Rock the Block Fun Day Set for Saturday By Katie McFadden

Though Foley Fatukasi has made it to the big-time as a defensive tackle for the NY Jets, he hasn’t forgotten his roots. The Far Rockaway native is coming back to town to host Rock the Block Fun Day on Saturday, June 5 with the Far Rock Greek Council, the Rockaway Ravens Football Team and the Rok Nation Dance Team. On Saturday, June 5, head to Bayswater Park (701 Bay 32nd Street) between noon and 6 p.m. for a day of fun! Fatukasi will be at the event for meet and greets, autographs and photos. The event will also include huge inflatable slides and bounce houses, popcorn, snowcone and cotton candy machines, a rock wall provided by the 101 Precinct, a 360 camera provided by MakeMyMotherProud, chalk, jump rope, hacky sack, tug-a-war and a dance battle sponsored by the Child Center of New York and smaller bounce houses sponsored by Influence Activewear.

There will also be dance performances by the Rok Nation Dance Team and the Can’t Be Tamed Dance Team, plus musical performances by New Vision Charter High School For The Humanities IV and JoDN. Calvin Stanley, author of new children’s book, “She Can,” and Sumaia Reina, author of children’s book “Beauty is Me” will both be on hand with copies of

their books for sale that they will sign. Food will be provided by some local restaurants such as Cuisine by Claudette, Super Burrito, Two Dudes Burgers & Fries, Althea Tropical Delights and Ray Empanadas. Curtis Turney-Rentas, founder of the Far Rock Greek Council, says Saturday’s event was all Fatukasi’s idea. “He reached out to me and others to help him bring this idea to life. He wanted to come back to the community and bring these organizations together to show you can reach stardom, become an NFL player, a rapper, a music artist, or someone else that’s famous, and still come back to your neighborhood and give back,” Turney-Rentas said. With so many sponsors involved, and more than 75 volunteers, Turney-Rentas says the event will be a good example of the community coming together for something positive. “It’s so exciting for me to be able to get all of these sponsors together for this event to really show

what community looks like, especially with all the restaurants from up the beach donating food,” he said. In addition to the ones mentioned, some of the other event sponsors include the 101 Precinct Explorers, the 101 Precinct Council, Queens Defenders, Eir Hydration, Brothers 4 Peace, Rock Safe Streets, the Office of Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson, Queens Royal Priesthood, RDRC (Rockaway Development Revitalization Corporation) and CW Junk & Moving LLC. The event is free and open to all. Covid safety precautions will be taken including a Covid questionnaire for all attendees, and a PPE table will be on hand to provide masks, gloves and sanitizer to those who want it. Turney-Rentas said this will be one of many future events with Fatukasi. “This is not the last you’re gonna see of him,” he said. They hope to form the Rock the Block Foundation to provide scholarships to youth in the future.

A Big Fix for Rockaway’s Pets By Katie McFadden

Rockaway is getting a big fix— for pets. Itty Bitty City Kitties, Zion’s Mission Animal Rescue, Catfixerny and The Toby Project are teaming up to bring free services from spay and neuter to vaccinations, microchips and

food for pets and their owners who could use some help. The local rescuers put out the call in the last few weeks about “The Big Fix,” a day in which the team would offer a free workup for pets by appointment only. According to Samantha Knox of Itty Bitty City Kitties, on Sunday, June 6, The Toby Project and Zion’s Mission are going to sponsor 16 animals to get spayed and neutered, and the other groups are sponsoring vaccinations, deworming, microchipping and well visits for another 50 animals. “My rescue is sponsoring all of the medication and the location and we have some volunteer vet techs coming to donate their time,” Knox said. And while that is plenty, Knox says they wish they could do more. She says they received more than 300 applications for the free services, but they had to limit what they could offer. “We had to put a cap on it. It’s fairly expensive and a lot of it is out of pocket, so we had to put a cap on what we can accomplish financially,” Knox said. They also limited the services to just residents of Rockaway and Broad Channel, particularly those who are low income and could provide proof. Knox says they’re providing the services to support the over-

all cause of helping animals in the Rockaways. “I believe you can’t rescue unless you’re doing it full circle and bringing it back to pet parents and right now there’s a significant wave of pet owners surrendering animals because of the pandemic causing financial stress,” she said. “We decided to combine our financial resources to give back to the community and help pet owners in need. The peninsula has a serious animal problem with dogs being tied up and cats being dumped, so we’re trying to stave off some of this stuff. There’s nowhere to go in Rockaway for low-income pet services and we want people to be able to keep their pets.” With such a high need, Knox says this won’t be the only opportunity for those who may have missed out. “Hopefully we can fundraise again so we can offer even more,” she said. “We’re hoping to do this again in August.” The services are made possible through various fundraising efforts from the rescues, one of which is taking place this Friday, June 4 at Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street). From noon until closing, all are welcome to stop by and show their support by bringing donations of pet food that will be given away to those in need. “I’m hoping the community comes together and provides us with enough food supplies to help us give back,” Knox said. The Rockaway Brewing Company’s feline mascot Pidge will be on hand to “host” the event and Knox says she may bring one of her popular rescue kittens, Gilbert. There will be some beers dedicated to the event and $1 to $2 from each sale will go towards supporting the rescues to help offset the costs of The Big Fix. “This is one of those times where Rockaway does what Rockaway does best,” Knox said. The new groin/jetty being installed at approximately Beach 145th Street is already doing its job by catching sand on the east side and enlarging the beach in the process. Groins take two to three months to install and this and the one on Beach 149th will be finished in the coming days. The Army Corps of Engineers will then move just a few block over, eastward, and begin work on two new jetties, one at

Beach 140th and one at Beach 135th Street, approximately. Trucks will continue to access the beach from Beach 142nd Street. The two new jetties are expected to be a little longer than the one at Beach 145. The “transitioning,” to the new installation, according to Dan Falt of the Army Corps, will begin as soon as today, Thursday, June 3. This represents a slight ahead-of-schedule plan. Beach 98th and 92nd will start in the fall. In all, 20 jetties will be either installed or repaired and is expected to take two to three years.

The Beach is Back The beaches are open! Rainy weather washed out much of opening weekend but that didn’t stop the city from starting the season with its beach opening ceremony on Friday, May 28. After a year without it due to coronavirus shifting beach opening plans last summer, the ceremony returned to Beach 17th Street on Friday. As people get vaccinated and restrictions lift, the event drew a big crowd of smiling faces. “After the past year that we’ve had, I’m so looking forward to taking in some sand and some surf this summer,” NYC Parks

Commissioner Mitchell Silver, who hosted his last beach opening ceremony before he resigns this summer, said. Almost every local elected official came out for the uplifting event including Borough President Donovan Richards, who even sang a rendition of “Rockaway Beach” by the Ramones, Rep. Gregory Meeks, Assembly Members Stacey Pheffer Amato and Khaleel Anderson, State Senators Joseph Addabbo and James Sanders, Council Member Selvena Powers-Brooks, as well as Community Board 14 District Manager Jon Gaska and Chair Dolores Orr, and Queens Parks Commissioner Michael Dockett, who all said a few words about the opening. Recognition was given to lifeguards who keep our beaches safe all summer, as reminders were given to only swim when they’re on duty. Charles Jacobs, owner of Dredsurfer Grill, was recognized for providing food at the event and entertainment with a steel drummer on site. The new concessions and the

ongoing jetty project were mentioned. And reminders were given that coronavirus, while improving, is not gone yet. Social distancing will be encouraged on the beaches. Masks will need to be worn in comfort stations, and new this year, mobile vaccination buses will be available to give vaccines to those who want them, along the beach all summer, no appointment necessary. Garcia Wants The Job Of Mayor She started way down in the polls. With little name recognition, she was one of the longest of longshots in the race for mayor, but she’s made surprising strides, making her anything but a longshot now. Kathryn Garcia put in the kind of work on the campaign trail that she was known for in a multitude of city jobs, including as Commissioner of the Sanitation Department. Recent polls show her leading or in the top three. The candidate came to Bun-

galow Bar on Tuesday, June 1, as part of a meet and greet and locals came out to ask questions and learn more about the Brooklynite who has built a reputation as a hands-on, can-do person who past mayors have relied upon to fix things. Garcia fielded questions about transportation challenges facing Rockaway, homelessness, affordable housing, mental health, Queensway, St. John’s Hospital and healthcare options, bridge tolls, trash/ beach cleaning, the City’s bureaucracy, and school funding. She is for supportive housing and against the current shelter system. “Housing really does heal,” she said, adding that decent housing gives individuals a foundation to start a more

productive life. Garcia said she will push for 50,000 units of “deeply affordable” housing and will “make it easier to build to begin with,” calling out the Department of Buildings as being obstructive. Up-zoning should be done in transit-rich areas of the city and basement apartments, if egress issues are addressed, could be legalized. “We need to be a growing city.” With a growing city, she was

asked about infrastructure, and said infrastructure has be ahead of actual development. Some statements from Garcia: “Homeless shelters are a waste. And they serve no one well. And we are paying (shelter owners) $65,000 a year to house families. That money can be spent in far better ways.” Continued on page 9

He wasn’t terrible! ***** With the large summer crowds heading this way, the City will also be offering walk-in, no appointment needed vaccinations on mobile units throughout the summer. One has been posted at Beach 84th Street recently. ***** And speaking of walk-ins, Rockaway Park will be getting another urgent care. And that’ll make three. The new place is CityMD, part of a chain, and is located at Beach 116th Street

and Rockaway Beach Blvd. It’s set to open next week. ***** Rockstock and Barrels, the annual skate, surf and music fest is back next Saturday, June 12 at Beach 90th Street! ***** Well, this is a buzz killer. Rockaway Bazaar (aka the concessions) is still trying to get a liquor/beer/wine license. Aaron Broudo, one of the Bazaar principals, says it’s under review by the State Liquor Authority (SLA) but so far they can’t do much except keep their fingers (and toes) crossed. ***** You know about The Rockaway Hotel. Suspect Set Loose After Assault

Be careful out there, ladies. On Tuesday, May 25, a local sixmonth pregnant woman was allegedly assaulted in broad daylight on Beach 95th Street. By Wednesday, the suspect was released and back on the street. In a social media post, the woman who says she was attacked said, “I was assaulted on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Rockaway by the Q53 bus stop on Beach 95th/96th Street. This

man grabbed me and then backed me into an alley. He shoved me to the ground and pinned me down. I fought him and screamed, and he ran away. I found him in the same alley about 30 mins later. He was arrested by the police. They found a knife in his backpack,” she said. Her post included a photo that was taken of the man shortly after the attack and a mug shot following his arrest, providing a warning to others to be aware of him. “Fast forward to today and he’s back on the street. His name is Michael Capece. Please be aware NYC/Broad Channel/Howard Beach/Rockaway of this man. I’ve pressed charges against him, but while we await the court date, he is allowed to roam free," she said. The posts were quickly shared near and far as local communities spread the word. The Rockaway Times reached out to the young woman for additional comment but did not receive a response by press time. Out of concern for her safety, we’re withholding her name, but she

and her baby are doing okay. According to New York State Unified Court System records, the suspect, Michael Capece, born in 1992, was arrested on May 25 by the NYPD. Capece was charged with a misdemeanor charge of “criminal possession of a weapon with intent to use,” a violation of harassment in the second degree, and the “top charge,” a misdemeanor charge of “assault with

intent to cause physical injury.” According to the court records, Capece appeared in Queens Criminal Court on Wednesday, May 26. The case was adjourned, a temporary order of protection was issued and Capece was released on his own recognizance. He does not have to appear in court again until August 25. The following day, the alleged attacker was spotted walking around the boardwalk in the Beach 80s, wearing a shirt with the name of a family business, “Capece Landscaping.” According to other claims, the suspect was allegedly harassing and intimidating other young women and children in the area in the following days. On social media, locals said that prior to the attack, he had been spotted in recent weeks around Rockaway and Howard Beach. Previous arrest records from Horry County, South Carolina show Michael Joseph Capece, from Howard Beach, was arrested on March 24, 2020 for “entry on another’s pasture.”

I just want to note these rules are for everyone, not just our visitors. I just am so sad we had such a poor weather weekend that we could not try to implement the rules. Here are some we ran out of room for last week: Rule 4: PDA. Our beach is a public beach, not a private

beach on a romantic getaway. You may hold hands but do not make out in the water or on your blanket. I have seen women straddling their partner on their blanket, on a weekend! Last summer I saw much worse but this is a family newspaper. Thanks. Rule 5: As far as beach umbrellas go, we do not want someone to get impaled while trying to enjoy a sunny day at the beach. I understand skin cancer and sunburn are a fac-

tor in you wanting to sit underneath the shade, but you need to put in some effort. Dig a hole and make sure it is securely in the sand. It does take some effort. If you need help, ask. I am sure each beach has an umbrella guru. We have plenty. Rule 6: Do not change your clothes on the beach. Walk to the nearest restroom and change out of your bathing suit into the attire you wish to wear for your commute home. No one wants to see this. Also, do not take a full shower with soap and shampoo at the showers on the boardwalk. Those showers are for cleaning off the sand, not your full body shower. Rule 7: This rule is not really for the beach but it applies to walking around the streets and in the neighborhood businesses. Shirts and shoes are not optional. Put them on. I do not care if you are thin and can rock the look, many of you cannot. This rule especially goes into effect after dark. I once saw a young lady with a great shape in a bikini and a sarong eating dinner at a local restau-

Would you feed a rat on the subway? I do not think so. Please do not leave food around as it will attract the beach rats. Also, be careful with your food, they will eat it right out of your hand. I had a seagull take a full slice of pizza off a plate as I was passing it to my daughter. And store your food when you go in the water! Rockaway never forgets. Despite the parade being canceled again this year, Rockaway residents showed up strong to honor and remember those members of the armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice, at the various Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 31. American Legion Daniel M. O'Connell Post # 272 hosted ceremonies at the Four Chaplain’s Monument outside St. Francis de Sales church, Memorial Circle on Beach 121st Street and the Doughboy and Doughgirl Monuments on Beach 95th Street. Veteran Mike Honan led the ceremonies, starting each with the National Anthem, followed by a prayer and the reading of the honor roll of the local uniformed members who gave their life for this country. Army Veteran Brian Galarza played Taps on the bugle and a ceremonial wreath was laid at each monument, followed by the playing of “God Bless Ameri-

ca," which the community proudly joined in to sing. As we approach the 20th anniversary of September 11, Honan also took the time to recognize those who died in that tragedy. As Honan recognized the local youth in attendance, including students from St. Francis de Sales and boy scouts from Pack 147, he explained the purpose behind the ceremonies, citing a lesson from a movie his grandson loves, “Coco.” “The goal was as long as you had

someone alive who remembered your name, when you pass, you are never forgotten, and this is our goal here to have our heroes

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, joined the ceremonies at the Doughboy monument. “Freedom isn’t free,” she said. “Someone paid for that with their life. Someone’s family was broken in order for us all to be here today to have the freedoms to gather, for free speech. We should never forget, but as a community, we’re here together and that’s what we’ve always done in this community.” Honan says that he hopes to resume the traditional Memorial Day Parade next year and hopes that local youth will be at the forefront.

I didn’t really pay that much attention to what’s been happening in the neighborhood, especially during the pandemic when the tendency was to stay inside. But with the advent of summer on the horizon, and the pandemic receding, and masks coming down around town at the recommendation of health officials, I started to notice some changes around the neighborhood. Maybe you have noticed too? First off, 116th street has gone through a mini renaissance of sorts. Mike McMahon did a beautiful job on the outside of Rogers and added a beer garden in the back and a side party room. What a wonderful addition to what’s already an institution in Rockaway. And

did you notice that Rogoff ’s is gone? Sadly too, the Thank You café by Maribel of Caracas fame, but the storefront is going through a metamorphosis, and it looks like something beautiful will emerge when finished. Also true of the old PJ Curran’s which never recovered from Hurricane Sandy. Now the storefront has been completely redone, and I hear good things are coming there. Add that to the Chef’s Table at one end and the awesome Claudette’s at the other end and it suddenly looks like 116th is coming together. And City MD fills in at the old bank site on the corner, and the newest condos are now for sale at the beach, and it begins to look less rundown. And how wonderful is it to see Liz Hanna beautifying the area with new planters all around with small trees and flowers. It shows that one person can make a difference. And speaking about making a difference, what about the new restaurant Rocco’s! As Stanley Tucci likes

to say, Oh My God, the food is so good. What a great investment by that team, transforming the backyard into a great place for a summer meal. And if you want to hear live music uptown, the Harbor Light has started a music series in the main bar area. And whoever is doing the cooking there now has got it down pat. Of course, the downtown scene continues to thrive with RBQ’s and Whit’s serving unbelievably great food but also supplying awesome venues for local bands to get back out there and play for everyone. And did you know that Thai Rock is booking music again? Robert is celebrating his ten-year anniversary this year operating Thai Rock. Restaurants are a notoriously hard businesses to keep going, and we have been blessed with some very creative, entrepreneurial restaurateurs. And Robert ranks right up there with the best of them. Congratulations to him and Metta for bringing Thai food and jazz

to Rockaway successfully. And The Rockaway Hotel is really the shining jewel, with a killer rooftop, great restaurants, terrific staff, a pool scene, and oh yeah, a hotel too! Hats off to the investors in this enterprise for having the courage and perseverance to see this venture through. We are all the beneficiaries of their vision. Not so clear yet is the boardwalk scene at the concessions. For the last several years, the concessions have been so cool with innovative food and outdoor music. With new management getting their footing and the city trying to figure out what they will allow, our fingers are crossed that these venues find their stride this summer. We know that the Caracas team will do a great job, and it’s great that they are back. Well, like I said, I am only casually observing these changes, but what I see is all good. I hope everyone has a great, safe, memorable summer!!

Jamaica Babies! Osprey Program Shows Continued Success By Katie McFadden

It’s one of the greatest success stories of Jamaica Bay. Some may know that the osprey, a large fish-eating bird of prey, has decided to call Jamaica Bay home in recent years. One prominent nest can be seen high atop a platform that towers Cross Bay Boulevard while approaching Broad Channel. But this is just one of several nests around the area. The osprey population is flourishing locally, and nothing could be more evident of that than seeing a nest full of newborn osprey chicks, right in the middle of Jamaica Bay. On Friday, May 28, The Rockaway Times took a ride along with a man who knows Jamaica Bay and its wildlife better than most, Don Riepe. After all, the bay is literally the backyard of the Broad Channel resident, who serves as a Jamaica Bay Guardian and Director of the Northeast Chapter for the American Littoral Society

after retiring from a long career with the National Park Service as a naturalist ranger and manager of the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in 2003. Riepe knows the osprey’s success story in Jamaica Bay well. After all, he hatched it. “Way back in 1990, there were no ospreys nesting in New York City,” Riepe said. He explained that in the 1960s, the osprey population was

decimated due to the widespread use of insecticide DDT. “It would concentrate in their system and interfere with their ability to produce calcium. They would sit on the eggs and the eggs would break. The population crashed as a result,” Riepe said. However, in 1972, President Richard Nixon banned the use of DDT by executive order. “It took ten years to work its way out,” Riepe said. But

it started to show positive results. In the 1980s, the osprey began to make a comeback and started nesting out in Long Island. After observing this, Riepe wanted to see if the osprey would consider Jamaica Bay as a nesting spot. JAMAICA BABIES! Continued from Page 16 1991, Jamaica Bay had a nest with its first successful breeding pair. And it was just the beginning. Seeing the comeback, Riepe started to add more platforms around Jamaica Bay, spanning from Inwood in Nassau County to Gerritsen Beach in Brooklyn. “Since then, every year we get another pair and another pair and now we have 34 nesting pairs of ospreys in Jamaica Bay,” Riepe said. Last Friday, The Rockaway Times got to see a part of that success story. As Riepe went around Jamaica Bay to monitor some of the nests by boat, we and members of the Brooklyn Bird Club got to join along. Unusually high tides due to a full moon made it more difficult than usual to explore the marshes but one was accessible. As we donned waders and trekked through marsh grass, Riepe led the way toward a low-lying nest. Two adult ospreys floated above, keeping a close, yet cautious watch. As Riepe reached the nest, he expressed

THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 2021 joy over what was found inside— three osprey chicks, hatched just a few days earlier. Ospreys can have anywhere from one to four young, so Riepe said this threechick nest was typical. As their heads wobbled, the tiny birds looked up with their bright eyes that will turn a beautiful shade of red as they grow older. Seeing them at such a young stage was a treat as Riepe explained they grow up fast. “They grow from little chicks into full grown ospreys in eight weeks,” he said. And about a week after that, the young birds test out their wings and leave the nest for the first time. Along with the chicks were some leftovers from breakfast—a half-eaten menhaden carcass. Menhaden, or bunker, are the entrée of choice for these raptors, and as shown by the growing population of whales in local waters who also feed on menhaden, bunker are aplenty around Rockaway. Riepe explained these fish are an easy target for osprey. “Menhaden is a surface feeding fish, so they’re the easiest to catch and the most numerous,”

he said. Occasionally, he’ll find other species, like triggerfish or sea robins in a nest, but they don’t appear to be a preference of the osprey, as he mostly finds them intact. As part of the effort to monitor the osprey population, for about 30 years, Riepe and others have banded the young birds, who despite their large talons, are mostly docile when being handled. Banding the birds has led to information such as where they go in the winter. After the birds leave the area in October, some have been found as far as Colombia and Venezuela in South America. In late March and early April, the birds start to return to the place where they were born—Jamaica Bay. The ospreys are also banded to see if they’re running into any trouble at the nearby JFK airport. Riepe says since the birds can interfere with the planes, the airport has a permit to shoot and kill a certain number of them. The birds can also be killed by the planes. But there have been very few of these instances. “I think we’ve had one banded osprey that was reported killed by a

plane and that was a young bird from the Nassau nest in Inwood.” Riepe hopes those numbers remain low while the osprey’s success story continues. “Hopefully we can maintain a strong population without having issues with the airport,” he said. With funding from the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy in recent years, Riepe has been able to continue the nesting program by replacing damaged nesting platforms and putting up new ones. “It’s been a successful program and people love to see the ospreys when they come to the bay. It’s one of our major attractions at the Wildlife Refuge,” Riepe said. “I feel like we’ve made an impact in bringing back a bird from the brink of extinction and now we monitor them and it’s great for people to see them. They add to the diversity of wildlife in an urban area like New York City, which is amazing. You can see more birds in New York City than you can in the Adirondacks. It’s nice that we can learn to live with wildlife in an urban area. It shows it’s doable and we don’t have to eradicate everything.”

Raccoon Times: Rockaway’s Nightlife Rain or Shine RBSC Summer Kickoff By Nicole Taylor-Lang

Spending a day at the beach can’t be beat, but like a raccoon, Rockaway really comes to life at night in the summer. As restrictions lift and Rockaway returns to some normalcy, we want to highlight some of the nightlife happenings around the neighborhood. From summer kickoff parties, to music events, trivia, shows and more, reporter Nicole Taylor-Lang is hitting the town, shedding light on some highlights of the local bar/restaurant scene and beyond. Some Memorial Day weekend plans took a hit last weekend due to the cold rainy weather but that didn’t stop the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street) from holding their annual summer kickoff party on Saturday, May 29. The party started off with DJ Jonathan Toubin setting the tone for the night, playing original vinyl for the dance floor, followed by blues rock band and icon Strange Majik. They kept the party lively as things slowly get back to the norm now that more people are getting vaccinated each day. RBSC’s bartenders were slaying it behind the bar making different drinks from margaritas to signature specials like the Pink Flamingo, a refreshing gin-based drink. The event was sponsored by different shops and vendors with a variety of raffle gifts. “We had a lot of local vendors donate really awesome prizes,” Wico Velez, a bartender at the Surf Club said. “Station RBNY donated a Paragon longboard and Breakwater Surf donated a Santa Cruz short board.” The prizes ranged from surfboards to apparel, gift cards, skateboards and other beach/ surf goodies. The benefactors included local surf shops Station RBNY, Breakwater Surf Co, Boarders, St. James NYC and Skudin Surf school. “The money being raised is going towards the band and DJ tonight to support live music,” event

staffer Kilee Richards said. With the pandemic taking a toll on the music industry the last year, people are finally getting to enjoy live music again. From locals to people taking the ferry in for the day, everyone was enjoying their time kicking off the summer season at the Surf Club. “I heard about the show from my friends,” Brooklynite Sarah Pallack said. “I haven’t been here in a while and was excited to come back; it’s is very nice to be out in public again.” Close to the end of the night it was time to call out the raffles. While the party vibe alone kept people happy, smiles were even bigger for those like Rachel Cutler from Manhattan who got to take home some of the coveted prizes. Cutler won the Paragon longboard, one of the prizes everyone had been eyeballing. “I honestly cannot believe I won. I almost didn’t win because I did not realize it was my ticket number at first,” she said with a laugh. “This has been the best event I’ve been to since the pandemic. It’s been a great welcome back to the world.” The Rockaway Beach Surf Club will be hosting more events this summer. They hope to see more faces come out to enjoy a delicious cocktail or even grab food from Tacoway Beach inside the Surf Club. From RISE: Virtual Art Workshop By Liam Lachner

On Saturday, May 22, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity (RISE) hosted a Virtual Art Workshop. The workshop was led by Camila Morales and Dominika Ksel who are both Rockaway residents with over ten years of experience as working artists. Thanks to a grant that RISE received through the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ Building Community Capacity Initiative, RISE has been commissioned to host a series of virtual art workshops for our community. The purpose for these workshops is to provide the community with a fun way to interact with one another virtually, while also teaching them how to create something special during these difficult times. Last year, as part of RISE’s Art Underneath the Elevated initiative, RISE commissioned the

Camila and Dominika to create Sonic Constellation, which was located under the elevated train tracks on Beach 59th street and Rockaway Freeway last summer and will be going back up in July. Dominika and Camila’s workshop was a two-part series. For the first part, participants gathered in-person at Beach 59th Street, and they went out on the beach to

learn how they can make art out of the debris they collected. Also, they learned how to create audio compositions from the natural sounds they hear on the beach using their phones. Then they brought all of the debris they found on the beach back to RISE’s garden to be cleaned and combined with materials that the artists brought with them to make something new. The second part of Dominika and Camila’s workshop was much different from their first part, not only because it took place over Zoom, but also the focus switched from crafting a sculpture to composing a soundscape. During the workshop they gave a presentation on the different artists who create with recycled or reused materials, and the pieces that inspired them. Our artists then gave the participants a brief introduction to the different features of an audio editing software called Audacity. Then the artists taught partic-

ipants how to create a soundscape out of the audio they recorded on the beach during the first part of this workshop series. Finally, all of the participants had a chance to work on their own soundscapes and then we all shared them. RISE’s next Virtual Art Workshop will be focused on Creative Writing, taking place on Saturday, June 5 from 12- 2 p.m. over Zoom and hosted by Joyce Artis. Joyce is a former Far Rockaway resident and has been a part of RISE's volunteer group for the past six years. Unnatural Preserve Dear Editor: Whether you’re a Rockaway native or a visitor, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with the piping plover, the threatened shorebird that commands entire beaches to be shut down to allow for its undisturbed breeding. Did you know that the dunes and marshes of Far Rockaway are also home to the Yellow Crown Night Heron? How about the ring-necked pheasant? Probably not. Did you know that Rockaway is home to a 4,000 square foot

brewery? Did you know that the Arverne East development plans to include a new 10,000 square foot brewery and a 60,000 square foot boutique hotel? Probably. For decades, residents have passed by the lots spanning from Beach 60th street to Beach 32nd Street. For decades, residents have wondered how the city of New York could allow such a prime swath of beachfront property to deteriorate as a literal dumping ground. The solution was always obvious though now it is official: money talks. Isn’t it a shame how the City seems to always prioritize money over its ever-shrinking natural resources? There are 115 acres of natural land running adjacent to the beach in Far Rockaway. The recently approved Arverne East plan allocates 30% of the land for a nature preserve and 70% to be developed into a combination of residential / commercial space. The Arverne East website lists the primary components

of the project and lists “nature preserve” at the top of the list. Clever marketing to reassure a community built around the natural landscape of New York City that your primary objective is to develop a nature preserve. If that is the case then why does the nature preserve only receive 30% of the land being redeveloped? Notice how the specs of the nature preserve are missing though the specs of the rest of the space are front and center. Forgive me for thinking that those would be important specs to include since the nature preserve is the top primary component of the project. Development is appreciated. Local employment and community programs are appreciated. It seems hypocritical, however, to continually headline that this project will introduce a nature preserve, while the nature preserve is the smallest part of this immense project. Forgive me for thinking too outside of the box here, but can’t all of these residential

and commercial plans take place across all of the existing residential and commercial space adjacent to the 115 acres of natural land? Wouldn’t that be true investment in the existing community? Wouldn’t it make more sense for Arverne East, a project that is so proud of its efforts to preserve nature, to uhm... preserve nature? Wouldn’t it be nice if we lived in a city where funds were poured into actually preserving natural land to let local ecosystems flourish? Or to educate the community on those natural communities? Wouldn’t it be nice if developers had to work with the land that’s already zoned for residential & commercial before tapping into the natural landscape? I’ll be the first one to agree that the land has always been an eyesore. Development is long overdue. My point is that it’s a shame that the city would rather see 80 acres of natural, beachfront landscape turned Continued on page 21 1

Wellness Appreciated Dear Editor: I want to thank Katie McFadden for her beautiful article about NurtureU Wellness as they celebrated their fifth anniversary. My experience at NurtureU Wellness has brought me a new life. In August of 2020, I was diagnosed with Lymphedema that affected my left leg. This was a result of a traumatic injury followed by a major surgery. Not a common result but a possible one. Many ordered their groceries online, and also ordered their meals online from the few restaurants that were open. The death toll from Covid was growing very fast, in the U.S. and other countries. Our doctors, nurses, and all first responders became our heroes. In most areas, at 7 p.m. in the evening, people would open their windows and cheer for our heroes. People could not visit their loved ones in Nursing homes, and hospitals. Traveling was out of the question. COVID masks became mandatory everywhere. Visiting your family was out of the question. Now as we are 15 months from the beginning of this pandemic, three vaccines were created for this virus— Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson. Most people have been aggressive in getting vaccinated, especially if you have underlying conditions. As the

death toll has lessened, and more people have been vaccinated, the government has relaxed some restrictions. The Big ones—If fully vaccinated, no masks required, also you can now get together with family if vaccinated. Prior to the vaccines, we would take short walks on the boardwalk, and someone would remark, “Is that you??” I would say: YES through my muffled mask voice. We would meet another neighbor, they would ask, “Did you get the shot? Where? First or second?” Please, I don’t want to talk with this DAMN mask on. We met another neighbor who asked, “Do you go to the church, or watch the Mass online?” I noticed, I was going out less and less. I just hope with all of this social distancing, we have not lost our social skills! We look forward to this summer, being able to enjoy Rockaway, and seeing faces & smiles that we have missed. Across our country, hundreds of thousands of people live in nursing homes, known as skilled nursing facilities (SNFs), not because they need specialized care or want to, but because Medicaid payment rules make that the only housing they can afford that gives them the daily living care that they need. Unfortunately, many of these residents died from COVID-19 at rates far in excess of the general population due to pandemic rules dictated by uncaring politicians. Nursing homes serve two very different populations. One requires short-term, post-acute rehabilitation services following surgical procedures like joint replacement. The other are longterm residents, most of whom need only basic daily living care, and most of whom would rather be living in their own communities among friends. With nursing homes struggling to serve

Nursing Homes Need RX these different populations, the whole business model has come under scrutiny. Major projects to study the quality of nursing home care have been launched by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, AARP, and the Convergence Center for Policy Resolution. The goal of these studies is to come up with a way to enable people to age in their own homes and communities. This will enable nursing homes to focus on treating those who really need institutional care. It will require changing the coverage rules for health insurances, especially Medicare and Medicaid. We are seeing several innovations that are helping people remain in their homes. The senior village movement is one model that uses a network of supportive volunteers to help with needs like shopping, transportation, and physician visits. Another model is the CAPABLE program that uses teams comprised of a nurse, occupation-

al therapist, and handyman to help older individuals achieve functional goals. The Hospital at Home program and the SNF at Home model are beginning to provide post-acute care at home. Some developers are designing healthy villages, transforming once-failing hospitals into hub-and-spoke networks of medical and support services for home-based care. Finally, advances in smart technology are making it easier to monitor the medical and safety status of older people in their homes. Home-based services are expensive, forcing many people into nursing homes against their preferences once their funds are depleted and they have no other choice. Even so, Medicaid pays only room and board costs in nursing homes and covers home- and community-based services only for those with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities. Ultimately, the goal is to expand home-based care and pare back nursing homes. Some

experts are advocating extended care wings in hospitals as an alternative to sending so many post-acute care patients to nursing homes. Adjusting Medicare and Medicaid rules will lead to better quality of care than exists now, plus it will lead to savings for both plans. There is also a push to have Medicare Advantage plans cover nonclinical services. Ideas include integrating long-term-care insurance into Medicare Advantage and employer-sponsored insurance plans and reducing the cost of private coverage by limiting the risk to insurers of high and uncertain future payouts by capping those payouts through a federal “catastrophic” program. A version of the latter is being prepared as legislation by Rep. Thomas Suozzi (D – New York). In short, our cherished seniors deserve better care than what is currently available. Letting Go Are we human beings having a spiritual experience or are we spiritual beings having a human experience? The hardest thing for a human to do is to let go. Let go of attachments, resentments, expectations, grudges, emotions and pain. Repeating the mantra, LET GO, again and again has been beneficial in my practice on and off the yoga mat. Releasing habitual patterns that are harmful to your well-being will open you up to an awakened state of equanimity. “Let go of the ways you thought life would unfold; the holding of

plans or dreams or expectationsLet it all go. Save your strength to swim with the tide.”- Danna Faulds. This is one of my favorite quotes reminding me to simply let go. Allow the flow of life to happen and become the witness with no judgements or hard feelings. I am not suggesting not to fight for what is yours but rather take a step back and decide what do you really want and need in your life today? We often fight to hold on to what is no longer necessary in our lives. There is story about the Dalai Lama being asked if he

had any regrets in life. He responded that he felt responsible for the death of an elderly monk who had come to him for guidance. When asked how he dealt with his feelings of regret, His Holiness replied, “I didn’t get rid of it. Wrestle Talk Impact Wrestling By Eric Jayden

I have been getting emails asking about IMPACT Wrestling, so let's take a look at this promotion. IMPACT was founded on June 19, 2002 by Jeff and Jerry Jarrett and since then it has undergone different ownerships and different names from NWA Total Nonstop Action, TNA Impact to Impact Wrestling. The company is now owned by Anthem Sports based out of Ontario, Canada. Many of today’s top Professional Wrestling Superstars got their start or an opportunity to be seen with Impact Wrestling. Stars like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, Xavier Woods, Homicide, Santana and Ortiz got their start with Impact and were molded by the promotion. The promotion's product has suffered through changes in ownership and booking

staff, in addition to losing television deals that affected the product. But most recently the Impact product has seen a resurgence with quality talent and storylines. Consistent storylines is the key factor that makes wrestling fans wanting to come back to see the product. Fans are drawn to the product when the storylines are

made interesting and not too cartoonish. In my opinion, professional wrestling fans should not be treated like they do not understand what is going on, or better yet, treat them as if they are valued fans and give them quality not quantity. So far Impact Wrestling has been doing a great job putting out quality matches with storylines. My only

hope is that Impact Wrestling continues on its current trend and hopefully gets an opportunity to surpass the WWE. But like they say in wrestling, "Time Will Tell.” The question of the week comes from Mitch M. from Belle Harbor and he asked, "What are your thoughts about the Ultimate Warrior?" Great Question Mitch! Ultimate Warrior for his time was one of the hottest wrestlers to draw a crowd like Hulk Hogan. He was an energetic performer who delivered high octane promos and had a bigger than life character.
