Healy’s Pub Stays All in the Family for 50 Years

“Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name… and they’re always glad you came!” There aren’t too many bars on the peninsula that give you that feeling of stepping onto the set of “Cheers” like Healy’s Pub does. Besides the weekday happy hours, frozen mugs to keep beers chilled, live bands or DJs that have people dancing into the night on weekends and extra large frozen drinks like creamiscles all summer, there’s something else that has kept the pub located on Rockaway Beach Drive between Beach 108th and 109th, running successfully for nearly 50 years. “Everybody knows each other here. It’s like Cheers, everybody knows your name and if you come in and people don’t know you, they make you feel comfortable,” former owner Tom Healy Sr. said. “It has a welcoming atmosphere. It’s like Cheers, where you walk into a place and you run into somebody you know that’s probably gonna make you laugh,” Tommy Healy said. “Everyone feels like they’re welcome and if someone ever needs something, they know they can come to us. People can come and feel like they’re friends with the other customers and the people working behind the bar and the owners,” Kevin Healy added. As Rockaway’s longest-running business to be owned by one family, Healy’s Pub has always kept it in the family, not only through ownership but
in the way in which customers are treated like relatives. And it’s been that way for nearly 50 years. On April 23, 1968, Healy’s Pub opened its doors, replacing the previous watering hole, Morrissey’s. George Healy had spent many years working in the hotel business, from bellhop to general manager. “He was bellman for 26 years and the Tishman Brothers hired him to staff their new hotels. He would staff about seven hotels and he became manager of them. Then they wanted him to act as chief of security along with being manager, but they didn’t want to pay him extra. He didn’t want to do it without being compensated,” Tom Healy Sr. said of his father. Coincidentally, at that time, the bar near Beach 108th was up for sale and George decided to take a risk in another aspect of hospitality—the bar business. With the help of his mother, Sarah and sister, Helen, George pinched pennies and was able to strike a deal with Paddy Morrisey for the bar. Ever since then, Healy’s has been passed down, generation-to-generation, Healy-toHealy. In 1985, Tom Healy Sr., along with his brother Jimmy, took over the taps from their father and became owners. Over the past decade, another generation of Healys has claimed ownership, with Tom Sr.’s sons, Tommy and Kevin running the show. “I passed it on to them because they’re a lot like me in certain ways and I knew they’d keep the traditions of the bar going,” Tom said. His sons credit their father with making Healy’s what it is. “Throughout the last 30 years, our father has been the most instrumental figure at the bar. He’s done the most work there and he’s one of the most important reasons the bar was as successful as it was and continues to be,” Tommy said. In the years that the Healys have been running the bar, they’ve found that the business is in their blood, in more ways than one. “After doing it for so long, it becomes a part of you. It’s in your blood. I know people throw that phrase

around loosely, but it really does become a part of you and I’m proud and thrilled to still feel this way after all these years,” Tom said. In its 50 years, Healy’s has also become a big part of the community. To many, Healys is a place of special meaning. “We’ve met a lot of people over the years and a lot of them have come in here and told me they met their significant other people or they got engaged here,” Tom said. Some may also remember that Healy’s was the place that brought the original Irish Festival to Rockaway. “We started the Rockaway Irish Festival and ran it for about 25 years before the Ancient Or-
ing and Christmas, we always serve food so our customers that don’t have anywhere to go, can be with us,” Kevin said. That family feeling not only comes from the men that run it, but the bartenders who make customers feel at home, like Virginia Connell, Johnny Mack, Mike McGee, Sue O’Shea, Danny Powers and more. “Our bartenders aren’t just employees. They have a genuine interest in the bar and its customers,” Kevin said. In April 2018, Healy’s will celebrate its 50th anniversary, which is a big accomplishment for any business. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a community that supports us

der of Hibernians picked it up again,” Tom said. But most importantly, Healys is a place that has been there for the community. “We’ve always helped support the community in times of need. You have to help people, you can’t just take,” Tom said. “If there was something someone needed, my father has always been the first to offer. He’s the first guy to send flowers to someone’s mother’s wake, the first to hold a fundraiser,” Kevin said. The owners and staff also treat customers like family. “Some of the faces, you see here day in and day out, and to some of them, we are their family. Some people come from outside of New York and don’t have anyone else. For holidays, like Thanksgiv-
like we support them for the past 50 years,” Tom said. “I don’t think anyone else on the peninsula, and not even that many bars in the city, can say they’ve had a bar in the same family for 50 years. It’s a great accomplishment for our family and our customers,” Tommy said. “Being in business for this long says a lot about the family that runs it. It’s not always easy running a business with family, but the fact that we can do it and get along shows how solid of a business it is,” Kevin said. “We’re blessed to have gone this far. I don’t know what we did to make it this good but now that it is good, we wanna keep it this way,” Tom said. Cheers to 50 years, Healys!

Dine Out Not Under I see subway officials are weighing whether or not to ban eating underground. Eeew. I commute by bike so maybe my views are a bit parochial. But I don’t care. You are committing a high crime against human decency if you eat on the subway. It’s a crime even if it’s legal. First off, I fall on the — we need less laws — side of things. So I’m torn about making it illegal to eat on the subway. But it’s pretty obvious we need laws just so people aren’t friggin
gross. Those of us who grew up with seven TV channels remember Gilligan’s Island and how much dog crap was everywhere. Curb Your Dog meant don’t let the mutt go on the sidewalk, have him crap in the street, in the vicinity of the curb. The end of blocks or at the corners is where a lot of dog owners took their pooping pooches. Which created a hazard, of sorts. You’d be getting off a city bus and you’d have to leap past a mountain range of dog crap

to get to the curb. Some of the mountains had shoe prints, clear evidence that some leaps came up short. It was not pretty. Minefields were not limited to street corners. You’d get to a park and maybe play tackle with all the leaves on the ground or just pick up a stack and chuck them in the air. But sure enough, you’d soon be sniffing, wondering who got the dog crap on ‘em. It wasn’t against the law so people didn’t care much. One girl used to walk her Mastiff in the middle of the street and think nothing of allowing her huge dog to leave a huge pile right near the yellow line. Inevitably, cars would roll over it and smear the crapola up and down the street. So much for stickball games! There aren’t too many people from those days who can’t remember trying to get crap off the bottom of their sneakers, usually with a popsicle stick. Ah, the memories, I can still smell ‘em. Of course, this was all nor-

mal stuff. Until the Pooper Scooper law. Which really did transform the landscape of well, the landscape. It became normal to expect people to pick up after their dogs. And for the most part, the law (and expectations) hold up. Eating on the subway is not the plague that dog crap was and maybe a law is not needed to outlaw it, but people need to know it’s foul, gross and nasty and not necessarily in that order. And it sure as hell shouldn’t be normal. You want to have a bagel or a granola bar or a stale pretzel you bought from the guy at the top of the subway stairs, go right ahead. But you want to eat chicken wings — and then lick your fingers — you are foul, gross and nasty. You break out the knives and forks to eat and you’re like the girl walking her Mastiff in the middle of the street. You need a law. I’ve disgusted myself so much with this column, I’m taking off for a few weeks. See you in September!

***** The firehouse on Beach 116th Street looks more and more like it’s destined to move to the spot on Beach Channel Drive between Beach 116th and 117th (the old HSBC bank, the old Ram’s Horn and Sunset Diner spot). The Borough Pres recommended the FDNY consider Beach 112th and BCD as the Community Board suggested but that recommendation is hardly binding. The Beach 112th Street location seems a better place than the entrance to the area’s main commercial strip. The two-family house was putting up 22 people some nights. The place had been run by Laura Jones, who gained some infamy a couple years back when she attempted to open a place on Beach 88th Street called “Hostile Hostel” with rooms such as the “Wife Beater Bungalow” and the "Domestic Violence Bungalow." Jones later claimed it was a joke gone bad. ***** National Night Out Against Crime (it’s a daylight thing!) is Tuesday, Aug 1. The 100th Precinct's fun will be held in the parking lot at Beach 94th off Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The 101st will be at O’Donohue Park at Beach 17th and Seagirt. BORO PREZ GREENLIGHTS FIREHOUSE MOVE – AGAINST CB 14 WISHES

By Kevin Boyle Community Board 14 rejected the proposed move. The Queens Borough President approved it. A little background. In June 2016, The Rockaway Times reported that the FDNY was looking to move from its landmarked firehouse on Beach 116th Street because a much-needed renovation was far more costly than a relocation. The firehouse, more than 100 years old and home to Engine 268 and Ladder 137, received landmark status in 2013. Such a designation preserves history but is often at odds with modernization efforts – which is needed at the Beach 116th facility. When updating the firehouse was explored, and renovation
estimates climbed, the FDNY and the City started eyeing a property a few hundred feet north on Beach Channel Drive, between Beach 116th and Beach 117th Street as a new firehouse location. The site, most recently home of an HSBC bank branch and formerly the Sunset Diner, had been vacant since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The building and lot is owned by Jeff Sutton, who according to Forbes magazine is worth $3.4 billion and is among the top 200 richest Americans. The City began doing soil tests and exploring the overall feasibility of the site, apparently without the knowledge of Sutton, whose attorney just recently contacted the Community Board to inquire if the City was

interested in taking possession of the property. (The Rockaway Times had emailed Sutton’s office more than a year ago for comment about the FDNY’s interest. The email got no response). The City has eminent domain rights (it can seize property for the public good) so it is not unusual for the City to start a ULURP (Uniform Land Use Review Procedure) before alerting the owner. A ULURP is a standardized City procedure in which applications affecting the land use of city property would be publicly reviewed. Some of the process includes public hearings, Community Board and Borough President recommendations, and environmental impact studies. In the case of Sutton’s property (116-11 Beach Channel Drive), the ULURP process is well underway. In June 2017, Community Board 14 rejected the proposed move and instead recommended the firehouse be moved four blocks east to approximately Beach 112th Street and Beach Channel Drive, which is an unused lot (west of the ferry parking lot) owned by National Grid. The Community Board sent its recommendation to Melinda Katz, the Queens Borough President. After reviewing CB 14’s recommendation, the BP issued her own recommendation. “The location of firehouses is critical in determining response times and the overall strategy of the Fire Department to provide fire and emergency protection for our neighborhoods and communities. It is also critical when replacing firehouses to ensure continuity and timeliness of service. On the Rockaway Peninsula there is the added challenge of proximity to the waters of Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic Ocean especially during extraordinary weather events.
“Based on the above I hereby recommend approval of this application with the following conditions: “Community Board 14 has expressed concerns about the proposed site and has recommended another for consideration. The Fire Department should evaluate the feasibility of the alternative recommended by the community board.

“The landmarked Beach 116th Street Firehouse has been an iconic part of the community for over 100 years. The Rockaway Peninsula is in need of a cultural and arts center. Beach 116th Street is centrally located and has long been an economic and cultural hub of Rockaway. Adapting the landmarked firehouse for re-use as a cultural and arts center would be a logical repurposing of the building that would serve the entire peninsula.” Katz’s condition that the FDNY “should evaluate” the alternative site is not binding and probably not a particularly attractive option for the FDNY. Such an evaluation would mean starting the ULURP process over, thereby prolonging the effort to find and establish a modern firehouse. In effect, her recommendation is a green light for the FDNY to relocate to the 116th site. In 2016, Jim Long, a spokesman for the FDNY said it could be five years before trucks and engines rolled out of a new facility. Now, perhaps it’s just four years.

Bring your bucket, shovel and creative spark to the beach this weekend. The 2nd Annual Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is this Sunday on Beach 117th Street! On Sunday, July 30, all are welcome to join in on another great Rockaway Times-sponsored event for the whole family. Last year The Rockaway Times resurrected the Rockaway Sandcastle Contest along with the help of the Department of Parks and Recreation and Councilman Eric Ulrich’s office. Last year participants impressed with castles, elephants, flip flops, aloha greetings and even a gargoyle. It was so much fun that we’re doing it again. All ages are welcome to Beach 117th on Sunday to participate in the fun. There will be three different age categories: 8 and Under, 9 to 15, and 16 and up (that means you, adults!) The top three winners in each category will get a first, second or third place tro-

The Rockaway Times reached out to local businesses to help make the contest even better by donating prizes for the winners. Businesses like Lana’s Loft, Uncle Louie G’s of Rockaway Beach, The Fat Cardinal Bakery and Carvel have donated gift certificates. Liz Speer of Life Eclectic Apparel has donated a prize pack including a t-shirt, tote and blanket. Some lucky winners will also receive passes for a whale-watching adventure cruise with American Princess Cruises. There may also be a few Rockaway Times t-shirts
available to runner-ups. However, most participants will receive something just for joining in (as long as supplies last). Participants will receive event medals, plus other fun giveaways like sunglasses. There will also be some buckets and shovels available to those who don’t have their own, courtesy of Councilman Ulrich’s office, and water to keep everyone hydrated, courtesy of the Parks Department. The task is simple. Create anything you want, whether it’s a castle, creature or any other family-friendly piece, using sand, water and sand tools. Participants can work alone, in pairs, or groups, but please keep groups to no more than six people. The contest starts promptly at noon and participants will only have until 2 p.m. to finish their work, so it is important to show up on time. No one will be allowed to enter after 1 p.m. As the contest nears the end, three judges will be coming around to judge each piece on different criteria like creativity, cleanliness,
composition and wow factor! The winners will be announced at around 2:30 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the registration tent on the boardwalk at Beach 117th Street. Even if you pre-register, please stop at the registration tent to check in and pick up your entry number. The Rockaway Sandcastle Contest was a tradition started by West End Realty many years ago. What better way to kick off the first day in August than with the National Night Out Against Crime 2017 celebration with our local officers in blue and the community? Both 100th and 101st Precincts’ Community Councils, serving the Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel, have quite a bevy of fun and yummy, jam-packed activities planned for local adults and children with New York City’s finest next Tuesday, August, 1. This annual event, celebrated across the U.S. and Canada since 1984, aims to build awareness about crime prevention, and strengthen police and community relations. From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the parking lot across from the po-
lice station on Beach 94th Street, the 100th Precinct will host quite an extravaganza with a bouncy house, obstacle course, rock wall, photo booth, live music and free delicious food. Joe Young, 100th Precinct’s Community Council president, encourages everyone to come out and celebrate this robust gathering between local officers and the community. “We want everyone to come out, get to your know your local officers and have fun. Our officers too, have families, and serve us everyday to make our community safe. Priest Shares the Tale of the Ground Zero Cross By Kami-Leigh Agard
On September 23, 2001, 13 days after the catastrophic 9/11 attack that left downtown NYC in shambles both physically and emotionally, Franciscan priest, Father Brian Jordan, first laid his eyes on a 17-foot steel column, weighing at least two tons, showed to him by a construction worker after a Sunday Mass he held with Ground Zero workers. This gigantic T-shaped cross, formed by two interlocked girders, both stupefied and amazed Father Brian, and everyone in attendance, who all stared silently at what appeared to be a sign from above. “I was so overcome with emotion, shock, surprise and gratitude,” Fr. Jordan said. “I imme-
diately knelt down and thanked Almighty God. As we all silently looked from each other to the cross, we did not say a word, but from the reverent silence and penetrating wide-eyed stares, it was obvious that we all knew and accepted that this was a sign of God.” So what took just 13 days to discover, culminated in a 13year uphill battle for this firebrand priest to steadfastly fight for the preservation and memorialization of what became known as the Ground Zero Cross. Continued from Page 12 “let go and let God” after the cross was installed at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in 2014. “I first battled to keep the rusted cross at the Ground Zero site because it was a powerful reminder for the countless construction workers, firemen, police officers and volunteers that God is here with us, and with faith in Him, we will resurrect, not just as a community, but as a country. “Then I fought for it to be placed at the nearby St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, which was severely impacted by 9/11, not just physically, but emotionally. Though suffering structural damage, St. Peter’s kept its doors open to America’s heroes, and the church transformed into a relief supply station. Most of the Ground Zero workers were Irish Catholics who needed that physical and spiritual reminder of the cross at the church,” Fr. Jordan said. The cross was kept at the church from October 2006 to July 2011. Then in a short ceremony that same month, it was blessed by Fr. Jordan before being loaded on a flatbed truck and lowered into the National September 11 Memorial & Museum (due to being a large-scale artifact), before the rest of the museum's displays were filled in. During that time period, Fr. Jordan still fought to reinstall the cross back at St. Peter’s. However, now both the cross and Fr. Jordan had a new nemesis. In July 2011, the nonprofit group, American Atheists, sued to remove it, calling it an unlawful and “repugnant” attempt to promote religion on public land. One group member even told ABC News that it was “an ugly piece of wreckage” that connoted only “horror and death.” American Atheists lost their case in July 2014. A threejudge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court found that the cross, located at Ground Zero, was "a symbol of hope" and historical in nature. “It did
THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017 not intentionally discriminate against a group of atheists who sued to have it removed,” they ruled. Fr. Jordan said that after 13 years of fighting for this cross, he is finally at peace. “I finished this book three years ago, but decided to revisit it after finally coming to peace and accepting the reality that the Ground Zero Cross has a permanent home, though the 9/11 Memorial Museum was not my preference. However, now that the book is published, I want folks of all faiths to see why the cross was and will always be a significant symbol of hope, faith and resurrection for us all after 9/11. “In my estimation, at least one third of those who died that fateful day were from Irish Catholic families from all five boroughs, especially from Rockaway, Breezy Point and Broad Channel. The firemen, police officers, union workers and civil employees who lost their lives that day and during relief efforts were Irish Catholics,” Fr. Jordan said. Fr. Jordan himself comes from a working-class Irish family that goes back three generations visiting and living in Breezy Point. “My father used to come here with my grandparents as early as during the Great Depression. Then when he married and he had his own children, we used to spend all of our summers living in a bungalow in Breezy. “Rockaway will always be my home. I know this community well. I was here for the 9/11 Memorial Mass services on the peninsula, after the Flight 787 crash and of course, Sandy. So I know how strong and resilient Rockaway folks are! Sunday is for the dogs (and cats!). Animal Rock 2017 will be an all-day celebration of furry friends. On Sunday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Beach 94th Street Performance Space, Jill Lauri, MBA, MSW, of Healing With Animals, is hosting an event dedicated to animals and those who love them. According to Lauri, the purpose of Animal Rock 2017 “is to Celebrate Our Relationship With Animals - to acknowledge the important role that they play in our lives. My intention is for people to experience the love that animals feel for us, the joy that they want for us, the road to peace that they offer us, and the respect for all living beings that are here to teach us.”
The event will aim to do that through a series of events and services for pets and humans alike. The event will include an animal memorial service starting at 11 a.m., to honor the animals that have passed over. From 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m., there will be speakers talking about different animal-related topics. Cathy Browne will be discussing feral cats Trap, Neuter and Release programs. Lauri herself will cover the topic of deepening our relationship with animals and healing. Nicole Valenti of the Riverhead Foundation will teach people about proper protocol for helping stranded or injured sea animals. Besides discussions, there will be plenty of activities including animal blessings, animal Reiki or healing massage, and plenty of raffles to help raise money for Animal Care and Control (ACC). Local businesses like Boarders Surf Shop, Burn Fitness, Cuisine By Claudette, Thai Rock, Uncle Louie G, and Zingara Vintage have donated prizes towards the raffle. ACC will also be on hand in the hopes of giving animals a new home. They will be bringing a mobile van full of cats and dogs that will be available for adoption between noon and 4 p.m. Current pet owners are also encouraged to bring their pets for all the activities. Lauri said she was inspired by the idea of Animal Rock from, well, the animals of course. “It was their idea and they inspired me and I ran with it. What I find is when I take my inspiration from
THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017 them, things tend to go very smoothly,” Lauri said. Lauri wasn’t just inspired by her love for animals. She says it was their idea, and as an animal communicator, she would know. For many years, Lauri says she has had a gift of being able to communicate with animals. “I’m an animal communicator and I’ve been working with animals for a long time,” she said. “In communicating with a person's animal, I serve as a translator, facilitating a conversation between them. I start by saying hello to the animal telepathically. In response, he or she tells me about their personality and how they see themselves. This often includes their appearance. The animal may also share about their relationship with their person, what they think about their food, how they are feeling physically or emotionally...I relay this information to their person and we begin a three-way dialogue. Communication with the animal offers the possibil-

ity for healing in both the animal and the person." Lauri says she often uses this gift for counseling and healing purposes, including with those who may have lost an animal. She’s also used more traditional ways of helping people. She moved to Rockaway in 2008. “Once I came here, I never looked back. I knew I was supposed to be here,” she said. However, it wasn’t until after Hurricane Sandy that she knew that she should truly use her gift. “After Sandy, I decided it was time to really claim my voice and speak for the animals and do what I came here to do. Everything had prepared me to do it, but it was just time to let go of any fears I had about doing something that was less traditional. After Sandy, there was a lot of fear and it was really an opportunity for the animals to help heal us,” she said. This realization led Lauri to starting her own practice, Healing With Animals, in which she uses her gift to comfort both animals and
people. On Sunday, Lauri will be spreading the healing power of animals throughout the peninsula. The event is open to anyone who loves animals or those who are simply open to learning more about animals. “From this, I want people to connect to a greater joy in their lives, to build a greater respect, and honor our relationship with animals, and for people to walk away with things that may be able to integrate into their own lives. We’re all in this together. If we don’t honor ourselves and other living beings, then we all lose. Through this event, we can honor all living beings and spread the message of how to continue to do that and take it to an even greater level,” Lauri said. More on Homeopathy Dear Editor: Dr. Galvin’s column on homeopathy teething tablets does not fully explore the topics of safety, composition of homeopathy products, or research in homeopathy. Parents deserve more balanced information to help them evaluate the products for themselves. Dr. Ronald Whitmont, President of the American Institute of Homeopathy, a national medical association, makes the following points in his analysis of the FDA reported cases. http://homeopathy-

Most of the cases had little or no information about the child’s existing health conditions, medications and no analysis of the data that shows causality of adverse effects from the homeopathic products. 2. The FDA did not “make any attempt to evaluate the relative risk from using homeopathic teething products” compared to healthy children. The relative risk of seizures from homeopathic teething tablets is estimated at “1% or less,” far below the 4-10% risk of healthy children. 3. The amounts of Belladonna in the teething tablets were within the area of “ultra-dilutions,” which are far below any pharmacologically active dose. To experience even mild side effects, a child would need to ingest a dozen bottles of teething tablets over a short period of time. 4. The FDA claims do not correlate with the National

Poison Control Center findings, which report no serious adverse effects from accidental ingestions or overdoses of homeopathic teething tablets. 5. The data about the eight (not 10) infant deaths show many other possible co-existing causes. National Park Service has sliced Whit. Chef Whitney Aycock served up his last pies at Slice O’ Whit at Riis Park last weekend. After a series of complaints, the federal park service decided their differences couldn’t be put aside, no matter how good the food is. On Monday, July 24, Aycock posted a photo on social media of the location where he’s been serving up pizza and other delicacies at Riis Park Beach Bazaar over the past two summers. Yet his post marked the end of good vibes at Suite 1 on Bay 9. “As of today, this awesome place is closed! The small, simple-minded fools that oversee this beautiful National Park have deemed us federally offensive. So be it. Happily so. F***em,” the post said. Aycock’s news shocked fans
of the man who has been nicknamed the Pizza Nazi. Many were saddened and outraged to hear that one of their favorite concessionaires would no longer be at Riis Park. The Rockaway Times reached out to Gateway National Recreation Area’s Public Affairs Officer, Daphne Yun, for comment. “There have been numerous complaints about Whit's behavior and actions since he has been at Riis Beach. A Few More Rules Dear Editor: I agree with most of Susan Brady's beach rules, although I might characterize a couple as judgey, but I think she missed one of the top two — Carry in, carry out. In other words, take your garbage out with you. At the very least carry it to the garbage can and place it there, and if the can is full, find another can, or take it home. And if you're feeling very "green," perhaps pick up some garbage from the beach (or the waves) and add it to yours and carry that out too! It beautifies the beach and protects the wildlife. Thanks! On Bike Lanes Dear Editor: The cyclists have no choice but to swerve on the boards, because the bike lanes are filled with people hanging out…and as you said "people gravitate towards the railings.” Perhaps we should look into bike lanes like they have in Long Beach — in the center! damage was done. “His disruptive inconsiderate behavior and continued intentional noncompliance is unacceptable.” Another bullet point referred to a lewd painting that Aycock had on the door of his premises. It said Aycock had removed the painting, but “his poor judgment and imprudent behavior is unbecoming of a park operator.” Lastly, the letter said Aycock didn’t get approval to install a business sign in front of the historic property. Belvy Klein, owner of Riis Park Beach Bazaar, said they fought to keep Aycock as one of their concessionaires. “We have attempted to moderate and work out the differences between the two, but ultimately and unfortunately, we were not successful. Throughout his tenure with us Whit has consistently received raves from press and public alike for producing some of the very best pizza in all of NYC - both the local community and beach goers will definitely miss his food,” Klein said. "At the end of the day,
while we don't applaud this decision, we understand that Riis is a federal park and that we and all of our sub tenants - have to comply with National Park guidelines and regulations. It's really unfortunate that it came to this and I wish that compromises could have been reached, but at this point it's out of our hands." By Tuesday, Aycock had removed the majority of his belongings from the Riis Park premises. Aycock will not be returning to Riis Park in the winter. What’s next for Whit’s pizza is up in the air, but fans of the chef will know where to find his “f***in’ good burger” and other treats at his “chill” spot in Arverne.

ROGERS IRISH PUB, ROCKAWAY'S OLDEST RUNNING BUSINESS - 1919

It was gracefully noticed that in the last few issues of The Rockaway Times, a local business must be “Honored in Rockaway Beach, NY History.” The Hotel Pierce on Fifth Avenue (now Beach 116th Street), in Rockaway Park was built in late 1912 and opened
for the 1913 season in the Rockaways. The black and white postcard is postmarked on June 2, 1913 and many unwanted items such as the spider web of power lines, the overhead trolley power lines, as well as utility and trolley poles were washed out for photo clarity. The trolley tracks to Washington/Memorial Circle on the boulevard (lower left) are also
gone. The color post card is self-explanatory. The multi-story beautiful brick building contained 30 rooms, eight baths and private suites with baths, six bowling alley lanes, a large dining room and heat during the winter months. In 1918, with O. Greissefier as proprietor, the Pierce Hotel sported an orange grove and futurist room (also known as a “character
lounger”), cabaret dancing and souvenirs for the ladies. In May of 1919, the Pierce Hotel was sold to brothers James and Cornelius Rogers, formerly from Kentucky, and renamed “The Rogers Hotel.” The building has changed its face a few times, but locals have no problem identifying the building and the location. For the last 98 years and ‘STILL’ in business, many Rockaway Beach residents and visitors have enjoyed making memories and drinking spirits at Rogers Irish Pub. In two years’ time (2019), Rogers Irish Pub, located on 116th Street, will be celebrating its long waiting and extremely anticipated… ** 100TH ANNIVERSARY ** Make it a Big One!!!

Dear Enchantress…I moved to my new neighborhood three months ago. I want to be involved in the community, I have many interests and I see there is a lot going on. Everyone seems to know each other already. I don't know if it’s a problem of low self-esteem, which seems funny, I'm a grown woman. But my idea of going out has been grocery shopping and smiling at people, I feel friendly, but also needy. I've attended some town type meetings. I've seen other new people move in and overheard them introducing themselves, and boom they are involved and appreciated and have friends and community. I feel left in the dust. Dear Left in the Dust, As an extroverted introvert myself, it seems like I’m a really comfortable, outgoing person, but really I'm awkward and
hiding most of the time. I understand you. It can be daunting to make new friends, you are not alone. It sounds like you are missing a need, which does create neediness. You’re normal, and human. See if you can find yourself “adorable” in your neediness. Next let's talk about how to meet your own need, so it doesn't get projected on to others. Having a strong feeling like "neediness" is a sure block and wedge to attempt something new, for fear of rejection. There is vulnerability in being seen as the "new" person, in a sea of people that already know each other. I will share some ideas on actions to take, but first I recommend asking yourself: has this pattern or storyline happened before? Do you harbor any feelings of being "left out" in the past? Or "not seen?” Patterns will repeat themselves if they are not brought in to your awareness

Top 5 Sites for the DIYer

Many DIYers rely on the internet for their source of information. YouTube videos are great for general reference, but you never know if they are posted by amateurs or people who know what they are talking about. I put together a list of sites that I think are a great resource for DIYers. 1- SupplyHouse.com, for heating or plumbing parts/ supplies they have a great stock. Once you find the part you’re looking for, you can find helpful videos near the bottom of the page. Their videos are done by professionals and are easy to understand. 2- PartsSelect.com, if you’re doing your own appliance re-
pair, this is the site for you. They provide detailed diagrams of most appliances to help you find the right part and most of the parts have installation instructions. Though most of the instructions are posted by customers, they are pretty accurate. Some have videos, others have written instructions. 3- DoItYourself.com, this site has a lot of ads to deal with, but they also have a lot to offer. Even with a lot to offer, they are limited to the basic DIY projects. I would not recommend them for more detailed projects. Most of their topics are covered as text with photos. 4- DIYnetwork.com/how-to, this is a good site for general DIY projects but with less ads than DoItYourself.com. You
will find that they link to other sites, but they are pretty informative. Keep in mind that the sites they link to may not always be professionals. 5- HomeDepot.com & Lowes.com, I grouped these two together because they are very similar to one another. They both have a section for “Ideas & How To.” Their videos are pretty good and informative, but at the same time they are geared towards DIYers with a little knowledge. So do a little additional research after watching their videos. Notes: For this article, I went through more than 100 sites with “How To” videos and/or instructions. A a contractor for over 30 years, these were the top five sites that were both user-friendly and most

Time To Wake Up About Wakes By Bob Leckie, Owner of The Wharf
After spending the last 39 years having Jamaica Bay as my backyard, I consider myself as someone who has had a lot of experience with boat wakes. There are large fishing vessels, tugboats, barges, high-speed ferry services, jet skiers and maybe the worst of the lot, the recreational weekend boaters. My focus these days is the present NYC Ferry, which has contracted Horblower International Corp Vessels to transport passengers from Lower Manhattan and Sunset Park to and from the Rockaways. An obvious boom to the local economy, so much so, that they had to add several fishing vessels from Sheepshead
Bay and most recently, Seastreak to help meet their demand on this popular route and what has become a destination place, Rockaway Beach. Unlike Reynold’s Channel to the east of us, Jamaica Bay is not a “no wake” zone channel. This channel has a Bay Constable and Coast Guard that enforces Maritime Law. Per state and federal law, an operator is responsible for their vessel and any damage or personal injury it may cause. Sometimes the vessel fails to regulate speed, operating at a speed that causes damage from the wake of the vessel. Improper distance is operating a vessel at greater than five miles per hour when operating within 100 feet of a store, a dock or pier, a

raft or float, or an anchored or moored vessel. A moving vessel has an obligation to pass a moored vessel carefully and avoid producing unusual wakes. The moving vessel has a duty to consider the anticipated effects of its speed and motion through the water on vessels moored nearby. It must proceed carefully to avoid creating swells that might cause damage. It must take reasonable precautions to minimize the effects of its wake including a reduction in speed. I believe he has done what he can to communicate to his captains what they need to do to operate the vessels in a safe manner, although not always.
My point of the matter is…what are we going to do? Wait for someone to suffer serious personal injury, damaged property or incur damage to their boats? Lawsuits will be inevitable if Maritime Law isn’t abided by in good conscience. Captains, let’s be conscious of what you have left behind and I’m not talking about your derriere. On July 23, friends and family gathered at Beach 133rd Street for a prayer service commemorating the 40th birthday for the late Christopher Lawler. Chris and his mother Kathy (daughter of Bill and Anne Blum) were victims of the crash of Flight 587, which occurred on November 12, 2001. The service, which was held by the beach wall, was celebrated by Father Jim Cunning-
ham of St. Francis de Sales. It was attended by many of his family and friends who loved him dearly and knew him well as a truly fine and caring young man with a promising future. It was especially poignant as The Blum Family Reunion was held the day before and thus many of his loving family were in attendance and could attest to their love for the person he was and would have become.

Community

The definition of a “community” is typically a group of people who live in the same area and interact with each other. The modern world has extended that definition to include electronic communities such as the social media worlds of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat among others. Within communities there are sub-communities. Here in Rockaway there are many sub-communities. The Rockaway community-at-large extends
from the most eastern tip of the peninsula all the way to the most western tip and is bound by sea and bay. Some of the more prominent communities are the business communities that make up the local merchants that serve us all. Other communities include the various yoga groups, the music community, and the sports communities; of course each school and church has its own communities, too. I think that these communities share many common traits; such as they pro-
vide support to their members. I say, "members," but in most cases there is no formal membership for these communities, people are simply bound to each other by some common cause or activity. But they share a sense of belonging, a sense of camaraderie, and a sense of togetherness that comes with being in a group. The members are caring and supportive, and give positive re-enforcement for forward progress both individually and collectively. I certainly see that within the circles that I move in. I see it on Tuesday nights at Connolly’s when musicians try new material knowing that other musicians are listening. There is a sense of courage for stepping outside the comfort zone, but also a sense that the
community will be supportive, because they understand what it’s like to be out in the deep end of the pool. I see it with the yoga community, as that group looks to deepen their practice, knowing that not everyone is double-jointed, and providing helpful guidance to reach the calmness that yoga brings. When my kids were younger I saw it within the various sports teams here on the peninsula. Not everyone has the talent to be a successful athlete, but that seldom mattered, because the focus was teaching sportsmanship and fostering teamwork, rather than winning at all costs. In mature communities, the sub-groups cross lines all the time. In open communities this cross-pollination can lead to wonderful crea-
tive collaborations. We probably all remember as kids competing with neighboring parishes or teams. Sometimes those rivalries could be heated. But as we grew up, we crossed lines into those neighborhoods, and realized the other guys weren’t so bad after all, and in some cases formed teams across neighborhoods. It would be great if we could be as open all the time and not keep to only the communities that we formed; and close to new members and other groups. That would truly be a world to aspire to, to be open and collaborative. And it’s the type of hope that we sometimes get from great leaders, who remind us that we all belong to the same community: the human race. Let’s celebrate our communities!

FYI on AF
The human heart has four chambers. The upper chambers, known as atria, are shaped like a pyramid. The lower chambers are called ventricles. Each heartbeat is initiated by the sinoatrial node (SA node), which is the heart’s intrinsic pacemaker and is located in the atrium. The electrical impulse generated by the SA node causes the atria to beat first, which pushes blood into the ventricles. The electrical impulse is carried by fibers to the atrioventricular node (AV node) located in the wall separating the upper and lower chambers. The AV node sends the impulse into the ventricles causing them to beat, which then sends blood
into the aorta and pulmonary artery as well as the rest of the body. This electrical activity can be mapped on an EKG. There are many heart disorders that can disrupt this electrical circuit. By far the most common arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm, is atrial fibrillation (AF). AF is caused by an abnormal pacemaker often located just outside of the heart (usually in the pulmonary vein). This abnormal pacemaker sends out electrical pulses, often as fast as 300 beats per minute, which disrupts the functioning of the SA node. Because of this disruption the atria do not beat, or contract, but rather just quiver or fibril-

late. These rapid impulses get through to the AV node, but because they don’t all get through, the ventricle beats at an irregular and often rapid rate. Because in AF the atria quiver and do not contract, blood can pool in its corners (remember the atrium is shaped like a pyramid). This pooled blood can clot and when the clot is dislodged it is sent out into circulation. The most common effect of this clot getting out of the heart is a stroke. Risk factors for AF include hypertension, obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea, alcohol abuse, and congestive heart failure. Because the formation of a clot in the heart can have deleterious effects including a stroke, blood thinners are often prescribed to those with AF. The blood thinners, aka anticoagulants, make clot formation less likely albeit with significant potential side effects like gastrointestinal bleeding. But not everyone with AF is given blood thinners. The decision to give blood thinners is made by assessing a person’s risk of a stroke. The risk-assessment acronym is CHADS-VAS.
CHADS-VAS stands for Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age (75 and older), Diabetes, Stroke or TIA history, Vascular disease, Age (65 to 75), and Sex (female). Age over 75 and history of stroke are given two points each, all the others are one point each. Someone with a score of zero to one will usually be placed on aspirin alone whereas a score of two or over will usually mean full anticoagulation. Smoking and a history of kidney disease are also significant factors that figure in the decision-making process. There is a separate acronym for bleeding risk called HAS-BLED but I won’t get into that today. A high HAS-BLED score (three or higher) will be a factor to consider against blood thinners. If you have AF you should discuss your treatment as it pertains to your risk factors with your doctor to be sure that your treatment is appropriate. Next week I will discuss treatment options for AF. THE POWER OF THE MIND Yesterday morning while guiding a yoga class in a room not quite humidity-free, I found some in front of me struggling while moving through the heat. It wasn’t a heated yoga class, and we never have a cold room, just comfortable. Yesterday morning it was not. It was taking a long time to come to a comfortable temperature. I reminded them to come to the breath to get through the difficulty – physically, mentally, emotionally. Awareness of the act of breathing, to me, the art of breathing, making it deeper, fuller, longer during both the inhales and the exhales mentally diverts the attention from the struggle to a centering place. Emotionally, it is calming. Then, I thought of my Dad. We would say to him in the dead of winter, “Put a hat and gloves on.� He would say, “I tell myself that I’m warm and I’m warm.� Same for being cool. The remembrance of course to me was special because he continues to be present in my life sporadically and in different ways, and when it occurs, it is now a feeling of joy having had those experiences with him. He is no longer here, but continues to live on in this way. The profound lesson from his being warm and cool in freezing weather and humid conditions is that we have the mind strength to derail a potentially hazardous condition by “thinking� it away. Divert the attention from the uncomfortable condition. Divert it to any other condition, just not the one
that is uncomfortable. Before it gets out of hand, i.e., before it gets the better of us. That is, in a way, what we do in the yoga room: we focus. We focus on positive affirmations, centering breath and physical movement, which allows the body’s energy to circulate and revitalize. We don’t get derailed by outside conditions. Our minds guide us to be free in the capacity of being present. When I think about what some people have had to endure, I can only imagine that it has to be the power of their minds that got them through. Strength, ability, energy. Rising up to strength rather than sinking down to instability and weakness. Having an “I can� attitude rather than “I am not able.� “I can� is such a strong affirmation. That takes some power. We’re thinking all of the time. What is the difference? The difference is the affirmation: “I am not going to let this get the better of me in this moment in time.� Some reactions are habitual, so it is essential to give space to stop and think rather than revert to the habitual reaction. The power of the mind. Thoughtful contemplation. What made me think of all of this? A humid room during a yoga class. That in itself is magical. Every experience is a springboard for thought, contemplation, feeling, sharing. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Life With Our “Artistic” Child By Kami-Leigh Agard
The R-Word Question. How many of you have used the word, “retarded” to describe someone? Now, don’t get out of sorts, I’m sure many of us are guilty of this. I am not necessarily the most politically correct (PC) individual, in fact I just learned that it is not PC to say, “My autistic child,” the PC verbiage is, “My child with autism.” Or instead of saying “That midget actor,” the PC description is “The actor with dwarfism.” Personally, I think that it is all a spot extra, but such is the world we live in. However, I do cringe, when people say the word, “retarded,” especially when talking about people with autism or any other disability. I have been in many social settings where in conversation, someone would remark, “It must be hard for you, to have a retarded child,” or better yet, “She’s so beautiful and athletic, too bad she is retarded.” I would just give a brave face and smile saying, “She is not retarded, she has autism.” Then the individual with a red face would awkwardly blurt out, “Sorry, I didn’t mean, she IS retarded, she’s just not well…normal.” Hmmm…I think she is pretty damn normal, especially when I would observe their children glued to their smartphones, obsessing over Kardashian celebrity, Kylie Jenner ’s latest Snapchat post.
I also don’t like the word, “special.” My daughter, Soanirina, is not “special” because she has autism, she is “special,” because she is my beautiful, giggly, amazon-like daughter. My daughter ’s dad and I recently went to visit a private school in the city that caters to children with autism and other neurodevelopment delays. Her nutty professor dad insisted that we take her along, though I kept objecting, because most school tours usually bar children. Sure enough, we were told that she was not allowed. So for the next hour, Soanirina and I sat in the lobby waiting for her dad, who went on the tour. I obser ved the children flitting in out of the area, and folks, I saw for myself the spectrum of autism. One child communicated by pressing phrases on his iPad, another child, very verbal, clinically drew his map home on the white board, insisting his was the most efficient route. One little girl, my daughter ’s age, with some verbal capability, commenced to describe every species of fish in the aquarium in the lobby. I wondered to myself, why would people describe these amazing beings as retarded? And you know who I was most impressed with? My daughter! For an entire hour, she sat patiently observing the fish and the
overall environment. As each minute ticked by, I prayed that she would not get up and start bolting for the door. I am a so-called “neurotypical” adult, and I was losing my marbles. Then I announced to Soa, “Daddy should be here soon, five more minutes.” Then the receptionist remarked, “Sorry guys, the tour is actually two hours. Totally peeved, but laughing, I said, “Okay Soa, we’re leaving. Let’s take the iron horse home.” My pooh was an awesome trooper. Now folks, how many “normal” children could have sur vived this long day? Instead of saying, “retarded,” or “special,” please refer to individuals with autism as super human! This antiquated saying still carries weight with all of us, touched by special-needs or not. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.” Folks, they do.

News of the Mayor's visit had been kept on the down low, which was probably a good thing since he ultimately canceled but although the west side streets were conspicuously void of residents, a rather large crowd of officious looking individuals replete with hard hats, clipboards and cell phone cameras held high in the air moved up and down the streets with the Deputy Mayor, not unlike a large school of fish. Continued from Page 35 the same thoughtless Mayor who, as the citizens of New York were reeling from the execution-style killing of police officer and mother of three, Miosotis Familia, quietly skipped town flying to Hamburg, Germany to join with other progressive activists in protesting against the recent G-20 summit in that city with a side trip to visit with his son who is spending the summer at an internship in Berlin. When asked about the timing of his trip, De Blasio and his minions channeled Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing as they lamented that this was a great deal of fuss over nothing of great importance reminding everyone that, after all, the Mayor was back in time to attend Officer Familia's funeral. Also, as I remember it, this is the same imperious Mayor who arrived embarrassingly late for the November 2014 Flight 587 Memorial on Beach 116th Street and then left the event without so much as a simple apology to the assembled crowd. When asked by the media about his lateness a few days
THURSDAY, JULY 27, 2017 after the Flight 587 memorial, rather than apologizing and attempting to place this embarrassing matter behind him, Mayor Bill took the course of a true politician — never retreat...never retract...never admit a mistake — and simply dismissed the issue of his constant tardiness as "inside baseball." Really? The Mayor would be well-served to heed the sage advice of the publisher of The Rockaway Times, Mr. Kevin Boyle, who cautioned at that time that "You gotta be careful using inside baseball stuff because if you go too inside, you'll be the only one there." Fast forward two years and Bill de Blasio's continued lack of common sense, skewed progressive ambitions and ensuing insensitivity to those he (supposedly) serves can only lend credence to the opinion among the folks that our career civil servant Mayor is quite comfortable believing that his time, agendas and priorities are more valuable than ours. Friday remained a busy day as later that afternoon I started receiving several frantic phone calls from neighbors wanting to know why there were multiple trucks towing cars from along Cross
Bay Boulevard. As it turned out, Friday was "Dawn's Fun Run," a 3-mile run/walk/ shamrock shuffle in memory of Dawn McIntyre. The event was well advertised with flyers throughout the town as well as all over social media and "No Parking" signs were prominently posted along the route of the race. On the day of the event, the Vollies cruised along the boulevard with a public address system asking residents to move their cars as well. Unfortunately, there were still a few individuals who went unaware of this event and their vehicles were ultimately relocated to a parking area, which did not interfere with the race. On a happier note, effective November 11, 2017 (Veterans Day), all honorably discharged veterans, no matter their branch of service, will be eligible to shop tax-free online at the various military exchange websites with the same discounts they enjoyed on base while on active military duty. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) is the retailer on U.S. Army and Air Force installations worldwide. A Post Exchange or "PX" is a department style store somewhat similar to a Wal-Mart where

This change in Defense Department policy will open up online exchange shopping privileges to almost 20 million more people. Keep in mind that it won’t apply to shopping at brick-and-mortar, on base, exchange stores and that opening commissary shopping privileges to honorably discharged veterans isn't included in this new benefit. The commissary can best be described as the grocery store on the post. Unlike Post Exchanges, the Defense Commissary Agency relies on a $1.4 billion annual taxpayer subsidy to operate. Because goods there are sold at cost plus a 5 percent surcharge, increasing the customer base to all veterans would result in higher taxpayer costs under the current operating system. Some 160 family members got together at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club after attending a Mass offiiated by longtime friend, Monsignor John Bracken. Female Power to Flow at the Surf Film Festival By Lori Franco
The surfers are taking a break from the waves to head to the big screen. Head to the Rockaway Beach Surf Club (302 Beach 87th Street) this weekend for a two-day film festival dedicated to women surfers. The 5th annual NY Women’s Surf Film Festival 2017 presented by Luna Bar & Lava Girl Surf is July 28 and 29. The NY Women’s Surf Film Festival takes place each year to raise awareness of the “subculture and the local businesses that support them.” They hope to show viewers the special connection that women surfers have through their mutual love for the ocean and the expressive energy that shines when they celebrate their thrill stories. This annual event is sponsored by sponsored by Don Julio Tequila, Bullet Bourbon, Rockaway Beach Surf Club, The Montauk Beach House, Natures Shapes & Tora Surfboards, which will have giveaways and raffles throughout the weekend. On Friday, July
28, the film festival will kick off with the opening reception of a photography series called “seaBeing.” From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., visitors can check out the work by Sarah Lee who is a surf photographer from Hawaii. During those hours there will also be a meet & greet with the filmmakers and surfers of the films that night. That will give guests time to talk and ask questions about the films before watching them! The films will start playing at 9 p.m. and end around 10:15 p.m. Only four films will be shown on Friday. From The RBA: Got Beacons? By Theo Boguszewski
The Rockaway Business Alliance was recently awarded the Neighborhood Challenge Grant, a competitive city grant that tasks business organizations to use technology to solve a community issue. Because of its unique geography, Rockaway juggles an array of disparate elements: east, west, visitors, residents, business corridors and the beach. With this grant, the Rockaway Business Alliance will tackle Rockaway’s issues with connectivity, connecting some of the dots between people and places. We want to help businesses connect to their largest market: the influx of seasonal visitors coming to the beach. We also hope to help connect Rockaway residents to businesses, events and resources. Well, how are we planning to do this? Enter: Connecthings. Connecthings is an international company which deploys networks of contactless technology in public spaces, turning passive, urban assets into smart, connected inter-
action points, which communicate with smartphones. They use public physical objects to connect people to the resources they need. Although many New Yorkers view our great city as one of the capitals of the world, we fall short of many other major cities technologically speaking. Beacons have become a norm in 60 major cities, including Paris, Barcelona, Strasbourg and Madrid. We are excited that the Rockaway community will pilot beacon technology in New York City! What are beacons? The beacons themselves are “dumb objects.” They are plastic, shaped like hockey pucks, and incredibly durable. They can be programmed to relay important information. So where will the beacons go? The beacons will be strategically placed around the peninsula to target areas of high foot traffic. Some of the beacons will be placed on public property, and some will be placed inside RBA businesses. How do the beacons work?

Beacon technology provides a “gentle push” to passersby, helping them connect to resources in a non-intrusive way. The notifications aren’t push notifications; you will only see their messages when looking at your notifications. Beacon technology only captures user counts and doesn’t take in any specific information, so all users' privacy is maintained. Any application can become “beacon-enabled,” thus allowing the app to send notifications to app users as they pass by. For example, if “The Weather Channel” app was beacon-enabled, it could send you a notification about an upcoming storm when you were in range of a beacon. This app-integration platform allows for the potential to incorporate many other tech partners in the future. How can I connect with the beacons? The beacons also work without the integration of an app, through something called “the physical web.” The "physical web" works through the Chrome App, using
physical space to promote digital content. If you have the Chrome App on your phone (all Androids and about 50 percent of iPhones have it), all you need to do is turn on bluetooth and you can receive notifications from the beacons. How beacon technology helps us achieve our goals for the Rockaways: The Rockaway Business Alliance, its businesses, and future collaborators can announce district news and events, advertise local points of interest (shops, unique cultural institutions), and promote useful local apps, among other things. We can tailor this content to the location of the beacon. It is the RBA’s goal to make this shared information as relevant as possible to residents and visitors alike. Family Fun Run is Friday The 14th Annual Graybeards Family Run is tomorrow evening Friday, July 28 at St. Francis de Sales. This year's event is special, honoring the memory of Eileen M. Summer Classic Rolls On The Summer Classic continues to roll on with very few cancellations due to rain. Those basketball games have been rescheduled. Please check with your coach. One of the most important functions of the Summer Classic is its role as a center of parish life at St. Francis de Sales with multiple generations coming out to enjoy the action. That generational aspect is a major reason for its success over 33 years. Summer Classic founder, Flip Mullen, and his family, enjoy the distinction (along with the Ostranders) of having three generations of players come through for the Summer Classic and now gets to enjoy watching his grandchildren play. Former Director Steve Stathis took a different tack
on the generation situation by starting the Graybeards division, which then grew into the Graybeards organization. This expanded the age range of participants originally to the over 40 set and now over 60 as we await our first Summer Classic Septuagenarian. Kenny Whelan has now supervised multiple generations of referees, including now his nephew John, as he has assigned officials for many years
along with his brother Ronald, and Jimmy Quinn. Getting back to the action, the Graybeard championships will be tonight, July 27, at St. Camillus where a full house is expected to witness. The Men's Open division begins playoffs next Thursday with undefeated Buckley's leading the pack. Playoffs for the other divisions are later in August but among the leaders in the various divisions
are Flynn and Flynn, and The Great American NYC both 4-1 in Boys High School play. Advanced Security Analysts are close behind at 3-1. ServPro of Northwest Brooklyn heads up Boys Grammar Senior at 4-1. Storage Place and Kennedy's are 3-1. Three weeks remain before the season comes to an end so come to the center of St. Francis and Belle Harbor to the St. Francis Summer Classic.

Mother nature played nice and held off the rain as we had some great games played this past weekend. At 9:30 a.m. on Field 1 the Mudsharks locked up a playoff spot as they swept the shorthanded Misfits, 4-0 and 11-4. With the two losses, the Misfits dropped from 2nd down to 4th. Field 2 had Morning Wood beat up on the Orioles, 13-1 and 11-3. A big bet was on the line on Field 3 and Pete Torres cannot play the rest of the year as Old Head lost both to The Army, 6-5 and 15-5. Our “Game of the Week” was a battle and a half as both games went to extra innings. The Kings won 9-8 and then the Moneyballs won 3-2. The Knights of Columbus kept their hot streak going as they swept the Chuggernauts. Then the Member Berries swept the No-Shows, 11-6 and 8-2. The three teams in the West are set for the playoffs as the Moneyballs, Kings and Mudsharks clinched. As for the East, Morning Wood, KOC, The Army and Misfits are battling
for the top three spots. With only two weeks left, this is what we have on the schedule for this Sunday, July 30. 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Orioles vs Chuggernauts - 1-13 vs 2-12, the battle of last place. This matchup is for bragging rights on who isn't the worst team in the league. PREDICTION: Split. 9:30 a.m. Field 2, Morning Wood vs Kings - The Kings clinched a spot in the postseason and Morning Wood is trying to clinch 1st place. Kings still have a shot at 1st place as well. The trash talking might be at an all-time high with this matchup as we should see two good games. PREDICTION: Morning Wood Sweep. 9:30 a.m. Field 3, Member Berries vs Mudsharks - Mudsharks are hot as they won their last six games. Member Berries are out of the playoffs but are fighting to finish over .500 in their first season in the league. The Sharks still have a shot at 1st place
