Remembering Father Jack

Story By Katie McFadden

The community has lost “The Holiest Man” as he is known to many locals. Rev. John J. Cullinane, better known as Father Jack, died on Monday, June 2. He was 85 years old. Father Jack devoted almost 59 years of his life to priestly service and served 15 of those years with the Blessed Trinity Parish as a pastor for St. Genevieve’s in Roxbury. He was sick with cancer for some time. Father Jack gave his last service at St. Genevieve’s around Christmas time and on Monday, he was met by God. Many remembered and mourned the loss of a holy man who meant so much to the community. Father Jack was there for many as they went through holy ceremonies like baptisms and communions and he had a special way of comforting those who were going through personal hardships. Roxbury resident Carol Weinsheimer says she was the first to welcome Father Jack to the community many years ago, and he returned the favor by being there for her. “He was walking down the sidewalk and he saw me and I greeted him. ‘You’re the new pastor?’ I asked. ‘Yes, I am,’ he said. I took him to the church and he said, ‘Well, I think I can talk loud enough here,’” Weinsheimer recalled of his comments on the tiny St. Genevieve’s. “He always bragged that I was the first one he met. He was so good to me. When my daughter and son died, he sat with me at my kitchen table and helped me through it. What priest would sit with you at the kitchen table? I would have never gotten through it without him,” she said. Weinsheimer says she visited Father Jack a few times when he was in the hospital and found him to be in good spirits, despite being ill. “I’ll never forget that smile on his face as I stood at the foot of his bed,”’ she said. “He was

such a good priest.” For many, Father Jack will always be a part of their family. “Father Jack was an amazing man who had so much love and compassion for everyone, especially kids. He made going to Mass on Sunday the most memorable part of your day, if not week. His sermons many times brought tears to eyes showing the unconditional love he had for Jesus Christ. He baptized all four of my children and became a part of all their lives as they all served under him as altar boys/girls. I teared up when I heard of his passing and I know my kids are going to be heart broken to hear of his loss. He was and will remain one of a kind,” Roxbury resident Peter Colleran said. Father Jack is also being remembered by the Manhattan College community, where he graduated from in 1951. Father Jack was a former Manhattan College Athletics Chaplain. He served as a confidant to hundreds of players and coaches, would often pray with teams before games, and in 2011, he was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame. The viewing for Father Jack was held on Tuesday, June 3 and Wednesday, June 4 at the Church of St. Genevieve. A Mass of Transferal was held on Wednesday evening and a Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Thomas More on Thursday morning. Father Jack was laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn following the Thursday morning Mass. “He was the holiest man I have ever encountered. Thank you for all the years of service to the Priesthood,” Roxbury resident Mary Bosch said. “Father Jack was a giant in our small town, beloved and loved by all. He was always there whenever you needed him. He will be missed by all,” Roxbury resident Robert Donohoe, said.

Chatting With A Dark Cloud You know the type. Some parent goes nuts at a little league game and then a short time later the same parent will make some statement how parents are out of control at games. Without a hint of irony or awareness. The same holds true for some Debbie Downers. Quick note: Debbie is not gender specific it covers male dark clouds as well. Some people just don’t realize they’ve got a disease called negatory-itis. Two people, Debbie Downer and Mike Mostpeople have exchanges that go like this:

Page 5

THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2015

Mike: The boardwalk is beautiful. Debbie: You kiddin’? It has cracks in it. Mike: I saw this surfer catch a wave, unbelievable. Debbie: It’s too crowded, all these kooks, ruining it. You can’t surf anywhere. Mike: I’m hungry. Debbie: There’s no place to eat. Mike: There’s restaurant row. 116th has a couple of places and -Debbie: That’s what I mean, there are too many. Mike: We should check out the Beach 40s. There’s a new hotel, a

28 DAYS

couple of farms with produce you can buy. And – Debbie: And people are shooting each other every day. Mike: Alright then, let’s go to the beach. Debbie: Too many hipsters. Mike: And what do you say about Riis Park? Debbie: More Hipsters. Mike: I’m gonna order a pizza. Debbie: Rockaway doesn’t have any good pizza. Mike - Somebody said on Facebook that -Debbie Downer: I don’t go on Facebook – too much negativity. Boyeling Over: Here’s a question. Think about it for a second. How many people would you call a “very good friend” or “dear friend”? I’m guessing you could count on one hand. And then here are politicians. Bill de Blasio called Eric Ulrich his very good friend at the boardwalk opening. I’m going out on a limb here because I’m not going to ask for a statement from Eric but I’m guessing they’re not. Of course, de Blasio is not alone. It’s true of just about all of them. Isn’t it amazing? These special people are so lucky to have so many dear friends. Of course, the truth is, some hate each other. Really, really hate. Wouldn’t it be great if some pol stood at the mic sometime and said, “I hate this guy and he shouldn’t be standing with us because he didn’t

do a damn thing.” But that’ll never happen. I just wish they’d stop calling their colleagues friends. Politicians do enough (or not enough) for us to complain about. Do they really have to debase the meaning of the word “friend,” too? The boardwalk opening was really just a chance for a long line of politicians and officials (dear friends of each other) to pat themselves on the back for the miracle of a whopping half mile of boardwalk being finished, two and a half years after Sandy. It would have been nice if someone stood at the mic and said, “It’s about freaking time.” Instead, it was just a love fest among great, dear friends for doing so much to get it done. The boardwalk itself was great, though there were some gripes that the lighting wasn’t right. Still, you gotta give the designers high praise for creating a Michelle Titus look alike and having her stand with the real politicians. Who’s Michelle Titus, you ask? Oh, she an Assemblywoman representing Far Rockaway in secret. ***A spellchecker asked me if a dark cloud was overhead when I wrote this week’s column, as if I was the Debbie Downer. Sheesh, I guess I’m like the little league parent who can’t see their own behavior. I just bummed everybody out an didn’t know it. Blame it on the politicians.

You’ve probably seen the ads about getting a lawyer if you think you were shortchanged on insurance payouts after Sandy. George Kasimos of StopFemaNow hopes everyone with a claim should hire a lawyer because he believes the more cases filed the more likely it is for the National Flood Insurance Program to get an overhaul – something that is crucial to the future of Rockaway. We think George is right. If you are unsure if you were treated fairly, get an attorney. ***** In case you missed it, The Addabbo Center has named Marjorie Hill as its new CEO. ***** It was more than two years since the Board ousted Peter Nelson. Ms. Hill, a Queens resident, was selected after a long, nationwide search. A licensed clinical psychologist and a former New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation provider and adminis-

As we were going to press, details were still developing. Our profound hopes and prayers are extended to the families and the Breezy community. ***** Another sad note was the passing of Rev. John J. You can find out more about the St. John’s position at HealthCareers.com and you can check out www.harrisrand. com for details about the conservancy position. ***** The editorial about easing bike restrictions drew a great amount of interest and plenty of letters to the editor. There is talk that a protest will happen soon after the second phase of the boardwalk opens (around July 4). We maintain that leisurely bike riding should be allowed at all hours. ***** Occupy Wall Street. Occupy Sandy. Occupy The Top 50? Apparently some people have objected to a list of the Top 50 Restaurants in the world and have started an Occupy movement calling for more transparency in the naming of top places. The list has been compared to FIFA, the soccer organization rife with corruption. We knew the list was a fraud when we didn’t see a single Rockaway restaurant on the list.

***** Speaking of questionable restaurant lists. Grubstreet, a blog about the NY restaurant scene, wrote: The Ultimate Guide to Where to Eat at Rockaway Beach This Summer. Since they included Riis Park in their “Rockaway Beach” guide we wonder how they possibly could have overlooked Bungalow Bar, Thai Rock, Daltons, The Wharf, and Pico. In addition to some good, established places, the article mentioned small stands and a couple places still on the way. We declare the list illegitimate! We are starting an Occupy Grubstreet group that will eat and drink at all the great overlooked places. For starters, you haven’t been to Rockaway if you haven’t tried a bay front place. ***** One of our summer interns is doing profiles on Rockaway businesses that have been around for 25 years or more. Story By Michael Leboff

It was a standing room crowd at the Rockaway Artists Alliance Theater last Wednesday morning as Mr. Robert Butler and his students from PS 53K in Brooklyn rocked the joint for their May Musical Madness concert. After getting his start as a sub in 2006, and a year later found himself standing in front of a full middle school band that would eventually play at the Rockaway Boardwalk opening, Butler, who goes by “Bobby” in Rockaway, eventually transitioned into special education and PS 53K. PS 53K is a school for students with disabilities and has sites all over Brooklyn and in the three years Butler has been teaching there he has seen tremendous growth within his program. “When I started there was a crate with percussion instruments. I went to Home Depot and started a bucket band,” he said of his humble beginnings. With some help from his principal, Heather Leykam, Butler then joined a program called Little Kids Rock. After finishing a weekend workshop, his group received guitars, amps, and other resources. This year he took to the Internet and raised money through a website called Donor’s Choose to purchase drums and speakers. Butler, who inspires the students by showing them video of live acts in class, says that the kids bring a tremendous amount of energy when they step onto the stage. “The kids take pride in what they are doing, but they also know that it’s supposed to be fun. I think it comes through when they are rocking out. Some of them turn into different people when they hit that stage.” Despite their disabilities, the performance on Wednesday was full of

joy and energy. And it becomes even more impressive when you consider the different lineups that performed. The first three songs were performed by students with Autism and for the last four songs, the students performing on drums, bass, guitar and drums were deaf. This group of students perform a few times a year. Butler and his musicians usually put on a Winter and Spring performance at the school before he takes them on the road. Despite the wildly successful shows, Butler says that his favorite memories from working with his students come inside the classroom. Wednesday’s show wasn’t just for the families and friends of the students, but the crowd also featured students from schools all over the city. “You never know what is going to happen on any given day, and the students can be brutally honest,” he explained. “Needless to say, class rehearsal is never dull.” On June 10th Butler and his students will take their show into Brooklyn to play at Borough Hall for the Brooklyn Borough President. As for Butler’s other band, Indaculture, they’re getting ready to get back in the groove after taking the winter off. “We are itching to play again,” Butler said. After rocking their traditional summer kick off show at Connolly’s, the band is practicing to get some new tunes ready for live performances. As of now Indaculture will be performing at Rockstock and Barrels on June 27th and will be doing a show on a boat trip from Thai Rock on July 30th. Butler also says the group will probably be playing a few other shows throughout the summer.

It’s Playtime! International Children’s Day Festival this Sunday By Katie McFadden

The weather is set to pick up for the weekend and Sunday will be a perfect day for a nice time out with the kids. All are welcome to Beach 116th Street for Rockaway’s International Children’s Day Festival. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 7, the beach block of Beach 116th Street will be closed off to cars and will be transformed into fun fest for kids and adults who want to get in touch with their inner child. There will be everything from live music by The Grayriders, folk dancing, performers from the Big Apple Circus, face painting, crafts, games, rides and a petting zoo, all for free. Some of the local businesses on the street will have tables set up outside their shops and their doors will be open to customers. There will also be additional food and retail vendors, plus a beer garden in the old Beach Club parking lot, for those looking for an adult beverage. The event is being held by the Beach 116th Street Partnership in an effort to show off the busy shopping corridor. “We want to do things to help the community, bring out participation from the

community and draw attention to our block and the merchants here,” Executive Director Linda Humphrey said. “We’re holding festivals like this because we want people to be aware that we have this great, main shopping corridor in Rockaway and we want for them to come enjoy the day here at our shops and our beach. On this end, we have places like Claudette’s, Ciro’s, Carvel, and a lot of other good food vendors here all year round. These places are here all year and could use the support of the community and visitors.”

The Beach 116th Street Partnership held a similar event last year called Poland’s International Children’s Day, but since International Children’s Day is held across the globe, they’re calling it Rockaway’s International Children’s Day this year. “We’re not labeling a specific nationality because it’s for all the children to enjoy,” Humphrey said. “We’ll have different foods from different cultures and entertainment from different groups. We wanted an overall flavor of all nationalities for all children and families.”

The organizers hope that event will draw visitors and locals alike. “I really hope a lot of the local people come and stop by and participate in the day because this is Rockaway’s largest street festival,” Humphrey said. “If you build it, they will come. We need things to be going on in the community and this is a really great event. We hope everyone comes out and has a good time.”

Ask the

DOC Chronic Fatigue By Peter Galvin, MD

The Institute of Medicine, a federally-funded medical think tank, recently released a report on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). In the past CFS was often dismissed as a psychological disorder and many practitioners dismissed its symptoms entirely. The IOM has concluded that not only is CFS a real disease but that it has a real physiological basis and should be taken seriously. They estimated that it affects between 836,000 and 2.5 million Americans although only about 10 percent are diagnosed and seek relief. They also recommended renaming it as systemic exertion intolerance disease

(SEID). CFS is characterized by extreme fatigue that can’t be explained by any underlying disorder. The fatigue worsens with exertion and does not improve with rest. The cause of CFS is unknown although there are many theories ranging from viral diseases like Epstein Barr to psychological stress. There is no single diagnostic test. There are eight official signs and symptoms: fatigue, loss of memory or concentration, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or armpits, unexplained muscle pain, joint pain without swelling or redness, headache, unrefreshing sleep and extreme exhaustion lasting more than 24 hours after physi-

cal or mental exercise. Symptoms need to be present for six months or more. Patients with CFS are commonly women in their 40s or 50s and those who may have difficulty managing stress. CFS may often lead to depression, social isolation, lifestyle restrictions and increased work absences. In order to diagnose CFS, a physician needs to rule out other diseases or disorders that might cause similar symptoms. That includes eliminating things like sleep disorders (insomnia, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome), anemia, diabetes, underactive thyroid and mental health issues (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia). A complete physical examination, comprehensive blood test and often a psychological evaluation are required to establish the diagnosis. Treatment can be difficult and is based on eliminating or improving symptoms. Medications include antidepressants and sleep medications, both of which have side effects of their own. The most effective treatment includes a gentle graded exercise program and psychological counseling. Self-help measures may include reducing stress (allow yourself time to relax every day and learn how to say no without guilt), improving sleep habits (go to bed and get up the same time each day, avoid day-

The Rockaway Times time naps and eliminate caffeine, alcohol and nicotine) and learning to pace yourself. Pain elimination therapies include acupuncture, massage therapy and yoga or tai chi. Some patients also find it helpful to join a support group. Thousands Of Eyes Were Smiling At The Irish Festival By Katie McFadden The 3rd Annual Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point Irish Festival was a weekend of great craic and wild success. Thousands attended the festivities at the St. Camillus parking lot on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. With beautiful weather and a great band lineup forecasted for Saturday, more than 2,500 people showed to shop, dance, drink, eat, listen to the music and have a nice time with the community. Rain was predicted for Sunday, which led to less of a turnout, but the storms held off until the evening, allowing visitors another chance to ex-

perience the festivities, including Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, who joined in the crowds. “In the three short years of doing this, people now know what a reputation and tradition we have grown,” chairperson John Manning said of the AOH Division 21 event. “There were both young and old out, not just kids. We had a great time. All of the brother Hibernians

pitched in and helped. I could not have the success of this festival if it wasn’t for my brother Hibernians.” About eight bands played and bagpipe bands and Irish dancers entertained the crowds throughout the weekend. Dalton’s debuted their Shore Shack Food Truck, serving up Dublin Egg rolls and Corned Beef and Swiss wraps. The winner of the raffle for two round-trip

tickets to Ireland and a 5-day tour, courtesy of CIE travel, went to Bernadette O’Callahan. The festival was such a success, that a date is already planned for next year on June 4 and June 5, 2016. “Every year we focus on making it bigger and better,” Manning said. Angry By The Sea Residents Still Riled At Charter School Plan By Michael Leboff

For the second time in less than three months, residents of Arverne by the Sea made their voices heard in front of Councilman Donovan Richards and developer Gerard Romski. In April, residents jammed into a room in the Arverne YMCA as they learned that Challenge Preparatory Charter School would be opening a middle school in the neighborhood and not the originally planned primary school that so many residents wanted. Originally, the plan was for Peninsula Prep to be the primary charter school for Arverne residents, but after a lengthy legal battle with DOE dragged on, Romski and his team made a deal with Challenge Prep to open a middle school instead. Just like at the meeting in April, Tuesday night’s meeting turned heated very quickly. The meeting, which was called together by Councilman Donovan Richards and was delayed 30 minutes because the representative from the Department of Edu-

cation was running late, got off to an interesting start. Just as things were about to begin, one of the of the residents held up a sign calling for a primary school and the crowd, which packed Macedonia Baptist Church on Beach 67th Street, responded with raucous applause. It set the tone for what was to come. Following a brief introduction from Richards, Romski, and DOE the floor was opened for questions, which residents were asked to write down on index cards before the meeting started. Richards repeatedly asked the residents in the crowd to try and refrain from calling out as he, Romski, and the DOE rep answered the questions, however his words fell on deaf ears as miffed residents stood and shouted as the panel in front of them tried to answer their questions. Parents said they were concerned for the safety of their children, especially if they were forced to send them a long ways away. “Those schools are not safe for our children!” One woman

shouted. As the meeting progressed, Romski tried to reason with the residents in his development. “The choice was either [Challenge Prep] or no school,” he said. For the next 20 minutes Romski and Richards tried to maintain order as residents booed, shouted, and wondered why they were left out of the loop when the decision was made that the school coming to their neighborhood was not going to be a primary school. According to Romski, the deal with Peninsula Prep fell apart years ago, but word never reached the residents or prospective buyers. Bill Burgos, a retired corrections officer, moved into Arverne by the Sea in February 2013. According to Burgos, when they bought their home they were told that a primary school was on its way. “Now I have to trek my granddaughter all the way to Middle Village to a catholic school that costs me thousands of dollars a year,” Burgos explained. Throughout the meeting Richards explained to the crowd that

he made it clear to Romski that he was in the wrong for not communicating with the residents sooner that things were changing. However, some residents claimed that Arverne by the Sea was still selling homes under the pretense that there would be a primary school in the neighborhood as late as 2014. Things culminated about 30 minutes into the meeting when most of those in attendance followed the lead of a man who stood up called for them to walk out and organize, rather than sit through the meeting. After the walkout, Richards called the meeting back to order and tried to get to the remaining questions, but it was evident that nothing he or Romski could say would appease the crowd. The meeting continued for another 30 minutes and as it went on, more and more residents stormed out with each unsatisfactory answer. One of the employees at Macedonia Baptist Church said that the church hosts plenty of meetings, but he had never seen anything quite like this.

Out Rockaway! A Local Outlet for the LGBTQ Community By Katie McFadden Rockaway is coming out! Out Rockaway is a new social group for locals in the LGBTQ community and those who support them. Back in December, a group of men, including Ed Mallon, John Ruscillo, Jim Burke, Tim Burke, Mike Lanza, Peter Golden and Edwin Brathwaite, formed Out Rockaway. Out Rockaway is a “social group make up of lesbian, gay, bi, everything,” spokesman Jim Burke said. “We’re welcome to everybody. We have members that are not gay, as well.” The group plans social parties and trips both within Rockaway and around the five boroughs. “We go to restaurants in Rockaway, we’ve done things outside like go to Alvin Ailey and we held a Super Bowl party. We’ve been doing things on a small scale while we develop our mission statement,” Burke said. “So far, it’s been a lot of fun.” Since they launched, the group has been laying the groundwork

for the organization and is ready to welcome more members. They will be participating in a few events this weekend to increase membership. On Saturday, June 6, the group will meet at Beach 106th street from noon to 5 p.m. for a beach day. On

Sunday, June 7, they’ll participate in the Queens Pride Parade, which kicks off at noon at 89th street and 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Out Rockaway plans to take advantage of all that Rockaway has to offer this summer, like paddle boarding classes, beach cleanups and the many bars and eateries around the peninsula. They’ll also do activities off the peninsula, such as seeing Broadway shows. “It’s great to go back and forth on the train and have a group of people to go back with,” Burke said. Out Rockaway offers a safe place where those of the LGBTQ community can feel comfortable and know that they’re welcome within the community. Burke says he’s been coming to Rockaway since 1977 and has noticed the community has become more welcoming in recent years. “Some might think Rockaway has a small-town mentality, but it’s a very welcoming community. I think Rockaway has become more open minded in the last 10-15 years. There’s been a big difference since I’ve been coming here and it’s wonderful,” Burke said. “It’s a great feeling to be in a small town that’s associated with openness and tolerance.” The group hopes to spread that message and let others know that it’s okay to be “out” in Rockaway and feel welcome. “There are people who don’t know that it’s okay to

be gay in Rockaway. I’ve been out all these years and everyone had been very supportive. I want people to know that its possible and they can live their lives openly and people can be accepted,” Burke said. Those interested in finding out more can check out www.outrockaway.com and sign up for the newsletter by clicking “Contact.” “Out Rockaway” is also on Facebook and they even accept regular mail at OUT Rockaway, P.O. Box 940194, Rockaway Beach, NY 11694.

Roll Baby Roll Dear Editor: Kudos to Rick Horan for the Bike Protest sign - - the regulations are silly. (No riding 10 to 6 on weekends and holidays!) In Riis Park you can bike on the boards and they have all new concessions. This rule is going to hurt businness between Low Tide and Rippers. Also the idea that you can rent a bike on 97th boards but can’t ride it makes no sense. It is not safe to ride on Shore Front! The bike lane is also dangerous; between the 120’s and 108 when you ride in the bike lane you are basically riding in the traffic with the cars; it is too narrow. So Rick and the Rockaway Times, please keep me posted on the upcoming bike restrictions protests, I will be there.. and join Team Rockapulco on the Epic Bike Ride which is Saturday July 25th and ends at Rippers on the Boardwalk! Thanks, Nancy Re

Dear Editor, Of course bikes should be allowed on the boardwalk at all times. I bought a condo on the beach largely because I wanted to ride (my adult tricycle) on the boardwalk! I’m 62 and I promise I will never run anyone over. We’ve been waiting so long for this boardwalk to be completed and now they want to ban bikes? It’s ridiculous and unjust. Joy Margulies Dear Editor, Let’s not throw out the bicyclists with the bath water. We can all agree that riding fast in crowds is dangerous. So let’s change the regulations to punish that activity and get rid of this ridiculous ban on weekends and holidays, and between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. too! Revising the restrictions to ban “dangerous” bike riding every day of the week will allow the rest of us to enjoy the dedicated lanes on our new boardwalk, 24/7. I trust that most cops can make that call. Rick Horan

Dear Editor, I was chased by parkies that tried to enforce the bike ban in the mid 1990’s. It is a joke and I believe it came into effect as a quality of life issue. They should really change their outlook and amend their thinking because the very deed of casually riding or cruising the boardwalk/ promenade is a privilege and a great example of the quality of life here in Rockapulco. However if parkies or police see bikers behaving in dangerous or irresponsible manners they should act by confiscating the bike or even a fine. Dave Lonergan Dear Editor, Our old boardwalk used to take us riders all the way to Beach 126th Street, which safely took us past the tight streets and traffic around Beach 112-120th Streets. Now we are being forced to share those streets with cars and buses. I’m not saying that there are very rude bike riders out there, but most of us are really respectful when we share the roads. Last summer I was actually hit by a car while riding my bike. It was a hit and run. It was one of the scariest experiences I’ve ever had to go through. When I came to and I was able to sit up all I felt was the blood rushing down my face. Even today I

still get a little scared when cars are getting that close to me. I have been waiting for the boardwalk to be rebuilt just so that I could take it past all the traffic, but knowing that they have banned bikes puts me in the exact same place that I was in last summer. I’m really hoping they reconsider their decision and we can safely ride our bikes again. Maria Dear Editor, It’s ridiculous that they’re banning bikes from the boardwalk! You forgot to mention the bike lanes on Rockaway Beach Blvd, it pushes the motorists to the middle of two narrow lanes. Who figured out that dangerous plan? Lila Rhyne Dear Editor, Bikes on the boardwalk is very important and I fully support this idea. Look at the boardwalk in Long Beach, people come out all day and exercise -- everyone is walking, running and biking. Adding bikes to the Rockaway Boardwalk will enhance the health of our residents as well as increasing our local economy by allowing people from all over Brooklyn and Queens to bike ride to Rockaway for lunch, dinner, and/or drinks. Dear Editor: I think that banning bikes is a good thing. When the weather is good and we have hundreds of children and adults riding on the boardwalk not following the rules people, especially older or disabled people who can not maneuver out of the way, can get severely injured. Also, in response to one of the statements in the report concerning bike riders not following the rules said to “ticket them.” Well that’s all well and good but who is going to ticket them the air or spirit police? There are not enough police to ticket the idiots on the road violating traffic laws. I think bikes belong on the side of the roadway where the cars are. If a bike can go over two miles an hour it belongs in the street. We have a perfect set up on Shore Front Parkway. That’s where the bikes should stay.

Many of those bikes can get up to 50 miles an hour. I knew someone who was hit with less speed than that. She is no longer with us. Bikes on the boardwalk are dangerous. The boardwalk is just that “a walk.” Annette C.

Wedding Cake AKA The Castle Dear Editor (Re: The Wedding Cake House article) I was born in Rockaway and that was my Grandfather’s house when I was a little girl. We did indeed call it “The Castle” and we loved to visit the family members who lived there, Including Uncle Tommy and Aunt Rosanne. Brings back fond memories of my home town. Small, unheralded acts of consideration and kindness such as the one described above are more the rule than an exception of life here in Broad Channel, making it such an amazing place to call home. Bon Voyage to Broad Channel resident Bruce Fuller as he departs for South Korea this week to attend a friend’s wedding. Bruce is looking forward to enjoying his favorite fermented Korean food, Kimchi, which is a dish made of vegetables with a variety of seasonings. Here’s hoping he packed several bottles of Pepto Bismol for his trip! The Broad Channel VFW PrinceWynn Post #260 will be hosting its second annual “Belmont Steaks” party This Saturday, June 6 from 12 Noon to 7 p.m. with steak sandwiches, hot dogs, knishes and drink specials. The weather forecast is looking good so come down and (hopefully) spend the afternoon soaking up the sun in the Post Yard while impressing your friends and neighbors with your extensive knowledge and experience playing the ponies and discussing whether or not American Pharaoh can become the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years! Post time for the running of the Belmont Stakes is approximately 6:50 p.m and you can enjoy the race on one of several large flat screen televisions in the Post Canteen! I think we can all agree than when the chips are down and the going gets tough, the people of Broad Channel band together as one helluva tight knit group of people with a common goal of making sure the needs of all members of our community are met. Hubert Humphrey once stated, “The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor.” Putting aside disasters and other assorted calamities that might beset our town from time to time, how much thought do we give to the everyday acts of kindness and consideration that are shown to each and every one of us by our neighbors in the normal course of our lives? Do we recognize them for what they are with thankfulness or do we simply take them for granted? Recently I had the opportunity to observe an ongoing conversation between several residents when it was mentioned that a Broad Channel neighbor who is dealing with several health issues and was having a difficult time in procuring a wheel chair through Medicare. The tone of the conversation immediately shifted from the normal, everyday gossip and banter of friends and became focused solely on the issue of the needed wheelchair. In less than 10 minutes, a wheelchair that was not being utilized was located and arrangements were made to deliver it to the neighbor in need the following day. After it was agreed by all that the problem had been satisfactorily dealt with, the conversation once again shifted back to good natured raillery.

Get Prepared; Get Informed In case you may not have noticed, summer has just about snuck up on us! This year in particular it seems as if so many of us have already forgotten the brutal winter and that it was one of the coldest on record. Of course with all of our gratitude toward Mother Nature’s mood swings, we must also remember that with the summer’s warm weather, she also brings along the hurricane season. Yes, sorry to bring that little fact up again. I bring it up because of many conversations I’ve had with so many neighbors and friends about storms that can and will hit the Rockaway peninsula and about being prepared. I can’t believe how many people I have spoken to who have no different storm preparation plan than they had a week before Hurricane Sandy changed most of their lives. So many people I know, to this day, do not have a generator on standby, do not have batteries by the case-full, do not have extra non-perishable food in storage and don’t even have a huge supply of sand bags just in case. I know, I know sand bags would be a joke against a Hurricane Sandy, but an Irene, a major Nor’easter? Sandbags could be a difference between three hours of shoveling sand and ducttaping your basement windows and $20,000 for a new heating system and sheetrock! Albert Einstein once said “insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Now I’m not saying that I have built a nuclear fall-out shelter. All I’m saying is an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! And yes, I do have a full

tank of gas for my generator and extra cans of baked beans in my closet, just in case! Speaking of prevention and taking proactive roles in our Rockaway lives, not only do we need to think about our lives today during storm season, but we need to think about and prepare for our children and their children who will be here when we are gone. On June 8 from 6-8pm at Floyd Bennett Field just over the Marine Parkway/Gil Hodges Bridge at 50 Aviation Road, Brooklyn, NY, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will be hosting an open house on a massive wind farm project just off our beaches. The proposal is to install nearly 200 wind turbines, 13 miles off the coast of the Rockaway Peninsula. This project has the potential of producing 700 Mega Watts of energy, with the potential of powering upwards of 240,000 homes and businesses. This open house is simply an outreach to introduce the project to residents who will be directly impacted by this project and who will directly benefit from the hundreds of jobs it can potentially produce.(Full disclosure: I am a Local 3 IBEW electrician… more full disclosure: I am a human being on planet Earth). You can pop in and view the presentation anytime between 6pm and 8pm! It is vital that as many of us on the Rockaway Peninsula and Broad Channel come out to show our support for this project or voice your opinion against it if you see fit. Especially as it is just the beginning stages of reality. Our input is vital, not only for Rockaway and Queens, but the planet!

Bike Adventures

Bike Ride Adventures: Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Thank you all for following my first bike ride adventure to Dead Horse Bay. I received some responses from people saying they would like to take the trip themselves, which is awesome! It really is a unique place and is just a short ride over the Marine Parkway Bridge. This week, I’m taking you across the other bridge on an adventure to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. On a very hot Friday afternoon, I asked my dad to lead the way to another area that he was familiar with. We hopped on our bikes and headed toward the Cross Bay Bridge on a roughly 4-mile ride from the Rockaway Times office. Wanting to catch some of the sea breeze, we followed the bike path along Rockaway Beach Boulevard and then Shore Front Parkway to Beach 94th Street and started heading toward the bridge. I don’t think I’ve ever ridden over the Cross Bay Bridge before, and if you’re like me, you might be in for a surprise, or at least, a great workout. The entrance to the pedestrian pathway is in front of Thai Rock on Beach 92nd. It then takes you up two very steep ramps to get to the main body of the bridge, followed by a slight uphill trip at least halfway through. There are signs posted on the bridge warning riders to dismount and walk their bikes, which is smart considering how steep some of the ramps are. It also gives you a chance to take in the amazing view of the bay. I took a photo of the boats and jet ski’s at Thai Rock and the Bungalow Bar and later showed it to someone who asked, “How did you get an

aerial shot?” Another new experience was riding a bike along Cross Bay Boulevard. For the most part, the northbound bike lane is a convenient ride, but there was section where the markings weren’t so clear and began to merge with traffic. Not wanting to take the chance of getting hit, I moved to the sidewalk at some points. When my dad and I made it to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which is after Broad Channel and the Call-A-Head headquarters, we were able to chain our bikes to a rack right outside the visitor center on the West side. Bikes aren’t allowed on the pathways. Inside the visitor center, we walked around and read the information boards before speaking to a friendly staffer at the front desk, who advised us where to go and told us what we might see along the way, like various sea birds. She told us that the loop pathway around West Pond is no longer a loop since Sandy. Jamaica Bay eroded some of the trail, causing a breach during the hurricane. Due to the erosion, the trail is now separated in two, with a short path about half-a-mile long and a long path that’s about three miles. We opted for the shorter walk. I’m not much of a birdwatcher, but if you are, the Wildlife Refuge is the place to go. There have been more than 300 recorded bird species seen at the Refuge in its history. If you forgot binoculars, there are some available to borrow at the visitor center. I saw some recognizable birds like the osprey in a Continued on page 26

Bike Ride Adventures: Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Continued from page 21

large nest, egrets, some Canadian geese, seagulls and sand pipers. We also found a tiny yellow and green bird poking its head out of one of the man made birdhouses on the trail. A black bird with red wings also peaked my curiosity but I had no idea what it was called. When I asked a staffer, he said it was a redwinged blackbird. Of course. What I appreciated most about the Wildlife Refuge was how tranquil it was. The only sounds you’ll hear are the songs and chirps of the birds and the gravel moving below your feet as you walk. You’ll also hear the occasional sound of traffic passing by on the boulevard, reminding you that you’re in a natural safe haven for animals, right in Queens. Once we reached the end of the path that was closed by Sandy, we headed back toward the visitor center and followed the longer

path until we got to the South Garden, which is an area heavily shaded by tall trees. There was a wooden bench in the middle, where we sat and appreciated the break from the sun on the hot day. Be sure to check out each corner and path of the garden. I went exploring one way and was surprised to find a raccoon taking a nap on top of a wooden box about 20 feet high. My dad went in another direction and found a goose family, with two adults and about eight fuzzy chicks waddling behind. We then decided to cross the boulevard to explore East Pond. We walked along a long, winding grassy trail until we reach a wooden footpath that led to the massive pond where about 25 swans were floating around. Unfortunately, most of them were on the opposite side of the pond, which was inaccessible. It was still an interesting sight to see as the A train passed

by in the background, not phasing the large white birds. You can also watch the planes take off from JFK Airport as seagulls fly by simultaneously, making it seem like they’re in a race. The seagulls put up a good fight, but the planes always win. If you’d like to check out the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, here is my advice: bring a hat and bug spray; although the mosquitoes are not around yet, the gnats were in full force. Don’t be afraid to ask the rangers questions at the visitor center; they were very knowledgeable and helpful. Bring water; you’ll need it on most bike rides, but you’ll especially want to stay hydrated while hiking around the

ProHealth Excellence Urgent Care Convenience

trails of the Wildlife Refuge. Wear good shoes; your feet won’t last in anything but sneakers or boots along the gravel paths. Bring a camera with a good zoom; you never know when you’ll see a photogenic creature, near or far. The trails are open every day from dawn to dusk and the visitor center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you don’t want to explore solo, visit http://www.nyharborparks.org/visit/jaba.html for a list of upcoming guided tours. If you have any suggestions for where I should go on my next bike ride adventure, shoot me an email at Katie@rockawaytimes. com.

Food Drive A Success

Boardwalk Was Always Desired

You might have to get out the reading glasses but as you can see locals were pushing for a boardwalk decades ago. The sign says: A Boardwalk In The Rockaway’s Is Great Improvement for Greater NY.

Bert Adams turned 100 and a celebration was held at JASA. Here’s Bert with his daughter, Diane.

008 8RT

Chris Reilly happened to be wearing a Bell’s Beach T-Shirt (honoring fallen firefighter Steve Belson) in Seattle when he came upon this intersection. It’s expected the 14th Annual Steve Belson Memorial Swim will be held in August. Stay tuned for details.

The 100th Precinct Community Council held a food drive on Saturday May 30th in front of Waldbaums on Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park. They collected bags of food along with cash donations totaling $230.50. Along with the bags of donated food all the cash donations will be used to purchase more and will be donated and delivered to the (JCCRP) Jewish Community Council Of The Rockaway Peninsula food pantry located in Far Rockaway. Once again the people of our great Community come through for people in need. Special thanks to Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. for also donating food. (Left to right in photo) Council V.P. Car Crash in Breezy Point 9904 ROCKAWAY BEACH BLVD. 917-566-1047 Open 7 Days A Week Mon-Sat 9am-9pm • Sunday 10am-6pm

Two young men were ejected from a vehicle after crashing into a fire hydrant in Breezy Point, according to Police, early Sunday morning. Police responded to a call of a single car collision at Beach 210th Street and Rockaway Point Boulevard at almost 4 a.m. on Sunday, June 1. “When the officer arrived, a 26-year-old man

who was ejected had trauma to the body and a 23-year-old had severe head trauma,” police said. The 26-year-old was taken to Kings County Hospital and was listed in stable condition. The 23-year-old was taken to Brookdale Hospital and as of Wednesday afternoon was reported to be in critical condition.

Another Surf Beach Update This past Tuesday night, the RBSA got to present our proposed surfing beaches to the Parks & Safety Committee of Community Board 14. It was great to see a turn out of our hardcore OG surfers, some of the newer surfing community members and representation from Locals Surf School, the two Mikes! The proposed beaches we presented were based on local surfers in the vicinity and also lifeguards familiar with the locations, 6062nd and 109-111th. The primary focus for us with those locations is that they are generally and consistently closed during the summer months, hence we didn’t see any harm opening those locations to be designated surfing beaches. Prior to this important meeting on Tuesday, Noreen Ellis of the Rockaway Beach Civic passed some vital information onto the RBSA for consideration. It was made known that some surfers visiting the vicinity of 60-62 Streets weren’t necessarily behaving too well. From using people’s hoses, leaving litter on the lawns, to even urinating on their property…don’t these idiots know you do it in your wetsuit before getting out! So clearly we need to be a self-policing entity if we are to garner the respect of residents and the community at large for these beach expansions. The other factor in this area was also parking issues for the residents, meaning lack of. After a meeting with Chris of the Averne By The Sea and Water’s Edge Associations, we came to a compromise. Rather than us demanding a two-block designated surfing zone, they didn’t want any designation of surfing or swimming till those new homeowners moved in and had a voice, which we totally respect. So after many questions back

and forth with the Committee, we recommended that until we have a discussion on this area later in the fall, we allow surfers to legally surf from 60-67 St’s from pre-dawn till 1pm, which is inherently the onshore eddy that generally blows out the surf to smithereens. This way the residents in that area, for when they come home, get some, if not all of their parking space back. A great compromise, and we dearly thank the Parks Dept. for being very receptive to this. Winning! As for the beach from 109-111th Streets, this was passed and agreed to with very little debate, except for two of the Committee members voicing concern that these might become prime real estate when beach goers rise in significant numbers. We’re were totally OK for re-visiting this in the future, should that be an issue, but this stretch of beach has been closed to swimmers for upwards of three to five years. And we also have proved that with the opening of surf beaches, there are surf-enomic factors that come with it. So there you go! All of this goes before a vote next Tuesday June 9, 7pm at the Knights of Columbus on 90th Street. How it gets “officially” announced by the Parks Dept., if it gets the vote, I will let you know here in this column. But as for now, this is a humungous win and further allows us some comfort, that we can spread out a little more and be that much safer. Please turn up to the meeting on Tuesday. Yes this is NYC, yes we’re all ridiculously busy professionals, but put other things aside for an hour or two and get involved to show your support for these beaches we’ve fought hard for up to this date.

This past summer, St. Edmund Prep received a conditional financial gift from an anonymous donor. The caveat was that the funds were to be used by students for the express purpose of investing in the U.S. stock market. After classroom instruction that centered on technical analysis, quarterly earnings impacts, a sound management structure, dividend paying companies, an investment strategy and several months of virtual trading…the team was ready to go live. An online trading account was opened and a real world investing

experience began.

THANK YOU

Marshal Stephen W. Biegel 109 W. 38th Street, Suite 200 New York, NY 10018 Office: (212) MARSHAL (627-7425) Fax: (212) 398-2000 NYC@marshalbiegel.com www.NewYorkCityMarshal.com

“Upon awakening, let the words ‘Thank You’ flow from your lips, for this will remind you to begin your day with gratitude and compassion.” –Wayne Dyer I made it a practice a long time ago to say to myself some things I was grateful for right before going to sleep. This, along with some deep belly breaths really puts you in a happy state to sleep. When I read the quote above, I thought how great it is to also wake up that way! Waking up, being able to move, think, feel, smell, see, hear, are all gifts. Some have all, some have fewer, but, what we got is what we got. Being grateful and looking inward with compassion promotes positive cellular energy translating to good health and happiness. The conscious effort or determination to be grateful and have compassion for oneself helps to lift our awareness of being. Some things may be hanging over us at night and in the morning – life happens, there are choices we made that have us in certain circumstances. There are life events that happen to parents, kids, friends, partners that may be trying for a time. This is life. And we have a choice as to how we deal. We can wake up and say Thank You – that’s a good choice. Even these trying things are gifts because when some time passes and we have a chance to contemplate, there is usually a learning that presents itself. Cultivate an aura of good feeling, of love, of healing and even the hard,

hard life events will become soft and light. As my friend pointed out: “there is a zen saying ‘take nothing personally’ – understanding that people are responding and reacting from where they are in their minds and when you understand that, you don’t take things personally and you become the creator of and not the victim of your own world. Three people can see the same event and they will all see it differently, depending on who they are.” I don’t know how we get into the habit, but we do – we take things personally and can be dwelling on something we cannot change, we really don’t understand because we’re viewing it in a way it was probably not intended to be, or whatever, and that sometimes comes to sleep with us and wakes up with us. So, there are a lot of learnings to get to the place where we can be peaceful at sleep and call upon all things we’re grateful for and then after a night’s sleep to wake up and say “Thank You!” Being in tune to our beings – getting to know and feel the harmony of what the body is with what the mind is eventually leads to a soulful spiritual happiness. It is a journey, a life’s journey. “There is no need for temples, no need for complicated philosophies. My brain and my heart are my temples; my philosophy is kindness.” --Dalai Lama Question/comment: Email us at BeWellBeHappy2@gmail.com

Weatherproofing your home Most people think of weatherproofing your home as something you do for the winter, weatherproofing for the summer is just as important. Proper weatherproofing in the summer can reduce your cooling cost drastically. Weatherproofing for the summer and winter is basically the same with minor changes. Steps to general waterproofing: 1- Check caulk around windows and doors (both inside and outside). Where needed, remove old caulk and recaulk. 2- Check all doors leading to the outside and garages. If there is a gap between the door and the floor, install a door sweep (the kind with the rubber strip is best). If there are gaps around the sides or the top of the door, install selfstick weather stripping. 3- Make sure all windows are closing properly. If windows do not close properly, you can use some foam insulation to fill the gaps in the summer. In the winter you may need to put plastic over the windows. 4- Is there a lot of sun coming through the window? In the winter that is good, it will help keep the

house warm. In the summer the sun shining through adds a lot of heat to your house. You may want to keep the blinds closed during warmer days to help cool down the house. 5- Service your heating and/or cooling system once a year (at the beginning of each season). Make sure the filters are clean as well as the coils. 6- If you have any exposed duct, it is always a good idea to make sure they are insulated. You can lose a lot of heating and cooling through uninsulated ducts. 7- Check all storm doors, make sure they close properly and there is little to no light coming through around the edges. Some local services offer home checks for reasonable rates, some will even deduct the cost of the home check from the price if you end up needing work done. So if you’re unable to check everything for yourself, call someone in, it may save you more than you end up paying. Next week we will be making available to our readers a full DIY interior home checklist, covering almost everything in the home. If you have something you would like me to cover in The DIYer, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com

An Irish generation has stepped forward to tell their missing chapter of Rockaway’s Wedding Cake House. Turns out, the home is so popular, and the initial story generated so much positive feedback, that it deserves a follow-up to share more of its history to inquiring minds. While the house undeniably has a wedding cake style, many locals refer to it as The Castle. To some, the house at 401 Beach 117th Street is known as “Fitzgerald’s Castle.” It was purchased by John Fitzgerald in 1937 for $5,000 and “the rest when they catch you,” according to his granddaughter, Terri Lee Fitzgerald Terry. Classic Irish humor. Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a mortgage on it. John Fitzgerald owned the home (as well as Fitzgerald’s Bar & Hotel on 108th Street) for decades and eventually sold it to his sister, Catherine Fitzgerald Royce, for $60,000. During the war, Fitzgerald rented out the castle’s basement to a nonprofit called The United Service Organization (USO). Their mission was to support the morale and socialization of soldiers. Dances, courtship, and fun recreational activities were held here for the troops, most likely every Saturday night, because of the bar, large dance floor, and men’s and

women’s bathrooms. The gas company volunteered to create the Newport Avenue side basement entrance for the USO and, according to Fitzgerald Terry, the workers “burnt out, drill after drill, cutting through the granite.” Lonely servicemen’s lives were changed by chance companionship and some later marriages were held right here in Fitzgerald’s Castle. According to another fan of the great house, Teresa Coyne Moran, this same basement held a speakeasy during the Prohibition. Some find irony in the fact that the same space later became a doctor’s office. None other than Lew Simon, Rockaway’s Democratic District Leader, rented an office in Fitzgerald’s Castle for his first race in 1982. Jimmy Stroud Senior, remembers the interior being all red and metal when he lived there. Although not all verified, we heard The Lamms (co-owners of Shore Cabs on 116th Street), Hogans, Bennetts, and Farrells were among the many families who once occupied the castle, as well. And Police Officer Patrick McMinman rented a room for a decade before Bill Door moved in. We heard from many other readers who want to own the house. Or not own it but rent it out for parties! If ever a house captured imagination this would be the one!

Long Time Locals – Belle Harbor’s Mini Mall not compete with the bigger box stores. A solution was soon found through the inclusion of bicycles. The bike shop now includes equipment from several dealerships, namely Jamis bicycle dealership, Fuji bicycles, Nerve bicycles, Phat Cycles Authorized Dealers, and Sun dealership. While bikes, a common mode of transportation in Rockaway, made for a busy business, the introduction of a flower shop brought in a whole new variety of customers and gave the mid-block a business boost, especially when bikes are put away for the cold seasons. With the business both rolling and blossoming, things changed when Hurricane Sandy struck. The entire shop was devastated. It’s been a slow, hard climb back. However, Maroney says, his aim is “to grow back to where we were, bigger and better.” This goal is evident and out front as the improved Mini Mall includes a decorative fence and gate designed by artist Geoff Rawling. Artistic gate aside, Maroney certainly understands the meaning behind the saying, “If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,” as he notes that one of his toughest challenges, other than the repercussions of Sandy, have been finding good help. “Basically I do everything myself,” he states. If evidence of his hard work is needed, just look at the grease on his hands, and you will know there is truth behind every word. His authenticity and personal pride in his work are just two of the reasons he’s made it – and made it he has for 36 years and counting. So stop in, grab a bike, and be sure to fill your basket with flowers for a friend! (This feature was written by Sarah Boyle interning with The Rockaway Times for the summer. She will be entering her sophomore year at Lehigh University in the fall. Sarah will be profiling other businesses that have operated for 25 years or more in Rockaway).

Irish Culture Day on Saturday Didn’t get enough Irish culture at last week’s Irish festival? Or maybe you just want some more? Saturday, June 6 is Irish Culture Day. From 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., there will be a packed schedule of Irish music, Irish dance, Irish language and other entertainment at the Knights of Columbus (333 Beach 90th Street). The lineup includes Niall Mulligan, Annmarie Acosta, Matt Mancuso, Dave Barckow,

Jonathan Srour, James Keane and a special performance by St. Cecelia’s. The event is being held to help send St. Cecelia’s to County Sligo in August for the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil, which they have qualified for. The group is made up of young traditional Irish musicians, led by Acosta and Mulligan. The money raised will help offset the cost of travel expenses. Saturday’s event is $20 for adults and free for children.

The Mini Mall, located at 430 Beach 129th Street is anything but “mini.” Filled with big personality, big bicycles from various dealerships, and big floral arrangements, the trustworthy John Maroney and wife Laura are there to satisfy any customer’s needs. At first glance, the Mini Mall seems to be a flower shop, but looks may be deceiving. This may be the first ever bicycle flower shop. For John and Laura Maroney, it has been a long strange trip combining the seemingly incompatible businesses. Although the bike shop found its footing in 1979, the Garden center soon rode alongside it in 1985, with Laura at its core. John handles the majority of the bicycle shop. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, the store is brimming with beach cruisers with coaster brakes, as well as seven speed brakes, with an array of both steel frames and lightweight aluminum frames. The bicycle shop has a focus on adult equipment and accessories, for all cycling needs. But before you can get to the bicycles, you have to meander your way through the forest of hanging perennial and annual plants. In the spring time, there is an abundance of tropical feeling with palm trees and daffodils, but come late fall they give way to evergreens and Christmas music. With its 36 years in business, one could consider the Mini Mall a Rockaway landmark, becoming a staple in the community throughout its years. Owner John Maroney assures, “We are not leaving the neighborhood.” Maroney emphasizes the excellent support he has received from the community, stating, “They can trust me, it’s a good feeling when you’re trusted.” This remarkable support has allowed the bicycle/floral shop to recover from various challenges. Beginning as a small hardware store, Mini Mall soon found it could

Bacon Wrapped Gouda Stuffed Chicken Breasts By Sharon Feldman

Servings: 4 4 boneless chicken breasts 4 slices bacon 3 -4 ounces smoked gouda cheese 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon pepper Sprinkle with bread crumbs or panko crumbs or crushed pretzels (use your imagination) Directions: Combine, cayenne, garlic pow-

der, paprika and pepper. Flatten chicken breasts to approximately 1/4” thickness. Season both sides of chicken with the cayenne mixture. Place small piece(s) of cheese on chicken and roll up, pressing firmly. Wrap each stuffed breast with a bacon slice, and then brown over medium heat until bacon just begins to crisp. Remove from pan from heat; drizzle breadcrumbs of your choice, put in oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

for the tourists that will come this summer to relax after having fun at the beach. The pink haired owner Matthew Blance decided to embrace the Rockaway Beach vibe and managed to put it all into one shop, which is something that I appreciated. For the food, it’s all homemade breakfast and brunch food. I decided to try the banana bread which I hear is already getting some buzz for how delicious it is. And with it, a Pita-taco. First, the banana bread… Amazing! It was soft and not overbearingly sweet, it was just perfect; definitely something I recommend if you’re on Beach 96th. Now, I know you’re wondering what a “pita-taco” is. Well, it’s basically pita bread as a healthy substitute for the taco shell, ready for the

for the filling. I decided to get the avocado, bacon and tomato pita taco… So good! I’m still shocked when I think that I will definitely choose this over a regular taco. Now that’s saying something. If you’re on Restaurant Row then I recommend going to Anna Bow, located on 9519 Rockaway Beach Blvd Rockaway Peninsula, NY 11693 and enjoy their amazing food and awesome atmosphere. For my next review, it will be somewhere off “restaurant row”, so stay tuned to see where I go next! (Sheneca Sharpe is a high school senior at Rockaway Park High School. She is interning at The Rockaway Times for the summer and will be attending SUNY-Fredonia in the fall).

Bowling League Season Recap Just What the SPIN DOCTORS Ordered By Joe Hanna The SPIN DOCTORS have closed out the 2014-2015 season with their second championship in three years, having also finished first in the 2012-13 season. They defeated the ALLEY CATS 5-2 in a hotly contested championship series on the final night. After dropping games one and two, the ALLEY CATS fought back, taking game three. However, Randy Koenig’s 244 in game two and 598 series gave the SPIN DOCTORS the total wood for the three game series and the extra point needed to secure a first place finish. The ALLEY CATS loss dropped them into a second place tie with THE FUN GHOULS, who bested the MOTHER STRIKERS 5-2 and just narrowly missed a first place tie and a one game roll-off with the SPIN DOCTORS. THE FUN GHOULS won two tight games to start but fell 19 pins short in game three as the MOTHER STRIKERS rallied to salvage 2 points for the night. The 5-2 loss dropped the MOTHER STRIKERS into a three way tie for eighth place along with WINTER BOCKERS and BIPOLAR ROLLERS. SPLIT HAPPENS squeaked by SPARE TIME 4-3 and into fourth

place. SPARE TIME dropped into a fifth place tie with SPARE PARTS. SPARE PARTS won their first two games against ROXBURY BOOKMARKS but settled for a tie in game three for a 6-1 series victory. CORP? defeated WINTER BOCKERS 4-3 securing a share of fifth place for CORP?. No, this is not a misprint. Their team name ends with a question mark, wreaking havoc with my spell checker. The high scores of note for the evening included games by Richie Duemig (HAPPY TREES) 233, Brian Beehler (SCRUB DADDY) 224, and Joe Casale (SPARE PARTS) 211 for the men and Eileen Baumann (F.F.B.’s) 186, Christine Pye (SPLIT HAPPENS) 180, Katie Casale (SPARE PARTS) 179, and Maryann Appel (MISFITS) 179. This year’s award for best team bowling shirts is a tie between SPARE TIME’s Hawaiian themed floral design and BOWLERINAS tutu fringed ensemble. The “I Need a Life” awards (those who bowled every night this season) go to: ■ Sue Bach (GUTTER GANG) ■ Eileen Lennon (ROXBURY BOOK-

Big Ron’s bait & tackle, Howard Beach: We called up Big Ron and he said that there are some striped bass in the bay, as well as on the outside along the beach, “they are bringing them in.” Ron also said that the amount of porgies in the area is increasing. “They’re not great but they’re getting better.” Ron also said that the fluke action has slowed down a little “It’s still good but not as crazy as it was last week.” Ranger VI - home port Sheepshead Bay: Ranger VI reports many fluke being taken aboard with a mixture of “shorts” and “keepers.” Ocean Eagle V - home port Sheepshead Bay: Captain Greg reports that he’s going for “Ling and Cod,” and that the Ling are doing very well. Ocean Eagle V has not started to go out for porgies yet but, Captain Greg said that he will be doing that soon. Please remember that others use the beach and bay. Always take all of your trash (unused bait, containers, hooks and mono-filament line) with you when leaving the beach or bay. Never throw trash overboard. AHOY ROCKAWAY! Water temperature: 60*F at entrance to NY Harbor (15 NM SE of Breezy Point) We hope all of our Rockaway Anglers (and non-anglers) had a great weekend. The sunny days got cooler and the wind picked up as we moved on into the weekend. Things started to turn sour after 2:00 pm on Sunday as thunderstorms were not far off to our west. Rain showers finally arrived early Monday morning. Weather and sea conditions were a bit “off” for fishing in many places this past weekend as the wind picked up and it got a bit “snotty” for small craft. We contacted our stations, and here’s what they had to report. Paul Tarramino (Pauly T.), Jamaica Bay: Paul reports that he was fishing Jamaica Bay on Saturday and the bite was “off” for him. Paul reported a few sea robins around but, that was it! I asked if he had gotten “skunked,” and Paul said “yes you could say that,” so we did. Bernie Matzen (east of Atlantic Beach Bridge): Bernie went out on Saturday and fished east of Deb’s Inlet to the Lido Beach Golf Course (on the inside). Bern reported windy conditions making the fishing difficult. Bern tells us that he had many fluke by the Lido Beach golf course but, many of the fluke were “shorts” and they were returned to the water. Bernie did finish the day on a good note by

EVEN THE BIRDS were waiting for better conditions.

From the Cheap Seats: Bad New Yorker

June 6 • 8:30pm

By Michael Leboff

Depending on how you look at it, New York is either blessed or cursed with at least two teams in hockey, baseball, basketball, and football (and now futbol, too). That is a lot of sports teams, sure, but New York has a lot of people. Just a shade over eight million of them. This overload of sports teams changes the complexion of the sports landscape here in the Big Apple. If you are a Detroiter you probably root for Detroit’s teams. If you are a Dallasite, you support the teams Big ‘D’. But this is New York, it is never that simple. Across the pond, having more than one team in a city is not uncommon. Take soccer-crazed London, for example. There were six London-based teams that played in the Barclays Premier League (English football’s top division) this season. Six. And each one of these teams has its own distinct fan base that hates all of the other London teams with an undying hatred that would make the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry look like a mildly disagreeable chat between friends. In Europe they call these fierce local rivalries “derbies” and each year when the schedule gets released, fans and players alike circle the derby days and make sure their day is clear for battle against their fellow Londoners. Does this make them a bad Londoner? Absolutely not. In fact, if a Tottenham fan was found out to be rooting for Arsenal, then they would be a bad Londoner. That same sentiment should hold true in New York.

As a devout Islander fan, it is in my nature to loathe everything about the New York Rangers. Not only do I root against the Rangers when they play my Islanders, but I root against them every time they step out on the ice (with the rare exception of when a Ranger win helps the Islanders). Sometimes I question whether I love the Islanders more than I hate the Rangers. Inevitably hate-rooting against a team in your home city leads to awkward situations. Throughout the spring a co-worker or a neighbor on a coffee line would say something like, “how about those Rangers?” to me. I could just as easily play along and nod, but I don’t. After I explain to them that I hate the Rangers more than any other sports team on the planet, they usually say something like “How can you root against a New York team? You’re a bad New Yorker.” Unfortunately for Islander fans (and Devil fans for that matter), the Rangers have made a habit out of making postseason runs these past few seasons. Last year they made it to the Stanley Cup Final and this year they were one win away from a return trip. As the rest of the city got up to get behind the Rangers, Islander fans (the good ones, at least) were relegated to hate-rooting. Hoping like hell that the Rangers season would end without hardware. This included rooting for the Washington Capitals just days after the Caps had brutally eliminated the Islanders in a seven game series. It wasn’t easy, but it is who we are. And it is that authenticity that makes us great New Yorkers.

Dr. Marjorie J. Hill has taken over as the new CEO of The Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center. Hill, who started at her new position last month, has over two decades of experience in hospital management, program administration, and community development. Hill replaces Peter Nelson who was removed by the Board in January, 2013. According to Betty Leon, the Addabbo Board of Directors Vice-Chair, Hill was selected after a rigorous national search process that spanned six months. “Dr. Hill is a passionate leader with the expertise, motivation, and enthusiasm needed to bring the Addabbo

Family Health Centers into the forefront of Health Centers in Southeast Queens, Brooklyn, and Far Rockaway,” Leon said. “It is an honor to have been selected by the Addabbo Board of Directors to lead this truly exceptional organization of dedicated and talented, health care and health promotion professionals,” Dr. Hill said. “With outstanding board leadership and our longstanding government and community partners, I am confident we will attain the strategic planning goal of making the Addabbo Family Health Center, Inc., number one in the nation.”

RLL Regular Season Climax: All Star Games and Last Week of Games With the All Star Games on Friday night and a series of critical pennant race contests, the Rockaway Little League regular season is coming to an exciting finish. In the Minor Boys division, the Conte’s Carpets Pirates (8-1) took a big step toward clinching first place with a pair of key victories. On Sunday, the Bucs edged the second place Servpro Reds (6-3) in a 13-10 slugfest. Ryan Ehret pitched three solid innings for the division leaders. Dylan Loconte pitched the rest of the game and got a triple and a single. Luke Carson hit a grand slam. Max Levy made a great catch at first base to save the game for the Pirates. Jake Roventini made a great catch at shortstop to make a double play. Marco Conti got a big triple. Nicholas Fiore made a good play at second base to save a run. It was an all-around team effort. Three days earlier, the Pirates notched another high-scoring win over the Ridgewood Savings Bank White Sox (5-4). The Pirates prevailed 1411. Max Levy pitched, so did “Machine Gun” Phil Kelly, as did Jake

Roventini. Matt Sweeney, playing catcher all season long, has been solid. Dylan Loconte had three hits with an inside the park home run. It was 7-7 going into the bottom of the third inning. The Pirates kept on hitting. Matt Sweeney got a hit, Ryan Ehert got a single, Machine Gun Kelly got a hit for an RBI, and the hits kept on coming. Rojas has been solid all year with his glove making many saves for the Pirates. The Kennedy brothers, Luke and Nathaniel, showed lots of heart. Luke had a nice hit for an RBI. The Graybeards Reds also advanced to 8-1, in Minor Girls softball. They defeated the Stop and Shop Rockies 10-6 behind strong pitching by Caitlin Mullen, Sarah Allison and Kelsie Price. The hitting standouts were AJ Crowley, Katrina Mullally and Amy Whelan. Niki Morterella and Marin Crowley got game balls for outstanding play. The victory kept the Reds safely ahead of the second place Walsh Properties Orioles. In other Minor Boys action, the El Caribe Dodgers knocked off the Belle Harbor Yacht Club Athlet-

ics 13-3 to snap a six-game slide. Pitchers Matthew Steiner, Aiden McCormack and Eddie Coyne combined to limit the A’s to three runs. The Dodgers bats finally came to life with Charlie Smith (3for-3 including a double and four RBIs), Matt Steiner (3-for-3, a double three runs scored) and John Kelly (4-for-5 including a triple and four RBIs) doing the biggest damage. Brendan Jones, Jack Conrath and Chris Davila came up with key

defensive plays on the game. DIAMOND DUST: Rockaway Little League is again selling pink socks to raise funds for members of our Little League community who are battling the disease.
