Beach 117th Street on Sunday and show off your sand-sculpting skills! Although it’s called a sandcastle contest, participants are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. Whether you want to create a castle, a mermaid, a lion, or even a functional sand game (yes, we’ve had those in past years), it’s up to you. All ages and all levels are welcome. Street. The contest starts at 12 noon, so don’t be late! Latecomers will be able to join in until 12:30 p.m., but all participants only have until 2 p.m. to finish their creations. Judges will go around to judge each piece on different criteria like creativity, composition and wow factor! Winners are expected to be announced between 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. There will be three different age categories to compete in: 8

and under, 9 to 15, and 16 and up, (that means you, adults!). Participants can register as an individual or as a group, but groups should be no more than five people. If a group contains participants that can fit into two age categories, it is up to the group to decide which age category they want to compete in upon registering. After registering, participants will receive a colored fish tag, indicating their group number and age category. Once they receive their tag, participants can choose any open plot in the roped-off contest area to make their creation. The top three winners in each category will get a first, second or third place trophy. Plus, thanks to several local businesses, we have some pretty awesome prizes this year. Fish Finders

The Rockaway Sandcastle Contest was a longtime Rockaway tradition started by West End Realty many years ago. They ran it for about 18 years until the organizers moved out of town. The Rockaway Times picked up the shovel and started it up again in 2016. As we go to press, the forecast calls for a sunny 83-degree day, so make sure to bring hats, sunscreen and even umbrellas, or feel free to take a dip in the ocean when filling up your water buckets! It is also recommended to have bug spray on hand in case the wind brings in flies. Whether participating or not, all are encouraged to stop by and check out the amazing creations and cheer on the participants. Last year, we had a sleeping lion, a tribute to Playland, a message to Save the Turtles, a whole town with a bakery and much more! We’re sure those talented sand artists out there will impress once again! That Lime Was a Lemon By Katie McFadden

Neighbors were startled on Wednesday night, July 24, when they heard an explosion so loud, some thought it was thunder or even a shotgun. What they found, surprised them even more as an electric Lime bike was laying in the street, with flames coming out of it. Someone was riding the bike at the time when it allegedly exploded. According to witnesses who spoke with the rider, he told them that he rang the bike’s bell to alert a pedestrian that he was trying to pass, and as he passed, the bike’s battery exploded. The rider of the bike suffered from minor burns to his leg but was okay. The FDNY, NYPD and an ambulance responded to the scene. FDNY quickly extinguished the bike fire. The Rockaway Times obtained a video of the bike on fire by neighbor, Marian Tinnelly, and posted it to various social media pages. The posting exploded, particularly on Twitter, and a

Lime spokesperson responded, saying, “After an initial investigation, this appears to be an isolated incident, and we continue to work with local authorities to assist however possible. We are reaching out to the rider and are thankful the injuries were minor.” By the next day, Lime had completed its investigation and found that more was at play. According to Lime, the bike had been tampered with. “After our investigation we've concluded that this is an isolated incident, in which someone attempted to forcibly break the bike lock with a sharp object, penetrating the well-protected small lithium battery that powers the lock. This sharp object ultimately ignited the battery—similar to what would happen if one used a sharp object to penetrate a phone or laptop battery,” Lime said. They added that customers shouldn’t worry about using the bikes, as long as they’re used properly. “Lithium batteries are

safe and those in Lime bikes that power the motor and the lock are surrounded by protective layers of metal and plastic for added security. Our bikes are entirely safe when used properly, and

we remind riders to respect the vehicles and that vandalism is dangerous and illegal.” Lime said they’ve never seen this anywhere else in the world. However, the company, which also makes electric scooters, has recalled some of its scooters due to fire concerns. In late October 2018, the company announced that it recalled some of its scooters due to a potential issue with some batteries that could smolder or catch on fire due to a manufacturing defect. This issue was found within its scooters manufactured by Segway Ninebot. This only impacted about 0.01% of Lime’s total fleet and no riders were impacted. Last week’s fire incident comes just after DOT announced that Lime’s current pilot program in Rockaway will be coming to an end at the end of the summer. However, they haven’t made a decision to permanently remove bikes from Rockaway. They will provide more information at the end of the summer.

Annie was an inspiration to many and leaves a quite a legacy. ***** St. John’s Hospital is running a Back-to-School Wellness Fair featuring health screenings, health education, and fun activities. Typically, more than 700 community members attend this event yearly. One thousand backpacks filled with school supplies will be given to children in attendance. It’ll be held on Brookhaven Avenue, between Beach 19th Street and Beach 20th Street (in front of St. John’s). ***** A 67-year-old construction worker, Jose Martins of New Jersey, was killed on Tuesday when a wall collapsed at a building under construction at Beach 67th Street at The Tides at Arverne By The Sea. The cause is under investigation.

***** A Lime Bike seemed to explode into flames last week and the video made quite the rounds on social media and on news sites. TEEN DIES IN 4TH DROWNING THIS SUMMER

Another person has died after drowning in Rockaway. This time, a teenage boy. This is the fourth drowning this summer that took place after lifeguards left for the day. At around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, first responders were called to Beach 59th Street as two teen boys were drowning. According to WCBS 880, as the boys were swept out in a riptide past the jetty, Firefighter Brian Levings of Engine 265 and Firefighter James Hayden of Ladder 121 rushed in and were able to rescue a 14-year-old boy. The boy was transported to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where he was in stable condition. They then continued to search for the second victim, an 18-year-old boy who disappeared beneath the surface. They were joined by other rescue crews including divers, helicopters, police, firefighters and others. They searched as the sky

quickly grew darker, but after several hours, search operations ended, and it became a recovery mission. At around 3:30 a.m., the body of John Munoz was found not too far from the jetty where he was last seen alive. According to the New York Post, both boys were friends from Brooklyn. This is the fourth drowning death this summer. On the evening of June 17, a 25-yearold woman and a 26-year-old man were rescued from the waters of Riis Park and were transported to St. John’s Hospital. The woman later died. Just three weeks ago, on the night of July 9, an Inwood couple drowned on Beach 9th Street. All four drownings occurred when lifeguards were off duty, sending a reminder that it’s important to enter the water only when lifeguards are present. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Annie McMahon Left Her Mark By Katie McFadden

Annie McMahon was a young woman who had a short time on earth but lived fully. Despite living with Cystic Fibrosis, she also lived each day with hope, joy, love and courage. On Thursday, July 25, Annie passed away. She was 22. Annie McMahon lived in Crestwood, NY. She graduated from Annunciation Elementary School in 2011, and The Ursuline School in 2015, both not far from her home. However, she spent many summers living in Breezy Point and considered it a second home. After all, the Breezy Point and Rockaway communities did what they do best and rallied around a neighbor in need when they learned that a three-year-old girl was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that impacts the lungs and digestive system. In winter 2000, John McMahon, Annie’s father, and a few others, dared Jim Mullen, a bartender at the Tap & Grill to jump in the ocean. As people started giving him money to take the plunge, an

idea grew. The money would be donated to Cystic Fibrosis charities. "Take the Plunge for Cystic Fibrosis” grew into an annual event where hundreds took a dip in the chilly waters, around Annie’s birthday in February, on the beaches of Rockaway and later the bay off of Breezy Point. That first bet led to an event that would raise as much as $100,000 annually. Each year, Annie and her family would donate that money to charities like Help Hope Live, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the New York Transplant Fund to help not only Annie, but others going through the same battle. However, for the plunge right after Hurricane Sandy, Annie decided to give back to the community that showed her support over the years, by donating the money to local organizations that were helping with the poststorm recovery. Annie’s lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis left her with severe respiratory issues. On October 23, 2016, she was given hope when she received a double lung trans-

plant. The recovery was difficult and by July 2017, her body began to reject the transplant. However, on November 2, 2017, Annie got a third chance at life when she received another double lung transplant. Annie went through a period where she got to enjoy a new lease on life. Being able to breathe better, she traveled to Ireland for a family wedding and to Disney World with friends, she sang, she danced, and she became a strong advocate for her fellow “cysters,” other girls going through this difficult disease. Annie got to live again. A few weeks after Annie stood before the crowd and spoke about her accomplishments at the 19th annual plunge in Breezy Point on February 2, things took a turn for the worse. In the spring, her body began to reject the second transplant. The McMahons looked into the rare option of a third transplant, but as Annie grew sicker, the chances of that happening became more and more slim. Annie never gave up hope through her courageous battle with CF. She lived a full life and faced challenges head on, with a brave smile that was contagious among those around her. Over the past few months, due to the support of Annie’s Army, her friends and family and all of those who believed in her, Annie received uplifting messages from

dozens of celebrities, including one of her idols, Taylor Swift, who spent nearly 20 minutes talking to Annie in a phone call in June. “It meant the world to me,” Annie said in a social media post after the call. On July 5, Annie even paid a visit to Breezy Point, spending a day on the beach with family and friends. “Breezy Point and the beach have always been home to me,” she said in an Instagram post. “This has been a big goal of mine since things took a turn a few weeks ago. I am so blessed to be able to come back.” On Tuesday, July 25, Annie’s battle came to an end. Annie McMahon died at age 22. She is finally able to breathe. She is at peace. Annie is survived by her mother and father, Theresa and John McMahon, her sisters, Kate, Meagan and Claire, her maternal grandmother, Ann Morrissey, her paternal grandmother, Ursula McMahon and her aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who all loved her dearly. On Sunday, July 28, many gathered to pay their respects at the Fred H. McGrath and Son Funeral Home in Bronxville. A Mass was held at the Church of Annunciation in Crestwood on Monday, July 29. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Annie’s memory to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Annie, you certainly left your mark.

Katz Declared Winner of Queens DA Primary, But Is The Race Over? By Kami-Leigh Agard

This past Monday, July 29, after a bitter 34-day Democratic primary election battle for Queens District Attorney, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz was declared the winner with a slim margin of 60 votes over her opponent, Tiffany Cabán. However, Cabán is not taking a defeat sitting down, and on Wednesday, July 31, both camps were in court disputing over whether 114 affidavit votes were from registered Democrats, who failed to mark their affiliation. This is the cliff hanger that Cabán hopes will usher in her victory. In a press release on Monday, Katz declared: “This is a great day for the people of Queens, who have waited patiently for the long recount process to conclude. Today, the Board of Elections (BOE) certified that we have won the campaign for the Democratic primary for Queens D.A. I am grate-

ful to the Board, and particularly to the dozens of BOE employees who undertook the painstaking work of evaluating each of the over 90,000 votes cast in the primary. I am especially grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who supported our campaign throughout this process.” However, Cabán’s attorney disputed Katz's victory with the following statement: “Our campaign is seeking to restore affidavit ballots and Cabán votes that were wrongly invalidated by the BOE. The BOE and the Katz campaign are standing together to oppose our efforts to open and count ballots cast by eligible voters. If all valid ballots cast eligible and registered voters, as they should be under the law, then Tiffany Cabán will ultimately emerge as the Democratic nominee for D.A.” After the first day of court, NBC’s Andrew Siff commented on Twitter: “#Katz lawyer, highly animat-

ed in court. Mocking the #Cabán case. They watched 90,540 votes! Counted by hand! They objected to 30. Where’s the story on that? BOE says judge should end the ballot challenge case and end the election. The board is at a loss as to what petitioner Cabán is complaining about.” According to a July 30 article by City & State NY, “it all comes down to how narrowly the courts will validate affidavit ballots. About 2,800 affidavit ballots were cast in the election. The DOE deemed about 2,300 of these to be invalid. To win, Cabán needs the courts to reinstate at least 61 out of the 114 dispute affidavits—assuming the vote was cast for her, which is still unknown—to make up her current deficit." After a heated hearing in Queens Supreme Court between both candidate’s attorneys on July 31, the challenge will continue. On Tuesday, August 6, Judge John Ingram will review 28 of the

114 affidavit ballots that weren’t counted because voters did not mark their political party. “The Cabán camp is doing everything they can to turn the electoral process upside down to change the results of the primary,” Katz advisor Matthew Rey said. However, Katz is resolute that she is the winner. In her statement of victory, she said, “While it is everyone’s right to avail themselves of the judicial process, I urge all participants in this hardfought election to come together and join me in beginning the hard work of reforming the criminal justice system in Queens. This is a major moment for this borough, and it will take the support of all its residents to make this effort a success. August is National Eye Examination Month HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR EYES By Kami-Leigh Agard

There’s a saying that the eyes are the window to your soul, and regardless of your age, if you don’t regularly get your peepers tested, that window could get blurry, and if even worse, completely opaque. Since August marks National Eye Exam Month, The Rockaway Times seized the opportunity to speak to local optometrist, Joanna Komar O.D., of Zwerling Ophthalmology to educate readers about the critical importance of regular comprehensive eye exams, which can reveal dire undiagnosed health issues that can literally make you blind. According to the National Eye Institute, in the U.S alone, 61 million adults are at risk for vision loss, and only half of those adults visited an eye doctor in the past 12 months.

Also another astounding statistic is that only 48% of parents with children under 12 have never taken their child to an eye care professional. Komar emphasized that the recommended age for a first eye exam is six months. “Surprisingly, the correlation is that kids should get tested

as early as six months. Now obviously this is not checking for a prescription, because it would be impossible to test a six-month-old with a standard eye exam. However, it is critical to test for eye cancers such as retinoblastoma (an eye cancer, which most commonly affects young children).

We test this by doing a dilated eye exam by putting some drops in and checking the retina. Also at that age, you want to check your children for eye turns (otherwise known as “lazy eye”). Then as your child gets to about kindergarten age, you can start getting regular eye exams to check for vision. Until the age of eight, our eyes are still developing. So, there are eye conditions that have to be diagnosed before that age in order to correct vision,” Komar said. Another condition that Komar emphasized that everyone should routinely get tested for is glaucoma, an eye disease that causes damage to the eye's optic nerve and gets worse over time. ness results. “Glaucoma has no symptoms for the majority of the disease, until it’s basically too late. That’s because it’s caused by sensitivity to pressure in the eyeball and has no noticeable symptoms until it’s in an advanced stage. Many patients report no pain, eye redness, nor blurry vision. In many cases, a loss of peripheral vision is so gradual, it goes unnoticed. That’s why it is important to get tested for it regularly. Of course, the probability for us to get it increases when we get older, but there are people who get glaucoma early on. I had a patient who was 18 years old that developed glaucoma, and if not for the fact that she came in for a routine test, she would not have known and ultimately would have lost a significant amount of her vision. This is why early detection is critical in diagnosing glaucoma and other asymptomatic eye dis-

eases,” Komar shared. Komar also revealed a surprising fact—everyone, as they age, will develop cataracts. “Cataracts are something that everyone gets as they age. Just like we get gray hair and wrinkles, we develop cataracts as we get older. It’s just a question of when, and it is absolutely correctable, especially if caught early. Unlike glaucoma, most people notice when they are developing cataract symptoms such as blurry or cloudy vision." As for if constant staring at smartphones or computer screens causes vision loss, Komar said rarely, but constant focusing on a screen or even reading does cause some eye irritation. “When our eyes are focusing on something up close, not just our phones and computer, but even reading a book, what happens is the eye blinks less. We recommend taking breaks from the screen to relax the eyes and to use lubricating drops because what happens is when we don’t blink normally, our

eyes become dry and scratchy. It’s not a lasting damage per say. Now with kids, there is some evidence that prolonged staring at a screen can cause increase in their near-sighted eye prescription, but the differences are usually very minor,” Komar said. As for how often people should get eyes tested, Komar said the rule of thumb is yearly, but there are exceptions. “In general, regardless of their age, we recommend that people get their eyes checked yearly. If one is generally healthy, and they skip a year, it’s ok. However, when it comes to older people, we definitely advise once a year, and even every six months, if for example, we are monitoring cataracts or mild macular degeneration, (an eye disorder that slowly destroys sharp, central vision, which makes it difficult to see fine details and read). Now with kids, even those who are generally healthy, because their eyes are still developing, their prescription may drastically change because they are

still growing, So, they should definitely be checked yearly because any vision problems could affect their performance at school and overall quality of life,” Komar said. As for why people should recognize National Eye Examination Month and schedule an exam, Komar was adamant that time waits for no one. “The most important thing to remember is that you cannot go back in time. For example, with serious conditions such as glaucoma, there are many people who wish they had their eyes tested in the past when it was still treatable. Many patients come in, not knowing they had it, and it was too late. So it’s critical to make sure to get your eyes tested regularly. An exam could put your mind at rest, just like when you go for your yearly primary care physical. It’s always important to get your health checked,” Komar said. Board Members Inducted, Parking Addressed by 100th PCT The latest 100th Precinct Community Council meeting on July 24 was a celebratory affair with the installation of three new executive board members. Plus with summer parking issues being a hot-button topic of discussion, attendance was high. The meeting began with the induction of three 100th Precinct Community Council executive board members by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato. Those sworn include Kathy Heavey as President, Andy McGee as Vice President and Jean Daouphars as Corresponding Secretary. Following the swearing-in ceremony, a few speakers pro-

vided updates to the crown. Aishling Walsh, a victims advocate from Safe Horizon who works with the 100th Precinct, spoke about victim services offered to the community. Next up were Community Affairs Officer PO Hylton of Transit District 23 Neighborhod Community Officers (NCOs), PO Milien and PO Cadet, who introduced themselves and informed the

room about transit safety. Commanding Officer Captain Louron Hall then provided some precinct updates and took questions. He first spoke about an uptick in crime. Over a 28-day period, the 100th Precinct saw a 45% increase in crime. Robberies increased from three to seven. Felony assaults increased from 11 to 18. Grand Larceny increased from 13 to 16. Of 18

assaults, arrests were made in nine of them. Eight of those were domestic violence-related. Other assaults included recent slashings on the beach, typically occurring around 11 p.m. As a result, the precinct has moved some officers off of the dayshift to cover the late-night hours. These officers will patrol the boardwalk and beach to ensure people are not in these areas when the beach and boardwalk are closed. Hall also spoke of an incident in which shots were fired over the heat wave weekend. No one was hit, but shell cases were found. As a result, the anti-crime officers are being changed and the new officers will be in unmarked vehicles, patrolling until 6 a.m. Expanding on the grand larcenies, Hall explained that most included property stolen from cars that were left unlocked, and people that leave property like credit Continued on page 16

cards alone on the sand while at the beach. Then came the hot-button issue of beach parking. Hall explained that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s received multiple complaints about illegal parking, especially on weekends. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The rules are the rules. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no parking on Shore Front Parkway, no parking on Rockaway Freeway, and officers are out there conducting enforcement in these locations. All of your complaints are being heard and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re following up,â&#x20AC;? he said. He explained that there has been a major increase in tickets as compared to last summer. From Memorial Day until now, there has been a 386% increase in summonses for parking violations. There have been 510 summons given out so far compared to 105 last year, just on Shore Front Parkway. Those summonses just include ones issued by officers from the precinct, and not traffic agents. Despite tickets being given out, Hall explained that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t exactly serve as a deterrent. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are

He also added that tow trucks have been out towing cars, but with only three available tow trucks, and having to remove and transport vehicles, the process can sometimes take a while. So far, 63 vehicles have been towed since June 29. Another issue that was brought up is a parking lot being used on weekends to charge people to park on weekends, located between Rockaway Freeway and Rockaway Beach Boulevard on Beach 87th Street. Some neighbors are concerned that this lot is being used illegally, and that it is causing traffic

backups and safety issues. The officers explained that they are looking into the legality of this parking lot and will follow up with the appropriate actions. Another resident brought up issues of credit card skimming. The officers said that they do check bank ATMs for skimmers, but have not checked individual stores and advised the crowd to avoid credit card machines that look suspicious. PO Haber ended the meeting with a reminder that she is available to do etching of the community's bikes and vehicles in order to increase the ability to recover in the case of theft. We can rise above the falls, the unhappy happenings, the shocks and surprises that throw us for a loop, just by accepting that this is life: at times happy, perfect, healthy, peaceful, loving, joyous, balanced, definite, and at times the op-

posites. No two waves are alike. So even the experienced surfer could be wiped out or fall at any time. That doesn’t mean that she/he is not good enough; it could just mean that at that moment, the wave and the surfer are not in sync. Just like when we try and try at something, and it just isn’t happening yet, that doesn’t mean that we are not good enough. We are enough as we are at this moment in time. By accepting that, we come into a positive frame of mind and heart and we leave space to reach what we want to, or improve on something, or whatever it is. There are rides and there are falls. Just like in life. Sometimes we’re riding “high on life” and then something could happen to plunge our hearts to our stomachs. But with time and process, we will ride another wave. When we can “feel safe in the immense ocean of being” (above quote), when we can be secure in ourselves and in our places in the world and

Page 25 the universe, believing in our lives as purposeful and meaningful, we can eventually rise above whatever, like getting back up to meet the next wave. Perhaps it would help to think about inner energy. We have these energy centers in the spine, called, “chakras,” which move vital energy throughout the body. One of them located from the navel to the solar plexus, called, “manipura” is the chakra for personal power, will and self-esteem. The element associated with this chakra is fire and the color yellow. When we engage the muscles in that space, our spines lift and we stand tall. We can. We are the source of our own power and strength. Let us trust ourselves, be confident and know and feel that we are worthy of this life with all its chaos, uncertainty and with all its peace and sureness. May you be happy. May you be free. May you be grateful. May you let go of things that do not serve you. May you have inner peace.

In an increasingly sedentary society, people have become insular and along with that, a wide variety of ills have befallen society. Obesity, diabetes, memory loss and a host of other maladies are the gift to those who simply don’t get out and do things. It’s been a proven fact that people who are active are, as a rule, healthier, happier and even live longer. Their minds aren’t molding and their interest level for life pushes them to move forward. Surveys have been taken by a variety of organizations that back up this theory. Most of them are funded by interested travel organizations and, as a result, have a degree of skepticism about the results. Here’s a new take on that. Road Scholar, a non-profit organization that aims at people

in their mid-50s and up, has conducted an online national survey of more than 1,000 men and women 55 and older. The finding was an overwhelming 85% felt that travel actually helped extend life. Of that number, 74% said that travel was very important in maintaining mental acuity. When this age group was active in their school years, physical education was an important part of the curriculum. As education became more and more complicated, some subjects were cut to make room for more “modern” educational activities. PT went. So did geography. Writing in script was no longer necessary. Why do all that, when a computer was always at hand. If not a computer, watch the younger generation with thumbs whisking across the keyboard of a smart phone.

In all probability, in the not too distant future, thumbs will have evolved to two or three times the size they are today. Things like that happen. The body has an appendix but it serves no useful purpose except to help a surgeon pay for his travel expenses. Roads Scholar says that: “The concept of learning as an age-based activity for children and young adults is being replaced by a philosophy of the benefits of lifelong learning— an approach to education that is not just school-based, but experiential, social and intellectual and continuing throughout the course of a person’s life. For many, travel is an ideal way to continue learning new things no matter the age.” The non-profit noted: “Perhaps the best reason to see the world came from a 90-year-old traveler, Irma Cohen. She said

that by her own calculations, she’ll have to live six more years to amortize the cost of her driver’s license, passport and Global Entry card. She’s now planning her next trip.” Many cruise lines today cater to the 50+ crowd. They’ve found this age group to be active, interested in seeing new things and traveling to new places. Get on board the ship at its home port and spend days visiting new societies, meeting new people and exciting cultures. In the words of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain): “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness.” That quote is used at the end of every TV show featuring Joseph Rosendo, who is a prime example of travel shaping the mind and by extension, health. So get off your duff and get out there.

Health care has emerged as a major campaign topic for Democratic presidential hopefuls this year. Some of them are advancing the concept of “Medicare-for-all” and other free stuff. The theme of today’s column is financial, not political. While I haven’t heard them propose how to pay for it, I would like to delve into how Medicarefor-all might affect the delivery of health care, especially as it pertains to hospitals. Hospitals consume the largest share of healthcare costs, accounting for 35 percent of expenditures in 2017 and amounting to $3.5 trillion that year. Hospitals currently receive payments from both public and private health insurers through several different payment mechanisms. The largest publicly funded insurance plans, Medicare and Medicaid, pay hospitals via unilaterally set fee

schedules. Hospital payment is based on the patient’s diagnosis and that diagnosis-related amount is set by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, which oversees both plans. Since the payment amount is both pre-set and fixed, it behooves hospitals to function efficiently and discharge patients as soon as possible. Current estimates place the payment amounts compared to expense amounts of the 5,262 community hospitals in this country at slightly more than 85 percent for Medicare and Medicaid, giving these hospitals about a 14 percent shortfall in operating revenue from public insurance. So, where do hospitals, that usually run on thin profit margins of less than seven percent, get the money to make up for the shortfall from public insurance funding? The answer is private health insurance. Hospitals and hospital associations negotiate with private health insurance for reimbursement for patient care. Because

they must make up for the shortfall from public insurance funding, hospitals negotiate vigorously for higher payments from the private insurers. This is called “cost shifting.” On average, private insurance payments are about 145 percent of hospital expenses. A Medicarefor-all plan that extends the current Medicare fee schedule to all patients would therefore lead to a sharp decline in revenue from formerly privately insured patients and a slight decline from formerly Medicaid covered patients (Medicaid pays hospitals slightly more than Medicare). The estimated decline in revenue for hospitals in this scenario is almost 16 percent, which amounts to $151 billion in lost revenue. Hospitals could then face the prospect of margins as negative as nine percent, or an annual loss of $85.6 billion unless they could rapidly reduce waste and become more efficient. Some hospitals that built up financial reserves over the last few dec-

ades could see those reserves rapidly vanish. Because the most flexible hospital cost is labor, estimates are that 1.5 million hospital jobs would be lost, or about 850,000 jobs if the hospital sacrificed its seven percent operating margin. Many hospitals would undoubtedly be forced to close. And because private health insurance would cease to exist, millions more of those jobs would be lost. Hopefully this doomsday scenario will never become a reality, but when politicians spout off about free stuff, someone needs to ask them who pays for it and what its consequences would be. The political pessimist in me says that they would not be able to logically answer either question. Dear Enchantress, I got an easy one for you. How do I approach a man? I usually get yelled back at, or I push my limits and give stupid compliments. I've always been this way, I think I'm more masculine then feminine, and I have fun, but I also think that people think I'm a lesbian, lesbians are cool and all, but I am interested in men. And the men I attract usually do not turn me on. I'm 35 and have not really been in a long-term relationship. What am I doing wrong? I'm not sure I want to have kids, but I definitely picture myself married and all. HELP! Dear Mary Making Yourself Wrong, Great question! I relate to this, when I was younger and in high school and the beginning of college, it was a thing to hang out with males and be rowdy and competitive, and do a fast-paced banter, then we would end up "hooking up" and I would get super awkward and often hurt and feeling rejected and get obsessed. SO, my first two pieces of advice are to: Slow down and ask yourself—"what do I like about myself?"

When you make yourself wrong, it's hard to a) have fun and b) have thoughts that are curious or playful. You don't have to change at all, you can still be yourself. Your sense of humor is one that is unique and there are men that will like and love you just as you are. If you are feeling REALLY brave, after you say one of your "stupid compliments" to a man, you can ask him any one of these questions or shares: What was it like to hear that compliment from me? Did you know that was a compliment? That was my awkward attempt to give you a compliment. How did that compliment land with you? You are basically asking for feedback, and pay CLOSE attention to the response you get. Take note of it, and also trust that your guy or your type of guy will find your way of being charming and enchanted! five" grabbed me right away as I was immediately curious as to what the robot's iconic spoken warning to young Will Robinson from the 1960's TV series Lost in Space had to do with the 6-foot plastic "Gumby" with large jiggly eyes pictured prominently at the top of the story on page 12. Reading on, I discovered that "Marty" is a mobile robotic assistant being used to roam the store and identify slip hazards, such as liquid, powder and bulk food spills, and report them via the public address system, ostensibly to free up associates who can now spend more time serving customers. I also found Katie's descriptions of various store customers' accounts of their individual interactions with "Marty" enlightening. Some were amused, some annoyed, and some found the 6-foottall Gumby looking can on wheels downright "creepy." Apparently, one conspiracy minded customer, apparently an avid fan of Abbie Hoffman's 1970 publication "Steal This Book," was completely leery of this whole robotic assistant thing and complained, "How do we truly know what its true purpose is, as no one bothered to introduce this gadget to the customers? For all I know, it's scanning me to see if I have stolen something or have a weapon." When I read that last customer's complaint, all I could think of was that Albert Einstein was right when he asserted that "You cannot be more artificially intelligent than naturally stupid." Of course, on the other hand, this dim bulb may have simply been annoyed that "Marty" has thrown a wrench into his/her plans to write his/ her own book, "Steal this Iceberg Lettuce." I was really surprised that more questions were not raised regarding this brave new supermarket world employee regarding Gumby's gender? In this day and age,

we cannot assume that it is male just because its name is Marty, can we? Personally I would feel very uncomfortable addressing "Marty" without first knowing what "Marty's" preferred pronoun is... he, she, it, cis, pan, bi, ze, hir, etc. After all, if it turns out that this mobile tin can is a product of male chauvinist genderphobic racism, I am sure none of us would lend neither our imprimatur nor business to an establishment guilty of exploiting an artificial intelligence! Of course, "Marty's" presence in the store also begs the question—will jobs be lost to this new type of automation? I don't think "Marty" is a clear and present danger to employee job security at the moment. It is really not doing much of anything besides getting in the way, paging the store nearly constantly, over the smallest things—like a stem from a bunch of grapes

or a youngster in damp camp clothing—and it will go around in circles until an employee comes to clean the “hazard” up. Today "Marty" is little more than a glorified Roomba and he/she/it doesn’t even vacuum. But what about tomorrow? I personally believe Katie's lead sentence "Danger Will Robinson, Danger!" will prove prescient and, as such, I leave you all with the old joke. "A robot walks into a bar, lays down some cash and orders a drink and is told by the bartender, 'Hey we don't serve robots!' to which the robot replies, 'Oh, but someday you will!'" Again, kudos to Katie McFadden for giving all of us who are banging on, many french fries short of a happy meal, a great deal to think about. Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Another Fab Fam Fun Run The 17th edition of the Graybeards Family Run once again provided one of the highlights of summer in Rockaway, producing a fabulous night with nearly 500 runners participating in at least one race. Spectators more than doubled race attendance, cheering the runners of all ages, and then convening in the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard at St. Francis de Sales, to celebrate with food and beverages, music from Gearth, Wind & Fireman, games and children’s rides, raffles and awards. The children’s races kicked things off at 6:30 p.m. with waves of runners pouring down Rockaway Beach Blvd to receive their ribbons after completing their trek. Rockaway’s Special Athletes followed, drawing a tremendous response from the crowd. The 1-mile set off at 7 a.m. and John Conroy defended his title as he prepares to set off to run for Iona College. Joe Butler, Sean Mulvihill, William Geron and Brendan Mulvihill completed the top 5. Catherine Dean was female champion followed by Kelsie Price, Noelle Polanco, Abigail Thompson and MaryAnn Polanco. This year’s 5k raced once again featured segments along the Boardwalk, Rockaway Beach Blvd., and Neponsit Avenue. Ron Joseph repeated as champion, winning in at 17:21. Demir Degirmenci also broke 18 minutes, followed by Patrick Goldberg, Joe Redmond, and Tom Patchett. Kathleen Woods is the champion on the female side, taking the plate in 20:42. Mary Edwards was second, Brigit Butler 3rd, Kerry Brady 4th and Devin Parchment 5th.

Pre-K rocks at World Champions Karate Center

On Tuesday, July 30, eight Pre-K students showed their karate abilities at the promotion at the World Champions Karate Center. They punched, blocked, and kicked their way to new yel-

In a hot, hot, hot gym at St. Camillus on Thursday, July 25, the championship games of the Graybeard division were played. The Legends, playing the early bird

game, treated a packed gym to a thriller with late lead changes and stellar play. John Cortese, Cliff Shevlin, Bobby Bruns, Craig Carey, John McCann, Jim Moriarty, and John Mullally (and another guy who will not be named because he did not get in the photo) survived the heat and are this year’s champs. The Young Guns game also went down to the wire with Dee Tubridy earning the game’s MVP. Photos, if any, were taken at The Wharf at the post-game celebration. Kudos to all for another great season.

Summer Classic Update And Coach Salute

The regular season is coming to a close and playoffs are approaching. Men's Open quarterfinals are tonight, Thursday, August 1. At 7:15 p.m., Mason Jar NYC plays defending champions Caiazzo Plumbing & Heating, and Bugalou Productions takes on JG Electric. Top seeded and undefeated Harbor Light begins at 8:30 p.m. against Jamesons, and Malbro Construction faces off with Mooney's Public House. Semi-finals are Thursday, August 8 with the championship on Thursday, August 15. Girls Grammar Senior playoffs begin with quarterfinals on Monday, August 5 and semifinals on Tuesday, August 6.
