Free Sunscreen Available on the Boardwalk By Katie McFadden
Forgot the sunscreen? You may be in luck. Starting this summer, you can get free sunscreen along certain spots on the boardwalk. As part of a two-year pilot program, NYC Parks, along with IMPACT Melanoma and BrightGuard, free sunscreen dispensers are now on the boardwalk. The bright yellow, automatic, touch-free dispensers contain SPF 30 sunscreen and are located at Beach 9th, 17th, 30th, 59th, 67th, 86th, 97th, 106th and 115th Streets. Beaches in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island also have dispensers. BrightGuard sunscreens are free of parabens, scents and Oxybenzone. It is safe to apply to children over the age of six months. More information about the sunscreen used can be found at www.BrightGuard.com. In June 2016, New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer
advocated for free sunscreen distribution in City parks and beaches to aid in combatting the national average of one in five who are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer. Through the research highlighted in the Comptroller’s proposal, the report described successful programs in Miami and Boston, and included recommendations that the City work to implement similar efforts that would benefit sun-loving New Yorkers.

And the Flag Wasn’t There By Katie McFadden
At the baffle wall at Beach 127th Street, you’ll find a plaque reading, “This flag pole is dedicated in memory of our neighbor, LT. Joseph Agnello, FDNY, who made the supreme sacrifice while rescuing others at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. ‘Beach 127th Street Will Never Forget.’” However, there is now no flag in sight. The residents of Beach 127th Street have lost a long battle. After Memorial Day, contractors for the Department of Parks and Recreation removed the memorial flagpole from the area so that a concrete pad can be placed inside the baffle wall area. Following Sandy, neighbors of the block pitched in to purchase and install a flagpole to honor Lt. Agnello. In January, neighboring homeowners were told that the flag was placed
without authorization and that it would need to be removed for the baffle wall project. Back in January, a Parks Department spokesperson explained, saying, “While we are sure that the homeowner’s heart was in the right place, it’s important that any installation on parkland is properly permitted.” In the weeks following the news, neighbors met with the Parks Department and expressed their outrage that the memorial would be removed. However, as the flag came down this week, it seems the city has won.

FERRY NOW LEAVING 15 MINUTES EARLIER

Ask and you shall receive. After receiving input from riders, NYC Ferry has released a new schedule for the weekday Rockaway ferry, which will now leave earlier, with the first trip at 5:15 a.m. The weekday ferry now leaves from Rockaway and Pier 11, 15 minutes past the hour, instead of on the half hour. The first ferry from Rockaway is at 5:15 a.m. and the first from Pier 11 is at 6:15 a.m. The last ferry from Rockaway and Pier 11 is at 8:15 p.m. This schedule change also affects the shuttle bus schedule. For the
full schedules, visit www.ferry. nyc. The weekend schedule is unaffected and will continue to run on the half hour, beginning at 6:30 a.m. from Rockaway and 7:30 a.m. from Pier 11. The new ferry schedule went into effect on Thursday, June 1, to coincide with the launch of the new South Brooklyn route. The change was also made at the request of riders who wanted an earlier start. “With the growth of our system and the launch of our new South Brooklyn Route, we are implementing new schedules beginning Thursday, June 1st. These new schedules are designed to improve the connectivity between route stops as we respond to ridership demand,” NYC Ferry said on their website. The new South Brooklyn route goes to and from Bay Ridge and Pier 11, making stops in Sunset Park, Red Hook, Atlantic Avenue, Dumbo and Governor’s Island seasonally.

Random Chuckles I heard a story recently that gave me a chuckle and if there were any way I could claim it as my own, I certainly would, but I can’t pull off the required Scottish accent. I’d actually heard this classic a couple years ago and had forgotten about it until the recent retell. It reminded me how some things and stories become common knowledge and live on, while others — equally deserving — just fade away. Others live on but to a too small audience. (I’m doing my part to expand the audience to my 10 readers).
Others, like the one I heard, you just forget. Anyway, some of you know this one that involved Bono, the lead singer of the band U2 and a noted philanthropist. It’s genius in so many ways. We’ve all rolled our eyes as athletes and movie stars and musicians sometimes lecture us about what’s wrong with the world. They’ve got the right, I suppose. And they often say they have the forum and they’re obligated to speak up about whatever is their cause. So, we roll our eyes and maybe even boo, but few have responded like a Scots-
man who hit it out of the park, way out of the park, a few years ago when he delivered a retort that lives on in the Snark Hall of Fame. At a U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, the aforementioned Bono asked the audience for total quiet, as he wanted to draw attention to starvation and poor medical services in Africa. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence. And then leaned toward the microphone and said solemnly, “Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies.” The crowd remained quiet, maybe a little depressed, until the voice with the Scottish broke the silence. "Well, stop clapping, ya evil bastard!" Goodbye silence. Church giggles gave way to guffaws. The guy broke the tension in the air, ridiculed the sanctimonious rock star, and had the nerve to yell out something that might have gotten him beat up. It woulda been funny enough if the guy just said, “Well, stop clapping,” but adding “ya evil bastard,” made it Hall of Fame.

Page 5 Hehe. Ya evil bastard. Not even in the same league, but I was thinking of how funny things can pop into your head out of nowhere, memories of something funny or even silly. You might just laugh suddenly and somebody nearby will ask what’s so funny? You might share but more likely you say nothing because it’s too random or they won’t appreciate it. I know more than one person who will, randomly, think of a scene from Family Feud with Steve Harvey and just start cackling. The show is notorious for some of the things people say. One segment cracks the funny bone of some people every time they think of it. Contestants were asked to say a thing that follows the word “Pork” as in Pork Belly or Pork and beans or Pork ribs. Well, one contestant was asked – what word follows Pork? - and what was his completely serious response? “Cupine.” (Sounds like Q-pine). Cupine. As in Pork-Cupine. Here’s hoping the evil bastard and the Cupine stories live on.

The following Saturday (June 17) voting will take place at 10 a.m. at Beach 67th Street, noon at Beach 59th Street and 2 p.m. at Beach 98th Street. The third and final round will take place at Caracas (Beach 106th) on Saturday, July 2 and a winner will be announced. And both offer more than beer. Last weekend’s overcast was perfect for these casual, fun places. We’re not sure if these places will compete but we know the winners are locals and visitors who now have two more great options on the social scene. ***** Dino Tomassetti who had just turned 90 died on Friday, May

Missing the sound of bagpipes, Irish tunes and the tap of a step dancer’s hard shoe? You don’t need to wait until March in the Irish Riviera. The 5th Annual Rockaway Beach/ Breezy Point Irish Festival is this weekend. On Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, the Irish fest returns to St. Camillus (Beach 100th). The parking lot will be packed with Irish bands, vendors selling Irish goods and Irish eyes will be smiling as they enjoy corned beef sandwiches, with a Guinness or other brew to wash it down. The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 21 brought back this longtime tradition following Hurricane Sandy and it has grown ever since. “We hold this festival each year to promote Irish culture and heritage. In this beach community, there is a large amount of Irish people or people of Irish descent, so we want to celebrate that,� festival chairperson John Moroney said. “We started planning this before Sandy and decided to go forward with it. There were many people struggling and going through tough times and we wanted to bring something positive, and we received a strong welcoming from the community and we were encouraged to keep it going.� The first festival was held in June 2013. Not only does the festival promote Irish culture, it also serves as a fundraiser for the community. Each year, the AOH donates the proceeds towards different churches and organizations like St. Camillus and the Knights of Columbus. They have donated roughly $140,000 over the last four years, according to Moroney. Admission for this year’s festival is $10 at the gate and kids 12 and under are free. One of the biggest highlights of the Irish Festival is the music, and there will be plenty of great tunes. The music starts
at noon each day. Saturday’s lineup includes The Ed Deasy "Rubble" Band, the Cunningham Brothers, the Canny Brothers and Shilelagh Law will top off the show at 6 p.m. Sunday’s performers include Andy Cooney, the Brooklyn Bards, The Willie Lynch Band and U2 tribute band, Unforgettable Fire will end the show at 6 p.m. There will be plenty more acts in between to keep the crowds entertained including Irish dancing from the O’Malley Irish Dance Academy and bagpipe bands like the Breezy Point Catholic Club Pipes and Drums. The event will go on rain or shine and people of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to come out for the weekend. For the adults, there will be beer for sale from sponsors such as Guinness and Budweiser. There will also be a raffle for a trip for two to the motherland, Ireland. For the kids, there will be bouncy castles, a bouncy slide and refreshments like popcorn and cotton candy. The past couple years have been eventful for the local AOH. With 230 members and growing, it is the second largest AOH division in New York. In addition to bringing back the Irish Festival, they finally found a home. Last fall, the AOH took over what was Pebbles in Roxbury and opened it as The Hibernian, which serves as a bar and restaurant and a place to promote Irish culture with live Irish music weekly and even instructors that teach Gaelic. Seeking free academic tutoring for your child? Look no further than the Josephine Johnson Tutorial Program (JJTP) hosted by St. John’s Baptist Church, located on the corner of Beach 74th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. JJTP was started at the church more than 25 years ago, by parishioner, Josephine Johnson, who had a passion for ensuring that Rockaway’s youth would be progressive readers and have good academic standing. Though the program had a three-year hiatus due to the church’s physical building being devastated by Hurricane Sandy, since 2015, it has been back up and running, offering English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tutoring and character building. According to veteran public school teacher and longtime Far Rockaway resident, Jondrea Williams-Graves, who runs the program, more than 25 students from local schools such as Challenge Preparatory Charter School, P.S. 183, St. Rose of Lima, St. Camillus, Waterside Children's Studio School, and other school districts in Freeport, Long Island and Astoria, Queens, currently attend the program. The program has open enrollment and runs from October to June. Upon entrance into the program, the students are given an ELA and Mathematics pre-assessment to test them on what they already know, and need more instruction on. Williams-Graves said, “I have been a teacher for over 17 years in a similar school district to Rockaway. My passion has always been to propel students to be academic scholars within our public school system. So when my pastor of the church, Elder Dr. James D. Williams, II, approached me to spearhead the rejuvenation of the program, it was a definite, ‘Yes!’ “This has been one of the best opportunities presented to me to motivate and engage our local youth to go the next level ac-
ademically. We’ve had scholars who have advanced from below proficiency level to becoming advanced for their grade level. “Our ultimate goal is to prepare academic scholars for Kingdom Work, which is where the character development comes in. It means that we want them to excel and work hard to impact their local community and the world.” Students are also offered a test prep to prepare for New York State Common Core ELA and Mathematics Tests. Williams-Graves said that all volunteer tutors are fingerprinted to make sure they have clearance to be around children. Students attend every Saturday throughout the school year from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Currently the program has kindergarten through eighth grade students, however, they do accommodate high school students. Local businesses such as Boardwalk Pizza and Elegante Restaurant generously donate free lunches to the students and volunteers at every tutoring session. Also recently, Arverne by the Sea developers in conjunction with Councilman Donovan Richards and Congressman Gregory Meeks, presented laptops to the students with the goal of ensuring that they have access to technology. The program is ending for the current school year. However, interested parents can register their children for school year 20172018 in the second week of this coming September. Here’s To The Raafs Dear Editor: In your May, 25, 2017 edition, I enjoyed reading the fine article written by Michelle Raaf, celebrating the 65 years of marriage of her grandparents, Richard and MaryLou Raaf. Or as I always addressed them, Mr. & Mrs Raaf. I first came in contact with Mr. Raaf, when I briefly played football for St. John's Home in the early 70's. When I went for the team physical, I was diagnosed with a hernia, which at the time I thought was very cool. After the sur-
THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 2017 gery I realized that having a hernia was not so cool. The St. John's Home football team used to practice weeknights on the beach and used to draw quite the crowd on the boardwalk. I guess the theory was after playing in soft sand all week, we'd run like deer for the weekend games. As I was on the injured reserve list (IR) before the season even began, I never experienced the “running like a deer” portion of the game. Mr. Raaf in those days, with his crew cut and no-nonsense approach to coaching, was the ideal prototypical football coach. I thought he was the toughest guy in Rockaway, the way he kept dumping me and my teammates on our rear ends in drills. In my high school years I had the opportunity to play basketball for Mr. Raaf, when he was coaching at St. Camillus. Richie Jr. and all of my buddies were on that team and I enjoyed playing that season immensely. Playing basketball for Mr. Raaf was
a little more enjoyable, than playing football for him. Maybe because he knocked me around a little less, or because I made it through the season without a hernia. (I'm still trying to figure that one out). After one close loss to the best team in the league, the Raafs opened their home and threw the team a nice party. In those days there were no participation trophies and losses were not celebrated. Mr. Raaf told us at the party that we played as hard as we could and that he was proud of us. Coming from Mr. Raaf, that meant the world. As the years went by I moved from Rockaway but returned often. For a few years I returned as a basketball official at the St. Francis de Sales Summer Basketball Classic. One night I was refereeing a girls’ league game, when I noticed that Mr. Raaf was coaching one of the teams. The way I noticed Mr. Raaf, was he was yelling and screaming at me, for every
Page 13 call I made against his team. After the first quarter I went over and said “Mr. Raaf, I'm Charlie Moran. If you keep screaming at me, I'm going to have to T you up.” Mr. Raaf responded, “I'm sorry Charlie, I didn't recognize you, I'll behave the rest of the game.” The Raafs influenced at least two generations of athletes in the Rockaway Peninsula. One group of not so young men that are now nearing 60 years of age and a group of young ladies that are considerably younger. I would like to congratulate Rich and MaryLou Raaf on their 65 years of marriage. Charles Moran

Boats to Be Blessed on the Bay By Katie McFadden
Fleet Week may be over, but a fleet of another sort will pass through Jamaica Bay on Saturday, and it’ll be a sight to see. A flotilla will make its way past the peninsula, as dozens of boaters will have their vessels blessed at The Wharf to start the 2017 boating season. In its 62nd year, the annual Blessing of the Fleet is set to take place in our local waters on Saturday, June 3. This annual tradition, held by the United Inter Yacht Clubs Association (UIYCA), is a way for local yacht clubs to get together, bring out their ships and have them blessed by clergy members, in the hopes of having a safe, successful boating season. The blessing typically takes place around Canarsie Pier, but with The Wharf owner Bob Leckie opening his restaurant and dock for the event this year, this tradition will take place in our backyard. On Saturday, dozens of boats
from eight local yacht clubs will pass through Jamaica Bay. Hudson River Yacht Club, Anabus Yacht Club, Old Mill Yacht Club, Riley’s Yacht Club, North Channel Yacht Club, Diamond Point Yacht Club, Brooklyn Yacht Club and Howard Beach Motor Boat Club will be participating in this event, each bringing anywhere from four to 15 boats. Almost 70 boats are expected. At around 10:30 a.m., the ceremony will begin at The Wharf with UIYCA Commander Susan Brown leading a salute to the flag and casting a wreath into the bay in memory of deceased club members. Local elected officials and US Coast
Guard Commanders will be on hand to give speeches. At the sound of cannon fire, the procession will begin. “This will be a parade of sorts, a flotilla,” Brown said. Starting at 11 a.m., the first group of ships from the Hudson River Yacht Club will float by The Wharf as three deacons will bless the boats. The UIYCA’s Blessing of the Fleet has been a longtime tradition, that has taken place every year, except the summer after Hurricane Sandy. The storm changed some of the dynamics of the event. “Prior to the storm, this used to be a judged competition where points were given for uniformity, distance between boats, flags properly placed at the bow and other criteria. It was a big deal and the winning yacht club would receive a plaque to hang up. However, after Sandy, everyone was so devastated, boats were destroyed and some had floated down the boulevard, and no one had it in them to go the full distance
for this event while they were picking up the pieces of their homes. But in June 2014, the UIYCA wanted to bring back some normalcy. They agreed to skip the judging and just invite everyone to have their boats blessed and bring back this tradition that everyone looks forward to,” Brown said. Why is this event so important to local boaters? “People are proud of their boats. They have a love for boating, for Jamaica Bay and for their yacht clubs. They’re proud and they want to show it, and it’s nice to have their boats blessed as everyone wants a safe boating season,” Brown said. “It brings together all of these yacht clubs, which are part of this large, warm community. It’s a unique event because in New York City, you think of the hustle and bustle and concrete and skyscrapers, but here we are floating around Jamaica Bay, being taken to a different place, mentally and physically.”

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid, or narcotic, that is posing an increasing worldwide public health risk. First synthesized in 1960, fentanyl was and still is used for general anesthesia in operating rooms. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is also used in hospice settings for pain relief. It is available as an injectable liquid, pill, spray, oral lozenge, white powder, and patch (Duragesic). Unfortunately it is appearing in the illegal street drug market where it is causing a rise in overdose deaths. Prince died of a fentanyl overdose and thousands of counterfeit pills were found in his house, many containing fentanyl. Fentanyl causes respiratory depression by suppressing the respiratory drive center located in the mid-brain. This respiratory suppression is much stronger with fentanyl than with any other opiate. Many people who die of a fentanyl overdose appear to have been unaware they were taking the drug. Heroin wholesales for $65,000 a kilogram while fentanyl can be bought for about $3,500 a kilogram, which is why many drug dealers are mixing fentanyl with heroin and cocaine. Recently two illicit labs were found in California and Utah where they were making counterfeit Xanax and OxyContin pills using fentanyl. Canada has declared a public health crisis because of illicit fentanyl. Most illicit fentanyl in Canada enters the country from the west coast where it is known as “China white.” In the U.S., most illegal fentanyl is smuggled over the Mexican border. Fentanyl is also being sold as MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine), aka ecstasy. From 2012 to 2014 the number of reported deaths from fentanyl more than doubled going from
2,628 to 5,544. Also it is estimated that 41 percent of the 7,100 heroin-related deaths during this period involved fentanyl. Traditional drug-enforcement policies emphasize use reduction. Cracking down on illegal laboratories and other links in the supply chain will probably help disrupt the fentanyl market. Other enforcement policies can sometimes have unintentional public health harms however. For example, targeting buyers caught with syringes may increase needle sharing, raising the risk of HIV transmission. Some police departments and prosecutors have sought a non-traditional strategy of holding individuals and organizations (i.e. gangs) liable for selling drugs containing fentanyl, even if these drugs did not cause immediate harm. Drug treatment programs may pose risks to those individuals who continue to use at some level by reducing tolerance. There is a high incidence of overdoses in those just released from prison, jails, and other secure locations because of reduced tolerance. There have also been inadvertent overdoses in children who are exposed to legal fentanyl patches, which is why the recommendation on disposing of a patch is to fold it over on itself with the sticky surfaces facing in. Naloxone, which reverses narcotic overdoses, must be used in higher doses for a longer period in fentanyl overdoses. First responders carry naloxone kits and these kits should be available to the general public and especially to users, but more education of both first responders and the public is needed. In 1835, after almost two centuries of European colonization from the Dutch and the English, a rip-roaring fire erupted in lower Manhattan that burned everything to the ground from Broad Street to the East River. It was a devastating fire that destroyed homes, businesses and the architecture of old New York that the Dutch had first established. The only thing that saved the west side of Broad Street was the fact that the street was so broad that the fire couldn’t leap across it. But with that loss, opportunity arose and the chance to rebuild all that was there before, only better. It’s the reason so many of the older buildings that we know today were built in the 1840’s in the financial district. President Trump promises to rebuild the so-called crumbling
infrastructure of America. It was actually President Eisenhower who built the interstate highway system that we enjoy today, paving the way for Americans to do what they love best: drive! And it helped to invent the trucking industry to deliver goods throughout this great land. However, what the current CEO in charge has misdiagnosed is that America, and New York in particular, has been in a rebuilding phase for the last 16 years since 9/11 and more recently Sandy, and we are on the cusp of enjoying the fruits of the efforts of those that actually started this boom, just like in 1835 and after. What do I mean? Well, think about it. We now have a brand new boardwalk running along our fabulous beach that is buffeted with new dunes, sea-grass and trap-bags. We now have a brand new ferry service that costs about half what it once did, runs all day long, and comes with software apps and a new dock. And how about the new cashless tolls? Will traffic move

more quickly through the bridges and tunnels now? Will Rockaway traffic not be backed up at the end of a long summer day leaving the beach? I am originally from Greenpoint, and that whole town has gone through a metamorphosis, some good, and some bad. But the construction of the new Kosciusko Bridge in record time is truly something to admire. If you are driving west toward the bridge, traffic moves very smoothly, removing the bottleneck that once was. The eastbound side still has traffic, but the plan is to build a twin and to have two bridges, effectively providing a stent to the heart of this traffic conundrum. Let’s not forget bridges closer to home such as those on the Belt Parkway between Howard Beach and Plum Beach, as the government has methodically been replacing the older structures with modern gems that speed traffic along the belt. At some point the new Tappan Zee bridge will open too and uncongest the artery to upstate as well.

Don’t get me wrong, traffic is still a nightmare in New York, but ever so slowly, these major public construction projects are coming to fruition and they will serve us well through the next 50 years. And how about the subways, admittedly still not perfect, especially if you are on the LIRR or Metro-North, but consider the new Second Avenue Subway, you can get on that train from the Upper East Side and take it right to Sheepshead Bay! Or how about the beautiful Oculus that is now connected to the new Fulton Street Station on one side and the Westfield Shopping Center on the other side. Slowly, New York is emerging from its cocoon again and will unfurl its wings and fly. These things don’t take months or years, they take decades in some cases, and their architectural beauty, functionality and form make lasting impressions on how we live, commute and see life. It’s happening all around us at breakneck speed, all we have to do is look around!

Poster-sized photos adorn the boardwalk at Beach 17th (we met some great NYC Parks guys enjoying putting them up), also on Beach 32nd, Beach 98th, Beach 116th and there are some at Riis Park, too. What gives? The photos are fi-
nalists in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. It’s been a group effort as we have gotten help from John Cori, NYC Parks, The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Ferry and the Rockaway Artists Alliance. These photos are in the running for a $500 top prize. Public judging will begin June 11.

Tile Painting By Artie Wallace
Do you have a tile backsplash in your kitchen or tile walls in your bathroom that are in good shape, but the colors are out of date? Why re-tile when you can save money by painting them? This project will give your tiles a new look and add a few more years to their life. Here’s how: 1- Clean the tile thoroughly. 2- Sand the tile using 120 grit sandpaper, to remove some of the glaze finish. Clean again after sanding. 3- Tape off any edges as needed. 4- Apply two coats of a Latex Bonding Primer. Let dry between coats.
5- Apply two coats of two-part epoxy paint, such as Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile. Allow drying time between coats. 6- After painting, let set for 24 hours, then apply a spray-on tile sealer. When Painting: 1- Always use a foam roller or a ¼in nap roller for a smoother finish. 2- Paint the lines and edges first using a 1inch synthetic brush. 3- Immediately after painting the lines and edges, pass a dry roller over to smooth out any brush marks and remove excess. 4- Keep a damp rag handy to clean up any paint that may get on other areas. THANK GOD FOR TERM LIMITS!
Were all of you just as confused as I was when several weeks ago our City Council Speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito, just couldn't contain herself and had to fly down to Puerto Rico to personally greet and hug Oscar Lopez Rivera on the day he was released under a commutation issued by (then) President Obama?
Perhaps I should mention that Speaker Mark-Viverito's newly released terrorist buddy was co-founder of The Armed Forces of National Liberation (FALN), a Marxist-Leninist organization, which in the 1970s fought to make Puerto Rico an independent communist nation and was responsible for more than 100 bombings in New York, Chicago and other cities, including the 1975 bombing at Fraunces Tavern in Manhattan that killed four people and injured 43. Lopez Rivera was convicted of several serious charges including, seditious conspiracy, use of force to commit robbery, and the interstate transportation of firearms and ammunition to aid in the commission of a felony and sentenced to 55 years in federal prison in 1981. At the time of his arrest, Lopez Rivera declared himself a to be
combatant in an anti-colonial war against the United States to liberate Puerto Rico from U.S. domination but his request to be assigned "prisoner of war" status was denied. By the way, our Council Speaker's buddy was also sentenced to an additional 15 years in prison for conspiring to escape from the Leavenworth federal prison in 1988. So anyway, Mark-Viverito travels to Puerto Rico and hooks up with her just released convicted FALN terrorist buddy and then arranges to bring him back to New York City to be "honored" at the upcoming Puerto Rican Day Parade on June 11. Fortunately, for those of us here in NYC of sound mind, there are several organizations and prominent individuals out there: (Univision, NBC, Telemundo, Jet Blue, AT&T, Coca Cola, Corona, Goya
Foods, the NY Yankees, Governor Cuomo, State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Police Commissioner James O'Neill, as well as the Hispanic Societies of both the NYCPD and NYCFD to mention a few), who actually think Mark-Viverito's idea of honoring a terrorist at a parade in a city having lost thousands of citizens to terrorist attacks might not actually be in good taste and have stated they will not sponsor or participate in the parade. To add fuel to the fire, just 10 days after Lopez Rivera release, yet another terror attack in Manchester, England killed 22 innocents. Of course, as far as Speaker Mark-Viverito is concerned, all of that is just "water off a duck's back" as her priority has always been anchored to her dream Continued on page 31

Continued from Page 30 of an independent Puerto Rico and not with the citizens of this city as their elected official or her obligation as a United States citizen. Case in point — as a councilwoman, Mark-Viverito long refused to recite the pledge of allegiance at the start of each Council session as a symbolic act of protest against the United States because she was looking for Puerto Rico to become independent. Of course, once she realized she could run for and win the Council Speaker’s position, political expediency trumped ideology, and Mark-Viverito was suddenly standing tall and proud in the Council Chamber reciting the pledge of allegiance along with her colleagues. Soon thereafter she won the speaker’s position with a unanimous vote of the City Council - go figure! State Sen. Ruben Diaz, a Democrat who is also from Puerto Rico, also has had harsh words for Mark-Viverito in the
past. "She doesn’t care about America," said Diaz, who added that he believes Mark-Viverito is "a communist from Puerto Rico." Diaz’s comments came following a 2014 ceremony commemorating the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011. Mark-Viverito was the only attendee who chose not to put her hand over her heart during the national anthem, which caught the eye of those who knew of Mark-Viverito’s continual refusal to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the City Council and elsewhere. "She goes on sacred ground and disrespects America that way," said Diaz following the incident. "It’s disrespectful to the heroes, the fallen who died on 9/11, it’s disrespectful to the victims and families of 9/11." You should also know that Lopez Rivera is not the only terrorist Mark-Viverito supports. Earlier this year, and less than a week after the Paris terror attacks, she tweeted a eulogy for the convicted terrorist Isabel Rosado Morales, calling her "our icon and national patri-

ot." Morales had been imprisoned three times for seditious acts, the final time in 1954, for her involvement in a plot that culminated in an attack on Congress by four Puerto Rican nationalists. Firing from the House gallery, they shot and wounded five U.S. congressmen. Morales was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the assassination attempt. This unseemly support for violent terrorists from a top city official, second only to the mayor, begs the question posed
by Joseph Connor whose father, Frank, was killed in the lunchtime FALN bombing of Fraunces Tavern on Wall Street back in 1975 - “What kind of low-life politician sides with terrorists over the very citizenry she is sworn to defend?” Speaker Mark-Viverito will have to depart the City Council in 2017 due to term limits. All I can add to that is...thank God for term limits! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

RBB Intersection at B. 73rd St. — A Pedestrian Death Sentence? By Kami-Leigh Agard
“Hazardous!” — “NASCAR Speedway!” — “Dangerous!” This is how local residents described their sentiments about the dangerous intersection of Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard (RBB), going west from the corner where the YMCA is located. “This intersection is very dangerous for all neighboring residents, especially for folks going to the YMCA. Also students who live in the area, board and exit the school buses here,” Edwin Williams, president of Arverne By The Sea’s (ABTS) Palmers Landing Homeowners Association, said. “Further down RBB, heading west, is P.S. 183 on Beach 79th Street, where fortunately there are crossing guards on Beach 77th and Beach 79th to ensure students’ safety. However, we desperately need something
done on Beach 73rd Street. It’s like a NASCAR speedway, with cars exceeding the 25 mph limit, once they cross the intersection,” Williams said. Williams said that he and other ABTS residents have been communicating their concerns to the Department of Transportation (DOT) for 10 years, and are still waiting for something to be done. “The DOT declined our initial request for an additional traffic light at Beach 77th Street. We then asked for a median to clearly designate that from Beach 73rd westward, there is only one lane going east and west. We also asked for a crosswalk and speed cameras. They declined our requests and said that they would paint divider lines, which in my opinion, will not work because the cars will go over them. Are they going to wait for a life to be lost before some action takes place?” Williams asked.
Remembering Z-Man Through Football This weekend, the late Justin Zemser, a former Channel View School for Research (CVSR) student and a Navy Midshipman, will be remembered through football. The 2nd Annual Z-Man Memorial Football Tournament is Saturday, June 3. Starting at noon, several teams will face off in a friendly game of flag football, to celebrate the sport that Zemser loved. Many loved Zemser and he loved CVSR. After graduating, he came back to speak with the students often, encouraged them to work hard, pursue their dreams, and live their lives to the fullest. He also loved football. Zemser was killed in the Amtrak derailment in May 2015. To honor his life, CVSR started this annual fundraising football tournament in 2016. All proceeds from the event go
toward the CVSR Justin Zemser Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded to a high school senior who most exemplifies the spirit that Zemser embodied. This event is open to all CVSR students, alumni and community members. The event will also include a DJ, a Dance Team performance, a memorial rock painting stand, face painting, a 50/50, a raffle and donation booth. Admission is $2. T-shirts will also be on sale. The Rockaway Times (RT) reached out to the DOT to find out if and when they will address this problem. The DOT spokesperson responded, “There is a planned capital project for RBB between Beach 88th and Beach 73rd Streets. The project, in conjunction with Department of Design & Construction’s water main work, will add pedestrian refuge islands at feasible locations, extend sidewalks to create a standard roadway width, and add left turn bays at different locations for safe vehicular movement.” The DOT did not say when this will take place. Williams said that they also begged for police to monitor the speeding cars. “We’ve been receiving police enforcement sparingly, but more is needed when the kids are going to school between the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and getting out between 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. We see some police after the kids are already in school, which really doesn’t help us as concerned parents,” Williams said. ABTS resident and father of a St. Rose of Lima student, Jose Rodriguez said, “There’s definitely a safety issue with cars speeding, trying to beat the light at Beach 73rd Street. RBB from Beach 73rd, headed westbound, suddenly changes from two lanes to one lane, which many drivers don’t acknowledge. When drivers try to merge into one lane, coming
across the intersection in front the YMCA, it’s a hazardous condition for everyone. “When pedestrians try to cross from the bus stop in front the YMCA, it’s almost like they are taking their lives in their own hands. Knowing that the lane has changed from two lanes to one lane, cars are trying to squeeze by each other by passing on the right side. Also, the next traffic light is at Beach 79th Street, which forces folks to cross in between, again, risking their lives. “There should be some sort of speed control like a crosswalk, median or speeding cameras. There aren’t any crossing guards, so parents assume that role. I would like to see some law enforcement show us that they are watching.” When RT reached out to the NYPD, their response was succinctly, “The Commanding Officer is aware and addressing.” Williams said, “I have young children, and this is why I am fighting for their safety and secured future. I have been fighting for this before they were even born. How long will it take for DOT to fix this by putting traffic safety measures in place for concerned residents? In the next school year, a new Charter School is opening on Beach 67th Street, bringing more children commuting to school in our area. What is the DOT waiting for? A child knocked down by a car? That’s reactive, DOT needs to be proactive!”

Treasure The Moments I loved the quote mentioned in the celebration mass for Msgr. Bracken at St. Francis de Sales this past Sunday: “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans.” So often we are derailed or upset by a personal situation that changes our plans. It can make you feel discombobulated to say the least. Your life has suddenly changed course and it wasn’t in the plan. I learned at the young age of 24 that anything could happen, and when and if it does, there is nothing
you can do, but deal with it the best you can. Sometimes these painful experiences turn around to be life lessons and you learn to dance and sing every day. You take the negative and turn it into a positive. How many times have you heard, “I can’t believe it has been that many years already?” Where has the time gone? Well, life was happening and perhaps you were so busy making plans you didn’t get to be in the moment of life itself. Waking up and being
grateful for this day and life is a wonderful mantra to live by. We do not know what tomorrow brings but we know we have this moment. Spending time with loved ones is a gift. My life has shown me painful times of loss and sickness but I knew time was of the essence and to just be in that moment. I never would have fully embraced this without the experience of losing a loved one. It taught me nothing is permanent and we have a short time together, so just enjoy and go with the flow. Be light-hearted and don’t take anything personal. Find your truth and live by it. Let go of judgement and be kind to one another. Stay close to the ones you love, we are not here forever. Treasure the moments. Plans must be made, but remember, no guarantees. It’s ok when life changes your plans. Accept that this is life and resist the urge to fight it. It will only cause you heartache. Going with the flow is a rare quality in most human
Page 37 beings. We are programmed to make plans and stick to them. We all know the saying, “The only thing that is constant is change. To live in the present means to not resist life’s experiences, even the painful ones. Perhaps the pain of letting go could be the real teacher. We are human and we will always feel many emotions in life. Allow your emotions to surface but don’t get attached to them. As we become aware of the present moment and the willingness to experience life without the judgement of the mind, our fears will disappear. The ego will drop away and we will be in a good space. As you surrender and let go, you become the dance. Life happens and we don’t always have the answers, and may feel uprooted when our plans change, but try to believe in a higher source and go with the flow. Life is happening right now as you read this column. May you be free from suffering and live a life surrounded by love and joy.

Memorial Day Parade Marches On On Monday, May 29, Rockaway held its annual Memorial Day Parade. The weather wasn’t ideal, but many still turned out to watch and participate in this event that honors the fallen military members who fought to keep this country free. The event began with a Mass at St. Francis de Sales and then the parade marched down Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Among the marchers were local veterans, the Knights of Columbus, the Channel View Marching Band, Scholars’ Academy, the Ancient Order
of Hibernians, the U.S. Naval Academy, NYPD and more. The marchers first stopped at Memorial Circle near Beach 120th Street. There, 95-yearold WWII Navy veteran Larry Eichen, read the names of the local military members who were lost, and led a Jewish prayer. Taps were played before wreaths were placed at the memorial. The parade then proceeded to Beach 95th Street, where another wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Doughboy Monument. Photos by Katie McFadden.

The BLVD Project was off to a bright start last weekend as about a dozen artists took to the construction fence walls of the future Rockaway Beach Hotel on Beach 108th and 109th Street. As first reported in The Rockaway Times last week, the BLVD project is a collection of murals painted by local artists and those from around the world, to give Rockaway Beach Boulevard and the surrounding area a boost as In
Good Company Hospitality awaits the permits to continue construction on the hotel to come. The project is also being done so ferry riders have something fun to arrive to when they disembark at Beach 108th Street. From painted mermaids to seagulls to whales and more, the boulevard is looking brighter than ever. The project began last Saturday, May 27. Those checking out the art were also treated to the opening of Rockapulco, a temporary beer garden and food truck bonanza inside the construction fencing. Many enjoyed beer, yard games and goodies from the Dalton’s Shore Shack truck. The BLVD Project will be on display throughout the summer and Rockapulco will be open on weekends. Look out for more food trucks, more art and more activities throughout the season.

Shore Front Art-Way By Katie McFadden
Shore Front Parkway has been sculpted. 14 Sculptors is here and ready to kick off a summer of fun, education and art with a series of programming. The new outdoor sculpture exhibit, featuring 17 sculptures by 16 artists and 15 different sites along Shore Front Parkway, is officially ready to open on Saturday. You’ve probably been some of the works like a recycled mermaid, a chain-link heart, jumping whales and seahorses and more, take over the area between the boardwalk and the street, from Beach 74th to Beach 108th. Now all 17 sculptures of the 14 Sculptors on the Rock exhibit have been installed and the official opening is this weekend. Esther Grillo and Christina Jorge wanted to bring 14 Sculptors to Rockaway to promote art and the beauty of Rockaway.
The opening celebration is planned for Saturday, June 3, starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Beach 94th Street Plaza. The opening event will feature fun activities from the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Rockaway Theatre Company, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance, Sorrentino Recreation Center, a performance by Stan’s Pepper Steppers and much more. You can also check out all of the artworks after the opening, and all summer. A full calendar of events will take place coinciding with the exhibit and will be available at www.14sculptors. com. Why is chipping so darn hard? I mean all you do is set up and rock your shoulders, right? If only it were that easy. For some reason this little stroke is so hard for people to execute. Here is the secret: The key lies in the set up! If set up properly, it is much easier to pop the ball up onto the green. The trick is to put yourself into a position to hit DOWN on the ball. Most golfers try to scoop the ball into the air, thereby skulling or chunking it. If you want the ball to get up into the air, you have to visualize pinching it between the ground and the club. If the ball
THURSDAY, JUNE 1, 2017 is hit first and then pinched into the ground, it will roll back up the face of the club and into the air. The set up is crucial 1. Put your feet very close together 2. Place the ball back in your stance 3. Place 70 percent of your weight on your front foot 4. Forward press your hands so that they are in front of the ball. Now rock your shoulders back and through with no wrist movement and no weight transfer. Your weight should remain on your front foot throughout the stroke. Read carefully, when you return the club back to the ball, your hands must be in front of the ball at impact. You will hit down on the ball because your weight is forward and your hands are in front of the ball. Don’t release the club, otherwise you will scoop it and skull it. As with everything, this takes practice at a practice facility. You need to repeat it over and

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Hate Autism? — Dare to Tell the Truth? Is it okay to throw shame on those parents and caregivers who say that they HATE their loved one’s autism? As a parent of an eightyear-old on the autism spectrum, I am constantly on the prowl, hungrily devouring everything I could find on autism spectrum disorder, whether it is the latest research findings, miracle diets, vitamins, recreational activities — but my absolute favorites are parent blogs. Admittedly, it’s an addiction. So when I came across this BBC News article, “I have dark thoughts about my children's autism,” like a deer caught in headlights, I was literally stopped in my tracks and trepidatiously read on. One of the parents in the article, dubiously referred to as Christine, is a single mom to three children on the spectrum. She stated, “I get riled when people say well-meaning things like, 'You must be a really strong person because you wouldn't be given more than what you can deal with.’ This just doesn't feel like a reward, actually. I often feel there's not really space in the autism world for a mother to say 'I really wish this wasn't happening, I don't feel blessed, I don't feel strong, I don't feel like it's all happening for a reason.” Hmmm. Should this mom, (who weirdly enough works as a psychiatric nurse), be
shamed because well, she is being brutally honest? There are countless social media posts from parents who post the hell they endure on a given day with their child on the spectrum, juxtaposed with incredulous gratitude. For example, one parent who referred to her son as “Lovable Danger Dan,” wrote: “Well, today was extremely challenging, but we are so grateful for our beautiful boy. Danger Dan literally drove me crazy with his tantrums when I told him he couldn’t take his suitcase of Legos to school, cussed his teachers out like a drunken sailor, kicked a boy in the head on the school bus, tore a chunk of my hair out, sucked on ketchup packets all day, got me in a panic at Home Depot, where the entire staff tried to coax him to come down from a mile-high shelf he craftily climbed up, refuses to bathe after a whole week — BUT we are so blessed to have this amazing child.” Pardon me for asking, but is she just full of bull or canonized as a saint? Makes one think. I adore my daughter, YES — she is a handful. YES — all of our lives have drastically changed in the last eight years. YES — I worry about her future. YES — sometimes I want to run for the hills when I don’t know what to do. YES —I want to wave this magic wand to make this crapshoot

Maybe she is some kind of savant.” Well today, she is eight, does not talk, read or play outside with the neighborhood children. However, you know what? Honestly, I do sometimes get really angry and resentful at autism. Do I hate it? Oftentimes, yes. However, I see my daughter, Soanirina’s incredible agility, athleticism, beauty, cunningness, and let’s not talk about how her toothy smile and giggles melt our hearts. On Saturday, May 27, 12-year-old Alexa Giambra (with the help of her brother Joseph and friend Katrina), stood in front of Mr. Giuseppe's barber shop on Beach 129th Street to sell goodies (all made by Alexa herself the day before), with all proceeds donated to St.
Jude's. “Alexa decided to partake in this great endeavor about a month ago, since it is a cause she is very passionate about, and we are so very proud of her! She raised approximately $700 for St. Jude Children's Hospital!” Alexa’s mother, Michelle Giambra said.

Jamaica Bay Softball BACK THIS SUNDAY! By The Commissioner
Welcome back to another year of Jamaica Bay Softball! We hope everyone is ready for what should be our best season yet. Quick congrats goes out to Morning Wood for winning the championship last year. We might see a new champion this year. In the off-season, the captains got together and voted to expand the league. With that being said, we would like to welcome the Kings, The Army, and Member Berries. For the first time since the league has been back, we will now be split into two divisions (EAST/ WEST). If anyone is looking to play, stop by the field this Sunday (West 20th road). Here’s a look at what we have in store to open up the season. 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Morning Wood vs Knights of Columbus (KOC) ***GAME OF THE WEEK*** - KOC was the only team to take down Morning Wood last season and finished 3rd in their first year in the league but came up short in
the playoffs. MW is 44-6 over the last three seasons and is looking to play in their 6th Championship in a row. PREDICTION: Morning Wood Sweep. 9:30 a.m. Field 2, Moneyballs vs Mudsharks - This is a big West Division matchup with both teams favored to make the playoffs. The Moneyballs started out strong last season going 7-2, but fell off the end of the year finishing 1-7-1. They have a couple new faces to take on the old Mudsharks team who lost a few players. Will the Sharks still find a way to win the West? PREDICTION: Mudsharks Sweep. 9:30 a.m. Field 3, Orioles vs Member Berries - The Orioles are coming off their worst season in recent years winning their only game by a rainout. Not sure if Frank is in or out as manager, but moves were made to “Make The Franchise Great Again.” O’s don't care about the title and are just looking to finally beat the Mudsharks. Member

Berries are new to the league, but with that name we’re not sure to take them as a joke or if this team is serious. Only time will tell. PREDICTION: Orioles Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 1, No-Shows vs Chuggernauts - Chuggernauts posted their highest win total ever last season, but five wins isn't gonna get you the trophy. No-Shows made it to the Semis last season after starting 1-8 then winning their next six out seven games to sneak into the final spot of the playoffs. If they can actually show, this team could be in the top spot of the West. PREDICTION: No-Shows Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 2, Old Head vs Misfits - Old Head made it to the semis last year but lost a few players to different teams. Misfits lost some players to different teams as well. Both these teams are playing in the East Division and this could be a key series on deciding who is in or out for the playoffs at the end of the season. PREDICTION: Split.
11:30 a.m. Field 3, The Army vs Kings - For months we have been hearing that The Army is coming. Not sure what that means but we've also heard the Kings all over Facebook. These are two new teams in the league but not new faces as each team was built with players who have been in the league for years. One team is all young kids and the other are old timers but both have the same goal and that’s to win the Championship. PREDICTION: Kings Sweep. The league is running a 50/50 raffle.
