Uncle Richie Paddle

Fun And Competition For A Cause By Michael Leboff Ladies and gentlemen, start your paddleboards. The Uncle Richie Paddle, Rockaway’s first World Paddle Association (WPA) sanctioned stand up paddle board (SUP) race, will take place on Saturday, July 18. All proceeds from the race will go to the Breast Cancer Foundation. This will be the 7th annual Uncle Richie Paddle. It was founded in 2008 by Dennis and Donna Farrell of the West End Paddlers in honor of Uncle Richie Farrell. Each year the event has grown and Andrew Dima, of A-Team Paddleboards, saw it as a great opportunity to bring Rockaway its first sanctioned race. Now that the Uncle Richie Paddle is sanctioned by the WPA, riders can gain points towards the WPA standings. It is one of two WPA-sanctioned races in New York City. Dima, who opened A-Team with his wife, Amy, earlier this year, competes in SUP races up and down the east coast. A-Team is dedicated to growing the SUP community in Rockaway through different types of programs, from the ultra-popular SUP Yoga les-

sons to full moon paddles. Dima was recently sponsored by Riviera Paddlesurf and has landed on the podium in some of his recent competitions. After opening A-Team Paddleboarding he said he began to explore the possibility of bringing a sanctioned race to Rockaway and was referred to Dennis Farrell. “We wanted this to be something that Rockaway can be proud of,” he said of getting the race to be sanctioned. “It will be something to call our own and is going towards a good cause.” Dima and Farrell hope the now sanctioned race will continue to grow and become a Rockaway tradition for a good cause. The Uncle Richie Paddle will consist of three races, an eightmile elite paddle, a three-mile recreational paddle, and a onemile kids’ paddle. The Eight Mile Elite Paddle is the WPA-sanctioned race and will begin at 9 a.m. The racers will start at the cove by the Rockaway Point Yacht Club and head towards the Marine Parkway Bridge, reach the tip of the jetty and then circle back.

Spectators are welcome and will be able to watch the whole race, which is unique in SUP competitions. Most of the time spectators are only able to see racers as they launch at the beginning of the race

and at the finish line. The three-mile race starts at 9:30 a.m. will be a triangular course in the cove. When all paddlers return from the first two races, the kids’ paddle will take place. In addition to the Uncle Richie Paddle, Dima says that they are working with Riis Park Beach Bazaar to put on a race in September. Registration for the Uncle Richie Paddle is now open to all (including kayakers), and those who wish to participate are encouraged to sign up before July 17. The first 50 participants to sign up receive a free t-shirt. Check in for the race will begin at 7 a.m. on July 18 and will be followed by coffee and breakfast. All registered participants will also receive a post-paddle lunch. Following the race, there will be an after-party at the cove with raffle prizes donated by local businesses and Riviera Paddlesurf. Wanna Go To The Movies? LI Film Festival Is A Great Option

Boardwalk PIZZE

By Michael Leboff Lights. Cameras. Action! Thousands of filmmakers, artists, and cinephiles will descend on Long Island this week for the 18th Annual Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) at the Bellmore Movies. The festival, which kicked off with a block of screenings on Wednesday night, will feature almost 200 films over seven showing days. The festival’s reputation is already established in the industry and attracts filmmakers of all levels from all over the world. LIIFE was founded by Anne and Henry Stampfel, Debra Markowitz, and the late Robert Hansen. The Stampfels are not newcomers to the indie film scene. They took over the Malverne Cinema in 1990 and after a few years of screening commercial, studio films -- they converted the theater into a full art house dedicated to showing independent and art films. Originally the festival was held in Eastern Long Island, but soon found its way to Malverne Cinema. As the festival began to grow, the group had a ‘gonna need a bigger boat’ moment and moved the festival to its current home in Bellmore. According to Henry Stampfel, the selection committee tries to support independent filmmakers by watching every film, which he estimates is about 500 shorts and features that are sent in for consideration. “They don’t have to be polished films,” he said of the festival’s open-minded approach. “The filmmakers don’t need to use the best, most expensive equipment. We have filmmakers who are just starting out and we say, ‘wow!’ A lot of talent shines through.”

After selecting which films they will show, the board builds out a schedule chock full with panels, screenings, and an awards ceremony. Although the festival had its kickoff on Wednesday night, the official Opening Night Party, which is attended by participating filmmakers, sponsors, dignitaries, and ticket holders, takes place on Friday, July 10. Awards are handed out for: Best Director, Best Story, Best Feature Film, Best Short Film, Best Long Island Film, Best Student Film, Best Animation, Best Foreign Film and other special categories. Technical categories include: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Lighting. Once the winners, which are chosen through a combination of audience ballot and judging committee, are announced, they are honored at the Closing Night Party and Awards Ceremony on July 16. The festival’s panels include talks on distribution, scriptwriting, a filmmaker panel/breakfast, and much more. The LIIFE attracts plenty of up and coming filmmakers, actors, and writers who are looking to make a name for themselves. In year’s past the festival has been attended by the likes of Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco, Ed Burns, and many more. Markowitz said, despite it being in its 18th year, the festival takes a tremendous amount of work and wouldn’t be a success without the dedication of her team of 20 volunteers. She is expecting upwards of 4,000 people to attend this year’s festival. For more information about the Long Island International Film Expo or to purchase tickets visit the festival’s website at http://longislandfilmexpo.com.

Becoming A Local, (2) By Paula DiGioia

After reading Klaus Biesenbach’s Becoming A Local article in the Rockaway Times Summer Guide, I began to reminisce about my own passageway to the peninsula. I thought I should write about it, so when I’m old and gray sitting on my porch 40 years from now, I’ll remember how I ended up on the Irish Riviera. My introduction to Rockaway was in the fall of 2001. It was my sophomore year of college at Pratt. My roommate, now dearest friend Susanne, invited me to stay over at her house in Breezy Point. It was her birthday weekend and the plan was to go to Patrick’s on 113th (now King of Tacos), to see her friend’s band play, A Hundred Thousand. I recall getting ready in my dorm room. I was wearing a jean mini-skirt and black high boots, which were platform and suede. Very 90’s goth. I didn’t like my shirt – it was a black, stretchy material with a mall collar and sleeveless. We were running late and I didn’t have time to change (again). We rushed in the car and headed to Rockaway. It was my first time crossing the bridge. We spent the night partying. I thought the drummer in the band was HOT and I got his number. We hung out ‘til the early morning, ending the night at Pickles & Pies. I was told to get the Godfather (ham, salami, pepperoni and provolone cheese with lettuce, tomato, sweet peppers, oil and vinegar) and I did. I hazily recall an incident outside Pickles & Pies involving other friends from Pratt, a cab and a crazy commotion with numerous fbombs dropped with a dash of semi-overt racism. Somehow we found our way back to Breezy. I drunkly ate my Godfather on the floor in Susanne’s sister’s bedroom. It was so delicious. I started dating the drummer in the band… and now he’s my husband! Between then and now, I spent many, many days in Rockaway during our courtship – 4th of July parties, all the summer holidays for that matter, random nights, Christmas, you name it. We had some times, alright! I could go on and on about the great memories I’ve made in those years but I want to share one memory that sticks out in

Page 9

THURSDAY, JULY 9, 2015

my mind. It was a turning point for me, the beginning of my assimilation into the Rockaway Borg collective. It was a summer night and we were all waiting on the sidewalk, getting ready to go out to the bar– I can’t recall whose house we were in front of or what bar we ended up at – but I remember what everyone was wearing. I noticed my outfit – a skirt, a yellow V-neck shirt with sparkles around the “v” and matching yellow, glitter-sprinkled high heels. The other girls had on jean shorts, flip-flops and a casual t-shirt or tank. Some had hoodies tied around their waist. I remember feeling out of place. It was obvious I wasn’t from these parts. I still had my Long Islandness front and center. The next time I was on the peninsula, I toned it down a few notches. I suppose at this point I started to recognize Rockaway’s distinctiveness, not just in what people wore, but in the culture. I learned of Rockaway’s eccentricities, its relaxed beach vibe, blended with its city grit attitude, with a twist of Irish pride to top it off. It’s a small town with a big voice surrounded by a city like no other. Now I’m here. Sitting on my porch, looking at the water, wearing flip-flops and an old t-shirt covered in paint, typing away. Looking back, I know I wasn’t 100 percent accepted in the early years. You have to earn your way into the collective. Marrying in is essentially like getting your Rockaway Green Card. Throw a house purchase in the mix, and no one will challenge your status. But I think I was accepted way before then. If you can’t marry in, the assimilation process can be a long one, either they like you or “you’re a herb!” *Don’t get me wrong, I still where glitzy outfits, but there’s a time and a place. Dear Editor, (Re: The soon to open Community House). Many times after the storm I would pass by the Irish Circle and think ‘what a shame to let this place go.’ I moved to the area 12 years ago and always wanted to try all the foods Rockaway had to offer, unfortunately I never did. I promise to check your place out and instead of frequenting my diner (which we have been going to for over 23 years) over the bridge after church on Sunday. Instead, I will stay close home. My family and I want to wish you good luck and a huge welcome to this beautiful place we call home. Maria Curcio

Dear Editor: Congratulations on last week’s front cover. The picture of the World Trade Center tower in between the towers of the Marine Park Bridge was spectacular. Cheers For Volunteers

Dear Editor: The Wounded Warriors are coming to Rockaway and this is a great opportunity for the community to show its appreciation for these brave men and women. The Legends of Valor organization which plans a lot of the activities including the parade deserves a lot of credit for pulling this together every year. Like many events which honor people and causes the volunteers get overlooked but with-

Dear Editor: Select Bus Service (which means closing a lane on Cross Bay and Woodhaven) will be a total disaster. It is not just a Rockaway resident saying this. People at a community board meeting on the mainland said the same thing. Even police say it will cause more traffic problems leading to more problems responding to emergencies. Traveling through Queens is already a nightmare. Don’t let it become worse! Peter Woods

Pink Patrol

Dear Editor: The City made me sin. A few months ago, I parked at night near 8800 Shore Front Parkway. I checked for a hydrant and saw none. Next morning I find a ticket on my windshield. What the ****! $165 fine for parking in a pedestrian path. Maybe in the day I might have seen the curved cut in sidewalk, but not at night. Plus, there was no sign or dashed lines across street indicating the existence of the crossing. I Google earth mapped to see if there were others on SFP, but this is only one. My friend said it happened to her once. What the ****! Since the City can’t or won’t install the pavement /street marking or signage, I decided, if I was going to have to pay the fine, I’d do it myself. I bought a roller and white and red paint to mix into bright pink and painted the curved cut and curb and a large “X” on street. Hopefully I’ve saved others from this entrapment. Sin is in! Signed, Pink Pedestrian

Martin De Porres Hails Graduates

Closing out its third full year in Rockaway Park, Martin De Porres High School handed out diplomas to 24 graduating seniors last month in a ceremony attended by scores of supportive friends and family members. Of the 24 graduating students, nine earned a Regents or Advanced Regents diploma. Eight of the graduates earned vocational certifications – some in culinary preparation and others in barbering apprenticeship. Some of the graduates will go on to specialized vocational training or structured work programs where they will further their employment and life skills, while others will be attending community college or university. “We could not be more proud of this year’s graduating class,

one of the largest in school history, said Martin De Porres executive director Edward Dana. “Through a lot of hard work and perseverance, and with the help of our dedicated faculty, these graduates have demonstrated their ability to overcome challenges and have prepared themselves for rewarding and productive lives beyond high school. We wish them the very best as they continue their journeys. Martin De Porres High School provides special needs students with a pathway to college or the job market through vocational and work placement programs in a variety of fields including automotive, barbering and hair care, culinary skills, maintenance training, computer literacy and horticulture.

Volunteers Needed for Life Rolls On By Katie McFadden Life doesn’t stop when you’re paralyzed or disabled. The Life Rolls On foundation and its adaptive surf program, They Will Surf Again, prove that each year. This year’s local Life Rolls On event will take place on Saturday, July 18, and the organization is putting out a call for volunteers. “When life’s road takes a surprising turn, we ask ourselves ‘what now?’ I sure asked that after my surfing accident. And so did my family and friends. Well, I’ll tell you the answer: ‘keep going!’ Hey, paralysis only means what you let it, Life Rolls On founder Jesse Billauer says. Billauer, a junior US surfer,

was close to becoming a pro when his life changed forever. When a wave slammed him into a sandbar, he was paralyzed instantly. Not wanting to give up his passion, Billauer worked with the surf community to create adaptive surfing equipment. He went on to be the only paralyzed surfer to tackle the big waves of Fiji, and compete at the US Open of Surfing. In 2002, Billauer formed Life Rolls On to show others that they can find freedom beyond paralysis. The foundation hosts the They Will Surf Again and They Will Skate Again programs across the country each year. The annual tour has attracted people of all aged and abilities. Continued on page 32

Ideas For Smarter Transportation

Saving Lives One SemiSmart Traffic Light at a Time By Rick Horan New York City’s transportation policy focuses on reducing the number of pedestrian deaths while slowly sucking the life out of people in automobiles. This statement is based on the premise that our time is the most precious thing that we have. When it’s taken from us without good reason, we lose a piece of our lives that can never be replaced. Such is the case with the traffic lights that control the City’s intersections. Like an insidious disease, they often stop us for no good reason, methodically stealing our most valuable resource. It happens so slowly that it is barely noticed, to drivers and passengers, young and old. Many of these signals are completely unnecessary yet we stop and wait like mindless lemmings, doing our best to ignore the fact that there is no traffic crossing in front of us. Two such traffic lights in Rockaway are at Beach Channel Drive at 101st St. and 104th Streets. They serve no purpose twenty-two hours a day and alone are responsible for stealing 130,000 hours of our lives every year. According to a time management study by Priority Management Pittsburgh an average of six months of a person’s life is spent at red stop lights. My guess is probably half of that time is unnecessary. Other cities are addressing the problem. Bellevue, WA recently implemented adaptive traffic lights along its main downtown arteries. Travel times have decreased by 36% during peak rush hour and 44% along another heavily trafficked street. Sydney, Australia reports a 37% decrease in total travel time, 21% decrease in total stops, decreases of 6% CO2 and 5% NO emissions. Maybe DOT should be implementing this technology along Woodhaven Blvd to speed up cars and buses instead of SBS. Don’t hold your breath. Instead of sophisticated networked or adaptive “smart traffic signals, let’s start by demanding that the dumbest lights are equipped with actuators known as “inductive loops that are embedded in the roadway to sense the presence of cars on

114-04 Beach Channel Dr. - Ground Fl s 2OCKAWAY .9 side streets. This technology has been around since 1922 is typically augmented by push buttons for the safe crossing of pedestrian and bicyclists. If just 10% of the 10,000 traffic signals in the city received this basic upgrade we would save a total of 90 million hours a year! Allow right on red and save another 10 million hours. 100 million man hours is equivalent to saving 152 lives at 75 years each. I call that Vision 100 Million! That’s not even including the millions of gallons of saved fuel, tons of reduced carbon emissions and increased safety that would result. The good news is that the technology to fight this tragic waste of life is readily available and inexpensive (<$10k per intersection). The bad news is that despite the rhetoric, the City seems fundamentally opposed to automobiles as an efficient mode of transportation and perhaps worse, has little regard for the value of our time (i.e. lives). We must stop blaming politicians and bureaucrats and demand that they, or their successors, implement a traffic control system that values our time as much as we do. Keep Walking Buddy, No Seriously….. By Lou Pastina Did you know there is a step counting craze happening across the world right now? Fitbit, you know those wristbands you see people wearing all the time, just went public on the NYSE at about at $ 30 plus bucks a share. And now it trades at almost $ 38 a share and the company is worth almost $ 8 billion dollars! What does this company do? It counts your steps and tells you how far you have walked. I recently participated in a couple of Rockaway runs and was surprised to find out that no one runs anymore! There were very few people at these events. Maybe the weather wasn’t great, and maybe there wasn’t a beer blast after the race like the good ole days, but still, there were very few runners. I am guilty of this step phenomenon too. I have a fitbit and it syncs to my smart phone. In addition, I have two other pedometers on my smart phone and it is rare that all three agree on how many steps I take. I have to admit that it is a bit addictive. I mean I now

track my food intake (cheating only occasionally), add my weight (cheating daily), and anything else it asks for! I just happily do it and feel like I am managing my health. I have lost some weight by doing this, but I am driven more to check all three daily and monitor my steps than my weight. At first the goal was 10,000 steps, which is supposedly 5 miles. When you have done this a couple of times, you try to get to 15,000 steps, then 20,000 steps, and all of a sud-

den you find that you can do 30,000 steps in a day. That’s 15 fifteen miles by the way. You start thinking crazy things like “ a marathon is about 50,000 steps, hey I could do that…”. And maybe you can, certainly thousands do marathons every year. Why not you? There are other benefits too; walking is easier on the knees and ankles, and some can even chew gum at the same time! If you add music to this fitness routine you find that you can really get a head of steam up.

And if you start to look about the neighborhoods you walk in you start to notice things, like the architecture of the neighborhoods, the people who live in the neighborhoods, the types of restaurants that are in those neighborhoods and all sorts of stuff. And it’s good for your health too! I know I have been advocating riding a bike and visiting all the great places in Rockaway and I definitely recommend the bike rather than a car during the summer. But what if everyone started walking? Do we really need to drive to 129th or 116th or anywhere in Rockaway? What if we started walking again! We could all say hellos to each other just like the old days. There would be people out on the street, less traffic, and we would all be getting our steps in! Pretty cool, right? The only thing that bothers me about these fitbits and apple watches is the sneaking suspicion that one day someone in Silicon Valley will push a button and control us all! But heck, that’s probably already happened, so why not just take a walk, seriously!

Elegante Restaurant – Excellence For All By Sarah Boyle “Great Food. Great Atmosphere. Great People,” that’s the motto of Elegante. Diners hungry for a taste of Italy and some authentic Italian cuisine, don’t have to travel to Europe to find it. Their stomachs can be satisfied by taking a trip to 92-01 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, where Elegante Restaurant awaits. The food is definitely great, as I can attest to after I scarfed down three slices of pepperoni pizza. And the people are even better. Founded by a family of three brothers, the Amato family works to create and maintain a family friendly atmosphere, bringing their home to the Rockaway storefront. Frank Amato, and his brother Tony, opened the restaurant in 1982, gradually building a reputation in the Rockaway community for good food, and a homey atmosphere. Starting his first business at the tender age of 17, Frank had an entrepreneurial drive. For a short time, he ventured into the video rental business, opening Elegante Video across the street from the pizzeria in 1987. He soon realized the restaurant deserved his full-

time focus so he closed the video store, and helped build one of the more popular places in Rockaway. Frank does not take all credit for the pizzeria’s success, as he says, “My brother Tony taught me everything I knew.” Elegante brings truth to the “Great atmosphere” aspect of their slogan, as each customer is carefully attended to. “It’s all about being friendly to customers, being friendly to everyone that walks in, we treat everybody like family,” says Amato. As the saying goes, “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” For the Amato family, working at Elegante is a pastime, a hobby that they love. Walking in the door you feel a sense of their home, from the Italian being spoken in the kitchen, to the painting on the wall of a young Mr. Amato when he was living in Italy. Elegante Restaurant, like most, did not escape Sandy’s wrath. A complete makeover was necessary. As a result, the physical interior may have undergone some unfamiliar changes to those who witnessed the restaurant’s original swinging saloon doors and

FRANK AMATO dining area. But never fear, the restaurant may have suffered a few physical changes, but the atmosphere and quality food and service remain unchanged. Elegante servers continue to provide quality food and service with a wonderful menu. Taking a new approach to a traditional menu, they “always try to improve the store,” says Amato. The restaurant is open seven days a week and they offer delivery, too (even to the beach!).

If “home is where the heart is,” Elegante is certainly a piece of home for the Amato family. Their heart goes into their food and service. And as my three slice onslaught attests, there’s plenty of great taste in there too. (Sarah Boyle is entering her sophomore year at Lehigh University. She is a summer intern at The Rockaway Times. She is doing profiles on businesses that have been operating for 25 years or more).

Youth Court Opens in Far Rock By Michael Leboff Another step is being taken to stimulate goodwill between the NYPD and the residents of Far Rockaway. The Far Rockaway Youth Court is a new initiative being spearheaded by the Queens Public Library, Queens Law Associates through the Queens DA’s office, and New York City Council Member Donovan Richards. The vision of the program is to engage teens and give them a positive interaction with the legal justice system. High school students are eligible to participate with parental/caregiver permission. They are given 8-12 hours of training in the roles of a judge, a juror, a prosecuting attorney and a defending attorney. Participants will conduct mock trials during the training phase and beginning in September they will be adjudicating real cases. “We all know that a young person who has committed a misdemeanor and is given probation is definitely not gaining anything from the experience and will very possibly wind up the worst for hanging around a probation office with others who have had involvement with the law, Joanne King, Director of Communications for Queens Library said. “This program provides a constructive alternative. The program will be conducted under the supervision of Queens Law Associates and would only involve non-violent misdemeanor cases. “The teens will get real insight into the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a civil society, King said. “If there are guilty verdicts, they have sentencing op-

tions such as community service at the library or attending four library workshops, etc. In addition to promoting a healthier relationship between youth and law officers, King believes that this forward-looking program will also give students an inside look at how the judicial process works. It will teach the students what is hard evidence as opposed to what is hearsay evidence, and it will get to the root of why a crime was committed. “It touches on a lot of things, King said. “It’s youth engagement, it’s fostering a more positive relationship between people and law enforcement, and it touches on career exploration. According to the National Association of Youth Courts, there are over 1,000 youth courts around the country but this will be the first in the Queens Library System. The timing of the Far Rockaway Youth Court’s launch coincides with a number of groups and initiatives that are trying to promote a healthier relationship between residents and law officers. Last week, Jazmine Outlaw, a 20-year-old Far Rockaway resident was sworn into her new role as President of the 101st Precinct Council. Outlaw’s mission is to nurture the relationship between police and citizens through community policing and to create an open conversation between cops and citizens. The Far Rockaway Youth Court officially launched on July 8 and there will be an open house on July 13 for parents and students to learn more about the program. The program will take place in the Teen Library at 2002 Cornaga Ave. at Beach 20th Street.

W.S. SMITH HURDLER’S CAROUSEL

The residents of Beach 131st Street kicked off the 4th of July with their annual parade. This parade marked the 25th anniversary of the parade that celebrates our community’s loyalty to country. We celebrate our community, the families that support each other and children that bring us all so much joy. We are a resilient and caring community. Many of the neighbors on our block are considered extended family. The parade is a way for folks to catch up on the community news and enjoy the beach. A photo attached shows residents at the first parade 25 years ago. We celebrated that first parade by honoring Al DeMatteis for his service to the community. The pho-

(We’re running this item again because in last week’s edition the following text was cut off). At the intersection of Bch. 103rd street and Seaside’s Midway stood the W.S. Smith Hurdler’s Carousel and its refreshment Pavilion and Healy’s Place, which is still in business today on 108th street. This carousel burned in 1911 and was replaced by Nunley’s Carousel in

1914. Note: the goat cart touring vehicles in this 1906 image of Seaside. A correction to the 6/25 column about Playland: The senior Geist died in 1963 and his son Richard took over Playland. Then Moses began his moves on the section that he couldn’t get his hands on, in order to build a Viaduct across the Peninsula from Crossbay Bridge to Shorefront Pkwy, for starters.

Urban Upbound: There For Those In Need By Michael Leboff Urban Upbound’s mission is to help participants lift themselves out of poverty using a variety of tactics to achieve three longterm goals for their participants: achieving economic security and self-sufficiency, transferring intergenerational wealth, and fostering community revitalization. The organization, which was started in Long Island City but now has an operation on Beach 71st Street, believes that education is paramount to the success of their participants. Urban Upbound works with the youth in their program to educate them about financial aid and SAT Prep. Not only are these programs help the young people in the program, but their parents as well. Additionally the Urban Upbound College Access Alumni Network is there to support students through the many challenges that can present themselves during college. also helps participants seek out and land internships that will teach them valuable life skills that will carry into college and beyond. While education and youth ser-

vices are at the core of Urban Upbound’s vision, here in Rockaway the plan is to help the community by offering assistance to those in need. Urban Upbound believes that the revitalization of Far Rockaway starts with helping those in need get back on their feet, whether it be by helping with a job search or by helping clients navigate the process of acquiring food stamps. They run a Workforce1 Career Center in conjunction with NYC Department of Small Business Services. This center works in collaboration with NYC Business Solutions offer our clients access to a wide array of employment opportunities including providing job seekers with employment tools and counseling. Clients are matched with a career counselor and provided one-on-one guidance in order to create a personalized employment plan. Urban Upbound prepares their clients for every interaction with potential employers. Clients meet with their counselors at the onsite computer lab to prepare for interviews, resume and cover letter workshops, and job search assistance. While some organizations

in a similar space just focus on getting their clients employed, Urban Upbound focuses on matching their clients with employers that offer career ladders and opportunities for upward mobility. Urban Upbound’s services don’t end there. They also work within a coalition with other organizations to provide other services like housing assistance and health counseling. Ife Maijeh, a longtime Far Rockaway resident and Benefits Outreach Specialist at Urban Upbound, sees a lot of potential for the organization in the area. “We

believe in this area and approach wholeheartedly,” Maijeh said. “We recognize what this particular community needs.” When clients find jobs or no longer need assistance from Urban Upbound they don’t just fall on the wayside. The organization works diligently to keep track on their clients all year-round, consistently checking in on them throughout the process To learn more about Urban Upbound and their work within the Far Rockaway community, visit their website at www.urbanupbound.org.

Surprise Waves Pay A Visit What a great run of waves we’ve had so far this summer. Unusual in that June are July are statistically some of the worst months for waves, sans hurricane waves. This week’s column we’ll put up some pics. While it’s always great to see your buddies get nice long rides and we all like to see a few good

wipeouts too, but we definitely don’t like seeing people getting injured from collisions due to overcrowding. Poor Rosalyn de Castro copped one in the head from a fellow surfer. Almost Heaven: Smoothie Haven

By Octavia Willis In the mood for something smooth? Find your way to Smoothie Haven in Arverne. Opened just 3 weeks ago at 74-16 Beach Channel Drive, Smoothie Haven has already begun to make a name for itself by creating fresh, new, healthy smoothies using 100 percent fruit. You can enjoy a refreshing smoothie on a hot summer day with plenty of options to choose from. Emmanuel Loncke, a 30-year-old college graduate and Arverne resident, is the owner of Smoothie Haven. Loncke lived in Arverne before moving to Atlanta when he was 19. After a five year stay in Atlanta, Loncke moved back to Arverne and soon realized there was a need for healthy options in the area. Loncke decided there was no point in waiting and decided to start a business that would allow him to serve up healthy tasty smoothies and protein shakes at reasonable prices. When it came to choosing a name for

the business, Loncke decided on Smoothie Haven because smoothies are what they serve and haven reminded him of the word heaven. However, Loncke says there are no words to describe heaven. Loncke and his staff of two teenagers and three adults work hard preparing ingredients and products for the next day. They aim to produce smoothies with smooth service. The flavors at Smoothie Haven are all natural with no artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners or preservatives. Fresh fruits like pineapple, strawberries, oranges and mangos are just what you need on any day of the week. With average prices like $4.99 for a 12 oz. smoothie, free smoothie sampling throughout the day, and specials like ‘Buy One $7 Purchase and Get the Second Half Off ’ every Tuesday it is sure to draw a crowd. Smoothie Haven is a grab-and-go place and is take out only. Patrons place their order at the window selecting a smoothie creation from the extensive menu or they can build their own combination smoothie. Top sellers at Smoothie Haven include flavors like cherry with wheat grass, strawberry and banana, pineapple and mango, and strawberry mixed with raspberry and blueberries. My personal favorite is their chocolate, peanut butter and banana smoothie. Combining Loncke’s fifteen years of restaurant experience with the help of close friend Dr. Katherine Phillips who lives in

Atlanta, Smoothie Haven has the looks of a new Rockaway staple. Smoothie Haven’s next door neighbor is the Arverne Pilgrim Church and since they share a building I wondered if there is a connection between the two. Turns out, Loncke’s father, Dennis Loncke, is the pastor and overseer of Arverne Pilgrim Church. And while it is a blessing to have family next door, Loncke is looking beyond just the Beach Channel Drive location. He’s hoping to operate smoothie trucks around the city. In the meantime, Loncke likes to give back to his community so if you are a YMCA member or City Employee you are eligible to receive a 20 percent discount at Smoothie Haven with a show of ID. If you would like more information about Smoothie Haven visit www.smoothiehaven.info or call 347-926-3292. (Octavia Willis is an intern at The Rockaway Times. She is attending the College of Staten Island and lives in Arverne).

Great Flooring Begins With Us

What is your personal calling? Do you live each day just trying to get things done on your to do list or do you passionately love what you do and the days are not long enough? Each one of us has one or more gifts to offer in this life and yet we often kill our dreams for one reason or another. Perhaps it is simply to survive and make a living doing jobs that don’t always satisfy our souls. Although it is necessary to work and provide for yourself and perhaps your family, there should also be room for your dreams or passion in life. Do not think too much about it, just do it. We are often told by others when pursuing our dream jobs: “it’s impossible! That’s the first obstacle. So we begin to fear the idea of pursuing our calling. We bury it deep within ourselves and go about our daily chores. We delay and wait for the right time. If we happen to have the courage to follow our intuition, we are afraid to hurt or insult someone not wanting to abandon our responsibilities at our work or home. Yet, these people who love you would support you fully on your journey. Fear is the biggest and strongest emotion that will accompany you on this path. If this is your

passion, you do not want to fail. Way too much pressure - it seems easier to live the normal life of disliking your job and just showing up to do what you have to do. “The secret to life is falling seven times and getting up eight times. -Paulo Coelho Passions are to be lived. Oscar Wilde said, “Each man kills the thing he loves. Ouch! This could not be closer to the truth for so many. I believe in living, loving and following your passion. Keep your friends close by and be true blue. You will soar and no one will doubt you. They will know you are living your dream and stand by you. Life is way too short to doubt yourself. When you find your passion you will never work another day in your life. Life is good but not if you suffocate your dreams. You will feel cheated and harness bad energy. Live, love, be happy and go with the flow. Be secure and know your place in this world. Once you are grounded, you will fly high. Listen to your intuition, if it says No Go, stay where you are; if it says just do it, well then do it. Passion is real. Personal callings are the key to happiness. Follow your passion; don’t let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Everything is possible.

Next week American sports fans will be left to their own devices when Major League Baseball takes off for its annual All Star Game. The festivities get started on Monday night with the Home Run Derby and the Midsummer Classic takes place on Tuesday night. The next two nights there are no scheduled games. And with the NFL, NBA, and NHL in the middle of their offseason, sports nerds everywhere are wondering, how will we survive? In America, the sports landscape is ruled by the four (or three, depending who you ask) major sports: football, baseball, basketball, and (again, depending who you ask) hockey. While American summers traditionally belong to baseball, it is also a great time to throw yourself into a sport and/or sporting events that you may not have paid attention to had they competed with the NFL or NBA seasons. Over the last month, the American public fell in love with the US Women’s National Soccer Team. The US Women traveled north and competed against 23 other nations in the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. America has been trying to figure out how it feels about soccer, the world’s most popular sport, for decades. Although the game has grown tremendously in the States since we hosted the 1994 World Cup, it is still shrugged off by a

large portion of the population and rarely pulls the ratings needed to be featured on major networks. Even so, the US Women’s team took hold of back pages across the country as they marched towards the World Cup Final. In 2011 the US Women were heavily favored to win the World Cup Final over Japan. The team looked in control and had a late lead disappear before losing in the cruel and unusual fashion of penalty kicks. This year the team was hellbent on winning their first World Cup since the 1999 World Cup team defeated China in dramatic fashion. The team made its way through the group stage without conceding a goal and after edging out Colombia, China, and Germany in the knockout stages, they were set to face-off against Japan in the final. They left no doubt. The US scored four goals in the first half, including three by captain Carli Lloyd, en route to a 5-2 rout over Japan. Not only was the score line impressive, but the game averaged 25.4 million viewers -- making it the most-watched soccer game (men’s or women’s) in US television history. The previous record was held by the 2014 World Cup match between the USA and Portugal last summer. It averaged 18.7 million viewers. The team will now travel to New York City on Friday for a ticker-tape parade. As the women are showered with glory, the men’s team will try to impress in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is a regional tournament for teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean. The US kicked off their Gold Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Honduras on Tuesday night.

first. Then the only effective way to kill a weed other than pulling it out is to kill it at the root. So no matter if you’re using an organic killer, home remedy or store bought, you want to apply it to the foliage and let it be absorbed into the weed and eventually into the root. It is also best to apply when the foliage is dry and allow at least a few hours of dry weather and not watering to let it be absorbed, it is also better to apply it in the early morning when the sun is not too hot so the weed killer has time to be absorbed before drying up. As I said, Roundup works best for me. I would recommend applying the Roundup to the foliage of the weeds you’re trying to get rid of between 7 and 10 in the morning. Apply it heavily and do not water your lawn/garden till that evening. Re-apply every three or four days for about four applications or till the weeds die off. Now I am sure many of you have other methods that you would recommend. Please send them in to me at rocktimesdiy@gmail.com and I would be happy to do a follow up on this article.

By Artie Wallace One of our readers emailed me with a question about weeds. Thanks for writing in Andre, this is not my area of expertise, but I will cover it the best I can. First off, there is a choice to make between chemical and homemade weed killers. If you can find an organic mix that kills your weeds, that is great, but once you start adding chemicals such as bleach, ammonia, etc., I think you’re better off using something that you buy in the store. In my experience Roundup works best. I researched this topic for this article and some home remedies include bleach, salt, ammonia, vinegar and even vodka. On the other side of the coin, there are so many weed killers you can buy in the store, which brings us to the root of the problem (pardon the pun). You need to identify the weeds you’re trying to get rid of before you can start working on what you will use to get rid of them. Different weed killers will work great on some weeds and not work at all on others. So go online and research your weeds

Facts You Probably Don’t Need One of our dedicated readers, Sean McVeigh, is a big fan of our “Facts” column. This week’s edition was submitted by Sean. And that’s a fact. ☛☛☛ ☛A day is longer than a year on Venus. ☛The term ‘nimrod’ is often used as a synonym for goofball. Wrongfully so. ‘Nimrod’ was actually a famous hunter in the Old Testament. Confusion began when Bugs Bunny sarcastically called Elmer Fudd that and people ran with it.

Waldorf Turkey Salad Recipe

☛Stephen King only charges $1 to adapt his short stories into films. He calls them ‘dollar babies’. ☛Howard Hughes once bought an entire casino just to tear down their neon sign. The sign, visible from his bedroom, apparently kept him up at night. ☛97 percent of the Earth’s water is saltwater. ☛Lake Baikal in Russian has nearly 1/5 of all of the fresh water on Earth.

By Sharon Feldman Crisp apples, celery and walnuts teamed with lean poultry turn any meal into a picnic. The combination of tastes and textures makes this Waldorf Turkey Salad a cool classic.

☛90 percent of Earth’s volcanoes are underwater.

TOTAL TIME: Prep/Total Time: 25 min. YIELD:4 servings

☛Because sunlight reflects off water, Earth is the brightest planet from a distance.

Ingredients:

☛In space, astronauts cannot cry properly, because there is no gravity, so the tears can’t flow down their faces. ☛It was once against the law to slam your car door in a city in Switzerland. ( We really don’t want to give New York City any ideas….)

■1

cup (8 ounces) plain yogurt tablespoons honey ■ 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger ■ 1/4 teaspoon salt ■ 2 cups cubed cooked turkey breast ■2

■1

cup cubed apple cup seedless red grapes, halved ■ 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery ■ 1/2 cup raisins ■ 4 lettuce leaves ■ 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts ■1

Directions: In a small bowl, whisk the yogurt, honey, ginger and salt. In a large bowl, combine the turkey, apple, grapes, celery and raisins; add yogurt mixture and toss to coat. Serve on lettuce; sprinkle with walnuts.

Cheers For The Lifeguards I don’t often wear a hat, but if I did I would tip it for an awesome team of lifeguards who patrol some of the roughest surf on the Rockaway Peninsula in the Beach 80s and 90s. This past 4th of July weekend, with record crowds and some great surf the lifeguard crew at Beach 92nd-93rd did an incredible job of keeping hundreds of swimmers safe. What an amazing job they did making multiple rescues while keeping the 100-foot buffer zone at Beach 91st, between the swim and surf boarding beach clear. They even made a few rescues of very amateur surfers who had just rented boards for the very first time! Following Super Storm Sandy, “sustainability” and “resiliency” became the big buzzwords. Many groups and agencies elaborately presented at community meetings plans for Rockaway residents to take heed, such as solar paneling and other green energy technologies. The questions posed by many residents were “How much?” and “How soon?” Most Sandy impacted people were pressed by time and quickly depleting funds. You sensed frustration among the presenters who meant well with valid and appropriate ideas. Nonetheless, missing a simple point – the preexisting structures of community sustainability and resiliency. Growing food is not a new concept for Rockaway or sustainable habits for that matter, such as composting. Furthermore, resiliency, in it’s many forms, is not an uncommon thing. Rockaway has its own structures of sustaining itself through hard times, and bouncing back from disasters, whether natural, economic or environmental. As I raise a family in Rockaway after moving here 10 years ago from Brooklyn, I feel both excitement and concern. Initiatives to be more “green” following Hurricane Sandy are good, but I wonder about what we are missing in looking at what already exists. There is a great deal of “new” and it should be embraced even if it’s not what we are used to. However, don’t overlook what we already had going for us, and let’s

This awesome crew led by 14year lifeguard lieutenant Scott Blitstein and 10-year senior lifeguard Brian Saaveda have with them some really great young lifeguards. Five-year lifeguard Lauren Daugherty, Three- year lifeguard Jaiel Perez, and Two-year lifeguard Ashley DeLeo are mastering the craft of rough-surf lifesaving under the guidance of Scott and Brian. The area they patrol is one of the most difficult to maintain in Rockaway. It is adjacent to the surfing-only beaches at Beaches 87th-91st and boasts some of the largest crowds, and the best surf on the peninsula and since it is so close to the surfing beaches,

they are the go-to lifeguards when there is an issue on the surfing beaches. These guys were in and out of the water all day even just checking on people who looked a little out of place or unsure in the surf. This crew and all the lifeguards do

Family That Plants Together… Grows Together continue to build on that. When I look for an example of generational resiliency, I think of the Loncke family. They have been in Rockaway for over 20 years. Dennis Loncke came to the United States from Guyana 37 years ago. In Guyana he farmed and managed a large-scale plantation in his native country. Twenty years ago he came to Rockaway to raise his family of four children with his wife Rosalind. Dennis also had a higher calling to this community – to serve as a pastor. He founded Arverne Pilgrim Church over 10 years ago. In addition, to his spiritual service, he saw a problem that he could not overlook – families needing additional educational support for their children. That in-

spired him to establish the Arverne Pilgrim Community Center. In addition, to these roles, he worked as a construction worker and still farmed his modest piece of backyard land using every inch of soil to grow collards, tomatoes, broccoli, cucuzza squash, basil, parsley, and mint (veggies vary year to year). Even after devastating losses to his church, community center and his home resulting from Hurricane Sandy, he and his family moved forward leaning on those community roots established over the years. Community and congregation members helped in the rebuilding and financing along with new friends from the outpour of volunteers following the storm.

an incredible job day in and day out protecting us all! Hat or no hat, let’s all give these great young men and women a big THANK YOU for making our beach going experience so safe! THANK YOU Scott, Brian, Lauen, Jaiel, and Ashley! Dennis never ceased to farm in his yard after the storm. He actually inspired the formation of the Rockaway Backyard Collective. I recently went to his yard to borrow a rake, and had to photograph this year’s layout and harvest. Upon my visit, I stopped by the church just around the corner. To my delight, I got to sample an energy smoothie at the new smoothie bar located at the front of church – a walk-up window. A business venture undertaken by one of his sons, Manny (Emmanuel). Manny expressed his concern with the lack of healthy food businesses in the area. Smoothie Haven is located on the Northern side of Arverne. I spoke with two costumers who were sanitation workers on their lunch break. They said they’d rather buy a protein shake for $8 than a Subway or Checkers meal and feel lousy the rest of the day. Upon testing my second delicious smoothie - a blend of fruits and greens, and meeting the Smoothie Haven team (Manny’s childhood friends, church members and wife), I thought of the scripture, “You reap what you sow.” Those simple early lessons from dad - plant, waist nothing, get involved, identify a problem and let the people pull in their own resources to solve the problem. Smoothie Haven is located at 7416 Beach Channel Drive just a block away from the YMCA - walkup window in front of Arverne Pilgrim Church. Discounts for YMCA members and city workers.

DIARY OF A FAT MAN Sugar Is The Devil By Bruce Bernfeld People are stopping me on the street and at Silver Gull saying kind things about this column and rooting me on and even saying that they are joining me in eating healthy. I am trying to not get a swelled head and I realize this is The Rock and not Washington DC but ...watch out Lew Simon!! Let’s talk about sugar!! Sugar is the Devil! Here I am a month into my new lifestyle and I already have turned into that guy that you dread talking to because all he does is talk about healthy eating and the harm you are doing to yourselves by eating sugar and processed foods. Just nod and agree and go on doing what you are doing. I won’t judge! But, consumption of sugary drinks alone are responsible for 184,000 worldwide deaths a year! (Diabetes and cardiovascular problems lead the way of those diseases that can be attributed to excess sugar). There is NO NEED to drink these drinks!! Have I mentioned my wife Eileen? She is joining me on this journey She has already dropped six lbs. More importantly, Eileen is a Type II diabetic and she has seen marked improvement in her health after only a month! Eileen has suffered through early morning headaches for years. Even going so far as seeing MDs and having a brain scan. A while ago our cousin Joey recommended not

having any sugary foods before bedtime. Of course, no one really listens to cousins so she kept up the same lifestyle of cookies and ice cream before bedtime. For the past month, no processed sugar at all and guess what? NO HEADACHES!! In addition, in the past, whenever Eileen got hungry she would get grumpy and grouchy and shaky (3 out of the seven dwarves?). Guess what? No sugar, No Grumpy! She still gets hungry but it doesn’t manifest itself in uncomfortable emotions (uncomfortable for ME, mostly!) So... What can replace all that sugar and processed food in our diets? I found this great listing on the internet that lists 15 foods that are loaded with nutrients and really taste great: Your Guide To Healthy & Holistic Weight Loss With Danielle DuBoise & Whitney Tingle We learn the health benefits of a different nutrient almost every other day it seems. We need more antioxidants, more iron, more magnesium, but we can’t just keep eating more food. While counting calories is now thought to be a poor approach to losing weight, we still know that we can’t eat an unlimited number. And so it becomes important to get the most nutrients possible out of the calories we do consume. In other words, we need to eat nutrient dense foods, with plenty of nutritional value and almost no calories. Some other nutrient dense

foods include beets, lemons, tomatoes, grapefruit, and turnips. I have included apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, Mushrooms, Watermelon and zucchini into my diet this month and waiting on deck in my fridge are Kale, celery, carrots and Brussels sprouts. The Kale is mainly for green smoothies that I will be making in my new Vitamix which arrived yesterday, which leads us to the next mini- topic: Dieting can be expensive. The Vitamix

alone cost nearly $500 but people I know and trust are singing its praises on how it can really be a tool in helping one move on to a healthy lifestyle. I’ll let you know next week after I get the hang of food preparation the “blending way.” Small farm grown, local, organic fruits and vegetables are also quite costly, but hey, I haven’t been to any restaurants lately so it is a wise fiscally responsible choice I think!! And wait till I lose a lot of weight and the wardrobe needs refreshing!!!! Random Notes on This and That: 1. The Whey Protein Powder Isolate that I wrote about last week was a dismal failure (Unless you enjoy spending an entire day in the bathroom). Guess I must be a bit lactose intolerant. I bought a Soy based Protein powder and that did the trick 2. A food label that says: LOW FAT also means HIGH SUGAR. They gotta get the taste from something!! 3. Made it through July 4th weekend with no problems at all. Hope you all had a great 4th And now the latest results from the tote board: June 9 288lbs June 15. 282 June 22. 280 June 29. 280 July 6. 275

AHOY ROCKAWAY !

Water Temperature 76*F- Broad Channel (Goose Pond Marsh) Hope everyone had a safe 4th of July weekend, the weather was slightly unstable, but there were some breaks in the rain and some sunny weather to get the fishing in. Thank you to Julie Coyne of Broad Channel for assisting with the Rockaway Times Fishing Report water temperature readings this week. Julie provided us with the correct name of the area in Broad Channel that the RTFR water temperature samples were being recorded from. This week’s water temperature samples were taken from the “inside (bay) and are

a few degrees warmer than the water temperature readings on the “outside (ocean). Bernie Matzen was drifting from Beach 9th Street east on Sunday and reports that he had brought many short fluke aboard his boat. Bern had lots of fluke action, but the best he could do was two fluke at 17.5 (under-sized) so back they all went. He also reports fluke as small as 5 were caught and returned to the water. Boat traffic was reported as “heavy in the back bays this past weekend, as many party boats tried their luck in the back. Bern

has noticed that in the west end bays there is not as many bait fish (spearing) as last year. Bern said, “You don’t hear that shower of bait fish jumping out of the water like you usually do this time of year. Speaking of bait and jumping out of the water... Tom’s Bait and Tackle in Rockaway Park on B.C.D. Tom reports that the fluke fishing is still doing well with many shorts mixed in (typical for this time of year) in the bay. Tom says that approximately 20 percent of the fluke caught are “keepers (over 18) and are taking offerings of spearing. Tom reports that he has observed a good amount of baitfish in the water (spearing). He says over the holiday weekend the beaches of S.W. Nassau County were closed for three hours due to a report of a shark sighting. “I definitely saw some type of dark colored marine animals in the water, possibly they were dolphin, but they were dark in color, Tom said. “Whether it was a shark or not, I don’t know. There have been recent shark sightings around the area, and that’s no fish story. Well that’s our July 4th weekend report Anglers, until next time...

Rockaway Little League

Marlins Win Pee Wee Senior Championship

The Slices ‘n Ices Marlins defeated the Laquila Group A’s 9-1 to capture the Pee Wee Senior Championship in Rockaway Little League. The Marlins started off the game by scoring five runs in the 1st inning with singles by Gene Sabastiano, James Youssef, Danny Degrechie and Sean Byrne, walks to Paul Armour and Miles Ramnarance and a double by Connor McElhinney. Connor McElhinney also pitched the first two innings striking out six without allowing a run. Gene Sebastiano pitched innings 3 and 4, striking out four while only allowing one run. He was helped by great defensive plays by James and Connor in the 3rd inning. In the 4th inning, with the A’s threatening to rally, Gene received help from outfielders Louis DiGiovanni, Gerard Guglielmo, Miles Ramnarance and Sean Byrne limiting the A’s to just one run. James Youssef closed out the game striking out six and was helped by outstanding defense from infielders Mike Sabastiano, Danny Degrechie and outfielder Thomas Arnold. The Marlins entered the playoffs as the second seeded team and won out, beating the top-seeded A’s twice in five days to secure the championship. EJ Castellon was unable to make the game but was a great teammate all season. Coaches Jay Byrne and Andrew Youssef are very proud of the boys

this past season. They showed great sportsmanship, teamwork, camaraderie and perseverance. Not all records reflect the true measure of a team. A team is measured by its competitiveness, its ability to bounce back after a heartbreaking loss, and most importantly by its heart. With all that said, the Pee Wee Senior Mahoney Real Estate Reds are the mark of a true winning team. In spite of their 2-10 record during the season and losing in the playoffs, the boys on this team played like champions every time they showed up at the ball field. Special moments included offensive power by hitters, Matthew Schneider, Michael Nestor, Ricky Carioti, Hunter Gilhuley, Tristen Guzman, Ryan Meyer, and Christopher Sautner, while defensively, Michael Nestor, Matthew Schneider, Danny Hickey, Brendan Kinnane, Ryan Mazzuchin, and Aiden Negron all made spectacular plays during the season. As for pitching, Michael Nestor and Ricky Carioti, both veteran pitchers to Pee Wee Sr., pitched very well, while Nolan Doherty and Eamonn Buckley made their pitching debuts, showing true potential for years to come. It is with great pride that coaches Phil Gilhuley, Michael Doherty, and Howard Schneider commend the efforts put out by their team, knowing that they all have a bright future ahead of them. The Ram Title Royals were the queens of the Major Softball regular season but faced tough competition in the playoffs. After losing to the eventual champion Bartoli Chiropractic Orioles in round 1, the Royals took advantage of double elimination and came out strong against the Knights of Columbus Reds. Behind the stellar pitching of Morgan Connelly and fielding of Beth Dunn at short and Bridget Rose at first, the Royals took an early lead of 4-1. Bats were swinging hard, as team co-captains Connolly and Marie Elise Piccione delivered back to back singles, followed by CeCe Agoglia with a double and two RBIs. Next two innings were quiet for both teams. Bottom of fourth, Royals scored three

off good eyes at the plate by Jackie Piccione, Caisey Heyman and Fiona Mullen. Alisa Mastrandrea made the sacrifice ground out, but not before recording two RBIs. Reds responded in the 5th. with Gillian Grillo, Jillian Ortega and Noelle Cook each hitting singles to load the bases. A walk and then to the top of the line-up, Grace Boyle connected, bringing in the runners. By the top of the 5th, score was 10-7, Reds taking the lead. Top of the 6th, Brooke Leahy came in as relief, and delivered two strikeouts to bring the Royals to last licks. With Reds leading 12-8, Jillian Schneider led off with a line drive single. Brooke Leahy continued the rally with a bullet to left field, driving Schneider to 3rd and Leahy recording the double. Mastrandrea kept it alive with a single, and Hagan Carlin hit a ground ball, bringing home a run and advancing the runner to scoring position. Unfortunately, the rally ended there. Royals lost a tough one, 12-9, with the Reds advancing to the Major Girls championship series facing the Orioles. The Royals still had a great season, taking first place in the Major Girls division, with a record of 9-3. DIAMOND DUST: The Staten Island Yankees asked Rockaway Little League to share a new program with you. They are hosting two Baseball Camps for children ages 7-15. They will take place July 15-17 and August 10-12. The camps are from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and include a snack and lunch, a hat, t-shirt, tickets to SI Yankee games and instruction. To get a registration form, contact Maura Buckley at mbuckley@siyanks.com.
