Seals Need Social Distance Too By Katie McFadden
When it comes to seals, social distancing is best. Following a viral video from Belle Harbor of unleashed dogs chasing a seal back into the ocean, representatives from the NY Marine Rescue Center, the only seal rehab facility in New York State, reached out to The Rockaway Times to provide readers with some reminders of the best course of action to take when a seal comes to visit. In a video sent to the RT on Monday morning, at least three curious dogs were seen approaching a young grey seal that had come up onto the sand to relax. A man is seen trying to get two of the dogs away from the mammal, which attempted to bite back at the dogs. Another dog was unrestrained as it followed the seal as it made its way back into the water. Someone in the background can be heard saying “yay” as the seal enters the ocean.
After seeing the video, Maxine Montello, rescue program director at the NYMRC, contacted the RT to provide some tips for those who may not be aware of seal behavior and how to interact with these mammals that are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). “There are a lot of seals in Rockaway and it’s perfectly normal for them to haul out solo,” Montello said. Under the federal MMPA, people are required to stay at least 150 feet away from seals. “If you locate a seal on the beach, practice social distancing from these guys and give them their space so we don’t add any more
stress. This also goes for dogs. Seals can carry a lot of different diseases, as can dogs, and we want to make sure we don’t cross contaminate any diseases.” Montello explained a misconception that some may have that seals need to be in groups. “At this age, they’re about three months to two years and they live a solo lifestyle. They’re solitary and are just looking for a space to haul out where it is safe for them to be alone on the beach, rather than with older males who may hurt them. Everybody’s first concern is that if they’re by themselves, are they ok? They are not in need of their mom at this point and they can haul out for several days on the beach,” Montello said. She noted that seals get their water from their food source, so they do not need water to be poured on them or to be urged back into the water as they are mammals that can breathe on
land. If a seal is in the “banana position,” a pose where they can lift their head and tail and their body forms the shape of a banana, this is normal behavior. If a seal is seen vocalizing, opening their mouth or scratching their faces, these are also normal behaviors, but serve as a warning sign to predators who may be too close. Those who violate the MMPA by harassing or attempting to feed a seal, may be subject to a large fine. Montello says the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation has developed signage to help educate the public about seals, which they hope to put around the Rockaway peninsula in the near future. Those who encounter a seal are encouraged to call the NY Marine Rescue Center’s hotline at 631-369-9829 to report its location and condition. To support the rescue and rehab efforts of the NYMRC, donations can be made at NYMarineRescue.org.

Where We Are
BOYLEING POINTS
Looters and rioters should be arrested and prosecuted. They’re criminals and we need police to stop them. Period. Too bad that’s gotta be said. These days, you say anything and you can sense you’re being sized-up. Sometimes peoples’ eyes narrow and it’s clear they’re trying to figure out what “sideâ€? you’re on. If you are in support of protests, you shouldn’t have to offer a preamble. You shouldn’t have to say that looting is criminal. You shouldn’t have to say upfront that you do not support anarchy or spitting on cops. But that’s where we are. It’s too bad we can’t compartmentalize. It’s too bad we can’t listen without responding with “what about‌â€? Whataboutism might be the most dangerous ism there is. A hundred years ago, women
were given the right to vote. You know what that means? People were actually in opposition. Women had to fight for the right. People against, made actual arguments why women shouldn’t vote. It was debated back and forth for decades. Decades. A doctor of some renown had big sway when he said voting and politics takes thought and if women exerted themselves with too much thinking, they might become infertile. Another school of thought said married women would just follow their husbands and therefore it would be like giving a married man two votes. Decades, this went on for. Look it up. There was a protest march by women in favor of voting rights in 1913 in Washington. At some point, men broke through barriers and pushed, shoved, injured and spat on the women. More than a hundred had to go to the emergency room. Cops could do little to control the crowd. One account says a cop told the marchers, “You shoul-
da stayed home.� Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. Maybe the women said mean things. But there was a riot. Over what? Over allowing women the right to vote. It was seven more years before they could legally enter a voting booth. Looking back makes you say, how could it be like that? While trying to make sense of things, I’m wondering how we’re gonna look back. “Bad apples� is something we’re hearing a lot about. Someone offered me an analogy and it seems apt. During the Catholic clergy abuse scandal, predatory priests were protected and shielded by some church leaders. The wicked behavior was allowed to continue, sometimes by moving the bad apples to different places and parishes. A culture was in place that permitted this. But no longer. It’s better now. Similarly, bad cops are protected and shielded by union leaders, top brass, and fellow officers afraid of recriminations if they expose corrupt or abusive cops. The culture allows bad behav-
ior to continue. It’s not as simple as “bad apples.� It’s more about dealing with, and getting rid, of these bad apples. The culture’s gotta change. I have to pause to salute one of our Be Well columnists, Helen Kilgallen, who wrote a tough, difficult piece this week. She comes from an NYPD family, full of integrity, and you can tell she’s full of anguish. She stated a simple truth: good cops don’t like bad cops. So, what can be done? At the height of the clergy scandal, a lot of good was still being done by the church. But evil still had to be rooted out. As brutal as some cops have shown to be, the overwhelming evidence is that cops care, show remarkable restraint, and have very dangerous jobs. And we damn well need them. But if changes aren’t made, good cops will have to carry an unfair, dangerous burden. And protests will continue. And those who come after us will rightly ask, how could it be like that?

What do you need from us?’ He said, ‘I’ll have a few cops posted next to you and I’ll put some boats out in the water in case someone is in distress.’ I was blown away. Just remember folks, not all police officers are bad!” A second paddle out will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 9 a.m. on Beach 109th Street. “Let’s make this a big one,” Harris said.

The June 22 date is not definite because if Covid-19 numbers spike, the Mayor can push back the date. ***** Both houses of the New York State Legislature have passed a bill to repeal New York Civil Rights Law section 50-A, which has shielded police disciplinary records from the public. It requires law enforcement agencies to turn over the disciplinary records of police officers when they are requested under the state's Freedom of Information Law. The bill passed along party lines in the Senate, 40-22. The Assembly approved the measure 101-43 Tuesday evening, also along party lines. Governor Cuomo has said he will sign the bill into law. On Monday, the Rockaway Youth Task Force had held a teachin about the law in front of Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s office.

THOR Unites the Peninsula for George Floyd Vigil By Katie McFadden
The Heart of Rockaway (THOR) brought both ends of the peninsula together for a peaceful prayer vigil to remember George Floyd. On Thursday, June 4, the same day for the nationwide memorial for George Floyd, civic association, THOR, brought the community together to pay its respects on the Beach 73rd boardwalk. Lisa George, a candidate for Assembly District 31 and president of THOR, began the event by laying out the mission. “We’re here for unity. THOR, as we are mothers and dads and we are feeling everything the community is feeling, we wanted to find some peace and solidarity and we want to do that with prayer and in memory of George Floyd,” she said. “The actions we have seen, the injustice we have seen, we need to call for an end to it. We do not want to have police brutality in our community. I have members of my family who are police officers. We are not saying
all cops are bad. But we do want those that are not honoring that badge, that they’re going to be held accountable for the actions that they do against people of color because it’s been going on for far too long and it’s time for it to come to an end.” THOR’s first vice president, Edwin Williams, spoke of his fears for his black children. “Today we’re going to pay our respects to the Floyd family. What happened to him, should not happen to anyone else. I’m a father of two young men, 8 years old and 12, and I should not have to worry if they go to the store or if
they’re in school, if they’re gonna come home alive. We’re sick of it and that’s why everyone is out here, all shades,” he said. Local black youth were given the opportunity to speak. Among them were Williams’ sons. “I really got annoyed because of all this killing, racism, it really annoyed me and I want it all to end,” Christian Williams said. A student from Scholars’ Academy spoke about the hope for change in her own school. “I’m tired of feeling like I have to educate my peers because I feel like my school, which is
a diverse school should be educating my peers for me. We should be having these conversations and it should not be left on the shoulders of students of color to have these conversations for them,” she said. Clergy members led the group in prayer and officials such as Senator James Sanders, Queens Borough President Sharon Lee and Queens Borough President candidate Liz Crowley spoke of their support for the movement. The vigil ended with a moment of silence, in which everyone in attendance got on their knee to honor George Floyd.

Graduation Caps, Sweatshirts Too By Marina Cregan
A graduation tradition lives on. On Monday, June 8, the graduating class of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Academy posed outside of school to take a special photo. One might wonder why this photo was so special. Well, it depicts all 21 socially-distanced eighth graders adorning their St. Rose of Lima Class of 2020 sweatshirts. The distribution of graduation sweatshirts has been an eighth grade tradition at St. Rose for years. However, due to COVID-19, many traditions were replaced with a virtual reality that left some students and parents disheartened. This year, the eighth graders were plagued with disappointment. Their graduation Mass and commencement ceremonies are both scheduled to be virtual. As of two weeks ago,
it appeared that the students were about to have yet another disappointment. The sweatshirts were not ordered. Upon hearing this news, 1st Vice President of The Heart of Rockaway (THOR), a civic association based in Arverne by the Sea, Edwin Williams, decided that something needed to be done to put a smile on the students’ faces. Williams’ neighbor, Jose Rodriguez, expressed how disappointed he was when he found out that his daughter, Angelina, would not be receiving this special graduation souvenir. As a community leader representing THOR, Williams knew there must be something he could do to help. “Not only was their senior year cut short, but I was trying to figure out a way to put a smile on their faces,” Williams said. So, Williams reached out to
Gerry Romski, CEO of Arverne by the Sea, who Williams has counted on in the past. “Gerry always comes through for the kids in Rockaway. Gerry just wanted to help us put a smile on the faces of the St. Rose of Lima Seniors. 2020 has not been a good year, and it looked like the students would not even get senior class sweatshirts. I could not let that happen. So, maybe now, these students will have one bright day to remember through all

On Monday, June 8, the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy graduating class received some special recognition as they picked up their caps and gowns. The school hosted a drive-by celebration for students and their families. Teachers, SFDS priests and other faculty members lined up in the school yard as families entered in decorated cars, honoring their graduates. Rockaway Mutual Aid Network Lets Neighbors Help Neighbors By Katie McFadden
In tough times, Rockaway has proven time and time again that the community comes together to help each other. As coronavirus became yet another big challenge, the Rockaway Mutual Aid & Support Network was founded, becoming another way for neighbors to rise to the challenge of helping neighbors. As coronavirus started to hit Rockaway, lifelong Rockaway resident Jennifer Krol knew her community was going to need help. As a substitute teacher now out of work and feeling helpless, she decided to dedicate her time by building a network for Rockaway residents to help one another through the crisis. She started the Rockaway Mutual Aid & Support Network as a Facebook group in midMarch and the effort has grown into a big success. “I knew that after that first coronavirus case was confirmed in Rockaway, that our community was going to need

In Rockaway alone, in addition to other residents who would get exposed to Covid-19, we have 12 adult facilities, 16 nursing homes, a huge concentration of public housing, and one hospital. As the number of cases increased, I knew there was a need for services like groceries and medication, emotional support, assistance with unemployment, and
I kept thinking of those individuals who were unable to leave their homes and get the essentials they need,” Krol said. Never having done something like this before, Krol began to look into other mutual aid groups in which locals help locals across the city. “What mutual aid groups are, are a community of volunteers who organize to meet their own needs outside of the formal framework of a charity or not-for-profit. It’s about people coming together to support and look out for one another in a way that creates solidarity,” she said. “I felt like having one in Rockaway could be essential. I didn’t want to sit back and not do anything about it.” The Rockaway Mutual Aid & Support Network is made up of volunteers who offer services to help those struggling during the coronavirus crisis by picking up and dropping off groceries and prescriptions, supporting access to essential supplies, giving a friend-

We’re connecting community members to resources that they didn’t know were available to them like WIC and SNAP and things that I don’t think people on the peninsula are aware of, and it’s just as important as food and supply deliveries,” she said. As we go to press, Krol says the Facebook group of 260 members, includes 60 active volunteers and a core group of 10 dispatchers who handle the network’s phone line, which was established in mid-April. Since that phone line was established, the network has assisted more than 160 families with their needs, and that doesn’t include those who were helped by reaching out through the Facebook group. help, they’re going to want to help. It doesn’t matter what part of the peninsula you live on, people are going to help out neighbors, which is really beautiful and makes me love the Rockaways even more.” The Mutual Aid group works with other local organizations to bring people what they need. For example, the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula has helped provide grocery pickups from food pantries and referrals for services.
The Rockaway Food Initiative based in the Rockaway Brewing Company has also helped provide groceries for those in need. The Rockaway Head Start program has connected them with people in need of baby supplies like diapers and formula and has helped provide translation services for those who don’t speak English, so they can have access to services. As the movement grows, the Rockaway Mutual Aid Network is always searching for more help. Many of the volunteers pick up essentials and deliver them to the homes of those who can’t get them. The group is open to more people joining to help make the effort more widespread. “It’s important for people in the community to know that there are multiple ways to help and be involved, whether it’s making grocery and delivery runs, or speaking another language and providing translation services, or being connected to social services, or even phone dispatching,” Krol said. They have also started an online fundraiser for the effort to
Page 21 help volunteers that are paying out-of-pocket for essential items and food that they bring to those in need. “We’re hoping to raise funds to reimburse our volunteers. With the fundraiser, we can reimburse the volunteer for up to $100 that they spend per family,” Paradis said. As we go to press, the group has raised nearly $3,700. BOARDWALK BEAUTIES! FANTASTIC PHOTOS ADORN THE BOARDWALK By Sean Boyle
It’s often said that pictures are worth a thousand words. The Rockaway Times received nearly a thousand submissions for the 2020 Photo Contest, that’s a lot of metaphorical words and a lot of brilliant moments captured on film on the peninsula. The annual contest accepts submissions through March and April and then judges have the tough task of deciding on a Top 30. There were eight judges with reps from the sponsors:
Jamaica Bay – Rockaway Parks Conservancy, NYC Parks, NYC Ferry, The Rockaway Times and contest founder, John Cori. Once the Top 30 are selected, they are sent to Duggal Visual Solutions to be enlarged and made poster-sized and ready for public display. Carpenters from the NYC Parks Department affix the photos to the boardwalk and the Photo Expo goes live. The photos can be viewed on display on the oceanside boardwalk railing from Beach 93rd Street to Beach 95th Street. For the first time, the photos are in one section of the boardwalk, though each one is separated by at least six feet, allowing for social distance. In previous years, the photos were in groups of five or six and spread from Beach 98 to Beach 19th Streets. This year’s presentation allows the public to view all at once.
And there’s more. Five honorable mention photos have been placed along the railing at the ferry dock on Beach 108th Street. Before boarding the ferry, people can enjoy and admire the photos here. The top prize is $500 and a cover feature on the weekly Rockaway Times. The winner and runners-up will be announced later in the summer.

Hearing loss is one of the most prevalent and undertreated disabilities worldwide. In the past it was simply considered one of the stigmata of aging, however, more recently, it has been increasingly recognized as an important health issue that may lead to increased risks of social isolation (not COVID-19 related), depression, loss of autonomy, reduced employability, and neurocognitive dysfunction, not to mention concern over personal safety. In view of this, there is a growing emphasis on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of hearing loss. Although hearing aids suffice for many persons with hearing loss, a subset of the population with greater hearing loss may benefit from cochlear implantation, a relatively low-risk procedure that generally leads to improvements in speech understanding and quality of life. Yet it is esti-

Now Hear This! mated that only 10% of adults in the U.S. and other developed countries who meet the criteria for cochlear implantation actually receive it. At least 1.2 million adults in the U.S. and 50 million worldwide are living with severe to profound hearing loss – a level of impairment that is not sufficiently corrected with hearing aids – and might benefit from cochlear implantation. The prevalence of hearing loss increases with age, and about 2/3 of people 70 and older have some degree of hearing loss. Also, that prevalence is likely to rise because, in the next 30 years, the proportion of the population 70 and over is likely to double. Here in the U.S., the most common causes of hearing loss in adults is recreational or occupational noise exposure, hereditary factors, and exposure to ototoxic medications (i.e. aminoglycoside antibiotics given intravenously in a hospital setting). The most common anatomical reason for hearing loss is damaged or missing hair cells

located in the cochlea, which is found in the inner ear. The cochlea is an amazing, yet tiny and very sensitive organ. It is shaped like a snail’s shell and, by using the hair cells, it converts acoustic energy, or sound, into electrical signals which the brain interprets as sound, very similar to the retina in the eye which converts visual images into electrical signals which the brain interprets as vision. Currently, there are no FDA-approved medications or surgical treatments that reverse hearing loss and restore normal hearing. While hearing aids may help allow a person to function reasonably well in a quiet environment, their use is limited in those with more severe hearing loss, especially if there is significant background noise. Hearing aids function by amplifying sound and, to work, they need to have functioning hair cells in the cochlea. Cochlear implants bypass nonfunctioning or missing hair cells and directly stimulate surviving spiral ganglion cells
of the cochlear nerve, enhancing both audibility and speech recognition. A cochlear implant uses an external microphone, worn behind the ear like a hearing aid, to transmit a signal to an external transmitter. This transmitter overlies an implanted receiver-stimulator. An electrode runs from the implanted receiver-stimulator, through the mastoid bone (the hard, bony plate directly behind the ear), and terminates inside the cochlea. Implantation takes less than two hours and blood loss is minimal plus it is often done at outpatient surgi-centers. There is a common misconception that the criteria for a cochlear implant is profound hearing loss. That is no longer the case as FDA labeling and rules have changed. the world as I am sure is your prayer. This column is not an easy one to write during these difficult times. Honestly, for the past three days I have written and deleted this column. My intention is to reach everyone but that is impossible. We are all made up of our own opinions and conditions. I, for one, come from an NPYD family who held the law in the highest regard. Two brothers and one sister gave a life of service. They were among the really good police officers who did the right thing and made

sure the law was followed. They witnessed the worst in life and the best. They gave their blood, sweat and tears to this city. It was a path they chose and wore the badge with integrity and dignity, as did so many of their collegues. I am appalled at how they are all being treated in NYC and over the world. There is so much violence and disrespect for the people who put their lives on the line every day. You do not walk in their shoes and you are killing the spirits of this Police Force. The good cops don’t like the bad cops. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King Jr. We are good people who need to be the voice of reason to help make changes in a lawful way without causing more suffering. There is already so much darkness in the world, let’s be the light for change. We can do this in a peaceful way without taking down our brothers and sisters. I already
see people from all different backgrounds being more respectful and kind to one another. There will always be ignorance in society and we can do our part to raise the vibration where all men and women are treated with respect. The world needs our love and compassion. Be kind to one other and serve the world with good intentions. There can be profound changes when things are done in a non-violent way. I pray for a world that greets one another with Namaste. The Divine Light in me sees the Divine Light in you. We are all one. Protect us from negativity and promote positive change. Breathe into this new life.

March With Us Sparks a Movement They marched towards a movement. On Saturday, June 6, FarRockNPHC and Queens Defenders collaborated for an historic “March With Us” event for the Far Rockaway community. Roughly 500 people joined to march in solidarity against police brutality and racial injustice. This powerful and peaceful movement began on the boardwalk on Beach 59th Street and continued to Beach 32nd Street. Among those who joined

Wrestle Talk TALKING ABOUT PROMOTIONS By Eric Jayden
Welcome to another edition of "WrestleTalk." I hope everybody has been keeping safe. Let's dive into the World of Wrestling. This week we cover the WWE NXT TV Show coming from Full Sail University in Winter Park Florida on June 3, 2020. weight Championship in the Main Event. This week I received a lot of emails regarding questions about Independent Wrestling Promotions and how trained pro wrestlers work in this very tough business. Thank you to Allen H. from Belle Harbor and Chase M. from Howard Beach for their questions and emails. Independent wrestling promotions are the breeding grounds of future superstars. You can find independent promotions throughout the world with some drawing 50 to 1000 fans per show. A life of an Independent Wrestler is a very tough with long hours, long drives to shows and many times for little to no pay. Independent wrestling offers no health care, no vacation and no sick days. A majority of injuries have to be covered by the wrestler himself. There’s also no retirement
plan. So, you asked yourself why do it??? For the majority of wrestlers, this is their starting platform where they can work their characters, hone their skills, all in an effort to get noticed and potentially get signed by bigger promotions. There are no guarantees you put your body through a lot of stress physically and mentally, all in an effort to fulfill a dream. For those that make it, it is a feeling like no other and for those that don't make it, some pursue other endeavors in pro wrestling and some just give up on their dreams. Like I said, it's a very tough business and to survive it requires extreme dedication and training. My advice to anyone entering professional wrestling is to have a back-up plan just in case you don't make it. Make sure you have other job skills and an education. If you do make it, my advice to you is to
be very frugal with your money. Make important Financial Decisions in order to have money when you retire from pro wrestling. Again, a career in pro wrestling is not guaranteed. There are many setbacks like injuries, unscrupulous promoters and a lot of competition. But if you work hard and stay dedicated then you can live your dream of being a Professional Wrestler.
