packed to the brim with 149 passengers in the summer. But one person on board has the best seat in the house, or the wheelhouse. On Monday, July 9, The Rockaway Times got a glimpse of that best seat by riding along with NYC Ferry Captain Justin Wilson, a Breezy Point summer resident, during a morning commute from Rockaway to Pier 11. As he pulled the boat away from the Beach 108th Street ferry landing, Captain Wilson made his regular departure announcements including welcoming passengers aboard and explaining some safety procedures, before answering all of The Rockaway Times’ questions during the quick, scenic trip to Sunset Park and then Pier 11. Fresh from graduating from SUNY Maritime in 2016, Captain Wilson landed an ideal gig close to home, working as a deckhand for NYC Ferry when the service first launched in May 2017. Ironically enough, he credits The Rockaway Times for letting him know about the opportunity. “Family and friends sent me clips from The Rockaway Times, letting me know that there was gonna be a Rockaway ferry starting up again. I followed the news about when applications would open and I
Living in Brooklyn during most of the year and having a summer home in Breezy Point, the commute to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where he starts his shift each day, was perfect. When Wilson graduated from SUNY Maritime, he already had a license to be a captain, but the opportunity to be a captain on NYC Ferry’s boats wasn’t open to him until more routes were added to the new citywide ferry service. He started to train as a captain for the service and by August 2017, Captain Wilson was among the many steering NYC Ferry’s boats through New York City’s waterways, including the Rockaway route. When he’s off duty, Wilson can be found enjoying summers in Breezy, surfing in Rockaway, fishing on the water, snowboarding in the winter or hitting the gym, but when he puts on the white captain’s uniform for the day, he starts his day by heading to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where the boats are kept overnight. He explained that maintenance and refueling is done there at night, which is why the ferry system doesn’t operate 24 hours. Depending what route he’s working that day, Captain Wilson will be at the Yard as early as 3:30 a.m. Continued on page 3

AYE AYE, CAPTAIN!
Continued from Page 2
Each morning, he meets with his deckhands to let them know what he needs done throughout the day, and then he heads to the wheelhouse, where he checks all of the instruments to make sure they’re working correctly before he heads out for his first pickup of the day. According to Wilson, each captain rotates through the system’s four current routes each week, so he has experienced steering boats on all of them. Which is his favorite? “It’s kind of a tie between Rockaway and East River,” Captain Wilson said. “The East River route is challenging, as it makes different stops very frequently. The conditions are always changing, so it’s a fun shift to do. It makes the day go by fast.” When Captain Wilson is on the Rockaway route, he makes about four to five round trips per shift, but he often gets to see familiar faces. “On the Rockaway route, I get to run into family and friends and I’ll invite them up to the wheelhouse to share this experience
with them,” he said. And what an experience it is. The views can’t be beat from the captain’s seat. After checking his surroundings and the radar to make sure he was on a clear, safe path, Captain Wilson shared a photo he had taken earlier that morning—a blue, orange and red sky behind the full Marine Parkway Bridge as the sun rose up behind it. Often working the early shift, Captain Wilson gets to experience sunrises that not many get to see, plus regular close-up views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, various bridges, Coney Island and more. “I have the best office in New York City,” he said. Despite only starting as a captain last year, his skills behind the helm are nothing short of impressive. That was made clear by the smooth trip and flawless effort to dock at the first stop in Sunset Park. Captain Wilson connected to the Brooklyn landing without a bump. How did he learn to do that? “Practice, practice, practice,” he said. As passengers disembarked in
Page 3
Brooklyn, he shared a story of a woman that actually missed her Brooklyn stop, because he docked so delicately, that she didn’t realize the boat had stopped moving. As he continued on to Pier 11, Captain Wilson showed and explained some of the tools at his disposal, including live radar screens, which the Rockaway boats have two of. The modern, interactive screens show him things like the depth of the water below and around him and nearby obstacles such as land and other vessels. Captain Wilson said there are occasional challenges when it comes to dealing with other vessels on the water. “Jet skiers are unpredictable and they’re often not educated on the rules of the road on the water, so basical-
ly we slow down when they're around,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of close calls and near misses on the water.” However, another nifty tool on board is a communication system that allows the captains to talk to any nearby vessels with a radio system. As he neared Pier 11, he used this system to radio a boat coming up on the rear, to let them know that the ferry would be turning into Pier 11, to avoid an at-sea T-bone accident. As he approached the Manhattan stop, Captain Wilson announced to his passengers, “Welcome to Pier 11,” and the boat unloaded before a massive crowd of beachgoers boarded for the return trip to Rockaway. Curious, we asked if the boat sinks deeper into the water when the beach crowd boards? “Yes,” Captain Wilson said. As NYC Ferry gets ready to launch its Soundview and Lower East Side routes later this summer, they’re looking for more crewmembers. If you’d like to be the next captain in the wheelhouse, head to www.ferry.nyc/careers

Battery Operated You drop the TV remote on the floor and the fun only starts. Not most of the time — every time — the batteries fall out. You’re not even finished cursing when at least one of those batteries starts rolling under the couch. You curse again as you see the little bastard disappear from view. You get down on your knees and you can’t find the thing. Or you can see it, way back there, probably just out of reach. You feel the blood
pouring into your head as you reach all the way, reach even further, …Jesus, your arm might get stuck. And finally... nothing. You curse again because you can’t reach the renegade battery and the thing is practically staring back at you with a smirk. You take a breath. You didn’t get the battery but on one level you’re pleased that your arm is ok. You’re crazy and you think maybe your arm has grown in the last 30 seconds so you’ll
try one more time. You reach and reach until this time you feel an arm cramp coming on. You gotta get out there now! Go Go! Get out. Now! Cramp coming! You’re on the floor and you roll onto your back. You look at the ceiling. You don’t want to move for a minute because you really don’t want to confirm that you’ve pulled a muscle. You’re out of breath. You don’t want anyone walking in right now. And it gets worse. The I- w a n t- t o -p u n c h - t h a t- k i d Kars 4 Kids commercial comes on. You really need to change the channel or hit the mute button as soon as possible. You can’t go old-fashioned and actually walk over to the TV because you have no idea where the on/off button is, let alone the volume dial. You get off the floor and must face the grim reality. The couch, the desk, the piece of furniture that is better left alone, must be moved. You’re afraid of what might be under there.
Page 5 Dust balls that look like they might have been alive once. A piece of candy that hit the floor and rolled out of sight, three years ago. You’re afraid to find the poor meatball that flung out when somebody sneezed. You take another look in your junk drawer hoping a spare battery pops out in the middle of allen key wrenches, scotch tape, string, paper clips, and little plastic bags with screws. But no such luck. You gotta do it. You need that battery; you need that remote working. Technology is supposed to make your life easier. Yeah, right. You move the furniture. It’s not that bad. There’s a coin, a pen, a small furry ball. And the battery. Somehow the battery got a coat of dust in the five minutes it’s been gone. You blow off the dust, slide it back into the battery slot, and triumphantly point the remote at the TV and click. Nothing. The battery is dead. Have a nice day.

For some local kids, it’s a summer of service and two girls recently spent a summer Saturday raising funds for a great cause. On Saturday, June 7, Gabby Sodano and Sabrina Paez set up a table on Rockaway Beach Boulevard in order to raise funds for Redemption Rescues Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization, which specializes in pitbull rescues and often partners with Animal Hospital of the Rockaways to help dogs in need. The girls sold hand-painted sea shells and beach signs to Rockaway visitors over a period of several hours and received an overwhelmingly positive response from generous individuals. In total, the dynamic duo raised $203 to assist the charity in its endeavors. Ms. Sloane Quealy-Miner, vice president of Redemption Rescues, visited the girls on Sunday, accompanied by
Ferdinand, a recently rescued 14-year-old pitbull whose tail wagged in grateful approval of their donation. Gabby and Sabrina hope to continue their efforts to raise awareness in Rockaway about animal rescue and responsible pet ownership throughout their summer school break. If you would like to make a donation to this dog rescue organization, please visit their website at: www.redemptionrescues.org or visit them on their Facebook page: Redemption Rescues, Inc.

***** Reminder: The Warriors are coming, tonight! Some of our wounded service members will be coming through town for a welcome parade at around 6:30 p.m., down Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Memorial Circle on Beach 120th Street, and back up to Breezy Point. Grab a flag and give them a warm welcome! ***** Another one we missed. Happy 90th birthday to Lenny Kohn of Rockaway Graphics. July 6 came and went and we’re kicking ourselves for not having the Rockaway legend in our This Week in History column. (He ran Lenny’s Amusements on the boardwalk way back when and has been making t-shirts and trophies and brochures, etc. for Rockaway groups for, well, a long time). Happy Birthday, Lenny! ***** It’s City of Water Day on Saturday, July 14. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) will host a bunch of activities around the bay with the main event area at the ferry landing at Beach 108th Street. The JBRPC is doing more and more to help make the bay accessible. They’re doing this event with help from the American Littoral Society Northeast Chapter. ***** Ever been to Rockaway’s castle aka The Wedding Cake house? The iconic building on Beach 117th and Newport Avenue in Rockaway Park will host Lightning Whelk, a group exhibition that draws inspiration from the lightning whelk mollusk, a sea dwelling snail. It opens July 14 and runs through August 5. There will be an opening reception on July 14 from 5-8 p.m. ***** The Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways has been re-
THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2018 scheduled to August 18. It’ll run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., after kicking off at the Beach 20th Street Pedestrian Plaza. There’ll be floats, steel pan bands, and moko jumbies (ok, we had to look that up. Moko jumbies are stilts walkers). The fun will culminate with live performances at Bayswater Park, located at 701 Beach 32nd. ***** We heard this was a longshot possibility after Sandy. Now, the Army Corps of Engineers is presenting the idea as one of five options for protecting the New York waterfront from storm surges. At public hearings, the Army Corps is proposing a five-mile long barrier from Sandy Hook, N.J., to Breezy Point. It would essentially be a gate that would close in advance of severe weather. ***** We have heard a lot of gripes about cars parking on fields (and seemingly everywhere) outside Riis Park when the parking lot fills up. It’s a tough call but it’s better than hundreds of cars going up and down nearby streets looking for parking (and deciding to risk a ticket and just park on no-parking streets). ***** A reporter for Vanity Fair, Maya Kasoff, tweeted a series of beach rules that got a lot of notice: “I am not a fussy person but I have rules for the beach and they are: 1. I only go to the Rockaways.” She followed that up “as New York’s #1 weekend ferry evangelist, I always take the ferry to the beach but until they build some sort of awning over the hot cement waiting area at the Rockaway pier, I practice selfcare by taking the A train back home.” ***** Reunion news: Class of 1970, St. Francis de Sales. Bungalow Bar, August 3 from 4 p.m. ***** The ROMEOWS, a film by Bob Sarnoff, will be showing at West End Temple on Thursday, July 19. Bob will be there for a Q and A. What’s The ROMEOWS about? Retired Older Men Eating Out Wednesdays.

Reopened Beach Fenced In With Disappointment By Kami-Leigh Agard
Just less than two weeks ago, when NYC Parks announced that the two-block beach portion between Beach 96th and Beach 98th Streets was reopened, local residents, businesses and visitors alike were riding a wave of jubilee. However, now that tide is changing because this beach reopening announcement has most drowning in disappointment. There is a lone sign that states: ”The beach will be closed for a period of time around high tide. Beach will reopen when
receding tide is past the tide marker.” This past Tuesday, July 10, this narrow strip was packed with people bemoaning that they felt caged in, and uncertain as to when they would be kicked out because of the rising tide. Joe from the Bronx and his crew said they have been visiting this strip in front of the Low Tide Concession on Beach 97th Street for over 20 years. “I feel like this beautiful beach is ruined for the summer. Look at this fence in front of me. I feel like a caged animal. Then what’s up with these tide markers? When the lifeguards and Parks’ people say the tide is coming in, they kick us all off

the beach. I usually come to Rockaway at least weekly just to go to the beach, but now, I no longer have the urge. Imagine, coming all the way from the Bronx, and then being told the beach is closed because of the tide. Do these people even know what a rising tide is? “And as for the City, it’s not Parks’ fault, it’s the mayor. He should have solved this months ago before jolting the public just before Memorial Weekend that 11 blocks of Rockaway Beach is closed because of beach erosion. You kidding me? He’s more concerned about adding housing for the homeless. And as for all of his grandiose announcements
that sand replenishment is the solution, what a big waste of hard-working taxpayers’ money. Ridiculous!” One Parks’ officer (who didn’t reveal his name), donning a green shirt agreed. “I see people coming here in droves in the morning, and we have to tell them they can’t go in the water, they have to sit behind the fenced area. People come here to get in the water, and they can’t. How are they supposed to predict the rising tide? The lifeguards are just doing their job. Some of them even stay in the water just to keep people safe, and an hour before the tide is predicted to come in past the marker, they have to whistle people out. Then, we the Parks employees become the bad guys when we have to further enforce it.” Local, Shane Murphy, who works for Low Tide Bar and La Fruteria, obliquely in front of the reopened strip of beach, is devastated. “The fences just Continued on page 11

deter people away from the beach because of how packed it gets. If you take out the fences, there’s at least 70 feet of shorefront. The lifeguards have talked to me and agree. Forget the rising tide, what if a fight breaks out? People will be in danger anyway, quarantined in these ridiculous fences. It’s pulling business away from us. July 4 was crazy. They opened the beach at 2 p.m., and it was absolute madness. Plus these Parks employees are uneducated when it comes to the ocean’s tides and waves. This concession is amazing with the diversity of food we offer, but now everyone is suffering,” Murphy said. As for Michael Powers, owner of Low Tide Bar, he’s confounded. “These fences, the tide pole markers are not just confusing people, but disrupting our business. Our profit line has decreased by at least 50 percent, and the season has
THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2018 just started. Remove the fences, and give the community a chance to survive this mess,” Powers said. The Rockaway Times contacted NYC Parks Department for an answer about how this can be rectified. This was their answer: “Parks was always aware that communicating around a changing tide schedule would be a challenge, and that is one of the reasons why we didn’t open this section initially. Ultimately, after discussions with the community, we made the decision to reopen this area in order to provide swimming access on a trial basis. As the beach season progresses, we are assessing our process and looking for ways to tighten up communication. By the end of this week, there will be new signage at the entrance to the beach listing the expected opening and closing hours each day. Where the daily high tide mark lands and how quickly the tide rises and retreats can vary from day-to-day, so the actual amount of time the beach is
open varies as well. Parks staff will fill in expected operating hours by hand daily. The fences are necessary for us to manage crowds when swimming is prohibited.” Rockaway Beach activist, Eddy Pastore, who lives just across the street from the reopened beach, says he’s not

surprised about this upset. “They just reopened that strip of beach to shut us up. It’s not just a recreation issue, it’s hurting all the residents and businesses who invested in this community. Summertime in Rockaway is like Christmas time to the retail industry, and well, we are suffering."

Worth A Visit Dear Editor: Thanks again for taking the time to talk to me last week about the Rockaways. When you asked me what brought me to the Rockaways, all I could think of in the moment was, “The Ramones.” But I knew there was something else…driving back to our AirBnB on Beach 73rd Street, I remembered it was the Queens episode of Anthony Bourdain’s, “Parts Unknown,” that got me thinking about checking out Rockaway Beach. What made our vacation
in the Rockaways a good one was the people we encountered who did their jobs with dignity…from the lifeguards who kept the beach safe, to the people who served up our food at Goody's, to the attendants who kept M&E Wash & Dry spotless, it was refreshing to spend time with people who valued our business. Add to this, the diversity of people I saw every morning at Dunkin’ Donuts, and Rockaway is a destination my wife and I are interested in returning to. On our last day on vacation, I was able to get take out food from Brisas Del Mar Spanish Restaurant and felt the presence of Anthony Bourdain. Upon leaving, I heard another customer ask about Anthony Bourdain… making we wish CNN and the Travel Network would send out a “plaque” of some kind memorializing Anthony Bourdain’s visit to food destinations around the world, including the Rocka-

Bike Sharing Coming to Town This Weekend By Katie McFadden
You may see even more bikes around town soon. Bike sharing is coming to Rockaway as part of a pilot program. Starting as soon as this weekend, you’ll begin to see more white and blue, and lime green bikes as Pace Bikes and Lime Bikes will make their Rockaway debut as part of the dockless bike share program. On Tuesday, July 3, the New York City Department of Transportation announced five dockless bike share companies that will be bringing their products to places that don’t have as much accessibility to dockless bikes that Manhattan does, including the North Shore of Staten Island, Coney Island in Brooklyn, the Fordham area of the Bronx, and Rockaway. Coming to our area will be Pace Bikes and Lime Bikes, which will be all throughout the peninsula. Pace Bikes are part of Zagster’s smart bike platform.
They will bring as many as 200 bikes to the peninsula as part of the pilot. Pace is unique in that it features smart bikes that lock to fixed objects — not just to themselves — to provide predictability and flexibility for riders while preserving order and safety for communities. Riders can rent bikes and park them at any public bike rack or other legal bike parking structure. “We’re thrilled to bring Pace to New York City, and operating in the Rockaways couldn’t be a better fit,” Zagster CEO Tim Ericson said. “As one of the top summer destinations
for NYC residents and tourists, Pace’s brand of lock-to dockless bike sharing will show how dockless bikes can operate alongside huge crowds heading out to enjoy the beach. The NYC DOT’s commitment to expanding transportation options across the five boroughs is a clear example of an innovative government in action. We’re excited to continue working with the city to make this pilot program the most successful it can be.” Two of the DOT’s announced bike share companies will also be offering pedal-assist (aka electric) bikes, which will legally be permitted for use starting July 28. Lime Bike is one of them. Lime will be bringing regular dockless bikes to the peninsula until July 28, when they’ll add pedal-assist bikes to the mix once the new law goes into effect. “Lime is thrilled to roll out our affordable, reliable dockfree bikeshare program in the Rockaways and Staten Island,”
Gil Kazimirov, Lime New York general manager said. “We look forward to working with DOT to create new transportation options that every New Yorker can enjoy — no matter where they live — for a cleaner, healthier more mobile city.” Each company’s pricing structure is expected to differ although dockless models around the country generally allow bikes to be rented in 30-minute increments via an app on a mobile phone, usually for $1 or $2 per ride. During the pilot, DOT will carefully evaluate companies’ compliance with requirements around data accessibility and user privacy. Evaluation criteria will also include the safety, availability and durability of the bikes themselves. In the evaluation period, DOT will also make a determination on future steps, including the possible implementation of pilots in different or expanded geographic areas.

ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival Takes Over the Peninsula This Weekend By Katie McFadden
Live music puts the rock in Rockaway and this weekend, the peninsula will surely be rocking as more than 60 bands will take over nine different venues as part of the 2nd Annual ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival, presented by Max Power. Last year’s inaugural ROCK! AWAY! Festival, mostly held at Riis Park Beach Bazaar, was a big success, but this year, it has exploded in size and awesomeness. Starting Friday, July 13, and continuing right through Sunday, July 15, bands and musicians playing every genre of music you can think of, will be playing across the peninsula. This time around, you’ll find live music from Arverne to Riis Park, with venues including the Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street,) The Rockaway Beach Bakery (87-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard), Epstein’s Beach (88-22 Rockaway Beach Boulevard), Rippers Concession on Beach 86th Street, Connolly’s on Beach 95th Street, Low Tide Bar at the Beach 97th Concession, Caracas at the Beach 106th Concession, AB-Studios (111-22 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) and of course, Riis Park Beach Bazaar. As far as the kind of music you’ll hear? Festival organizer Matt Preiss, also known as MAX POWER, says—“everything.” “Hip hop, pop, jazz, punk, garage, rock and roll—it literally covers everything. There’s even an open mic at the Brewery on Saturday that will allow anyone to show what they got. We’ll also have some great DJs at Caracas. It’s all about people that create and put out that great energy that music brings,” Preiss said. The acts will include everyone from local favorites like Big Squid, Wine With Sue, Rattrap Bumpkin, Blame Mercury, the Skells and Blac Rabbit, which recently made it to the Ellen Show, in the mix, plus some other big names like Chris Shifflett of the Foo Fighters play-
ing an acoustic set at Epstein’s, Mobley, a pop artist that’s currently on tour around the country, playing at Epstein’s and Riis Park, one-man band Hastings 3000, the Deaf Poets and more. In what he calls a “labor of love,” Preis began the ROCK! AWAY! music brand in 2014 to shine a light on Rockaway’s music scene and the many venues that host musicians. This year, with the help of local venues like the beach concessions offering up their venues and acts, that music scene will get more exposure as part of the ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival. With the festival covering such a wide area this year, Preiss has the help of many like Kelly Knapp of Noise Love, who helped book the acts at Rippers this weekend, Kim Gantz of Atypical Sounds, who helped bring in heavy hitter, Mobley to the lineup, Low Tide bringing in Wine With Sue, Caracas who’s featuring Big Squid , and more. “It’s people like that who’ve helped me bring some real fire to ROCK! AWAY!” Preiss said. He also credits Rich Hill with helping him start the ROCK! AWAY! music series in 2014. “He’s very busy now but he’s still helping and if it weren’t for people like him and everyone that’s pitching in, this wouldn’t be happening,” Preiss added. Most of the shows in the lineup will be free to the public, although some smaller venues like AB Studios, Epstein’s and Rockaway Beach Brewery may have a cover charge from $5 to $10, but Preiss says it’s “well worth it.” The costs help pay for the bands that are playing at those venues. For a full lineup and details, be sure to check out the schedule on page 16, but also stay updated by visiting Facebook.com/RockawayRock, as the schedule is subject to change. While this year’s ROCK! AWAY! festival may seem big, Preiss says he has plans to go even bigger next year, with more venues, more bands and sponsors to make it an unforgettable Rockaway event.

Army Corps Explores Giant Sea Barrier & Other Options By Katie McFadden
After Hurricane Sandy, when protective measures for our waters were being discussed, the idea of a barrier running from the tip of Breezy Point to Sandy Hook, NJ, was thrown around as a possible option. That idea seemed to fall to the wayside for a while until last week, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced public meetings to discuss that and four other options for the New York/ New Jersey Harbor region. With short notice about those meetings that were held in Manhattan, Newark and Poughkeepsie this week, the chance to hear about these plans has come and gone, but the option to give public comment remains open until August 20. Following Sandy, USACE began looking into “measures
to manage future flood risk in ways that support the longterm resilience and sustainability of the coastal ecosystem and surrounding communities, and reduce the economic costs and risks associated with flood and storm events.” In 2015, they conducted the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS), which identified nine high risk areas on the Atlantic Coast for further analysis based on preliminary findings. Among those were the New YorkNew Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Region. USACE then began to explore options for ways to manage flood risk in this area and presented those preliminary options in September 2017. (Note, this is a separate issue from the Rockaway Reformulation Study, which would include protective measures such as jetties on our beaches. This study is

expected to be released in August.) The focus of the public meetings held from July 9-11, were these alternatives as part of the New York-New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Coastal Risk Management Feasibility Study. The ideas were brought to the public to get a better idea of which alternatives may be best for this region that includes the waters off of New Jersey, New York Harbor and all the way up to Upstate New York. In its report, USACE explained that no alternatives can completely eliminate the risk of flooding in these areas, but they can reduce the frequency of flooding. The options that were given were to 1) No Action, 2) Create a NY/ NJ Lower Bay and Throggs Neck Surge Barriers, 3A/3B) Multiple Surge Barriers, Flood Walls and Levee Systems, 4) Solitary Bay and River Basin Surge Barriers, Flood Walls and Levees, and 5) Perimeter Work Only. Option 1 is exactly what it sounds like; do nothing and let nature take its course. Option 2 is of particular interest to our waters, as it would include a five-mile long concrete and steel barrier going through the water from Breezy Point to Sandy Hook, NJ. In its meetings, USACE gave several examples of these kinds of barriers at work in places like London and the Netherlands. Barriers such as this would come at a high cost of roughly $10 to $36 billion. Options 3 is also of local interest, as 3A would include smaller barriers, including one near the Verrazano Bridge, going from Brooklyn to Staten Island, and another going across the beginning of Jamaica Bay, from Rockaway to Brooklyn, plus levees running along Brooklyn and Rockaway. Option 3B would also include this Jamaica Bay barrier, plus another going from New Jersey to Staten Island, and levees and floodwalls in various locations. Option 4 would also
impact Rockaway, as it would include only the Jamaica Bay barrier, plus levees and floodwalls in various locations. Option 5 would simply include shoreline-based protective measures, mostly around New York Harbor. All of these options are conceptual, so not many details were available. At the New York Public Hearing meetings, many expressed concern over the environmental impacts of the options that include barriers in the water, saying that they would restrict water flow and impact sealife around New York Harbor. An article by Riverkeeper went as far as to say the barriers “would threaten the very existence of the Hudson as a living river.” Riverkeeper advised that the only ideal option would be Option 5. USACE has not fully explored the environmental impacts of each option, as this will come in the next steps of the study as USACE develops a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Through the public meetings, USACE is gathering info on what should be addressed in the EIS. While the public meetings are over, the public has until August 20 to weigh in on the proposal. Comments can be sent through email to: NYNJHarbor.TribStudy@usace.army.mil More information about the options can be found at: http://www.nan.usace.army. mil/Missions/Civil-Works/ P r o j e c t s - i n - N e w -Y o r k / New-York-New-Jersey-Harbor-Tr ibutar ies-Focus-Area-Feasibility-Study/ USACE hopes to release a draft report on their findings in the fall of 2018. After this report is released, further public meetings will be held and further public comments will be accepted. USACE hopes to release a final report in the spring of 2021 and submit their Chief ’s Report to Congress by Summer 2022, so that they can get started on construction.

TLC Interview: Author Peter Curran of Breezy Point By Marilyn Macron aka Maria Crowley
I recently spoke with Breezy Point’s Peter Orr, a.k.a., P. Curran, author of the Stay Out Of New Orleans Trilogy. Here’s our Q&A about life in Breezy, writing, books and more: TLC: You grew up in Breezy Point. Has this influenced your writing in any way? Orr: It used to, so it probably still does. I like to write about derelict buildings and ruins, and that stems directly from sneaking into the AIC, which was a fenced-off development abandoned halfway through construction. A lot of people referred to the spot as “the skeleton buildings. The Waldbaum's had been completed to the point that they'd installed the metal counters in the deli department. I was paralyzed
by heights, but I would climb into any haunted house in the dead of night. Kids who laughed at me on the Ferris wheel later paid grudging respect to my midnight dauntlessness in what we called the Cop Buildings, which were the brick ones along the road to the Silver Gull. One summer, some nonBreezy kids were staying at a bungalow down the block from me; they were religious kooks, by which I mean non-Catholic. Their parents didn't want them intermingling with us locals. Anyway, one of the boys got infatuated with a girl who lived next door, and he exposed himself to her. Several other people saw the kid and his brother spying in the girl's window the next night. The boys' father took the tack that the girl had made it all up, and revealed that he was a high-dollar psychiatrist from the Midwest, recently relocated to a Manhattan hospital. He
made his disdain evident for Breezy's indigenous Irish rabble. Big mistake. In a couple of days, this dispute concluded with the psychiatrist leading his family up Devon Walk, carting their belongings in a wagon, looking terrified, with two of his sons carrying baseball bats. That same summer, a family from Roxbury got voted out of the Cooperative because
their kids had committed a slew of vandalisms. The fami-
ly's father wound up pleading in vain to defend their right to stay, during a public meeting at the Breezy ball fields. I watched some of this tribunal from out in the parking lots. Suffice to say, Breezy Point had a lot of Shirley Jackson and Patricia Highsmith in it. I didn't live there year-round, by the way. TLC: Who/what are your favorite strange writers/stories? Orr: Hard to pick a favorite Robert Aickman story, but let's say "Growing Boys." Peter Straub called it "uncharacteristic." I disagree. Also hard to choose one Avram Davidson story. "Now Let Us Sleep" is his Hamlet (profound content), "Negra Sum" his Macbeth (sublime form). Plus Joseph Sheridan LeFanu’s "Carmilla" and William Faulkner’s "The Leg." TLC: Was there anything that you've experienced in New Continued on page 21

THE LITERARY CHICK
Continued from Page 20
Orleans that made you want to update the genre to there? Orr: The fact that I didn't need to. TLC: You have written a trilogy; how do they connect? Tell us something about your Stay Out of New Orleans Trilogy. Orr: It is a trilogy by accident rather than design. I wrote Stay Out of New Orleans between 1993 and 1999, The Breathtaking Christa P between 1997 and 2001, and Naught But a Shadow between 2001 and 2005. Then came the flood. Afterward, the books transformed into a time capsule, especially since they take place in the early, middle, and late decade, respectively. The first book combines hyperreal crime with the strange story, the second book is just the crime element (it's actually a Jim Thompson parody), and the final book is just strange. Certain locations recur between all three, and a number of characters from Stay Out turn up in Naught. The most unifying
factor is that revelations in one book will affect how you view events in the others. Most obviously (though how obvious can it be if I have to point it out?), the protagonist in Naught features in a Stay Out story that reveals a traumatic experience he never mentions in Naught (although both he and another character allude to it). TLC: What were your favorite books as a child? Orr: No Flying in the House The Martian Chronicles, Tales of Poe (don't remember the exact title) andThe Lottery. TLC: What were your favorite books as a teen in Breezy Point? Orr: Still The Lottery or any Robert Bloch. Also, Richard Matheson's Shock series and I was also the first Stephen King fan any of my Science Fiction Club friends ever heard of. TLC: If you could place one book on a high school curriculum, what would it be? Orr: The Real Frank Zappa Book. TLC: How do you organize your books? Orr: Never.

Affordable Units And Retail COMING TO DOWNTOWN FAR ROCKAWAY “After many decades of disinvestment, today we are turning the page for Downtown Far Rockaway,” so said Councilman Donovan Richards as he and various city agencies announced plans for 670 units of affordable housing as part of the redevelopment of Downtown Far Rockaway. On Wednesday, Richards was joined by the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) in announcing that The Community Builders Inc., a nonprofit developer, will create 224 affordable housing units, commercial and community facility space on a City-owned lot at Beach 21st Street. HPD and HDC have also recently closed on construction financing to deliver 457 units
of affordable housing for the initial phase of the Far Rockaway Village project, which will transform the neighborhood’s long-neglected shopping center into a mix of affordable housing, modern retail, and public space, serving as a village center for the neighborhood. Richards said the announcement is “another step in the direction of progress” and that “as with every project in the Rockaways, we will work with the developer to ensure that we address the highest com-
munity needs, such as daycare services, good jobs and quality retail.” Less than a year ago, the City Council approved the neighborhood’s rezoning. At the time, the City said it was “committed to reestablishing the area as a dynamic mixed-use neighborhood and the commercial hub of the peninsula.” “We’re making good on our promise to Downtown Far Rockaway. The City is delivering unprecedented investment that will improve the lives of residents and bring new vibrancy and opportunity to the neighborhood,” NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett said. According to the City, the Beach 21st Street development will be transformed into a mixed-use, mixed-income development with more than 130 units allocated for households earning up to 60 percent
of area median income. The remaining units will be offered at a range of affordability levels. The project will also create approximately 24,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 8,000 square feet of community space for early childhood education and other community services, and approximately 90 parking spots for residents of the building and the public. Adjacent to a planned DOT pedestrian plaza and across the street from the new Beach 20th Street plaza, the project will deliver new retail and housing options in a central site in the neighborhood, encouraging new investment throughout the rezoning area. The project is expected to create more than 70 permanent jobs and over 470 conContinued on page 35

More On Supplements Dietary supplementation, which I have written about before, is about a $30 billion industry in the U.S., with more than 90,000 products on the market. Recent national surveys have found that 52 percent of adults reported use of at least one product and 10 percent reported use of four or more products. Vitamins and minerals are among the most popular supplements and are taken by about 45 percent of adults to maintain health and prevent illness. Despite this enthusiasm, most studies of vitamin and mineral supplements have not demonstrated clear benefits for prevention of diseases that are not re-
lated to nutritional deficiencies. Indeed, some studies have found that taking these supplements in amounts that exceed the recommended dietary allowance (RDA), especially high doses of beta carotene, folic acid, vitamin E, or selenium, may have harmful effects including increased risk of death, cancer, and stroke. Most clinicians advise patients to get vitamins and minerals from food instead of supplements. A healthy diet leads to positive health outcomes. Although routine nutrient supplementation is not recommended for the general population, targeted supplementation may be warranted in cer-
tain high-risk groups. Let’s look at some of these high-risk groups and recommendations for their dietary supplementation: • Pregnancy – folic acid and prenatal vitamins • Breastfed infants and children – vitamin D until weaned and iron from age 4-6 months • Older adults – vitamin B12, vitamin D and/or calcium • Bariatric surgery patients – fat-soluble vitamins, B vitamins, iron, calcium, zinc, copper, multivitamins/multiminerals • Pernicious anemia – vitamin B12 under the tongue or injected once a month • Crohn's disease, other inflammatory bowel diseases such as celiac disease – iron, B vitamins, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium • Long-term proton pump inhibitors (P.P.I.) (i.e. Nexium) - use vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium • Metformin – vitamin B12 When reviewing the use of vitamins and supplements with a clinician, it is important that the patient lists all that are taken. Some supplements may interfere with the efficacy of prescription
medications (i.e. vitamin K and warfarin) or interfere with laboratory tests (i.e. biotin [vitamin B7] interferes with cardiac blood test results). Patient-friendly interaction checkers are available for free online (search for interaction checkers on drugs.com, WebMD, or pharmacy websites). It is important to remember that the FDA is not authorized to check and review dietary supplements prior to their being marketed, however manufacturers are required to adhere to the FDA’s Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines. The bottle label should state that the manufacturer adheres to the GMP guidelines. Also, consumers should select products that have been certified by independent testers such as ConsumerLab. com, U.S. Pharmacopeia, NSF International, or Underwriters Laboratories (UL). These certified product testers ensure that the product contains the labeled dose(s) of the active medication(s) and does not contain heavy metals, microbes, or other toxins. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

Creating a Positive Attitude “You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.” Joyce Meyer What a wonderful world we live in and yet we are surrounded by such negativity and darkness. How does one stay positive with such negative energy and suppression? Stress, sadness, trauma, loss of a loved one — can really bring a person down. It is not so easy to put on a happy face when, in fact, you are sad and lonely. There are some easy ways to create a positive life. For one
thing, stay more present. Yes, you have heard it many times in this column and we will always continue to remind and encourage you to stay in the moment. It is a blissful moment when you are present. Letting go of the past is something that will free your mind. It’s ok to visit the past, but try not to cling to it. Remember, honor, and then move on. There are no guaranties in life. We have today, so live it well and be content. My mom always said to me, “Be content and you will always be
happy.” The best advice I ever received. Helping a person who is not so happy is a great service in life. Holding space for them and sending loving prayers their way will help pave the way to happiness. Sharing your positive energy with someone who is going through rough times is a gift. We are meant to share and support one another, especially during challenging times. I have a sister, Janet Fash, who is a ball of positive energy. When she enters a room, she brings laughter and cheer to everyone. She was born like this. For as long as I can remember, Janet has been full of life and happy-go-lucky. She is also someone who shares her positive energy with those who need it. She will make you laugh and sometimes cry! She has a heart of gold. My best friend in life who knows all my secrets. Moving your body and keeping active is a great way to keep your energy posi-

In Rockaway, Breezy, Roxbury and Broad Channel, we are a community that supports and helps one another. Reach out to a neighbor and ask for help if you need it. Most people I know are more than willing to spend time with a person who needs comfort. “Each morning night’s curtain opens on a new day. You are invited to join the great opening. Open your ears. Open your heart. Open your eyes to the sacred path you travel every day, the path of the hours. Greet the hours with joyful awareness. Greet the hours with faithful presence. Greet the hours with a reverential bow. Greet the hours with a sacred pause. Reverence each hour as a small stepping stone on your pilgrimage through the day. Receive the gift of seven sacred pauses. Practice waking up seven times a day.” -Macrina Wiederkehr

ARVERNE BOARDWALK SCENE – 1932 Ham and Cheese Sliders
By Katie Lucev
The front entrance of the Arverne Boardwalk Theater was adjusted to conform to the new city-built ocean promenade, which had a 40-foot width. The old walk was 25 feet wide. By this time, bathing suits of the 1930s were more revealing and making past swimming attire like wearing a “tent” to the beach! Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018)

Pigs And Tight Spaces
Just a quick reminder to all of you out there that the Broad Channel VFW Post 260 will be hosting it's annual "Pig Roast" this Saturday (July 14) from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Everyone I speak to who intends to attend this porcine gala has been psyched and why shouldn't they be? After all, the same old hot dogs and hamburgers get old after a while, but put
on a pig roast and you've got a show! The most often asked question is "Will the pig have an apple in its mouth?" It will not. Other queries have ranged from how much the pig weighs, how long it took to cook and what parts are edible. (Answer to the last - almost all of it, including the ears, tongue, snout, and cheeks, known to be particularly succulent.) And here's a little tidbit only for the readers of this column, a little birdie told me that Bruce Fuller will be entertaining all those in attendance with his rendition of "Don't go bacon my heart...I couldn't if I fried..." as the pork is being served! You won't want to miss that as that alone is worth the price of admission! So, grab all your meat-loving family members, friends, and neighbors and head on down to Shad Creek Road this Saturday for a veritable sensory overload of pork gone hog

wild! And for all you squeamish, sentimental vegetarians out there, be still your racing hearts! The guys and gals at the VFW have made sure all the requisite rabbit food will be available for you - corn, salad, and watermelon, but, c’mon…why bother? It’s $25 for adults, $10 for the youngsters and children 10 and under can sneak in free! All are welcome. Don’t miss it! As always, all proceeds from this affair will go to benefit our veterans. A trip to the supermarket is fraught with inconveniences and awkward moments, but I have long considered myself to be a shopping veteran, well-versed in knowing how to navigate the aisles in order to make my shopping experience a bit more palatable. That being said, I recently had the opportunity to visit the Key Food supermarket over in Howard Beach last week and it was quite the adventure. A
trip to this supermarket is an out-of-body consumer experience, best attacked alone and with your brain on standby. There was a line of cars on Cross Bay Boulevard waiting to turn into the driveway leading to the store's small parking lot in the rear of the building. It took me almost 10 minutes to snake down the driveway into the lot, where I discovered that the parking lot was full and parking space only became available when another vehicle actually pulled out and exited the lot. At one point, I actually expected to see a Disney-esque sign stating: "Waiting Time for Available Parking from this point - Approximately 10 minutes!" Alas, parking difficulties were just a harbinger of things to come! Immediately upon entering the interior of the store, I was taken aback by the fact that Continued on page 31

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES Continued from Page 30 almost every aisle and walking space had been seemingly reduced in size in order to accommodate the Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz. Every turn in the store had to be undertaken slowly and methodically in order to avoid multiple shopping cart collisions and was accompanied by an expectation that I would be greeted with a song by members of the Lollipop Guild as you entered into the new aisle. To say the aisle space between shelves was minimal is being overly generous as these aisles are sorely in need of traffic signage denoting shopper transit through each of them as one way only! Halfway down one aisle in question, I noticed a woman turn into the far end of the aisle and start proceeding towards me. We met in the middle, unable to pass each other, whereupon she simply stopped and stared at me sternly stating: "Well?"
Realizing that the two of us were in flagrant disregard of the long-held axiom of supermarket etiquette, to wit: "If you're standing still, you're in the way!" I decided to back up and out of the aisle in order to allow her to proceed but not before I asked her if she had any idea how long ago it was that Rick Moranis had shrunk this particular supermarket along with his kids. Mind you, the store staff was both helpful and friendly, but by the time I made the checkout line, I felt like Gulliver in the island country of Lilliput and I couldn't get out of the store fast enough. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Rain Barrel Giveaway on July 28 Save the date! Another rain barrel giveaway is coming up at the end of the month. Continuing in his effort to help homeowners conserve water, State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. is again partnering with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato for another free rain barrel giveaway in Rockaway. Constituents who live in either Addabbo’s or Pheffer Amato’s district have the opportunity to register to receive a free 55-gallon rain barrel on Saturday, July 28. These rain barrels can attach to a home’s gutter in order to collect and store rainwater, which can later be used to complete household tasks. Those who pre-register must pick up their free rain barrel from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. Camillus Church, located at 99-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. After 12 p.m., the remaining barrels
will be distributed to the public on a first-come firstserve basis. “By using these free rain barrels, residents can store excess rainwater and use it at a later time to do chores around the house, such as washing the car, cleaning the outside of the house, or watering plants,” Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. “The benefits of this are twofold. With a rain barrel, people can save money on their water bills, as well as conserving water for the environment.” Addabbo has had several free rain barrel giveaways within his district this year and has given out over 300 rain barrels. To register to receive a rain barrel on July 28, contact Addabbo’s Howard Beach Office at 718-738-1111 or visit https:// www.nysenate.gov/webforms/free-rain-barrel-giveaway-registration-july-28th.

The project is expected to break ground in 2019, with completion in 2021. The Far Rockaway Village phase of the Downtown Far Rockaway plan, will replace the largely abandoned shopping center with new mixed-income housing, centralized public space, and enhanced retail that better serves the community. The first phase of the project will also deliver 92,000 square feet of commercial space and 23,000 square feet of public plaza space to the heart of the neighborhood. Construction of the first phase of the project is expected to be complete by late 2021. The City’s comprehensive plan for Downtown Far Rockaway includes efforts from a range of City agencies, and investments in infrastruc-

FUNKY FRIENDS Dear Enchantress, I have a question for you. How do I deal with friends that don't understand me? I have a boyfriend and he gets me, but with them, I feel like I'm constantly working to prove how busy I am with really big things, and they always ask me to go out drinking or chilling on the beach, and I don't have that kind of time. Also when I do hang out with them at a bar or the beach, they drink so much, and I find it boring. I also feel mean for calling them boring, who am I to judge, but everything they do seems so immature. I have had these same friends since high school, and we are all in our 20s now. How do I deal with them, and how do I get them to understand me so we can have fun together again. I'm constantly judging them. Dear Enchanted Judge, You sound like a great witness to people that once were your friends, and now seem to be friends of the past. I won't beat around the bush here, if you no longer have fun and feel misunderstood, it’s time to accept that right now these friends need space. I imagine you are more mature than them, and this doesn't make them less than or wrong. It makes them exactly who they are, which leaves room for you to declare, you are who you are. When people are out of alignment or work is out of alignment, or anything really, one person suffers or both can. Forcing something to be
a certain way never works. Not spending time with these friends does not mean you are being mean or wrong, it's giving them space. Perhaps you will reunite as friends or you will be friends from afar. This strained relationship will not work if you continue to try to explain yourself or wish and hope they will change. In the meantime, focus on you, and have fun being you! Reassure yourself that it's normal to feel guilty, but being with people that don't feel good, doesn't feel good for them either, so you are doing both a favor by living your life, and spending time with your boyfriend. Making sure you FEEL good with who you surround yourself is a way of loving yourself and THAT is when magical opportunities and people that are aligned show up in your life. Love, The Enchantress Enchantress Shane guides women with confidence in their passion driven business, art, or creativity. For more info go to: www.enchantedembodiment.com

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Let’s Get Naked About Autism These past few weeks have been tough on a multitude of levels, and amidst all the challenges of daily living, I had an increasingly short circuit with my daughter. She was full of energy and zest — to YES — destroy everything in the house. Maybe it was the heat, or what I interpreted as a determined mode to demand attention by doing what most children do — autistic or not — test your limits. From deciding to give herself a facial with a pot full of vaseline, decimating her nana’s clothing closet to the point that the shelves now function as stepping stools, to in the blink of an eye, jumping into the shower for the umpteenth time of the day, viciously biting us when she couldn’t have her way — we were all at a breaking point and of course well, exhausted. And that’s only a fraction of all her shenanigans, too much to list, and I’m too tired to relive each. I found myself screeching at her, then feeling guilty, thinking it’s not her fault, she doesn’t realize what she is doing, she has autism. I shared my thoughts with my granny, who protested, “No, she damn well know what she’s doing! Like any child, she wants her way, and knows how to pull your strings!” I pulled back a bit, then started to carefully observe her actions. I would gingerly
tip-toe to the bedroom, to see what she was doing, and she would immediately give a side glance and look up as if to say, “I heard you, now what?” I began to wonder if she had bionic hearing. Reprimanding her didn’t work, as she would purse her lips, sulk for a moment, then bolt away laughing. I purchased a 55inch exercise ball that her occupational therapist recommended, well within a week, it’s now flat as a pancake, and I just bought a new one. God knows how long it will survive our bouncing jack rabbit. Recently on a casual trip to the supermarket, I couldn’t get her to exit the car. For over half-an-hour I was screeching at the top of my lungs, coaxing her to get out. I had work to do, and this was not the time for me to be patient. I collapsed in the back seat beside her, crying my eyes out. She then looked at me with a concerned look, rubbed my back, then took my hand and beckoned for us to get out of the car. Why am I divulging all this? To let folks know that despite my daughter’s autism, she is probably more intuitive and sensitive than us “neurotypicals.” Since that day in the car, she has calmed down a bit (don’t get me wrong, she’s still a handful!), but my pivotal moment with her came when I allowed myself to show my raw emotions. I believe be-
cause I was so wrapped up in trying to get her to do what I wanted, all she needed to see was her mom’s true feelings. Screeching at her didn’t work, crying did. I still don’t know what to make of this, but if anyone of you out there has a similar experience, please share. This is why I write this column and founded Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF). Autism is an enigma with a wide spectrum that is impossible to generalize, and caregivers and friends with loved ones on the spectrum need to be able to get naked and share their experiences and learn from each other. The next RBAF meeting is going to be Thursday, July 19 at 7 p.m. at La Barracuda, located at Beach 97th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Also, join us tonight, July 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at RBAF’s Dance Out Under The Stars for Autism Awareness at Caracas, Beach 106th Concession. DJ Byg Fury will be spinning an eclectic genre of
Page 41 music handpicked by parents in our group. It’s going to be a fun night to cut loose and show off your funky dance moves! Lastly, big shout out to 100th Precinct’s Sergeant JulieAnn Stapleton and her crew of Neighborhood Community Officers for a fantastic NYPD Autism Awareness event hosted with RBAF last Thursday, July 5. From the mounted policemen, service dogs and the opportunity to sign up for the NYPD’s Child Safety Program, it was a fabulous evening for everyone. The NYPD’s handsome horses enchanted the entire Boulevard! Also, thank you to Nicole Russell of Last Dragon Pizza, who generously donated her famous pies, and Martha Acosta of La Barracuda, who hydrated attendees with her delicious cucumber mint agua fresca. Thrilla in Camilla Throws Down For a Cause on Friday By Katie McFadden
The Fourth of July fireworks may be over, but fireworks are about to go off in the St. Camillus Parking lot as FDNY Bravest Boxing takes on the London Metro Police Department in the ring for the Thrilla in Camilla on Friday, July 13. Plus, the grand finale will include a not-to-miss grudge match as locals Ryan MacNamara and Danny Quinn go head to head, but all for a good cause. At 6 p.m. on Friday, the gates of the St Camillus parking lot (189 Beach 99th Street) will open and the bell will ring at 7 p.m., marking the start of the preliminary bouts in the boxing ring. The preliminary bouts include a super heavyweight match, a female welterweight match and a heav-

yweight match. Then FDNY Bravest Boxing and London Metro Police will head into the ring with two heavy-
weight matchups, a female welterweight bout, two male welterweight matchups and a middleweight fight. These matchups are a part of the Transatlantic Championship, and it’s expected that London will put up quite the fight, as they try to reclaim the championship after losing to FDNY Bravest Boxing on their home turf in October 2017. FDNY Bravest Boxing went on to keep that title when they took on Garda Siochana Boxing Club- Irish National Police. FDNY Bravest Boxing will give it their all the defend their title, but event organizer and FDNY Bravest Boxing President Bobby McGuire says they have a leg up on the competition. “Usually the hometown team has an advantage because you can use all of your fighters, while the traveling team can only use the guys
that traveled for the event,” McGuire said. These bouts will include an intermission and the announcement of the 50/50 raffle winners for the cause that inspires this event. Since its start in 1982, FDNY Bravest Boxing has “believed in raising money for good causes through spirited competition,” McGuire said. The goal of Thrilla in Camilla is to support veterans. Those who serve and protect their city as members of the FDNY, battle it out in honor of those who serve and protect their countries, especially those who have given their all. The event serves as a way to raise money for Building Homes for Heroes (BHFH). BHFH has changed hundreds of lives by building or modifying homes, and gifting them, mortgage free, to injured veterans and their Continued on page 43

THRILLA IN CAMILLA
Continued from Page 42 families. Two of these BHFH heroes will be present at this year’s event— U.S. Marine First Lieutenant James Byler and U.S. Army Sergeant John DiRaimo. On October 17, 2010, U.S. Marine First Lieutenant James Byler of Huntington, Long Island, an infantry platoon leader with the Third Battalion, 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton, California, was injured when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) while leading his platoon on a dismounted patrol of a narrow alley in Northern Helmand Province, one of the deadliest provinces in Afghanistan. Both of Byler’s legs were amputated above the knee, and he lost both pinky fingers. BHFH conducted a major renovation on Byler’s home that meets his needs. U.S. Army Sergeant John DiRaimo is a 30-year veteran that survived a Humvee crash
THURSDAY, JULY 12, 2018 and was able to rescue a fellow soldier from the damaged vehicle. DiRaimo suffers from severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and has a service dog. BHFH helped build him a brand new home in Florida that helps ease some of his stress by offering comforting features like a water fountain and a security system. With the money raised at Thrilla in Camilla, FDNY Bravest Boxing is able to help BHFH continue its mission. Last year, the FDNY Bravest Boxing was able to raise and donate $30,000 to BHFH, and has donated more than $100,000 to the cause altogether. This year, they hope to surpass last year’s funds by raising $40,000. To do so, tickets are sold for $25 each for general admission and $50 for ringside seats, plus there will be a 50/50 raffle and sports memorabilia up for auction, all to raise money for the cause. Several groups and businesses have also made donations including bout sponsors, Local 282,

Page 43 more. “We always hope to raise more each year and this has become a community event. A lot of local businesses have chipped in and have really helped make this a community-wide event,” McGuire said. For true boxing fans, the veterans won’t be the only special guests on Friday. Former American former professional boxer Iran Barkley and former undisputed World Middleweight Champion Vito Antuofermo will be making an appearance to show their support for the event. Last but not least, two locals will take to the ring for a very special grudge match. “This is an all-Rockaway grudge match, as Danny Quinn from Ladder Co. 136 and Ryan MacNamara from Ladder Co. 20, both local guys, are lacing up for the first time to help a charity,” McGuire said. Don’t miss out on the action. Tickets can be purchased in advance at FDNYBoxing. com or at the gate, before the event.

Ringing in the 4th on Beach 133rd Beach 133rd knows how to celebrate the 4th. On Wednesday, July 4, the block held its 7th Annual July Fourth Parade. The children of Beach 133rd Street marched from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the beach wall, where they assembled and recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. The parade ended with breakfast for all. Beach 133rd Street is a unique block in Belle Harbor. “We live on a very close-knit block, many have been here for many years,”
neighbor Larry Gray said. “As a matter of fact, many of the children who've grown up here have come back and purchased their parents' homes and now have their own children on 133rd. “Mary Quinn is the oldest resident. She is 95 and has lived here for 65 years. Her grandson, Owen, his wife, Maryellen, and Mrs. Quinn's great grandson live with her. “It is this devotion to Rockaway and its values that make this one of the best places in the world to live,” Gray said.
Sandcastle Contest Set For July 29
Mark your calendar! The 3rd Annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is Sunday, July 29! On July 29, head down to Beach 117th Street to get in on the fun. Bring your sand tools and your imagination and create a castle, mermaid, truck, or whatever you can think of...using sand. All experience levels and all ages welcome! Registration begins on the boardwalk at Beach 117th at 11 a.m. The contest begins at
12 p.m., sharp, so don't be late! The contest ends at 2 p.m. You can enter as an individual or a group (five people or less!) in three different age categories: 0-8, 9-15 and 16 and up. Judges will go around and select the best of the best. There will be awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the three age categories. Winners will receive trophies and other prizes such as gift certificates to local businesses. Participants won't go home empty-handed. There will be medals and other giveaways, as supplies last. If you're a local business that would like to donate prizes, or if you're a participant that has questions, please contact: katie@rockawaytimes.com.

COURTHOUSE STEPS?
We know, we know. The promises, the starts and stops, the excuses, and just plain old baloney, have been the only things we’ve heard about the courthouse on Beach Channel Drive and Beach 90-91st for years. For decades. Developer Uri Kaufman told us this week “We're literally inches away. We
should have the building permit in hand on Thursday. We plan to post it the minute we have it. We will build the construction fence at that time. And we have a tentative closing date with the bank for the construction loan for July 31.” Kaufman has plans to develop the building as a medical center.
