Countdown to Rockaway Caribbean Carnival 2018! phasized that this is a great opportunity for vendors to showcase their goods to thousands. “For those of you who are entrepreneurially-minded, time to figure out how you can have a table or a booth at the Carnival, and make sure that what you sell is out there,” Sanders said. As the Senator ceremoniously held up his black and gold-feathered headpiece and crowned his head, leading the crowd in a mini parade down Beach 20th Street, he said, “With this Caribbean Carnival, we are no longer the Rockaway peninsula, but the island of

The blistering heat this past Saturday, June 30 made Far Rockaway feel more like the Caribbean, which was perfect, given the occasion. Droves of people of all nationalities and cultures, donned colorful headpieces and costumes, and congregated in feverish anticipation at the Beach 20th Street Pedestrian Plaza for the official launch accouncement of the 2nd Annual Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways. Senator James Sanders, Jr. got the crowd euphorically whooping when he announced, “This year’s Carnival on Saturday, August 25 is not going to be as good as the first, it’s going to be better! We are closer to the date when we are going to play mas, jump up, have fun and celebrate Caribbean culture in the Rockaways. We are all going to have a ball!” According to Lisa George, constituent liaison and manager for Senator Sanders’ of-
fice, last year’s first annual ground-breaking Carnival drew more than 5,000 people to Rockaway, and they are happy to do it again. “Last year’s event was safe, fun and boosted Caribbean culture and pride, and this year’s Carnival created by Senator Sanders’ office, supported in

Senator Sanders teased the crowd when he tipped that Tobagonian soca legend, Lord Nelson will be honored. (Last year, soca king of the world, The Mighty Sparrow performed, wooing fans from all over just to get a chance to see him live.) “I’m not going to reveal anything more about the artists performing, but our lineup this year is going to great,” Sanders crowed. A lieutenant from the 101st Precinct said, “The first annual Carnival was a great success with no incidents reported, and we at the NYPD are looking forward to making everyone safe again and for the community to have fun at the soon coming second annual Carnival.” Senators Sanders also em-

So time to play mas, jump up and have fun!” The Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways will take place on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., kicking off at Beach 59th Street and Arverne Boulevard. It will feature a parade of floats, steel pan bands, moko jumbies, and masqueraders, and will culminate with live performances near the beach at Beach 94th Street. Neighborly Pretty soon, Boyleing Points goes on summer vacation, which I hope extends until Thanksgiving. It’s just too damn hard typing in this heat. Anyway, I hope most of you are as forgetful as me and don’t recognize when I start to slip in columns from the past before I go completely radio silent. With everybody out and about and heading to beaches and barbecues, it’s the time of year when having good neighbors is no small blessing. This is a retread of a 2016 column which, I have to say, made me smile when I re-read the Mrs. Winters anecdote. Mrs. Winters was the mother of a future NBA All-Star, Brian Winters. He was an all-time Rockaway great who grew up on Newport Avenue in Rockaway Park. A couple years back, Charlie Moran sent us a letter about the good humor and grace of Mrs. Winters. “One Saturday morning we all decided to meet in the Winters’ backyard at 7 a.m. and play some hoops. We all showed up at 7 a.m. yelling, screaming, playing some ball and having a good old time. The second floor window comes up and Mrs. Winters' head comes out of the window and she asks us politely, "Boys, could you please come back at 9 a.m.?” Funny thing is, if she had barked at them and scared them away, I doubt Charlie would’ve remembered anything about that morning. For every Mrs. Winters, there are ten people who
would’ve growled the equivalent of “Get off my lawn.” Sad to say, I’d probably be more grouch than Mrs. Winters, even though I have no right after the way we terrorized our neighbors growing up. We had a hoop in our backyard, too. I’m sure were told that we couldn’t play until 9 a.m. as well. But it wasn’t so much the hour of the day that was the cause of turmoil on East 36th Street. It was the most unfortunate way the ball seemed to bounce. In one direction, the ball would land in our neighbor’s carefully-tended garden. In the other direction, the ball had an uncanny way of landing on a neighbor’s barbecue grill or off the head of some visiting granny-type. We showed our compassion and concern by putting up chicken wire about twenty feet high. Our backyard was like something you’d see in Better Prisons Magazine. The class we had. Of course, as bad as we were, we did what humans do – we pointed out some family that was even worse. We were bad, we’d admit, but at least we weren’t as bad as the soand-so family. Ah, the poor neighbors of the so-and-sos. That’s who you should feel sorry for. Of course, neighbors just don’t live in houses. People live in apartments and often share walls with people they hate. Sometimes they have to stand a few feet apart waiting for an elevator. Then they have to get on and ride in the tiny compartment up to the floor they both live
Page 5
on. They retreat to their own apartment and then look at the shared walls sending bad wishes to each other. Shared walls and shared driveways can start never ending wars. Some people erect grudge fences. They have some kind of problem and then put up a Berlin wall no matter how unsightly it might be. Some people seem bothered by everything and there’s nothing a good neighbor can do. A lot of neighbors just want to keep it businesslike. They say good morning and that’s that. Sometimes they might hold a package for the neighbors or take in a trash can but that might become a habit, god forbid, so they can’t be too nice. Other times people move in next to each other as total strangers and soon become great friends, part of the extended family. Happens all the time in Rockaway. But you never know. Neighbors are like kids - you just never know what you’re gonna get.
Here’s hoping the thought of your neighbors doesn’t make you want to scream. Or plot deadly schemes in your head. Yeah, I know, some of you do plot… Truth is, one of the more underrated things in life is having good neighbors. Anyway, if my neighbors read this: Good morning and for the record, I’ve never plotted any evil schemes. Well, except for that one guy a few years back…

The usually derelict T-9 building at Fort Tilden is alive once more with an art exhibit. Two years ago, singer/artist Patti Smith used the space for her Resilience of the Dreamer exhibit and drew large summer crowds. This year, Yayoi Kusama's exhibit, “Narcissus Garden,” a display featuring 1,500 reflective metal spheres, is the latest Rockaway! Show. Rockaway! It’s an art series presented by MoMA PS1, Klaus Biesenbach, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service. The Kusama installation is free and open to the public Fridays through Sundays,12 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on July 4 (Independence Day) to September 3 (Labor Day).

***** The Rockaway Times Photo Contest doesn’t yet have a finals date. We’ll let you know when it’s set. And let this be a reminder to get out there now and take photos for the 2019 contest! A top supervisor with Gateway National Park told us they want to be part of the exhibit next year. And why not? The photos really enhance the beach experience. We hope you’ve seen the photos on the boardwalk, ferry landing or in Broad Channel. They’re great! ***** There’s something new at Riis Park: Uber. The always hectic scene when cars are starting to leave the parking lot is now more hectic as Uber drivers line up or search for passengers from the bathhouse to the old Neponsit home.
THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2018 ***** Save the date! The Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is Sunday, July 29. Many local businesses donated prizes, which made it extra fun last year. If any businesses are interested in donating gift certificates or other prizes, contact Katie at Katie@rockawaytimes.com. Thanks! ***** Plenty of Rockaway people go to South Nassau Communities Hospital, so it’s worth noting that Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield last week reached an agreement to keep South Nassau ‘in network.’ Some Blue Cross members received a letter in May indicating South Nassau might be out of network as of July 1. As a result of the new agreement, Blue Cross members will enjoy continued ‘in network’ access to all South Nassau hospital services and those provided by its participating physicians. ***** Oops. Island Harvest is the largest relief organization on Long Island providing food and services for people who are hungry, and a voice for people who are in need. Allstate is proud to partner with Island Harvest and supports those efforts by providing a limited number of FREE Disaster Preparedness Kits to remind us about our vulnerability to disasters. In return we ask for donations of non-perishable and canned foods for Island Harvest. Please bring any of those items to our office located at 112-30 Beach Channel Drive, by Monday July 9. Your help can make a difference. ***** There are extra ferries and large ones, too, that have been put into service on those busy, hot days. We saw three ferries

at once at the dock. But extra bus shuttles are not added. So, if you get on one of the extras, don’t plan on a shuttle waiting for you. ***** Fun train stuff starts. Because a “flood protection” plan is underway, there will be NO trains running to Far Rockaway / Mott Avenue. There will be no Rockaway Park Shuttle service at Broad Channel. A-trains will go to Beach 116th Street. For Far Rockaway-Mott Avenue service, take the S instead, transfer at Beach 90th Street. For Broad Channel S shuttle customers, take the A instead. This will continue through at least September 3. ***** It’s too easy to forget how important Jamaica Bay is to Rockaway (Hey, Army Corps, you’ve got to pay attention to the back door, too). The news that the DEP is investing $400 million to further enhance the health of the bay is great news. Major kudos to the locals who’ve been guardians of this essential body of water.

The Warriors Return To Rockaway July 12 It is with great pleasure that we welcome back wounded service members of our great nation’s armed forces for the annual Rockaway Warriors Weekend. Hope for the Warriors is back and ready for a full weekend of programming that kicks off with a Hero’s Welcome Parade on Thursday, July 12. The parade will enter Belle Harbor via Rockaway Beach Boulevard at approximately 6:30 p.m., turning up Beach 120th Street and making its way via Beach Channel Drive, down State Road past Roxbury. The parade is expected to arrive in Breezy Point at about 7 p.m., and will continue around the Breezy Point ball field and end at the Rockaway Point Yacht Club. We ask that all of our neighbors once again line the streets to cheer them on. Come out, wave your American flags, and show your support for these brave men and women and their families who have sacrificed so much

The installation of “traffic control devices” such as stop signs is governed by section 1680 of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law which specifies that traffic control devices must comply with the U.S. Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices as modified by the NYS Supplement. IF DOT were to install three-way stop signs, it would undoubtedly be a violation of law. Three- or fourway stop signs are generally prohibited unless there is a similar amount

of traffic on all roads. I don’t believe that is the case on Beach Front Road. And (a) it is always unlawful to install stop signs to control speed, and (b) stop signs must be installed on the road with the least traffic. The rules for traffic lights are even more strict. NYC DOT is already in trouble with the Federal Highway Administration (which hands out billions of dollars in federal aid) because of repeated, deliberate violation of these rules. Eugene Falik
Pick Up, Please Dear Editor: On Brooklyn Queens Day (June 7), while school was closed, I drove back from Breezy and got off and drove down Cronston Avenue. While driving towards the Belle Harbor school on Beach 135th, I saw a pooch take a bathroom break. He did his business and it was considerable—but as I looked at the jogger behind him, I saw no bags, no tissue, nothing to clean up after his dog. The reason then became obvious as the jogger quickly yanked the dog’s leash and took off, leaving a nice big mess on the walkway at Beach 135th.
If anyone sees this person, look down before you step. If this jogger reads this, I’m the guy in the white van who beeped at you. White Van
Too Busy Dear Editor: Well I forwarded the 'groan' (re: Boyleing Points, 6/21) to all of my out of town relatives....but this week for once, I disagree with you. We didn’t go to the beach today, it’s awful!! There are too many people out there. We went out at 10 a.m. on Saturday and got an oceanfront spot, but the crowds were too much. Caracas had lines, which is good for owner, Maribel, but we wouldn’t go up there for salsa. Rite Aid was crazy to go to and so are the streets for driving. That ferry on weekends is making our beach too crowded. Finally, it’s warm and we have too many people. I know it’s good for business, but Rockaway can’t handle all of the traffic and neither can the stores and restaurants. Imagine if the 4th was on a Monday? We wouldn’t get a break. I’m looking forward to tomorrow even though school is out and many people take Continued on page 16

A Master of Motivation at RDRC By Kami-Leigh Agard
How do you inspire inner-city youth to empower themselves by getting off a stigmatizing path of government dependency into sparking a fire — of not just being self-sufficient — but becoming trailblazers in leading the path towards economic resiliency for their peers? Far Rockaway local, Nick Master, has overwhelmingly proven that he has the formula, and is determined to keep firing up local youth to know their abilities and encourage others to not just tread the challenging waters of life, but to successfully ride each wave, never looking back. Master is program coordinator for Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation’s (RDRC) Education, Employment & Career Development Services. He said through personal experiences, at a very early age, he was “able to discern a person’s righteous anger against poverty,” but without
mentorship and encouragement, they are stunted in their goals, not just to overcome their anger, but to disable forces from preventing their dream of not just being self sufficient, but successful. Of East Indian descent, Mas-
ter was born in New Jersey, but moved to Kansas with his family at a young age. “My father came to this country with just seven dollars in his pocket, but he elevated himself and my family by studying, which changed our whole American-bred liv-
ing experience. He went to school, and later worked at Columbia University in NYC as a librarian, then he secured this opportunity to work as a librarian at a university in Kansas. Years later, I learned that he got the job because he was the only applicant, but you know what, though Kansas was a world away from New Jersey, my father blessed us with a different life. Living in a Midwest college town, taught me the ethics of working hard and saving money, which I impart to youth today. I relate to them, that I too, studied and worked hard. When I was able to buy my first car, I thought, ‘Wow, now I can invite a special lady on a date!” Master said. So when Master got to New York City, it was all because of doing the old school job application process. “I used to sit in the local library in my Kansas hometown, and just apply to jobs through snail mail. internet was not happening at that time, so you just sat, looked and sent out letters applying. Then amazingly, NYC’s Child Protective Services was the first to respond, and I accepted, and I haven’t left NYC since. My career has taken me on different channels, but each experience taught me that my destiny was to help empower others to take on whatever and whoever is defeating their dreams, defy debilitating stereotypes and be the best they can be, not just for themselves, but to inspire others. “I worked for Judge Judy Sheindlin, writing up her cases, and she used to say, “I settled her case just with my writing. Due to my undergraduate background in history, I had both written and verbal skills. Also studying history taught me how American slavery lessons were based on the study of exploitation, and preserving the mindset that that’s where
THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2018 you belong. However, after reviewing and writing up many court cases, instead of being on the punitive side, I realized that I belonged on the therapeutic side, helping youth realize that toxic familial relationships and drowning in government dependency were not the roads to take,” Master said. Today, Master runs a local "boutique" program at RDRC, steadfastly working to support young adults between the ages of 16 to 30 with a range of work readiness activities. The program develops a young person’s life skills, introduces community participation, and steps to achieve education, vocational and employment goals. Young adults are taught tenets of leadership, financial management, diversity and emergency preparedness, while improving upon computer and technology skills necessary for today’s competitive work environment. Master said, “I consider myself a general in this field, but I am so overwhelmed with pride and elation when I see my stu-
dents gaining employment, managing their own checking accounts and even opening their own businesses. I take my students for haircuts, outfitting them for their first job interview suits, even giving them tours of great spots around the peninsula. I want them to know the world is out there for them, they just need to take a huge bite and get hungry for success. Also, to learn how to evade toxic family relationships. Unfortunately, I hear some of them saying, ‘Well, my family member said, ‘Why get a job? Just have a child and you are guaranteed government assistance. That’s not what I want them to imbibe in their souls. Now after my workshops, two graduates just bought their own parcel of land, another one opened her own security firm, and I could share countless more testimonies. This all gives me fulfillment. Seeing them realize there is no ceiling, only if you put it above yourselves.” Master is certified in leadership and customer training through the National Retail
Page 15 Federation. His program at RDRC, accepts no more than 17 students a year between the ages of 16 to 30, and leans heavily on mentoring and personal development, which then leads to improved self esteem, responsibility and leadership. Subsequently, careers begin to become explored, as participants believe they have no ceiling above them. The current program has concluded for the summer. It will be kicking off again this coming September, and the biggest recruits for the program, are the graduates. “I’m so proud of every student who has walked through this door and stayed dedicated, and once they, their families and friends see the change, others are motivated to learn and change their mindset. I tell them just bring yourself to the performance. Instead of feeding off the government, feed yourself,” Master said. SOUTH NASSAU AND BLUECROSS HAVE REACHED AN AGREEMENT
Good News! South Nassau Communities Hospital and Empire BlueCross BlueShield last week reached an agreement to keep South Nassau “in-network.” Some BlueCross members received a letter in May indicating South Nassau might be out of network as of July 1. As a result of the new agreement, BlueCross members will enjoy continued “in-network” access to all South Nassau hospital services and those provided by its participating physicians. We are very grateful for the support and patience we received throughout the last month from our patients and BlueCross members. We also would like to thank our elected officials who came to the aid of South Nassau, especially New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky; Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D’Esposito; New York State Assemblyman Brian Curran; New York State Assemblywoman Melissa Miller; New York State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages; Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford; Nassau County Legislator Howard Kopel; Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman; Town of Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen; Nassau County Executive Laura Curran; Rep. Kathleen Rice; Freeport Mayor Bob Kennedy; Island Park Mayor Mike McGinty; Rockville Centre Mayor Fran Murray and former New York State Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg. Thanks also are due to South Nassau staff and our voluntary board members for standing by the hospital. Finally, we want to thank BlueCross leadership for negotiating in good faith and ultimately acting in the best interests of our patients and BlueCross members.

I’ve spent a lot of time in this column extolling the virtues of the mermaid population in Rockaway Beach, and rightfully so. And while I occasionally mention mermen here and there, I do not give any ink to the Pirates of the Peninsula! So, let us talk Pirate for a bit. The Pirates of Rockaway are a different breed altogether, harkening back to the swashbuckling days of Errol Flynn. Good looking, dashing, noble, the Rockaway Pirates are masters of melodious mischief! They can typically be found near the beach, enjoying the sounds of summer, listening to the sirens of mermaids. They may look dangerous, but in fact are quite honest and hardworking. Many of these modern-day Pirates are actually involved in mentoring kids, even if they do fly the skull and crossbones on the Jolly Roger! For those who may not remember Errol Flynn pirate movies, perhaps you remember the movie, The Princess Bride? The actor, Cary Elwes, plays the Dread Pirate Roberts: dashing, and extremely good looking and in love with his princess who has been kidnapped by the evil prince! With his friend, Inigo Montoya, they rescue the princess and they live happily ever after! But poor Inigo, after avenging his father, has no purpose. It is then that Cary tells him that he is retiring as a pirate and that Inigo would make a good Dread Pirate Roberts. Ah yes! More recent pirates include
Johnny Depp, dressed as Keith Richards, speaking in circles like Keith Richards, and wishing he could play guitar like Keith Richards in five Caribbean episodes! While Johnny is both dashing and good looking, he falls short on the Errol Flynn nobility scale. But nonetheless always seems to do the right thing either by his own conscience or by being forced by others. Then there are the pirates from Peter Pan! Every kid wants to be a pirate and sail the seven seas and find treasure and bury it! And to never grow up, these are the dreams of true pirates. Some pirates realize there are some concessions to be made and settle down like our friend the Dread Pirate Roberts after finding his Princess Bride, but a yoho-ho and a bottle of rum, pirate dreams are never truly out of reach! Not that a true pirate would ever become a farmer, but mooring the pirate ship for a while does have its benefits! I have found the Pirates of Rockaway to be up to the standards set by the ancient poll bearers. They are a fun loving, musical, happy lot, spreading merriment and optimism through acts of kindness, and serendipitous folly. You can catch them in full regalia at parades such as the Coney Island Mermaid Parade in June or Rockaway’s own Poseidon Parade in September. So, if you see one out and about in full pirate costume, tip your cap, because men, we all have a bit of pirate within us, and like Peter Pan, we never truly want to grow up!!

Big Plan Announced for Jamaica Bay
A major plan to improve Jamaica Bay was announced this week. On Monday, July 2, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection announced a $400 million plan to further improve the ecological health of one of the area’s most important bodies of water. DEP, local elected officials, community leaders and more gathered at Jamaica Bay on Monday to announce the good news. The plan includes an array of waterbody improvement projects including 50 acres of wetland restoration, seven acres of ribbed mussel installations, and environmental dredging, all of which will result in a healthier Jamaica Bay. The projects will also deliver economic, social and ancillary environmental benefits, including healthier air and lower summer temperatures due to the addition of a significant number of new trees and plants. The plan was submitted to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on Monday and if approved, planning and design could begin as soon as 2019. “This additional $400 million investment into Jamaica Bay is yet another step forward in making the bay healthier for the surrounding communities and the overall ecological health of New York City,” State
Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr., a member of the New York Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. “With this funding, DEP will be able to begin expanding several green infrastructure projects as well as restoring many acres of wetlands. I would like to thank DEP for their continued efforts to improve the health of Jamaica Bay through these various projects.” “The Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers fully support DEP’s Jamaica Bay Improvement Plan and commend them for their outreach to local environmental groups in crafting this proposal,” Dan Mundy of the Jamaica Bay Ecowatchers, said. “The numerous nature-based features incorporated in this plan, including wetlands and ribbed mussels, recognize the critical role these habitats play in naturally cleaning and filtering the waters of the bay. In addition, they host numerous species of fish, reptiles and birds and ultimately have a tremendous positive combined ecological effect on the entire bay. After years of advocating for the bay, it is very encouraging to see the numerous environmental projects ‘turning the tide’ on the health of the bay and producing water quality and a restored habitat that guarantees a thriving Jamaica Bay for future generations.”
DEP has already invested more than $1.5 billion to improve the health of Jamaica Bay. This includes large underground tanks at Paerdegat Basin and Spring Creek to store any sewer overflow during rainstorms, the restoration of 137 acres of wetlands and 442 acres of maritime forests/ grasslands through strategic partnerships and significant upgrades to the wastewater treatment plants that drain to the bay, including reducing nitrogen levels. Ongoing is a massive $1.9 billion project to build a storm sewer system in southeast Queens as well as green infrastructure at schools and public housing as well as parks, playgrounds and curbsides. All of this work has already resulted in significant improvements to the water quality in Jamaica Bay. “DEP has been a great partner in the effort to improve water quality and enhance wildlife habitats in Jamaica Bay,” Don Riepe, Director of the NE Chapter, American Littoral Society, said. “Over the past several years they have supported the Littoral Society's Restoration Corp, a green jobs youth program working on saltmarsh restoration and shoreline cleanup of marine debris in Jamaica Bay. We fully support their Long Term Control Plan to increase funding
for green infrastructure and living shorelines.” Over the last 150 years, New York City has lost approximately 85 percent of its historical wetland coverage, a significant amount of this within the Jamaica Bay watershed. These important natural areas serve as a protective transitional area between a body of water and dry land. Wetlands are extremely valuable as they help to absorb storm surge, filter impurities from the water, increase dissolved oxygen levels, reduce coastal erosion, capture greenhouse gases and serve as a productive ecological habitat and nursery for juvenile fish. Wetlands are among the most productive natural areas on earth and are particularly important in urban waters. In order to continue restoring these essential functions to Jamaica Bay, DEP is proposing significant investments in the restoration of wetlands and salt marshes. Ribbed mussels have also proven to be particularly effective at filtering impurities from the water and the plan calls for substantial installations in several of the Jamaica Bay tributaries. In addition, DEP will continue to expand the successful Green Infrastructure program to the communities surrounding the bay.

SPOTTED: HERE AND ABROAD Kathleen and Bobby Zimmer broke out the coral Rockaway Times t-shirts in Ireland because how much green can a place take?! They look magically delicious. Stateside, Bobby Mulholland and his daughter looked musically delicious and fit as fiddles in their RT shirts. We didn’t know there were fiddle camps in Maine (or anywhere else for that matter) until we were sent this great photo! Father Jim Cunningham and students from St. Francis had a fantastic day at Great Adventure. Rumor has it he didn’t even realize he was wearing his favorite shirt when this photo was snapped. Ahoy, Joe ! At first glance, Joe Young of the 100th Precinct Community Council looks like he’s in Navy whites at the Mystic Seaport, but it’s the spiffy white RT t-shirt he’s rocking. And keeping with the maritime theme, an entire crew took over a boat in the British Virgin Island. John Sattler and friends rocked the full variety of Rock Times tops. Awesome! Oh, and the Sattler crew left a Rockaway Times t-shirt hanging in the famous Foxy’s Bar. If you drop in, sign it and take a pic!

Climate For A Roast
This past Sunday, I happened to bump into one of my younger neighbors and, after exchanging pleasantries, I blurted out, "Hot enough for you?" As soon as the question left my mouth, I immediately regretted asking it as I knew full well that this particular neighbor is a not only a diehard vegan and a card-carrying tree-hugger, but also a devout disciple of the religion of pending apocalyptic climate change. "Better get used to it...", my friend replied, "Climate change is a global matter. The planet is warming because of the growing level of greenhouse gas emissions from your activities. If this trend continues, truly catastrophic consequences are likely to ensure from rising sea levels, scarcity of fresh water, increased numbers of more powerful storms and more heat waves. It is a slow-moving civilization-ending cataclysm of your making!" Recognizing that my friend's flushed face and waving hands were a fairly good indication of a pending and loud polemic regarding my alleged abuses of the planet, I tried to tone the rhetoric down a notch by stating that perhaps we could simply recognize that, as we are now entering the "dog days" of summer, this kind of heat should be neither unex-
pected nor overly worrisome. Yeah, that worked really well! Bordering on apoplexy, my friend managed to blurt out, "Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the earth and the earth is dying. You are a murderer!" Realizing that perhaps a strategic retreat was my best course of action, I wished my friend farewell and then walked away singing the words to Irving Berlin's 1933 song "Heat Wave" just loud enough to be heard by my friend, "We're having a heat wave, a tropical heat wave, the temperature's rising, It isn't surprising, she certainly can can-can. She started a heat wave, by letting her seat wave in such a way that the customers say that she certainly can can-can." And speaking of tropical heat waves and such, be sure to bring your family and friends and enjoy yet another VFW Post BBQ on Saturday, July 14, replete with the requisite hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, a great view of the bay and the Manhattan skyline and, did I forget to mention? A fabulous pig roast! Now before you start thinking to yourself “C'mon, it’s just another BBQ,” consider the following. A pig roast or “hog cooking” as it is often referred to, is an ancient tribal ritual practiced around the world. Although around these parts the words alone invoke casual summertime pleasure (the taste of ice cold draft beer, the smell of wafting smoke infused with the aroma of cooking pork, the comfortable feel of a soon to be greasy t-shirt, the ubiquitous summertime sound of flip-flops, the constant (and annoying) questions of “is it ready yet?” etc.), they tend to overshadow the fact that, in reality, a pig roast is an elaborate community affair requiring ingenuity and copious amounts of elbow grease. No, this is certainly not just another BBQ, it’s a PIG ROAST, a veritable sensory overload of pork gone hog wild!
3 Bed, 2.5 Bath duplex with parking & garage with laundry in unit---$2,600 2 Bed, 1 Bath duplex w/ ocean views---$2,150
Think about it…you have to dig the pit days before the roast - no easy feat in itself, fire it up in the wee hours on the morning of the roast to get the stones and charcoal hot without burning the block down, dress and wrap the pig and put it on the hot coals without causing burns to yourself or others, bury the pig with insulating dirt and then let it cook low and slow for…well... the pig will be ready when the pig is ready. Remember, the pig is in control, not you…the pig abides! Of course, then there is the fun part. You dig up the pig and eat it! Of course, in addition to the roast pig, there will be the usual BBQ staples of cold beverages, hot dogs, and hamburgers with all the fixings for those of you who may be too timid to sample a recently unburied cooked dead pig. And for all you vegetarians and vegans out there, we will also have the requisite rabbit food - corn, salad, and watermelon, but, c’mon…why bother? It’s $20 for adults,
$10 for children and tykes 5 and under can sneak in free! All are welcome. Don’t miss it! As always, all proceeds will go to benefit our veterans. If you have never enjoyed roast pig before, stop by the V.F.W. in Broad Channel between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, and I can guarantee that you are in for a special treat! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Ahhhhh Summer All at once the feeling changed on the peninsula. As it is every year. Yet always a pleasant surprise to me. And it’s all we all talk about. Settling in to the breeze, the sound of the waves on the shore, the neighbors and friends and visitors all out and greeting each other. Everything slows down in the summer. I open to observe all the little things around me. My senses open and awaken to feel the breeze, smell the ocean, touch the sand, hear the open air. If there is any time during
the year to take in some moments and relax, it is summer. No matter what happens, there is always the calm of the shoreline in the morning, and the sounds of the plovers and pretty soon the scurrying of the sandpipers. Experiencing these things without thinking is a form of meditation — an aware mind and a heart open to all that is around. And when the mind and heart can rest in contemplation, the inner landscape gains a spaciousness sometimes otherwise constricted. You can see it as
The Rockaway Times
the open beach and ocean in front of you — spaciousness — rather than a lot of buildings and cement—constriction. The light of the sun stays with us into the evening, which is a blessing for those of us who have day commitments. The evening is a different experience as if the day has opened and is going toward the closing of the night. Whatever is your experience at whatever time of day, it is THE time to stop, be present and take it all in. Summer is the time to find peace in simple things. The really simple things. Summer is the time to think about what is really important to you in your life. Summer is the time to acknowledge the world as it is and send a big spacious heart to those who need it. Summer is the time to take stock of the rest of the year and decide what should be carried in to the fall and next year. Summer is the time to just be. Summer is the time to make fresh mint tea or fresh lemonade and sit in the shade and enjoy it. Summer is the time to discover something
new and different—whatever that may be. Summer is the time to acknowledge the sun as the “grower” of plant life around us. Without the sun there is no life. Summer is the time to take a bike ride. Summer is the time to make pesto from the basil plants that are becoming enormous. Summer is the time to be outside at night and look up at the brilliant stars and constellations. Summer is a time to wake up early because the sun beckons you. Summer is a time…Whatever summer is to you, make it happy and simple and nourishing to your body, mind and heart. May you be happy. May you be free. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

Rockaway’s Reading A GREAT SUMMER BEACH READ By Martha and Jack Rossi
When I was young, I saved my lunch money so that I could buy the newest Beatles’ and Stones’ records as soon as they were released because I knew I would love them, and I did. There are few authors that I will read every word they write, and jump at their newest novel. Fredrik Backman is one. I devoured his new Us Against You. A sequel to Beartown, it takes place immediately after the events of that book. It is brilliant. I can’t recommend it highly enough. “Everyone gets a stick. Two nets. Two teams. Us against you,” old hockey coach, Sune, explained to a young Peter Andersson to simplify the game of hockey. This simple three-word title tells us everything about a book about far more than simply hockey. Us - All joined by love, allegiance and a hard work ethos. Beartown: manipulative city
councilman, Richard Theo, who plots for power and alcoholic widow barkeep, Ramona, who is the mother figure for all distressed children. Beartown’s hockey club: General manager, Peter Andresson, still dealing with the rape of his daughter, and forced to make concessions that endanger his family to keep his hockey club alive. Elizabeth Zackell, the unorthodox new coach, who doesn't understand emotions. The players: Benji Ovich, the tough as nails star, who is keeping a secret, young Amat, small but fast, who is trying to skate his way out of his Hollows’ slum, goalie, Vidar, released from a facility he was sentenced to for a lack of impulse control, and huge lovable Bobo, a little slow on the ice and off it, who is dealing with his mother’s terminal cancer. The black jacketed “hooligan” Pack: Woody, Spider and their leader, Teemu Rinnius, Vidar’s older brother,
who are devoted Beartown hockey fans known for their violence and willingness to help those in need. Family: the Andressons, father Peter, mother, lawyer, wife, Kyra, who has suppressed her dreams for those of her husband and their children, Maya damaged by rape, her poetic songs reveal her struggles, and 12-yearold Leo who hates himself for being unable to protect his big sister. The Ovitches, Benji and his protective big sisters, Gaby and Adri, who sleeps with the key to the gun cabinet under her pillow to make sure Benji doesn't “take a rifle into the forest” like his father. Best friends, the hunter, Ana, who lives with her alcoholic father, and the musician, Maya. Against - competition, conflict, violence, a tragic accident, arson, hostility and the slow erosion of a marriage. You - Hed, the big city and main competition for jobs and in hockey. William Lyt, the Hed hockey
star, who will savagely beat someone but not causing permanent damage. Best friends divided by one’s vengeful cruel betrayal. The town of Beartown looking for scapegoats and anonymously punishing victims. Each other. Backman's characters are three-dimensional, flesh and blood, complex and courageous. He knows the human condition and our motivations. In every chapter I found something that moved me, and made me marvel at how he could be so insightful, whimsical and heartfelt. You don’t have to read Beartown before Us Against You, if you do, I envy you for having such a wonderful reading adventure in front of you. This is my favorite Backman book, and that is saying something. I think it is his Sgt. Pepper or Exile on Main Street. As always, feedback and book recommendations can be sent to RTCOVERINGBOOKS@ HOTMAIL.COM.

Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Off Label In December 1993, the FDA granted approval of the use of gabapentin, then sold under the brand name Neurontin, for the treatment of partial seizures. Today, largely thanks to off-label uses of the drug, gabapentin has become the seventh most commonly prescribed medication in the United States. Off-label use of a drug is using it to treat a condition despite that use being unapproved by the FDA. While not specifically illegal, off-label use of medications may be unethical and, in some cases, dangerous. In May 2002, gabapentin was approved for use in treating the pain of post-her-
petic neuralgia (pain from a shingles infection). By far the most common use of gabapentin is in treating foot pain from diabetic neuropathy. While the use of gabapentin to treat this condition has been mostly successful, the use of gabapentin for this condition is unapproved by the FDA. In other words, this is an off-label use of the drug. Since 2004, multiple manufacturers have introduced gabapentin-related medications to treat a host of illnesses and conditions. For example, Lyrica (pregabilin) has received FDA approval for use in diabetic neuropathy, postherpet-

ic neuralgia, partial seizures, fibromyalgia, and nerve pain from spinal cord injuries. The extensive use of gabapentin for a wide variety of conditions beyond those formally approved by the FDA is most likely due to off-label marketing. In 2004, Warner Lambert (a manufacturer of gabapentin) settled litigation for $430 million and admitted guilt in connection to charges that the company illegally promoted gabapentin for uses unapproved by the FDA (while off-label use of a product is not illegal, advertising or marketing off-label use is illegal). Off-label marketing included educational programs, unrestricted grants to medical education companies, physician speakers, industry-funded studies, and advertising in publications. The history of gabapentin raises serious questions about how the U.S. healthcare system responds when there is widespread off-label use of a product. Ideally, the FDA should approve medications based on limited clinical data and then
The Rockaway Times allow physicians to use their clinical skills to test and formally evaluate new indications for drug usage. In the case of gabapentin, multiple clinical studies were published evaluating gabapentin for off-label use. These studies then increased off-label use and eventually off-label advertising. Regulatory oversight and surveillance efforts were missing in action leading to an upward spiral that eventually came to legal action. Today, 25 years after the initial FDA approval of gabapentin, there is still limited evidence that supports the widespread off-label uses of the drug. The history of gabapentin use illustrates how additional regulatory oversight and postmarketing surveillance might have led to a more coordinated evaluation of the drug and could have led to use of the drug based on clear-cut medical evidence thereby allowing patients and clinicians to enjoy improved clinical evidence-based care. Life Eclectic Apparel is a clothing and accessories company established in 2016 in Rockaway Beach by Liz Speer. They have three main product categories: • Men’s and women’s graphic t-shirts and sweatshirts, with hand-painted Rockaway Beach designs, which are screen printed one at a time in Rockaway, by the way. And the popular sunset photo T-shirt that features a photo taken here in Rockaway Beach in the letters. • Handmade beachwear designed and sewn in Rockaway. Many prints/ patterns on garments and accessories were also hand-painted then put into a repeat pattern. • Vintage Revived Denim jackets with hand-weavings. Speer hand-weaves the fabric that is up-cycled from the waste from the garment industry in Manhattan.
plans for the business, creates a distinct unique line. Everyone knows that Rockaway is a summer destination, which means the other three seasons can be a little slow. The challenge is finding products that fill a need for locals that live here year-round. We also have great resources here such as the Rockaway Business Alliance and Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach, that uplift the local businesses and provide a support system. We are very happy to have our products carried in The Blue Bungalow and Boarders since the beginning! We have been looking into expansion but ever-rising rent prices pose another challenge for doing business in Rockaway. So expansion may take place in another form. On Nutrition PLASTIC FREE JULY By Megan Casper
Did you know it’s Plastic Free July? The mission: to refuse single-use plastic for the month of July. While there’s tons of packaging we throw away each day, food packaging makes up a huge chunk of it. About two-thirds of our daily trash comes just from prepping three meals a day and maybe a few snacks. With such a large portion of trash coming from the kitchen, we have the opportunity to make a huge impact by looking at how we prepare our food. Check out a few ideas below on how you can reduce your waste, a little bit at a time. 1. Bring Your Own Bags: While plastic bags can be recycled, they require a different type of processing so don’t chuck them in your normal recycling, as these flimsy things can gunk up machinery. Many grocery stores offer collections for them outside. Even better than recycling, try bringing your own. While a plastic bag seems like a small thing to throw away, most plastic bags end up in the trash, or worse, blow out into the ocean. For day-today shopping, stash a few strong tote bags in the back of your car that will fold up when they’re not needed or try heavy-duty collapsible plastic crates. For on the go, quick surprise trips, stash
AJI RAB
a tiny bag that rolls up into your purse or briefcase. 2. Buy A Reusable Water Bottle: In 2016, the average American used 167 disposable water bottles but only recycled 38. That’s a lot of bottles ending up in the landfill! Waste aside, bottled water is expensive compared to tap, and it’s tested once a week versus the once a day testing of local tap water. If you hate the taste of tap, using a pitcher with a filter or installing a filter on your tap will cost far less in the long run than buying bottles. Not only is quitting plastic bottles good for the earth, it’s good for you too. If you’re toting a water bottle around you’ll be way more likely to drink more water, plus a stainless steel water bottle or glass water bottle will keep drinking water pure and free of chemicals that leach from plastics. 3. Bring Your Own Shopping Containers: While this may sound like a lot of work,

it really doesn’t have to be. Loads of great products have come out to make this task easy peasy, like reusable mesh bags for produce. You can also try bringing glass containers with a strong lid to keep things safe while you bring them home. While you may get some odd looks at first, the meat, deli, or fish counter is a great place to start with this. Ask them to tare (zero out the scale) before adding the food and you’re good to go. It’s that simple! 4. Try Alternative Food Wraps: Plastic wraps so much of our food, and most of it is single use and not recyclable. Before you reach for a ziplock, would a small reusable glass Pyrex work just as well? Also consider mason jars, which are waste free and also Instagram ready. Try wrapping sandwiches in wax paper or parchment instead of baggies. Need to wrap something up and you really, really need plastic wrap? Try out Bee’s wrap, which is muslin coated in beeswax, which can be reused - plus it has antimicrobial properties to keep food fresh too! 5. Shop the Bulk Section: While these can be hard to find, you can get great staples at much lower prices. Bulk sections can usually be found at your local natural food store. The Georgetown Fairway also has a bulk section. 6. Shop Your Local Farmers Market: Farmer’s markets are a great place to find food that isn’t already wrapped in tons of plastic. Food is fresh, local, more flavorful, and you’re supporting your neighbors. Plus many farmers markets will take back containers for reuse. Check out Edgemere Farm (open Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or sign up for the Rockaway Buying Club (www. rockawaybuyingclub.com). 7. Vote with Your Wallet: Some packaging is more environmentally friendly than others. Some materials can
be endlessly recycled, like glass, steel, aluminum and copper. Paper can be recycled about five to seven times. So you can still purchase items at the store, like glass and canned goods, and know they will be recycled and used again. The real problem? Plastic. Did you know that plastic can usually only be recycled once? Many recycled plastics are downcycled into non-recyclable plastics, like clothing and plastic lumber, which all eventually end up in the landfill or the ocean. Try to buy what you can in non-plastic containers, fill what you can in your own containers, and remember that many things wrapped in plastic in those center aisles of the grocery store aren’t the best for you anyway. 8. Reduce Food Waste: Throwing out food waste is another way we add to landfills. Per the USDA, 30-40 percent of the food produced in America ends up wasted. The labor, resources and energy that go into the production of this wasted food has an environmental cost and as food rots this also quickly produces methane, making landfills the third largest source of methane in the United States. Some ways you can reduce food waste are to buy only the quantities that you need, donate what you can spare to food banks and pantries, and “recycle” food by making a soup, feeding it to your pets, or composting and fertilizing your garden. Remember, like all good habits you can start slow. Maybe try bringing a tote shopping this week or seeing where you can stash one in your car. Try out a reusable bottle. What do you think you can try this week? Megan Casper, M.S., RDN, CDN is a dietitian and owner of Nourished Bite Nutrition based in Rockaway, NYC. Visist www.nourishedbite.com for more info.

The opening of the steel girder center lift span inlet bridge, from Brooklyn’s Flatbush Avenue extension over to Riis Park, made life a little easier for west enders and Rockaway Pointers. Dubbed the Marine Parkway Inlet Bridge back then, “Gil Hodges Memorial” was added to honor a great Brooklyn Dodger and New York Mets baseball player and manager. A municipal ferry service was discontinued in 1937. Katie Lucev is the daughter of the late Rockaway Beach Historian, Emil R. Lucev, Sr. (1933-2018)

As a part of the ongoing effort to recover from Hurricane Sandy, NPS assessed the condition of building 69, reviewed the park’s long term plan for the Ryan Visitor’s Center, and compared the condition and costs for both buildings. NPS determined that the rehabilitation of the Ryan Visitor Center would better meet the long term plan for the park and a decision was made to rehabilitate it for office use and thus move park offices out of building 69. NPS then considered the future of building 69. Alternatives including mothballing, rehabilitation for a new use, and demolition were considered. NPS determined that for the foreseeable future, it has no viable use for the building and has determined that the demolition of building 69 is the best option.
The proposed demolition is subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), which requires federal agencies to consider the effects of their actions on historic properties. The NPS has determined that the proposed demolition of building 69 will have an adverse effect on the Floyd Bennett Field Historic District. As required by NHPA, the NPS has notified the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation of the adverse effect, is consulting with New York State Historic Preservation Office, and has drafted a Memorandum of Agreement to that effect. Public comments are welcome. You can share your comments from July 3 through July 15 (14 days) on the website (parkplanning.nps.gov/gate) or by mail: Office of the Superintendent, Gateway National Recreation Area, Fort Wadsworth, Attn: Floyd Bennett Field, Building 69, 210 New York Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305.

Family Support
“Families Belong Together” was the main message of the Rockaway Women for Progress’ event on Monday, July 2. Dozens gathered at the Beach 94th Street performance space to support humane treatment of border children and reunification with their families.
There were many speakers including Father Jim Cunningham, Rabbi Marjorie Slome, Holocaust survivor Ruth Pagirsky and more. Children also had the opportunity to write letters to children separated at the border. Photo by Paul Lurrie.

Volunteers Needed! Help Veterans & Special Athletes Surf with AmpSurf AmpSurf is coming to town, and you can be a part of this great cause that helps veterans and those with special needs by becoming a volunteer. AmpSurf is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Organization, made up of amputees, veterans, and friends and families of the disabled, that gives people the ability to surf with adaptive surf equipment. The goal of AmpSurf is to “Promote, Inspire, Educate, and Rehabilitate people with disabilities,” especially veterans. This summer, they’ll be assisting the wounded warriors of the Hope for the Warriors program and Rockaway Special Athletes. However, as an organization that relies on donations and the help of volunteers, they could use some helping hands. On July 13 and 14, the wounded warriors will be in town with Hope for the Warriors and they’ll be participating
in adaptive water activities, including surfing on Beach 219th Street in Breezy Point from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., both days. On July 28 at Beach 67th Street, AmpSurf will be helping the Rockaway Beach Special Athletes from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Then they’ll be back there again on August 45, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to once again teach the Special Athletes how to surf, along with local veterans. In order to make
these events a success, AmpSurf is searching for male and female surfers and water persons to train as instructors and volunteers. They’ll be holding a new instructor training and refresher course for return volunteers on Thursday, July 12, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Point Breeze Fire Station, 1 Fireman’s Way, Breezy Point. To register as an instructor, volunteer or participant, go to
the AmpSurf Web site: www. AmpSurf.org. You must register as an instructor, volunteer or participant for each event. To register: Go to AmpSurf.org; click on East Coast; check date or dates you will be attending as an instructor, volunteer or participant; fill in personal information; check submit. There is no fee for participants. AmpSurf also relies heavily on donations to run these events. Check out the website for information on how to donate. Money will help to pay for updating equipment, beach permits, insurance, gas, food and expenses. Amazon prime members can also register with Amazon Smile. Amazon will donate .05 percent of your orders to AmpSurf. Encourage your friends and family shop on Amazon Prime and donate to AmpSurf. For more information, call or text John Roberts at 917-7348711.
