A Warrior Welcome It was a welcome fit for heroes. On Thursday, July 6, residents from Rockaway Park to Breezy Point lined the streets as they awaited the arrival of several wounded warriors from the Hope for the Warriors program. With flags and banners in hand, neighbors gave the visitors a warm, patriotic welcome as they paraded through town on Thursday evening. Throughout the rest of the weekend, the warriors got to enjoy surf lessons, paddle boarding, boating, receptions, fireworks, a dinner cruise around Manhattan and more. The event was made possible by several volunteers and help from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY), NYPD and Rockaway Point Yacht Club. The Gary Sinise Foundation provided hotel accommodations for the warriors and their families, and the Port-
able Pig Man provided food throughout the weekend. The weekend came to a close with a memorial Mass at the 9/11 Memorial in Breezy Point on Sunday, July 9. “Words cannot express our gratitude for all involved to make this weekend possible!” Hope for the Warriors said on their Facebook page. Just Thought I’d Share Hope you’re in the mood for a little stress. It’s the kind of stuff I love to share. I know a lot of you stop by this column for medical advice. Yeah, if you want to be official and all that, you can check out Ask The Doc, but I know if you follow Boyleing Points you come here for questionable advice and special-brand quackery. Although no one can reasonably question last week’s column about the importance of a colonoscopy, many have scoffed at my declaration that your back pain is all in your head. Quick note, the founding father of such science, Dr. John Sarno (and that Dr. before his name is legit), went to the big pain free farm in the sky a couple of weeks ago. People complain about back pain and no one believes me when I say it’s all in your head. But if I say stress is causing it, they agree. So it’s not in their head but stress is the culprit. Somehow they draw the distinction. Whatever. Point is, you gotta manage your stress. (And you can go to another column, Be Well, Be Happy for that). But sometimes the stuff that gives you stress is really, uhm, stressful. And there’s nothing to do about it except put your head in the sand and hope the worst doesn’t happen. Like nuclear war with North Korea. There’s not much good that comes out of worrying about that. No, I have another stress I’d like to share with you so you can worry along with me. (Ain’t this a nice summery, breezy read?) Last week Google and Amazon and some other stocks sunk almost 90 percent, or so it seemed. Some glitch caused some stocks to tank and a few to soar. If you happened to have owned any of the tankers you might have
had a heart attack before news broke that it was some tech malfunction. Which gets me to my favorite source of stress. What happens if the Internet turns on you. Just you. Imagine if your bank account is just gone. Your 401k or kid’s college account is zeroed out. Gone. Not stolen, just gone. Your credit cards were tied to that account. Can’t use them now. You’ve got a paper statement so you think there’s proof that you have assets. You run to the bank. The bank manager hasn’t actually seen a paper statement before. But after he calls someone he says it looks like you might have HAD an account but they can’t find it now. And that paper statement is only through the end of the month. Maybe you emptied out the account, they say. But, don’t worry, they’ll look into it some more. Don’t worry!?! There’s no class action, no army of similarly robbed account holders. It’s just your account that’s been disappeared. You’d like to hire a lawyer but how’re you gonna pay him? Ah, but your friend’s a lawyer, he’ll help you for free. But it’s a holiday weekend and the banks are closed and he’ll look into it next week. Maybe the bank will be like Build It Back and never find any paperwork. Now from listening to all my zenny yoga flower friends, I know I shouldn’t worry about things I have no control over. But I wonder if I do have some control and maybe I should go full mattress. Empty out the bank account before some hacker does. Or some glitch makes me disappear. But if you go all cash you gotta get money orders and wait on line and…god, the stress! I need a drink. Bars still take cash, don’t they?

ROCK! AWAY! at Riis Park By Katie McFadden
Let the music draw you in to Riis Park this weekend. The first-ever ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival, a live music extravaganza featuring more than 30 acts, is taking place over the course of three days. If you head down to Riis Park Beach Bazaar this weekend, you’re in for even more of a treat beyond lobster rolls and gourmet pizza. Max Power, who some may know as Matt Preis, has been supporting the local music scene since he moved to the area in 2013. He has hosted many smaller shows and open mics at local venues since launching the ROCK! AWAY! brand and music series over the past few years. This weekend will be his biggest production yet. “I’ve always wanted to do a music festival. The opportunity came along to have a weekend at Riis, so I decided to make it as big as possible,” Power said. Back in February, Power went to
work, acquiring some sponsorships and reaching out to potential acts, to create an amazing music lineup for a show that is completely free to the public. “I reached out to everybody and I’ve done a lot of work to make this happen and I hope it’s something that can happen every year. Rockaway needed this,” he said. ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival is a three-day affair featuring local musicians, out-of-town acts and touring bands playing a range of genres including county, Irish, pop, indie, hip hop, surf tunes, punk, hardcore and of course, rock. Many will play with a full sound system on the main stage at Bay 9, while others will be playing acoustic sets in the two busking areas located at Slice O’ Whit’s and Cuisine by Claudette at Riis. The festival will showcase a lot of younger local bands like Arson Welles, Rattrap Bumpkin, Blame Mercury, Blac Rabbit, the BEasy Band, Lorena Leigh, The Forms and The Skells. Locals, John Bax-

ter and John Simonelli, will also be some of the many artists to play in the busking area. Artist Masato Okano will also be live painting the event throughout the weekend. For those not familiar with busking, Power describes it as “when someone comes in to a bar or restaurant with an instrument and asks if they can play in exchange for tips. They play a few songs, and if they’re good, they can stay. If they’re not, the bartender will ask them to leave. It was something I encountered in Europe a lot. This also includes playing on the street for tips, which almost every musician I know has done at some point. Last year in New York City, there was a Busking Day on July 15. We’ll have two busking areas in Riis that day, where people will be playing acoustically. This gives singers-songwriters a chance to be involved and a way to keep the music going all day. We hope to create that same energy of busking and that magic that can happen when someone walks into a bar and starts playing,” Power said. The whole festival starts Friday at 5 p.m. at Bay 9 at Riis Park Beach Bazaar where Vic Thrill of the Bogmen will kick off the show on the main stage, followed by three bands including local favorite Arson Welles. On Saturday, the fun kicks off at noon, and the day will be jam-packed with music at the main stage, plus the two busking areas, all day until 7 p.m. Many local favorites will be playing on Saturday, plus Jason Loewenstein of the band Sebadoh, which Power says is one not to miss. Sunday will “end in a bang,” according to Power. “On Sunday, the music will have a lot of people jumping around and having a blast and that’s intentional,” he said. Some highlights include Rincon, P.R. favorite, The Disfunction, local favorite, The Skells, plus Toranavox and Wonder Muff. The music starts at noon on Sunday and continues until 9 p.m. All of the music takes place outdoors, but in the event
of rain, it will be moved to the Rockaway Brewing Company on Beach 72nd Street. A big event such as this wouldn’t be complete without an after party. ROCK! AWAY! Music Festival has three of them, one for each night of the festival. On Friday and Saturday, the after party takes place at A/B Studios (111-22 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) and admission is $5. Power wouldn’t go into detail, but a surprise act is slated to play at the after party on Friday, which starts at 9 p.m. and goes until midnight. On Saturday, the after party starts at 8 p.m. and includes Avi Jacob, The World’s Greatest Detective and The Disfunction. Sunday’s party will take place at the new Epstein’s Beach on Beach 90th Street. A special guest will also be performing then, followed be a DJ dance party. “Just take off of work on Monday,” Power suggests, as the fun will go all night long. Power says he’s had a lot of help to make this event possible and has many to thank, including Rich Hill, Michael Nolan aka Cosmo, who has been a big supporter of local music, the Mermaids of Rockaway, Kim Gantz of atypicalbeastsagency.com, Jimmy Dowd of St. James, Tom Jodice, who will be running the sound on Saturday and Sunday, Nick Mastros of A/B Studios, Jean Sean, Will Abrams, Music Fest News, Rockaway Brewing Company, The Rockaway Times, Deep Eddy Vodka, Ducky Johnson, and many more. “My main motivation behind this whole thing is that I love and support music, I love Rockaway, and if I'm able to put this together and give it to people, then I want to, and so far it seems like it’s all happening,” he said. “This weekend is going to beautiful. There’s going to be a huge concentration of beautiful energy and amazing bands and you won’t be disappointed.” See the accompanying ad for the schedule. Lineup is subject to change. ***** The Firecracker 5K and Half Marathon is Saturday, July 15. The half marathon kicks off at 7 a.m. and the 5K starts at 9:30 a.m. Both start and end at the Community House. Check out RockapulcoRun.com for sign up and other info. ***** There was a rumor that condos and maybe a hotel were going up on the bay at 87th Street (near the old Rosie’s bait shop and used tire place). Turns out there is a Build It Back job going on, with permits for a house elevation. Nothing more according to the Buildings Department. We know the property changed hands after Sandy so we don’t know how it was eligible for Build it Back funding (let alone got Build It Back to start!). We called Build It Back and seemed to have them stumped. We’re waiting for an explanation.
THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2017 ***** We got a call from Geraldine Chapey telling us there’s a need for election inspectors for upcoming primary and Election Day. The pay is $200 for each day. You can call 718-634-9510 for more information. ***** There’s a lady, Katherine, who works for NYCFerry, doing a great job dealing with people on long (hopeless?) lines on weekends. She tells people if they’ll make it on the next one and/or if another one’s on the way. It makes a difference keeping people informed. This past Sunday we saw three boats usually used for fishing being used as extra ferry vessels. ***** South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside (and an option for many in Rockaway) has entered negotiations with Mount Sinai and will explore a formal affiliation agreement between the 455-bed Oceanside hospital and the world-renowned Mount Sinai Health System. ***** Some are saying the paddle
ballers on Shore Front may have a male model in their midst. GQ, the men’s fashion magazine, sent out a photographer to Rockaway Beach looking to find people with the “waviest style.” Not sure if we missed any other locals but we did spot Bill Swensen. You’re in GQ, Bill! That’s right up there with a mention in the High Tide column! ***** CityLimits.org reported that the City Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the administration’s proposed rezoning of downtown Far Rockaway. The City Council subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises, chaired by Councilman Donovan Richards, will host a hearing on the proposal on Thursday July 27, 9:30 a.m. at City Hall. ***** Get your buckets and shovels ready! The Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is Sunday, July 30 at noon on Beach 117th Street! There will be trophies for winners in three different age categories, from kids to adults, but we’re hoping for more incentives. If any local business or or-
Page 7 ganization wants to donate a gift certificate or gift basket, contact Katie@rockawaytimes.com. ***** Congrats to all who helped make the Thrilla In Camilla a great success. The FDNY Bravest Boxing core squared off against fighters from the West Midland Fire Service from Birmingham, England. The FDNY came on top 5-2. The event raises money to benefit veterans and the Building Homes For Heroes, a non-profit organization that builds or modifies homes, and gifts them mortgage-free to injured veterans and their families. Bobby McGuire deserves a lot of credit for the event. It was such a fun night we demand that it become a tradition! ***** Want to Avoid The Day? Well, there’s an escape available this Sunday from 12-6 p.m. The first pop-up book store will appear at NurtureUWellness (165 Beach 116th Street, 2nd Fl.). And there’ll be more than books. We hope plans for a permanent bookstore, bar, café and community space continue to move forward.

Dear Editor: Thank you to Janie Simmons for bringing awareness about the opioid epidemic to Broad Channel, Rockaway, Breezy Point and Roxbury. The epidemic is real and, whether you want to admit it or not, it is a lot closer then you think. For those of you who do not know what Naloxone is, it is a safe medication that reverses opioid overdose. Opioid overdose is preventable! If you or someone you know is using opioids it would be very wise to get in touch with Janie Simmons, simmons@ndri.org, and get some Naloxone, it's free and easy to use in an emergency. Gerry Magee
Slow Down! Dear Editor: There are many things I love about Rockaway, but two of them I really enjoy: bike riding and the boardwalk. An annoying problem has now presented its ugly head and someone is going to be seriously injured. Many of the riders using the
boardwalk think that they are competing in the Tour de France and are recklessly speeding with no regard for people entering the boardwalk, or other riders leisurely rolling along. I have personally been involved in two altercations on the same day with some of these asses for doing nothing more than staying in the lane and not speeding along to their liking. Also, what in the hell gives them the right to ride two, three or more abreast in the lane? The city has installed a bike lane parallel to the boardwalk on the street. If there are those who desire to break the land speed record on a bicycle they should use that lane. The boardwalk was not meant to be a racetrack. Where is Parks' enforcement? Seamus Lang
Please Dismount Dear Editor: On Saturday I was with my family on the boardwalk between Brothers and Caracas on B. 106. My three year old was hit by a cyclist who was riding his bike. My son wasn't hurt,

however he was clearly shook up and asked me why he was hit. The cyclist did get off his bike to see if he was okay but I noticed he was riding within the area that cyclists are supposed to get off their bikes. A lot of cyclists don't respect the signs that clearly say to dismount off your bike, which is placed by the bathrooms and businesses. A lot of people here have the same concerns and I'm afraid more people could get hurt. Jessica Quinones

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Thanks for Rockin’ Out for Autism Awareness! “I needed this amazing experience. Today I learned that no matter how hard the battle you are fighting, there is someone fighting a harder one with such a positive outlook. The people I had the honor of meeting today had such beautiful and positive spirits. From every person that was there — to every musician and vocalist that came out — I want to say thank you for such a memorable evening that I was
able to share with my family and friends. Thank you for showing me that we have to pull ourselves up from the bootstraps and keep on going. When we learn to love ourselves and love each other, this world will be such a beautiful place.” I welled up with bottomless emotion as I read the above Facebook post shared by Howard Beach resident, Bobby Sabatino, who with his family,

came out to Jammin’ Jon and the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families Group’s Rock Out for Autism concert at Rippers boardwalk concession on Sunday, July 9. What took a mere, but hectic three weeks to plan, was a personal coming out for me after years of isolation. Dear readers, writing this column was the genesis of my journey to finally share and accept my daughter’s autism. When Rockaway Times’ (RT) publisher, Kevin Boyle, gave me this platform, no one would believe the countless hours I spent wondering if I was sharing too much or too little. However each column was like a building block and now eight months later, here I was standing in front of a massive crowd with my daughter, Soanirina, declaring, “Autism awareness needs to happen in Rockaway now, and as a community we need to join forces to help our beautiful, sometimes misunderstood children right here on the peninsula.” I founded the Rockaway Beach “Artistic” Families Support (RBAFSG) to provide a safe meeting space for families and the general public to share their experiences with autism, and learn from each other and experts in the field on how to elevate our enchantingly “artistic” children. Yes, I consider our children, “artistic,” remodeling the bewildering, misunderstood label, “autistic.” At the concert, someone remarked, “It looks as though your daughter thinks this is a party for her.” And dear readers, yes indeed! RAA Presents Beach Film Festival This Weekend
The Rockaway Artists Alliance supports all platforms of creativity. This weekend, they’ll be showcasing fun family films As part of the RAA’s commitment to providing cultural events on the peninsula, the 2017 Rockaway Artists Alliance Film Festival is taking place on the beach in Riis Park this weekend. The event kicks off on Thursday, July 13, with a showing of the recent family-friendly animated film, Finding Dory, rated PG. On Saturday, July 15, an older family-friendly film, School of Rock, rated PG-13, will be shown. Both movies are
preceded by a DJ set and games starting at 7 p.m., and the movies start at 8 p.m. The movies will be shown on an inflatable screen on the beach by Bay 9, or Riis Park Beach Bazaar. People are welcome to bring chairs or towels. There will be food available to purchase at the Beach Café. Presented by the Bloomberg Philanthropies in collaboration with Central Park Conservancy, National Park Service, Jamaica Bay - Rockaway Parks Conservancy, with support from The Tides and In Good Company, this is a free event. All of the movies are open-captioned and the event is subject to cancellation due to weather. Last year’s Film Festival featured films better suited for adults, like West Side Story and Almost Famous, but with kids’ films being the main features this year, the event will be great for the whole family.
en access to primary care on the peninsula by the addition of two medical home sites on the hospital campus, one of which is co-located with outpatient behavioral health services, allow patients who come to the ED that do not need emergency services to be treated in an appropriate primary care setting, reduce potentially avoidable hospital use because of a lack of access to primary care services and poorly man-
aged chronic diseases, help St. John’s develop a stronger integrated delivery system that provides strengthened outpatient behavioral and mental health services to the community, and improve the crisis stabilization process and physical plan in the ED to better care for the behavioral health needs of the community”. These goals are conducive to the DSRIP goals set forth by the state department of health.

Rockaway’s only emergency room is getting some much-needed treatment. With the help of a $10.15M grant, the St. John’s Episcopal Hospital Emergency Department (ED) will be undergoing a big renovation and expansion. On Thursday, July 6, St. John’s staff and local elected officials gathered to announce the work that will be able to take place after the recent approval of a NYSDOH Capital Restructuring Financing Program (CRFP) Grant for $10.15M. The hospital staff, community members and elected officials have been working with the New York State Department of Health for more than a year, awaiting final approval of the contract to begin construction. Now with approval, the hospital will be
able to double its emergency apartment to 22,000 square feet, allowing for more space to provide care to patients in the emergency room. According to St. John’s CEO, Gerard Walsh, construction will last for approximately 24 months, which includes 12 months for the ED renovation/ expansion and 12 months for the primary care co-location facility, which will be housed at the current BOCES building. The new Emergency Department will provide adult and pediatric care, as well as psychiatric emergency care. By the end of construction, the department will include 19 private treatment rooms, 21 results waiting positions, six rapid evaluation beds, and 14 private areas in a separate psychiatric emergency department. Executive Vice President/ Chief Operation Officer Chris Parker said, “The primary strategic goals of the renovation and expansion are to strength-

Three Local Residents Celebrate 301 Years of Life! By Kami-Leigh Agard
Is it the food, great care or being located steps away from the everlasting Atlantic ocean that has local hospice/nursing home, Promenade Rehabilitation and Health Care Center (PRHCC) boasting 301 years of life for three of its residents? This past Monday, July 10, PRHCC hosted an epic birthday party with massive birthday cakes, ice-cream and live entertainment for its centenarian residents, Juan Morales, age 101, Catherine Poole and Julian Castillo, both age 100. When Morales was born in 1916, a loaf of bread was about seven cents, the cost of a stamp was two cents, only eight percent of homes had a telephone, and the Boston Red Sox won the World Series. Morales, a self-professed New York Mets fan would not see his beloved team officially debut until 1962. Poole, born in 1917, is still
quite a vivacious lady and known by PRHCC staff as “the talker.” From meeting her, you will note that she pulls no punches. Amazing, coming from a lady who was born when women were not yet granted the right to vote until four years later in 1920. Castillo, also born in 1917, is known for being an old school casanova, who loves to dance, but do not interrupt him while he is having his afternoon nap, as he will give you a powerful jab right in the kisser! According to Marie Simmonds, PRHCC’s director of recreation, this was the
first time in her 13-year tenure with the facility that they were commemorating three residents hitting the 100-year benchmark. “This is nothing short of amazing and inspiring,” Simmonds said. “We don’t see this often, and it’s all just a testimony of how invested our staff is to the allaround wellness and longevity of our residents. This is why we wanted to commemorate Catherine, Juan and Julian’s birth dates with a huge birthday bash. They are such an amazing, funny and vibrant trio that we knew that we had to go all out to celebrate their 100 years of life.” PRHCC’s dietician director, Indu Jaiswal, said, “I believe the key to a long, fulfilling life is watching what you put inside your body and keeping active. Due to their respective health concerns, each of these residents has certain dietary restrictions. However for example, Catherine has a sweet tooth and loves indulging in
cake and ice cream. Why not? Everything in moderation is fine, as long you keep mentally and physically active.” As for PRHCC registered nurse unit manager, Sandra Sampson, she is humbled with the reality that all three residents celebrating 100 years of life are in her care. “It’s hard to believe that all three are in my unit. I guess, I must be doing something right,” Sampson unabashedly quipped. As Rockaway’s centenarian residents, Morales, Poole and Castillo were serenaded by entertainer, Steve Canoni, and other residents and staff swayed to the infectious oldies music, Canoni declared, “Folks, we have 301 years of life experience in this room. What better occasion to dance and celebrate life!” For more information on PRHCC and volunteering opportunities, call 718-9454600 or email: promrehab@ aol.com

Life Rolls On for Disabled Surfers
By Lori Franco
The sky's the limit. On Saturday, July 8, Life Rolls On hit Beach 67th Street, giving peo-
ple with disabilities the chance to experience something they never thought they would be able to do — surf. The Rockaway Times spoke with some
who participated in the They Will Surf Again program, and many shared the feeling that nothing is impossible. Several dozen people with various disabilities came from near and far, especially from New Jersey, to give it their go at surfing in Rockaway. After taking on the waves, Rich Marte, said, “It was amazing, it was freedom… it's just indescribable.” At the end of the 30-minute session, he had to try surfing with assistance from volunteers, he was able to catch the waves by himself, which he mentioned was his favorite part. Not bad for a first-time surfer! With the experience came an important realization. “Limit is mental. You can do whatever you want, nothing is impossible,” Marte said. Participant Rob Yale, 47, used to surf a lot in his 20s but says, “I never thought I would do something like that again after I got hurt.” Yale
may have fallen off the board a few times, but he got right back on and said he had fun the whole time. One of the highlights for him was just being able to feel the ocean water with his hands as he was on the board. “If you aren't afraid of the water or taking chances, I recommend you to try it”, Yale said. Twenty-year-old Khalil Taliaferro, who is partially paralyzed, had a similar feelings. “To be honest, I didn't think I would ever do something like this. But I felt safe, Continued on page 15

Continued from Page 14 it opened new doors for me,” Taliaferro said, adding that it helped him get over his fear of water. His favorite moment of the experience was when he fell off the board and the volunteers told him to start paddling quickly. Before he knew it, the water pulled him back down, leaving him with a huge rush of adrenaline. Taliaferro went into detail about how he ended up in his situation. Three years ago in Central Jersey, he was shot in the neck, and from the neck down he was paralyzed. The doctors told him he would never be able to move again, but he didn't pay attention to what they said. Two and a half weeks later, he got feeling back in his upper body. Now, he has feeling in his legs and is working on building up muscle in his legs so that he can hopefully walk again with the help of therapy. He left off with this piece of advice: “You can do whatever you put your mind
THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2017 to as long as you don't listen to anybody's negativity,” much like the doctor who said he wouldn’t move. The event was made possible with the help of several volunteers including surfers, residents, visitors and local surf schools like Locals, Skudin and New York Surf School. Participants’ helpers were also on hand. One volunteer, Buffy, who was Marte and Taliaferro’s physical therapist, says she became a part of the event to “help her clients get involved and try something new.” She herself found the event to be enjoyable. “All the volunteers were engaged and everything was well organized. It was the most beautiful day and the water temperature was cool,” Buffy said. While the 82-degree day made for a great day in itself, what Buffy loved most was seeing her patients having a good time, catching the waves with a big smile on their face. Still in Pain? Real Stories Real Patients Real Results.
LiteCure Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Lillian Reynolds - The pain in the sole of my foot was so bad it felt like stepping on glass with every step I took. After just 3 session with the laser I was at least 50% better. It WORKS!! James Carman - I have had the pain in my right upper back and ribs for close to a year. I am getting better with every laser session. After 4 sessions I am 40% better and it no longer hurts to take a deep breath or when I cough. The spasms are less and my back is much looser than before. Kevin Flaherty - While training for the lronman Lake Placid, I developed problems with my hip flexor. The pain was so bad I had to stop running. This made it impossible to compete in the Ironman. I started therapy with Tim at Sands Point Physical Therapy. After 3 weeks (7 sessions) of Laser Therapy I am back to running 7 miles, 2 to 3 days a week I am back to training for the Ironman Lake Placid 2016. Thanks to Tim and Sands Point. Jose Barroso Torres - I had my hip
replaced July 2015. Although my hip was getting stronger the pain was almost unbearable. I had been using a walker to get around for the past 7 months. Tim suggested we try his new laser, the LiteForce EX. After just 3 treatments, I was at least 60% better; no more walker, just a cane and I don't even use the cane at home. I'm sleeping better, walking better and stairs are easier. I am so happy to endorse this treatment! ! !

Rockaway Business Alliance Wins Competitive City Grant Each year the Neighborhood Challenge Grant, a competitive grant administered by NYC Department of Small Business Services, gets dozens of business improvement districts and merchant organizations dreaming: “What could I do for my business district with $100,000?” This year’s Challenge Grant tasked business organizations to team up with technology companies and propose a technological solution to a commercial corridor challenge. About three months back, when the Rockaway Business Alliance (RBA) caught wind of this incredible opportunity, we put our heads together to address one of Rockaway's greatest challenges: connectivity. The first step in the grant process was to find a technology partner. “Admittedly a tech novice, this was a great learning opportunity for me,” says Theo Boguszewski of Perch Advisors, the consulting firm brought on to help manage the RBA. “We had many
intriguing conversations with technology representatives who are conceiving of tech solutions to community challenges. Even if we hadn’t won, I would still credit the Neighborhood Challenge Grant with the experience of getting to learn all about this cutting-edge technology and how it can be used to aid business communities.” With help from tech partners Connecthings and Combrr, the RBA crafted Rockaway ConneX, a two-pronged solution to one of the most pressing issues of the Rockaways, and a major issue of rapid urban growth: connecting people to places and things in a technology-driven environment. Connecthings is an international company that provides beacon technology, which relays tailored information – local events, transportation information, business promotions, interactive artwork, etc. – to passersby. This aids businesses in connecting to their customer base, and gives visitors and res-
idents alike access to the information they need in the moment when they need it. The Combrr app, conceptualized by locals, Justin Harter and Matt Blance-Stephany, offers beachgoers simplified delivery service using Combrr's own delivery runners and app interface, effectively connecting businesses on the peninsula to the beach. These two ideas together form an innovative solution connecting people, places and things. Rockaway ConneX seeks to challenge the norms of how people connect to public space in the Rockaways, propelling us towards a more digitally-engaged future. After submitting the initial proposal in mid-May, the RBA was selected to participate in a finalist round, which took place on June 15 at Grand Central Tech. Twelve business organizations presented three-minute (and not a second longer!) pitches, sharing their solution with a panel of judges, which includ-
ed city officials, along with reps from AOL and the Robin Hood Foundation. The next day, the phone call came in… we had been awarded the grant. RBA Board Chair Yarden Flatow said, “All of this cannot go without a tremendous thank you to those involved in the project proposal and pitch. Numerous people were involved in this effort, providing all sorts of valuable feedback, resources, and information.” The RBA is excited to be at the forefront of one of the fastest-growing communities in New York City. We hope that Rockaway ConneX will jumpstart Rockaway’s relationship with technology. We intend to continue improving upon RBA’s services and programming in order to help drive Rockaway’s revitalization, and build a resilient, eventful and prosperous way forward. Dear Enchantress...
Page 19
ADVICE TO SHED THE SUMMER SLUMP
Dear Enchantress... I don’t feel very enchanting or beautiful anymore. I use to enjoy summer. Now I just feel frumpy and I’m not that old. I’m 45, I constantly compare myself to other women and I never measure up. I feel like no man will ever want to date me. I try to have fun, but I always feel like it wouldn’t matter if I went out or not. There are days that it feels good to be by the ocean, but only when I’m alone and under a hat. I want to feel more confident and have fun like all other women. I have some friends, and they seem to always be having a good time. What can I do, how do I start to feel more beautiful? Thank you, Sad Clown at the Beach Dear Enchanted Sad Clown at the Beach, Sister! You are not alone, it
sounds like you’re in a summer slump, and the good news is: the quickest step to begin feeling and looking more beautiful is: fake it ‘til you make it! Set a time and date, and put “magical self-date” in your calendar. On your first date, set up your house as if you were having the most amazing person over, a real VIP, but really it’s you! Have your favorite foods set out on your good plates, put on your favorite music and light candles. On this magical self-date, you will beautify your closet! Go through your clothing, jewelry and accessories. Play dress up and get rid of, or donate, anything that does not feel good, key word is FEEL. Don’t worry if you look good; focus on how you feel in each item. Get rid of anything that feels “meh,” has stains or holes, or makes you feel frumpy. Then
prance and dance around your house in the clothes you feel good in, and have chosen to keep. These will be the clothes you wear to go out. On another magical selfdate, take a ritual bath. One of my favorite baths is called a Cleopatra’s bath. The recipe: a gallon of whole milk, a jar of honey and rose petals in your bath water. Treat yourself to this bath at least once a month. Start giving to yourself as if you already feel beautiful, and you will actually begin to feel beautiful! When you prioritize, and begin to honor yourself, you will see that others will honor you as well. After your bath, affirm out loud with enthusiasm: “I am marvelous and confident! I deserve joy!” You are a unique and beautiful human being. Even if you don’t believe it yet, stick to magical
dress-up sessions and your ritual baths. Being a true Enchantress means doing some awkward and weird practices, working on your inner life will make you shine! You so got this! Enchantress Shane coaches and guides women wanting more magic and confidence in their lives. To ask Enchantress Shane a question, email her at Love@enchantedembodiment. com. SHINGLES
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Herpes zoster (shingles) is a nerve and skin infection that occurs as a result of reactivation of latent varicella zoster virus (VZV). Approximately one million cases of shingles are diagnosed each year in the U.S. People with a history of a primary varicella infection (chickenpox) have a 10 to 20 percent lifetime chance of developing shingles. Shingles is more common in older adults as immunity to VZV declines over time, however shingles in younger persons does occur. Usually the likelihood of developing shingles begins to rise between 50 and 60 years of age. Also a family histo-
The Rockaway Times
ry of shingles is a risk factor. Other groups of people are at increased risk of shingles. Those groups include organ transplant recipients, people with compromised immune systems, and those with cancer or HIV/AIDS. Sometimes shingles in a younger person may be the first sign of an HIV infection. Shingles typically appears on the upper abdomen, mid to upper back, torso, or head, which are the same areas where the rash from chickenpox occurs. Shingles involving the eye can be particularly troublesome, and if untreated, may lead to blindness. Shingles begins first with pain in the
affected area. Because the red, blistery rash of shingles appears about three to four days after the onset of pain, a person with shingles may not realize that the pain is from shingles until the rash appears. Typically the rash appears on one side of the body and does not cross the midline. Because the VZV infects a spinal nerve causing an inflammation of the nerve, or neuritis, the pain can be excruciating and debilitating. A small percentage of shingles sufferers may go on to develop postherpetic neuralgia where the pain may last for many months or longer. The reason that the VZV reactivates in the body is unknown. Many shingles sufferers do not recall having had chickenpox. The reason for that is that the VZV is extremely common. Nine-
ty-five percent of the world’s population has been infected with VZV and about 80 percent of those born in the pre-varicella vaccine era have evidence of VZV immunity even in the absence of clinical chickenpox. Antiviral treatment with famcyclovir, valcyclovir, or acyclovir should be started as soon as possible after the appearance of the rash. Antivirals are most effective if started within 72 hours of the appearance of the rash but may be started at any time during the infection. Steroids may produce a modest effect on pain relief and healing time, but do not affect the risk of developing postherpetic neuralgia. Some medications used to treat chronic nerve pain, like gabapentin and Lyrica, may help with pain relief in shingles.
A live attenuated vaccine called Zostavax is available for adults over 60 for primary prevention against shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia. Unfortunately the vaccine is quite expensive and not all insurance plans cover it. Merck, the manufacturer of the vaccine, recommends that all persons who have had shingles should get the vaccine, but a person with a normal immune system who gets shingles will develop the immunity on their own, although it probably wouldn’t hurt to get the vaccine after a bout of shingles. At any rate, the chance of someone with a normal immune system getting a recurrent shingles infection is less than five percent. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

Readers from Brooklyn might recognize this skinny guy visiting Notre Dame. Brother Robert Falcone (from St. Thomas Aquinas – Flatbush and Holy Cross High School in Flushing) made sure he brought a green Rockaway Times t-shirt to the campus of the Fighting Irish. No dot for him. (Dot’s an inside joke to all students who prepared for high school exams under his tutelage).

DE BLASIO'S HEART IS TRULY PAST SHAME Police Officer Miosotis Famila was assassinated as she sat in her police vehicle in the Bronx during the early morning hours of July 5. Familia, a mother of three, was the first female New York Police Department officer killed in the line of duty since the September 11 attacks and only the third female officer killed in a combat-type encounter in the department’s history. As the citizens of New York were reeling from the execution-style killing of yet another one of their police officers, our Mayor quietly skipped town, only a few hours after a quick press release announcing a planned trip to Germany later that evening to protest along with other progressive activists at the "Hamburg Shows Attitude" rally against the recent G-20 summit in that city. Organizers of the “Hamburg Shows Attitude” protest said the New York mayor was invited to be the keynote speaker because of his political views that contradict Trump’s nationalist policies. Mayor de Blasio himself stated that Americans’ views don’t align with President Trump’s and need to be represented abroad. By the way, de Blasio's progressive anti-globalization activist friends laid waste to portions of Hamburg over a period of three nights of rioting. While police continued to mourn the loss of one of their own, de Blasio's trip to the "Hamburg Shows Attitude" protest meant he skipped the vigil being held for Officer Familia in the Bronx as well as an NYPD swearing-in ceremony made somber by the assassination of NYPD Officer Miosotis Familia. De Blasio returned to New York on Sunday and stated he would be attending Officer Familia's funeral this past Tuesday. Hizzoner’s
overseas jaunt was paid for by the rally’s organizers - as was the tab for three City Hall staffers with him. The mayor also made sure the free trip included a visit with his son, Dante, a student at Yale University spending the summer on an internship in Berlin. The police, as well as many members of the public, widely believe that de Blasio's apparent antipathy for police started festering back when, after the controversial grand jury rulings in the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases back in 2014, our Mayor let it be known that he had to “train” his biracial son about the “dangers” he faced on a dayto-day basis by New York City cops. Additionally, de Blasio, unlike his Police Commissioner or Governor Cuomo, recently saw nothing wrong with participating in the 2017 Puerto Rican Day Parade along with convicted FALN terrorist Oscar Lopez Rivera who shared a parade float with Melissa Mark Viverito, our uber liberal progressive City Council President. I sincerely hope the Mayor enjoyed his visit with his son in Berlin, but I urge him to never forget that his foray into riotous global liberal progressive protest in Germany came at the expense of Police Officer Familia who will not be visiting with any of her three children ever again! Bill de Blasio's continuing lack of common sense and ensuing insensitivity to those he (supposedly) serves is being exacerbated by his vision of himself. He is a rising leader of the progressive left whose agendas and priorities are far from those of regular New Yorkers. Our un-civil servant Mayor is quite comfortable in his own skin believing that his priorities are more valuable than ours, all of which causes me to worry that our city is past hope because it is quite obvious that our Mayor's heart is truly past shame! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Alphabet is the parent company of Google and all powerful, but even though Google is everywhere, that is not what I am talking about here. I am talking about the actual alphabet, you know, A, B, C, D, etc., etc., etc. We learn the alphabet at the earliest age, and it’s re-enforced in grammar school by a very powerful reminder. It’s the seating order that we all were put in regardless of the school we went to. Our last names were alphabetized and we sat in alphabetical order. And for most of our grammar school years, we sat behind the letter before us and in front of the letter after us. For me, Pastina was squeezed in between O and Q. I say that the alphabet is powerful, because this seating order, lasting in some cases for eight years, helped form the earliest friendships that we know. I know that sometimes, the kids sitting next to you could also be your tormentors, too. But I believe for the most part, we have fond memories of those years, and if you put your mind to it, you can remember who sat in front and behind you in grammar school. In my case, my two buddies (O & Q) and I wound up on the same basketball and football teams together for several years. One of the two effectively ended my career as pitcher in the Little League, when at the ripe age of about eight; I took a ground ball to the nose. But I took some pleasure in the fact that although he had bloodied my nose, he couldn’t make a left-handed lay-up to save his life!
The Rockaway Times To this day I consider both to be good friends, although I don’t see them much anymore because we live in different places. But when we do see each other, it’s always special. Do I remember others from those days, sure I do, but for some reason I remember these two, probably because they sat around me. I was also friends with a fellow whose name began with an A. He played basketball also and was very good. We had some disagreement one day and he bloodied my nose too. Now that I think about it, this seemed to be a recurring thing in my past! I don’t see Mr. A anymore either, but we were always friends and to this day my Dad sees him at Mass, and he always says hello. I was also friends with an R guy. He was a bit hyperactive as a first grader; perhaps today he would have been diagnosed with some form of hyperactivity. Anyone who was in that class that year will remember the first grade teacher literally chaining this kid to the desk. Not making that up. He went on to become a doctor. So it was in this way that we all began to put the building blocks of language together, first with the letters of the alphabet, then with small words, sentences, and paragraphs, followed finally by stories. And looking back, you begin to realize that they form the story of your life, and surprisingly started with the first letter of your last name. Recently, I saw Mr. O, we were in each other’s wedding parties, our families have known each other for at least three generations, maybe more, and he told me he had joined the ranks of the retired like myself. And I realized we had come full circle. As he was leaving, he hugged me and said, “I love you, man.” This coming from the guy who introduced me to the Grateful Dead four decades ago, and after being friends for over 50 years, I came to understand that the Dead were right, “love is love, and not fade away.” And it all started with the alphabet, the circle is truly unbroken and very powerful.

Facts You Probably Don’t Need Students in China can get up to 7 years in jail for cheating on exams. There is a company that will turn your ashes into fireworks after you die, should you want to go out with a bang. Slovakia and Slovenia get mistaken for each other so often that once a month the countries exchange letters mistakenly sent to them. At one point, Coca-Cola tested vending machines that changed prices depending on the weather. The hotter it was, the pricier the drink. Africam.com is a website that allows you to watch live streams of wild animals in Southern Africa 24/7. Facebook, Twitter, Skype,
and YouTube are all illegal in China. The official term for the piece of paper that sticks out of a Hershey's Kiss is "Nigglywiggly." If you take your age and multiply it by 7, and then multiply that number by 1443, the answer will repeat your age 3 times. The Germans have a word for someone who badly needs a punch in the face: " Backpfeifengesicht." Disney's biggest villain? Arguably, it's Mulan! She has the highest body count of any Disney character and was the first Disney princess to kill people on screen. Facts from Sean McVeigh, Factologist.

Downtown Far Rock Proposal Approved by City Planning The Downtown Far Rockaway revitalization project is one step closer to going full-steam ahead. According to CityLimits.org, on Monday, July 10, the City Planning Commission (CPC) voted unanimously to approve the proposed rezoning of downtown Far Rockaway, with no changes. The proposal by the New York City Department of Economic Development will increase housing and commercial development in the center of Downtown Far Rockaway, with the use of $91 million in city investments dedicated to the project. Most of this revitalization would take place around Mott and Central Avenues and Beach 20th Street. “Today’s vote marks another major step towards bringing transformative investment to Downtown Far Rockaway. We were grateful to receive the support of the City Planning
Commission and look forward to continuing to work with Council Member Richards and other community leaders as we move forward with this historic effort to revitalize Downtown Far Rockaway,” said Anthony Hogrebe, NYCEDC Senior Vice President of Public Affairs. On Thursday, July 27, at 9:30 a.m., the City Council subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises, which is chaired by Councilman Donovan Richards, a longtime advocate of the project, will host a hearing on the proposal at City Hall. The proposal will go to the full City Council at a later date. The City Council needs to approve the proposal before any action can take place. For more information on the Downtown Far Rockaway project, head to www.nycedc.com/ project/downtown-far-rockaway.

Declaring Independence Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato attended the sixth annual reading of the Declaration of Independence on Tuesday, July 4 in Breezy Point. The reading had more than 100 attendees, and was a combined effort of Bob and Lorraine Pierson, who have put on the event for the past six years, Mary Henley, who read the List of Abuses and Usurpations that forms the Preamble to the Declaration, and VFW Post 8540 Commander Kevin McCann. The Piersons announced their intention to find someone else to host next year’s reading for the first time in its history. “This was how America started – the Declaration, said Pheffer Amato. “The document was literally revolutionary at the time, and continues to inspire those who work for and love freedom throughout the world. A sudden downpour of rain did not stop the Broad Channel Athletic Club’s (BCAC) Tykes Basketball Division’s Team Scala and Team Ulrich from swooping and hooping on the court with their parents hooting support for a win. With Team Scala wearing blue t-shirts and Team Ulrich sporting pink shirts covering their knees, going head-tohead in the game, one had to wonder if this lineup would be reflective of District 32’s election matchup this coming November. Democrat Michael Scala, an attorney and first vice president of the Queens Public Transit Committee advocacy group, is vying to unseat Republican Eric Ulrich’s District 32 City Council seat. The 32nd District covers the neighborhoods of Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Neponsit, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Rockaway Park, Roxbury, South Ozone Park, West Hamilton Beach and Woodhaven. However, as part of BCAC’s Shamrock Summer Shootout, these four- and five-year-old upstarts were just dancin’ and prancin’ across the court to get a ball in the basket for a win. As one dad commented, “I don’t care who wins, I just
want my kids to have fun!” As the rains suddenly bathed all the players and families in attendance, no one budged. All spectators were glued on these little tykes determined to get a ball in the basket. One mom with her twins in tow said, “The rain is good. It’s a blessing for our players from up above.” Scala, standing in the rain, jokingly quipped, "Whoever wins this game takes the election in November.” Well if this game is any indication of the steadfast determination and dedication of these little tykes, District 32’s election will be quite a show. In the end, neither side could claim victory as no one kept score. However, Scala noted the fierce determination and spirit of the children in both teams. "It's all in good fun," Scala said. "They're getting better at the game." After the exciting, raindrenched basketball game, Scala treated the entire league to Italian ices.

JOY IN GROWING I get a deep sense of pleasure from watching vegetables grow. Well, I don’t actually watch them but witness the changes in height, fullness and strength. Summer is an abundant time in my backyard. Even though I don’t have a lot of time to tend, everything seems to flourish, weeds included. Every spring, I have a new “landscape” and I look forward to tenderly transporting seedlings into the ground and then joy in the growth. Of course I enjoy the fruits
of the plants – but the joy for me is really the growing process. Life lessons present themselves when observing the garden. Two seedlings of the same variety of tomato from the same farm yield dramatically different results. One may be very tall, the other short. Every plant has its own DNA. Imagine that every plant on the planet has its own DNA. Every single living thing is unique in its makeup, affecting the form, shape and appearance. This
diversity is what makes life on earth so wondrous. Acknowledging the uniqueness in every other person then, is a nod to the essence of the spirit that is common in each living thing. What we sometimes call “the divine within” when we speak about humans, meaning the thread that connects everything living. We have a physical growth – growing up to adult stage – and an inner growth, which, with awareness and cultivation, can be fruitful until we leave this life. There is always room to grow. In our personal journeys, there is always space to learn, to understand something and to grow from it. Witness the plant that has a small footprint in the soil, yet, springs up and out to grow, finding any which way to bear fruit. Sometimes we can get stuck in adulthood, in the familiar, in who we have become. We can become preoccupied with work, child-rearing, family care, and not be open to growing and learning.
Page 37 Everyone always talks about time and the lack of it. “If I had time, I would . . .” Opening to growing has nothing to do with having time. It has to do with being aware, thinking about something deeply that is part of your life, understanding it, letting go of it perhaps or enhancing it to make it fuller. Any one experience gives us the possibility of growth in some way, whether the experience is a negative or a positive one. Sometimes I find it hard to figure out the lesson or what it is to learn or how I can grow, but the answers do come. The answers come as long as I have the intention to figure it out. To think and feel deeper than on the surface. By doing so we become fuller and stronger. Truly imagine a life of continuously growing and evolving and it will be yours. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Give New Life to a Concrete Patio By Artie Wallace
When most people think of staining, they think of wood. Surprisingly there are a lot more things that can be stained than you think. This week we're going to look at staining your concrete patio (or driveway). Over the years, driveways and patios get a lot of abuse from the weather (and many other things), and as a result there are stains that just won’t come out no matter what. Or maybe it’s just time to give your patio a new look. There are many companies that make concrete stains, personally I’ve always used Rust-Oleum. As far as the best, everyone has their opinion, so research the brand you plan to buy. Here are the steps to staining your concrete patio. 1- Using a high-pressure power washer and concrete cleaner, give your patio a good cleaning. 2- Using a stiff push broom,
brush down your patio while hosing away any debris/dirt. 3- Using an industrial degreaser or acid cleaner and a brush, scrub your patio and allow to dry for 48 hours. Be sure to follow the instructions on the cleaner, including safety instructions. 4- Sweep your patio, then apply your concrete stain using a brush. For multiple colors or coats, allow 48 hours to dry between (even though manufacturers time may be less). In addition: When you’re staining your patio, it opens the door to a lot of new designs. After applying the base color, you can use stencils to add a design, you can add a border, you can even add a shuffleboard court. The possibilities are endless. Just make sure that you sketch out your design and take your time staining in your pattern/ design/game. To send me your ideas for future articles, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com.

THRILLA IN CAMILLA – A HIT! be heard blocks away. Both fighters showed unexpected skill and impressive grit. It was an even fight with Frontera getting his hand raised in a split-decision victory. The Thrilla In Camilla got a lot of volunteer help from off duty and retired firefighters and other locals. Their help went a long way in making the evening an unqualified success. The event raises money to benefit veterans and the Building Homes For He-
roes, a non-profit that supports men and women injured in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The organization builds or modifies homes, and gifts them, mortgage-free to veterans and their families. Friday’s event particularly benefitted Army Specialist Hugo Gonzalez, who attended the event and pulled the lucky winning ticket for the 50/50 raffle, which reached more than $6,000. It was a great night for champions by champions!
Firefighters from Engine 254 / Ladder 153 made sure their man McVeigh was head and shoulders above the crowd.
More than 1,500 people turned out for the Thrilla In Camilla, a fundraising event with a night of boxing on Friday, July 1. The FDNY Bravest Boxing team faced off against fighters from the West Midland Fire Service from Birmingham, England. The FDNY came on top, seven matches to three. The FDNY winners in-
cluded Josiah Rivera, Andrew Tanzi, Steve Ramhold, Danny Quinn, Hildy Santana, Jonathan Velasquez and Dave Leonard. And while the matches were well fought and entertaining affairs, the “Grudge Match” between two locals, Tom McVeigh and Jimmy Frontera, fired up the crowd and the cheering and rooting could

Sunday wrapped up Week 5 and we are at the half way point of the season. We had close games and a couple not-so-close. The Kings swept the Chuggernauts, winning by the mercy rule in both games. Mudsharks won two important games against the NoShows 21-5 and 11-3. In an East Division matchup, the Misfits swept the last place Orioles 9-6 and 5-3, and find themselves in 1st place after the two wins. The only split of the day was Morning Wood and Member Berries as MW won Game 1, 6-1, then the Berries broke their losing streak scoring four runs in the 7th winning 6-3. The Moneyballs stayed undefeated as they swept The Army 9-2 and 12-4. With the two losses, The Army dropped in the standings as the Knights of Columbus jumped up a spot after they won both games against Old Head. Only four more weeks left until the playoffs. Here’s what we have in store for Sunday, July 16. 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Orioles vs
Mudsharks - The wait is over. A big bet is on the line and 20-plus years of Mudshark dominance. The loser will have an official at bat for the opposing team next season. We kinda have an idea of who that will be. PREDICTION: Mudsharks Sweep. 9:30 a.m. Field 2, Old Head vs Member Berries - Both teams are on the verge of missing the playoffs. For Old Head, it would be their first season not making the postseason. Member Berries have to win to keep pace in the West to have any chance of making it. PREDICTION: Split. 9:30 a.m. Field 3, Moneyballs vs Chuggernauts - 1st place vs last place. Moneyballs are cruising through everybody and it doesn't look like the Chuggernauts are gonna slow them down. It should be batting practice for the Moneyballs as they get ready for their big matchup next week. PREDICTION: Moneyballs Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 1, The Army vs No-Shows

- The Army has to rally up the troops after getting swept the past two weeks. No-Shows dropped down to 5th in the West and need to win to make a push for the top three spots. The Army dropped as well and is on the outside looking in and will stay there if they don’t win. PREDICTION: Split. 11:30 a.m. Field 2, Knights of Columbus vs Kings - Two of the hottest teams face off as both teams are combined to win 11 straight games. The Knights are in midseason form and the Kings are sitting in 2nd place looking to stay there. These should be two very good games. PREDICTION: Split. 11:30 a.m. Field 3, Morning Wood vs Misfits ***GAME OF THE WEEK*** - A big East Division matchup as 1st place is on the line. Morning Woods’ bats were dead last week and they need to wake up or else they will drop further in the standings. Misfits looking to stay hot and finish in 1st for the
first time in their team history. STANDINGS East 1. Misfits 6-2 2. Morning Wood 7-3 3. Knights of Columbus 6-4 4. The Army 3-4-1 5. Old Head 1-7 6. Orioles 1-9 West 1. Moneyballs 10-0 2. Kings 7-1 3. Mudsharks 6-4 4. Member Berries 3-6-1 5. No-Shows 3-7 6. Chuggernauts 2-8 The league is running a 50/50 raffle for $5 a chance. Proceeds will be donated to the Broad Channel Athletic Club Mardi Gras Fund. If you are interested in a ticket, please see any team or e-Mail JBSLCommish@ gmail.com. Winner will be drawn at our All-Star Game on August 5.
