Local Pays it Forward to Team Rubicon in Coronavirus Relief Effort By Katie McFadden

After Hurricane Sandy devastated Rockaway in 2012, one of the many organizations that stepped up to the plate to help was Team Rubicon. The efforts of this organized group of volunteers, mostly made up of veterans, were not soon forgotten. One local, Ed Shevlin, sure didn’t forget, and when an opportunity arose to pay it back to the group that helped lift Rockaway up after one of its most difficult times, he jumped right on it. As New Yorkers faced the new challenge of coronavirus, Shevlin stepped up as a volunteer for Team Rubicon and other charitable organizations to uplift fellow New Yorkers through the pandemic. At the time of Hurricane Sandy, Ed Shevlin was a member of another group that many considered to be heroes after the storm—the NYC Department of Sanitation. It was then that he learned of Team Rubicon, which had set up operations on Rockaway Beach Boulevard near Beach 124th Street. As part of Shevlin’s role operating the sanitation motor pool, he had the responsibility of transporting fellow sanitation workers to their trucks and equipment around Sandy-devastated areas. In between those drop-offs, Shevlin had some free time, so he put it to good use. “I would drive past Team Rubicon’s command post and would drive their people out to jobs on their list,” Shevlin said. The efforts of Team Rubicon, mucking and gutting out flooded homes and removing debris, was praised by locals in need. “Everybody in town has a favorable opinion of them,” Shevlin said. So when coronavirus started to hit the city and Team Rubicon put out a call to help those facing this latest disaster, Shevlin answered. Shevlin’s experiences helping others as a sanitation worker during Hurricane Sandy stuck with him. “I don’t ever want to assume the role of victim unless I’m lying flat on my back. As long as I’m healthy and strong, it’s important for me to be of service,” Shevlin said. “I felt great about our disaster response as a sanitation worker, and when I retired in

2015, I thought, ‘what am I gonna do now?’” When Breezy Point’s Marty Ingram, Commander of the 88th Area Command for the New York Guard, asked Shevlin to join, he took on the challenge. In March 2016, at age 55, Shevlin joined the NY Guard and became a Deputy Commander of the 88th Area Command. When coronavirus struck New York, Shevlin expected to be called for a mission in response but found that his services weren’t needed. Yet that itch to help was still there. Out of his job as a truck driver for the TV and movie industry, Shevlin had the time. “I needed to serve,” Shevlin said. Despite knowing people who died of coronavirus, including his own aunt who died in a nursing home, Shevlin was determined to take the risk to help others in need. In early April, Shevlin started volunteering with Catholic Charities. “I worked with them for a month, helping them do volunteer work, bringing food to underprivileged people mainly in immigrant neighborhoods in Queens. People who have no safety net, no unemployment, no stimulus money. How were they going to eat? Catholic Charities filled that need and I used

my pickup truck to deliver food to parishes with large immigrant populations and we fed them through that,” Shevlin said. Through his job, he then learned of an effort, Feeding the Frontlines, in mid-April. “We set up a food truck at NYU Winthrop and I was delivering 400 meals a day to North Shore LIJ Hospital. I have a lot of family in healthcare professions, so it felt good to feed the doctors and nurses and staff there,” Shevlin said. “I was doing that two nights a week while helping Catholic Charities by day.” In the midst of this, Shevlin had applied to help Team Rubicon. After an extensive background check process, he finally got the call and in late April, he began his mission as a volunteer for Team Rubicon. Team Rubicon’s relief efforts also focused on food support, with teams of volunteers making individual bags of food from deliveries of produce and dry goods. “I started working with them in Staten Island and we were feeding people out there. In the course of the day, we would get 10,000 to 15,000 meals out to people in need,” he said. “It was a great feeling.” As Shevlin continued his efforts, he was transferred to another loca-

tion in Brownsville that had a unique operation. “Ubers, Lyfts and green and yellow taxis all lined up on the street at 3 a.m. There would be as many as 900 of them, and we loaded prepacked boxes of food into their cabs. They were given a list of homes to deliver food to,” he said. Shevlin was made a Strike Team Leader for this effort, in which he helped organize six to eight other volunteers. He was eventually sent back to Staten Island as a Strike Team Leader, where he continued his efforts, while also putting in time to help Catholic Charities. While Shevlin explained that while not all Team Rubicon volunteers have military backgrounds, he worked alongside many who did. “It was an amazing group of people I was working with. Many had served in Afghanistan and Iraq. There was one guy who got out six months ago and was an Osprey pilot in the Marine Corps and a graduate of the Naval Academy. There was another woman on the team who had left the Army as a First Lieutenant and had been in Bosnia as an aide to a general. She was the hardest working volunteer there with Team Rubicon,” Shevlin said. Shevlin took a break from his efforts with Team Rubicon last week, but plans on reupping with them soon, as long as he’s needed. On Saturday, Shevlin received a personalized postcard from Team Rubicon, thanking him. “Your work is helping combat food insecurity for those hard hit by this crisis,” the note read. Spending his time volunteering, Shevlin says it has restored his faith in humanity. “I learned that there are really good people who are willing to step up and help people who need the help,” Shevlin said. “It solidifies my faith and when you’re volunteering alongside these other great people, or when you’ve stayed home and donated to food banks, you’ve done your part. Everyone is doing their part in this crisis and it is a testimony to the American people that they always step up to help their neighbors. It’s great to be a part of that.”

Rockaway Mourns NYPD Inspector Justin Lenz By Katie McFadden

The Rockaway community was left in mourning after NYPD Inspector Justin Lenz died unexpectedly on Thursday. June 18. Lenz was a nearly 30-year member of the NYPD, who spent some time serving as the Commanding Officer of Far Rockawayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 101st Precinct. He allegedly died of a heart attack. Lenz was 55. Lenz had joined the police force in 1990. He spent much of that time with the 76th Precinct, but from February 2015 to May

2017, he commanded the 101st Precinct. Most recently, he was the commanding officer of the NYPDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office of Professional Development. Lenz was also a former U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major of the 42nd Infantry Division and had served in the Iraq War in 2003. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hearts all over Far Rockaway are broken today with devastating news that former C.O. Justin Lenz has passed away,â&#x20AC;? the 101st Precinct tweeted the day

after Lenz died. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was a selfless patriot who dedicated his professional life to public service. Our prayers go out to his family as we all mourn the loss of this true leader/friend.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Inspector Lenz was an incredible leader, mentor, and was loved by those under his command. He was a friend to all and will truly be missed,â&#x20AC;? Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to

his family during this difficult time.â&#x20AC;? Lenz, who lived in Bellmore, is survived by his wife, Rita, and two children. A socially wake was held at Charles J. Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Shea Funeral Home in Wantagh, N.Y. on Monday, June 22. A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, June 23 at The Parish of Saint Barnabas in Bellmore. His direct family continued with the internment at Calverton National Cemetery.

Early Election Results Show Strong Frontrunners By Katie McFadden

The results are in, unofficially. Tuesday, June 23 was primary day and locally, Democrats had the opportunity to pick their candidates for several positions including District 5’s Congress member, Queens Borough President, Female District Leader for District 23 Part B, Queens County Civil Court Judge, Assembly member for District 31 and even President. As we go to press, several candidates are clear frontrunners, but with thousands of absentee ballots still to be counted, official results may not be available for at least a week. Some voters encountered issues at some polling sites including not receiving full ballots and broken voting machines, indicating problems that need to be addressed with the Board of Elections, but it didn’t stop more than 471,000 New Yorkers and 112,000 Queens residents from turning up to the polls to vote in their local primaries.

Congressman Meeks appears to be the clear winner with a landslide vote for Congress District 5.

For President, with nearly 66% of the vote, New York selected Joe Biden as their candidate, but Bernie Sanders, despite dropping out of the campaign, had nearly 20% of the vote. In the primary race for Congress District 5, Shaniyat Chow-

dhury presented a challenge to longtime congressman Gregory Meeks, but early results have Meeks winning in a landslide. With 98.61 scanners reported, Meeks has 78.42% of the vote with 34,413 votes, while Chowdhury has 21.27% with 9,336 votes. In the primary race for Queens Borough President, with 96.53% of scanners reported, local councilman Donovan Richards is the projected winner. As we go to press, he has 41,915 votes, or 37.18% of the vote. Elizabeth Crowley is behind Richards with 31,781 votes, or 28.19% of the vote. Costa Constantinedes earned 15.23% of the vote, with Anthony Miranda trailing right behind with 14.74% of the vote. In the primary race for Assembly District 31, with 99% of scanner reported, 24-year-old Khaleel Anderson has a strong lead with 2,888 or 38.13% of the vote. Richard David trails behind with 2,113 or 27.89%

of the vote. Lisa George has 1,404, or 18.53% of the vote. Shea Uzoigwe has 7.25%, Derrick Deflorimonte has 4.25% and Tavia Blakley has 3.75%. In the race for Female Democratic District Leader District 23 Part B, with 99% of scanners reported, Jeannette Garramone has the lead with 1,170, or 61.71% of the vote, and Torey Schnupp has 706, or 37.24% of the vote. With coronavirus impacting this year’s election and many voters resorting to absentee or mail-in ballots instead of taking the risk of showing up at poll sites, many votes are yet to be counted. Voters had until election day, June 23, to postmark their absentee ballots, and those received up to seven days after election day will still need to be counted, so official vote counts and winners may not be available until July. Many of these primary winners will go on to face challengers in the November 3, 2020 election.

Locations moved, long delays. Donovan Richards (candidate for Boro Prez) reported scanners were down at I.S. 53. Many people will receive mail-in ballots. Too bad, they will receive them after the vote has been held. ***** The owners of 226 Beach 101st Street, the site of the homeless shelter, have taken an $8 million loan against the building, with rent as collateral. ***** Yes, we have noticed that every night seems like the 4th of July. The nightly explosions are happening across the city. And not

just this city. The fireworks are plaguing people everywhere. Boston clocked 1,445 complaints in the first week of June â&#x20AC;&#x201D; compared to just 22 in the same week in 2019. And just last year, Philadelphia made them legal! With everything thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s come our way, we were half-expecting locusts, but not fireworks. We have to ask about the mental state of people who think setting off explosions in the middle of the night is ok. ***** As summer season gets underway, please try your best at maintaining social distancing and continue to wear face coverings. With all the news about Arizona and Texas having major spikes, we really donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to repeat what happened here in April and May. ***** The 100th Precinct has released a video of the incident on the boardwalk last Saturday at which a police officer used a chokehold. The video is on YouTube (search 100th Precinct NYPD Arrest June 21, 2020) and is worth a look to get a full understanding of what occurred.

***** The Edgemere Farm on Beach 45th Street is inviting the public to visit the farm stand on every Friday between the hours of noon and five. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have lots of great stuff. Strawberries, kale, lettuce, turnips, radishes, rainbow chard, collard greens, flowers, herbs, eggs, and more. The Farm also has a weekend market on Beach 74th. Lou Harris, founder of the East Coast chapter of the Black Surfing Association, coordinated another paddle out on Saturday, June 20. Hundreds took to the water to bring attention to police injustice and to support Black Lives Matter. ***** A long and detailed story about lifeguard union boss, Peter Stein is in the most recent edition of New York Magazine. According to the piece, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stein relies on a playbook of patronage, power brokering, and intimidation.â&#x20AC;? Janet Fash, a beloved lifeguard and friend to many in Rockaway, has battled him for a long time.

SWIMMING ALLOWED JULY 1 CONCESSIONS SLOWLY OPEN

Ready, set, swim! Well, in less than a week. Beginning July 1, city beaches will officially open for the season and lifeguards will be on duty. With temperatures regularly surpassing 80 degrees and with increasing pressure from the City Council, which was preparing legislation to force the city’s hand, Mayor de Blasio announced on Tuesday night that swimming will be permitted next Wednesday. City pools, however, will remain closed. “Our beaches will be open

Lifeguards are ready to go, training is being completed, it will be a great day for NYC,” de Blasio said. “Social distancing still on the beaches, the face coverings still on the beaches, we gotta be smart.” New York City entered Phase 2 of its reopening plan on Monday, June 22, which allows for bar/restaurants with outdoor dining to open and permits real estate firms, hair salons and other offices to get back to business. New York state has recently recorded the lowest percentage of positive Covid-19 test results since March. Rockaway Beach traditionally opens the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, but coronavirus restrictions were in place and swimming beaches were among the outlets shut during lockdown. off-limits, surfers and paddleboarders, have filled the waters off Rockaway. Even with the restrictions in place, some have swimmers have ignored the ban and taken a plunge–though not always with a happy result. A 24-year-old man drowned on May 22, before lifeguards would have been on duty. Readers are urged to resist going into the water unless lifeguards are on duty. Riis Park is expected to follow NYC’s guidelines for lifeguards and swimming, meaning federal lifeguards are also expected to be on duty starting July 1. With beach openings, people often think of concessions next. They’re opening! Although the boardwalk concessions have had to adapt to restrictions in the age of coronavirus, they will open for to-go service. As we go to press, opening concessions will have food and alcohol, but there will be no tables available and no enter-

tainment. On Wednesday, June 24, Caracas on Beach 106th was the first to test the waters, offering arepas and drinks from their newly-formatted to-go windows. The Beach 97th concession is expected to open July 1, but only Low Tide Bar, La Fruteria and High 97 will be operating. Rippers on Beach 86th Street is expected to open sometime next week. It may not be your typical summer, but it’s something!

100th Precinct Officer Suspended Following Chokehold Arrest By Katie McFadden

An incident during the morning of Sunday, June 21, sparked afternoon protests and resulted in a police officer from the 100th Precinct being suspended without pay as the incident is investigated. Fury grew after a short clip posted to social media depicted an officer putting a black man in an alleged chokehold during an arrest on the boardwalk on Beach 113th Street. An NYPD body cam video later painted a fuller picture of what took place before, during and after the arrest. In the wake of Black Lives Matter protests, many were left angered to see a viral video depicting a 100th Precinct officer with his arm around the neck of a black man who was arrested on Sunday. The incident came a little more than a week after Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill banning chokeholds during arrests. As the man is arrested, another man can be heard in the background

of the short clip saying, “Stop choking him.” A fellow officer is seen tapping the shoulder of the officer with his arm around the man’s neck, and he releases his hold. The 25-second clip ends, showing the man not moving on the ground. The video made its rounds around social media, causing NYPD to respond immediately, saying “There is an active use of force investigation underway by the Internal Affairs Bureau. This matter is taken extremely seriously.” By 3 p.m. that day, Queens Defenders called for a protest in front of the 100th Precinct, saying “Earlier today, a young black man was assaulted,

choked unconscious and removed to the hospital for sitting on the boardwalk listening to music with friends. This is not acceptable.” About 50 people showed up to the protest to announce their outrage over the incident. The man arrested in the video was identified as 35-year-old Ricky Bellevue. The officer was identified as David Afanador, who has 15 years on the job. Another incident in which Afanador allegedly used his gun to strike a teen in the mouth in 2014, was brought to light. In a 2016 court case, Afanador was found not guilty. By 6:30 p.m., NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea released information about the Afanador’s immediate suspension, as well as the full body cam footage of the incident. The quick actions were praised by some. “Accountability in policing is essential. After a swift investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau, a police officer involved in a disturbing apparent

chokehold incident in Queens has been suspended without pay,” Shea tweeted. “While a full investigation is still underway, there is no question in my mind that this immediate action is necessary.” The 35-minute body cam video on YouTube provides a larger picture of what led up to Bellevue’s arrest. At 8:45 a.m., police responded to a call of an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) on the boardwalk. Passersby claimed three men had been there for as long as two hours, harassing people as they went for morning bike rides and walks. As the police respond, they joined fellow officers on the boardwalk, speaking to Bellevue and two white men. Officers are heard identifying Bellevue as an EDP. In a 10-minute span before the arrest, Bellevue is seen on camera telling officers, “I’ll throw sh*t in your face” and “Want me to smack you?” One of the white Continued on page 29

SFDS CLASS OF 2020 GETS A ROCKAWAY-STYLE GRADUATION It was a true Rockaway-style graduation. Donning their caps and gown, the St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy Class of 2020 celebrated their moment with a bike ride and a dip in the Atlantic. Coronavirus may have derailed their traditional graduation ceremony, but parents were determined to make sure the SFDS Class of 2020 had their day. In an effort organized by parents, the graduating eighth graders hopped on their bikes and rode along Rockaway Beach Boulevard, while proud

parents, family members and friends watched and cheered along. All of the students turned up towards the beach block on Beach 129th and gathered on the beach for the traditional cap toss, before running into the ocean, many while wearing their gowns, marking their accomplishment of graduating elementary school and heading off to high school next year. Frustrated In Far Rockaway Dear Editor: A few weeks back, The Rockaway Times congratulated all the community board volunteers that were reinstated for another two year term by the interim Queens Borough President. With that said, I'm writing this letter Tuesday morning Election Day as I walk along the beach in the mid and upper Beach 20s where I live. Maybe our community board members don't spend time on the beach and surrounding area in Far Rockaway, because the beach in the Beach 20s is a disgrace. It is littered with debris which includes bottles, garbage bags, broken glass, and rotten food from religious nightly rituals. The same debris has been there since Sunday. This year, there isn't one trash can on the beach for beachgoers to use. I also notice how the vacant lots surrounding the beach along the mid- twenties until about Beach 35th Street is littered with trash and illegally parked cars which also includes at least a half dozen abandoned cars. I see a beautiful public school on Beach 28th-29th Street with a wellgroomed playing field. Un-

fortunately, those children whose windows face east see nothing but a parking lot with derelict/abandoned vehicles. Every representative of the community board has ignored over the last year and a half. Emails with pictures have been sent multiple times to our local community board without any response or action. Also, many calls and emails by me were sent to the 101 Precinct, the Parks Commissioner, the DOT, the Mayor, the Sanitation Department and our many local politicians. I have not received any responses or seen any changes. In fact, as I'm writing this letter, I now see an abandoned car was now just left on beach 26th Street about 50 feet from our taxpayers’ $140 million boardwalk. The reason I find it hard to believe that Community Board 14 cares is because they have never responded to any of my emails laying out my concerns regarding my community. Those emails included detailed pictures. Where are the community board members from? I find it hard to believe any live in Far Rockaway. If they did, I'm sure they would have seen the lounge chair off of Beach 33rd Street that has been sticking out like a sore thumb in a vacant lot off the boardwalk for the last 10 months. aware of the garbage, illegal cars and abandoned vehicles. How hard would it be to for the board to call and make a plan with the sanitation department, the police and the DOT to do something about the trash, illegally parked cars and the junk littering our community, and why haven't they? Far Rockaway held the record for second highest death toll per capita from the coronavirus, yet until very recently, Far Rockaway, a community of over 70,000 had no permanent testing sites and why NOT?! The shopping center that was in the center of Far Rockaway at Central and Mott was torn down for affordable housing. In doing so, one of the only two banks in Far Rockaway town proper was forced to close its doors. But no big deal, Far Rockaway residents can do what many Rockaway residents having been already doing, do most of their shopping in the Five Towns. Truth be told, I see nothing in my neighborhood that makes me pleased that our members of Community Board 14 were reinstated for another two year term. Harvey Brownstein

After all our hard work getting our levels down, we don’t need a spike in cases. We are all in this together and true New Yorkers in times of trouble come together to overcome. Dear Editor: In early May, I wrote a letter to the Editor that this paper was kind enough to publish. It stated that we should stay the course and remain locked down and watch to see what happened in the states that were beginning to reopen. It looks like that was the correct move. By Beth Hanning Rockaway, The Best I have written many columns about why I think Rockaway is the best community ever. I feel we need this column more than ever as we see so much turmoil in our city and especially our town. I am trying to stay positive in the pandemic and focus on the good in our community and hope that it outshines the negative. This past weekend two very important events happened for our local graduates. One thing was something I hope becomes a tradition each year and it was a 100%

Rockaway event. For those of you who do not know, one local Catholic school has a fabulous tradition that the eighth graders walk through the building on their last day and the students line the hallways and cheer for them and give high fives. Each year I see the video I become emotional and say, “What a nice tradition.” My brother-in-law, who does not often feel bad for people, mentioned that he felt bad about the graduates not performing in this ritual, as he loved that his son was

able to be a part of it. This year, I believe the graduates got a pretty good runner-up event. The parents organized a bike parade along Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Our very own Lynn Duffy was master of ceremonies and rode along the back of an elaborately decorated pickup truck wearing a cap and gown, playing graduation music and chanting “SFDS.” In true Rockaway fashion, the Boulevard was packed with excited spectators, many whom were donned in blue and gold and holding signs for the graduates. The grass mall was then decorated with all of the graduates’ graduation signs. The students rode their bicycles with caps and gowns (many were barefoot!) They then finished by cycling under a balloon arch and rode to the beach where they proudly threw their caps and gowns in the air and then went for a graduation dip! It also held true to another tradition that the seventh grade parents help. The seventh

Page 23 grade parents always assist with the dinner dance. Thank you to my friend who loves my driving and asked me to be her chauffeur. It was special. The second event was a prom for local high school graduates. Many of my old “tutorees” attended and looked fabulous in gowns and suits. The family which hosted seemed to go all out with the decorations and it looked like a great time was had by all. We live in such a great place that everyone got together to do something special for their children and make them feel a bit normal in this crazy world. Congratulations to all of our local graduates. Good luck in your next endeavor. Also, good luck to all of the local businesses who opened this week. Please remember, if you head out be kind everyone is learning new rules and regulations. Hepatitis E Most people, when they think about hepatitis, are aware of types A, B, and C. But there is a type D and a type E as well. Today’s topic is hepatitis E (HEV). All five types of viral hepatitis cause similar symptoms. They infect the liver, causing it to become inflamed. Symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fatigue, joint pains, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark tea-colored urine, and light colored, tannish stools. Many people with HEV are not even aware that they have it, as symptoms are often mild. Most

sanitation and hygiene, for example the Middle East, Africa, central America, and in East and South Asia. When seen here in the US, it is often in people who travelled to these areas. Large outbreaks have occurred in refugee camps and other environments subject to overcrowding. Also, it is a zoonotic disease, meaning it is found in animals and can be transmitted by them. Infection may occur after consuming undercooked or raw animal meats, especially pork, bear, and venison. It is also found in raw shellfish in the areas where it is more common (see above). Eating raw fish, shellfish, and meats in these areas is never a good idea and can be dangerous. HEV may be diagnosed with a blood test, although the sample needs to be sent to a specialized lab as not all labs can perform the test. Most people will fully recover with rest, fluids, avoidance of alcohol, acetaminophen, and other medications that may damage the liver. Supportive hospital

We’d all like to think that we are intelligent people who can tell the difference between an urban legend, hard facts and just a good story. Sometimes we just get sucked in. Through the years, I’ve heard lots of stories and rumors that have been both entertaining and at other times, just weird. Here are four sure fire favorites that will make you popular around the watercooler. If, of course, we ever go back to where we can gather around watercoolers. Myth or Fact: Car Insurance is more expensive for red cars. This is a persistent one that just doesn’t seem to go away. It probably comes from the belief that red cars are flashier and more noticeable and thus more likely to get attention from the police. This usually come us in the context of a wife chiding her husband about how expensive the insurance on their new car is followed with “Imagine if he got the red one he wanted.” I usually just nod my head in sympathy with the husband so as not to spoil the

moment. The reality is that insurance companies rarely even ask for color when rating a policy so you can mark this one as false. Myth or Fact: Jennifer Lopez’s derriere is insured by Lloyds of London. I love these kinds of stories because they open up all kinds of deep follow up questions. The whole body-part insurance idea is believed to have started during WW2 as a publicity stunt when pinup girl Betty Grable’s legs were insured for the then-unheard of sum of one million dollars. Although discretion is important to all the parties involved, rumors and whispers through the years have suggested that famous noses, faces, teeth and who knows what, have all been covered. Sounds simple enough, right? Not quite. The clever people who run insurance companies must first carefully define exactly what has to happen in order for them to pay out. Next, a claim or proof of loss must be filed with pictures and other evidentiary data. And finally, the damaged property must be examined to determine the scope of loss; you get the idea. So, hats

If you’re the type of person who feels uncomfortable with the possibility of being kidnapped by aliens, well fret no more. If beings from another world decide that you are the specimen from earth that they wish to collect, then rest assured that there’s someone out there who is willing to take your money. Ok hold on, there are

some catches of course. First, you need to be returned to earth to file a claim as I am pretty sure that there aren’t any extra-terrestrial claim offices. In other words, if giant aliens accidentally drop or break you in half while clumsily conducting experiments, then you’re out of luck since you won’t be around to file the claim anyway. Furthermore, and I am not making this up, according to the contract you need at least one of the abducting aliens to corroborate the details. Good luck with that. I personally hate to do paperwork so what makes you think that advanced lifeforms would? As an insurance professional, I recognize that there is a very low probability that aliens will abduct, then return you intact and agree to fill out forms. I have found my truth by listening to the inner knowing. Faith in humanity and a higher source. Breathing in, I know this moment is precious, breathing out, I choose to be here now. This moment, this divine grace. Take time to set your intentions and be free from worry. What exactly do you want from this life? These are some questions I have asked myself in the extended quarantine. The answers are coming slowly. I want to live a life well lived and be loved.

A Ferry Staycation to Astoria By Sean Boyle

It has been an interesting few months, to say the least. One couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be blamed for relating to or perhaps finding themselves singing along to I Want To Break Free by Queen, the next time it inevitably plays on Q104.3. Fortunately, escaping seems a little less impossible than lately. As the city enters Phase 2, the staycation day trip has become option for those wanting to take a break from Netflix. The Rockaway Ferry is a perfect solution for those wanting to get out for the day and take a break from the peninsula. Not that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anything wrong with the peninsula! But if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been forced to stay here, you might think about a one-day escape. After docking at Pier 11 in downtown Manhattan transfers are available to routes throughout the city. The Astoria line is particularly interesting for those wanting to see a variety of loca-

tions. After launching from Pier 11, stops include the Brooklyn Navy Yard, East 34th Street, Long Island City, Roosevelt Island, with the final stop in Astoria. If you decide to stay on the ferry for the full trek, it is only about a

45-minute trip from Pier 11 until its final stop. Along the way, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re treated to fantastic views and you can truly appreciate the magnificent skylines. The United Nations, East River bridges, Roosevelt Island and the famous Pepsi sign in Long Island City are just some of the sites to enjoy. Once there, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s less than a 10-minute walk to Astoria Park, which is located on the waterfront and overlooked by the RFK Bridge. The park is situated along the East River, giving anyone a nice view of Randallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Island and Harlem. Continuing down Ditmars Boulevard there are a variety of take-out options, Roseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and Joeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bakery is a local favorite and worth a stop for a treat. Also, for any thirsty traveler, a number of watering holes are clustered along Ditmars Boulevard. You can choose among Jack Jones Astoria, Vintage, and The Ditty or choose all three. Exploring Astoria is an easy day trip and the ferry ride gives you the option to make detours at any of the stops along the route. While planning, it is important to note that currently all NYC ferries are only operating at fifty percent capacity due to Covid-19. If the crowd on the ferry is light, a mask does not need to be worn for the duration of the journey. However, if social distancing is unable to occur, you will be asked by the ferryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crew to refrain from taking off your face covering. Even a face covering wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mask the enjoyment of one-day staycation on the ferry!

Later, the other white man is heard saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;f*** you fag**tâ&#x20AC;? to an officer or passerby. The men are asked to leave the boardwalk, and it appears they were going to, until the situation escalated. The three men approached the officers and Bellevue is seen picking up a plastic bag with cans. He then appears to reach down next to a garbage can as he asks the officers, â&#x20AC;&#x153;You scared?â&#x20AC;? At this point, one of the white men says to him, â&#x20AC;&#x153;what the f** are you doing?â&#x20AC;? and the officers launch toward Bellevue to arrest him. As the body cam falls, the view of the chokehold cannot be seen on police cameras. However, within a few seconds, an officer is seen standing Bellevue up, and walking him to a nearby police

vehicle. Bellevue was speaking to the officers and explained that he is bipolar. As crowds gathered, asking why Bellevue was being arrested but not the other two white men on the boardwalk, Officer Afanador explained to a woman, what led to the arrest. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were all acting crazy, right? Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all obviously intoxicated. We know he has a mental history past. We know heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bipolar. They were all talking all types of crazy stuff to us. We did nothing. Anyone can say what they want to us,â&#x20AC;? Officer Afanador explains. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What changed everything was when he grabbed something and squared up and was going to hit my officer whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s standing over there. The minute I saw him flex on him, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when he goes down because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get hurt and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not going to leave someone violent out here who might do that to you or someone else. The other two are being loud, aggressive and we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t like the way theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re acting but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not acting like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to hurt any-

body or us, so as long as they leave, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s alright.â&#x20AC;? The footage ends with Bellevue being seated in an ambulance so he could be transported to a hospital to be evaluated. He was later released on Monday. On Monday, Commissioner Shea explained that the body camera video shows a broader story, but he stands by his action of suspending the officer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think it tells a very different story than the initial video, but ultimately, a hand around the neck is a hand around the neck,â&#x20AC;? Shea told NY1. He later tweeted, saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have an obligation to always act swiftly, and also to get it right â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and we did. Looking at the broader story from yesterdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s video, I feel for the officers and what they had to endure, and for all the community members who had to pass these three men.â&#x20AC;? In response to the incident, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;There must be zero tolerance for police misconduct.â&#x20AC;? According to a New York Daily News article, Katz decided not to charge Bel-

levue, who faced possible disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest charges. It is not clear if Officer Afanador will face any charges. However, on Monday, a group of protestors demonstrated outside of Queens Borough Hall, calling for the arrest of Officer Afanador. Queens Defendersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; executive director, Lori Zeno, who is also representing Bellevue as his lawyer, is also demanding more action. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is important that we keep holding police officers accountable for their actions. The officer involved here used a chokehold to strangle my client until he was unconscious, because according to the officer, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;he was being disorderly.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; The officer needs to be fired and prosecuted. He was the one who committed a crime in this circumstance. We will not stop until the people of the Rockaways can feel safe as they travel through their own neighborhood,â&#x20AC;? Zeno said in a statement on Monday. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Serves: 4 Ingredients 4 Chicken thighs 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil 1 Large Onion 4-6 Potatoes, cubed 2 Teaspoons Salt 2 Teaspoons Garlic Powder 2 Teaspoon Onion Powder 2 Teaspoons Paprika 2 Teaspoons Italian Seasoning 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper Instructions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup and set aside. Cut onion and potatoes. Put

Arrange the chicken thighs on prepared baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil rubbing the oil into the chicken to coat. In a small bowl, mix together the salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Sprinkle the spices over the chicken evenly. Bake chicken in preheated oven for 35-45 minutes.Chicken is cooked when it reaches 165 degrees.

Rockaway Celebrates Pride From Bay to Beach Story and Photos By Katie McFadden

June marks LGBTQ Pride month, and while New York City’s largescale Pride celebration may have been canceled this year, on Saturday, June 20, LGBTQ Pride was out in full force from the bay to the beach in Rockaway. Justin Harter, owner of ice pop company Citysticks, helped organize this all-day celebration of Rockaway Pride. The day kicked off at the Rockaway Beach Brewing Co. with music by DJs and performances by drag queens, including Rockaway’s own Ginger Ladd. “This has been an extraordinary time in all of our lives,” Ginger Ladd said after her performance. “I appreciate all of you and your activism. We had very little opportunity to celebrate Pride this year. We’re very fortunate to have Rockaway Brewing Company do this.”

The event was live-streamed on Zoom for those who wanted to celebrate virtually. Those in attendance at the Rockaway Brewing Co. were able to grab some bites like tacos from the Brewing Company’s new food stop, Brewery Food and Citysticks ice treats, plus beer, including Rockaway Brewing Co.’s newly released Blush Hibiscus Wit beer cans. Ten percent of all sales of this beer were donated to The Okra Project to support the work they do for the black trans and LGBTQ community as a whole. With sales and donations, Rockaway Brewing Co. was able to donate $400 to this organization. After everyone was well-fed and entertained, they continued the celebration on the beach from Beach 69th to Beach 72nd Street, where groups marked their sixfoot socially distanced spots, stuck Pride flags in the sand, and flew them high and proud above them on a kite.

Fireworks For All Boroughs Planned Although illegal fireworks have plagued neighborhoods in recent weeks, the City is planning some surprise pyrotechnics. Mayor de Blasio and Macy’s announced a fireworks plan in celebration of the 4th of July that will reach every borough for the first time ever. From June 29 to July 1 and on the 4th of July, a series of fireworks displays will launch from various land and water-based locations across New York City. The actual sites won’t be disclosed in advance and the displays will be short because officials do not want crowds gathering. “This 4th of July Celebration with Macy’s will give all New Yorkers a safe and exciting way to enjoy the holiday together, even when we are apart,” de Blasio said.

Susan Tercero, Executive Producer Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks said, “These fiveminute surprise displays will showcase Macy’s signature pyrotechnic design and scale, while encouraging spectators to continue following safety and social distancing measures. The multiple location spectacle will culminate with a full-scale television presentation of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, capturing the spirit of the city for all New Yorkers and the nation to enjoy, choreographed to a rousing score, and featuring the nation’s best musical performances.” With heights reaching up to 1,000 feet from some firing locations, staying close to home and following social distancing guidelines is the best way to enjoy the show, the mayor added.
