Motor Mayhem Leads to Assault By Katie McFadden
For the past two weekends, large groups of people on ATVs and dirt bikes have been pouring into the peninsula, roaming across the bridges, through the streets and even on to the boardwalk. It’s been a growing problem citywide for the past few years, so much so that last month, Mayor Eric Adams announced a crackdown on these illegal vehicles at a press conference showing several of the confiscated dirt bikes and ATVs being destroyed by a bulldozer. Since then, a large group has chosen the Rockaway peninsula as their playground, but it's gone beyond a fun joyride. During the group’s latest trip through the peninsula, a local man was assaulted in his car, allegedly by a group of the bikers. On Sunday evening, July 3, the large group of at least 200 people on ATVs and dirt bikes, grabbed attention as they rode through the streets and on to the boardwalk,
Jesse Murphy, the day after his assault. through the busy concession areas of Rockaway Beach. So when another group came off the Marine Parkway Bridge at around 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, and started rolling up Beach Channel Drive,
neighbors were on high alert. The group drove up Beach Channel Drive, to Shore Front Parkway via Beach 105th Street, but they didn’t hit the boardwalk this time. Instead, they went back down Beach 92nd Street, past the 100th Precinct, and over the Cross Bay Bridge into Broad Channel and Howard Beach, disrupting drivers and pedestrians as they went. Some witnesses say they were being followed by NYPD, which allegedly redirected them away from the boardwalk. Videos and witness reports show the bikers popping wheelies and traveling at high speeds, running through red lights as they went along. For most, it was a minor inconvenience. For one local man, it led to the next few days being spent at doctors’ offices. Jesse Murphy, a local resident, former NYPD officer, former FDNY firefighter and now a social worker, was on his way home from a day spent in Manhattan, volun-
teering with disabled veterans on Sunday, when he got off the ferry, got to his car and realized he needed eggs. He went to the Rockaway Park Stop and Shop and as he came out, he first saw the group of riders on BCD. “There were so many of them, that I slowed my walk to my car. I sat in my car and dropped all my windows because it was hot. As the group started to slow down, I made my way to the exit. After a long day, I was mentally drained. I just wanted to go home. The light turned green after I sat through the third light cycle waiting for this group to pass, and there was a lull in the group, so I pushed my way out into the street and I made it underneath the traffic light when I guess eight to 10 of the bikers stopped in front of my car and locked me in. A Hispanic woman, probably in her 30s said, ‘Motherf***er, now you’re not going nowhere.’ All I hear is ‘white Continued on page 9

LOCAL MAN ASSAULTED Continued from Page 7 mother***er’ and the bikes are revving and I’m right in the middle. I forgot the window was down. I’m trying to get to my phone and I’m really nervous and one guy gets off his bike and spits at me. It took me a second to process what happened. I realized I couldn’t move forward, or I’d hit them, I can’t move back. All I could think was to call the cops and next thing I know I felt like a Mack truck hit me. I look down at the phone and it’s covered in blood. At that point, I was bleeding everywhere, and I think that scared them off from attacking me further, so they moved on,” Murphy recalled. “I think someone had come up from behind and came in with their elbow to my face.” Still in shock, Murphy says he pulled over and called 911. While on the phone with them, he realized his nose had shifted while blood poured from his nose and from a gash underneath his left
eye. Murphy decided to reset his own nose back into place. “I think I set it ok,” he said. Exhausted from the ordeal after a long day, Murphy requested police to meet him at his home to file a report. Murphy says they arrived 90 minutes later. Murphy says the slow response to such incidents comes from the top. “The Mayor’s office is not supporting the police. The city is sending a message to us that our safety is not a priority. That it’s okay to have mayhem in the streets. As a social worker, I see why there’s so much wrong with this when you have these people that have this void in their life and choose to get involved in these bike gangs and find family in them and cause harm to other people, but it’s not fair to have bedlam in our society. It’s traumatizing, not only to me, but to those kids that are in that group mentality of being allowed to do this. They’re being taught a lesson that they cannot pay attention to the law and get away with it. It’s not okay,” Murphy said. The Rockaway Times reached out to DCPI, the NYPD’s press of-

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed that police received a call regarding the assault at 7:10 p.m. and responded on Sunday. “There are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing,” the spokesper-

Any local businesses near the Stop and Shop lot that may have camera footage are also asked to help police with their investigation by providing footage. The Detective Squad can be reached at: (718) 318-4223. Murphy isn’t the first person to be injured by a group of ATV and dirt bike riders. In 2018, a 65-yearold man was killed when he was hit by a rider on an ATV among a big group in Ridgewood, Queens. Last summer, a man riding a dirt bike was arrested after critically injuring a four-year-old boy who was playing in the parking lot of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. In response to Rockaway’s latest rideout, the NYPD spokesperson said, “The Commanding Officer of the 100th Precinct is aware of the condition and the concerns of community members regarding individuals who ride vehicles in either large groups or in a reckless manner. We strongly encourage resi-

requires that a vehicle pursuit be terminated whenever the risks to uniformed members of the service and the public outweigh the danger to the community, if the suspect is not immediately apprehended. If the chase is terminated, members will attempt to obtain a sufficient amount information to effect apprehension at a later time.” The NYPD reminds people that ATVs and dirt bikes are illegal on all city streets and sidewalks. If anyone has information on where these vehicles are stored, reach out to the NYPD at: 800-577-TIPS. Following Sunday’s rideout, Councilwoman Joann Ariola said, “The band of ATVs and motorcycles terrorizing our community will not be tolerated. I will be working with our local precincts, our Police Commissioner and Mayor to make sure that these rioters causing mayhem are taken into custody and their bikes and ATVs are confiscated and destroyed!” On Tuesday night, after suffering from a concussion, a dislocated nose, a gash to the face and a
The Rockaway Times major black eye, and seeing several doctors to treat his injuries, Murphy was back to working out at a local outdoor park, with his facial injuries from Sunday’s attack still visible. “I’m grateful I’m not dead. But I’m not going to let them take this away from me. We should be able to go into our neighborhoods and not feel terrorized in our parks and open spaces,” he said. But he did offer some advice. “Let these people pass, don’t try to confront them. It was 10% my fault, but 125% their fault. I was tired and I wanted to go home. Now I’m just grateful I’m still here. I just hope something is done before someone else gets hurt.” Wanting to turn his experience into a positive, Murphy suggests supporting organizations that support first responders. One such organization he mentioned is Friends of Firefighters, Inc. (www. friendsoffirefighters.org). An organization that supports the NYPD is the New York City Police Foundation (www.nycpolicefoundation.org/).

A Tournament for Timmy Beach volleyball, a tribute to a fallen hero and a chance to gather with friends and neighbors to enjoy a beautiful day. It all went down last Saturday, July 9 on Beach 120th Street for the first annual Timmy Klein Volleyball Tournament. The crowds spread throughout Rockaway Park for a day of beach volleyball, a sport that late firefighter Timmy Klein loved. As soon as word spread about the tournament in memory of Timmy, spots filled almost immediately. After all, it was all for a good cause, to raise money in memory of Klein, a Rockaway firefighter who died on the job in Brooklyn earlier this year. The day was full of music, raffles, and some fierce, fun competition on the sand. The FDNY fireboat even made an appearance to put on a spectacular water show as the teams played and a banner plane flew up ahead with a special message for Timmy, “Free and Easy. Timmy, We Miss You.” This event would not have been a success without the organizers, Timmy’s friends and cousins, and many volunteers. After the event, the organizers shared on Instagram, “Yesterday was an amazing day. Thank you to everyone who played,

donated and joined us in honoring our hero, Timmy. It was a day many will never forget and that is because of all your overwhelming support! All the money raised will be donated to the FF Timothy Klein Foundation which will go back to those in need just as Tim would have wanted. Thank you all so much!” They’re already planning next year’s competition. When Rockaway says they’ll never forget, they mean it. Saturday’s turnout showed Timmy Klein will never be forgotten. TEMPLE BETH-EL CONTINUES GUEST SPEAKERS PROGRAM The second in a series of guest speakers at Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park will take place on Saturday, July 30, when their speakers will be Rabbi Rebecca Epstein, Spiritual Leader of West End Temple and Assemblywoman Stacey Pfeffer Amato who will discuss "Leadership in Government and Community - A Jewish Perspective.” Both guests will be speaking at lunch following Saturday morning services. Those wishing to attend must call the Temple office at 718-634-8100 by Wednesday, July 27. The first program in this series was held on Saturday, June 25 when guest speakers were Officer Lauren Haber of the 100th Precinct who oversees Anti-Semitism and Hate Crimes in our neighborhood. Officer Haber advised that as far as Anti-Semitism in our neighborhood, goes we
have been very fortunate that we have not had problems for several years. Assistant D.A. Michael Brovner of the Queens County District Attorney's Office, who currently serves as Chief of the Hate Crimes Bureau was the other guest at that lunch. D.A. Bovner explained how there is a difference between what we read and what can legally be prosecuted as a hate crime or anti-semitism and that can create a problem in the minds of the public. D.A.Bovner has prosecuted many of these cases.

To the Rockaway, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Long Beach, and FDNY Communities: Our goal when planning the First Annual Timmy Klein Volleyball Tournament was to have a day that honored Tim in the best way possible. Our focus automatically became making sure everyone could have fun doing one of the things he loved most; playing volleyball on the beach with friends and family. In true Timmy Klein fashion, he gave us a day that could not have been more perfect. This past Saturday exceeded any expectations we had by far. It was an absolutely amazing, happy day and that is in large part because of the overwhelming support, love, and generosity of these communities. We are amazed and humbled by the goodness we are surrounded by. To our amazing volunteers, participants, attendees, and the many families and businesses all of whom generously donated, you are the main reason we were able to make this first event such a wonderful success. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for giving us a day that will never be forgotten. 100% of the unbelievable amount of funds raised in honor of Timmy, will be going directly to the FF Timothy Klein Foundation. The goal in establishing his Foundation is to continue to honor his life and give back whenever possible just as Timmy did and would want us to do. We will never stop missing our beloved Timmy, and it is our privilege to make this event an annual one so we can celebrate "TK" for years to come. God Bless You All, The TK Volleyball Committee

Roller Wave Skate Party Returns Saturday By Katie McFadden
Roller skating is making a comeback. That will be clear this Saturday, July 16, when the Beach 108th hockey rink will be transformed into a roller skating party arena. LUXE MJ and the Far Rockaway Greek Council have teamed up with Roller Wave to bring Forever Young 2, a ‘90’s themed skate party back to Rockaway for a second summer. On Saturday, July 16 from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., head to the Beach 108th Hockey Rink to enjoy the fun. DJs will be blasting ‘90s tunes, some folks may even dress for the occasion, and everyone will be wearing roller skates as they set their minds to good times. For its second summer, Roller Wave is back in the Rock with their popular pop-up roller disco. Roller Wave first found its way to Rockaway last summer. Harry Martin, Roller Wave’s founder, turned to skating as an outlet to escape anxiety and depression. When he realized it worked for him, he wanted to share it with other people. “As I was dealing with those issues and found this to be a light in my tunnel, I wanted that to resonate with others. We can escape mental health issues through physical activity and what better activity than roller skating to music?” he said. After going to his first skating event in 2015, Martin decided to spread the love and start his own. He launched Roller Wave in October 2016. Since then, Martin’s skate parties have grown a following of more than 30,000 people and he’s held events from all over New York to Connecticut, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Washington, D.C. And wherever there’s a Roller Wave party, the skaters will follow. Mon’t Schultz, founder of LUXE MJ, a lifestyle brand that promotes cannabis and marijuana justice, met Martin after turning to skating for her own release during the Covid pandemic. “At the time, everyone was six feet apart and nobody was seeing each other so I picked up my skates more. I found
Harry and went to one of his events in Queens, and while it was difficult to skate with a mask on, it was worth it. It was so energizing, so vibrant, so much fun and it felt like the community had been missing something like this for so long. I said I absolutely have to bring this back to the Rockaways one way or another,” Schultz said. As part of her mission, Schultz aims to use her brand to help give back to the community with positive events. A roller-skating party by the beach seemed like a perfect fit. So she reached out to Curtis Turney-Rentas of the Far Rockaway Greek Council to team up and bring Roller Wave to Rockaway last summer. The first party was a hit. “It was great,” Martin said. “A lot of peo-
ple came out in swim trunks and bikinis, and we created a vibe like they have in Venice Beach. We brought a Venice Beach vibe to New York with our own twist on it.” Schultz added, “It was amazing. We had over 400 people in a crowd that ebbed and flowed through the day. We had young people, older people, all different races, sexualities, classes. We had ice cream trucks and politicians come out to greet people. It was a great time.” Now they’re hoping to make it an even better time. “We’re looking forward to having more people out there,” Schultz said. Skip Race, DJ Tahleim, NYJAE, Skaterobics and DJ Petervibes will have the music going and folks can stop by at any time throughout
the event to put on some skates or just watch the fun. Some Roller Wave regulars will be out on the rink, but the organizers are hoping locals and visitors will come try it out. The event is open to all ages and skaters of all experiences, even beginners. As part of Roller Wave’s mission, they will have people on hand to teach people how to skate or even how to pull off a couple dance moves on skates if they’re comfortable. Those with their own skates can bring them, but Martin will also have skates available to rent for those who don’t have their own. “I want to encourage more people to learn how to roller skate so anybody can come out and we’ll have instructors if people want to learn,” Martin said. Martin hopes skating can transform other people’s lives as it did for him. “I believe skating is another form of meditation and the joy you get from roller skating is another form of escapism. When you skate, you feel free, you feel like you’re flying. I think that’s why it attracts a lot of people, and you get to find a community within these skaters and these events,” Martin said. For Schultz, supporting the community is what it’s all about. “We hope to see a lot of folks. We hope they enjoy it. This isn’t one of those events where you have to be a professional skater. You can fall, you can laugh, you can meet people with kindred spirits and build a community from that point forward,” she said. “I can’t wait,” Martin added. “We’re going to have close to 90-degree weather this week. It’s going to be a beautiful day of skating to music out here. It’s going to be a great time.” Saturday’s Roller Wave Forever Young 2 skate party is free and open to all ages. Donations are welcome. Skate rentals are $20 for those who don’t have their own. For more info, check out www.RollerWave.com or follow @luxemj and @farrockgreekcouncil on Instagram. Photos by Larry Silk.

THURSDAY, JUlY 14, 2022 weekend about 50 of them came back and parked by the bay road blasting boom boxes, again, across from residential homes. Hopefully, the 100th Precinct will address this potential problem and come up with a contingency plan. A Concerned Resident
Kudos Councilwoman Dear Editor: Many thanks to our NYC Councilwoman Joann Ariola for scheduling the MTA Metro bus to come to Rockaway. It was not only a big help me and to the other numerous people who took advantage of its various services. Fran Stathis Animal Rescue Dear Editor: I would like to thank the firefighters from Engine 268/Ladder137 for saving a momma duck and her four ducklings. The duck family was walking along the barrier on a very busy Beach Channel Drive and Beach 144th Street, when three of the ducklings fell into a storm drain. I placed a call to the firehouse asking for help, and within minutes our local heroes were on the scene. They removed the storm drain cover and rescued the ducklings . The family of five was then set free safely away from the road and were on their merry way. V.B. Wild Wild West Dear Editor: Rockaway is slowly becoming the "Wild West". It's 7:15 on Sunday night, July 10. As I look out my window, I am watching well over 150 ATVs and motorcycles riding in the westbound lane going East popping wheelies on the sidewalks in front of residential homes. This is NOT the first time. It also occurred last weekend with about 100 vehicles. It is getting considerably larger with each passing weekend. Last
Less is More? Dear Editor: Once again the MTA invites travelers to and from Rockaway for a “participatory” trip down a rabbit-hole. Drafters of the latest bus “plan” seem to be claiming is “Less is more”. The main argument in favor of public transportation is that it offers inexpensive and widely available travel options for the public and that this is the lifeblood of modern urban economic life: it's what gets workers to and from their jobs, and brings people to medical care, schools, shopping, banking and entertainment. The MTA has many shortcomings but imagine the City without it... or without parts of it. More than that, politicians, scholars, transportation pundits, environmentalists, all love to spout out the societal benefits of a vibrant public transit system: getting people out of cars and onto publicly owned conveyances reduces road congestion, cuts greenhouse gas emissions, and helps in the struggle against climate change with its consequent weather disasters, etc. Moreover, by charging everyone a reasonable and equitable rate for these services, one doesn't exacerbate class differences by charging differential rates, as do ride-sharing apps, taxis and limos. That is, a fundamental element of public transit is egalitarianism But let's get down to nuts and bolts: Somehow the MTA hopes that cutting service, eliminating routes, moving routes further from their clientele—not to mention further from neighborhood shopping streets, medical services, and the post office, while simultaneously increasing distance between bus stops on a “new” Q35 route, will improve things and increase everyone's feeling of well-being. Really? It certainly will not increase ridership or passenger and business-owner satisfaction. It will inconvenience everyone and force many back into
gas-guzzling, road congesting personal vehicles. No, the MTA, not for the first time, is trying to cut the service that serves working- and middle-class residents of the Rockaways. Juggle a few numbers, change a route, eliminate another one, and, presto, no one will notice. Maybe that's why this time around there is a poorly announced web session but no public meeting. Sort of eases the way to a fait accompli. What they propose is the elimination of the Q22 between Roxbury and B 116th Street. Then they want to shift the Q35 onto that stretch of RBB with passengers bound further east having to change to a truncated Q22 at B116th St. That's foolish enough just on passenger convenience grounds. You have a narrow peninsula with a bus route, the Q35, running down the center. Its catchment area is on either side of its route but mainly consists of commuters, students, employees of local businesses and home care workers on the northern three-fourths of the peninsula. Moreover, the current Q35 route provides easy access to all the small businesses on B. 129th St. between Newport and Cronston. These businesses are successful in large part because it's easy to reach them from the Newport Avenue stops. One long additional (and possibly two or three short blocks if between-stop distances increase) will certainly hurt small business proprietors and customers...our friends and neighbors. Businesses on Beach Channel Drive East of B. 116th Street: bakeries, medical services, dentists, opticians, physiotherapists, Duane Reade and US
Post Office will also be adversely affected. Overhead Google views and census information reinforces this observation: in the stretch of the peninsula from B.149th street to B. 116th, one can see the population and housing density is greater on the northern three-quarters, i.e. from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to Jamaica Bay. In the other direction, RBB to the ocean, houses are larger and have fewer occupants per house. Without being “classist” it's fair to say that beach block residents tend not to be bus passengers. Moving the route from Newport to RBB would involve much longer distances to walk to and from a bus stop for the bulk of current Q35 users. To add insult to injury, as previously noted, the MTA proposes to increase the distance between bus stops --- currently two blocks --- on the new route!!! Even longer walks, extra blocks in winter storms and summer heat! Bizarro! To serve the maximum number of potential passengers and to minimize the average walk between homes and the nearest bus stop retain the Q35 on Newport Avenue as the one remaining east-west route. Current Q35 passengers from Brooklyn wanting the Q22 to go further east can now change for the new Q22 “ferry route” which begins just around the corner from where the Q35 now ends, at Newport and B. 116th. In other words, the Q35 in its present route is just fine. Stephen Keller (To submit a comment on the bus plan, head to: https://contact.mta. info/s/forms/bus-network-redesign)

What’s in a Name? Jamaica Bay By John C. Harris, Ranger at Jamaica these waters to fish and hunt. Rustdorp as Jamaica—a corrup- colonialism—supposedly justiBay Wildlife Refuge However, the permanent Yamec- tion of the word Yamecah. The fied by God—ran their course.
Jamaica Bay is a dynamic estuary with a complex past. The Science and Resilience Institute of Jamaica Bay once referred to this ecosystem as the "Rainforest of New York City." The Bay is teeming with life. It boasts over 325 species of birds, 100 species of fish, and 50 species of butterflies. Yet its ecology hangs in a delicate balance, distressed after a century of industrial pollution and large-scale residential development. But long before these contaminations, the northeast shoreline and meadows north of Jamaica Bay were the territory of a community of Munsee Lenape known as the Canarsie Tribe. In the Munsee variant of Algonkian, Yamecah, or Jameco, translates to “land of the beaver.” The mammals were a bountiful resource for those who utilized
ah settlement was further inland at the site of the former Beaver Pond situated alongside a key trading path—the route of which is roughly traced by Jamaica Avenue. In 1655, English settlers supposedly exchanged the territory north of Jamaica Bay for typical colonial wares, including a gun, ammunition, and powder. The following year, Dutch Governor Peter Stuyvesant authorized a lease to the English settlers, spurring the colonial occupation of Yamecah, which at the time, the Dutch referred to as Rustdorp, meaning rest stop. In 1665, a year after the British conquest of New Amsterdam, leaders of Long Island settlements coordinated the transfer of colonial holdings. The new governors settled boundary disputes, authorized law codes, and rechristened
newly structured settlement extended southward to the water’s edge, providing the namesake of our Jamaica Bay. In 1670, Daniel Denton, a founder of the Jamaica settlement, noted the decline of the Indigenous population along the Bay, declaring, "It is to be admired how strangely they have [decreased] by the Hand of God…for since my time, when there were six towns, they are reduced to two small villages, and it had been generally observed, that where the English come to settle, a Divine Hand makes way for them, by removing or cutting off the Indian either by Wars one with the other, or by some raging mortal Disease." His words reveal that within two decades, the worst effects of settler
The Yamecah name is the core of Jamaica Bay, which is itself the center of Gateway’s story. As the contemporary stewards of Jamaica Bay, Gateway is responsible for the elevation of this narrative in our programming. While Denton’s account exposes the devastation of Indigenous society in and around the settlement, Canarsie descendants may be represented within the five federally recognized Lenape tribes in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Ontario. Likewise, we must consider the likelihood that their descendants remain part of the community. Today, we can further cement the enduring legacy of the Canarsie Tribe by promoting the history behind the name Jamaica Bay.

Blessed With Seaside Living Summertime in Rockaway Beach is full of great energy and so many wonderful happenings. It truly is our time to shine and enjoy the company of good friends and family. We are blessed to live near the water and be in a community where we feel safe and happy. There are also times we feel exhausted from the busyness of our social calendar. It’s a gift
to know when to stay home and rest your body and mind. FOMO is a real thing and we don’t want to miss anything. My Mom always did her best to tell us we need not be at every party but we sure did try to attend most of them. Life is short and every year on July 14, I am reminded of the untimely death of my baby brother, John Timlin. He was only 22 years old and was killed in an
automobile accident. It would be devastating and life changing for my family. We would be crushed and learn to rebuild a life without John. My Mom would die two years later, perhaps from a broken heart. I write about this life lesson because it is John who taught us there are no guarantees in life. Here today and gone tomorrow. Live life as if this was your last day. My siblings are fun, happy people with big hearts always remembering our brother John. We all love and respect one another and take nothing for granted. That doesn’t mean we don’t argue about certain things but we have unconditional love for one another. Losing a brother teaches you to hold your loved ones close but live a life worth living. We were blessed with a strong foundation from our loving parents. I was speaking to my dear friend and neighbor, Joan Moors who has lived a long life and has so much wisdom and experience that she often shares with me. She teaches me something new every time I speak to her. I am in awe of her zest for life and how she
moves around like a twenty-yearold. Joan tells me she chooses to live life rather than just exist. She goes to church every day and has lots of good friends. On this one day she looks me in the eye and says, always speak to your children and let go of any grudges. Always keep your faith and stay close to God. We are connected by something greater than ourselves. All you have to do is look up in the sky and know I am here. Grateful to have Joan as my neighbor. Each of us has had some terrible loss and my wish for you is to know there is more in life than what we can see. Only the good die young. If you have someone you are grieving for, please know they are safe and home. My brother John was a great guy who lived a full life in the short 22 years he was with us on earth. He is our guardian angel. I believe in guardian angels and feel the presence right here in Rockaway Beach by the ocean. So yes, we are blessed to live by the water. May you find your happiness, May you reside in peace, May you never suffer and live life well.

Among the various organs of the human body, the skin is one of the more interesting and diverse ones. The skin is much more than just a barrier. It is strong yet supple, fixes or regenerates itself when damaged, and it can change color to adapt to the climate. It is more active than many people realize; it synthesizes a number of compounds including immunoglobulin A, which is important to our immune defense system. The skin plays diverse roles in the body – it helps to regulate the body temperature and it initializes the process of vitamin D production in response to sun exposure. It has absorptive properties which allow it to take in things from the environment, from ben-

eficial medications to harmful toxins. It also excretes toxins via the sweat glands, including phthalates, bioaccumulated toxic elements like cadmium and aluminum, and organochlorinated pesticides. It also secretes oils and acids that keep it supple and protect it from outside invaders. The skin is part of the integumentary system which includes hair, nails, and certain exocrine glands, such as sweat glands. It is an impossible harmony of specialized cells working in intricate synergy. The skin must have strength and durability yet at the same time it must be flexible and able to repair itself. The skin has three layers – the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Each layer has specialized functions. The epidermis is the outermost layer. It is the layer you see when you look at yourself. It is made up primarily of special
cells called keratinocytes. As the name implies, these cells produce a substance called keratin, a protein that is durable and water-resistant. Your hair is made of keratin. As these cells mature, they get pushed up towards the surface and they produce lots of keratin. It takes about four weeks for a keratinocyte to go from formation to shedding off the skin’s surface, meaning that on average, we have a new skin layer every month. Increased rubbing makes epidermal cells grow faster, and if the rubbing doesn’t increase skin shedding, a thickened area of skin called a callus will develop. Calluses are a form of hyperkeratosis, a condition where the outer layer of the skin thickens. Another epidermal cell is the melanocyte, which secretes a black pigment called melanin. Skin color is determined by the amount of melanin production and may be regulated by either sun exposure or genetic predisposition. The middle skin layer, the der-
mis, contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, and hair follicles. The dermis plays a vital role in body temperature regulation. When the body heats up in response to exercise or high temperatures, the blood vessels dilate allowing a greater volume of blood to circulate near the skin surface, releasing heat. In addition, sweat glands in the dermis produce more sweat which cools the body when the sweat evaporates on the surface. The hypodermis also contains blood vessels and nerves, but it has a high number of adipocytes (fat cells) which act as insulators and shock absorbers. The hypodermis also anchors the skin to the underlying bones and muscles. Keep your skin in mind every time you go for a check-up as skin changes occur with many different diseases and conditions. In the Good Old Summertime SUMMER CRUSHES AND HAM SANDWICHES IN 1950 ROCKAWAY By Jean Caligiuri Mckenna
The mystery of summer’s magical ability to tap into nostalgic feelings and long-lost memories simply through its sights and scents is a forever pleasant enigma that often holds a certain edge over the other seasons, particularly in its romantic connection to our comingof-age years. Whenever the air is a humid and muggy hot 90 degrees, I am transported in memory to my own coming of age in the hazy lazy days of yesteryear that feel as vivid and alive as if they were happening today. Mama is in the kitchen, the calendar displays July, every day is Saturday, and the sounds of summer beckon just outside my window. Passing crowds with coolers and folded beach chairs in tow are cheerfully heading up the block towards the boardwalk’s distant lifeguard whistles, and I can’t wait to get to the beach! Being a young teen, this year’s summer is to be different for me than those before, one destined to be indelibly saved in my memories. For I am going through an all-important rite of passage for a teenage girl: my first summertime crush. Although I have had crushes before, this one is unique because it is the kind that every girl remembers; where the beach and summer are back-drop scenery and life is blossoming perfectly in-step with the sunny optimism of the times. Rockaway in this mid-century year is setting a summer visitor attendance record as every day is one sunny hot snapshot picture. The film “In the Good Old Summertime” has rekindled post-war summertime nostalgia and it seems more autos than ever are on the road, shuttling down-for-the-day visitors to the peninsula. Even Sunday Mass, teeming with local parishioners and scores of seasonal bungalow tenants from Brooklyn and the Bronx, overflows outside onto the sidewalk.
The beach, not 100 feet away, is a daily chock-full ‘blanket to blanket’ sea of camped sunbathers. The mobbed wooden boardwalk is just as lively, swarming with packed concession lines extending down to the sand. Songs like “La Vie En Rose” sung by Bing Crosby can be heard flowing from portable Studebaker radios as Peggy Lee’s sultry “Summertime” mingles with the stifling humidity of the hottest summer in recent memory. Life for me is also excitedly changing, as I am in my junior summer at Far Rockaway High School. The P.S. 44 days of Playland, hopscotch, and Sunday comics have ebbed into the past in exchange for Modern Romance Beauty magazines and warm Wednesday night fireworks by the swing park

following sing-alongs of popular songs like “Goodnight, Irene” with my girlfriends and the fellas. On this mid-summer day in 1950, my chum, Rose Rios, and I will meet as we do occasionally, and stroll to the beach to socialize, bask under the steamy blazing sun, and cool off intermittently in the refreshing ocean. We are also sure to sit very close to the familiar and towering lifeguard chair. In our one-piece bathing suits and fashionable head kerchiefs, we cut our best Esther Williams and Doris Day pin-up figures, hoping to make an impression on the two lifeguards perched atop it. These days, our fancies are Johnny Cornell and Walter Moran, who are stationed at Beach 84th Street. But to us, they may just as well be mov-
ie stars, Van Johnson or Cornell Wilde. Sporting beautiful tans and sitting up so high as if on pedestals, they are like bronze sculpted Adonises in dark sunglasses and noses doused with Noxzema. Staring up at them more often than not, we are in enamored awe of these cool modern day gladiator knights, confidently gazing out over their domain, ready to come to our rescue at a moment’s notice. They are several years older than us and not only do they make us feel protected, but we are also taken by their down-to-earth friendliness. Rose and I have been vying for their attention and our frequent visits have paid off as we have struck up a friendship with them, sharing friendly banter, Coca Cola’s, and posing for photos with my Kodak Brownie. Both fellows are quite likeable, but it is blond haired Johnny whom I am smitten with. Our daily visits to their chair tower have become a ritual, and we feel like big shots keeping company with these iconic hero-like figures who are the center pieces of the vast beach blanketed umbrella commune. A brimming sandy thoroughfare of canoodling couples, chatty transistor radios, older ladies in beach chairs playing ‘gin rummy,’ loud vendors trekking the hot sand peddling Schlitz beer and Chesterfield cigarettes, and children romping back and forth to the water, all serve this busy sunsoaked community, but also tend to pose challenges for us in holding the lifeguards’ attention as often as we would like. Devising a ‘perfect’ plan for us to have an upper hand in staying noticed, as well as subtly showing my fondness for Johnny, I conclude that the best way to man’s heart is through his stomach. I know that today is Mama’s weekly trip to the A&P on Beach 88th Street for bread and cold cuts. Rushing back through the crowded sand, over the boards, and crossing the new beach front road, (Shorefront Continued on page 39

Parkway) my pal and I hurry up the block to my house as fast as can be. Papa has rented our upstairs to tenants through Labor Day, and we use the basement kitchen facing the backyard. Hurriedly waving through backyard mosquitoes buzzing around the open back doorway, I “borrow” from the refrigerator, with Rose standing by on watch, quickly making ham sandwiches with sliced tomato and mustard on Wonder bread. “Surely this might do the trick”, I’m thinking, as we speedily make our way back to the lifeguard chair, coolly delivering the goods, as if we just happened to have some extras to share. With a big smile, Walter and Johnny gladly accept, with Johnny adding simply “thanks, girls.” That alone is enough to make my heart flutter, and for the next several days this ‘goodwill’ gesture is casually repeated. The beach trips often-after are never without a
Page 39
THURSDAY, July 14, 2022 prepared sandwich or two for the always appreciative lifeguards, (particularly Johnny), making this summer a worthwhile 90-degree nirvana – until one day when Mama asks where the ham has been going. Rose and I are caught in the act making sandwiches and I confess, with Mama immediately yelling at me; “No, No! I buy the ham and tomatoes for you, not the lifeguards!” I try to downplay it with “but Ma, they gotta eat”, and “it’s just for today,” but with no luck. Undeterred, I quickly make the sandwiches above her animated protests, stuff them in the bag with a one-track mind, and run back to the beach with my “partner in crime,” determined to keep this good thing going. Nothing seems to matter more to girls with a crush. These gift deliveries of cold cuts and heart thumps will last through another smitten hazed week or two and each time will be rewarded with an appreciative “thank you” and a skipped heartbeat. Then, to my sudden surprise, the kitchen
fridge will bear no more ham and tomatoes! Mama’s patience will have thinned, and in her wisdom, she will put her foot down and end the issue in the most direct way-by cutting the supply! With no fuel to feed the flame, Rose and I will nevertheless return daily to the beach, reveling in our place in the sun next to the lifeguard chair, none the richer or poorer. The rest of summer will be enjoyed the same until the warm months dissipate and Rockaway returns to normal as life moves on to new seasons and new crushes. Until then, the ardors of youth and summer’s bliss will still be served, minus the ham sandwiches! Looking back, the boys probably didn’t even notice or mind that the sandwiches stopped coming, though Rose and I might have been embarrassed, hoping it wouldn’t hurt our standing with them. But memories tend to grow in legend over time. The fervorous crush was actually more of a harmless fantasy that I knew would never amount to anything. And the ‘bronzed Adonises’ were more like cute 19 or
20-year-old college boys with sunburned shoulders. I can still, however, hear my mother’s objections over my giving away the cold cuts she had bought for me to enjoy with the little money she had. Such shenanigans can only be chalked up to the youthful fervor of a teen’s folly; of things that seem so important at the time, and like everything else, soon pass. Like those enviable teen years, all of the happy pieces of that exciting summer have too, long since gone away. The house and Mama, Playland, and even the old boardwalk have taken their place in the memory of time. Yet the thrill of summer, where the warm air, the beach, and the hope of young love all meet, remains timeless. And on this hot July day in 1950 Rockaway, everything is timelessly stilled in its perfect place. It’s 12 noon, the roller coaster clatters and roars in the distance. Mama is hanging the clothes in the backyard, life is young, the boardwalk, my first summer crush and the beach are waiting, and this will all last forever!

SLICE OF LIFE By Beth Hanning Television Ever since I was a kid, I have loved to watch television. I am not particular either. I have always loved 60 Minutes, CBS Sunday Morning, Reality TV, thrillers, romance, you name it I have enjoyed it. I remember as a small child waiting patiently for TV Guide to be delivered so I could see what each of my shows was going to be about that week. I also remember being disappointed when after the summary it said, “Repeat.” I was also disappointed when my strict
mother also read the summary and said, “Beth Ann, you cannot watch The Facts of Life this week, the content is inappropriate for someone your age.” So, now as an adult, I cannot be happier that television shows do not end after May sweeps. We have television shows to watch all year long. I have so many to watch I have a “note” page in my phone to keep track. And if you miss a show, do not worry, you can On-Demand it, DVR it the next time it is on or go to one of
the many streaming sites we all now purchase. Thank you to the cable sites for providing “summer series.” My most recent favorite binge watch was The Offer. This show is about a young producer trying to get The Godfather made. Starring Miles Teller as a young new producer Al Ruddy, the show is so interesting with the real-life people and the interesting story behind the difficulty in getting one of the most popular movies ever made. Television is something that unites us. It is something you can do as a family; you can discuss on the beach and swap what shows you can watch next. Even my students get excited when I watch a show they watch and will ask me what episode I am up to and what I think of the characters. I even love the educational aspect of television. If not for television, I would not have learned about how beautiful the landscape is in Absaroka County, Wyoming. I also never would have
known how much crime that Absaroka Sheriff ’s office deals with! I also loved the show Turn: Washington’s Spies. I know the basic details about the American Revolution, but I had no idea about the Culpepper Spy Ring, an integral part of the war and that it all took place in Long Island. People often ask me, “How do you have time to watch so much television?” Well, even if I am folding laundry, I will place it on the bed and turn on the TV! Multitasking at its finest! I am currently enjoying Emily in Paris, about a young American marketing executive from Chicago. Good thing I have been there, because after I watch a show, I want to travel to that location. Currently on the bucket list is the country from Longmire, Bozeman, Montana from Yellowstone, and the Scottish Highlands from Outlander. What is on your must watch list? Email me and let me know (I have too many to list!) Have a great week everyone!

RTC Half Marathon and Cristin Mullen Run Results Rockaway Track Club had some amazing competitors in Saturday’s Firecracker Half Marathon and 5K. Jordan Daniel won the Half Marathon in a blistering time of 1:08:58. This is a course record for the Rockaway half marathon on the boardwalk. Sixty-eight minutes for a half marathon under any conditions is a world class effort. Special kudos to Jordan. Misael Vargas took second place. The female winner was Daheima Grant in a very respectable time of 1:38:35. Daheima was followed by Natala Balla in second. The Cristin Mullen 5K overall winner was our own Kevin Quinn in 19:10. Kevin is from a long line of amazing Rockaway athletes, consistently competitive, always with a strong effort. James Frontera placed second. On the female side, the overall
winner was Elle Riches, placing fifth overall with a time of 22:58 and of course, first in the 10-15 age group. Elles' effort for such a young runner is nothing short of amazing. We are all very impressed with her performance and potential for future com-
petition. Second place went to Mary Edwards who always places in the winner's circle. Kevin, Elle, James and Mary all represent the best of rockaway beach and we salute each of them and their families as they paid tribute to fellow runner, the late Cristin
Mullen. We thank all participants for honoring our friend Cristin Mullen, a great Rockaway Runner we lost two years ago. She will always be remembered as a wonderful friend to us all and is missed with love every day.

Wrestle Talk WRESTLING NEWS & TIPS OF BECOMING A PRO By Eric Jayden
This has been another interesting week in Pro Wrestling so let’s dive right in to the news! We start with news from the WWE. During a recent live event in Sacramento, California it was reported that WWE Superstar Natalya apparently broke character during her match against Liv Morgan and Ronda Rousey. Apparently, Liv Morgan hit Natalya with her finishing move and after the three count, Natalya stood up and began yelling at Liv Morgan and walked off back to the locker room. At this time, we are unsure why or if there is any heat between the two superstars. But reports are saying the incident was immediately cleared up after the match in the back by WWE Management. We have an update on the current WWE Scandal involving
Vince McMahon and Non-Disclosure Agreement Payments. A recent departure from one of the company's Board of Directors Mr. Connor Schell has been reported as highly suspicious since he left right before the WWE Board of Directors announced that it was investigating the WWE CEO over alleged hush money payments. Many within and outside the company, feel he may have been the person who leaked the Vince McMahon Non-Disclosure Agreements to the New York Times but it’s important to note that there is absolutely no evidence of Connor Schell's departure being related to the Vince McMahon scandal. We will continue to keep you posted. Recently, I have been getting a lot of emails about people interested in becoming professional wrestlers. I have written about this in past columns, and I feel
it’s important for those who want to follow a career in Sports Entertainment to know what to do and what you will be up against. First and foremost, make sure to finish your education and/ or have a secondary trade you can fall back on just in case you do not make it in the business. Second, find a reputable Pro Wrestling to attend. It’s important to learn the basics of wrestling, which is important for your overall growth in the business. Third, invest in proper wrestling gear once the time for you to perform comes. Pro wrestling is all about presentation. Wou want to make sure you look the part you are portraying. Be prepared to pay your dues in this business once you start, you will not be making a lot of money. So, invest in yourself and keep a steady training reg-
imen in the gym and in the ring. Keep a resume and contacts of promotions you have worked for. Remember, as a Pro Wrestler, you are your own product so you will need to invest in yourself as much as possible in the form of Pictures and Videos. This is a small glimpse of what you will be facing during your path of becoming a Professional Wrestler. Thank you for all the questions and keep sending them in to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
