Jennifer Keim Wins 2nd Annual Photo Contest It was a splash that made a splash. Jennifer Keim’s beautiful photo of a wave splashing a bulkhead, with a sunset and the Breezy Point Lighthouse in the background, captured the kind of magic that was too irresistible for judges not to award Jennifer the grand prize of $500, in the second annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest. The final round of judging was held at Caracas on the boardwalk and Beach 106th Street on Sunday, July 2. Fifteen photos made it to this last day of judging and all poster-sized pics were displayed on the concession’s picnic tables. After judges gave all a close look, Jennifer’s photo, along with Joe Seminara’s photo of his daughter on a surfboard and Greg DeBoer’s sunlit

lecting a winner. Joe Seminara’s photo (also seen on the cover of The Rockaway Times’s Summer
Guide) earned top runner-up and with the honor came two dinner cruise tickets courtesy of Hornblower, the NYC Ferry operator. Greg DeBoer took third prize and a free 30-day ferry pass. The contest drew more than 1,000 photos and 30 of the best were made into durable posters and affixed to the boardwalk for beachgoers to admire. The Rockaway Times got generous help from the NYC Parks Department, the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, the Rockaway Artists Alliance, and Hornblower/NYCFerry, and it couldn’t have happened without John Cori, who organized the whole thing. Congratulations to Jennifer and thanks to all who submitted photos and supported this fantastic event!

A Patriotic Parade The beach blocks from Newport Avenue to the beach wall on Beach 131st Street held their 27th Annual Fourth of July RagTag Parade. A large crowd participated in the festivities. The parade began with a reading of the names of all the neighbors who perished on 9/11/01 and 11/12/01, and was then proceeded by a march to the beach. Vincent Murphy rallied all the participants by playing patriotic music as the participants marched down 131st Street from the corner of Newport Ave and 131st Street. Six-yearold Keira Coyne led the parade group to the beach wall. Steve Cannon followed Keira with his car loaded with enthusiastic
participants. The marchers were greeted by a cheering throng of neighbors at “Old Glory Plaza.” Parade Chairman Hank Iori greeted everyone. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kristen Franchuck. Updates on the happenings on the block were reported and several new neighbors were welcomed to the block, including Joe and Mary Harkins and Kraig and Jen DeMattis. The festivities ended as neighbors shared some time saying hello and preparing to spend their day on the beach. An enjoyable time was had by all and the festivities of the day continued all day and night on the beach!

Bottoms Up Every year or so I stand on my toilet (because I really don’t know what a soapbox is) and make a public service announcement. It’s time you or someone you love schedule a colonoscopy. Most of what follows is from an old column but running it again is part of the annual routine. For you holdouts, those of you who’ve passed the age of 40, certainly 50, and haven’t had the personal roto-rooter, it’s time. Just do it. It’s plain sensible and you can get in on the joke. I’d like to use the expression, all kidding aside — but you can’t put all kidding aside. It’s the procedure which makes comedians out of every patient. Gastro docs have heard it all. “Tell my wife you didn’t find my head up there.”
“Now I know how a muppet feels.” “You put your left hand in, you take your left hand out…” “Captain Kirk, you’re boldly going where no man has gone before.” If the two doctors I’ve had are representative of the field, they’re among the most affable docs you could find. The first guy I went to in Brooklyn had a phone number of 718748-SHIT. That’s pretty good marketing – how could you forget that number. While behind me, so to speak, he discovered a polyp and announced, “We’re engaged.” That meant I’d be seeing him again. But it was a good thing it was caught when it was. This was more than 10 years ago. That one-time polyp got caught and hasn’t been seen since. Of course, colonoscopies and its weird cousin, the colonic, have become hip since the doctor first landed on my moon. You’ve got Katie Couric, Leo DiCaprio,
Gwyneth Paltrow and others extolling the wonders of the colon clean out. And I gotta say, you do feel like a million bucks when it’s all over. Just don’t make plans the night before. Even the directions on the nuclear stuff you take says, don’t worry, it will work. Be patient. If you need something from the store, send someone else to get it. Once the purge starts, you are … as the door on the airplane says, occupado. And word to the wise, never trust a cough, sneeze or even a giggle. When the fun starts, just remember it’s for a good cause (and you don’t even have to start a non-profit). You’ll feel like a member of Congress at the State of The Union Address as you will stand and sit about a hundred times. The next morning, the day of the procedure, is the one time of year people can’t tell me I’m full of crap.
Some doctors give you the choice of remaining awake and watching the exploration on a nearby TV screen. I did it once but it was like watching a movie with a spring coming through the seat. I recommend the deep sleep. There’s less embarrassment if you suddenly get musical, so to speak. But in any case, just do it. You might literally prevent colon cancer. And by the way, compared to the night before, the actual procedure is a walk in the park. And as soon they’re done and you’re alert, you can make lunch plans. Anyway, like anybody who’s got a connection, I’ve got a guy. Not sure where to go or how to start? Email me and I’ll send you my guy’s info. It’s your health. Take care of this and join the club. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll have lots of crappy new jokes.

***** The Rockaway Times Photo Contest held its final judging round at Caracas on the Boardwalk on Sunday, July 2. What a wonderful community event! Brothers at the 106th Street concession and Caracas supplied free food and coffee for all who showed up for the photo contest wrap up. The 15 final photos were extraordinary and a fine reflection of just how talented the people are here. It was a great day and we’re glad that it will be a great Rockaway tradition! ***** Speaking of tradition, another one is on the calendar. The Rockaway Times Sandcastle Contest is set for Sunday, July 30. You don’t have to be a sculptor to have fun! Keep a look out in — where else? — The Rockaway Times for more details over the next few weeks. ***** Got gripes or suggestions for fer-
THURSDAY, JULY 6, 2017 ry service? You’re better off directing tweets and emails to the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) than Hornblower or NYCFerry. Their Twitter handle is @NYCEDC. ***** Speaking of the ferry, there is word that some people will be left at Pier 11 so 20 people who might be waiting at the Brooklyn Army Terminal can get on. The boat holds 149 people. Pier 11 weekend crowds four and five times that number line up to get to Rockaway. Our suggestion: skip Brooklyn on the weekends. Or better, have a ferry service Brooklyn to Rockaway only and run it from the 69th Street pier, not the Army Terminal. That’s our suggestion. (And we’ll tweet it). And our other suggestion is to use one of the Staten Island ferries during the summer months. And if they’re not ready for open seas or the Rockaway Dock couldn’t support such a large boat — at least bring back the 400-passenger vessel SeaStreak used. Oh, and one more: check the forecast and if it looks like sun, run the ferry every
20 minutes on weekends. ***** Every now and then a problem house causes real fear and anxiety for neighbors (illegal activities, illegal overcrowding, etc.) One particular house, 159 Beach 119th Street, has caused neighbors to ask for community help. Robby Schwach of Councilman Ulrich’s office said eviction proceedings can be sped up if he hears from more people. His contact info is: 718-318-6411 and rschwach@council.nyc.gov ***** Ok, it’s pretty clear anything is possible in politics these days but still…. It amazes us that Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo have national ambitions. Cuomo disbanded a public corruption commission and says he doesn’t know who runs the MTA but then declares a State of Emergency for the MTA. (Never mind his sending state troopers to Rockaway!) Oh, and the mayor? National ambitions? He’s got the height and charisma of George Pataki. ***** A higher class of panhandler?
Page 7 An elderly woman with a walker stopped people on Beach 116th Street the other day, saying, “Can you buy me a steak?” ***** Has the ferry helped some local businesses? Well, Rockaway Bagels on Beach Channel Drive ran out of bagels on Monday! ***** Reminder: Thrill In Camilla is Friday. See Page 38 for details. ***** We wrote about Choo-choo Charlie Ciliberti who, as a 10-year-old, was a political activist (giving the mayor advice and attending Parks Department hearings at City Hall) and a budding entrepreneur selling lemonade near the subway stop at Beach 90th. Well, fast forward two years and Charlie is still hustling. We met him at the ferry dock selling bottled water. ***** The Rockaway Gets Naloxone program, which educates and distributes the anti-overdose serum, Naloxone, has been such a success, that it is being extended to a year, rather than a four-month pilot program.

Rockaway’s First Book Bar Coming Soon
By Kami-Leigh Agard
Dreaming of an idyllic space where you can indulge in a glass
of wine (or beer) in one hand, a book in the other, all in the company of like-minded literary aficionados under an
amazing backdrop of books? Wake up and stop dreaming. One local resident has made this all a reality with her bookstore bar pop-up, Avoid The Day, where she will be serving up a languid cafe-like atmosphere and intimate space, where folks can grab a glass of wine or beer and read, buy a book or two and engage with each other, here in Rockaway. Avoid The Day is the brainchild of Arverne resident, Jianna Heuer, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist with a background in publishing, whose dream was to one day own a bookstore bar. “My husband, Jason and I are huge book enthusiasts and of course,
wine! After visiting similar establishments such as Lit Bar in the Bronx and the BookBar in Denver, Colorado, I was hooked and dreamed of one day owning my own,” Heuer said. The Heuers bought their first home in Rockaway last September. (See the Heuer’s profile, “Art of Becoming Local,” in The Rockaway Times 2017 Summer Guide on page 80). After exploring the community and “getting the sand between their toes,” Heuer was convinced that Rockaway was the perfect location for her beloved book bar. However, according to Heuer, now that she settled on opening her book bar in Rockaway, the baffling question was how?
“Though a brick-andmortar book bar is my ultimate goal, I thought maybe it would be best to test the waters to see how it would be received in the community. Jason and I bounced around the idea of a book truck, but we immediately dismissed that because the logistics would be difficult to maneuver. “After joining the Ladies of Business Rockaway Beach (LBRB), at a March meeting, I brought up my book bar idea and was overwhelmed by the encouragement I received. One member in particular, Rosa Stychek, offered to help with the business plan and together we made it happen! I settled on Continued on page 11

the idea of a pop-up, and after months of work, on June 12, we finally made it down to the Queens courthouse to apply for my business certificate, and Avoid The Day Pop-Up Book Bar became official!” Heuer said. According to Heuer, Avoid The Day is a multi-purpose space where locals can buy books for less than the cost of a beer, attend book readings of local authors, and engage in community activities for both children and adults. The book bar’s name, “Avoid The Day” came from an accidental text. Heuer said, “What was meant to read, “Have a good day,” autocorrected to “Avoid the day.” Jason and I loved this, as we were both headed to work and didn’t want to go, and the name stuck. Avoid the day with a book, a drink, a coffee, an activity, or at the beach. Avoid the Day in Rockaway!” The first pop-up will be on Sunday, July 16 from 12

Life rolls on, despite injury or disability. On Saturday, July 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., all are welcome to join for an event that warms the soul. Dozens of people with various disabilities, from paralysis to blindness, will be given the chance to surf with the help of many volunteers, and adaptive surfing equipment. Life Rolls On is bringing its They Will Surf Again program back to Beach 67th on Saturday. Life Rolls On was started by world champion quadriplegic surfer Jesse Billauer. After suffering from his own accident that left him paralyzed in 1996, Billauer found that life doesn’t have to stop after paralysis. Instead of letting it keep him down, Billauer found ways to ride the waves again despite his handicap by using adaptive surfing gear. In 2001, he founded Life Rolls On to show others that they can enjoy life as well despite paralysis or other disabilities. For the past few years, Life
Rolls On has brought They Will Surf Again to Rockaway to give people a chance to surf using adaptive surf equipment. The day is made possible with the help of local surf schools and surfers that volunteer, as well as everyday people who are willing to lend a helping hand. Volunteer registration is closed, but those interested in helping can sign up for a waiting list at the event. Otherwise, the event alone is something worth seeing. fantastic pieces of art. You might recognize Joe Seminara’s photo of his daughter, Maya, surfing. That was our choice for the

It’s an introvert’s dream. Being able to order food with minimal human interaction. And for businesses, it means more exposure and less tying up the phones during busy meal times. Many local businesses are utilizing smartphone apps and websites like Seamless, GrubHub, Eat24 and the latest local service, Uber Eats, to boost business and give customers a convenient way to order. Instead of looking around for that old paper menu and picking up the phone to call, you simply open up your app, select one of the local restaurants, pick items right from the menu, place your pickup or delivery order and pay right through the app. The restaurant receives a direct receipt of your order, either through email or on a tablet, and they prepare your food to your exact specifications. Many locals, especially younger generations, utilize apps or websites such as Seamless, GrubHub, Yelp’s Eat24 and now Uber Eats, to order food. And several local businesses are registered. Open up Seamless or GrubHub (owned by the same company) and you’ll find Cuisine by Claudette, Plum Tomatoes, The Fat Cardinal Bakery, Paninico Café, Chicks to Go, Surfside Bagel, Beach Bistro 96, Thai Rock, The Restaurant, Thai Kitchen by the Sea, and Magic Soul Food Inc., on the peninsula, and new to the app is Channel Market in Broad Channel. On Eat24 by Yelp, you’ll find many of the same restaurants, plus Joe’s Pizza. A few of these, plus Beach Bagels, have also signed up for the newcomer in town, Uber Eats, which utilizes its own drivers to pick up food from the restaurants and delivers for them. It just launched in Rockaway last week. Rockaway even has its own delivery app, Combrr, for beach
said. It has even given people who normally wouldn’t be able to go to a business, a chance to order. “We’ve gotten orders from people that are homebound. It’s a really nice way for them to be a part of what’s going on in the neighborhood,” Pagano said. Businesses have found it to be a way to keep up with the digital world, and make Mike Adil of Paninico holds a GrubHub things more conventablet. ient all around. “This is the future. PICO has been utilizing online ordering through its website, www.PICORBNY. com. New restaurants, Big Apple Chinese (www.bigapplerockawaypark.com) and Sakura Japanese Restaurant (www.215sakura.com) also have online ordering options. Businesses find that the apps give them exposure, especially to new customers, and they make the order process easier. Cuisine By Claudette’s was one of the first local businesses to utilize ordering apps. “At the time, it was a way to grow our business. We wanted to start doing full time delivery,” John Efrati of Cuisine by Claudette’s said, adding Well that’s one way to get that their order numbers had the message across! Businesses that utilize ordering apps and websites are subjected to fees, anywhere from 15 to 30 percent off each order total, but many say it’s worth getting their name out there. “It’s so worth it. At the end of the month, they take out what would be the equivalent of one to two orders out of 10, but we wouldn’t have had those 10 orders without the apps,” Pagano said. “I think every business should do this,” Efrati said.

Contest: A Miss and A Hit! Wow. Another Rockaway Times Photo Contest has drawn to a close last Sunday, July 2 at Caracas. It was so cool that this year’s contest winner, Jennifer Keim, took her winning shot with a smart phone! How far we've come. Big Congrats, Jennifer! As the final contest round got underway on Sunday morning, I was alerted to the fact that I failed to include one of the finalist's photos. I was in total shock! Yes, I messed up big time! Jessica Shulman's shot of lightning striking the Gil Hodges Bridge was indeed missing. I had taken down and included a similar shot of the bridge, minus the lightning of course. Jessica was devastated, as was I for her. Jessica had come and participated at every level and she came all the way from Brooklyn to participate. Jessica, my most sincere apologies! Thanks so much for under-
standing and being a great sport! Of course after being thrown a curveball, I failed to thank everyone who made the contest happen. So thank you to the judges: Debbie Valentino, Ozzie Edwards, Kathy Boyle, Reva Yacavone, Florence Ferguson, Michaela Cintron-Andrews, Dan Brown, Big Sal Cori, Alex Zablocki, Maribel Arroyo, Liam Kavanagh, Elana Eranberg and Shane Kulman. A huge thanks to NYC Rockaway Parks administrator, Portia Dyrenforth. (And the Parks crew who installed the photos on the boardwalk). Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanagh, Rockaway Artists Alliance (Dan Brown), the Jamaica Bay - Rockaway Parks Conservancy (Alex Zablocki), NYCFerry ( Elana Eranberg), and of course a huge thanks to The Rockaway Times, Kevin Boyle and all his staff, for making this crazy idea become a reality.

Ferry Fix Dear Editor: Imagine a plane taking off from JFK to LA with a stop in Chicago. Imagine that it’s first come, first served with no assigned seating. If it’s a full flight I would be quite sure that not many people from Chicago would arrive in LA. The same might be said of the residents of Sunset Park. Airlines have assigned seating with the possibility of standbys getting on the plane. This is how the ferry should be managed. The ticket machines should allow the ferry riders to pick
the time they want to ride. This would alleviate two problems: 1) Overcrowding and spending sometimes hours in line could be mostly eliminated. The only crowd beyond the ticket holders would be the standbys and they can line up in a separate line in hopes of getting on. It’s like the movie theater, if your show is sold out pick the next available one and punch out your ticket. If all ferries are sold out you know it’s time to take the train; and, 2) This would avoid any potential melee that would be sure to happen this summer on the return line from Rockaway. Can you imagine crowds of people after missing at least one ferry, having to deal with a crowd of kids coming from a party on a hot day after drinking all day? I can imagine them refusing to get in line and pushing to the front. This could get real bad, real fast. If it would be too expensive for NYC Ferry to change the machines,

they could give preference to tickets bought online, and those tickets they can monitor before the “sold out” sign goes up. Shaun Reen
Dunes and Lifeguards Dear Editor: How does this happen!? The dunes were heavily damaged on Sunday in the Beach 90s and on other sections of dunes on the peninsula as beachgoers lounged on them. It's obvious, something is wrong! Clear signs are needed to tell people to stay off the dunes. All the money spent on dunes will be wasted otherwise. I do hope NYC Parks will immediately rectify this very troubling situation and protection of the Rockaway peninsula’s dunes become a top priority for NYC Parks. This issue of damaged fencing was specifically ad-
The Rockaway Times dressed at the June 15 joint City Council hearing of the Parks, and the Resiliency and Recovery committees. (I presented photos!) It's public record! Also, for the second day in a row there were no lifeguards at the swimming beach of Beach 92nd-93rd. There were also many unguarded swimming beaches in the Beach 50s, 60s and 70s. These beaches have little to no erosion, so what is the excuse on these beaches? This practice of corralling thousands of people to other guarded swimming beaches many blocks away is extremely unfair. The burden of lifeguard shortages should be shared equally throughout the peninsula, not just by the neighborhoods east of Beach 116th Street. I sincerely hope NYC Parks acts fast! I hope they rectify this situation. Lack of lifeguards on public Continued on page 17

Asking a seasonal (nonCPR certified) NYC Parks Security Agent to singlehandedly keep thousands of swimmers out of the water in a red flagged beach is ludicrous! I sincerely hope NYC Parks will have fences up to protect the dunes and adequate lifeguard protection for the rest of the summer. John Cori
Thanks For the Support Dear Editor: I'd like to say thank you to Kevin Boyle and The Rockaway Times which has always supported the needs of Rockaway. I would also like to thank all those who joined us at the beach rally last Sunday. It was so nice
THURSDAY, JULY 6, 2017 to see so many of our neighbors and friends. We must all continue to fight for coastal protection. Each of us can make a difference by writing and calling our elected officials. Kevin has so graciously added a list of our elected officials on page four of every week’s newspaper. Everyone please do what you can by asking for rock jetties, reinforced berms/dunes and sand replenishment. We need these improvements to our shoreline immediately to prevent another hurricane disaster in the Rockaways. Amanda Agoglia
Photo Finish Dear Editor: Thanks for an amazing photo contest. Our daughter came in 2nd and is absolutely thrilled. You guys have found a great way to harness and express the great artistic culture that exists in Rockaway. Elizabeth Seminara
Naloxone Works Dear Editor: Rockaway Gets Naloxone has many people to thank for its successful four-month pilot project. We also want to announce that you will see more of us, because the NYCDOH has provided us with a full year of funding starting July 1st. First, thank you to Katie Honan of DNAInfo and Katie McFadden of Rockaway Times for their coverage. Thank you Chief Colleran of Roxbury's volunteer fire department, and Mary Colleran for gathering the Roxbury community together to receive critical overdose prevention information and the life-saving opioid antidote, naloxone. Similarly, thanks are due to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department as well as Dan Mundy Jr., John Cori and Hank Iori for enabling presentations at the Broad Channel and Rockaway Beach Civic Associations, and the Breezy Point Neighborhood Association. We also want to thank our City Councilors, Donovan Richards and
Page 17 Eric Ulrich for inviting us to educate their staff about the epidemic. Their continued support will be most welcome. Special thanks also to Felicia Johnson and Joseph Young of the 101st and 100th Precinct Community Councils for their support and to Gail Johnson of The Wave. Finally, many thanks to the First Congregational Church in Rockaway Beach for offering space on Wednesday evenings (7-8 PM) to provide free naloxone to community members. Plans are underway to use space at Thrive and on the Boardwalk as well. Look for us! Visit us! Contact us! (simmons@ndri. org or 212-845-4558) Janie Simmons

A Mighty Wind By Lou Pastina
In 2003 the guys who created the “Spinal Tap” movie produced the epic movie “A Mighty Wind” that was a "mocumentary" on the folk music scene in the sixties. The movie is pretty funny in the same tradition as some of the other movies that Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy have concocted such as “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show.” But the movie could also be the title of the current Rockaway weather pat-
tern, that is, rain or shine, there is a mighty wind that blows through these parts! I have written about this Sirocco before, that blows across the peninsula defying all logic, as it seems to come at you from every direction, especially if you are biking. Like the Libyan Desert that spawns these Zephyrs, these winds kick up sand (what’s left of it) and backyard umbrellas like they were Toto in the Wizard of OZ! Hard to figure out if this is the

new normal for Rockaway? Not that I am complaining, because when it’s 90 degrees in Manhattan and the A train is out again; it sure is nice to have that breeze blowing here cooling things down. But it does make bike riding and kayaking less fun. But maybe there will be a silver lining and maybe half of those coming to Rockaway on the ferry will take a break and give the residents a rest. But enough about winds, mighty and weak, let’s talk about the music part of the movie. Sometimes it’s easy to mock a guy with an acoustic guitar as being old-fashioned, but there is nothing old-fashioned about what goes on at Connolly’s every Tuesday night. The Open Mic, run by the ever-present Squidmeister Guy Nevirs, presents an excellent line-up of local musicians who just want to sing their songs. Some are part of bands and this Open Mic presents an opportunity to get away from the madness that is their band. But others are just guys who play and sing really well and don’t have an outlet to express their talent and explore the chance to perform
The Rockaway Times live. There are sometimes more musicians than fans on Tuesday, but it is a supportive group that typically stays after they finish playing to listen to those that follow. At the risk of spoiling a fun scene, it really is a good time, and Connolly’s does a great job of hosting with the friendliest bartenders in Rockaway. Every so often, a ringer gets thrown into the mix and you know you are witnessing something special. Occasionally, a harmonica player, a bass player, or even a penny whistle player will drift up and play with someone they hardly know and transform a song. In addition, the ringmaster of the evening is an expert singer and guitarist and kicks off each night, breaking the proverbial ice for all the others. So when those mighty winds blow you from the shores, and it’s a Tuesday night, float over to Connolly’s for an experience that is as close to the Greenwich Village coffee house scene from the 60’s that you will ever get. Of course you could rent the movie too, but that would not be as much fun, trust me!!

Facts You Probably Don’t Need
ROCKING THE LIMITED!
The birth flower for July is the water lily. The month of July was named after Julius Caesar. The “dog days of summer” refer to the weeks between July 3 and August 11 and are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the Canis Major constellation. The ancient Greeks blamed Sirius for the hot temperatures, drought, discomfort, and sickness that occurred during the summer. In the summer heat, the iron in France’s Eiffel Tower expands, making the tower grow more than six inches.
We ordered just a few of these Rockaway Times shirts for tiny tikes and Thomas Anderson, 2, looks so good we hesitated to put the photo in the paper because we’re sure there’s gonna be a huge demand! Rock on, Thomas!
Scientists argue that summer babies are significantly more likely to suffer from mood swings than babies born in other seasons. Contrary to popular belief, crime rates do not increase
during the summer. However, the types of crimes change as the seasons change. For example, during the summer, bike thefts and items stolen from cars increase. During the winter, criminals are more likely to steal cars and Christmas presents left in cars The most dangerous time to go to the hospital is during the summer, especially July. The most experienced medical residents graduate and leave hospitals in July, just as new physicians (or last year’s medical students) arrive. Death rates increase between eight to 24 percent in July. The population of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina jumps from 30,000 to over 350,000 in the summer months.

The Rockaway Youth Task Force Urban Farm and Community Garden is a hot source, in more ways than one. The garden has been a great spot for community members to grow their own produce, and now, some of their own products will be used in hot sauce. On June 22, Small Axe Peppers unveiled Queens 7 Hot
Sauce at a community kickoff event at the Queens Botanical Gardens. The creators behind the popular Bronx Hot Sauce, are now finding inspiration in Queens. They’ll be using jalapeùo peppers sourced from local Queens gardens and urban farms, including the Rockaway Youth Task Force Urban Farm (RYTF) and Community Garden. The Queens 7 Hot Sauce will be available for sale in the fall at more than 200 locations in the tri-state area and customers can pre-order bottles online at www.queens7hotsauce.com for $10 dollars plus a $5 dollar shipping fee. For those who can't wait to taste the sauce, samples will be available at the RYTF Farm Stand (310 Beach 58th Street) on Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

BBQ FOR A HEALTHIER YOU By Megan Casper
Barbecue season is in full swing! Grilling can be a tasty and lean way to cook food, but before you fire up the grill, check out our top tips for a BBQ that’s tasty and good for you. Dial down the heat: Before you slap some meat on the barbie, dial down the heat. When proteins in meat, chicken and fish are cooked at searing temperatures, carcinogenic compounds called heterocyclic amines, or HCAs, form. That delicious crunchy char can up your risk for colon, breast, prostate and other types of cancer. To reduce your risk, grill meat at lower temperatures and flip frequently to prevent excessive charring. Marinade: Not only will marinating meat add a ton of flavor, it also greatly reduces the formation of another cancer causing compound, polycyclic aro-
matic hydrocarbons or PAHs. Acidic marinades with vinegar or lemon juice help tenderize meat and reduce PAHs, or try basting your pork shoulder with a dark brew. One study found that marinating with dark beer reduced these cancer-causing compounds by 53 percent! Adding spices to hamburgers or rubbing meats with garlic, rosemary, black pepper, and turmeric is another flavorful way to reduce PAHs. Trimming fat to avoid flare-ups and smoke also lowers levels of this carcinogen. If you love sweet BBQ sauce, add it after cooking, as grilling with it can actually triple the amount of HCAs formed. Keep it safe: We’ve all been there. You get to a BBQ, put your potato salad down on the table and it sits there - for hours. Unfortunately bacteria in food love hot summer temperatures, so it’s best to follow the “when in doubt,
throw it out” rule after a plate has sat out for two hours. While cooking, use an instant thermometer to make sure food gets to the right internal temperatures. (Cheat sheet - Hamburgers: 160. Chicken: 165. Beef, pork and fish: 145. Any leftovers need to be reheated to 165). Try to keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold by using insulated dishes or resting dishes in a tray of ice and refilling when necessary, or put fresh bowls of perishable foods like salads and meats out in batches. Eat your veggies: Grilling veggies doesn’t make PAHs or HCAs, so grill a Portobello mushroom instead of a burger, make your own shish kebabs or grill up some peaches or nectarines for dessert. Vegetables retain more vitamins when they’re grilled versus fried or boiled, and eating foods rich in antioxidants add cancer-fighting phytochemicals to a meal. BBQ salads don’t have to be
laden with mayo. Try mixing up a fresh cucumber and tomato salad or blend chickpeas with lemon and basil for some homemade hummus. Choose your cut: Choosing 90 percent lean ground meat over 80 percent ground beef can save nearly a 100 calories per burger and nearly halves the amount of artery-clogging saturated fat. To keep burgers moist, try adding egg whites, breadcrumbs, or veggies like diced onions, tomatoes or mushrooms. Avoid processed meats like hot dogs and bacon, which have been found to drastically raise the risk of cancer. Down the Rabbit Hole with a Rockaway Times T-Shirt!
I recently was lucky enough to acquire one of the newest Rockaway Times t-shirts, which, in my humble opinion, is the best design to date, especially with the iconic RT bicycle featured prominently on both the back and front of the shirt. I should also add that the color preference of our
esteemed publisher, Kevin Boyle, still remains steadfast with bright, Day-Glo, orange. My beloved Grace took one look at it and said, "That t-shirt's so bright you gotta wear shades!" I even mentioned to Kevin that had I gotten my hands on this t-shirt a week earlier I could have worn it in the recent Mermaid Parade! The ever sensitive Mr. Boyle immediately quipped, "You at the Mermaid Parade? There's an image I can't get out of my mind!" Talk about a micro aggression! Emotionally devastated by Kevin's bon mot, I tumbled down a rabbit hole of angst and hurt feelings and found myself over in Princeton, New Jersey where, thank the gods of progressive academia, I was immediately granted access to a safe space along with some coloring books, Play-
Doh and a dog to pet. I was assured that I could use this space to assuage my hurt feelings in a calm and supportive atmosphere among the similarly afflicted. I immediately had misgivings regarding my decision to visit this safe space as the dog was continually peeing all over the floor, the Play-Doh was stale and hard, they told me I could not keep my coloring book and the continual sounds of the Linda Ronstadt's "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" pulsing from the room's speakers proved just a wee bit too much for me to endure. The real deal breaker came when I inquired if there was any cold beer to be had. I was firmly advised that only pure, healthy, mountain spring bottled water would be made available to sate my thirst. I politely declined the offer
of bottled water and calmly explained to the student that, although neither widely known by the general public nor advertised by either the government or bottled water manufacturers, he and his brother and sister snowflakes should be aware that their drink of choice contains dangerous levels of Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO), a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of Continued on page 29

BETWEEN THE BRIDGES
Continued from Page 28 DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol. I cautioned that DHMO is a very strong solvent. It is present in 100 percent of all poisons. Inhaled, it can kill you within four minutes. In its gaseous state, it can cause serious burns. I recommended that they do some research into this issue and read the history of another safe space advocate, Jim Jones, who killed 900 of his "Peoples Temple" cult back in 1978 down in his "safe space" in Jonestown, Guyana by having his followers drink copious amounts of Kool-Aid containing DHMO along with other dangerous chemicals. After thanking the student supervisor and his dog for their hospitality, I headed back to Broad Channel, but not before I saw the bottled water being locked away in
THURSDAY, JULY 6, 2017 a closet and the student safe space supervisor quickly leaving the area heading to the university library muttering to himself, "Oh my God... DHMO, acid, burns, Jim Jones, Peoples Temple..." At the time all I could think was "Obviously liberal arts...no science or American history classes for this laddie!" Having failed to attain emotional healing via university safe space visit, arriving back in Broad Channel I decided to follow the advice of Rockaway Times columnist, Helen Kilgallen ("Be Well Be Happy"), who recommends that, when emotionally stressed, we should all make special time for ourselves to retreat from our nor-

mal everyday lives...pause and step off the hamster wheel of life one might say...so that we may emerge once again ready to return to life with a new and fresh perspective. Accordingly, I stopped by the VFW on Shad Creek Road for a couple of ice cold draft beers (containing safe levels of DHMO) and some rational conversation with individuals whose idea of a safe space is an armored personnel carrier. I emerged from my period of introspection an hour or so
later onto Shad Creek Road refreshed and ready to tackle life once again. You might even say I was once again "well and happy." My sincere thanks to Ms. Kilgallen! In closing and because I don't want anyone out there panicking and tossing their bottled water, DHMO is just another way of defining the chemical formula for H2O... plain old water! Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

By Peter Galvin, MD
Caffeine Effects Recently a study by the National Institute of Health (NIH) was published in which they analyzed the participants' use of coffee, tea, and caffeine and compared that to their risk of developing heart disease and the amount of coronary artery calcium as seen on cardiac CAT scans. The participants were followed for 11 years. Those who regularly drank tea (more than one cup per day) had less progression of coronary artery calcium and less heart disease than those who rarely drank tea (less than 1 cup per day) and
those who never drank tea. Those who regularly or rarely drank coffee did not show any difference in the rates of coronary artery calcium and heart disease as compared to the study’s control subjects (non-coffee and tea drinkers). Likewise caffeine intake also had no effect. Not surprisingly they also found that those who regularly drank coffee and smoked, had higher rates of coronary artery calcium and heart disease. So why would drinking tea, but not coffee have a beneficial effect on heart disease?
Both products are derived from plants so why would there be a difference? The authors concluded the answer was that tea contains naturally occurring compounds called polyphenols and specifically a sub-type of polyphenols called flavonoids. Coffee does not contain flavonoids. Flavonoids are found in many plants and plant products like parsley, onions, blueberries and other berries, black/ green/oolong tea, bananas, citrus fruits, red wine, dark chocolate (flavonoids are removed from most chocolate because they create a bitter taste), peanuts, and thyme to name a few. If this list of plants sounds familiar, it is because plants are the basis of a healthy type of diet that is suspected to reduce the risk of heart disease. That diet is called the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet first became popular in the 1940s and 50s. It is based on the foods commonly consumed in Greece, southern Italy, and Spain. It is a plant-based diet
Page 33 and one of the main ingredients is olive oil. Also included in the diet are legumes (i.e. peanuts, peas, beans, and lentils), fruits, vegetables, unrefined cereals, fish, cheese, yogurt, and wine. Meats are avoided, as are fats, refined grains (i.e. white bread, white rice), and sugars. The Mediterranean diet is not a fad diet. Although one may lose weight on this diet, it is not a weight-loss diet per se, but rather a healthy way of living. It contains the food products on the food pyramid that are recommended by nutritionists. It is a high-fiber, low fat and low sugar diet and is high in flavonoids. To get back to the NIH study, more studies are planned to assess whether the protective association with tea consumption can be harnessed. Perhaps my mother, who used to buy loose tea and brew her own tea, was on to something all those years ago. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Travel (and maybe Ferry) Tip From Marilyn STOPPING MOTION SICKNESS By Marilyn Harvey
For anybody hanging over the railing of a boat, taking deep breaths and praying for dry land, nausea relief can’t come soon enough or strongly enough. As an airplane banks left or right during its flight, passengers can suddenly feel their stomach lurch as the sideways motion makes them wish they’d stayed on the ground. Nausea and queasiness can affect the most cast-ironed stomached amongst us, and can ruin an afternoon outing or a special event. Morning sickness during a pregnancy, nausea from bouncing around on a boat, or car sickness from a journey on twisty roads can make the desire to stop a jumping stomach a strong one, but quick relief is not always easy to find. Usually, a nap and flat ginger ale is the remedy of choice. Many families have stories – now told with amusement, but not funny at the time – of outings and get-togethers that were ru-
ined, or at least changed, due to somebody suffering motion sickness of some kind and the scramble to find alternative clothing for that person. To get your feet back on the ground and end the motion-sickness-mambo, relief now comes in the form of Reliefband. This wearable technology (using pre-installed, replaceable batteries) is light years away from Dramamine, the traditional preventative for motion sickness, and anti-nausea wristbands whose effectiveness is based on acupressure points. Worn on the underside of either wrist, Reliefband looks like a wristwatch. Gentle electrical pulses are emitted, using the body’s natural neural pathways to interrupt the nausea-causing signals between the brain and the stomach. With these brain-to-stomach signals disrupted, gastric rhythms are calmed and restored and nausea/queasiness is averted.
The relief is effective, immediate and drug-free. There are no side-effects from wearing a Reliefband, no medications are involved, and the intensity of the signals can be controlled by the wearer. In fact, the only limitation in using a Reliefband will be by those wearing pace-makers, who should use the Reliefband only on the wrist and not place it anywhere near their chest or their pacemaker where it could interrupt the pacemaker’s signals. Reliefband wearers can enjoy the events and activities they’re participating in by actually being awake for what’s taking place – a major advance over Dramamine where sleepiness is a known side effect. Virtual reality gamers find the Reliefband especially useful in handling the discrepancy between what you actually see or feel, what you think you’re seeing/ feeling, and the “sensory conflict” when seeing vs feeling results in the gut reaction of vomiting.
Reliefbands are clinically proven, and FDA approved. Their usefulness has expanded beyond those fearful flyers who need to feel better as they begin an airline journey, and those boarding a boat for a long ocean-going cruise or the sightseeing boat around Manhattan. Those participating in active sports, enjoying amusement park rides, undergoing chemotherapy, and others for whom nausea is not even an option have also found Reliefbands providing the settled stomach and calmness they seek. Preventing the nausea from even starting is a better game plan than having to deal with it once you have it, and Reliefband is cutting-edge technology that solves a very old problem. Seabands are also a good option and less expensive. You can pick them up at most of the local drug stores. Smooth sailing! (Marilyn A. Harvey is the owner of Breezy Tour & Travel. Far Rock HS Class of 1967 Dances the Night Away at 50th Reunion
By Kami-Leigh Agard
The Far Rockaway High School Class of 1967’s 50th reunion Steering Committee pulled off the feat of the century, well half a century. With just 14 months of planning, the Committee consisting of alumni, Sherry Foster Taxman, Suzie Muchnick, Gary Prisand, Sandra Westcott and Dyan Zeller Harris tirelessly searched across the country for their high school mates to get together and celebrate their class’ 50th reunion. More than 120 alumni attended
with guests spanning from 18 different states. On Saturday, June 24, the reunion bash was held at The Sands in Lido Beach, the very same venue where they celebrated their high school prom 50 years ago! According to Prisand, the Committee worked nonstop to locate as many alumni as they possibly could to commemorate their class reunion. “In April of 2016, our good friend, ‘Big’ Stevie Goldberg hosted an informal party, where the idea first came up for the reunion. We loved the idea and everyone immediately jumped in. Many of us now live in different states, and we would constantly voice call or FaceTime each other with news of folks we were able to reach. Unfortunately, as we searched, we learned that many of our classmates had passed away. However, we all worked our butts off to make this reunion happen, and the kisses and screaming that happened when folks saw each other is a memory that could never be

Give And You Shall Receive Speaking words of gratitude will bring you happiness and your world will become a bit brighter. You will begin to see things in a different way and your burden will lighten. We are here in gratitude for the blessing of life. Looking around we see love in all things. Sometimes we need to be reminded of all the good things we have in this world. Start by greeting each day with a breath of fresh awareness. When you awaken, find the time to say a simple thank you for this day. Think of your blessings in life. Begin by caring deeply and let that carry you through your day. There may be mistakes and misunderstandings but we will grow from our experiences. Prioritize your health, the health of others and our Mother Earth. Share your ideas and learnings with one another. Begin to remove the obstacles that darken or cloud your vision for a better world. Go outside for a walk, even if only for five minutes, it will brighten and refresh your day. The ocean air is natural medicine for the body and soul. Find strength and integrity to endure from deep inside the well within your inner landscape. Show up at the community meetings to serve the greater good of all, not just your own personal agenda. Lend a helping hand to someone in need. Be grateful to be able to help someone less fortunate than yourself. The more you give, the more you will receive. Remember to breathe throughout the day. Remind yourself that you can choose
peace, no matter what is going on around you. Whenever you desire, you can retreat to that quiet place within simply by closing your eyes. Listen, feel and be part of it all. Trust your heart, it will never mislead you. Open to your inner guidance of your spirit and breathe into all that it offers you, allowing you to follow your path with grace and eloquence. Practice love and kindness with no expectation but to be in that space. Be Love. Be Happy. Be Trusting. Be Good to yourself and one another.
WE ALL LOVE MARY AMBERY CONCERT
Wild Geese By Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

ROCKAWAY LITTLE LEAGUE FIVE CHAMPIONS CROWNED TO END RLL 2017 SEASON
Last Thursday, the Neponsit Realty Giants topped the Drive Safe Rockies 4-1 to claim the Major Boys championship while the Slices and Ices Orioles beat the Empire Unlimited A’s, also by a score of 4-1, to clinch the championship of the Minor Boys Division. A day earlier, the Pico Mariners claimed the Pee Wee Senior crown and the Bar-
toli Chiropractic Red Storm locked down the Minor Girls title. The Storm was the only top seed to run the table in the highly competitive Rockaway Little League playoffs. These four victors entered the winner’s circle, joining the Graybeards Hilltoppers who sewed up the Major Girls division title on June 20. This action brought the 2017 season to a close. And
what a great season it was! RLL is already looking forward to a successful 2018. A survey will go out to all parents, soliciting feedback and
ideas for improvement. Registration for the 2018 is open online at http://rockawaylittleleagueny.com. Have a great summer.

Jamaica Bay Softball League – Week 5 Preview By The Commissioner
We hope everyone had a great July 4th. There were no games scheduled for Sunday due to the holiday. The Chuggernauts and No-Shows did play though, making up their matchup that got postponed from Week 1. The No-Shows brought the gloves and kept the Chuggers bats quiet as they won by scores of 6-1 and 5-2. No-Shows are now in the mix of the playoff hunt as the Chuggers hopes are pretty much dead. This is what we have coming up this weekend. On Sunday, July 9: 9:30 a.m. Field 1, Kings vs Chuggernauts - Chuggernauts lost their make-up games and now are at the bottom of the West. New captain Mike Brew said the rest of the year they’ll just have fun and look to make the team better next year. Kings are only one game out of first and looking to stay there with a big matchup coming in a few weeks. PREDICTION: Kings Sweep. 9:30 a.m. Field 2, Mudsharks vs No-Shows
- After making up their games from Week 1, the No-Shows are only one game behind the Mudsharks for that final playoff spot. The injury train hit the Sharks last week and they have four losses for the first time in who knows how long. This matchup will probably determine that final playoff spot in the West. PREDICTION: Split. 9:30 a.m. Field 3, Orioles vs Misfits - The streak ended and started right back up. Orioles are on a two-game losing streak as the Misfits are sitting pretty in 2nd place in the East Division. The O’s are pretty much done if they get swept this week but they don't care, they just can’t wait for next weekend. Under new management and new jerseys, the Misfits are rolling. PREDICTION: Misfits Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 1, Morning Wood vs Member Berries - The Member Berries started their inaugural season with two wins but haven't won since. Morning Wood are back in 1st place and looking to stay there and lock up that top spot in the

East. Member Berries are in the tough West Division and will find themselves in the bottom if they can’t find a win. PREDICTION: Morning Wood Sweep. 11:30 a.m. Field 2, The Army vs Moneyballs ***GAME OF THE WEEK*** - Well this matchup was circled since the schedule came out. If it wasn't for the Moneyballs not wanting to add one more person to their team, there probably wouldn't be an Army. Instead a few Moneyballs left and the rest is history. Moneyballs are looking to stay undefeated as The Army is trying to keep pace in a tight East Division. PREDICTION: Split. 11:30 a.m. Field 3, Old Head vs Knights of Columbus - An East Division matchup, with Old Head desperately needing to win to keep their season alive, if they wanna make the playoffs. Knights of Columbus started slow but have won four straight games and are looking to crack the top three spots in the division. Old Head is rumored to have a few surprises show up
to play but not sure if it will help much. PREDICTION: Knights of Columbus Sweep. STANDINGS East 1. Morning Wood 6-2 2. Misfits 4-2 3. The Army 3-2-1 4. Knights of Columbus 4-4 5. Old Head 1-5 6. Orioles 1-7 West 1. Moneyballs 8-0 2. Kings 5-1 3. Mudsharks 4-4 4. No-Shows 3-5 5. Member Berries 2-5-1 6. Chuggernauts 2-6 The league is running a 50/50 raffle for $5 a chance. Proceeds will be donated to the Broad Channel Athletic Club Mardi Gras Fund. See any team or e-mail JBSLCommish@gmail.com for tickets. Winner will be drawn at our All-Star Game on August 5.
