Adam Kenworthy, chef and reality TV surfing hoverboard runs on battery, star, came to Rockaway last Sunday to goes 25 mph and costs $12,000. He was try out his hydrofoil made by Lift. The quite the engaging fellow. A local asked him if he could try the $12,000 machine and Kenworthy said, “Sure.” The local guy gave it a good shot but it takes a while before you can fly over the water like Marty McFly. You might enjoy Kenworthy in a white tuxedo flying around the East River by checking out his Instagram account.

WISE CLOCK RETURNS It’s about time! After several months of renovations, the Wise Clock is back at Riis Park and is as good as new. The historic clock, believed to be built in the 1890s, has been an icon at Riis Park since it was installed on the boardwalk in 1941. It received even more recognition when it was featured in a Cracker Jack commercial in the ‘60s and ‘70s. However, after several years of wear and tear, it was time for a tune up. The clock was removed in October and underwent restoration at Scott Kreilick’s studio. On Wednesday, June 5, it was reinstalled on the Riis boardwalk. Irish Fest Rocks Rockaway Beach By Katie McFadden

Last weekend’s 7th Annual Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point Irish Festival was not one to be missed. With local musicians, rock stars, traditional Irish bands and more all taking the stage over the two-day event, the festival was another big win for AOH Division 21, who organized it, and all who came

out to show their support. With Saturday’s forecast calling for clear skies, the first day of the festival drew in big crowds at St. Camillus. For the first time, many local musicians took the stage with Brianne Rogers, Walter Ensor and Gerald Bair joining popular party favorite, Wine With Sue for the opening. Shilelagh Law kept the party going by playing

their original tunes and even inviting some local youth on stage to join them, including a local girl named Brighid who added some ukulele into the mix. The Breezy Point Pipes and Drums band entertained with traditional Irish music, while O’Malley’s Irish Dance Academy impressed with their high kicks and jigs later

on. Joe Hurley’s All-Star Irish Rock Revue brought an all-star mashup of musicians to the stage, playing songs by popular Irish bands and rock classics. The bit included some “Rockaway Royalty,” with musicians like Bobby Butler and Danny Mulvanerty from Indaculture Continued on page 45

Tom Brady, the famous quarterback, has applied to trademark the name Tom Terrific. Even die-hard Yankee fans would agree there is only one Tom Terrific and that is Tom Seaver. Even die-hard Tom Brady fans must know this is lame! ***** There’s an actual race in the campaign for Queens District Attorney. The primary, which in Democratic Queens, is the de facto general election, is on June 25. Melinda Katz, Gregory Lasak, Rory Lancman, and Tiffany Caban all have received support in Rockaway. The Queens for Justice Ad Hoc Committee is holding a debate on Monday, June 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the

Solutions Not Shelters Dear Editor: Rockaway Solutions not Shelters is asking all of Rockaway to step up and please continue to donate money in order to pay our ongoing legal expenses. We must stop this shelter from opening on Beach 101st Street, and time is of the essence. According to a DHS representative speaking at a recent District 27 Community Education Council meeting, they are aiming at opening the shelter in September. We have retained lawyer Eric Palatnik P.C. to handle our legal case but additional funding is necessary to do this right. The fight has just started, there is no contract signed for this shelter, and

now is the time to show your support. I want to thank all of the people in Rockaway and our local businesses that have donated thus far, but to those who haven’t yet, we need your help. Award to Be Named For Local Teen’s Grassroots Efforts By Katie McFadden

The college essay is a regular part of the application process for high school students taking the next steps towards their future. The subject usually includes a personal experience that helped shape that candidate into who they are. But few, if any, can say their college essay was about spearheading an annual fundraising effort since age eight. However, that’s exactly what Rockaway resident, Samantha Colleran did. And she’ll be entering SUNY Oneonta with another accomplishment to her name—having an award named after her. When she was in third grade, Colleran was captivated by a show called the Nickelodeon Halo Awards, in which youngsters like herself were highlighted for spearheading a small effort to better their community, which grew into something bigger. Instantly inspired, she thought of ways that she too could make a small change. That’s when her

mother’s friend’s daughter, Nola Iacobelli, came to mind. The little girl was born with Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic condition that typically affects the heart (cardio-), facial features (facio-) and skin (cutaneous). CFC is so rare, that it is believed it only occurs in one out of every 810,000 individuals, and there are only about 300 known cases around the world.

At just eight, Colleran knew she wanted to do something to bring attention to the disease that so few know about, but that impacts Nola’s life every day. So she started a business that many young Rockaway entrepreneurs engage in—she sold seashells by the seashore. “I started by finding shells on the beach and painting them with different designs and selling them at my neighbor’s Fourth of July party,” Colleran said. Neighbors were instantly supportive. “My neighbor, Billy, jokingly told people that they wouldn’t be able to get food at the party unless they showed him a shell that they bought,” she said. In her very first year of selling shells, Colleran made $150 to donate to CFC International, one of the few organizations that provides support, research and education for this rare disease. Colleran’s seashell sales expanded into other items like bracelets, and other neighborhood kids got on board by donating other handmade items

to be sold. The effort was a huge success with Colleran raising as much as $600 one summer, but like with everything else, Hurricane Sandy put a damper on her efforts when her garage full of arts and crafts supplies was destroyed. But that wouldn’t stop her. “The year of the storm, we were so jammed up with everything, but it became clear that this had become something very important to Samantha,” Samantha’s mother, Rachel Colleran said. “Even with everything trashed around us, she was so concerned that we’d have to take a break from raising money for CFC and she wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Instead, Colleran simply re-directed her efforts by starting something that couldn’t be destroyed—a walkathon. Colleran held the first walkathon, from Beach 149th to Beach 129th and back, right after Sandy, in the spring of 2013. “We started out with just about 20 people, but we raised about Continued on page 11

The walkathon became an annual event and grew into a huge success, with Colleran raising $9,000 at the 2018 event. However, at this year’s walkathon in April, Colleran made an announcement to her supporters that it would be the last walkathon for a while. Colleran will be attending college starting in August, which will put a temporary pause on her walkathon efforts, but that doesn’t mean she’s putting it behind her. She says she’ll look into starting fundraising efforts in college. After all, raising awareness and funding for CFC has become a big part of what makes Samantha, Samantha. “With college visits and everything else going on in junior year, I told her that it might be too much to do the walkathon this year and I suggested that she not do it and she started crying and said, ‘why would you

say that? Of course, I’m going to do it.’ It’s something that’s really become a part of her,” Rachel Colleran said. It’s so much a part of her, that Colleran decided to make it the subject of her college essay. “I wrote about how this whole experience has made me grow up. There’s always going to be someone who’s known as the smart one or the athletic one, and you struggle to find your own thing, but you don’t have to be those things to make a change or do something big. However, for Colleran, raising money has been just a small part of this experience. It’s really about who she started this for. “After the walk this year, Nola’s mom, Jenny, asked how I felt about it being the last walkathon

for a while and I said, ‘It really sucks.’ She said to me, ‘I always thought that Nola was here to teach me something, but I think that she came into this world to teach you something,’” Colleran recalled, adding that she teared up after Jenny’s remarks. After the walk, Jenny told Colleran one more thing. During CFC International’s Family Conference, an event that brings together patients with CFC and their families, medical professionals and others, an award will be given away to a non-family member of someone with CFC, who has gone above and beyond to help the cause. The award will be called the Samantha Colleran Care and Community Award. Colleran will be attending the conference from July 10-13 in Tampa Bay, Fl., to present the award in her name, to the worthy recipient. “This is really humbling and it’s such an honor. Adil insists that he would not feed the public anything that he wouldn’t feed his family. And by the looks of the menu, Adil’s family eats well. The cuisine will represent elements of Adil’s Greek and Egyp-

This means Kimo’s utensils, plates, straws, and even to-go packaging will be environmentally friendly. Adil and Rambaran aim for a soft opening this weekend, and welcome all to enjoy it. “I want everybody in the community to enjoy the food,” Adil said.

With the new summer season in full swing, Rockaway welcomes some new faces and a resurrection of activity in places that were closed over the winter. One such place, that faced a permanent closure, is about to be resurrected as an even bigger, better restaurant in Rockaway Beach’s Restaurant Row. Mike Adil, formerly the owner of Paninico on Beach 116th, is ready to open Kimo’s Kitchen, a new Mediterranean place on Beach 92nd and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Adil, an Egyptian immigrant who once cooked for a Greek prime minister, is starting this new venture following the closing of Paninico after five years of business. Kimo’s will focus on authentic and healthy Mediterranean cuisine. “I couldn’t be more excited than I am,” said Adil standing at the front of the nearly-finished restaurant. Adil came to New York in the 1980s. After his restaurant in Manhattan closed, Adil found a chef’s position at Bon Appetit on Beach 129th. He worked there for a year and a half. Mohammad Kidim, owner of Beach Bagels, helped him find the place on 116th that eventually became Paninico. Adil commutes to Rockaway from Brooklyn, but Rockaway’s sand has firmly cemented itself under his skin. “I love it here, I'm addicted to it,” he said. Adil says the new place will have a simple and streamlined menu that is affordable, healthy, and more authentic to the food he grew up on. After closing Paninico last year due to increased rent costs, Adil realized it was time to open up

a new place. He got in touch with Javed Rambaran, a JHS 180 alumni and longtime Rockaway resident who has invested in business around the Beach 90s. Rambaran had the spot on Beach 92nd available and became Adil’s business partner for Kimo’s. “This is something that we don’t have locally,” Rambaran said. “If this were any other business, I would have said no, it wouldn't have made sense, but I think what Mike is doing is perfect for where we are.” The restaurant’s name, Kimo’s Kitchen, comes from the nickname for Mike Adil’s son, Kareem. “I want to pass it to the new generation,” Adil said. “And Mike’s doesn't sound too authentic,” joked Rambaran. Family is always important to Adil. Both of his daughters helped out waitressing and working at Paninico, and will probably help out at the new place as well. According to Tyree, the Robinsons learned the art of cooking from their mom, and it became a passion. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Food was always a positive experience in our home, and cooking is a family tradition that passed on to each generation. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve worked in restaurants for over 12 years, but my brother and I shared the same dream to open our own place, where we could serve the food that we were reared on, and finally Bernadetteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s became a reality,â&#x20AC;? RAA Features Two Unique Exhibits Some great things are taking place at the Rockaway Artists Alliance studios. The RAA is currently running two exhibits, Michelle Zassenhaus’ Fathom and Stories in Print, right in Fort Tilden. Last weekend, Zassenhaus’ solo show, “Fathom,” made its debut. This is the second RAA solo show for the Brooklyn-based photographer and multi-media artist. Fathom, meaning (1) to deeply understand and (2) a measure of the depth of water, is a double entrendre for Zassenhaus’ exploration of the Rockaway peninsula. In her series, “Ten Hours,” Zassenhaus places pinhole cameras at the water’s edge to record 10-hourlong exposures, piling time onto the surface of the film, resulting in large-scale beach horizons that resonate like color field paintings, meditative trances, even breath itself. Also presented: “(Untitled) Rockaway Series,” an ongoing series of thematic es-

This fosters the mind to imagine beyond the boundaries of printing and admire simultaneously. Printmaking techniques represent various forms of intaglio, aquatint, monoprint, lithography, silkscreen, photography, book arts, pen and ink, sculptural, experimental processes and installations. Far Rock Nonprofit Director Charged With Embezzlement Not every good deed comes with good intentions. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, on May 10, Semeo Doe, the former Executive Director of the Action Center for Education and Community Development, Inc. (Action Center) in Far Rockaway, was charged with embezzling, and conspiring to embezzle, hundreds of thousands of dollars from that charity for his personal use. Doe was arrested that day. As is alleged in the indictment, between 2010 and May 2019, Doe served as a Director, and as the Executive Director of Action Center, a not-for-profit organization that provided services to children and young adults, and provided meals to individuals in need. Doe allegedly embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars of Action Center funds to pay for personal expenses including international vacations, jewelry, luxury cars and cosmetic surgery. As part of the scheme, he also caused Action Center to submit reimbursement requests for costs

that were not incurred — including financial compensation for two employees for work allegedly performed after their deaths. Doe concealed his scheme in part by forging the signatures of Action Center employees on checks he had issued in the employees’ names, and then endorsed the checks and deposited them into his personal bank account. “As alleged, Doe stole money that was supposed to feed the hungry and provide children with after-school services, and used it to finance his lavish lifestyle,” stated United States Attorney Donoghue. “This indictment serves notice that those who steal from charities to line their pockets will pay the price in the end.” Doe is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted of the embezzlement charge, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment. He was also charged for wire fraud or conspiracy to commit bank fraud, which can result in a maximum sentence of 20 years.

The Nitty-Gritty There are some people who have elevated nitpicking to an art form. You probably know one or two. Take, for example, some Star Trek fans. There is actually a guide for them called, "The Nitpicker’s Guide for Classic Trekkers." In an episode that aired on March 2, 1967 called, "This Side of Paradise," Spock and Leila Kalomi, an old friend of his, are searching for spores. She comments, “It’s not much further.” According to the Guide, it should have been, “It’s not much farther.” Further and farther are used interchangeably, but farther

tends to describe physical distance, while further often means to a greater extent. As used above, the word, “nitpick,” means to be excessively concerned with minor details. It comes from an older expression, “to pick out nits,” which refers to the tedious task of removing nits, or tiny lice eggs, from someone’s hair. Humans and lice have had a long history together. Evidence of lice infestation was found on a 10,000-yearold Brazilian mummy. Lice combs date back to antiquity. These specialized combs feature fine teeth designed to

remove lice and nits from human hair. They were made of wood, ivory, bone, or, rarely, precious metals. The expression, “to go over (something) with a fine-tooth comb,” is based on the ancient, and modern use of lice combs. Manually removing nits is illustrated in a painting by the Dutch master Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) known as “A Mother’s Duty.” It shows a mother carefully inspecting and delousing her kneeling child’s hair. Scenes of domestic life were popular subjects of paintings from 17th century Holland. Cleaning of the hair symbolized the pursuit of a clean life both in a physical and spiritual sense. Head lice nits stick to human hair through a special glue secreted by female lice that forms a protective sheath for the newly laid eggs. The sheath is similar to human hair. Pubic lice nits also attach to hair, but in a more embarrassing location, although they can be found on other body hair. Pubic lice are often spread

by sexual contact and their presence on children may indicate sexual abuse. Body lice are often found on clothing and bedding, but occasionally the nits may attach to hair. Body lice, unlike head and pubic lice, may be carriers of infectious diseases such as epidemic typhus, relapsing fever, and trench fever. Head lice can be treated with over-the-counter medications like pyrethrins and permethrin lotion, however drug resistance in lice is a growing concern. Alternatively, a number of prescription medications are available. The ancient parental duty of combing infested hair is still an important part of the treatment regimen. Hopefully, better medications to treat lice will become available further down the road. Or is it farther? Protection. Nourishment. Comfort. I had one full day to myself and decided to do nothing much else but read a book a friend had given me. It is a memoir of all different remedies one individual went through for several years of her life through relationships and family drama and all else that life brings to offer. She searched through all selfhelp connections and traveled extensively to experience various modes of proposed healing approaches, frantically trying to

fill something, frantically trying to figure out what she needed in order to live a happy life. I love the dedication at the beginning of the book: â&#x20AC;&#x153;For all those whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve ever needed a lantern. And for all those whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been one.â&#x20AC;? I think most of us have probably needed and been one at different times in our lives. This author searched and searched for the way through all different sorts of people and experts, meandering mindfully

and sometimes not so mindfully, to identify her place in the world: a place to live, a place to work, a place to be happy â&#x20AC;&#x201D; finally settling to a beautiful open place that evolved to where she provided herself a simple life. She was content to realize and know deeply that she simply needed protection, nourishment and comfort, and wanted to share it with others. So she became the lantern too, showing the way and enlightening others through her experience and settled way of life. It makes me think of how often we complicate our lives, seeking things not really necessary to fulfill our basic needs. I think sometimes we should just start there in the simplicity of a roof, food and comfortable surroundings when things become overwhelming and busy, and we forget about all the other stuff. Then proceed to fill in slowly, always remembering what is basic, what we really need and how we could sustain ourselves. The less we have, the less we have to think about. The less we have to think about, the more time we have to be in time

and space that we want to be, reveling in whatever it is that makes us happy and free. We may have to start from scratch to create what that simplicity is in our lives. Summer is a good a time as any to slow down life and think about what is necessary, what are necessary enhancements and what are downright extras that turn into complications with too much time spent and not enough time reaping the benefits. Taking time to step back in observation will reveal what is what and we can continue to make a few subtle changes to bring us back to simplicity and more inner peace and happiness. Just planting some seeds for thought here, inspired by one day reading a book, on a simple day at the beginning of summer in Rockaway. Tired OfÂ Gossip Dear Enchantress, I'm SO done with my old way of living. I'm constantly getting swept up in gossiping with my neighbors. I feel gross afterwards, and also want to stay welcomed in my community here. If feel like if I don't participate in talking garbage, then no one will talk to me anymore. Everyone gossips about everyone. I was born here in Rockaway, and forever I remember this is the way it is. My grand-

mother gossiped, and my whole family does. It creates so much discomfort for me, and feels so much like high school. I live alone now, and I have taken on this bad habit. My neighbors even gossip about people they call friends! It's terrible. How do I take myself out of this, and stay friendly with my neighborhood peeps? Dear Gossiping Gail, Impressive! It's wonder-

ful that you realize this is a choice, and that you no longer want to be in this choice of being a garbage talker. I see gossip as an immature way of connecting, it's a limited view of relating. It feels good to connect with a person in judgement, yet at the same time, disconnecting. You have beautiful awareness of that if they are talking about others, that eventually they will talk about you. Guess what? They already are. They are already sitting in judgement about what's right and what's wrong, and no one is hardly ever right. SO! The quickest way is to change the subject, like when dealing with little children, you re-direct them. The easiest thing to talk about is the weather, or sharing your own personal thoughts and experiences about yourself. Since they are not aware that you are re-directing them, it will be an exercise solely for you. It's the perfect thing to get healthier! As soon as you see these neighbors, have a

Page 29 healthy activity in mind, like going for a walk, taking a bike ride, going for a swim. Frontload your conversation by telling them you're on your way to do that activity. Don't get caught up in a sit-down conversation. Even if you start to feel obligated to continue talking, force yourself to move on. You got this! Child identity theft occurs when personal information of a minor child is exposed or stolen and used for fraudulent purposes, for example, to obtain a credit card or loan, sign up for utility service, or even acquire medical care. According to a recent study, children are twice as likely to become fraud victims than adults after a data breach. Identity thieves love to steal children’s identities because their credit is generally “pristine;” it has never been used. Furthermore, since a child does not become aware that their identity has been stolen until they’re old enough to apply for credit, the fraud can continue undetected for years. A recent study shows that more than one million children had their identity stolen in 2017; 66% of child victims are younger than eight; and 60% of child

Child Identity Theft: Prevention, Signs, Mitigation victims know the perpetrator. Minors are more likely to be victimized by somebody they know. The best way to protect your child from identity theft is to prevent it. Here are a few tips: SSNs are often used as identifiers when another identifier would be just as useful. If you are asked for a SSN, including by your child’s school, don’t provide it unless it is absolutely necessary (for example, when your child is filing a tax return); Educate your child about safe information practices online and offline, including the importance of using encrypted sites to transmit sensitive information; Keep children’s sensitive physical data like Social Security cards and birth certificates secured and out of sight; Shred personal documents before disposal; If your child has a credit report because they have a line of credit, (for exam-

ple, they’re an authorized user on your account) place a credit freeze on the report. Credit freezes prevent identity thieves from establishing new credit (but this is only one form of identity theft). Be watchful for signs of child identity theft. If you get mail indicating that your child is “an adult” (a jury summons, IRS correspondence, collection calls), this may be an indication he/she has been victimized. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission suggests that when your child turns 16, you should check (contact the three major credit reporting agencies) to see if they have a credit report: if your child is a minor without a credit history and has a credit report, this is a good indication they’re an identity theft victim, as the agencies don’t intentionally compile credit information for children under 13. If your child is a victim, take

measures to minimize the damage: File a police report. You will need it to clear your child’s name. Call involved financial institutions and explain that your child is a victim of identity theft. Ask them to close fraudulent accounts. Contact each credit reporting agency and place a credit freeze in your child’s file to prevent further damage. File an identity theft report with the FTC; the FTC doesn’t investigate individual complaints, but its database is available to law enforcement agencies looking for trends and other victims. Keep a log with dates and notes about your steps to clear your child’s name. Billions of records have been exposed through data breaches and insecure information handling at companies we’ve trusted to keep our info safe, but you can still take steps to be vigilant about your child’s (and your) personal information.

By Beth Hanning Beach Etiquette Part 2 Thank you so much for all of your emails this past week. Everyone seems to be on the same page with people needing beach etiquette. I just want to note these rules are for everyone, not just our visitors. My favorite text was from Beth O’Neill who said, “Love the column!!! I vote you make copies and I’ll help laminate and we will post all over the boardwalk and beach walls.” Here’s Part 2: Rule 4: PDAs. Our beach is

a public beach, not a private beach on a romantic getaway. You may hold hands but do not make out in the water or on your blanket. I have seen women straddling their partner on their blanket, on a weekend! Thanks. Rule 5: As far as beach umbrellas go, we do not want someone to get impaled while trying to enjoy a sunny day at the beach. I understand skin cancer and sunburn are a factor in you wanting to sit un-

derneath the shade, but you need to put in some work. Dig a hole and make sure it is securely in the sand. It does take some effort. If you need help, ask. I am sure each beach has an umbrella guru. We have plenty. Rule 6: Do not change your clothes on the beach. Walk to the nearest restroom and change out of your bathing suit into the attire you wish to wear for your commute home. No one wants to see this. Also, do not take a full shower with soap and shampoo at the showers on the boardwalk. Those showers for cleaning off the sand, not your full body shower. I could not believe people actually did this but it was in the emails I received this week. Rule 7: This rule is not really for the beach but it applies to walking around the streets and in the neighborhood businesses. Shirts and shoes are not optional. Put them on. I do not care if you are thin and can rock the look, many of you cannot. This rule es-

pecially goes into effect after dark. I recently saw a young lady with a great shape in a bikini and a sarong eating a dinner at a local restaurant after dark. She then hung out at the bar and her sarong was blowing and you could literally see her “cheek.” Rule 8: Do not feed the seagulls…We locals call them the beach rats. Would you feed a rat on the subway? I do not think so. Please do not leave food around as it will attract the beach rats. Also, be careful with your food; they will eat it right out of your hand. GRANTS AND CONVERSATIONS The Queens Council On the Arts announced that The Queens Art Fund (QAF) is offering grants to Queens-based individual artists and nonprofit organizations offering distinctive arts and cultural programming that directly serves the community member of Queens. Individual Artists Grants ($3000) are open to all artistic disciplines who live in or have a studio in Queens. Disciplines include music, theater, and dance; film/video and media arts; literature; and visual arts. Organization Grants ($1000$5000) are project-based and support arts and projects that enhance the cultural vibrancy in communities and neighborhoods. Another item of interest is "Creative Conversations," a monthly dinner meeting where you will have the opportunity to network, organize, meet community stakeholders, develop strategies for community advocacy and learn about other QCA opportunities. John L. “Jack” Farrell, Jr., died at the age of 90, in Tulsa, Oklahoma on May 25, 2019. He was born January 24, 1929, in Rockaway Beach, New York City, to the late John L. Farrell and Edna (Ziegler) Farrell. Jack is survived by his wife Beverly Hembree of 24 years. Jack married Joanne Gorman in 1954, was blessed with the birth of their children, John (Diane Whitmer), Maureen (deceased, as is her husband Jacob Kenner), Jayne Hasler (Bill) and Dianne Quagliariello (Phil). In 1973, Jack married Kathy Lynch (deceased) and was blessed with their son Michael (Melanie Tirronen). Throughout Jack’s entire life, his greatest pride and love was his family. Over his years, he shared the joys of five children, three stepchildren, twenty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. After graduation from St Peter’s University, NJ, Class of ‘50, Jack entered the U.S. Army. He took great pride in his military service during the Korean War and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant in ‘53. Upon his return, and with the support of Joanne, Jack graduated from St John’s University School of Law, Class of ’55, and then from New York University School of Business, MBA Class of ’60. His 56-year business career included employment affiliations with American Car & Foundry (ACF Industries), Knox Glass, US Filter Corporation and Filtrol Corporation, all primarily in New York City; and as president of FRACORP and as a Financial Consultant, both in Tulsa. He held an elected position with Ardsley Public Schools, Ardsley, NY, and was a Board member of Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY. He was an 18-year volunteer for Saint Francis Hospice, Tulsa, OK, where he received a Volunteer of the Year Award. Jack, remembered as a true gentleman, loved the outdoors, Final Four trips with sons and grandchildren, and numerous cruises and visits to our National Parks with Beverly. Jack was born of Irish ancestry and was proud of his more than 30 years of genealogy “work” as Family Tree Maker building the 4,300-member Farrell Family Tree. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 8, 11:00 a.m., at the Church of Saint Mary, 1347 East 49th Street, Tulsa. Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard

Growing Beyond the Comfort Zone “Discontentment is worse than witchcraft.” This is a saying that my granny pelts out from time-to-time when I complain or express disdain about something. Well, for the past few months, I’ve increasingly become discontented about a dire situation that is no one’s fault, but precious time is a wastin’, and a future is at stake—none other than my daughter’s. I’m definitely not a witch, just a concerned parent with no crystal ball, but ready to take the leap into the unknown. My daughter, Soanirina, will be 11 this year. I boast to everyone that she is a natural born athlete. She can rollerblade, skateboard, ice skate and even snowboard with no fear. However, she is nonverbal, and can’t read, write, much less spell her name. Everyone who engages with her immediately remarks how incredibly sharp she is, but when it comes to the academic arena, I’m worried. She attends a great school with a caring team of teachers, paras and therapists, but as comfortable as I am with her school just being a hop, skip and jump away, I know she needs more help that is going to take her out of my comfort zone. Note that I said, “my comfort zone.” When I worked in Manhattan, Soa first attended a halfday pre-school in Brooklyn, where I was allowed to have

a nanny ride the bus with her. I was comfortable. When she matriculated into a full-day school in Woodmere, Long Island, and had to ride the bus unaccompanied, the comfort zone got narrower, but at least the school was reasonably close by, where I could hop on the Long Island Railroad in the city and get to her in a jiffy. Once she entered a Department of Education (DOE) public school in New Hyde Park—oh, how the comfort zone became the size of a pea. When one day, it took her three hours to get home from school, I immediately transferred her to a school in Rockaway. Then my life made an about turn. I left my career as a fashion technical designer to focus more on my daughter; return to my first love, writing; and spark a forever flame with Rockaway’s beautiful autism community. The comfort zone got nice and fat, but admittedly as comfortable as I am, it’s time to step out for my Soa. Soa desperately needs more support in a school setting. She is getting older, not to mention stronger, and her behaviors are becoming more unmanageable. I’ve spoken to countless parents, who were faced with similar challenges, and decided to put their children on the spectrum in a private school setting. It’s not an easy decision, because you have to request an im-

partial hearing with the DOE to state your case as to why you believe a specialized private education setting is more appropriate for your child’s needs. There are many costs involved including fees for an attorney, parent advocate, and private evaluations. These private schools cost upward of $90K per year, and you have to fight to get the DOE to pay. (Note under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), your special-needs child has the right to a free and appropriate education that meets their individual needs). I recently heard someone say, "The education law requires that we provide your child with a Chevy, not a Cadillac." I hate to use that analogy to compare public school versus private school, but I don’t want my daughter, or any child for that matter, to lose out on a bright future based on what the system deems an “adequate” academic setting. As parents, we don’t want adequate, we

want the best that is possible. There are no guarantees that a private school is going to do magic and all of a sudden, Soanirina is going to be calculating long division and reading Shakespeare, but as parents, we have to exhaust every avenue to help our children be the best they can be. It’s not an easy road, but worth every step because once you get on top of that mountain, and look up, the possibilities will seem as endless as the universe. Thirty-two years ago, it’s quite possible that Mike Fanning (seen in photo) was the smartest man in Rockaway that day. Fanning must have realized that he was saving a part of history. In the background you can see the last remains of the rollercoaster. This shot was from Shore Front Parkway. In the far distance is the Bay Towers apartment complex. Challah Bread in a Bag By Sharon Feldman

Courtesy of Jewlish.com INGREDIENTS (1 challah) 1 tbsp. yeast 1 cup warm water 3 tbsp. sugar 1/2 tbsp. salt 1/3 cup canola oil 3 cups all-purpose flour + 1/4 cup 1 egg for basting (optional for vegan challah, substitute olive oil) Sesame seeds for topping PREPARATION 1. In a 1-gallon plastic ziplock bag, add the yeast, water, sugar, salt, oil and three cups of flour. 2. Give the bag a little shake. Don’t work too hard—remember, it’s a lazy challah! 3. Place the bag in a bowl of warm water for 30 mins. 4. Remove from bowl, shake, release air from bag, and place on the table for one hour. Flip bag

every 20 mins. The dough should be very wet. It will start to bubble and self-knead. WHOA. 5. After the one hour, add 1/4 cup flour and give the bag another shake. This makes the dough not stick to the bag. 6. Leave the bag for one hour and 30 mins to rise. It should still be a wet dough. If it’s not rising, flip it over and knock it down. If the dough is wet, the recipe will turn out amazing. 7. Preheat oven to 300F/150C. 8. On a well-floured surface, separate the dough and stretch out three strands. Braid. 9. Baste with egg and sprinkle sesame seeds (optional for vegan challah, substitute olive oil). Leave to rise for 15 mins before it goes in the oven. 10. Bake on a non-stick tray for 40 mins or until golden on top.

Theatre is back at St. Francis de Sales! This past weekend, 23 students of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy put on three shows of the production, "Seussical the Musical, Jr." The production was the first show of the newly-formed St. Francis de Sales Performing Arts Club (PAC). PAC is an afterschool program for the middle school students who have an interest in the performing arts. The program affords students the opportunity to enhance their education in reading comprehension, social engagement, speech and communication, while developing their curiosity in acting, singing and dancing. The production was the culmination of four months of rehearsals. The focus of PAC is to engage the students to work together as a team towards a shared goal, as well as target each individual student’s journey of development. This is the first time the school has undertak-

en an active theatre program in a very long time. Art teacher, Ms. Gabrielle Mangano, initiated the performing arts revival at the Academy, which combined her excellent rapport with the students, and her background and experience in choreography, directing, and acting at the Rockaway Theatre Company. “We are always in favor of initiating any program that

will enhance students’ experience, build their confidence and serve as a healthy outlet for them,” said Board Chairman Keith Sullivan. Assistant Principal Rori Martello echoed, “It is amazing to see our students shine in a way that was not available to them within our school building before. Ms. Mangano has inspired dedication, confidence, and a passion for the

visual and performing arts in our students. We are so proud of the work PAC has accomplished and look forward to many more successful productions.” The production, which is a story about the power of friendship, loyalty, family and community, was made possible with the help of the Rockaway Theatre Company’s Richard Louis-Pierre and Jodee Timpone, as well as the dedicated commitment of St. Francis teachers and staff, Ms. Mangano, Mrs. Helen Endall, Mr. Greg Gentile, and of course the students and families of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy. Ms. Mangano summed up PAC’s successes: “These kids have put their heart into this production. They were a part of every step in creating Seussical and truly made it possible. And in the words of Dr. Seuss, ‘It’s possible, anything’s possible!’ I’m very proud of each and every one of them.”

FROM THE FIFTH-GRADE WRITERS OF PS/MS 114 “I can shake off everything as I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn” – Anne Frank I try to empower my students by encouraging them to write about what’s on their minds. And I believe I’ve learned more from them, than they’ve learned from me because I listen. Slowly but surely, they trust me enough to share their secrets—even their most embarrassing or silliest ideas. They test me with their fears and insecurities and tell me what they like or dislike, whether I like it or not. Listening with appreciation, acceptance and understanding has made them fearlessly honest writers and they move on as confident and courageous citizens of tomorrow. Let’s listen to excerpts from their essays. -Joan Diehl Isiah Tawil All my life, I have been trying to find a girlfriend. Believe it or not, it’s harder to find a girlfriend than fighting Godzilla with broken limbs. In sleepaway camp, I had a crush on this girl; I was nine. Her hair was like a fluff of gold, and don’t even get me started about her eyes. And, the thing is I thought she actually liked me! Her name was Carly Dry, which made me realize that her full name would be “Carly Dry-Tawil,” if we ever got married. Another time at Minerals Hotel, I thought I met my future girlfriend. The first time I saw her, I actually froze and started to drool. I was imagining us dancing with fancy clothes and a good DJ and her saying, “I want you to be my boyfriend.” I would have killed for her to say that. In real life, when I walked up to her and asked, “Will you go out with me?” She ran to her dad, who was probably the strongest man alive and screamed, “STRANGER DANGER!” That made me want to sink like the Titanic….

James Green I tried to be invisible in kindergarten. When I sat down, I hid my cheeks in my shirt. I didn’t want to be seen by anybody. I peeked out with one eye. My words were trapped on my tongue, too afraid to jump off. I couldn’t speak. My mouth was glued shut… so many new people around. Probably, the only words I said were “Hi” and “Ok.” My mouth was behind bars. I was as shy as a turtle in its shell. All my life I’ve been looking for something to crack that shell. I found that tool in the third grade. My teacher Ms. Mac was the tool and with a wave of her wand, the glue loosened a bit and my hand rocketed up…. Patrick Lind Popularity. It might just be harder than fighting a lion, blind! The relentless urge to be a celebrity just pops up like a jack-in-the-box. In third grade, I managed a chuckle from my friends with my secret weapon—art. The thought crossed my mind of a man-gorilla. His name was “Man Kong.” He was so strong, his veins looked like lightning bolts trying to rip through his boulder-like muscles. He was so hairy, his moplike strands of hair hung like fur coats from his superman body. This great beast stood like a monumental sculpture in third-grade history. He was such an extraordinary piece of art that some of my friends still remember Man Kong to this day! The remembering of Man Kong continues as well as my dreams of becoming him. Man Kong brought me a step closer on the road to popularity. In fourth grade, I didn’t see the problem with hula-hooping without a hula-hoop. Apparently, it was a threat to my teachers. "Would you like to tell me or show me what you just did?" the teacher scolded. "Show you," I muttered with a grin. I skipped over to the

front of the room and waited for everyone to start looking. I took air-hula-hooping to a whole new level. It looked like I had a seizure in the middle of my demonstration! My limbs seemed to turn to jelly and I slithered like snake. I stood admiring the riot I had caused. I had taken three-foot strides across popularity street…. Lucas Jahrnes Have you ever wondered why girls hang out with girls and boys hang out with boys, but boys and girls never hang out? It’s kinda like there’s an invisible wall of nervousness that makes you turn back and forget about even trying to talk to a girl. But why can’t boys and girls be friends? I mean, you would have double the friends. Then maybe, as you grow up, you might begin to chip away at this wall and actually begin to talk seriously with girls. However, after many failed attempts, I’ll just start talking to girl dogs and girl cats for the rest of my life. I made my first attempt in the first grade. I walked into the classroom and there she was. A single piece of runaway hair that refused to stay in her ponytail was twisted around her pinky finger. The teacher wasn’t there yet, and so I took the leap of faith. Unfortunately, the only words I was able to spit out were: “Hi, I just wanted to know if….ye-uh-soum…, bye, see you later.” She looked like one of those people who had one puzzle piece left but it didn’t fit anywhere. I felt sooo dumb! I heard mumbling from behind me. I spun around like a ballerina. I saw girls crowding around the one I, unsuccessfully, asked out. It sounded almost like they were saying, “What the heck, he’s sooo weird!” I felt like a dog trapped in a cage for hours. I manned up but as I was walking back to my seat, she eyed me down with a look of dis-

gust. The next thing I hear is “What’s his problem?!” I ignored her and decided right then that it would probably be 10 years before I got up the courage to go through that torture again…. Mary Ellenia McManus Best friends are like jewels and I love jewelry, especially rings. However, I just can’t seem to get one to fit my finger. I can never seem to find the perfect fit. It seems my “Ring of Friendship” is valuable only to me… In those bliss years before kindergarten, I thought I’d never need another friend. My one and only “best” friend was perfect in every way. Her name was Catherine and she had long beautiful hair that looked like gold in summer. Her eyes sparkled like stars and she was tiny. They say, “Good things come in small packages,” but, like all good things, “Kit Kat” faded away... Next came Erin. We passed notes and enjoyed millions of playdates when we were seven. Her shoulder-length brown hair bobbed when she walked. Her eyes were brown and had the same seriousness mine had, eyes that only twinkled when they were overjoyed. We were awesome friends for a while, but then our lives led us different ways, different, growing personalities, different tastes, and different friends. So, we went from best friends to good friends. So many times I’d thought I’d struck gold, but every time it turned out to be Fool’s Gold. of the year; the wind whistled through the windows like an old tea kettle. I sat in the corner of my room taking comfort in familiar things—I hated being alone. I called my dog for comfort. He scurried up the stairs like a mouse chasing a piece of cheese. He greeted me with kisses. I knew I had to come up with a way to deal with the situation. My shaky hand picked up the phone and I dialed my grandmother’s number. As always, the sound of her voice put me at ease. Before long I heard my parent’s car pull into the driveway. I’ve always been afraid to be home alone, but I survived that night, and began to conquer my fear…. Calvin Zwerling Dunking like Michael Jordan is like flying into space with a skateboard. Maybe it’s his Air Jordans that make him fly or

it’s in his DNA, but nobody can play like him and I’ve been trying for years…This year I accomplished something that I’ve never done before. I shot three “threes” in a game and made all of them. We had to win to go to the championship, so we played our hearts out. The other team was on our tail; whenever we scored, they scored. I got the ball at the wing and fired it like a cannonball into the enemy base… Finally, we won, and we were happy as kids on Christmas morning. People were saying, “Hey Calvin Jordan!” and I blushed red as an apple. I felt like the king of the beehive.

taking the stage, plus soulful songstress Tiffany Lyons and BEasy’s Band’s Mike Benedetto. Irish actor and author Malachy McCourt proved that singing is among his many talents, as did Roger Clark of NY1 who busted out The Ramones’ “Rockaway Beach.” Steve Conte of the New York Dolls gave a snippet of his “Gimme, Gimme Rockaway” before singing a Thin Lizzy classic, and much, much more, with the music going late into the evening. Sunday’s forecast kept big crowds away, but with the day turning out beautiful, a smaller crowd got to enjoy some great music by Marian Waldron, who came all the way from Ireland

for the show, The Highland Rovers, The Canny Brothers, and HellCat Maggie. At the end of the show, AOH Division 21 announced the winner of the raffle for the trip to two to Ireland, which went to local, Kevin Donohue. With the festival being an overall success, AOH Division 21 will be able to make several donations to local churches, organizations and charities with the money raised from admission, t-shirt sales, the raffle and more. Congratulations to all of AOH Division 21 for putting in the hard work to make the festival a continued success. Sunday, May 26, was a special day for 11 Karate-ka (students) of The World Champions Karate Center Tournament Team. They competed in a Dojo tournament, vying for many prestigious trophies. The athletes competed successfully in Kata (forms), and Kumite (sparring), and each garnered a trophy for both events. The efforts shown by these students involved months, and in most

cases, years of training. There were three divisions determined by age and rank. Double firsts went to Fiorella and Nico, while Chandler and Andrew garnered the remaining two firsts. Parents and spectators were very impressed by the studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; endeavors. Check out the great Karate program at the World Champions Karate Center located at 112-20 Beach Channel Drive.
