Reef Rising
The Bigger Boat is Here
Photographer Ed Gormley spotted action offshore around Beach 121st Street. A barge and a couple of tugs with pipes and concrete blocks were dumping the material into the ocean. Turns out, marine construction and dredging contractor, Weeks Marine, was carrying out the expansion of the governor’s plan to increase and enhance artificial reefs to “provide new marine habitats, promote biodiversity and restore fishery resources." Artificial reef construction is part of Governor Cuomo's NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-of-state sportsmen and sportswomen, and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. (Photo by Ed Gormley)
We got a bigger boat! Last weekend, the first of the six new larger NYC Ferry boats launched on the Rockaway route. The new 350-passenger vessel, the Ocean Queen Rockstar, holds more than twice the capacity of the regular NYC Ferry boats. In addition to the larger boat, NYC Ferry will continue to charter other vessels from companies such as Seasteak and American Princess Cruises to accommodate the large beach crowds, but more of the larger NYC Ferry boats are expected to arrive at the end of the summer.

Rockaway Times Sponsored: Rockaway Sandcastle Contest is July 29! It’s here! The 3rd Annual Rockaway Sandcastle Contest, sponsored by The Rockaway Times, is Sunday, July 29! For the third year in a row, The Rockaway Times, along with the help of NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office and plenty of local businesses, is bringing back this fun family tradition. Break out those shovels, buckets and other sand tools and head down to Beach 117th Street on Sunday and work your sand sculpting magic! Although it’s called a sandcastle contest, participants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. Whether you want to create a castle, a mermaid, a whale, or even a functional ski ball game (yes, we had one of those last year!), it’s up to you. All ages are welcome and no experience is necessary. Registration opens at 11 a.m. on the boardwalk at Beach 117th Street. The contest starts at 12 noon, so don’t be late! Latecomers will be able to join in until 12:30 p.m., but all participants only have until 2 p.m. to finish their creations. Judges will go around to critique each piece on different criteria like creativity, composition and wow factor! Winners will be announced between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. There will be three different age categories to compete in: 8 and Under, 9 to 15, and 16 and Up (that means you, adults!) Participants can register as an individual or as a group, but groups should be no more than five people. If a group contains participants that can fit into two age categories, it is up to the group to decide which age category they want to compete in upon registering. After registering, participants will receive a special tag, either a flip flop, a beach ball or a sun, with a number on it, indicating their group number and age category. Once they receive their tag, participants can choose any open plot in the roped-off contest area to make their creation.
The top three winners in each category will get a first, second or third place trophy. Plus, thanks to several local businesses, we have a plethora of additional prizes this yea!. Special thanks goes to Uncle Louie G’s of Rockaway Beach, The Fat Cardinal Bakery, Coastal Frozen Yogurt, Carvel, Lana’s Loft, and Zingara Vintage for donating gift certificates to their businesses. Hot
Yoga Rockaway Beach has also donated a one-month unlimited pass for hot yoga and CROM has donated a pair of boxing gloves and a one-month pass for Muay Thai classes for a child. The Wharf has donated a certificate for brunch for two. Avoid the Day Pop-up Bookstore has donated an amazing gift basket full of children’s books, a jenga game, a t-shirt and more. Far Rock Shop
has donated a hat and t-shirt combo and Mazzone Ace Hardware has donated a Yeti tumbler, valued at $30. Please make sure to support these amazing businesses to thank them for their support for the contest! While winners will receive the goodies mentioned above, most participants will receive something just for joining in (as long as supplies last). There will be giveaways like medals and sunglasses. There will also be some buckets and shovels available to those who don’t have their own, courtesy of Councilman Ulrich’s office, plus a cooler full of water and juice so participants can stay hydrated as they work. The Rockaway Sandcastle Contest was a longtime Rockaway tradition started by West End Realty many years ago. They ran it for about 18 years until the organizers moved out of town. The Rockaway Times picked up the shovel and started it up again in 2016. As we go to press, the forecast calls for a sunny 81-degree day, so make sure to bring hats, sunscreen and even umbrellas, or feel free to take a dip in the ocean when filling up your water buckets! In the event of rain, a rain date will be announced at a later time. Whether participating or not, all are encouraged to stop by and check out the amazing creations and cheer on the participants. Last year, we had a replica of the humpback whale that washed up on the beach, a beautifully detailed mermaid, tributes to Rockaway, a fidget spinner and much more. We’re sure Rockaway will impress once again! If anyone has any questions, please contact Katie McFadden at Katie@rockawaytimes.com

Beach 116th Firehouse Moves Out, Temporarily BUT PERMANENT PLANS ARE UNDERWAY By Katie McFadden
The Beach 116th Street firehouse is closed—temporarily. On Thursday, July 19, both Engine 268 and Ladder 137 of the Beach 116th Street firehouse, were relocated, as the old building will be undergoing asbestos removal in a process which is expected to take about a month. But a more permanent move may be in the firehouse’s future. On Thursday, Engine 268 was relocated downtown to the firehouse by the 100th Precinct, near Beach 94th Street, and housed with Engine 266. Ladder 137 was relocated uptown to the firehouse by Riis Park, to be housed with Engine 329. This move means that the response time could be affected if an incident were to occur from Rockaway Park to Neponsit. However, this move is reportedly temporary and
should only last about a month according to the FDNY, as the Beach 116th Street firehouse is undergoing repairs and abatement. However, the firehouse will be faced with a more permanent move in the future. In August 2017, the City Planning Commission approved the FDNY’s application to acquire the old HSBC Bank property on the bayside of Beach 116th Street, to be used as the future site of a brand new, resilient firehouse. This approval was done despite Community Board 14 advising against it, and suggesting
another location be utilized. Fast forward to almost a year later, it seems as if the plan is full steam ahead, as on July 13, 2018, a court order was filed by the City to condemn the HSBC Bank property, effectively taking it by eminent domain, allowing for the FDNY to build its new firehouse at this location. The owner of the prop-
erty will be paid for the property in the future. There was further evidence of this plan moving ahead on July 19, as while the Engine and Ladder were moving out of the Beach 116th Street firehouse, representatives from the NYC Department of Design and Construction, were seen at the HSBC property, taking measurements. The Rockaway Times reached out to one of the firefighters from the Beach 116th firehouse, who expressed concern that the acquisition of the HSBC property, at a time when the old firehouse is “temporarily” relocated, may give the city reason to abandon the repair work and asbestos removal in the old firehouse, and leave Engine 268 and Ladder 137 in their new temporary homes “indefinitely.” However FDNY officials insist this move is temporary.

***** The Daily News losing so much of its editorial staff is not good news. The News has been an invaluable watchdog and has called out, investigated, and uncovered many a government scandal. Mayor de Blasio, when told the News was in trouble a couple years back, emailed a confidante and asked, “That would be good for us, right?” In effect, he was speaking for all the hacks who prefer to work in secret with agendas that go unchecked. Without strong daily newspapers, who’s gonna watch what’s going on? ***** A ship and tugboats offshore were spotted dumping materials in the ocean last week. Fortunately, it was for a good reason. Artificial reefs are being created and/or enhanced as part of a New York State initiative. Such

Fun news...they'll be filming around the stores on Beach 129th Street on Friday, July 27. We hear most of the scenes of this American crime thriller will be shot in Ciro's Bakery. This also means no parking in the area starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday night, into Friday. ***** Remember when Blockbuster video store came along and put a lot of mom-and-pop stores out of business? The little guys just couldn’t compete. Well, Blockbuster couldn’t compete with Netflix. The former Goliath now has one store, just one! And it’s not at the foot of Beach 116th Street, where one of the Blockbuster stores once stood. The last store is in Oregon. ***** One of Rockaway’s great treasures is the Rockaway Theatre Company. Tickets can be purchased at RockawayTheatreCompany.org ***** Speed cameras in school zones are scheduled to be turned off on July 25 because the State has final say as to when cameras expire. The city says speeding has declined by 63 percent in school zones where the cameras are present. Right now a bill extending the rules to 2022 is stuck in committee in Albany. We’re ok with speed cameras in school zones as long as they install signs saying there is a speed camera (which is required). A speed camera set up in secret is more moneymaker than life saver. ***** Don’t ask us why they do these things in the summer. The NYC Department of Design and Construction will be closing east and west bound lanes on Beach Channel Drive from Beach 116th Street to Beach 124th for a few days to conduct soil sampling.
***** The Rockaway Business Alliance will be hosting its first popup market at the Beach 108th Street Ferry Landing this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. You’ll be able to Shop Small at some of your local favorites and check out a few new businesses as well. From apparel to local baked goods and books, there is sure to be something for everyone. ***** It’s Sandimonium! Sunday is the annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest (but you know, everyone’s a winner!). The fun takes place at Beach 117th, with registration on the boardwalk starting at 11 a.m. The contest starts at noon (don’t be late) and finishes at 2 p.m. The weather is looking great, so come on out and show what you’ve got! ***** Hey Parks and NPS. Why not let concessionaires run pop-up tiki bars on less crowded beaches (to draw people, to help offset losses from closed beaches)? And why not run zip lines! Our advice is free. You’re welcome.

7th Annual Two Bridges Music Festival Makes Rockaway Debut By Kami-Leigh Agard In its seventh year running, the annual Two Bridges Music Festival is finally crossing the Cross Bay Bridge, coming to Rockaway for the first time this Saturday, July 28, and the
festival’s sponsors couldn’t be more stoked. According to co-organizer, Mason Poretto, this year’s band lineup really reflects Rockaway’s best, and what better place to showcase the festival than at local music powerhouse, A/B Studios. Broad Channel brothers, Ma-
son and Frank Poretto, founded the Two Bridges Music Festival in 2011, purely for the love of music and their community. Mason Poretto said, “My brother and I own Broad Channel-based building and home general contractor company, Two Bridges Home Improvement, which keeps us extremely busy. However besides that,
we are both avid musicians. My brother and I are somewhat local music veterans as we have played with rock bands, Sixth Borough, and The Poor House, and now are members of Phil and The Family Band. So when we came up with the idea for the Two Bridges Music Festival Continued on page 9

a year before Sandy, it took off, and we have been running it every year, with the exception of 2017.” Poretto said the music festival has been hosted in various Broad Channel venues such as the Broad Channel Athletic Club and Grassy Point Bar and Grill, but they always kept their eyes on Rockaway, where they ultimately wanted to host the event. “Because of issues with noise, parking and other obstacles, we could never find a venue in Rockaway. However this year, it’s finally happening at A/B Studios. We couldn’t be happier. And thankfully with the help of co-sponsors, Frisco Granada, Bryan Doremus, Rockawaves Radio, and of course, A/B Studios, we are finally bringing the Two Bridges Music Festival to Rockaway!” Poretto cheered. From jazz to rock to punk, the Festival has quite the eclectic
lineup featuring: The BEasy Band, Patsy, Dave Kellan Band, Ecstatic Madmen, Phil and the Family Band, Revels Engine, The Skates, Arson Welles, Blame Mercury, The Skells and Rattrap Bumpkin. Also, there will be local artisan vendors joining in on the fun, while showcasing their unique items. Expect to see Ethereal Elements, WickCraft Candles by Sarah, Betsy’s Bungalow and Far Rock Shop. When asked what he feels sets Two Bridges Music Festi-
val apart from the other musical festivals, Poretto said, “Besides a fantastic lineup of bands, we always offer attendees the highest quality in sound and production of all the summer music festivals. A lot of festivals don’t put a lot of emphasis on their sound production, however for us, it’s a must. My brother, Frank, and I are also both sound technicians for the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s music studio, which we built and currently manage. Two Bridges is known for
Page 9 giving the best in music and sound.” Poretto said their past festivals were much larger, some with even two rotating stages, however, though this year’s a bit smaller, he feels it’s going to be even more amazing. “Just to finally be in Rockaway is an awesome feat within itself, and the support we have received from locals all around tops it off. We don’t do this to make money. We do this solely out of our passion for music and community. We started planning this in April, and it’s a lot of work, but the true profit is in seeing the reception and overall fun everyone has.” Two Bridges Music Festival kicks off this Saturday, July 28 from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at A/B Studios, located at 111-22 Rockaway Beach Blvd. Besides fantastic entertainment, there will also be food and great drinks on tap. Have a Say in Wind Power Off Rockaway Should offshore wind power come to Rockaway? You can have a say. While the battle over Williams’ latest natural gas pipeline project continues, there’s a chance to bring the alternative—offshore wind energy—to Rockaway’s waters. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is currently seeking recommendations and input on where to place an offshore wind energy development within the New York Bight region. This area covers parts of Long Island and New Jersey. If you think Rockaway should be the location to benefit from this wind energy, the time to speak up is now. Community groups, local businesses and individuals are encouraged to send their comments, recommending the “Hudson North” area (off the shore of Rockaway and
Long Beach) for consideration and the reasons why it would benefit the peninsula. Comments are being accepted until 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 30. Comments can be submitted electronically, or by mail if postmarked by July 30. To submit comments electronically, go to: http://www.regulations. gov. In the tab titled, ‘‘Enter Keyword or ID,’’ search for BOEM– 2018-0004. Follow the instructions to submit public comments in response to this document. Pico Pleases Dear Editor: Just wanted to give a shout out to Pico for being so accommodating. We went there recently with a friend who has celiac disease and they went above and beyond to make her comfortable. They were so knowledgeable about what was safe for her to eat and they offered substitutions for things that weren't. Thanks Chris, Tim and all the others at Pico who took such good care of us. Carole Chimera Thanks Dear Editor:
THURSDAY, JULY 26, 2018 Thank you, Rockaway Times for covering the Hope for Warriors weekend from July 12-15, 2018. Your article accompanied by photos of the Warriors painted a picture of how much fun our over 60 guest veterans and their families had, especially with the water sports. As the co-coordinator of the Rockaway Beach/Breezy Point AmpSurf Chapter (one of only three chapters in the U.S.), I can say unequivocally, after being involved with this program for 13 years, that this was our best event ever! Over the span of two days, the vets and their families enjoyed beautiful sunshine and gentle breezes along with a very accommodating surf. For many, it was the first opportunity to be in the ocean and experience the joy of surfing and the healing power of the ocean. The enthusiasm and stoke was extremely high for both the guests as well as our volunteers. Please note that AmpSurf will be hosting another surf

I wonder if it may have something to do with the fact that I am married to the woman who writes your Recipe Swap column (Sharon Feldman)? She cooks these amazing meals every night, and I am her guinea pig to test them on. Do you think this may have something to do with my inability to drop a few pounds? I totally do ... so with all that being said, THIS is my SACRIFICE for Rockaway and I will faithfully carry out my duties for my fellow Rockaway neighbors at the expense of my waistWaist Not line. Honey ... what's for dinner Dear Editor: I was born and raised here tonight ....??? Andy Feldman in Rockaway (and have never left!), and just wanted to drop a note to let you know about Bike Bull my sacrifice for my beloved hometown. I have purchased a Dear Editor: treadmill, 10lb. dumbbells and Whether you love bike shara drum kit, all in an effort to exercise to lose some weight and ing or hate it, why isn't anyone a couple of inches off my waist asking the obvious question, (which ain't easy at 65 years why the hell is the City even old). Riis Park Lifeguards Take on AC Red Bull Competition By Katie McFadden
The Riis Park lifeguards do an amazing job of keeping patrons safe each summer, but Red Bull didn’t give them wings. On Tuesday, July 17, a team of four Riis Park lifeguards were among 50 lifeguard teams from New York to Virginia that competed in the Fourth Annual Red Bull Surf and Rescue. The Riis Park lifeguard team put up a good fight, but wound up coming up a bit shorter than expected after some events were eliminated due to poor weather. On Tuesday, Riis lifeguards, Pat Kilgallen, Carolyn Crocker, and Tom and Brian O’Neill, went down to Atlantic City, NJ to compete in the Red Bull Surf and Rescue competition. The event was supposed to include four events including a surf-swim relay, a 500-meter paddleboard relay, and a double rescue scenario of a Paddle Pick-Up and Swim Rescue. However, as the threat
of thunderstorms neared, the event was cut down to just two events. Things were looking good for Riis when the team took first place in the first event of the Surf Swim relay. They were hoping to come out on top for the whole competition, with their specialty being the Paddle Pick-Up and Swim Rescues. “We thought we’d have a real good shot at winning that. We do pretty well in that event in the National Champi-
onships, so we were putting all of our chips into that round,” Kilgallen said. However, with the weather cutting the event short, Riis never had a chance to show off their rescue skills in the last events. Instead, the contest only lasted for two rounds. Cut down to just 25 teams in the paddleboard relay event, Riis wound up winning 4th place, which placed them out of the top three for the overall competition, even though they
took first in the swim relay in round one. Ocean City Beach Patrol #1 wound up winning the contest, with Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol in second and Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol #1 taking third. Despite the upset, all is not lost for Riis. The Red Bull event was just a warm-up for the ultimate lifeguard competition. Riis will be sending about 10 to 12 of their best lifeguards to the United States Lifesaving Association’s National Lifeguard Championships from August 9-11. The Riis Park lifeguards have participated in this contest for several years and have often had a strong showing, taking first, second and third in several events. Stay tuned and make sure to read The Rockaway Times to find out how these Riis Park guardians of the sea do in the National Lifeguard Championships. Photo by Greg Mionske / Red Bull Content Pool.

GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA: YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL PARK!
By Erin Schoppmeyer NPS Park Ranger
When was the last time you visited a national park? Did you know you have one right in your own backyard? Allow me to introduce you to Gateway National Recreation Area. Established in 1972, Gateway was the first federally protected urban park. The Park is comprised of sites in New Jersey and three of New York City's boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens. Whether or not Gateway is familiar to you, let us delve a little deeper into the local sites of the Park: Fort Tilden, now known for its beach, was once a U.S Army Coast Artillery Post that was responsible for protecting New York Harbor during both World Wars. Next to it is Jacob Riis
Park, named after the famous journalist who shed light on the plight of the poor at the turn of the century. In Broad Channel, you have the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This 9,155-acre preserve was set aside for migratory birds, horseshoe crabs, monarch butterflies and more. Not just a “refuge for wildlife, the park trails offer humans an escape from the hectic lifestyle of New York City. On the other side of the bay, you have Floyd Bennett Field, which is known for being New York City’s first municipal airport. In the 1930s, Floyd Bennett Field was the site of many record-breaking flights. Famous pilots such as Amelia Earhart have made voyages from here. Has your interest been piqued yet? Are you itching to explore? Check out some of the Park's amazing (and free!) recreational opportunities that are offered this summer!

A Weekend of Female Surf Power By Katie McFadden
The fellas aren’t the only ones that know how to shred the waves. Surfing is also a big sport among women. So much so, that there’s a whole film festival dedicated to women surfers. The 6th Annual NY Women's Surf Film Festival is this weekend. From Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29, it’s all about the ladies. The NY Women's Surf Film Festival, presented by Lava Girl Surf, celebrates the filmmakers and female wave riders who live to surf, highlighting their sense of adventure, connection to the ocean and love for their own communities and those they discover. The festival kicks off on Friday, July 27 with an art exhibit at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street). Starting at 7 p.m., you can see the work of surf and lifestyle photographer, Luki O’Keefe, in her exhibit, Cyan Lull. The night will also include a meet and greet with guest filmmakers and notable surfers. There will be an opening presentation for the
festival at 8:30 p.m., and a film screening will follow at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 28 will sure be sweet as Rockaway Beach Bakery (87-10 Rockaway Beach Boulevard) is being incorporated into the festival. Head to the bakery from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. for a Surf Market featuring a collection of surf and lifestyle brands, and a complimentary beauty bar, with drinks, food, music and more. At night, the films will continue back at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, starting at 7 p.m. From 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be another meet and greet with some of the surfers and filmmakers before the first film screening at 8:30 p.m. The first film will be followed by an intermission, and then another screening will take place at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, July 29 is a day to enjoy the surf and sand, and also show it some respect. There will be a beach cleanup from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., followed by a paddle out and group surf session from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Beach 90th Street. The NY Women’s Surf Film
Festival supports the Changing Tides Foundation, whose mission is to bridge the gap between travelers and the primary causes on the ground and Plastic Tides, a team that combines adventure and science to address ocean plastic pollution. The festival will be exclusively premiering the Changing Tides Foundation’s short films Sameseas, Surfing to Cope, Inspire and Las Shapers on the East Coast. This year, stories span the globe and feature films from the United States, France, Australia, Norway, Mexico, Bangladesh, Indonesia and
the Dominican Republic. For the sixth annual festival, the selections attempt to highlight the inspiring lives of female surfers, their unique journeys, passions and their connection to the ocean. One of the highlights, Surfing to Cope by Katie Walsh, tells the story of Kauai’s Brianna Cope, a 23-year-old Hawaiian who attempts to make the world tour while coming to terms with a physical challenge that has shaped her life. Tinnitus is the perception of sound that has no external source. The sensation is commonly described as ringing in the ears, but the sound can be perceived to be inside or outside the head or in one or both ears. The sound quality is commonly described as humming, tonal ringing, hissing, static, roaring, or a cicada-like clicking. Objective tinnitus, which is a sound generated within the body by blood flow, muscle contractions, or cochlear emissions that can be detected and measured by an external observer, is very rare. The much more common variant is subjective tinnitus. Tinnitus occurs in up to one fourth of adults, but is severely bothersome in less than 10 percent of those persons. When severe, tinnitus can negatively affect sleep,
Sounds Like Tinnitus concentration, emotions, and social interactions. The loudness, severity, and effect of tinnitus can change over time. It can progress in severity in some persons, while it can lessen or disappear in others. Tinnitus is almost always associated with hearing loss, especially high-frequency hearing loss. That is why audiologic (hearing) testing is an important component in the evaluation of persistent tinnitus. In evaluating tinnitus, it is important to look for ear pain or drainage as that may indicate an infectious source. Someone with a history of tinnitus with vertigo and/or imbalance may have Meniere’s disease, an acoustic neuroma (growth on the acoustic nerve), or migraine-associated tinnitus. Brain imaging (MRI or CT scan) is usually not indicated unless the patient has tinnitus in only one ear, pulsatile tinnitus, or one-sid-
ed neurologic abnormalities or one-sided hearing loss. Because tinnitus may change over time, treatment is often problematic. In addition, studies have shown that the majority of people with tinnitus are minimally bothered by it. Many people who seek help with tinnitus do so out of concern that it is a symptom of a possible worse disease such as progressive hearing loss and deafness. A wide range of drug classes have been tested in the treatment of tinnitus with limited success. These medications include antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, anti-seizure medications, and anesthetics, as well as herbal extracts, dietary supplements, and vitamins. One of the mainstays of treatment that has had better success is acoustic stimulation. Sound, in a variety of forms and intensities, has been used for
centuries to treat tinnitus. The use of sound is based on the concept that hearing loss causes homeostatic compensatory changes in the brain (known as central auditory gain) to maintain proper ear neurologic function. In other words, in response to hearing loss, the brain basically turns up the volume. Using sound treatment allows the brain to turn the volume back down. In addition, psychological intervention has been successful in decreasing the negative effect of tinnitus on a patient’s life and well-being. If you or someone you know suffers from tinnitus, it is important to be medically evaluated, but also to remember that tinnitus rarely remains the same over time and that there is a good chance that it may lessen by itself. Live For Now The best time of my life is NOW. This message is from a meditation I once listened to by Deepak Chopra. It made a big impact in my life, inspiring me to live each day fully, no matter what was going on in my world. But the truth is, I learned a valuable lesson at a young age when my baby brother, John, died at age 22. Our world changed drastically from a perfectly happy family, to one with a devastating loss. Never had we had such loss in our immedi-
ate family. My mom and dad were crushed. My brothers and sisters could not even believe this would ever happen in our close-knit family. But it did and we have since learned so much from our loss. For one thing, we have only today. Nothing is guaranteed and you must live your life as if this is your last day on earth. Making every moment matter became my mantra. There was no time to look back and wish I had done things differ-

ently. Working toward living in the now. Waking up every day and saying, “This is going to be the best day of my life.” Imagine having this mantra in your head each morning as you wake up, step out of bed or, perhaps, stay in bed, but having the thought that today you will do your best to make it the greatest day. We have one life. Live well, no regrets. There are times we struggle with our responsibilities and all the many tasks that must be completed by the end, of the day, but in the end it all gets done in good time. Learn to let go of the angst and be still. You will find such healing living in the moment. Be ok with the highs and lows of life. Acceptance is really hard for most of us. We think life should be different but, in fact, life can be really hard at times. “Do I contradict myself; I am large, I contain multitudes,” Walt Whitman said. How many times do we say, “I am so busy.” Time management is a skill. We have
The Rockaway Times choices to make every day. Do I slow down and say no, I can’t take that job or must I say yes to every request. What is important to you in your life? Family, friends, job, etc? We have to choose wisely how to spend our time and with whom. Self-care is a necessary tool to help you feel healthy and happy. Learning to slow down may help you find more time for yourself and others. A life well-spent is living moment to moment and trying to enjoy each one without judging or trying to change something we cannot change. I am in awe when I wake in the morning and thank God for this day, moment, and life. How lucky are we? We are living well today. Tomorrow, everything can change but rest easy we are having the best time of our lives. May you wake up with a smile, may you know love in your life, may you be free of suffering and be at ease in your life.

Dragonflies, Cicadas and Monarchs By Lou Pastina
Yes, it’s summertime in Rockaway and the insects have arrived. Or haven’t you noticed the swarms of dragonflies all over? My backyard resembles a World War I dogfight with mid-air battles occurring over Hydrangea. These fierce-looking flying battleships appear terrifying and they are very territorial, but they are not harmful to humans. Unlike bees and wasps, they don’t sting or bite, and in fact are actually helping by feasting on mosquitos. But they are wild-looking. Especially on the boardwalk by the concession stands where they seem to hang out, just like everyone else. Maybe they dig the scene too? I heard my first cicada today, signaling that August is not far away. These weird beings take
seventeen years to find their way above ground, and are so happy they made it that they truly make a racket about it. The sounds they make are actually described as singing, and no they don’t sing with the Grayriders, so let’s get that out of the way right up front. They are the loudest of all insects though and they sing the most when it’s the hottest. It’s sometimes hard to figure out where they are when they are singing. They are like the insect world's ventriloquists! But that comes in handy because Praying Mantis, birds and bats, to name a few, hunt them. I don’t think dragonflies like their taste though. In some countries, people eat them. I hope that restaurant never comes to Rockaway! I have seen only one Monarch this year, and that’s a shame. Apparently there is a lack of Milkweed plants on which the
Monarch feed. Even though they seem to float along, they need food to travel the long distances they travel. Perhaps the lack of Monarchs traveling north or south from our country through Mexico and South America has something to do with our immigration policy. I, for one, am in favor of allowing Monarchs free entry. Not Kings or Queens, I mean the butterflies. You know June came and went and I did not see one June bug, or Lightening bug. It was so much fun to catch them and put them in a bottle when we were kids. Where have they all gone? Maybe they have been in communication with the Monarchs and are boycotting us? I hope not. I know that Milkweed sounds like a weed, but they do have flowers and they do attract butterflies, especially Monarchs. So if you are planning your garden for next
year, set aside a space for some Milkweed. And if you see those dive-bombing dragonflies, don’t worry, they are eating the hell out of the mosquitos. And when you see that Praying Mantis just sitting there looking like he isn’t doing anything, you should know that he has his eye on that squawking cicada with the big eyes. Six years after Sandy and I am reminded of Jeff Goldblum’s prophetic statement in the first Jurassic Park, “life finds a way.” And life, at least insect life, has certainly found its way back to Rockaway! What follows? Certainly dolphins and whales have emerged in Rockaway, big time. Could you imagine if there were other types of wildlife here like deer and bears? It could help keep the crowds down during the summer. Just something to think about, just saying.

Change Of Pace
I am not a big fan of dining out but when I do decide to visit a food establishment, I want to be treated like a human being and not like a number. The Cracker Barrel Restaurant chain had this customer relations thing down to a science and I used to frequent these restaurants a lot in years gone by. Every Cracker Barrel also had a big
fireplace replete with a bearskin rug, which I absolutely loved, but unfortunately the management of Cracker Barrel has a policy prohibiting customers from taking naked selfies on their bearskin rug. Suffice it to say, I am not allowed to frequent Cracker Barrel anymore. That being said, this past Sunday my beloved Grace (aka: "she who must be obeyed") and I enjoyed a late breakfast at the Belle Harbor Steak House on Beach 116th Street. The staff was very accommodating and friendly and the food—terrific. We knew this restaurant was firing on all cylinders as the second we walked through the door, the host greeted us with a sincere smile and friendly, welcoming banter making the two of us feel as if we were regular and valued patrons you know, human! Prior to our seating (we opted for a booth) the bus staff had meticulously cleared,
cleaned and set our table and as we settled into our seats, a waitress appeared with a great big smile along with our menus and we were on our way to an extremely enjoyable breakfast. As we were eating, the chef also stopped by our table to say hello and inquire if all was well—it was. Breakfast was great, service was terrific and the bill, more than reasonable. As we were leaving, I told Grace that I had thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast experience and we should do it again soon. Without missing a beat, "she who must be obeyed" replied that since the restaurant did not have a bearskin rug, the odds were pretty much in my favor that they would allow me to return. It was still early in the afternoon and as we moseyed on down Beach Channel Drive I remarked to my beloved, "Why don't we jump on the ferry and take a ride to Manhattan? We can grab a drink
and then enjoy a leisurely ferry ride back to Rockaway." Grace looked at me as if I had two heads. "You hate Manhattan and you constantly refuse to go into the city for anything with me and now you want to take the ferry over to Wall Street?" I told Grace that I know she has been wanting to ride the Rockaway ferry for some time now and that if it makes her happy, yes, I was willing to accompany her to Manhattan. Grace was so giddy with anticipation that she sprung for the $11 it cost for the round-trip ducats. (Yeah, I know, I'm a cheap date but hey, I paid for breakfast!) The day was overcast with intermittent showers, but after we boarded we still went to the open upper deck where we found two seats facing starboard or the Brooklyn side of our journey over to Pier 11. The rain held off and the 45-minute journey through Continued on page 29

me and a bottled water for my beloved and then proceeded to Gate A for our return trip to Rockaway. We were lucky enough to grab the same two seats on the return trip, which afforded us a view of the sights we missed on the way in. As far as I was concerned, it was a lovely day spent together but I do appreciate the fact that "she who must be obeyed" is also possessed with a sense of humor. Her only remark to me on the return trip was "There is something seriously wrong with you!"
Continued from Page 28 Jamaica Bay, under the Marine Parkway Bridge, out the Rockaway Inlet into the Lower Bay and then under the Verrazano Bridge, through the Narrows into the Upper Bay to Wall Street was, for lack of a better word, delightful. After disembarking at the Pier 11 ferry landing, Grace asked if I wanted to walk up to the Seaport District for a drink. Now, this is where I knew things would get dicey. I said absolutely not, as I had Broad Channel, why would no intention of visiting Manhattan and suggested we grab anyone want to live anywhere our drinks from the Ferry else? Cafe on the landing instead. Shooting me a look that would straighten out your curly fries, Grace stated, "But you are in Manhattan!" I calmly walked over the Editor@RockawayTimes.com edge of the landing and, looking down, pointed out that we were actually above the water of New York Harbor and not on Manhattan Island proper. Long Beach Film Festival Screening Next Week Why not get out of town for a movie night? No, not to the UA theater in Sheepshead Bay, but to Long Beach for the Long Beach International Film Festival (LBIFF). From August 1 through 4, Long Beach will be the place to be with plenty of film screenings, culinary events, live music and more, all taking place in or around the Allegria Hotel (80 W Broadway) and the Regal Lynbrook 13 theater. Fifty films have been selected for screening at this unique, beachfront film festival. The diverse lineup of films includes feature-length narratives and documentaries, as well as short and animated movies suitable for all ages. Professional and amateur filmmakers will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards throughout the festival. This year, a film called Rockaway will make its New York de-
but, but don’t let the name fool you. The film is actually about growing up in East Rockaway in Long Island. Groupmuse By Marilyn Macron aka Maria Cowhey
Last September, I was lucky enough to attend a Groupmuse organized by Dan Guarino at the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Groupmuse is a network in which local classical musicians are matched with hosts who would like to bring classical music salons to their living rooms (and sometimes larger venues, like RAA). Chamber music began when members of the aristocracy would have classical musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Schubert play in their homes for their guests. Groupmuse brings this art form to communities so that people can generate their own classical music house concerts. Falling in love with this
idea, as I used to host piano and violin salons for my three classically trained daughters and their friends growing up, I became a member and an avid attendant and host of Groupmuses. On June 29, The New York Times lauded pianist, Daniel Colalillo, performed at my home for an audience of perhaps 20 people. A vibrant and eclectic group of people attended, many of who were strangers to each other before the event. One of the wonderful things about Groupmuse is that it creates a community of new friends who share interests and enthusiasm. Daniel’s program included: Olivier Messiaen - Prelude No. 1 La Colombe (The Dove) Claude Debussy Preludes Book II No. 1 “Brouillards” No. 8 “Ondine” Preludes Book 1 No. 10 “la cathedrale engloutie” John Adams - China Gates Alexander Scriabin - Prelude and Nocturne for the left
hand alone Op. 9 Chopin - Ballade No. 4 in F minor Op. 52 Daniel enriched his performance by briefly explaining what the pieces were about, such as Ondine, Debussy’s prelude inspired by Aloysius Bertrand’s tale of a water sprite singing to lure her mortal love to her sea kingdom. When he resists, as it would result in his death, she breaks into glistening waterdrops against his window. Due to the themes in this tale, there are lovely glistening passages interspersed with agitation. Daniel made the piano sing the tale. Daniel exercised exquisite control over the sensitive Scriabin Prelude and Nocturne for the left hand alone. Adam’s China Gates was performed as a dreamy, melodious series of feathery notes almost floating above the piano and through the air. Cho-
pin’s turbulent Ballade No. 4, despite its many difficult double-note passages, appeared effortless. The tension rose to a breaking point at the end when it was silenced by its dramatic ending. Daniel has recently released a CD, Mostly Scriabin, that is available on CdBaby, iTunes, and Amazon. Stay tuned for information on my next Groupmuse event. If you are interested in finding out more about Groupmuse, whether it be attending or hosting, check them out at www.groupmuse.com. Photo by Dan Guarino.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
Putting Rockaway On the Map for Autism Awareness The Dance Out Under the Stars for Autism Awareness, hosted by Rockaway Beach Autism Families (RBAF) on Thursday, July 12, was such a fun time for everyone. It was great seeing individuals on the spectrum showing off their dance moves and engaging with others. Even my daughter got fired up, pulling people to sway rhythmically to the fabulous music spun by Deejay Byg Fury. It was the first time I saw her being so engaging and well, previously unbeknownst to me — my daughter could dance! The euphoric smiles radiating from the crowd were so beautiful. Even folks who just happened to be there, got in on the fun, embracing what our goals were for the event — building autism awareness on the peninsula and having a blast doing so! I want to thank Caracas owner, Maribel Araujo and manager, Guido Alizo, for graciously giving us use of their space; Deejay Byg Fury who volunteered to make this an electric time with fabulous music; Gelen Rios of event planning company, Arma Tu Party, who after contacting her at the 11th hour, delivered even more memorable moments with a photo booth that everyone loved. Also, thank you to the Rockaway Beach Autism Families’ members, who came out in full force with their loved ones to dance it up. The gen-
esis for the idea of the Dance Out was at a family group meeting at Jane Garfield Frank’s house earlier in the spring, and Jane, thank you for coming up with a fantastic idea, and I’m looking forward to rockin’ out with you and the community at our Rock Out for Autism event hosted with Jammin’ Jon at Caracas this Sunday, July 29. Countless others I want to thank, including Florence Ferguson of Friends of the Beach 59th Street Playground Association, who always comes out in zealous support. Also, RBAF members, Christine Dydzuhn; Katherine Schepper Ryan; Rojo Rafiringa; my daughter’s dad, Rado Rafiringa; the Wades, Woolf and Roberts families — gosh — too many to list! Forgive me if I omitted someone. And of course, my family, who always supports me in my advocacy, and my crown jewel and motivation to keep pushing, my daughter, Soanirina Rafiringa. After the event, I started reflecting on how I started this family group just to connect with other parents about the daily struggles and joys of autism. Then as more ideas came along, my aim became not only to connect, but to put Rockaway on the map as a forward-thinking community for autism awareness and opportunities for our loved ones on the spectrum. Local business owners —
Page 37
please join Rockaway Beach Autism Families in working towards putting our peninsula and Broad Channel on the map for creating active and fulfilling employment for individuals on the spectrum. The spectrum of autism is wide, and you would be both surprised and pleased to learn the skills that our loved ones have to offer. Not only would it be good for business, but also socially and ethically beneficial in showing that our local business community is willing and able to give our ASD populace a thriving chance in being productive and employable. As quoted in a CNN article, “The Reality of Finding a Job with Autism,” (cnn.com/2013/04/30/ health/irpt-autism-in-theworkplace/index.html), Ann Cameron Williams, chief research and innovations officer with The Arc, a national organization of and for people with intellectual and related developmental disabilities, said, “When you have a company that is willing to hire
someone with a disability, it's a positive reflection on that company.” She also stated that companies are starting to see not only the business benefits of hiring someone on the spectrum, but also the ethical and public relations benefits. So, let’s do it! I know it’s not going to happen overnight, but if we work together, the possibilities are endless! This Sunday, July 29 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., join RBAF and Jammin’ Jon in our Rock Out for Autism Awareness summer concert at Caracas, Beach 106th Concession. We have quite the eclectic entertainment lineup: Malagasy (from Madagascar) band, NY VALIHA, Kyle Wade, RCK97 with Ras Atiba, Jammin’ Jon and the Danny Berke Trio. Plus with face-painting, raffle prizes and giveaways, this will be a fun event for everyone! For more information about upcoming events and group meetings, checkout Rockaway Beach Autism Families on Facebook or email: ourartisticchild@outlook.com

Two Adaptive Surf Programs Hit Beach 67th on Saturday
Two is better than one, and on Saturday, July 28, not one, but two separate groups will be helping those who may not normally be able to surf, a chance to surf the waves with adaptive surfing equipment. Life Rolls On and AmpSurf will be on Beach 67th Street helping those who are handicapped, and those from the Rockaway Special Olympics Program, learn to surf. In a strange coincidence, both adaptive surf programs are scheduled for Saturday at a.m. until noon on Beach 67th both Special Athletes and local Beach 67th Street, but the more Street, except they’ll be hosting veterans. If anyone is interested the merrier. And the more who offer to volunteer, the better. Both programs are seeking volunteers to make them a success. AmpSurf just finished up helping wounded warriors surf the waves as part of the Hope for the Warriors weekend two weeks ago. Now they’re at it again, but this time they’ll be hosting the Rockaway Beach Special Athletes on Beach 67th Street from 9 a.m. to noon. Then, they’ll be doing it all again on Saturday, August 25 from 9

For the past few years, another group, Life Rolls On has hosted the They Will Surf Again event, which helps those with spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders, be able to surf using adaptive surf equipment. They’re also looking for help for their event on Saturday, July 28, also at Beach 67th Street. At this point, they’re mostly seeking volunteers to help with set up and take down for the event. Set up begins at 6 a.m., followed by check in at 7:30 a.m. and the adaptive surf clinic takes place from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Other volunteer roles may also still be open. To register to volunteer, head to https://liferollson.org/ny-volunteer-reg Whether you volunteer or not, these events on Saturday are sure to warm anyone’s heart, so head down to Beach 67th Street to root on the participants and volunteers and watch this magical day transpire.
