their fifty-plus years of friendship. We were sent this photo and thought it deserved to stand alone. This awesome squad went 19-1 under coaches Jack O’Neill and Bill Ryan. Children’s Book Highlights Essentials A Rockaway husband and wife team have joined forces to highlight the amazing work being done by people during these tumultuous times. Ryan Sirgiovanni and his wife, Bridget, have written, illustrated and published a children's book called The Essential Heroes: Gratitude Book to Thank the 2020 Essential Workers. According to Ryan, they created this book to ”spread the gratitude and for our kids to appreciate the hard work and dedication of all the Essential Workers. In the book, we portray the Essential Workers as real-life superheroes and highlight their characteristics and important traits in a positive, rhyming way for young children. We include many Es-
sential Heroes: healthcare workers, first responders as well as food workers, sanitation, custodial, delivery, transportation, scientists, military and all other workers that keep Essential businesses going.” The book also teaches children the importance of washing your hands, not touching your face, social distancing and giving our heroes a cheer every night at 7 p.m. The authors are using a portion of proceeds to print and distribute free books to children of Essential Workers in the NYC area.
