Fred Marino went to Utah to relax and was spotted rocking a Rockaway Times t-shirt. But the thing about Fred? He doesn’t like to relax, he likes to work! He tried selling ads for The Rockaway Times in Utah but he missed his Rockaway customers so much he hurried back. And now he’s planning to celebrate his 83rd birthday on August 2 (That’s right, 83!) by making some door-to-door sales calls. What do you figure, Fred? Seven more years ‘til retirement? Happy Birthday, young man!

SWIMMER TESS HOWLEY BEATS OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST TIME
Tess Howley (center) at Nationals with fellow LIAC swimmers.
Long Island Aquatic Club swimmer and Rockaway resident Tess Howley continues to make a splash in the world of swimming. Her latest accomplishment? Beating a time set by Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman at the same age. Howley is currently participating in the 2022 U.S. National Championships in Irvine, California. Ac-
cording to SwimSwam.com, on the morning of Tuesday, July 26, Howley swam a 2:08.98 in the 200 meter butterfly, becoming the 12th fastest 17-18 year old 200 butterflier of all time. The swim was a personal record for Howley, as her last fastest was a 2:09.20 in the Senior Long Course Championships two weeks prior. But then she beat that time. Later that day, in the finals of the women’s 200 butterfly Howley pulled out a 2:08.07, putting her third, behind Dakota Luther and Lindsay Looney. But the time passed Luther’s previous #6-ranked time of 2:08.09, making Howley the sixth fastest 17-18 year old 200m butterflier of all time. Howley dreams of making it to the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024. In the meantime, she’ll be heading to the University of Virginia this fall, where she’ll continue to swim for the school. Rockaway will be rooting her along, every stroke of the way.
An Unexpected Catch
It was an unexpected catch. Just after The Rockaway Times shared a video of what was believed to be a spinner shark jumping out of the
water, a reader sent us a photo of a six-foot shark, also believed to be a spinner, caught by his neighbor the day after. Hack of HacksWax organic surf wax, took the photo of the shark in his neighbor’s boat at Marina 59. He says his neighbor was trying to catch striper among a big school of bunker off of Rockaway when he hooked this shark instead. The fisherman estimates there is 60 pounds of meat and told Hack he intended on eating it. Recreational shark fishing is legal in New York with proper permitting. Sharks like spinners and blacktips 54 inches and over are permitted to be caught in local waters (one per boat). Certain shark species, including great whites, are prohibited from being fished. For more information about shark fishing, refer to the NYCDEC website.

Amato Appointed to Commission LIPA FUTURE AT STAKE
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato has been appointed to the new legislative commission to analyze and decide the future of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), which encompasses PSEG, the known provider of electrical power to the Rockaway Peninsula. Amato was appointed by the Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Carl Heastie, to be a deciding player in the future of LIPA. This Commission is heavily coveted due to its firm potential to dictate the future of electrical power in a major area of New York State. The Commission will be able to investigate and craft potential reforms that LIPA, and it’s subsidies like PSEG, would respond to in the areas of trans-
parency, overall operations, electrical rates, storm response and many other areas in an effort to create needed change. “We have high rates, inexcusable delays and a lack of transparency with our electric company. This Commission has the impact to restructure the current standards and allow us to shift towards the potential of a public power authority,” Amato said. “My priority is to decrease the cost to the ratepayers of Queens and make a lasting impact for our community.” The Commission is expected to begin its work shortly with public hearings and input from those serviced by LIPA. “The Rockaway Peninsula has a seat at the table, and I hope all of you will join me in pulling up a chair,” Amato said.

***** So, we posted a video of a spinner shark or blacktip (at least that’s what the consensus was from shark aficionados) and the video and story about beach closing went viral and was even picked up by papers in the U.K. The Daily Mirror headline blared: Incredible moment SHARK leaps out of the sea and spins off Queens! Just a few days later the Daily Telegraph amped it up a bit: The US is in the grip of a shark panic amid a sharp rise in attacks and sightings…. beaches were closed after a video shared by the Rockaway Times showed a purported great white leaping through the air a few meters from shore. (A great white?!! Huh? Also, not sure we have the power to shut down beaches, but we do
THURSDAY, July 28, 2022 have a big Facebook following!) ***** Yes, sharks have always been here. We got a big kick out of this report in The Brooklyn Eagle printed in 1934:….”Bernard Levinson of 141-10 Cronston Ave… spotted a shark in the surf near his home a few days ago. The scavenger was barely ten feet from the shore and the outlines of his body could be seen clearly. Before a policeman could take a shot at it, the shark headed out to sea.” ***** The waters around Rockaway are cleaner than they have been in decades. A local who used to be a lifeguard– way back¬ when– reminds us that you often couldn’t see your hands in the water (never mind your feet) and sometimes you’d come out with a brownish film all over your skin. Well, The Clean Water Act from the 1970s and other measures helped transform the ocean and bay. Now, more fish, more bait, more dolphins, and more sharks are enjoying (well, may-
be the bait for a short time) the clean water. ***** AmpSurf's next adaptive surf clinic will be held on Saturday, August 6 at Beach 67th Street from 8:30 a.m.- 12 noon. A Different Kind of Rescue By Katie McFadden
New York City Lifeguards keep our city’s beaches safe all summer. But the job isn’t just about pulling people out of the water when they need help. Sometimes they’re there for those who need a little help getting in. For at least seven years, NYC Lifeguard Brian Gillen of 117 Shack has been the helping hand that 91-year-old Carol Rappaport needs. It’s not every day that the Fresh Meadows resident can get down to the beach. But when she can, with the help of one of her daughters and her aide, Elsie McBean, she makes sure Gillen is going to be there. That was the case when she made her second trip down to the beach this summer on Wednesday, July 27, and Gillen awaited her arrival on Beach 117th. Gillen says for about 30 years, Rappaport has been coming down to his beach. “She’s been coming here for probably as long as I’ve been a lifeguard, since I was a kid. She used to drive and would park on 119th and walk to 117th and we’d chat about the water. This has been going on for years. Eventually it got to a point where she wasn’t comfortable getting in the water, and she’d say, ‘Can you help me get in, and then I’ll wave, and you can me get out?’ So that’s what me and Mike Geraghty did for about five or six years. She’s a strong swimmer and she’d swim half a mile or so and come back and wave and we’d help her get out. But as time progressed, she started coming down with her daughter or granddaughter as she couldn’t drive anymore and was having more difficulty walking,” Gillen explained. “Her daughter and granddaughter were always surprised that we knew her name. I told them I’ve known Carol for years, we help her get in the water. Now we’re at a point where it’s just a few times a summer, so this is the second time she’s coming down. Sometimes she comes in a wheelchair with her daughter and nurse, and I help get her in the water. I stand in front of her
and walk her to the shoreline and I’ll let all the waves break over my back as she holds on to me and I get her out past the breaking waves, and same thing getting her out. She loves it.” As Carol arrived on Wednesday afternoon, she happily greeted Gillen, as her daughter, Esther Gluck, warned her she could only spend about 25 minutes in the water. “She’s used to being on the beach the whole day. My grandmother lived on Beach 123rd Street and we used to come here every summer,” Gluck explained. And those beach trips never stopped, even after Carol’s mother passed away. “She lives in Fresh Meadows. She’s been asking to come to the beach here for about a month and a half now, since Brian went on duty Memorial Day weekend. He’s really wonderful, he’s a righteous person. He’s been helping her since she stopped being able to get out into the water on her own about seven years ago,” Gluck said. As she sat in her beach chair, readying for her time in the ocean, Rappaport, who turned 91 in March, continued to sing Gillen’s praises. “I look forward to coming here all year and when Brian is here, I come. He’s wonderful. He’s so caring and holds on to me and takes me into the water and out of the water and once he sees I can
swim on my own, he lets me go,” she said. “But I don’t know if I can go today by myself.” On this particular beautiful afternoon, while his partners kept a close watch on other beachgoers, Gillen held on to Rappaport every step of the way. Down to the shoreline, past the breaking waves, and even as she took a few strokes on the deep water, before he assisted her on their way back in, 25 minutes later. Asked about her swim, with a big smile, Rappaport said, “I loved it. It was so special. The ocean is very refreshing, and I love to swim. It’s wonderful to be here. We’re surrounded by people that all love the beach and I love the beach and I’m so happy when I get in the water,” she said. But if it were not for Gillen taking time during his shift to give Rappaport a helping hand, her time in the water wouldn’t be possible. “If not for him, I couldn’t come here. It’s a great, big, good deed what he does helping me and I’m so appreciative. I love Brian.” For Gillen, helping his senior friend continue to enjoy the water is just another part of the job. “I’m a civil servant. I come here to serve and not be served. We’re not here to be a bigshot sitting on the throne. We’re guardians of the Atlantic, not a king of the Atlantic. I just love to do it,” he said. “I’ve
known Carol for 30 years, she’s like an aunt. It’s my pleasure to be able to help her out. She has such an affinity for the water and so do I. She tells me this is the highlight of her year and things like that puts things in perspective in this job. It’s easy to get hung up on the long days but this is a good thing. Even when we rescue someone, it reminds you we’re dealing with life and death situations, but when you do something like this, it reminds you that it’s all about helping someone. People need help, whether they’re drowning, trying to dig in an umbrella or they’re an older person needing help getting in the water. We’re here to assist. We’re civil servants and we serve in the best way we can.” It’s also rewarding. “I feel good about it. I don’t get paid anything extra, but it feels good to help people,” Gillen said. “It’s the same thing when you find a lost kid and return them to their mother. You get the joy of helping someone. The passion of rescue is one of the highest dimensions of the human soul.” Asked if she’ll bring Carol out for another swim later this summer, Gluck said, “Possibly. But only if Brian is here.” For more information on becoming a New York City lifeguard next summer, see: www.nycgovparks. org/opportunities/jobs/lifeguards

Cheers for Jean Dear Editor: I’ve just thoroughly enjoyed another beautifully written ode to nostalgia by Jean Caligiuri McKenna (“In the Good Old Summertime,” July 14, 2022). The opening and closing paragraphs, alone, are gems. The warmth of treasured memories is gifted to us in elegant phras-
Page 11
THURSDAY, July 28, 2022 ing, and I don’t think that she can write a bad sentence. Each article not only conveys her personal sentiments but also, not far beneath the surface, some valuable social history. It might be a worthy project someday to collect the articles in a book dedicated to Rockaway nostalgia from a time and place fast disappearing from the public’s view. A generational hand-medown, maybe. Anyway, I encourage Jean Caliguiri McKenna to keep writing, at the very least to keep the spirit of those postwar mid-century years alive. Kevin Anthony Reilly
Reminiscing Dear Editor: In regards to the beautifully written recent piece, In The Good Old Summertime, writer Jean Caligiuri McKenna truly captured the essence of teenage life in post-war Rockaway.
Through the selfless sharing of her own personal experiences and touching stylings, the reader is transported to a time of summer fun and first crushes which likely still hold a place in the hearts of every girl still residing in Rockaway. And I’m sure the boys remember those girls well! For the rest of us, it is a wonderful trip back to the simplicity and innocence of summertimes
that are so highly needed today. While the setting and places may be different for many, the summertime experiences of our teen years are very much relatable, and it is refreshing that writings such as this are provided an outlet for all to enjoy and reminisce. Thank you for publishing such a wonderful piece and looking forward to the next! Reminiscing From Long Island

Former Fire Chief Releases Sandy Book Ahead of 10th Anniversary By Katie McFadden
As we approach the tenth anniversary of Hurricane Sandy wreaking havoc across the Rockaway peninsula, the community has come a long way. But for many, the events of that night and the aftermath remain fresh. But those who lived through those moments won’t be here to tell those stories forever. So some choose to put them down in writing. In his first ever book, “Flood, Fire and a Superstorm,” Martin “Marty” Ingram does just that. Many may know Breezy Point resident Marty Ingram as former Chief of the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department. He happened to be chief during one of the local volunteer fire department’s most harrowing nights on the job. On the night of October 29, 2012, Ingram was chief of Point Breeze as they faced an unfathomable task of trying to help neighbors while floodwaters filled the community and 135 of their neighbor’s homes went up in flames. Bits and pieces of the story were told in local and worldwide interviews with those on the scene in the weeks after Sandy. And fellow firefighters even told their version of events, like Sebastian Danese, a Point Breeze firefighter who published, “The Battle for Breezy Point” in 2014. He’s someone Ingram turned to for guidance when he decided it was time to put his own experience into writing about three years ago. But Ingram’s main motivation came from a personal place. “I wrote it because of my grandkids. When they were little, I would tell them bedtime stories of what happened and as they got older, they realized they were hearing firsthand history and said, ‘Pop Pop, you gotta write a book,’ and because of them, I did,” Ingram said. But “Flood, Fire and a Superstorm” is also a book that Ingram hopes can be useful to others who may go through a life changing storm, and may inspire others to join their local volunteer fire department. “I hope it targets several groups. It’s about the lessons
we learned. It could be considered a guidebook for someone in a disaster preparedness course,” he said. But it’s a guidebook written on the personal experiences of that night and the way Ingram used his own life experience to get through it and weeks after, as well as the ways the peninsula’s volunteer firehouses came together to do what they could under unprecedented circumstances. Nothing could have prepared Ingram and the peninsula’s volunteer firehouses for what would happen that night, but Ingram did reflect on some of his experience in his decision making on October 29, 2012 and in the weeks following. Ingram is a retired United States Air Force (USAF) air rescue helicopter pilot and emergency planning officer (EPLO). He retired as a Command Pilot and as a Lieutenant Colonel, and he picked up several awards along the way. In 2000, he was selected as the USAF Emergency Planning Officer of the Year. He also had a career as an Air Carrier Safety Specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration. It was a good resume to have going into Superstorm Sandy as chief of Breezy’s fire department. “Normally a guy does not become a chief of a volunteer fire department at age 60, but I was there and in the book, I explain my background that put me in
that position. I had dealt with a lot of floods, fires and storms but who would have ever thought you’d have a disaster with all three at the same time?” Ingram says it helped that there were some miracles that happened along the way. “There is a spiritual aspect to this book. The more I put my thoughts on paper, the more I realized that story needed to be told,” he said. “The first chapter opens in the Breezy Point Clubhouse, where we were trapped in the building. We had about 40 survivors and 15 firemen and a couple from the Rockaway Point Fire Department, and they had boats and rode in people. I grouped them into a huddle and kept them in form so they wouldn’t panic, and we could focus on what needed to be done. I used to be a swim coach at Nazareth High School and we would have a King huddle and say a prayer in hopes we would win, so that night we had what I called prayer huddles and we said the Our Father. There were miracles that night that shouldn’t have happened,” Ingram said. A major one being that nobody from Breezy Point died that night. Another he mentioned was a point after a friend, Steve, took over the prayer huddle and instead recited the Hail Mary. At that point, the wind had changed, sending the plume of smoke from Breezy’s burning homes, toward the clubhouse, requiring the occupants to evacuate. They tried the firehouse next door to see if the fire engines would work. But with five feet of water outside, hope was minimal. “We had no other plan. We were trapped. But the engines came to life. That was a miracle from the Hail Mary. This was more than a coincidence,” Ingram shared. In what might have been a coincidence, Ingram says what helped the peninsula in the aftermath of the storm was good leadership. In addition to the night of the storm, Ingram’s book goes into the story of the recovery and some of the key players that helped make it possible. “When I look back, I see phenomenal leadership in
key positions in advance of the storm. The first I think of is Phil Goldfeder, this vibrant, engaged assemblyman who was at the firehouse by 4 in the afternoon after the storm. Then there’s John Cori, Eddy Pastore, Danny Ruscillo, Dolores Orr, among the 52 members of the community board and each one of them spearheaded more meetings after the storm and really helped get the ball rolling. Down in Breezy we had Joe Lynch as chairman of the board and then AJ Smith and people who set up pages online to get communications going,” Ingram said. “A lot of good things came out of a bad situation. I was afraid the Rockaway renaissance was going to stop, and people were going to walk away from Breezy Point, but they didn’t. Everyone on the peninsula should pat themselves on the back for how far we’ve come.” Ingram says he hit a point of writer’s block during the writing process, which explains the delay, but in the end, it’s fitting that “Flood, Fire and a Superstorm” comes out a few months ahead of the tenth anniversary of the storm that changed everything. Ingram’s book is available to order online on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and may be available in local stores. He also plans on holding book signing events where he’ll have copies on hand.

From Dr. Herron to Pop Pop To Principal By Katie McFadden
For more than 42 years, he’s been known as Mr. and then Dr. Herron. To a select few in Rockaway, he’s known as Pop Pop, especially to his grandkids. But many will soon start calling him by a new name—Principal. On July 1, longtime Fontbonne educator and Campus Minister Fred Herron was named Interim Principal of Fontbonne Hall, the all-girls Catholic high school in Brooklyn. Dr. Herron has been part of the Fontbonne family since 1978. And education has been central to his life, both as an educator and a student himself, with several advanced degrees. It all stemmed from his own high school experience. “I loved my high school. I went to Cathedral Prep in Brooklyn. It was a tremendous experience of not only being with friends but being with terrific teachers. I loved every minute of it,” he said. Herron went on to Catholic University and was supposed to go to Europe for graduate school, but after the program was delayed and he was soon to be married, he instead found himself applying for a teaching job at Fontbonne. “I said to my soon-to-be wife ‘I think this is what I really want to do,’ and I never turned around,” he said. And Dr. Herron never stopped learning himself. He started with a Master’s in Theology at Catholic University, then a Master’s in School Counseling at St. John’s University, followed by a Master’s in Education Administration at Boston College, before finally going for his Doctorate in Theology at Fordham. “I realized that I had been in schools in some way shape or form from kindergarten to about age 60, at which point I said, it’s probably time to stop. You gotta graduate sometime sooner or later,” he said. However, while advancing his own education, Dr. Herron never stopped working, “Along the way I was teaching religion at Fontbonne, but I worked for about 12 years as Director of Religious Edu-

cation for the U.S. Coast Guard. After that, I was Director for the Jesuit Retreat House in Staten Island, Mount Manresa from 2009 to 2019 when it closed. I was also going to Ossining five days a week as director of the Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center,” he said. Meanwhile, at Fontbonne, Herron eventually became Chairperson of the school’s entire Religious Studies Department, and even found time to return to St. John’s University, as an adjunct professor for the Department of Theology and Religious Studies. And in between that, he found time to write six books on Catholic education and spirituality. After working for so long, Herron decided to take a sabbatical and dedicate some time to some other youth—his grandkids. In recent years, the father of five graduated to grandpa. “Right at the beginning of Covid, I realized we had two new grandchildren and at that point, four others, and my wife and I were figuring how we could be helpful as grandparents, as our kids were all working,” he said. It was also a time Dr. Herron, a Staten Island resident, found

himself spending more time in Rockaway, a community where many of his former students lived, a community where he helped run a summer program for nine years at Stella Maris, and a place where one of his children had just moved to. “Right around this time, my daughter married and moved to Belle Harbor, on a big Fontbonne block. They had just had their second baby when Covid hit so my daughter, Maryellen Quinn was working from home and her husband, Danny, was teaching at Archbishop Molloy,” he said. When he started coming to Rockaway, he suddenly became more than just Dr. Herron. “It was a blast for me because I was no longer anything else but Pop Pop. And my grandson, Owen, this kid knows everybody. We went out a few weeks ago to 129th and 10 people said hello to him and they just assumed I was Pop Pop. We went for long walks from Fort Tilden to Beach 100th and back,” he said. “I was joking with my son-in-law Danny, saying, how many years do I have to walk this carriage here before I’m no longer a DFD? There are Rockaway girls in Fontbonne now who just know me as Owen’s Pop Pop,” he said. Now those girls are getting to know Owen’s Pop Pop as Principal Herron. “When the article appeared in the Rockaway Times announcing that I was becoming interim principal of Fontbonne, Danny told me ‘I think you might’ve made it past DFD’,” Dr. Herron said. While Pop Pop duty was of the utmost importance, in June, Dr. Herron found that his Fontbonne family was also in need of some help. “They needed a principal and I said I would be glad to help them find someone,” Herron said. But Fontbonne’s faculty had other ideas. After 42 years of working at the school, who better to lead Fontbonne forward than Dr. Herron? “I gather people on the faculty had mentioned my name as someone they
might like to come back and before you know it, two days later it was signed, sealed and delivered. My wife and I were out celebrating our wedding anniversary and I got the call and suddenly life was going to change,” Dr. Herron said. On July 1, Dr. Herron started as interim principal of Fontbonne Hall. “I’m three weeks in and I feel like I’ve been back forever,” Dr. Herron said. As far as Fontbonne’s history goes, his connection goes back forever. “My mother-in-law was in the first class that started here. My daughter went to school here. When I walk around the peninsula, everywhere I go there are young women and now older women that I taught here. Fontbonne is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year and I’ve been in this school for a little more than half of those 85 years, which is pretty daunting, but I'm very lucky,” he said. And becoming principal presents a whole new challenge. “My first day, I walked in and said, what does a principal do? One thing I know is you never wanted to get called to the principal’s office but as principal, you have your hand in every part of the school. Every day is a new day, and every moment is interesting, and I love our teachers here,” he said. Dr. Herron has a few goals in his new role. “We’re coming out of this Covid world, and I think it’s been very hard on students, teachers and families, so we have this opportunity to welcome people back and this is a great year to figure out how to help people do that. We want people to be back in the building, enjoying the experience of learning together,” he said. Dr. Herron will also help in planning ways to reconnect Rockaway’s Fontbonne family as the school hosts celebrations for its 85th anniversary. “For our alumni, there’s going to be a lot of different ways for them to come home and we expect there will be events at The Rockaway Hotel and the Harbor Light.”

Rebaroque Surf— A Party of Surfable Sound By Kami-Leigh Agard
Imagine plugging in your music to a beautifully upholstered, amped-up Bluetooth surfboard! This Saturday, July 30 at 7 p.m., Hackfarm Galleries grants you this exclusive multi-sensory experience at their opening reception of Rebaroque Surf. Blending his music history, creativity and technical skills, local multi-media artist Mikal Hameed, mastermind behind this interactive exhibit of 13 surfboards, encourages you to plug in and share your music with fellow attendees, thus spinning the exhibit’s vibe to an epic dance party. When asked what inspired Rebaroque, Hameed shared, “I guess you can say it boils down to my love for music and art. My grandma used to crochet my headphones into my hat. I was always plugged into music. The people in my family are all musicians. (Hameed is related to James Brown, Otis Day and legendary jazz drummer, Billy Higgins). I am the only one that can’t sing or play an instrument, but I was blessed with the passion to draw and build things. I come
from the ‘80s boom box generation, and I created Rebaroque as a medium for us to move away from today’s headphone existence.” The 13 surf panels (both long and short boards) in this exhibit are what Hameed describes as the “second generation” of Rebaroque Surf. With this group, Hameed said he really honed in on truly improving and enhancing the sound. “There’s a whole subculture obsessed with the building of audio systems, and I really got into that. This second generation of Rebaroque Surf panels features Bluetooth wireless audio, compatible with any Bluetooth built-in device, with each panel capable of streaming music wirelessly and in-stereo from up to 50 feet. The panels are powered by a state-of-the-art class D digital amplifier delivering up to 100 Watts of high-fidelity sound to a set of three tuned speakers giving a smooth frequency response from 50 Hz to 25 KHz,” he said. As for the aesthetic look, Hameed describes it as mid-century, and this is quite evidenced in the modern, clean graphic patterns of the fabrics used to upholster the surfboard panels. Also, so me of the color combinations will definitely breathe air into a room, whether it be a living room or restaurant dining area. All surfboard panels at the exhibit are up for sale, and price points affordably range from $700 to $1,000. They each come with a certificate of authenticity, readyto-hang, and also come in artist editions (for example hand-painted), and build-toorder systems, which are flexible to the preferences

of each client. For Hameed, bringing Rebaroque to Rockaway is a journey that came full circle with his desire to introduce something that could benefit the community at large. “When I first started Rebaroque, the trend at the time was iPods and other MP3 players. Now with the evolution of technology, Bluetooth makes the sound installation even more minimalist,” Hameed said. “These frames literally just plug into the wall and give a great sound. I really poured my heart into this and want people in beach communities like Rockaway to really have fun listening to their music with these pieces that surely will elicit a conversation about how we listen and share music today. I’m even open to customizing these pieces for boutique hotels and restaurants. The goal is to meld art and music together in a sustainable manner. “All the surfboards used are upcycled through donations from friends, local surf shops, and my own findings. I take boards that are completely broken, unusable. I refuse to work on a board that is salvageable, at least for surfing. I want people not to just enjoy the aesthetic of the board or the sound, but also its value as an upcycled piece that was transformed into a visually pleasing, functional piece of art,” Hameed said. As for what’s ahead for Rebaroque, Hameed is paddling full steam ahead. He’s planning on
attending the Miami Design Show (the mecca for all things furniture design bringing together gallerists, designers, curators and critics); introducing Bluetooth sounds to other functional items of furniture, including planters and chairs; plus, traveling globally to other beach communities like Bali, where he can salvage old surfboards, use local artisan fabrics and introduce Rebaroque on a local level. As for the exhibit happening this Saturday, July 30, 7 p.m. at Hackfarm Galleries (9108 Rockaway Beach Blvd-rear building), Hameed wants folks to come, plug in and dance. “Music is made to be shared. And especially with the times we are living in, we should take every opportunity to come together and share one of life’s greatest art forms, music. On Saturday, I’m going to be DJing from my tricked-out beach cruiser outfitted with its own Bluetooth speaker surfboard,” he said. Attendees will also be treated to light appetizers and beverages. Also, note that after the opening reception on Saturday, Rebaroque Surf will only be up one more day on Sunday, July 31 during Hackfarm Gallery’s opening hours. Dietary Supplements
According to the latest data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, 52% of U.S. adults reported using at least one dietary supplement in the prior 30 days, and 31% reported using a multivitamin-mineral supplement. The most common reason given for using supplements was for overall health and wellness and to fill nutrient gaps in the diet. If you have read this column before, then you know I often write about disease prevention strategies that are periodically reviewed by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). Because new studies and information are released and published in the medical
literature every day, the USPSTF will periodically review topics to keep their recommendations up to date. Recently, the USPSTF released its latest findings regarding the use of vitamins and supplements to prevent various diseases. Over the years I have known quite a few patients who spend inordinate sums of money on all kinds of vitamins, minerals, and supplements. They do so believing that they are preventing various diseases and conditions from affecting them, often without a shred of real clinical evidence to back up their beliefs. In 2014, the USPSTF last released their findings on the use of vitamins and
minerals to prevent disease, especially cardiovascular disease and cancer. They found no evidence of any benefit from these supplements. This year the USPSTF reviewed data from more than 90 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) published since 2014 that studied the same topic. Here is what they found: The review findings applied to adults who were not pregnant or trying to become pregnant and who lived in the community. They found the current evidence is insufficient (I recommendation) to assess the balance of benefits and harms for the use of multivitamins for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. They also found that the current evidence is insufficient (I recommendation) to assess the balance of benefits and harms for the use of single or paired nutrient supplements (other than beta carotene and vitamin E) for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. Thirdly, they recommended against the use of beta carotene or vitamin E supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer. The reason for this last recommenda-
The Rockaway Times tion is due to the harm of increased lung cancer incidence that has been found with the use of beta carotene by individuals who smoke or have occupational exposure to asbestos. Among the various combinations of supplements that were studied were beta carotene and vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D with or without calcium, and calcium without vitamin D. One of the main reasons for the two I, or data insufficient, recommendations is that most of the trials they reviewed were too short. Because cardiovascular disease and cancer both develop so slowly, in order for a study to truly measure whether or not these supplements either cause or prevent these conditions, the study needs to be very long, as in 10 or 20 years at least. Meanwhile, if you want to continue to take a daily multivitamin (as I do) there does not appear to be any harm in doing so. However, if you spend serious cash for supplements, you might want to talk it over with your doctor. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes. com.

Our sleepy little town has And so, as we reach the half-way grown exponentially over the last point, I realize I haven’t really couple of years with an explosion been out much. I have still enof restaurants, music, happen- joyed the summer and have been
here or there, but it feels like the small-town feel is drifting away a bit. My mermaid still says I am only “down for the day,” but I’ve been here forty years now, and can’t walk a block without saying hello to someone, or having a conversation about this or that, so that a five-minute walk to the store turns into a twenty-minute escapade. But even with that, I still feel a bit of loss for Rockaway. The building continues, the driving is getting harder and harder, and the speed cameras are everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I love Rockaway and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, but there is a feeling I get that we are approaching the point where everything is simply too much. And maybe it’s just me, and it’s the middle of the summer, there are sharks in the water (who knew that’s where they were!), but I really feel like it might be time to slow everything down and focus on making what we have better,
rather than just adding more. The music falls into this category too. There is music everywhere and some bands are determined to play as much as they can and as many times as they can during the summer. I get that, but I really think it might be better to go back to that old maxim, “less is more.” I had a neighbor who berated me (nicely) that I should stop writing how wonderful Rockaway was. Instead, he counseled that I should write about how hard the winters were, how difficult it can be to live through a storm, how hard it is to park. In other words, try to make it less appealing so that we weren’t overwhelmed and bombarded by “too much.” It’s taken me a few years, but I think he was right, it’s time to focus on less and realize that “too much” can actually be “too much.” If you think I’ve said enough, you’re probably right, it’s too much! Enjoy the rest of the summer, winter’s coming!

What’s in a Name? Howard Beach By John C. Harris, Ranger at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
In the late 19th century, William J. Howard—a wealthy leather manufacturer sought to develop Hawthorne Creek, a sparsely populated but well-known fishing destination that flowed through the meadows north of Jamaica Bay. The land, under the jurisdiction of the town of Jamaica, was exchanged by the Canarsie people to settlers in the 17th century and later absorbed by the British Colonists. Earnest residential development of Jamaica Bay followed the 1880 completion of the New York, Woodhaven, Rockaway Railroad, after which the remote fishing destinations on the far side of the farmland that served New York City were reconsidered for permanent living. In 1897, Howard bought 37 acres of land west of Hawthorne Creek to de-
velop a new community. Within two years, a 1,750-foot-long pier adorned by a three-story Victorian-style Hotel Howard was completed. Then, in 1909, a fire consumed the grand hotel and pier. However, Howard stuck around. Committed to making his name stick, the speculator went on to dredge Hawthorne Creek, fill in its banks, and built the new Howard Estates. New York’s very own Venice was underway. Recreation on the end of Howard Beach’s engineered peninsula grew with the community. In 1912, the completion of a club-

house referred to affectionately as the "Casino" provided the namesake Casino Park, and a new fishing pier was extended into the Bay. Development along the canals grew steadily, along the way Hawthorne Creek became Hawtree Creek, and in 1916 Howard Estates became Howard Beach. Today, at Old Howard Beach— the original location of Howard’s first pier and hotel—stands a vital feature of Gateway National Recreation Area. It is not the typical image that comes to mind when one thinks of a National Park. In fact, its level ground, concrete paths, and athletic facilities resemble a typical city park, but that is exactly why it is important. It is Frank M. Charles Park. Named after Frank Charles who grew up in the Howard Beach community and attended Columbia University until 1917, when he was drafted by the U.S. Army into World War I. Tragically, within a year, Private Charles was killed
on a mission to free prisoners of war from behind enemy lines. To honor Charles, the "Casino" was transformed into Pvt. Frank M. Charles Post #480 of the American Legion, and in the 1940s, the surrounding area was redeveloped into a community park. When Gateway was created in 1972, the National Park Service absorbed Frank M. Charles Park. In addition to honoring the memory of Private Charles, the dynamic space offers a familiar setting of ballparks and jungle gyms establishing a gateway to the National Parks for nearby communities who might otherwise consider the typically remote NPS locations out of reach. A visit to Frank Charles Park can encourage the exploration of the neighboring Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, inspiring a new connection to the National Park Service, and, in turn, generate a greater sense of stewardship over the health of the Bay and the environment at large.

The Food and Beverage Insider THE MARTINI GUIDE By Natalie Crooks
It has been about 100 years since the martini reached popularity in the United States. To this day, martinis are frequently ordered in bars by everyone from fresh-faced 21-year-olds to seasoned, silver-haired patrons. While the martini has remained one of the most classic, well-known cocktails, its formula has evolved throughout the years and now ordering a martini requires a bit of specificity. The original martini recipe included London dry gin and dry vermouth, combined at a 2:1 ratio and stirred over ice, the garnish choices included olives or a twist. Some classic recipes include the addition of orange bitters, an iteration I personally adore. Of course, martinis nowadays often forego vermouth altogether, some beverage professionals will insist that a martini with no vermouth is not a
martini at all, but we’ll let that one slide. Ordering your martini “dry” or “extra dry” limits the amount of vermouth, but even an extra dry martini has little vermouth in it, so if you don’t like the taste of vermouth be sure to specify that with your server or bartender. For fans of very small amounts of vermouth, try ordering a “vermouth rinse” a method of swirling the vermouth around the glass and then dumping it out. Everyone knows the famous James Bond martini order “shaken not stirred” and most martinis are shaken these days. Shaken martinis are colder and a little more watered-down which makes them easier to drink. The shaken trend correlates well with the vodka trend, many people these days order vodka martinis over the traditional gin. Vodka is a great liquor for shaking, whereas shaking gin “bruises” the liquor, essentially causing the top
notes to dissipate. The dirty martini, consisting of vodka and olive juice, seems to be the most popular option amongst the younger crowd, this salty concoction is usually served with olives, sometimes stuffed with bleu cheese. There are a plethora of popular martini options that go far beyond the addition of olive juice. Espresso martinis have reigned supreme in the cocktail world over the past few years and provide the perfect caffeine boost for a long night. The 50-50 martini has some popularity, especially in the beverage world, and boasts equal amounts gin and vermouth, stirred and often garnished with a lemon twist. You can find a Gibson on many cocktail lists these days, which is a martini garnished with a cocktail onion. As the years go on, we are sure to see many more creative martini iterations pop up at bars and
restaurants across the country. Whether shaken or stirred, vodka or gin, olives or twist, there is sure to be a martini recipe to satisfy every palate. This iconic cocktail will undoubtedly never go out of style and is the perfect pairing for everything from oysters to steak. Next time you’re out for a cocktail opt for a classic martini to switch things up or a nice dirty martini to pair with some briny oysters, you’re sure to find something you enjoy. Cheers!

Give It Up for the Coaches
One of the key ingredients to the success of the Summer Classic each year is its coaches. All are volunteers and are handed the task of guiding and molding 10+ athletes from various parishes and neighborhoods into a team in the short span of two summer months, without the benefit of practices. Many bring great skill and experience as coaches and players themselves at the college and high school levels including six who have played at the Division 1 level and two who have coached Division 1. In the introductory 2nd Grade division, the coaches are Kerry Anderson Brady, Lisa Hayden, Kate and Corey McFarland, Meghan Donahue Anderson and Mike Corvi, Colin Courtney and Matt Reilly. For Girls Grammar Junior, Ed Dennis, Kathy Marquardt, Greg Hearn, Fiona Mullen, James Tubridy, Greg Bender, Kerry Brady and Grace Leahy. Moving up to the Girls Grammar Senior, Matt Courtney and Caitlin Mullin, Paul Casares and Timmy Riches, Terence Moriarty and John Ronayne, Marianne Hanning, Courtney McCool and Lauren Duggan, Maryann Polanco and Kristin Youngberg, Dee Tubridy, Ed Cashen and Allison Chavanne. Girls High School coaches are Jim Mullen, Sue Kenney, Larry Hawkins, Justin Klug, Terry Greene, and Randy Neiswenter.
Moving onto the Boys- in Grammar Junior, Frank Wassenbergh, James Brennan, Mike McCann, Danny Dougherty, Pat Palmese, Sean Hayden, Casey Sullivan and Chris DiGennaro. For Boys Grammar Middle, Joe Mingino and Curtis Borgstede, Brian Gallagher and Rob Allen, Pat Hayden and Adam Bishop, Terence Moriarity and Mike Grimaldi, Marty Andresen, Chris Gilroy and John Briody, Donnie Powell and Eddie Minson, Mike Brenna and Jay Youngberg. In the Boys Grammar Senior division, Eugene Brennan, Marty Murray, Michael Friedman, Matt Belford, Paul Peterson, Jimmy Price, Danny Kleiin, Joe Visco, Cody Gauvard, James Delaney, Pat Nash, Paul Casares, Frank Wassenbergh, Sean Hayden, Brian Mullen. Finally, the Boys High School coaches are Frank Walker, Joe Harkins and Jim McCool, Joe Courtney and John Ronayne, Joe Loconte, Anthony Dagnone, Bob Leckie and Joe Featherston, Michael Friedman, Jack Mullaly, Richie George, Tommy Coates and JR Riley. The Graybeards championships are tonight at St. Camillus Springman Hall at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Men's Open playoffs begin next Thursday with quarterfinals, before the Summer Classic playoffs are in full swing starting on August 8. Wrestle Talk
VINCE MCMAHON RETIRES! By Eric Jayden
So, the biggest news in the world of Pro Wrestling is the announcement that Vince McMahon will be retiring from not only running the WWE but apparently from wrestling business altogether. The shocking news, reported this past Monday July 25, at the age of 77 Vince K. McMahon is retiring as announced on his Twitter page. Since, the announcement of his retirement, speculations have been running rampant on the reason(s) why. By now everyone in the wrestling world and in the business community already knows that Vince McMahon is currently under investigation by the Board of Directors for the WWE, for alleged "Hush Money Payments" involving his alleged relationship with WWE Staff and Non-Disclosure Agreements. But I have to say, I
did not expect Mr. McMahon to retire and leave the business altogether. But yes its true, Vince will soon be gone, but will he and when? It is common knowledge that the WWE overall success was driven by Vince McMahon and any talks about his departure from the company would most definitely affect stock prices of the company. But the name McMahon will still be around the WWE, as his daughter Stephanie McMahon is currently the Interim CEO and his son in law Triple HHH has been brought back into his VP of Creative position. So, Vince McMahon will still have influence in the product he helped build. But how much interest will he be able to control? Right now, Vince owns about 80 percent of the company's shares and even if he is dismissed from his position by the Board of Directors, will
Vince totally walk away from the wrestling business and the WWE completely? I say No, as I feel that Vince McMahon will have a difficult time leaving the business he helped grow. He will definitely keep his influences as long as his daughter and son in the law are involved in some capacity. Many questions have been pouring in about his retirement and how I
feel about it and I have trouble believing that Vince will truly walk away from the WWE. This is all breaking news so we have a lot of details coming in but we will continue to follow up and keep you all informed as more information keeps coming out. Please send your questions in to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
