THANK YOU ST. JOHN’S
“
My name is Unis Messam.
A little over a year ago I broke my arm and I was treated by Dr. James Henr y and his team at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. I was later referred to St. John’s Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy Department. It was always a pleasure going for my treatment. It’s a ver y pleasant environment. Everyone is treated with respect and cour tesy. And ever yone is made to feel welcome. If I had to rate them on a scale from 0 to 10, 0 being ver y bad and 10 being excellent, I would give them a 10+. They are a GREAT TEAM and I would recommend them to my friends and family. Keep up the good work!

Bike Adventures
Rockaway Community Park/ Edgemere Park By Katie McFadden Part of the fun of my adventures is going to places I’ve never been before. Rockaway Community Park, formerly known as Edgemere Park, was my latest stop. It’s a place I’ve written about on different occasions, yet I had never actually been there. On a hot summer Monday, I
put on my iPod and set out alone on my bike for the roughly 4-mile ride from the Rockaway Times office. I wanted to ride along the new boardwalk, so I headed to Shore Front Parkway and up the ramp I went onto Beach 106th Street. I had ridden on the first phase of the new boardwalk when it opened earlier this summer, but getting to ride a full mile from Beach 106th

to Beach 86th was truly a treat. It’s amazing how long a mile can actually feel. At around Beach 97th Street, I was subconsciously looking for the exit ramps, thinking my boardwalk cruise would soon end, and then reminded myself that I had a whole half-mile of fresh boardwalk ahead of me. It was so nice to be able to enjoy a straight, car-free ride, with the ocean in the background. At Beach 86th, I went back onto Shore Front Parkway and continued to about Beach 67th Street and rode under the Rockaway Freeway to catch some shade. At Beach 44th Street, I paid a little visit to Edgemere Farm, another place I have written about before. I had passed by in the winter months and was happy to see that every plot is flush with flowers, herbs, vegetables and
other greenery. It’s a pretty amazing site when you consider that it’s a farm right in New York City. I then continued back up Beach Channel Drive and turned toward the bay on Beach 51st Street, where Edgemere Park begins. (It ends at Beach 58th Street). There were a few surprises when I got there. The site is home to Rockaway’s Sanitation Department. Also, several signs reminded me that Edgemere Park once served as Rockaway’s dumping ground. It was opened in 1938, acquired by the Parks Department between 1948 and 1955, became Rockaway Community Park in 1971 and the landfill was capped in 1991. Today, the Parks Department describes the 253-acre Rockaway Continued on page 19

thing again. Damn, I forgot to mull it over while at Connolly’s. Now, you’ll never catch me getting on a line like that but I do get a kick out of watching the line grow. I sometimes try to make eye contact with the people at the end of the line to see if they’re just insane. It’s weird because they really look normal – except for where they’re standing. Seven miles from the ordering counter. The indoor – outdoor Surf Club was jumping but watching the people on line made me hungry and Bungalow Bar was part of the itinerary so why wait. Off we went for more summer revelry. We reveled and reveled and wound up toasting ourselves about how we executed such a great day. Ryan Whelan and Sean Tubridy helped. And now this column, like life often does, is about to veer off without warning. We go merrily along with all that summer brings and are surrounded by reminders about how life is good. But death doesn’t take a summer vacation and just like that, the sun can seem a little less bright, a summer breeze not so sweet. Of course, there’s nothing to say to someone who’s lost a family member. The best you can do, the best you can hope for, is to not say something stupid. A few people with close ties to our paper have had loved ones die recently. I wanted to write something that would be heartfelt and meaningful but, really, there’s nothing more to say than: sorry for your loss. I hope the dumb comments that are sure to come will be few and soon forgotten. Sorry for your loss.

Last weekend felt like the first real summer weekend and it came after the 4th of July. Which threw me off. I usually declare summer over on the 4th but that’s after a few weekends of true summer. Didn’t happen that way this year. I’m stupid enough to give myself the whammy and here goes: I haven’t even put the air conditioner in yet. Anyway, in order to do deep journalistic research on how things were going I had to swing by the concessions on the boardwalk. They were too busy for me to judge. They must’ve been giving out fresh twenty dollar bills. The biggest attraction in Rockaway these days can’t be the beach or boardwalk, it’s gotta be lines. (Which might be an improvement over line dancing, but I digress). Can’t you just hear the conversation in Brooklyn? Man, I gotta get to Rockaway. They’ve got lines of people. Just lining up. It’s crazy, man. I figured I’d mull this cultural phenomenon with a frozen at Connolly’s. Okay, plural. Frozens are like Lay’s Potato Chips – you can never just have one. As glad as I was to have a great spot at the bar clutching a chilly pina, my happy meter almost broke when I was given a Connolly’s t-shirt by Kerry Ann Daly. Now I never have to look up whether it’s Connolly’s or Connelly’s. It’s right on my shirt. I know it should be easy to remember. It’s Connolly’s with an “o” like in frozen but I usually forget how to spell by the time I leave. When I stepped outside I practically ended up on a line coming from the Rockaway Beach Surf Club and Tacoway Beach six or seven blocks away. The place on 87th is crushing it. But that line

It’s easy for many of us to move on but for some the Sandy saga continues. Jim Bunyan, who lost his house to fire the night of Sandy, sends daily updates to Build It Back officials and elected officials. One this week read: “It has been 986 days out of our house. I can report that there is no activity at our house. No rental reimbursement has been received.” Mr. Romski explained to us on Friday that there are issues pertaining to inspections, but explanations are cold comfort when you have been out of your house for 986 days. ***** The Steve Belson Memorial Swim Music Festival is all set for Saturday, August 1. The lineup includes Bill Kirchen, John Tichy, The Lustre Kings, Thirsty Dave and Squid. The organizers have awarded more than $115,000 so far in memory of a much-loved firefighter who died on 9/11.

their area. They are aware of the issues related to their sector and can work on addressing these issues as a team along with the neighborhood coordination officers( NCOs) and the other officers assigned to the sector area on the other tours. The Commanding Officer of the 101st Precinct, Captain Justin Lenz, has also received positive feedback from members of his community. “So far feedback has been very positive, but we have a ways to go to get more members of the community involved and to increase our outreach, through Neighborhood Working Groups, Lenz said. Danny Ruscillo, the President of the 100th Precinct Community Council, is on board with the program and believes that the new tactic, combined with the hiring of more officers, should help quiet gun violence moving forward. “I truly believe this Community Policing Program can aide in the reduction of shootings along with the extra Police officers, Ruscillo said. “The community must play a large role and when they see something, they must say something. Hopefully the community will become more comfortable with the NYPD which can contribute to the reduction of the shootings. The new community policing pilot is one of several new initiatives launched to help bridge the gap between the police and city residents. Last week, the Queens Library launched the Far Rockaway Youth Court, which aims to help young, at risk youth learn the ins and outs of the justice system. Lenz believes that these new programs will help to quell violence. “Anything that gets the police and the community talking more helps stem violence, he explained. “There are so many youth involvement programs available in the Rockaways. We plan to be involved with these organizations and activities to create alternatives to violence and gangs. Neighborhood Based Policing helps reduce tension and creates alternate means for members of the community to interact with the police.

Brad Goodman, long time owner of Channel Drive Shell, was profiled in The Rockaway Times some weeks back. His family surprised him with a framed copy of the article. (We told Brad this would be the one time we’d allow him in the paper while not wearing a Rockaway Times t-shirt!)

Secrets Of Rockaway Hiding In Plain Sight By Kevin Boyle
Quick quiz? Where is Point Breeze Place? No, not in Breezy Point. It’s actually on the other end of the peninsula in Bayswater. More on Point Breeze in a minute. But first, did you know? Did you know there are only two official New York City landmarks in Rockaway? The most recent one to earn the distinction is the firehouse on Beach 116th which was named a landmark just a couple of years ago. But in 1970 an old cemetery in Far Rockaway, now known as the Cornell Burial Ground got landmark status. The Cornells were quite possibly the first European family to make a home on the Rockaway peninsula, building a place in 1690 near what is now Beach 19th street. (The Cornell family founded Cornell University). The cemetery on Caffrey Avenue is now managed by the City Parks Department. Although it’s cool to know such a landmark exists there’s not much to the place. With no tombstones visible, the grounds look like any other empty lot in Rockaway and are not accessible since a lock on the fence keeps you out even though as the joke goes, you are dying to get in. But while you might not get
Houses in Bayswater into the cemetery, other stops in this neck of the woods are worth it. Mott Avenue is best known for being a busy commercial strip but head north into Bayswater and keep going. Bayswater itself is a secret to many on the west end of the peninsula. Most people have heard of it but never ventured there. Too bad, it’s a bucolic neighborhood with some of the most beautiful homes on the peninsula. Norton Drive on the waterfront
qualifies as a truly scenic drive. But back to Mott Avenue. The last turn you can make on Mott before the road turns into Baywater State Park is Point Breeze Lane. Here you’ll come across an old shuttered mansion on a plot of land just shy of an acre. It’s a got a couple of brick columns at the entrance with “Sunset Lodge” etched into each. The house was inhabited by an assortment of eccentrics and has its own colorful history. It
The Sunset Lodge was eventually taken over by the Audobon Society and is now part of Bayswater State Park. Which is the only State Park in Queens. Bayswater State Park is worth a picnic or at least a stroll through. It sits on 12 acres with beach, marsh, and woodlands. There are a couple of picnic tables and no people. It’s a great spot to appreciate the bay’s beauty and enjoy a unique view of Continued on page 42

Sailing Musicians to Debut Album By Katie McFadden After the ocean uprooted Christel and Jarad Astin from their Rockaway Beach home during Hurricane Sandy, the musicians decided to make a new life living on it. With their two daughters on board, the couple, known by their stage names Stell and Snuggs, set sail on a musical adventure, starting their lives over on a sailboat. Wanting to be closer to the sea, the couple moved to Rockaway Beach from Brooklyn in 2008. As professional musicians struggling to raise a family, they found Rockaway to offer a quality of life that couldn’t be found elsewhere in the city. They were able to live closer to the sea and kept a small sailboat in Jamaica Bay, spending much of their free time taking full advantage of the water activities that Rockaway has to offer. As Sandy approached, the Astins took their instruments and other valuables and evacuated their ground-floor apartment, a block away from the beach. The storm destroyed their apartment and the family was displaced for several months. They decided to

help their neighbors, forming the Hurricane Sandy Relief Kitchen with former owner of Two Boots in Park Slope Andrew Wandzilak. Together, they delivered hot soup and sandwiches to Rockaway residents, starting just two days after the storm. The relief kitchen continued for several months, but the Astins decided not to permanently return to Rockaway, or to settle on any land. Instead, they took to the sea. In October 2013, the Astins moved onto a sailboat and Stell & Snuggs began touring down south. Stell and Snuggs’ sound is a mixture of gypsy soul and Latin music, which the couple creates with an accordion, flute, piano, ukulele and their voices. The Astins have performed more than 200 times from New York City to Bermuda and throughout the Northern portion of the Caribbean, including the Spanish, US, and British Virgin Islands, St. Martin, St. Barth’s, and Antigua. They often dock at marinas, where having electricity and fresh water make life simpler. “The lifestyle is great for us. We are on tour with our kids, homeschooling and able to take time
to be both professional musicians and a family. Especially in NYC where expenses are high, we found we had to work so much to make ends meet that family was coming in second,” Christel Astin says. The family has even been able to spend more quality time together while Stell and Snuggs make a living through their music. They even found time to record their debut album, “Vela!”, which they’ll be showcasing locally throughout the summer, on tour. “Vela!” was made possible through a successful Kickstarter campaign that was funded by midOctober 2014. Stell and Snuggs was able to record much of their album while in the area last fall at Community Music Space in Red Hook, NY before they set sail for their re-
turn trip to Bermuda in November 2014. They overcame several technical difficulties and hurdles while trying to finish the album while sailing, but the recording was officially complete in May of this year, six months behind schedule. Now Stell and Snuggs are ready to show it off with local performances. At an average of 5 knots, or about 1.15 mph, the family made their way back up north during a three-week trek in June. Having spent two seasons dealing with life on the sea, the family knows how to prepare, by packing enough provisions for several weeks, taking turns at the wheel and monitoring the weather conditions. Dept of Transportation – Transparent as Asphalt By Rick Horan Sometimes you wonder if City Agencies ever read the brochures their public relations departments issue from time to time. Take the DOT for instance. Back in April of 2008 they released a colorful brochure promising “transparency, openness, collaboration and trust.” In the years since then DOT has indeed listened to the Rockaway / Broad Channel community but then done exactly the opposite. So much for collaboration. Such was the case with the narrowing of Cross Bay Blvd from three lanes to two a couple of years ago. This was one of the latest examples of “traffic calming,” the City’s excuse for progress. This regressive policy results in the permanent removal of entire lanes our roads. Their reasoning is that “extra capacity” encour-
Page 15
THURSDAY, JULY 16, 2015
ages speeding. What extra capacity? Once the trucks with the white paint leave we are left to deal with half a road and a lot of traffic that is anything but calm. Then red light cameras that started popping up all over the City. Lawmakers in Staten Island tried to verify that these devices were actually helping to make intersections safer, but DOT’ refused to provide them with the relevant crash data they asked for. They ended up getting what they needed from AAA. The upshot was that the initial reports issued by DOT were misleading. After all the 2014 data was on the table injuries actually increased by a cumulative 35 percent at the 26 intersections where red light cameras were installed on Staten Island.” This is trust? Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg agreed that cer-
tain aspects of the red light camera program should be posted online, yet DOT’s policy continues to favor raising revenue over public safety. Case in point is the Rockaway’s own speed camera on Beach Channel Drive and 106th St. (not 104th St. as the ticket says). When the camera first appeared over a year ago the Commissioner said they were evaluating putting up signs advising drivers of the speed camera. Well, not only have they decided to keep quiet about the camera, they even refuse to erect signage to warn unsuspecting drivers that they are approaching a school. Apparently DOT wants people to go over 40 MPH for the ticket revenue even at the cost of our children’s safety. According to state law, NYC can only use 140 speed cameras in school zones. DOT’s current policy of not identifying school zones effectively makes the whole City a school zone, a clever way of circumventing the law and pushing their Vision Zero agenda. I just hope that no kids have to suffer the consequences. Lastly, when Bill de Blasio was still Public Advocate back in April, 2013 he unveiled a “Transparency Report Card,” finding many agencies had failed to obey the Freedom of Information (FOIL) law and make records public. The re-
port concluded with a half-dozen recommendations including assessing fines and passing laws mandating Agencies proactively publish commonly requested documents online. Well since he’s been Mayor there hasn’t been much progress at DOT. Here’s two examples. 1.) Last year I FOILed revenue information on Rockaway’s speed and red light cameras. After 9 months I was told that they didn’t have that information. 2.) DOT uses traffic studies and federal guidelines to make important decisions about our roads but amazingly they refuse to share those studies with the public. DOT lawyers said I needed to FOIL the information. Wait a minute, I think I’ve heard that one before. Got an idea for Smarter Transportation? Support For Wounded Warriors Dear Editor, Thank you so much for this article. We support the Wounded Warriors Project with monthly contributions and are so thankful to them and their families for their honor and sacrifice. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see how Major Brezler was treated by this administration. Unfortunately, there is a breathtakingly long list of disappointments regarding how servicemen and women are treated as of late. I pray the tide will turn soon. Thank you to all my fellow Rockaway residents who have hosted the Wounded Warriors for 11 years! Dorothy Wagner

You made us all so proud! About Urban Upbound Dear Editor, (Re: Urban Upbound article, 7/9/15) I just wanted to clear up a few things for the record. Although youth programming is on the horizon for our Far Rockaway campus, it is not a service we currently offer. As the article correctly stated, we do offer Workforce Development Services to individuals (job readiness training, resume writing, and job search/placement assistance) and to employers (assistance with recruitment and prescreening of qualified candidates for open positions). In addition we have financial counseling, SNAP (Food Stamps) and health benefits enrollment. All of our services are free and we are able to provide them to anyone, 18 years or older,

who resides in NYC. Although Urban Upbound did manage the Workforce1 (WF1) Center until December of 2014 and continues to manage the WF1 center in Long Island City, the Far Rockaway WF1 center is currently being managed by a private corporation, EDSI Solutions, headquartered in Dearborn, MI. We are thrilled to be part of the Rockaway community (especially now that it’s summer!) and look forward to being of service to it’s residents for many years to come. We can be reached at 718-7840877 X8 or by contacting Lori@urbanupbound.org. Lori Rodriguez
All Around Kudos Dear Editor: When my husband, Jim and I arrived in Rockaway June 2nd from Florida, we picked up The Rockaway Times at 116th St. I read Kevin Boyle’s name, I knew that this newspaper was worth reading. Jim and I were updated on the Rockaway community as we read articles and ads from cover to cover. We put the list of restaurants and phone numbers on the fridge. We love reading Boyleing Points and Katie Mcfadden’s articles. Both Kevin and Katie have that Mark Twain wit. One friend Fred Marino is the perfect person for sales. Congratulations to the entire staff for an outstanding newspaper. Jim and I hope that we can receive it in Florida when we return to the village in September. Having recovered from ovarian cancer, two strokes, and corroded artery surgeries. I was looking for a gym to workout. Cyber Zone is perfect for my needs- friendly staff and great equipment. A Daughter Responds Dear Editor: My name is John Scaccia, I live in Belle Harbor and I’m a big fan of your paper, I look forward to its arrival every Thursday. You really capture the spirit and essence that is Rockaway. My daughter, who is a rising freshman at Fontbonne Hall Academy was so bothered by the airplane pulling the banner promoting the acceptance of the Nazi swastika this past Saturday that she wanted to write a letter to the airplane company that was hired to fly the banner. Below is the letter she sent; Hello, my name is Taylor. I’m a 14 year old girl who lives in Belle Harbor, Rockaway NY. I was enjoying a lovely day on the beach with my family, when an advertising plane came by. Now, this plane had a very offensive and insensitive sign on it. It was the Nazi sign. Where I live there are a lot of Jewish families that live here and spend many summer days on the beach. My mother is also Jewish. When she saw the sign she was disgusted
and confused. I don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to advertise that kind of thing on a family beach or anywhere, but it was disgusting and very rude. I bet I’m not the only one who thinks this, however I might be the only to say it aloud. Feel free to print. I thought your readers would be interested. John Scaccia
Better Bus Ideas
Dear Editor: I’ve noticed some opposition to the idea of establishing Select Bus Service on the Woodhaven/Cross Bay Blvd. corridor. Many oppose designating a bus lane in each direction for this service. However, even if the Dept. of Transportation does not dedicate a bus lane for this, service on the Q52/Q53 Limited lines can still be speeded up. Why can’t we have off board fare collection now so that everyone will pay at the machines on the sidewalk, get their receipts, and just walk on the buses? I’ve often seen buses held up for several minutes while people look for the MetroCard they still have money on and, meanwhile, the light turns red and the bus is held up. Also, why can’t we have the longer, articulated buses now? They can carry more passengers and, with three doors, they allow for faster boarding. This kind of modified SBS service could be implemented while decisions are made about whether to have bus lanes or not. Gary Williams
Saving Jamaica Bay: Off To A Festival A documentary film, Saving Jamaica Bay, (formerly known as Jamaica Bay Lives), fours years in the making, is close enough to the finish line that filmmaker Dan Hendrick announced this week that he has submitted the film to its first major film festival. “We still have some polishing to do. We’ve got an amazing composer working on original music right now. We’ve already lined up a great sound mixer and will start making some color adjustments soon. The next few months will be focused

on fine tuning and making the film as beautiful and powerful as it can be,â€? Hendrick said. “One of the coolest things I’ve been working on recently is the end credits. We’ll be giving thanks to everyone who made a donation, or contributed their time and ideas. The list is long ‌ really long ‌ and it reminds me of all the people who stood with us, who believed in us and took that leap of faith,â€? he added. For more information, go to : JamaicaBayLives.com

Oh Rockaway, Of Thee I Sing By Lou Pastina There is a renaissance happening in Rockaway and it is evident everywhere. To quote the famous poet “there is music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air.” But it is a revolution that is good for the soul. There are places popping up all over Rockaway, restaurants, music, art, and theater…all signs of a culture that is beginning to grow and expand. There are Yogi’s, meditation groups, book clubs, surfers, paddle boarders, kayakers, bike riders, walkers, and runners, everything you can imagine. Where did all this come from? How is it happening now? Oddly it appears that Sandy has provided the impetus in many ways. The massive amount of infrastructure spend in Rockaway is bringing a resurgence of entrepreneurial spirit to the peninsula. But much of it is coming from the mermaids and mermen that have always lived here in Rockaway, for Sandy not only brought destruction and chaos and hopelessness, it brought love and friendship and surprisingly, hope itself. I can see it in the simple things. For instance, flowers, yes flowers. After two years, you can see that those that got their homes back up and running began to focus on their trees and flowers. If you haven’t noticed there are trees and flowers blooming all over Rockaway. Some are remnants of bulbs that survived the storm somehow, but many others are the result of homeowners and communities replanting. There is nothing more hopeful than someone who plants a seed. From that seed I have seen so many blossoms this year. There are reds, purples, oranges, yellows, greens and so many other colors exploding from block to block. Most of these gorgeous ornaments
were planted in the spring, but many were planted last fall. How great is it to see some patch of dirt sprout up with a riot of color six months later. And not all the seeds were of the variety that needed planting in the ground. And these seeds are the most beautiful and the most evident, and I believe the real reason for the renaissance, these seeds were planted deep in the hearts and minds of our neighbors when we all needed help. It was neighbors, families, friends and complete strangers who came to lend a hand, and that goodwill continues to blossom two years later. I see it on the beach with neighbors who sit together in a circle as their houses continue to rise two blocks away. I see it in the face of a friend who stops by someone sitting alone on the beach to ask him or her how they are doing. I see it in the smiles returned as I ride by on my bike from block to block. I see it in the face of sisters united in keeping their families together. I see it in the faces of mothers and fathers worn out by their kids ball games but happy to be there to hug them. I see it in the guy who sits on the porch who lets you know that your taillight is out. I see it in the concern that neighbors have for another neighbor who went through a serious operation. And I hear it in the concern that neighbors and family have upon hearing bad news about a neighbor, and asking how can they help. I hear it in the bells once again ringing beautifully from St. Francis. Oh Rockaway, of thee I sing ! (Lou Pastina is a Graybeard and member of The Grayriders band. He’s a retired executive from the New York Stock Exchange and has agreed to contibure regularly to The Rockaway Times).

Community Park as “an unspoiled getaway for all New Yorkers where nature lovers come to watch birds and fishermen come to cast their lines. So I was a little surprised when all I could seem to find were a few run-down handball and basketball courts, a tiny playground and a baseball field, all of which looked like they could use some work. For a sunny summer afternoon, I was also surprised that not one person was there. I had expected so much more and was let down by what I found, but the mosquitoes in the area told me it was time to head home. I felt unaccomplished, knowing that my adventure this week would be about a desolate, rundown park. I wouldn’t accept it. I knew I had missed something. A little research and some answered questions proved that I was right and I was determined to find the diamond in the rough. I went back the next day. The weather forecast predicted rain, which later left me caught in a downpour, but I needed to go back. I went back to Beach 51st Street and went down the road next to the Sanitation department, thinking it would lead me deeper into the park. Parks Department signs indicated that there was more park there but a fenced off road into the park, showed me that I wasn’t going to get very far. Frustrated, I asked my editor if he knew how to find what I was looking for. The reliable Kevin Boyle came through. I had only been looking on the surface. What I truly wanted to find was hidden beyond first base on the baseball field near Beach 58th Street. A break in the trees and a sign indicating “Jamaica Bay Habitat Restoration showed that I was on to
something. I followed the path, which led to a wooden bridge, shaded by trees. The bridge led me to an area where there were two more bridges. Following the left one, I found myself on a pier. The site took my breath away. Looking over a calm Sommerville Basin, with different species of birds filling the skies and water, the New York City skyline in front of me and JFK airport to my right, I was taken aback. It was truly a beautiful scene. I felt like I had just uncovered a secret, but it wasn’t a secret to the family on the second pier parallel to the one I was standing on, and the fishermen lining the marsh, casting their lines into the glass-like bay. I sat on one of the rails of the pier, took off my headphones, and took in the sounds and sites. After the frustration of trying to find this hidden gem, I was immediately overcome with a feeling of peace. I couldn’t believe I was still in Rockaway and that I had never known about this. As the rain started to come down, I went back to my bike and made my way home, but I can’t wait to go back to Edgemere Park when the weather is a bit friendlier. If you’d like to explore Edgemere Park, I’d suggest heading to Beach 58th Street and the bay and heading right to the best part, behind the breaks in the tall grasses of the baseball field, or through the opening behind first base. Make sure to wear bug spray. Mosquito season is in full force and the annoying insects are there to make sure you know it. You may even want to consider wearing long pants and sleeves. If you’re a birdwatcher, bring your binoculars. If you like to fish, bring your bait and rod. If you need a place to just clear your mind, Edgemere Park is perfect.

Goldfeder Blasts MTA for Weekend Traffic Nightmare Responding to widespread reports of hour-plus delays at the Broad Channel approach to the Cross Bay Bridge as a result of traffic jams at the bridge’s sole cash toll booth, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder is calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority
(MTA) to open additional cash toll collection booths at the span during the busy summer beach season to accommodate the influx of visitors. At the same time, the Assemblyman is calling on the state agency to cooperate with the city’s police force and emergency man-

were reported to the Assemblyman and staff by phone and in messages posted to the Assemblyman’s Facebook page. According to these reports, traffic delays at the single cash payment tollbooth lane at the Cross Bay Bridge linking the island neighborhood to the Rockaway Peninsula were blocking the twolane thoroughfare. Many local residents travelling through the area at the time experienced delays of more than an hour. Traffic was no better at the Marine Park Bridge.

agement agency to ensure appropriate traffic flow and preparation ahead of the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season. “Every day, tens of thousands of local families and visitors from across the city depend on the Cross Bay Bridge to get to work and, during the summer months, enjoy the beach,” Goldfeder said. “It is unacceptable that MTA does not have the appropriate staff and toll booths in place to allow residents to cross without delay.” Sunday afternoon, numerous complaints of gridlock along Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel

People from near and far are coming to check our Rockaway Beach skatepark, located on Beach 12th, right on the boardwalk. This skatepark has been a safe haven for skaters since its opening four years ago, a place to chill or to practice new tricks. On my walk down the boardwalk, I decided to take a stop and ask a couple of skaters what this skater paradise means to them. The first skater I talked to was living back and forth from Brooklyn and Rockaway and described how much he enjoys the skatepark. “I’ve been here from the opening, it has a great vibe!” Jamal Jones said. That’s what I immediately felt when being around the skaters, there was no animosity or conflict of any sort. They were all there to skate, not cause any drama. With all the news about crime going up, this little part of the boardwalk reminded me of how great (and peaceful!) Rockaway can be. When watching the kids and adults trying out basic to difficult tricks it wasn’t unusual to hear a cheer after somebody landed one.
It created this positive aura for the skaters, which made me see what made this park so special. Even a kid from Georgia visiting Rockaway over the summer thought that this was the best skate park he has seen in his life. “I love this skate park, it’s the best one I’ve been to” said Dylan Stewart. I’m not a skater so I can’t compare different skate parks to this one, but this one does seem special. Maybe, it’s because I live very close to the area so I’m being biased, but seeing something positive in this neighborhood is an amazing thing. Something that kids can focus on instead of negative things going on. When walking down the boardwalk I’ve passed the skate park plenty of times, but I’ve never stopped to actually pay attention to what made this area so special. I’m glad I did this time. The Rockaway boardwalk is our little slice of golden treasure and this skate park definitely adds a whole new level of charm and character to it. $35 MILLION IN SANDY RELIEF FOR BEACH CHANNEL HS Senator Charles Schumer announced $35,264,759 in federal funding for the New York City School Construction Authority. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding is a reimbursement for permanent Sandy-related repairs made to the Beach Channel High School. Beach Channel High Schools suffered severe damage during Hurricane Sandy. Some of the funds will be used for continued repairs to the fire alarm and PA systems, the plumbing and electrical systems, the heating plant, the boiler room and its boilers, the oil and tank room, the auditorium stage, the restrooms, the steam traps, the hot water pump, the woodshop, the swimming pool pump room and the facility grounds. The funds are also being used for mitigation efforts in the event of future storms, including the installation of flood barrier systems for doors, raising vents and fuel pumps, the installation of flood gates, reinforced concrete walls and pads to support building foundations and to create a water-
tight room for the mechanical and electrical systems. The school has already completed repairs on the fire alarm system, the football field and the power for the score board. The federal funding will help the school continue its progress to repair the floors, walls and doors of rooms throughout the school as well as the domestic water system, the electrical system and the heating plant. “Rockaway’s Beach Channel High School was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy and these funds will help reimburse the cost of repairs to this school in a way that does not leave local taxpayers footing the bill,” Schumer said. Beach Channel High School, like many other schools along the shoreline, suffered extreme damage from the storm. Damages affected Beach Channel High School’s campus in addition to the school’s heating system. Due to the floodwater and heavy winds of the hurricane, Beach Channel’s oil tanks, integral to the heating system, and piping system under the ballfield, were severely affected.
Ulrich: High-End Litter Baskets to Help City Council Member Eric Ulrich held a press conference Tuesday on Beach 116th Street with the New York City Department of Sanitation, the Beach 116th Street Partnership, Community Board 14 and business owners unveiling twentytwo new high-end litter baskets to help keep commercial districts of Rockaway clean. Ulrich secured funding to replace the standard mesh baskets that were considered eyesores by many. Unlike mesh sanitation baskets, the high-end litter baskets feature closed tops and sides and only allow for small garbage – dis-
couraging the dumping of large bags of household and commercial trash. These baskets also help prevent wind from blowing trash onto the street. The installation of these high end litter baskets is part of a district wide initiative to tackle quality of life issues including graffiti vandalism, illegal dumping and other sanitation issues. In addition to these new litter baskets, Councilman Ulrich also funds supplemental sanitation services on Beach 116th Street which includes extra pick up and street sweeping services through The Doe Fund.

Nancy Hanson On The Mend
Nancy Hanson, who was involved in a horrific accident in January which left her unable to walk for months, is showing great progress. Although in a wheelchair for much of the run she was able to
stand and walk at the beginning and at the end of a race in Utica, New York. Here she’s seen crossing the finish line to cheers from the crowd. (See more at http://www. youregoingtobeok.com)
Russo’s Offers Thanks and Help
Frank Russo, of Russo’s On The Bay, was so pleased with the story Lizzie Hurely had written about the St. John’s For Boys graduation which was held at the well known establishment (Rockaway Times 7/2/15), he invited Lizzie and our own, Fred Marino, to an event held last Thursday. Russo’s generosity is well known and he and his establishment have helped many through the years. Most recently, they were informed about a young lady from Queens that was diagnosed with Stage 4 Sarcoma. She will be undergoing a very intensive chemo treatment in the middle of August. Family
members reached out to Russo’s regarding her wish to get married to her fiancé before the chemo treatment begins. The family had started a “Go Fund Me Account” to raise money for the Wedding: gofundme.com/x3rx94 When this came to the attention of Russo’s, they not only offered a larger and grander space than was originally inquired and will not be charging for this wedding for approximately ninety people on Sunday, August 2nd. While the wedding plans are set there is still the matter of medical bills. People can donate at: gofundme.com/MinnieWeLoveYou

Film Fest: Worth The Trip By Michael Leboff The sign of a successful film festival is one that is able to find a healthy balance of pleasing both the paying audience and the artists who worked so hard on their projects. The Long Island International Film Expo’s reputation as one of the most rewarding film festivals in our area has been forged over 18 years of hard work and dedication by a team headlined by Henry and Anne Stampfel, Debra Markowitz, and the late Robert Hansen. The film that grabbed the most attention in the festival’s build up was Marisa Vitali’s Grace, a film about recovery from addiction inspired by Vitali’s own journey in staying clean. It is a poignant look at just how hard it is for heroin addicts to battle back from addiction. Long Island, like many parts of the country, is in the midst of sorting through a generation-threatening heroin epidemic. Grace has already made noise in the festival scene, capturing Best Drama at The Cape Fear Independent Film Festival. One screening block that stood out took place on Monday afternoon. The first film of the block was an offbeat, Australian comedy called
Granny Smith. The film, which lasted just about seven minutes, follows a young professional and his friend on a zany journey in the aftermath of faking his grandma’s death to get out of work. Hilarity follows when his boss and the rest of his office decide to show their support by attending the funeral. The following film, Write With Me, turned the mood of the theater from light-hearted to curious as it explored creativity that is born out of intimate moments. It was pristinely produced and featured a well-thought-out surprise ending to give the film some weight. The third film of the block was a beautifully animated film that came
from Nunavut, Canada’s northernmost province. Amaqqut Nunaat: The Country of Wolves is based on an Inuit legend about two brothers who get lost and wind up in a land ruled by Wolfpeople. The film paid homage to the storytelling culture of the Inuit people, who rely on these generation-spanning tales to connect with their ancestors. Appropriately enough, the next film of the block also paid homage to a culture of people in a remote location. Marovo Carver: Carvings from the Solomon Islands is a short documentary that gives the audience an inside look at the day-today life of a carver and his family in the South Pacific island chain.
The last short film of the block was a Holocaust film with a supernatural twist. If The Trees Could Talk was perhaps the most polished of the films. It featured a cast of terrific actors and impressive cinematography. It was the first film by Michael Weinstein, who wanted to make a film that honored those who lived through the Holocaust. The block was brought to a close by a feature-length documentary called Where Is Elle-Kari and What Happened to Noriko-san? This nostalgia-driven documentary followed the journey of an Israeli woman as she searched for the heroines of two popular children’s books from her childhood in Israel. In just two hours of screenings, a Monday afternoon audience was taken from Australia to Nunavut to the Solomon Islands to Japan, with plenty of stops in between. Each film was vastly different from the one that preceded it. Some showed signs of polished, veteran filmmaking and others relied on great stories to captivate the audience. The diversity of films being screened during the two-hour block served as a metaphor for why this festival is worth a trip for cinephiles.

Diary Of A Fat Man Sugar Is A Pennant Killer By Bruce Bernfeld
I’m not trying to horn in on whomever covers sports for this paper. But.....let’s begin this week by talking about Mark Teixeira. For those of you who are not big baseball fans, Teixeira is the first baseman for the NY Yankees and he is representing the Yanks in this year’s All Star Game. He is also in line for winning the Comeback of The Year award. Why should an All Star win the comeback award? Because he had two lousy seasons prior to this one in the past three. Check our Teixeira’s Home Run and RBI totals the past three years compared with this season, which is only half over: 2012 2013. 2014. 2015
-ARSHAL 3TEPHEN 7 "IEGEL 7 TH 3TREET 3UITE .EW 9ORK .9 /Fl CE -!23(!, &AX .9# MARSHALBIEGEL COM WWW .EW9ORK#ITY-ARSHAL COM

In fact his season totals so far in 2015 are the same as his totals for the entire 2014 season. And there is another half season to go! So what happened? How did Teixeira turn it around so quickly? I bet some of you have guessed where I’m going with this.... Yep, in one word....SUGAR!! In a recent interview, Teixeira attributed his success to eliminating sugar and junk food from his diet. Injuries have been a major part of his past two seasons and he began this season with a nutritionist advising him that a good diet can reduce inflammation throughout the body, which has been plaguing him, especially in his wrist. He also lost 15 pounds, and this is from a very muscular body, which is hard to do! Check out this lede from an article about Teixeira earlier this year in the Wall Street Journal: “Mark Teixeira’s PerformanceEnhancing Diet Desperate to stay healthy this season, Yankee first baseman embarks on a ‘no-fun’ food regimen
By DANIEL BARBARISI
Grab some spinach. Mix in berries, and of course the coconut yogurt. Blend. Now pick up a bat and go hit. Isn’t this what I’ve been preaching for the past few weeks right here? Listen to me; I’m a Yankee fan (and you Met fans can see what a bad diet can do to your team!! Injury upon injury... Oh, and a guy named Bernie Madoff, who I doubt is getting too many fruit and veggie smoothies where he is!) And remember, it’s the enemy you don’t see that is the most dangerous. Sugar in a yellow box is easy to avoid. However, sugar is in most processed foods, so check the labels!! Random Notes on This and That 1. The frozen drinks at the Tiki Bar in Silver Gull were six bucks this past Friday for guest day. DAMN !! 2. I got two pop-up ads on my iPhone screen his week. First one said, “Tequila can be part of a healthy diet and the second “Chocolate cake for breakfast may be good for you. Seriously. And... It seems amazing that they knew I was on a diet... THEY KNOW EVERYTHING!! 3. Finished my fifth week and it’s still relatively easy not really caring about what I eat, just as long as it’s healthy! 4. Getting to learn the VitaMix. Any good healthy recipes out there? Send them in. 5. And last but not least, I crossed a big one of my bucket list last week (a top ten entry). I was mentioned in Boyleing Points!!!

DOC News You Can Use By Peter Galvin, MD
This week I would like to update you about interesting information from several recently published studies. Firstly, anti-vaxers, as those who oppose childhood vaccinations are sometimes called, often mistakenly blame the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccinations as a cause of autism. Recently the Journal of the AMA (JAMA) published a large study from Drexel University, which studied the relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. Included in the study were children who had an older sibling who was diagnosed with an autism-spectrum disorder (ASD) or Asperger syndrome. These children are often thought to be at higher risk of developing ASD themselves. They studied the effects of the vaccine in close to 100,000 children. The children were privately insured and had older siblings. What they found was that administration of the MMR vaccine was not associated with an increased risk of ASD, even in children with an older sibling with ASD. Their findings concluded that there was no harmful association between MMR vaccine and ASD. Another study evaluated the use of oral insulin as a means of preventing the onset of Type I Diabetes Mellitus (insulin-dependant
or juvenile diabetes) in children. Using genetic testing it is now possible to identify infants who are at risk of developing Type I Diabetes. This study, which was a large multi-national study, evaluated the use of oral insulin, not as a means of treatment but as a means of stimulating the immune system to prevent the onset of diabetes in children aged 2-7. What was found was that oral insulin use did cause an immune system response without causing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This is very promising but more study is needed. It is becoming increasing clear that the “cure” for Type I Diabetes is primary prevention, meaning identifying those infants at risk and preventing the disease from ever happening. And the way to do that is to focus on preventing the immune system from producing antibodies that attack and destroy the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. More trials will be starting next year and there is much ongoing research. The answer could be no more than a few years away. Lastly, a study in the Annals of Internal Medicine evaluated the risk of using NSAIDs (i.e. Aleve, Motrin, and Advil) in patients taking blood thinners (Coumadin, Xarelto, etc.) for atrial fibrillation. By Artie Wallace One of the toughest DIYer projects you will come across is wood refinishing. No matter if it is an old chair, a coffee table or your cabinets, refinishing wood can be a scary project to take on. I don’t recommend people to start off with big projects. An old chair or an old table that you have laying around in the garage is a great way to try your skills out. The most important thing to remember about wood refinishing is the prep work. Without proper prep work your project will never look right. So, start off with a thorough cleaning. If needed, use a good home grade degreaser. Then make sure you have a smooth surface to work with. Sanding with an orbital sander is highly recommended, but don’t forget to fill any holes and cracks with a sandable wood filler first. Now you need to decide how you want to refinish your project. Most common ways are painting or staining. When painting be sure to use a furniture paint and apply with smooth light coats allowing to dry thoroughly between

coats. If you choose stain, that can be much easier. Apply the stain of your choice with a paintbrush and within a few seconds wipe with a clean cloth. Repeat ‘til you get the depth of the color you are looking for. Properly prepared wood will absorb the stain quickly and leaving it too long will cause different depths in the color throughout the project. So multiple thin coats are always best. Finally is the finish work. You can buy a clear coat in a spray can that will work well for small projects, just be sure to spray it lightly and use multiple coats. Caution, for the beginner small projects can be fun and a way to show your creativeness. Larger projects require years of experience to get it right and consistent color throughout the project. So don’t take on the big jobs yourself, it can cost you more in the long run to have someone come in and fix it if it doesn’t come out right. Is there a project you would like me to cover, email me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com and I would be happy to include it in a future article.

Patriotism and “Baseball’s Greatest Generation
Tom Brokaw’s excellent book “The Greatest Generation described the amazing bravery and sacrifices of America’s WWII generation in answering the call to save our nation and the world. Among those of “The Greatest Generation who served were over 500 baseball players. Of those, two were killed. many were wounded and all lost years from the prime of their baseball careers. Despite this 35 of those who served became Hall of Famers. Two of those, Warren Spahn and Bob Feller, even had careers that established them, in the opinion of many, as two of the best pitchers in modern day baseball. Warren Spahn, set to begin his Major League career, enlisted instead in the Army in 1942 and served until the end of the war in 1945. As a combat engineer over the next three years in Europe, he was awarded a battlefield commission, a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star. Spahn began his Major League career at the age of 25, and recorded 13 years with 20 or more wins and had a total of 363 victories overall. He won the most games of any left-handed pitcher in history and the most games of any pitcher in the post dead-ball era of baseball. Given these outstanding performances, it would appear that he certainly would have won 40 or more games had he not volunteered and served three years in the Army. That would have given him over 40 wins and moved him into second or third place in total victories even when you include the pitching greats who achieved their victories in the pitcher-friendly dead-ball era. (Cy Young had 511 victories and Walter Johnson had 417) Bob Feller enlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor when he was 23-years-old. He did so despite the fact that he had a deferment and would not be drafted. In the three years before the war, he won 76 games and struck out 767 batters. He served as a gun captain on the USS Alabama in combat for nearly four years, gaining five campaign ribbons and eight battle stars. In 1946, his first year back in the Majors, he won 26 games and struck out 348 batters. He won 266 games for his career but clearly would have added 90 to a 100 more wins to his total had he not spent those four years in military service. His readjusted victory total of approximately 360
would be the second highest total of victories by a pitcher in the modern day era - second only to Warren Spahn. The lives and careers of these two great pitchers are but a small part of the great fabric made up of the selfless contributions and sacrifices of the hundreds of Major League and thousands of Minor League players of that “Baseball’s Greatest Generation. Many of the names are familiar-DiMaggio, Reese, Rizzuto, Williams, Keller, Slaughter, Greenberg, Bauer, Hodges, Vernon, Coleman to name but a few. Many of their stories are riveting. Hank Greenberg, the famed slugger, was drafted in 1940; released from service on December 5, 1941 as being too old; and at age 31 reenlisted immediately after Pearl Harbor to serve in the Air Force for nearly four years. Ted Williams and Jerry Coleman served as Air Force pilots in combat both in WWII and Korea. Williams lost nearly five full seasons from his legendary career but still managed to hit 521 home runs with a lifetime batting average of .344 and 2,654 hits. Coleman also contributed nearly five full years to military service. After returning from combat, he was named Rookie of the Year in 1949. The following year he was an All-Star and named World Series MVP. His career would be interrupted for two more years through his service in Korea. Hank Bauer enlisted in the Marines a month after Pearl Harbor and served in the heaviest fighting in the Pacific earning eleven campaign ribbons, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. His Major League career was delayed four years. Indeed, it was a different age and a different world then, but you have to admire the fact that these men served out of a sense of duty and patriotism. They put their personal considerations aside and served without complaint because it was “the right thing to do. It is because of this, along with their athletic skills, that they have earned the right to be called “Baseball’s Greatest Generation, and deserve to be remembered with gratitude along with the countless others who have served and continue to serve in America’s armed forces at great sacrifice to themselves and their families. *(A major source for this article was the excellent work of Jeff Zillgitt “Speaking of Sports in USA Today)

Facts You Probably Don’t Need
☛The Nobel committee declined to award the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948 because “there was no suitable living candidate.” This was meant as a tribute to Mahatma Ghandi who had been assassinated earlier that year without receiving the prize.
One of our dedicated readers, Sean McVeigh, is a big fan of our “Facts” column. This week’s edition was submitted by Sean and he’s volunteered to keep submitting all summer. And that’s a fact. ☛☛☛ ☛Starbucks spends more on health insurance for its employees than on coffee beans. ☛The only coach of the University of Kansas Basketball team with a losing record is James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. ☛If Manhattan had as many people per square mile as Alaska, there would be 14 people in Manhattan.
☛Clement Vallandigham, a defense lawyer (who was also a congressman) in a murder trial accidentally shot himself and died while reenacting the possibility of a victim accidentally shooting and killing themselves instead of his client. The defendant was then set free. ☛Spiral staircases are historically built counter-clockwise going down so the Knights had the advantage of swinging their swords right-handed while defending a castle. ☛Some crosswalk buttons don’t do anything. They are called placebo buttons and are there to comfort people. ☛Citizens sent Ulysses S. Grant over 10,000 boxes of cigars as gratitude after winning the battle of Shiloh. He died of throat cancer in 1885.

ENJOY LIVE ART I had the pleasure of going to Shepherdstown, West Virginia this past weekend, to the Contemporary American Theater Festival to see the opening production of a close friend’s most recent play. Seeing, feeling, hearing, experiencing live art definitely feeds the mind, body and soul. This is another way of “being in the moment”. Watching a play, listening to a music concert, sharing the energy put forth by the artists in one space, moment by moment. It is a rest for all that is going on in the body – heart/mind – because the focus is on what is happening in that moment. If you let it happen, you can engage with the creation of what is happening right before you. All art forms can be viewed in this way – engaging, thinking, feeling, absorbing. By being in the moment, there is no thought of any stressful event or something to come. It is a diversion, but not in a passive way, i.e., “couch potato”, in an engaging way that enlivens the mind and heart, makes you think and feel. It is a refreshing respite from day-to-day life bringing along wellness and happiness: one, because while enjoying a live event, you forget about anything that causes stress in the body, heart or mind so you have temporary relief; two, you might learn something,
and three, you could have the opportunity of talking about your experience with others, thereby connecting and sharing thoughts and feelings about something you would not normally talk about in the day-to-day. In previous columns, we’ve talked about just being there in whatever you are doing or not doing – one thing at a time. Giving yourself the gift of seeing a play or listening to live music is another way to be in the moment – just being in that space for that short time and taking it in; sometimes thoughts may be provoked, other times feelings, but it is time for you to engage your personal spirit and enjoy. The words and sounds can stimulate/activate/spark the mind and heart promoting a feeling of contentment. Rockaway has many live performances during the summer whether it be at RAA or other venues. We are fortunate in our community to have such events; check out the listings in The Rockaway Times or online. “Act in the moment, live in the present, slowly slowly don’t allow the past to interfere, and you will be surprised that life is such an eternal wonder, such a mysterious phenomenon and such a great gift that one simply feels constantly in gratitude.” - Osho

Water Cooler: A Fortnight To Remember By Michael Leboff (Sports fans get up-to-date news from TV, blogs, and daily papers. We launched this column to help casual fans who may need to catch up so they can keep up at the water cooler.) There are few athletes that can claim they dominated their sport in the fashion that Serena Williams has tennis. On Saturday morning the Saginaw, Michigan native won her sixth Wimbledon title, defeating Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. Perhaps Serena’s best moment of the tournament came in a match against British starlet Heather Watson in the third round. Two different times Williams was just two points from being eliminated. The crowd was boisterously rooting against her as she fell three games down in the decisive third set. It looked like she just didn’t have it that day or maybe the crowd was getting to her. Then Williams, as she is apt to do, found another gear to fight back and move on. After defeating Watson, Williams rolled through the bracket (including a win over her sister, Venus) dropping only one set in her final five matches. Now Williams’ attention will turn to Queens where the 33-year-old will look to complete the calendar Grand Slam, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Steffi Graf did it 27 years ago, by winning the US Open. The younger Williams sister now has 21 major titles to her name, three behind Margaret Court for the most all-time. On the Men’s side, Novak Djokovic successfully defended his Wim-
Page 35

bledon title, taking down Roger Federer in four sets. Had it not been for a tough luck loss to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open finals, Djokovic could also be heading to Queens looking for a Grand Slam. On Monday night, Major League Baseball debuted its new Home Run Derby format to great feedback. The Derby, like many All-Star gimmicks, had grown stale in recent years and seemed to drag on deep into the night without remorse. There’s only so many times someone can listen to Chris Berman say “Back, back, back” without wanting to take a baseball bat to the TV. The new format pitted hitters against each other, giving each batter five minutes to hit as many dingers as possible. A few of the matchups proved to be pretty exciting and eventually Cincinnati Reds third baseman Todd Frazier delighted the home fans by defeating Dodgers’ rookie sensation Joc Pederson in the finals. The second half of the MLB season kicks off on Friday with the New York Yankees, in somewhat surprising fashion, leading the American League East by 3.5 games. The Mets, through the strength of their pitching staff, sit just two games back from Washington in the NL East and are one game out of the Wild Card. It remains to be seen if the team fancies itself a contender and will actually go out and make a move to better itself. Despite some mediocre play, the US Men’s National Team won their group in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Yanks, who were expected to win their group, will play their first knockout round match on Saturday evening.

Making My Surfing Debut By Sheneca Sharpe
Last month, I tried out paddle boarding, which was amazing! But I decided to take it up a notch with surfing. I was excited to share the experience with Locals Surf School, a surfing school located on Beach 67th right on the beach. Locals Surf School is dedicated to teaching kids and adults the fun of

surfing while learning basic skills. I assumed that surfing would be just like paddle boarding except without the paddle, boy was I wrong. Starting the lesson, I immediately had this slight confident attitude because I had some experience with paddleboarding, so I thought that the introduction wasn’t worth it and a waste of time. Kids, don’t make the same mistake I did. Pay attention when they give you a lesson and if you’ve had previous experience, it doesn’t matter, you still have more to learn. Another lesson I learned was to never assume or have false confidence with something new. You would think surfing is all about balancing on the board and once you get that, you’re solid. There are so many things involved when dealing with a 10-foot board, so much that if you were to give me a pop quiz on surfing 101, I’d probably pass. That’s how informative that land lesson was. My instructor, Kat, who was a longtime surfer before instructing students, was extremely patient with me and even with my little cocky attitude, she still took her time with me. Before testing out the waters, Kat gave me a mandatory land lesson explaining everything I needed
to know about surfing, even about how currents and the wind can affect the way you surf. As I said, there was a land lesson involved, which was around 30 minutes long, explaining the different terms of the board; where to “pop upâ€?, how to “pop upâ€?, and even how to cup your hands correctly when paddling for a wave. Finally, when it was time for me to attempt my first wave, I did everything correctly, I turned correctly, paddled correctly and popped up when Kat told me to and then‌ I fell. I fell four times, that definitely knocked my confidence down a notch for sure. But it was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. When I stood up for three seconds, it was the best, even though it was just for three seconds. I’ll be going off to college soon, so I can’t afford a surfboard at the moment, but I’ll definitely try to take up another lesson with Locals Surf School again‌ without the cocky attitude. I suggest to go to Locals Surf School this summer, take a lesson and fall in love with Rockaway beach all over again. You can contact somebody by going to their website at Localssurfschool.com or on the phone (347) 752-2728. (Sheneca is a recent graduate of Rockaway Park High School and will be attending SUNY-Fredonia in the fall).

Secrets Of Rockaway Hiding In Plain Sight Continued from page 11
JFK. It was a gorgeous summer day and not another person was seen in this green oasis. They say 8,700 people a year visit, which is not a lot but also seems like an exaggeration. In 2011 with New York State in a financial crisis, the park was closed. The state saved all of $5,500 by doing so. It’s open now and worth the trip (by bike or car). On the ocean side of Far Rockaway is a neighborhood of three or four blocks called Lawrence Cove, tucked away pretty much in the shadows of the Atlantic Beach Bridge. There’s a homeowner’s association that says the beaches are private. The beaches are small, and do look and feel like someone’s backyard, and the “private” signs on the fence make it seem…well, private,
so we’ll take their word for it. The neighborhood starts (or ends) at Beach 2nd Street, the very outer limits of New York City. There’s no Beach 1st Street. An abandoned marina marks the north side of this hamlet. You’ll even see a roundabout, like you’d see in Europe, for the little traffic there is. You can get there by bike or car by going down Seagirt Avenue (off Seagirt Blvd). It’s just a few blocks with nothing all that remarkable but you just might find yourself saying, “wow, this is part of New York City.” Although closer to the City, Rockaway Community Park is more remote than Lawrence Cove. Situated behind the Edgemere Houses is a mostly deserted park but worth a visit for a couple of reasons. The park is located next to a futuristic looking Sanitation Department building and adjacent to the old Edgemere
dump. Sound inviting, so far? Well, it is! The Edgmere Dump, now a nature preserve, is probably the highest point in Rockaway and offers a panoramic view like no other on the peninsula. Just don’t go there if the mosquitoes are hungry. The park, next door, is a wonderful woodsy place with a couple of piers that jut out from the park into the bay allowing for great views of the bay and JFK. You’ll see people fishing off these piers and sometimes see others doing the same on a long peninsula off Dubois Point on the other side of the channel. You can still find stacks of the old boardwalk stored here (The Parks Department probably doesn’t want to advertise this but this is a “secrets” article, after all). The gates were locked

Secrets Of Rockaway Hiding In Plain Sight Continued from page 42
last weekend but that shouldn’t deter an explorer. A secret boardwalk is another way into the park. Call upon your inner Lewis and Clark and make your way down Beach 54th Street towards Almeda Avenue. Venture onto the baseball diamond and head down the first base line. Keep going. Just past what would be foul territory down the right field line are two yellow posts that mark the beginning of a boardwalk into the hidden Rockaway Community Park. Pretty cool. Not far from Rockaway Community Park is the 59th Street marina. Some know this is more than a place with boats tied to creaking docks. You can check in with Truck-a-float and stay overnight in floating eco-pods. You might also find stand-up paddle boarders and kayakers doing their thing in calm waters oddly framed by urban reminders like school buses and public housing. Heading west you’ll have the chance to have a look at one of Rockaway’s overlooked neighborhoods: Arverne. It’s mostly residential so unless you know someone who lives there you’re likely to pass it on Beach Channel Drive without a second thought. But turn on Beach 62nd street past the Addabbo Center and make your way towards Bayfield Avenue. You’ll wind your way through quiet blocks and then come upon modest houses with million-dollar bay front views. Like the neighborhood of Lawrence Cove you’ll feel like you’ve discovered a place that no one knows about (except the lucky ones who live there). There’s a marina off Beach 72nd Street and Thursby Avenue. Maybe it won’t be a secret when rumors of a new bar restaurant come true. For now, it’s the road less trav-
eled back here, so much so that a firefighter driving the rig asked me for directions. He shouted out the window the name of the street, “Gouverneur?” Honest to God, I thought he shouted, “What are you doing here?” Before I could answer he found the street just up ahead. To be sure, a couple of places are worth an inspection between Arverne and Fort Tilden but that’s what follow-up articles are for. Fort Tilden. Everybody knows Fort Tilden. But nobody really knows Fort Tilden. Maybe some of the Park Rangers have it down but with the overgrowth of trees and plants there are more and more secret spots each season. You can climb to the top of Battery Harris and get a breathtaking view of New York Harbor. One spin around and you can see Long Beach, Brooklyn, The City, and New Jersey. You can veer off a path that leads to a fresh water pond and come upon a dune peppered with bullet shells from when the fort was an active military base. Kids used to call it Bullet Hill. Bunkers and supply huts can be found throughout the fort. Some were long buried until Sandy washed away their cover. Sandy revealed some lost treasures but wasn’t so kind to Shore Road. The mile-long road along the beachfront was upended by the storm and now only about a third of it remains. If you want to see the fort on the ocean side you’ve got to trek through the sand. Off the beach, paths and roads lead to all sorts of surprises. The remains of a Nike missile launch site, bunkers with tram tracks, and concrete buildings that could have had any number of uses are sprinkled throughout the park. They are

Bayhouse becoming harder to spot because nature is overtaking them. If you can find the heavy doors leading to a tunnel and wide supply room we put on the front page, you’re a Rockaway explorer par excellence. And while secret spots in Fort Tilden are never ending, there’s another secret place nearby in plain sight: Breezy Point. It’s a private community, so keep that in mind. If you live in an apartment, you wouldn’t like strangers walking through your hallways. They feel the same about their lanes and alleyways. But you can experience Breezy at the Bayhouse and Kennedy’s Restaurant. Kennedy’s is visible from the state road so it’s an easy find and easily among the finest places around. The Bayhouse, in temporary quarters until they start a rebuild in the fall, is at a beautiful spot right on the bay. It’s the first right turn past the security booth. But here’s the crucial tip: stop at the booth and get a token or pass. One more time: stop at
the guard house or booth and tell them where you’re going. You’ll get a token or pass and then be able to park in a visitor’s spot. If you’ve made a day of visiting these secret spots, ending up at Kennedy’s or the Bayhouse might just be a perfect ending. But it probably won’t be an end at all because you’ll want to explore the 4-wheel drive area at the very end of the peninsula. You’ll want to know about those bungalows that sit on the bay at Beach 85th street; you’ll want to take a bike on the path that runs under the Cross Bay bridge and runs behind Beach Channel High School. You’ll want to visit Riis Landing behind the old Coast Guard station across from Fort Tilden. Maybe you’ll go to the Breezy Point Surf Club for dinner because the bar/restaurant is open to the public after 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. Maybe you’ll turn on Beach 43rd and go all the way until the end. Before you know it, you’ll be saying did you know….

Riis Bazaar Makes A Bucket List People who live in or near Rockaway know that its reputation as a live music oasis is well earned through the terrific local bands that play here and its bars and venues, which know the right formula for putting together a great show. Rockaway’s music scene really comes alive in the summer, which is why it should be no surprise that the Riis Park Beach Bazaar is catching the ears of music fans all over. Recently the Beach Bazaar was featured by Mashable on their list of ‘Bucket List Worthy Music Festivals.’ The unique experience that Riis Park Beach Bazaar provides is what landed it on the list, which also includes festivals in Sweden, Croatia, and New Orleans. The wellread digital publication included Rockaway’s newest music-haven saying the Bazaar makes patrons “Feel like you’re on vacation without leaving the boroughs of New York City. And called it an “all-inone music, food, bar, and vendor experience. According to Belvy Klein, who heads the team in charge of the
Bazaar, things are off to such a great start for a variety of reasons. “It’s great bands and DJs, fantastic support from the community, killer food and really cool and creative vendors, Klein said of the Bazaar’s becoming a New York City must. “It all helps to create this really positive, fun vibe and scene. While the Beach Bazaar is beginning to attract wide acclaim, Klein says that the local feedback continues to be very positive. “The thing I probably hear the most is how stoked the kids are now that there’s concerts and something to do and look forward to every week, he said of the local reviews. “The amount of ‘thank you’s’ and ‘we really needed this - keep it up guys!’ is really awesome and humbling at times. From the beginning it was important to the team to honor the local tradition in Rockaway. Several members of the Bazaar’s core management team have ties to the community. But now that they are working here everyday, Klein says he’s grown even fonder of the place. “Working here and being here everyday definitely gives you

Every Friday night the Bazaar puts on Reckouwacky, which features local bands and DJs. Even with all of the positive feedback, Klein believes the party is just getting started. “We really feel like we’re just starting to hit our stride and are psyched to be extending the Riis Park Beach Bazaar season through the end of September.

an appreciation of the peninsula and the people. Of course things weren’t always that easy. After it was announced that the team from Brooklyn Night Bazaar was selected by NYC Parks to develop programming for Riis Park, they met some resistance from some local sects. “A few people had this ridiculous, warped misconception that we were this terrible, giant ‘beach destroying corporate monster’ hellbent on ruining people’s lives and their beaches. Klein explained of the early backlash. “That was always the furthest thing from the truth and now that people see it first

Rockaway Little League All Star Action Recap The Rockaway Little League (RLL) Major Boys All-Star team defeated Ozone Howard Little League (OHLL) twice last week to claim the District 27 Championship for the fourth consecutive year. It was not an easy road. Rockaway lost to OHLL in the second game of the tournament, meaning Rockaway had to survive the loser’s bracket and then defeat OHLL twice on their home turf in the final round. Ozone Howard only needed one win to dethrone Rockaway. On Thursday, Rockaway prevailed 5-3. In Friday’s winner-take-all match, Rockaway broke open a tight game late to clinch the championship with a 7-3 victory. RLL will now represent District 27 in the Sectional Championships in hopes of advancing toward the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Rockaway’s Minor Boys team finished second in their tournament. Like our older team, the Minors needed to score two victories against OHLL. They won the first 9-5 but fell in the finale. RLL’s Minor Girls team began their tournament last Saturday, also against Ozone Howard.
AHOY ROCKAWAY ! By Matt Whalen Water temperature: 82*F Broad Channel (100’ N. of Shad Creek Association on Cross Bay Blvd) This weekend gave us a good spin on the weather. Saturday was hazy, hot and humid with scattered showers. Sunday was cooler and drier, but still seasonably warm. Some “windy” conditions helped keep it somewhat “tolerable” to be outside fishing. July can sometimes be so warm and humid, that it just becomes too uncomfortable for anyone, but the most die hard of anglers will be out fishing from a boat or dock on the bay (inside). The surf-casting angler often has a nice wind to keep him cool (or prevent him from casting his hook out there in the surf). Water temperature samples were taken this week at slack low tide. Healthy, dark green colored marine plants growing along the bottom of the bay, (accompanied with low water levels) contributed to the warmer water temperature samples taken this week. Cooler water temperatures can be expected closer to the ocean, as well as along the beach (outside). It’s mid-summer so enjoy it while it lasts. We checked in with our local stations this week and here’s what they had to tell us:
Bernie Matzen of Oceanside: Bernie was drifting the Atlantic
Beach Bridge area (inside) east of Beach 8th Street. Bern has found some “Super Double Secret” fishing spots over the years and won’t say exactly where he caught the fish, but there was a haul of three fluke, two fluke at 19” and one fluke at 24”. High stick was “Kenny Albrecht.” On Sunday, Bernie caught two short fluke and a tiny sea robin. Back they went into the bay.
Big Ron’s bait and tackle in Howard Beach: We spoke with “Dawn” at Big Ron’s and she told us that there are fluke still being caught on a consistent basis all over the bay. There are short fluke that are “typical” for this time of year. Besides, it’s difficult to top that GIANT bass that “Leron” caught last week pushing the scale at “Ron’s” to touch 47 LBS. YIKES !
Tom’s Wave service station and “Bait and Tackle” on B.C.D. in Rockaway Park:
We gave Tom a call this week and he had some exciting news about a large 10.5-lb fluke caught this week. There was also and eight pound fluke, and a three pound sea robin (that’s a big sea robin). The fish were caught on the “Inside” (bay). Tom said that the fluke action is “Good” with about one out
of five fluke taken being a “keeper.” Tom reports “Porgies” are now showing up at the “Sea Wall,” and are accepting offerings of worms. Bunker are still being sold, so we know that the hunt is still on for the BIG BASS that lay in wait just off of Rockaway. Well that’s it Rockaway anglers, until next week. Let’s remember to throw the “small ones” back, especially if it’s “questionable.” Remember that the “Rockaway Angler” is the truest definition of a “sportsman.” There’s a certain degree of self “HONOR” in that, let’s keep it that way. New For Local Runners: The Triple Crown July is here and so is a series of 5k runs on Friday evenings. The new BCAC Shamrock Shuffle, taking place between the Kevin Kearney Memorial Rockapulco Run and the Graybeards Family Run, created the opportunity for cooperative action, resulting in the institution of the Rockaway Racing Summer Triple Crown. The Rockapulco Run kicks things off this Friday July 17 with a 5k course along the Shore Front Parkway path beginning and ending at Beach 95th Street. The new BCAC Shamrock Shuffle follows on Friday July 24 with a 3 mile course through Broad Channel beginning and ending at BCAC Memorial Field. The series concludes with the Graybeards Family Run through Belle Harbor and Neponsit, on Friday July 31, beginning and ending at St. Francis de Sales. Traditionally a 5k run, the course will once again be an abbreviated 4k until the boardwalk reconstruction is complete. The awards ceremony for the Family Run will include the new Triple Crown, awarded to the male and female runners with the fastest combined time for all three races. BCAC Shamrock Shuffle Director Jonathan Walters will present the male Triple Crown and Rockapulco Run director John Edwards will present the female Triple Crown. Graybeards Family Run directors Keith Goldberg and Joe Featherston will present the championship plates to the winners of the races that evening. It is hoped that the Triple Crown will create greater interest and excitement in the three races and lead to greater participation from the additional incentive. For information about the Rockapulco Run go to www. rockapulcorun.com. For the BCAC Shamrock Run, you can also register at www.rockapulcorun.com or go to www.bcacshamrocks.weebly.com.
