CROWLEY CONCEDES – RICHARDS WILL BE DEM BP CANDIDATE Elizabeth Crowley conceded the Democratic primary position for Queens Borough President to Donovan Richards on Tuesday, July 21. Her statement reads as follows: “Together, with your help, we ran a very competitive race for Queens borough president. From neighborhood to neighborhood, we shared our ideas and our concerns, we put forward plans, and we renewed our commitment to move our communities forward. We worked hard, and I know our people and our borough will be better for it. “I wanted you to hear it from me first : while the Board of Elections has not officially called the race, and some districts are still getting tallied, the numbers to win are just not with us. I recently called Council Member Donovan Richards to congratulate him and to give him my full support as

he becomes the Democratic nominee for Queens borough president. “From the onset of this campaign, I would have never imagined the year we have all gone through. But I remain hopeful and optimistic not just for myself, but for Queens and the country as a whole. “This was an incredible opportunity. Thank you for your encouragement, thank you for the many hours of volunteering, thank you for donating—this campaign was built on your support.”

Giving Hope for the Warriors Virtually

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Early July is normally the time that Hope for the Warriors comes to town and the Breezy Point and Rockaway communities host wounded veterans for a fun weekend on and around the water. Due to coronavirus, that couldn’t take place this year. So the Breezy Point Cooperative did the next best thing. On Friday, July 10, The Breezy Coop and Ridgewood Savings Bank hosted a virtual concert featuring popular Irish band Shilelagh Law, which often performs at various venues and festivals

in Rockaway. Although in different locations, the band members were able to use satellite to get together and perform together for the virtual show, all for a good cause. The concert was held to support Hope for the Warriors. Throughout the two-hour concert, donations came pouring in. By the end of the show, the band had raised for more $21,000 in donations for the organization that helps those who fought for this country. If you missed it, the whole show can be seen on the Shilelagh Law NYC Facebook page.

Calling for Peace Story and Photos By Theresa Racine

In the wake of an increase in gun violence, Rock Safe Streets has responded once again. On Wednesday, July 15, the anti-gun violence organization called the community together for a march calling for peace in response to recent shootings in the community and across the city. According to citywide data from the NYPD, shooting incidents have increased by 130 percent in June alone. Rock Safe Streets, part of Sheltering Arms, is a program designed to “cure violence through prevention, treatment for trauma, advocacy, education, and pathways to stronger, safer communities for all. Every time there is a shooting, the group takes their voices to the street to try to curb the violence in the community. About 50 people showed up for the event on Beach 41st Street, with all wearing masks

due to coronavirus. In the wake of recent Black Lives Matter protests, some people also wore shirts saying All Black Lives Matter. Rosalyn Mason of Rock Safe Streets started off the march with a very passionate speech on the recent shootings in the Rockaways. Her speech started, off with “they are watching us! We are looking like savages to those watching us. Mason expressed her frustration about having to take to the streets once again in response

to recent shootings in the community and city, including the shootings of children. Mason spoke of a recent conversation with her daughter, in which her daughter said, “One thing does not have to do with another.

Mason begged to differ saying, “Yes it does! Mason spoke out against people within the community going against each other and called for respect, standing tall and giving one another the power to move forward. Many showed up from different organizations including Rockaway Youth Task Force, Fathers In The Hood, the principal from Humanities IV, Councilman Donavan Richards, Bronx Connect, the NYPD and others. As they marched, participants chanted things like “Don’t shoot, live! Everyone walked to Beach 54th Street, an area where gun violence has been prevalent. There, speeches continued. A representative from Fathers In the Hood spoke passionately, calling for people to make change in their community. The march ended with a prayer. The message was simple: to see change, you must be the change. It starts with me and you. Love is an action word.

Matt Kiss’ ‘Reacquainted’ to Drop Friday By Katie McFadden

It’s time to get ‘reacquainted’ with Matt Kiss. After a long time in the making, local singer-songwriter Matt Kiss is ready to debut his latest EP, “Reacquainted.” On Friday, July 24, Kiss will drop his newest five-song EP, giving music-lovers an overall look at the new direction Kiss has taken with his music. In 2012, Kiss debuted his first-ever EP, “Black Hound Sessions,” with an Americana/county vibe. Since then, he was working on another project around 2016, but not being satisfied with the outcome, he decided to shelve the project, reassess, reevaluate and go back to the drawing board as he discovered his true voice and the direction he wanted to take his music in that would be truly representative of him. The result is “Reacquainted,” a smooth EP that is a vibe in itself, with a pop singer-song-

writer feel, influenced with soul, R&B and a little bit of rock. Within the five songs, Kiss provides a little something for everyone as he pours his heart and soul into topics of heartbreak, to falling in love and dealing with things like anxiety. Over the past few months, fans have gotten sneak peaks of the EP with songs like “Hurricane” and “Somebody Else’s Problem,” but they’ll get to hear three new jams, including Kiss’ personal favorite, the title track of the record, “Reacquainted.” Kiss says, “It’s a love song and I wrote it during a personal time while I was falling in love with my wife and when I realized I was in trouble. It’s really soulful and funky and while the entire EP is representative of me, that one is my favorite,” Kiss said. “Reacquainted,” is a collaborative effort. Kiss worked with Malcolm Fong, who helped him produce and record the

album at Fong Studios in Brooklyn. He also worked with pianist and keyboard player, Amos Ang on one track, “Quiet,” and Matt Lesman helped with the artwork and photography for the EP. Kiss is excited for people to finally tune in to what he’s been working on. “It means a lot to me to finally release this. This is me creating music that really speaks to me and is as true to myself as I can be. I’m getting reacquainted with my audience and this is the start of something that will be a forward projection for me,” Kiss said.

“Reacquainted,” will be available on all digital music platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Tidal, Amazon, for streaming or download on Friday. To keep up with Kiss, be sure to follow Matt Kiss on Facebook or MattKissMusic on Instagram.

The Lazer Speaks: Been There, Dunne That

By Lou Pastina

Real Rockaway residents will remember the long-time Wave columnist Dorothy Dunne. Dorothy’s column centered around events in Rockaway and Breezy Point, mostly parties of friends and family that she would drop in at and then report on. I think it was special for those folks to see their names in print. You knew you had arrived if you made a Dorothy column. I didn’t know her or her friends, but it was always a guilty pleasure to read her

column and feel like you were a guest at the party. Well, in that vein, I offer the following observations from recent events. I was on the beach this past weekend where Donna Sue was celebrating her birthday and her husband Patrick brought her a beautiful balloon! Some old friends were there, people she knew from grammar school and high school. While there was some grumbling about “mask conspiracies,” everyone kept their social distance, even while they were having a few sociables. It was a time to catch up with the talented photographer from the North Fork who shuttles her time between Rockaway and Greenport and whose photos adorn the Northwell Health offices here in Rockaway. Her photos of owls and birds from out

East are simply outstanding. There was also an opportunity to catch up with the contingent from Peach Lake, making the long trip for their dear friend. And I didn’t know the gang from Garden City had an injured player on their roster, as the patriarch had a quad operation that has sidelined his chair- throwing days. Also, in attendance was the effervescent Bugsy, master of all. He previewed his upcoming history classes that he offered through Facebook one, long, lonely night much to his own regret. Actually, the classes sound very interesting, and Mr. Goldberg gets high marks for his civic-mindedness and charitable use of his time, which is always at a premium. How he manages to do all that he does is beyond me. I get tired just thinking about it. His

wonderful wife is a saint! The get-together was made possible through the hard work and love of a retired Battalion Chief and his lovely wife, close friends of the birthday girl. After setting up a tent, bringing chairs, coolers and food down, I offered my help, but apparently everything was already done. Who knew? I also found out that a friend who I thought was still on the police force, had retired almost eight years ago and is working on Long Island heading a security group for a hospital. I missed that completely over the last eight years! If Dorothy was still reporting, these would be the kind of things I would pick up on. Which reminds me. A walk to the beach these days reveals that there are so many people I don’t know anymore. I mean I know it’s

90 degrees and people are coming from all over to go to the beach, but boy do I feel like my beloved father-in-law when he would say “who are these people?” But it’s all good, as we are deep into summer, and friends and family gather, even during the pandemic, albeit safely. Because even when the Grinch stole Christmas, the good people of Whoville still celebrated, I can hear them singing now! So, enjoy summer, smile, laugh, but don’t hug and for God’s sake don’t kiss. And by the way stay out of the water as I hear there are Great White sharks out there, but I’ll save that for another time! Rockway Beach: where dreams come true!! (Editor's note: Lazer asked his logo be replaced with this recent photo of himself).

***** Shannon Reed, who taught English at Stella Maris High School, has written a book, Why Did I Get A B?, and a recent excerpt was printed on The Daily Beast website. She lists A through Z reasons why she loved her experience at the school so much. You can buy the book on Amazon or you can subscribe to The Daily Beast for a short term subscription (for just a buck) to see the excerpt. Whether you went to Stella, sent your kids there or just remember the school that closed in 2010, you’ll enjoy Reed’s recount. Although now she’s writing and living in Pittsburgh, Reed says she still feels like a Stella girl. ***** Almost normal and better late than never. The Summer Classic, the annual basketball

league held at St. Francis de Sales, got underway on Monday with boys and girls high school action. It was great to see the schoolyard come alive. The hoops hadn’t been used for months during the lockdown, probably the longest stretch of nonuse since the Father Grogan Memorial Schoolyard was dedicated many decades ago. ***** So many friends, so little time. Rockaway Beach is quite the magnet for friend groups on Facebook. Friends of Rockaway Beach, as far as we can tell, is the original group and has some 30,000 members and was started way back in 2011. (Someone will tell us we’re wrong, even if they’re wrong). And then came The Better Friends of Rockaway Beach in 2017. And then came Best Friends of Rockaway Beach in 2018. The newest group we’ve found is the Real Friends of Rockaway Beach created just last month. ***** Well, unless some fluke happens, City Councilman Donovan Richards will be the next

Queens Borough President. Elizabeth Crowley conceded on Tuesday, before the Board of Elections even officially called the race. Congratulations to both candidates for running great campaigns during these most challenging times. With Democrats outnumbering Republicans in Queens by an overwhelming number, Richards seems a shoo-in. It’s not just the numbers: The Queens County GOP website still has 2019 info. ***** History in the baking. Keith Bugsy Goldberg and some students didn’t let the oppressive heat get in the way of history lessons and discussion. Each morning at 8 a.m. in the St. Francis schoolyard, Bugsy has been conducting a history class for students in grades 5 through 8. ***** Another kind of history is being covered by Ryan Woerner and Coach Charlie Marquardt. These two host a weekly Sunday night hoops chat covering Rockaway basketball, past and present, and it’s for all ages. If

you’re hoop head, you gotta check it out on Facebook. Just search Rockaway Hoops and you’ll find the channel. ***** The State’s Liquor Authority issued new guidelines for bar/ restaurants. Bars are not allowed to sell chips and call it food. In order to sell drinks, bars must offer sandwiches or soups or other items of “substance. Bar/restaurants face crackdowns on social distancing and mask requirements and even the most conscientious places have a very tough time. Not all patrons are as conscientious. And then there are the watchdogs who have 311 on speed dial. One person complained about a local place saying they were “uncomfortable with the lack of masks by staff on both Saturday and Sunday last week. The place can refute this because it has video of staff wearing mask. But we gotta ask, why go back on Sunday if you were uncomfortable on Saturday? We wonder if big box stores get the same kind of complaints.

Schooling In The Schoolyard HISTORY IN THE MAKING By Marina Cregan

While many locals think the talk of the town, on Monday, July 20, was the start of the Summer Classics Basketball season, the real surprise event began at 8 a.m. that same day. Same location, St. Francis de Sales (SFDS) schoolyard, same local hero– Keith “Bugsy” Goldberg in charge, and the lucky participants, were again Rockaway’s youth. But there wasn’t a ball in sight. In an effort to help educate young people, Goldberg volunteered to present ten days of history lectures and discussions in an attempt to help the next generation have a better understanding of what is currently happening throughout the United States. Goldberg says he was inspired to launch this endeavor, “so that our next generation can have a clearer understanding of how we got to where we are today, why a society forms a government and the institutions that come along with it, and why the United States has created the best government and society, to the benefit of more of its people, than any other.” The lectures began this week, and will continue Monday through Friday, until July 31. These history discussions are targeted for SFDS parishioners in grades 5-8. Each lecture begins at 8 a.m. and lasts approximately 30 minutes. Goldberg, of course, is following COVID-19 guidelines, by requiring anyone who attends to bring a mask, while listening in open outdoor space of the schoolyard. SFDS Pastor, Rev. William Sweeney, has been in attendance each day, and is, as always, supporting the neighborhood’s young people. Goldberg has outlined ten history topics that he plans on teaching to the children. The topics are taught in chronological order, beginning with Pre-Columbian World History. Additional topics that Goldberg will discuss are Age of Exploration and Colonial Period, American Revolution and the Found-

ing Documents, Westward Expansion up to the Civil War, The Civil War and Reconstruction, Industrial Revolution up to World War I (WWI), WWI and the Interwar Period, World War II, The Cold War, and concluding with Post Cold War to the Present. In his Facebook post outlining his intentions to start these ten days of lectures and discussions, Goldberg stated, “I am not a teacher by profession, but I was a History Major and received the History Department Award upon graduation from Queens College, where my mentor was the former Ambassador to the United Nations from Greece.” Although Goldberg is not a certified teacher, he explained that, “hopefully this will be an experiment that can be repeated and replicated by others.” One St. Francis de Sales Catholic Academy (SFDSCA) teacher is encouraging all her middle school students to attend. She mentions the important quote of George Santana, when discussing Goldberg’s venture, “Those who do not remember the mistakes of the past are condemned to repeat them.” She, like many of the parents whose

children are attending, feel it is so important that the students study World and American History, so as to try to comprehend the complex social issues that children are facing today. Kristen O’Grady Franchock, parent of two SFDSCA incoming seventh graders who attended the lectures, said the following when discussing why she encouraged her children to attend: “Keith ‘Bugsy’ Goldberg, Colgate graduate, is a great local resource to educate our children on American History, Economics, and Civics. Bugsy has always set a great example of community service for our parish and always has our kids’ best interest in mind.” During day one’s lesson, Goldberg addressed a common misconception among Americans today. That is the difference between a democracy and a republic. Goldberg cleared this up simply for the young students. SFDSCA incoming sixth grader, Madeline Youngberg, said, “I learned that when Rome was all together in one piece, other religions started to try and take over, and then Rome had to split into East Rome and West Rome.” The differences between the Ancient

Roman republic and Ancient Greek democracy needed clarification, and this understanding will enable young people to fully comprehend our freedom of speech and other civil liberties that are often taken for granted. The record breaking heat and the early hour did not deter Goldberg’s enthusiasm when addressing issues of importance like religion, slavery, and controversial and famous figures in history. The connection between events in the past and today’s challenges were clear. Correlations were drawn by Goldberg and by the students between Columbus’ journey to the New World, and the exposure it caused the Native Americans to experience (new immunities, diseases, etc.) and today’s global pandemic. These challenges weigh heavily on the minds of today’s young people, and the through Goldberg’s classes and continuous conversation, youth are gaining a better understanding of the pandemic. Rockaway’s youth are being inundated with conflicting information about the importance of a mask, how germs spread, and how to remain safe. The historical connection and the contemporary reference help enable the students to grasp these concepts better, and hopefully it will enable them to make appropriate choices for their own health and safety. As we go press, there have been three days of lectures taught by Goldberg so far. Goldberg has received an overwhelming amount of support from Rockaway parents who have encouraged their children to attend. SFDSCA parent of two incoming seventh graders, Betsy Kuhlmann, said, “Thank you, Bugsy, for always putting our community first, and showing our children what it means to be a true citizen. It is so wonderful for our children to be able to listen and learn history from one of the best local historians.” And when the history of Rockaway is written and spoken of, the contributions of one Bugsy Goldberg will surely be included.

From TV Stars to Local Heroes, Buck the System’s Got it All By Katie McFadden

The buck stops with Buck the System. A new podcast is making waves as locals, Buck Grottano and Brian Fox, aim to entertain listeners with interviews with everyone from hip hop legends to American heroes, television celebrities and even some of Rockaway’s own local celebrities and heroes. As they got ready for their Tuesday night show with upand-coming actor Lorenzo Antonucci, who’s set to appear in a controversial Netflix show called “Cracka” this fall, Grottano and Fox took some time to be the source of an interview with The Rockaway Times, to speak more about Buck the System. Buck Grottano has had plenty of experience with podcasts, starting back in 2009 with the world of horse racing. He interviewed everyone from jockeys to trainers to the guys who cleaned up the stables, until around 2015, but even the exciting world of horse racing began to become redundant. “I got bored of it. I needed to expand it to something else,” he said. After taking a break from podcasting, Grottano found the coronavirus pandemic, when everyone was cooped up at home, to be the perfect time to give people something new to listen to. Buck the System, a podcast airing two nights a week, mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays, on Facebook Live, has no set theme other than friendly conversation. “It’s an interview show, where we get to know each guest and have a conversation. Every guest is different, and you get to learn something new from each of them,” Grottano said. There are mainly two rules—no politics or religion, and the show mostly remains PG-rated. Grottano started out solo, interviewing a local treasure—Bridget O’Connor, who has faced the overwhelming obstacle of life as a new amputee after a tragic incident last year. “That’s been my favorite interview of all time. She’s the reason why I was motivated to

start the podcast during the pandemic. I ran into her at Chase bank and saw her walking around and it inspired me. She’s a friend and to see her out there walking around after what she had gone through, it was just amazing. I invited her on the show in March, and it was the start of where we are,” Grottano said. Among other local guests have been professional wrestler Eric Jayden, local rapper Bobby J, muay thai master Chris Romulo of CROM, singer Chris Long, Tom Murphy of Curran’s and others. Grottano even interviewed Captain TJ Ott, a native of Broad Channel who has become a star of the hit National Geographic show “Wicked Tuna.” This led to interviews with several other stars of the show and others in the fishing world, which led to a big following of the Buck the System podcast from fishing fans. “Over the past two months, we’ve had around 200K views to our page by hanging out with people like TJ Ott and Tyler and Marissa McLaughlin from Wicked Tuna Outer Banks,” Grottano said. And Buck the System keeps growing. Last month, Grottano invited longtime friend Brian

Fox to be a fresh voice, serving as a co-host for the show. The two have known each other since meeting at the now longgone Rockaway movie theater as kids and have gone through junior high, and high school together, and even played together in the Rockie’s roller hockey league. Now they’re teamed up for Buck the System. Fox, who is new to podcasting, says he’s always been a supporter of Grottano’s podcasts, since the horseracing days, and he wanted to try it out for himself. Having worked in the film industry with director Kevin Breslin, Fox brings some fresh connections to the entertainment industry, and actively utilizes social media to reach out to more potential guests for the podcast. With an interest in the paranormal, Fox was recently able to hook Patti Negri, a psychic medium known as the “Good Witch” who appears on “Ghost Adventures,” for an interview. “She was very nice and positive and explained everything that she does. We had a really good interview,” Fox said. Earlier this month, the guys also interviewed Keisuke Hoashi, who voices the character of Shinji Kojima on animated hit TV show “Bob’s Burgers.” And

last week, they spoke with professional golfer and author, J.C. Carbonell. With listeners increasing, Buck the System has even gained a few sponsors including Bungalow Bar, Big Apple Elevators and Fat Tuna, to help show support. The companies are mentioned in intros and breaks for the show. As they grow and expand, Grottano and Fox are now in the process of setting up a new studio for the podcast within Fox’s home. The hosts hope to be able to have guests in the studio when coronavirus becomes less of a risk, rather than their current method of video chatting with guests through Skype. “It’s better to have a face to face than Skype. When you’re face to face, it gets real, it gets personal,” Grottano explained. Having guests in studio will also decrease the chance of technical glitches that the hosts have experienced while trying to connect with guests. Grottano and Fox have big dreams for where they want to take Buck the System. “Right now, we’re just working on the baby steps, but we have big goals. All it takes is that one unbelievable interview with that one person, and it can take off and go viral and next thing you know, you have a show,” Fox said. “I’d like to get to a point where people are asking us to come on. If you get to that level, you’ve made it. It would be nice to make a living with this. But right now, we’re just having fun with the show and hopefully people like it,” Grottano said. Grottano and Fox hope more people tune in to find out what Buck the System is all about. “It’s not about us. It’s about the guests. It’s slight comic relief and we want open-minded people to check it out and tune in,” Grottano said. You can catch Buck the System podcasts on www.facebook.com/ BucktheSystemLive/ If anyone would like to be a guest on the show, send a message through the Buck the System Facebook page, or email buckthesystempodcast@gmail. com.

St. John’s Boys Experience Kayaking as Part of a ‘Wild Year’ By Katie McFadden

On Tuesday, July 21, a group of boys got to experience kayaking for the first time ever. Through Wild Year, a program that encourages stewardship, education and recreation in area parks, some residents of the St. John’s Residence for Boys are getting to explore local recreation areas in positive, productive and fun ways. With a collaboration with the Community Boathouse, the boys spent some time helping improve the kayak launch, followed by a first-time paddle along Jamaica Bay. On Tuesday, two groups of boys from the St. John’s Residence in Rockaway and another based in Bayside, met in the morning and afternoon at Bay Breeze Park for a day of lending a helping hand, learning, and having some fun on the water. The boys were given a task—help redo the site’s ramp to make it

safer and more accessible for everyone. The ramp to access the bay had consisted of wood and large stones to hold it in place. To improve it, about 150 bags of gravel were delivered to the site from Breezy Point Lumber. Along with volunteers from the Boathouse and St. John’s staff, the boys helped clean out garbage around the area, smooth out the site and poured the gravel along the ramp so a smooth blue mat could line the path to the water, creating an easier,

safer and wider access point for the kayakers. After an hour of hard work, the boys got to play. Volunteers from the Boathouse educated the boys on the best kayaking practices and what to do once on the water. Then they took to the bay and became acquainted with kayaking. “It was very satisfying to see people experiencing something like that for the first time and it was an opportunity that they don’t get often. The whole purpose is to show them other op-

tions and get them to see the brighter side of life, while helping the community in the process,” Rick Horan, who heads the Community Boathouse said. “The Community Boathouse was very happy to be asked to be a part of this. We had a full contingent of volunteers that showed up to help with whatever was needed, especially on the water.” The experience was part of a larger program that aims to give youth like those at St. John’s, a year of adventure in urban parks. Wild Year, sparked by an idea during a community advisory meeting with the St. John’s Residence in 2019, was made possible through the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) and funding from the Achelis & Bodman Foundation. The program, managed by Elizabeth Stoehr, takes the boys Continued on page 15

ST. JOHN’S BOYS Continued from Page 14 to different park areas where they participate in stewardship by helping with a community service task, education by learning more about wildlife, park areas and even career opportunities, and recreation by getting to enjoy a fun activity in the park. The program is designed as a milestone program with goals, which will culminate in a graduation in December, and the possibility of receiving incentives such as cash rewards or gift cards for good performance. “We not only want to provide them with the experience, but we want to help them build skills and introduce them to career possibilities and reinforce them positively, so that they know when they do good work like this, they can be rewarded for it,” Alex Zablocki of JBRPC said. This pilot program was set to begin in April but was delayed due to coronavirus. However, the program officially launched last month with a virtual orientation, followed by a trip to the American Ball Park and Sunset

THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2020 Cove in Broad Channel. About 12 boys participated in a cleanup along the shoreline of the ballfield. For the educational portion, they learned about horseshoe crabs, local birds and the harmful effects of marine debris on the environment. For recreation, the boys then went on a walking tour of neighboring Sunset Cove, where they learned about the restoration work that took place in the area to make the park possible. Tuesday’s kayaking day came as a special request by the boys. “After polling the young men, who are between 14 to 18, they all said that they wanted to go kayaking. None of them had ever been kayaking before,” Zablocki said. As an activity that could be done with social distancing in mind, it was the perfect choice for the next program. Ideas for the next project are still in the works, but Zablocki says there are many possibilities. JBRPC recently joined the Billion Oyster Project (BOP) and NY State Parks to install Queens’ first BOP Community Oyster Reef in Bayswater Point

State Park. Through Wild Year, the boys may participate in a program to monitor the reef, so they can learn about oysters, followed by fishing in the bay. Some other ideas are hiking around and learning the military history of Fort Tilden, or bike riding around Shirley Chisholm State Park in Brooklyn. “We want to give these boys varying experiences. The world

Page 15

is our oyster and there are so many varying places to go around Jamaica Bay and Rockaway,” Zablocki said. “You can go surfing, kayaking, hike a military installation, survey an osprey platform. You can’t do this anywhere else in New York City. This potential has never been unlocked for them and we truly want to them to experience a ‘wild year.”

Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has been busy delivering masks and hand sanitizer to synagogues throughout her district. Since the start of the pandemic, Pheffer Amato has delivered masks and hand sanitizer to dozens of religious institutions as congregations are able to increase their capacity indoors. “As we continue to move through our phased reopening, temples all over my district are eagerly welcoming

back their congregants – a great sign of a return to normalcy,” Pheffer Amato said. “I love personally dropping off the supplies and catching up with the community. Every little bit helps, and I’m happy to do my part to help my community return from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic safely.” Pheffer Amato will be dropping off more masks and hand sanitizer refills in the coming weeks. To request masks and hand sanitizer refills for your house of worship, please contact Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato’s office by phone at 718-945-9550, or by email at amatos@nyassembly.gov.

ULRICH SPEARHEADS CLEANUP EFFORT Councilman Eric Ulrich recently spearheaded a clean-up effort in Howard Beach and Broad Channel. Through Wildcat Service Corporation, the initiative, which wrapped up last week, targeted trash-ridden areas along, underneath and adjacent to the Joseph P. Addabbo Memorial Bridge. "Our office has received several complaints about trash and debris along and adjacent to the Addabbo Bridge. I am pleased to share that we have enlisted the help of the Wildcat Service Corporation for a much-needed clean-up effort of the area. The Addabbo Bridge serves as the gateway to both Howard Beach and Broad Channel, so it is important this area remains clean," Ulrich said. "The debris along the Addabbo Bridge walkway, as well as in the area underneath the Bridge, has been the largest single source point for pollution entering Jamaica Bay,"

Broad Channel Civic Association President Dan Mundy said. "Once in the Bay, this trash would have a very harmful effect on the animals and marine life, in addition this area had become so overcome with debris that pedestrians and bicyclists could barely navigate past it. A big thank you to the Wildcat team and their workers who did an outstanding job; and to Councilman Ulrich for his efforts to bring this great organization in to clean-up this area."

Far Rock Greek Council Keeps the Community Clean The Far Rock Greek Council is making sure their community stays clean by putting in the hard work even on hot summer days. On Saturday, July 18, the Far Rock Greek Council (formerly the Far Rockaway National Pan-Hellenic Council) came together on Mott Avenue for their annual community clean up. This year, the organization teamed up with Influence Activewear and had a great turnout for the effort. They started at the Mott Avenue train station and continued under the Rockaway Freeway, covering a large area where trash is regularly left behind or dumped. They continued all the way to Beach 25th Street. With cleaning tools in hand and a lot of help, they removed everything

from small trash to even an abandoned mattress. At the end of the clean up, the Far Rock Greek Council provided snacks and refreshments for all of the volunteers to make sure they stayed hydrated and nourished. “We want to thank all of our Greeks who came out, our community and especially our youth who came out to put in work because this is what community looks like,” Curtis Turney-Rentas, founder of the Far Rock Greek Council said. “We want to especially thank Randy from Influence Activewear who supplied most of the supplied to help make this clean up move flawlessly. Rockaway Summer Memories 1940s By Jean Caligiuri McKenna

The lazy days of summer have a way of igniting many vivid memories from years past, when I was a young girl growing up on Beach 84th Street, and Rockaway Beach was an unparalleled summertime mecca all its own… In the 1940s, when Rockaway was a peninsula of Dutchstyle front porch homes and bungalow rows, the summer season provided an annual rhythm of transformation, where the quiet town became a lively and spirited summertime nirvana. Each year come late June, our tight-knit community of varied colors, faiths and ethnicities, were joined by a mighty influx of visitants seeking seaside asylum from the asphalt baked sidewalks, tar roof and fire escape tenements of Flatbush, Canarsie, Italian Harlem, and the South Bronx. From the city buses, the railroad el and over the then-new automobile bridges, they came in endless droves, welcomed by the sunny wide-open pasturage of ocean breezes and invigorating salt air. Downfor-the-day visitors eagerly jumbled about with transient residents as the rows of empty bungalows became re-awakened with life and many a private house became room and board rentals for weekly and seasonal dwellers. These makeshift melting-pot communities were the heart of the season as they reunited familiar faces, renewed old friendships (and romances), and brought along new summer friends and neighbors. In our home, Papa rented our three-story house each summer to our Orthodox Jewish guests from Brooklyn. Each June at the end of the school year, Mama, Papa, and myself would dutifully move all of our belongings to the muggy basement and hot third floor (summer seemed more stifling then), where we would live as our seasonal guests resided in our first and second floors for July and August. For the tenants, Papa would

supply (for a quarter), lockers and showers in the backyard for their busy back and forth beachgoing activities, some three minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean. Oddly enough, above this stirring hoopla recollection, the most vivid memories I have of those long summer days are of being by myself, alone and always in search of little adventures of my own. A typical 1945 summer day would find me on a hot July morning ambling a few houses down the block to play out front with some of the other kids across the street from the St. Rose church and Temple Israel. For a brief hour or two, we’d play an unfinished half-hearted game of Monopoly or checkers under the prenoon broiling sun, until one by one we each went our own way. In the early afternoon with seemingly no one around on the block, I would “borrow” change from under an upside-down teacup (without Mama knowing), and head towards the old boardwalk looking for any familiar faces. The magnificent beachfront was a vast colorful stretch of white sand, an endless technicolor of vibrant umbrellas, and mammoth crowds of jolly strangers packing the sand from the shore all the way to the board steps. The sights and sounds felt very distant to me, from the crashing waves and lifeguard whistles to the Good Humor ice cream vendors and unfamiliar children building sandcastles close by their family’s blankets. I remember feeling so small, almost lost, searching in vain for school chums whom I rarely saw during the summer months. Disappointed and forlorn, but determined to make something of the day, I would meander up along the boardwalk, strolling past the liveliness of the sun-drenched setting. Walking the stretch of the real, sometime splintery boards required passing the concessions stands, wading through the long lines of barefoot beachgoers coming and going with trays of hot dogs,

sodas, and cigarettes. Along the route were bronzed pretty girls in one-piece polka dot swimsuits, men in their Panama hats and white suit pants, Pepsi-Cola signs, and transistor radios blaring the sound of baseball games or the popular Andrew Sisters song “Rum and Coca Cola.” After about 15 blocks, I stopped at Beach 98th Street, where I decided that I would spend the afternoon at Playland. Standing across the street from the boardwalk on the edge of the New Road (Shore Front Pkwy), Rockaway’s Playland seemed as big an attraction as Coney Island with its goliath-like roller coaster adorning the shore skyline, proudly displaying the bold letters PLAYLAND. With my pocket of change, I would buy my own private amusement utopia for the afternoon with no one to bother me. Welcomed by two giant clown faces, I was immediately ushered into the dizzying timeless sounds of summertime all at once in ten directions, with loud bells, whistles, roaring rollercoaster clatter, Kiddie Park screeches of children’s laughter doused in looping carousel music, popping balloons and the aroma of caramel popcorn. Roaming the park, I would aimlessly shuffle and bump about for a while, taking in all the wonderous clamor of the “Sideshow Gallery” barkers, trapeze artists and “Loop de Loop” shrieks overhead. Joining in with my own fun, I treated myself to vanilla custard while braving rides with

names like “The Rocket” and the “Funhouse Magic Carpet.” To escape from the pounding of the hot July sun, swelter and incessant carnival barking, I would eventually seek refuge in the penny arcade, partaking in the shaded leisures of Skee-ball, Pinball, and Madame Zelda the fortune teller. After several hearty hours, I was exhausted and ready to surrender, but also satisfied that I had made the most of my day. Under the late afternoon hazy sun, I sauntered back to the safety of my home and Mama’s cooking, content handing off the day to the dusk. Rockaway at night in the summer was a town lit up with vibrancy, when the endless pubs of Irish Town up to Beach 103rd Street came alive with merriment. All summer long, single guys, gals and groups of pals, hoisting cheers and singalongs to the hit-parade & Irish bands, emanated sounds of laughter and youthful gaiety as the PLAYLAND sign lit up the night sky, occasionally beneath bursting fireworks. On these summer nights, I remember lying in bed able to hear in the distance the excited screams from the roller coaster, while also listening to soft friendly chatter on the front porches below from the bungalow tenants in their rocking chairs as the night crickets chirped away. These soothing “sounds of life” are indelible in my memory as they formed an idyllic haven of bonding that I felt was unique only to my home of Rockaway. And whenever I “hear” those sounds, they give me great comfort today, as they did then as an 11 year old girl, when I would silently say my prayers, treasuring my little summer heaven and drift off to sleep to the ocean surf patter, another lazy halcyon endless summer day on the horizon.

Down Syndrome

Down syndrome, also called Down’s syndrome (DS), is the most common chromosomal condition associated with intellectual disability and is characterized by a variety of additional clinical findings. It occurs in approximately one in 8,000 births worldwide. In the U.S., DS accounts for about 500 live births annually, and more than 200,000 persons are living with the disorder. The original description of the syndrome, in 1866, has been attributed to John Langton Down, a physician from Cornwall, England. It wasn’t until more than 90 years later that the chromosomal cause was found, and

the condition was called Down syndrome. There are wide differences in intellectual disability and social function in those with DS, and often the degree of social dysfunction is linked to the degree of intellectual disability. A third copy of chromosome 21 (normally chromosomes occur in pairs), called trisomy 21, has long been recognized as the cause of DS. Chromosome 21 has 200 to 300 genes on it, and factors affecting these genes account for the clinical features of DS. The actual cause of the genetic mutation remains largely unknown. Until recently, to diagnose DS in the fetus

required invasive and potentially dangerous procedures like amniocentesis (using a syringe to puncture the abdominal wall and withdraw amniotic fluid). Fetal testing would be recommended based upon the appearance of the fetus on sonogram. Today, non-invasive screening and testing of the mother’s blood for a type of DNA from the fetus can detect DS, and this test is 99.7% accurate for the diagnosis of fetal DS. Remember, a mother and her unborn baby share a common blood circulation. The physical appearance of a person, or even a fetus, with DS is singular. There are upslanted palpebral fissures (the crease above the eyelid), flattened bridge of the nose, nuchal folds (mounds and creases in the skin behind the neck), a single flexion crease on the palm, clinodactyly of the fifth finger (the finger curves toward the fourth finger), and hypotonia in an infant (abnormally low muscle tone). DS is associated with multiple medical conditions. Among these conditions

The Rockaway Times are congenital heart disease, and improvements in managing this have led to an increase in life expectancy, from 30 years in 1973 to 60 years in 2002. Autoimmune conditions are common and include Hashimoto’s disease (thyroid disorder), type 1 diabetes, alopecia (hair loss), celiac disease, juvenile arthritis, and vitiligo (whitening of the skin in darker-skinned individuals). In addition, impairment of the immune system can occur and is why many people with DS die from infections such as pneumonia. Persons with DS and their families generally have a positive attitude and express a desire for a high quality of life that builds on the strengths and skills of the affected child or adult. Early intervention with tutoring, therapy, and strong family interaction has led to many with DS leading near-normal lives and becoming contributing members of human society. A Kind Face One of my favorite poems by St. Francis of Assisi is “A Kind Face.” It has been a powerful and uplifting source of encouragement in these times of unrest. We never know the struggles of another person, so being kind and compassionate is a gift to others. I beg you all to be kind to one another. Words can be used in a positive, encouraging way or they could cut through like a sword. One kind word, one kind face, one kind act could make all the difference

in one’s life. A Kind Face by St. Francis of Assisi Joy is the greatest cleanser, and it is the greatest testimony to our faith. “Toil with happiness,” my Lord once said to me. God sent a servant on an errand through a dangerous part of the world. The servant, having received in hand what God wanted delivered, turned to the Holy and said, “My Beloved Master, do you have a final instruction?” and God replied, “A kind face is a

precious gift.” Most people wearing masks to cover their mouths no longer seem to smile. Typically, you can tell if the person is smiling through their eyes. Personally, I like wearing the mask to cover my facial flaws! But I love to smile, hence the permanent wrinkles around by mouth and eyes. A kind face brings such joy and pleasure to all those we meet on our path. The unfriendly face or eyes convey coldness and heartless attitude. I believe a positive mindset can help change the world into a beautiful place to live. My late mother in law, Catherine Kilgallen always said to me, it doesn’t cost anything to be nice! She tried to inspire us all to be kind people. Her smile was contagious and heartwarming. She was friendly and such a pleasure to be around. Never heard her complain and, trust me, there were plenty of things she could have lamented about. It was not in

Page 25 her nature to whine or complain. My only regret is that I did not have her in my life for long; she would have been a wonderful mother-in-law. I am grateful to have met her gentle soul. There are many kind people in the world. In fact, there are more good than bad. As I write this column it is Paulette’s birthday, my business partner and dearest friend. She is the definition of kind. Her heart is wide open to all beings and she always tries to find the best in everyone she meets. She is a giver and an empath. She oversees and cares for her dear mom and never grumbles about the huge responsibility. She simply does what she has to in a very kind, selfless, compassionate way. Thank you for being kind. You are making our world a better place to live in with your humanity. May we all learn to be kind, smile and truly serve without expecting something in return. In giving we receive.

By Beth Hanning As my loyal readers know, I love to do etiquette columns. I annually write my beach etiquette column (which next year may have to be three week’s worth of columns as people are getting out of control!) Now I have realized, I must write a boardwalk etiquette column. I noticed this as early as the spring but now with what I see as a huge increase in visitors, it is a huge issue. 1. Please realize people are biking and jogging while on the boardwalk, so be aware of your surroundings. Do not just step off of the beach and continue walking south to north or vice versa. Look both ways as if you were crossing the street. Be sure to hold small children’s hands and make sure they do not run out in front of

Page 27

Boardwalk Etiquette someone. The biker and the child could be seriously hurt. The Rockaway boardwalk is a busy thoroughfare in the summer as people use it as a way to get around the neighborhood. So be careful! I think more people are biking since there is construction everywhere! 2. Cyclists, please be aware it is not the Tour de France. We do not want to see how high of a speed you can achieve while riding on the boards. Also, boardwalk users, there is no bike lane for a few blocks, so be aware of that as well. 3. People, please do not walk in the bike lane. I am not speeding on my bike but it is easier if I can stay in the bike lane rather than going around. 4. Please do not begin a football game while on the boardwalk! (Recently, a friend I met from Queens through WISH commented on my column that I must be exaggerating.) I am not. I saw two young men playing a game of football on the boardwalk, steps away

LASZLO KOVACS ALL TYPES OF DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS SERVICES

from the beach. Go onto the beach. 5. Wear clothes. Or at least a bathing suit with enough material. I do not want to see your cheeks: male or female (yes I saw a man’s butt cheeks last week while biking.) 6. Do not just stop walking while on the boardwalk to take a selfie or to check your

phone. Move to the side so as not to have someone bump right into you. Thank you all so much for your kind emails and suggestions for beach etiquette columns. I really appreciate it! Any boardwalk pet peeves of yours? Let me know! MrsHanning308@gmail.com. Have a good week!

Chicken with Prosciutto and Spinach By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 8 Ingredients: 8 (6 ounce) chicken cutlets 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper 16 large sage leaves (if you don’t have sage leaves, use ground sage) Handful fresh baby spinach leaves 16 thin sliced prosciutto 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 cup dry white wine 1 cup low sodium chicken broth ½ stick butter Directions: Flatten cutlets to ½” thickness. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Put 2

large (or 5 small) sage leaves on top of each cutlet then wrap 2 slices of prosciutto crosswise around each cutlet, holding sage in place. If you don’t have sage leaves, sprinkle ground sage instead. Heat 1-1/2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add four cutlets and cook until no longer pink in the center and the juice runs clear, approximately 2-3 minutes per side. Put some baby spinach on top and let it wilt a little. Transfer to a platter and tent with foil. Repeat with remaining cutlets and another 1-1/2 tablespoons of oil. Add wine to skillet and simmer, scraping brown bits from pan. Add the broth and simmer until slightly reduced. Remove from heat and add the butter. Swirl the skillet until the butter has melted and sauce is creamy in texture. Spoon 2 tablespoons of sauce over each cutlet.

SUMMER CLASSIC LIMITED EDITION By Keith Goldberg

The 36th St. Francis Summer Classic began on Monday night, July 20, with games in the Boys and Girls High School divisions. The Men's and Women's Open leagues began the following night. The return to play was enthusiastically received by all, after more than four months without youth and adult basketball. The Summer Classic developed special protocols to address the complications of playing sports presented by the COVID crisis. These protocols and plans were reviewed by the Pastor, the Bishop, the Diocesan Office of Risk Man-

agement, and the Coordinator of the Diocesan COVID Response Team, and former NYPD Chief of Department and Director of the Office of Emergency Management, Joseph Esposito. Among those protocols is a restriction on spectators within the schoolyard in order to maintain a controlled environment there. Important update: To prevent an environment that might spread COVID spectators outside the fence must wear masks. This is mandatory. Please don't put the games at risk of being suspended. The first two weeks of play will be limited to these older divisions. Grammar School

divisions begin play July 31, and August 3. Due to the necessity to keep to smaller team sizes, it was not possible to accept all applications but we did our best to accept as many as we had the capacity to take. We hope to return to normal operations next year and ask that everyone be understanding in complying with the special accommodations and restrictions necessary this year. We look forward to an exciting season now that games are underway.

WrestleTalk WWE EXTREME RULES 2020 RESULTS/REVIEW By Eric Jayden

This past Sunday, July 19, the WWE presented Extreme Rules "The Horror Show" from the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Cesaro/Shinsuke Nakamura defeated The New Day to capture the WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships Bayley defeated Nikki Cross Asuka vs Sasha Banks - No Contest Drew McIntyre defeated Dolph Ziggler Swamp Fight Match: Bray Wyatt defeated Braun Strowman An Eye For An Eye Match: Seth Rollins defeated Rey Mysterio

ory. I am really disappointed with the current product the WWE is putting out. Maybe it’s the pandemic or maybe it's just bad booking, but it seems to me that the WWE is mixing Hollywood with Pro Wrestling in an effort to appear differWell, where do I start? This is ent. If that is the case, then by far the worst pay-per-view I they are doing a terrible job have ever seen in recent mem- at it. The only match I en-

joyed was Asuka versus Sasha Banks, which had great storytelling along with action. This pay-per-view was called "The Horror Show" and it definitely lived up to the name. The Eye for an Eye Match definitely fell off the scripts of a traditional wrestling match it was bad storytelling coupled with bad movie theatrics. Rey Mysterio

having his eye pulled out by Seth Rollins looked phony and unrealistic. Whoever thought about this match should not be allowed to book a match again. The WWE can definitely do better! The question of the week comes from Harold D. in Belle Harbor and he asked, "What are your thoughts about Impact Wrestling?" Thank you for your question, Harold. I actually enjoy Impact Wrestling very much and at this stage I see Impact Wrestling slowly approaching AEW and the WWE with storylines and action. If they continue on this course, I can see them possibly surpassing both competitors. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy Have a Great Week!
