Local Officer Saves Choking Child By Katie McFadden
A baby is alive thanks to the quick actions of an NYPD officer. On Sunday, June 26, Officer Brian Zeng, working for the 100th Precinct’s Summer Detail, was assigned to the beach and boardwalk around Beach 96th Street. At around 3:15 p.m. on the warm, sunny day, he and his partner were approached by a group of frantic people. “A mother said her eight-month-old baby was choking on a piece of fruit. The baby was already turning blue, so I turned him around and performed some back blows,” Officer Zeng told The Rockaway Times. On the job for five years, Zeng has never been involved in such an incident before, but he quickly thought back to the CPR training he received while
in the Police Academy. “I turned him over to check his airway and saw that he was still choking, so I turned him back over and performed one more set of back blows. I visibly saw the baby spit up and I checked his airway again to confirm it was clear. The baby started crying and I returned the baby back to his mother,” Zeng said. A few days later, the 100th Precinct shared the story on social media, which received a big response. “PO Zeng, your actions saved this baby's life. Thank you!!” the post read. Asked about how it felt to save the child, Zeng told the RT, “It felt good. I’m glad I was able to use my training to help save a life, which is why I took this job— to help others.”

MAYOR ANNOUNCES HIGHER LIFEGUARD PAY TO ADDRESS SHORTAGE New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Wednesday that the city has reached a deal with the lifeguard union represented by District Council 37 to raise starting wages for lifeguards to $19.46 per hour this summer and develop a training program to fully staff the city’s 17 mini pools. “We negotiated for creation of a class of lifeguards who are restricted to mini pools and with this influx of mini pool guards we will be able to very quickly open all of our mini pools, an essential cooling center for young New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said. “We are also elevating, for this summer alone, lifeguard pay to $19.46 per hour, and to ensure our beaches and pools are guarded all summer long, we will pay a retention bonus in September to guards who work every week through the end
of the summer season. “Finally, we are collaborating across city agencies on a public safety presence to keep swimmers off closed sections of beach, and working with New York City Emergency Management, the New York City Fire Department, and the New York City Police Department to deploy complementary measures to keep New Yorkers safe. “While these changes are a step in the right direction, our ability to safely open beaches and pools has been impacted by a national lifeguard shortage, and has also been held back by inefficient practices that are in dire need of further reform. We will continue to work closely to correct course on policies that don’t serve New Yorkers and pool resources from all agencies to ensure a fun and safe summer.”
BEACH 94 – 106 NOW OPEN FOR SWIMMING After two drownings on the beach last month, just ahead of the July 4th holiday weekend, NYC Parks and the United States Army Corps of Engineers announced that construction was completed between Beach 94th -106th Street, and those beaches could be open to swimming starting July 1. The announcement opened up twelve more beaches in a busy area to safe water access. The U.S. Army Corps’ resiliency work is continuing at Beach 109-117, and will move to Beach 117-121 and Beach 136-140 through September, as previously announced. Due to the ongoing lifeguard shortage, operations will be adjusted daily based on lifeguard headcounts. Safety remains a top priority and beaches will only open to swimming where we have adequate lifeguard coverage to keep swimmers safe. Beachgoers looking for updated project information and ongoing service changes can visit: www.nycgovparks.org/facility/
beaches/beach-recovery/rockaway-beach-closures “We have remained committed to reopening as much of the beach as quickly as possible, and we are thrilled to be able to open up 12 additional blocks of beach available for full use –earlier than expected,” said Parks Commissioner Donoghue said. “The Army Corps is doing tremendous work for the peninsula, and we commend them for their expedient work and great partnership on the project. As always, we urge all New Yorkers; only swim in designated areas during lifeguard hours.” "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, is pleased to have been able to complete this vital portion of our coastal storm risk reduction project ahead of schedule, which is a substantial benefit to all stakeholders and reaffirms USACE's commitment to getting the job done while continuing to make safety our top priority," COL Matthew Luzzatto, commander, New York District said.

Thrilla in Camilla to Boost Tunnel to Towers
By Katie McFadden
Friday is fight night! But it’s all for a good cause. Thrilla in Camilla is back and this time, FDNY Boxing is taking to the
ring to support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. On Friday, July 8, St. Camillus’ lot is the place to be. In its sixth installation, FDNY Boxing will take on the West Yorkshire Firefighters Boxing Team at this year’s Thrilla in Camilla. For the first time, the charity of choice is the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. In the past, Thrilla in Camilla has helped support Building Homes for Heroes, an organization that builds mortgage-free, handicap accessible homes for veterans returning home with serious injuries, but with most of those being for soldiers returning from Iraq and Af-

ghanistan, where both wars have ended, Bobby McGuire, who organizes Thrilla in Camilla each year, wanted to support a charity that does that same great work but also supports FDNY families. In honor of Stephen Siller, a firefighter who died on 9/11, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation also serves to build mortgage-free homes for catastrophically injured veterans, but also first responders and Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children. As firefighters continue to die from 9/11 related illnesses 21 years later, that mission of helping those firefighters’ families continues. “Besides helping veterans, Tunnel to Towers also helps police and firefighters so it was a better fit for our team. They also started a great program for homeless veterans which is important, and the program for first responders from 9/11, who are still being affected. We’re still losing guys
at an alarming rate. There was a week in June where we lost four guys alone. We felt this charity was a better fit and these guys are really organized and have really Continued on page 7

THRILLA IN CAMILLA TO BOOST TUNNEL TO TOWERS Continued from Page 6 been a big help so far,” McGuire said. Giving back to charity is all a part of FDNY Boxing’s motto—"We will fight anyone, anywhere at any time as long as it’s for a good cause.” Tunnel to Towers Chairman and CEO Frank Siller will be on hand on Friday to accept a check from the event. McGuire hopes to give at least $30,000, which will come from proceeds for the event and the help of many sponsors. Tunnel to Towers will also have a barbecue stand, serving up burgers, hot dogs, chicken cutlet sandwiches and sausage and peppers, all for $5. Plus there will be water, soda, wine and beer for purchase to wash it all down. The night will also include a 50/50, with winners announced after the eighth bout, which will help send the FDNY Boxing Team to the 2022 World Police Fire Games being held later this month.
Besides the good cause, Thrilla in Camilla features some good fights. The night will feature 11 bouts, including middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight matches between FDNY Boxing and the West Yorkshire Firefighters Boxing Team, who will be fighting in New York for the first time. And of course, there will be some extra special matchups like the Xavier vs. Xaverian
Catholic High School Championship bout, and the grudge match. For the Catholic school match, Xavier’s Anthony Diangelo and Xaverian’s Jeremiah Ryan will go head-to-head. And the grudge match is an FDNY vs. EMS matchup between Matt Blewitt of FDNY’s Engine 48 and Julian Gonzalez of EMS Station 17. McGuire says Thrilla in Camilla wouldn’t be possible without
the help of the Rockaway community. “Rockaway really steps it up and supports this event with sponsorships,” he said. Some of the biggest sponsors this year include The Wharf, Manhattan Beer Company, Boening Brothers, SPBMCC, Bud Light, Labatt Blue and R&H Beer. Some other local sponsors include Bungalow Bar, Harbor Light, the Graybeards, the Rockaway Hotel, Healy’s, WISH, Sands Point Physical Therapy, Cross Country Savings, Currans, Kennedy’s, Rogers, Jamesons, Pico, Bagel Barista, the Bayhouse, Atlantic Service, the Belle Harbor Yacht Club, Breezy Wine & Liquors, Profile Builders and Rockaway’s local firehouses. It all goes down Friday, July 8 at St. Camillus (Beach 99th and Shore Front). The bouts start at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Whit’s End on Beach 97th will host the after party, right after the fights are over. In the event of bad weather, Thrilla in Camilla will be held on Sunday, July 10 at 4 p.m. For tickets, head to www. FDNYBoxing.com

***** It’s hard to keep track of all the annual things we have around here. This Friday, July 8 at 6 p.m. is Thrilla in Camilla! It’s a great night of FDNY boxing for a good cause at St. Camillus (99-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard). This year proceeds benefit Tunnel to Towers. For tickets, see www. fdnyboxing.com. Also in the St. Camillus lot, next Sunday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Assemblywoman Stacey Amato and Senator Joe Addabbo host an annual Rockaway Paper Shredding Day. The electeds invite everyone to safely and securely shred their unwanted documents. ***** Speaking of annual things. Here’s our annual plea to Parks: Please put more garbage recep-
THURSDAY, July 7, 2022 tacles on the beach and please have more frequent pick-ups. Parks must do more because too many people are disgusting slobs. It’s truly disheartening that some people leave garbage on the beach and think nothing of it. It’s a waste of time for us to remind these knuckleheads but we will do so anyway: If cans are full, take your garbage with you when you leave. ***** Remember when The Army Corps said they should be finished part of their work by mid-July (the beaches from 92106)? Lots of people groaned and hollered. Well, the Army Corps finished early so the beaches can open (assuming there are lifeguards). The Army Corps has made timeline announcements in the past and have often completed jobs on the early side. Sounds like it’s part of their overall strategy. Get everyone prepared for the worst and then look good In the end. ***** Something’s gotta give. This past Saturday, drivers, pedestri-

ans and boardwalk patrons were terrified when a big gang of guys on dirt bikes and ATVS went gallivanting through the streets, across medians, and speeding through the crowds on the boardwalk. To many people’s surprise, police did seemingly little to stop it. This has become a big problem through the city but was a first for the boardwalk. ***** Last fall, we did a story about the dilapidating state of Riis Park. Among the things we noted, was the crumbling concrete boardwalk. In a classic National Park Service way of doing things, with the boardwalk (at Bay 3 or so) crumbling worse than ever, NPS did not fix it but simply put a fence around it. They charge twenty bucks to park, they never fix anything, they just don’t want people in the National Recreation Area. ***** Vandals did a job tagging/putting graffiti on the boardwalk in the Beach 50s. We spotted this when it first happened but resist putting photos of it online or in the
The Rockaway Times paper. Some vandals love the publicity, and we’d rather not oblige. ***** We expect a lot of pressure will be put on City Hall regarding the ferry and the subsidies it requires after a report by the City Comptroller comes out. The argument that is rarely heard is, what are the costs associated with people taking cars instead (traffic, pollution, accidents, etc.) ***** The folks of sketchRockaway! are celebrating their one-year anniversary. The group organizes sketch days, inviting artists to different locations around the peninsula to be inspired as they draw. In honor of the occasion, Norma Allende and Chris Jorge put some of the sketch artists’ work on display in the windows of the old Fashion Wave at 216 Beach 116th Street. If you have a chance, check it out, there’s some great stuff. ***** Get the full Rockaway Times by email each week. Just send us an email at Mail@Rockawaytimes. com and we’ll sign you up.

Respect Campaign Is Back The Respect campaign, a partnership between Surfrider Foundation NYC and the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Park Conservancy (JBRPC), has the core mission of protecting New York City’s beloved beaches, shorelines and natural areas in Jamaica Bay and Rockaway. The collaboration strives to keep shorelines clean and healthy, promote water safety and raise awareness of the rippling impact that everyone has on the amazingly diverse coastal ecosystems and vibrant communities of Rockaway and Jamaica Bay. Returning for its fourth year, the campaign plays a vital role in elevating priority issues related to keeping NYC’s most popular coastal environments healthy and keeping people safe. Rockaway and Jamaica Bay parks and shores see millions of visitors each summer, creating substantial challenges when it comes to managing the levels of trash and debris, limiting the effects of human activities on local flora and fauna and avoiding water related
incidents that sadly cost lives each year. Through raising awareness of these critical issues, Surfrider NYC and the JBRPC hope to engage local communities and all New Yorkers and create a positive impact on Jamaica Bay and Rockaway that encourages responsible recreational use of these critical public spaces. That’s why the campaign includes informative messages like “Keep

A Mission to Save the Anabas Boat Club By Katie McFadden
Since 1901, the Anabas Boat Club has been a staple in Broad Channel and its maritime history. Photos and plaques on the old nautical walls of the 121-year-old building show the club in action, with past generations gathered on its wrap-around decks, announcements of fishing tournaments and the annual blessing of the fleet. But those memories are in danger of becoming purely things of the past. Down to just 10 members and in desperate need of some renovation, the Club was recently advertised for sale, something that is now on pause due to a lawsuit. But some of its remaining members are trying to preserve the Club and its rich history to sail it into a bright future. The Anabas Boat Club has survived a lot in its time. After being established in 1901 on the land where the A Train trestle now runs, just a few years later, the Anabas found itself in a new location. The history is unclear, but some say it had to be moved because of a fire, while others claim it was lost in a gambling card game. Either way, around 1907, the entire building was floated across the channel and placed at its current location at 1820 Channel Road. Much of the club’s history is set in lore, and stories passed on among members. One rumor says actress Mae West would frequently perform there and may have even named the place. A photo near the entrance to the Club explains the Anabas is a fish that can climb trees and survive. “It’s a fish out of water, so it fit,” one Club member with generational ties, John D. said. Other rumors are that the Anabas played a big role during Prohibition. Trap doors in the ceilings were allegedly used to sneak booze upstairs. A staircase leading to the upstairs rooms ties into that story, only being wide enough for one person to climb slowly. “They said it’s because cops would have to run upstairs single file,” mem-
ber Peter Heinz said. Some things are more evident. The Anabas Boat Club is a prime hangout spot on the bay for those who pay the yearly dues to be a member. It has a kitchen, a bar, a party/lounge space and a big back deck offering prime views of Jamaica bay and passing A trains. Shorebirds land on the deck's pilings where members can take a ramp down to a dock where they can launch their own vessels or one of the club's. There are even a dozen or so rooms upstairs, big enough to fit a small bed if a member wants to spend a few nights or use it to store belongings. It has all utilities including plumbing and electric, which are mostly turned on during the warmer months, when the club is in full use. And it bears a portrait of President William McKinley on the wall, which many say is because he was shot the same year the club was founded. About four years ago, a friend persuaded Peter Heinz to finally join. “My friend Vinny McGuire’s pitch was ‘join this club, it needs work,’” Heinz said. That wasn’t a big selling point until Heinz found personal use for it. With 50 years of boating experience, in 2018, Heinz decided to share that with others and launched Rockaway Sailing, offering cruises around Jamaica Bay. And he needed a place to dock his 24-foot J-24 sailboat. “I joined the club. The price was right. And it’s grown on me. This place rocks, though it might be in slightly worse shape than it was four years ago,” Heinz said. So this winter, when the mem-

bers saw a real estate ad for the club, they felt blindsided. “The commodore put the club up for sale in December and one month later, all the members received a group text saying it was for sale because membership was down too low to pay the bills,” Heinz said. But there was a problem. As a 501(c)(7) nonprofit Social Organization operating under a deed bearing the Anabas Boat Club’s own name, Heinz and others felt the commodore had no right to sell the building. So they fought back. The members hired an attorney and filed an injunction against the sale. It’s now on pause. According to Heinz, the commodore was recently subpoenaed, and it’s a case he and the other members are confident they’ll win. That’s why Heinz and other members are now determined to bring new life back to the Anabas. They’re on a mission to ramp up membership and draw in folks who will see the value in preserving the club, to help put the work in to fix it up and make it a place of pride again. As the Club’s bylaws say it can only have 40 members, Heinz believes it was a place that used to have a waiting list to join. He’d like to see it return to that state. And that doesn’t necessarily mean only recruiting members who own boats. “We’d like to get a lot of members who love the water, who love the outdoors, who want to use kayaks, who want to go sailing, people who will appreciate it who are willing to put in elbow grease into this place, carpentry, paint-
ing, people who can feel ownership in the club and bring it back to a place that looks great so it serves as a source of pride,” Heinz said. “We want to save the Anabas.” After years of neglect and damage from Hurricane Sandy, the Club can use some big renovations. Heinz hopes that by increasing membership, the yearly dues and people with a deep interest in preserving the club, will help bring it back to its prime potential. For only $500 a year, people can become a member. And Heinz and other members are ready to provide perks. Besides having access to the club and all its amenities, Heinz will offer members free sailing excursions around Jamaica Bay. The club also has a few kayaks and paddle boards for members to use. Those with their own boats are welcome to store their vessels on the property in the off-season for a small extra fee. The members are also in the process of coming up with other ways to help boost the club financially to carry out renovations and give the club the ability to offer more by purchasing more kayaks, paddle boards and small sailboats. Membership will play a big role in that, but Heinz and potential new members recently held a meeting to discuss alternative fundraising efforts. Heinz has also secured VFW Post #260 for a fundraiser on August 13, that will feature a DJ, food, drinks and a 50/50. Heinz also recently launched a GoFundMe to help cover the fees in the legal fight to preserve the club. To make a donation, head to: www. gofundme.com/f/help-us-preserve-the-anabas-boat-club With a little love, money and membership, the Anabas has potential to be something great again. “It needs a lot of work, but we can do it,” Heinz said. Moon Lot Brings Thai Tastes to Rockaway
By Katie McFadden
In Thailand, Full Moon Parties have become all the rage. On the night of the full moon, people all around gather on the beach to party, dance and drink, to a backdrop of neon lights and bright colors for a night of fun. It’s become so popular that it now occurs at almost any moon phase. Fon Tongsomboon, her husband Bank Bunnag and their best friend Kwan Srimachai, all originally from Thailand, wanted to capture a more low-key version of that and bring a taste of home to their new outdoor space, Moon Lot on Beach 96th Street. Last Saturday, July 2, Moon Lot, located at 189 Beach 96th Street, opened its gates for a soft opening. Friends and neighbors gathered all weekend to see what the new place in town is all about. The outdoor lounge space serves up Thai street food from a cart, like last week’s meat skewers and pad Thai noodles, with options that will rotate so people can always find something new to try. They also have a bar stocked with domestic and imported beer like Singha from Thailand, wine, and lychee and yuzu-flavored Luna Hard Seltzers, which were a big hit last weekend, plus non-alcoholic drinks like Thai iced tea, bubble tea, and more. “We have options for everybody,” Tongsomboon said. Plus a good vibe all around. Moving to Rockaway two years ago after spending many years coming down for the surf, Tongsomboon, a real estate agent for RE/MAX, and Bunnag wanted

to integrate into their new community but bring something that was missing. “There aren’t a lot of options for Asian or Thai food. There’s one Thai restaurant but we wanted to offer something more authentic—Thai street food, not the usual stuff. If you go through a Thai street, you’ll find all these vendors offering different small bites. One might have fishball skewers and the next place will have noodles or something else. We always pick a little here and there. I was missing that Thai barbecue skewers were the big hit last weekend. authentic taste of home that I crave,”
Tongsomboon said. So when they acquired the space on Beach 96th, they decided to share that taste of home with others in a laid back, open location. Moon Lot is meant to serve as a place that serves the community. “We want to integrate with the community. We had such overwhelming support this weekend, from neighbors and local businesses—Bernadettes, The Cradle, Cuisine by Claudette, Sovereign Surf, La Cevicheria and Mara’s Ice Cream Parlor. They all stopped by to show love and support. I’m so grateful and appreciative and it’s a good vibe all around. It’s not a competition, it’s all about elevating the whole of Rockaway,” she said. For that reason, Tongsomboon wants to make Moon Lot a com-
Page 13
munity-oriented space. “We want to give back. If people have ideas, our place is fluid and open. We would like to reach out to local artists, vendors, service providers, rescue groups etc.,who might benefit from renting out an 8’x20’ space in one of our trailers to use as a workspace, studio space, showroom, art show, retail store etc. We are open for ideas for the right fit so we can complement each other,” she said. They’ll even be hosting the annual Jello Wrestling event in August. The name—Moon Lot—was inspired by the lot-like space, Thailand’s Full Moon parties and simply, being able to see the moon from the open area. “When we were first starting, we would say meet me at the lot. Then we were thinking how Thailand is famous for its Full Moon party with this colorful, fun, good vibe and every time we work late here, we can see the moon at night, so we wanted a name that incorporated the moon and gives it this whimsical feel,” Tongsomboon said. After its soft opening, Moon Lot closed for a few days to give the partners some time to regroup and take feedback into consideration. They’re still working on a schedule, but they hope to be open every day, depending on the weather, and may start opening early to offer breakfast and coffee before folks head out for their beach day. They hope to keep the space open for as long as possible, so expect some fall activities at Moon Lot. “We want to incorporate vendors and maybe offer weekly fall markets along with food carts so we can stay in operation even when it starts to get colder,” she said. So far, they appreciate all the love and support they’ve seen in their opening days. “I love this community. I feel the support, I feel the love and I feel more than blessed to be working in the community where I live,” Tongsomboon said. For full updates on happenings and food offerings, make sure to follow @themoonlot on Instagram.

‘Kiss Me, Kate’ Hits RTC The Stage By Dan Guarino
On Friday night, July 15, the curtain goes up on the Rockaway Theatre Company’s sprawling musical production of “Kiss Me, Kate.” From a few sparse notes, the opening number “Another Openin’, Another Show,” soon unfolds into a riot of activity as actors, singers and dancers, portraying dancers, singers and actors, fill the stage and give a rollicking preview of what “Kate” has in store. In a classic show within a show, with a comical, musical twist of a Shakespeare production to put on and many characters with intertwined relationships, what could go wrong? As director John Gilleece explains, “’Kiss Me, Kate’" takes place in Ford's Theater in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948. It is about a theater company performing a musical version of Shakespeare's ‘Taming of the Shrew.’ In the play, the audience will see its fictional cast ‘backstage’ and ‘onstage’ performing scenes from this new musical. Many of their lives resemble the lives of Shakespeare's characters.” Both cast and crew have been working nearly non-stop leading up to opening night. Gilleece notes, “We have been working on this show for more than three months with a cast of 25 and a production crew of 10,” and a live stage band playing out its 19 memorable musical numbers. Besides the opening, the show’s music runs the gamut from the waltzy “Wunderbar” to the steamy “So In Love,” near-operatic “Cantiamo” and the verbal slapstick of “Kiss Me, Kate.” Energetically color-
ful and precision-choreographed dance numbers abound. “There are many highlights in this production,” Gilleece says, “All of which underscore the astounding talent of our performers and choreographers. Of course, there are several huge production numbers like "Another Openin', Another Show" and the justly famous "Too Darn Hot." But there are tuneful songs and sprightly dances sprinkled all throughout.” The show runs for a total of nine performances from July 15 through July 31, with showtimes on Fridays/ Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. For Gilleece, what makes "Kate" special “is the combination of Cole Porter's musical and lyrical genius, the clever and funny (script) by Bella and Sam Spewack and the story and language provided by William Shakespeare. It’s an iconic example of Broadway blending with classic Shakespearean themes.” As RTC’s Artistic Director and one of its founders, for Gilleece this marks an unexpected return to di-
recting. “I have been directing our plays for almost 25 years. About two-and-half years ago…I thought I had retired from directing RTC productions. But our Producer, Susan Jasper, kept urging me to direct one more play—'Kiss Me, Kate.’ I finally yielded and agreed to do it." It was not without its challenges though. “Kate” is the second of four productions originally stopped by the pandemic in 2020 and now slat-
ed for the 2022 season. Indeed, several cast members have wrestled with Covid. “Because of that fear, it does not feel like a normal season,” Gillece said. However though wary, all are vaccinated, rehearsing with masks and mindful of health concerns. For many it is happily their first time back on stage in a long time. “The cast is excited to be presenting such a huge Broadway classic,” Gilleece says. “Personally, I can't wait for the audience to hear and see our glorious singers and energetic dancers,” he notes. “Be sure to select your favorite ones and tell them that after the show. It will mean a lot to them!” But, he adds, “Audience members, be warned. You will be singing Cole Porter songs all night after you leave the theater!” “Kiss Me, Kate” will be presented at the RTC’s Post Theatre at Fort Tilden. Dear Editor: Any chance you can suggest to the Parks Dept to maybe alternate the hours some lifeguards work? It makes sense to have some remain on the beach until at least 8 o’clock, especially on days like yesterday when the beaches are still really crowded at 6 o’clock when the lifeguards go home.
Dear Editor: I would like to Thank our local NYC Parks Dept team for preparing the beach for EVERYONE! Joe, Langley, Tyrone and their entire 'beach' team have done an incredible job preparing our beach for another wonderful season. Thank you so so much!! ME Olsen

Meet District 27’s New School Superintendent By Katie McFadden
Just as the school year came to a close, on June 27, Department of Education Chancellor David Banks announced the city’s new and returning school district superintendents. Among them was District 27’s newly appointed Superintendent David Norment. Since starting July 1, with more with 19 years of experience in the DOE, Norment has already hit the ground running, making connections with District 27’s schools, including those in and around the Rockaway peninsula. On Tuesday, July 5, Norment was at Rockaway’s P.S. 105 The Bay School on Beach 51st Street, a stop on his learning and listening tour of District 27’s schools offering the Summer Rising program, when he took some time to speak with The Rockaway Times. He had already stopped at P.S. 114, P.S. 317 and P.S. 183. Engaging in the listening tour is something all superintendents are encouraged to do this summer to hear from staff and students on how to improve their individual schools, but it’s something Norment says he’s done throughout his career. Following in the footsteps of his parents, his mother, an elementary school teacher for 33 years and his father, a professor at Morehouse College, a private historically black men's liberal arts college in Atlanta, Georgia, Norment, a Bronx resident, had teaching in his blood. When his family was living in Long Island, he started out as a social studies teacher in Hempstead for seven years. And he worked his way up from there. With interest in becoming an assistant principal, Norment applied everywhere. He first entered the NYCDOE when he became assistant principal of District 28’s M.S. 217 in Queens, overseeing 1,600 students. From there, he became principal of P.S. 140 in District 28, where he worked for more than eight years. In 2019, Norment transitioned to Deputy Superintendent of neighboring District 27, and late last month, Norment was officially named District 27’s Superintendent, over-
seeing 50 principals and 55 sites, including Rockaway’s schools. Among his accomplishments, Norment can name several, but a few stick out, especially some of the things he did as principal of P.S. 140, which was notoriously a struggling school. “When I took over, the school was performing at 7% in Levels 3 and 4 ELA and 8% in math Levels 3 and 4. When I left, they had increased by over 45-47% in ELA and 40% in math,” Norment said. He was also able to obtain a $2.5 Million Magnet grant for the school. “That was a game changer because it allowed us to really strengthen the resources, the technology at the school. When I entered, the school didn’t even have Fios, so it would take hours for the kids to get online. I leveraged funds to increase the bandwidth for the school,” he said. Additionally, working with elected officials, Norment was able to bring a brand-new schoolyard to the school, giving it a campus feel. He also created a big blue banner that hung from the outside of the school reading, “You Are Beautiful,” to give the kids and surrounding community a boost. “I believe in positive affirmation, and I wanted my students to feel proud about their school and respect their school, so the community would respect it in return. I believe in connections. I would hold meetings outside of the school. I would hold them in the community center of the Baisley Houses and go to the parents because we wanted to make sure that we’re

supporting our kids, our parents, our leaders and teacher parent coordinators, to work together to make sure kids thrive. That’s part of my responsibility, to be seen, so you can engage with me to shape what the focus will be in this district,” Norment said. That’s why to him, the listening tours around the District 27 schools this summer are so important, and they're something he says he’ll continue. “It’s never gonna stop for me. This is who I am as a leader, so I will always be listening. As long as I’m superintendent, I will be listening to all the constituents that make up District 27,” he said. “The more you listen, the more you engage in conversations. I think somewhere in that, trust is built and once communities, principals, teachers, everyone involved in the future of young people know that you’re looking out for the best interests of their children, they’ll work with you.” In addition to making connections with the faculty, Norment has plans to work with the District 27 community at large. “Being the superintendent, how do I support families and communities while supporting the students? Students are in a vacuum and exist within a family structure, a community structure, so part of the learning and listening tour is reaching out to those community representatives, those elected officials, religious leaders, business leaders, community representatives that service District 27 so I can have a conversation with them, in addition to meeting with principals, assistant principals, parents and students,” Norment said. “Students are very clear with what they’d like to learn and oftentimes their voices are ignored because they are the clients, so we have to start listening to students as well. I’ve really learned a lot about a school simply by talking to the students.” Norment has a 100-day plan for his early days as superintendent. “My 100-day plan will lay out the key areas where we’re going to address the academic, social and emotional safety of District 27
schools. We have some amazing leaders, amazing teachers in District 27 and I think utilizing that knowledge and skillset, we’d be foolish to not use that. We’re going to utilize those teachers, parents and leaders to help ensure everyone is receiving a quality education,” he said. Norment has some major goals in mind. “I really want to focus on the science of reading and making sure teachers are really clear. One major way is to increase the training to support schools and especially training for Pre-k through second grade. All teachers need it, but we want to have targeted professional learning for those early grade teachers so they can set the foundation for reading,” he said. Coming from a family of educators and as a father of three, Norment says his passion for education comes from “being a role model within my own family. My oldest is in high school and my twins, a boy and a girl, are in middle school. The mentality I had as a principal is, I wanted to create a school where I felt comfortable enough sending my own children, and I think every school leader should think like that. When you think like that, you do the work to create that environment,” Norment said. Taking on the role as superintendent of District 27 is a big task, but Norment is excited for this next chapter. “This is a large district. We have 50 principals, 55 sites and six Pre-K sites. It covers an entire racial, ethnic, economic spectrum, and supporting a district that is so diverse, requires a diverse approach and that is the thing I’m excited about. It’s really challenging ourselves as leaders and making sure every child is given an equal opportunity to realize their own dreams and their own strengths, and working together to get that done. I don’t have all the answers but I’m good at listening, so we can all develop solutions to problems,” Norment said. “I’m really excited for this opportunity to help shape a team that’s going to provide support for our unique schools.”

America By Lou Pastina
I hope everyone had a safe and beautiful 4th of July. It’s been a turbulent time in America these last few years, and I am not one to take sides, but I love our country and have had the opportunity to visit other countries and know without a doubt, despite all our issues, this is the greatest country in the world. Maybe it is because of the way we handle our issues that things
seem so messy and confusing. We allow debate and discourse, and we review things later after decisions have been made and ask again, did we make the right decision? And if not, we look for more discussion and sometimes change things. It seems incredibly messy, and at times, like it isn’t working, but it does, it always does. We have a resilience about us that makes us different. We all come from somewhere else, but when we are here, we are Americans, and sometimes
when we travel, we are not always welcomed, but when there is trouble, we are always sought after for help. I had the opportunity to take a bike ride this past weekend the length of the boardwalk, and it was a beautiful ride. Not just because the weather was spectacular, but because as I rode east to the end of the boardwalk and back, I saw incredibly filled beaches with people of all shapes, sizes, and colors. And they were all doing the same thing, pursuing their right for happiness, and they were free to do so. Individuals, couples, families, men, women, and children running, sitting, laughing, eating, talking, singing, swimming, living life as it was meant to be lived, in freedom. Sometimes we lose sight of how great our country is, sometimes our country does things which don’t seem right, but we get more right than wrong, and our country aspires to be more, to be better, to promote freedom. It’s been 21 years since 9/11 and shortly afterwards there was a tremendous feeling of being American. Time
New to the market! Neponsit Charmer! Must-see for anyone looking for property in Rockaway! Charming 3 bdrm/2 bath classic on 40x100 set back behind a generous front lawn. This property boasts a private driveway, large secluded backyard, spacious master bedroom on the first floor and a wide open unfinished basement. pulls at the edges of those memories, but we must never forget that we are free because of the sacrifices of others. Those people include our parents and ancestors, our military who protects us, our police and firefighters, nurses and doctors and others who put their lives on the line without hesitation to save lives. They are true American heroes. But so are everyday people who take advantage of the rights enshrined in our Constitution, such as the right to pursue happiness. This weekend was a great example of the exercise of that right. It seems simple, and if you don’t look, you won’t see it, but it’s there and it’s important. Many people in many countries don’t ever have that opportunity. So, if you ever feel down about our country or think it’s just one big mess, know that it is working just as designed by our founders, as one big messy democratic process, that is long, tortuous, confusing, and beautiful. Remember, this is our home, our country, and it is the greatest in the world. God bless America!

Food and Beverage Insider BASTILLE DAY IS FOR EVERYONE By Natalie Crooks
Bastille Day is one foreign holiday that Americans haven’t grabbed onto quite like some others. We love to eat tacos and drink margaritas on Cinco de Mayo, eat soda bread and drink green beer on St. Patrick’s Day, and enjoy king cake on Mardi Gras, but this summertime holiday is one of France’s most beloved. Bastille Day celebrates the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789. The Bastille was used as a state prison at the time and the fall of the Bastille was a major event in beginning the French Revolution. Each year, the French people celebrate Bastille Day on July 14th with parades, fireworks, food and dance. It is kind of like the Fourth of July, people have the day off work and nearly every French person is out celebrating.
Bastille Day is a perfect opportunity to head out to your local French restaurant and celebrate. After all, the French did play a major role in America’s own independence from England. You might not find burgers and dogs to be as present at they are on the Fourth, but many traditional French foods are enjoyed for the holiday. Things like quiche, croissants and crêpes may be enjoyed during the day and richer foods like tarte flambée, cheese and steak are popular dinner options. There is no official food of Bastille Day, but the French are certainly
famous for their culinary excellence so grab a baguette and some brie or indulge in a plate of steak frites, who really needs an excuse for that? Of course, like most holidays celebrating independence and the overthrow of a regime, alcohol plays a part in the celebrations. The first thing I think of when I think of France is of course, wine! The French make some of the best wines in the world and July is the perfect time to pop some Champagne or sip on some Provence Rosé. If you’re looking forward to some of the richer dishes, try a Cabernet-forward Bordeaux for a powerful and bold red wine. However, it doesn’t have to be all about the wine, you can try traditional Pastis service if you want to feel like a real Parisian. Pastis is an anise-flavored spirit that boasts a high ABV and a
bright yellow-green color. Pastis is traditionally mixed with water, this concoction creates a cloudy, milky beverage that is refreshing and flavorful. Add about four parts water to one part Pastis, you can add more until it suits your taste. Add ice at the end if you are using it et voila, you have a traditional French drink in front of you, fans of black licorice will enjoy. Bastille Day is becoming more and more popular, especially in New York City, and Americans never shy away from a day to celebrate just about anything with good food and good drinks. While we may not have the day off work or school and we don’t have massive parades and street fairs, we certainly have an abundance of fabulous French restaurants ready to serve us up a bottle of wine and some steak frites, who could say no to that?

The Last Lesson Several weeks ago now, I injured my knee doing something I knew I should not have (well, that was the first lesson - hello, ego and vanity). And during these weeks of easing into recovery, I learned several lessons. The last lesson felt so great. Being in and guiding yoga, I get deep into the hips. The hips’ full range of movement is like the deepest sense of freedom you could have. So open, so deep, so grounding
and full. So when I injured my knee, I wasn’t bending that knee back, not doing full twists, etc., just to keep my knee stable so it could heal. When I get through all of the healing stages, I started to cross my ankles. Whew. I started to do full twists. Whew. And my knees were high off the ground. Begin again. And my cow face legs (or shoelace in yin) are high and not deep, I fell right into acceptance of and love for
it.. and it was knowing that I can begin again and take it where it takes me, knowing and having the intention for that deep place of opening in the hips to clear out all of un-serving energy. In a few days, I started to deepen and the glimpse of the freedom presented itself and I was so grateful for it. I don’t take explanations for granted because I rarely see the obvious, so here is the lesson spelled out : we are meant to relive things, to re-experience things and as we re-experience, we bring to the new experience what we went through before. And we personally keep evolving. And sometimes we have to start from the beginning. So I am happy to take the journey to freeing my hips again. And I am patient. I am loving. I am accepting. That is the best lesson of all - the illustrious byproduct of getting to it through my physical body. Yoga means union; when the body, mind and heart soul come together, that is yoga. What does all this have to do
with my knee injury? When we have to stop dead in our tracks, for whatever reason, we can resist and be miserable, or we can look into it by sitting with it and allowing the inner knowing to rise up to tell us what it all means. . . Those are the lessons. When I recently had to take mega vitamins for six days, I imagined the doses of the vitamins and herbs blossoming into flowers as they entered my stomach and intestines and bloodstream and organs and etc. - flowers blossoming through all my energy channels. My body was a meadow of endless flowers. What I realize is that we can make lemonade from what comes our way (as my friend reminded me the other day that I did) or we can make something really sour. I make lemonade. Refreshing and delicious and just sweet enough. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be compassionate. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

The Nocebo Effect
Ask the DOC
By Peter Galvin, MD
Most people are probably familiar with the placebo effect but may not be aware of its less popular opposite cousin, the nocebo effect. Recent research indicates that the mysterious nocebo effect may be more common than people, including medical professionals, think. The placebo effect occurs when someone, often a volunteer in a clinical trial, is receiving medication or having a procedure where both the medication and procedure is inert, yet they experience positive effects. The nocebo effect occurs when the patient has negative reactions attributable to the medication despite receiving placebo. Most medical research today is done in the form of randomized clinical trials which are double blinded. That means that vol-
unteers are placed in either the treatment group, which receives the medication or procedure being studied, or the control group which receives a placebo. They are placed in each group at random, usually by computer selection. Double blind means that neither the volunteer or the researcher know before and during the trial whether the volunteer is given the study medication or placebo. This eliminates bias but not the placebo and nocebo effects. The nocebo effect may cause the percentage of negative side effects to be overestimated. The word nocebo comes from the Latin “nocere,” which means “to harm.” Placebo comes from the Latin “placere” meaning “to please.” The mechanisms of the nocebo effect are not well understood. Studies on the subject have shown that there are a number of contributing factors, among which are: it is more common in women;
people with anxiety and depression seem more susceptible to it, as are those with aggressive, competitive, or hostile personalities; pessimists are more susceptible to it; the nature of the physician - patient relationship and the way the proposed medication or treatment is presented to the patient are important factors. In 2012, the Technical Institute of Munich, Germany, published an extensive review of 31 different studies of the nocebo effect. They concluded that, although puzzling, the nocebo effect was surprisingly common and can affect medical professionals in their daily practice. They found that the suggestion or expectation of pain elicited more negative responses from study participants. In one study, 50 patients with chronic back pain were given a flexibility test. Half were told that they might experience some pain and the other half were not told this. Afterward, the
first group reported significantly more pain than the group that was kept in the dark. Physicians face a conundrum because of something called informed consent. Legally, physicians are required to tell patients about all positive and negative aspects of a proposed medication or treatment, including possible side effects. Likewise, anyone picking up a prescription from the pharmacy is now given pages of information about potential side effects. If the patient reads this information, it is guaranteed to scare the hell out of them. Physicians need to stress the positives while speaking to a patient while still giving the patient all the information required in informed consent, no easy task. Just goes to show that with all the progress we have made, we still have a lot more to learn about the mysteries of human healing. Questions or comments may be sent to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Coaches Paul, Boomer and Manager Mike led the Wharf team to the Rockaway Little League 10–11-year-old division Championship in dramatic fashion. After losing game one in a best of three series 14-2, The Wharf came back to sweep
the next two games for the title. Paul Pedone Jr. and Brady Benoit led the way with their pitching and Brady was also the hitting star and series MVP after hitting a Home Run over the center field fence. Congratulations to all!

Spotted: Lazer Show
Last week Lazer Louie was spotted in an olive-colored Rockaway Times tee while strumming along with Joe Kenel (shamefully not wearing a Rock Times tee) at Rogers. Well, now we’re not sure if Louie can play music without wearing these shirts with superpowers. Now he’s been spotted wearing a yellow and a coral classic (as he points to an adoring grandchild).

Wrestle Talk
AEW NEWS AND SUMMERSLAM! By Eric Jayden
What's going on wrestling fans? Welcome to another week of Wrestle Talk! Let's dive right in! It's been reported that AEW Superstar Adam Cole has suffered a bad concussion from last week's "Forbidden Door" Pay Per View. Adam was part of a four-way match between, New Japan Pro Wrestling Superstar (NJPW) Jay White and Kazuchika Okada and AEW Superstar Adam Page when he suffered the concussion, and at this time we do not know how long Adam Cole will be out with this injury. As reported by the "Wrestling Observer Live", in regard to AEW programming, it appears that WarnerMedia wants to increase the amount of Pay Per Views AEW runs each year. Now, it’s not official if WarnerMedia has demanded the increase or just merely
asked. But with AEW now owning Ring Of Honor (ROH), they could add Major ROH PPV Events to their current PPV lineup which would be the increase WarnerMedia is looking for. We will keep you posted. Now that we are officially in the summertime, it’s time to talk about one of WWE's staple Pay Per Views 'SummerSlam" which will be held live on July 30, 2022. The Main Event is Roman Reigns (c) vs Brock Lesnar in a Last Man Standing Match, this billed as the last match between these two, but I have to say I don't believe it. Another match that has been officially confirmed is Happy Corbin vs Pat McAfee. Now, I have zero interest in this match and I predict many of you feel the same way. A third match, yet to be confirmed, is The Miz vs Paul Logan, now there is a buildup leading to this match from last week's RAW
Show, where The Miz announced that Paul Logan has begun training to make a return at this year's SummerSlam, this will be an interesting match. We will continue to keep you posted as more matches are announced. The Question of the Week comes Antonio G, in Rockaway Park and he asked, "Is it possible, we will see Bianca Belair vs Rhea Ripley at this year's SummerSlam? I'm a big Rhea Ripley fan and I think she will become RAW Women’s Champion at SummerSlam" Antonio, I also believe Rhea Ripley will beat Bianca Belair at SummerSlam but remember this, you still have Carmella who can play a likely role in that match,
and you still have Becky Lynch and Asuka who can possibly alter who wins the match. Thank You for sending in your questions, please keep sending them to eavil183@yahoo.com and have a great weekend!
