Local Kids Brighten 100th Precinct Officers’ Morning By Katie McFadden

A group of local kids stopped by the NYPD’s 100th Precinct to help them start their week right. In an effort spearheaded by the kids, the Allen families of Broad Channel brought local officers a breakfast feast on Monday, June 29, to show them their support. “In our families, we talk to

our kids often about the important jobs the police do and how supporting them is so important, Erica Allen said. “With everything going on, the kids came to us and asked if we could do something to show the officers that we appreciate them. The families started a 50/50 among family and friends and were able to raise $1000. One

lucky winner took home half, and the Allen families used the other $500 to purchase 10 dozen bagels, plus cream cheeses and butter, 10 dozen donuts and coffee. On Monday morning, the kids, including Michael (12), Charlotte (2), Makenzie (8), Morgan (10), Aubrey (3), Sydney (7), Christopher (5), and Daniel

(11), hand delivered the feast to the officers at the 100th Precinct. “The kids were all so happy that they could do something for the officers. They all wanted to hold the boxes and each hand something to the officers. It was very sweet and we love that this was something that they wanted to do, Allen said.

A Most Unusual Summer Guide Ta-da! The annual Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide has been published and will be delivered today, Thursday July 2. If you get home delivery, it will be delivered to your door on Thursday or Friday and many businesses will have them for distribution. And fear not, you won’t be left without. We will be distributing The Guide through July. Getting the 2020 Guide off the ground wasn’t easy. The Rockaway Times usually starts planning in late February for the popular publication. Until this year, The Guide has made its debut on the Thursday before Memorial Day with summer events already scheduled. This year, our sixth guide, was more like cramming for a test as we squeezed three months of work into 25 days. On June 1, with no clear indication when beaches would open or if businesses would get the greenlight to do what they do, we decided to go full steam ahead, hoping advertisers would have the same faith in good times that we do. The advertisers are the ones who make the Summer Guide go. And boy, did they make it go. This year’s guide is 104 pages and it’s chock full of information including all the new stuff that’s come to Rockaway

since last summer. We’ve got book reviews, neighborhood profiles, a guide to some of the best frozen drinks in Rockaway and all sorts of information in one publication. It’s not the kind of thing you read in one sitting; it’s something to flip through and enjoy all year round. For the cover, we got lucky with a great picture from Margie Daly. Previous Summer Guides have had timeless photos of bikes, rainbows, the surf, and beach. This year’s photo is more timely than timeless and captures a time we won’t forget. It so happens the photographer, Margie, knows the subject pretty well: it’s her daughter, Melanie. You’ll have to read The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide to learn the touching story behind the photo. Mary Ellen Olsen took the reins from Pat McVeigh in coordinating all the moving parts to get The Summer Guide done. And she managed to do it 25 days. Amazing. Katie McFadden keeps The Guide fresh every year and our sales team of Fred, Rick, and Johnny O contacted just about every business in town. Probably more than once. Their tenacity paid off and we’re thrilled to say we have quite a few businesses advertising with use for the first time in this year’s guide. A lot of things are different these days but summer is here and so is The Rockaway Times Summer Guide. Enjoy!

100th Precinct Captain Talks Crime Increase at Virtual Meeting By Katie McFadden

For the first time since February, the 100th Precinct Community Council held its monthly meeting, and for the first time ever, the meeting went digital in the age of coronavirus where Zoom meetings are a norm. With plenty to catch up on, the meeting was chock full of information relating to crime and other policing issues within the confines of the 100th Precinct. At least 30 people logged in to the virtual meeting, including community members, local leaders, officers from the 100th Precinct, Parks Department Rockaway Administrator Eric Peterson and others. 100th Precinct Community Council president Kathy Heavey kicked off the meeting with the pledge of allegiance. Heavey welcomed back everyone after several months that included coronavirus shutdowns, the murder of George Floyd, which she called a “horrific act,” and the protests that followed. “I hope in all this we can all look within ourselves to determine how to be a catalyst for change. Our diversity should make us stronger so we can live as one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for everyone,” she said. She also made some announcements including the postponement of National Night Out Against Crime, which would have been held on August 4. She also announced some staff changes, including the promotion of longtime 100th Precinct Community Affairs Officer Danny Smyth, who is now the sergeant at the 114th Precinct. He has been replaced by Officer Claudio Diaz. Heavey also welcomed Captain Jeremy Kivlin as the new executive officer of the 100th Precinct. She then introduced Captain Louron Hall, who provided updates on recent occurrences within the precinct. “Last week

was a rough week,” he said, acknowledging the alleged chokehold arrest involving 100th Precinct Officer Afanador. Hall explained that Afanador was suspended and then arrested following the incident. Hall then went into local shooting incidents, including three shootings last week, with five victims. All were nonfatal. One arrest has been made in one incident. In another, during a barbecue around Carleton Manor, three individuals were shot, including a known gang member, so it is believed this was gang related. Hall explained that they’re having a hard time identifying the two suspects caught on video in this incident, as they were both wearing face masks. “We’re hoping with more video canvassing and cooperation from the community, it will aid in the apprehension of the two individuals,” Hall said. Hall spoke of a slight uptick in crime this year, up to 215 crimes this year, compared to 209 at the same point last year. Last week, there were 15 crimes compared to seven during the same week last year. Over a 28-day period, crimes have increased by nine, from 38 last year to 47 this year for the same period. In this 28-day period, there was one homicide, stemming from a roommate altercation over the cleanliness of a room. A fight ensued and a victim was pushed to the ground, hitting his head, and leading to injuries that left him hospitalized. The victim later died, so the crime is now being treated as a homicide and an arrest was made. There have been five robberies in the past 28 days. One involved two individuals who Continued on page 14

***** Happy 4th of July. ***** Heads up. Parking restrictions are in effect starting Friday this week (12:01 tonight) as the official 4th of July holiday is recognized a day early. ***** The annual Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is now out and will be available at many stores and other locations, including our orange news boxes. If you don’t get one right away, we will be restocking throughout July. Please remember to tell our advertisers you saw their ad. ***** Brooklyn Assemblyman Robert Carroll introduced legislation to curb open container laws while pandemic restrictions are in place. This would allow people to have an adult beverages on boardwalks, beaches, parks,

wherever. To-go drinks could be drunk. (We checked; that’s grammatically correct. We think or thunk). ***** The Rockaway Times got another mention by Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports. Last year, he appeared in a photo with Rockaway Times local legend Suntan Dan Edwards in Saratoga. We noted how Suntan, in his Rockaway Times t-shirt, had dominated the photo and Portnoy tweeted that had we put him “in a body bag.” We sent Portnoy a t-shirt so he wouldn’t be so overmatched the next time. Well, earlier this week he snidely mentioned The Rockaway Times and the t-shirt on Instagram. He was wearing a paisley outfit and boasted about all the local women he had conquered, so to speak. Well, it might have worked in Rockaway NEW JERSEY, where he actually was. This guy really should come to the real Rockaway and go to Whit’s for a pizza review. That could be an epic meetup. ***** We have to our update emergency preparedness notices. In addition to being ready for hur-

ricanes (flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishables, first aid kit) you might add PPEs (personal protective equipment; masks) to your list. If the virus spikes in coming weeks or months, you might think about getting toilet paper and other essentials now, before shortages occur again. ***** A thresher shark, at least seven feet in length, washed up on the beach around Beach 102nd Street on Monday. Some speculated that it was wounded when caught up in a nearby jetty. Of course, lots of the many thousands who saw our photos online seemed shocked that such wildlife would be in ocean waters. The timing was noteworthy as swimming was to be allowed in just two days. ***** Lifeguards at Riis Park are back on duty, as of this past Wednesday. The parking lot is still restricted to 50 percent capacity. Riis Bazaar will have limited food and beverage (including alcohol) services operating as Phase 2 gets underway. ***** Many local places are offering

The Rockaway Times outdoor dining now and some are expanding and converting parking spaces on the street in front of their shops, which is permissible (as long as the spots are not near a fire hydrant) under Phase 2. As of now, these street spots are good through September 8, 2020. ***** There’s sad news to report. Ernie Kiburis, a Department of Sanitation worker at Rockaway's Q14 garage and known to many locals, died in a car crash at Beach 108th/ Rockaway Freeway on Monday afternoon. Our thoughts are with his friends and family. ***** Sign of the times: mask improvising. Especially during the beach season. We’ve seen shirts. Bathing suit tops. Bathing suit bottoms. That’s not to say the people were otherwise undressed. ***** Heads up, eyes open. Tires and rims were removed from a couple of vehicles parked in the Beach 80s near Shore Front Parkway. Honda vehicles seem to be a particular target. Wheel locks are recommended as a deterrent from theft.

A Story With a Nice Ring to It We could all use some good news. It was somewhat of a miracle when the story of a lost engagement ring on the beach, resulted in a happy ending! A woman named Gina Bopp took to local Facebook page, Friends of Rockaway Beach, to ask locals to keep a lookout for her engagement ring that she lost while swimming on Beach 122nd Street on Monday. “It’s not worth much but is invaluable to my family, she wrote. The post followed with many prayers, well wishes and offers of metal detectors to help, but no luck. In the meantime, the woman contacted a company called The Ring Finders on Tuesday. “They reached out to me and we went out looking in the morning, but again, no luck. A group of five different diggers, from all five boroughs, went back around 8 p.m. during low tide, she told The Rockaway Times. Soon after, Bopp received a much-welcomed

phone call from the company, letting her know that her ring was found! Bopp followed up with the Friends of Rockaway Beach group, saying “Thank you for all your prayers and shares! Never think it’s impossible, theringfinders.com are miracle workers!

Riis Returns to the New Normal Riis has returned! Just as with NYC lifeguards, Riis Park’s federal lifeguards returned to keep the beaches safe on Wednesday, July 1, and Riis Park Beach Bazaar has opened more options for beachgoers heading to the Gateway National Recreation Area's beaches. Earlier in the week, the federal lifeguards were on the sand and sea, training for their delayed start on July 1. With lifeguards now back on the chairs, swimming is now permitted at Riis Park. A spokesperson for the National Park Service noted that the parking lot remains restricted to 50% capacity. At the moment, the parking lot is free, and drivers don’t have to pay the usual $10 fee, but fees may start again sometime later this month. The barbeque area at Jacob Riis Park remains closed until further notice. However, there are now more food options for people going to “the People’s Beach.” Although they’re still operating with scaled back food service,

Riis Park Beach Bazaar has a few choices for foodies. Additionally, with the introduction of outdoor dining, they are now permitted to sell alcohol again, so beer gardens are opening and frozens are back on tap, including the coveted Ginni Hendricks. Alcohol is permitted for table service within the Bay 9 East Beer Garden and the Bathhouse West Beer Garden. Bay 9 East will feature an expanded beer garden, providing more space for distanced outdoor dining and drinking, while Bathhouse West will offer an even larger expansion of its beer garden footprint, allowing for additional distanced seating and table service as well. Food will be available for both table service and at dedicated takeout only locations at Bay 9 and the Bathhouse. For food, the winter restaurant, The Dropout, remains, serving up chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs and more. Rockaway Clam Bar has also returned, serving up their trademark lobster rolls and all things

seafood. Cuisine by Claudette is returning with a grab and go only window at Bay 9 West. Locals can get a special discount of $3 off all bowls, just ask! The Bathhouse will eventually have more food options this summer with various food trucks that are yet to be announced, and Wise Clock Café. Unfortunately, Riis will be a little quieter as all concert and DJ events at RPBB remain cancelled until “gatherings” are re-

instated. Riis Park Beach Bazaar and all of its options are open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Beachgoers are encouraged to carry out what they brought in, meaning take your garbage with you! Masks and social distancing are also encouraged. For updates on Riis Park, follow Gateway National Recreation Area on social media. For updates on Riis Bazaar, follow RiisBazaar on social media.

Surfer’s Heroic Rescue Effort Caught on Video By Katie McFadden

It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time that ended with a near-drowning victim making it home to his family, and a surfer becoming a hero. Rockaway Park resident George Hance’s surf session turned into a rescue effort when a young man started struggling in the ocean, and the whole rescue was caught on video. As a bridge painter, George Hance is far from a lifeguard. “I’m actually a terrible swimmer,” he said. However, during the late afternoon of Wednesday, June 24, he became a hero on the waves on an unguarded beach. Hance said he happened to get off of work early that day and was supposed to go for a bike ride with his cousin, but when his buddy asked if he wanted to go surfing, he jumped at the opportunity on the beautiful, hot Monday afternoon. Hance says he just picked up surfing about five years ago. With his nine-foot foam board in tow, he rode down to Beach 69th Street to meet up with his friend, Greg Uva. On days when the waves are good, Hance attaches his GoPro camera to his board to capture good footage during his surf sessions. After about 30 minutes on the waves, he didn’t realize his camera was still on when something bigger than a good wave caught his eye. “I had noticed these three boys when they were in knee-high water and I had mentioned to my buddy how people always go swimming when they shouldn’t. Then I saw them up to their waist and I could see them drifting near the jetty. When you’re near the jetty, the water sucks you out,” Hance said. Then he heard a scream. Unsure if the young men were in trouble, Hance decided to paddle closer. “I was hoping that they were fine, and I was just racing over for no reason. All I could think was to get there as fast as I can. People said I looked calm, but I was 100% panicking. I didn’t want to see a bad outcome. I figured I’d try my hardest,” Hance said. It was when he got closer that Hance’s fears came true. The young men were up to their necks in water. Two of the young men were at-

tempting to help another friend who was struggling while swallowing water. As Hance paddled as fast as he could, he yelled to the boys to climb out by the jetty. Two of the young men were able to pull themselves onto the jetty and walk to the beach, as they watched their other friend struggle from the shoreline. As Hance approached the struggling boy, he thought of his sons as the boy appeared to be close to the age of his own young teen. Hance encouraged the boy to climb on to his surf board. The boy, who appeared weak from trying to stay above the surface, struggled as he grabbed on to the board. At this time, Hance’s friend, Uva approached and helped to keep the boy on the board as Hance moved the board toward the beach. Although feeling panicked himself, with a calm voice, Hance spoke to the boy throughout the effort, saying “A wave’s coming, hold on, stay on the board.” As the boy struggled to recover, he was groaning and

lacked the energy to fully pull himself up onto Hance’s board. “I was trying to catch my breath and at the same time, position him to lay flat on the board. He had zero strength,” Hance said. However, within a few moments, Hance and Uva were able to bring the board to shallow water. As soon as Hance reached the shore, he picked the boy up from under his arms and dragged him to the beach so the boy could sit down and continue to recover. As all three boys sat on the beach, the boy thanked the surfers for helping him. The surfers used it as a learning opportunity and explained the dangers of swimming without lifeguards, how the current near the jetty is known to pull people out, and how a number of people died last year while going into the water on unguarded beaches. They asked the boy if he needed an ambulance, but as he started to catch his breath and recover, they found it wasn’t necessary. Hance says the boys gave him

their names, but as he rode his bike home, replaying the incident in his head as the adrenaline wore off, he forgot them. “All I could think about was what could have happened if God forbid, we hadn’t gone surfing there,” Hance said. When he got home, Hance had realized the whole rescue was on his camera. He decided to share it to Facebook and Instagram for his friends, family and fellow surfers, using “Don’t swim without lifeguards” as the caption. “When I uploaded it, I thought of my friends and family who go to the beach and sometimes you hear about surfers saving someone, but you never see it,” Hance said. It wasn’t long before the video caught attention. “My motherin-law asked if she could share it, so I changed the settings to public and it snowballed,” he said. Hance’s video quickly made its rounds around local social media pages, with more than 150 shares and 11.3K views. Hance says he hopes the now-viral video serves as an important lesson for people to only go swimming when lifeguards are on duty, or at the very least, to know their own limits. “People shouldn’t be in the water when there aren’t lifeguards, but people are going to do what they want, so know your limits. If you’re not a great swimmer, you shouldn’t be out there. You never know with the ocean. I’m not a great swimmer myself, but I go out there with my board and I know my limits. I know there are days I can be out there and days where I shouldn’t be,” he said. “I’m glad this incident had a good outcome. It was a hard lesson and we often hear about drownings, but you rarely hear about the rescues, so it’s good for people to see a good outcome instead,” Hance said. For Hance, it was the first time being in such a situation. “My first time, and hopefully the last. I don’t ever want to see someone in this situation. I’m just happy I was able to be there. Things happen for a reason.” To see the video of Hance’s heroic rescue effort, head to www.facebook.com/george. hance.1

Jaws Dropping! Shark Washes Up on Rockaway Beach By Katie McFadden

Monday’s beautiful beach day sure was Jaws-dropping. Many beachgoers were on high alert when a fin was spotted in the shallows around Rockaway Beach. They got a closer look at the finned creature—a thresher shark—when it later washed up on the shore on Beach 102nd Street, just two days before beaches were officially opened for swimming. Earlier in the day on Monday, June 29, whistles were blaring for people to get out of the water as a shark was spotted in the shallows. According to one Parks Department Security Officer, the shark had been spotted struggling on the Beach 86th jetty. He added that another fin could be seen out in the water nearby. With some help from nearby surfers, the creature was freed. It continued to drift uptown, thrilling beachgoers with the unique sight of a shark so close to shore. By mid-afternoon, the shark was seen rolling around the shoreline on Beach 102nd Street, appearing to be bloody, lethargic and seemingly injured. According to bystanders, Parks Department employees pulled the animal out of the water and on to the sand. The shark, approximately five feet in body, and about 10 feet total with its elongated tail, drew a crowd. The one elongated sickle-shaped fin of the tail is the signature feature of a thresher shark, which are common in the Atlantic Ocean. The creature could be seen flaring its gills and opening and closing its mouth on the sand as it struggled to breathe. Parks Department employees surrounded the animal to keep crowds at a safe distance. As shark strandings are not a common occurrence in Rockaway, officials from the Parks Department made phone calls to various agencies that could provide the proper protocol on what to do with the injured shark. Calls were made to the NY Marine Rescue Center (formerly the Riverhead Foundation) and the Department of Environ-

mental Conservation. After about an hour, the shark died. A front-loader was later brought in to remove the shark’s body from the beach. Thresher sharks are common to the northwest Atlantic Ocean. There are three different species of thresher shark; the common thresher, the big eye thresher and the pelagic thresher. They can grow up to 20 feet long, with their notable long tail, making up about half of their length. They can get up to about 500 lbs. These sharks prefer to hang out in deep, open

waters, but can be seen in the shallows when hunting. With a small mouth and a timid nature, thresher sharks are typically not a threat to humans. They prefer a diet of schooling fish. There is only one recorded incident in which a thresher shark attacked a human, and it was provoked by the person grabbing the shark’s long tail. Their tail is known to cause more damage than their small teeth. Thresher sharks use their tail to their advantage while hunting. They often use their tail to lure prey and will slap prey with the tail

once it is close, until their prey is disabled, before attacking the their meal. While not a threat to humans, humans are a threat to thresher sharks. Although not endangered, thresher sharks are considered to be vulnerable by the World Conservation Union since 2007. This is in part because they are a desirable sport fish that can be eaten. Thresher has sometimes appeared on local menus at restaurants such as Whit’s End. Multiple people who passed by the shark on Monday even asked the Parks Department if they could have it, but Parks declined. Despite their vulnerable status, according to NOAA Fisheries, threshers are currently fished at a recommended level. These sharks are often the prime catch in local fishing tournaments. One such tournament, based out of Point Lookout, LI, was held on Sunday, just one day before Rockaway’s thresher was found. As many as seven thresher sharks were caught during this tournament, the largest being 487 pounds. Some speculated that the shark injured on Monday, may have been one thrown back in the water from Sunday’s tournament due to its smaller size. Others speculated that it was struck by a boat or attacked by a larger shark. Some thought it was injured on the jetty. It is not common for a thresher shark to beach itself. Last summer in California, lifeguards attempted to pull a thresher shark that had beached itself, back into the water. The shark was found dead on a different part of the beach the next day. It is believed this shark had a bacteria-induced brain infection, which caused it to repeatedly beach itself. It is unknown what happened to the shark that washed up on Monday. The NY Marine Rescue Center often responds to reports of marine mammals and sea turtles on local beaches, but when it comes to sharks, it is recommended to call the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at (631) 444-0444.

Community Effort Shows Support for the NYPD By Katie McFadden

On Thursday, June 25, a community-wide effort was used to show local NYPD officers some support. Officers at the 100th Precinct were given gift bags and treats as a thank you from the community. Liz Hanna, of Rockaway Businesses Need You, recently spearheaded an effort selling We Support the NYPD lawn signs around the neighborhood. The signs were created by 2TWINSPrinting, which had been making similar signs to support all first responders through the coronavirus pandemic. With money donated by 2TWINSPrinting from sales of the NYPD signs, plus a cash donation made by Elegante, Hanna and Eileen Murray Savelli were able to make 135 gift bags for the officers at the precinct. Each gift bag contained a Hold the Line t-shirt. The effort was made even sweeter by Mike Adil of Kimo’s Kitchen, which shares the block with the precinct. He made trays

brandished a knife and firearm as they hit and stole a gold chain from a man on Beach 115th Street. The suspects were wearing masks, making them hard to identify. Arrests are close to being made in two of the five robberies. The precinct has seen a 113% increase in felony assaults over the last 28 days, up to 17 this year from eight last year. The recent shootings fall into this, as well as three strangulations, two officers shot at in their vehicle on Beach 66th Street, in which a gang member was arrested, four individuals struck by a blunt object, and one struck by a vehicle. Of the 17, three were domestic violence related, six have resulted in arrests and eight remain under investigation. Burglaries are up 200%, from four to 12 this year. This includes four commercial burglaries and six residential burglaries. Hall highlighted one

of brownies for the officers. Scott Ruscillo, Denise Hock and Laura Kiburis of Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue donated water bottles. Mazzone Hardware donated mini American flags to go in each gift bag. Savelli donated some signs of support and Margie Daly made a wood heart sign to thank the NYPD. On Thursday afternoon, the group, which included Hanna and her niece, Danielle, Democrat District Leader Lew Simon and candidate Jeannette Garramone, Ruscillo, Savelli and 100th Precinct Community Council president Kathy Heavey, went to the 100th Precinct on Beach 94th Street and laid out all of the gifts for the officers, who were appreciative of the effort. ‘We just want you guys to know we totally have your backs. We appreciate you. Appreciation goes a long way,” Hanna told the officers. “I used to own Brown’s Hardware on 116th Street that turned over to Mazzone Hardware and I worked

there a few years. I would make one phone call here and within minutes would get a response. So we know all the good sides of

everything. People want to see all the bad side. But we know all the good side and we really appreciate you.”

example of repeat burglaries at 59-14 Beach Channel Drive, in which a male and female took items from the location. Arrests were made and the individuals were charged but released. “With bail reform, this is a nonviolent crime, so those individuals were out again and we subsequently took another burglary at the same spot. We think it’s the same individuals,” Hall said. Hall touched upon some grand larceny incidents involving cars and property stolen on the beach. As far as the beach incidents go, property was stolen while individuals were in the water or on the boardwalk. Hall said it is difficult to solve these as there are no cameras on the beach. In regard to grand theft auto, there have been three recent incidents, in which two cars were recovered, One involved keys being left in the car, and another involved lost keys that were found and used to open the vehicle. Hall said that residents of the St. John’s Home for Boys have been largely responsible for auto theft, however he foresees this improving

as a repeat offender was recently removed from the facility for an unrelated reason. “We think with his removal, we’re going to see a huge decrease in the theft of cars,” Hall said. A new issue that has been impacting the city, but is now reaching the peninsula, is the theft of rims and tires from cars overnight. There have been three such occurences, including two, this week in which rims and tires were stolen from Honda vehicles near the Dayton Towers at 8600 and 8000 Shore Front Parkway. “These guys are so professional in what they do, it takes less than five minutes for them to take all four rims and tires,” Hall said. He believes this crime hasn’t been prevalent on the peninsula since cars used in these thefts can be captured on bridge cameras, but the cars often have stolen license plates, so it is difficult to trace the suspects. Hall recommends wheel locks and leaving cars in well-lit areas to act as a deterrent. Hall touched upon the hot-button issue of increased fireworks. The 100th Precinct

has seen a 1021% increase in firework-related 911 calls. This means 157 calls this year vs 14 last year, and this doesn’t include 311 complaints. Most of the calls are coming from Sector A (Beach 59th to 90th) and most occur on weekends. In response, Neighborhood Coordination Officers have been deployed to work with regular patrols during those peak days and times to help combat illegal firework use. The forum was then open to questions and concerns. Some brought up the issue of speeding bicycles on the boardwalk. Another asked the captain if he thinks the increase in crime is related to bail reform, to which he said, “Yeah, absolutely.” The captain also presented questions to the members, asking for suggestions on how to better handle community policing in the wake of financial cuts to the NYPD and ongoing concerns. The next 100th precinct Community Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 29, virtually through Zoom. To request an invite, email vp100pctcc@ gmail.com.

CVSR Graduates Celebrate With Car Parade Way to go CVSR Class of 2020! On Thursday, June 25, the Channel View School for Research eighth grade graduating class celebrated virtually and with a parade. In the morning, the students had their virtual graduation ceremony. Those who wanted to continue the celebration then had the option of participating in a parade of cars past the Beach Channel Educational Campus, where CVSR is located. The cars, decked out with signs and balloons and full of

graduates wearing their caps and gowns, lined up on Beach 84th Street with a police escort and continued up Beach Channel Drive, honking horns in celebration of their accomplishment. A few staff members waved and cheered along from the school. The parade ended near the tennis courts, where the graduates passed a large sign on the fence with the class photos of each student. Congratulations CVSR Class of 2020 and good luck on your next steps! Photos by Katie McFadden.

Ask the DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

Psoriasis Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that affects about 3% of the U.S. population and about 125 million people worldwide. While not an autoimmune disease per se, the human immune system plays a large part in the disease process. The most common variant of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, which accounts for more than 80 to 90% of cases. Plaque psoriasis is characterized by red, scaly patches of thickened skin that most commonly occur on extensor surfaces (typically the elbows and knees), but it can also affect the areas between fingers and toes (intertriginous areas), palms, soles, and finger and toe nails, as well as large amounts

of skin on the scalp, trunk, back, and buttocks. Psoriasis affects men and women equally, and adults more than children. Genetic factors play a critical role in the development of the disease, and certain environmental factors can worsen it. How the disease develops is not yet fully understood, however excessive activation of the immune system is thought to be central to disease development. In basic terms, immune system factors activate dendritic cells, which then activate keratinocytes. Once activated, keratinocytes, cells that are responsible for skin formation, proliferate at a rate much higher than normal, causing the forma-

tion of excess, thickened skin. Affected areas of skin are usually well-demarcated and symmetric. In the keobner phenomenon, new psoriasis lesions can develop in areas of skin trauma, such as from scratching, cuts, or pressure. Pruritis (itchiness) can be moderate to severe, especially during exacerbations. Plaques can be so thick on the hands and feet that they limit functioning of these areas. When nails are affected, onycholysis (separation of the nail plate from the nail bed) may occur. One third of psoriasis patients develop psoriatic arthritis, which can lead to debilitating joint destruction. Risk factors include genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors. One study showed the risk of developing psoriasis is 40% if both parents are affected, 14% if one parent is affected, and 6% if a sibling is affected. In genetically susceptible individuals, psoriasis can be exacerbated by skin trauma, infections (streptococcal i.e. strep throat), smoking, certain medications like lithium and interferon, and stress. Treatment for mild disease (less than 3

The Rockaway Times to 5% of skin area affected) is typically steroid creams, vitamin D compounds, keratinolytic agents (skin break down agents), and phototherapy. For many years it has been recognized that sun exposure improves psoriasis, however it also increases skin cancer risk. Targeted phototherapy, which uses specific wavelengths of light and minimizes the wavelengths responsible for skin cancer, has had significant success. Phototherapy is also used for moderate to severe disease. One of the most significant advances in dermatology has been the development and use of biologic agents and oral systemic treatments for moderate to severe psoriasis, which have made the “heartbreak” of psoriasis much less common. While I use the term heartbreak in reference to an old TV commercial, the incidence of debilitating side effects of psoriasis such as depression and inflammatory bowel disease have thankfully decreased significantly. Go, Broad Channel Grads! Story and Photos By Dan Guarino

This year, as we have heard, is different. But Broad Channel grads have come through it. And on Wednesday, June 24, Broad Channel celebrated its graduates from 8th Grade, High School and College, all through the town. As Broad Channel residents lined the streets, first on one side of Cross Bay Boulevard and then the other, the grads and their families came sailing through in a caravan of dozens and dozens of cars. With waves, smiles, honking horns, colorful signs, decorations, banners and balloons, they started off 7 p.m. at the Broad Channel Athletic Club Memorial Field heading southward. Near 20th Road, the raucous procession came about and headed west along the East

side of town and back to the BCAC Field. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department brought up the parade end with lights flashing and sirens blaring. We wanted to “celebrate all of Broad Channel’s graduates with a car parade through town,” noted residents Sabrina Gross and Helen Arena. “We wanted to give them a special send off by lining the Boulevard to cheer for them as they go by. These kids have missed out on so much this Spring and we know our town (would) come together and help them celebrate their graduation!”

Rockaway Phase II

By Lou Pastina

I feel like I’m living in an episode of Seinfeld with Jerry’s parents in Del Boca Vista Phase II development in Florida. Phase II in Rockaway, what does it mean? Well, let me tell you about my day last week after the opening of Phase II. I did things that I haven’t been able to do in a while; and yes, I did them with a mask on, but I did them nonetheless, and that made me feel a little bit normal, whatever that is these days. I was thrilled to get an oil change at Waterview on Beach Channel Drive. Drove right up, got the oil changed in twenty minutes, happy to see the regular folks there who do work on the cars. Feeling happy, I then drove over and got a car wash. Haven’t done that in a while either. Nothing like driving in a clean car to make you feel good.

Pushing my luck, I parked the car and walked over to Ace on 116th Street. Walked right in, no waiting, got my construction bags, and continued to walk south to the Gift is Love. Waltzed through the front door and bought a few items to cheer up the mermaid. Really feeling it now, I continued to walk toward the beach and walked into the RB Surf Shop. Lovely! I love the smell of the Surf Shop, makes you feel like you are really a surfer, which I am definitely not. Picked up a bunch of Rockaway Beach t-shirts for gifts and couldn’t have been happier. Feeling a bit fatigued by all this available shopping, I stopped in to Ciro’s and grabbed a slice, thinking, hey this is almost normal. I stared across the street at the now defunct Lola Star store and felt a little saddened by the loss. I really liked that place, but my eyes drifted down the block to the very end and I noticed a sign I never noticed before, “cell phones repaired.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out my old iPhone with the bulging screen

RESET WITH POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS Our yoga studies teach us about the “chakras” or energy centers that are aligned vertically along the spine and emanate rays of light - colors of the rainbow. (Like the colors on the wall from the sun going through a clear prism.) Each one has a different meaning, issue associated with it, affirmation, etc.

The qualities of our thoughts directly affect how the chakras function, affecting our physical, mental and emotional health. Repeating positive affirmations associated with the “chakras” can help to reset the balance of these energy centers and move the energy through our bodies to balance us and

and thought, why not? I marched down the block and walked into a store that I have only rarely been in during my forty years living in Rockaway. Toward the back was a counter housing a guy who does cell phone repairs, and so I pulled mine out and asked, “can you fix this”? And he said sure, needs a new battery. I was like ok, how much will that cost? And he said $50, come back in twenty minutes. I skipped out of the store realizing I didn’t have to shell out beau-coup bucks for a new phone, and was delighted when I picked up the phone, fully repaired twenty minutes later. As I exited the store, I noticed that the intersection had been fully paved and repaired, and I thought to myself, maybe everything will be ok? Or is this just a dream? This is great, how much better will Phase III be!! I arrived home and noticed a glossy magazine in my mailbox called the Rockaway Advocate published, I believe, by the Rockaway Youth Task Force. It was chock

full of information about what was happening in and around Rockaway, stuff I had no idea about. I don’t know if one of my minnows signed me up for this magazine, but if they did - thank you. In it was an article about the shorefront between 32nd street and 56th street. If you bike the boardwalk down to beach 9th street, there is a huge strip of land that is largely abandoned. The article talked about a development company that will create Arverne East housing between 32nd and 44th Street with a nature preserve to the west to 56th street. The pandemic has delayed the timetable, but it sounded promising. In addition, if the sand replenishment and groin work actually gets done, it will make for a safer season when hurricanes come. I thought, what a great day today was! We can do many of the things we once were able, and dream of great things to come in the future! Hope is a beautiful thing. Welcome Phase II bring on summer! Happy Fourth of July, Rockaway!

make us feel good. It’s the same idea as “daily gratitudes,” which Helen and I have written about many times in this column. Being grateful for everyday things like a hot shower or our comfortable warm bed, family, friends, pets - every single day - saying thank you for the food we eat, etc., continuously, gives us a sense of well-being and joy. Not a one time thing, but all of the time. Same with positive affirmations. I always say, “what we do, say, think, feel become a part of us.” Almost makes us who we are on one level. So, if we repeat gratitudes all of the time, if we repeat positive affirmations all of the time, we will be the better for it. Personally, I feel happier, lighter, more even and balanced. It has become a way of living and I am sharing it with you because it has made a profound difference in the way I wake up in the morning. These are the positive affirmations associated with the “chakras”. You can bring these in to your daily life or create your own. Maybe even start

with one or two and say them to yourself or out loud. I have. I am safe, secure, grounded. I feel. I am free to be me. I can. I am the source of my own power. I love. I am compassionate. I forgive myself. I speak. I listen to my inner sound. I see. I am in the flow. I rely on my inner guidance. I know. I am you, you are me, we are one. Trying to recover and restart now after going through a very scary time, we might feel like we’re on shaky ground. These affirmations provide a powerful focus to come back to - something solid and sure. They also remind us that we are all the same, having these energies in common. Every night before sleep, I repeat these to myself: “I am happy. I am free. I am grateful. I am compassionate. I let go of things that do not serve me. I have inner peace.” May you also have these be a part of you. Namaste.

FarRockNPHC Helps Keep Barbershops & Salons Safer On Thursday, June 25, the Far Rockaway National Pan-Hellenic Council continued their hard work helping the community by distributing free boxes of masks and thermometers to local barbershops and hair salons. The move came a few days after New York City entered Phase II, allowing hair salons and barbershops to resume hair services. "The masks and thermometers can be used for the shop's workers and customers to keep everyone protected and while taking the proper p re c au t i o n s being the fact that Far Rockaway had the second-highest death rate in New York City due to the virus,” FarRockNPHC

founder Curtis Turney-Rentas said. “We want to deeply thank NYC Mayor de Blasio and the New York Association of Chapters of Alpha (NYACOA) for the donation of the masks and the thermometers for us to be able to distribute them out to our local barbershops and hair salons,” Turney-Rentas continued. “It

was a tremendous feeling doing the distribution knowing how much our barbershops and hair salons that are in our community really need them.” Turney-Rentas was joined by FarRockNPHC’s Domonic Josephs and Hakeem Williams to help with the distribution. The group says their efforts will continue this week. “Our job isn't

over. We will be doing another distribution of masks and thermometers up the beach this week. Our goal is to cover all barbershops and hair salons in the entire peninsula,” Turney-Rentas said. says he will get divorced. I believe him, what should I do? I want a partner, a boyfriend and eventually a husband. I don't want to settle or string this along for years and still feel disappointed. By Shane Kulman

Lucy and The Landlord Dear Enchantress, I have a situation with my landlord. It's messy, I'll warn you. So, he was going through a divorce (he said) when I moved in. I believed him, he's been a great landlord, he always does the right thing when it comes to fixing things and getting repairs completed, and I am always grateful. We met while we were out about a year ago, we were at a bar in the city. I was randomly talking about moving, and it was a perfect match of what I wanted and all the details of where I wanted to move, etc. He lives nearby, and seemed so extra helpful about the

house I live in. THEN one evening we talked about our attraction for each other. Well, we became lovers, and since he was in his divorce, I thought it was kind of messy, like don't eat where you sleep, but maybe it was love? So, I went for it. Fast forward, it's eight months later, I find out, he is only separated, him and his wife, they have no kids. But Covid hit, and they still live together. Emotionally, I'm probably more upset than I am willing to admit, and I do not and cannot move, and don't want to. So far, it's just a problem for me, it seems. He is apologetic and still wants to continue our thing and

LASZLO KOVACS ALL TYPES OF DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS SERVICES

Dear Lucy, Yes, messy, and while reading your writing, I also get a sense that you are a grounded person, ready for truth. So, when this man came into your life as a lover, and said he was getting divorced, he either lied or leaned in on semantics of "getting divorced." This can mean it was a living desire in his mind, with no actions to be taken. So you, dear Goddess, get to decide. How important is integrity to you? And it matters the depth at which you have connected to this man emotionally. So, I will focus on that part with him. Are you loving the attention and physical benefits from this man? Do you actually enjoy and appreciate his personality traits? His values? How does he show up for you emotionally? If you were really, really honest with yourself, is he someone that

matches with your values and desires in a partner and a potential husband? Many people like and get attached to the feelings from getting attention from a lover, and having that may seem to feel better than having nothing. I would say, have a conversation with him. Plan a time and a timeframe and set a time together. Don't just spring the conversation on him. And see how that goes, see if he is avoidant, or open- hearted. In regards to what you should do? When it feels right, I would suggest to write out agreements for yourself. What is acceptable and aligned for you (for example, is it ok to date a married man? Is it ok to have a lover that is not truthful?) Really write with no judgment of yourself. Best advice: Move slowly in making decisions and make sure you feel "good" about these decisions when you and your landlord are not together. This old advertisement was sent to us by Rockaway historian, James Supple. This is from a 1928 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Both buildings still exist today, though not quite as what they were. Visitors today will soon be able to stay at The Rockaway Hotel on Beach 108th Street and Rogers on Beach 116th Street. And AirBnB options are also available in Rockaway. Note the phone numbers in the ad, only five numbers. We presume you called and got an operator who would connect the call.

WrestleTalk MUST THE SHOW GO ON? By Eric Jayden Hey Rockaway, let's dive right in as we recap the All Elite Wrestling Show on June 24, 2020 live from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida. Wardlow defeated Luchasaurus Hikaru Shida defeated Red Velvet Colt Cabana/Brodie Lee defeated Joey Janela/Sonny Kiss Cash Wheeler/Dax Harwood defeated Christopher Daniels/ Frankie Kazarian Brian Cage defeated Jon Cruz Matt Hardy defeated Santana The match of the night was Matt Hardy vs Santana. I really enjoyed this match which had a lot of moves and storyline. I have known Santana for years and it was great to see him in the Main Event with this caliber of an opponent. AEW continues to put out a great prod-

uct with great storylines. Let's move on to the topic of the week. Over the course of two weeks, it was reported that about 20 to 25 employees from the World Wrestling Entertainment tested positive for Covid-19. Since the pandemic has started, the world of professional wrestling has been on pause. Right now, the WWE, AEW and Impact Wrestling are the only companies holding televised events. These companies are currently not touring anywhere in the United States but what comes into question… is it safe to still hold professional wrestling events? And at what price? As reported, the WWE had precautions in place but that didn't stop their employees from contracting Covid-19. It has been further noted that the WWE had not encouraged its talent to wear masks during

filming of their televised events that also included developmental wrestlers, friends and family that we use as extras (Fans). During these tough times, I feel that more can be done in regards to keeping the wrestlers and staff safe from contracting Covid-19. This could be done by providing more testing, rotating wrestlers possibly every three to six months and providing housing for those wrestlers being used for televised events in order to minimize travel and possible exposure to the virus. I can understand in the interest of business, “The Show Must Go On” but there

are many other pro wrestling companies out there that have shut down until this pandemic can be controlled. Sometimes we need to think what is best for the safety of the fans and wrestlers. The question of the week comes from Bobby D in Bayswater and he asked, "I know he recently retired, but will the Undertaker ever return back to wrestling?" That's a great question and in wrestling we have a saying "Never Say Never." For decades The Undertaker has entertained us with a great character and brought us many awesome memories. Like you, I will love to see him return but time will tell. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy Have a great week!
