Get RoccoStrong! It’s time to get RoccoStrong! Rocco Pisani, a 10-year-old Broad Channel boy who was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year, is challenging people to get RoccoStrong! Rocco is documenting his battle on Instagram (fitnessforlife07) and he recently posted, asking people to take on a fitness challenge of doing 22 pushups, 22 sit ups and 22 squats, filming the whole thing on a timelapse, then sharing it on social media and challenging three other friends or family members to do the same. The effort is being done as a way to raise awareness for leukemia “if I have leukemia and I can do this, you can do this,” Rocco said in a video before dominating each move of the challenge.
ULRICH WORKS WITH NYPD TO ALLEVIATE PARKING ISSUES Another summer, more parking problems. With warm weather and people looking to get out of the house, Rockaway has become a hotspot for traffic and the ongoing parking challenge. Drivers have resorted to parking in illegal spots such as on the south side of Shore Front Parkway, under the Rockaway Freeway, on the sidewalk of the lot on Beach 95th Street, in front of driveways and even by hiding fire hydrants with traffic cones to take up a spot by them. Councilman Eric Ulrich recently took to social media to express he’s working with the NYPD to alleviate some of the issues. “I just spoke with NYPD Chief of Transportation Nilda Hofmann regarding the plague of illegal parking in Rockaway Beach. Additional traffic enforcement agents will be deployed to the Shore Front Parkway area starting today,” Ulrich
posted on Wednesday. “Blocking fire hydrants, driveways, no standing zones and emergency access points is never acceptable. John Cori also brought up the misuse of parking placards. The residents of Rockaway Beach have been dealing with this issue all summer. Enough is enough! Please continue to report illegal parking to 311 and also follow up with my office with any complaints that go unanswered. (718) 318-6411 Ulrich assured constituents that they will start to notice a difference this weekend.

Camp Dune
We understand the need for social distancing, but at the expense of beach protection? NYC Parks has been hard at work enforcing social distancing on crowded beaches this summer, but in some areas, beachgoers are taking it to
extremes by setting up camp for the day on the reinforced dunes, meant to protect the community from potential flooding. A few readers, including one who spent their time volunteering to plant the dunes
in years past, brought this to our attention. After the dunes were formed following Hurricane Sandy, volunteers planted the dunes to grow roots that would make the dunes stronger. Beachgoers are now using these areas to get away from
the crowds but as a result, are causing damage to the plantings. What happened to the fencing that used to protect these dunes? Where is the enforcement? NYC Parks? Photos by Doug McLeod.

BOYLEING POINTS
Silence Is Golden Things don’t have to have context for me to enjoy. If out of the blue, someone said, you want to whine? I’ll give you something to whine about. I’d chuckle. It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Gets me every time. This is sort of a continuation of the column I wrote a few weeks ago about how I feel like I’m in one of those movies where everything’s the same but different, too. That’s why I don’t check in with my siblings
or pretty much anybody else. What’s new? Nothing. How’s everybody? You know, fine. Everybody’s good. After we agree that things suck, there’s not much else to cover. You can’t plan or even talk about planning because everything’s on hold. This Covid stuff is paralyzing. You know how when you’re riding in a car with someone you don’t know all that well? You’ve gotta decide if you’re gonna blabber on about
something just to fill the awkward air or let them have at it. I think I wrote about the time I was riding with someone who felt compelled to read aloud every sign we passed on the highway. When we hit a stretch of highway miles with nothing but trees, she turned inside and read “Honda” off the glove compartment. That one almost made me laugh but things were awkward enough. I was curious to see what she’d read next but I decided to be a topper and read the VIN number off the reflection of the windshield. The 17 random letters and numbers were understandably confusing to her because she couldn’t see the reflection and had no idea what I was saying. “What?” she asked. Which really was game over. I had ignored her reading signs and let her say Exit Twenty Nine (with an emphasis on “South”) without so much as a chin or eyebrow raise. And I didn’t break when she said “Honda.” Now, here she was asking me what I
Page 5 was talking about. I was a conversational wizard. I didn’t reveal my source of the 17 digit and letters code. I just said it’s hard to know if it’s a zero or the letter O. I did not make eye contact. It got quiet again. I spent some time wondering if she was thinking I was some freak. And if she was thinking that, I was ok with it. If she was having such thoughts, they ended when we passed a strip mall where there were all sorts of signs. The reeling off of store names was not as boring as you might think. There was an illuminated sign for Wallpaper but the bottom of one of the “Ls” was dark so she read it to be Wally Popper. (Wali Paper). My facial muscles were strained as I contained a smirk. Most times I can live with quiet. In can be a little weird but if you sense the other person is ok with silence, zoning out is fine. There’s nothing to talk about it, so you don’t talk. Which is why I’m not writing or talking.

There will be an Online Town Hall, Wednesday August 5 at 6:30 p.m. The online event will reintroduce the initiative, share updates and highlight opportunities to get involved in the future. There will be time for Q&A and interaction from participants. The link to the Online Town Hall will be sent on the day of the event. The town hall will also be recorded and posted on our website for future
reference. Please RSVP at resilientedgemere.com Can’t make the Town Hall? HPD will be at an outdoor information table in Edgemere on Saturday, August 15 at Beach 40th Street and Beach Channel Drive from noon – 8 p.m.
Breezy Gives Blood On Sunday, July 19, 2020, Breezy Point Cooperative, Inc hosted its third blood drive since the start of the current COVID-19 pandemic resulting in 54 lifesaving donations. According to the New York Blood Center (NYBC), these 54 pints of blood will result in helping save or positively impact 162 lives. Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato is proud to have supported this lifesaving effort with both the cooperative and NYBC in Breezy Point. This would not have been possible without the support of the Co-op Board and Theresa Flanigan, Events Coordinator. “Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there has been an increased need for blood donation nationwide,” Pheffer Amato said. “I was happy to promote this important event
for the Breezy Point community to support this lifesaving cause. As always, South Queens continues to step up in times of need for patients who need it most.” This blood drive brings the cooperative’s total contributions since March 2020 to 245 donations for the community blood supply. With each donation affecting three lives, this effort has touched more than 735 patients in need. Pheffer Amato applauds this great effort and plans to host blood drives in her district over the next several months. Locations and dates are to be determined.

Raquel Confections Serves Up Gluten-Free Happiness By Katie McFadden
There’s a sweet new shop in town! Locals are flocking to the lovely lavender-colored storefront serving up a wide selection of gluten-free goodies on Beach 96th Street. This mother-daughter owned bakery, Raquel Confections, is quickly becoming a big hit. Gluten? Who needs it? Raquel Confections is filling a longtime need for more gluten-free options on the peninsula for those with celiac disease or a gluten-intolerance, but the delicious options will have any mouth watering, no matter your dietary preference. The baked goods and sweets speak for themselves. Consider big seller, Mom’s Favorite, an oatmeal cookie with pecans, cranberries and white chocolate. Cinnamon rolls with just the right amount of sweetness and spice. Or new additions like vegan berry rolls, or a selection of cheesecakes from cherry to raspberry to salted caramel pretzel. Or maybe you’re in the mood for a fudge brownie or fresh fruit tart? They even offer specialized cakes and gluten-free breads that are in such high demand, they require being ordered ahead of time. All of these goodies are now being offered by the mother-daughter duo of Victoria and Tara Thomas of Raquel Confections. Raquel comes from Tara’s middle name, and as someone with celiac disease, she knows the value of having quality gluten-free options. “I would go to different places and try to get gluten-free options, but it wasn’t the best. I didn’t like the taste, so I wanted to make something that everyone could enjoy. Everyone deserves a little happiness,” Tara said. Tara knows a thing or two about happiness. After all, becoming a baker was all part of her personal pursuit of happiness. Tara was pursuing a career as a doctor, studying psychology and pre-med in college, but her mother, Victoria, could tell it wasn’t what her daughter’s heart was set on. “Medical school and books were expensive, but I didn’t
care about that,” Victoria said. “Her well-being is what made a difference to me. I didn’t want her to grow up unhappy.” After spending some time working at Sayra’s wine bar, putting in precision and detail into the small plates, Tara realized her calling. Victoria noticed it too. “When she worked at Sayra’s, she was so particular about how her plates went out and she would even rearrange plates that other staff made before sending it out and I realized she had a gift for it. We’d go out to eat and she’d send things back to the kitchen. I was like, what are you, Gordon Ramsey?” Victoria recalled. That culinary precision was in her blood. Tara says she picked up her knack for knowing quality food from her late uncle, who had her sampling caviar and other delicacies from a young age. “We always grew up with quality food in the house,” Tara said. Her grandfather also owned a catering company—something Victoria continued, in between performance gigs as recording artist, Vikki Love, and as part-owner of a restaurant in Inwood, which recently closed due to coronavirus. The thought of culinary school peaked Tara’s interest and she soon landed a spot at the Institute of Culinary Education, where she began training as a pastry chef. It wasn’t long before Tara’s skill got recognized and her pursuit of happiness led her to the “happiest place on Earth”—Disney. In 2019, Tara was accepted into
the Disney Culinary Program at Magic Kingdom in Orlando. Working with the allergy team, Tara made sweets for all of Magic Kingdom’s big events and dessert parties for more than six months. But home was calling her name. Tara returned home to Rockaway and continued making desserts from a home-based kitchen, but it wasn’t long before her next step started calling her name. Tara and Victoria say they weren’t necessarily looking to open their own bakery, but opportunity came knocking. After going on a support local business-spree, frequenting local eateries to show them some love during the pandemic, that love was returned. “We patroned everyone, but we kept going back to Bernadette’s Summer Spot on 90th Street. We went there three times in one day. As pescatarians, they had some things we could eat, and during that third time, owner Tyree Robinson said, ‘aren’t you the singer? Aren’t you the baker?’ and we said ‘yeah,’ and he offered us up this spot,” Victoria said. “We looked at each other and said, this is what we need to do.” With Bernadette being Victoria’s middle name and the store’s color being her favorite, it was as if fate was handing them their next opportunity. The ladies took the spot right next to Bernadette’s on Beach 96th Street. “It was the best decision we’ve ever made,” Tara said. Raquel Confections opened on Father’s Day, Sunday, June
21 and has already made a big splash in the neighborhood. “For the past few weeks, we’ve been constantly selling out of stuff,” Tara said. “We have people banging on the door after we close,” Victoria added. It’s also clear that offering gluten-free options has filled a longtime need in the community. “Last week, we had a couple come in that heard about us. They bought a box of items and came by again over the weekend to tell us that within an hour, their son had devoured the cinnamon roll. He hadn’t had anything that good since he found out he has celiac disease,” Victoria said. “We had tears in our eyes listening to this. This is why we’re doing this.” Even other businesses have shown some love. From Cuisine by Claudette’s requesting orders of their gluten-free bread, to groups like Edgemere Farm and the Rockaway Youth Task Force requesting items like kale muffins, and even a potential partnership with Mara’s Ice Cream, to provide gluten-free ice cream sandwiches, the possibilities are endless for the future of Raquel Confections. Currently working out of a small gluten-free kitchen on site, the ladies have big hopes for what’s ahead. “I definitely want to have a café because I want people to come sit and enjoy everything. Obviously not now with coronavirus, but hopefully in the future,” Tara said. “We’d also like to do wholesale down the line. I’ve worked in wholesale and I enjoy doing it and it makes it a whole lot easier to sell things in the shop and elsewhere.” Victoria expanded upon this, saying, “I want to go to Stop & Shop one day and find Raquel Confections.” In the meantime, you can find Raquel Confections at 95-19 Rockaway Beach Blvd. They’re currently open Wednesdays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

***** So, what’s going on with the jetties? The plan (hope) is for real work to start in early September. They are collecting rocks (really), getting equipment ready, and above all, waiting for the piping plovers to leave which usually happens in mid-August. According to the Army Corps of Engineers, it takes about two months for one jetty to be installed. So, the project will take a couple of years to complete. In 2018, fifteen jetties (groins) were installed at Long Beach and the beaches there look healthy. ***** The Rockaway Times Photo Contest has narrowed its Top 30 to a Top 10. The photos, adorning the rail along the boardwalk and at the ferry dock, are spectacular and have really been a big attraction for
beachgoers. In previous years, we’ve held a fun ceremony at Caracas to pick the winner but this year we’ve got to do it remotely. We’ll announce the winner (and Top 3) online and in the August 14 edition of the paper. ***** Just thinking out loud…why not close Beach 129th Street to traffic on a Saturday from 4 – 10 p.m. to see how it works? Restaurants and food businesses could really expand their outdoor spaces and foot traffic could benefit other businesses as well. Just an idea. Anything to cut down on the double parking… ***** The Queens Chronicle reports that there are (already) four candidates eyeing Eric Ulrich’s City Council seat, which, if he fulfills his term, ends in 2021. Lew Simon and Mike Scala are two names you probably know for their local activism. The other two, Felicia Singh and Kaled Alamarie, are not well known in Rockaway, but have started fundraising and
are likely to start showing up in the area. ***** Before Sandy, there was an oceanfront concrete road in Fort Tilden, perfect for biking, jogging or strolling. The storm wrecked about half of it and there’s been no easy way through on the oceanside ever since. After a contractor hired by the Federal Highways Administrator did a laughably poor job putting in sand and shells as some kind of makeshift path (that made no one happy), the National Park Service is seeking funding elsewhere to make the road useable again. ***** Speaking of Hurricane Sandy…part of beach protection is the dune system that pretty much runs from Neponsit to Far Rockaway. We remember when Parks used to keep an eye on them and chase people off. Not so much anymore. Maybe because social distancing is the order of the day but people are not just walking on the dunes, they are

Enjoy a Day on the Bay with Rockaway Sailing By Katie McFadden
Activities are limited in the age of coronavirus, but there’s no better place to social distance than on the sea. And Rockaway Sailing can take you there. Longtime sailor Pete Heinz is sharing his love of sailing with lessons and cruises around Jamaica Bay. The Rockaway Times recently got a firsthand experience upon “Walk on the Sun,” a 24foot J-24 sailboat named after a line in a Bruce Springsteen song. And while Springsteen may have been “Born to Run,” Heinz was born to sail. For nearly 50 years, Heinz has been hoisting the sails and letting the wind take him on adventures. Coming from a family that ran its own sailing school and boatyard in Port Washington for 25 years, Heinz grew up with sailing in his blood and for the past two years, he’s been carrying on the tradition by sharing the experience with others through Rockaway Sailing. Although living in Richmond Hill, Rockaway has long been his beach, but Heinz wanted to bring more attention to the bay, which presents the perfect conditions for smooth sailing. “I thought this side of the bay was underutilized considering how good the wind is all the time,” Heinz said. And with increasing interest in the Rockaways in recent years, he decided it was time to bring more attention to sailing. In 2018, Heinz launched Rockaway Sailing, offering both cruises around the bay and basic lessons. While business was slow to start, with people looking to get out of the house after months of quarantine, Rockaway Sailing has gotten more attention this summer. Heinz moors his boat off of Broad Channel and picks up his passengers by Bay Breeze Park on Beach 88th Street. Passengers jump into a raft on the beach and Heinz rows toward the star of the show—his sailboat, where they climb aboard for the adventure of their choosing. Offering both daytrips and
sunset tours, during cruises Heinz will take passengers around the bay for a two-hour adventure. During the tour, passengers may get a closer glimpse of the Broad Chanel homes on stilts, which remind Heinz of New England. “You’d never imagine you’re in Queens when you see those,” he said.
He’ll then sail under the Cross Bay Bridge, bringing guests to a greater expanse of Jamaica Bay, where they can catch a glimpse of the Manhattan skyline, and if they’re lucky, a seal sprawled out on a sandbar, as the RT saw on our late afternoon trip. For those looking to learn more about sailing, Heinz also provides lessons. While he doesn’t offer certifications, students can learn some valuable information that comes from many years of sailing experience, such as how to read the winds, becoming familiar with direction and reading the tides to know when they’re coming or going. Heinz also explains the mechanics, everything from
trimming the sails to dropping an anchor and steering the boat, so that people can get a better understanding of sailing. Educating others is in Heinz’s nature. As a teacher for 20 years, currently teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at a public school in Corona, Heinz has long provided valuable les-
sons to his students, and he’s even incorporated his love of boats and mechanics into extracurriculars to give students skills that could come in handy. “I never thought of myself as privileged until I started working in Corona. Parents are so paranoid about street crime now that their kids aren’t hanging out outside. I learned so much about life, mechanics and engineering, just hanging out with my friends, riding bikes, than I ever did in the classroom and I see that my students don’t get to do that so much,” he said. “I like teaching about the things that have made my life better.” So, Heinz and fellow teachers started a
Saturday program, teaching a group of students how to build row boats. Together, his students helped build two rowboats in two years, but with pricey materials like wood and fiberglass difficult to come by, Heinz switched over to something a bit more common— bikes. “We joined up with Recycle a Bike and they donated 20 bikes or so to rebuild with the kids. It’s a Saturday program where they learn a little about engineering and with
this, they can get exercise, help alleviate traffic problems and maybe a kid can even get a job at a bike shop with the skills they learn,” Heinz said. “It’s a good way to enrich the lives of my students.” In the future, Heinz hopes to further enrich the lives of youth by establishing a kids sailing program. With the help of his own kids, a 17-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old son, who also have a background in sailing, Heinz hopes to host a four-day program, to teach kids how to sail. In the meantime, owning a sailing business has been enriching for Heinz. “I love sailing, and this has allowed me to support the boat, and I love talking with new people. I’ve met a lot of interesting people,” Heinz said. To book your cruise, lesson or for more information, check out: www.RockawaySailing.com or call 917-900-5638. The TOP 30 photos of The Rockaway Times Photo Contest are displayed on the boardwalk railing in the vicinity of Beach 95th Street. Many thousands of beachgoers have marveled at the talent of the photographers. Picking a Top 10 was tough! But our 11 judges wrestled with the choices and fi-
nally settled on the group that will be judged for the top prize. And here they are! We are still working on the logistics about how and when the Winner will be picked, but it may consist of an online vote. To avoid favoritism, photographer names are currently being withheld. Stay tuned!

AMATO BILL TO EXTEND 9/11 TASK FORCE Assemblywoman Stacey Amato and Senator Andrew Gounardes (D-Brooklyn) passed a bill, A.10249/S.8129, that would revive and extend the September 11th Workers Protection Task Force (“Task Force”). The bill passed through both the State Assembly and Senate and will be sent to the Governor’s desk for signature. The Task Force was a key component of New York’s landmark 2005 legislation creating pension benefits for first responders who participated in the rescue, recovery and cleanup operations at the World Trade Center. First set to expire in 2010, it was extended many times, most recently in 2015. According to Amato and Gounardes, the bill reauthorizes the task force until 2025 and seeks to revitalize it by refreshing appointments, expanding
the areas of study, and setting a biannual meeting requirement to accompany the provision that the task force deliver reports on its findings to the Governor, Senate and Assembly by June 1 each year. "Last year, the legislature worked tirelessly to ensure that all 9/11 first responders received the benefits they were not only were entitled to but deserve- we began to reform the NYCERS board by increasing the number of physicians who could take on cases, and we finally provided unlimited sick leave to those battling for their lives as a result of a 9/11 illness," Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato said. "Now, we're taking another major step in that direction. The reinstatement of this Task Force will allow us to identify more people that we can help, and more lives that we can potentially save.”

Amato Calls For Shelter Social Distancing Assemblywoman Stacey Amato introduced a bill which would amend the social services law requiring any homeless shelter residence in New York State to comply with the social distancing regulations for prevention of the COVID-19 virus. Amato introduced the bill after concerns were raised about the dormitory style housing within the shelters leaving residents vulnerable to contracting illnesses such as COVID-19 and spreading throughout the shelter, to employees, and surrounding communities. The bill proposed would require shelters to convert their living spaces such that they can adhere to social distancing protocols to ensure that residents are protected from the current threat of the COVID-19 virus and other easily communicable illnesses moving forward. In May, all of the men who had been staying at a homeless
shelter on Beach 101st Street were relocated to a commercial hotel amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Throughout the pandemic, thousands of New Yorkers in the homeless shelter system are being removed from their shelters and into commercial hotels to ensure that they can maintain social distancing-However, this cannot last forever and we need a plan going forward to keep these individuals safe,” Amato said. “If the residents are sent back to shelters that use dormitory style housing and do not provide six feet of distance between each bed, then we are not only putting the residents in danger of contracting and spreading illnesses but also the surrounding communities. This legislation ensures that the shelters are keeping the residents, workers, and surrounding communities safe now and moving.”

Beach Sessions Online
For the past few summers, Beach Sessions has wowed many on the beach with professionally choreographed dance performances. This year, the performances are virtual as artists/ choreographers were invited to use social media to reach an audience of millions. Beach Sessions invited choreographers to “create original movement scores to be learned and replicated on a social media platform made popular by viral dance challenges. While we all can’t get to a beach and experience public live perfor-

mance, this summer’s program encourages the viewer to get outside where they can, learn a phrase, and repost on their personal TikTok profile, performing virtually on a stage in front of millions.” The mission of Beach Sessions Dance Series is to support creativity in the Rockaways, inspire sustained investment in the natural beauty of the Rockaway shoreline, and facilitate public engagement with contemporary dance on the peninsula. You can find out more at beachsessionsdanceseries.com.
Pepe Cardona, the lead singer of Alive N Kickin’ has died. On Tuesday, July 29, Cardona died after a battle with Stage 3 Pancreatic cancer. Cardona was diagnosed last August. Cardona is best known as the lead singer of Brooklyn-based band Alive N Kickin’, which was popular in the 1970s. The band is known for their hit “Tighter and Tighter,” which reached #7 on U.S. charts and reached gold status by selling one-million copies in 1970. In recent years, the duo of Cardona and
Sandy Toder, made several appearances in Rockaway, including at Beach Concerts on Beach 94th Street, at music venue, Thai Rock, and at the Little North Pole lighting. On Wednesday, the band posted to its Facebook page saying, “It's with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our lead singer Pepe Cardona. His tireless dedication and energetic performances kept the "Kickin" in Alive N Kickin for fifty years! He was one of a kind and will be missed. Rest in peace Pepe.”

Rockaway Delivers: Getting to Know Your Local Delivery People By Katie McFadden
Delivery workers have become some of the unsung the heroes of coronavirus pandemic and during busy beach weekends when moving the car to pick up food becomes impossible. The Rockaway Times recently caught up with some of Rockaway’s local delivery workers who connect the community with delicious meals from local businesses. For Anthony Quinn, delivering is a full-time job. For the past 13 years, he’s delivered food around Rockaway, including the past six years at Boardwalk Pizza in Arverne by the Sea. However, in recent months, as the demand for delivery drivers grows during a time when more people are resorting to takeout, and when other jobs or plans have been disrupted due to coronavirus, some locals are picking up deliveries for the first time. Rick Horan tested the waters with UberEats back in May but started in June with a steadier delivery gig at Pizza D’Amore on Beach 116th Street. Liz Hanna has been busy supporting local businesses through her RBNY: Rockaway Businesses Need You page, but she recently took it a step further by lending a helping hand to Kimo’s Kitchen as demand grows at the up-and-coming Mediterranean eatery in Rockaway Beach. We spoke with each of them about why they opted for delivery gigs and some of the benefits and challenges that come with the job. For Quinn, the reason he’s been a longtime delivery person is simple—"It's easy, it’s local and it’s fun for me,” he said. “I like interacting with the community. I get to meet interesting people every day and see some familiar faces. I make my own schedule and I get to stay in my car, listening to music and I don’t have to work too hard.” Horan got into delivering because well, he’s already done just about everything else! “I’ve had virtually every other job known to man and I had to check this box off,” he said. He also had some time. As things started to slow down at his job as a recruiter in recent years and Covid-19, “put the final nail in the coffin,” it
was the perfect time to try something new. Beginning with UberEats, he quickly found himself going as far as mainland Queens and Brooklyn to make deliveries. But after three weeks, he wanted something a bit closer to home. Known as the “Idea Guy,” Horan got to thinking. He came up with 123 Deliveries, offering his own service to local restaurants that might need help with a filler delivery guy during busy times. Pizza D’Amore had a bigger need, and Horan has found himself delivering during evening shifts about six nights a week. Hanna says she got into delivering simply because, “I kind of just needed something to do,” she said. Also, Mike Adil of Kimo’s really needed some help keeping up with increasing orders. “I like Mike and his family, and it seemed like the right timing for me…and I really do enjoy it,” Hanna said. For all three, getting to interact with and meet new people has been a big plus for the job. “I’ve met hundreds of people that I normally wouldn’t have met because I don’t go out in Rockaway much. But I’m delivering to about 200 people a week, so I’m meeting new people all of the time,” Quinn said. “I’ve met people that are all interesting in their own way and have their own story. Plus getting to know the people you work with and the reasons they got into the restaurant business makes it interesting,” Horan said. For Hanna, the opportunity has
even restored her faith in humanity, getting to interact with people beyond social media. “People can be such keyboard warriors online and spread a lot of hate, but I’m getting to see people face to face and it’s just not as bad as media and social media portrays things. I’ve been to every part of this peninsula and I enjoy meeting people from everywhere,” she said. One of the perks of the job is tips, and overall, Rockaway’s local delivery workers say the tips are decent. “I don’t put a number to it, I just think people should tip based on the service and with what they feel comfortable,” Quinn said. But some tips have been better than others. His biggest tip? $30. For Horan, the same. But he added that most tips average about $5, or $10 to $20 for bigger orders. And on rare occasions, some have gotten no tip. With Kimo’s being one of the many local restaurants that offer Seamless and GrubHub app ordering options, Hanna says tips can sometimes be lower as people wind up paying high fees for such orders, and restaurants take a big cut in profit due to fees. While these services may be a good way to advertise local restaurants, Hanna says most businesses prefer that people call and order from the restaurant directly or utilize the restaurant’s website to order to avoid paying extra fees. In unique times such as coronavirus, delivery people have adapted. All three delivery people say they make sure to wear masks and sanitize to keep them-
selves and customers safe. In some instances, they’ve had to accommodate requests for contactless delivery, leaving orders outside of homes and accepting tips by credit card. As Quinn has longtime experience to compare It to, he says, “There’s definitely less interaction. People I’d normally converse with tend to accept their food and run back into the house now. It’s made it less personal.” Now with summer in full swing, traffic, especially on weekends, has become an added challenge. “The traffic is an absolute nightmare. We deliver up to Breezy and sometimes it will take an hour just to get there from Boardwalk. But even going to the local buildings is hard. Shore Front is also a disaster because you can’t get around. There are cars parked in the middle of the road to let people out or someone will slam on the brakes because they think they found a spot,” he said. “It’s really hard,” Hanna said. “I’m a good defensive driver, but I’ve never seen anything like this the past few weekends. You have a lot of angry people in cars, people that walk in front of your car, bikers… When we go to Breezy or Broad Channel, depending on the day, it can take an extra half hour. I think I did the same amount of deliveries as usual, but the weekend really brought me to my knees.” For Horan, beach deliveries are a unique challenge. “You show up and park at the end of the beach block and call the number of the person who ordered and sometimes no one answers. The beaches have bad cell coverage in some spots, so it really complicates it. So then you bring the pizza down to the beach and hope that the person that ordered looks up and sees you. I brought down a few pies to the beach one day and couldn’t get a hold of the person, so I wound up selling them to three other beachgoers who happened to be hungry,” Horan said. “You roll with the punches.” So Rockaway, when ordering delivery, opt for direct orders over Apps, don’t forget to tip, have a little patience on busy summer days, make sure to pick up that call and most of all, enjoy your food!

From Experience Dear Editor: I’m a 70-year-old Covid-19 survivor with underlying conditions who had to self-quarantine for 14 days while sick as hell. The experience makes me look at matters differently these days. I listen to the “backyard happy hours” that go on too late, especially on weekends! Short walks in the early morning replace my beach time because of overcrowded, unmasked, flip floppers. My gourmet skills are getting better because some bars/restaurants do not follow
suggesting that “patriotic” Americans like himself should follow suit. Later he said, in no uncertain terms, that the COVID-19 outbreak will probably “get worse before it gets better.” So, to everyone still refusing to wear a mask: you’re finally out of excuses. Wear a mask. As of this writing, nearly 150,000 Americans have died from COVID-19. Cases are on the rise nationwide. These are facts – facts which, after months of ignoring medical professionals and health experts, even the president has been forced to admit. It’s long past time for everyone else to do the same. Going to the grocery store? Wear a mask. Nobody wants to catch a deadly virus while standing at the deli counter. Going to the beach? I get it, I don’t want to wear a mask at Wear the beach either. But wear a A Mask mask – just until you find your Dear Editor: spot, and then feel free to take The president of the Unit- it off, as long as you keep your ed States tweeted a picture of distance from others. It’s a himself wearing a face mask, reasonable compromise. Going absolutely anywhere that can be classified as a public space, including walking down the sidewalk? Wear a mask. I bike roughly twelve miles every day, the length of the boardwalk and back, wearing my mask. Not for one block have I felt like my personal freedoms were being infringed upon, nor that my brain was being deprived of necessary oxygen. Do you support essential workers and law enforcement? Do you even have a sign in front of your house pro-
all proper safety protocols. On a recent Saturday, it was a nightmare taking a couple of hours to get home from Brooklyn wondering how the one parking lot attendant in the mostly full Riis Park Parking lot must have felt. Overwhelmed? My point of all this is that we don’t live in a bubble and there’s a pandemic going on. Shouldn’t we be more mindful of being safe for ourselves and others?? ONE infected person asymptomatic or otherwise could exponentially infect and run rampant in an entire community. Covid-19 has certainly changed my life forever. Try your best not to let it change yours. Be safe. William James
A Hot Dog Tradition Lives On!
The Rockaway Times claiming this? Wear a mask. It’s truly the least you can do to support the people who are literally putting their lives and the lives of their families on the line for you each and every day. I’m fairly certain they would appreciate this minimal gesture a lot more than a nightly performative serenade. Do you have a mouth and a nose? You need to cover them both with your mask. Otherwise, it’s not working. This disease and its effects are not a hoax; they are very real. Yes, most people who are infected with COVID-19 recover. But there’s also a non-zero chance that while contagious, they will infect someone else who is not so lucky. Furthermore, many people who have recovered are reporting lingering respiratory and neurological problems. It’s just not worth the risk, particularly when the way we beat “the beast” is so easy and painless: just wear a mask. This is not about your rights or your freedom. If you don’t want to wear your seatbelt, fine. If you want to go in the ocean when the lifeguards are off duty, swim away. But when it comes to a highly contagious virus that is sweeping the globe, you don’t get to be so cavalier, because it’s not just about you anymore. You have the absolute right and freedom to go on making bad faith arguments about how your personal freedom outweighs the public good in some other arena, but not here and not now. Time’s up. Wear a mask. David Tatasciore

Hot dog! Tradition lives on in Rockaway. Although a bit delayed this year, on Sunday, July 26, Tom Lawler and Peter Marconi continued the usual July 4th Walter Blum hot dog tradition by dishing them out to neighbors on Beach 133rd Street. The tradition, started by Walter Blum, has been taking place for more than 20 years.

Schoolyard Hoops CLASSIC UNDERWAY WITH NEW RULES The Summer Classic enjoyed a great opening week with both players and fans embracing a return to play. The High School and Open divisions have now quickly reached the halfway point. The rust from the long layoff is beginning to fade away and favorites are beginning to emerge in Mens Open. Defending champions, Malbro, has reverted to its previous identity as Kennedy's Restaurant but they execute their precise play regardless of nomenclature. They are undefeated after three games, including an opening night win over Trends By Meg in a rematch of last year's championship. They also took a win this Tuesday over ASAP C Merch, who were last seen watching Charlie Marquardt's miracle half-court shot end their season last August. Jameson's Pub
has retooled their roster and looks to be a worthy challenger this year. The first two weeks have been a different experience with no spectators inside the schoolyard. Fans now stay outside the fence and MASK UP to watch the games. Grammar school play begins this Friday night and will be a test with the new protocols as one parent may enter the yard with their child. Their designated viewing area will be a marked rectangle, six feet behind their child's bleacher. The parent must wear a mask and enter when the child enters, in order to gain access. A parent cannot arrive later and enter. The youngest Grammar school divisions, which play at 5:45 p.m. will begin play on Monday, August 3 (Boys) and Tuesday, August 4 (Girls).

Type 1 Diabetes Type 1 diabetes, once called juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes, is usually seen in children and adolescents, but can rarely be seen in adults. Unlike Type 2 diabetes, where the pancreas still makes some insulin, in Type 1 the pancreas makes no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows glucose, a simple sugar, to enter cells and produce energy. Glucose is the basic fuel that runs our bodies. It comes from the food we eat, and it is stored in the liver. For reasons not yet fully understood, in Type 1 diabetes the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin are attacked
and destroyed by the body’s own immune system. This destruction of these vital cells is thought to be triggered by genetic factors, a viral infection, or both. There is no cure for Type 1 diabetes. Diabetes has many dangerous complications, including eye damage and blindness (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), kidney damage and failure (nephropathy), and early heart and vascular disease. These complications often occur sooner in the disease progression, and may be more serious, especially when the diabetes is poorly controlled.
Sadly, glycemic (sugar) control remains suboptimal in the majority of adolescents and young adults with Type 1 diabetes, leading to earlier complications and shorter life spans. Diabetic control over time is measured by using hemoglobin A1c levels (A1c), which measure diabetic control over approximately a three-month period. Ideally, A1c levels in diabetics should be between 6% and 7%, with closer to 6% being preferable. In 2019, the American Diabetes Association reported that, in type 1 diabetics, only 17% attained A1c levels of 7.5% or less, and 14% had levels of 7% or less. Several recent studies have been published which looked at using a relatively new technology to improve glycemic control in young Type 1 diabetics. The technology used by these studies was continuous glucose monitoring, or CGM. CGM uses sensors, either implanted under the skin or attached to the skin, to monitor and report glucose levels, usually via a smartphone. This eliminates the need for the patient to do frequent,
Page 25 painful, fingerstick measurements of glucose levels. By using CGM, the patient can make frequent changes to insulin doses to keep glucose levels lower. In these studies, short-termed though they were, the authors were able to demonstrate slightly lower A1c levels by using CGM. In theory, lower A1c levels will translate to fewer long-term diabetic complications and longer life spans. This new technology, taken to its ultimate degree, will use CGM, a smart phone, and an implanted insulin pump, allowing the pump to release insulin into the body in response to real-time glucose levels provided by a CGM sensor, essentially mimicking the pancreas’s normal functioning. While much more research is needed, it is possible that in the not-too-distant future, people with Type 1 diabetes may be able to control the disease, eliminate complications, and live longer, healthier lives. Questions and comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com.

CELEBRATE Celebrate this, your moment of being alive. Looking back on the past four months, I have moments of disbelief. How could all of this have happened? How many people have been directly affected? How heavy is the collective grief? And no matter how much we try, conversations always turn back to this new reality and the uncertainty of the immediate future. There were many more stories of “silver linings when we were in the thick of it here,
which really brought hope and momentary relief day by day. Now, we are coasting and that never really feels great - neither here nor there. What is to come? What is the right thing to do? Uncertainty on this level is very, very disconcerting. But we can always remedy the way we think and react. Now is the time to count our blessings from simple to grand. We post on Instagram our yoga classes every day for the next day along with a thought provok-
ing quote or amazing photo. One recent post had many, many more likes than any other. “I woke up. I have clothes to wear. I have running water. I have food to eat. Life is good. I am thankful. That overwhelming response suggests to me that people want to focus on the positive and just maybe need to be reminded. The feeling of gratitude taken deeply into the heart is a life saver. Being grateful for simple pleasures puts a positive spin on everything inside. When you continuously practice this, you will notice the corners of your mouth lifting up for no apparent reason. And to bring into practice everyday celebration. Celebrate every day even if it means just saying to ourselves: “today I celebrate the sunshine, or “today I celebrate feeling good, or “today I celebrate taking a walk — whatever it may be. Simple pleasures to focus on and celebrate. By using the word “celebrate, it brings the intention and the feelings we have as-
The Rockaway Times sociated with that word to our inner workings. I can not say enough— and I know I often do in this column— changing the language we speak to ourselves can change how we feel every single day. Acknowledging to ourselves the things we have, the people we have in our lives, brings a sense of “this life, my life, can be ok. Now is the time to free the heart, let all intentions and worries stop, free the joy inside the self, awaken to the wonder of your life. Open your eyes and see the friends whose hearts recognize your face as kin, those whose kindness watchful and near, encourages you to live everything here. See the gifts the years have given, things your effort could never earn, the health to enjoy who you want to be and the mind to mirror mystery. - John O'Donohue May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you be compassionate. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Chinese Food with My Ex Dear Enchantress, Ok sister, why do I keep giving women more than one chance in the dating/love dept?? Ugh! I went and visited a past love on Friday, the one who was going back to her ex, and I guess that week wasn’t going good for me or her. She texted me to see if I wanted to come down Friday and she was going to take me out for dinner (her favorite Chinese place). We picked up the order and watched the new L Word Generation

WrestleTalk
IMPACT WRESTLING By Eric Jayden
Impact Wrestling was founded on June 19, 2002 by Jeff and Jerry Jarrett and since then it has undergone different ownerships and different names from NWA Total Nonstop Action, TNA Impact to Impact Wrestling. The company is now owned by Anthem Sports based out of Ontario, Canada. Many of today’s top Professional Wrestling Superstars got their start or an opportunity to be seen with Impact Wrestling. Stars like AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, Bobby Roode, Xavier Woods, Homicide, Santana and Ortiz got their start there and were molded by the promotion. The promotion's product has suffered through changes in ownership and booking staff in addition to losing television deals that affected the product. But most recently, the Impact product has seen a resurgence with quality talent and storylines.
Consistent storylines are the key factor that make wrestling fans want to come back to see the product. Fans are drawn to the product when the storylines are made interesting and not too cartoonish. In my opinion, professional wrestling fans should not be treated like they do not understand what is going on, or better yet treat them as they are valued fans and give them quality not quantity. So far, Impact Wrestling has been do-
ing a great job putting out quality matches with storylines. My only hope is that Impact Wrestling continues on its current trend and hopefully gets an opportunity to surpass All Elite Wrestling and the WWE. But like they say in wrestling, "Time Will Tell." The question of the week comes from Michael A. from Flushing, Queens and he asked, "What are your thoughts about Jeff Jarrett?" Great question, Mi-
chael! Jeff Jarrett is one of the top wrestlers in the world in my book. He was a constant entertainer who understood good storyline, good character and good ring psychology. Hopefully we'll get a chance to see him make a return in the future. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @followthebadguy Have a Great Week!
