Yoga Fundraiser to Benefit Women Battling Cancer By Katie McFadden

Just across the Atlantic Ocean in Ocean Grove, NJ is Mary’s Place by the Sea (MPBTS), a home that has provided non-medical healing methods to female cancer patients. ing a healing event of her own to raise funds for a place that has helped local friends who have battled cancer. MPBTS was started in 2009 by Michele Gannon after she fell sick with a non-cancer-related ailment. “She was sick for months, while having to get up and take care of her kid and she started wondering how a person can get better if they have something really serious like cancer, while still having to take care of everyday life,” Melanie Knobel, who has been involved with MPBTS, said. Gannon, along with her yogi friend, Maria McKeon, joined forces to create a place where women undergoing cancer treatment could escape to, to heal without distractions. They first started bringing women to a four-bedroom bed and breakfast, but as word got out about MPBTS and the waiting list grew, they found a permanent 10-bedroom home at 22 Main Avenue in Ocean Grove last year. MPBTS doesn’t offer medical treatment, but supplemental

healing treatments and education, such as oncology massages, Reiki, meditation, nutrition education, counseling, expressive writing, and of course, yoga. The services are provided for free. Nearly 7,000 women have stayed at MPBTS since it began in 2009, including women from Rockaway, which is how Lev of Rockaway Love, found out about it, and she wanted to do something to help. “Anna is a mutual friend of someone who stayed with us, so she had heard about it. Another one of her friends got sick
with breast cancer and she felt kind of helpless, not being able to do something for her, but felt that doing something for Mary’s Place would be a good way to support her friend,” Knobel said. “Recently someone very close to me who is healthy and young got breast cancer. I couldn’t find a way to help her so I wanted to do something to help others who are fighting cancer. My friends were always talking about Mary’s Place and how great it was for them, so I wanted to continue to support their mission,” Lev said. On Saturday, June 17, at 11:30 a.m., Lev is opening up her Rockaway Love yoga studio (9016 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) for a yoga fundraiser for MPBTS. The class is open to anyone for a $30 donation. The line wound its way from the dock down Beach Channel Drive to the sewer treatment plant. Even with the second boat, hundreds were left waiting. It’s pretty clear we need BIGGER BOATS! We asked the ferry operators how they’ll address such crowds going forward and a spokesperson said: “NYC Ferry is a brand new system, and ridership has been extraordinary. More than 8,000 riders took NYC Ferry to the Rockaways on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend—far surpassing our record ridership of 6,000 on the three-day Memorial Day weekend. We’re making adjustments in real-time to meet the demand we’re seeing. We added a

third boat to the Rockaway run all weekend to meet high demand—and we’re looking at further, immediate enhancements we can make. Chartering vessels to meet demand is a standard part of ferry operations, and is something we will continue to utilize. As you may know, NYC Ferry currently has eight vessels in the water, with another 12 being built and expected to arrive over the coming year. We are able to charter or borrow vessels from local operators to accommodate the high demand until the rest of the NYC Ferry vessels are delivered and the system’s additional lines are activated, per NYC Ferry’s contract with the City.” The sentiment from travelers is clear: Keep chartering and keep borrowing. Day Of The Dad I had to look it up. Father’s Day has been celebrated since the 1500s. I figured it was a Hallmark invention or Macy’s gimmick so kids would buy more ties for dear old dad. But, little did I know, it was tied in with the Feast of Saint Joseph. Yeah, Joseph, Big Joe, the dad of dads. He’s the guy who by all accounts did a pretty decent job as a dad since he raised somebody named Jesus. Now there was a guy who could brag about his kid. But by all accounts he did no such thing. When other dads were boasting about how
their kid was going to be the best chariot racer or most awesome shepherd, Joseph was just hoping his kid would get in the carpenter’s union. And you know what else, he was probably hoping his kid would be a nice person and do unto to others. Imagine the conversations with other dads. Yo Joe, your kid can walk on water. He’s really made the big time. You must be so proud. I’m guessing Joseph would’ve just nodded and said he was most proud of his son being a good person.
That’s what I think dads should shoot for. That their kids turn out to be good people. You want to be a better golfer, you practice more. You want to get far in your career, you show up early and work hard and keep learning. You can usually measure your progress. You start hitting that golf ball straight and you start getting promotions on the job. But you want to be a better dad, what do you do? It’s certainly more art than science. There are manuals and howto books on all sorts of things. Including how to be a great dad. Ok, so you do the basics. Play catch with them. Read to them. Be good to their mom. Give them hugs. Spend your spare time with them. Some say the only thing kids want from their dads is time. Until they don’t want to spend time with their dads. Which happens. And should happen. See? It’s weird. You give your kids time and unconditional love and then they reject you. Sometimes in little ways, sometimes in big, explosive ways. They want to spread their wings. They want their independence. And you gotta let them go.
Page 5 But you can’t let them go so far they think you’ve abandoned them. It’s an art. What’s a good dad? It’s something we with kids want to be. But there’s no way to know for sure if you’ve managed it. Sometimes a father’s love means working 50 weeks a year and providing for the family, leaving precious little time for ball or dance recitals. Sometimes a father can’t express his love and just hopes his kids sense it. Sometimes it’s remembering kids have their own lives and you should butt out. I’ve heard it said that the best a father can do is provide things — advice, opportunity, setting example, etc. — so that his children can become better than him. That doesn’t mean the kids have to have more. It means you just want your kids to be better than you. More loving. More generous. More understanding. Better. It ain’t easy, dads. But it’s your most important job. That’s why there’s a day for you. So here’s to all who try. I bet Saint Joseph doesn’t mind sharing the day. Happy Father’s Day.

We can’t swear by it, but we believe he’s the youngest college head coach in the country (in any sport). ***** Do you have a human powered vehicle? That’s a fancy way of saying bike (though it could mean some other contraption). Well, whatever you ride, make a point of joining in the fun that is the Rockaway Bike Parade! It starts at 2 p.m. at the RISE Center (the old firehouse on Beach 59th Street) and winds its way under the Freeway and ends up at the Beach 97th concessions. There’ll be prizes and all sorts of fun. So two small fishing boats were drifting next to each other not far from the bay wall around Beach 112th Street or so on Saturday. Each boat had two men. But only one boat had two fully-clothed men. One guy was seen standing in all his glory, while the others paid him no attention and just carried on fishing. Note to nude dude: watch the hooks while fishing! We’re guessing some ferry riders turned the naked angler into an Instagram sensation. We were sent a photo but decided to spare you. ***** What a mess it was trying to get around last weekend when we experienced that suddenly summer weather. Cars were double parked on Shore Front and other streets, and the ferries brought additional crowds. Traffic lights were not in sync. Stupid left turn only lanes. Just a mess. And it really comes down to too many cars.
***** The crowds remind us: it’s a win-win. People love visiting here. And people from here love complaining. (But a lot of complaining is justified this time). A side note: the crowds were so big a number of restaurants ran out of food by Sunday! ***** Some travel savvy people left at the ferry dock because of overcrowding, hopped on the east shuttle to Beach 69th street for a subway ride home (with no transfer in Broad Channel necessary). ***** Good news! The beach season has been extended. Beaches/ pools will be open and staffed through September 10. ***** The old Playland Motel/Restaurant building is in contract. Rumors are condos. A couple of groups were vying for the spot. ***** The Wounded Warriors' weekend kicks off with the parade through Rockaway and Breezy Point on July 6 at around 6 p.m. The Warriors will enjoy a
Page 7 weekend full of activities in the days after. ***** The beach season has been extended! City pools and beaches, including Rockaway, will be open and staffed with lifeguards a week past Labor Day, through Sunday, September 10. ***** Here’s something for music fans. Lewis Del Mar, a rising band with an international following, profiled in The Rockaway Times last year, is doing a show in Rockaway this Friday at AB Studios on The Boulevard and Beach 112th Street. The Skells will be rocking it too. $5 admission. ***** The first after-hours (when lifeguards are off duty) rescue of the season occurred Monday when a woman in the water at approximately 7:40 p.m. had to be saved. Officer William Lauria, 23, of the 100th Precinct, jumped in the water to make the save. Another swimmer who had tried to help the woman had to be rescued as well. He was brought to safety by a surfer.

A Swell Tale About Rockaway

“These are the same guys who coach Little League and T-Ball, plan memorial paddle-outs, and head up programs to take wounded veterans jet-skiing, and that’s when they are not rushing into burning buildings, working second jobs in contracting, or donating bone marrow. They would never be less than impressive to Tim,” a passage describing just some of the Rockaway residents in Jill Eisenstadt’s newest fiction novel, Swell, reads. Those who have read Eisenstadt’s first work, From Rockaway, may recognize Tim. The story of the lifeguard in From Rockaway continues with the now retired firefighter in Swell, but there is also a whole new cast of characters in Eisenstadt’s new novel. However, the setting, Rockaway, remains the same, and readers will recognize many places and incidents that are mentioned. In June 1993, the Golden Venture, carrying nearly 300 Chinese im-
migrants ran aground off Fort Tilden and with that, the story of Swell begins. Before the time jump to a post-9/11 Rockaway, the first chapter is action-packed with an introduction of the book’s eccentric Italian senior, Rose Impoliteri and a murder cover-up. Fast forward nine years, and we start to learn about the Glassmans, a TriBeca family that takes up an offer to move away from Ground Zero to seek safety in a house by the sea. But the offer comes with a catch; Dan Glassman’s father, Sy, agrees to buy them the house, under the conditions that he gets to live with them, and Dan’s wife, Sue, must finally convert to Judaism.agree to the offer, but The Glassmans agree to the offer, but soon learn that their Belle Harbor home may not be as safe as they had hoped. Eisenstadt says Swell is “about our never ending desire to feel safe and how after 9/11, there’s a preoccupation with that in New York, and it shows the different ways people go about trying to feel that, even though,

most of the time it’s illusory. This family moves from Ground Zero to Rockaway, thinking they’ll be safer, but under this safety umbrella, you’re led to subjects like survivors' guilt, family, marriage and real estate, and assumptions and imaginary friends and all these other secrets in the book,” she said. This is the second time Eisenstadt has brought readers to Rockaway. Her first novel, From Rockaway, also takes place in the neighborhood with quite the cast of characters. Why the choice? Well, it’s a place Eisenstadt knows well. She grew up in Rockaway and stayed until her college years, but now lives in Brooklyn. However, her father still resides here. She also finds Rockaway to be a place of literary interest, as the neighborhood itself can be seen as a character. “I think of Rockaway as the most interesting character ever. It’s so beautiful and so scarred and unusual and so many things that an interesting character is. I’m fascinated with the place, the way you would

be with a person. Rockaway itself is a character,” Eisenstadt said. Twenty-six years had passed since From Rockaway was released, until the June 6 release of Swell, but Eisenstadt says she never stopped writing. In addition to raising three daughters, Eisenstadt says she wrote another novel that was never published, she wrote scripts with her sister, did talks, made a film and wrote other short pieces, both published and for personal notes. Eisenstadt says she tried to resist writing about Rockaway again, but she couldn’t keep away. “I thought I should be able to move on and write about other places, but I was obsessed with Rockaway,” Eisenstadt said. One of her short writings led her to the idea for Swell and bringing readers back to neighborhood. “In 2016, I was asked to contribute to an anthology, the Queens Noir. I immediately thought about the Golden Venture. Even though I wasn’t living in Rockaway at the time, I was always mesmerized with the way my parents described how police were checking for immigrants hiding around the neighborhood after that event, and that really interested me. After I wrote that, I knew I needed to keep going. I thought about all the other tragedies that have befallen Rockaway in history and my lifetime, like 9/11 and the plane crash. Rockaway seems a bit haunted and scarred. After 9/11, I was living in Brooklyn and all these people around me were moving and I always wondered if they wound up feeling safer where they moved. Many moved out west or upstate, but with everything
that happened in Rockaway, you wouldn’t move there for security, but the thought of that was funny to me, so I kept going with it. If you haven’t read it, Eisenstadt suggests doing so, as some of the same characters appear in both books. “Reading From Rockaway might make Swell even more fun because you get to see what happened to Timmy and Alex and Peg and all these other characters,” she said. The Rockaway setting in both books may be enough to draw in local readers. “Rockaway has been neglected in fiction for long enough. I think people will relate and hopefully they enjoy it,” she said. Flooding, Car Sharing & Firehouse Sites Discussed at CB14 By Katie McFadden The last Community Board 14 (CB14) meeting before the summer hiatus, was jam-packed with proposals, some of which were welcomed, and many that were rejected. On Tuesday, June 13, residents, board members and presenters packed the Knights of Columbus to get in their final say before the summer break. On the agenda was informational presentations by the Department of City Planning (DCP) on updating the flood resiliency text amendment and the Department of Transportation (DOT) on a car share pilot program, a public speaking session, plus Land Use & Housing issues, including a controversial vote on whether or not the Beach 116th Street firehouse for Engine 268/ Ladder 137 should be relocated to the long-neglected diner/ bank location on Beach 116th and Beach Channel Drive. Prior to the presentations, some hot topic issues were discussed like the ferry and beach garbage. CB14 President Dolores
Orr said they will continue to put pressure on the ferry operators to release ridership information to determine how the ferry is doing and if more or bigger vessels are required. CB14 has been told that new boats created for Rockaway, will be available by the end of the summer. CB14 District Manager Jon Gaska urged people not to leave still water around to avoid mosquitoes and addressed the beach garbage issue, saying that the Parks Department will add more garbage pails to the beaches so that they aren’t overflowing. A representative from the DCP touched base on the need to update the flood resiliency zoning text amendment, something that was set up immediately following Hurricane Sandy to accommodate needs for the recovery process, but the city is looking to make the text permanent. The DCP is starting the process of acquiring feedback from the Rockaway and Broad Channel communities so that the language of this amendment can be finalized by 2018. There will be future community meetings regarding this matter.
A representative from the DOT was also on hand to discuss a pilot program for car sharing in New York City. Earlier this year, City Council passed legislation requiring the city to reserve parking spaces for car share companies in a two-year pilot program. The city believes car sharing will help reduce traffic around the city and would give people who can’t afford cars, to have access to one. Through car sharing, companies like Zipcar, Enterprise, Car2Go and others can leave a car at select street locations, which members can sign up to use at their convenience, for things like a weekend road trip to picking up groceries. The DOT has been looking into locations for the pilot, and found Rockaway to be a possibility since no such program exists here. They’re specifically looking at the east, from Far Rockaway to Beach 73rd Street. The DOT would reserve 18 parking spots, with two cars at nine locations in this area, to test out the program. Residents can provide feedback and suggestions for locations at Nycdotportals.nyc/nycdot-car-
share-pilot. Next up were Land Use issues. The board voted to allow the location at 104-06 Rockaway Beach Boulevard to continue to be used as a gym. Another proposal to reduce the required parking for a proposed ambulatory facility/ senior housing development at 34-11 Beach Channel Drive, was shot down. Developers requested that the required parking space of 55 spots, be reduced to 33 spots. The board voted against the reduction. Finally, there was a proposal to move the Beach 116th Street firehouse to the old Ram’s Horn/Sunset Diner & HSBC Bank site. With the old firehouse deteriorating, the FDNY was hoping to build a new firehouse at this site. After much discussion about making a resilient firehouse, disruptions to traffic and the quality of life of those on Beach 117th Street and suggestions of other locations, like the Long Island Lighting Company (LILCO) site across from the ferry terminal, the board voted against the FDNY’s acquisition of the Beach 116th Street site.
Local 3 Union Workers — Waiting in Vain for Spectrum Strike to End & BIB to Deliver? By Kami-Leigh Agard
When it rains, it pours — but hopefully the sun will soon come out again for Arverne resident, Stefan Perkins and his union brother and friend, Bobby Sabatino, a Howard Beach resident. Between multiple disappointments with Build It Back (BIB) and being on strike for almost three months with his union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 3 Spectrum field and cable technicians, Perkins is struggling. Sabatino,
who got injured on the job after falling from a pole last winter, is constantly in pain and worried about what his job prospects are if this strike does not end soon. Perkins and Sabatino are among the roughly 1,800 IBEW Local 3 NY and NJ Spectrum workers on strike against Spectrum since March 28. According to Perkins, at the heart of the dispute is Spectrum’s, (which recently bought out Time Warner Cable (TWC) ) refusal to come to an agreement with the union on the main

sticking points. “Spectrum wants to stop all contributions into our pension and medical plan. I’ve worked as a Local 3 field technician for TWC, now Spectrum, for over 23 years. I love my job. Then for this to happen? The union did warn us to be prepared, so I saved every penny I could, which has not been easy because since Hurricane Sandy, I have been waiting for BIB to finish reconstruction of my home. “For four years, my family and I waited in hope that work towards reconstruction of our

And now with this strike, we are literally living on my savings. “To add insult to injury, all Tishman did was raise the house on what they explained were helical piles. Then suddenly work stopped. They did not board up the house or cover the roof. Animals could be living inside,” Perkins said. The RT contacted BIB on behalf of Perkins. The spokesperson released this statement: “BIB encountered issues with this homeowner’s foundation and installation of helical piles were necessary to anchor the home. We have addressed these issues and project a completion of this home by the end of the summer.” Curiously enough, after RT contacted BIB, an astounded Perkins contacted us the next day inquiring, “Did you speak to anyone at BIB? I just received a message from Tishman stating they are sorry for the delay, and plan on starting

This is the first time in months that they have contacted me.” As for Sabatino, like Perkins, he is hoping for this strike to end. “This strike is not about us wanting more money. It’s about keeping our present benefits. If something terrible happened to me, at least I know that my family is taken of. “Like Stefan, I’m also living off my savings. There is a saying in carpentry, ‘Measure twice, but cut once.’ As technicians, the kind of work we do takes precision. Spectrum hired these unqualified outof-state contractors, who don’t have background checks or our training, to do our work during this strike. It’s a huge let down. “I am happy to see the City Council, the Mayor, the Governor and other officials coming out to support us. But as each day rolls by, we are getting desperate. We need all the help we can get to get this strike over with,” Sabatino said.

CHIEF JOHN MORAN MEMORIAL RESTORED On October 29, 2012, a memorial stone in honor of FDNY Battalion Chief John Moran stood in the beach block garden of Beach 118th Street. Chief Moran was killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Superstorm Sandy washed away that memorial stone. Miraculously, in the Sandy cleanup, the stone was found by members of the New York City Sanitation Dept. (DSNY) in the debris being removed from the block. DSNY coordinated the return of the stone to the Moran family, and for the last four years it has been sitting on their front porch. With the restoration of the beach garden, Rockaway Civic Association (RCA) has been working with the Moran family for the return of the memorial stone and commemorative street sign, amongst other items to the Beach 118th Street garden. Last week those plans came together.
On Wednesday June 7, the Department of Transportation reinstalled the street sign. Also on that day, board member Bobby Zimmer of RCA, who was coordinating the reinstallation of the memorial stone, was busy
with Sean Clarke, resident of Beach 120th Street, fabricating the base for the stone. Then on Friday, June 9, members of the FDNY and local construction crews moved and re-installed the memorial stone in what will soon be
the new beach block garden at Beach 118th Street. RCA made restoration of the beach block gardens from Beach 109th Street to Beach 129th Street a priority project for 2017. RCA partnered with NYC Parks Dept. for the opportunity to restore the garden spaces. The restorations cannot happen without community support. So far, gardens are costing between $2,000 and $5,000, depending on the size. This money is being raised solely through private donations, grants, fundraisers and membership dues. Aside from new members, RCA is looking for neighboring residents to step forward and volunteer in the construction, creation and upkeep of the gardens. Every little bit helps. Locals Get Fired Up at Sen. Sanders’ Town Hall About Traffic Safety By Kami-Leigh Agard
After a woman and her two toddlers were seriously injured when struck by a car last Wednesday, June 8 at the intersection of Seagirt Boulevard and Beach 32nd Street, Senator James Sanders, Jr. called an emergency press conference at Beach 73rd Street in front the YMCA last Friday, June 10 with Arverne’s civic association, Heart of Rockaway, local religious leaders, 100th Precinct’s community police officers and concerned residents to demand that the Department of Transportation (DOT) and NYPD do something to prevent future incidents like this from happening, and even worse, fatalities. Just two weeks ago, The Rockaway Times (RT) first reported on Arverne residents’ desperate cry out for help for the DOT and NYPD to rectify the speeding problem and implement traffic safety measures for pedestrians at the intersection of Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard (RBB). (See RT edition
June 1, 2017: “RBB Intersection at B. 73rd St. — A Pedestrian Death Sentence?”). At the press conference, Senator Sanders declared that he is calling on the DOT to implement traffic and speeding controls in the area, and for the NYPD to boost traffic enforcement to decrease accidents and fatalities. “Our community leaders see a problem with speeding in this area, and they are refusing to let it continue. The ideas I have heard thus far to slow down this traffic are reasonable and will not cost
the DOT much. I heard, ’Put a blinking, yellow light at this intersection.’ I heard, ’Draw a crosswalk in the street.’ To me, that all sounds reasonable and will not cost a lot of money, much less time. Together, we are going to work on this. “With the powerful religious leaders and vigilant community residents present, I know that our community is blessed! So I better get hot, and move fast on this critical issue that affects everyone both living and visiting our community,” Senator Sanders said. Arverne By the Sea (ABTS) resi-
dent and president of ABTS homeowners association, Sands Point II, Chun Tom, presented two ideas to the Senator. “Why can’t the DOT relocate the two bus stops to the north side of Beach 73rd Street and make the two lane ’speedway’ from Beach 61st to Beach 73rd Streets, one lane. First off, relocating the bus stops will be more convenient for Stop & Shop customers waiting for a bus, as well as residents from the nearby housing development. Folks will not have to cross this dangerous intersection to get to these two bus stops. Also reducing RBB to one lane in this area will reduce speeding.” Senator Sanders conjectured, “If these two bus stops were relocated, wouldn’t that inconvenience other folks commuting in the area?” Tom responded, “Relocating these two bus stops would prevent the bottle neck caused by the buses stopping, causing a line-ofsight issue for both drivers and pedestrians trying to safely navigate crossing the street.” Continued on page 16

Sanders replied, “On your first suggestion about relocating the bus stops, we can ask DOT if this can be done safely. However, on your second suggestion of reducing the passageway from two lanes to one lane, wouldn’t that add to traffic congestion?� Tom replied, “It will slow down cars speeding. It slowed down Shore Front Parkway, which was reduced from two lanes to one lane on each side. It also slowed down speeding on Cross Bay Boulevard, which was reduced from three lanes to two lanes on each side.� Sanders said, “We will present these ideas to the DOT, and see their response. It’s ok to think outside the box, however, together we have to figure out the best avenue to rectify this safety issue, fast!� The RT reached out to the DOT to find out if and when they will address this problem. The DOT spokesperson responded, “DOT is working with the Department of Design & Construction, as they prepare to implement a capital project along RBB that will cover
this area. The project will address a multitude of concerns including adding left turn bays, extending street width, shortening crossing distances and extending sidewalks – all of which will enhance safety. This location is signalized, and pedestrian countdown signals were added for all crosswalks in 2015. Given state restrictions, we are unable to accommodate a request for speed cameras. Last week, we participated in a press conference held by Transportation Alternatives and stood with residents, elected officials, and other stakeholders to continue efforts to expand our speed camera program. We hope to know more in the next few weeks.� As other attendees voiced their concerns and suggestions, Heart of Rockaway president, Edwin Williams earnestly stated, “All I want is for the DOT to make it happen. This intersection is like a NASCAR speedway. New traffic safety and speeding measures could save a life. We have been waiting for too long. Just this past Tuesday, June 13, a 12-year-old was hit by a car while trying to cross RBB to go play basketball at the YMCA. This has to stop.�

Repairing Your Bar-B-Que By Artie Wallace
A reader wrote in asking, “How to repair her Bar-B-Que.� Be sure the grill is cool and gas is off when working on it. Removing the grate: I’ve seen sites telling people to use tongs. I disagree. With the grill cold, lift it out carefully while wearing rubber gloves. You can use tongs to lift one end (if needed) to get a hold of it. Replace if needed. Remove heat plates and coal: Take them out and place on a piece of newspaper. Replace as needed. Remove burner assembly: This is where it starts to differ. Most burner assemblies gently lift out, however I have seen some that are secured in by a screw. If there is a screw, be gentle unscrewing it. The combination of heat and carbon will make them fragile. If any signs of pitting or wear, replace the burner assembly.
Igniter: If the igniter is not visible, you can check it using a handheld mirror. If you see a spark, it is good. If not, try cleaning it with a little sandpaper before replacing it. Note: Should any of the above parts need to be replaced, new parts are installed by reversing the removal process. Painting your grill: If your grill needs to be painted, first clean it thoroughly using a good degreaser. Only use high temperature enamel barbecue paint. Candidate For The Rail Dear Editor: My campaign to represent the 32nd District in the City Council was endorsed by the Queens Public Transit Committee (QPTC) this week. The QPTC advocates for improving public transportation in our borough and throughout the city. Its signature cause, implementing the QueensRail, the former Rockaway Beach Branch of the Long Island Rail Road, has gained immense traction recently. Thanks to efforts by the group and important figures like former Assemblymember Phil Goldfeder, the MTA is now conducting a feasibility study

This is especially significant in light of the fact that we are fueled by a good idea and unwavering commitment, while our counterparts who wish to turn the train line into a park, are powered by millions of taxpayer dollars. This is about reducing our commutes to and from midtown Manhattan by up to 45 minutes. I will take our tenacity over their well-paid consultants any day. The committee has also been vocal in its opposition to the plan for Select Bus Service on Cross Bay and Woodhaven boulevards. The proposal was rejected by community boards 14, 10 and 9 because it involves removing traffic lanes from a congested thoroughfare and presents safety issues by forcing bus riders into the dangerous median. It also stands to eliminate numerous bus stops in Rockaway as we know them. I am proud to say I have been at the forefront of these battles, as a member of the QPTC and later as its first vice president. We do not quit.
Contrast that with the incumbent council member who claimed the QueensRail "would not happen in our lifetime" and that Select Bus Service was inevitable. Stating that our efforts are futile is distasteful, and raises suspicions about whether he is sincere or merely attempting to discredit a political adversary. When questioned about it at the Rockaway Beach Civic Association meeting, he doubled down on telling us to surrender. As the QPTC understands, standing up for residents on transit is critically important to the future of our community. We cannot afford leadership that tells us results are impossible and refuses to fight for our needs. The choice is clear. A vote for Mike is a vote for better transportation. Traffic Conundrum Dear Editor: The new traffic lines and patterns along Shore Front Parkway are beyond confusing. Is this the way to the land of Oz? I mean itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absolutely ridiculous, there was a serious accident on Beach 102nd Street on Sunday. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crazy! Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
After years of wrestling with my inner demons to accept the fact that my daughter does indeed have autism, I felt that my journey to acceptance was finally over. So what if she does not talk, read or write? So what if her self-help skills aren’t on par with her so-called ‘neurotypical’ peers? I started to focus on what she can and will do, as opposed to what she can’t and may never do. Then another slap in the face, when recently I was asked by a social service agency if she is “high” functioning or “low” functioning? The question baffled me as I always looked at her as “special” functioning — meaning that she was a non-conformist, living life on her own terms — not unlike her eccentric mom and nutty professor dad.

‘High’ Functioning Vs. ‘Low’ Functioning Autism? I literally stuttered, when I answered, “Well, I..I..I don’t know. I never really gave it much thought.” The woman then began to ask me a series of questions: “Does she talk, brush her teeth on her own, have friends, dress herself, cross the street independently, count money…?” I started to tune the woman out, and just blurted out, “Well no to all of the above, but she is amazing on her rollerblades, skateboard and ice skates. She’s strong as an ox, and very athletic.” After an awkward pause, “The woman replied, “Ohhhh…so I guess she is ‘low’ functioning?” If this lady was in front of me, I would have spat in her face. Didn’t she hear what I said? After hanging up, I started to ponder on what the word, “functioning” meant. So I looked it up. According to the dictionary, something that is functioning is working — doing what it's supposed to do. A functioning refrigerator keeps your food cold. A functioning television shows a
clear picture. A functioning group gets things done in an orderly and timely fashion. “Ha!” I thought to myself. “My daughter is 'high' functioning because she is doing exactly what God created her to do. That stupid mingin’ lady!” As an array of colorful explicits filled my head, ruing that I was unable to share them with Ms. Social Services lady, I finally started to calm down. Then I really started to think about the difference between “high” versus “low” functioning. How many of you know someone who has racked up a million college degrees, but can’t keep a job, much less a savings account, and living in his/her parents’ basement? Now compare that to a regular “Joe” who just has a high school diploma, went to vocational school to learn a trade, working productively and well, living under his own roof. Between Mr. Educated and “Joe,” who would you rate as “high” functioning or “low”
functioning? Your call. I see my daughter as “high” functioning. Maybe some of you would say that I am wearing rose-colored lenses, but anyone who has the fortune of encountering my daughter, is baffled by her beauty, physical strength, cunning nature and appetite for life. Sometimes, I’m grateful that she is in a special education classroom setting, which protects her from bullying and becoming a social media junky. So yes, Ms. Social Services lady. My daughter is “high” functioning. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! Mark your calendars! Serves: 4 Ingredients: ¼ cup chopped, peeled fresh peaches 1 small, sweet red pepper, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, minced 1 tablespoon lime juice 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Page 19 1 tablespoon Caribbean jerk seasoning 1 teaspoon dried thyme 1 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed ½ teaspoon seasoned salt 1 pork tenderloin (1 pound) Directions: To make the salsa, in a small bowl, combine first nine ingredients; set aside. In another small bowl, combine the oil, brown sugar, jerk seasoning, thyme, rosemary and seasoned salt. Rub over pork. Grill, covered, over medium heat for 9-11 minutes on each side or until temperature reads 145 degrees. Let stand for five minutes before slicing. Serve with salsa.

ment and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) read The Rockaway Times? In the June 1 edition, Dr. Peter Galvin, who pens the always informative, "Ask the Doc" health column, was way ahead of the curve with his column entitled, "Fentanyl - A Public Risk." Only a week after the "Doc’s" column and accompanying warnings about this drug was published, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, along with acting head of the DEA, Chuck Rosenberg, addressed the media at the DEA’s headquarters in Arlington, VA to discuss the ongoing response to the nation’s staggering opioid epidemic. “Fentanyl is especially dangerous. It is 40 to 50 times more deadly than heroin. Just two milligrams, a few grains of salt, an amount you could fit on the tip of your finger, can be lethal. Fentanyl exposure can injure or kill innocent law enforcement officers and first responders. Inhaling a few airborne particles can have dramatic effects. Fentanyl’s every-

Of course, with all due deference to Dr. Galvin, I must admit that I have always maintained one steadfast rule for consulting with any doctor for what ails me - never go to a doctor whose office plants have died. I also have to admit that the greatest piece of unsolicited health advice I ever received came from one of our editor’s "Boyleing Points" columns about relieving nightly leg cramps by placing a bar of soap under the blankets on the bed by your feet. Believe it or not, it actually worked for me! The Arnemann clan of Broad Channel was out full force in all their finery recently to attend the wedding of Diane and Charles Arenemann’s son, Mark, to his beautiful new wife, Svetlana Stolyarova, over at the Baku Palace in Sheepshead Bay. A great time was had by all including our own, and might I add very dapper, Dan Mundy Jr., who proved
himself to be not only a great civic leader, but nimble of foot as well, while tripping the lights — fantastic! One of the highlights of the day came when Mark’s children, Jamie and Randy, were handed a microphone and asked to each say a few words to their newly married father and stepmother. After Jamie finished with her well wishes for the new couple in front of the assembled crowd, she handed the mic to her obviously very nervous brother, Randy, who had the entire room laughing when he was only able to get out four words - "Yeah, what she said!" Mark and Svetlana, who hails from Russia, were soon on their way to Alaska as part of their honeymoon, but will shortly be departing for the "Land of the Tsars" to do it all again for Svetlana’s parents and relatives who were unable to attend the happy event here in New York. Who knew? A Russian connection right here in Broad Channel! Why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

I Work, You Work, We Work!!!

Back in the day, being the boss meant you had the biggest office in the firm. Over time companies realized that walls were keeping people apart, not allowing them to be collaborative and creative together, so they took down the walls. And thus, the modern open office cubicle structure was invented. Mike Bloomberg was the poster boy for this movement when as Mayor, he had his desk in the middle of a space in City Hall with all his staff around him. But let’s be honest, those environments are hell to work in, aren’t as productive as they were made out to be, and really just saved the City space and money on offices. Recently, a little experiment I got involved in started to take
off, and my partners realized we could no longer afford to be virtual anymore and we decided to get office space. Having been out of the work world for a while, we weren’t sure where to look. We had been at a couple of meetings at a site called WeWork, which we thought was cool. This company was only formed in 2010, a few short years after the 2008 financial meltdown, but they are now a $16 billion company. What do they do, what is their product? Office space! They gobbled up real estate very cheaply after the financial crisis, reconfigured the space and put up glass dividers. You can rent one desk space, two desks, four desks, whatever you want. They have conference rooms, and “phone booth” type spaces for meetings and phone calls. They have a common area that has coffee, tea and get this – free beer! And it’s all very affordable and easy and – well, kinda cool. So, because we work in the
financial markets, we got space at a downtown location, one of more than 30 locations in NYC. But get this, they have them all over the U.S., and by the way, you can go use any of the conference spaces for a nominal fee. It’s like being in an exclusive club! Our location is overwhelming! It’s the old Goldman Sachs building on Broad Street, with Stone Street pubs literally out the back door. We now sit in our space looking out from the same vantage point that those Masters of the World once did: Goldman Sachs! And the space attracts young, hip entrepreneurs who are starting their own businesses. It’s like a beehive or incubator for ideas and collaboration. It freaks me out a little to be coming up the elevator next to a kid about 20 years old with ripped jeans and a tee shirt and skateboard who might be the next Mark Zuckerberg (he’s the Facebook guy, btw). Of course we refer to our lit-
tle part of this environment as the “geriatric ward” and look for our medications to be dispersed around 2 p.m. daily, but it is still fun. One downside to this arrangement was the unhappy discovery by my son, while starting his new job one bright Monday morning, that he now works in the same building again as his father. Some kids have no luck! In addition, rather than collaborate with my partners by phone in my pajamas, denying that their phone call actually woke me up at 10 a.m., I now find myself face-to-face with them in an office. As they are younger than me, this is tougher on them than me. But the free beer in the morning does round out the edges a bit. So I have discovered that this is now how the world works. I spent way too much time in one building during my career. The future is here. Now all I have to do is learn how to text with my thumbs! A new beginning, now let’s get to work.

Retreat Going on a retreat is a special time for yourself to withdraw from the normal everyday life and cocoon, so that you emerge ready to return to life with a new perspective. It can be one of the most uplifting experiences. Pausing and stepping off the hamster wheel. You begin to hear the birds singing, you take deep breaths smelling the flowers, grass and earth. You connect to nature and realize we are all one. Taking a walk in the woods in silence, you hear all the sounds of nature. It is empowering to embrace it all. You connect to your soul and all other beings in silence. Often there is a spa, similar to our very own Spa Rockaway, where you can receive amazing massage treatments and other services. It is truly a gift to yourself when you have these services. The spa at Menla Mountain Retreat House is spectacular with massage therapists coming from all over the country to serve the guests. The first year I did not get a massage, but since then I have booked one every year
The Rockaway Times and it has made all the difference for me. Some people have enough just being at the retreat and spending quality time in nature. They are happy to just be in retreat mode. Retreats often take place in humble dwellings with simple vegetarian food from the garden. We eat off the land, take hikes in the mountains, spend time in contemplation and enjoy one another’s company. There is such richness in simplicity. Shedding our layers of armor, we begin to become alive and whole again. We come back home with renewed energy and start fresh. The most beautiful thing about going on a retreat is that you find yourself and know that everything is going to be ok because you trust and believe. Learning to pause, listen, and breathe will open your eyes to your beautiful life. We are blessed to have this one life to live. One day at a time, one moment, one breath. Dino Tomassetti Remembered
My father was and is one of a kind. He fought valiantly until he got tired. He has taught me so much through his example: lessons of tenacity, the importance of overcoming hardships and great strength. His strength and determination, even after he had his accidents, are a source of inspiration to everyone who knows him and loves him. One simple phrase that he has uttered to me a number of times throughout my life was: “Lorraine, nothing is impossible.” That phrase, as simple and common as it sounds, is one thing that sticks out in my mind when I think of my father. He went above and beyond throughout his extraordinary life to prove that countless times through his numerous accomplishments, and as the song goes, he did it “his way.” He was also there
for me along with my mom, including during my cancer ordeal when I was losing my hair. Joe and I came to their house and I was crying and he comforted me and said, “I wish I can say, ’Let it (hair loss) happen to me instead of you.” Even with what he was going through with his health issues after his accident, he always put family first, making sure to ask how we were feeling, if we were sick or in pain. May father was larger than life and we will miss him. Now you can rest in peace, Dad. We all love you forever. (Eulogy by Lorraine Cappuccio, Dino Tomassetti’ s daughter). ***
My father, Dino Tomassetti Sr., was a giant of man. Even standing at a modest physical height, he cast a shadow far greater than one would expect at first sight.

Everyone has heard the archetypal story of the young man that travels from a foreign land with just the clothes on his back and a burning fire in his belly to make better of himself, the people, and the world around him. My father is that man. The character of the man that accomplished those things is one of great fortitude, energy, persistence, desire, and a sheer strength of will that could literally move mountains. My father always felt that if he believed he could do something, it could be done. And he believed he could do anything. The man I am describing seems superhuman. But that was just one facet of my father’s character. I loved my dad the most for his most human traits. He was a compassionate, loving, and extremely intelligent man with a sharp wit, great sense of humor, brilliant smile, and a way with words that belied the fact that English was not his first language. He had an abundance of charisma and charm that I often tried to emulate but seldom if ever succeeded. He always put family first, despite being so driven to success. He never passed on an opportunity to help those that were less fortunate than him. It was something that made him so proud. He had a gravity about him; an ability to pull the good people around him into his orbit, just as the sun tugs the planets. One minute he could shout and holler, and then the next he would give you a smile and a pat on the back. We’ve all experienced, at one point or

another, his protruding lower jaw signifying anger. He was as fierce as the fiercest lion and yet he never made me feel like I was not the most beloved person in his life. For me, my father was a compass that always pointed me to True North. My greatest motivation in life was always to make him proud, to get his approval. The greatest gifts he ever gave to me were those invaluable lessons exemplified by the life that he led. I suspect that there are many others in life that he touched in the same way. By his words and actions, he taught his seven children how to be strong, self-sufficient, and good people. And that’s how his legacy will live on; through the lives and actions of his children, his grandchildren, their children, and the countless other lives that he touched. Of course, the construction business was a huge part of his life, and he truly mastered his field. l often say that success in the field of construction is about being a problem solver and overcoming challenges as they present themselves. I was always awed by his ability to look at challenges differently than anyone else, and immediately and effortlessly come up with inventive and out-of-the-box solutions. In this way, he was a brilliant and resourceful leader. Many may not know this, but he seemingly had the ability to control the weather. One of my favorite stories of him starts on the morning of a 500-yard concrete mat pour on one of our projects in Manhattan. I got to the yard at 5:30 a.m.
and it was a torrential downpour. Conventional wisdom in construction is that you don’t pour a finished slab in a heavy rain. I was ready to postpone the pour. I was on the phone with my brother Rocco, who was also ready to cancel the concrete delivery. Then dad shows up. "Ok, we’re going to pour ... " We started placing concrete a little bit before 7 a.m., and by the time we were ready to start finishing the slab, the rain had stopped, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. And the best part was, because of the rain, no one else in the city of New York was pouring concrete that day, so we had extra trucks available to finish early. This was not a fluke. He had done this on more than one occasion. So as we gather here today, let’s not mourn the death of Dino Tomassetti Sr., rather let’s celebrate the life and legacy of a great man, and let’s continue to carry on that legacy and make him proud. Just as I can look out on the Manhattan skyline and see all of the physical monuments that he had a part in constructing, I can look out upon the people in this room and see all the lives that he touched in one way or another. While he will be sorely missed, he will never be forgotten. If I know my father, I bet you he’s looking down on all of us right now and saying, "Get back to work." I also know that heaven just got one hell of a Builder to shape that place up. Goodbye Papa. We Love You. (Eulogy by Dino Tomassetti, Jr.)

St. John’s Hospital Receives $10M
St. John’s Episcopal Hospital is getting some much-needed funding. Senator James Sanders Jr. announced on Wednesday, June 14 that Rockaway’s only hospital received the final approval needed from the State Comptroller's Office to be awarded more than $10 million in state funding, which means it can begin renovations on its Emergency Department. “St. John’s is the only hospital in my district, and indeed, all of Rockaway,” Sanders said. “Having reliable health care services is literally a matter of life and death.
This funding will go a long way in ensuring St. John’s is better prepared to meet our increasingly high demands.” Senator Sanders has long been a proponent for the funding and worked hard to ensure that it finally arrived. His advocacy did not go unnoticed by senior hospital officials. "A special thank you to Senator Sanders for his tremendous support and assistance in getting us to this point," said Renee Hastick-Motes, Vice President of External Affairs for St. John's Episcopal Hospital. "This is great news for St. John's and the Rockaway community." St. John's serves more than 130,000 people on the peninsula annually. It has 240 beds, more than 400 physicians and 1,500 employees. The new influx of funding comes from a pot of $672.9 million in grants that was set aside for New York to improve health care services.

Better Protection? Provide Safety I always kinda snickered at the thought process that government needs to protect us from ourselves, but recently I can see the value in this thinking. But maybe there needs to be a different and expanded approach to this thinking, rather than just preventing people from doing something so they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get harmed. On May 19 around 6 p.m. when all the concessions were excited

What baffles me (and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure many other residents) is that we have this thing called daylight savings, so we can be outdoors longer and enjoy the daylight. That means doing things at the

With no one on the beach, in a panic, I rushed to them and dragged them onto my board in the super strong current, paddling/pushing them on my board sideways to get out of the current. Ten minutes later I got them to the beach and they walked away. Everyone on the beach still oblivious that two 16-year-old-girls were practically as good as dead had I not been so lucky to be there. Then on Monday night another two people were rescued from drowning by a surfer and an NYPD officer, William Lauria, 23, normally from 105th Precinct, but assigned a summer detail at the 100th Precinct. Again this happened after life-
beach, you know, like swimming. Why else do you go to the beach 93-degree day? It is absolutely absurd to shut down a beach at 6 p.m. when there are so many people in the water, and expect them to obey archaic rules/laws to get out of the ocean on a mega hot day. So instead of two or three Park Enforcement Patrol (PEP) officers driving ATVs up and down the shoreline, whistling people out of the water, all of whom will go straight back in once they leave, how about expanding the common sense thinking and protect these people by keeping a separate shift of lifeguards on duty until at least 8 p.m.? You know theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going in the water, stop neglecting peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s safety. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great when Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver said there hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been any drownings on Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beaches while lifeguards are on duty for the last three years. How about all the drownings when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not on duty? Protect the people, provide vigilance and safety, should they get in harmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way. I sure as hell know that not one of those PEP officers would go in to save someone.

The brooms made their way back to the field this week as every matchup was a sweep. Early game action had the Knights of Columbus repeat last week, losing Game 1 6-4 and then mercied in Game 2 as the Mudsharks got their first wins of the year. The Army finally was here as they kept the Orioles losing streak going and got their first franchise wins by winning 14-7 and 8-3. Also getting their first franchise wins were the Kings as they took down the Member Berries 17-2 and 9-3. In the later games, Old Head got mercied twice against Morning Wood, 13-0 and 14-2. The Misfits, rocking their new white jerseys, squeezed past a Chuggernauts team who were missing some starters, 6-3 and 5-3. Finally, we had the Moneyballs put up a couple touchdowns as they rolled over the NoShows winning 22-10 and 19-3. It is shaping up to be a great season. Here is a look at this weekend games. 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Orioles vs Old Head - When will the “Streak” finally be over. Last year the Orioles got their only win by a rain-out over Old Head. Both teams are winless and need a W if they want a chance to play for the trophy. PREDICTION: Split. 9:30 a.m. Field 2, Knights of Columbus vs Misfits - Knights are off to a slow start and are looking for their first win. Misfits are under new management and off to a nice start. This is an East division matchup and could determine who’s in and out during playoff time. PREDICTION: Split. 9:30 a.m. Field 3, Mudsharks vs Chuggernauts - Mudsharks shook off the rust and won both games this past Sunday. Chuggers hope their full team shows up and on time this week but not sure it will matter who shows up for them. Look for the Sharks to start a little run. PREDICTION: Mudsharks Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 1, The Army vs Member Berries
- After sitting tied for 1st place the Member Berries fell to .500 Sunday. They need to get back into the W column playing in a tough West Division. The Army plays in the East and is looking to stay undefeated in their young season. Hopefully the Berries will have their jerseys and not be forced to wear purple t-shirts. PREDICTION: Split. 11:30 a.m. Field 2, Kings vs NoShows - The No-Shows are off to a slow start and need to bounce back after losing pretty bad last week. Kings are looking to take down everyone in their way in order to win the West. PREDICTION: Kings Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 3, Morning Wood vs Moneyballs ***GAME OF THE WEEK*** - A battle of the two top teams from each division.They are a combined 8-0 and have scored more than 100 runs. Last time they squared off M.W. won 14-2 twice but this is a New Moneyball team. Payback or does the Wood keep rollin? PREDICTION: Split. STANDINGS East 1. Morning Wood 4-0 2. Misfits 2-0 3. Little League Recap ONE-RUN GAMES HIGHLIGHT PLAYOFF OPENERS Post-season baseball often produces tense action; the first round of Rockaway Little League’s playoffs delivered as expected. Three opening round games were decided by the smallest of margins. In Major Boys, the Neponsit Realty Giants edged the Drive Safe Mariners 7-6 in a see-saw battle. Minor Boys’ top-seeded team, the Wave Publishing Giants, narrowly avoided an upset by the Stop and Shop Mariners and prevailed 10-9. In Pee Wee Seniors, the #4 seed Breezy Dog Rockies edged the #5 seed Denis O’Connor Giants, 5-4. The Rockies broke a tie in the bottom of the fifth and then held off a Giants’ rally that left the bases loaded in the final frame. Another close game was played in Major Girls softball where the #2 seed Knights of Columbus Pandas held off the #3 seed BBA Bonnies 12-10.
In other Major Girls action, the regular-season champion Graybeard Hilltoppers got off to a strong post-season start by beating the El Caribe Caterers Tigers 17-4. The Tigers had advanced by scoring 12 runs in their final at bat to win the #4 vs. #5 “play-in” game. Every team in the five competitive divisions qualified for the post-season.
