Pat Morgan (1958-2019)
Patrick (Pat) Christopher Morgan of Belle Harbor passed away at the age of 61 on July 5, 2019 after a nine-year battle with leukemia. Born on March 14, 1958 in Brooklyn, NY, Pat attended St. Thomas Aquinas grammar school in Flatlands,
Nazareth High School and Brooklyn College. He and his family moved to Belle Harbor in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, John (Jack) Morgan and Kathleen (nee Roughan). He is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Mary (nee Lacey), his daughter, Theresa Turchiano (James), his son, Jerry (Mary Kate), five adoring granddaughters (Julia, Kelsey, Elena, Anna, and Clara) and four siblings (John, Maureen, Brian, and Sheila). Pat was an account executive for most of his 36-year career at AT&T, retiring in 2014. Committed to help those who are less fortunate, he spent fifteen years on the Board of Directors of the Dorothy
Bennett Mercy Center, a nonprofit located in Brooklyn. His passion for music was wellknown. Pat was a multi-instrumentalist in local bands spanning forty years, most notably with the Moran Brothers and Solshyne. In 2016, Pat joined The Rockaway Times as a part-time reporter and columnist. He wrote memorable pieces including one about firefighter Pat Nash donating a kidney to Father Jim Cunningham of St. Francis de Sales. Pat brought talent, insight and wit to the paper. He’s very much missed. Visitation was held on Sunday, July 7 and Monday, July 8 at McManus Funeral Home in Brooklyn, NY.
The funeral Mass was held at St. Francis de Sales Church on Tuesday, July 9. Burial was also on Tuesday at St. Charles Cemetery, 2015 Wellwood Avenue,
Farmingdale, NY 11735. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Patrick’s name to the Dorothy Bennett Mercy Center: DBMCenter.org

Truth Bombs
I was gonna write about waking up on the wrong side of the Roman candle because I don’t believe in fireworks after midnight. But I’m not gonna write about that, I’m just sayin’. I’m all for the bombs bursting in air and the rockets’ red glare on the 4th of July but I’m not looking for proof through the night that the flag is still there when the calendar says it’s the 5th of July. Hey, I know, I’m a dud and I should just turn up the white
noise machine. But c’mon, turn it down for the puppies. Poor dogs get scared and quake and quiver and many canines have told me that explosions after midnight are B.S. And they’ve told me using a Scooby-Doo voice. “This is Bullrit.” So c’mon, all you Gruccis, wrap it up by midnight. Not for me. For the puppies. Since I was up by the dawn’s early light, I figured I’d write about kids and how they lie. Because what else do you think

about in the early morning? You’ll be comforted to know, according to the National Geographic no less, that kids are supposed to lie and it’s a healthy sign of development. I guess if you have a kid who never lies, you’ve got a problem child. “Hey Johnny, don’t you love Grandma’s cooking?” “It’s disgusting!” Grandma is crushed. “But Grandma, he’s so honest.” The people who study kids and lying say getting better at it is a good measure of mental growth. To lie effectively, you’ve got to know the truth, suppress that truth, and invent some other reality all in a snap. All that inventing shows signs of a healthy, developing brain. Of course, sometimes laziness overrides a good lie. You ask the kid where he’s going and he says, “Out.” You’d like a little more specificity, so you ask, “Where’s out?” And the kid responds, “Out.” Sometimes they elaborate and say, “Out, out.” You can see the thought bubble form above their heads. C’mon, do I really have to come
up with a load of crap right now? Can’t you just leave me alone? What’s wrong with ‘out’ as an answer? You want me to lie? Not surprisingly, lying peaks in the teen years when those incorrigible Pitas (as in Pains in the Ass) exert more independence and do stuff they, well, have to lie about. Old people, the non-pitas, lie less. If Grandma’s food is disgusting, they’ll say so. That just makes them obnoxious but not liars. Interestingly enough, men and women lie with the same frequency. A study showed that women are more likely to lie to make another person feel good. Men, those rats, lied most often to make themselves look better. Come to think of it, I tell people I have a great singing voice all the time. Anyway, if you’re wondering how we got from fireworks to here, it’s because fireworks and the 4th of July remind me of George Washington who famously said, “I cannot tell a lie.” Which is quite a whopper. Or as Scooby would say: Bullrit.

Local Magic Man Cardone To Unfurl Beach Bunny Burlesque at Rustwoods By Kami-Leigh Agard
Luscious go-go dancers, a sultry hula hoop artist, internationally-known burlesque dancers and even a sword swallower—it’s all coming to Rustwoods on Saturday, July 20. Rockaway Beach resident and big-name magician, Adam Cardone is bringing an epic Beach Bunny Burlesque circus variety show to town and the magic virtuoso will not just be emceeing the frolics, but will also unleash his own worldclass magic. Cardone produced the first burlesque show in Rockaway Beach five years ago at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (RBSC), and it was such a big hit, he produced several more. Cardone, always the innovator, even teamed up with RBSC co-owner Bradach Walsh to produce the first annual Rockaway Beach Sideshow and Strongman Festival on the boardwalk in the summer of 2016.
This time, Rustwoods will provide the perfect stage for this round of revelry. “I wanted to do a show on a bigger scale, and the Rustwoods/Whit’s End event space is large, not to mention beautiful,” Cardone said. “I don’t do too many of these shows because my standards require high quality, and this location is the perfect space for me to showcase something different that is upscale. I promise that this show is going to be a burlesque/circus/magic spectacle like no other, and the best part? It’s in Rockaway Beach, the community where I live. So it has to be good.” And Cardone is not exaggerating. When doors open at 8 p.m., attendees will be wooed
by an alluring line-up of seasoned, sparkling go-go dancers, each a singular, sensual delight. Then the circus begins at 9 p.m. with a bevy of acts that Cardone says will make jaws drop. World-class hula hoop artist, Miss 360, well-known for her circus-like performances will combine dance, acrobatic elements, and even fire with her fierce hula hoop prowess. International burlesque performer, Penny Wren, aka the "Perverted Pixie of Burlesque," is a wide-eyed danger, known for her performances with the renowned Wasabassco Burlesque and has danced professionally for musical artists such as Bon Jovi, Vampire Weekend and Harold Haven. Get ready for her whirlwind antics, chock-full of seductive charm and kookiness. Then drum roll please… sword swallower, Playboy model, burlesque and fire dancer, Gnarly Marley, will bring in a hurricane of circus acts that will leave eyes wide open with wonderment. She has been featured
on Ripley's Believe It Or Not!, NYC's Museum of Sex, Playboy TV's “Badass," Playboy's “Sexy 100,” and much more! Marley and Cardone even just recently teamed up for NYC’s Rainbow Room’s Pride event, Love Above All Ball, that benefitted Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. While the show is expected to be tasteful, keep the kids at home. What would a Beach Bunny Burlesque show be without Cardone stupefying the audience with his magic? Cardone wouldn’t give details about his performance, but said, “One of the tricks I am going to do is something I have never done in Rockaway. It’s a bit larger with more props. He was chockfull of ideas and always appeared upbeat, despite ongoing health challenges, and he was always ready with a quip. Brooklyn-born and raised, he came to Rockaway 17 years ago and got right into the life here, becoming a band member of Solshyne, the popular musical group. ***** Someone found a couple of passports dropped on the street near the ferry and dropped them off with us hoping we might be able to use social media to get the passports back to the owners. The passports were of twin sisters, just 10 years old. We posted it online but had no luck so we did what you’re supposed to do if you find a lost passport. We mailed it to the U.S. State Department in Sterling, Virginia. ***** Last week we wrote, “Tiffany Cabán has a bigger lead over Melinda Katz in the Queens DA race after machine votes were recounted, according to the Daily News. Although absentee ballots have not yet been counted, the odds heavily favor Cabán.” We went to press and minutes later there was a report that Katz was suddenly ahead by 20 votes. Te Quiero. Plus AB Studios will be hosting an all-day lineup of hardcore, punk and metal bands from noon until 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Riis Park Beach Bazaar will serve as a big venue for the festival with music starting at 5 p.m. on Friday, and from noon until dark on both Saturday and Sunday. The concessions are rocking all summer, but this weekend, there will be music every night. At Low Tide, you can catch some tunes by new musicians every hour starting at 6 p.m. through 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday. At Caracas, there will be DJ sets starting at 5 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and on Saturday, Big Squid takes the stage from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Rippers will have live music starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, plus DJs on Sunday. Couple Drowns on Beach 9th A Long Island couple drowned in Far Rockaway on Tuesday night, July 9. According to the New York Post, the bodies of Umarie Chamble, 25, and Keylon Ramsay, 28, were recovered from the water on Beach 9th Street after a 911 call was received at about 10:20 p.m. The couple, who lived in Inwood, were attending a friend’s birthday party on the beach. According to the Post, the couple had allegedly been drinking when they decided to go into the water. Chamble was reportedly trying to teach Ramsay how to swim, when they went missing and a friend called 911. First-responders attempted CPR on the shore before Chamble and Ramsay were transported to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. “They loved each other. He’s
my first son, the best son I could ask for. It hurts. There’s not much I can say. He was a fantastic kid,” Ramsay’s father, Sheldon St. Hilaire, told CBS. “She was trying to teach Keylon how to swim,” Chamble’s cousin, Sharifa Martin, told the New York Post. “She was a really fun, loving, nice girl.” It should be noted that lifeguards are off duty after 6 p.m. As part of Reynolds Channel, Beach 9th Street is a particularly dangerous area with strong currents and a deep drop-off.

Locals Ready to Throw Down at Thrilla in Camilla By Katie McFadden
It’s that time again. When those who fight fires take on those who, well, fight. On Friday night, July 12, the FDNY takes on the Irish in the boxing ring at St. Camillus for the annual Thrilla in Camilla. And with this year’s local grudge match set between Robbie Salmon and Rich Pontieri, Friday’s event is sure to draw in a big crowd for a good cause. Each year, FDNY Bravest Boxing takes on opponents at the annual Thrilla in Camilla to raise money for a great cause— Building Homes for Heroes. This national nonprofit has made it their mission to gift mortgage-free homes to those who were injured or who live with PTSD as a result of serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. This year, the hero being recognized at the boxing event is United States Marine Corporal Jeremy Kelley. Kelley will be at the event to help present a check of $40,000 to the organization that has helped build him a home in Florida.
For FDNY Bravest Boxing and their president Bobby McGuire, this cause is something that’s near and dear to their hearts. “First, this is a great night of boxing. But more importantly, it’s for a good cause—to take care of our veterans that take care of us. These guys are coming back from fighting the War on Terror with severe injuries and they

should be taken care of. This is so important, especially after 9/11. There are about 1,400 FDNY members that are active in the reserves or are veterans, so we want to make sure they’re taken care of,” McGuire said. In the spirit of taking care of those that need it, in addition to Building Homes for Heroes, at the event another check will be
presented to FDNY firefighter Matt McDevitt, who is suffering from sinus cancer, to help him and his family offset some of the medical and travel costs for treatments. To raise money for such donations, several opponents duke it out in the ring. This year, FDNY Bravest Boxing is taking on Garda Siochana, Ireland’s National Police Service. But this won’t be the first time the team has met its match. In March, FDNY Bravest Boxing took on the home team in Belfast, Ireland, and defeated them in all but one of eight matches. “We went to Belfast on March 30 and won their Battle of the Badges, which shocked the Irish team,” McGuire said. Now FDNY has invited Ireland to the shores of Rockaway for a rematch, and McGuire says he feels good about the FDNY holding their title. “I feel really good about our team. While the fights between FDNY and Ireland will surely be ones to talk about, many will be waiting for the final event of 12—the local super heavyweight grudge match. In the red corner, hailing from Howard Beach, is Robbie “Smokey” Salmon. And in the blue corner, from Rockaway Beach, is Richard Pontieri. And the two are ready to duke it out for a good cause. This all started about three weeks ago, when Pontieri called out Salmon during a night out enjoying Wine With Sue at the Bungalow Bar. While others turned down Pontieri’s challenge, Salmon stepped up and agreed. Neither have boxing experience, but both have a bone to pick. “We have a lovehate relationship,” Salmon said. “We’re the best of friends, who always get on each other’s nerves.” Pontieri explained more about their grudge. “We battle it out on Facebook often.
I love breaking his chops about anything he puts up, whether it’s a stupid post or picture,” he said. Now they’re taking their tendency to bust each other’s chops into a public arena, battling it out in three one-minute rounds during the last fight of the night on Friday. While both agree they’ll stay friends before and after what happens in the ring, tensions are already building. “It’s gonna be a match between the Local 1-2 Utility Workers of America vs. Mr. Mom,” Salmon, an employee for Con Edison said, taking a jibe at Pontieri’s role as a stay-at-home dad. “Every time I leave a one-liner on his Facebook posts, he comes back at me because I’m a stay-athome dad. I was in construction for 16 years, but he keeps running his mouth,” Pontieri said. However, Pontieri says he doesn’t think Salmon is quite ready to let his fists do the talking. “I’ve been putting on the gloves and headgear and shadowboxing to get a feel for it. I see he’s doing his usual 12-ounce curls. That’s what I hear from the

grapevine. He’s going restaurant to restaurant, bar to bar, but I don’t think there’s a treadmill in any of those places,” Pontieri said. Salmon says that he too, is taking the match seriously. When asked about his training… “I’m doing my curls,” he said, picking up an Angry Orchard Cider at Healy’s. “Plus, lots of bike work, leg work, and a little jump rope. I’m hoping my arms still work,” Salmon said, adding that he thinks Pontieri’s long “orangutan arms could prove to be a challenge. “I don’t know who’s gonna win, but I do know I’m not gonna be that far away from him. I’m gonna stay close to the inside,” Salmon said. Pontieri says his biggest concern is his own adrenaline wearing out by the time of the late event, but says he’s feeling good about the outcome. “I’m taking this seriously because I have a ton of people coming and I’m not being embarrassed by Robbie Salmon,” Pontieri said. Back in the day, kids from Howard Beach used to come to 108th and fight with the Rockaway kids. I’m sure Robbie wasn’t there. He was probably hiding,” Pontieri said. But on Friday, both will be in the spotlight, fighting for Heroes. “I’m humbled to be able to step up and help sell those extra tickets with Robbie for this amazing organization. All jokes aside, Robbie stepped up with no hesitation and this grudge match is going to bring out a lot of people,” Pontieri said. “It’s for a good cause. That’s what it’s all about,” Salmon said. On Friday, gates open at St. Camillus (Beach 100th and Shore Front Parkway) at 6 p.m. with the first bout at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at www. FDNYBoxing.com. and highly intelligent creatures. I wonder where they look... Active? Swim in the ocean or join the surfers and paddle boarders on the waves for their daily morning rides. Fear of sharks? No problem. Rockaway has five miles of boardwalk! You can jog, run, walk or bike along the stretch. And if you’re feeling wild and crazy, go over the bridge into Long Beach for lunch. Need teamwork? Join the beach volleyball league and spend your Wednesday nights bumping, setting, spiking and striving to be the last team to leave the beach when play is over. Plenty of dolphins do that, you will find them there. Like music? Hit Caracas, Low Tide or Rippers on the boardwalk or go the myriad of bars and restaurants which feature local bands playing music ranging from Grateful Dead to Hip Hop. Thai Rock is my personal favorite for music, food and pretty cocktails. Dolphins like to dance so you will see them in abundance. Did you say food? There are TONS of eateries to suit every taste: Oasis Ramen House, Uma’s, Pico, Whit’s End, RBQ, Bungalow Bar, and so many others. Did I mention Thai Rock is my favorite? If you know dolphins, you know they enjoy a good meal. Want to relax? Grab the yoga mat and join the bendy people along the shore. Not stretchy? No problem, they don’t judge. You can also slather yourself with sunscreen and bask on the sand. The “nutcracker” man has become a welcome addition to the Rockaway Beach experience. Anyway, there are so many things to embrace about Rockaway and so many other people who can give greater insight on living your best life here. I just wanted to talk about dolphins. If you can’t see them on the shore line, look elsewhere. Our community is full of them. Kay Sullivan
not discuss the fact that the contractors on Beach Channel Drive are using the park at Beach 124th Street as a staging ground. They are leaving debris and left-over pipes, cement, sand, wood, metal plates, all around the park, which gets blown around and winds up in the sewers. This has been the staging ground for this project the past entire year, since the project got started. It took many phone calls to Eric Ulrich's office, and the assistance of Robert Schwach and Matt Pecorino from Eric Ulrich's office to get the forklifts and dumpsters to discontinue the night work at the staging area. (Keep your fingers crossed). From midnight until 4 a.m., the trucks would be backing up, dropping their loads, beep-beep-beeping all night long. Surely there must be a better staging area away from residences. Perhaps along BCD between Beach 127th and 132nd, a wide-open swath by the bay with much less disturbance to residents. P.S. By now most of you who actually take the time to look for this column at the back of The Rockaway Times each week are aware that I have not penned anything of note over the past several weeks. The whispers surrounding the reason for my absence were numerous and often outlandish—drugs, arrested, abducted by aliens, bitten by a duck, etc. To all of you rumor-mongers out there, you're all wrong. I was simply busy immersing myself in the today’s new "Green" movement and allowing my environmental awareness to blossom. Case in point.... The “Green Movement” is in full swing on West 12th Road, as evidenced by the fact that many people riding down West 12th Road these days are pulling up short midway down the street when they come upon the sight of a new construction log house to replace the original residence lost during Super Storm Sandy in 2012. I know what you’re thinking… “How are log homes ‘green’? They use logs from trees, and isn’t killing trees wrong?” Today’s environmentally-conscious builders opt for materials from sustainable forests, which means the trees are grown specifically for the purpose of being cut down. By having a supply of trees from a renewable, sustainable source, the rest of the world’s forests can be saved. So, all you tree-huggers out there can keep your powder dry. told, log homes are great at maintaining temperature and conserving energy. This is due to the size of the logs and their ability to absorb heat during the day and radiate it at night. This helps keep the home comfortable without having to rely as much on your HVAC. According to several studies, homes constructed with solid log walls are generally 2.5% to 15% more energy efficient than standard stick-frame construction. Additionally, how can you go wrong? Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin and he turned out OK. There is also another rumor out there that Chuck Norris was also born in a log cabin that he built with his bare hands in Oklahoma back in 1940. (Yeah, I know some of you out there will have to think about that last one.) I have also decided to embrace my inner "Green" and recently availed myself of a program sponsored by ConEd and had over 40 incandescent light bulbs swapped out for more energy-efficient LED lights, which they claimed would help me in reducing my consumption of energy, and thus, lower my ConEd bill. Initially I was hesitant to go with this program after it was explained to me that the new LEDs would generate just as much light but hardly any heat as compared to my old incandescent fixtures and thus consume much less electricity. "Sure," I said, "but what about the heat that I will be losing during the winter with new LEDs...won't my home-heating fuel bill go through the roof?" They assured me that the new LEDs would not prompt an increase in my home-heating expenses during the winter so I went with the program, but I will be keeping a close eye on my oil bills nonetheless. My inner "Green" has also seen my involvement with home solar panels. Until just
recently, I have always understood solar panel power to mean that the sun shines down on the earth and the solar panel catches the light and then transmits it deep underground to help miners find coal, which is then used to fire a furnace, which heats water to produce steam, which is then used to spin a turbine which generates electricity, which ConEd sends down the line to my home and charges me like a loan shark for it. The solar panel outfit patiently explained that I could bypass the miners, furnace, turbine and, most importantly, ConEd, and use the sunlight myself to generate electricity. At first I felt bad about stealing the sunlight from all those miners but then I figured, the hell with them, they can always
use flash lights with little LEDs in them to keep finding their coal. Not one to do anything half way, I am also in the process of replacing my two monster 28000 BTU air conditioners (which when both of them are operating, spin my electric meter like a frisbee) for a supposedly energy-efficient ductless HVAC (mini-split) system. Truth be told, my environmental consciousness had nothing to do with my decision in this matter. I was sold on this system as soon as I realized that it's efficiency would serve to further lessen any dependency on ConEd and its excessive energy charges. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

History Lessons The history of medical research is filled with studies of dubious ethical merit. In fact, some past studies were based on protocols that would be considered abhorrent today. Studies based on animal experiments are still performed today, as are studies on disease cures that use control subjects. By that I mean that volunteers with the same disease are separated into two groups—one group is given the experimental cure and the other group is given a placebo. This type of study is usually double-blinded, meaning that neither the subject nor the researcher knows whether the subject is given the cure or the placebo. Recently, the American Urological Association’s Didusch Center for Urologic History in Baltimore publicly exhibited detailed charcoal and pencil sketches used in two textbooks of prostate surgery written by Perry B. Hudson, M.D., who was chief of urology at Columbia University’s Francis Delafield cancer Hospital in the 1950s. The drawings, done by Tod Dee Craig, who was a staff artist at Delafield Hospital, were notable for their technical detail and their role in the history of urologic surgery. Men were recruited by Dr. Hudson to undergo open biopsies and prostatectomies to verify his belief that prostate cancer could be detected and treated at an early age. The men were homeless alcoholics living on the streets and flophouses of the Bowery. Many were veterans unable to readjust to society after the war. Dr. Hudson and his colleagues recruited hundreds of these men through offers of hospitalization, which the men freely accepted because it enabled them to trade their dingy environment for a hos-
THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2019 pital’s clean sheets, three hot meals a day, and maybe even a little respect. Historical evidence, however, reveals that many, if not most, of the men were unaware of the risks of what they were agreeing to, an assertation later vehemently denied by Dr. Hudson. These mostly asymptomatic men underwent open prostate biopsy, and if cancer was found on frozen section, they simultaneously underwent radical prostatectomy, surgical castration, and postoperative administration of estrogen. Dr. Hudson reported prostate cancer in about 10 percent of the men with a six-year mortality rate of 30 percent. Since there was no control group, the study did not produce any meaningful conclusions about the survival benefits of treatment and surgical complications such as perforation and erectile dysfunction occurred at a significant rate. The results of the study were published in well-known medical journals and Life magazine. The study concluded in 1966 after Dr. Hudson left Delafield Hospital under a cloud of legal and ethical concerns arising from his work. Dr. Hudson, who was accustomed to criticism of his work, defended himself by stating that it would have met the tenets of the Nuremberg Code, which had been formulated just four years before his Bowery study commenced. Ms. Craig, the artist, was a socialite until life’s darker forces overcame her. She committed suicide in her mid-40s. Dr. Hudson bounced from location to location, at one time being the dean of a Caribbean medical school. He died in 2017, just shy of his 100th birthday, in Florida. One hundred and eighty-four drawings were rescued from his home and the rapidly approaching Hurricane Irene and were sent to the Didusch museum. LISTEN Often we are asked to listen and we feel compelled to give advice or talk about our own problems. My best friend, daughter, confidant sent me the following poem one day when she was in a psychology class for nursing. The instructor made copies for each student to have and of course she knew I would love it or, perhaps she was trying to tell me something. I am sharing because it had a profound impact on how I listen. Listen,
“When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice, you have not done what I have asked. When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn’t feel this way, you are trampling on my feelings. When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me. Strange as that may seem. Listen: All that I ask you to do is listen. Not talk or do — just hear me.
When you do something for me that I can and need to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy. But when you accept as a simple fact, that I feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to convince you and get about this business of understanding what’s behind them. So please listen and just hear me, and, if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn and I’ll listen to you.” ~ Anonymous It can be difficult to be quiet and simply listen. We often feel the need to speak even if we have nothing to say. Some people are uncomfortable in silence and yet this can be a moment of awakening to just be with one another and hold space for whatever is going on in that person’s life. As a mother, I am constantly giving advice and instructions. Make your bed, do your laundry, clean your room, be nice to everyone you meet, be careful, moderation please, etc. My role as a parent is to
Page 29 provide a strong foundation for my children to become responsible adults. Spoiling them with lots of love but teaching them to walk the walk. Always do the right thing even when no one is looking and try to not be a follower, be a leader. Be kind and generous and listen to one another. My family is a quiet group. We make time to listen to one another and if there is nothing to speak about, we have learned to simply be present. I am still asking for phones to be put away and they are beginning to understand the value of silence. No media, no social network, no noise. We enjoy our time alone with no distractions. Taking vacations together is precious. We are now all adults and I am learning to listen to them. College is over for all three of my children and we are moving on to the next chapter of our lives. We don’t truly know what the future will bring, so we are living well in this moment. The quieter you become, the more you will hear.

Help Locals Start a New Chapter With A Permanent Bookstore By Kami-Leigh Agard
After two years of hosting pop-up Avoid The Day bookbars at various venues throughout the community, local husband and wife book-andwine-loving duo, Jianna and Jason Heuer, are ready to turn the page, and open up Rockaway’s first-ever brick-and-mortar bookstore bar and cafe. They recently launched an Indiegogo fundraising campaign, and are reaching out to the community for help to make their dream come true of offering not just a bookstore, but a communal experience they fervently believe will benefit Rockaway at large. According to Jason Heuer, hosting their recent June popup at a Beach 90th Street storefront was the game-changer that gave them the boost to start a new chapter with Avoid The Day. “We wanted to do a test to
see if people would actually respond to a storefront bookstore that sells not just books, but also gift items, apparel and other merchandise. The owner of the building on Beach 90th

generously offered his space to us, where we also hosted local art shows, musicians, poets, and a large portion of our display table was dedicated to local authors and photographers.
We even got the liquor license to sell beer and wine. “So this pop-up was the full realization of what we envisioned Avoid The Day’s brickand-mortar bookbar was going to be like, and the response was overwhelming. People loved it! We were astounded by the number of books we sold,” Heuer ecstatically shared. When the Heuers' bookbar was recently featured in NY Magazine’s To Do List, the couple got a further boost. “After being featured in NY Magazine, we decided to extend our June pop-up to six weeks, and the reception just grew. From a financial perspective, it seemed like we could actually survive as a business. So based on this last test, we saw that we could move forward and open our very own storefront,” Heuer said. People like walking into a local bookstore, where they know the owners and can pick up an actual physical book. For the last three years, physical books have been increasing in sales. Prior to that, they had hit a slump when people were purchasing digital books, but now people are going back to buying actual physical books again. There’s something about that tactile, authentic book experience that is making a comeback. Small independent community bookstores are healthy and surviving, and more of them are coming up because again, people want the experience of walking in, lounging on a couch with a glass of wine or coffee, curling up with a good book in a space, where they
know the owners and meet other customers walking in. Also, the personal touch of being able to ask the owner to order a particular book they’ve been looking for. This is the intimate experience you can only get in an independent, local community bookstore. Everybody knows they can order it from Amazon and get it in two days, but now people want more of a personal experience, instead of just anonymously clicking a button and finding a box on their doorstep.” And as for the bookbar concept, Heuer feels there is a special niche. “There’s a niche for bookstore bars because you’re offering both a literary and casual bar experience. going to be used, so people will also like the idea of a price point that is not just affordable, but sustainable. We’ll also be offering new books, but most of our book inventory will be used and significantly markdown for a bigger value,” he said. The Heuers set their Indiegogo fundraising goal to $60K, and as of press time, they’ve raised $3,475 and only have 24 days left to reach their goal. However, Heuer said he and his wife are optimistic. “Our daytime jobs (Heuer is a book cover designer, teacher, and artist, and his wife is a clinical social worker) are what’s funding our bookstore right now, but we’re hoping with the fundraiser we will have the funds needed to rent a storefront. The owner who was generous enough to let us use the space for our June pop-up, wants to rent or sell the building, but that’s not in our financial means, at least not now. So we’re proactively looking for a space that we could rent as a storefront,” he said. The Heuers say that with their brick-and-mortar bookstore
bar and cafe, they want to give back to the community. “For every pop-up, we have chosen a local nonprofit to donate part of our proceeds. In the long run, we want to hire local people to help run the bookstore and eventually start a training program to teach local students how to run a small business from top to bottom,” Heuer said. The husband and wife duo hope to open their brick-andmortar store by the end of the year. “It will be great if we could open by the holidays, and if not, we’ll just do a pop-up, not losing sight of our ultimate goal. We just want the right space. It’s like buying a house. It takes time to find the one that fits your needs and says, ‘Home,’ and we want Avoid The Day bookstore bar and cafe to feel like home for the community,” Heuer said. By Gille Ann Rabbin, Esq., CIPP/US YOUR DIGITAL ASSISTANT, YOUR PRIVACY About a month ago my family sat down to dinner and midway through the meal my son mentioned my husband’s “man cave.” My husband corrected him, stating that in actuality the room spoken of was his office. Inconsequential table banter no doubt, but later that evening my husband received an email advertising décor options for the perfect man cave. Coincidence? Or was my husband’s iPhone spying on us? Digital assistants, like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Home, and Microsoft’s Cortana are present in millions of consumers’ homes, and voice searching has become more prevalent. Virtual voice assistants use artificial intelligence to analyze speech and respond to our voices. Search requests and location data can be connected to our user accounts and when compiled can produce profiles of our personal lives, with interests, preferences, and routines. This enables the devices to deliver accurate results. But questions have arisen regarding what these devices do with our data and how they handle privacy. Consumers have become increasingly fearful, with a recent study showing that 41% of virtual assistant users are concerned about privacy, trust, and eavesdropping. In April, the media reported that thousands of employees working for Amazon are accessing voice and text transcripts of Alexa interactions. According to Amazon, this data is being reviewed and used by humans to help improve Alexa. At that time, Amazon also said that all consumers had to do if they didn’t want their data retained was to manually delete the audio files. Subsequently, Delaware Sen-
ator Chris Coons sent a letter to Amazon inquiring about Alexa’s data retention practices. Amazon’s response, published in the media in early July, called into question its earlier statements about the ability of consumers to delete their information. In part, Amazon stated that not all records of conversations with Alexa can be deleted by consumers, even if a consumer manually removes the audio files from their account. For example, transactional data likely containing personal data is retained. In response to Amazon’s recent admissions, Senator Coons stated that "Amazon's response leaves open the possibility that transcripts of user voice interactions with Alexa are not deleted from all of Amazon's servers, even after a user has deleted a recording of his or her voice…the extent to which this data is shared with third parties, and how those third parties use and control that information, is still unclear." Why is our data being retained? Who has access to it? Will it be shared or sold? How securely is it being kept? Is it accessible to hackers? The takeaway is this: if you’re thinking about buying a virtual voice assistant, think carefully about whether the convenience of having one, outweighs your privacy. If you decide to proceed, read the product’s consumer privacy disclosures to get as much information as possible about how your privacy will be handled, and don’t use the product until you’re fully informed. You should carefully examine any new technology you are considering using. If you don’t understand how it works or if you’re not sure you do, don’t use it.

Off the coast of South Carolina, about an hour north of Savanah, Georgia is Hilton Head, an island that juts out into the Atlantic Ocean that is filled with history, great food and golf! The island is not named after Paris Hilton, but after explorer William Hilton sailing under the banner of King Charles II of England. Liking the place, he

Leave time for a visit to Savanah though because this southern city charms just like Charleston, with grace and beauty and a vibrant waterfront. Its history is also very rich. Driving to your main destination of Hilton Head, you pass through a quaint town called Bluffton, worth a stroll through its Old Town with its old Live Oaks and Spanish Moss, it is the quintes-
so many years. Eagles, cormorants, osprey, all manner of seagulls, terns, herons, egrets, they got them all. And in the water, you will frequently find dolphins swimming by, sting rays, loggerhead turtles and bait fish trying to escape them. On two occasions, we were pulled out of the water due to shark sightings. If you are a foodie, then Hilton Head is for you. It is really hard to get a bad meal there. And if Continued on page 41

Continued from Page 40 you like southern food, boy are you in for a treat: grits, fried chicken, cornbread, fried green tomatoes. But the seafood is extremely fresh, and every variety can be found: Italian, Mexican, Chinese, you name it they got it. And music? Usually the music at a resort is run-of-the-mill stuff, guys who use loop-pedals, a lot of reverb, and a bunch of Jimmy Buffett songs. Not here. The bands and even solo artists are excellent, and the diversity of music covers not just modern country but a lot of up to date hip stuff too. I know because they covered Graytripper songs! But the real winners of a trip to Hilton Head are golfers. This small island boasts more golf courses than any golfer would ever want. The Sea Pines hosts the PGA tournament. A golfer could easily play five different courses in as many days if they so desired. Interestingly, no buildings are very tall as there is an ordinance that limits the height of buildings to no taller than the tallest tree.
And the trees are magnificent, especially the umbrella pines. And the tides are amazing, second only to the bay of Fundy in Canada, they rise and fall over eight feet every day. The water warms to over 80 degrees and is very shallow far out. Regarded as a barrier island, it is the second largest only to Long Island, which is not really a barrier island but a terminal moraine. Development came to the island through Scotsman, Charles Fraser, who developed Sea Pines. Fraser, an avid environmentalist, was instrumental in saving a very old, large live oak and is actually buried near it in Harbor Town next to the Lighthouse. The island is also known for its role after the Civil War, when freed slaves were granted their own land and developed and governed their own community, later known as Mitchelville. The flight is only about an hour and forty minutes, but you feel like you are in another world in this sub-tropical setting. Well worth a visit. Best time to visit is September or October.
