Saturday’s Kite Festival to Honor Billy Taylor

“Let’s go fly a kite, up to the highest height…” Kites galore will take to the skies above Beach 84th Street on Saturday, July 20 as part of the Rockaway Kite Festival. As the kites fill the sky with color, many will be reminded of the colorful personality of the man who started it all— the late Billy Taylor. Taylor was a man of many trades and talents, and one of them was purely unique—kites. In

2015, Taylor spearheaded the Rockaway Kite Festival, an event that many hadn’t seen the likes of since the late 2000s when the last kites flew above Riis Park as part of the New York Kite Festival. With his own interest in kites, Taylor started his own festival in Rockaway Beach to not only share his love of kites, but to help bring back something else that was missing from the community—Whalemina. The beloved whale statue re-

turned to the sea during Hurricane Sandy and at the urging of the community, the artist who painted her, Geoff Rawling, was determined to bring her back in some form. Rawling now credits Taylor with helping make that dream come true. “Billy Taylor is a longtime friend of mine and a big supporter of Whalemina. He started the kite festival in 2015 and helped give a majority of the money to rebuild her,” Rawling said. At the Kite Festival in 2015, Taylor flew unique kites above the beach, and sold kites through his company, Boardwalk Kites, while a beautifully painted inflatable version of Whalemina bounced around the beach to renew interest in the whale and to help raise mon-

ey for her rebuild. The event was a success and according to Rawling, Taylor contributed about 90% of the funding to rebuild a new Whalemina. While the Parks Department wouldn’t allow for a new statue, according to Rawling, the artist found another way to bring her back—by making her mobile. The Whalemina float made her debut at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in 2018. “We have the whale now, which Billy was largely responsible for,” Rawling said. Taylor never got to see it. In January 2016, he died after a battle with cancer. But his spirit lives on through Whalemina and will continue to live on through the kite festival. Saturday’s event will serve as a celebration of Taylor’s life and all that he

loved. In addition to Rawling, helping with the effort is Taylor’s son, Matthew, who will continue the legacy of his father. “Matthew took over the responsibility of the kites, so we decided early this year to do another kite festival. We’re going to bring out the whale and celebrate Billy and keep the spirit alive,” Rawling said. At the event, which will run all day from 10 a.m. ‘til 9 p.m., there will be unique kites to see, a variety of kites to buy at all price points, kite giveaways, and of course, opportunities to take pictures with Whalemina 2.0. So during this beautiful beach day, head to Beach 84th to celebrate the spirit of Billy Taylor, the rebirth of Whalemina, and maybe even fly a kite.

JUMP Dance Dominates National Dance Competitions JUMP Dance Studio has many reasons to jump for joy lately. JUMP Dance studio recently competed in Kids Artistic Review’s National Dance Competition, held at Foxwoods in CT from July 7 -12. The local kids danced their hearts out and

were named First Place National Champions and won the Studio of Excellence Award in their primary and intermediate groups. In addition to this, they just earned some high power rankings from the Star Dance Alli-

ance. They earned first place for their Welcome Home routine in the Novice- 12 and over category, and second for their Disco Fever routine in the Novice- 11 and under category. The studio has been invited to the Star Dance Alliance Excellence

Death and taxes, I get it. The only guarantees in life. But the death part seems a little less definite. I mean you’re gonna die but some part of you just doesn’t believe it. You wake up every day. You’re still here. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a different outcome—then what about the thought of dying? I keep thinking about it, but it doesn’t happen, so I must be insane. Which reminds me of that crazy kid’s prayer they taught you back in the days of the lava lamp. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take…what the hell? You’re a kid and they’re teaching you a prayer about croaking in your sleep? No wonder I can’t catch forty

straight winks. Between wondering if the Lord is going to take my soul and stubbing my toe on the way to the bathroom for a middle-of-the-night pee, I’m a mess. But there’s more to it. It’s in my genes. If you’re doing the whole family tree thing, you go to Ancestry.com or 23AndMe. They both should be called Can Of Worms dotcom. I did Ancestry.com first and so did my immediate family members. Turns out, I am truly the father of the son who will remain nameless. All in all, I didn’t find out anything worth an eyebrow arch. But you gotta be prepared for all kinds of surprises with these things. Investigators tracked a serial killer through Ancenstry. com. They found DNA at a crime scene, found possible relatives and then boom, figured how who the killer was. So, you might be related to a serial killer or you might find out you have a sibling that you

didn’t know about. Or find out your sibling is a serial killer. Crazy stuff is possible. 23andMe is a rival site of Ancestry and offers a lot more to worry about than somebody you never knew suddenly showing up to use your private drive in the summer. 23andMe runs your DNA through various tests and tells you if you’re more likely to be afraid of heights and if you are more likely to like chocolate over vanilla ice cream. And, honest to God, they tell you if you are more or less likely to have a unibrow. Allow me to pause as I brag and dance around a little: I am less likely to have a unibrow, according to my DNA profile. My genes also indicate that I’m not likely to be a deep sleeper. (It did not indicate that I would have murderous thoughts about people who leave wind chimes out at night). I was told in very polite terms that I wasn’t cut out for pro sports: “Kevin, your

genetic muscle composition is uncommon in elite power athletes. You do not have the same genetic variant as these elite athletes.” Wow. I’m glad I paid for the premium service. I guess the free version says, “Kevin, you’re a doughy piece of lemon merengue pie and stop making us laugh trying to be a jock.” 23andMe also delivers a loaded gun. Your DNA tests reveal whether your susceptible to various diseases, including Alzheimer’s and/or Parkinson’s. The results don’t say if such things are certain but they tell if your ancestors dropped that turd in the DNA pool. You don’t have to look. You have to check off a bunch of things to gain access to this info, so it doesn’t hit you like a rogue wave. Do you really want to know? So far, I have not yet peeked at my results (or I did and I have already forgotten?). Did I mention I don’t have a unibrow?

of judging will take place that morning. The reception is at 11 a.m. All are welcome. ***** Speaking of contests, last week we said our Rockaway Sandcastle Contest would be July 28. Due to conflicts with other events and better tide times, we are hosting it on Sunday, August 4 instead. Hope to see you there! ***** Several senior citizens, locals, showed they’ve still got what it takes to show off in the water. They jumped in the water off Breezy and didn’t stop swimming until they reached Sandy Hook, New Jersey. They were accompanied by a couple of boats, just in case. Maybe it’s crazy, but good for them! ***** After many requests for more safety measures, a speed camera has been placed at Beach 73rd and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. After a woman was killed in this area last year, many are applauding the new camera.

***** The Sandpiper Playground at Beach 105 and the boardwalk was supposed to be completed in June. We asked Parks for an update and they told us it's now the end of August. The total construction cost is almost $6 mil. Extra, Extra! ‘Newsies’ Set to Leap Onto the RTC Stage By Kami-Leigh Agard

It’s 1899, and a rag-tag gang of ragamuffins, known as “newsies,â€? led by Jack Kelly, form their own union protesting newspaper titan Joseph Pulitzer for hiking the price of the “papesâ€? they hawk to feed themselves. To borrow a quote from Charles Dickens’ novel, “A Tale of Two Cities,â€?— “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity‌,â€? and the Rockaway Theatre Company’s (RTC) production of the musical, “Newsies,â€? powerfully points out the conflict between family and love, hatred and oppression, good and evil, light and darkness, and wisdom and folly. The stirring ballads, amazing choreography and acting played out on the stage illuminates a time in NYC that was at one hand—one of despair and

suffering—and on the other—a ray of joy and hope. The curtain on RTC’s moving production goes up this Friday, July 19, and it’s definitely not one to miss. This past Monday, The RT got a sneak peak of the production, directed and choreographed by Gabby Mangano. The production crew and cast pulled no punches in making this an epic production

of talent and artistry. The music, directed by Jeffrey Arzberger, is a live orchestra filling the theater with a cacophony of sounds ranging from flute, clarinet, guitar, violin, piano, cello and drums. Watching the actors and dancers will leave you shell-shocked with their larger-than-life energetic scores and dance gymnastics. No note is lost in translation, and try

Jack Kelly, (played by Sam Kelley), the leader of the pack of ragamuffins, comes off as a rogue, very handsome and outwardly standoffish, but there is a tenderness he emotes especially with his friend, Crutchie. Thomas Daudelin, the actor playing the role of Crutchie, a disabled orphaned youth who walks with crutches, is so believable that you want to walk to the stage and hold him as he precariously balances his pain of being different from his peers, but still trying to fit in with the gang of misfits. No spoiler alert, but what happens to him at the ending, will have you in tears. Donna Falzon, who plays Larkin, is sexy, lush and her guttural vocals will woo you to want to join her as she unabashedly unleashes her raw sensuality, very avant garde, especially for the time period. Early in act one, Medda tells Jack, “Where better to escape trouble but the theater!” Her rendition of “That’s Rich” will fill you with life. And the showstopper, though you only see him in one scene is actor, Brian Sadowski, who plays the evil man himself, Joseph Pulitzer. Love him or hate him, Sadowski as Pulitzer is so believable that you want to flog him—he’s that good. Newsies really tells the story of what a labor union can unleash when it comes to solidarity, and fighting against big guys like Pulitzer, who have their “scabs” aka gangsters, to keep uprisings down, but fail. Why—because the American spirit, especially “New Yawkers’” is strong and

resilient, and never takes, “No!,” laying down. Director and choreographer, Gabby Mangano, is to be commended for her mix of acrobatics and dance combos for the motley crew cast. Some of the dancers/actors such as Romeo (played by Jonathan Mitchell) will have you watching in awe, wondering how did he pull off those flips and dance moves. The set design by Frank Caiti is so fluid, and your eyes are riveted by the chalkboard showing the newspaper headline of

the day and how tabloid press sold papers—maybe very unlike The New York Times’ slogan, “All the News That's Fit to Print.” Protagonist Jack even illustrates that when he tries to show a newbie newsie, Les, (Dylan Taruskin, another showstopper in the production), how to sell “papes.” Jack tells Les, “So, how old are you kid?” Les: “I’m ten…almost.” Jack: “Well if anybody asks, you’re seven. Younger sells more paper, and if we’re gonna be partners…That’s just business… (To the newsies):

Newsies! Get to the streets. The sun is up, the headline stinks, and this kid ain’t gettin’ any younger! When the newsies’ bottom line is reduced with the 10 cents increase on selling a bundle of 100 papers, they show what solidarity in fighting your rights is all about, but unfortunately with a personal cost. As they say in the show, "There's change coming once and for all. You makes the front page and man, you is major news.” And folks, RTC’s “Newsies” is a headliner. As commented by Mangano, “Overall, “Newsies,” is a story of hope. A true story—where kids took a stand and bound together to change their future. A HERO’S WELCOME

They came, they saw, they had fun! This year’s Rockaway Warrior Weekend was another success. On Thursday, July 11, crowds of locals lined the streets from Rockaway Beach Boulevard to State Road in Breezy Point, awaiting the Hope For the Warriors’ arrival into town. Despite the threat of rain, adults and kids alike brought out their American flags and gave a warm welcome to the heroes

who came to town to enjoy a weekend of waterside activities. All weekend long, the warriors got to enjoy surfing, kayaking, paddle boarding, massages, fishing, live music, sailing and more in Breezy Point. Congratulations to the many volunteers, organizations and individuals that make this weekend possible and who continue to show our veterans that they are appreciated.

Sixth Rockaway Beach Jazz Festival Back at the Boardwalk! By Kami-Leigh Agard

Folks, if you’re all about that jazz—Rockaway is calling you home for the Sixth Annual Jazz Music Festival hosted by local Tim Otto next Saturday, July 27, featuring three NYC jazz bands at Low Tide Bar at the Beach 97th Street concession. This lineup offers a range for jazz lovers, who like in a wedding—want something new, unexpected and of course, something straight-up traditional. Otto, a more than 30year veteran saxophone player, describes himself as just a jazz aficionado, passionate about bringing his love of the music genre to the beach. According to Otto, professionally trained at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Australia, when he first moved to Rockaway 10 years ago, it was a wilderness when it came to the live jazz

music scene. “I’ve been playing professionally for over 35 years, and of course jazz is my love. I’ve lived in NYC for over 30 years, and when I moved to Rockaway 10 years ago, I wanted to share my passion

not just for the music, but the musicians here in Rockaway, the community I made my home with my family, but there weren’t many venues to play, especially for jazz,” Otto said.

However, Otto said that as the years progressed, he was able with the support from the community of jazz lovers, to turn that around. “The music scene here has changed so much in the last few years, especially up to five years ago. Ten years ago, there weren’t many venues to play, and there wasn’t much happening as far as jazz. I started doing some jazz nights at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club when they first opened, and they actually hosted the inaugural jazz festival, which was great,” Otto said. Then the next year, Otto was able to move the festival to the boardwalk at Low Tide Bar, which has been hosting it ever since. This year’s lineup is the variety that Otto likes to showcase. As for Spin Cycle, I know the drummer, Scott Neumann, and he reached out to me. I actually have musicians reaching out to me who want to play at the festival. Everyone wants to play in Rockaway! So for the festival’s lineup, it’s a balance of me picking people, including those submitting material to me. I usually try to mix it up with straight jazz, something a bit more funky and something more experimental to get a varied line-up,� Otto said. Rockaway Shows Love for Pride

Rockaway’s got pride. The first LGBTQ Pride Block Party, held on Saturday, July 15, had a big turnout. Rockaway’s LGBTQ organization, Out Rockaway, teamed up with the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center to bring the first block party event to the peninsula that celebrates LGBTQ pride. Many stopped by the event that featured music, speeches,

resources, a photo booth, vendors and more, including elected officials like Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, Councilman Donovan Richards and Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer. Contrary to popular belief, I am not a dyslexic insomniac agnostic who lies awake at night wondering if there really is a Dog. On the other hand, ever since Super Storm Sandy, I have become a bit of a weather geek, prone to rising early each day to check weather data provided by the National Weather Service, NOAA, the National

Hurricane Center and other various weather analytic sites and, of course, the climate bible itself, "Weather for Dummies." Unlike many of my friends and neighbors, I have chosen to ignore the annual weather prognostications proffered by a rodent over at the Staten Island Zoo derived from the appearance of his shadow (or lack thereof ). One longstanding item at the top of my bucket list was to sneak into the Staten Island Zoo just before Groundhog Day and arrange to have Staten Island Chuck make his appearance replete with a sign around his neck which read, "Dammit Jim! I'm a rodent not a meteorologist!" Unfortunately, I had to scratch that item off my list back in 2014 when Mayor de Blasio unceremoniously dropped Chucky on his head, resulting in the demise of the rodent weath-

Granted, it's more psychological than anything else but 30 degrees C. sounds a hell of a lot cooler than 90 degrees F. and you can warn the rest of the family not to touch the A/C unless the temperature reads 90. Whatever you do make sure you do not switch over to Kelvin temperature readings or else people will call the Fire Department thinking the house is on fire. (90 degrees F. = 305 degrees K.) Okay, now that we have your house A/C and ConEd in check, what if you have to go outside during the heat wave? Speaking of weather, by the time you are reading this column, we should be on the tail end of some showers and T-storms, the system remnants of Hurricane Barry but the real story will be the heat build-up Friday into Saturday. The heat index Friday afternoon will possibly be in the triple digits and will still be hovering around 90 degrees at 1 a.m. Saturday morning. Georgina's Says ‘Ciao’ to Rockaway By Katie McFadden

As you walk in, the smell of cappuccinos and pastries immediately hits your senses and your mouth starts to water. The cobblestone path below your feet takes you right to the roads of Rome, as above you the vines bearing lemons that match the bright tables and chairs transport you to Sicily, while scenes of seaside towns make you feel like you’re on the Amalfi Coast rather than New York. That feeling is reinforced as you’re greeted with a “Ciao, bella” from an Italian woman with a welcoming smile. Now comes the tough part.

What to order? After all, the delicious endings are never ending at Beach 116th Street’s new café and bakery, Georgina’s. Perhaps you fancy a slice of Italian cheesecake filled with fresh ricotta that melts in your mouth with each bite. But if New York style cheesecake is more your heart’s desire, they have that too, topped with fruits like cherries, blueberries or pineapples, or without. Bite into an Italian cookie so fresh it crumbles right on your tongue as a burst of jelly tantalizes your taste buds. Or maybe you’re just there for a classic cannoli, which are filled with cool, fresh cannoli cream right before your eyes. Wash it all down with a strong cappuccino, espresso or maybe an iced coffee on a hot day. Still need to cool down? Try one of the many frozen delicacies you can’t get at any other shop on the peninsula like tartufo, spumoni or a refreshing lemon granita, an actual lemon stuffed and overflowing with Sicilian sorbet. One thing is for sure—no matter what you pick, you won’t be disappointed.

Part of what makes everything delicious and authentically Italian are the first- and second-generation Italians who own and operate Georgina’s. Charlie D’Ancano has been coming to Rockaway since he was a kid and about six months ago, he decided to make it his permanent home. However, coming from a family that has 60 years in the restaurant and bakery business, he wanted to bring a taste of it with him to share with his new hometown. So he partnered with longtime friend, Frank Fodera, a Rockaway resident for 35 years, and both set out on a new retail venture—an Italian bakery and café. They came across the perfect spot on Beach 116th Street, the former home of Blue Bungalow, just a few doors down from where the busy shopping corridor saw its last bakery about 15 years ago. In a rush to meet the busy summer season, D’Ancano, a retired carpenter, and Fodera, an electrician for Pappas & Fodera Electric Co., acted quick and built out their own shop within

a month. However, by the looks of it, it’s clear that they put great care and detail into the build out. On July 4, Georgina’s opened its doors to the community, and to rave reviews. Georgina’s sees a steady flow of customers all day, so much so that they’ve already extended their hours. “We were originally going to be open until 8 p.m., but we still had people walking in at 9, 9:30 every night, so now we close around 10 p.m. We didn’t expect that. It’s been a pleasant surprise. It’s exhausting, because we’re here since 6:30 in the morning, but we don’t mind it. It’s great,” D’Ancano said. As The Rockaway Times sampled some treats, D’Ancano spoke to two women from Ozone Park sitting nearby, already calling them “regulars.” D’Ancano said this has become the norm with people coming from near and far to experience what Georgina’s has to offer, especially with the ferry bringing in international customers that have shown appreciation for the Italian-inspired décor and scenic murals,

with one woman even pointing out her own home in a photo, showing that Georgina’s is making a personal connection with their customers in all that they do. As you walk through the door, the staff greets everyone with a smile and even offers a fresh cup of lemon water, as they treat everyone like a family member. For those at Georgina’s, family is very important. The shelves are stocked with fresh products delivered from D’Ancano’s family’s wholesale bakery business based in Brooklyn, by family members such as his nephew. Behind the counter, making customers feel at home are two young family members of the owners and D’Ancano’s sister-in-law, Josephine LoGiudice, whose family brings in the frozen desserts. And the name of the bakery was inspired by a new member of the family—Georgina, D’Ancano’s one-year-old granddaughter. Making sure everyone feels at home, Georgina’s tries their best to accommodate customer requests. They take special orders and will make cakes for any occasion. “We’re a specialty café and bakery. We try to give great service and hospitality, along with the best quality that we’ve been used to in all our years,” LoGiudice said. “We do trays of cookies, all kinds of cakes, mini pastries large pastries, all kind of Italian cookies, morning danishes, muffins, gelato, everything.” And for those feeling something savory, they offer that as well. “We have all different types of breads that are picked up fresh every morning. We have olive loaf, broccoli loaf, eggplant loaf, prosciutto loaf, spinach load, focaccia, a wide variety of everything,” D’Ancano said, pointing out the array. They also offer arancini (rice balls) and plan to offer even more food options in the future. What else is in store for the future of Georgina’s? With things going so well, D’Ancano says he’s already scouting a second retail location in Queens so that even more people can say “ciao” to Georgina’s. One of the most common metal poisonings is lead poisoning, also known as lead toxicity. Children are more sensitive to lead exposure than adults, especially children under five years of age. Young children spend more time crawling on the floor where there may be dust contaminated with lead and they tend to put objects in their mouth. Lead may be absorbed via the digestive tract, respiratory tract, and the skin. Lead may be found in the air, water, dust, soil, food, and consumer products. In the U.S., lead has been removed from paint and gasoline, however, some aviation gasolines may still contain lead. If you live in a house or apartment built before 1960, the paint in your house may contain lead. As this paint ages and flakes off,

it falls to the floor as dust. Descriptions of lead poisoning date as far back as 2000 B.C. The brain and nervous system are most susceptible to lead. Fetuses and young children are more sensitive to lead because their brains and nervous systems are still developing. Most children with high lead levels are asymptomatic, however lead poisoning can lead to decreased IQ, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, hearing problems, and impaired growth. Rarely, more serious neurological symptoms like seizures and coma may occur. In pregnancy, lead can affect the development of several fetal organ systems. The poor are at greater risk for lead toxicity, as are those in developing countries. In 2016, 540,000 lead-related deaths were reported worldwide, mostly in developing countries. Mass lead poisoning events have occurred, most recently in China and Nigeria. In both of those cases, hundreds of

children were killed when they were exposed to fumes and exhaust from a local factory. A few years ago, there was a recall of toys that were made in China because the paint on them contained high levels of lead. Despite it being removed from gasoline and paint, lead is still used in many other products including glass, lead-acid batteries, radiation shields, ammunition, circuit boards, fetal monitors, ceramic glazes, cosmetics, and jet engines. Workers in industries that produce these products must take precautions to prevent their exposure. These precautions are overseen by the federal government via the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Workers must also ensure that they do not bring home lead particles on their clothing. If lead toxicity is suspected, it can be confirmed by a simple blood test. In pediatrics, a finger prick test is available, although it is less accurate

than a full blood test. Lead poisoning is very treatable, especially if caught early. The mainstay of treatment is chelation therapy. Basically, this uses a medication to bind to lead molecules and carry them out of the body. Here in NYC, those who live in public housing are most at risk for lead poisoning, mostly from peeling and chipping paint. While this hazard has been known to the authorities since the 1970s, it continues to pose a problem. A close friend recently shared that she has some things she wants to do before she closes her eyes and is taking the next step to begin that journey. We don’t know how much time we have before we finally close our eyes, so the notion of waking up to possibilities is particularly powerful to me. All of a sudden, I realized that no matter how old we are, what we have done, what we want, we have no control over the moment we will close our eyes. My friend realizes that and is waking up to her moment to fulfill some of her dreams. She is making a change, carving out some time and doing something else. Some people have many “waking up” periods in their lives, being aware of and open to opportunities that may arise and maybe changing direction or doing something new. Being present with a calm mind sets the stage for waking up to the moment, waking up to change, waking up to do and be something different. Physically speaking, waking up is associated with opening the eyes, so we

And then thinking about how to enhance the moment, how to enhance a relationship, how to enhance our states of being. Put aside fears, know that support is out there when needed, and try to find what really matters to you. Traveling With Bob and Sandy A CRUISE LINE OR HOTEL? By Bob & Sandy Nesoff

One of the fastest growing means of leisure travel in recent years has been the river cruise. Amongst the most popular are the long ships plying the rivers of Europe. But which one to choose? The itineraries are similar for most of the major lines; the ships are similar. Think “stretch limo.” Most river ships, called, “Long Ships,” are reminiscent of the stretch limo used in proms and weddings. Accommodations are universally comfortable, food is generally excellent and the tours and attractions along the rivers… well, they’ve all been there for hundreds, if not thousands of years. So what’s the difference? Arguably one of the most wellknown of the river cruise lines is Viking River Cruises. You’ll often see their ads on television. But where do they truly rank among say, 10 river cruise lines?

According to Travel & Leisure Magazine, one of the most renowned publications focusing on travel, Viking ranks a respectable fourth place. Really? Yes, really? Viking falls in behind Tauck (#2) and Crystal (#3). The surprise in the T&L survey is Uniworld Boutique Cruises. The poll taken by the magazine was conducted amongst people who’ve cruised the various world rivers and placed Uniworld in a solid #1 position. One reason for the success of Uniworld is the fact that it is family run. Today, four generations of the Tollman family oversee not only the cruise line, but its Red Carnation luxury hotels that can be found in Florida and Europe. There’s a Tollman hand in every aspect of the business. Beatrice Tollman, company president, has a fine and delicate hand in the overall operation ensuring that every sector of the company lives up to the high standards she’s set.

While Uniworld came in at #1, Red Carnation placed in the 100 best hotels in the world. Its parent company, Travel Corporation, operates in 70 countries and has such well-known entities as Trafalgar Tours and Contac Tours under its umbrella. Uniworld operates in Europe on the Danube, the Ganges, Mekong, Nile, Po, Rhone, Volga, Yangtze and more. The Danube cruise, one of two Uniworld cruises we sampled from Vienna to Bucharest brought passengers into close touch not only with locals by having lunch in a villager’s home, but visiting sites such as ancient Roman archeological digs. A second Uniworld cruise we purchased along with another couple, whom, we interestingly met on the Danube cruise, brought passengers to China. On tap was Tiananmen Square where some years back the government killed an undetermined number of young people

demonstrating for democracy. The highlight of this trip, without exception was seeing the terra cotta army in Xi’an. That discussion will have to wait for another time. While China is billed as a land/ cruise trip, the only time on the Yangtze was a four-day cruise. But to watch the beauty of China pass the balcony of your cabin was worth the time. Unfortunately, there is no nexus between the cruises and Red Carnation. The hotels have earned as much kudos as the cruise line. The T&L list named Red Carnation as the #6 spot for the best hotels and it also placed them in the top 10 in other categories. Red Carnation Hotel “41” faces The Mews and overlooks Buckingham Palace. There’s no guarantee, however, that you’ll see Queen Elizabeth or Harry and Meghan. But keep looking out of your window. One never knows.

By Beth Hanning Babysitting Still A Thing? Babysitter: a person who looks after a child or children while the parents are out. What has happened to the babysitter? Do kids still babysit? Do parents still hire babysitters? It seems recently that kids are everywhere I go. Now, my children are 21 and 26, so I like the no children atmosphere. I know the babysitter is expensive but children do not belong in certain places

at certain times. Here is my children etiquette column. Children should not be in the following places : I recently went on a cruise and there was a night club where everyone went every night, and each night it was a different theme. I promise you there was not one theme that said, "Children's Night." The children’s activities were in a separate part of the boat. One young child slept on what looked like

his grandmother’s shoulders while the rest of the family had fun. Each person should have taken a night and go home and let that poor baby sleep in a quiet place. This one child was there every night. There was even a sign that said, "No one under 18 after 11 p.m.” The rule was not enforced. AND 11 o’clock is too late in my opinion. Restaurants : Sure, everyone likes a nice night out and maybe you cannot afford a babysitter or maybe you actually want to have a family meal. However, please do not have your child running around the restaurant. Also please have them out of the restaurant at a reasonable time. I think eight o’clock is their curfew in a restaurant that also serves as a bar. In the summer, if it is dark out and the DJ is playing, then that is definitely time to take your children home. Movie theatres : I am not a frequent attendee of the movie theatres, as films

The Rockaway Times come out on cable and Netflix so quickly, but that is exactly the reason that your child should not be in the theatre after 8 p.m. seeing a film. I especially hated seeing carriages later at night for children who are clearly not watching the movie. Parents just wanted to see the film and either could not 1-Get a babysitter or 2-Afford a babysitter. I understand babysitting is expensive. I loved babysitting when I was younger because I think babysitters were always paid well and I always had money in my pocket. Are people just not wanting to spend it? Has it become too expensive? Have pre-teens and teens become so spoiled they do not need to make money? I do not know the answers to these questions but I do know there is one solution: stay home while your children are small. In a pan over medium heat, sauté onion for about 7-10 minutes, until translucent and browned Baked Stuffed Salmon (or you can cook it longer to caramelize it) and Crab Meat Whisk together the mayonBy Sharon Feldman naise, garlic, parsley, lemon juice and Old Bay Seasoning. Serves: 4 Stir in the sautéed onion. Fold Ingredients: 2 pounds wild-caught salmon in the lump crab meat, without breaking up the lumps. Sprinkle slightly with the 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, sea salt and pepper. Keeping Sidewalks Safe for Pedestrians and Bikers Crossing Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the summer can be like the old video game Frogger. There are so many racing bikes, cars, ferry shuttles, buses and trucks to dodge. Unfortunately, the sidewalk can be just as dangerous. In addition to children under age 13, who are legally allowed to bike on the sidewalk, teenagers and even some adults ride the concrete to avoid the busy streets. This creates dangers for pedestrians and bicyclists alike. According to Belle Harbor resident Elda Vale, “The other day, an elderly woman was frazzled because she hadn’t realized a tween on a bike was trying to pass her on the sidewalk. Had she not “felt” that someone was beside her, she would have been hurt. Just yesterday I had a tween almost crash into me from the front. He was on his bike with earphones on, looking down at his phone while driving fast.” This is a common occurrence when bicycles do not have a bell and young riders don't know bike etiquette. There are several things you and your children can do to keep the sidewalks safe if you need to bike on them: Be like Captain America. There is an iconic scene in Captain America: The Winter Soldier where the Captain repeatedly says, “On your left!” as he zips past Sam Wilson. If you are about to pass a pedestrian on your bike, give that person notice when you are 5-10 feet away. You can say, “on your left” or “excuse me.” Better yet, if you have a bell on your handle bar, ring it. If you want to go retro, buy a bicycle horn. Stop (or slow greatly) at corners. This is especially important if you are riding in the opposite direction of traffic. A driver emerging from a side street may not see a moving bike behind a bush or wall. If you are riding in the opposite direction of the cars, it is likely

that driver won't see you until your bike is directly in front of his or her moving vehicle. If you do not want to stop or slow at the corners, then use the bike lane. Pay attention. Just as texting and driving is a leading cause of car accidents, staring at a smart phone while biking will also lead to unfortunate events. If you are using your phone or iPod for music, follow the one earphone rule. (It really is the law.) Leave one ear open so you can hear pedestrians, other bikers and car horns. Walk Your Bike in Commercial Districts. Busy commercial streets like Beach 129th are difficult for bicyclists to navigate. There are too many double-parked cars, people darting out from between parked cars, and car doors opening suddenly. Riding on the sidewalk is not a good option. With all of the people coming in and out of stores, there are many places where the sidewalk is too “pinched” to enable safe transit for bicyclists and pedestrians. Walk your bike up the block. When you park it, either chain it to the curbside bicycle parking device or stand it right along the storefront. This will leave safe passage for pedestrians and other bicyclists. about common sense. They can also help you avoid getting a ticket or a confiscated bike. “Parents should know that the police or Parks Department can confiscate your child’s bike for violating some of these rules,” said Linda Benigno, 2nd Executive Vice President

of Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA). To help you keep your family and pedestrians safe this season, BHPOA 1st Executive Vice President John Signorelli has posted bike safety tips on the Association’s website: (belleharbor11694.org/). Beach 133rd Kids Celebrate the 4th

On July 4, the Beach 133rd Beach Block held their annual Children’s Parade to celebrate the day. The parade started at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and ended at the beach wall, where everyone said the Pledge of Allegiance and the children sang God Bless America. The event ended with a breakfast for all. This year, the residents also celebrated a new flag pole at the end of the block. The flag pole was dedicated by Monsignor Jack Bracken in honor of John Gerard Farrell who lost his life on September 11, 2001. St. John’s Home Names New Executive Director

St. John’s Home officially has a new Executive Director. Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York and St. John’s Residence for Boys, Inc. recently announce the appointment of Jennifer Horsley as St. John’s Executive Director. After six months as the Interim Executive Director, she will further her work in a more permanent capacity. According to Little Flower, her experience with teens in the foster care system has been a great asset to St. John’s and will have a positive impact moving forward. “The board is pleased to have Jennifer as part of the St. John’s family and grateful for the work that she has done with our boys and we look forward to working with her on future endeavors,” remarked Paul Garavente, President of St. John’s Board of Directors. Corinne Hammons, added “we are so pleased to have Jennifer continue the work she has started at St. John’s. Her relationships with the residents, staff, and the community are a testament to her outstanding skills as a leader.” Horsley has over 20 years of experience in the child welfare field, which she began at Little Flower as a case planner. Since then she has steadily taken on more responsibility and greater challenges as a supervisor, director of foster care and the Preparing Youth for Adulthood program and recently co-chaired the strategic plan implementation process. Horsley is a graduate of Adelphi University, earning a Master’s in Social Work and is a recipient of the first Little Flower Board President’s Award in 2017. She is a long-time Queens resident and currently resides there with her daughter.

SUMMER CLASSIC B-Ball UNDERWAY By Keith ‘Bugsy’ Goldberg

The 35th edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic is well underway now, with games in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard and St. Francis gym, Monday through Thursday each week. More than one thousand players on 82 teams in 12 divisions ranging from the Co-ed 2nd grade division to the Graybeards Legends division are participating in this year's Summer Classic. Greg Hearn is one of our new directors, leading the second- grade division in the gym on Mondays and Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m.. Siobhan Fitzgerald and Noelle Riches have also come on board to helm the Girls Grammar Junior division at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesdays. Joe Courtney and Skippy Doyle complete the early shift with the Boys Grammar Junior division on Mondays at 5:45 p.m. At 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, Court 1 is occupied by the Boys Grammar Senior division, led by Terence Mullin and Matt Stack. Manus, John Moran, and Michael Friedman, take to Court 2. Randy Neiswenter guides the Girls Grammar Senior group on Court 3 while JoJo O'Grady and Kevin Murphy are out on Court 4 with the Boys Grammar Middle division. The Girls High School division began this week and John Blum supervises the games in the gym on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Bryanne Flaherty's Women's Open division plays Mondays and Tuesdays in the gym while the Men are scheduled in the schoolyard on Thursday nights but Mother Nature has disrupted those plans, causing many reschedules since the last time they were actually able to play outside on June 13. Hopefully this weather pattern will break. As always, The Graybeards are the first to start and the first to finish. The Young Guns began playoffs last Thursday while the Legends begin this Thursday night. All their games are now at St. Camillus gym with both championships scheduled for Thursday, July 25. Jimmy Quinn, Kenny Whelan,

and Ronald Whelan assign the officials, Joann Byrne leads our First Aid team, Brian Raphael is our Senior Timer/Scorer and Brian Bagley and Alex Goldberg are our Schoolyard Supervisors. Play will

continue through the week of August 12 for most, with Girls High School and Women's Open finishing the following week. Don't miss the action at the St. Francis Summer Classic.
