Mazzone Hardware Celebrates Official Opening With Philanthropic Success By Kami-Leigh Agard
Mazzone Ace Hardware opened this past April, but they celebrated their official grand opening event, this past Saturday, July 15, in front of the much-welcomed store on
Beach 116th Street in grandiose philanthropic style, by organizing a fundraising event for Children’s Miracle Network’s (CMN) Northwell Long Island Jewish Hospital. The Rockaway community came out in droves to celebrate the official opening, which featured food, music, giveaways and raffle tickets for a Big Green Egg Grill. More than $2,000 was raised for CMN through the raffle ticket sales. Owner, Matt Mazzone, was on the street, shaking hands and greeting everyone, showing his appreciation for the Rockaway community that immediately embraced Brown’s Hardware’s replacement. “Thank you to the entire Rockaway community for welcoming us with open arms today! Your amazing support helped us raise over $2,000 today for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. A special thank you
to Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato for stopping by, as well as our amazing staff, and sponsors, Big Green Egg and Benjamin Moore Paints. We’re so happy to be a part of this amazing community and have such amazing neighbors!” Mazzone said. Elizabeth Hanna, owner of nowclosed, Brown’s Hardware, was also ecstatic about the

Less Filling, Tastes Great
When I see a Miller Lite can I think of Tab, the rusty carbonated water that was the first diet soda. In doing my exhaustive research for this column, I was shocked to learn Tab is still sold. I don’t think I’ve seen a can since Luke and Laura ran away together on General Hospital. I remember a rumor that the one-calorie per can claim was a bunch of bunk. Someone in a college class said it had more calories than a can of coke and a cupcake. The
class was shocked, and one slightly chunky girl, who must’ve been trying to shed pounds, sighed, “No wonder...” Sales of Tab today are anorexic as Diet Coke, Diet Pepsi and even Diet Mountain Dew have become the choice of the calorie conscious. On the beer side, Miller Lite, the original lite beer, has held up better than Tab. It’s still a popular choice edging out its cousin, Miller Ultra, though it trails Rockaway’s official preferred liquid,
Bud Lite, and the runner-up, Coors Light. (Oh, regular Bud is in the top four but Rockaway Brewing IPA is charging hard!). Miller Lite is my way of bringing up ambivalence. A million years ago, Miller ran an ad campaign with people arguing over what was better about Miller Lite, its taste or that is was less filling. In one of the more memorable commercials, the fiery and opinionated former Yankee manager, Billy Martin, is asked if the beer is better tasting or less filling. Going against type, the uncompromising Martin says “I feel strongly both ways.” Fast forward a million years and I feel like Billy Martin about
summer crowds and Rockaway’s relatively new popularity. Those who live here want more choices for dining, entertainment and shopping but would rather do without the crowds that encourage people to open new places. But that can’t work. My favorite movie theater of all time was the Surfside Cinema at 103rd and the Boulevard. You’d go there and be the only one in the place. It was nice to have a private screening room even if an occasional seat spring gave your ass a surprise once in a while. The reason it’s not my favorite anymore is because it closed about 20 years ago. Shockingly, it couldn’t keep its doors open
just for me. I think it closed while a pair of sneakers of mine were still stuck to the floor. In any case, the place closed because Rockaway by itself didn’t or couldn’t support it. And that’s something to keep in mind. All the choices, the ferry, lots of good stuff has happened because we’ve been discovered. I love it. But boy do I hate beach slobs, traffic, and places that are too packed to get into. So, the Rockaway boom? I love it, I hate it. I feel strongly both ways. But if I’m honest, I gotta embrace the crowds. The good, the bad, and the hipster. Without the crowds, instead of the new hot thing, Rockaway would be another Tab.

***** The Breezy Point Co-op and The Graybeards are sponsoring a Youth Awareness Presentation, on Wednesday, July 26 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Colony Theater. It’s for students in 8th through 12th grade, though college students are welcome as well. Although serious subjects are covered, such as alcohol abuse, it’s presented in entertaining fashion with an illusionist (Jaden Maxwell who appeared on America’s Got Talent) and motivational speaker, Chris Sandy. A parent’s presentation is also scheduled from 8-9 p.m. at the Activity Center. It’s worth noting – this is something young people enjoy! It’s not a chore and has been a hit throughout the country (and yes, the young may learn some valuable lessons!) ***** We were scalded (pun intended!) by a reader because we

The DEP tells us it was because of a water main break on Beach 102nd and RBB. It was fixed the same day. ***** Another reader called to complain about a letter we printed. The letter took bike riders to task for not dismounting at the concessions. The caller talked about the people who walk in the bike lane, and how they shouldn't do that. First, we don’t write the letters and we don’t necessarily endorse the points of view expressed. ***** As for bikes, it’s a lost cause! People tend to gravitate towards the railings and that’s where the bike lanes are. So there will always be people in the bike lanes. Bike riders (most!) weave in and out of people without a problem. If bike riders are reckless and dangerous, law enforcement can take place. But making blanket statements about bike riders is ridiculous.

The project raised more than $50K in 2014 through donations on Kickstarter. It's 2017 and still no tents. We hear a notorious (and previously arrested) “hug thug” has been making the rounds on the beach. His hugs are more like aggressive panhandling. Google his name “Jermaine Himmelstein,” and you’ll find a series of articles of not-so friendly incidents. A woman with a young child was being harassed last Saturday and when a man intervened the hugger threw a chair at him. A Wounded Warrior Wedding By Katie McFadden
On July 8, 2009, an 18-yearold girl sat in a rocking chair outside her family’s bungalow on Beach 109th Street. Having just had all her wisdom teeth removed and struggling to eat a hamburger at a bungalow court barbecue, Jessie Zimmer who described herself as looking like a “chipmunk” at the time, was caught off guard when a handsome man with an English accent took a seat next to her. The man, 22-year-old Craig Richardson, was one of the many wounded soldiers in town for the Wounded Warriors Weekend in Rockaway. Bobby Zimmer, a member of the Graybeards, which was working with the Warriors, connected them with some fellow bungalow residents who were willing to host the soldiers in their seaside homes for the weekend. Some of the soldiers who were hosted at the bungalows were from
Craig and Jessie during the 2009 Wounded Warrior Weekend.
BLESMA, the British Limbless Ex-Servicemen’s Association. Outside one bungalow, something special unfolded. “That’s where the seed was planted. Jessie just had four teeth removed and couldn’t really talk or eat much, but something happened… that look,” Zimmer recalled. “We
just started talking. Not so much about his injuries, but just about life,” Jessie said. She would later learn how Richardson came to be a part of BLESMA. Richardson, who was a senior aircraftsman for the Royal Air Force Regiment, was on a night patrol in Afghanistan in October 2008
when the vehicle he was next to rolled over an IED. He went flying into some tall grass and realized his right foot was up by his hip. Richardson had injured much of the right side of his body. Doctors tried to save his leg, but in November 2008, they had to amputate his right leg below the knee. With the help of physical therapy and a prosthesis, Richardson was able to get back on his feet and participate in the Summer 2009 Wounded Warriors Weekend. Richardson was only down for the weekend and was left with the line, “you’re welcome back anytime.” He took it literally. A month later, Craig and a friend were back in Rockaway for a 12-day stay. “The fact that they came back kind of shocked my dad,” Jessie said. “It was even surprising when I found out Craig was coming back a month later,” Zimmer said. “We realized that we really liked each othContinued on page 9

er, so we kept talking and seeing where it would go,” Jessie said. By Thanksgiving, Richardson was back, again. “I didn’t really know where our relationship was at that point, but one night he told me he loved me,” Jessie said. Shortly after, they called it official and found that love knew no distance. Through many phone calls, plane rides and with Jessie even spending some time studying abroad in England, they were able to work through the distance for five and a half years. “When Craig sat down next to me in that chair, I was at first physically attracted to him, but I got to know him and he’s a good person. I’m the most indecisive person, but when it came to Craig, I was always sure. Something in my bones told me I wanted to be with him. The distance didn’t matter. There was nothing in my mind that would deter me from

On May 7, 2015, their relationship became even more official. “He was over here visiting and he said he wanted to go for a trail ride on a horse. I love horses, but I could never get him to go on one, so I was suspicious. I checked his pockets to see if he had a ring, but there
was nothing there,” Jessie said. “At some point into the ride, he pretended his leg hurt and he hopped off and said he was gonna go pee. I said, ‘you’re joking!’ I’m standing there with the two horses on the trail and he goes off, and then this runner I recognized goes by, so I start talking to her. Craig turned back and had a ring and got down on one knee,” Jessie said. “We thought after that, we could just be together, but the immigration process doesn’t make it easy,” Jessie said. “We had to prove we were a real couple.” On September 8, 2015, Jessie and Richardson got married in a small court ceremony in New York City. “I never changed my name or wore a wedding band because I still wanted to have a traditional wedding,” Jessie said. “We wanted to get married in England because everything in our lives happened in the states. Our lives are in Cranford, NJ, he proposed here, we got married here, so he wanted to bring something across
Page 9 the pond,” she said. “I always dreamed of a spring wedding, but when looking at dates, the wedding planner warned us that spring in England wasn’t that nice, so she gave us more dates and hit upon July 8.” On July 8, 2017, eight years to the day that Richardson sat next to Jessie in the rocking chair, they celebrated with a wedding ceremony at Narborough Hall and Gardens in Norfolk, England, and Jessie officially became a Richardson. The couple was surrounded by friends and family, some of which made the trip from Rockaway, including dad, of course. “The most precious gift a man can ever give away is his child. When Jessie was a little girl on a bike with training wheels, she would say, ‘daddy, stay with me, don’t let me go.’ When we took off the training wheels, I watched her go off into the driveway and then off to school and off to work and then to England. I told Craig, now it’s your job to stay by the bike with Jessie,” Zimmer said.

Beach Etiquette Dear Editor: Please print my Ten Commandments of Beach Etiquette. 1. Thou shalt not shake out beach towels close to thy neighbor: Walk a significant distance away before you do this and walk a significant distance away from people before you spray sunscreen. 2. If morbidly obese with rolls of flesh hanging over your suit, thou shalt cover-up. 3. Thou shalt always plant thyself at least five yards away from other beachgoers on holiday weekends: We’ll give you 10 yards on regular beach days. 4. Thou shalt not (and I mean not never ever) feed the seagulls: Or let your kids feed them. This is one of the most egregious offenses on the beaches. 5. Thou shalt not change at the beach: No amount of shielding you with a towel is going to hide the fact that you are actually doing on the beach what you should have done before you got here. 6. Thou shalt not bring dogs on the beach. Period: Except for the few specifically designated dog beaches in New Jersey. A beach with human beings is no place for a dog. 7. Thou shalt not fly drones over the beach: Drones may be fun. They may be cool, but it bothers people and infringes on their privacy to look up and see a little mini aircraft taking photos of them. Not to mention the fact that it’s at a horrible angle. 8. Thou shalt not rest hot feet on another’s beach towel or blanket. 9. Thou shalt move scream-

Clean Up The Lot Dear Editor: I keep hearing about Far Rockaway’s revitalization and all the money that will pour into the area. Coming back from Nassau County recently, I wound up passing through the shopping center lot. It was filled with garbage right outside Dunkin Donuts. I suggest they hire someone to clean the lot. Blue Bus Project Comes to Town
Some may have noticed a blue school bus parked near the boardwalk at Beach 94th Street last weekend. The vehicle is part of the Blue Bus Project, a cultural vehicle that takes artistic expression on the road. The Blue Bus Project will be in Rockaway for the next few weeks for RE(F)USE ME!, a series of sustainable art workshops for the youth, aimed at raising public awareness on recycling and re-purposing materials. The main goal of the workshops is to spark conversation about waste and, through art, to motivate participants to think about their environment and how to col-
lectively get involved in their community. The workshops are held at the Blue Bus, a school bus that functions as a mobile art gallery and incubator that provides a safe space for artists and communities to merge. The bus made its first appearance on July 16, to complement the 14 Sculptors outdoor art gallery along Shore Front Parkway. Over the next few weeks, workshops of different themes will take place at the bus while it is parked at various park locations. The RE(F)USE ME workshops will run during summer school break as a way to give kids, whose families cannot afford to send them to summer
camp, an opportunity to have a fun, interactive and educational experience during their vacation. The workshops take place in four locations to show how different areas of a larger community can come together and connect through an invisible web made of art with a social purpose. The overall intention is to bring elements of everyday life directly into an artwork. The work done in each individual workshop will culminate in the creation of a sculpture. The final unveiling will be held on August 6 at Beach 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The workshops, all from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will be on Saturday, July 22 at Beach 30th Street Playground, Saturday, July 29 at Bayswater Park, Sunday, July 30 at 59th Street Playground and Saturday, August 5 at Hammel Playground. The artists hosting these workshops include Annalisa Iadicicco, Natasha Lardera, Chris Villafuerte, Maria Liebana and Daniel Valle.
Why was Rockaway chosen for this project? It coincides with the 14 Sculptors art exhibit, which aims to bring art to the community, while also educating the public. Rockaway draws large crowds and the beaches have become increasingly dirty, with people leaving trash behind. Despite beach cleanups and Parks Department efforts to add more garbage cans, the problem continues. Things like cigarette butts, used plastic cups, forgotten toys and morsels of food are left behind each day. This waste winds up in the ocean, resulting in a negative impact on marine life. The Blue Bus Project aims to educate the public on the importance of cleaning up and recycling, while doing it in an artistic manner. Thundering Out What is Needed for the Special-Needs Community By Kami-Leigh Agard
What does the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel lack for special-needs children and their families? Trishia Bermudez, a local mom of five-year-old Matthew with chromosome 3 deletion, and founder and CEO of Perfect Piece of the Puzzle, Inc., (PPOP), is pulling no punches in her determination to find out, and change the local community from a barren desert — to a bountiful oasis — providing support, services and resources for all families with special-needs children. This past Saturday, July 15 at Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s Rockaway Beach office, PPOP hosted a workshop and focus group, funded by a grant from the Citizens Committee for NYC, with a panel of Department of Education (DOE) specialists, ser-

It would be nice to have a place locally where parents can have that ‘let my hair down moment,’ where they could have a few hours of reprieve while their child is in a safe space having fun,” she said. Other parents voiced their concerns about the lack of training and commitment from direct support professionals (DSPs), sent by special-needs service agencies outside of Rockaway. “Many of those DSPs, are young girls just out of high school, who see their job as better than flipping burgers,” said one parent. “Most of them, who live in the Bronx, Brooklyn or other parts of Queens, only get a mere four hours of agency training, and after a few months quit with the excuse that Rockaway is too far of a commute. Who can blame them, especially since they only get a hourly wage of $11 to take care of children and adults requiring a high level of care and dedication,” she said. Other parents complained about the public school education system. “We need more direction and support with the DOE’s District 75 school system. Rockaway only has a few schools, and you see some children being placed in a 6 to 1 ratio ‘fishbowl’ classroom setting, while others are thrown into a general classroom setting with no services, and ultimately get lost in the system, and even bullied because of their disability. It’s heartbreaking, and ultimately our children need more!” another parent exclaimed. “Assemblywoman Pheffer Amato shared that she once worked in the local schools as a paraprofessional for special-needs students. “I understand your frustration. As a paraprofessional, I witnessed how these children and families were in constant crisis because of the lack of progression. What Trishia is doing, starting from a grassroots lev-

Why not get the local YMCA, churches and other organizations with the space available for what our special-needs community needs?” Bermudez founded PPOP after her frustration with finding services locally for her son. In fact, after my son was literally thrown out of several daycares due to the high level of care he needed, I thankfully got him in one at St. Mary’s Children Hospital in Bayside. However, it is 21 miles away with a long commute that has me stressed and feeling disempowered,” Bermudez said. “And now, because he is turning five, I am battling with the DOE to place him in private school. “My mom, Brenda Brathwaite, who is my biggest support and serves as POPP’s board president, witnessed my struggles in securing quality services for Matthew, and motivated me to create something for other parents like me, frustrated with the lack of resources and services in Rockaway for their special-needs children. I want the community to know that we are here, and want to know what you think is needed in the community,” Bermudez said. POPP’s next workshop/focus group will be on Saturday, September 16. On Homeopathic Products
Ask the DOC

Last August an infant was rushed to the hospital after having prolonged seizures at home. She had no medical issues or allergies but had recently been given homeopathic teething tablets for the first time. The pills, which contained the poisonous plant belladonna, were the only medication she had taken. Luckily she survived but her father filed a MedWatch adverse event report with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). That report triggered an FDA investigation, which found more than 400 reports of adverse events in infants and children associated with homeopathic products over the last six years. The events included seizures, tremors, fevers, shortness of breath, lethargy and sleepiness, constipation, vomiting, agitation, and irritability. Ten of the events resulted in the death of the child. On Sep-
tember 30 of last year, the FDA issued a warning to consumers that homeopathic teething products pose a significant risk to infants and children. The agency recommended that consumers stop using the products. Following the FDA warning, CVS Pharmacy voluntarily removed all homeopathic teething products from its shelves. Less than two weeks later, Hyland’s, a popular purveyor of homeopathic teething products, discontinued its line of products in the USA. In late November, Raritan Pharmaceuticals issued a voluntary recall of three homeopathic teething and ear relief products for infants and children after the FDA found varying levels of belladonna in the products. In December the FDA press officer said, “The FDA is concerned about inconsistent amounts of belladonna, a potentially toxic ingredient if present in sufficient quantities, in homeopathic products.” Then in January the FDA announced that
it found levels of belladonna in homeopathic teething products that “far exceeded” the amount stated on the label. The agency asked Standard Homeopathic Company, which makes Hyland’s products, to recall its teething products. The company refused. Unbelievably, the FDA does not have the authority to force a recall of dangerous products. The research into homeopathic products is still ongoing. Many homeopathic products are supposed to be diluted before use in order to be safe for use on humans. Problems have arisen in the past when the products are not properly diluted. For example, in the teething products, the active ingredient is belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade. The active ingredient in belladonna is atropine, which can be fatal if taken at an improperly high dosage. Since 2009 the FDA has issued nearly 40 warnings to consumers regarding homeopathic products. In 2009 the
FDA advised that consumers stop using zinc-containing cold remedies (i.e. Zicam) after it received more than 130 reports of loss of the sense of smell after using the products. In 2014 the FDA warned consumers to stop using Pleo Homeopathic products because they were found to contain penicillin and/or its derivatives, which could be life-threatening to penicillin-allergic individuals. Just like dietary supplements, there is little to no credible research showing that homeopathic products actually work. Like most over-the-counter medications, homeopathic products are not regulated by the FDA and quality control in manufacturing the products may be lacking. So if you use these products be careful to dilute them as per the instructions and be aware that they may contain more or less of what the label says they contain. ANTON DIETRICH This past weekend the Broad Channel VFW hosted a barbecue for several busloads of disabled veterans residing at the St. Albans Veterans Hospital Living Center. During the BBQ, I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Mr. Anton Dietrich who recalls how after being drafted into the United States Army

The Rockaway Times as a young man in the 1940's, he trained with a shaped piece of wood instead of an actual rifle because actual weapons were hard to come by, even for the Army. This was because of the drastic reductions in defense spending after WWI, exacerbated by the 1941 Lend-Lease Act, which saw a great deal of American-made arms and defense materials being transferred without compensation to Great Britain, China, the Soviet Union. Ultimately the Army got its act together and after Anton surrendered his wooden replica for a real rifle he was transferred to the U.S. Army 9th Infantry Division. During 1942, Anton and the other "Old Reliables" of the 9th Division participated in the invasion of North Africa where Anton was somewhat surprised to find that in addition to the Germans, his unit also became embroiled in battles in the elements of the Vichy French. In 1943, Anton and the 9th Division fought both the Germans and Italian soldiers in order to provide a path for the upcoming Allied invasion of Italy. After the successful conclusion of the Sicily campaign, Anton and the rest of the 9th Division stood down for some well-deserved rest and recreation but history was not yet done with Anton and the rest of the 9th as re-training soon followed. In late 1943 they were at sea again heading this time for England to prepare for the fighting in Normandy, France. Because the 9th Infantry Division was an already battle-hardened outfit, with several combat campaigns already under their belts, they did not land on the beaches during D-Day when the invasion of France began early on the morning of June 6, 1944. Anton and the rest of the 9th Division instead landed on Utah Beach on D-Day four days (June 10th) as part of two U.S. Infantry Divisions now on the beachhead with previous combat experience with orders to fight their way inland. Continued from Page 18 drive inland several weeks after landing on Utah Beach that the war ended for Anton. As Anton explained it, "I was hit by a mortar shell which nearly tore my right arm off. I still to this day don't know how but I was able to get up and run about 100 feet to the command post where a buddy of mine, after applying a tourniquet, kicked down a wooden door and used it as a stretcher to transport me to a field medic who saved my life." A Purple Heart and several surgeries later, medical staff were able to save Anton's arm but the nerve damage was so severe that his right arm remained totally disabled. Seventy-three years after returning home from the war in Europe, Mr. Dietrich is 98 years old and quickly lets you know that he is looking forward to celebrating his 99th birthday this coming

Anton was accompanied to the BBQ by his daughter Pauline who sat by her father's side at the picnic table the whole time he was telling us his story with tears of pride glistening in her eyes. To those who meet him for the first time, Anton is an ordinary man. But for those of us who take the time to get to know him we find that he is actually an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. And so this week, on behalf of all the residents of Broad Channel, I will simply close by saying - "Thank You Anton Dietrich!"

Belle Harbor Chemists Celebrates 20 Years By Katie McFadden
Twenty years ago, Rich Longo and Frank Stella took a chance on Rockaway. On April 4, 1997, they opened Belle Harbor Chemists and for the past two decades, the familiar friendly faces of the family-owned pharmacy and their personalized service have made Belle Harbor Chemists a neighborhood staple. For 20 years, Belle Harbor Chemists has served as the neighborhood pharmacy for those uptown. It’s a quick stop for everyday over the counter needs, and of course, prescriptions, and some may prefer them for their quick turnaround, online refills and even delivery service. Those who’ve been around may remember back in 1997 when the new pharmacy replaced the Belle Harbor Pharmacy. Longo and Stella, who come from a family of pharmacists, were both from Brooklyn, but thought Rockaway would be a good fit for their own pharmacy. Both were familiar with the neighborhood and business as they had worked at the pharmacy before owning it. “I worked with the old owner part time and I always thought Rockaway was a fantastic town. The people are so easy to deal with and there weren’t many stores around. In Brooklyn, there was a pharmacy on almost every corner. So this made Rockaway appealing, but it was really the people and how they treated me when I worked here that led me to believe that it would be a very successful pharmacy,” Longo said. After 20 years in business, even while competing with larger chains and online pharmaceutical sales, it’s clear that the small family-owned business has done something right. Belle Harbor Chemists started on a small scale. “We used to fill a very small amount of prescriptions,” Longo said. But the small pharmacy grew with the neighborhood as locals got to know the staff behind the counter. “We’ve grown with the community. We’d see a
couple that just got married, every once in a while, and now they have kids, so we’ve been lucky enough to take care of parents and their children, and even the parents’ parents. We’ve grown with the generations. We’ve gotten to know and have had to say goodbye to people. We addressed any challenges so that we could become successful. We took on more manpower so we could fill prescriptions more efficiently,” Longo said. The staff and the customer service they provide have kept customers relying on Belle Harbor Chemists for their prescriptions. “We hired a delivery man, Les, whose full time job is to take care of everybody and make sure deliveries are there on time. Our manager, Jen, is here every day, so people have someone that’s constant. Frank and I alternate coming to the store, but customers always have someone familiar to turn to,” Longo said. It’s been that way since the start. “Most of the staff are locals. We had a lady named Pat who was with us from the beginning. She passed away a few years ago, but she was part of the fabric of the store. We also have Laura and Donna, who are both Rockaway locals, which is really nice because they know everyone by name and face.” Longo believes that familiarity and personalized service

is what keeps local families coming back to Belle Harbor Chemists. “We have that mom and pop feel of years ago. Older people tend to love the oneon-one time they get with us. Frank and myself are always here, so they have a friendly face, someone they can talk to, someone who knows what medication they’re on and can have a conversation about their health. For younger families, they like the delivery aspect and the quick service. We have a five to 10 minute wait maximum on all prescriptions, so if a parent needs medicine for their sick kid, we do it as quickly as we can because we understand that you can’t wait to make your children better. This is stuff that large chains can’t offer.” The growth of the business allowed the store to grow as well. Some may remember that Belle Harbor Chemists was originally at 412 Beach 129th Street. The owners were renting that building, but in 2012, they began to build a new pharmacy from the ground up at 449 Beach 129th Street. Starting from the ground up allowed them to build a larger, modern location. “My brotherin-law, Joe, is an architect who designed this place. You can make a bland, vanilla store or put work into it and we chose to put the work in and make it because we consider this the town’s pharmacy. We want
people to feel comfortable when they wait for a prescription,” Longo said. As they built out the store, a major hiccup put construction on hold, but Belle Harbor Chemists was there for the community. “Hurricane Sandy wiped out the old store as we were building the new one, so we rented a trailer that sat in front of the old store and operated out of that. We own another store in Nassau County, so we were still able to get what people needed from our other store. We knew that almost every customer in Rockaway felt the consequences of the storm and that they were going through a terrible time and if they couldn’t get their prescriptions on top of it, it would only add more misery. Living out in Long Island, we felt very lucky that our homes weren’t affected, so we were more than happy to put in more time and energy so that people would have a place to come to at the trailer. We handed out water, gloves and hand warmers. At some point the Department of Health came down and said do what you have to do to take care of the people in this town and we felt empowered by that. It was really rewarding to hear people tell their story and just come and warm up and smile for a while and that’s when we really became a part of this town,” Longo said. Belle Harbor Chemists has been celebrating their 20th year by giving back to the customers with giveaways. For the owners, lasting this long has been a reward in itself. “We know that a lot of business don’t make it and we don’t count every year, but after 20, you can take a breath and say this is a great accomplishment and we’re very happy and proud to make it this long. It’s really a testament to the town we work in. It’s really nice coming to work in Belle Harbor.” Belle Harbor Chemists is located at 449 Beach 129th Street. Serves 2 Ingredients: 1-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 2 large garlic cloves, minced 1 large shallot, minced 4 thin slices prosciutto, minced or center-cut bacon 1-1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup panko crumbs 2 tablespoons sherry or white wine 1 pound fresh scallops Directions: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Place gratin dishes on sheet pan. To make topping, mix together butter, garlic, shallots, prosciutto (or bacon), parsley, lemon juice, salt and pepper

Pat the scallops dry with a paper towel and arrange them in the gratin dishes. Spoon the garlic butter evenly over the top of the scallops. Bake for 1012 minutes until the top is golden and sizzling and the scallops are barely done. If you want the top crustier, put under the broiler until browned. Finish with a squeeze of lemon juice and a sprinkling of parsley and serve right away.

The AmpSurf Breezy Point Chapter will be hosting a surf clinic on Saturday, August 12 at Beach 82nd Street in Rockaway Beach N.Y. from 9 a.m. - 12 noon. AmpSurf works with adults, children and veterans with all kinds of disabilities such as: amputation, visual impairments, autism, spinal cord injuries, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), and Developmental Disabilities. AmpSurf is a unique surfing program that began in Pismo Beach, California 15 years ago by AmpSurf founder, Dana Cum-
mings. He always says, "There is a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing power of the ocean.” Surfing, he notes, can make the participant become stress hardy and help to manage pain." Cummings has trained a cadre of local surfers and skilled water people in the AmpSurf protocols. Instructors have all been trained in Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. If you are interested in participating in the AmpSurf adaptive surfing clinic, you must go on the web site, www.AmpSurf. org and register as a participant for the Rockaway Beach, 82nd Street surf clinic. It is limited to the first 24 participants who sign up on the web site. There will be a $25 deposit to hold your spot that will be refunded if you show up to the surf clinic. The purpose is so that a spot is held for you. If you fail to sign in and attend, the fee is non-refundable.
In 1956 two planes collided over the Grand Canyon as they wanted to get a better view. This resulted in the formation of the FAA. The biggest snowfall ever recorded in Phoenix was one inch, in 1933. Congratulations to Jim Burke, founder of local LGBTQ group Out Rockaway, for being honored at the 2017 Queens Borough Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Pride Event. On June 28, Burke was among five New Yorkers who were honored for their large impact on the LGBTQ community in Queens. Burke founded the local social group Out Rockaway and has done tremendous work to bring the local LGBTQ community together and provide them with a safe, fun outlet to get together for var-
ious social events. Burke also serves on the Queens General Assembly forum, a group representing communities across the borough. Along with Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, City Council members Danny Dromm and Jimmy Van Bramer were on hand to present awards to those who have made a significant impact in the LGBTQ community in Queens at their annual Pride event at Queens Borough Hall. The next Out Rockaway gathering is Saturday, July 22. The group will be having dinner and seeing the Rockaway Theatre Companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest production, The Producers at the Post Theatre in Fort Tilden. I love to paint and travel, but I also love writing so I'm exploring the world of journalism. It's what I want to make my major in college! Maintaining Your Gardening Tools By Artie Wallace
With the summer in full force, not everyone heads to the beach. Some people would rather work in their garden. Though gardening tools are not a major expense, maintaining them is an easy way to save a few dollars and only takes a few minutes after each use. 1- Rinse all gardening tools before storing them â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;til next use. Rinsing will not only remove dirt, it will reduce spreading plant disease from one plant to another. 2- Store your tools where they will be dry, and never put them away until fully dry. Rust is one of the most common reasons for replacing gardening tools. 3- Anything with wood handles, wipe the handles down with a rag dampened with Linseed Oil at the beginning and end of each season. 4- Keep blades and shovels sharpened. A sharpening stone would work great. If you decide to use a grinding
wheel, be careful to not alter the shape of the edge/blade. 5- Paint your tools as needed. If the paint starts to wear, repaint with a Rust-Oleum applying a few thin coats, not one heavy coat. 6- Spray all moving parts with White Lithium Grease (not WD-40 or Liquid Wrench) at the beginning and end of each season. Repeat during the season if needed. 7- Make sure all handles are secure. Most handles are crimped in, if they start to loosen try using a nail and a hammer to indent the metal to the handles. If that doesn't work, pre-drill a hole and put a stainless steel screw in to hold it. Keep those gardening tools in good shape and they will last a lot longer. Happy Gardeningâ&#x20AC;¦.. LIFE BEFORE HEART ATTACK: I was getting ready for my grandson’s birthday, when all of a sudden I became weak. I thought I was coming down with the flu. Before going to sleep, I called my son and told him that something didn’t feel right. We took no chances and called 911. The paramedics arrived and within minutes, I was in cardiac arrest.
I woke up a few days later and after many tests the doctors determined that the upper part of my heart wasn’t sending signals to the bottom part to pump blood, and that’s why my heart stopped. I was fitted with an ICD to treat my irregular heartbeat. After the procedure, I’m back to normal, I’m energetic, and I feel great.

Grateful As you read this column I am on a retreat in Vermont with my daughter Kayla with a group of yogis from Jaya Yoga in Park Slope, my home town. I have gone on this retreat before and it has been one of the most uplifting experiences of my life. We will not know most of the people but will become friends in a short time. It is a lifetime experience without a doubt, and I am with my best friend. Park Slope is a connection I am very proud of since my roots are from this wonderful neighborhood where I learned to be who I
am today. My mom and dad raised seven children in a nurturing, loving, supportive environment. We had the most amazing childhood. Lots of great memories. We vacationed in Rockaway Beach, renting a bungalow where nine of us happily lived and learned to swim in the ocean. I am writing this column on the 30th anniversary of the death of my baby brother John, who was 22 years old when he died in a car accident. It was the most devastating time in our family. His birthday was July 21 and he died on July 14,

giving him a new birthday. I never celebrated or honored when he left his body because the loss of my loving brother hurt too much and I did not feel this was a good day. This year felt different. There was a feeling of acceptance and knowing that his life was full and complete. Death teaches us to love, be happy and live well. I have much love and support in my life. For one thing, I have the most loving family who respects and loves life. We understand one another and take nothing for granted. I also have a yoga community that makes my heart sing. We are at home and at peace together through good times and bad. There is this sense of unity and strength. They are lighthearted and full of life. They are part of who I am. I share everything with them. On this particular day, July 14, I am feeling so much love and generosity. There is a young teacher who is auditioning to teach yoga at the studio before my class starts and her energy is beautiful. I feel it right away but I still need her to demo her teaching. Something tells me to let her teach my class.
The Rockaway Times I know it will be a full house, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s raining out and no one is going to the beach, they are coming to Ocean Bliss to be peaceful and happy. This particular day I am very aware of my brother John and his spirit is strong on this anniversary day. Normally I would share my story with my students but something tells me to share my teaching and be the student. I know this is the right thing to do simply because of her positive energy. It is real and I am listening. I need this teacher to guide a peaceful class full of love. And she does. My brother John was the most generous, loving, happy guy. He opened his heart to all and never judged anyone but was honest and straightforward. His demeanor was one of generosity. He was my hero and my best friend. I will never forget him and will always remember him from this day forward. God needed an angel to look over us and God always has a plan. We are all part of the plan. Trust, believe and accept. It takes time, but be patient and listen to all the signs. I am grateful for this day.

Get Ready, Get Set Family Fun Run Is Friday, July 28 The 14th Annual Graybeards Family Run will be on Friday, July 28 at St. Francis de Sales. This year's edition is special, honoring the memory of Eileen M. Lavin and the theme will be "Always Run with your Heart." The event will begin with Kids’ Races at 6:30 p.m. on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The Rockaway Special Athletes will follow at 6:45 p.m. The 1-Mile Run kicks off at 7 p.m. and is followed by the highlighted 5K, which will complete the Rockaway Running Triple Crown Series. Post-race activities include food and beverages, children's rides, raffles, awards, and music from Gearth, Wind & Fireman, all in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales. The first leg of the 2017
Rockaway Running Triple Crown Series is in the books with Kevin Demic taking the men's title at the Kevin Kearney Rockapulco Run on June 17 and Mia Behm winning the women's race. Next up is Broad Channel Athletic Club's Dawn's Fun Run on Friday, July 21 before the series concludes with the Graybeards Family Run. Summer Classic YEAR 33 UNDERWAY AT ST. FRANCIS The St. Francis Summer Classic is back for its 33rd year. Approximately a thousand players are on one of 84 teams ranging from the Coed 2nd Grade Division to the Young Guns and Legends divisions of the Graybeards. Phil Hughes guides the 2nd Grade Division, which plays in the gym on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays at 5:30 p.m. JoJo O'Grady helms the Boys Grammar Junior division with games in the schoolyard on Mondays at 5:45 p.m. The Girls Grammar Junior fills the same time slot on Tuesdays under the direction of Randy Neiswenter. Getting Wacky on the Waves By Mike Reinhardt
Locals Surf School's second annual Foam-Top Frenzy was a huge success! After some crazy weather last season, this year’s event was moved to July to accommodate a larger crowd of spectators and hecklers alike. Everyone enjoyed weather in the high 80’s and clean waves in the 2-3ft range, perfect conditions for a frenzy. The rules were simple — no “real” surfboards allowed. Competitors were encouraged to ride soft-top surfboards or an alternative craft that resembled a surf board. There were also no typical competition rules of man-on-man heats where points are scored for each successful ride. Instead, there were simply three
awards given out of over the whole competition for best wave, best wipeout, and best alternative craft. This made for a much more relaxed environment where people of all skills levels were encouraged to join with the simple goal of having fun. Right from the start the competition brought about many laughs as people attempted funny moves, crashed into each other and rode countless party waves. After the victors were crowned, everyone headed over to Rockaway’s newest bar, Epstein’s Beach, for the after party. Once again, Locals Surf School and Red Bull were very happy to put on another fun event for the surf community and look forward to more in the future!

The streak was almost finally over. Twenty-plus years of Mudshark dominance over the Orioles and it continued Sunday. On Field 1 the Orioles were up five runs in the 6th inning of Game 1 then blew their lead and lost 10-9. They were done after that and lost Game 2 by the mercy rule. Over on Field 2, Old Head broke their losing streak and won both against the Member Berries, 16-4 and 8-6. No games were played on Field 3 as the Moneyballs won by forfeit against the Chuggernauts. Late game action had The Army breaking their four game skid, sweeping the No-Shows 13-1 and 12-3. In the only set of games that wasn't a sweep, Kings won Game 1, 19-11, and then the Knights of Columbus won Game 2, 10-7. The Misfits blew their lead in the 7th and Morning Wood won, 12-10, and then won Game 2, 10-4. The three teams in the West are almost set for the playoffs, but the East is up for grabs. With only three weeks left, this is what we have on the
schedule this Sunday, July 23. 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Misfits vs Mudsharks - In the past this matchup would be a blowout but this is a new Misfit team. Mudsharks are still hoping to grab the one seed in the West as the Misfits are trying to hold on to a spot in East.
