Rockaway Brings Hope to the Warriors
They came, they saw, they had fun! Last Thursday, the community welcomed Hope for the Warriors to town and honored our wounded veterans with a warm welcome parade, followed by a weekend chock-full of fun activities. On Thursday, July 12, residents lined the streets to cheer on the warriors as they came through Neponsit, Belle Harbor, Rockaway Park, and Roxbury and Breezy Point, and so marked the
start of the Hope for the Warriors weekend. The weekend included adaptive surfing lessons from AmpSurf, kayaking and paddleboarding, plus sailing and fishing provided by the Rockaway Point Yacht Club. The warriors were also treated to a dinner cruise around the city on board the Star of New York, catered by Ludwig’s Catering. The weekend ended with a memorial service at the Breezy Point September 11 Memorial, led by Blessed Trinity Parish. Organizers, volunteers, many local businesses and a large donation by the Gary Sinise Foundation make this event possible each year and enjoyable to all involved, from those cheering the warriors on at the parade, to the participants and the volunteers. “It was awesome to welcome all of those superheroes to Rockaway,” local little girl, Lily Levasseur, said, as she and her family and friends cheered on the warriors during Thursday’s parade. Participants also had a great time. “I enjoyed a totally awe-

some weekend with Hope for Warriors,” Shirley Ferguson of Norristown, PA said. “Even the surfing! Our first time but we had a great time! What inspired us to surf is seeing my son-in-law and the other wounded veterans that have been through war and got hurt, but keep going. So I said to myself, I’m going for it for them!” Joey Mac, a Hope for the Warriors staff member, said, “Thank you to everyone that made this
event possible! My NYC staff and I spent a fantastic weekend with these amazing Warriors and their families. To hear and witness veterans overcoming their challenges and hardships became the biggest highlight of my weekend. These warriors continue to inspire me and our great nation! Semper Fi!” Congratulations to all on yet another successful warriors weekend!

Summer Fun in Rockaway Beach Some beaches may be closed in Rockaway Beach, but there’s still plenty to do to have fun in the sun. NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, Queens Library, and the Friends of Rockaway Beach have teamed up to bring “Summer Fun at Rockaway Beach” at Beach 98th Street. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday though August 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
all are welcome to have fun in the sun (or in the shade) in this new activity center. You’ll find lawn games, many custom-built by John Cori and Eddy Pastore, like shuffleboard, Connect Four, table tennis, volleyball and others. Plus there's a kid's play area and activity center, or you can even pick up a book from Queens Library. Photos by Daniel Avila/NYC Parks and Katie McFadden.

***** You've all seen Geoff Rawling's work on various murals around the neighborhood, and of course, Whalemina. Now he'll have his own gallery display at Rustwoods General Store Gallery on Beach 97th Street starting this Thursday and running through August 1. There’ll be music by The BEasy band starting at 7 p.m. for the opening on Thursday. ***** Reunion news: Plans for a 1968 St. Francis de Sales reunion are underway. It’s set for September 22. A Mass will be held at 5:30 p.m. for the fifteen members of the class who’ve since died. A cocktail reception will follow at Jameson’s. The cost for the reception is $70. You can call 646-296-8690 for more info. ***** Hello Captain Hall. The 100th
Precinct has a new Commanding Officer and we wish Louron Hall all the best. He said hello to the community via Twitter, “I’m so excited to be a part of this community and can’t wait to get to meet you!” ***** You know the old Yogi Berra line, “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.” Locals know weekdays are the best times to patronize pubs and restaurants. On weekends, the best time to get a good seat is right after a thunderstorm. The DFDs flock home and locals take advantage. ***** It’s a farm affair. The Campaign Against Hunger is holding an event on July 31 at Far Rock Farm, 385 Beach 45th Street. Reverend Evan D. Gray of the Macedonia Baptist Church and Camesha Grant of the Food Bank will be the honorees. There will be food & drinks, live music and a farm market. Tickets can be purchased at bedstuyagainsthunger.org/farm-affair. (If you haven’t been to the farms/gardens
on Beach 45th Street, you’re missing out!) ***** So, you can sometimes have a whole ferry and crew to yourself. Even in the middle of the summer. One person (one!), was on the 10:45 a.m. from the city on Tuesday. Our friend tells us she was happy for all the room but she did say it was weird. We asked NYCFerry about it but never heard back. No way, no how, does a ferry on a summer day go empty unless there was a mix-up. We wonder if the Rockaway-bound crowd was sent to New Jersey! ***** More than $30,000 was raised at the Thrilla At Camilla, the FDNY boxing exhibition last Friday. The funds go to Building Homes for Heroes, the organization that builds or modifies homes, and gifts them, mortgage-free, to veterans and their families. ***** You know the Chai Home (aka The Hotel Del Mar), the abandoned oceanfront home on Beach 125th Street? Plans
Page 7 are for upscale senior assisted living. It’ll be a while. ***** Want to know what your neighbors are complaining about? Google 311Buddy and you’ll find a site that maps out where and what people are calling 311 about. Buildings, sanitation, noise, rode caveins —you name it. The map allows you to zoom in and click on a data point so you can tell where the incident existed and the city’s response. ***** Are your shovels and pails ready? The Rockaway Times Sandcastle contest is Sunday, July 29 on Beach 117th Street. Registration begins on the boardwalk at 11 a.m. and the contest starts promptly at noon! Participants have two hours to make whatever their hearts desire, out of sand. So far Uncle Louie G, The Wharf, Lana’s Loft, Far Rock Shop, Avoid the Day Pop-up Bookstore, Mazzone Hardware and Zingara Vintage have generously donated prizes for winners!

‘The Best Dressed Man in Rockaway’ By Katie McFadden
There’s nothing aloof about a man in a flamingo-print suit. Owen Loof, dubbed the “Best Dressed Man in Rockaway” by many, is bound to catch your eye if you pass him dancing at one of the boardwalk concessions, appearing as an extra in films or television shows like Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, singing or doing stand up at a local open mic or say, crowdsurfing at a Flogging Molly concert. But it’s not just his dance moves, talent and carefree approach to life that makes people do a double-take and smile. It’s his flashy wardrobe featuring fun, bright printed suits with flamingos and palm trees to orange pineapples to glittery shamrocks and more, that really grabs people’s attention. And the man of many suits has the personality to match the wardrobe. Last weekend, Loof was spotted at Low Tide Bar sporting his bright orange suit with yellow
pineapples while dancing as Wine With Sue played. About a month ago, the 68-year-old was lifted by two guys at a Dropkick Murphy’s/ Flogging Molly concert while wearing one of his shamrock suits, and was sent flying above the crowd as the band dedicated a song to him. He was spotted sporting a similar suit at the Rockaway Irish Festival in June. However, this all started with a couple of flamingos in 2017. Loof showed up to Caracas on Monday evening, donning the suit that started it all, to talk to The Rockaway Times about the man behind the getup. From his pants to his tie to his jacket, Loof was covered in a sky blue print with bright pink flamingoes, topped with a white hat and white dress shoes to match, when he explained how this all began. “I went to a sketch comedy show in Manhattan and they had an open mic, and I said, ‘gee, I wonder if I could do that. I started going to more comedy clubs to get a feel for what was

going on and noticed that everyone looked like a shlub, wearing dirty t-shirts, backwards baseball hats and sneakers. I began to wonder what I could do so that, even if I wasn’t funny, I would stand out. I remember burlesque performer, Gypsy Lee Rose saying ‘you gotta have a gimmick.’ Local Anne Lyons emailed me a picture of this suit on the Kohls website. So I went to the store and it was the last one they had and it was my size. That was the first one,” Loof said. Before he knew it, he had bright red suit with Christmas trees for the holidays, a bat suit and a pumpkin-print suit for Halloween, suits with shamrocks for all of Rockaway’s Irish-themed events, tropical summer suits, a sleek, flashy blue jacket, a floral jacket that he wears with a yellow vest and bow tie, and many more. He soon found that with the suits, comes an unexpected perk. “When I started going out dressed like this, I discovered that this happens…,” he said, before pulling out a picture of himself wearing a gold and color-splashed jacket and
matching bow tie, while standing next to a young, beautiful blonde woman he met at Irish Day in Long Beach. “These beautiful women suddenly want to take their picture with me,” he said, adding, “I never ask them to take a picture.” But it’s not just pictures that the ladies want. “This woman I met at Long Beach asked me to dance with her twice that day. I don’t even know her name,” he said. “My friends will joke, saying, oh, did you get her number? I didn’t get her number. She was 26 years old! If she wanted to go out with me, I would be creeped out,” he said with a laugh. “It’s not about that. Do you see the smile on her face?” he said, referring to the blonde in the photo. “That’s what it’s about. I want to make people smile and make people happy.” Loof says at an event he went to last weekend, about 20 different ladies asked him to dance, with husbands even encouraging them. “Recently a woman came up to me and said her date doesn’t dance and said, Continued on page 9

‘will you dance with me?’ So we danced. And I told her that when I met my wife, I couldn’t dance. I didn’t want to dance, but my wife always wanted to, and when we went out, she danced with other people. I didn’t like that. So I learned how to dance so she would dance with me,” Loof said. She wouldn’t want me sitting in the house, crying. She’d want me to be happy and I’m having a good time. But I would give this all up and stop doing it to have her back,” Loof, who still wears his wedding ring wherever he goes, said. Loof has seemingly always had a knack for entertaining. In 2004, the Rockaway native and current resident, moved to Hawaii with Peggy to get away from the cold weather. Although he had retired after a 27-year career with the NYC Transit Authority, he picked up a second career as a history teacher in Oahu. “Obviously I was not your conventional teacher. Jokes were always a part of what I was teaching. I don’t know how much history my students will remember, but they’ll remember the jokes,” he said. ground experience for the open mic comedy events he later dabbled in when living back in New York City and trying to find his smile again after the loss of his wife. That open mic soon turned into an opportunity to sing.
Some may find Loof singing a song called “Sheila” whenever local band Squid is playing. The song was inspired by a woman he met while working as an extra for the recent film, The Greatest Showman. “We started going out and the second night at her apartment, she says, ‘I can’t kiss you until you get your teeth fixed.” So he did. And without an explanation, Sheila said she didn't want to continue seeing him. “She didn’t stick around to see the new smile,” he said. However, many others around town have seen it, and it sure is infectious. Or maybe it’s the suits. Or his ability to dance and tell jokes. But whatever it is, one thing is for sure… Rockaway can’t get enough of Loof and he can’t get enough of making others smile. “I love when people tell me, ‘you made my day,’ or say ‘you’re the best dressed man in Rockaway,’ or ‘I want to grow up to be just like you.’ The dancing, the suits, the taking pictures, I’m just having fun and it’s all about making others happy.”

The Impossible Dream Dear Editor: Gil Hodges’ namesake bridge is evidently as bad as the 1962 Mets team he helped to introduce to New York City. Bike Litter Dear Editor: In only one day after the invasion of the dockless bicycles, one was thrown onto the dunes and another was left near a household’s trash cans. How many more will litter our streets, boardwalk and beach? Danny C Don’t Be That Guy Dear Editor: First, I want to commend our lifeguards for doing a wonderful job all summer, but especially this past Saturday, when the water was very rough from the storm out at sea, and the beaches were very crowded because of the nice weather. I witnessed them going in and out for saves all day. Unfortunately, also on this busy day, in the late afternoon, I witnessed two grown men go into the water and pull a joke on the lifeguards on Beach 127th Street. One man was doing the “dead man’s float,” while another started screaming, “Help! Help!” loud enough for the beach to hear, so the fe-
The Rockaway Times male lifeguard on duty ran in to help them, only for the men to tell her it was a joke. The men then got out of the water and I overheard one of them call the lifeguard a bitch as he stumbled up the beach. He and his group of friends left the beach shortly after. I approached the lifeguard to ask her what had happened. She told me that earlier in the day, she had asked the men to not go past their waist, as all swimmers were told that day, due to the strong rip currents and rough waves. The men apparently didn’t take that request well, one claiming that he was a Navy Seal and he knew how to swim and didn’t have to listen to her. They later pulled this prank in retaliation. Parks Department police were called to the scene, but unfortunately they showed up after the men had already left the beach. This whole scene was shocking, but I was even more shocked to later learn that the man that pulled the prank and called the lifeguard a bitch, actually lives on the block. Shame on you. Whoever this man was, I hope he comes to his senses and offers an apology to the lifeguards for distracting them with this nonsense on a day where the water was dangerous and they were already hard at work, rescuing people that really needed help. Our lifeguards deserve better. Michelle Ryan Ludwigs Love Dear Editor: On Saturday I served food from Ludwig’s Catering for my son’s high school graduation party at my home. I ordered the dinner package special that is advertised in your newspaper. All of my guests enjoyed chicken, eggplant parmigiana, sausage and peppers, and pasta. Yikes! Bikes! Lime and Pace Come to Town By Katie McFadden
What’s the talk of the town? Bikes, and lots of them. On Friday, July 13, the City launched a dockless bike sharing program and Rockaway, usually the last for things, is the first to try it. Following the launch, as many as 150 bikes from companies, Lime and Pace, were scattered throughout the peninsula, sparking mixed reviews from the community. It’s hard to ignore the bright green Lime bikes and the lessflashy white and blue Pace bikes scattered around town. They’re everywhere. So much, so that some thought someone was pulling a prank by seemingly abandoning bicycles around town. But it’s no prank. It’s all part of the Department of Transportation's (DOT) dockless bike sharing pilot program. How does it work? For those with smartphones, download the apps from the two companies—Lime and Pace. With the apps, you sync a credit card to
your account, which will be used to pay for each ride. It costs $1 per half-hour to rent each bike. Each of the bikes come with a GPS system, and maps in the app tell you where to find them if you don’t spot one nearby. Once you find a bike, you use the app to scan the barcode on the bike to unlock it, hop on and ride to your destination. With Lime bikes, you can leave the bike just about anywhere, but be courteous to others by not blocking a parking space, a sidewalk or the entrance of someone’s home or business. Lime bikes come with its own lock that goes around the back tire. Pace bikes can also be left anywhere, but they must be locked as a regular bike, to a bike rack or street pole. Then the next person can come along, using the app, and ride the bike to their destination. “There is no more fitting place in New York City to roll out our dockless bikes than the Rockaways,” Mayor de Blasio said at a press conference at Beach 109th Street on Friday, July 13. “Residents and

visitors alike will now find the Rockaways’ world class beaches, restaurants and other attractions more accessible than ever.” “At ten miles long, the Rockaway Peninsula offers tremendous opportunities – for sun, recreation, delicious food and so much more – but distances are often just too long to walk,” DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said. “With a dockless bike, the miles from Jacob Riis Park
to the A train or from the NYC Ferry dock to one of many great restaurants will seem so much more conquerable and fun. I for one cannot wait to explore those miles on a dockless bike.” On Friday, Pace brought 50 bikes to the peninsula and by the end of the week, there were supposed to be about 200. Lime introduced 100 bikes to the peninsula, but on July 28, a new law Continued on page 13

YIKES! BIKES!
Continued from Page 12 will go into effect that will permit the use of electric, or pedal-assist bikes in New York City. So starting July 28, Rockaway will see even more Lime bikes, but 100 of them will be pedal-assist, which allows a rider to pedal with little effort. These bikes will cost $1 to rent, and then 15 cents per minute to ride. Since the Bike-ocalypse arrived, the reaction from the community has been mixed. Some approve and some are adamantly against it. The Rockaway Times (RT) reached out to those that would be directly impacted by the new bike rental program—local bike rental companies—to get their input. For many years, Paul’s Bicycle Shop on Beach 116th Street, and more recently Boarders, have offered bike rentals. For the past few years, Boarders has offered rentals right out of their Beach 97th concession, and they just started another rental service at the ferry landing on Beach 108th. The RT reached out to the
owners for their take on the program, but Boarders owner, Steve Stathis, did not wanted to comment at this time, and Paul’s Bicycle Shop did not get back to us by press time. However, others have weighed in on their behalf. “The Beach 97th concession on the boardwalk rents bicycles. Support our local business, John Kerrigan said. Another resident pointed out that the local businesses don’t offer rentals for 24 hours like the bike share program, to which Kerrigan suggested buying a bike of your own at Paul’s Bike Shop. Others suggested this program should be used to bring money back into the community. “Shouldn’t a percentage of the proceeds come to Rockaway? Maybe subsidize the bike rental businesses that it is putting out of business, Bert Palummeri said. Others suggested that the money should be use to help protect Rockaway. “If de Blasio promised, in writing, a portion of proceeds from the rentals went to Rockaway's still-recovering process from Sandy (jetties, protection
Page 13
plan, beach erosion), maybe Rockaway residents would feel less resistant and heard, Lizzy Wright said. “Instead it's just taking away from local businesses who rent bikes, besides the fact that they're being left everywhere. The bikes “being left everywhere is a hot-button issue, as some have expressed a fear that someone will get hurt by tripping over a bike left by their property. Others have pointed out that riders need to be responsible with where they leave them. “The biggest problem we have is people who have no respect for others’ property! Use the bike and then park it in a spot that is not in anyone’s way, that’s not in the bay/ocean, on top of a fence or in a tree, Rebecca DeMartino said. Photos of Lime bikes hanging in trees and glimmering under water were being shared on social media, but these were photos from other cities where this program has launched, such as Seattle. Besides a few that were knocked over, there’s been no sign of the bikes being mistreated locally.
In fact, many are thrilled with the new transportation option. “I think they’re a great alternative to taxis/Uber/Lyft. They are also a fraction of the cost, James Supple said. “I took an Uber from Bungalow Bar on Friday and it was a group ride that cost $16. If a Lime Bike was nearby, I would have used the bike. Those that have used it seem to love the convenience. My first experience with Lime Bike happened after an evening at the concessions,James Otton, co-owner of The Fat Cardinal Bakery said. “We didn’t want to walk home, so we gave them a try. It was so easy to use and it was a little fun using the map to find the closest one. It didn’t impact a local business as the other rental sites were closed. We started using them at Fat Cardinal for running quick errands locally since parking can be a nightmare during the summer. Thomas Quinn, also of Fat Cardinal Bakery, also supports the idea, saying, “It’s perfect for Rockaway in the summer!

Residents Demand Action in Wake of Fatal Car Accident By Kami-Leigh Agard
The fatal vehicular accident that resulted in the tragic death of an Arverne resident last week has left the surrounding grief-stricken community not only in shock and disbelief, but in fear of their own lives, and are demanding the DOT to take action now to expedite traffic safety measures. On Wednesday, July 11 at approximately 2 p.m., 63-year-old Valerie Razack was struck and killed by an SUV while crossing Beach 73rd Street, just a mere mile away from her home. According to police, the driver, Peter Lopez, behind the wheel of a 2009 Dodge Durango, was making a left turn off Rockaway Beach Boulevard, when he struck and dragged Razack several feet. She was rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In reaction, just across from the YMCA at the intersection of Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard, on Friday, July 13, The Heart of Rockaway (THOR) civic association held a press conference and vigil with Razack’s family, local residents, Arverne By The Sea (ABTS) HOA reps, community leaders and pols to honor Razack’s life and to express their frustrations
with the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) foot-dragging on enforcing traffic safety measures in the area. Razack’s son, choked with emotion, repeatedly wiping tears from his eyes, while tenderly holding his mother’s portrait in his hands, said, “When my mother came to America, she moved to this very block. I carry this picture because it’s
the only recognizable picture I have of my mother. And because we don’t have any speed cameras and failed laws, I have to keep my mother in a closed casket because she is now unrecognizable. And this picture is all I have of my mother, who supported and raised me. So what is it going to take for us to have a speed camera here? Another death? Another life? Something has to be done now, so this doesn’t happen again.” Edwin Williams, president of ABTS HOA, Palmers Landing, and second vice president of THOR protested, “Somebody is dead. DOT is boasting about all these bike-shares they put in Rockaway, but people can’t even walk in the streets without fear of being killed. You think bicyclists are going to be any safer? “Though he was invited today, our Councilman nor any of his representatives showed Continued on page 15

The woman who died this week could have been my wife, my sister, my mother. There is no Vision Zero in Rockaway, it’s a damn joke. I’m not just angry, I’m terrified for them and everyone in this community. Something needs to be done now! The Rockaway Times (RT) contacted Councilman Donovan Richard’s office and his chief of staff, Manuel Silva said Richards’ office is taking action. “DOT needs to expedite traffic safety measures for this entire area, including Beach Front Road, Silva said. “Right after this tragic accident occurred, we sent a letter to DOT demanding that they take action now. A month ago, we brought in DOT Queens Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia for a tour of the area, and pointed out what was direly needed. We are very concerned, and doing everything we can to expedite DOT’s safety study, so necessary traffic safety measures can be installed. This was very tragic, but you also have to take in consideration that this driver

It was registered in July of 2017, and the notice to proceed was given to the contractor the next month. This is a multi-year project, in which NYC DOT is working with NYC Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and NYS DOT. Anticipated completion date is June 2020. We also asked Mayor de Blasio's office to weigh in as since he’s been serving, the Mayor has called for several safety measures as part of his Vision Zero plan to improve street safety. The Mayor’s press officer responded, “Even one death due to a crash is too many. The Mayor is committed to deepening our Vision Zero initiatives across the city. City agencies are already undertaking significant improvements to reduce fatalities and better protect pedestrians and bikers in this area. At the press conference, St. Rose of Lima student, Tyler Williams, summed up attendees’ anguish and desperation for something to be done with this: “When I try to cross the street, I get scared, but I do know one thing, we do not need another loss. By Peter Galvin, MD
In 1972, Title IX of the Education Amendment Act was passed, prohibiting sex discrimination in any higher education program or activity that received federal financial aid. Since then, female athletic participation in the U.S. increased by more than tenfold. What has also increased since then is awareness of the link between athletics, eating disorders (i.e. bulimia and anorexia), and amenorrhea (absence of menstruation, or periods). In 1992, the American College of Sports Medicine coined the term “female athlete triad. This term described the combination of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis (at that time all three factors needed to be present). In 2007, they broadened the definition so that the syndrome can be diagnosed if any of the following are present: low energy availability (with or without an eating disorder),
Female Athlete Triad menstrual dysfunction, or decreased bone mineral density. Recognizing that low energy availability can affect athletes of either sex and have consequences beyond the female reproductive system and skeleton, in 2014, the International Olympic Committee coined the term “relative energy deficiency in sport. Like the female athlete triad, this condition occurs when energy (food) intake falls below energy output to the point that it negatively affects the athlete’s physical and mental health. The female athlete triad can be seen in high school, college, and elite athletes, and is common in sports with subjective judging (gymnastics, figure skating) or sports that emphasize leanness (running). Studies have shown that the prevalence of just one of the three triad components occurs in up to 60 percent of exercising women, two of the components are found in up to 27 percent, and all three in up to 16 percent. Low energy avail-
ability can be intentional (due to eating disorders) or unintentional (due to activities). Prolonged low energy availability is associated with low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. The presence of eating disorders in female athletes is common and is found in up to 30 percent of them as compared to nine percent of the general population. Studies have shown that disordered eating is found in about 46 percent of athletes in sports that emphasize leanness like gymnastics and track as opposed to 19 percent in sports that don’t, like basketball and soccer. Low calorie intake and high-energy output can affect female reproductive hormones, causing menstrual problems and can affect bone mineral density as well. Considering that bone mineral formation peaks by 18 years of age, losing bone mineral before that age can cause severe osteoporosis later in life. Untreated female athlete triad can lead to fatigue, poor sports
performance, and related conditions like osteoporosis and osteopenia, stress fractures, anemia, heart arrhythmias, and amenorrhea. Therefore screening for this syndrome is important. Screening can be done by health professionals and family members alike. Treatment is simple – eat more and exercise less until a healthy balance is restored. Daily caloric intake in athletes should be a minimum of 2000 calories. Some Olympic athletes may require as much as 12,000 calories a day to maintain weight and performance. Goals include a BMI of at least 18.5 in adults and a body weight of at least 90 percent of predicted in adults. Consultation with a dietician is often a good idea for athletes to ensure proper bone health and growth, and those with eating disorders should seek help from a mental health professional. Solace In Good Friends Family is one thing. Friends are another. Knowing that there are people out there who are there for you and to whom you can complain about things and with whom you can just sit and be silent and who don’t judge, let you have your space and who accept you as you, is such a comfort. Take a minute and think about these special people in your life - you may not think they are there but think again. Even if it is someone not in
your daily life and when you talk, the comfort is there. These encounters with good friends are the simple pleasures that help to keep our bodies, minds and hearts balanced. It is not at all about gifts for occasions and keeping up with the births, marriages and deaths, it is about comfort and ease getting through the dayto-day. And the friends who understand us are the gifts. The value in a true friend is more than anyone can ever

spend on a gift. Take a moment to recognize and acknowledge your good friends and send them nourishing intentions. I often say at the end of yoga class to take a deep breath in for the body to be healthy and whole, for the mind to be clear and serve you well, for the heart to be loving and compassionate. These, to me, are the foundation of a balanced self. Perhaps your intention for each of your true friends could be this one. Being a good friend to yourself opens the path to being a good friend to another. “...Learn to be a good friend to yourself, journeying in that place in your soul where there is love, warmth and feeling. May this change you. May it transfigure what is negative, distant, or cold within your heart. May you be brought into real passion, kindness and belonging.” (A Book of Blessings, John O’Donohue) Being a good friend is to be there and present in the pos-
The Rockaway Times itive state mentioned above in the quote by John O’Donohue. Passion, compassion, kindness, caring, acceptance - these are all part of the give-and-take in friendships. And honesty. I really appreciate when a friend can take the step to be honest about something I may not want to hear. When I see or feel something in my gut, I think about how I would bring it to my friend’s attention. I may be wrong, but it is my duty as a friend to point out something that could be harmful or that may not be serving that person. Lightness and a sense of “freeing” can bring joy to a friendship, which is the icing on the cake. Everything doesn’t have to always be so serious and thoughtful between friends and in your own self friend. Lighten up, enjoy and acknowledge the solace in good friends. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

You Don’t Got Mail By Lou Pastina
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin was the first Postmaster General? And that the U.S. Postal Service traces its roots right back to the days of the Revolutionary War? And in fact, it is one of the few government agencies explicitly authorized by the U.S. Constitution? There are over 617,000 employees of the USPS, making it the third largest employer in the U.S., only behind the federal government and Walmart. The USPS operates the largest vehicle fleet in the U.S., if not the world, and is said to deliver more than 150 billon pieces of mail annually through its 31,500 post office locations. So, it was alarming to find out that mail that I put in a mailbox simply never got to its
destination. Over my 60 years here in the U.S., I always assumed that if you put mail in a mailbox, it would somehow magically find its way to its destination. So, when a week went by without any of my bills being paid, I didn’t panic. After two weeks I began to check my online bank account to see if any checks cleared, and when I didn’t see anything clear after three weeks, I thought to myself, “not good.” So, I went to our little Post Office on Beach Channel Drive, where to my surprise some customer was furious and yelling at the poor postal employee. I said to myself, well that’s very rude, I am not going to do that, and inquired politely how mail I put in a box not ten feet away from the Post Office had not been delivered in more than three weeks. Not one envelope in 12 reached their home. I was told that I should check with the Postal Inspector. Now I remember Wilford Brimley on Seinfeld
playing the Postmaster General, and I thought, really? In that episode, Kramer was dealing with a junk mail problem, and ole Wilford was not having any of it. I tried calling but to no avail. Then I noticed that there was a way to complain online with the USPS, so I did. And one night while rehearsing at AB Studios at about 10 p.m., I get a call from the postal inspector. I thought it was a joke, but they explained that they got my email and wanted to follow up and that I should call the number they gave me. And so, I did. The individual was very nice but explained that people have been robbing mailboxes. I said to him, “right outside the post office?” and he said, yes. Well, why not tell people that? He told me to cancel the checks. I told him at $35 a canceled check that was not going to happen. He said they would investigate if any check had been cashed. I thought, well at least they followed up.
With the ever-expanding Rockaway population, faith in the mail delivery system is all-important. I am not someone who believes in paying everything electronically, I just don’t know how anyone can keep track of their finances doing that. Although my youngest has been working a year and has yet to write a check in her life. I guess I am falling behind! Do you remember the old Santa Claus movie (Miracle on 34th Street) when they proved that Santa really did exist by delivering all the mail for Santa to the courtroom? What would have happened if none of it was delivered? Santa wouldn’t have existed? That would simply be too much for me at this point in my life. I believe in Santa, I believe that Wilford Brimley is the Postmaster General and I believe the mail will be delivered here in Rockaway, or at least I hope it will.

Mundy Power City & State, a non-partisan media outlet covering politics and policy in New York, issued a “Queens Power List” naming the top 50 people in Queens who “every politician needs to know.” The only locals to crack the list were Dan Mundy Sr. and Dan Mundy Jr., who have both been so influential as guardians of Jamaica Bay and leaders on environmental issues. Good to see them recognized!

Library Exhibit Explores the Ocean’s Secrets Was that the Titanic floating in front of Peninsula Library on Saturday? Nope. The large inflatable boat was a replica of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES) Resolution, a research trip that takes scientists around the world, to explore our oceans. The inflatable boat, full of informational kiosks about the findings inside, is part of Queens Library’s “In Search of Earth’s Secrets: A PopUp Science Encounter.” This program, sponsored by
the National Science Foundation, highlights the work of the JOIDES Resolution to excite visitors about the process of scientific exploration and discovery. The ship was first launched in 1978 as an oil vessel and converted for scientific use in 1984. The boat is now stationed in New Zealand, but it has made its way around the world, drilling the ocean floor to see what it can tell us about climate change, the seabed’s geology, the deep sea causes of earthquakes and tsunamis and other secrets of
the Earth. While the JOIDES replica was taken down Saturday evening, the informational kiosks that were inside, will remain at Rockaway’s libraries, including Peninsula Branch at Beach 94th Street, Arverne at 312 Beach 54th Street, Far Rockaway at 1637 Central Avenue, and Queens Library for Teens at 2002 Cornaga Avenue, all summer long. “The JOIDES Resolution research vessel is part of the International Ocean Discovery Pro-
gram (IODP). This program is perhaps the most successful international science program the world has ever seen, and it has literally written the book when it comes to climatic and oceanic changes for the past 100 million years (since the time of the dinosaurs),” Dr. Stephen Pekar of Queens College said. “I am thrilled to be able to share how amazing IODP is at this event as I grew up in the Rockaways and have always loved the beauty of this peninsula.”

Thrilla in Camilla Was a Big Hit Organizers say they were able to present a check for $30,000 collected from last year’s event, to the organization that builds mortgage-free homes for wounded veterans that need special accommodations. The sponsors alone, including several local businesses, raised $10,000 and the night’s 50/50 winner donated her winnings of $5,400 back to the cause. U.S. Army Sgt. John
Friday night sure was thrilling as the Thrilla in Camilla went down, with several cops and firefighters boxing it out for a great cause for veterans. On Friday, July 13, hundreds headed to St. Camillus to watch FDNY Bravest Boxing take on the London Metro Police, plus a grudge match between locals, to raise money for Building Homes for Heroes (BHFH).
McGuire presented a $30,000 check for Building Homes for Heroes
DiRaimo and U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. James Byler, who’ve both received homes from BHFH, were on hand to receive all of the funds to give to the organization, as well as FDNY Ret. Capt Jimmy Hayhurst, a volunteer for the organization, who headed his staff collecting the World Middleweight Champion Vito Antuofermo, FDNY Boxing President 50/50 for the night. Bobby McGuire, Bobby Bartell and professional boxer Iran Barkley.
While there were many great matches, the event of the evening was the grudge match between Ryan MacNamara and Danny Quinn. Quinn came on top with a TKO in the second round. For more information about the rest of the results, head to FDNYBoxing. com
