New York’s Strongest Remember Ernie tion worker. A sea of sanitation vehicles flooded Shore Front Parkway as they launched a parade to pass by the Kiburis home on Rockaway Beach Boulevard to pay their respects to Ernie’s family. Kiburis was a sanitation worker for Rockaway’s Q14 garage. Following Ernie’s sudden, tragic loss, DSNY spontaneously organized this parade for his family, including his wife, Laura Arena Kiburis, before his

wake on Thursday. As the vehicles passed by, they honked horns, while a bagpiper played in front of the home. Before the parade came to an end, a DSNY supervisor hugged Laura, saying “anything you need, call us. Ernie was a friend to many within the community and the sudden loss left many in mourning. A GoFundMe was quickly established by Denise Hock of Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue, of which Ernie’s wife, Laura, is a member, and Ernie
Ernie Kiburis could never be replaced but New York’s Strongest did what they could to lift his loved ones up during a difficult time. On Monday, June 29, Ernest Kiburis, known better as Ernie, was killed in a catastrophic car accident just 200 feet from his home near Beach 108th Street. On Thursday, July 2, the NYC Department of Sanitation held a drive-by memorial parade in front of the home of their fellow sanita-
often helped with at events. “To know Ernie was definitely to love him. He was a kind, compassionate and caring man who was always ready to help anyone in need. Ernie will be missed deeply by his brothers at the NYC Dept of Sanitation, Hock wrote on the fundraising page, which raised nearly $11,000 to cover funeral expenses. If you’d like to donate, the fundraiser can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/f/ in-memory-of-ernie-kiburis.

BOYLEING POINTS
Where Is This? Rockaway is a show about nothing. I’ve been guilty of saying summer’s over on the 4th of July (to the extreme annoyance of many) but this year I should have declared it over on Memorial Day. Or the day after the Rockaway St. Patrick’s parade. I feel like I’m in one of those movies where everything’s the same but different, too. Didn’t we have volleyball leagues and Summer Classic basketball once upon a time? The Rockaway Theatre Compa-
ny would have hot-ticket shows in the summer and The Rockaway Artists Alliance would have cool exhibits. Now? The Rockaway Times would be telling everyone to get their pails and shovels ready because the annual Sandcastle Contest was just up ahead. The Family Fun Run at St. Francis de Sales used to be the biggest walk/run event in Rockaway and where’s that to be found? RockStock & Barrels, the surf and skate musical fest, usual-
Page 5
ly kicks off the summer but fun was put on ice. There’d be music at the concessions and people would still be talking about the Irish Festival and getting ready for another boxing exhibition at St. Camillus. The kite festival is another thing that’s been grounded. Have I bummed you out enough? In the old days, your health was endangered because of Rockaway hospitality. Stay for another, this one’s on me. Let’s stop at such and such before we go to this and that. And then there’s the weather. We could’ve used some rain to dampen late night fireworks but of course, June had great weather. And of course, in 2020, you couldn’t swim because lifeguards were not on duty. June had great weather but outdoor dining wasn’t permitted until June 22, after Father’s Day. It was almost enough to make you complain about nice weather. Which usually only people on Facebook complain about. Before you think I’m a stalled thundershower, just know that I am one with a silver lining.
There may be nothing going on in Rockaway but there’s nothing going on anywhere else. You’re not going to be invited to anywhere off the peninsula. It’s another thing that won’t happen this summer, The Rockaway Groan. For those who’ve been quarantined for five or six years, The Rockaway Groan is that utterance we make when we’re invited to some place during the summer months. It doesn’t matter if it’s a barbecue at a Hamptons mansion or a yacht cruise off Nantucket, you will not be happy. You will be stuck in traffic both ways. You will wonder what you’re missing back in Rockaway. You utter The Rockaway Groan: I gotta leave Rockaway for this? And that’s the thing that is so messed up. We’d probably be ok with leaving this summer for a little break, for a little something different but there’s no point. The people who don’t live on the peninsula paradise aren’t even asking. Misery loves company but not this summer.

By Katie McFadden
A new art project by an award-winning artist was planned way before coronavirus even hit the U.S. but with its augmented reality essence, Nancy Baker Cahill’s "Liberty Bell" project was inadvertently made for the times with its virtual viewing capabilities, and its timely message that will have some asking—what does liberty mean? On July 4, "Liberty Bell" made its debut in some of the east coast’s most historic cities, as well as in our own backyard. "Liberty Bell," a public art project utilizing augmented reality (AR), launched last Saturday across Boston, MA, Charleston, SC, Philadelphia, PA, Selma, AL, Washington, DC and—Rockaway. When the Art Production Fund was looking for their next project, they turned to Nancy Baker Cahill, a multidisciplinary artist and the Founder and Creative Director of 4th Wall, a free AR public art platform. As the winner of the “Impact Maker to Watch” award at LA City Hall for her AR projects such as the ongoing Coordinates project and DesertX at popular music festival, Coachella, Cahill was on the Art Production Fund’s radar. Last year, they asked her to create a proposal for a project meant for Philadelphia, and Cahill drew inspiration from Philly’s infamous cracked Liberty Bell. In a polarized election year, Cahill’s work speaks to concerns around the founding principles of American freedom and democracy and topics like inequality, structural racism, injustice and the ability to vote. Loving her idea, the Art Production Fund decided to go bigger, and the project became Cahill’s first multicity installation of an AR public artwork. "Liberty Bell" depicts interwoven, yet constantly moving red, white and blue strands, in some locations forming a vortex-like image of a bell. The piece is accompanied by a soundtrack of bells tolling, starting out rhythmic and harmonious and gradually erupting into a more chaotic tune. In the age of coronavirus and re-
cent protests, "Liberty Bell" took on an even deeper meaning and Cahill hopes the artwork sparks conversations. "From its origins in American history, ‘liberty’ was only available to a certain demographic and came at great expense to others. You can’t have a conversation about freedom and not talk about the history of slavery and inequality in the United States. A bell can be a warning or a celebration; something spiritual or a wordless means of communication. In an age of pandemic, surveillance, injustice and disinformation, who is actually free? That’s the conversation we need to have,” she said. The piece cannot be seen with the naked eye, leaving no environmental footprint. But rather, its impact can be viewed with Cahill’s 4th Wall app at designated locations. Once in one of the geolocated areas, using the app, a user can view Liberty Bell floating above places like the historic Boston Harbor, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and others, with the bell casting a shadow above the scene, as if it were actually there. However, those in Rockaway don’t have to travel far. From above the ocean on Beach 108th Street, or the bay at the Rockaway ferry landing, to Fort Tilden’s Battery Harris East, "Liberty Bell" is ringing around the peninsula. The local access is made possible by partnerships with organizations that share a goal of drawing attention to Rockaway’s beautiful landscapes and unique challenges, while promoting art. Local partners include the 7G Foundation, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC), The Rockaway Hotel, National Parks Service, NYC Parks, New York State Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation and the Rockaway Artists Alliance Continued on page 7
The Rockaway Times
‘LIBERTY BELL’ Continued from Page 6 (RAA). Since its founding in 2013, JBRPC has been an active partner, along with the RAA, in bringing prominent art displays to a Hurricane Sandy-stricken peninsula. This began in 2014 with the first installation of Rockaway! In collaboration with MoMA PS1, this widescale exhibit, including work by famed singer Patti Smith, thrilled locals and visitors alike. This continued in 2016 with Katarina Grosse’s red and white painted building in Fort Tilden and in 2018, with renowned artist Yayoi Kusama’s Narcissus Garden. When looking for the next big thing for 2020, JBRPC turned to the highly anticipated Rockaway Hotel, whose partners, the 7G Foundation, were working with the Art Production Fund. With funding from JBRPC, a decision was made to let Rockaway have a taste of “Liberty.” JBRPC helped identify geolocations surrounding The Rockaway Hotel, including
THURSDAY, JULY 9, 2020 the beach and ferry landing, as well as Rockaway’s own bit of history, Battery Harris East in Fort Tilden. “We wanted a location by the beach to highlight Rockaway’s resilience with its new boardwalk, dunes and restoration efforts after Sandy; over Jamaica Bay to highlight climate change and the issues surrounding marsh restoration; and in Fort Tilden to show how nature has started to reclaim this abandoned military installation,” JBRPC’s Alex Zablocki explained. Shirley Chisolm State Park in Brooklyn serves as a fourth local location. Adding Rockaway provided Cahill with an opportunity to create another drawing, something that would speak more closely to the area—a wave. The wave image can be found at the Beach 108th and Battery Harris locations. “The Rockaways are interesting. As part of this, we wanted to talk about another aspect of liberty, which is climate change, and engage in questions of how climate change related to a location and through the Rockaways, which
were hit hard by Sandy, you start to think about gentrification and resilience, economic disparities and inequalities,” Cahill said. The virtual essence of the Liberty Bell project makes it ideal in a time of social distancing. With its outdoor geolocations that can be viewed on personal smartphones and tablets during any time of the day, "Liberty Bell" gives people the chance to get out, explore outdoor locations and engage in a unique experience that they can share with others through social media. While museums and art galleries remain closed, including the RAA, the project keeps art alive. “JBRPC has always been a great partner and has been generous with including us and helping to continue our mission of bringing internationally and nationally-recognized artists and their work to the Rockaways. We were thrilled to be asked to be a part of this project because it’s virtual and couldn’t have come at a better time with the Covid-19 pandemic,” RAA’s
Page 7 Christine Mullally said. She added that having "Liberty Bell" in Fort Tilden helps to keep focus on the area where the RAA’s studios will hopefully be able to open back up in the fall. With "Liberty Bell" remaining active through July 2021, it could draw lasting attention and spark local conversations about liberty. More community engagement is expected to come into play, including at The Rockaway Hotel, where people will be able to use free WiFi to download the 4th Wall app, or potentially borrow smart devices if they don’t have any, and view "Liberty Bell" from the hotel rooftop. In the meantime, people can explore on their own by downloading the free 4th Wall app, which doesn’t collect data. Head to one of the local locations, break out your smartphone, turn on the sound and use the app to find the artwork. Videos and photos can be shared on social media. For more information on Cahill or the project, follow NancyBakerCahill or 4thWallApp.

***** We can’t blame this on the mayor but sure seems like ever since he said okay to outdoor dining, we’ve had rain every day. ***** Well, it came as a surprise to us. Ludwig’s Catering is sailing into the sunset as Mary Morgan and Jimmy Carr have decided to retire and move on to the next chapter in their lives. Delicious food and service were staples for 25 years. Best of luck to Mary and Jimmy. They will be missed! ***** Claire Conti, wife of retired police officer, Bob Conti, sent out texts and posted a request on Facebook about raising money to fly a Rockaway and Breezy Support the NYPD banner over the beach. Donations came in from all over, including some from the west coast.
Enough money was raised that the banner is expected to fly on weekends throughout the summer. ***** It’s like the Academy Awards. Every time we thank people for helping us, we leave somebody out. Sharon Feldman has been submitting recipes to us forever and we forgot the shout out when we were listing contributors on our sixth anniversary edition. The bright side? Now, she gets a shout out all to herself! ***** The Summer Guide is out at newsstands and some local businesses and we’ll continue to distribute for the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the many kind words you’ve sent our way. ***** Speaking of The Guide, John Roche reviews Diane Cardwell’s new book, Rockaway: Surfing Headlong Into A New Life. And this is a reminder to order a copy today. ***** Originally, the Fire Cadet Academy expected to launch its
The Rockaway Times
online application in the spring of 2020 and then begin testing and other processing over the summer. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fire Cadet Academy is delayed to a future date, not yet determined. ***** Social media was abuzz after we posted a photo by Robbie Ostrander. His drone shot captured the Rockaway shoreline and the ocean water was a Caribbean-like turquoise. Some thought it had to be photoshopped but nope, it wasn’t. People who have been in the water say it’s never been cleaner and it’s just about as warm as the Caribbean, too. ***** Play ball. Basketball, that is. At least you’ll be able to do so in city parks soon. Rims were taken down in March in the effort to flatten the curve. NYC Parks has started reinstalling the 2500 hoops across the city now that the City has entered Phase 3. ***** Speaking of basketball, the 36th Annual Summer Classic at
St. Francis de Sales will happen and Bugsy Goldberg is hard at work pulling it all together. Assuming Phase 4 occurs, the High School Division kicks off play on Monday, July 20; the Open Division on Tuesday, July 21 and the Grammar School Division on Monday, August 3. Stay tuned for more details. ***** Ricky Bellevue, the man seen in an alleged chokehold by a 100th Precinct officer during a boardwalk arrest last month, has been arrested. Bellevue and another man allegedly made anti-gay slurs toward victims before trying to take their bags in the Bronx on Tuesday. Bellevue is accused of cutting the victim in the face and hand during a struggle. He is facing charges of robbery as a hate crime, assault as a hate crime, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, harassment stalking and unlawful possession of marijuana. According to a 2017 Daily News article, Bellevue has more than 35 prior arrests.

ANGELS AND KIDS HELP GET FOOD TO SENIORS On Wednesday, July 2, Father Jim of St. Francis de Sales called to say that a shipment of Fresh Direct boxes arranged by Borough President Sharon Lee was on the way to St. Francis. The Angels were out delivering the Grab and Go meals once again, and this shipment was unexpected. The next generation, the kids at St. Francis parish stepped up to the plate. They dropped what they were doing at a moment’s notice and came to the church to help bring the boxes inside. “We thank them for going above and beyond,” the Angels said in a press release. The next day, under the direction of Jeanette M. Garramone, her Angels team delivered the
boxes to those in need. The Angels included Jeremy Bucuria, Judy Emiliano, Jean Hammel, Maryann Neilen and Barbara Nobel. “God bless Father Jim and Father Bill,” the press release added. The Angels deliver Grab and Go meals to seniors and the disabled, Monday through Friday. The Angels need your assistance to continue to help those who cannot and should not be out shopping during the pandemic. There is a need for soups, cereal, tuna, juice boxes, snacks, milk, rice, paper towels, canned fruit, pasta, soap, vegetables and salt-free and sugar free items. Support the NYPD Message Flies Above Rockaway By Katie McFadden
“Rockaway and Breezy Pt. Support the NYPD.” That was the message that flew high in the sky above Rockaway’s beaches on Sunday, July 5, from a plane banner made possible by a community fundraising effort. When Rockaway resident Claire Conti saw a plane banner fly by on June 21, carrying the message, #PoliceFreeSchools Now!, she was inspired to share a message of her own. That plane was made possible by the Urban Youth Collaborative, a group that includes the Rockaway Youth Task Force, as a way to encourage Mayor de Blasio to remove police from public schools as part of the NYC budget vote. After the plane flew, UYC tweeted, “We want #PoliceFreeSchools Now! NYCMayor the answer is literally all around you now sooo can you stop pretending like it’s not obvious. Think of what else we can do if you don’t give us what we
want. #youthpower.” The message did not go over well for some. “It really was that plane that flew by,” Conti said of her decision to fly a message supporting the NYPD. “We were all upset and all tired of the ways police are being treated all over the country right now, so we wanted to get together and let our police know that we support them, we love them, we need them, we’re thankful for them

and we want them to be able to do their jobs,” Conti said. Conti, the wife of a retired police detective, decided to organize a plane message of her own. After doing research on prices for flying such a message, Conti found that it would cost about $1,200. “I thought, if I can get 50 families to donate $20 each, I could raise $1,000 and come up with the rest myself,” she said. Through word of mouth, mass
group texts and some social media alerts, Conti sent out the call for her effort. However, it wasn’t just 50 families that donated. “It went from 50 families to 700,” she said, with some donating more or less than the suggested $20 donation. And donations came from near and far. “People donated money from upstate New York. I even got money from as far as Seattle,” she said. With more than enough donations, Conti plans to run the plane message every weekend throughout the summer, depending on the weather and company’s schedule. “I think it showed that everyone is sick and tired of this. The media is telling everyone else’s side. All you hear about is what the media shows and defunding the police. It’s a disgrace. Police are getting bottles thrown at them, being screamed at and they’re being treated like garbage, but what would we do without them? It’s time for our Continued on page 13

SUPPORT THE NYPD MESSAGE Continued from Page 12 side to be heard now.” As some beachgoers stood and applauded as the plane went by multiple times on Sunday, it seems the message was heard loud and clear. The message was also shared on social media. The NYPD Cadets posted a photo of the plane to Twitter saying, “Thank you to our friends in the Rockaways and Breezy Point for flying this sky banner in support of the NYPD.” Joe Fox, retired NYPD Chief of Transit, shared a video of the plane on Twitter saying, “Thank you to the person who started this drive and for all of the people who chipped in for this important message. Finally, little by little, people are finding the courage to speak over the noise of the intimidating groupthink.” Fox’s video was “liked” more than 660 times and shared by NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea who said, “Thank you for sharing Joe. New Yorkers all over the five boroughs support
and appreciate the Finest.” However, not everyone appreciated the message. Some beachgoers took to social media to express anger over the message. “This was disgusting. No. Not everyone in Rockaway supports the NYPD! Don’t f**** include me in your conservative white supremacy Rockaway views,” one user wrote on Twitter. Another group called Rockaway Revolution posted, “This divisive banner says very little, but it says a lot. This banner is an extreme measure to point out that some Rockaway folks believe their lives are more valuable than others. We don’t agree. #BlackLivesMatter.” Asked if the message was
anti-Black Lives Matter, Conti said, “This has nothing to do with color at all. This is about police officers and our support for them. It has nothing to do with race and I feel sorry for the people that say that. It’s really sad.” Conti says she was, however, overwhelmed by the amount of support she got for the idea. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of doing this because of such a positive response. The support has just been incredible and I’m so grateful to everybody who donated because they are the ones who made this possible. Rockaway is the best,” she said. Conti is one of several neighbors who have also organized
a march to support the NYPD on Saturday, July 11. The march will take place starting on the Beach 121st Street boardwalk after 11:30 a.m. and will continue along the boardwalk to the 100th Precinct on Beach 94th Street. With some of the donations raised for the plane effort, Conti says they’ll be providing the officers with lunch at the end of the march. “This isn’t a protest,” Conti said. “It’s a friendly walk. We were nervous to do this, but we have to stand up for this. It’s necessary.” All are welcome to attend the march on Saturday. (As Saturday’s forecast calls for a chance of rain, it is not clear if the march will be postponed.)

Beach 133rd Celebrates With Independence Day Parade Tradition continues on Beach 133rd. On Saturday, July 4, the block kicked off the holiday with their annual July 4th Parade. From Rockaway Beach Boulevard to the beach wall, children from the block marched while singing patriotic songs to celebrate Independence Day. At the beach wall, the flag was raised. According to neighbor Laurence Gray, this year the flag was raised “in honor and remem-
brance of our good friend, and neighbor Billy Hanson, who was lost in a tragic accident last October. Besides being a good neighbor and friend he was strong supporter of the Rockaway community and a great family man. Billy was an inspiration to us all and will always be remembered. The annual Beach 133rd July 4th Parade has been an annual tradition for at least nine years. Photos by Laurence Gray.

Pheffer Amato Sponsors Bill Requiring Swim Education in Schools
Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato introduced legislation (A.10256) that would require swimming education in all New York City and State public schools. The legislation comes in light of numerous drownings and aquatic fatalities throughout the state of New York, specifically on the Rockaway Beach coastline, which were highlighted in a recent Article in the New York Times... “Swim safety and education has never been more crucial, Assemblywoman Stacey Phef-
fer Amato said. “The vast majority of drownings and deaths on our beaches could be prevented by instilling swimming safety and aquatic education lessons in our students from a young age. This bill would provide water education for all students at multiple points in their lives, ensuring that they are prepared to swim and understand the real consequences of going into the ocean unprepared. Last summer there were seven confirmed deaths along the Rockaway Beach coastline, in addition to a drowning that occurred before Memorial Day weekend this year. This bill -sponsored in the State Senate by Senator Joseph. P. Addabbo Jr.- would expose all New York State students to water safety – whether they live or swim by a lake, pool, or beach.

The Essence of Surfing By John W. Roberts
(Editor’s Note: This article was originally published in Surfer Magazine in 1977. As surfing has become a year round activity in Rockaway, perhaps this article captures why the sport continues to grow, forty-three years later). Why are surfers attracted to the ocean and its waves? Many surfers will answer that surfing is a part of their existence, like eating, sleeping, working or going to school. Why do surfers dream of the perfect wave? Why is there a search for the ultimate experience, a kind of sexual union with the ocean? Is there some theory dictating an urge for social intercourse with others in experiencing the pleasures of the sea? Could it be that the ocean provides an outlet for our aggressions, a safety valve or catharsis for relieving surplus energy in a socially acceptable manner? Perhaps it is the physiological benefits derived from the development of endurance, both

muscular and cardiorespiratory? Maybe it is just a stimulating form of recreation providing a challenge in trying to compete with and overcome the forces of nature? There are many reasons why an individual is attracted to the sport of surfing. Some of the theories that will be presented could surely lend themselves to the reasoning behind the participation in the sport. The physiological and psychological benefits
experienced from sharing waves or meeting new friends while traveling. Surfing could be a form of leisure and recreation to get away from the boring and hectic pace of the week – day world. The serious surfer may surf for some or all these reasons. In addition to and besides these benefits, a philosophy of why an individual surfs and rides waves can be more than causally related. The individual who looks at surfing existentially would see him-
self as an individual who is at the center of the universe. Existential man would exist as an individual in a purposeless universe and must oppose his hostile environment through the exercise of free will. Each man must determine his own value system and accept responsibility for his actions. Basically, the existentialist would be asking for and seeking answers to such questions as Who am I? What am I? Where am I going? Will surfing help individuals find answers to these questions? Can surfers discover their identity through surfing? What kind of relationship does the surfer develop with the ocean? According to Martin Buber, an existentialist philosopher, man experiences dialogue with other men which develops into what he calls an “I – Thou” relationship. Through this I – Thou relationship of mutuality, the surfer can find meaning in his existence to the ocean. This relationship allows man to find his personal identity. The aloneContinued on page 22

THE ESSENCE OF SURFING Continued from Page 21 ness of surfing helps the individual surfer develop an awareness of his personal identity. The aloneness in surfing helps the individual develop an awareness of his existence. Surfers who surf by and for themselves develop this awareness. Those who discover isolated surf spots, develop an appreciation for the aesthetics and value of surfing for themselves, and find their identity through the sport and art of surfing. In surfing alone in such situations, the surfer distinguishes his sport experience from other everyday experiences. The individual surfer comes to realize his own capabilities and potentials, in that he develops an understanding of himself and his relationship with the ocean. An attitude of appreciation for the aesthetic values he derives from the mutual relationship with the ocean is more fully realized. Comprehending the moods of the ocean helps the surfer develop an understanding of his own moods; the angry moods of the surf during a storm or hurricane, the irritable mood of the ocean on a rainy, windy day, the serenity of a calm sea with the sun rising or setting, or the appreciation that follows as the surf builds up or calms down to perfection overhead waves. Suddenly the surfer begins knowing who he is. He is free to engage in his sport, free from rules and boundaries outside the limits that are imposed on him by the ocean, due to his ability or lack of it, or conditions of nature with its wind or swell direction. The true surfing experience is such that it cannot possibly be described to the non – surfer. Those who have had the experience of the perfect moment might relate to it in intensity with a sexual orgasm. Dropping down the face of an overhead wave, bottom turning at the last instant in defiance of the ocean’s power, then arching across the face of a long green and blue wall only to be completely enveloped by the unfathomable strength of tons of white water. All the time and space seem to be suspended momentarily while the thrilling

moment of victory, shooting out of the end of the tube, or defeat which might result in a vicious wipeout or possibly drowning is experienced with unforeseen anticipation. In the experience of making the wave, the ocean tells the surfer he has been allowed to experience this intimate mutual relationship. It has been a momentary experience that the surfer has found his existence. A wipeout tells the surfer that the ocean has the power to suppress the surfer and his quest for that perfect moment. Why then does the surfer who has been pounded and held down until the brink of exhaustion go back out seeking that perfect moment, or possibly more abuse? Perhaps it is the realization that he has developed an understanding of himself through the mutual relationship with the waves. Every surfer’s dream is to find the perfect wave, which describes for him the perfect moment. Often, the surfer has been asked about his experiences surfing. What is it like? How does it compare with other sports? What was your greatest achievement or your perfect moment? To appreciate the perfect moment, it is necessary that we are made aware of certain characteristics; there appears to be a disorientation in time and space where the surfer temporarily loses perception of all external boundaries. There is an intensive and emotional reaction felt by the rush of adrenalin to the muscles, with the resultant feeling of emotional catharsis and the joyful sensation of having been so close in union with the ocean. The experience can be viewed historically, in that it has occurred in the present, and is free from the past or
·

future. The I – Thou experience is mutually developed. The reason for the great emotional reaction and intensity is due to the spontaneity of the moment. The perfect wave is not always within our grasp, and it is never planned, due to the inconsistency of the ocean and the ability of the surfer. If each wave were a five-foot hollow tubular wall, then the perfect moment would come as a happening to be expected rather than a moment to be experienced, since the moment is not repeatable. Being enveloped in the perfect wave lasts momentarily and is never sustained for any length of time. It may vary in duration, and although it may give the sensation of endlessness, the experience is momentary, and the individual finds himself in its briefness. The advent of professional surfing contests has changed the philosophic dimensions of the sport of surfing. In order to explain this thesis, it is necessary to explain the differences of surfing as a sport in relation to surfing as an athletic contest. The surfer sportsman relies on his physical ability to ride waves. Surfing requires a great deal of physical skill, conditioning and motor ability, including balance and coordination, are essential. Strategy is employed under various conditions, whether it be surfing a reef, point or beach break. Adjustments in form and style are necessary due to wind conditions. Chance plays a part in the sportsman’s role in that surfers continually defy the ocean by taking off later and riding closer to the curl. The result for the sportsman is that of “personal gratification,” or self – satisfaction for the individual.
The Rockaway Times Athletic surfing contests have taken away the existential essence of the surfer. Athletics likes sports involves physical skill, strategy and chance. Within contests, there are now rules and boundaries imposed on the surfer in the form of persons judging the capabilities of individual surfers. As the surfer begins to follow the contest circuit, he loses the meaning of surfing as a sport and art form. The contest surfer loses his authenticity since he now subjugates himself to imposed rules, boundaries and judges. The result is no longer personal gratification, but “victory.” The athlete surfer becomes concerned with the prize money or materialistic rewards, no matter how large or small. In his quest for victory, he strives to influence the spectators for their pleasure and support, hoping they will influence the judges. This point is obvious to anyone who has participated or spectated at any of the big contests. In contests, the surfer tends to lose his individuality, and certainly they do not help him develop the I – Thou mutual relation with the ocean that the surfer sportsman is able to achieve. Perhaps it is necessary to participate in such athletic contests in order to gain insight and appreciation of surfing as a sport. Once the awareness is realized, maybe then the surfer will find his individual identity through surfing. As the surfer develops this existential awareness of his being, only then will he discover his identity through the mutual I – Thou relationship with the ocean. References: Coutts, C. Less Might Be More My philosophy on prescribing medication has always been that less is better. I always prefer to see patients treat themselves. For example, when I see someone who is overweight and who develops mild diabetes or hypertension, my preference is always to try to get him or her to lose weight rather than start on medication. One of the reasons for my approach to this is that medications can have side effects. Unfortunately, however, urging someone to lose weight or alter their diet or behavior often does not work because of human nature. Recently, a study was published that looked at the
effects of deprescribing (i.e. stopping) medications in older (>80) individuals. High blood pressure is the leading modifiable risk factor for heart disease and the most common condition in older people with multimorbidity (multiple diseases). Antihypertensive medication prevents strokes and heart disease in older, high-risk patients, and about half of people 80 and over are on these medications. But some observational studies have shown that lower blood pressure and multiple antihypertensive medications may be harmful in some old-

er patients with polypharmacy (multiple meds) and multimorbidity. Guidelines recommend using clinical judgement when prescribing medications in frail, older patients and they emphasize a personalized approach that might include attempts to improve quality of life by deprescribing, however the guidelines are based largely on expert opinion and are vague. There have been few studies published that looked at the safety and efficacy of antihypertensive medication reduction in routine clinical practice, which is why this new study is groundbreaking. This study, done in the UK, aimed to establish whether partial medication reduction is possible without clinically significant changes in blood pressure control, quality of life, adverse events, serious adverse events, and a change in systolic and diastolic blood pressure over a 12week period. Participants in the trial were aged 80 and over, on two or more antihypertensive agents, and had multiple morbidities. Unlike previous studies that were observational, this
The Rockaway Times study was a randomized controlled trial with a control group. What it demonstrated was that deprescribing antihypertensive medications did not cause any significant adverse events as compared to the control group, although the study group did see a small rise in systolic blood pressure. Proponents of deprescribing suggest potential benefits could be an improved quality of life, reduced adverse effects, and a reversal of cognitive decline (age-related dementia). Quality of life improvements and reversal of cognitive decline could not be measured in this study because it was too short (12 weeks). But it does plant a seed to justify a longer study which might measure these factors. On a final note, patients should never adjust the dosage of their medications or discontinue medications on their own. This should always be done under the supervision of a clinician. However, this study may lend credence to the old adage “less is more. Please direct questions and comments to editor@rockawaytimes.com

Beach Etiquette I am sorry that this column is coming late this season. I was on the beach this weekend and saw so many offenders, so here is the annual column with a 2020 slice. Rule 1: When you get to the beach and there is a lot of space, please do not sit directly on top of people already at the beach. I never understand why someone who has never seen me or met me before wants to
sit so close to me. Don’t you want your own space as well? 1b: This also goes to setting up a huge crew directly in front of someone. Many times, the residents know that the tide will be coming in as the day goes on, and you sitting directly in front of them is both blocking their view and now creates a problem when you have to move when the tide comes up the beach.
Rule 2: I love music. Our group often has a radio on the beach. However, when your music is so loud that the entire beach cannot even hear their conversation, that is rude. 2b: This noise rule also applies to vulgar language. Rockaway is a family-oriented beach, so please respect families with children that are surrounding you. And if you want to listen to the rude and vulgar language when you are alone, use headphones. A lone young man this weekend set his large radio directly in front of a large group of children playing volleyball and the lyrics were awful. Rule 3: Clean up after yourself. This was said in Robert Fulghum’s book All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. One of his things he listed 25 years ago was: clean up your own mess. This is not beach etiquette; it is etiquette in general. I understand that we do not have enough garbage cans, but make an effort to at least place your trash in a bag and bring it to the
The Rockaway Times closest can. I heard a great conversation yesterday from a friend, “The beach cleanup was tough Saturday! PS: If you ask the “parkies, they will give you garbage bags! Rule 4: Dress appropriately. I saw a few people wearing what they thought were clothes on the beach this weekend. There is no reason to be strolling the beach topless. This is not customary in our country. And wear bathing suits, not underwear. I have said it before and I will say it again: they are not expensive at Target! Also, please do not change right on the beach, find a restroom. Please understand that I am not against non-residents of Rockaway enjoying our beaches. I just think that if they knew the rules, it would be a bit better. I have a few more rules and they will be out next week. Have a great week everyone. Of course, if I missed a rule let me know so I can include in next week’s column: email me at MrsHanning308@gmail.com. Part II coming next week.

It’s not breaking news that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have recommended that, in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, we wear masks in public when social distancing is not possible. According to the CDC, the virus spreads “mainly from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice.‌ These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.â€? So if I wear a mask and I’m infected, even if I don’t know I’m infected, I won’t be subjecting another person to the potentially deadly virus. According to a new study published in June in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the best way to prevent
Page 27
Wear a Mask Even If You Don’t Want To virus transmission is by wearing a mask. Researchers studied infection rate trends in Italy and New York before and after masks became mandatory. The study found that wearing masks prevented more than 78,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than 66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9. A growing number of states are mandating the use of masks. NY requires masks when social distancing is not possible, and NY businesses can refuse entry to people who aren’t wearing masks. In view of the public health benefits of mask requirements, there is legal basis for making masks mandatory. According to the Health Law and Policy Program at American University, state and local governments have broad authority in a public health emergency to issue emergency orders like mask mandates.
LASZLO KOVACS ALL TYPES OF DEPARTMENT OF BUILDINGS SERVICES
However, in spite of the science and legality, some people are refusing to wear masks on the grounds that their “private rights and civil liberties are being infringed by the requirement. Lawsuits are emerging, even in states like Florida where the number of COVID-19 cases is rising, that challenge a range of mask-related issues, from the process used to adopt the mandates to whether the mandates themselves violate free speech rights. Anti-mask sentiment has become so prevalent in some parts of the country that fraudsters have gotten into the act. Postings for laminated “mask exemption cards with a fake U.S. Department of Justice seal claiming that the bearer is exempt from mask usage have been found for sale online. Last month the Department of Justice issued a statement that these postings are fraudulent.
It is indeed challenging to wear a mask in the summer heat, but people need to get over themselves. This shouldn’t be a political issue. The science is clear. Mask-wearing is helping to reduce virus spread significantly. Anti-maskers are focusing on the wrong thing. I’m all for civil liberties and personal choice, but as smoke-free air laws (enacted in the majority of states to protect the public from breathing secondhand smoke) illustrate, your freedom is not absolute if exercising it will result in harm to others. Spreading the virus when you are infected and don’t know is NOT a personal choice. Nor is freaking out an elderly person walking down the street who becomes frightened when he/she sees somebody approaching without a mask. Respect others’ rights in addition to your own.

Cook
spinach and onion over medium heat until just wilted. Remove from skillet and set aside. Combine flour, salt and pepper. Dredge chicken in flour. Melt butter in skillet. Add chicken. Cook 5 minutes per side, just until golden brown. Remove chicken to heated dish. Add broth, wine, lemon juice and garlic. Deglaze pan and cook sauce about 2 minutes, until reduced by half. WrestleTalk WWE VS AEW WHO IS BETTER? By Eric Jayden
This is a question I receive on a daily basis: Which is the better company, WWE or AEW? Let's take a look at both products. Both the WWE and AEW are currently operating in Florida and both have televised shows on a national and international level. World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has been in operation longer than AEW with three TV shows, their own WWE Network, which produces WWE owned content, on top of having a wrestling library of different companies, which the WWE owns. The WWE also has a huge operating budget with multiple talent traveling around the world. They also have their own performance center where aspiring wrestlers can get tryouts and if they are signed, they are trained and developed for the WWE product. The WWE maintains a staff of creative writers that help develop storylines for the talent. Speak-
ing in general, the WWE appears to be a Powerhouse Company of Sports Entertainment. But is their product better? All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has been in operation for over a year and is currently based out of Jacksonville, Fl. The company was started by Tony Khan (CEO), Matt Jackson (EVP), Nick Jackson (EVP), Cody Rhodes (EVP) and Kenny Omega (EVP), who are also the company's inaugural Talent. AEW currently has two shows. One is nationally/ internationally televised and the other is televised on YouTube. Being a relatively brand-new company, AEW right now is competing directly with the WWE for viewership. The majority of their talent roster consists of young and veteran wrestlers that have experience performing throughout the world. AEW does concentrate on having very different and interesting storylines in an attempt to offer something different to the wrestling fans. So the question still remains:
Which is better, WWE or AEW? In my opinion, AEW currently has the better product because being a brand-new company, they can learn from the mistakes of the WWE and learn not to repeat them. So far they’re running equally against the WWE with viewership on a weekly basis. One of the failures I see AEW capitalizing on is the proper use of their talent. WWE, in the past, has shown that they have failed to use their talent properly, which has cost them many missed opportunities. If AEW remains committed in promoting their talent to the best of their abilities, then we will continue to see AEW grow and maybe surpass the WWE. Time will tell.... The question of the week comes from Robert C. in Neponsit, who asked "Why isn't the WWE using Shana Blazer properly? I feel she is one of the top female stars in the WWE." This is an excellent question and the truth is the WWE has not been using Shana Blazer properly. The
fact that most recently, Vincent McMahon the CEO of the WWE, has stopped her storyline from further developing is an example of the WWE consistently not properly using their talent. I enjoy seeing Shana Blazer perform. She brings something different and with her MMA background she looks like a legit fighter. If you ask me, Shana Blazer should be WWE Women's Champion, leading the company. In next week's column, we will discuss Regional Promotions that once controlled the wrestling world and gave fans and wrestlers many options before disappearing completely. Since the pandemic has changed the landscape of professional wrestling, maybe it's time to see the rebirth of these promotions once again. Keep sending those questions into eavil183@yahoo.com you can follow me on Facebook @ ericjayden and on Twitter @ followthebadguy. Have a Great Week!
