Traffic Solutions Working, For Now? By Katie McFadden

Compared to the previous weekend of July 18 and 19, traffic seemed to run pretty smoothly this past weekend. Seeing how crowded the peninsula became, especially on Sunday, July 19, local officials took action to try to rectify the situation. On Wednesday, July 22, Councilman Eric Ulrich, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder and a representative from Senator Joe Addabbo’s office, met with agencies such the Department of Transportation, the MTA, the NYPD, the Parks Department, National Park Service, US Park Police and Community Board 14 to try to come up with some solutions. Some of them turned out to be highly effective. The Department of Transportation says it has followed through with what was discussed at the meeting. According to the DOT, traffic light signal timing has been increased to keep traffic flowing better. In a statement to the Rockaway Times, the DOT said that they “increased signal timing on cycle lengths from 100 to 120 seconds on Cross Bay Boulevard during the weekend from 10 am to 3 pm for southbound traffic, and from 3 pm to 11 pm for northbound traf-

fic. We also implemented this plan for the entire Woodhaven/Cross Bay corridor starting at 8 am, and we will continue to monitor the area. This weekend we plan to increase signal timing from 60 and 90 seconds to 120 seconds on Flatbush Avenue from the Belt Parkway to Gil Hodges Bridge for southbound traffic from 8 am to 3 pm, and for northbound traffic from 3 pm to 11 pm. This change will apply on weekends only until the Labor Day weekend.” The New York City Police Department also followed through with what was discussed at the meeting. In response to several complaints about people parking their cars in illegal spots during the busy July 19, the NYPD took action this past weekend to ensure that people were following the parking rules. According to the 100th Precinct, “this past weekend we deployed our neighborhood coordination officers (NCOs) and other precinct resources along with the assistance of NYPD traffic and issued a total of 340 parking summonses for the weekend between 100th precinct officers and NYPD traffic. On Saturday we conducted a tow operation, which resulted in 11 cars being towed and one car booted. We were advis-

ing residents that they could call their neighborhood officer directly on their cell phone to report parking violations.” The local precinct says they also did their part to make sure traffic was moving smoothly in the busiest spots. “We monitored key intersections for traffic flow to ensure traffic was properly moving. We will continue to conduct these operations especially on the weekends throughout the summer,” Captain Craig Adelman said. Councilman Ulrich said the MTA would “closely monitor the traffic and add additional cash only lanes and/ or EZPass lanes whenever necessary.” However, according to the MTA, they didn’t do anything differently, and simply put blame on the number of people that came to Rockaway on July 19. “The consensus from the meeting, which MTA had always maintained, was that our two bridges, Cross Bay and Marine Parkway, have been, are now, and will always be, sufficiently staffed and patrolled by our employees; the recent traffic backups were due to volume and other issues unrelated to our bridges,” an MTA spokesperson said. The MTA may not be completely wrong. According to the Parks Department, there were 410,000 people that visited the city beach on Sunday, July 19, which was almost double the amount from the previous weekend. It was 89 degrees and sunny that Sunday. The day before, an 83-degree

day that was forecasted for rain, only brought 27,000 to Rockaway Beach. Riis Park also had an overwhelming number of cars in the parking lot, with 7,135 cars on Sunday, July 19, compared to a measly 600 on Saturday, July 18. This past weekend, numbers were back to average on the city beaches, with 245,000 beachgoers on Saturday, July 25 and 206,000 on Sunday, July 26. As we’re in the middle of a heat wave, the true test of whether the traffic solutions are working, may come this upcoming weekend. The current forecast shows bright and sunny, 88-degree days on both Saturday and Sunday.

Business Loans to be Made Available Through New Partnership Two local funding organizations announced that they would be entering a partnership to increase business owners’ ability to receive low-interest loans. The Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC) and the Disability Opportunity Fund (DOF) will together offer loans anywhere from $50,000 to $500,000 to businesses both existing in Rockaway or those considering relocating or expanding to the Rockaways, according to a statement released by RDRC President and CEO Kevin Alexander. The DOF is a Certified Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that aims to support the needs of people with disabilities, and are based in nearby Albertson, New York. “As a neighbor of the Rockaways and having experienced firsthand the effects of Superstorm Sandy, we are proud to partner with Kevin and the RDRC team to help this community its recovery process,” Charlie Hammerman, the DOF’s president, said. Inquiring businesses are asked to either call the RDRC at (718) 3275300 or email at info@rdrc.org.

Tis The Season To Coast Sometimes I feel like former Mayor Ed Koch calling everyone a whacko. A while back, I said men who wear button pajamas are nuts and if you sleep next to a man who does – sleep with one eye open. I think I said if you call the Marine Park Bridge the Marine Parkway Bridge you’re nuts too. So, it doesn’t take much for me to think you’re nuts. But don’t be offended. This is Rockaway, with more nuts than your average Planter’s Peanuts jar. Being labeled a nut just makes you a member of the local majority.

Page 5

THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2015

And now, you’re nuts if you like to work this time of year. You shouldn’t be working, you should be telling summer to slow down. In 1930, world famous economist John Maynard Keynes predicted the workweek would eventually shrink to 15 hours. How’s that one working out? Although the 15-hour workweek is not officially on the books, it can be argued that actual work in a 40-hour week for a lot of jobs is about 15 hours. Bathroom breaks and time spent listening to never-shut-up co-

workers eats up a good 20 hours a week. Seasonal jobs are the exception. If you’ve gotta bust it this time of year, you’ve gotta bust it. But a lot of things slow down. You can’t get anything done because someone’s vacation or your own vacation puts everything on hold. You can’t take off or shut your business because that would screw things up for the rest of the year. You can’t get anything done. You know it; your boss knows it. Lots of places shut down early on Fridays because people the business is dependent on (customers, suppliers, etc) have already taken off. Pretty soon all of a Friday is a charade. (Charade is a great word to use – you act like you’re working, you mime it, but you’re really not doing anything). The Friday mindset actually starts taking hold late Thursday and leaks into Monday. Or leaks into all of July and August. Summer is for mailing it in and making token appearances. You’d like to send in a blow up doll to take your place. And if I could teach one to type I’d send one in for me. But I’m going to do the next, closest thing. I’m mailing it in this week. Faking it. I’ll just go online and find a couple of items that may or may not amuse you. But either way, you get it. You’re probably reading this on Thurs-

day or Friday. You know how it is, my brain’s checked out. I’m mailing it in. (Truth be told this was harder than I thought it would be. There’s a lot of gar-bazh to read through). Here’s some fake product: You know a girl is mad when she starts off her sentence by saying, “I just find it funny how… “ because there is a 99 percent chance that she did not find it funny at all. Want to escalate an argument? Smile. If attacked by a mob of clowns, go for the juggler. The best friendships are built on a sold foundation of alcohol, sarcasm, laughter and dislike of the same people. Blessed are those who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused. Ok, signing off, don’t work too hard. Which, of course, you won’t.

Proudly serving our community for over 25 years.

Bishop Lawrence Provenzano, the Episcopal Bishop of Long Island and President of the Board of Trustees of St. John’s Hospital, stood before a crowd in a conference room at St. John’s Hospital on Monday to introduce a new CEO for the Far Rockaway hospital. The new hire, Provenzano emphasized, was an indication that “St. John’s is not going out of business. We’re committed to remain open, to grow the work we do and the ministry in the community. We’re here to stay. Again, St. John’s has no short-term plans or long terms plans to close. Let’s just take that off the table.” Gerard (Jerry) Walsh was hired by the St. John’s Board of Directors after an extensive, nationwide search. Even this suggests a new direction for St. John’s. For the past “two decades” management firms had selected various CEOs not necessarily in concert with the Board’s approval. Provenzano said the relationship with the new CEO will be “fully owned” by the Board. Walsh is a Queens native, having attended Monsignor McClancy High School and St. John’s University. Before taking the helm at St. John’s Hospital, Walsh was CEO of Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown, Maryland. Walsh said he “literally started at the bottom” of the health care industry and worked his way up to the executive level. He said his path allows him to be familiar with the many levels and departments within a hospital setting. He said his biggest strength is “putting a good team together. And I’m a guy committed to patient care.” Walsh added, “We have a lot of work to do. But I am committed to making St. John’s a place people want to come to. My first priority will be getting to know the employees, hospital and community leaders and the medical staff so that we may work together to provide an excellent patient and family experience at St. John’s.” According to the bio released by St. John’s, Walsh spent 15 years as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Shore Regional Health, a three-hospital health system affiliated with University of Maryland Medical System. In this position, he was first charged to lead the regionalization plan for the Mid Shore, which integrated Chester River Health System into Shore Health System to form a new company - Shore Regional Health. Further, with overall sys-

tem responsibility for net revenues of $320M, Quality and Process Improvement, Patient Safety, Joint Commission Accreditation and Shore Medical Group (a multispecialty physician network and hospitalist program), he oversaw 231 acute licensed beds, a 20-bed Acute Rehab Center, Home Health and Hospice, 2,625 employees and 415 active physicians, and built multi-million dollar programs including a 50-physician multi-specialty group practice. Mr. Walsh also has significant administrative experience from his COO role with North Shore University Hospital at Forest Hills, New York, where he oversaw a 19,000 sq. ft. emergency department reconstruction project, initiated a $30M facility construction project, worked with architects and engineers to plan construction for a new two story radiology building, and instituted an extensive 12-month management education and professional development project. He also developed outpatient practice units for Pain Management, Men’s Health, and Pediatric Cardiology, developed an ongoing service excellence program to improve customer satisfaction, and oversaw medical staff growth to include an additional three hundred new physicians. As for work going on at St. John’s, Provenzano said there is a plan in place for the continued expansion of the Emergency Room services but said the hospital needs State funds to complete the work. A spokesperson said $9.2 million is needed and though a decision on such allocation of funds was expected in May, that has now been moved to October.

Specialty Eye Care identify themselves, stopped in The Rockaway Times office insisting the whale has been spotted near Cape Cod. We’ve assigned an investigative team to follow this whale of a tale. ***** A 16-year-old girl from Belle Harbor went missing last Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The news was posted on Facebook and flyers with her picture were put on numerous telephone and light poles throughout Belle Harbor and Rockaway Beach. She was found safe the next day reportedly having slept at a friend’s house after an argument at home. The community, both online and off, really did a great job responding to the pleas for help. Some signs might still be posted but, rest assured, the young girl is fine. ***** The Rockaway Palms, a community and event space, on Beach 96th is set to open. You can get a peek as early as Friday evening. The Palms will host a variety of experiences such as select pop-up boutiques, curated movie nights, and a dinner series prepared by talented chefs. Oh, and the name comes honestly. There are actual palm trees set about making this spot downright tropical. ***** Tuesday is the National Night Out Against Crime but it’s also a night you can learn about mosquitoes and ticks. Our Blood Sucking Friends: An Introduction to Ticks and Mosquitoes Presented by Howard Ginsberg will be presented at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 7 p.m. ***** After an outcry by residents, 11 cars got towed last weekend by the 100th Precinct for parking in places they shouldn’t have been parking. But there was more than towing going on: 340 summonses were issued by traffic police and the 100th Precinct for parking violations. Holy quota reached. ***** Bike lanes are now marked on the boardwalk. So far, the powers-that-be seem to be exercising common sense judgment as far as bike riding rules go. Bikes and people can coexist at all hours of every day. ***** Rockaway’s first contemporary dance performance series will take place on the sand at Beach 81st Street on Saturday, August 1 starting at 4 P.m. ***** Happy Birthday Fred Marino!

In last week’s Rockaway Times we published a photo of an official Parks Department vehicle, a BMW with New Jersey plates. Our loyal readers at Parks Headquarters told us the car is on loan from BMW, which is offering the car to help Parks count trees. Registering the car in Jersey was BMW’s call. And as far as counting trees in Rockaway, Parks could use some help. Parks is taking a trees census and mapping trees and is asking those who might be interested in volunteering to go to their website: nycgovparks.org/trees/treescount ***** Inspired by the Coney Island tradition, Rockaway’s own nautical celebration, the “Poseidon’s Parade is coming. The Lazer Speaks By Lou Pastina A friend recently suggested that I try a kayaking adventure with Gateway National Park Service. I had no idea that such a thing even existed. She told me that NPS offers free kayaks and guided tours around Jamaica Bay into and around some pretty cool areas not normally seen from the mainland. So, with plenty of sunscreen, a hat, water, and non-waterproof gloves, off I went with her husband to the Marina on Flatbush Avenue to meet the rangers! At first I thought this was simply an elaborate plan to lose both her husband and me in the marshes of Jamaica Bay, like so many of my Italian friends of days gone by. No doubt she had taken the cannoli’s and left the gun! Then I thought maybe this is a reaction to my singing and her husband’s guitar playing, as we are the founders of the Grayriders band and often practice in one another’s houses. A fitting end to the band indeed. But no, none of that was true, because as I arrived at the Marina there were plenty of rangers and plenty of fellow intrepid travellers with paddles ready for an adventure. This one, and every one is different, was to leave from Dead Horse Bay and go under the bridge leading into Gerritsen Beach heading along Flatbush Avenue toward Avenue U and Marine Park. In all, there were about 40 water-

bound travellers and the instructions were pretty simple: get in the kayak, paddle, and follow the ranger. How hard could that be? Certainly there were people older and younger than me, I could do this! Being in a kayak out in the middle of Jamaica Bay was absolutely wonderful. There is blue sky as far as the eye can see, and the water looked really clean. Sailing into Gerritsen Beach we passed long-legged snowy herons and one-leg standing cormorants on the shoreline. When we got to the Marine Park Salt Marsh Center we were treated to an aerial display of two ospreys circling their prey below. Very cool stuff. I am told this was about a two-mile kayak ride, but it felt like twenty as we were going against the wind most of the way. And when I tried to get out of the kayak, my legs felt like rubber, which was weird, because my arms were doing all the paddling. But even the oldest were able to get up without any trouble, and not to embarrass myself in front of my band mate, I summoned up all I had and stood shakily. The ride back proved to be easier with the wind at our backs. Gerritsen Beach Salt Marsh is a very pretty area. Almost all the burned out cars from the 1970s are gone and since Sandy, the shoreline has been re-enforced with sea grass and rocks. The island in the middle once had a bridge that con-

nected it to the mainland, and I am told the island was once home to rabbits and other wild life. If you had dropped me here without telling me where I was, I would never guess that I was in the wilds of Brooklyn, on the outskirts of Queens. Rather, I would say that I was off the coast of Maine. It was that beautiful. When we got back to the Marina we had kayaked more than four miles in total. My non-waterproof gloves left me with blue stained hands that still serve as a reminder of the trip. And of the 40 or so paddlers on this trip, amaz-

ingly only three were from Rockaway. Check out Gateway’s website (http:// www.nps.gov/gate/) as they offer these trips for absolutely free!! They bring the kayaks and the guides, and you bring the courage for an adventure. My legs are still a little shaky, but it was the highlight of my summer so far. Give it a try! Beach Sessions Dance Series Starts August 1 Beach Sessions, Rockaway’s first outdoor contemporary dance performance series, kicks off this weekend. The series will take place each Saturday in August, with performances at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Beach 81st Street. Beach Sessions was developed by Sasha Okshteyn and produced in collaboration with Black & White Project Space. The series will feature different choreographed dance performances each week and is intended to bring attention to the ocean and beach, in a creative way.

The first performance, called The D.R.E.A.M. Ring, will take place on Saturday, August 1. On August 8, a ballet performance by Emery LeCrone Dance will take place. The Loni Landon Dance Project will perform on August 15 and Shannon Gillen | VIM VIGOR will finish the series on August 22. After each dance performance, there will be a beach cleanup at 7 p.m. All who participate, will receive a free drink ticket for a beverage at a local bar. For more information about the series, check out http://beachsessions.tumblr.com/.

WordWaves to Showcase Artistic Writing Written and spoken word can be an art too, and on Friday, August 7, several talented individuals will show the beauty of words at Rockaway Artists Alliance’s WordWaves. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., head to the T7 Gallery in Fort Tilden for an evening of inspiration, poetry, comedy, storytelling and song. Headlining the event is poet, Chris Cipollini, making his maiden voyage to the Rockaways. Riding in on the A train, songwriter, NYC Subway Girl aka Cathy Grier will perform folk-blues. Special guest artist and poet Puma Perl brings the East Village home. Comedian Sarah Fearon from Irish American Writers and Artists and a few friends will weave unique

tales. The evening will also include the poetry and writings of Micheal Kusen, Stephan Barry, Sandra Proto, Mary Lannon, George C Pizzo, Kathleen Donohoe, Patricia Hannan, Dan Guarino and songwriters John Simonelli, Frank Robbins, Johnny KnoWhere, Jon Kiebon, Brandon Dawson and Jon Rosado round the evening with music. WordWaves is a part of the RAA’s bigger project, Rockaway ArtWave, a summer long celebration of the arts in Rockaway. The RAA’s exhibit, Vicennium: Pillars of RAA will run through August 30th. For an official Rockaway ArtWave map, schedule of events and more information, visit RAA’s website www.rockawayartistsalliance.org.

ROCK JITSU PERFORMS at last year’s night out

Despite Hurdles, Night Against Crime to Go On at New Location By Dylan Watton

The 32nd Annual National Night Out Against Crime will now be held at a new location. On Tuesday, August 4, the event will take place in the parking lots on Beach 94th Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard directly across from the 100th Precinct, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Originally scheduled to take place at the athletic fields of Beach Channel High School, Danny Ruscillo, president of the 100th Precinct Community Council and a key organizer of the event, said many issues arose with the Department of Education that led to the change. “This caused me a lot of headaches, he said. “I’ve been president of the board for eight years and I’ve never gone through this before. Last week, an article in the Rockaway Times stated that the DOE had chosen not to waive permit fees totaling more than $2,000. Ruscillo said that the DOE eventually agreed to waive the fee, but they also requested for a far more expensive insurance policy, vendor licenses, and other regulations

&2/- .)'(4 /54 &!#% 0!).4).'

that made it untenable to hold the Night Out Against Crime at Beach Channel. “I was just trying to be a liaison between the police, the community, and the youth, Ruscillo said. “I felt that [the DOE] was trying to push us away. Ruscillo also stated that the Mayor’s office did not provide adequate support and that these issues ultimately forced a change of location. The National Night Out Against Crime is held annually to promote cooperation between police the communities they serve. Each year, residents and families from the Rockaways, Breezy Point, and Broad Channel come together with the members of the police and other community agencies and organizations for a night of performances, activities, and fun. In 2014, more than 40 million people nationwide participated in the Night Out Against Crime. This year, the attractions include free cotton candy and ices; face painting, caricature portraits and carnival games; a karate and jiu-jitsu show; and perhaps the most fun, a dunk tank featuring Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder, Detective Brian McCabe of the 100th Precinct, Officer Carl Borgi of Transit District 23, and Rockaway residents John Cori and Glenn DiResto. A 50/50 raffle will take place and prizes will be given out. The 100th Precinct and Transit District will also present their respective Cop of the Year awards. Ruscillo thanked Assemblyman Goldfeder and his staff for their support as well as his colleagues on the community council and the NYPD, FDNY and the Parks Department. “The Mayor along with the DOE will not stop our National Night out Against Crime in 2015, he asserted. “Going forward we are about Rockaway and we are about police and community coming together.

New Stuff Dear Editor: (Re: Secrets of Rockaway, 7/16/15) I lived in Far Rockaway until about 1950. I rode around on my bike a lot and thought I knew all the interesting spots in Far Rockaway and Bayswater. But your tour pointed out places I never knew about, so thanks for pointing them out. Someday, I may get back and check them out. Jack Zakin

Praise From The Teacher Dear Editor: It took a few dips in my pool to remind my frazzled brain to thank you for publishing my students’ writing this past year. You should be proud, because the kids wrote for “The Rockaway Times,” and not just for me anymore (smile). Anyway, I know I speak for the teachers, students and parents of PS/MS 114, who have said so many wonderful things about you, and how much they looked forward to your witty column— and, not just the children’s work each week! I’m probably misquoting John Galsworthy a bit, but thinking about our past year with you, brings to mind his beautiful words, “And who is to say, whatever disenchantment follows, that children ever forget magic. Or that, we can betray, on this leaden earth the apple tree, the singing…” And, unforgettable people like you, Kevin. Thanks for bringing magic into our lives. Joan Diehl (Editor’s note: Please caution your students about writing over-thetop undeserving letters to hacks like me!)

The Ferry Guy Says Get Ready Dear Editor: In response to your front cover story “The Secret’s Out (7/23/15)” is an example of what will happen if the Rockaway ferry operator in 2017 does not have the capacity to provide larger vessels in the summertime. In NYC there are 26,000 places of public assembly with their workers off during midweek. Additionally, there are approximately 500,000 college students in NYC and all college dorm rooms in NYC are at capacity with visiting students and interns during

The Rockaway Times

the summertime. Furthermore, there is a minimum of 30 hotels in lower Manhattan alone and most are without pools and there are now over 65,000 residents in Lower Manhattan alone. Question - How many beachgoers will travel by PATH trains from NJ’s Gold Coast [Bayonne-George Washington Bridge] and will take the ferry to Rockaway Beach? How many beachgoers will get on the ferry at the BAT pier in Brooklyn, a very big unknown? How many Coney Island beachgoers will switch to the Rockaway ferry -- even Marty Markowitz will come to Rockaway! Ferry ridership for the Rockaway ferry could surpass the East River ferry with beachgoers alone. The population of Rockaway almost doubles in the summertime. With stay-vacations there will be a big demand for ferry service to Manhattan from residents and guests. There is $15 MILLION in Federal Transportation funds that can be used for ferry boats -- not docks. The money is earmarked for Rockaway. I hope the members of the ferry team at NYCEDC realize that Rockaway-Brooklyn-Manhattan will be in service the summer before the election for Mayor so we cannot leave potential voters at the dock. And on the positive side NYCEDC will be responsible for the rebirth of Rockaway, which has been in a decline for the last 50 years. Joe Hartigan

Reason To Come Back Dear Editor: (Re: Community House opening) I remember the Irish Circle so well. When I was 14 my best friend and I would peak in the door where we could hear the music and watch the people dancing, longing for the day when we were old enough to go inside. I’m 81 now and wish those times would come again. I haven’t been to Rockaway where I was born in almost 50 years, but after reading this article, I plan to visit very soon. Maria Curcio

Continued from page 10 time with the Rockaway branch of the family. It was a great week for the beach and on the Monday after the Fourth of July weekend, her son, Henry, strapped his GoPro onto his forehead, got on his boogie board and started filming. We were all on Beach 123rd Street. Suddenly a wave washed over him and the Go-Pro flew off his forehead and into the churning water. He and Rosie frantically walked up and down the shore for an hour, hoping that it would get washed back onto the shore; but it never did. Henry was heartbroken--it had taken him a long time and a lot of persuading to get his parents to buy him this expensive camera. Well, they spent the week here and on Saturday, a bunch of us were sitting on the beach when a man and his son approached us and asked if anyone had lost a GoPro--because his son found one that had washed ashore on Beach 113th Street. Apparently, he and his son were walking along the beach on Friday and that’s when his son found the camera. He brought it to his father, who then took it home and put the memory card into his computer to look at the footage, to find anything that would give him a clue about the owner of the camera. The next day, Saturday, this good Samaritan and his son walked up and down the beach to see if they could recognize any people from the footage he saw--he recognized some people in our family and also the wagon that we always brought to the beach to haul our chairs, umbrellas, etc. That’s when he came up to us to give us back the camera. It was a stunning moment of surprise and pleasure. My daughter was completely amazed that, not only had the camera washed up, but this man and his son were nice enough to try to find the owners instead of keeping the camera for themselves. My daughter tried to give the nice man a reward, but he wouldn’t accept it--she gave something to his son--but in all the confusion, we never got the names of the wonderful father and his equally wonderful son. She and her family have since gone back to Virginia. I would like to thank this man by offering him a free yoga class in his home for him and friends or family who would like to join him. I wish he would contact me at 718318-4678 and leave a message and

then we can set up a time for this “Thank you class. Just another example of why it’s so great to live in Rockaway--the people here are just amazing and special. Ruth Graves

All Things Considered Dear Editor: I’ve read Rockaway is hip now. I always thought it was hip. It’s crowded now or maybe I’m just getting old. I would love to see more park space as opposed to any more housing. O’Donohue Park on Beach 17th (which used to be a big parking lot) is now a beautiful example of what they should do on Rockaway Beach Boulevard along the A train line, as opposed to more housing. The secret is out but I’d rather be here than Staten Island. Sandra Smith

Another State Beauty Dear Editor: (Re: Secrets of Rockaway (7/16) Thank you so much for this lovely article and mention of Bayswater State Park. It truly is a gem but not the only NYS park in Queens -Gantry Plaza State Park is located in Long Island City and is a gem of a different variety. Please visit and see for yourself! Leslie Wright

Stop And Shop Needs Attention Dear Editor: I have nothing against Stop and Shop but the management should insist on bringing the same quality to Rockaway as they do to stores on Cape Cod and in upstate New York. I have shopped at multiple Stop and Shops for more than 15 years. In Rockaway, the machine that would allow customers to order deli items has been broken for more than two years. (Since Sandy‌really??) I brought this to the manager’s attention without resolution. Yes, I know, Waldbaum’s does not have the same technology, BUT it works in all of the other Stop and Shops I have frequented. We deserve and should demand that malfunctioning equipment be replaced! (Oh and ensure that someone is looking at the produce to ensure freshness). Rose

Between the Bridges in Broad Channel By Peter J. Mahon

THE TRUMP CONUNDRUM It appears that everyone is having a difficult time dealing with Donald Trump’s presidential aspirations. Every time the Donald opens his mouth the media is quick to malign his message and headline his immediate departure from the campaign in disgrace and are then perplexed when, rather than flaming out, Trump’s poll numbers keep growing. His Republican primary rivals, in an attempt to diminish this non-politician’s impact on the primary race, have referred to Trump as a “blowhard, a “barking carnival act and “the world’s biggest jackass, only to be taken aback when the Donald responds in kind with his version of a verbal “shock

and awe response accompanied by the applause of a long suffering and politically distrustful public. Even our very own local City Councilman, Eric Ulrich, has (and I think foolishly) entered the ongoing Trump dust up by complaining that “Since [Trump] announced his presidential bid, he has gone out of his way to offend immigrants, women and now veterans. Ulrich continued, “His recent attack on Senator John McCain is downright despicable. He is not suited to be President of the United States and does not deserve to have a hospital facility named after him. Councilman Ulrich’s remarks were summarily

dismissed by the Trump Organization as a “publicity stunt by an unknown politicianâ€? and also pointed out that the Trump Pavillion for Nursing and Rehabilitation at Jamaica Hospital was named back in 1975, not after Donald, but rather his mother Mary who, to the best of my knowledge, never made any disparaging remarks about illegal immigrants, women or veterans in her entire life. Our councilman would do well to keep in mind that however Donald Trump’s venture in presidential politics plays out, he will, at some point, return to his corporate headquarters in New York City at the Trump Tower and will still be a economic force to be reckoned with. This Trump conundrum derives its momentum from the simple fact that Donald Trump, unlike his political rivals, is a businessman and not a politician. A politician is an animal who will promise you a bridge even when there is no river or chasm to span. A businessman will analyze the situation and then factually tell you whether or not you need a bridge. A politician is careful to nuance his or her words very carefully so as to not offend any segment of a constituency. A successful businessman deals with the “bottom lineâ€? or as it is sometimes referred to as‌ the truth! You have to know that a candidate who speaks his or her mind is bound to drive his fellow candidates crazy! If you want to know where Donald Trump is coming from and why he is driving the media, politicians and others crazy, I suggest you read his book, the business classic, The Art of the Deal wherein he discusses those real attributes that have made him a wild-

ly successful businessman. In Think Big and Kick Ass in Business and Life, Trump further discusses some of the attributes he’s now using to befuddle his opponents such as: “Everyone who does anything is criticized. Expect it. Listen to it. Then dismiss it. I’ve been criticized for everything I’ve ever done. I do not let it get to me. ‌ Do not let it stop you. Speak up and stand outâ€?‌. “I like to go against the tideâ€?â€Śâ€œWhen you are attacked publicly, always strike backâ€?‌ “Don’t think about how you can make money. Instead, think about what you can produce or what service you can offer that is valuable and useful to people and your community.â€? This column is not an endorsement of Donald Trump’s campaign as I tend to expect that at some point in this primary race the Donald’s ego and proclivity for allowing his mouth to override his thought process will eventually cause his campaign to flame out, perhaps even by the time this article goes to press. (Or perhaps not?) Until then, these words simply stand as an endorsement of the presence of a candidate who is not a politician; who is not beholden to the taxpayer’s dime; who is not bound by the shackles of political correctness; and is possessed with the confidence of his opinions and unafraid to state them. The Donald’s presence in this race, for however long it lasts, will ensure that the other candidates will have to up their games and maybe, just maybe, straighten up and start treating the electorate as adults. An Artist’s Dream By Dylan Watton

On Rockaway Summer’s website, a quote keeps popping up. “Keep your face towards the sunshine and the shadows will fall behind you.” It’s attributed to the greatest of American poets, Walt Whitman, but it closely follows the philosophy of the site’s founder, Rockaway resident and Italian expat Giovanna Maselli. “I didn’t even know where I was going when I first got off the train here,” she said over an iced coffee at Rockaway Roasters. Despite apologizing profusely for her accent and vocabulary, she speaks perfect English. “I wanted to visit everywhere in New York that was by the ocean and the sun. I’m obsessed with it,” she said. Maselli moved to New York seven years ago to become a freelance writer following stints at fashion magazines in Italy and London. Her journeys through the city eventually brought her to Rockaway, where she fell in love with the community and its residents. “It’s such a nice mix of people in every possible way here, a social utopia,” she said. “There are certain crowds in some areas, and different crowds in others.” For Maselli, living on the peninsula has brought memories from

across the Atlantic, as well. “Rockaway reminds me of Italy in some ways, like in Sicily where you’ll see a building that’s been there for 1,000 years on one block and then nothing on the next block.” Following Hurricane Sandy, when she participated in relief work, Maselli decided to permanently move to Rockaway in 2014 and now lives year-round on Beach 91 St. Fusing her interests of art, the beach, and a close-knit community, Maselli and a partner started Rockaway Summer as a website and publication. The website, along with the collective’s Instagram feed, features strikingly beautiful images of flora, surfers, food, average beachgoers, and a myriad of other features inherent to Rockaway. Two issues were published last year, but this summer, following a difference in creative opinion, Maselli has taken Rockaway Summer in a new direction, which she described as “extremely grassroots.” Rockaway Summer is perennially evolving but does some follow some basic tenets. “It’s 50 percent local artists and 50 percent international artists,” Maselli explained. On the website, there is currently a fundraising campaign to help physically publish a third

issue, but the collective has found new life through social media. “It really is beautiful to see how you can create things with like-minded people instead of capital,” she added. The success of the collective has led Maselli to begin a new yet related endeavor. Partnering with the Riis Park Beach Bazaar, she has formed Rockaway Summer HIVE, a small, 300 square-foot tent where artists from all walks can sell their wares and services. It is

located directly behind the handball courts at Riis Park, and had its “soft opening” this past weekend. “To me, HIVE means collaboration,” Maselli said, which she also said is an “unconventional souvenir shop. We all do what we’re good at, but the project is for the community, by the community.” Maselli especially thanked Tracey Greene and the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) for their support. Continued on page 15

A Heartfelt Thank You Thank You to the people of Rockaway, Breezy, and Broad Channel for the overwhelming, tremendous support you showed for the passing of Elizabeth. Your prayers, visits and words of condolences at the wake and funeral gave us, as a family, the true feeling of love and strength for the entire Bulloch family. It truly was a great assist in getting us all through the passing of Eli. Thomas and Elianna will be raised knowing and hearing the praise of their Mom. God bless you for the love and comfort expressed to all of us,

The Bulloch Family **And just a note of “thanks and love” for your generous contributions in honor of Eli. The funds will either be utilized in assisting in the raising of the children, Thomas and Elianna, or placed in a fund for tuition and other needs. Your friendship and generosity are truly appreciated. Much love, Tommy

Artist’s Dream Continued from page 14 The HIVE will have its official opening this weekend. Among the attractions this week are a dye workshop and a weaving workshop on Saturday, plus free tarot card readings and a dreamcatcher workshop on Sunday. All of these feature Rockaway locals showcasing their talents. In future weeks, Maselli plans to have themes, such as “Whalepalooza,” dedicated to the rebuilding of Whalemena, and a pride weekend at the end of August in partnership with Out Rockaway. Artists—or in Ma-

selli’s words “anybody with a good idea”—interested in participating in the collective are encouraged to contact Maselli. “My dream when I was 19 was to have a million different jobs in a scenario just like this,” Masseli said excitedly. “I’m so happy to live in Rockaway. This could never have happened in Willamsburg.” While Maselli is unsure of Rockaway Summer’s ever-changing future, she can take solace in the words of an aforementioned great poet: “The strongest and sweetest songs yet remain to be sung.”

SURFIN’ ROCKAWAY If you know a young surfer looking for some competition, look no more! The Rockaway Beach Surfers Association, along with community partners, will be presenting the 2015 New York City Youth Surfing Championships, taking place at the main surfing beach on Beach 90th Street. A series of four scheduled contests will determine the winners. The championships are open to surfers ages 16 and under and will be broken up into four age categories. The scheduling

contests, along with their presenting sponsors are as follows: ■ Uma’s and Share the Stoke Foundation presents Hammerhead on August 15 ■ Gotham Surf Club presents Tiger Shark on September 5 ■ Local’s Surf School presents Mako Shark on September 26 ■ St. James Clothing presents the finals, Great White on October 10, with an after party and awards ceremony to follow

Steve Belson Memorial Festivities on Saturday There’s no better way to celebrate a Rockaway hero than doing what he loved best. In its 14th year, the Steve Belson Memorial Swim and Music Festival will take place on Saturday, August 1. Firefighter Steve Belson, 51, died when the World Trace Center collapsed on September 11, 2001. Ever since, Rockaway has paid tribute to Belson with a festival celebrating his life and his love for the water. Belson was a lifeguard for ten years and an avid surfer. On Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m., all are welcome to participate in a half-mile ocean swim starting at Beach 92nd Street, which has since been renamed “Bell’s Beach.” That morning, the winners of the Steve Belson Memorial Scholarship Fund College incentive award

will be announced. Winners of the $1,000 scholarship are all Rockaway lifeguards, like Belson was. Each year, lifeguards who are attending college are welcome to fill out an application, explaining why they deserve the scholarship. The festivities will continue during the evening at the Bungalow Bar, starting with a performance by The Squid Trio at 7 p.m. The Lustre Kings will perform at 8 p.m. and Bill Kirchen and John Tichy, of Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, will finish the night with a performance at 9 p.m. Those looking to attend the party are asked to make a $20 donation, which goes towards the Scholarship Fund. Limited edition t-shirts will also be on sale.

You just never know when and where Rockaway Times T-shirts will be spotted. The Times T looked pretty darn good in Cartenga, Colombia as Laure Feris rocked the T. The Family Benson had a reunion (and did some test tasting) and donned the appropriate shirts. Bill Dickesheid was recuperating in a shirt that doctors say promotes healing! And Doug MacLeod made sure people on his cruise ship knew where he was from! Rock the T!

Are you soft or hard, fast or slow, strong or weak, happy or sad, rigid or flexible? So many different traits within us, good and bad, and yet how do you find the balance? Most people focus on their positive, stronger attributes and not so much on their weaker ones. There needs to be a balance of both yin (gentle) and yang (strong, muscular). Too much yin makes us too mellow and non-motivated, too much yang hardens and perhaps could injure us. So how do you bring the yin and yang into a comfortable balance? For me spinning at Rockaway Gliders is yang but oh so good for the body and mind. The instructors make you feel strong, resilient and competitive. Coming from a competitive background, I love this. They strengthen and make you strong and powerful. The fitness classes are top notch. All the instructors are highly qualified and they have a great community. Coming from the yoga community at Ocean Bliss Yoga, I tend to be mellow and have the yin in my body and mind. I also try to balance my classes with yang. But the key word is balance. This was not always the case, in my earlier days I was a triathlete: swimmer, runner and biker. I loved to compete and it made me feel powerful to be stronger and faster. My natural being was to be competitive. I was yang - strong and fast and not so gentle. However, I have since learned that yin needs to be in one’s life. One should strive to be

flexible and strong. Perhaps coming out of your comfort zone and going to the other side. You will be pleasantly surprised on how this makes you feel. You will not lose your edge; you will gain, mentally and physically. Balance how you live, eat and drink. Do not go on diets that are strict and unbalanced. Choose a lifestyle that works every day, cheating once in a while and not feeling guilty. Eat healthy and be aware of what goes into your body on a daily basis. Drink in moderation and drink lots of water- it’s free and great for your metabolism. Do not take artificial supplements. They are not natural and you do not know the future side effects. Yin is not the norm in our society; yang is more natural and we see it every day. To be yin is a gift and for some it is quite natural. For others, we have to work at being gentle. Practice being yin. Do something totally out of your comfort zone and then do it again. Yang is easy; yin is a work of art and a slow process of balancing your energy. When you meet a yin person, embrace her/him and soak up all of the goodness. It is a daily practice of balancing your life with gentle and strong. When you come into balance, you are full of bliss and happiness! Personally, I am still working on the balance and continue to strive for equanimity in both. Work towards balance in everything you do and your yin and yang will be in perfect harmony.

The New Year isn’t the only time to get started on a new adventure. In a beach community like Rockaway, the time is now. Summer is going by quickly, but several new places are looking to get in their last licks and are counting on the tail end of summer to launch their new endeavors. The Comm(Unity) House is coming to 101-19 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The former Irish Circle building has been transformed into a gastropub, or a bar/restaurant with high quality food and drinks, at reasonable prices. The inside has been redone and a new sign has been added to the front. In August, the transformation will be revealed. The Comm(Unity) House, owned by locals, Kelley Brooke and the Joseph family, will be a place for the community to gather for good food, drinks, music and more. After the initial opening of the bar/restaurant portion, the owners will start to incorporate a bakery, plus rentable rooms above the building. The Comm(Unity) House will have a soft opening starting Monday, August 3, for staff practice, and the grand opening, which will include DJ music at night, will be Friday, August 7. There will be a band and a DJ on Saturday, August 8 and starting on Sunday, August 9, and every Sunday after, there will be Live Band Karaoke from 4 to 7 p.m., in which people can sing karaoke with an actual band. Rockaway’s little slice of tropical paradise is also opening at 189 Beach 96th Street. The Palms, a cultural event space donned with real palm trees from Miami, will officially be open to the public on Friday, July 31. David Selig, former co-owner of Rockaway Taco, has partnered with MP Shift to develop a new brainchild, which is coming to life. “Rockaway is the most fertile ground for creativity in NYC, Selig said. “You throw out the seed of an idea and it quickly takes hold on Rockaway’s peninsula. Ultimately, this is a reflection of how ready Rockaway is for posi-

tive change after many challenging years. The 5,000 square-foot space will be able to accommodate 200 people and it will host several events and vendors. Guests will be able to take a mud bath before they take a dip in the ocean at Frank Traynor’s The Nothing Mud Bath & Seltzer house. Guests will also be able to check out Topless on weekends, a contemporary art gallery run by Brent Birnbaum and Jenni Crain. Want to do some shopping? Check out Feather or The Notion, open Thursdays through Mondays. Feather, from stylists Seble Maaza and Maria Ines Prieto, features independent New York clothing and beachware, plus home goods made with beautiful fabrics and quality craftsmanship. The Notion, by fashion-forward DJ Mae Kwok, will feature a beach appropriate mix of contemporary clothing, swimwear, surf gear, high-quality active-wear and lifestyle goods. Pure Brazilian and chef Fernando Aciar will present OCAFE Coco Shack, serving up coconut drinks and snacks at The Palms. Across the street The Summer Shift will continue its series of rotating chefs serving various Latin American treats. The Palms will also be home to pop-up shop, Dashwood, New York’s only independent bookstore dedicated to photography. Several events will also take place at The Palms like “Grilling Under the Palms, a dinner series featuring chefs like Rockaway’s own Whitney Aycock, Camille Becerra of Navy and more. On Sundays, a series of movies, curated by actress, Greta Gerwig will be shown. There will also be yoga and surf lessons, plus various music events. The Palms will be open Tuesdays though Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays through Mondays. For the event schedule and more information, check out www.thepalmsrockaway. com. This photo postcard gives us a vintage look at the Arverne-Edgemere beachfront in 1918. There were dozens of hotels and rooming houses in these areas where living quarters could be rented for a day, a week or the entire summer season. Frequent storms ravished the beachfront. The storm of 1914 destroyed and washed away

the elevated boardwalk which ran in front of these bathhouses at the foot of Bch. 62nd Street. The great storm of 1920 took these bathhouses and did much damage to the hotels in this view. Beach erosion was severe, and it wasn’t long before the city took the beachfront in order to rebuild the regions finest shorefront complete with a new boardwalk…until “Sandy” came along.

It’s On! - RBSA Youth Surf Championships So the very first in a series of surf contests for our Rockaway kids will happen on August 15 at the main jetty, this one sponsored by UMA’s Restaurant and Share The Stoke Foundation. This whole series is proudly brought together by the Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association with main sponsors UMA’s, Gotham Surf Club, St James Clothing, Local’s Surf School, Share the Stoke Foundation, Boarders and the United Way. There is no other association/ group that has a local surfing league to invest in their youth, but

now we do! This brand new RBSA surf series is dedicated to improving our prized youth into the realm of competitive surfing. The scope of local talent here on our peninsula is fantastic, but there is always room for improvement. With a dedicated surf series, this can only benefit the kids to learn deeper skill sets, such as competing smarter in a heat and focusing on the commitment in their turns to get maximum points. The contest series takes place on the following dates, you’ve got to be in it to win it!

Jimmy Brady is the Contest Director. A fantastic meeting last Thursday at the Rockaway Beach Surf

Club. We had two notable visitors with Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblyman Phillip Goldfeder. Senator Addabbo spoke about the ongoing fight for surfing beach expansion and how essential it is for safety purposes. Mr Addabbo was instrumentally involved in the very first legal surfing beach for New York City back in 2005, taking the effort to the state level by changing the Health Code. He had some great comments on how he will work with the RBSA to get the next surfing beach expansion solidified for 2016, if not sooner. I also had a great meeting with Assemblyman Goldfeder and his team. They too are working closely with the RBSA and strategizing with the Parks Department on a possible pilot program. More news on this as it comes to light Another topic that was raised was continued boogie boarding issues. We brought this up to the Rockaway Beach Civic and to Parks Department attention, but nothing definitive has been released. The new rule that was applauded starting this season: “Boogie boarding is allowed at all surfing beaches, it is allowed at swim beaches based on Lifeguards decision. Seems to be that the Green shirts (PEP) differ in opinion, by pulling boogie boarders out of the surf beach. How hard is it to get this right?

Rockaway Was Swinging By Sheneca Sharpe

They say Rockaway had a glorious past. Well, on Saturday, July 25, Low Tide at the Beach 97th Street concession turned back the clock for a glorious night of Swing Dance. Now in its fourth year, this fun night has become a great beachfront tradition. The goal is pretty simple: introduce some old time music with swing dancing so people can have a great time. It works! The event was hosted by Vanessa Maldonado who has seen the event evolve and grow each year, from the amount of people who come to the event to the variety of different bands. Maldonado has even noticed

regulars who have been here for the event since the beginning. “I have people who come every year and when they can’t make it, they’re pretty upset! said Maldonado, laughing. The Saturday event started with a beginners dance lesson, learning the Charleston with the professional dancers, Lily Bayrock and Michael Duke. It started with a small group of people and as the lesson progressed more and more people got comfortable with learning the dance. The lesson wasn’t about being perfect, but about just having fun and hopefully learning something during the lesson. The lesson was filled with

laughs and mistakes learning the Charleston, but nobody cared because it was a good time. After the lesson concluded, it was time for Tamar Korn and A Kornucopia to perform. This was a band that Maldonado wanted from day one, so when they performed she was extremely excited for people to hear Tamar Korn’s beautiful voice and the band. The band decided to play some old school music and that’s when the party really began. As soon as the band performed its first song the dance floor was packed. Even people off the dance floor were dancing to the music. It was just an amazing evening that people won’t forget for a while. Another thing that was a nice touch was that Brandon Perdomo, a photographer, took photos of people as a gift which you were able to receive in a couple of days after the event, so that people can remember the evening. The Beach Swing Party was an amazing event that I was so happy to be a part of. It showed how simple music and dance can be, how it can bring a community together for just one evening. (Sheneca Sharpe is a recent graduate of Rockaway Park High School. She will be attending SUNY-Fredonia in the fall).

An Amazing Finn Fest By John Sica and Nonie Finn

This is a story of two amazing people. Two amazing friends whose paths crossed once again on July 18 at the Seventh Annual Finn Fest in Island Park, Nora Finn

and Brian Monaghan. Hundreds of Rockaway residents knew Brian and thousands have heard his music through the years as had been documented in this and other local papers following his sudden death

in May. Nora, had a lot in common with Brian--they are musicians, retired members of the NYPD, parents, “beach people” and lovers of life. This year Nora decided to honor Brian at her annual event called Finn Fest. The Dorothy Finn Foundation was founded by Nora in 2009 in memory of her mother who spent her life helping animal rescue groups and teaching dance to underprivileged and mentally disabled children. She left Nora some money and so after she died Nora thought it would be great to keep her name alive and also serve a purpose by raising money for those causes dear to her heart. It also allowed her to produce a music festival, which was always a dream of hers. Nora will tell you the first year was a spectacular failure financially and that would have made her mother quite annoyed, as she was very frugal. But Nora thrives under pressure and challenges. She has since worked out the kinks and it has proven to be a successful event. Nora credits her mother with her resolve. “My mother was an exceptional women of deep insight and compassion. She had unwavering faith and not only enabled me to live a life way beyond my dreams, she gave me an unending priceless gift of spirituality and faith.” A side

note of interest is Dorothy Finn’s brother was the late William Hickey, an acting teacher and popular character actor who appeared in over 50 movies. He was nominated for an Academy Award after appearing along side Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner in Prizzi’s Honor. We see him each year at Christmas time as Uncle Lewis in the movie Christmas Vacation. So this year when Brian passed away from a sudden heart attack less than two months from Finn Fest, Nora decided to honor Brian and help his family, his wife Jenny and sons, Seamus and Jack. The outpouring of support was unprecedented. It was estimated that over 700 people attended this year’s event. It was by far the biggest turnout because of Brian. Last Finn Fest’s count was about 450 people. For the first time since Finn Fest started, Nora ran a free bus from The Bungalow Bar in Rockaway because Rockaway was a big a part of Brian’s life. Long Beach and Rockaway are sibling towns only separated by a bridge. Ironically that bridge became Brian Monaghan. He brought Rockaway and Long Beach together with his music and friendship. This year there was an unprecedented outpouring of love and wanting to pay tribute to Brian. A Continued on page 31

About 10 percent of the US population reports that they are allergic to penicillin. Sometimes this presents a problem to the prescriber in deciding which antibiotic to use to treat an infection. Prevailing wisdom indicated that if a patient was penicillin allergic, then there was a significant possibility (up to 15 percent) that he or she would be allergic to other penicillin-related drugs like cephalosporins (i.e. Keflex). Recent studies have begun to change the prevailing wisdom. There are different types of drug allergies. Sudden, severe anaphylactic reactions which occur about one hour after a dose is given and are life-threatening (throat closure, breathing difficulty) are thankfully rare, occurring in about 0.02 – 0.04 percent of penicillin allergies. Other allergic reactions like a rash may occur days to weeks after the drug is taken. Additionally, some viral and bacterial infections may cause a rash, which people may mistake for an allergic reaction to an antibiotic they are taking. An upset stomach or diarrhea while taking an antibiotic is not an allergic reaction to it, but rather a side effect of the medication. It turns out that of the 10 percent of people reporting a penicillin allergy, 90 percent turn out to not be allergic to it. This is determined by skin testing performed by an allergist. In addition, sensitivity to penicillin decreases over time with 50 percent of patients losing their sensitivity within five years and 80 percent after 10 years.

When a patient reports an allergy to penicillin it is important to obtain this information: what are the details of the reaction (route of administration, length of dose, time between dosage and reaction), how long ago did it occur, how was it treated and what was the outcome, what was the indication for penicillin and have you tolerated other forms of penicillin like aminopenicillins (Amoxicillin, Ampicillin) or cephalosporins? If penicillin must be used a patient can see an allergist for skin testing and desensitization. Penicillin is the only antibiotic for which skin testing is reliable. Back to prevailing wisdom – cross-reactivity with cephalosporins is only three percent, not 15 percent, and with aminopenicillins less than two percent although someone reporting a severe penicillin allergy should still undergo skin testing by an allergist before taking a cephalosporin. Crossreactivity between cephalosporins and aminopenicillins is 10 to 40 percent so someone allergic to Amoxicillin should avoid drugs like Keflex (cephalexin). Penicillin, despite its age, remains an important weapon in our infectious disease armamentarium, one of the main reasons being it does not contribute to antibiotic drug resistance and it’s cheap. Finn Fest

Continued from page 27

total of eight bands performed as well as a solo act at the front gate. Nora had to add another area to accommodate them all and unfortunately we didn’t have room or time for any more. “They would profess to me how Brian inspired them or helped them get started or how he got them gigs and how much they loved him. And none of them asked for any money. I want to specially note and thank Arturo Rivera, a singer/guitarist that happily played at the front gate most of the day. His heart was bigger than his ego and it didn’t stop him from playing even though it wasn’t on a stage. He greeted everyone with music at the front gate,” Nora noted. “Brian would be my opening act each year and not many would be in attendance that early in the day. And he would always chide me and say he wanted a later time slot. Ironically I planned on moving him up this year. Its bittersweet how many people he drew in absentia.” Fittingly this year’s opening act was a trio - Mike Furey, Brian’s brother in law and present day musical partner who plays the cajon (the box). He was joined on stage with Paul McKenzie, guitar/ mandolin player who was Brian’s former musical partner who now leads the band Solshyne who ended and headlined Finn Fest, and Gustavo Rodriguez, a guitarist and vocalist who has an angelic voice that was heard at Brian’s funeral mass, singing one of Brain’s favorite songs, “Into the Mystic.” Breezy Grass is a wildly talented bluegrass band from Rockaway that Nora had always heard about and wanted to book but never got around to it. She met their friend during this past winter at her bar at Hunter Mountain and he had asked her to book them up there. So she booked them for Finn Fest before we lost Brian. Once she dedicated the event to Brian, they were all in and wanted no pay. Nora got lots of help booking the musical acts from Furey, Brian’s bother in law. He turned her onto Gerald Bair, another popular Rockaway lifelong singer songwriter who wanted to perform, as well as the Dave Kellan Band. Dave has rocked the country, spanning coast to coast. The band has shared the Salt River Blues Festival stage with the likes of blues greats Joe Bonamassa and Indigenous. Dave won Mid-Michigan Idol from a Citadel/Epic Records contest in 2002, which led to him opening for various national acts such as Uncle Kracker and Bowling for Soup. In 2005, he also won

Page 31

THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2015

FOUR Review Awards (Best Solo Artist, Blues Band Deserving Wider Recognition, Best Blues Songwriter and Best Rock Songwriter) at the Review ceremonies in Saginaw, Michigan and in 2006 he won Best Male Vocalist, Guitarist, Songwriter and Instrumentalist. Dave has won 20+ awards from Review Magazine. Dave now plays mostly solo in many of the local bars and Brian used to invite him up on stage to play. This past winter, Brian played at the new German bar, Das Biergarten in East Atlantic Beach and it also happened to be his 50th birthday. Nora was there and Dave got up and played with Brian. He was very fond of Brian and when he asked to play Finn Fest, Nora thought he meant solo but his whole band came, horns and all. And that was very nice of him to treat Brian’s crowd to that experience. Especially on a Saturday night, for musicians to give up a Saturday night gig for no pay is rare, and I’m not sure if the entire band knew Brian but they all showed up. Breakaway with Sweet Susie are regular Finn Fest performers that were inducted into the NY Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. They are local to Island Park and appear all around the country in various top rated music festivals. Past appearances include being the opening band for The Doobie Brothers and Chicago at the Nikon Jones Beach Theater. This is the 7th Finn Fest Nora has organized. In 2014 she took a year off and wasn’t sure if she was going to do it again, but as she tells it, “Serendipity being what it is, I decided that because Charlie my 9-year-old son was playing keyboard and singing in a band organized by his music teacher Ben Metzger, I wanted to give him a memorable experience of performing in that type of venue.” Nora wrote a song for Brian and performed it that day at Finn Fest. It was a rough-cut version but she wanted to toast and remember him the good old-fashioned Irish way. The words are below. She hopes to record it soon. Let’s Remember Monaghan

His punchline was always our favorite part

Let’s remember Monaghan

It was beers and cheers and now a broken heart

The wind in the willow stopped playing tea for two

All the songs all the gigs and the chords and riffs

Cause it didn’t turn out as it was planned

His spirit will be missed Chorus: Raise your glass, Raise your glass Raise your glass to a proud Irishman Raise your glass, Raise your glass

Brian

And we know that he’s out there playing somewhere In that heart of gold band Nora concluded, “Brian Monaghan was larger than life and funnier and more quick witted than anyone I know. A doting family man, a proud Irish cop and a great friend. He had a big heart and performed at numerous charitable events. I was honored to be able to host Finn Fest in his name.”

Smarter Transportation: Lives At Stake By Dr. Dennis Graham Ph.D. NP and Catherine Graham RN MSN

New York City’s transportation policy focuses on reducing the number of pedestrian and traffic deaths but overlooks impact of urban traffic on surviving a heart attack or other medical emergency. The recently released Department of Health 2013 mortality report shows Rockaway has the highest mortality for heart disease in NYC. The nearest high-level emergency cardiac center (percutaneous interventional cardiac [PICC] care) is 14.9 miles away. Our review of research and NYC data shows the greater the distance in miles to PICC correlates to increased mortality (see table below). Our organization met with the Queens DOT over a year ago. We recommended that the implementation of an addition to the present traffic control system, traffic light pre-emption (TLP). TLP would decrease the time for the sickest patients to access LITC (low income taxpayer clinics) or PICC. The DOT promised action but the geographic barriers to emergency medical care for residents of the Rockaways were largely ignored. After Hurricane Sandy the DOT upgraded all of Rockaway, Broad Channel and Howard Beach traffic light control devices using Advanced Solid State Traffic Controllers (ATSC). The ATSC system is used in “Midtown in Motion “ to monitor, control traffic flow and remotely smooth transit of midtown buses. The DOT has never proposed using the update traffic light technology to help speed ambulances from Rockaway to PICC. What needs to happen? We are proposing a pilot study for FDNY

to notify the DOT that a lifethreatening emergency transport (Priority Level 1-3) is in progress. The traffic engineers at DOT headquarters could remotely follow ambulance routes using GPS and cameras, using the updated ATSC system to change traffic lights and reroute to improve time to the hospital. Many other areas in NYC have high cardiac related mortality and prolonged distances to advanced emergency care. These other neighborhoods need ATSC traffic light technology. The Rockaways have this new technology already installed, and it needs to be utilized to “save a life. We have requested, using the Freedom of Information Act, the FDNY data for the Rockaways including the response time and the travel time to the emergency room in all priority calls. This data will help evaluate any improvement in transit time to emergency heart attack care in our proposed pilot. Rockaway has never had a PICC center and for the last decade has led NYC in mortality from heart disease. Our only remaining hospital has made no plans to open a PICC center. The Rockaway community needs the DOH, DOT and the Mayor’s office to respond to this lack of proximal life-saving emergency care. Saving A Life: Technology Assisted Health Care Delivery is a not-for-profit established by Rockaway residents after Hurricane Sandy to study the use of technology to improve healthcare delivery. battery is fully charged before storing. (4) When storing air tools or tools that need to be lubricated, always look for a metal toolbox to store them in. Some plastics don’t react well to lubricants. Make sure you freshly lubricate these tools prior to storing for long periods. (5)Extension cords are another concern. We all heard of a tire on a car having dry rot, the same can happen to extension cords. When an extension cord is stored for long periods in the wrong way, they become stiff and the outer insulation of the cord can crack. To prevent this, pick up a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. Wrap up your cords and store them in the bucket. You will find they will last a lot longer. (6) Larger tools like a miter box or bench top drill press need to be protected as well. Simply placing a plastic bag over them or covering them will help them to last longer. Remember just as your home is an investment, so are the tools you maintain it with.

Pan Fried Chicken Breasts By Sharon Feldman Courtesy of Allrecipes.com First you pan fry, and then you bake. It’s the most tender, moist chicken you will ever try.

Ingredients:

2 cups flour 1 tablespoon tarragon 2 tablespoons salt 1 tablespoon ground ginger 2 tablespoons ground black pepper 1 tablespoon dry mustard powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dry oregano 1 egg ¼ cup milk 8 (6 ounces) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves ½ cup vegetable oil

Directions:

Stir together flour, salt, ginger, pepper, mustard powder, thyme,

garlic powder and oregano in a shallow bowl until well blended. Beat the egg together with the milk until smooth in a bowl. Dredge the chicken breasts in flour mixture, shake off excess, and then dip in egg and again in flour. Set breasts to rest for 10 minutes. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Heat the vegetable oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Dredge the chicken breasts in the flour again, and shake off excess. Brown the chicken in the hot oil until golden brown on both sides. Place onto a baking sheet, and bake in pre-heated over until the chicken is no longer pink in the center, 2030 minutes. ++Note: You can use chicken thighs. Make sure to pound them to ¼” . Thighs never dry out. You might like this better.

One of the main things every Do It Yourselfer needs to consider is tools. The right tool for the job can make all the difference. So first thing is to research your project and the tools needed to do it. Then comes the task of storing your tools until you need them again. As a DIYer working out of your basement or garage, you may find that storing your tools for long periods of time could do irreparable damage and corrosion to your tools. Here are a few tips that may help. (1) Keep your tools off the floor and spray a mist of WD-40 over metal parts of hand tools to help prevent corrosion. Corrosion will destroy motors and gears in power tools and rust hand tools. (2) Store your tools in a proper toolbox that won’t allow humidity to affect the tools. Remember even dust holds moisture and accelerates corrosion of tools, so keeping them in a metal or plastic toolbox will prolong the life of your tools. (3) When storing your batteryoperated tools, always remove the battery and always make sure the

New Beginning For End of The A By Lizzy Hurley-Wright Memorial Day Weekend, 2014 Beth Waytowich and Tara McKiernan put the key in the ignition of a renovated pool supply truck and launched Rockaway’s first mobile boutique. By the end of this summer they will turn the key to open a brick and mortar boutique café! The new shop will be opening at 437 Beach 129th Street in Belle Harbor, NY. It is an 800sq foot space, a big change from the inside of their truck. The ladies decided to call it a boutique café in the hopes that down the road they will be able to add coffee and tea to the End of the A experience customers will have while shopping. For now they will be selling delicious vegan baked goods from another Rockaway entrepreneur, Jaime Witkowski Hausler, creator of Balanced Bella. Last winter, Beth and Tara opened a “Pop-Up Shop” in DUMBO then in April they took the truck to Manhattan where the Bungalow Bar opened a “Pop-Up Restaurant” at the Refinery Hotel, located in Manhattan’s Garment District. While they enjoyed bringing their truck to other communities Waytowich says, “Home is where the heart is, and for us that’s Rockaway.” Waytowich and McKiernan discussed the risks of opening a permanent shop, but hope that their big risks will lead to big rewards, for both them, and the community they grew up in and love. The boutique café will offer more options for customers, including men and children’s wares as well. Currently the truck primarily focuses on women’s fashion and accessories. Loyal customers of the truck asked and shall also receive, not one, but two dressing

rooms! As one can imagine, trying a romper on while on the inside of a truck parked near a concession stand is not exactly conducive! The boutique will also be a place for local artists to display their work, something McKiernan feels is very important to the Rockaway community that is home to so many talented and budding artists. Everything sold on the truck is under $100, the boutique will offer a few higher end items. McKiernan says, “Opening a permanent shop was always something Beth and I wanted to do, we worked it into the original business plan before we even bought the truck. We have had such a great response from the community, it was just time to take the plunge.” McKiernan says she has passed by 437 Beach 129th Street since Superstorm Sandy and has always loved the spot. She was very pleased that it was still available when they were ready and able to sign the lease. Social media has played a big part in the success of End of the A. The ladies use Facebook and Instagram to say where the truck will be parked, when new merchandise comes in and when their friends step in to model some of the new clothes. Their website, www.endofthea.com, is also a place where people can shop, read their bio and even locate the truck. End of the A has been featured in Time Out New York, The New York Observer, DNA Info New York, Heart of Queens and of course The Rockaway Times just to name a few. They have even found some of their vendors and designers via social media. This season, the truck has been spending a lot of time down at the Riis Park Beach Bazaar and they Continued on next page

Diary Of A Fat Man No Pain - No Gain Why Can’t I Exercise ? By Bruce Bernfeld

I knew it would happen. I have been attempting to put it on the back burner for a while but it is starting to become more difficult. People have begun to ask me: “Do you exercise? People I just met offer advice: “You have to exercise. To begin with, I don’t react well to “you have to about anything! I just can’t (that should really read “won’t “) start. For a guy who owns FIVE recliners, exercise has never been an integral part of my life. In fact, it has never been an “anything “ part of my life. There are two simultaneous dynamics taking place here. One is my reaction to advice. People used to beseech me to lose weight. Now that I am losing weight, they have to switch and beseech me to do something else. And when I start exercising they are going to find something else to hassle me about (I have a feeling it’s going to be: “Why don’t you shave your beard... you will look so much better now that you’ve lost weight! WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? Do they really care what I look like? WHY? My theory is that they are, in fact, talking to themselves. But, that’s a discussion is for another time (Maybe when I start writing my Psychology Today column for this paper). So keeping talking folks. But please realize that just like I didn’t start my new healthy lifestyle eating habits until I was good and ready, I won’t start exercising until I’m good and ready, too! I don’t want to appear too mean. I do appreciate the advice but...I’m not certain it is working!! Maybe exercise is not good for you!! Have you ever thought of

that? Did you ever see what someone who has just finished a marathon looks like? How about a triathlon? They look like they are about to die! How many runners do you know who have not had problems with their feet or knees? I hear you saying that I don’t have to be an ultra athlete to exercise. “Just walk a mile or two or go on the treadmill or stationary bike you say? I may get healthier, but did you know that gym members per capita die of boredom at a 50 percent greater rate than those that just sit in a recliner!! In a recliner one can play with their phone or take a little nap. Try that on a treadmill!! So ... Now you see what I am up against. It must all boil down to LAZINESS!! How do I overcome this very bad trait I have? I guess I just have to do it! But do what? My instincts say jump right in and do power work outs, but my mind says start slow. I think I’ll start walking. First around the block, then gradually increasing the distance. Let’s see how I do at that. But, if I run into any of you and you start in on my beard...watch out. I want to thank you all for reading this column. I just decided to walk while I was writing this today!! I’ll report back on my progress!! (Hey, Eileen here... Bruce just got up and walked around the block. How did you get him to do that? I’ve been trying for years!!!)

are hoping that some of their new customers will continue to venture down to Rockaway in the fall and winter months, while the truck is having some R&R (it will be back on the road during the warmer months in addition to the store), to check out their new spot and continue to enjoy the great food options Rockaway has to offer. Waytowich and McKiernan want their new shop to be part of the everevolving Rockaway Renaissance. The new shop has a lot of work that still needs to be done. With the dedicated help and talents of McKiernan’s boyfriend, Frankie Wlazlowski, and her father, Brendan McKiernan, the ladies think the shop will be just to their liking. Frankie and Brendan are building many of the stands, shelves, and unique displays that the shop will house. Of course the ladies plan on incorporating their very popular, pink truck color into the new store. They will also keep with the beach theme, “It’s Rockaway, I feel like you have to have that nice, clean, beach feel. We want to

keep with the community vibes.â€? says McKiernan. There will also be some slight changes to the logo that will don the storefront. The truck currently says, “End of the A, The Rockaway Beach Mobile Boutique,â€? some changes had to be made seeing how the store will not be mobile. The “End of the Aâ€? will be in block letters with a script, “boutique cafĂŠâ€? underneath. There are two things Waytowich and McKiernan are very passionate about, fashion and their community. They are hoping their shop will get as much support and love as the truck has gotten and breathe new life into the community. They will hire locals to work in the store. Waytowich hopes that the shop will be, “A place where everyone knows your name, not to be cute. Just a spot where you want to be and want to spend time and buy something that makes you feel good.â€? The community has been there each time the End of the A ladies have turned a key and rode into their new chapter and they anxiously await the next stop!

Inaccessible, Inexcusable There seems to be a problem here. There’s a big, beautiful access mat on Beach 118th Street, which would be perfect for a person in a wheelchair, looking to spend a day on the beach. However, the mat doesn’t reach the concrete, deeming it useless to a handicap beachgoer. This is just one of several beach mats that seem to have this problem. We reached out to the Parks Department to see if they plan to rectify this situation PHOTO BY DOUGLAS MACLEOD

and their response was a bit limp. “The ramp in the photo is for vehicular access, for operations or emergency vehicles. It was never intended as an ADA accessible ramp. There is an accessible ramp at Beach 116th Street, Parks said. So if you’re handicapped and live on Beach 118th, please ignore the perfectly fine unreachable ramp, five feet in front of you and head two blocks down to join the DFD crowds.

Summer’s Just Starting New Places Coming in For the Last Licks of Summer

Continued fron page 18

100st Street, the Rockaway Beach Golf Club will open soon. This new venture will offer virtual golf and a sports bar atmosphere for the whole family. Among the partners are coowners of Boarders Surf Shop, Steve and Christian Stathis. Look for more details in The Rockaway Times once the official opening date is set. Rockaway will finally be getting a taste of frozen yogurt. Coastal Frozen Yogurt, on Beach 109th Street, will be the first self-serve frozen yogurt place on the peninsula and is expected to open as soon as this upcoming weekend. At the store owned by the Shannon family, customers will be able to choose their flavors and add their own toppings, from plenty of options. As frozen yogurt shops have already proven to be popular in Manhattan and other boroughs, the Shannon family isn’t the only one that thought it would be a good idea for Rockaway. Adding some friendly competition to the mix, locals Kevin Breen and his daughter, Alexandra, are also expected to open a frozen yogurt place called “Surf & Swirl Frozen Yogurt” at 414 Beach 129th

Street. Construction seems to be taking place and no details have been released as of yet, but the Breen family says they’ll be open sometime in August. Surf & Swirl won’t be the only new addition to Beach 129th Street. Mobile boutique, End of the A, is going brick and mortar in a new boutique cafe. Beth Waytowich and Tara McKiernan, owners of the End of the A truck, are finding a stationary home at 437 Beach 129th Street. Being able to move beyond the confines of a truck, the ladies will be adding more items to their inventory at the new shop. From the truck, they have sold mostly women’s clothing, jewelry and other odds and ends for under $100, but with the shop, they plan to add children’s and men’s items and more. The shop will also offer baked goods. The ladies are teaming up with Rockaway entrepreneur, Jaime Witkowski Hausler, who sells vegan goodies under her brand, Balanced Bella. The ladies hope to add tea and coffee to the mix and will feature art by local artists, to give it even more of a café feel. The shop is expected to open at the end of August or the be-

ginning of September. In another possible, but unconfirmed opening, Whitney Aycock of Whit’s End, may finally be launching his bayside burger and beer shop. The Rockaway Times received a press release for The Palms, where Aycock will hold an event, stating that Aycock’s new restaurant would be open on Monday, August 17, but as we go to press, Aycock did not respond to requests to confirm the news. According to a February report by blog-

ger, Rockawayist, the unnamed restaurant was slated to open in April at the Seaway Marina at 7246 Thursby Avenue. The bayside location will primarily cater to the boaters in the marina, but all are welcome. Aycock has become a hit at his current pizza shop, Whit’s End at 97-14 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, where he serves up artisanal pizza pies, high-quality burgers and steak and occasionally shark, which is caught in local waters.

AHOY ROCKAWAY ! Water Temperature: 78*F - Rockaway Park (Jamaica bay).

The Rockaway Cadets took on the Forest Hills Bombers in Forest Hills in a travel baseball tournament last weekend. The 9U team, comprised of nine-year-olds, played an exciting game. Craig Zuckerman, of the Forest Hills Bombers, pitched

three innings, leaving with a lead of 4-2. Pitcher Nicholas Marino, of the Rockaway Cadets, struck out the next two players and caught a difficult foul ball. The game was a nail biter, with the final score of 7-6 in favor of the Bombers.

Well anglers (and non-anglers), it’s the sizzling days of July that are upon us and it really does feel like summertime in Rockaway! The heat is on and so is the humidity. It’s the time of year that when you’re unwrapping a popsicle, you suddenly stop and think that it’s the greatest invention that mankind has ever made (next to air conditioning). Last week’s weather was hot and sticky. There was a cooling trend with less humidity, but that ended towards Friday. Saturday was hot and Sunday was even warmer, but by mid-day the breeze had picked up, and it had increased significantly towards evening. The strong breeze gave some welcomed relief to the Rockaway and Broad Channel area. This week’s forecast is for even WARMER weather, it’s a good thing that they put a COOL beach in Rockaway! If you can’t get down to the beach, you can still get down to the bay and get a line in the water. It’s always cooler near the water, so pack a lunch (and your cooler) and go fishing. Fishing in Rockaway is fun because you never know what might show up. You can go on a party boat, you can fish from the sea wall, or at one of the three bridges (Cross Bay Bridge, Marine Parkway Bridge, MTA R/R Bridge) or the many jetties along the beach. Rockaway is a great place to go fishing because large game fish can (and do) often sneak up into the back bays and creeks of the area hunting for food (espe-

cially at night). Check with your local bait and tackle shop to find out what bait and tides they are feeding on. The hot weather has kept many people inside in the A/C, or searching for a cool sea breeze down at the beach. Bernie Matzen was drifting between Beach 8th Street and the Lido golf course (on the inside) and he reports that the fluke were there, but they were undersized. Heavy boat traffic and party boats were fishing the back bays this weekend. Bern reported that it’s tough to maneuver a good drift for fluke when it get’s crowded in the back creeks and bays like that. “Everybody wants to bring home a fish for dinner. This is typical for July as the fish move into the back. Bern took aboard two fluke that were 17.5 long. Bern also returned the two fluke as they were under-sized. We checked in with Tom at Wave Service Station Bait and Tackle: Tom reports slow activity along the sea wall and around the shop’s vicinity. Big Ron’s Bait and Tackle: Big Ron’s reports that the typical mid July fishing has slowed down a bit for fluke. Porgies are in. Local anglers report that the fishing in the area has been more productive at night. Well, that’s it anglers. I wish that the fishing report was better, but then it wouldn’t be a “fishing report, it would be a “fish story. Let’s hope for better results next week, and remember to ALWAYS throw the “small ones back, and to keep ONLY what you can eat.

Rockaway Little League Major Boys Finish Second In Sectional Tournament Rockaway Little League’s (RLL) Major Boys All-Star team lost to Great Kills Little League (GKLL) of Staten Island in the Section Three South finals. RLL finished the year with their fourth consecutive District 27 Championship and two thrilling sectional tournament victories that earned them second place in Section Three South. Coming into the sectional tournament, GKLL was the clear-cut favorite. The Staten Islanders lived up to their billing by posting two lop-sided victories without surrendering a run. That scoreless streak was snapped by the first batter in the finals, Rockaway’s Ian Byrne, who cracked a leadoff home run. RLL stretched the lead to 2-0 when Tom Resker crossed the plate but GKLL answered in impressive fashion in the bottom of the frame. Powered by two two-run homers, GKLL scored five runs. Mike McManus closed the gap to 5-3 with a leadoff home run in the second inning. GKLL answered with an unearned run off of James Resker to make it 6-3 after two. The third inning spelled doom for RLL. GKLL plated two with a couple of infield hits, the second of which hit off James Resker’s pitching hand, forcing him from the mound. Matt Melfi greeted Rockaway’s relief pitcher with a grand slam. The next inning, John Schardt’s threerun shot ended the game in favor of Great Kills. RLL made it to the sectional finals with a dramatic, come-frombehind win over Throggs Neck Litte League (TNLL). RLL trailed 8-3 late in the game but rallied with two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to take a 10-8 lead. They then withstood a last ditch rally from TNLL and ended the game with the tying run on base and the winning run at bat. RLL starting pitcher Jason Sebastiano got through the home first with the help of his defense as James Resker made a sliding catch of a hot line drive to left. Af-

ter a base on balls and wild pitch, shortstop Byrne started a neat sixthree-five double play, throwing to first to McManus who then fired to third base where Tom Resker applied the tag. RLL struck first in the top of the second as James Agoglia reached on an error. Daniel Green beat out an infield hit and stole second base. James Resker singled up the middle to plate Agoglia and Green. After Tom Resker walked, Philly Benoit stroked another hit into center to score the third run.

The lead seemed safe as Sebastiano retired two batters after a leadoff walk. But after two more walks, TNLL pinch hitter Dominick Pesca hit a grand slam home run over the centerfield fence to give Throggs Neck a 4-3 lead. Things got worse for RLL in the third inning. Joe Martino hit another homer for TNLL. A collection of dinks, hits, bad hops, and errors led to three more runs and a commanding 8-3 lead for TNLL. RLL could not withstand any more

rallies by TNLL. Fortunately, Byrne came in to pitch and shut down the Bronx boys the rest of the way. RLL began to fight their way back into the game in the fifth when TNLL opened the door for them with fielding mistakes. McManus reached on an error then stole his way to third base. He came home on a wild pitch. Byrne also reached base on an error. After advancing one base on a ground out, he scored on James Resker’s liner to center. With RLL now within 8-5, Byrne pitched a one-two-thee fifth with two strikeouts and a pop up. RLL was feeling they could get back into the game and that feeling was solidified when Benoit led off the last inning with a huge home run over the left field fence. Sebastiano and Billy Reyes singled and Agoglia walked to load the bases. McManus walked to force in a run and make it 8-7. Byrne grounded into a force as Reyes came in with the tying run. With two outs, two runners in scoring position, and the score tied, James Resker notched two RBIs with a single to center, making the score 10-8. TNLL would not go quietly, however. After putting runners on first and second with one out, Martino, who had homered previously, slammed a high fly to deep center that had the TNLL crowd cheering. But centerfielder James Resker calmly settled under it a foot in front of the fence for the second out. The next batter grounded sharply to short where Green adroitly handled a last-second bad hop and flipped to Benoit at second base for the force out and the victory. DIAMOND DUST: Rockaway Little League’s annual Awards Breakfast will be held on November 21. Save the date…There is still time to sign up for NY Premier Baseball’s baseball and softball summer camps that will be held in Ft. Tilden next month.
