Atticus is Found!
After a more than week’s long search, Atticus the cat has been reunited with his owner Lizzy Land. Lizzy spent several days hanging posters, posting to social media and
even advertising in the Rockaway Times to find her beloved furry friend who went missing from Beach 135th Street on July 3. We’re thrilled to report a happy ending for Lizzy and Atticus. According to Land, someone from Beach 145th Street called to say they had Atticus and she got her cat back on Tuesday, July 14. “We cannot tell you how happy and how relieved we are. Thank you endlessly for all of your help, your shares and prayers, and kind words, calls and texts. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Our boy is home,” she said. The news was shared on Facebook page Friends of Rockaway Beach, and within 12 hours, the post was “liked” more than 1,300 times and flooded with comments of joy over the good news.

Free Food Fridge Comes to Arverne
A community fridge of free food is now available to those who need it. Free food fridges are popping up across the city and country during the coronavirus pandemic. Now Rockaway has its own at 69-62 Almeda Avenue, outside of The Almeda Club. The fridge is available 24/7 and anyone is welcome to take what they need. The fridge is made possible by the Rockaway Mutual Aid and Support Network and others. There are also plans to build a pantry next to it for
food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. All are welcome to contribute to the fridge, including restaurants, bakeries and delis that may have excess supplies. The Campaign Against Hunger recently helped stock the fridge as well as some local business owners. If you’d like to donate, reach out to the Rockaway Mutual Aid and Support Network by calling 732-645-2502 or emailing rockawaymutualaid@gmail. com

Rockaway Caribe
By Lou Pastina
The spectacular picture taken by Robbie Ostrander gracing the front cover of The Rockaway Times last week only confirms what every Rockaway resident can testify to: that the water in and around Rockaway is out of this world. The drone photo seems to show a huge sand bar just outside of the main tide, creating this patch of crystal blue aquamarine tropically- warmed ocean for us all to enjoy. And if you have had the pleasure of staring at this in real time, it’s just magical. Not to mention that dipping one’s toes into the ocean is akin to stepping into the pool of the movie Cocoon which provided regenerative health benefits to the swimmers. I am hoping that this is a by-product of a quaran-
tine-induced halt on ocean, plane and car travel, healing our earth and cleaning our air and waters. It seems to make sense that is the reason, although my mermaid editor believes I should actually do some research to confirm my unresearched hunches. But who has time for that? I’d rather just tweet whatever came into my head! And speaking of whatever came into my head, I am trying to figure out where all these blowfish or pufferfish are coming from? Wikipedia says that Northern puffer is indigenous to our parts, but I have never seen them before, and now every walk I take on the beach, I pass them by on shore. I am told by a longtime Rockawayite and fisherman that they have always been here, so why am I surprised. Wiki calls them the “chicken of the sea” as they are supposed to be a delicacy, but I don’t see any seagulls trying them! And how about all the
washed-up sand sharks? Are fisherman hooking them and then simply letting them die on shore? I’m not a fan of sharks, but hey, I think those guys aren’t going to hurt anyone, so give them a break and throw them back, will ya? Although I didn’t feel the same about the 7-foot Thresher shark with the two-foot tail, holy mackerel! Where did he come from, I asked myself? And then I was told that there were much bigger guys out there, and they won’t bother you. Yeah right! I think about that photo with the sand bar and then I think it’s nothing but a buffet setting for our seagoing friends!! And while I’m at it, it seems to me that this time last year everyday brought another pod of passing dolphins with a whale or two following them. This year I have been hard pressed to see one dolphin. Now many people have told me that they have seen our mammalian swimming friends, but I haven’t! Is that
sand bar keeping them out? Are the sharks there instead, or maybe it’s those damn puffer fishes hogging up the territory? Well, one thing for sure is that the water definitely appears cleaner. At least it appears that way. I mean, you can see your feet when you are chest high in water just like the Caribbean. Only problem with that is, you can see everything else too! And I would rather not see anything else, trust me. Of course, you can’t trust your eyes these days, I’m just waiting for some genius scientist to tell us that the virus can be carried through water, wouldn’t that be just dandy. Well whatever they say, it’s summer finally, and we have passed the half-way point, which means the best part of summer is coming up. The water is clear, clean, full of life and warm so enjoy. Now all you need to do is find a bit of sand six feet from anyone else. Good luck with that!

Respect Rockaway Returns
Respect Rockaway. That’s the main message of a campaign that aims to encourage visitors to protect our beach and to respect the power of the ocean, so that all can have an enjoyable time here. The Respect Rockaway campaign launched in 2019 with aims to heighten awareness for ocean conservation and promote general beach and water safety for residents and visitors to the beaches of Rockaway. Now it’s back, and even better with a partnership between Surfrider Foundation NYC (Surfrider NYC) and the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Park Conservancy (JBRPC) uniting the conservation efforts of Rockaway Beach and neighboring Jamaica Bay! The Respect Rockaway and Respect Jamaica Bay messaging serve as reminders to make a dedicated effort to protect and respect the community, natural resources and ourselves through environmental stewardship and responsible action. Through raising awareness of these critical issues, Surfrider NYC and the JBRPC hope to engage the community and create a positive impact that lives beyond the summer. Rolling out through July and August, the campaign will be visible throughout NYC at JFK Airport and Airtrain, LaGuardia Airport, select PATH locations, the fleet of NYC Ferries, MTA bus stops, along the Rockaway boardwalk and throughout Rockaway-based NYC Parks. Surfrider NYC and the JBRPC will also be collaborating with local businesses, elected officials and community groups to increase the campaign footprint along the Rockaway peninsula and throughout Jamaica Bay. The campaign was made possible by Selman, a creative studio based in New York City with ties to the Rockaway area. Founder Johnny Selman first heard about the Surfrider Foundation while following Patagonia Action Works, and then attended Surfrider’s meetings at Patagonia Bowery. In learning about how much Surfrider was doing for his community, Selman reached out to the volunteer-based network to see how his design stu-
dio can help. “The identity and messaging system reflects the voice of the Rockaway commu-
nity and embodies the campaign mission in a bright and engaging way. Expressive rippling type and a colorful palette informs locals and visitors alike to “Protect the Beach”, “Hold Your Butts” and “Talk Some Trash” among other messages” he says of the campaign. “It’s all about how small acts of respect have a much larger impact. By respecting Rockaway, you’re respecting the community, the environment and yourself.” Nikita Scott, Chair of Surfrider NYC says “In light of the environmental threats Rockaway faces and the unfortunate drowning incidents that occurred over the last few years, we urge everyone to take our messages to heart and adopt behaviors to Respect Rockaway/Respect Jamaica Bay.” Shanna Blanchard, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Projects of the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy says “Rockaway and Jamaica Bay hold some of the most ecologically diverse public spaces in NYC that simultaneously provide prime recreational opportunities, especially in the summer months. We hope the campaign encourages New Yorkers and visitors to discover our parks and shores and to be respectful of the many local communities sharing their parks with visitors, along with unique plants and wildlife that call these parks and shores home.” Other campaign agency partners currently include the Metropolitan Transit Authority, NYC Ferry, NYC Parks, NY State Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The Respect campaign is generously supported in part by Patagonia. For more information visit respect.nyc

Low Tide Post Sparks Controversy A post making the rounds on various social media has caused controversy throughout Rockaway. During the Saturday, July 11 march to support the NYPD, Low Tide Bar, a vendor in the Beach 97th concession, posted a video to their Instagram Story of marchers holding flags as they passed by the concession, with the caption “Racists in our community here they are.” High97, a food vendor in the Beach 97th concession, also posted video to Instagram, saying “The racists have arrived.” Within a few minutes, the posts were removed from both pages. However, some caught screenshots of the videos, which were quickly shared around community social media pages. The Rockaway Times received many calls and
emails from people who were upset by the businesses labeling marchers as racist. Some have also called for boycotts of the businesses. Others have taken to social media to show support for Low Tide and have planned to hold Black Lives Matter events at the concession to stand in solidarity with them. The Rockaway Times reached out to both Low Tide and High97 through Instagram, asking for comment on why the posts were made. As we
go to press, High97 did not respond. Low Tide responded, saying they were working on a statement, but did not provide a response by press time. These postings came a week after another controversy surrounding a post made by Low Tide on July 4, of a photo of a Black Lives Matter message taped over an American flag with black duct tape. The photo was captioned, “It’s been a hard year for us all. Today let us not forget to honor those who came before, those who have had to fight for their freedom and those who are still fighting for true justice. Today; let us come together to protect each other, to shout out when we witness injustice, to swim, surf and enjoy the sun, to dance and love each other everyday. Happy 4th of July. Come see us, we miss you.” The
post received support and backlash, which ultimately resulted in Low Tide disabling comments on the Instagram post. During Saturday’s NYPD march, the group was met by a few individuals holding signs to support BLM. The NYPD marchers stopped in front of Low Tide for a few moments, singing “God Bless America” and chanting U.S.A. There have been responses to both incidents from two extremes. Some have taken a middle-road approach. One response online read: "Can we all take a breath for a minute please. People's emotions are high at the moment, but we don't have to retreat into opposing corners. There's a middle ground here, and Low tide did quickly take down their comment when maybe they
realized that tarring all the marchers with the same brush wasn't helpful. There are some extremists in Rockaway on either side of the current debate. The debate isn't really pro cop versus anti cop. It's pro equality and anti-brutality, and I believe that most of the NYPD and Rockaways businesses are on that bandwagon.”

***** You know what we say in the newspaper business: Damned if we do, damned if we don’t. ***** A very large crowd, maybe three or four thousand people, walked from Beach 121st Street on the boardwalk to the 100th Precinct last Saturday in a show of support for the NYPD. It was a peaceful march that got little coverage in the main media. One reason, we’d guess, is that few in the media thought the crowd would be that large. At one point, the marchers were met by some with opposing or alternate messages but most of the exchanges did not escalate and peace was maintained. ***** The Low Tide concession at Beach 97th Street posted a photo of marchers with the caption: Racists in our community here they come. It was soon taken
down. Broad brush statements lack nuance and often do more harm than good. And that goes both ways. We encourage learning and dialogue but even that might be considered controversial these days. ***** The crowd on the boardwalk wasn’t the only notable crowd last weekend. We posted a photo of the traffic and we think every bike advocate in the city commented. ***** Liz Hanna took it upon herself to start a Facebook page, RBNY Rockaway Businesses Need You. He’ll be hosting a 30-minute lecture/discussion series in the schoolyard starting at 8 a.m., beginning Monday, July 20. The award-winning history student will be passing on his knowledge starting with Pre-Columbian World History to the present day. ***** We asked the Parks Department about crowd sizes this summer because the beaches do seem packed. GrindTime Skate Shop Rolls into Rockaway By Katie McFadden
A new skate shop has rolled into town. There’s no doubt that surfing is a big activity in Rockaway. But surfboards aren’t the only boards being used in Rockaway. Skateboarding has become an alternative for many to get around town and new skate shop, GrindTime Skate Shop, aims to meet the needs for longtime skateboarders and those who are interested in joining the sport. GrindTime, located at 90-20 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, is Rockaway’s first skateboard shop. A sister shop to nearby surf shop Station RBNY, GrindTime is owned by longtime skaters Ernie Herrera and Serena Paul. From boards to trucks to wheels, pads and even skate shoes and apparel, the new shop has everything skaters need, saving them a trip off the peninsula. The shop also provides private lessons to those who want to learn how to ride, plus they even offer board repairs. They also hope to have events from skate competitions at Rockaway’s skate parks to having experts come for visits and workshops, although some of those things are still up in the air due to coronavirus restrictions. Like many businesses, coronavirus threw Herrera and Paul for a loop. They first debuted the business in December 2019, giving people a preview of what they offer over the holiday season. They were then planning to launch in their full space in March, but coronavirus delayed that opening, so they stuck with online sales. Now with retail businesses able to operate with in-store customers, while following coronavirus guidelines, GrindTime opened back up in June and is serving the skate community. Herrera and Paul both learned to skateboard as kids and quickly fell in love with it. “I love the freedom, the expression, the creativity, the alternative to explore neighborhoods in a different way,” Herrera said. “There wasn’t much to do growing up, so I found skateboarding to be a good option. With everything going on in the world and all of the violence, skateboarding was an alternative to get away and get out of bad neighborhoods. It’s an escape to
somewhere more peaceful, and a decent way to commute around Rockaway.” For Paul, it’s about the connections with a diverse community of skaters that come with the sport. “I love the community that comes together for skating,” Paul said. “It’s all different people from all different cultures and they just love the sport and put their passion into it. There are different styles of skateboarding and it’s for everyone.” Now they hope to share that love for the sport with the community. While both worked at surf shop, Station RBNY, Herrera and Paul noticed that an outlet for skaters was lacking in a community with multiple skate parks. “I grew up surfing, but I have more of a passion for skateboarding, and skateboarding has its dedicated place in Rockaway being that there’s three parks, with the third being rebuilt. There’s a bunch of surf shops here but nothing dedicated to skateboarding and we thought maybe it was time to give it a bigger space and outlet,” Herrera said. “It’s something different for the community. People had to go off the peninsula to find stuff they need for skateboarding, so we wanted to bring something to the community so skaters could have a home and so we can grow interest in skating,” Paul added. With customers now coming from

Long Island, Brooklyn and mainland Queens, GrindTime has filled a longtime need for those in the local skate community and beyond. With a dedicated skate shop in town, those at GrindTime hope to expand interest in the sport across the peninsula. “We want to give people a new outlet and something to do. It’s not just tricks on a board. There are many ways to enjoy skateboarding and we want to show people that,” Herrera said. “I’m all for encouraging more girl skaters and trying to link up with other girl groups and getting girls outside. It’s not just a boy’s sport anymore. We’re trying to introduce them to different styles. There’s carving, freeboarding, cruising, dancing on the board, there’s something for everyone,” Paul said. “It’s also a good way to get people back outside. With all this technology, TV and cell phones taking over, we need to ride again and play outside. Nature is here, why not go out and see what it has to offer while exploring on a board?” Paul said. To help achieve that, GrindTime offers lessons to those interested getting into skateboarding. Currently they offer private lessons but plan to do more in the future when coronavirus restrictions ease, including offering skate camps, or even partnering with
Station RBNY to offer skate and surf camps. Through lessons, Herrera and Paul hope to help those interested in skateboarding overcome any fears about the sport. “People have this misconception of how dangerous it is, but it’s like everything else. You can fall, scrape your knees, but it’s all part of the sport,” she said. “Everyone is going to fall, but that’s one fear you have to unlock, knowing that it’s gonna happen,” Herrera said. “That’s why we start with the basics like how to push, how to balance, how to maneuver the board, and just giving people a sense of what they need to do to enjoy it more." GrindTime comes ahead of the highly-anticipated completion of the Rockaway Beach Skate Park on Beach 91st Street. The revamped park is expected to be complete by the end of the year and GrindTime hopes to partner with NYC Parks for its grand opening. In the meantime, GrindTime is here for all skaters' needs. GrindTime Skate Shop is open seven days a week, from noon until about 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. They can be reached at 347-752-9599. St. John’s Exec Receives Honor St. John’s Episcopal Hospital (SJEH) announced that Terri Coyle, Vice President of Behavioral Health, is the recipient of the United Hospital Fund’s (UHF) Excellence in Health Care Award. The recognition signifies the enhancements in quality of care, patient safety, and patient experience that have taken place at SJEH since Jerry Walsh took the helm as Chief Executive Officer in mid2015. Under Coyle’s leadership of the Behavioral Health department, the hospital has seen the readmission rates of adult behavioral health patients admitted for the same condition as a previous admission drop significantly, as well as an improvement in patient satisfaction. Recently, Coyle created a free virtual support group via Zoom in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The support groups, led by facilitators, provided similar
support in the Rockaways after 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, and focus on different types of emotional support including coping with grief, loss, stress, and anxiety. In addition to the recognition from UHF, the hospital is ranked as High Performing in Heart Failure by US News & World Report, and is the recipient of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award and the organization’s Heart Failure Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. SJEH has also recently earned Baby-Friendly Hospital designation through the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI)–a global program led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to promote practices that protect and support breastfeeding.

Rockaway Shows Support for the NYPD On Saturday, July 11, the Rockaway boardwalk was a sea of American and blue line flags as locals from Rockaway and Breezy Point gathered for a march to show support for the New York City Police Department. The march kicked off on Beach 121st Street with the playing of the National Anthem. An estimate 3,000 people joined in for the march, which expanded for several blocks. Many held flags or signs, or wore shirts showing
support for the police. On foot and bike, the marchers paraded down the boardwalk to the 100th Precinct, where they were met with a group of protestors supporting Black Lives Matter. Throughout the march, no speeches were given at the event that was advertised as a “no political agenda” show of support for law enforcement. Sending A Different Message
Some protestors at Saturday’s march to support the NYPD, had a different message. Throughout the march, participants were met with groups of protestors supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and messages of anti-police brutality. The first met the group at the beginning of the march before it began. As the march continued, they were met by a group of protestors who held signs and formed a line across the boardwalk near Beach 100th Street. One woman from the group approached the crowd alone with a sign saying, “All lives can’t matter until Black Lives Matter,” until she slowly backed up and joined the line of fellow protestors. As the NYPD marchers approached, they walked through the line of protestors. The march was then met by another group in front of the Beach 97th Concession, many of whom were sitting on the ground as the marchers
stopped in front of the concession for a few minutes to sing “God Bless America” as the concession blasted a theme song from Star Wars. At the 100th Precinct, the march was met by a larger group of protestors. The two groups clashed in a shouting match across Rockaway Beach Boulevard as they both chanted and attempted to express their various viewpoints. Photos by Katie McFadden.

Ferry Gripes Dear Editor: HELP!!! I hate to speak poorly of a great service but our beloved NYC Ferry, specifically the Rockaway Route, needs to do a better job with customer service and helping Rockaway commuters. Since the boats have been in operation and always in Summer, myself and many other commuters are stranded and left behind on the dock during the work week. These are all Rockaway locals just trying to get home after a long day at work. We end up either waiting another hour (at best) or running up Fulton St and grabbing the dreaded A train. Now don’t get me wrong, I love that all these folks from the city want to come to our awesome beach, spend some cash and help local businesses but there
has to be a better way. Today, Tuesday, July 14, NYC Ferry was using the smaller boats on a perfect beach day and also did not add extra boats for the overflow. With Rockaway locals having the longest commute in NYC, which the ferry was supposed to help, NYC Ferry should be doing more. A few ideas that may help. 1. Somehow give locals priority boarding. 2. Run the bigger boats for the Rockaway Route. 3. During peak times in summer (any sunny/hot day 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) run more boats. Again, I love this service and want to see it be successful, but I also want to be able to get home on it without getting there an hour early or being left on the dock. I’ve contacted NYC Ferry but it falls on reluctant ears, hence the reason I write to the good people of the Rockaway Times for help. No DFD’s where harmed during the drafting of this letter. John T. Kennedy

Khaleel Anderson Leads Assembly Race
As first reported in the Queens Daily Eagle, Khaleel Anderson has a solid lead in the Assembly District 31 race after an absentee ballot conducted on Tuesday, July 14 and is now the likely nominee for the upcoming general election November. According to an online post by Anderson, he held a 2,888 vote lead over another candidate, Richard David. Nothing is official until the Board of Elections certifies the final tally. With the district
being overwhelmingly Democratic, Anderson is expected to win in the general election in November. At 24, he will be the state’s youngest assemblyman. Anderson, well known in Rockaway for his leadership with the Rockaway Youth Task Force, is a member of Community Board 14. Anderson is also backed by the Working Families Party. He has been an organizer and leader in local Black Live Matter rallies and events.

Boomer Planning GETTING THINGS IN ORDER
By Nancy J. Brady, RN, Esq., Brady & Bader LLP, Attorneys at Law
Spending time at home the past few months has resulted in many people getting their “house in order.” At our house, we have been cleaning out old files, and deciding what to shred, and what to keep. For me, this dreaded task has been spurred in part by the local free shredding event taking place this month at our local bank. While it is important to debride the file cabinets for space and orderliness, it is important NOT to discard documents you may need in the future. As elderlaw attorneys we often make recommendations to our clients as to what documents should be kept, and what can be shredded and discarded. In addition to keeping a list ready for your loved ones with important numbers such as your doctor, insurance company, passwords to your computer if needed, alternate numbers for family members, and the location of your important papers, the following is a summary of what we recommend you keep in your files. To begin with, since you most likely have recently met with your accountant, we recommend keeping the prior five years of tax returns, with accompanying documentation. So, this is 2020- you should keep returns for 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015. Having these returns available becomes important should you become ill and need to provide documentation of your finances for medical benefits eligibility. Each year you do your taxes, you can discard the oldest return. All financial statement for the past sixty months: Since this is July, you should keep all pages of all statements for any accounts you had ownership interest in (even if closed) from July 2015 through now. It is not necessary to keep them
stapled together, just keep all the pages – even if they are blank pages- and keep all copies of checks – especially checks over $2000.00. As with the taxes, each year you can discard the oldest 12 months. Every year when you receive your updated income information from Social Security or your pension, keep those statements. You will only need to keep the most recent year for those statements. Savings bonds: Keep these in a safe place. You should look up the value of these periodically, on the U.S. Treasury website (www.treasurydirect.gov). Each year you should ask your accountant what to cash out, since the income is taxable the accountant can provide good advice regarding how much or how little you should cash without affecting your income for taxes too greatly. Stock certificates: If you hold original stock certificates consider transferring them to a brokerage account. This will make it much easier to transfer or cash out stock if the need arises and will avoid the issues that arise with lost stock certificates. Stock and lease to cooperative: Keep the originals in a safe place and make a set of copies and keep in a different place. Deed homeowners and

flood policies: Living where we live, most of us have had firsthand experience with having to have these documents handy after Hurricane Sandy, keep a set of copies separate from your originals, on your computer or with a family member. Title to your motor vehicles and insurance information: Keep originals in one place and set of copies in another. Personal documents to keep include birth certificates, baptismal certificates, passports, even if expired, photo ID- drivers or non-driver’s license. You should keep marriage certificates, spouse’s death certificate, divorce decree. Military discharge papers should also be kept. It is advisable to make copies of each of these documents and keep the originals in a safe place and the copies in a different place, on your computer, or give to one of your children to hold. Funeral Plans: Make a set of copies, give one set to your loved one, and keep a set in your files at home. Health insurance cards, credit cards, list of important phone numbers: Again, make copies of all, keep originals in your wallet, and keep set of copies in your files, and perhaps give another set to your loved ones. Basic estate planning docu-
ments: You should keep your original Health Care Proxy, Power of Attorney and Last Will and Testament in a safe place. Let your agents/representatives named on these documents know where you keep the originals and give them a set of copies. Do not ever write on any of these documents, and never unstaple the Will. You need to review these documents regularly to make sure there are no changes you want to make, or if any circumstances in your family change- (births, deaths, family members’ illness or disability) to make sure your documents accurately represent your intentions for the changed circumstances. In conclusion, while none of us want to be overrun with papers, it is important to have certain papers in your possession, particularly in an emergency situation. You should tell your trusted loved ones where your important papers are, and where applicable give them a set of copies. Some people take the extra step and keep a “go bag” ready with insurance papers, deeds, credit and debit cards, financial information, health insurance information, and estate planning documents as well. Happy shredding! Nancy J. Brady is a partner in the law firm Brady & Bader LLP Attorneys at Law. The attorneys can be reached at 1-718-945-7777. The office is open by appointment and we are taking all steps necessary in light of the pandemic to maintain a safe environment.

RISE Working And Seeking Some Help By Jeanne Dupont
Summer is in full swing and it looks a little different in 2020. This year, all of our programs are continuing remotely. We have our students working on a series of exciting projects. The high schoolers in our Environmentor internship program are busy analyzing bat and bird sound data, while our Shore Corps interns are working to make a documentary focused on their experiences during the pandemic. Both groups are also participating in art workshops led by the winners of the Art Underneath the Elevated initiative. As part of this initiative, RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) commissioned artists to produce temporary public art installations underneath or adjacent to the elevated A-train. Ten Twenty-Nine Twelve, by Anthony Heinz May, is already up at Beach 60th Street and Rockaway Beach Blvd. Sonic Constellation, by Camila Morales and Dominika Ksel will be installed
later this year. In response to the rising food insecurity due to the current economic crisis, we successfully expanded the Farm Share to serve one hundred families. Seventy-five percent of participants will be receiving a share of locally grown organic vegetables every week from now until November. We’d like to give a special thank you to the team of local residents who help us distribute produce

every week. Although we are grateful to have the farm share and our youth programs up and running, the pandemic and economic crisis are far from over. The level of need in Rockaway, as one of the hardest hit areas in all of New York City, continues to grow. But, at the same time, the City budget is being cut drastically, imperiling much of our work. At this critical moment, RISE is
launching a campaign to raise funds to support our unique programming. We hope that you will help us to continue our vital work in this underserved community. We need your support, now more than ever, to continue our essential programs. To help, please go to RiseRockaway.org. Do You Speak Insurance? By John Lepore
When I was in high school, in what is now called the middle ages, my school offered a variety of languages for students to choose. The choices were pretty typical: Spanish, French, Italian, Russian and Latin. I thought Latin was always a curious choice unless you wanted to be a doctor, pharmacist, priest, lawyer or read Virgil in the vernacular so none of those were really appealing. To me, there was no good reason for Latin’s existence as the society that created it was gone for over a millennia and English was working for me just fine, thank you. It was frustrating and confusing and made no sense. Then I went to work in insurance. Because insurance policies are basically just contracts, they have to be specific and that means that lawyers need to carefully craft the language. The problem is that most people aren’t lawyers and this is where the fun begins. You would think that being written in English would make it easy and understandable, right? The fact that it is written in your native tongue and you still don’t understand makes it more frustrating and aggravating. What happens next is that people latch on to a word or phrase and then distort and redefine them in ways that have nothing to do with the original meaning. In honor of all those people and their misinterpretations, here are two
of my favorites: No Fault: Now if I wanted to combine two words to create the maximum confusion and misunderstanding possible, I would be hard pressed to surpass this dynamic duo. I can’t begin to tell you how many people call to report a claim and start with something like this. “I just drove through someone’s living room with my car and destroyed everything in its path but I don’t have anything to worry about because I have No Fault, right?” Duh, no. The geniuses who passed the law (hmm, lawyers again) that created this monster only intended to make it simpler to get injuries sustained in an auto accident taken care of more quickly without having to go to court and prove fault. Before this law was passed, someone injured in an auto accident could literally wait for years for a court date and a determination of who was at fault ‘til the insurance companies could sort things out and the injured party could be paid for treatment. It was best for all concerned to proceed with no fault (get it?) determined to get quicker medical help, empty court dockets and reduce expenses that would ultimately translate into higher insurance costs. Most states that have this provision now simply call it by the more appropriate Personal Injury Protection (PIP) but old habits die hard. Full Coverage: Another linguistic all-star is the idea of that there is something out

there in the insurance universe that is called Full Coverage. Hit the brakes folks, think for a moment what that might mean. Full coverage would imply that every potential peril regardless of cause would be covered fully. In effect, that would be infinite coverage (not a real thing but read on) so what do you think the premium for that might be? How about infinity as well, since pricing is calculated by determining exposure. The problem arises when people have claims that are denied and seemed shocked when told “that’s not covered.” Here’s a good example. Imagine you never changed the oil on your car. Eventually, the engine would fail, and you would be stuck with a huge repair bill. If full coverage existed, then that would be covered but the bottom line is that no one would be incented to do maintenance since there would be no consequences for your neglect and the cost of the insurance would be unaffordable. If you think rates are high now (and I do, too) then you can only imagine how much more they would be. Lately, full coverage has come to mean that you have physical damage coverage for your car and not only the required state liability coverages. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t exceptions and deductibles anyway. “Oh sure,” you might say, “That’s just the insurance company trying to weasel their way out of paying.” Okay, let me let you in on a
big secret. Insurance companies are not non-profits and they need to make a profit like every other business to stay in business. The broader the coverage is, the greater the exposure and yep, the greater the premium (your cost) will be. This is where a real person like an agent or broker is helpful. Don’t just buy coverage based on what you had before or someone else recommends or even just because it’s cheaper. Pick our brains, that’s why we’re here. So please, don’t ask me for full coverage or brag how you’re faultless in everything you do. It won’t work at home and it won’t work here either. Just like the handful of foreign phrases you remember from high school, relish in the thought that you don’t really need to become fluent in insurance and just need to understand a few key words. Just use us to translate so you can make the best choices for you. Unfortunately, legalese and contracts are not going away any time soon. Maybe it’s just something we will have to live with or just maybe the lawyers are angry at the rest of us for having to learn Latin and this is their revenge. Et salvum manere ad gerunt larva. If you have a topic or question that you would like to see addressed in a future article or any feedback, please submit them to us at kevinboyle@ rockawaytimes.com (John Lepore is the owner of John Lepore Insurance Agency).

On Friday, July 10, a post was made to the NextDoor app from a concerned neighbor about TrapBags that had swastikas carved into them along the beach wall between Beach 146th and 147th Street. The neighbor claims they were carved “by kids who are drinking,” and said it was reported to police. This comes about eight months after anti-Semitic graffiti was found written in the sand in Belle Harbor and at the Silver Gull Beach Club during Labor Day weekend. One neighbor had a response to the sand bag swastikas. Within five days, the swastikas were covered with colorful drawings of hearts instead.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
It has often been said that no one talks more about death than the Irish. But death is something we all face. Death is one of the most important factors that give life meaning. There is biologic death and brain death. The concept of brain death, or the determination of death by neurologic criteria, was first proposed by a Harvard committee in 1968, and then adopted into the Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) in 1981. Although the UDDA was widely accepted and endorsed by medical professional organizations, in recent years the concept has come under greater scrutiny and is increasingly the focus of legal challenges. One problem is that the diagnostic criteria for determining brain death, which have not changed in decades, do not satisfy the wording of the law. It is now widely acknowledged that some patients who meet the cri-

Death Subject to Change teria for brain death may retain basic brain functions that are not included in the required tests. The UDDA needs to be revised to be more specific about which functions need to be lost to satisfy the definition of brain death, functions such as consciousness and the capacity to breathe on one’s own. As it stands today, medical practice is not in alignment with legal standards. One test that should never be used to determine brain death is the EEG, or brain wave test. Unlike what happens on TV shows, the EEG is almost never totally flat, leading to the mistaken assumption that there is still meaningful brain activity. The 1968 Harvard committee maintained that brain death was separate from biological death, a concept completely rejected by the UDDA. Under the UDDA, brain death is considered biologic death. Brain death in a comatose person is determined by the apnea test, where the patient is temporarily disconnected from

the respirator to look for spontaneous breathing, and the absence of basic brain reflexes like the gag reflex, corneal reflex, and pupil constriction in response to light. Most physicians today equate brain death with biologic death and do not distinguish it from cardiac arrest. But this view has been challenged by multiple reports in recent years. One well-known case is that of Jahi McMath, a teenage girl who survived biologically almost five years after being diagnosed as brain dead following surgery. She was cared for at home and continued to grow normally and even began menstruating. In another case, a 4-year-old boy was diagnosed as being brain dead following meningitis, yet he survived biologically for over 20 years. At autopsy, his brain was completely calcified with no identifiable neural tissue. These and other cases continue to occur as a result of lawsuits and legal challenges to the vague wording of the UDDA and state laws.
As counterintuitive as it may seem, when functions such as breathing and nutrition are medically supported, the brain is not essential for maintaining biological integration and functioning, although in most cases biologic death closely follows brain death. In Great Britain, the Code of Practice of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges explicitly endorses the view that apneic (no spontaneous breathing) unconsciousness should be recognized as death. It states, “Death entails the irreversible loss of those essential characteristics which are necessary to the existence of a living human person and, thus, the definition of death should be regarded as the irreversible loss of the capacity for consciousness, combined with the irreversible loss of the capacity to breathe.” Until the language of the UDDA or state law is clarified, lawsuits will undoubtedly continue. GOODNESS Once upon a time, a Native American elder was telling his grandson a story of two wolves that live in each one of us and wage a daily struggle for dominance in our lives. One wolf is filled with love, joy, hope, peace, gratitude, optimism, generosity, understanding, humility, kindness, truth, faith, and compassion. The other is a reflection of bitterness, envy, anger, sorrow, guilt, greed, arrogance, self-pity, inferiority, lies, ego, selfishness, and judgment. Their struggle is constant, their determination to win unwaver-
ing. “So, which wolf wins?” asked the grandson. The grandfather responded, “The one you feed.” During this time, we’re witnessing great discord and disharmony after having come together seemingly under the quarantine guidelines. Professions of gratitude, acts of kindness and generosity abounded. Now the opposite seems to be taking hold. For the most part, we’re not going to teach old dogs new tricks; but we can teach the young people exactly what the elder was teaching his grandson. The only way anything is going
to change is if it is approached with goodness and intelligence. Taking the time to examine what is really going on, thinking on it and forming opinions for the good of all and acting on them without violence. Instead of bats, let’s wield wands. Yes, I’ve always been optimistic and I believe in the goodness of humanity. I think goodness will prevail and we’ll get to a point where more and more people will realize that there are good and there are bad and this has been since the beginning of time. One of the lessons we learned from the pandemic is that it did not discriminate. It didn’t matter who you are, how much money you have, what position you have, what class, what religion, what anything. People are behaving in extremes - on opposite ends - maybe that is what has to happen so we can land in the middle in peace and harmony? There are no absolutes. We shouldn’t stand with groups only because of what they represent. And one or a few who have acted in violence should not be considered as representative
Page 25 of the group. Let’s focus on core principles and re-train and re-educate. What is in our control is what is in our household. What do we say? What do we think? What examples do we project? Let’s soften our hearts, open up for understanding and make choices based not on hate but based on understanding, stepping back and thinking about how this can work. Ask yourself which wolf do you want to be? You have your choice. If you choose to be the latter in the above, motivated by ego, greed, etc., that is your choice. If you’re acting that way because it was how you were taught or you have always been that way, then maybe it is time to think about it as an observer taking a step back. If you choose to be the former, then make it contagious! ***“Goodness is the only investment that never fails.” ~Henry David Thoreau May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Beach Etiquette Part 2 Thank you so much for all of your emails this past week. Everyone seems to be on the same page with people needing beach etiquette. I just want to note these rules are for everyone, not just our visitors. My favorite email was from Kevin Reilly who has a great idea that the “influential editor of the Rockaway Times persuade the Parks Department to include them (my rules) in posters strung along the boardwalk in
strategic locations, just as posters advising about swimming safety are distributed. Rule 4: PDAs. Our beach is a public beach, not a private beach on a romantic getaway. You may hold hands but do not make out in the water or on your blanket. I have seen women straddling their partner on their blanket, on a weekend! Thanks. Rule 5: As far as beach umbrellas go, we do not want
someone to get impaled while trying to enjoy a sunny day at the beach. I understand skin cancer and sunburn are factors in you wanting to sit underneath the shade, but you need to put in some effort. Dig a hole and make sure it is securely in the sand. It does take some work. If you need help, ask. I am sure each beach has an umbrella guru. We have plenty. Rule 6: Do not change your clothes on the beach. Walk to the nearest restroom and change out of your bathing suit into the attire you wish to wear for your commute home. No one wants to see this. Also, do not take a full shower with soap and shampoo at the showers on the boardwalk. Those showers are for cleaning off the sand, not your full body shower. Rule 7: This rule is not really for the beach but it applies to walking around the streets and in the neighborhood businesses. Shirts and shoes are not optional. Put them on. I do not care if you are thin and can rock the look, many of you cannot. This rule especially goes
The Rockaway Times into effect after dark. I recently saw a young lady with a great shape in a bikini and a sarong eating a dinner at a local restaurant after dark. Don’t worry though, she did have on a mask. Rule 8: Do not feed the seagulls‌We locals call them the beach rats. Would you feed a rat on the subway? I do not think so. Please do not leave food around as it will attract the beach rats. The seagulls are resourceful. They will practically unlock your zip lock bag and get to your sandwich. Rule #9: Be aware of your surroundings. Do not shake out your sandy towel while people are sitting behind you. (Also, please see rules from last week about not sitting so close to people). After you get your umbrella situated firmly in the sand, I know the next step is applying sunscreen. Again, do not spray wildly so that the whole beach is now tasting your Coppertone spray. Have a great week everyone. Email me @MrsHanning308@ gmail.com

The Rockaway Times
By Shane Kulman
Seeing The Future Dear Enchantress, I want to start my own business. I want to become a business owner. Just like you, I have my master’s in special education, and I loved my education and all my years as a teacher, and now I'm done with all this teleteaching etc. The problem is I want my business to be using my psychic skills and tarot card reading, but I am afraid my family will be mad at me. I'm afraid I won't make enough money to live, etc. Basically, I
have a lot of fears, and also this strong drive and commitment to helping people who could use my help. I see so many people stuck and stressed out and it's hard for me to keep back my information. I have done readings for friends before and they are so happy and get so much information from me that absolutely changes their situations. How do I begin!? I'm excited! Entrepreneur Ellen, I LOVE your excitement!

Having positive energy is the best thing! I also hear your fears, and I'm glad you are aware of some of them. I also want to compliment that you are already doing and offering your gift to friends, keep doing that. Keep sharing your gift and your talents with people. As I teach in my F*ck Your Fears course, the business "stuff" is nuts and bolts. More important is the self-esteem, courage and mindset to offer your gifts and get paid for it. All of that is an inside job. As for your fears with your family, you are not alone, so many women have this. And the truth of all truths is, they want you to be happy. They want to make sure you're safe, taken care of and can survive. It looks different for different families, keep this in mind. Also, this is a new venture, be gentle with who you share this with. You're actually birthing something new, so discernment is important. Everyone will want to give you advice and it's usually based on their experiences, not what is actually good for
you. So, having clear boundaries with yourself, and when people start telling you "you should..." cut them off, and let them know you're grateful they care, but please, it's scary enough to share it or something like that. The next two steps can be different for everyone, so just reading what you've shared 1) Get testimonials from friends you do readings for; 2) Ask them if they know anyone else that might be interested. You can build a whole business just from those two things. A side note, don't use the word "donations." You are not a charity. You have a gift and decide on a price that suits you. Most women business owners undercharge or give friends discounts. There's another word I advise not to use, "discount." Give "bonuses," using abundant language feels better all around. If you want more info, it's my PASSION to guide women business owners! For more information or to ask Enchantress Shane a question, email her at love@enchantedembodiment.com

WrestleTalk
CAN REGIONAL PROMOTIONS FLOURISH AGAIN? By Eric Jayden
During 1965 and 1989, Regional Wrestling Promotions flourished throughout the United States. Companies like the NWA, AWA, USWA and the WWF all had specific regions throughout the United States which they exclusively operated in. Most promotions work together and exchange pro wrestling talent but they never ran shows in each other's territories. This gave wrestling fans many more options to choose from and it also gave wrestlers the opportunity to work different areas and gain more income. Now fast-forwarding to the present, we currently have three predominantly large promotions operating which are World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Impact Wrestling (ICW). Now with the current state of the pandemic, wrestling has been on pause not only in the United
States but throughout the world. Which has severely limited the viewing options to the wrestling fans and has reduced the opportunities for pro wrestlers to obtain work. But there is opportunity there, once the world returns to the New Norm. This could be an excellent opportunity for smaller promotions to start operating at a regional level and start giving the fans more options and creating more opportunities for pro wrestlers to be seen and grow in their careers. Imagine having the opportunity to watch various wrestling promotions throughout
the United States on television. The opportunity to watch different wrestlers, different wrestling styles and wrestling will no longer be a monopoly to the exclusive few. Can Regional Wrestling Promotions flourish again? I say they could, and I would definitely love to see it. The question of the week comes from Alex M. in Edgemere and he asked, "When will wrestling return back to normal? Also, I read your column every week." Thank you, Alex, and I'm glad you enjoy the column. To answer your question, this will all depend on
how long this pandemic will last. Unfortunately, there is no real timeline, we all just have to remain patient until the pandemic is controlled. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com. You can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a great week!
