PHOTO CONTEST WINNER SELECTED THIS SUNDAY By Katie McFadden
The end is near. From more than 1,000 photos submitted to the 2nd Annual Rockaway Times Photo Expo, just one will take the top $500 prize on Sunday, July 2. This year’s photo contest has been a big hit. The contest opened in February and closed in mid-April. We received more than 1,000 photos, which were narrowed down to just 30 by three judges in the first round of judging. Since Memorial Day weekend, those 30 photos have decorated the boardwalk from Beach 17th to Riis Park, with the help of the Parks Department. Earlier this month, the public had opportunities to vote on their favorites. We’re now down to 15 finalists. And on Sunday, July 2, at 10 a.m. at Beach 106th concession Caracas, the grand prize winner will be chosen by judges. The first place winner will receive $500 and front page glory in The Rock-

away Times. The second and third place winners will receive an Admiral Pass for Hornblower NY’s brunch or dinner cruises. All of the finalists will also be entered into a raffle for a 30-day NYC Ferry pass. There will also be a beach ball, sunglasses and a NYC Ferry water bottle for a runner up. The Rockaway ferry is being used—a lot. This has led to long waits, and some even getting left behind at the dock. What is being done to address these issues? Last weekend, American Princess Cruises was spotted at the Beach 108th dock. According to an NYC Ferry spokesperson, “To accommodate the mass demand on the Rockaway Route last weekend, which usually has two to three vessels, we had five vessels total to transport beachgoers as the other boats reached capacity. Across all three routes, there were 11 NYC Ferry boats and three chartered vessels: two from NY Waterway and one American Princess.” Even so, wait times were still problematic. The number of ferry riders increased across the city last weekend, making it the biggest travel weekend yet. There were 10,3000 riders on the Rockaway route, com-

pared to 8,000, the weekend of June 10, which was the previous high. A New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) press release stated last week that three new boats, built to accommodate 250 riders rather than the current 149, would be added to the fleet. We reached out to the NYCEDC to find out when, and if any of these boats would be used in Rockaway. A spokes-person said the boats will ar-rive sometime next year, and it was unclear if they would be used in Rockaway, as the spokesperson was unsure if they were “seafaring vessels” that could handle the ocean. NYCEDC also said that ac-tions are being taken to ac-commodate those who board the Rockaway-bound boat at Sunset Park. NYC Ferry has started to hold some seats at Pier 11, during peak travel times on weekends so the stop in Brooklyn can be made to pick up passengers there.

Strength in Numbers at the Walk for the Shore II Rally “What do we want? Groins! When do we want them? Now!” That was just one of many chants heard along the beach on Sunday, June 25, when hundreds gathered at Beach 87th and Beach 140th Streets to demand immediate action from
the Army Corps of Engineers regarding beach protection. John Cori and Eddy Pastore of Friends of Rockaway Beach organized the successful event after clear evidence had shown that our beaches, specifically those without jetties, or groins, are getting smaller and smaller, and nearly five years since Hurricane Sandy, the beaches are still not well protected. There was a strong showing from local residents at both rally locations, with some even making the walk from Beach 87th to Beach 140th. Councilman Eric Ulrich was on hand to show his support and speak to his constituents. Organizers hope that the rally will send a clear message to the Army Corps of Engineers and that the time for studies is over and action is overdue. Photos by Katie McFadden and Joe Lupo.

J Words For $600 A young friend and a former, mild-mannered reporter for a not-so major metropolitan newspaper appeared on the TV show “Jeopardy!” a couple weeks back. I knew he had brains but had no idea how much crap, er, trivia, was in his head, too. He was crushing it halfway through the second round. Now, of course, you watch “Jeopardy!” mostly to feel superior the odd time you know an answer before the contestant buzzes in. Or, best of all, you nail your own Daily Double, that’s when you know the answer and nobody on the show does. You say pffff or ha, these idiots. But I did not take great joy or burst with disdain when my guy, who was on a roll, suddenly swung and missed on an easy one. At least I
thought it was a piece of cake at the time. Ok, you wanna play? Got your hand on the buzzer? The category was “J” Words – words that begin with the letter J. My guy says, Alex give me J Words for $600. Alex reads the answer: “One theory derives this word from the name of a Mexican town where many used, dilapidated American cars were sent.” And the answerer is? (Don’t forget — in the form of a question!). If you said, “What is Juarez?” like my guy, you lose 6 million pesos. The answer, of course, is jalopy. And if you’re over the age of 40 you probably got that one right. In fact, you’ve probably owned a jalopy or two. My guy’s answer really spoke to his youth rather than lack of knowledge. I spoke to him after the show aired and he said he still never heard of a jalopy and was just grateful he didn’t blurt out “jalapeno.”
A few weeks back I mentioned a couple of cars of mine that could qualify for the Jalopy Hall Of Disaster. My lemons brought back some memories for readers from the good old days – the days when your greatest hope wasn’t to play in the Major Leagues or become President. Your greatest hope was your car would start. One guy told me his friend had a car that would only turn right. They'd have to figure out a course, to get where they were going, only making right turns. When I relayed this tale to another friend she asked if the car could only make right turns or was it the driver? She added she still doesn’t like left turns, herself. One family owned a Delta 88. “It was like a Delta 12” by the time we were through with it, a buddy said. They had to replace door panels and the hood and didn’t care that the colors didn’t match.
“By the end, we were calling it The Quilt.” Another guy owned a car with no reverse gear. Everything was cool except when it came to parallel parking. And, of course, there were plenty of people who told me they painted their car with house paint. You could see the brush strokes. It was a classy era. Everybody had a car story. A now long-married couple told me about the time they went to a concert and came out to find their car gone from the big parking lot. They called the cops to report it stolen and described the dented yellow Pinto with a green door and said it had a bad clutch and you had to push it to get started. The cop said, your car’s not stolen. Keep looking. Kinda funny that my young “Jeopardy!” friend lost $600 on Japoly – that was way more than we spent on some of ours.

***** Ok, so you’re not supposed to call 911 unless it’s an emergency. Better to call the precinct, right? Well, that doesn’t seem to do much good with the 100th Precinct. Readers have told us that the 100th Precinct doesn’t pick up the phone. We gave it a test last week. Three calls, no answer. We tried again three times on Tuesday (and double checked the number, 718-318-4200): no answer. We went to Twitter and asked @NYPD100Pct if the phones were working because no one was picking up. Their answer: the phones are working. We wrote back and asked- ok, does anyone pick up? After a long wait, we got a yes. Well, we tried again Wednesday: no answer. We hope this is rectified soon. Residents should be able to get a response to quality of life calls and other matters.
THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2017 ***** We heard some 800 people were waiting at Pier 11 to get on the ferry to Rockaway on Sunday. That’s about 650 more than can fit on the ferry. The New York Times had a positive article with nice mentions of the new beer garden, Liquid Bread at Community House, and Tracy Obolsky’s Rockaway Beach Bakery and the sculpture exhibit along Shore Front Parkway. And the article mentioned the great new ferry service. That article, no doubt, caused an uptick in Rockaway-bound day trippers. ***** Advertiser alert. Next week is a screwy work week. The Rockaway Times will be in on Monday ‘til noon. Closed on Tuesday, the 4th. Open on Wednesday. Please have your ad ready by Monday or first thing Wednesday for the July 6 issue. Thanks! ***** In case you missed it, the Community Board rejected the proposal of the FDNY to acquire the vacant HSBC Bank at 116th Street and Beach Channel Drive and move the 116th Street firehouse
to that location. As part of the ULURP process, the issue goes before the Borough President who makes a recommendation after a public hearing. BPs often base recommendations on the wishes of the Community Board. Such a recommendation, pro or con, will come within 30 days of a hearing. The Community Board suggested the National Grid lot on Beach 110th Street and Beach Channel Drive would make more sense. One resident suggested the 100th Precinct and the firehouse on 116th be relocated to that spot. ***** St. Camillus is establishing the Monsignor William Burke Memorial Fund, a scholarship for a current student who demonstrates a love of music and the values of love, respect, loyalty and faith. To support the scholarship, the Board is sponsoring a 50/50 raffle on Sunday, July 9 after the 11:30 a.m. mass. Tickets are also available at the rectory. ***** The Sandbar, or what remains of the old bar at the boardwalk

We say an eyesore is an eyesore. ***** The winner of The Rockaway Times Photo contest will be selected on Sunday, July 2. We’ll have the lucky winner on the front page July 6. ***** Glad to see so many concerned citizens turn out for the beach (we want jetties now) rallies last week. All other issues pale in comparison to the importance of beach protection. There won’t be much to say about parking, dog crap, bike lanes, and ferries if Rockaway doesn’t get the protection it needs. The molasses-like movement of the Army Corps of Engineers is inexcusable.

St. Francis to Welcome Father Bill as New Pastor

Starting Friday, June 30, a new priest will be in charge at St. Francis de Sales church. But he’s not new at all. Father William Sweeney, better known as Father Bill, has been a priest for 36 years and has been bringing smiles to the parishioners of the Belle Harbor church for more than a year, but he’ll soon become Pastor as the beloved Monsignor John Bracken moves on to serve other local parishioners. Since January 2016, St. Francis de Sales churchgoers have gotten to know Father Bill for his tendency to make them laugh. “Every Mass, I like to start off with a joke to get people’s attention,” Father Bill said. And it seems to do the trick. “I’ve been doing it for 36 years as a priest and it’s gone over pretty well so far.”

but I didn’t report until March because I fell and fractured my ankle and broke my leg,” Father Bill said, recalling a serious accident, but immediately made light of the situa-
tion. “Now I can tell when the weather is going to change,” he joked, much like he did on his first day at St. Francis. “I have a plate with three screws in my leg and on my first day here, during Mass, I said, ‘Sometimes people say priests have a screw loose. I can prove it, I have three!’” he said. “It’s always a good way of getting people to relax, when you start making fun of yourself.” Father Bill, along with Father Jim Cunningham and Monsignor Bracken, have all found their own ways to make their parishioners comfortable. And it works. Father Bill says he won’t have much work to do when Monsignor Bracken leaves. “One of the great things about St. Francis is that it’s working. He’s always made church feel like home. This is your home. This is your place. There’s no excluding anybody. Everybody is a part of our family. Our goal is just to make people feel welcome,” Father Bill said. Msgr. Bracken, who just celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination, won’t be going far. He’ll be saying Masses at St. Genevieve’s Church down in Roxbury. “It’s bittersweet because Monsignor is leaving and he’s been the rock that has been holding this place together. It’s been a pleasure working with him. He offered to give the keys back, and I said, ‘You're welcome here any time.’ St. Francis was his first assignment for ten years, and he came back three years ago to help down here after Sandy. This has always been his home,” Father Bill said. As for Father Bill, his first home was Astoria. “I was born on Rosh Hashanah. The Jewish doctor said I ruined his celebration. I arrived early,” Father Bill joked. He lived with his parents, two brothers and sister. Father Bill says he never intended to be a priest. “I went to Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst and you usually go there if you were thinking of becoming a priest. I only went there because I didn’t get into any other Catholic high school and my parents wouldn’t let me go to public school. But while I was there I was introduced to a lot of nice, hard-working guys who had a love for the Lord and wanted to help people and help me during my teenage years. So I went on to a minor seminary for college and I was there for four years, but I was still dating at the time and wasn’t sure if I wanted to do this. I went on to a major seminary and the spiritual director was very good and he helped me decide,” he said. Father Bill was ordained by Bishop Mugavero
THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2017 in May 1981. “Now 36 years later, I’m still happy with what I’m doing,” he said. Father Bill’s first assignment was Holy Family in Flushing, where he was for seven years. It was in 1988 when Rockaway first got to know Father Bill. He was at St. Camillus from June 1988 until October 1997. While there, he was named Chaplain of Stella Maris High School. In 1997, he was moved to St. Francis Prep High School, where he worked until January 2016. “I joke that I’m the slowest priest in the diocese because it takes me 19 years to get out of high school,” he said. In between that time at St. Francis Prep, Father Bill was also named pastor of St. Catherine of Sienna in St. Albans, where Al Roker, who Father Bill calls “very generous,” was one of his parishioners. Father Bill, a huge Mets fan, also got to spend some time saying Sunday Mass at Citifield before games. After leaving St. Francis Prep, Father Bill found himself at another St. Francis, and he says he plans on staying. “The bishop said I can retire from St. Francis de Sales. I have 15 years before I want to retire, so I plan on being here for a while. I have sand in my shoes,” he said. On Friday, June 30, at 9 a.m., there will be a Mass to say farewell to Msgr. Bracken, to welcome Father Bill into his new position, and to welcome the newest priest at St. Francis, Father Patrick Burns. Despite starting his position as pastor on Friday, Father Bill’s official installation won’t be until October 29. “I know that it’s summertime and I don’t want to drag people off the beach in the summer. So I decided to push it off until October. October 29, the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, was an option. I was a little hesitant to do it then, as it’s almost a solemn day, but Monsignor Bracken and Father Jim and some in the parish said it would be a great idea. It’s symbolic. It shows that St. Francis is going to continue and it’s a celebration of the great work that’s been done and it’s a great excuse to get the whole parish together for a party,” he said.

FDNY to Battle Birmingham in Epic Boxing Showdown (And Local Grudge Matches, Too) By Katie McFadden
In 1776, America declared independence from Great Britain. On July 4, we’ll celebrate that anniversary with BBQs and fireworks. But on July 7, America will battle the Brits once again, but this time they’re taking it to the ring. FDNY Bravest Boxing and the West Midlands Fire Service of Birmingham, England will be making fireworks of their own at the Thrilla in Camilla boxing event. On Friday, July 7, at 6 p.m. the gates will open at the St. Camillus (99-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) parking lot as spectators pour in to catch the first bout at 7 p.m. sharp. The night will be jampacked with grudge matches between each team, plus a special match between two FDNY Rockaway locals. The program includes three preliminary bouts, and eight grudge matches between welterweight, cruiserweight, heavyweight and super heavyweight contenders from FDNY and West Midlands. There’s also a special matchup. Jimmy Frontera of Ladder 113 and Thomas McVeigh of Ladder 153, both from Rockaway, have been training for months just for this showdown. “This is a match that Rockaway people are going to want to see,” event organizer and FDNY Bravest Boxing President Bobby McGuire said. The fighters are battling it out in the ring, all for a great cause. Tickets are $25 for general admission or $50 for VIP ringside seats, plus there will be a 50/50 raffle all to raise money for Building Homes for Heroes (BHFH). The firefighting men and women who serve their city will be giving their all in honor of those who serve their country. BHFH has changed hundreds of lives by building or modifying homes, and gifting them,
mortgage-free, to injured veterans and their families. One of these heroes will be present at next Friday’s event. On June 21, 2004, US Army Specialist Hugo Gonzalez was severely injured in combat in Baqubah, Iraq. His vehicle took a direct hit from an improvised explosive device (IED) and a furious gun battle broke out with insurgents. Specialist Gonzalez suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was taken to the base camp where he was placed in a medically-induced coma, and had a piece of bone from his cranium removed to relieve the pressure of the swelling of his brain. He also suffered internal bleeding, a sinus bone fracture, a crushed optic nerve (right eye) and a hole in the left retina. He is now legally blind. SPC Gonzalez also now requires long-term therapy with anti-epileptic medications. SPC Gonzalez and his family will be receiving a home in Port St. Lucie, Florida. FDNY Bravest Boxing has been hosting events to benefit BHFH for about five years and has raised more than $100,000 for the charity. “Ninety-six perfect of the money we receive goes right toward the cause,” McGuire said. FDNY Bravest Boxing has been boxing for charity ever since they started in 1982. Their team motto is “We’ll fight anyone,…anywhere,…anytime…as long as its for a good cause.” The team members volunteer and don’t get paid or special time off from work to compete.

McGuire serves as the president of the organization. He boxed in more than 50 matches for FDNY before retiring from boxing in 1991. The head trainer for the team is Mike Reno, who also has more than 50 matches under his belt. He trains team members who range in skill levels, with some entering the ring for their first match next Friday, to others who have been fighting for years. The team faces off against firefighters, law enforcement and other teams from all over the state, country and even world, which is how this matchup against Birmingham came to be. It's the first time the West Midlands Fire Service will be in America, but it’s not their first matchup against the FDNY. “Last year, we went overseas and fought them for the transatlantic champi-
onship. Right now, we own the belt, and they’ll be trying to win it back on Friday,” McGuire said. Welcome The Warriors Next Thursday! The Warriors are coming! Next Thursday, July 6, the veterans of the Hope for the Warriors program will be coming for a funfilled weekend by the beach. Hope for the Warriors will be hosting a weekend full of activities for wounded military members. The weekend starts with a welcome parade on Thursday, June 6, just after 6 p.m. Residents are encouraged to line Rockaway Beach Boulevard, from Beach 149th to Beach 120th, to cheer on the warriors. Bring your flags and high spirits! After they pass through Rockaway, they’ll be heading toward Roxbury and up State Road to Breezy Point for a lap around the ball field. On Friday and Saturday, the warriors will enjoy beach activities and a surf clinic with AMP Surf, A-Team Paddle Boarding and Deirdre Roberts, from 9 a.m. to noon on Beach 219th Street in Breezy Point. Friday, July 7 at 6 p.m., there will be a dinner cruise out of Sheepshead Bay on the Stars of New York. Tickets can be purchased for $40 where t-shirts will be sold. Shirts will be sold in front of the stores in Breezy Point on weekends and holidays, as well as at Wednesday night volleyball. During the parade on July 6, shirts will be sold at the corner of Beach 129th and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The program will come to an end on Sunday. On July 9 at 10 a.m., there will be an outdoor Mass for the warriors at the Breezy Point 9/11 Memorial. Refreshments will be provided by the Breezy Point Co-op.

Dear Editor: On Sunday, June 25, Friends of Rockaway Beach, Belle Harbor and Neponsit Property Owners’ Associations, organized two demonstrations on Beach 87th and 140th Streets, respectively, the purpose of which was to bring attention to the fact that Rockaway Beach continues to experience severe erosion, especially where jetties are missing, and is still extremely vulnerable to future storms, requiring federal, state and city elected officials to LISTEN to their tax-paying constituents who reside in the Rockaways, most of whom feel their representatives have either chosen to ignore the issue until another disastrous storm occurs, or they just don’t realize the urgency to get the job done!
Homeowners are frightened that the tens of thousands of dollars spent to rebuild their homes will soon be considered “wasted.” The lack of effective resiliency measures is evident. Elected officials had stated YEARS ago, right after the storm, something needs to be done if the peninsula is to be fully protected. “Rock Jetties are needed!” Where are they? “Reinforced Dunes are a must!” Where are they? “Artificial reefs should be considered!” Where are they? “More sand?” Where is it? How much longer do we have to wait for adequate protection? While I realize the demonstration was organized quickly, I am disappointed that some NYC Council Members on the Parks and Resiliency Committees, who were invited, were not in attendance. Hopefully they realize how important this issue is, not only for residents, but to the millions of yearly visitors. I must take this opportunity to thank Kevin Forrestal, president of Queens Civic
The Rockaway Times Congress, an umbrella organization of over 110 civic organizations, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for its members in Queens County, and for vowing to support the erection of effective measures designed to improve Rockaway Beach’s resiliency. Finally, I pray that Mayor de Blasio, who has taken the new ferry to Rockaway and walked on our beautifully built boardwalk, realizes that the time is NOW for him to come to Rockaway a third time for the SOLE purpose of walking the beach with John Cori, Eddy Pastore, Amanda Agoglia and Hank Iori to see for himself the urgency for immediate implementation of effective resiliency measures. Once he sees the shoreline, I am certain he will agree that all “left over” FEMA funds, given to NYC, be allocated strictly for Rockaway’s protection from future storms. Barbara S. Hit & Don’t Run Dear Editor: There was a Hit & Run on Saturday, June 24 during the early morning hours around 4 a.m. at 126-02 Newport Ave. The driver fled in a dark SUV before NYPD arrived at the scene. John Kaleta Dear Editor: Early Saturday morning at about 4:00 AM a supposed black SUV jumped the curb at the northwest corner of Newport Ave and Beach 126th Street and plowed into the fence surrounding the front lawn of the property. The damage to the vinyl fence was substantial but the driver decided it was in his own irresponsible best interest to flee the scene, leaving the homeowner with the headache and financial burden of replacing the fence and a flagpole. Luckily the vehicle didn't hit

About three to four weeks prior to this incident, a car parked on the north side of Newport Ave and Beach 126th Street was struck by another vehicle late at night and again the irresponsible driver left the scene. The damage to the rear of the parked car was substantial, appearing to leave the vehicle a total loss, again leaving the owner with a financial burden and unable to use it. Of course there could be different reasons why these two incidents happened but if the drivers were alert and responsible, this wouldn't have occurred. I've lived on Newport Ave for many years and one thing I can say is that at times, late at night, some cars are ripping along the avenue at 50-60 miles an hour maybe even a little faster. The Best of Times and the Worst of Times By Sarah Arikian
June is a month where a lot seems to happen in my family, and this year is no exception. It started well this year, as I celebrated 12 months without an alcoholic drink, which in some ways was less challenging than I expected because I have friends taking this adventure along
with me, and it was so nice to feel healthy, clear-headed and full of energy. Even at dawn! I have really enjoyed some beautiful sunrises over the ocean, which is absolutely the best way to start the day. Then I went on the vacation of a lifetime, a National Geographic expedition with my younger daughter to the Galapagos Is-

lands, way out in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador. It was number one on my bucket list (yes, I’ve decided it’s time to get going on that!) and our days were filled from dawn to dusk, which is equal in length on the equator, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with hikes and snorkeling and talks from the naturalists on board and photography lessons and interesting chats with fellow travelers from all over the world. There are many islands that make up the Galapagos, all volcanic, and it is all national parkland, and access is strictly limited. I was happy to hear this because I didn’t like to think of inquisitive tourists like myself making a negative impact on the unspoiled islands. We trekked in groups of six or eight and always with a naturalist, wrapped in layers of protective clothing, including floppy hats, sunglasses and gloves, to protect against the strong UV rays. Albatrosses and frigate birds were courting and their bizarre dances and bright plumage were in full force for us to
enjoy, and they had no fear of humans. This was amazing! We had to keep a two-meter distance, but sometimes they came closer to inspect and preen and we sat quietly to take it all in. Iguanas, sea lions and birds alike were completely
unafraid of humans. The blue footed boobies courted us and tapped towards us with their attractive feet as if to say “Look at me, I eat so well my feet turn Continued on page 17

blue and I’d be a great provider for your family.” The albatrosses in pairs weaved their heads, clacked beaks and pointed them skyward with a shriek in their wonderful, elaborate dance. We swam with sea lions, and sharks, off reefs that dropped 100 feet into the turquoise waters and were exquisitely clear, with hundreds of parrot fish and barracuda moving beneath us and the occasional Galapagos penguin zooming by like a bullet underwater. Tourist money helps to fund the Charles Darwin Research Facility on the Island of Santa Cruz, and it was a dream to sit among the Giant Tortoises and watch them mash ripe guavas as they trundled over the territory. The air smelled of guava and incense from the Palo Santo trees. My daughter, goes away at college so I don’t get to see her that often. When she’s home she’s always surrounded by her Rockaway buddies. She and I talked under the full moon as we crossed the equator for the first time and gazed up at the Southern Cross about the endless variety of mother nature, and the joys of being able to take this trip together, and everything in between! I am so grateful for this incredibly precious time. We came home on June 11 and our family dog, the magnificent Montague, our nine- yearold golden retriever, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer of the spleen on the day that we left for the Galapagos, had taken a turn for the worse. Monty was the best of dogs, with a golden heart and a sweet, loving disposition that made people stop and smile and put their hands out for a quick stroke. As a puppy he used to dive into the pool with complete abandon, and create a huge splash. He and I would have swim races, where I would cheat and still often not get to the ball first. My kids grew up with him and we competed for who would get to hug him at night. I’ve heard him described as a gentleman, a humble, noble and serious creature, who al-
THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 2017 ways seemed to know if someone needed comfort or support because he would lay his big, blonde head on your lap and just be there for you. On Tuesday, friends came to visit to hear about my trip and between tales of fish and fowl, they sat with him and breathed with him. He even received a massage! The following day his breathing had worsened and his abdomen had swollen and we had to take him to Rockaway Beach Veterinary Services where Dr. Hollander and his staff helped us, with kindness and dignity, and we had to say goodbye to our dear friend. There is a lot of beauty to this story, as well as pain. I give thanks for the life Monty led and the happiness he brought us, and although he passed away too young, he brought a lot of joy into the world. I came upon this quote from an interview with the poet Mary Oliver, which spoke to me: “And now my old dog is dead, and another I had after him, and my parents are dead, and that first world, that old house, is sold and lost, and the books I gathered there lost, or sold — but more books bought, and in another place, board by board and stone by stone, like a house, a true life built, and all because I was steadfast about one or two things: loving foxes, and poems, the blank piece of paper, and my own energy — and mostly the shimmering shoulders of the world that shrug carelessly over the fate of any individual that they may, the better, keep the Niles and the Amazons flowing. And that I did not give to anyone the responsibility for my life. It is mine. I made it. And can do what I want to with it. Live it. Give it back, someday, without bitterness, to the wild and weedy dunes.” June has shown me the best of times and the worst of times and the important thing is to live it. Here and now. Just today I heard the joyful news that my friend Catherine is expecting a baby. Experience the grief as well as the joy and the world continues to spin, and as Louis Armstrong sang “It’s a Wonderful World.”

The Rockaway Times Directions: Preheat broiler with oven rack in upper middle position. Combine the first four ingredients in a medium bowl. Divide and shape turkey mixture into eight (2”) patties. Arrange patties on a baking sheet. Broil 2-3 minutes each side or until done. Combine coleslaw, apple, mayonnaise, and juice in a bowl. Divide cucumber slices over bottom halves of buns. Top evenly with turkey burgers, coleslaw mixture, and top halves of buns.

Cardiovascular Disease Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a huge burden on global health despite decades of focused research and intervention. Multiple large studies have demonstrated that low HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels and high LDL (“bad cholesterol”) levels are both strongly associated with an increased risk of CVD. One large study showed that there was a five to six percent reduction in vascular events for every 10 mg/dl decrease in LDL. It is on the basis of this and other studies that major international cardiology and lipid associations recommend statins (Lipitor, Crestor, etc.) as first line treat-
ment for treating elevated lipid levels (aka dyslipidemia) as a risk factor for CVD. However, as there is considerable variation in people’s responses to statins, other non-statin medications are also recommended by current guidelines. A number of studies have shown an inverse relationship between HDL levels and CVD. Therefore targeting raising HDL levels has been proposed as a means of reducing CVD risk. The problem is that statins, while they lower total cholesterol and LDL levels, do not raise HDL levels. A low-fat diet and proper exercise may elevate HDL a bit, but

there is only one medication that raises HDL levels and that is niacin, aka Vitamin B3. Niacin may lower total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL by small amounts, but its main effect is raising HDL. The main side effect of niacin is skin flushing, or the feeling that your skin is on fire. This relatively common side effect can be lessened or eliminated by taking a non-coated aspirin with the niacin or using a slow-release niacin product like Niaspan. Niacin is also associated with an increased risk of new-onset or worsening diabetes, gastrointestinal distress, and muscle pains and aches. It is interesting to note that a number of studies have shown that despite niacin causing a significant increase in HDL levels, it was not associated with a decreased risk of death, heart attacks, and strokes. This confusing outcome obviously requires more study. It is thought that part of the reason may be that there are a number of subtypes of HDL and perhaps niacin affects a sub-type that is not linked to CVD. The jury is still out
but it is becoming clear that current lipid testing is insufficient to determine the levels of the subtypes of not just HDL, but all the lipids. Research is ongoing to determine how all these sub-types affect the human body. In most cases, lipid levels are primarily determined by a person’s genetic background. Families with early CVD, like strokes and heart attacks at a young age (below 50), often have very low HDL levels (below 20) and very high LDL levels (above 190). Despite there being little evidence that niacin affects mortality and CVD, most practitioners would place people in this category on both a statin and niacin and would perform frequent cardiovascular testing. So if you don’t know what your lipid levels are get tested and start at a young age (below 40) to create a baseline. Assessing your risk of CVD and doing something about it are vital to staying alive longer and staying healthy. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Rockaway Farm Share, One Month In Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s (RWA) Rockaway Farm Share is off to a great start. For the last month, members have converged each week on Wednesdays to pick up their share of organic produce from Rockaway’s own Edgemere Farm and Sang Lee Farms, a seventy-year-old family farm on the North Fork of Long Is-

land. So far, produce has varied; amongst others, members have received zucchini, romaine lettuce, carrots, bok choy, and even strawberries. Each week, members also have a chance to try a sample dish from local Rockaway chef Oprah Davidson as they are picking up their vegetables. Davidson’s weekly recipe features produce from the share to give members ideas of what to do with less well-known items like bok choy and leeks. The farm share gets even more exciting in July when the fruit share begins. Grown at Briermere Farms, also located on Long Island, members can expect a variety of fruits including apples, pears, peaches, plums, and berries. RWA decided to create the farm share to increase access to affordable, organic produce. As part of that mission, RWA led a trip of about 40 people (a mix of members
and potential members) in May to visit both farms on Long Island. At Briermere Farm, the group took a hayride through the orchards and sampled baked goods using the farm’s fruit. At Sang Lee Farms, the group had a delicious organic lunch and walked through the fields. RWA still has a few spots

We Mean Business: Notes from The RBA BUSINESS RESILIENCY: PLANNING FOR YEAR-ROUND BUSINESS STABILITY Presented by Rockaway Business Alliance, NYC Department of Small Business Services, and Great Jamaica Bay Development Corporation, in partnership with Perch Advisors. The Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) represents dozens of businesses in the Rockaways and strives to provide them the tools that they need to thrive, on season and off. We are excited to announce that we will be producing a series of workshops aimed at offering businesses the specific skills they need to navigate the unique challenges of Rockaway geography. Disaster preparedness is a crucial topic for business owners in the Rockaways, but
preparing for the slow season can be equally important. How can Rockaway businesses ride the wave of a seasonal business trend and avoid getting dragged under in the winter months? The RBA is hosting its first business workshop, focusing on the topic of resiliency. We are teaming up with the Greater Jamaica Bay Development Corporation who will provide tips, techniques, and tricks to handling seasonal business cashflow trends and alternatives to traditional financing. The NYC Department of Small Business Services will also speak about emergency planning and preparedness. These business workshops
are free to members and also available to non-members thanks to the support of Avenue NYC and CitiBank. Rockaway is feeling the Burn—Edward Burns. The actor and director has been spotted around town as he films his new coming-of-age film, Summertime. “Set on the south shore of Long Island in the summer of 1983, [Summertime] follows a group of working-class teenagers and 20-somethings as they work their summer jobs, fall in and out of love, and wrestle with what the future holds when the summer ends and the real world beckons,” according to Deadline.com. ing earlier this month around the bungalows at Beach 109th, as well as Beach 121st Street. Some locals have had the opportunity to meet Burns, and even get a cameo in the film. Sarah Kenny met Burns while he was filming at the bungalows on Thursday, June 22 and gave her daughter, Tessa Cooke, an opportunity to be in the film. “He loved my daughter's hair so much he put her in the movie. He and his crew were absolutely wonderful and stayed to have a beer with my mom on her porch!” Kenny said.

The soft breezes finally came after all that rain. The waves tucked in and lengthened across the sand bars allowing the young ones to play in small lagoons formed at the shoreline. The sun got hotter, the sand, what’s left of it, got warmer, and the ocean looked friendlier. Yes, it seems that almost despite Mother Nature, summer has indeed arrived. Families gathering, generations coming together, teenag-
ers showing off, grandmothers sitting with blankets on in the sun. Crinkly noses burned by long days, ruby red sunsets with an occasional dolphin or whale swimming by languidly. These are the days we dream about during those dark dreary winter nights; these are the days that bring us back to what it means to live at the beach. We have new ferries, new boardwalks, new shuttles, all that’s great, but really the opportunity to get up and simply

Maybe there are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and an aunt reminding everyone to wait a half hour before you go in for a swim, God forbid you get a cramp! Someone takes a kayak out, maybe a stand-up paddleboard, the sun starts its slow descent; the breeze feels a little saltier. The clouds part to let the sun find the horizon and in a burst of orange and red disappears behind the deep blues. But it doesn’t get dark yet because the soft glow continues for another hour or two before slowly the parents start to drag their chairs, coolers, umbrellas and finally kids off the beach all to be rinsed down by a
hose that has been warmed by the sun. The grille starts up and hot dogs and hamburgers start flying off immediately into the hands of the youngest red-faced companions. The night breeze is cooler but feels good against the sunburned skin, especially as jokes get funnier and faces get wrinkled up in laughing fits. Stories are exchanged; memories shared, hugs and kisses to relatives who now must make the long trip to the mainland. Climbing into bed the sheets feel electric against the sun and wind-tested skin. Thoughts drift until they become dreams, and you can still feel the waves lifting you up as if you were still out riding the tides. And finally sleep comes, and doesn’t release us until the next morning when that beautiful summer sun greets us again and says to us, yes it’s summer let’s enjoy this time together and create memories to keep us warm and happy during those colder, darker times of the year. Ahh, welcome summer; please stay as long as you like!

PVC Bike Rack Looking for a way to keep the kids bikes from laying all over the yard? Try this PVC Bike Rack, it will hold five bikes. What you’ll need: 4- Lengths of 1 ½ PVC pipe 14- 1 ½ PVC elbows 20- 1 ½ PVC T’s 1- Can of PVC glue Making the cuts: Cut 10 pieces of PVC 3 ½ inches long. Then cut the rest into 12 inch pieces. Connecting everything together: 1- Glue two 12-inch pieces into either end of an elbow making a V. Repeat 10 times. 2- Glue the ends of the V’s you just made into the “T” end of the PVC T’s.
Be sure they are at a 90-degree angle to your elbows to make your “V” stand upright. 3- Standing up one of your V’s, glue a 12-inch piece in to each T, so that they are coming out on the same side. Connect the 12-inch pieces using another 12-inch piece and two elbows. 4- On the other side of your T’s, glue a piece of three-inch PVC. 5- Now glue on a V to the 3 ½ pieces, and glue a 12-inch piece to the open side of the T’s. 6- Repeat steps 4 and 5, four times. 7- To close the end off, repeat step 3 Note: To ensure that you have all your pieces in the proper

You think Councilman Ulrich is a tad bit upset with Mayor Bill de Blasio? At a recent City Council hearing, Ulrich was in rare form as he unloaded on the Mayor's Office of Recovery and Resiliency regarding the city's Build it Back Program as well as plan(s) for a study regarding beach erosion and sand replenishment in the Rockaway area, a program, the details of such, Ulrich very obviously felt the Mayor's Office was not exactly being forthcoming with. "It's almost like we don't exist!...I don't appreciate it when I am ignored or when the Mayor's Office comes to the City Council and tells us that they have a great, grand, master plan and they don't keep anybody in the loop. Very disrespectful. Unappreciated." When the Mayor's Office staff stated that the Councilman had his facts wrong, Ulrich had the last word by stating, "You want to talk about facts, we'll have another hearing on facts
and I'll rip you and the Mayor to shreds - any day, any time! Have a nice day." How's that for a closer? Speaking of Build it Back, that program's track record of bureaucratic inaction, fueled by administrators who have somehow managed to figure out how to cut red tape sideways, has served to bring many a Broad Channel resident to tears while awaiting return to their homes. As bad as Build it Back has been to date for this displaced population of Sandy survivors, they have somehow now actually managed to anger residents of the Channel who are not even involved with the program. Prior to the transition from EIC contractor staff who were working on the new bulkheads and raised streets on West 11th and 12th Road, to contractors from the city’s Build it Back Program back in April of this year, it was made crystal clear to staff from the Mayor’s Office Build it Back operation that there are multiple families who are not part of the Build it Back operation who will continue to reside in their homes on both streets while the work is being done. At that time it was stated that contractors must remain acutely aware of these remaining families and occupied properties and afford them a modicum of courtesy and consideration so as to not inordinately impact their day to day lives (parking, deliveries, street ingress/egress, driveway access, refuse removal, etc.) That being said, immediate-

Active driveways are often times completely blocked... routine sanitation pick- ups have been missed and scheduled; home deliveries cancelled because of contractor street blockage...dumpsters, portable toilets and a myriad of other contractor-related materials have been placed directly in front of residents’ homes...a cable feed was intentionally cut by a contractor, who never notified anyone, effectively killing cable service on the entire west side of 12th Road for more than 50 hours...a resident's private vehicle parked directly in front of the house was struck and damaged by a contractor's excavator with no notice to the owner who was home at the time...many individual contractor’s staff park their personal vehicles in front of occupied properties without a second thought to the fact that they are effectively displacing parking for an occupied home...a central air unit was removed by a contractor from a property on 11th Road and intentionally placed in the pit under the newly-raised house where it sat half submerged in tidal waters until the owner noticed it during a weekend inspection of the property. Recently when talking with some of the contractor staff about the above issues, I was told that perhaps we were all “over-reacting” to the work on the block because, and I quote, "...you guys probably never had to deal with construction activity of this magnitude before." After taking a deep breath I advised this gentleman that, prior to Build
It Back gracing our street with their presence, our residents had already experienced more than two years of significant construction activity with EIC and other contractors constructing new bulkhead at the bay ends, as well as ripping up the entire length of the street for new infrastructure, along with many scheduled water and power outages, and then constructing a newly raised roadbed along the same length of road. I also added that the difference between the EIC/DDC operation and the present Build it Back operation is one of an awareness of and consideration for the residents of the affected streets that their work impacts. EIC/DDC excelled at it, with an on-site and readily available Community Construction Liaison and providing residents with weekly work schedules (including concrete work) and other relevant information, as a means of maintaining solid and continual communication with all street residents. On the other hand, Build it Back appears either unwilling or unable to grasp the above concept and simply goes about their business with various contractors and workers, each doing their own thing. Although Mayor's Office staff has provided us with, on multiple occasions, multiple assurances that they will ensure BIB staff pay closer attention to these issues, one can only be reminded that the definition of insanity is repeating the same actions, over and over again, each time expecting a different result. When (if?) Build It Back ever completes its final elevation and/or rebuild, the program should be buried under some rich soil where it can serve as an inspiration to cabbage patch kids. I believe something similar was done with that other Mayor's Office gem, Rapid Repair, which is buried in a quarry somewhere upstate inspiring newborn pet rocks! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Middle Schooler Digs Deep in Local Resident’s New Book By Kimberly Kelliher
Katherine Blakeney’s new novel, “Digging In The Stars,” is an adventure to prove that the lost don’t stay lost forever. I enjoyed reading this book because of the adventures and thrills the characters experienced. In this book, 16-year-old Carter goes on a mission to find her lost best friend, Conrad, but that is not the only goal she hopes to achieve in her mission. Carter and her archeology class travel to distant planet, Thror, to find Conrad, and in the process she meets a few interesting people. Carter’s second goal in this quest is to find the lost burial place of King Loreval of Thror. On her quest, she is stuck in some sticky situations and finds her group to be a big help to her. She faces danger and sadness, along with a few
unexpected emotions along the way. On her journey she finds that people all around this extraordinary planet are willing to help… or are they? The above book review of new young adult, science-fiction novel, “Digging In The Stars,” was submitted by local Scholars’ Academy 8th grade student, Kimberly Kelliher. “It’s a really interesting book, not just for young adults, but readers of all ages,” she said. A Tale of Two Build it Backs By Kami-Leigh Agard
Arverne residents, Marilyn Samaroo and Stefan Perkins, though complete strangers to each other, have a lot in common. They are both single-family homeowners in the same Rockaway neighborhood, who suffered massive destruction to their homes by Hurricane Sandy, and both signed up for Build It Back NYC to help reconstruct their homes. However, this is where their similarities end. Samaroo and her husband have lived in Far Rockaway for 17 years. Like many Rockaway residents who suffered greatly from Hurricane Sandy, Samaroo did whatever repairs to her house that she could afford — new floors, beams, boilers, hot water heater, electrical system and even hired a contractor with money she received from her insurance company. However, the insurance money was not enough, so like many Rockaway residents, she applied to Build It Back (BIB) for help. On November 15, 2015, she handed her house keys to BIB City-selected contractor, Tishman Construction. While construction was being done, Samaroo and her family temporarily moved and rented an apartment in the area for $2,600 monthly. “Admittedly BIB’s rollout for rent reimbursement and storage was really slow at first. However, I was in constant contact with BIB case workers, Cheryl and Tiffany, who kept on top of everything and regularly communicated when we should expect our reimbursement check for temporary housing assistance and storage,” Samaroo said Then 17 months later, not only did the Samaroos get their keys back, but e-construction of their home was done. “Our home was lifted, and foundation, house siding and roof were all replaced. The excitement and gratitude we felt to be back in our beloved home, which today still feels like a brand new house, is amazing. If another storm hit, I feel that we will be perfectly safe!” Samaroo said.
However for Stefan Perkins and his family, their experience with BIB and Tishman Construction has been completely different. In our June 15 issue, The Rockaway Times first reported about Perkins’ plight with BIB, in the article, “Local 3 Union Workers — Waiting in Vain for Spectrum Strike to End & BIB to Deliver.” For over a year, Perkins and his family have been out of their home and renting in the same Arverne neighborhood temporarily. Perkins, due to his Local 3 Spectrum Union strike, has been out of work, living on his savings and simultaneously paying his mortgage, rent and storage. “The BIB rent reimbursement process is so slow, and I am still waiting for storage reimbursement. I keep calling and waiting. And now with my union’s strike, my family is literally living on our savings,” stated Perkins. However, coincidentally, after RT contacted BIB on Perkins behalf, he excitedly reported good news. After a long hiatus of construction and months of not hearing from Tishman, the construction company called him and resumed work the next day. However, last week, a disappointed Perkins contacted RT again and said that work suddenly stopped without notification. The stall in work could have been due to the monsoon rains last week on the peninsula, and while it’s difficult say why

Tishman stopped working, one thing is for sure. Perkins wants to be back home — soon! “My family and I have had a tough time. Being able to move back would be such a break for us, emotionally and financially. I just hope they finish reconstruction by September 2017 as they are promised,” Perkins stated. According to BIB press secretary Matt Viggiano, “While BIB has more work to do, families are moving back into their elevated and rebuilt homes at a much faster pace. Ninety percent of City-managed construction projects are complete today. The program is fully-funded and that means every family will return to their newly-fortified and sustainable coastal home and communities.” According to Viggiano, as of press time, BIB has completed 3,915 or approximately 90 percent of all City-Managed construction and 7,934 homeowners, or 95 percent of all applicants, have been served with either a construction start or have been sent a check. See Q&A with RT & BIB below: RT: Why are some homes such as the Perkins’ taking so long for construction to be completed? BIB: Some BIB projects may be complex due to the age of the home or overall structural problems. Some of these issues come to light only after the home is prepared for lifting.
These issues take time to resolve. Many homes require asbestos abatement and testing, following which the contractor needs to obtain the necessary building permits. Often complications include unstable ground conditions and even high tides, which delay soil excavation. RT: What about those homeowners, again like Perkins, who are expressing their frustration with BIB’s rollout of rental assistance? BIB: BIB reimburses homeowners for rental costs during construction. This assistance was added in 2014 in order to minimize the financial burden to homeowners also paying a mortgage. Additionally, BIB has partnered with the Center for NYC Neighborhoods and NY Disaster Interfaith Services to provide one-on-one temporary housing assistance and can make direct payments to landlords for temporary rental apartments. RT: Are there rent cost restrictions for temporary housing? BIB: Temporary relocation assistance during construction for homeowners, who must relocate for more than 30 days, ranges from approximately $1,500 per month for a one-person household to $2,700 per month for a fiveplus person household. Rates are based on federal guidelines. Note that rental assistance is open to any homeowner has to move during construction. RT: For folks, seeking reimbursement and questions about delays for both rent and storage, what's the best contact to apply? Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Building Autism Awareness Vs. Autism Acceptance There’s a saying in my family, “Come see me and come live with me are two different things.” Let’s ponder on this. When you casually visit (see someone), the understanding or intimacy shared is at a completely different level than when you actually live with someone. (For example, think of that “great” friend you made in your freshman year of college, who you later got an apartment with, and were shocked upon the realization that this “friend” was actually Darth Vader reincarnated). This is how I view the functional levels at which, people are able to embrace autism versus tolerate autism. In the following situation described, identify which reaction you most associate with: In the supermarket, you see a child throwing a tantrum by hitting the floor, screaming and crying. Would you: A - Frown and think to yourself that this child has no behavior, all because of poor parenting. B- Look at the child and sympathetically glance at the parent, understanding that this child may be on the autism spectrum, and having a tough moment. C- Cautiously approach the parent, and inquire if you can be of any assistance. Perhaps even offer to buy a particular
treat the child may enjoy or sing a song. In the above scenario and reactions described, I wouldn’t necessarily vilify Reaction A, because that individual may not have a clue about autism, much less the behaviors exhibited by some children on the spectrum. Reaction B shows that this individual is aware of autism, but prefers to observe, rather than get intimately involved. Reaction C exhibits that this individual is not only aware of autism, but also accepts it and is willing to stand in the gap to help. I don’t necessarily subscribe to the notion that everyone should have Reaction C. Some folks have different tolerance levels and respectfully prefer to keep their distance. Sometimes even an element of fear may be involved. I believe the key to the universal understanding of autism is to first build awareness. You can make folks aware, but to cajole them into accepting autism is a much larger undertaking. Here are five suggestions on how to build autism awareness in your community: 1- Learn about autism. The more you learn, the easier it is to raise awareness! Start off by reading blogs by caregivers of those on the spectrum
and from bloggers who have autism. Some of my favorites are theautismdaddy.com and autismwithasideoffries.blogspot.com 2- Befriend a parent of a child on the spectrum. Some parents of children with autism feel isolated. Invite them for a coffee or tea just to chat. Offer to accompany them for a fun day at the park or beach with their children. Invite them to an adult get together. Once childcare is established, it would be beneficial for them to hang out with grownup friends and have some mummy time. Ask them questions about what their daily routines are like and what activities their child enjoys. The goal is to learn about these families and offer solid support and friendship. 3- Support events organized by local autism groups in your community. Here’s a fun one that is being hosted next Friday, July 7, 6 p.m. at Rippers Concession on Beach 86th Street boardwalk. Mark your calendars!

Dylan Smith Remembered There was a huge turnout for the 6th Annual Dylan Smith Memorial Paddleout on Friday, June 23. Surfers, friends and family all came out to Beach 86th Street to remember the hometown hero who died while surfing down in Puerto Rico in 2012. Just two months before, Smith was called a hero for his action on the nights of Hurricane Sandy, in which he went
out on his surfboard to rescue neighbors from their homes that were on fire. T-shirts were sold at the annual event to race funds fro FACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures). Dozens of surfers went out on their boards and formed a circle, while they tossed flowers into the ocean, and paid respects to their fallen brother. Photos from Rita Regan.

Little League Recap ROCKIES STAND TALL; FORCE DRAMATIC FINALES
In both the Pee Wee Senior and Major Boys divisions, the Rockies stared elimination in the face and raised up to force a winner-take-all title game. Last Sunday, the Drive Safe Rockies of Major Boys won a thriller, 6-5, against the Neponsit Realty Giants to keep their championship hopes alive. With the score tied 4-4, the Rockies pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the big blow being Logan Kase’s tie-breaking double. The Giants rallied back, however, plating one on leav-
ing the bases loaded in their last at bat. The Breezy Dog Rockies of the Pee Wee Senior division had their season-saving victory on Tuesday, topping the Pico Mariners 12-8. Brendan McIntyre started the game on the mound for the Rockies and was solid giving up two runs against a great Mariners lineup. He was followed by Richie Colleran who also pitched very well, holding the Mariners again to just two runs in his two innings. Luke Walsh closed it out by shutting the door on the Mariners rally to get the Rockies the win. All three pitched excellent games. McIntyre (2-2, 3 runs, RBI) and Colleran (3-3, 4 runs, walk) each reached base in all four of their at bats. Clutch hitting came from Jack "Rocco" Duggan who was 3-4 with four huge RBI's. Luke Walsh rapped a monster double in
the third inning, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Key at bats by Andrew Valdemira, Anthony Greco, Michael Biondolillo, Gregory Powers and Brian Durante also kept the team in the game and kept the Rockies’ rallies moving. Jack Hayes added a heads-up putout from centerfield in the 2nd. The championships in these two divisions as well as

Jamaica Bay Softball League – Week 4 By The Commissioner
Week 4 came and left as quick as a moon tide. For the third week out of four, we had the brooms out again. On Field 1 the Chuggernauts got their first wins of the year as they beat the Old Head 14-11 and 22-3. Over on Field 2, the Moneyballs kept their winning streak alive and are the only team undefeated as they won easily 13-1 and 10-4 over the Member Berries. With the two wins, the Moneyballs are sitting at 8-0 on top of the West Division and looking like the new top team in the league. In a big East Division matchup, the Knights of Columbus took out the Orioles 8-6 and 12-6. Shout out to Big Selfie legging out his first triple of the year. From what we heard, it was tough playing left field for anyone over on Field 3 but another shout out goes to
Carmine Scotti for being the best dressed in the league. In our later games, the Misfits got back to their winning ways as they cooled off the No-Shows winning by the mercy rule 16-4 and then shutting them out 8-0. With the two wins, the Misfits, who are under new management, jump up to 2nd place in the East Division. Field 2 was our big matchup of the day as a big bet was on the line. The 1st place The Army took on the Morning Wood in the battle of camo jersey vs camo jersey/ Conklin vs Conklin. At the end of it all, Morning Wood won easily 16-6 and then former league MVP Steve Ellis had a walk / hit as MW took game 2, 5-4. Word on the street is that the younger Conklin owes his brother something at the All-Star Game. Field 3 had our Game of the Week as the 2nd Place Kings took on the 3rd Place Mudsharks.

After winning four straight games, the Mudsharks fell to the Kings 6-3 and 9-7 in two close games, which we predicted. We are almost at our halfway point and there are no games going on next weekend due to our bye week for the 4th of July. It’s rumored the Chuggernauts and NoShows will make up their matchup from Week 1 but we’re not sure. If they do play, look for the Chuggers to keep the ball rolling over the No-Shows. Since we’re almost at the halfway point we want to remind everyone that the top three teams from each division make the playoffs. Top team in each division have a bye and the 2 seed plays the 3 seed.
